  1. And if everyone else would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 17,

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  2. we're going to finish up this passage, this section,

  3. and closing up in Matthew 17 today.

  4. We're going to be looking at verses 14 through 27.

  5. And for the last several weeks, chapters 14 through 17,

  6. I've been asked the question, who is this guy?

  7. And time and time again, it's this is the Christ,

  8. the son of the living God. There's nobody like him.

  9. And what does he do? He calls us to deny ourselves,

  10. take up our cross, and follow him.

  11. And to do that, you've got to believe him.

  12. You've got to trust him. You've got to have faith in him.

  13. We learn from Hebrews 11 that faith is being assured of things hoped for

  14. and having conviction of what is unseen.

  15. To trust.

  16. And so, to be a follower of Jesus is to trust in something you can't see right now.

  17. Someone you can't see right now.

  18. And this morning, we're going to look at three distinct little passages

  19. that are aimed to strengthen your faith in the Christ,

  20. the son of the living God.

  21. And so, we're going to look at a passage that Jesus exposes what he calls little faith,

  22. not to be mistaken for mustard-sized faith that can move mountains.

  23. And then Jesus is going to focus on himself,

  24. the son of man, and what he has done on the cross.

  25. And then Jesus, in an extraordinary little story,

  26. he's going to encourage your faith this morning.

  27. It's a story about a shekel in the mouth of a fish.

  28. The call to follow Jesus starts with a call to trust Jesus.

  29. And this morning, we're going to look at just that.

  30. So, would you open up your Bibles, if you haven't already, to Matthew chapter 17.

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  31. I'm going to read verses 14 through 20.

  32. And I'm going to kind of walk through that passage

  33. and kind of bring it to bear on our lives today.

  34. And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him, Jesus, came up to Jesus,

  35. and kneeling before Jesus said,

  36. Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic, and he suffers terribly.

  37. For often he falls into the fire and often into the water.

  38. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.

  39. And Jesus answered,

  40. Oh, faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you?

  41. How long am I to bear with you?

  42. Bring him here to me.

  43. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him,

  44. and the boy was healed instantly.

  45. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said,

  46. Why could we not cast it out?

  47. He said to them,

  48. Because of your little faith.

  49. For truly, I say to you, if you had faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  50. you would say to this mountain,

  51. Move from here to there, and it will move.

  52. And nothing will be impossible for you.

  53. Who likes summer cookouts?

  54. Raise your hand.

  55. Oh yeah, I do.

  56. And I'm a bit of a cookout connoisseur, informally, of course.

  57. A good cookout has, when it comes to food, has at least three things.

  58. It's got an appetizer, it's got the main dish, and then it's got dessert.

  59. And for me, a good appetizer is just kind of like potato chips.

  60. What it does is, it just really kind of stimulates your taste buds.

  61. In this passage that we're looking at, it's kind of part of a three-part meal,

  62. in which Jesus is going to build our faith,

  63. but first, he's going to start with stimulating your faith buds.

  64. And in order to do that, he's going to expose something in us.

  65. So in verse 14, Jesus and his three disciples come down off the mountain,

  66. which Jesus was transfigured.

  67. They've just beheld him in his glory.

  68. And as they're coming down the mountain, they walk into a crowd.

  69. Do you see that in verse 14?

  70. They came to the crowd, and a man came up to him,

  71. and kneeling before him said, this man is a dad.

  72. And he's a dad of a boy, a child.

  73. And this man comes out of the crowd and meets Jesus before Jesus,

  74. and his disciples get to the crowd.

  75. His three disciples get to the crowd.

  76. And he says, Lord, have mercy on my son,

  77. for he's an epileptic, and he suffers terribly.

  78. And so this dad comes to Jesus with a plea.

  79. And he says, have mercy.

  80. It's not a question mark.

  81. It's a desperate plea.

  82. He's saying, help us.

  83. Help me.

  84. And then he gives the reason.

  85. For his son is an epileptic, and he suffers terribly.

  86. And so whatever this condition was, we see it kind of elaborated,

  87. this terrible suffering.

  88. We see it elaborated, for often he falls into the fire,

  89. and often into the water.

  90. So whatever this condition is, this boy is falling into the fire,

  91. often probably a fire within the home, probably water around,

  92. something that is a constant threat to his kind of health and life.

  93. So what this dad is coming to Jesus with is something pretty intense.

  94. The life of his son.

  95. And so his son has been suffering greatly.

  96. Now, could you imagine being the dad or the mom of a boy who's suffering this way?

  97. You would be on constant watch.

  98. It would be vigilant.

  99. It would be wearying.

  100. And so this dad comes to Jesus,

  101. and he drops on his knees just to show his desperation.

  102. And he says, Lord, have mercy.

  103. Help us.

  104. My son is suffering terribly.

  105. He's on the verge of death almost daily.

  106. Help.

  107. And if that wasn't bad enough, look at what he says in verse 16.

  108. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.

  109. So the other nine disciples were down kind of doing the work,

  110. while Jesus and his three disciples were up on the mountain.

  111. And this dad brought his son to the other nine disciples,

  112. and they were unable to heal him.

  113. And so it's kind of like this.

  114. Have you ever been talking in like in a store before,

  115. and you're talking to the person behind kind of the counter,

  116. and you're like, you know what?

  117. I return this.

  118. I just want to get my money back.

  119. And they're like, I don't know what you're talking about.

  120. We cannot help you.

  121. And then you see the supervisor walk in.

  122. You're like, oh, you're the guy I need to talk to.

  123. And what this dad sees is the supervisor coming down off the mountain

  124. and says, you're the guy I need to talk to about this.

  125. You can do something about this.

  126. These nine disciples can't.

  127. And so what does Jesus do?

  128. Look at verse 17.

  129. Oh, faithless and twisted generation.

  130. When you see that word, oh, that's an emotional response of Jesus.

  131. Oh, faithless and twisted generation.

  132. When Jesus says generation, he's talking about all the people.

  133. He's talking about all the people of Israel, his disciples included.

  134. And when he says faithless, it's not a compliment.

  135. He's saying a lack of trust in God.

  136. And twisted, that's distortion.

  137. It's corrupted belief.

  138. For those, there was a lack of trust.

  139. And for some who trusted, it was a corrupted, distorted trust,

  140. a misunderstanding trust.

  141. And so he says, oh, faithless and twisted generation.

  142. And then two rhetorical questions.

  143. How long am I going to be with you?

  144. The point is, I'm not going to be with you much longer.

  145. And the second rhetorical question,

  146. how long am I going to bear with you?

  147. How long am I going to have to do what you seemingly can't do,

  148. but should be able to do?

  149. And then he says, bring them here to me.

  150. Jesus is essentially saying, I'll take care of this.

  151. In verse 18, we read that Jesus rebukes the demon.

  152. Now, that should catch your attention.

  153. Because up to this point, there's been no mention of a demon.

  154. Apparently, maybe, perhaps, these disciples have been treating this boy.

  155. They've been treating symptoms and not the actual cause.

  156. They've been trying to heal this boy of his epilepsy,

  157. not address the demon that's apparently the cause of this.

  158. And so Jesus rebukes the demon,

  159. and it comes out of the boy,

  160. and we read that he was healed instantly.

  161. And on a side note,

  162. we see Jesus' authority exercised again.

  163. He speaks, and demons obey him.

  164. He has authority over the demonic world.

  165. And by the way, this will be the last time in Matthew

  166. Jesus casts out a demon.

  167. So Jesus casts out the demon.

  168. Now, I'm guessing that for some of you in the room,

  169. you're asking yourself a question.

  170. And it's a question that goes like this.

  171. What is the relationship

  172. between demonic influence

  173. and physical illness?

  174. So apparently here,

  175. there was a demonic influence

  176. that was the cause of this boy's epilepsy.

  177. And Jesus casts out the demon,

  178. and the boy was healed instantly.

  179. So what's the relationship?

  180. Now, we can make one of two mistakes.

  181. Mistake number one is this,

  182. that we think that behind every sneeze,

  183. cold, and flu is a demon.

  184. That's mistake number one.

  185. And we know that's not the case,

  186. because remember the woman

  187. with 12 years of bleeding?

  188. She came up to Jesus,

  189. and what did Jesus do?

  190. Did he cast her,

  191. cast a demon out of her?

  192. No.

  193. He healed her of her bleeding.

  194. So mistake number one

  195. is thinking that demons

  196. are the sole cause of every illness

  197. that we experience today.

  198. That's mistake number one.

  199. The mistake number two

  200. is on the other side.

  201. And that is thinking that

  202. there's no demonic influence

  203. causing any kind of physical illness

  204. in our day today.

  205. That's mistake number two.

  206. That's kind of writing off demonic influence

  207. as kind of a bygone era.

  208. And so we as a church recognize

  209. we've got room to grow here,

  210. but we also need to be paying attention

  211. to what's the true cause

  212. of what is happening in a person.

  213. And so when you go back up the passage

  214. and you see this little boy

  215. who's being cast into a fire

  216. and into water on a regular basis

  217. who is seeking to be destroyed,

  218. that should raise a question of

  219. what's at work in this child

  220. that would seemingly,

  221. regularly try to destroy his life.

  222. The MO of the demonic world

  223. is to distort and destroy

  224. image bearers of God.

  225. And so we look at this passage,

  226. it raises a question,

  227. and we're going to move forward

  228. saying as a church,

  229. we're not going to overreact

  230. or underreact,

  231. but we're going to seek God

  232. in the moment

  233. and respond in faith.

  234. But I need to let you know

  235. that this passage isn't in your Bible

  236. to answer that question.

  237. This passage is here

  238. to address the issue of a lack of faith.

  239. Let's read on.

  240. After Jesus rebukes this demon,

  241. in verse 19,

  242. the disciples come to Jesus privately

  243. and they ask him,

  244. why could we not cast it out?

  245. And so one of the things

  246. that we've learned about the disciples

  247. is that they tend to forget quickly

  248. and they tend to not exercise belief often.

  249. They misunderstand.

  250. Jesus is constantly kind of correcting

  251. and rebuking them.

  252. And so I think the question comes down to,

  253. you know,

  254. what's going on?

  255. What's going on here?

  256. Jesus,

  257. they come to Jesus privately

  258. and for that,

  259. they show themselves

  260. to doing something right.

  261. They recognize something,

  262. something is off

  263. and they go to Jesus

  264. for an explanation.

  265. And they say,

  266. what's wrong with us?

  267. Why couldn't we cast this out?

  268. Now,

  269. I tend to think

  270. that this question

  271. that the disciples are asking

  272. is a question

  273. that many of us

  274. as followers of Jesus,

  275. we ask in a variety

  276. of different forms.

  277. Why isn't this happening?

  278. Why isn't this good thing

  279. that I imagine

  280. that would bring honor to God

  281. not happening?

  282. And the disciples ask a question

  283. that I think we can say is,

  284. what's wrong with me?

  285. What's wrong with us?

  286. It kind of shows up

  287. in things like this.

  288. When I share the gospel

  289. with somebody,

  290. why aren't more people

  291. coming to faith than Jesus?

  292. What's wrong with me?

  293. It's,

  294. what am I not doing right?

  295. What I'm trying to help

  296. people change?

  297. Why don't they change?

  298. What's wrong with me?

  299. Shows up in another

  300. kind of set of questions

  301. like this.

  302. Why can't I stop

  303. being a certain way?

  304. Why can't I stop sinning?

  305. Why can't I stop gossiping?

  306. Why can't I stop

  307. flying off the handle?

  308. Why can't I stop

  309. lusting after

  310. these certain situations?

  311. Why do I always seemingly

  312. want something new

  313. every month?

  314. It's just kind of

  315. a rotation of greed.

  316. What's wrong with me?

  317. The question is one of power.

  318. A lack of ability.

  319. A lack of power

  320. to do something.

  321. We expect change

  322. and it doesn't happen.

  323. And so we ask a question like,

  324. what's wrong?

  325. Now there's a variety

  326. of different answers

  327. in your Bible

  328. to that question.

  329. Jesus points to one answer

  330. and it's in verse 20.

  331. So the disciples ask,

  332. why could we not

  333. cast the demon out?

  334. And Jesus says to them,

  335. because of your little faith.

  336. As soon as you read that,

  337. when you read that word little,

  338. you may be thinking

  339. like quantity, size.

  340. But we got to ask,

  341. is that what Jesus really means?

  342. Because in just a few more words,

  343. he says this.

  344. Truly I say to you,

  345. if you have faith

  346. like a grain of a mustard seed,

  347. you will say to this mountain,

  348. move from here to there

  349. and it will move

  350. and nothing will be impossible

  351. for you.

  352. So it seems like

  353. there's a certain kind

  354. of little faith

  355. that is powerless.

  356. And then there's this other

  357. kind of little faith,

  358. mustard seed sized faith,

  359. that can move mountains.

  360. that goes for the impossible.

  361. What's the difference?

  362. The difference

  363. is in the object

  364. of faith.

  365. The difference is

  366. who you're trusting in.

  367. The difference is

  368. who you're relying on.

  369. When Jesus talks about

  370. your little faith here,

  371. it's not so much

  372. a quantity of faith

  373. he's talking about.

  374. He's talking about

  375. the quality of your faith

  376. and very specifically

  377. the object of your faith,

  378. who you are trusting in.

  379. Another way to say it is

  380. Jesus is like

  381. when he says

  382. because of your little faith,

  383. he's saying

  384. because of your misplaced faith,

  385. because of your weak faith,

  386. because of your

  387. kind of deluded faith.

  388. So what Jesus is putting

  389. his finger on

  390. is a matter of

  391. quality of faith.

  392. Now,

  393. this past week,

  394. I did a little study

  395. on that phrase,

  396. little faith.

  397. And it was really interesting.

  398. I want to share with you

  399. what was interesting about it.

  400. That little phrase,

  401. OU of little faith,

  402. it shows up four times

  403. in Matthew.

  404. And the first time

  405. is when Jesus

  406. is talking about anxiety.

  407. OU of little faith,

  408. don't be anxious.

  409. The next time it shows up

  410. is when the disciples

  411. are on the sea

  412. and there's a raging storm

  413. and he's asleep

  414. and they wake him up

  415. and he says,

  416. OU of little faith,

  417. why are you afraid?

  418. The next time it shows up

  419. is in Matthew 14, 31

  420. and Jesus has just called Peter

  421. to come to him on the water.

  422. And Peter sees the waves

  423. and he starts to sink.

  424. He cries out.

  425. Jesus delivers him

  426. and says,

  427. why do you doubt,

  428. OU of little faith?

  429. Doubt.

  430. And then in Matthew 16,

  431. Jesus is warning his disciples

  432. about the leaven

  433. of the Sadducees and Pharisees.

  434. They think he's talking about

  435. just kind of logistics

  436. and food and stuff like that.

  437. Total misunderstanding.

  438. And he says,

  439. why do you not understand,

  440. OU of little faith?

  441. And so when you look at

  442. what Matthew says,

  443. what's around little faith,

  444. there's something competing

  445. for one's heart.

  446. Anxiety, fear, doubt,

  447. misunderstanding.

  448. These are the things

  449. that vie for your heart

  450. and will distract you

  451. from trusting fully

  452. in your great God.

  453. Not even to mention pride,

  454. which is our tendency

  455. to rely on ourselves

  456. instead of God.

  457. So these are the things

  458. that draw our heart's trust

  459. off of our great God

  460. and sets it on things

  461. that cannot deliver,

  462. that are impotent

  463. and powerless.

  464. And it shows up in questions

  465. like,

  466. why can't I do this?

  467. What's happening?

  468. What's wrong?

  469. And so Jesus is pointing

  470. his finger to this

  471. weak, corrupt,

  472. deluded, misplaced faith.

  473. It's an impotent faith

  474. because it's an imposter faith.

  475. It's trusting in something

  476. other than God.

  477. faith.

  478. And then he points us

  479. to the real stuff.

  480. Faith like the grain

  481. of a mustard seed.

  482. It's the size of a pinhead.

  483. And it's small faith

  484. in a great God

  485. and it accomplishes much.

  486. Our great God

  487. is the God of the impossible.

  488. He can do whatever He wants.

  489. And when we trust Him

  490. in the words of William Carey,

  491. the father of modern day missions,

  492. he says,

  493. expect great things from God

  494. and attempt great things from God.

  495. That comes from a heart of faith

  496. in the one true living God.

  497. Not in something else.

  498. The difference between

  499. this little faith

  500. that Jesus is rebuking

  501. and this mustard,

  502. seed-sized faith

  503. is the object of the faith.

  504. What you're trusting in.

  505. It's either

  506. something other than God

  507. or God.

  508. And what Jesus is commending us here

  509. is trust God

  510. and He will accomplish much.

  511. So, hey,

  512. this is the appetizer this morning.

  513. This is to stimulate your faith buds.

  514. In order to stimulate your faith buds,

  515. we had to say,

  516. hey,

  517. this is what gets in the way

  518. of your faith.

  519. Things like anxiety,

  520. things like fear,

  521. things like misunderstanding

  522. and pride.

  523. And what we do

  524. is we turn from those things

  525. and trust in our God

  526. over and over and over again.

  527. That's what disciples do.

  528. They trust in God,

  529. in Jesus,

  530. over and over again.

  531. So, I hope this is stirring up

  532. a desire in you

  533. to trust God more.

  534. And so now,

  535. in light of that,

  536. let's move

  537. from this

  538. kind of base of the mountain

  539. and let's move

  540. into Galilee

  541. a little bit more

  542. for the main course

  543. this morning.

  544. Jesus has exposed

  545. little faith

  546. in His disciples

  547. and in us

  548. and now

  549. He's going to

  550. focus us,

  551. focus our faith

  552. on Himself.

  553. Notice,

  554. in verses 22 and 23,

  555. as they were gathering

  556. in Galilee,

  557. Jesus said to them,

  558. the Son of Man

  559. is about to be delivered

  560. into the hands of men

  561. and they will kill Him

  562. and He will be raised

  563. on the third day

  564. and His disciples

  565. were greatly distressed.

  566. Jesus is focusing

  567. His disciples forward

  568. on His future work

  569. on the cross

  570. and resurrection

  571. in Jerusalem.

  572. And there's a reason

  573. why He's doing it.

  574. He's wanting them

  575. to set their hearts

  576. on what He's about to do.

  577. This is the second

  578. explicit prediction

  579. Jesus makes

  580. of His coming passion,

  581. His suffering,

  582. His death,

  583. and His resurrection.

  584. The first one

  585. we saw in chapter 16, 21,

  586. remember,

  587. Peter says,

  588. you are the Christ,

  589. the Son of the living God.

  590. And Jesus,

  591. right soon thereafter,

  592. He clarifies it.

  593. He says,

  594. guys,

  595. just to be sure

  596. you know what the Christ

  597. is going to do,

  598. I must go to Jerusalem.

  599. I am going to suffer.

  600. I am going to be killed.

  601. I am going to be raised.

  602. Jews of that time,

  603. the disciples,

  604. they were expecting

  605. a political Messiah

  606. who would deliver

  607. ethnic Israel

  608. from the tyranny of Rome

  609. to be reestablished

  610. in its former national glory.

  611. And what Jesus is saying

  612. with these passion predictions

  613. is that's not what

  614. this Christ has come to do.

  615. The kingdom

  616. that Jesus was establishing,

  617. this saving reign of God,

  618. it would be established

  619. by His betrayal,

  620. through His suffering,

  621. through His crucifixion,

  622. and His resurrection.

  623. That is what would establish

  624. His saving reign on earth.

  625. The kingdom of God

  626. is a kingdom

  627. that delivers sinners

  628. from their sins.

  629. And so in the second

  630. passion prediction,

  631. Jesus is preparing

  632. His disciples

  633. for what will come.

  634. We're looking at

  635. maybe a month,

  636. two months out,

  637. and Jesus is saying

  638. this is what's going to happen.

  639. I'm going to be delivered.

  640. They will kill me.

  641. I'll be raised

  642. on the third day.

  643. Did you see the prediction

  644. of His death?

  645. Did you see the prediction

  646. of His resurrection?

  647. But there's something new

  648. to this prediction.

  649. It's that whole

  650. the Son of Man

  651. is about to be delivered

  652. into the hands of men.

  653. It's the first time

  654. Jesus talked about

  655. His betrayal.

  656. It's going to happen.

  657. And in verse 23,

  658. notice how His disciples respond.

  659. They were greatly distressed.

  660. It's sinking into these guys

  661. that they're going to Jerusalem

  662. and it's not going to be pretty

  663. that Jesus keeps on talking

  664. about how He's going to die.

  665. But now,

  666. someone's going to betray Him?

  667. Makes sense that they'd be distressed.

  668. Let me ask you this question.

  669. As a disciple living 2,000 years

  670. after the fact,

  671. when you read these words,

  672. should you be distressed?

  673. What Jesus was speaking of

  674. in the future tense here

  675. of what will come,

  676. we speak of in the past tense

  677. of what has happened.

  678. Jesus is speaking about

  679. what He would do

  680. now in 2017.

  681. We speak of what He's talking about

  682. as what He's done.

  683. He's talking about

  684. what He will do

  685. to accomplish our salvation.

  686. today,

  687. today,

  688. we declare

  689. Christ's betrayal,

  690. His suffering,

  691. His death,

  692. and His resurrection

  693. as past historic events

  694. that have happened.

  695. And they're not distressing news.

  696. It's good news.

  697. It's gospel news.

  698. His betrayal,

  699. suffering,

  700. death,

  701. resurrection,

  702. it was all necessary

  703. to Him accomplishing

  704. the salvation

  705. that you so desperately

  706. needed as a sinner.

  707. That word gospel,

  708. that word is used

  709. in antiquity

  710. to describe

  711. a heralding

  712. of a victorious event.

  713. So just imagine this.

  714. Kenosha County,

  715. we become our own nation.

  716. Lake County in Illinois

  717. becomes their own nation.

  718. They attack us.

  719. We respond.

  720. We send forces down.

  721. We defeat them.

  722. We're victorious.

  723. Do you know what

  724. we would do?

  725. We would send a runner

  726. to the public square

  727. of this city.

  728. And that runner

  729. would herald forth,

  730. Our army has proven victorious.

  731. We have beaten

  732. the army of Lake County.

  733. Good news.

  734. Or maybe you're a Cubs fan.

  735. November 3rd, 2016,

  736. Paul Sullivan,

  737. Chicago Tribune,

  738. at 12.30 a.m. writes,

  739. Chicago Cubs win

  740. World Series 8-7.

  741. Good news.

  742. God,

  743. good news for those

  744. under a curse.

  745. It goes on to say

  746. they did it.

  747. The Cubs did it.

  748. It's good news.

  749. But that good news

  750. in November 3rd, 2016

  751. was temporary good news.

  752. It was good news

  753. for that season.

  754. Not so much good news

  755. for this season.

  756. What the gospel

  757. of Jesus Christ is,

  758. it's good news.

  759. It's heralding.

  760. It's declaring an event

  761. that has happened.

  762. That Jesus,

  763. the Christ,

  764. was betrayed,

  765. suffered,

  766. died,

  767. and was raised.

  768. It took place.

  769. And it's not temporary

  770. good news.

  771. It's forever good news.

  772. It's a good news

  773. of declaring

  774. that Jesus' death

  775. and resurrection

  776. defeated sin

  777. and death

  778. forever.

  779. It was a decisive act.

  780. It happened.

  781. So when we read

  782. this second prediction

  783. of Christ's coming

  784. passion,

  785. it's not distressing

  786. news to us

  787. living on this side

  788. in 2017

  789. looking back

  790. on what Jesus did.

  791. This is good news.

  792. It's refocusing news.

  793. It's refreshing news.

  794. It's news that

  795. should make you

  796. want to rejoice.

  797. That God in Christ

  798. would do this

  799. for you.

  800. The Apostle Paul

  801. talks about this

  802. what Jesus

  803. is talking about

  804. in the future.

  805. The Apostle Paul

  806. talks about it

  807. as being of

  808. first importance.

  809. That Christ died

  810. according to the Scriptures.

  811. He was buried

  812. and on the third day

  813. He was raised

  814. according to the Scriptures.

  815. First importance.

  816. Jesus will repeatedly

  817. speak of this.

  818. His coming suffering,

  819. His coming death,

  820. His coming resurrection.

  821. He repeats it

  822. over and over again

  823. for the balance

  824. of the Gospel of Matthew

  825. because it's so important.

  826. It's of first importance.

  827. And why is it?

  828. It's what God did

  829. to accomplish

  830. our salvation

  831. from sin.

  832. The cross

  833. is the hot spot

  834. of God's

  835. work of salvation

  836. for the fullness of time.

  837. it's there

  838. that He won

  839. our victory

  840. over sin and death.

  841. So this morning

  842. as part of taking

  843. this kind of

  844. Gospel main course

  845. realize that

  846. what Jesus

  847. is speaking of

  848. in the future tense

  849. we speak of

  850. in the past tense.

  851. It happened.

  852. And it's through

  853. His death

  854. and resurrection

  855. that secured

  856. our justification

  857. being made right

  858. with God.

  859. no more condemnation.

  860. It secured

  861. our adoption

  862. our being brought

  863. into God's family.

  864. Now by the Spirit

  865. we say Abba Father.

  866. It secured

  867. our redemption

  868. being set free

  869. from the power

  870. of sin.

  871. It secured

  872. our reconciliation

  873. being made

  874. at peace

  875. with God Himself.

  876. It secured

  877. our sanctification

  878. being made holy

  879. over time.

  880. It secured

  881. our glorification

  882. that day

  883. when we walk

  884. into the very

  885. presence of Jesus.

  886. Terry Johnson

  887. knows now

  888. being walking

  889. into the presence

  890. of Jesus

  891. without any

  892. encumbrance

  893. of sin.

  894. What He did

  895. 2,000 years ago

  896. on the cross

  897. and His resurrection

  898. secured all of it.

  899. Our justification

  900. our sanctification

  901. our glorification

  902. our entire

  903. salvation

  904. was accomplished

  905. through His death

  906. and resurrection.

  907. And when His disciples

  908. hear Him

  909. talking about this

  910. in the future

  911. they're distressed.

  912. When we hear this

  913. this is music

  914. to our ears.

  915. This should remind you

  916. of what your

  917. great God

  918. did for you

  919. in order to

  920. reconcile you

  921. to Himself.

  922. and this is

  923. what we stand on.

  924. This is what

  925. we trust in.

  926. This is what

  927. we believe.

  928. This is what

  929. we hold true.

  930. This is what

  931. we build our lives on.

  932. This is what

  933. defines us.

  934. It's the main dish

  935. and it never gets old.

  936. So what Jesus

  937. does here

  938. He's pointing

  939. His disciples

  940. to something future

  941. but for us

  942. who live

  943. in 2017

  944. we're reminded

  945. of what He did

  946. in the past.

  947. He accomplished

  948. our salvation.

  949. So we've

  950. looked at

  951. His exposing

  952. of our faith

  953. and now He's

  954. focused us

  955. on what

  956. He would do

  957. what He's done

  958. at the cross

  959. and now

  960. very briefly

  961. 24-27

  962. Jesus

  963. He encourages

  964. our faith.

  965. I'll just read

  966. that for you.

  967. When they came

  968. to Capernaum

  969. the collectors

  970. of the two

  971. drachma tax

  972. went up to Peter

  973. and said

  974. does your teacher

  975. not pay the tax?

  976. And Peter said

  977. yes

  978. and when Peter

  979. came into the house

  980. Jesus spoke to him

  981. first.

  982. Jesus was anticipating

  983. something.

  984. What do you think

  985. Simon?

  986. from whom

  987. do kings

  988. of the earth

  989. take toll

  990. or tax

  991. from their sons

  992. or from others?

  993. And when He said

  994. from others

  995. Jesus said to him

  996. then the sons

  997. are free.

  998. However

  999. not to give

  1000. offense to them

  1001. go to the sea

  1002. and cast a hook

  1003. and take the first

  1004. fish that comes up

  1005. and when you open

  1006. its mouth

  1007. you will find

  1008. a shekel.

  1009. Take that

1010. and give it to them

  1011. for me

  1012. and for yourself.

  1013. So now

  1014. we're at

  1015. Capernaum

  1016. which is

  1017. kind of

  1018. Jesus'

  1019. base of operations

  1020. for His ministry

  1021. in Galilee.

  1022. And Jesus

  1023. and Peter

  1024. are together

  1025. and they're

  1026. approached

  1027. by two

  1028. Jewish

  1029. tax collectors

  1030. and they're

  1031. collecting

  1032. a Jewish tax

  1033. and it's

  1034. based out

  1035. of Exodus

    Exodus 30 chapter mention

  1036. chapter 30

  1037. when men

  1038. over 21

  1039. had to pay

  1040. a half

  1041. a shekel tax

  1042. and that tax

  1043. would go to

  1044. the temple

  1045. upkeep

  1046. in Jerusalem

  1047. and not only

  1048. that

  1049. this tax

  1050. was taken

  1051. about a month

  1052. before Passover

  1053. and so

  1054. very nimbly

  1055. Matthew

  1056. is putting

  1057. in front of us

  1058. Jerusalem

  1059. and Passover

  1060. are on the horizon

  1061. and so

  1062. these tax

  1063. collectors

  1064. are kind of

  1065. reminding Peter

  1066. hey is your

  1067. rabbi

  1068. is your teacher

  1069. going to pay

  1070. this tax

  1071. and Peter

  1072. says

  1073. oh yeah

  1074. he's planning

  1075. on it

  1076. now I just

  1077. want to remind

  1078. you now

  1079. that

  1080. remember back

  1081. in Luke 2

  1082. when Jesus

  1083. was a boy

  1084. he was

  1085. he went back

  1086. to Jerusalem

  1087. and when his

  1088. parents caught

  1089. up with him

  1090. and they say

  1091. hey what were

  1092. you doing

  1093. he said

  1094. don't you

  1095. realize I'd

  1096. be in my

  1097. father's house

  1098. having said

  1099. that

  1100. verse 25

  1101. Peter says

  1102. yes he's

  1103. going to pay

  1104. it

  1105. and then

  1106. Peter's

  1107. going to go

  1108. into the house

  1109. and he's

  1110. going to raise

  1111. this issue

  1112. with Jesus

  1113. Jesus what

  1114. about this

  1115. two drachma

  1116. tax

  1117. knowing that

  1118. Jesus anticipates

  1119. it and he

  1120. says this very

  1121. interesting thing

  1122. to Peter

  1123. what do you

  1124. think Simon

  1125. from whom

  1126. do kings

  1127. on the earth

  1128. take toll

  1129. or tax

  1130. from their

  1131. sons

  1132. or from

  1133. others

  1134. another way

  1135. to say

  1136. it is

  1137. this

  1138. royalty

  1139. Peter

  1140. if you're

  1141. in the

  1142. royal family

  1143. are you

  1144. going to

  1145. tax people

  1146. in the

  1147. royal family

  1148. or are you

  1149. going to

  1150. tax those

  1151. outside of

  1152. the royal

  1153. family

  1154. and Peter

  1155. says

  1156. well those

  1157. outside of

  1158. the royal

  1159. family

  1160. to which

  1161. Peter

  1162. Jesus

  1163. says

  1164. then the

  1165. sons are

  1166. free

  1167. do you

  1168. know what

  1169. Jesus is

  1170. saying

  1171. I don't

  1172. need to

  1173. pay this

  1174. tax

  1175. I'm a

  1176. son of

  1177. the living

  1178. God

  1179. this is

  1180. my father's

  1181. house

  1182. I don't

  1183. need to

  1184. pay this

  1185. tax

  1186. and neither

  1187. do you

  1188. Peter

  1189. because you're

  1190. with me

  1191. and then

  1192. he goes

  1193. on to

  1194. say

  1195. however

  1196. not to

  1197. give offense

  1198. to them

  1199. and what

  1200. Jesus is

  1201. saying

  1202. there is

  1203. hey

  1204. I'm not

  1205. going to

  1206. claim this

  1207. right

  1208. I've got

  1209. other more

  1210. important

  1211. business I

  1212. need to

  1213. do in

  1214. Jerusalem

  1215. and so

  1216. we're going

  1217. to pay

  1218. this tax

  1219. and here's

  1220. how we're

  1221. going to

  1222. pay it

  1223. and he

  1224. goes on

  1225. to sell

  1226. Peter

  1227. he says

  1228. go to

  1229. the sea

  1230. cast in

  1231. the hook

  1232. take up

  1233. the first

  1234. fish that

  1235. comes

  1236. and when

  1237. you open

  1238. its mouth

  1239. take out

  1240. the shekel

  1241. and give

  1242. it to

  1243. the tax

  1244. collectors

  1245. and then

  1246. what happens

  1247. we don't

  1248. know what

  1249. happens

  1250. Matthew

  1251. doesn't tell

  1252. us what

  1253. happens

  1254. we're left

  1255. guessing

  1256. but you know

  1257. what a solid

  1258. guess would

  1259. be

  1260. it happened

  1261. so check

  1262. this out

  1263. imagine if

  1264. you're

  1265. Peter

  1266. and your

  1267. your faith

  1268. needs some

  1269. building up

  1270. your savior

  1271. just told

  1272. you to go

  1273. to the sea

  1274. of Galilee

  1275. throw in

  1276. a hook

  1277. you go down

  1278. throw in

  1279. a hook

  1280. you're like

  1281. all right

  1282. I'll do

  1283. this for

  1284. Jesus

  1285. there's a

  1286. tug on the

  1287. line

  1288. you pull

  1289. up the

  1290. first fish

  1291. that comes

  1292. what's going

  1293. on in your

  1294. heart right

  1295. now

  1296. if you're

  1297. Peter

  1298. huh

  1299. I wonder

  1300. you pull

  1301. the fish

  1302. up

  1303. you open

  1304. its mouth

  1305. and when

  1306. your eyes

  1307. fall on

  1308. silver

  1309. what is

  1310. going on

  1311. in your

  1312. heart

  1313. in that

  1314. moment

  1315. joy

  1316. delight

  1317. you're saying

  1318. things like

  1319. I can't

  1320. believe this

  1321. it's really

  1322. true

  1323. and you

  1324. reach into

  1325. that fish's

  1326. mouth

  1327. and you

  1328. pull out

  1329. that

  1330. Greek

  1331. stutter

  1332. that's what

  1333. it was

  1334. and you're

  1335. feeling it

  1336. in your

  1337. hands

  1338. and you're

  1339. thinking

  1340. how did

  1341. he know

  1342. that

  1343. and you're

  1344. walking

  1345. this

  1346. Greek

  1347. stutter

  1348. worth

  1349. four

  1350. drachma

  1351. so this

  1352. covers all

  1353. the tax

  1354. and you're

  1355. bringing it

  1356. to the tax

  1357. collectors

  1358. and you're

  1359. thinking

  1360. the whole

  1361. time

  1362. how did

  1363. he know

  1364. that

  1365. who is

  1366. this guy

  1367. he is

  1368. stinking

  1369. amazing

  1370. and you

  1371. put it

  1372. into the

  1373. hand of

  1374. that tax

  1375. collector

  1376. you know

  1377. what you're

  1378. thinking

  1379. man this

  1380. is just

  1381. enough

  1382. just on

  1383. time

  1384. and just

  1385. for

  1386. me

  1387. you see

  1388. how encouraging

  1389. that would

  1390. be

  1391. now

  1392. if for the

  1393. sake of the

  1394. gospel

  1395. Jesus is able

  1396. to provide

  1397. for his

  1398. own like

  1399. this

  1400. he's going

  1401. to provide

  1402. for us

  1403. too

  1404. he's going

  1405. to meet

  1406. all of

  1407. our needs

  1408. out of

  1409. nowhere

  1410. here at

  1411. this church

  1412. out of

  1413. nowhere

  1414. people will

  1415. send us

  1416. money

  1417. and it

  1418. comes in

  1419. at just

  1420. the right

  1421. time

  1422. do you

  1423. know how

  1424. we make

  1425. sense

  1426. of it

  1427. our

  1428. Jesus

  1429. is looking

  1430. out for

  1431. us

  1432. he knows

  1433. our needs

  1434. it's like

  1435. silver in a

  1436. fish mouth

  1437. encourages

  1438. our faith

  1439. so think

  1440. about it

  1441. this way

  1442. if our

  1443. God is

  1444. able to

  1445. provide

  1446. for everyday

  1447. needs

  1448. in

  1449. unimaginable

  1450. ways

  1451. he's not

  1452. limited

  1453. if you

  1454. provided

  1455. Jesus

  1456. for our

  1457. greatest

  1458. need

  1459. he's going

  1460. to provide

  1461. for all

  1462. of our

  1463. other needs

  1464. as we

  1465. seek to

  1466. follow

  1467. him

  1468. it

  1469. stirs up

  1470. that

  1471. William

  1472. Carey

  1473. quote

  1474. again

  1475. expect

  1476. great

  1477. things

  1478. from

  1479. God

  1480. attempt

  1481. great

  1482. things

  1483. from

  1484. God

  1485. and

  1486. we're

  1487. going

  1488. to

  1489. trust

  1490. he's

  1491. going

  1492. to

  1493. encourage

  1494. us

  1495. with

  1496. what

  1497. we

  1498. need

  1499. right

  1500. at

  1501. just

  1502. of the

  1503. right

  1504. time

  1505. at

  1506. just

  1507. enough

  1508. and

  1509. just

  1510. for

  1511. us

  1512. he's

  1513. that

  1514. kind

  1515. of

  1516. God

  1517. so

  1518. who

  1519. is

  1520. this

  1521. guy

  1522. he's

  1523. the

  1524. Christ

  1525. he's

  1526. the

  1527. son

  1528. of

  1529. the

  1530. living

  1531. God

  1532. he

  1533. calls

  1534. us

  1535. to

  1536. follow

  1537. him

  1538. to

  1539. deny

  1540. ourselves

  1541. take

  1542. up

  1543. our

  1544. crosses

  1545. and

  1546. follow

  1547. him

  1548. and

  1549. he

  1550. is

  1551. worthy

  1552. of

  1553. all

  1554. of

  1555. our

  1556. trust

  1557. we've

  1558. had

  1559. a

  1560. little

  1561. appetizer

  1562. got

  1563. our

  1564. faith

  1565. exposed

  1566. so

  1567. we

  1568. turn

  1569. from

  1570. those

  1571. things

  1572. and

  1573. turn

  1574. to

  1575. Jesus

  1576. and

  1577. then

  1578. he

  1579. focused

  1580. our

  1581. faith

  1582. on

  1583. what

  1584. he

  1585. has

  1586. done

  1587. the

  1588. main

  1589. thing

  1590. the

  1591. cross

  1592. and

  1593. his

  1594. resurrection

  1595. we

  1596. set

  1597. our

  1598. hearts

  1599. on

  1600. that

  1601. and

  1602. then

  1603. he

  1604. encourages

  1605. us

  1606. along

  1607. the

  1608. way

  1609. we're

  1610. going

  1611. to

  1612. trust

  1613. that

  1614. he's

  1615. going

  1616. to

  1617. just

  1618. provide

  1619. what

  1620. we

  1621. need

  1622. at

  1623. just

  1624. the

  1625. right

  1626. time

  1627. just

  1628. for

  1629. us

  1630. he's

  1631. the

  1632. one

  1633. he's

  1634. the

  1635. one

  1636. we're

  1637. going

  1638. to

  1639. follow

  1640. if

  1641. you

  1642. haven't

  1643. started

  1644. to

  1645. follow

  1646. Jesus

  1647. you

  1648. can

  1649. trust

  1650. him

  1651. and

  1652. if

  1653. you

  1654. are

  1655. following

  1656. Jesus

  1657. but

  1658. you've

  1659. wavered

  1660. oh

  1661. you

  1662. can

  1663. trust

  1664. him

  1665. all

  1666. the

  1667. more

  1668. he's

  1669. everything

  1670. you

  1671. need

  1672. let's

  1673. pray

  1674. God

  1675. in

  1676. heaven

  1677. would

  1678. you

  1679. just

  1680. use

  1681. these

  1682. words

  1683. these

  1684. words

  1685. of

  1686. Jesus

  1687. to

  1688. stir

  1689. faith

  1690. to

  1691. strengthen

  1692. faith

  1693. to

  1694. purify

  1695. faith

  1696. we

  1697. pray

  1698. father

  1699. that

  1700. you

  1701. would

  1702. make

  1703. us

  1704. more

  1705. and

  1706. more

  1707. confident

  1708. in

  1709. our

  1710. Lord

  1711. Jesus

  1712. day

  1713. by

  1714. day

  1715. God

  1716. it's

  1717. our

  1718. desire

  1719. to

  1720. follow

  1721. you

  1722. day

  1723. by

  1724. day

  1725. help

  1726. us

  1727. in

  1728. Jesus

  1729. name

  1730. amen
