  1. Well, I don't know about you guys, but I have a lot of firecrackers going off around my house, and not small ones, big ones.

  2. I was working in my backyard yesterday, and one exploded, and it caused my heart to beat a little faster.

  3. Well, Independence Day is upon us.

  4. We've got a parade afterwards.

  5. I'm looking forward to that.

  6. It's going to come right down 60th, take a left on Sheridan Road.

  7. I hope you can stay for that afterwards and enjoy that together.

  8. But as you know, Independence Day is a celebration of our country in which we celebrate our independence, the birth of our nation.

  9. And this year, if I did the math right, which is always under suspect, we've been 241 years as a nation.

  10. So if 1776 is the date of our first birthday, we're 241 years in.

  11. We are a nation that we distanced ourselves from a reign of a man named King George III, and that was a bloody mess.

  12. We became a nation at the shedding of blood.

  13. Blood separated us from Great Britain so that we could become our own nation.

  14. And so this morning, in anticipation of July 4th, let's celebrate our freedoms, especially as Christians.

  15. We have the freedom to gather.

  16. Did you know that today, in North Korea, Christians will gather in a latrine so they don't have to suffer for being a follower of Jesus?

  17. We don't fear that.

  18. So we celebrate that.

  19. But today, let's pledge our ultimate allegiance to the greatest of all kings,

  20. who is gathering for himself a whole new people by the blood that he has shed for us.

  21. His name is Jesus, and he is the Christ, the King, the long-anticipated one.

  22. And not only did he die, but he was raised, and he's reigning today, gathering a people for himself.

  23. As we've been working through the Gospel of Matthew, we can't help but ask the question,

  24. Who is this guy, Jesus?

  25. And this morning, we're going to approach Matthew 16, asking the question,

  26. Who is this guy?

  27. And Matthew 16 is going to show us through again and again that this is the Christ.

  28. And so last week, we looked at Peter's confession.

  29. This week, we're going to go all the way back to chapter 16, verse 1,

  30. And we're going to walk through four different little passages in anticipation for next week

  31. when we hear Jesus call us to follow him, to deny ourselves, to take up our crosses,

  32. and to follow him always and in everything.

  33. And so this morning, what I want to help you to see is,

  34. Who is this guy?

  35. He is the Christ.

  36. And what gives him the right to call us, to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow him,

  37. what gives him the right is who he is and what he has done.

  38. So this morning, let's look at these four different sections of Matthew 16,

  39. starting with a challenge to the Christ.

  40. Would you open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 16, verses 1 through 4?

    Matthew 16:1–4

  41. I'm going to read that.

  42. I'm going to come back, and we'll just kind of walk through it.

  43. So Matthew chapter 16, 1 through 4,

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  44. Remember, he's speaking to the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  45. An adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  46. So he left them and departed.

  47. Now, as we've been working our way through the Gospel of Matthew,

  48. you may have just noticed that a new group of people has been introduced, the Sadducees.

  49. And a way to remember who the Sadducees are is to remember it this way.

  50. They were sad, you see, because they didn't believe in a resurrection.

  51. The Pharisees did.

  52. So the Pharisees believed in a resurrection.

  53. The Sadducees, who were sad, you see, because they didn't believe in a resurrection,

  54. they were at theological odds.

  55. But not here.

  56. Did you notice?

  57. Jesus, the Pharisees and the Sadducees, came together to test Jesus.

  58. Jesus has this uncanny way of uniting people who are at odds with each other.

  59. They unite in against him, in opposition to him.

  60. We'll see that if you know the Gospel of Luke,

  61. Pilate and Herod become friends at the end of Jesus' life,

  62. because they met each other and got to know another, worked some things out.

  63. Jesus has a way of uniting people for him and against him.

  64. Well, these two groups of people, the Pharisees and Sadducees,

  65. who are normally opposed to each other,

  66. they unite to oppose Jesus.

  67. And they came to test him, to challenge him.

  68. They're asking Jesus to show them a sign from heaven.

  69. And basically what they're saying is, hey, show us proof,

  70. demonstrate that you're legit.

  71. And in verses 2 and 3, Jesus responds by appealing to the weather.

  72. He says, hey, you guys can read the signs in the sky.

  73. You know if it's going to rain.

  74. You know if it's going to be threatening.

  75. Red sky at night or red sky and threatening in the morning.

  76. You know all these things.

  77. But then he says, if you look at verse 4,

  78. no, excuse me, at the end of verse 3,

  79. but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

  80. Hey, you guys can read the weather just fine,

  81. but you cannot understand the signs of the times,

  82. namely that the age of the Messiah has come,

  83. that the kingdom of heaven has drawn near in me.

  84. You can't see it.

  85. Jesus goes on to say that their demand for a sign

  86. is just evidence that they're part of this evil

  87. and adulterous generation.

  88. They were asking for a sign,

  89. and even if Jesus did give them a sign,

  90. they would not have believed.

  91. They didn't believe.

  92. But Jesus doesn't leave them empty-handed.

  93. If you look at verse 4, he says,

  94. an evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign,

  95. but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  96. This is the second time Jesus has referenced the sign of Jonah.

  97. He talked about it earlier in Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  98. And if you remember Jonah, Jonah was a prophet on the run.

  99. He gets swallowed by a whale, is in the whale for three days,

  100. and he gets spit out by the whale, not in chunks.

  101. And he wasn't dead.

  102. He was alive.

  103. He was in the belly of a whale for three days,

  104. and he came out alive.

  105. And so what Jesus is talking about in Matthew 12,

  106. and here is, do you know what the sign of Jonah is?

  107. That Jesus won't, it's not a belly of a whale,

  108. the belly, the heart of the earth for three days,

  109. and he spends three days in the earth in a tomb,

  110. and he comes out alive.

  111. The sign of Jonah is pointing to the resurrection of Jesus.

  112. And so what Jesus is saying, these Pharisees and Sadducees,

  113. is that, hey, you want a sign?

  114. I'll give you a sign.

  115. It's the sign of Jonah,

  116. and we know that he's talking about his resurrection.

  117. They don't know.

  118. It's veiled to them.

  119. But what he veils here is going to be unveiled in verse 21.

  120. We'll wait on that.

  121. Now let me ask you a question.

  122. Have you ever asked this question,

  123. or has someone come up to you asking a question like this?

  124. You know what?

  125. I would believe in Jesus if only God would give me a sign that it's true.

  126. Someone comes up, you know what?

  127. I have a hard time with this Christianity thing,

  128. but if God gave me a sign, I would believe it.

  129. Do you know how you answer that question?

  130. God has given you a sign.

  131. It's the sign of Jonah.

  132. It's the resurrection of Jesus.

  133. It either happened or it didn't.

  134. One of the central claims of Christianity is that

  135. Jesus is the Christ who was crucified on a Roman cross,

  136. and three days later he was raised bodily from the dead,

  137. and that he's reigning right now and will one day come back.

  138. Now if the resurrection of Jesus didn't happen,

  139. Christianity is a waste of your time.

  140. But if the resurrection of Jesus did happen,

  141. that points that Jesus is who we claim to be,

  142. the Christ, the Son of the living God,

  143. fully God, fully man, one mediator between God and man,

  144. and that the death he died on the cross isn't just a historical event.

  145. It actually accomplished something.

  146. It accomplished a salvation, the salvation for sinners.

  147. So did you come in looking for a sign this morning to believe?

  148. A sign has been given.

  149. All people.

  150. Jesus died on a cross, and he was raised from the dead.

  151. Who is this guy that responds to a challenge like that?

  152. He's the Christ.

  153. Let's look at the next section.

  154. Jesus, the Christ, cautions his disciples.

  155. Look at verses 5 through 12.

  156. When the disciples reached the other side,

  157. they had forgotten to bring any bread.

  158. Oh, no.

  159. Jesus said to them,

  160. Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  161. And they began discussing it among themselves,

  162. saying, We brought no bread.

  163. But Jesus, aware of this, said,

  164. Oh, you of little faith,

  165. why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?

  166. Do you not yet perceive?

  167. Do you not remember the five loaves for the 5,000

  168. and how many baskets you gathered?

  169. Or the seven loaves for the 4,000

  170. and how many baskets you gathered?

  171. How is it that you fail to understand

  172. that I do not speak about bread?

  173. Beware of the leaven

  174. of these Pharisees and Sadducees.

  175. Then they understood that he did not tell them

  176. to beware of the leaven of bread,

  177. but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  178. So here's what's going on.

  179. After being tested in Magadan,

  180. Jesus gets into a boat with the disciples

  181. and they start to cross the Sea of Galilee again.

  182. They're going to be heading north.

  183. They're going to end up in Caesarea Philippi.

  184. But when they reach the other side,

  185. the disciples realize,

  186. Oh, we do not have any bread.

  187. There wasn't a panera there.

  188. What are they going to do?

  189. Jesus takes the opportunity

  190. to kind of pull on the bread theme

  191. and he says,

  192. Watch and beware of the leaven

  193. of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  194. Leaven was used to bake bread.

  195. The disciples take what Jesus says very literally.

  196. We brought no bread.

  197. Apparently the disciples thought

  198. that Jesus was referring to some kind of bread

  199. that they had gotten

  200. from the Pharisee and Sadducee bakery

  201. that they had forgotten.

  202. In verse 8, Jesus says,

  203. Oh, you little faith,

  204. why are you discussing among yourselves

  205. that you have no bread?

  206. And he goes on in verses 9 and 10

  207. to ask some rhetorical questions

  208. and they are to make a point.

  209. And it's basically saying this,

  210. If we were talking about bread guys

  211. and you guys forgot bread,

  212. do you guys not remember

  213. that I fed 5,000, fed 4,000 just guys?

  214. I mean, if you add it all up together,

  215. we're talking about 20,000 people

  216. that I multiplied bread for.

  217. If we were lacking bread guys,

  218. I could make it happen.

  219. But we're not talking about bread.

  220. He says,

  221. Beware of the leaven

  222. of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  223. And in verse 12,

  224. the lights go on for the disciples

  225. and they realize that the leaven

  226. is a reference to teaching.

  227. Jesus is warning them,

  228. cautioning them

  229. about the teaching

  230. of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

  231. And that makes us ask the question,

  232. Well, what was so wrong

  233. with the teaching

  234. of the Pharisees and Sadducees?

  235. Well, if you were to flip your Bible

  236. forward to Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  237. you would see Jesus pronouncing

  238. woes upon the Pharisee.

  239. Woe is you.

  240. He decries the Pharisees

  241. for shutting the kingdom of heaven

  242. in people's faces,

  243. for misleading the people,

  244. for neglecting the weightier matters

  245. of the law,

  246. for ignoring the sinful desires

  247. of the heart,

  248. for emphasizing outward appearance,

  249. self-righteousness,

  250. for saying the very opposite

  251. of what they were doing.

  252. They were being hypocrites.

  253. They were tying heavy burdens

  254. and laying them on people's shoulders

  255. without lifting a finger to help.

  256. And it's all communicated

  257. through their teaching and lives.

  258. They were teaching a religious system

  259. that cultivated self-righteousness.

  260. It cultivated a reliance on yourself

  261. to make you acceptable in God's sight.

  262. And not only did it just blow

  263. people's brains up with pride,

  264. it also isolated

  265. and was hurtful

  266. to those who were harassed

  267. and helpless on the fringes

  268. of the culture.

  269. But most of all,

  270. their teaching

  271. rejected Jesus.

  272. They denied that Jesus

  273. was the Christ.

  274. And if you can recall,

  275. they would even attribute

  276. his miracles

  277. to Satan.

  278. So it's with good reason

  279. that Jesus warns

  280. his disciples

  281. against the misleading teachings

  282. of the Pharisees

  283. and of the Sadducees.

  284. their teaching

  285. is shutting the kingdom of heaven

  286. in people's faces.

  287. It was a false hope.

  288. It was a false gospel.

  289. The good news

  290. they were proclaiming

  291. wasn't centered on Jesus.

  292. So they were promoting

  293. what's called

  294. a gospel of works.

  295. That you earn

  296. your salvation.

  297. So Jesus here

  298. warns his disciples

  299. against a false teaching

  300. of the Pharisees

  301. and Sadducees.

  302. And I just want to take

  303. a moment

  304. to caution you

  305. about a different kind

  306. of leaven

  307. that is in our culture.

  308. A different kind

  309. of teaching

  310. that you do not

  311. want to consume.

  312. It's called

  313. the prosperity gospel.

  314. It also goes

  315. by the name

  316. health and wealth gospel.

  317. It also goes

  318. by name it

  319. and claim it.

  320. And what

  321. this teaching

  322. promotes

  323. is that

  324. it's God's

  325. will for believers

  326. to be physically

  327. healthy,

  328. materially wealthy,

  329. and personally happy

  330. this side

  331. of heaven.

  332. And you

  333. must be

  334. healthy,

  335. wealthy,

  336. and happy.

  337. this teaching

  338. kind of

  339. moves along

  340. the lines of

  341. encouraging believers

  342. to demand

  343. God

  344. to bless

  345. them.

  346. This teaching

  347. teaches that

  348. you give

  349. in order

  350. to get

  351. a return.

  352. they teach

  353. that

  354. Jesus'

  355. death

  356. on the cross,

  357. his atonement,

  358. was done

  359. in order

  360. that you

  361. could be

  362. healthy,

  363. wealthy,

  364. and happy

  365. today.

  366. It's

  367. your right.

  368. It's

  369. part of

  370. what Jesus

  371. did for you

  372. now.

  373. And here's

  374. what the,

  375. what this

  376. does.

  377. this teaching

  378. makes Jesus'

  379. death and

  380. resurrection,

  381. it becomes

  382. a motivation

  383. and a

  384. justifying

  385. of greed

  386. and self-occupation

  387. in the church.

  388. And it's

  389. the complete

  390. opposite of

  391. what the gospel

  392. is meant to do.

  393. It's to

  394. free us

  395. from greed

  396. and make us

  397. generous.

  398. It is to

  399. liberate us

  400. from the

  401. worship of

  402. ourselves

  403. so that we

  404. can worship

  405. the one

  406. true living

  407. God.

  408. The prosperity

  409. gospel will

  410. say things

  411. like this,

  412. what has

  413. God done

  414. for me

  415. lately?

  416. It

  417. essentially

  418. makes God

  419. into a

  420. divine sugar

  421. daddy.

  422. it contradicts

  423. and undermines

  424. the gospel

  425. of grace.

  426. We have,

  427. G1 and

  428. Caitlin Rye

  429. have come

  430. from Nepal

  431. and they've

  432. been staying

  433. with us

  434. for some

  435. time and

  436. it's been

  437. really sweet

  438. to get to

  439. know them.

  440. And some

  441. of our

  442. conversations

  443. have gone

  444. along the

  445. lines of

  446. Christianity

  447. and of the

  448. church in

  449. Nepal and the

  450. influence of

  451. American

  452. Christianity on

  453. the church

  454. of Nepal.

  455. And one of

  456. the things

  457. that American

  458. Christianity is

  459. exporting very

  460. well to a

  461. place like

  462. Nepal is the

  463. prosperity gospel.

  464. We have

  465. teachers flying

  466. in on private

  467. jets into

  468. Kathmandu who

  469. then teach the

  470. prosperity gospel,

  471. collect a big

  472. sum of money,

  473. and then they're

  474. out two days

  475. later.

  476. The prosperity

  477. gospel comes in

  478. on the internet

  479. and on TVs and

  480. it becomes what

  481. Christians there

  482. see and think to

  483. be normal

  484. Christianity.

  485. It's 11 that

  486. hurts.

  487. It's a false

  488. teaching that

  489. gives a false

  490. hope.

  491. It's confusing,

  492. it's not true,

  493. it's distracting,

  494. it's unhealthy,

  495. it undermines the

  496. church in its

  497. witness.

  498. I want to

  499. encourage you to

  500. pursue something.

  501. There is a

  502. website, it's

  503. called the

  504. gospelcoalition.org

  505. and it is a

  506. treasure trove of

  507. information.

  508. If you have

  509. questions about the

  510. prosperity gospel,

  511. this leaven that

  512. you need to be

  513. aware of, go, go

  514. to the

  515. gospelcoalition.org,

  516. type in prosperity

  517. gospel into the

  518. search bar and

  519. you will find some

  520. very helpful

  521. resources, not only

  522. to help you

  523. understand it, but

  524. to help recognize

  525. it.

  526. We live in a

  527. culture in which

  528. the prosperity

  529. gospel has great

  530. influence and we

  531. must be aware of

  532. it and we must

  533. steer clear of it

  534. and we must tell

  535. our friends and

  536. family, don't

  537. consume that, you

  538. spit it out because

  539. it's not good for

  540. you.

  541. Who is this

  542. guy?

  543. Who is this

  544. guy, Jesus, who

  545. tells his

  546. disciples, beware

  547. of the leaven of

  548. the Pharisees?

  549. He's the Christ and

  550. he's very concerned

  551. about what his

  552. people take in as

  553. what is true.

  554. Teaching matters.

  555. What you believe

  556. matters.

  557. Moving on, we

  558. move from this

  559. caution by the

  560. Christ to Peter's

  561. confession of the

  562. Christ and we

  563. looked at that this

  564. last week so I'm

  565. just going to be very

  566. brief here.

  567. In verses 13

  568. through 20, Jesus

  569. and his disciples

  570. are in Caesarea

  571. Philippi.

  572. It's a city named

  573. after Caesar and

  574. Jesus in verse 14

  575. asks his disciples

  576. who do people say

  577. that the Son of Man

  578. is and his

  579. disciples respond

  580. by saying something

  581. to think Santa.

  582. Well, they think

  583. that you're a

  584. prophet of some

  585. sort.

  586. And then in

  587. verse 15, Jesus

  588. asks, but who do

  589. you say that I am?

  590. And in verse 16,

  591. Simon Peter says,

  592. you are the

  593. Christ, the

  594. Son of the

  595. Living God.

  596. And what Peter is

  597. saying there is,

  598. you are the

  599. long-awaited

  600. Messiah.

  601. Messiah.

  602. You are the

  603. King, the

  604. one who would

  605. sit on David's

  606. throne, who would

  607. establish a new

  608. kingdom that will

  609. reign forever.

  610. You're that

  611. anointed one.

  612. Jesus goes on to

  613. pronounce blessing.

  614. Blessed are you,

  615. Simon Barjona.

  616. Why?

  617. For flesh and blood

  618. has not revealed this

  619. to you, but my

  620. Father who is in

  621. heaven.

  622. And he can't miss

  623. the irony here

  624. because those

  625. heart-of-heart

  626. Pharisees and

  627. Sadducees, when

  628. they ask for a

  629. sign, they are

  630. given no sign.

  631. Jesus is like, no

  632. sign for you, except

  633. the sign of Jonah.

  634. But here, Peter is

  635. given a revelation

  636. from heaven, from

  637. my Father who is in

  638. heaven, that leaves

  639. no question to the

  640. true identity of

  641. Jesus.

  642. Why would God

  643. reveal Jesus the

  644. Christ to Peter and

  645. his disciples, but

  646. not to the Pharisees

  647. and Sadducees?

  648. Would you flip back

  649. to Matthew chapter

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  650. 11?

  651. Verses 25 and 26,

  652. Jesus is speaking to

  653. his Father.

  654. He says, I thank

  655. you, Father, Lord of

  656. heaven and earth, that

  657. you've hidden these

  658. things from the wise

  659. and understanding and

  660. revealed them to

  661. little children, those

  662. of humble heart.

  663. And then in verse

  664. 26, yes, Father, for

  665. such was your gracious

  666. will.

  667. Why would he reveal the

  668. Christ to Peter and

  669. his disciples?

  670. It was according to his

  671. gracious will.

  672. But Jesus doesn't stop

  673. here.

  674. He goes on to remind

  675. Simon of the name he

  676. gave them when they

  677. first met, Peter,

  678. Petros.

  679. And that on this

  680. Petra, this rock, Jesus

  681. is going to build his

  682. church.

  683. And Jesus is going to

  684. entrust him with some

  685. keys.

  686. Keys of the kingdom.

  687. And what Jesus is

  688. referring to is the

  689. truth of the gospel.

  690. The truth of who he is

  691. and the truth of what he

  692. would do.

  693. And so when the gospel

  694. is proclaimed, it will

  695. either be humbly

  696. received or it will be

  697. pridefully rejected.

  698. What that means is this.

  699. Those who humbly embrace

  700. Jesus as the Messiah,

  701. the gospel keys open up

  702. the kingdom to them.

  703. But to those who

  704. pridefully reject Jesus

  705. as the Messiah, the gospel

  706. keys shut them out of the

  707. kingdom.

  708. What I particularly love

  709. about what Jesus is

  710. saying here is found

  711. in this promise.

  712. I will build my church

  713. and the gates of hell

  714. shall not prevail against

  715. it.

  716. This is a promise that

  717. Jesus is making.

  718. You know what he's

  719. saying?

  720. Even death cannot

  721. overcome my church,

  722. my people that I've

  723. purchased with my blood.

  724. He's saying that the

  725. church will never end.

  726. Now if you think about

  727. the founders of our

  728. nation, George Washington,

  729. Thomas Jefferson, John

  730. Adams, guys like that.

  731. Can you think of anywhere

  732. where they would say

  733. something to the extent

  734. of, I promise to the

  735. American people and I

  736. ensure with my power that

  737. America, the United States

  738. of America will go on

  739. forever and ever and ever

  740. and the gates of hell will

  741. not overcome that nation.

  742. Nowhere.

  743. Our founding fathers are

  744. unable to make that kind

  745. of promise.

  746. But the founder of our

  747. faith, Jesus Christ, not

  748. only made that promise, he

  749. is able to ensure that

  750. promise because he's the

  751. Christ.

  752. He died and was raised.

  753. Our resilience as a church

  754. is linked to his resilience

  755. as a risen king.

  756. It's an amazing promise.

  757. And so he's building his

  758. church today.

  759. He's building his church

  760. here in Kenosha, in

  761. Kathmandu, Nepal,

  762. Guadalajara, Mexico,

  763. Pyongyang, North Korea,

  764. Moscow, Russia,

  765. Tehran, Iran, and even in

  766. Washington, D.C.

  767. He's building his church.

  768. And he will continue to

  769. build it until he returns.

  770. Who is this guy?

  771. He's the Christ, the son of

  772. the living God.

  773. And he makes promises that

  774. no one else can make.

  775. And he keeps them.

  776. Now, would you look at

  777. verses 21 through 23?

  778. Because the Christ makes a

  779. very important clarification

  780. at this point.

  781. From that time, Jesus began

  782. to show his disciples that

  783. he must go to Jerusalem and

  784. suffer many things from the

  785. elders and chief priests and

  786. scribes and be killed, and on

  787. the third day be raised.

  788. And Peter took him aside and

  789. began to rebuke him, saying,

  790. Far be it from you, Lord.

  791. This shall never happen to you.

  792. But he, Jesus, turned and said

  793. to Peter, Get behind me,

  794. Satan.

  795. You are a hindrance to me, for

  796. you are not setting your mind on

  797. the things of God, but on the

  798. things of man.

  799. We just looked at a passage

  800. where Peter confesses that

  801. Jesus is the Christ, and it's a

  802. revelation from the Father.

  803. And now, Peter gets rebuked for

  804. representing satanic activity.

  805. We are left saying, the disciples, at

  806. the end of verse 20, they buy in.

  807. They believe he's the Christ.

  808. They're on board.

  809. His true identity's been revealed.

  810. They've got his identity right.

  811. They know who he is.

  812. But they've got a major

  813. misunderstanding.

  814. And the major misunderstanding is

  815. how he's going to establish

  816. his kingdom.

  817. And Jesus knows this about his

  818. disciples.

  819. He knows that they think that,

  820. that they think the Messiah will

  821. come in power and glory to set up

  822. his kingdom.

  823. And it's true.

  824. When Jesus comes back a second time,

  825. he's going to come in power and glory

  826. and to establish his kingdom

  827. forever.

  828. forever.

  829. But what Jesus is doing here is

  830. preparing his disciples to understand

  831. the work the Messiah has right now.

  832. He's going to have to go to Jerusalem,

  833. and he's going to have to suffer,

  834. and he's going to have to die,

  835. and he's going to have to be raised

  836. from the dead.

  837. Now, this would have been a foreign

  838. concept to Peter and his guys.

  839. This is the first reference Jesus makes

  840. to his coming death and resurrection.

  841. There's three others to come.

  842. And it's all in preparing his disciples

  843. for why he is going to,

  844. what's going to happen in Jerusalem.

  845. What I want you to notice in verse 21

  846. is that word must.

  847. From that time,

  848. Jesus began to show his disciples

  849. that he must go to Jerusalem,

  850. suffer, be killed,

  851. and on the third day, be raised.

  852. Think about it as a divine must.

  853. It's got to happen.

  854. Jesus must go to Jerusalem

  855. because it's part of his father's plan

  856. to rescue a people from every nation

  857. and tribe around the world.

  858. It's got to happen.

  859. This plan of God for the Messiah

  860. to go to Jerusalem,

  861. to suffer, to be crucified,

  862. that's not plan B.

  863. That's the only plan.

  864. It's not like when Adam and Eve fell,

  865. God said, oh no,

  866. we got to go to plan B.

  867. Before the foundation of the world,

  868. God the Father had set in place

  869. a plan to save a people

  870. through the death of the Messiah.

  871. There's only one way for Jesus

  872. to fulfill the God,

  873. the Father's plan.

  874. It's to go and suffer

  875. and be crucified.

  876. So Jesus is to go to Jerusalem.

  877. Could you imagine if you're the disciples

  878. hearing that for the first time?

  879. Okay guys,

  880. you guys are right,

  881. I'm the Messiah.

  882. I got to go to Jerusalem now.

  883. They might be thinking,

  884. oh yeah, let's go buddy.

  885. Let's go.

  886. Messiah,

  887. take over David's throne.

  888. Let's rock this place.

  889. Let's rock this place.

  890. And then he starts to say things like this.

  891. I got to go to Jerusalem

  892. and suffer many things

  893. from the elders,

  894. chief priests,

  895. and scribes.

  896. The elders and chief priests,

  897. and scribes,

  898. it was a body of leaders

  899. called the Sanhedrin

  900. in Jerusalem

  901. that would make decisions

  902. for the Jewish people

  903. at the time.

  904. So they hear that,

  905. and maybe they're thinking like this,

  906. okay, okay,

  907. the Christ goes to Jerusalem

  908. to take David's throne.

  909. There's probably going to be

  910. some fighting

  911. and some suffering going on there.

  912. Okay, I got it,

  913. I got it.

  914. We can deal with that.

  915. And then when Jesus starts telling them

  916. that he's going to be killed,

  917. Jesus,

  918. wait a second here,

  919. because I thought

  920. that you're going to establish

  921. your kingdom

  922. on Peter,

  923. the rock,

  924. and death is not going

  925. to prevail against it.

  926. What are you talking about?

  927. You're going to die now.

  928. In chapter 20,

  929. verse 19,

  930. Jesus reveals then

  931. the kind of death

  932. he's going to die.

  933. It's by crucifixion.

  934. And if you're familiar

  935. with the way

  936. the Jewish mind

  937. thought about crucifixion,

  938. to be killed on a tree

  939. was cursing.

  940. It was scandalous.

  941. So not only is the Messiah

  942. going to die,

  943. he's going to die

  944. in a really ugly,

  945. gross,

  946. disgusting kind of way.

  947. And not just that,

  948. three days later

  949. he's going to be raised

  950. from the dead.

  951. Now I'm guessing

  952. at this point

  953. the disciples

  954. when they're hearing

  955. Jesus talk about that,

  956. they're kind of stuck

  957. on the Messiah dying.

  958. So like,

  959. what,

  960. raised from the dead

  961. three days later?

  962. I'm still stuck on you

  963. dying,

  964. Jesus the Christ.

  965. But after the resurrection

  966. when the disciples

  967. would recall these words,

  968. they will reknow

  969. that these were prophetic.

  970. The Messiah had to die.

  971. He must go to Jerusalem.

  972. He must suffer.

  973. He must be crucified.

  974. He must be raised again

  975. because God's plan

  976. of salvation

  977. required it.

  978. Jesus was obeying

  979. his father.

  980. He's adjusting

  981. his disciples' thinking.

  982. God's great plan

  983. for the ages,

  984. the salvation

  985. for the nations

  986. would focus

  987. on the Jewish Messiah

  988. who would be crucified

  989. and raised.

  990. in verse 22,

  991. look at Peter's reaction.

  992. And Peter took him aside

  993. and began to rebuke him.

  994. It's not like Peter

  995. is saying,

  996. please,

  997. would you mind

  998. clarifying for this,

  999. Jesus?

  1000. I think I misunderstood you.

  1001. What he does is

  1002. he takes him aside

  1003. so it's just

  1004. Peter and Jesus

  1005. and Peter's saying,

  1006. oh Lord,

  1007. may it never be.

1008. This is never going to happen.

  1009. Nope,

  1010. not going to happen.

  1011. In Greek,

  1012. it's a double negative.

  1013. It goes,

  1014. never,

  1015. no,

  1016. ever,

  1017. never.

  1018. Emphatic.

1019. This isn't going to happen,

  1020. buddy.

1021. And what Peter's doing there,

  1022. he's elevating himself

  1023. above the Christ.

  1024. He's saying,

  1025. hey,

1026. I got this thing right.

  1027. You got it wrong.

  1028. Sorry,

  1029. Jesus,

1030. this isn't going to happen.

  1031. Messiah,

  1032. you're mistaken.

  1033. In verse 23,

  1034. look how Jesus responds.

  1035. Jesus turns.

1036. It's just Jesus and Peter

1037. and Jesus turns to Peter

  1038. and says,

  1039. get behind me,

  1040. Satan.

  1041. Why would Jesus

1042. use that kind of language

  1043. with Peter

  1044. who has just confessed

  1045. that he's the Christ?

  1046. Why so harsh?

1047. Do you remember Satan's tactic

1048. back in Matthew chapter 4

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  1049. when he tempted Jesus?

  1050. Satan offered Jesus

1051. the kingdoms of the nations.

1052. If only he would just bow

  1053. and worship him,

  1054. Satan.

1055. And what Satan was offering

  1056. Jesus at that moment

  1057. was you can have

1058. all the kingdoms of the world

  1059. without having to suffer,

1060. without having to be crucified,

  1061. just bow before me,

  1062. skip all the suffering,

  1063. Jesus,

  1064. and you can have

  1065. all the nations.

  1066. Peter has no idea

  1067. what he's doing,

  1068. what he's saying.

  1069. He's got the things

1070. of man on his mind,

1071. not the things of God.

  1072. Jesus knows exactly

  1073. what's going on here.

1074. And so what Jesus says

1075. is get behind me, Satan.

  1076. Do you know what's

  1077. at stake here?

  1078. The salvation of mankind.

1079. If Jesus took Peter's advice,

1080. we would still be in our sins.

1081. The Messiah had to suffer

  1082. and die.

1083. He goes on to say

1084. you are a hindrance to me.

  1085. It's that word skandalon

  1086. in Greek.

  1087. It's the trigger of a trap.

  1088. It's the bait

  1089. that when taken

  1090. snaps a trap shut.

1091. And so Jesus is saying,

  1092. Peter, get behind me.

1093. You are, Satan, get behind me.

  1094. You are tempting me

  1095. into a trap

  1096. that will undermine

  1097. God's plan of salvation

  1098. for all the sinners

  1099. of the world.

1100. You are not setting your mind

1101. on the things of God,

1102. but on the things of man.

  1103. You don't have

  1104. a heavenly perspective.

  1105. You don't know

1106. what's going on here, Peter.

  1107. I do.

  1108. I'm the Messiah.

  1109. I'm your master.

  1110. Get behind me.

  1111. Follow me.

  1112. Let me do

1113. what I have come to do,

1114. and that is to die,

  1115. to go to Jerusalem,

  1116. to suffer,

  1117. to die,

  1118. and to be raised.

  1119. What a rebuke.

  1120. Jesus is saying,

  1121. you're not going to

  1122. distract me

1123. from what I must do

1124. for the glory of God

1125. and the good of all people.

1126. We do this still today.

  1127. We set our minds

1128. on the things of man.

  1129. Instead of embracing

  1130. what God deems

  1131. most important,

  1132. His glory,

  1133. made known

  1134. through the gospel

  1135. to all sinners

  1136. in all nations,

  1137. we have a tendency

  1138. to embrace

  1139. what the world

  1140. deems most important.

  1141. When Jesus says,

  1142. you're not setting

  1143. your mind

1144. on the things of God,

  1145. what Jesus is saying

  1146. is you don't have

  1147. God's agenda

  1148. first and foremost

  1149. in your mind

  1150. and heart.

  1151. God's agenda,

  1152. His plan,

  1153. His purposes,

  1154. His priorities

  1155. are all revealed

  1156. in this

  1157. all-authoritative book.

  1158. He's made

  1159. His will known.

1160. And all of these words

  1161. point somehow,

  1162. some way

  1163. to Jesus,

  1164. the Christ,

  1165. through whom God

  1166. offers salvation

  1167. to all people.

  1168. man's agenda,

  1169. purpose,

  1170. plan,

  1171. and priorities

  1172. tend to originate

  1173. in man

  1174. or Satan

  1175. and they usually

  1176. are denying

  1177. of God

  1178. or ignoring

  1179. of God.

  1180. They tend

  1181. to be God-less

  1182. and what we need

  1183. to be aware of

  1184. is that we will

  1185. inadvertently

  1186. adopt

  1187. the culture

  1188. mindset

  1189. around us

  1190. and think

  1191. the way

  1192. that the world

  1193. thinks.

  1194. It's that classic

  1195. frog in the kettle

  1196. illustration.

  1197. The danger is

  1198. oftentimes

  1199. we pull in

  1200. man thinking,

  1201. we absorb it.

  1202. It's not a conscious

  1203. decisions we make.

  1204. That's why

  1205. it's so dangerous.

  1206. we will set

  1207. our minds

  1208. on the things

  1209. of man

  1210. instead of the

  1211. things of God

  1212. without even

  1213. realizing it.

  1214. So you know

  1215. what that means

  1216. for us?

  1217. We've got to be

  1218. crystal clear

  1219. on God's

  1220. agenda.

  1221. His glory

  1222. revealed

  1223. in the salvation

  1224. for sinners

  1225. in Christ alone.

  1226. That's his agenda.

  1227. that's his agenda

  1228. among the nations.

  1229. Now,

  1230. in order

  1231. for us

  1232. to be on

  1233. God's agenda,

  1234. let your eyes

  1235. fall on

  1236. verse 24.

  1237. If anyone

  1238. would come

  1239. after me,

  1240. if anyone

  1241. would live

  1242. for what I

  1243. live for,

  1244. if anyone

  1245. would want

  1246. to be

  1247. following

  1248. after me

  1249. in pursuit

  1250. of God's

  1251. glory,

  1252. if anyone

  1253. would come

  1254. after me,

  1255. let him

  1256. deny himself,

  1257. take up

  1258. his cross,

  1259. and follow

  1260. me.

  1261. In order

  1262. to live

  1263. for God

  1264. in his glory,

  1265. we have

  1266. got to

  1267. die to

  1268. ourselves

  1269. and follow

  1270. Jesus.

  1271. God's

  1272. to live

  1273. to live

  1274. in the

  1275. world.

  1276. This

  1277. morning,

  1278. we've

  1279. looked at

  1280. the challenge

  1281. to the

  1282. Christ,

  1283. and he

  1284. gave the

  1285. sign of

  1286. Jonah.

  1287. We

  1288. looked at

  1289. his caution

  1290. to the

  1291. leaven

  1292. of the

  1293. Pharisees,

  1294. got to

  1295. watch out

  1296. for the

  1297. prosperity

  1298. gospel.

  1299. The

  1300. Christ

  1301. was confessed

  1302. by Peter.

  1303. He's

  1304. going to

  1305. build his

  1306. church,

  1307. and Jesus

  1308. clarifies

  1309. that he,

  1310. the Christ,

  1311. didn't come

  1312. to set up

  1313. a kingdom

  1314. by political

  1315. power or

  1316. military might,

  1317. but by

  1318. suffering,

  1319. crucifixion,

  1320. and resurrection.

  1321. Next week,

  1322. we're going to

  1323. look at the

  1324. costly call.

  1325. Let's pray.

  1326. God in

  1327. heaven,

  1328. great

  1329. triune

  1330. God,

  1331. you are

  1332. glorious in

  1333. all that

  1334. you are,

  1335. and your

  1336. plan of

  1337. salvation

  1338. that focuses

  1339. on Jesus,

  1340. it is

  1341. absolutely

  1342. worth dying

  1343. for.

  1344. God,

  1345. I do pray

  1346. that you

  1347. would help

  1348. us,

  1349. your people,

  1350. understand

  1351. and live

  1352. for the

  1353. things of

  1354. God,

  1355. not the

  1356. things of

  1357. man.

  1358. God,

  1359. I do pray

  1360. on this

  1361. Independence

  1362. Day weekend

  1363. that we

  1364. would rejoice

  1365. in being

  1366. citizens of

  1367. this country,

  1368. but we

  1369. would rejoice

  1370. more

  1371. in being

  1372. citizens of

  1373. heaven

  1374. with a

  1375. risen king

  1376. who's going

  1377. to come

  1378. back

  1379. and we

  1380. will see

  1381. face to

  1382. face.

  1383. It's in his

  1384. name we

  1385. pray,

  1386. Amen.

  1387. Amen.

  1388. Amen.

  1389. Amen.
