  1. Who is the GOAT?

  2. It's this sports term for greatest of all time.

  3. Tom Brady, five-time Super Bowl winning quarterback

  4. of the New England Patriots,

  5. often called the GOAT the greatest of all time

  6. by many of his peers and many fans around the country and world.

  7. Usain Bolt, perhaps the fastest man who ever lived.

  8. No one ran a 200-meter sprint like him.

  9. Some athletes are even nicknamed the Great One,

  10. like former hockey player Wayne Gretzky,

  11. or self-proclaimed it as they're preparing for a heavyweight boxing fight

  12. like Muhammad Ali, who called himself the greatest in the world,

  13. the greatest fighter the world had ever known.

  14. In other circles, of course, celebrities are valued for their social greatness,

  15. their status amongst mere mortals like us,

  16. who, unlike them, don't get the red carpet treatment,

  17. don't have paparazzi taking photographs

  18. when we're eating dinner at the local restaurants.

  19. We're not ending up on the late-night TV shows like they are.

  20. We're not getting book deals.

  21. We're not the front-page news and the gossip columns.

  22. It's hard to imagine American life apart from ranking almost everything, isn't it?

  23. We want to know what the best burger joint in Kenosha is.

  24. We sort of argue even over the best Christian preachers,

  25. the best smartphone.

  26. Are you an Android person?

  27. Are you an Apple person?

  28. And that sort of defines your worth in our culture.

  29. And then once you've got the phone,

  30. what service provider is going to provide the best coverage for your network?

  31. We want quality products.

  32. We want great products.

  33. We want to feel important ourselves.

  34. We want to be well thought of.

  35. We want to be great.

  36. We aspire to be great,

  37. even if it's in our own sort of self-defined ways.

  38. We want to be great.

  39. We want to be recognized.

  40. We want to be important.

  41. Before we know it,

  42. the world's way of defining greatness

  43. and status and importance has crept into our Christian experience.

  44. It skews our worldview.

  45. It bends how we think.

  46. And it messes with our value system.

  47. Well,

  48. we recognize our need to be reoriented

  49. around a different understanding of how things work,

  50. a different understanding of status,

  51. a different understanding of greatness.

  52. We need to redefine and pursue greatness

  53. as defined and exampled by Jesus Christ

  54. and no one and nothing else.

  55. If we embrace our culture's definition of greatness,

  56. which is found through success and ladder climbing,

  57. our kingdom usefulness plummets.

  58. But if we listen to Jesus' definition,

  59. we can pursue true greatness.

  60. We can find real value

  61. and true esteem in what God says is great.

  62. So let's read this text together

  63. and consider this morning

  64. what Jesus exactly is calling us to as his disciples.

  65. This is Matthew chapter 20,

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  66. starting in verse 17.

  67. And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,

  68. he took the 12 disciples aside

  69. and on the way he said to them,

  70. See, we are going up to Jerusalem

  71. and the Son of Man will be delivered over

  72. to the chief priests and the scribes

  73. and they will condemn him to death

  74. and deliver him over to the Gentiles

  75. to be mocked and flogged and crucified

  76. and he will be raised on the third day.

  77. Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee

  78. came up to him with her sons

  79. and kneeling before him,

  80. she asked him for something.

  81. And he said to her,

  82. What do you want?

  83. She said to him,

  84. Say that these two sons of mine are to sit,

  85. one at your right hand

  86. and one at your left in your kingdom.

  87. Jesus answered,

  88. You do not know what you are asking.

  89. Are you able to drink the cup

  90. that I am to drink?

  91. They said to him,

  92. We are able.

  93. He said to them,

  94. You will drink my cup,

  95. but to sit at my right hand

  96. and at my left is not mine to grant,

  97. but it is for those

  98. for whom it has been prepared by my Father.

  99. And when the ten heard it,

  100. they were indignant at the two brothers.

  101. But Jesus called them to him and said,

  102. You know that the rulers of the Gentiles

  103. lord it over them,

  104. and their great ones exercise authority over them.

  105. It shall not be so among you.

  106. But whoever would be great among you

  107. must be your servant,

  108. and whoever would be first among you

  109. must be your slave.

  110. Even as the Son of Man came,

  111. not to be served,

  112. but to serve,

  113. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  114. And as they went out of Jericho,

  115. a great crowd followed him.

  116. And behold,

  117. there were two blind men

  118. sitting by the roadside,

  119. and when they heard that Jesus was passing by,

  120. they cried out,

  121. Lord, have mercy on us, son of David.

  122. The crowd rebuked them,

  123. telling them to be silent.

  124. But they cried out all the more,

  125. Lord, Lord, have mercy on us, son of David.

  126. And stopping,

  127. Jesus called them and said,

  128. What do you want me to do for you?

  129. They said to him,

  130. Lord, let our eyes be opened.

  131. And Jesus, in pity,

  132. touched their eyes,

  133. and immediately they recovered their sight

  134. and followed him.

  135. Well, we can think of our text this morning

  136. kind of like a sandwich.

  137. Any good sandwich has two parts.

  138. It's got the bread on the outside

  139. and the fixings on the inside.

  140. So we're going to look at this passage

  141. just like we would examine a sandwich.

  142. We're going to first look at the bread.

  143. There's a slice in verses 17 to 19.

  144. And then the other slice is in 29 to 34.

  145. We're going to see specifically

  146. what that has to say about Jesus.

  147. And then we're going to look at the fixings.

  148. We're going to see how,

  149. in light of who he is,

  150. and in light of his character,

  151. and in light of what he's done,

  152. what that calls us to as his people,

  153. and his followers.

  154. So first, the bread.

  155. Here's the main idea

  156. in 17 to 19 and 29 to 34.

  157. Our king, Jesus Christ,

  158. is a suffering servant.

  159. Our king is a suffering servant.

  160. From the outset of Matthew's gospel,

  161. he wants to set the record straight

  162. about this guy.

  163. We see in the very first verse,

  164. Jesus the Christ,

  165. the son of David,

  166. the son of Abraham.

  167. A little bit later,

  168. he's Emmanuel.

  169. He's God with us.

  170. As the story has progressed,

  171. we've seen Jesus' power on display

  172. and miraculous healings

  173. and the exercising of authority

  174. over creation,

  175. calming seas,

  176. healing paralytics,

  177. giving sight to the blind

  178. as we see even in our passage today.

  179. Matthew is asking

  180. and getting us to ask the question,

  181. who is this guy

  182. that is calling us

  183. to follow him?

  184. What's his identity?

  185. What's his character like?

  186. What's his mission

  187. on planet Earth?

  188. Well, his identity, of course,

  189. is the Christ,

  190. the anointed one of God,

  191. the one who is inaugurating

  192. the saving reign of God

  193. throughout all of the world.

  194. His character,

  195. we've seen time and time again

  196. that he's full of compassion.

  197. He's full of mercy.

  198. He reaches out to those in need.

  199. For those who cry for help,

  200. he answers.

  201. In his mission,

  202. we can summarize it as

  203. destination,

  204. Calvary.

  205. He's headed to the cross.

  206. He's on a mission

  207. to die in the place of sinners.

  208. Well, this passage in Matthew

  209. is perhaps the clearest

  210. statements yet

  211. where Jesus' identity

  212. and his compassion

  213. and his mission

  214. sort of align.

  215. And they come together

  216. and Matthew really focuses in

  217. in these verses.

  218. And it's the close proximity

  219. of this identity

  220. and character and mission

  221. that's going to bring clarity

  222. to who this guy is.

  223. So first,

  224. we look at,

  225. there's two titles

  226. that we can see.

  227. The first is in verse 18.

  228. See it there?

  229. The Son of Man.

  230. Right?

  231. And this is Jesus'

  232. self-proclaimed title.

  233. This is how he references himself

  234. time and time again

  235. in Matthew's Gospel.

  236. We see that this comes

  237. from Daniel chapter 7

    Daniel 7:13

  238. verses 13 and 14

  239. where one like the Son of Man

  240. is brought before

  241. the Ancient of Days,

  242. before the throne of God.

  243. And interestingly,

  244. he's given an everlasting dominion,

  245. an indestructible kingdom

  246. that all nations

  247. should come and serve him.

  248. That's the first title,

  249. the Son of Man.

  250. But then also,

  251. if you notice

  252. in verses 30 and 31,

  253. there's a different title,

  254. similar,

  255. but it's on the mouths

  256. and lips of the blind men.

  257. Son of David.

  258. Son of David,

  259. have mercy on us.

  260. Interestingly,

  261. every time that this title

  262. occurs in Matthew's Gospel,

  263. it's in context of healing.

  264. people are imploring Jesus

  265. to heal them,

  266. to relieve their suffering

  267. or their pain

  268. or their physical needs.

  269. And so they call out

  270. Son of David.

  271. Well, this is, of course,

  272. a title that is seen

  273. as the fulfillment

  274. of a prophecy

  275. from 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  276. specifically verse 16

  277. where the prophet Nathan

  278. comes to David

  279. and says,

  280. your offspring

  281. is going to be

  282. on your throne forever.

  283. These blind guys

  284. in our passage

  285. seem to realize

  286. a little bit

  287. of the extent

  288. of what this title means.

  289. Here's the one,

  290. the prophesied king,

  291. the son of David

  292. who would come

  293. and take the throne

  294. forever and ever and ever.

  295. He's the son of man.

  296. He's the son of David.

  297. He's an eternal king.

  298. His kingdom

  299. and his dominion

  300. have no end

  301. and cannot be destroyed.

  302. These titles

  303. in our text

  304. show us

  305. that Jesus

  306. is the legit heir

  307. of King David

  308. and that he is

  309. the divine,

  310. eternal king

  311. who will rule

  312. all people

  313. forever.

  314. forever.

  315. But we don't

  316. just see titles,

  317. right?

  318. We see his character

  319. displayed especially

  320. in verses 29

  321. to 34.

  322. He's on the way

  323. to Jerusalem.

  324. He's already pointed

  325. this out.

  326. He's from the beginning

  327. said,

  328. hey,

  329. I'm going to Jerusalem.

  330. There's all this commotion.

  331. There's all this energy.

  332. It's the time

  333. of the Passover.

  334. So all the Jews

  335. are converging

  336. on this city.

  337. Energy is maxed out

  338. and especially

  339. this time

  340. because the prophet's

  341. coming.

  342. The promised Messiah

  343. is coming.

  344. He's going to

  345. take his throne.

  346. So everybody's

  347. worked up

  348. and excited

  349. and here come

  350. two pesky nobodies

  351. and they start

  352. killing the vibe.

  353. That's how the world

  354. sees them, right?

  355. That's how the crowd

  356. sees these two blind guys.

  357. We see that

  358. from the rebuke.

  359. In verse 31,

  360. they say,

  361. shut up.

  362. King doesn't have

  363. time for you.

  364. He's on the way

  365. to his throne.

  366. Leave him alone.

  367. Get out of here.

  368. He has no time

  369. for these blind men,

  370. doesn't he?

  371. Thankfully,

  372. the crowd's there

  373. to help him out, right?

  374. They rebuke him

  375. for begging.

  376. King has more

  377. important duties.

  378. Just keep quiet here.

  379. Well,

  380. thank God

  381. that Jesus

  382. does not respond

  383. to these two blind men

  384. the way that

  385. the crowds do.

  386. See in verse 32,

  387. stop it.

  388. He takes time

  389. out of this procession

  390. that's all about him.

  391. It's all about

  392. his movement

  393. towards Jerusalem,

  394. his kingly arrival.

  395. He stops.

  396. He calls them

  397. and he says,

  398. what would you like

  399. me to do for you?

  400. He listens

  401. to their request

  402. and notice

  403. in verse 34,

  404. he has pity

  405. on them,

  406. compassion,

  407. mercy.

  408. He stops

  409. the procession

  410. that's all about

  411. him to serve

  412. two guys

  413. that everybody

  414. in that crowd

  415. has deemed

  416. to be no one,

  417. of no consequence,

  418. of no value

  419. to the king

  420. and yet the king

  421. stops and serves them.

  422. He heals them.

  423. He gives them sight.

  424. Merciful power

  425. on display.

  426. It's amazing.

  427. Jesus is eager

  428. and able

  429. to stop

  430. what he's doing

  431. to care for

  432. these two men.

  433. Friends,

  434. you and I

  435. are never,

  436. ever,

  437. ever going to meet

  438. anyone as consistently

  439. compassionate

  440. as King Jesus.

  441. He's amazing.

  442. He has time

  443. for even the little guy.

  444. He's a merciful king.

  445. But this king,

  446. the son of man,

  447. the son of David

  448. who has compassion,

  449. he's on a mission.

  450. Right?

  451. We jump back

  452. to that first slice

  453. of bread now,

  454. verses 17 to 19.

  455. We see what

  456. that mission is.

  457. Destination,

  458. Calvary.

  459. He's got a one-way ticket

  460. to suffer and die

  461. on the cross.

  462. This king,

  463. the son of man

  464. who gives mercy

  465. to blind guys,

  466. will be delivered

  467. to the high priests

  468. and scribes,

  469. verse 18.

  470. They will condemn

  471. him to death.

  472. They will hand him

  473. over to pagans

  474. because these Jewish

  475. rulers don't have

  476. the authority

  477. themselves

  478. to put Jesus

  479. to death.

  480. So they'll

  481. bypass that

  482. by handing him

  483. over to the Romans

  484. where he will be

  485. mocked

  486. and flogged

  487. and crucified.

  488. Well,

  489. what happened,

  490. you may ask,

  491. to the throne

  492. of glory

  493. and the throngs

  494. of angels

  495. that he's been

  496. talking about

  497. upon his return?

  498. We see as recently

  499. as chapter 19,

  500. verse 28.

  501. Jesus says,

  502. Truly I say to you

  503. in the new world,

  504. when the son of man

  505. will sit on his

  506. glorious throne,

  507. he's coming into

  508. a kingdom,

  509. and yet now he's

  510. talking about

  511. suffering and a

  512. brutal death

  513. on a cross,

  514. condemned to die

  515. as a criminal.

  516. Well, right,

  517. there's a reason

  518. that this is now

  519. the third prediction

  520. of Jesus' death

  521. in Matthew's gospel.

  522. how hard it is

  523. for our human

  524. thinking

  525. to see

  526. and conceive

  527. of suffering

  528. and crucifixion

  529. as the pathway

  530. to the throne.

  531. It's folly

  532. to us

  533. unless God

  534. gives us

  535. ears to hear

  536. and eyes

  537. to see.

  538. We're never

  539. going to grasp it

  540. apart from

  541. his grace.

  542. It's a despised

  543. and rejected

  544. notion.

  545. One that the world

  546. stumbles upon

  547. over and over.

  548. I will not

  549. bend the knee

  550. to a crucified

  551. Messiah.

  552. But it's the path

  553. our king traveled.

  554. Jesus' mission

  555. ended in a death

  556. deserved

  557. by criminals,

  558. not by the innocent

  559. lamb of God.

  560. it's not because

  561. of his guilt

  562. but because of ours.

  563. The sin of the world

  564. took him

  565. on that mission.

  566. A mission

  567. of sacrifice

  568. and ultimate

  569. suffering.

  570. A unique

  571. and lonely

  572. mission.

  573. Our king

  574. is a suffering

  575. servant.

  576. Matthew

  577. has brought

  578. this identity

  579. and this

  580. character

  581. and this

  582. mission

  583. together

  584. to speak

  585. of the guy

  586. who you and I

  587. follow.

  588. Who is this guy?

  589. He's our king.

  590. He suffered

  591. for us.

  592. His path

  593. of sacrificial

  594. service

  595. brings us

  596. life.

  597. He is the one

  598. we orient

  599. our lives around

  600. and we gladly

  601. worship.

  602. He's the suffering

  603. servant king

  604. who reaches out

  605. to us in mercy.

  606. That's who he is.

  607. But he also

  608. calls us

  609. to follow

  610. in his footsteps

  611. right?

  612. Matthew doesn't

  613. just tell us

  614. this stuff

  615. about Jesus

  616. so we can go

  617. yep that's

  618. who he is

  619. but so that

  620. we would follow

  621. him.

  622. That we would

  623. obey him.

  624. So we got to

  625. look at the fixings

  626. now of our

  627. sandwich.

  628. Verses 20

  629. to 28.

  630. to calling us

  631. to embrace

  632. a different

  633. pathway to

  634. greatness.

  635. Not calling us

  636. to reject

  637. greatness as

  638. some

  639. substandard

  640. sort of

  641. worldly thing

  642. but to

  643. reorient

  644. our minds

  645. around how

  646. God defines

  647. greatness.

  648. And to spend

  649. all of our

  650. days seeking

  651. that which

  652. God says is

  653. truly great.

  654. Servanthood.

  655. verses 20

  656. to 28 can be

  657. summed up

  658. in this point.

  659. For the

  660. Christian

  661. servanthood

  662. is the true

  663. measure of

  664. greatness.

  665. For you and

  666. I if we

  667. follow Jesus

  668. faithfully and

  669. obediently

  670. then we define

  671. our greatness

  672. by serving

  673. other people.

  674. So we

  675. remember the

  676. context as we

  677. get into these

  678. verses into our

  679. sandwich fixings.

  680. In verse 28

  681. Jesus has told

  682. his 12

  683. disciples

  684. verse 28 of

  685. chapter 19

  686. excuse me

  687. he's told his

  688. disciples that he's

  689. coming to sit on a

  690. throne of glory

  691. and these 12

  692. original guys who

  693. have been with

  694. him first

  695. from the

  696. beginning

  697. are going to

  698. get 12

  699. thrones too.

  700. That's a pretty

  701. good deal for

  702. James and John

  703. and Andrew and

  704. Peter and the

  705. rest of them.

  706. But what we

  707. see immediately

  708. in verses 20

  709. to 28

  710. right up front

  711. is there's

  712. another blindness

  713. at work in our

  714. passage.

  715. Not a physical

  716. blindness that

  717. causes these guys

  718. to cry out for

  719. mercy but a

  720. blind ambition

  721. that causes the

  722. disciples to

  723. seek glory and

  724. honor and

  725. recognition.

  726. Unfortunately this

  727. blind ambition has

  728. caused quite the

  729. selective hearing

  730. children for

  731. James and John

  732. the sons of

  733. Zebedee.

  734. They get their

  735. mom to come

  736. ask Jesus a

  737. question.

  738. They're so

  739. fixated on

  740. these seats of

  741. power and

  742. influence that

  743. the best way I

  744. can describe them

  745. is like that

  746. cartoon wolf

  747. right who's so

  748. hungry that he

  749. sees every sheep

  750. not as a sheep

  751. but like a steak

  752. on a plate.

  753. That's how they

  754. are with his

  755. glory.

  756. That's how they

  757. are with the

  758. honor.

  759. They're like that

  760. wolf that just

  761. looks out over the

  762. flock of sheep and

  763. goes steak,

  764. lamb chops,

  765. pot roast.

  766. They're blinded to

  767. what they're even

  768. asking.

  769. And it's amazing

  770. right?

  771. It's amazing that

  772. so close to

  773. Jesus telling

  774. them what his

  775. mission was going

  776. to be and why

  777. he was nearly at

  778. Jerusalem.

  779. Jericho, a day's

  780. walk.

  781. He's almost

  782. there.

  783. He's almost

  784. there.

  785. And in

  786. earshot of that

  787. and in complete

  788. abandonment of

  789. what Jesus has

  790. just said, these

  791. two sons and

  792. their mom come

  793. up.

  794. They want their

  795. glory and they

  796. want Jesus to

  797. secure it for

  798. them.

  799. Now it makes

  800. sense maybe that

  801. James and John

  802. would do this,

  803. right?

  804. They're two of the

  805. first disciples

  806. chosen.

  807. Peter and Andrew

  808. first and second,

  809. James and John

  810. third and fourth.

  811. They must be super

  812. important, right?

  813. They've been there

  814. from the beginning

  815. and they've walked

  816. with Jesus.

  817. They've helped him

  818. out on his mission.

  819. He sent them out

  820. and they've probably

  821. even maybe cast out

  822. some demons

  823. themselves.

  824. These two guys

  825. were on the

  826. mountain when Jesus

  827. was transfigured

  828. before them.

  829. Moses and Elijah

  830. showed up.

  831. They're kind of a

  832. big deal.

  833. Plus their mommy

  834. thinks they're the

  835. best two sons in

  836. the world.

  837. Well she starts

  838. out somewhat

  839. okay, right?

  840. She goes low.

  841. She takes this

  842. humble position,

  843. at least body

  844. position, but of

  845. course we can see

  846. through that humble

  847. knee bending

  848. posture because

  849. this request

  850. comes from a

  851. heart full of

  852. pride.

  853. In fact, it

  854. comes from three

  855. hearts full of

  856. pride.

  857. We see that in

  858. verse 22 when

  859. Jesus answers the

  860. request of the

  861. mom with a

  862. address directed

  863. at James and

  864. John.

  865. You too do not

  866. know what you are

  867. asking.

  868. And they said to

  869. him, we are

  870. able.

  871. Three arrogant

  872. hearts wanting a

  873. position of power

  874. and prominence in

  875. the kingdom.

  876. She wants her sons

  877. to have the top

  878. spots.

  879. Humbly at least

  880. she lets Jesus

  881. decide which sits on

  882. which side, right?

  883. Well at least,

  884. Jesus, you can figure

  885. that one out.

  886. But here's what

  887. this request is.

  888. It's an audacious,

  889. self-centered,

  890. heartless display of

  891. pride.

  892. Jesus has just

  893. told them about the

  894. horrific fate that

  895. awaits him in

  896. Jerusalem.

  897. And these two are

  898. only concerned about

  899. where they sit in

  900. glory.

  901. But we're not

  902. surprised at this

  903. point in the

  904. gospel, are we?

  905. Because time and

  906. time again, we've

  907. seen the disciples

  908. stumbling over this

  909. same way of

  910. thinking.

  911. Peter confesses

  912. Jesus as the

  913. Messiah, the

  914. Christ, the Holy

  915. One of God.

  916. And then immediately

  917. Jesus says, yeah, I'm

  918. going to Jerusalem and

  919. I'm going to suffer

  920. and die.

  921. And then Peter goes,

  922. no way, Jose, not

  923. you.

  924. To which Jesus

  925. says, get behind

  926. me, Satan.

  927. You're setting your

  928. mind on things of

  929. men, not things of

  930. God.

  931. chapter 18, verse

  932. 1, Billy preached

  933. on this.

  934. They want to know

  935. who's the greatest in

  936. the kingdom of

  937. heaven.

  938. They're sitting there

  939. when Jesus is kind of

  940. maybe just out of

  941. earshot going, man,

  942. how do we get great?

  943. How do we get Jesus

  944. to say, you're great?

  945. And so they ask

  946. Jesus, well, how do

  947. we become great in

  948. your eyes?

  949. He says, well, hold

  950. on, folks.

  951. Unless you turn and

  952. humble yourself like a

  953. child, you're not

  954. even going to get in

  955. my kingdom.

  956. Whoa.

  957. And then we see

  958. these same disciples

  959. rebuking people for

  960. bringing kids to be

  961. near Jesus.

  962. You don't have time

  963. for them, little guys.

  964. Get them out of here.

  965. Just like the crowd

  966. rebukes these blind

  967. guys in our text.

  968. Well, friends, it's

  969. easy for us to look

  970. on the disciples'

  971. folly as if through

  972. pharisaical eyes.

  973. We sit back kind of

  974. arms folded, jeering

  975. and scoffing at their

  976. pride and their

  977. arrogance.

  978. But we in our human

  979. nature are exactly the

  980. same.

  981. we all want the

  982. celebrity.

  983. We all want the

  984. glory.

  985. We all want the

  986. mountaintop experience

  987. of everybody just

  988. celebrating us and

  989. patting us on the back

  990. and telling us how

  991. wonderful we are.

  992. And we all tend to be

  993. blind to the road that

  994. must be traveled to

  995. true greatness.

  996. But the disciple

  997. remembers.

  998. The one intent on

  999. following Jesus

  1000. remembers that it's a

  1001. narrow gate and a

  1002. hard road.

  1003. They're so enamored by

  1004. glory, like the

  1005. cartoon wolf is

  1006. enamored by lamb

  1007. chops, that they

  1008. don't hear about the

  1009. path required to be

  1010. followed.

  1011. Jesus has already told

  1012. his followers in this

  1013. gospel that you'll be

  1014. hated by the world,

  1015. that you're going out

  1016. as sheep among wolves.

  1017. And then in chapter

  1018. 16 he issues the

  1019. most fatal blow to

  1020. self imaginable.

  1021. If you would come

  1022. after me, you must

  1023. deny yourself.

1024. You must put self in

1025. the grave and pick up

1026. a cross of suffering and

  1027. follow me.

  1028. Self is not only

1029. merely a threat to our

  1030. position in the kingdom

  1031. of God.

1032. Self is a threat to

  1033. entering the kingdom

1034. of God and we must

  1035. slay all notions of

  1036. self as followers of

  1037. Jesus.

1038. We must see our own

  1039. tendency to grasp for

  1040. positions of power and

  1041. prestige in the

  1042. disciples' request or

  1043. else we're missing the

  1044. point for us today.

  1045. Amazingly in verse 22

  1046. Jesus responds kindly

  1047. it seems.

1048. He doesn't kick him in

1049. the shins and shoo him

  1050. away.

1051. But even in his kind

  1052. response they're still

  1053. clueless.

  1054. They're still blinded by

  1055. their ambition and

  1056. thoughts of glory.

1057. But Jesus says you don't

1058. know what you are asking.

  1059. following.

  1060. Followed by are you

1061. able to drink the cup I

  1062. am about to drink?

1063. Well we know this cup.

  1064. It's a cup of suffering.

  1065. It's a cup of being

  1066. mocked and flogged and

  1067. crucified by Gentile

  1068. rulers.

  1069. Hated by everybody it

  1070. seems.

1071. But James and John as

  1072. one commentator puts it

1073. they don't see this cup

1074. as a cup of suffering.

  1075. They think it's a golden

  1076. goblet of glory and

  1077. power.

1078. They think the cup is

  1079. exactly what they're

  1080. after.

1081. The Messiah is coming to

  1082. town.

1083. This cup is one of glory

  1084. and prestige and honor

  1085. and fame.

1086. Jesus says you have no

  1087. idea what you're talking

  1088. about.

1089. If you had heard my

  1090. words just in the

  1091. previous three verses

  1092. you would know.

  1093. But you've been blinded

  1094. by your ambition.

  1095. It's a cup of suffering

  1096. that Jesus offers to

  1097. anyone who would follow

  1098. him.

1099. That's how he explains it

1100. to James and John and

1101. that's how he explains it

  1102. to you and I.

  1103. They'll truly suffer even

1104. though at the moment they

  1105. don't recognize that that's

1106. what Jesus is getting at.

  1107. church history says James

  1108. was martyred, John was

1109. exiled, died on an island

  1110. probably mostly alone.

1111. But alas, even though they

1112. will get the suffering, they

1113. will end up on thrones, it's

1114. only the Father who grants

  1115. these seats of honor.

1116. Jesus himself does not even

1117. have the authority to do

  1118. that.

1119. Well, at this point in our

1120. story, the disciples pop back

1121. up on our radar in verse 24

1122. and we see how seethingly angry

1123. they are at James and John

  1124. for this request.

1125. They've been kind of listening

  1126. and judging and condemning

  1127. from the background.

1128. To be clear, they're not mad

  1129. for self-denying kingdom-seeking

  1130. priorities.

1131. They're mad because they want

  1132. the honor for themselves.

1133. And James and John thought of

  1134. the idea first.

1135. James and John are creeping in

1136. on the other ten's turf

1137. and they're mad about it.

1138. What a great teaching moment

  1139. for Jesus.

  1140. To reorient his disciples

  1141. around what truly matters.

1142. And in a culture like ours

  1143. that exalts good looks

  1144. and money and cars

  1145. and power and influence,

  1146. celebrity,

1147. in a culture who makes TV shows

1148. called the Lifestyles of the

  1149. Rich and Famous,

1150. in a culture that defines

  1151. popularity and status

1152. by how many friends one has

1153. on Facebook and how many

  1154. Instagram followers one might

  1155. have,

1156. that thinks great things of

1157. those who make platinum records

  1158. and win Grammys.

1159. These are some of the most

  1160. important words

  1161. we could ever hear

  1162. Jesus say to us

  1163. as his followers.

1164. He's speaking to us too.

  1165. Look at him again.

  1166. Verses 25 to 28.

1167. Jesus calls all of his

  1168. twelve together

  1169. and says,

1170. you know that the rulers

  1171. of the Gentiles,

  1172. by Gentiles he means

  1173. the pagans,

  1174. the godless.

1175. You know that the godless

1176. rulers lord it over them

  1177. and their great ones

  1178. exercise authority

  1179. over them.

1180. It shall not be so

  1181. among you.

1182. Not if you're going to be

  1183. in my kingdom.

1184. Not if you want greatness

  1185. as part of

  1186. my community.

  1187. But whoever

1188. would be great among you

  1189. must be your servant.

  1190. And whoever

1191. would be first among you

  1192. must be your slave.

  1193. And then here's why.

  1194. Even as

  1195. the son of man

1196. came not to be served

  1197. but to serve

1198. and to give his life

  1199. as a ransom

  1200. for many.

  1201. Pagan leaders,

  1202. godless men

  1203. have the power

  1204. and exert the authority

  1205. and push their weight

  1206. around.

1207. Those great in the kingdom

  1208. are servants

  1209. and slaves.

  1210. The world says

  1211. blessed are the powerful.

  1212. Jesus says

  1213. blessed are the meek.

  1214. The world praises

  1215. the go-getters,

  1216. the hard chargers,

  1217. the ladder climbers.

  1218. Jesus says

  1219. to be great

1220. you must be a servant.

  1221. It doesn't mean

  1222. that we

  1223. reject the notions

  1224. of career advancement

  1225. or anything

  1226. of that nature

  1227. but it does

1228. reframe how we see it

1229. and how we pursue it.

  1230. Humble heart

  1231. does not seek

  1232. promotions,

  1233. church offices,

  1234. things of that nature

  1235. in order to feel

  1236. more important.

  1237. in order to exert

  1238. more authority.

  1239. That's pagan thinking.

1240. It's to be cut out

  1241. of the heart

  1242. and mind

  1243. and life

  1244. of the disciple,

  1245. the one who follows

  1246. the suffering king.

  1247. A humble heart

  1248. does not despise

  1249. any opportunity

  1250. to serve.

  1251. There's no task

  1252. beneath the servant,

1253. the one who is great

  1254. in the kingdom's eyes.

  1255. As kingdom citizens,

  1256. those of greatest status,

  1257. those that God

  1258. looks upon

  1259. with particular gladness,

  1260. are those who have

  1261. glad hearts

  1262. eager to contribute

  1263. to the mission.

  1264. Pride and self,

  1265. they seek importance,

  1266. glory,

  1267. opportunities

  1268. to exert authority

  1269. and power

  1270. over others.

  1271. Humble servants

1272. seek to build others up,

  1273. to consider the interests

  1274. of others

  1275. as more significant

  1276. than their own.

  1277. Do you aspire

  1278. to be great,

  1279. Christian?

  1280. Then adopt the heart

  1281. and mind

  1282. and lifestyle

  1283. of a servant.

  1284. None of us

  1285. are that important.

  1286. But Jesus says

  1287. we can be great,

1288. great in the kingdom's eyes,

  1289. but only through servanthood.

  1290. Let's remember

  1291. one last time

  1292. what that type

  1293. of service entails,

  1294. right?

1295. It's in the same vein

  1296. as our crucified,

  1297. suffering king.

  1298. It's a cup of suffering,

  1299. sacrifice,

  1300. self-denial.

  1301. That's kingdom greatness.

  1302. That's what Jesus

  1303. puts his finger on

  1304. in this passage.

  1305. Notice,

  1306. again,

  1307. who it is

  1308. that's calling us

  1309. to it.

  1310. It's the one

  1311. who gave his life

  1312. as a ransom

  1313. for many.

  1314. Verse 28.

  1315. He didn't come

  1316. to be served.

  1317. He's not looking

  1318. to have palm fronds

  1319. waved over him

1320. in the hot summer days,

  1321. grapes fed to him.

1322. He comes as a servant,

  1323. one who suffers

  1324. and dies for us.

  1325. He calls the shots

  1326. about how we now

  1327. live our lives.

  1328. See what God's saying

  1329. in this text?

  1330. Servanthood

  1331. must be your measure,

  1332. Christian,

  1333. of true greatness

  1334. because King Jesus

  1335. became a suffering servant

  1336. for you.

  1337. Servanthood

  1338. must be your measure

  1339. for greatness

  1340. because King Jesus

  1341. became a suffering servant

  1342. for you.

1343. The one who calls us

  1344. to self-denying

  1345. sacrificial service

  1346. is the one

  1347. who emptied himself.

  1348. Emptied himself

  1349. by becoming obedient

1350. to the point of death,

1351. even death on a cross.

  1352. His servanthood

  1353. ransomed you and I

  1354. out of darkness

1355. and into his marvelous light

  1356. and calls you

  1357. and me

  1358. as Christians

  1359. to esteem servanthood

  1360. above all.

1361. You want to be great?

  1362. Serve.

  1363. Servanthood

  1364. must be

  1365. our measure

  1366. of greatness

  1367. because Jesus

  1368. suffered

  1369. in service

  1370. to us.

  1371. So as we close,

  1372. let me just offer

  1373. a self-diagnostic

  1374. for us

  1375. as we

  1376. examine our own hearts

  1377. and the ways that

  1378. self

  1379. is competing

  1380. with servanthood.

  1381. and then I want

  1382. to speak to two

  1383. groups of people

  1384. in particular.

  1385. First is self-diagnostic.

  1386. Speaking to me too.

  1387. Servants

  1388. don't get upset

  1389. at dirty dishes.

  1390. They clean them.

  1391. Servants

  1392. don't see

  1393. certain tasks

  1394. as beneath them.

  1395. They link arms

  1396. and they do it.

  1397. Servants

  1398. don't

  1399. gauge

  1400. their time

  1401. to be more

  1402. valuable

  1403. than that

  1404. of other

  1405. people's.

  1406. They put

  1407. others

  1408. before themselves.

  1409. Friend,

  1410. would you

  1411. ask God

  1412. today

  1413. to show you

  1414. the areas

  1415. of your life

  1416. in which

  1417. your heart,

  1418. mind,

  1419. and lifestyle

  1420. resemble

  1421. much closer

  1422. to the pagan

  1423. Gentile rulers

  1424. than that

  1425. of a disciple

  1426. of Jesus?

  1427. would you

  1428. ask him

  1429. for the grace

  1430. to change?

  1431. I think

  1432. we're all

  1433. in that boat

  1434. in different

  1435. ways.

  1436. Examine

  1437. your heart

  1438. and your life.

  1439. In closing,

  1440. two groups.

  1441. I want

  1442. to speak

  1443. to husbands

  1444. and I want

  1445. to speak

  1446. to leaders.

  1447. First,

  1448. husbands.

  1449. I'm going

  1450. to venture

  1451. a guess

  1452. that for

  1453. each of us

  1454. in this room

  1455. who's married,

  1456. there are

  1457. patterns of

  1458. thinking

  1459. and acting

  1460. that exhibit

  1461. self rather

  1462. than servanthood,

  1463. that exhibit

  1464. pride,

  1465. not humility.

  1466. Christ

  1467. calls us

  1468. to service

  1469. at the expense

  1470. of self.

  1471. After all,

  1472. Jesus gave

  1473. his life

  1474. for the church,

  1475. Ephesians 5.

  1476. You don't boss,

  1477. you don't get grumpy,

  1478. you sacrifice,

  1479. you serve.

  1480. leaders.

  1481. Those holding

  1482. offices here

  1483. at the church,

  1484. elders and

  1485. deacons and

  1486. pastors,

  1487. life group

  1488. leaders,

  1489. Sunday school

  1490. teachers,

  1491. event organizers,

  1492. beware of the

  1493. feeling of

  1494. self-importance,

  1495. the feeling

  1496. that you're

  1497. irreplaceable.

  1498. Beware of the

  1499. temptation to

  1500. despise a

  1501. fellow Christian

  1502. from prideful

  1503. notions of

  1504. superiority.

  1505. Make no

  1506. mistake that

  1507. your value,

  1508. it's not in

  1509. how much

  1510. authority and

  1511. influence you

  1512. exert,

  1513. but it's linked

  1514. to your

  1515. willingness to

  1516. serve.

  1517. It's linked

  1518. to a heart

  1519. posture that

  1520. says,

  1521. I'll give of

  1522. myself for the

  1523. sake of God

  1524. and his kingdom

  1525. and his people.

  1526. In the end,

  1527. self-promotion

  1528. will profit you

  1529. nothing.

  1530. self-denying

  1531. service is

  1532. everything.

  1533. Our text

  1534. today calls

  1535. us to

  1536. something

  1537. challenging

  1538. and above

  1539. each and

  1540. every one

  1541. of us.

  1542. And yet,

  1543. the good

  1544. news is

  1545. God gives

  1546. grace.

  1547. God does

  1548. not call us

  1549. to something

  1550. that he is

  1551. not already

  1552. determined to

  1553. see brought

  1554. about in the

  1555. hearts and

  1556. lives of his

  1557. people because

  1558. the suffering

  1559. servant is

  1560. reorienting and

  1561. establishing a

  1562. community of

  1563. people that

  1564. follow him,

  1565. even to death,

  1566. follow him in

  1567. sacrifice and

  1568. humility and

  1569. service to one

  1570. another and to

  1571. the world.

  1572. It's what Jesus

  1573. has called us

  1574. to.

  1575. He's called us

  1576. to value

  1577. servanthood above

  1578. all things in

  1579. this life.

  1580. life.

  1581. It must be how

  1582. we as

  1583. Christians define

  1584. and measure

  1585. greatness because

  1586. we follow a

  1587. king who

  1588. suffered and

  1589. sacrificed himself

  1590. for us.

  1591. Jesus served

  1592. us all the way

  1593. to the cross.

  1594. So we serve

  1595. others in his

  1596. footsteps.

  1597. Let's pray.

  1598. Father God,

  1599. we thank and

  1600. praise you that

  1601. the community

  1602. of people you

  1603. are creating

  1604. is not one

  1605. that looks like

  1606. the world,

  1607. but one of

  1608. service and

  1609. humility.

  1610. God, I pray

  1611. for all of us

  1612. that you would

  1613. help our hearts

  1614. and our minds

  1615. and our lives

  1616. resemble that

  1617. of our servant

  1618. king, the one

  1619. who suffered

  1620. and died for

  1621. us.

  1622. In the state

  1623. of this, would

  1624. you give grace?

  1625. We ask it in

  1626. Jesus' name.

  1627. Amen.
