  1. Well, good morning. Will you turn in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 21?

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  2. If you're using the paperback, yeah, the children are dismissed.

  3. If you're using the paperback Pew Bible, it's page 916.

  4. And we're going to work through a story this morning that is often called the triumphal entry,

  5. but I think a better title might be the not-so-triumphal entry,

  6. because as we'll see, it isn't really that triumphant at all.

  7. It's actually a bit of a letdown.

  8. We're in the middle of a series on the book of Matthew,

  9. and I'm really grateful to continue with the series this morning.

  10. Last week, Matt Sear led us through the rest of chapter 20, and today we're in chapter 21.

  11. Let's do this. We'll start by reading the story, verses 1 through 11,

  12. and then we'll go back and take a look at it more closely.

  13. It says in 21, verse 1,

  14. Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives,

  15. then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,

  16. Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her.

  17. Untie them and bring them to me.

  18. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say,

  19. The Lord needs them, and he will send them at once.

  20. This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

  21. Say to the daughter of Zion,

  22. Behold, your king is coming to you,

  23. humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt,

  24. the foal of a beast of burden.

  25. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

  26. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks,

  27. and he sat on them.

  28. Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road,

  29. and others cut branches from trees and spread them on the road.

  30. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting,

  31. Hosanna to the son of David!

  32. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

  33. Hosanna in the highest!

  34. And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up,

  35. saying, Who is this?

  36. And the crowd said,

  37. This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee.

  38. You know, it seems like in this country we're facing elections all the time.

  39. As soon as we're done with one election cycle,

  40. then we have a new election cycle coming on,

  41. and with all those pesky radio and television election commercials.

  42. And the question always is,

  43. Who should we accept as our leader?

  44. And the answer to that question depends on how we diagnose the problems.

  45. Who we want to fix the problems depends on what we think the problems are.

  46. And in this chapter, the question is,

  47. Should we accept Jesus or not?

  48. Is he going to be solving the problems that we think he should be solving?

  49. The passage comes at a critical point in the book of Matthew.

  50. The first 20 chapters of the book of Matthew,

  51. from chapter 1 to chapter 20,

  52. cover 33 years of time.

  53. Jesus' miraculous birth,

  54. his baptism,

  55. his teaching,

  56. and his parables,

  57. and his miracles.

  58. He has announced that he is going to be killed

  59. and raised to life again.

  60. And his disciples aren't so sure what they think about that,

  61. but they're willing to go along with it.

  62. And then he turns his face toward Jerusalem.

  63. He's up in Galilee,

  64. up in the north,

  65. and he turns toward Jerusalem.

  66. Jerusalem is the cultural and political

  67. and religious capital of the nations.

  68. And the Jewish leaders

  69. who have been coming up to Galilee

  70. to test him

  71. and to resist him

  72. and to try and

  73. cause trouble for him

  74. have come from Jerusalem.

  75. And when Jesus says

  76. that he's going to Jerusalem,

  77. his disciples say,

  78. What?

  79. That's where the Jews are

  80. who are trying to kill you.

  81. We're going there.

  82. And Jesus says,

  83. We're going there.

  84. Because his whole life

  85. and his whole ministry

  86. have been directed to this moment.

  87. When he comes to Jerusalem

  88. to accomplish the task

  89. that the Father has for him.

  90. And at this point,

  91. once he arrives in Jerusalem,

  92. Matthew begins to slow down

  93. to get into more detail,

  94. and he starts to cover

  95. less time with more chapters.

  96. At this point,

  97. from chapter 21 to chapter 28,

  98. from the time Jesus enters Jerusalem

  99. until he rises from the dead,

  100. it only covers one week of time.

  101. Because this is the climax

  102. of the book of Matthew.

  103. And this is the climax, in fact,

  104. of all of the Bible

  105. and all of world history.

  106. This is the point

  107. upon which everything turns.

  108. Every person, every kingdom,

  109. every event that the world

  110. has ever known,

  111. this is Jesus in Jerusalem.

  112. So let's look at this story.

  113. It seems like a simple story at first,

  114. but there's a lot going on here.

  115. Look back at verse 1.

  116. It says,

  117. When they drew near to Jerusalem

  118. and came to Bethphage,

  119. to the Mount of Olives,

  120. then Jesus sent two disciples.

  121. See, they've made their way

  122. down from Galilee.

  123. It's been a long distance

  124. over many, many days of walking.

  125. He stopped along the way

  126. to teach and to do some miracles.

  127. And they've come

  128. to the outskirts of Jerusalem

  129. to a series of these small villages.

  130. There in Bethphage,

  131. nearby is Bethany,

  132. where he raised Lazarus from the dead.

  133. Jerusalem is up in the hill country,

  134. and it's surrounded on three sides

  135. by deep valleys.

  136. And then on the other side

  137. of those valleys are hills.

  138. And on the east side of Jerusalem

  139. is the Mount of Olives.

  140. And up on the Mount of Olives

  141. is this little village

  142. that Jesus and his followers

  143. were coming to

  144. as they made their way

  145. to Bethlehem.

  146. As they come to the outskirts

  147. of that little village,

  148. Jesus tells his disciples,

  149. okay, in verse 2,

  150. okay, go into the village

  151. in front of you,

  152. and immediately you will find

  153. a donkey tied and a colt with her.

  154. Untie them and bring them to me.

  155. So he gives his disciples

  156. some very specific instructions.

  157. And he says in verse 3,

  158. if anyone says anything to you,

  159. you shall say the Lord needs them

  160. and he will send them at once.

  161. Here's our first little stop

  162. where we think,

  163. well, this is a little bit odd

  164. because a donkey was worth

  165. a lot of money.

  166. This would be a little bit like

  167. Jesus saying to one of his disciples,

  168. go into Kenosha

  169. and at the pick and save,

  170. you will see a BMW parked there,

  171. bring it to me.

  172. And if the owner is there

  173. standing by his car,

  174. then you just simply say

  175. to the owner,

  176. Jesus needs this

  177. and he'll hand you the keys.

  178. And the disciples say,

  179. well, a BMW costs,

  180. you know, maybe $40,000.

  181. And Jesus will be like,

  182. that's okay,

  183. he'll send it along.

  184. So Matthew doesn't tell us

  185. how this worked.

  186. He doesn't tell us

  187. if this was a miracle

  188. and Jesus knew

  189. that the donkeys would be there

  190. and he's miraculously

  191. causing the guy

  192. to just give up

  193. not only one donkey

  194. but two

  195. just simply by being asked for it

  196. or if Jesus had set this up

  197. in advance somehow

  198. and arranged this in advance.

  199. We're just not told by that

  200. but we know that Jesus

  201. is being very specific

  202. about what he has in mind here.

  203. The point is

  204. that Jesus is not just tired

  205. and he's walking along

  206. and oh, there's a donkey

  207. by the side of the road.

  208. I think I'll just hop on that

  209. for a little while.

  210. He's doing something

  211. very intentional here.

  212. There are these animals

  213. and he is causing his disciples

  214. to go and get them.

  215. Now another reason

  216. that this is unusual

  217. is because this is the only time

  218. in the entire book of Matthew

  219. or any of the gospels

  220. where Jesus rides on an animal.

  221. He walked everywhere

  222. or if he was up

  223. at the Sea of Galilee

  224. he rode a boat.

  225. In fact, he had walked

  226. from Galilee

  227. to these villages

  228. outside of Jerusalem

  229. 100 miles

  230. all the way down there

  231. and now he only has

  232. one mile to go.

  233. So if he has already

  234. walked 100 miles

  235. why does he need a donkey

  236. for just that last mile?

  237. That seems strange.

  238. And in fact,

  239. it's even stranger than that

  240. because we're so familiar

  241. with this story

  242. that we don't often

  243. think about this

  244. but everyone else

  245. would have been walking

  246. into Jerusalem.

  247. In fact,

  248. there was a Jewish tradition

  249. that if you were a pilgrim

  250. coming to Jerusalem

  251. for one of the feast days

  252. you were supposed to walk

  253. and not ride on an animal.

  254. So all of the rest

  255. of the crowd,

  256. all of these pilgrims

  257. coming from different parts

  258. of Israel

  259. would have been coming

  260. to Jerusalem

  261. and they all would have

  262. been walking

  263. and here would be Jesus

  264. the only one

  265. sitting on a donkey

  266. riding into the city.

  267. Talk about drawing

  268. attention to yourself.

  269. And then,

  270. as his disciples had said,

  271. Jerusalem was not

  272. the safest place for him.

  273. Jerusalem was where

  274. everyone was looking

  275. for him to try and kill him.

  276. So instead of Jesus

  277. and his disciples

  278. just sort of blending

  279. in with the crowd,

  280. pulling their hood

  281. over their face

  282. and sort of keeping

  283. their heads down

  284. and going into the city

  285. that way,

  286. instead Jesus props

  287. himself up on a donkey.

  288. He's the only one

  289. and here he comes.

  290. Talk about conspicuous.

  291. He's intentionally

  292. drawing people's focus

  293. to himself.

  294. Now in verse 4,

  295. Matthew tells us

  296. that Jesus is doing

  297. this as a symbol

  298. to make a claim

  299. about himself

  300. in fulfillment

  301. of Old Testament prophecy.

  302. He doesn't ride

  303. a donkey

  304. because he's tired

  305. of walking.

  306. He rides a donkey

  307. because he is making

  308. a claim about himself

  309. through the symbolism

  310. that most Jews

  311. who knew their Bibles

  312. would have instantly

  313. recognized.

  314. And we may not know

  315. the significance

  316. of riding a donkey

  317. into Jerusalem,

  318. so Matthew helps us

  319. out a little bit

  320. and in verse 5,

  321. he quotes from the

  322. Old Testament prophecy

  323. that Jesus is triggering here.

  324. He says in verse 5,

  325. Say to the daughter

  326. of Zion,

  327. Behold,

  328. your king is coming

  329. to you humble

  330. and mounted on a donkey,

  331. on a colt,

  332. full of a beast of burden.

  333. That comes from

  334. the book of Zechariah,

    Zechariah 9:9

  335. chapter 9,

  336. verse 9.

  337. And Matthew says

  338. in verse 4

  339. that this was to fulfill

  340. fulfill what had been said

  341. by the prophet.

  342. The prophet Zechariah

  343. had predicted

  344. that Jerusalem's king

  345. would come into Jerusalem

  346. riding on a donkey

  347. and now Jesus is riding

  348. into town on a donkey

  349. to fulfill that prediction,

  350. to realize what Zechariah

  351. had foretold

  352. some 500 years before.

  353. Would you turn in your Bibles

  354. to Zechariah 9, 9?

  355. Why don't you hold your finger

  356. in Matthew 21?

  357. It's only a few pages back.

  358. You've got to go back

  359. into the Old Testament

  360. before Matthew,

  361. then through Malachi,

  362. just a short book,

  363. and into the book of Zechariah.

  364. So Matthew,

  365. and then go back to Malachi,

  366. and then go back to Zechariah.

  367. Zechariah 9, verse 9.

    Zechariah 9:9

  368. Let's look at that.

  369. When New Testament authors

  370. like Matthew

  371. quote from Old Testament prophets

  372. like Zechariah,

  373. they usually have in mind

  374. more than just that verse.

  375. They usually have in mind

  376. more than just that one statement.

  377. Usually,

  378. they have in mind

  379. the entire context

  380. of the Old Testament prophet.

  381. When they cite

  382. an Old Testament prophecy,

  383. people like Matthew

  384. are connecting

  385. the two passages together.

  386. They're connecting Matthew 21

  387. and Zechariah 9, 9,

  388. and they're inviting us

  389. to go back to Zechariah 9

  390. and to look at

  391. the entire passage there

  392. and all the ideas

  393. that are back there

  394. in Zechariah 9.

  395. And then,

  396. they invite us

  397. to import

  398. all of those ideas

  399. from that Old Testament passage

  400. back into the book of Matthew.

  401. Think about something

  402. like a hyperlink.

  403. Think about when you're

  404. on a webpage

  405. and you see a sentence

  406. underlined

  407. and you know that

  408. that's a hyperlink

  409. on the internet.

  410. It's not just that hyperlink

  411. that's in view.

  412. You're supposed to

  413. click that link

  414. and you go to

  415. an entire webpage

  416. and that webpage

  417. is supposed to inform

  418. what you're reading

  419. on the first one.

  420. Think about this example.

  421. Let's say that it's

  422. in mid-December

  423. and my friend

  424. is really being

  425. anti-Christmas

  426. and so I say to him,

  427. look,

  428. don't be a Scrooge.

  429. Well,

  430. I'm obviously alluding

  431. to the character Scrooge

  432. in Charles Dickens

  433. A Christmas Character.

  434. But then,

  435. why don't I just say

  436. to my friend,

  437. don't be grumpy?

  438. Isn't it just

  439. the same thing

  440. to say to someone,

  441. don't be grumpy

  442. as it is to say to them,

  443. don't be a Scrooge?

  444. It's not the same thing,

  445. not at all

  446. because when I call him Scrooge,

  447. I'm making a connection

  448. to Charles Dickens'

  449. Christmas Carol

  450. and I'm importing

  451. all of the associations

  452. from that book

  453. all at once

  454. and directing them

  455. at my friend.

  456. I'm calling my friend

  457. a miserly,

  458. isolated man

  459. who doesn't care

  460. about people in need.

  461. I'm calling him

  462. a man who doesn't

  463. just ignore Christmas

  464. but he hates it

  465. and ruins it

  466. for everyone else

  467. around him.

  468. I'm saying that my friend

  469. has fundamental flaws

  470. and blind spots.

  471. And I'm referring

  472. to my friend

  473. as someone

  474. who everyone else

  475. fears and avoids

  476. because of his sour attitude.

  477. When I call myself,

  478. when I call my friend Scrooge,

  479. I'm importing

  480. all of those associations

  481. from Charles Dickens'

  482. Christmas Carol

  483. in that one statement.

  484. It's actually

  485. very efficient communication.

  486. When Matthew quotes

  487. from Zechariah 9.9,

  488. it's like a link

  489. on a webpage

  490. and it's like Matthew

  491. is saying,

  492. I'm not just bringing this here

  493. for your convenience,

  494. I'm inviting you

  495. to go back to Zechariah

  496. and check that out.

  497. So let's do that.

  498. Let's look at Zechariah 9.

  499. Zechariah was a prophet

  500. in the time

  501. after the exile.

  502. God had punished

  503. his people

  504. by sending them

  505. into a foreign land

  506. and when he had

  507. brought them back

  508. from exile,

  509. even though it was

  510. a time of temporary restoration,

  511. it was a time

  512. that was very difficult.

  513. The Persian Empire

  514. who ruled them

  515. was incredibly unstable.

  516. Emperors kept dying,

  517. they kept dying in battle

  518. and every time

  519. an emperor would die,

  520. these little revolts

  521. and rebellions

  522. would rise up

  523. and the Persian Empire

  524. would send their military there

  525. and stamp out the revolt

  526. and kill people

  527. and burn down a city.

  528. The land of Israel

  529. was now a Persian province

  530. called Yehud,

  531. which is where we get

  532. the word Jew from.

  533. It was a much smaller territory

  534. than Israel had been

  535. before the exile.

  536. It was only about

  537. 50 square miles.

  538. There were only about

  539. 50,000 people

  540. that lived

  541. in the entire province.

  542. The temple

  543. that had symbolized

  544. God's presence

  545. and sort of the headquarters

  546. of his power

  547. on earth

  548. was in ruins.

  549. There was no more priesthood.

  550. The relationship

  551. with God

  552. had been fractured.

  553. There was poverty

  554. and social problems.

  555. The people

  556. were beginning

  557. to return

  558. to their old sins.

  559. They were marrying

  560. non-believers

  561. outside of the community.

  562. The leaders

  563. were oppressive

  564. and corrupt.

  565. False prophets

  566. were rising.

  567. Everyone was marked

  568. by incredible immorality.

  569. They were abusing

  570. the poor

  571. and taking advantage

  572. of those people

  573. in need.

  574. And this was supposed

  575. to be the restoration

  576. from exile.

  577. And so everyone

  578. is sitting around

  579. thinking,

  580. what hope is there

  581. for us?

  582. What hope is there

  583. for the future?

  584. What could God's plan

  585. possibly be

  586. moving forward?

  587. We are the people

  588. of God,

  589. but we are mired

  590. as the nobody

  591. subjects

  592. of the mighty

  593. Persian Empire

  594. just out of the way

  595. and just crumbling

  596. and decay.

  597. What hope

  598. could God

  599. possibly have

  600. for his people

  601. in the future?

  602. And then Zechariah

  603. comes along

  604. and he announces

  605. that the coming

  606. kingdom of God

  607. is yet in the future.

  608. That God

  609. is in charge

  610. of the world

  611. and he calls

  612. his people

  613. to repentance

  614. and into relationship

  615. with himself

  616. and someday

  617. he is coming

  618. to defeat

  619. the enemies

  620. of his people

  621. and to rule

  622. over a peaceful

  623. earth everywhere

  624. and he is going

  625. to set everything

  626. right.

  627. And this was the

  628. message of Zechariah.

  629. And throughout

  630. the book of Zechariah

  631. there is a focus

  632. on Jerusalem.

  633. In chapter 1

  634. he says

  635. God is going

  636. to restore

  637. Jerusalem.

  638. In chapter 2

  639. he says

  640. God is going

  641. to restore

  642. Jerusalem.

  643. In chapter 4

  644. in Zechariah

  645. he says

  646. God is going

  647. to rebuild

  648. the temple

  649. and that is going

  650. to be a symbol

  651. of his relationship

  652. with you.

  653. In chapter 6

  654. he says

  655. God is going

  656. to rebuild

  657. the temple

  658. and in chapter 8

  659. he says

  660. God is going

  661. to dwell

  662. in Jerusalem

  663. and someday

  664. all the peoples

  665. of the earth

  666. will be pilgrims

  667. to Jerusalem

  668. and they will

  669. come to worship

  670. God in Jerusalem

  671. because the temple

  672. is the place

  673. of God's special

  674. presence and power

  675. unlike anywhere

  676. else on earth.

  677. It's his headquarters.

  678. And so the Old Testament

  679. prophets state

  680. that at the end

  681. of time

  682. God is going

  683. to again

  684. take up residence

  685. in Jerusalem

  686. and all the peoples

  687. of the earth

  688. will come there

  689. to worship him.

  690. And so when we get

  691. to Zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  692. this is all

  693. in the background.

  694. Look what it says

  695. in Zechariah chapter 9.

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  696. In verses 1 through 8

  697. God the mighty warrior

  698. is coming to make war

  699. on his enemies

  700. and he marches

  701. from north to south

  702. down the coastland

  703. of the Mediterranean Sea

  704. laying waste

  705. to his enemies.

  706. He starts in verse 1

  707. with Hadrach

  708. and Damascus.

  709. Do you see that?

  710. Zechariah 9.1

  711. The oracle

  712. of the word

  713. of the Lord

  714. is against the land

  715. of Hadrach

  716. and Damascus

  717. for the Lord

  718. has an eye

  719. on mankind

  720. and on all

  721. the tribes

  722. of Israel.

  723. Just like an ancient

  724. ruler or even

  725. a modern day one

  726. for that matter

  727. has his eye

  728. on his subjects

  729. looking for

  730. whoever might

  731. be opposed to him

  732. or any rebellion

  733. that might be

  734. starting up.

  735. The Lord

  736. has his eye

  737. on all mankind.

  738. He rules over

  739. the entire earth.

  740. He is everywhere

  741. and he knows

  742. everything

  743. and he has

  744. total control

  745. of everything

  746. not just of Israel

  747. but on all mankind.

  748. And he starts

  749. up in Syria

  750. up in Damascus.

  751. He starts

  752. in the north

  753. in Syria

  754. the ancient

  755. enemies of Israel

  756. and he begins

  757. to work against them

  758. and to defeat them.

  759. And then in verse 2

  760. he moves south

  761. down to Tyre

  762. and Sidon.

  763. Tyre and Sidon

  764. were major enemies

  765. of Israel as well.

  766. They had a reputation

  767. of being so powerful

  768. and so wealthy.

  769. Look what it says

  770. in verse 2.

  771. Tyre and Sidon

  772. though they are

  773. very wise

  774. they were cultured

  775. and significant

  776. and intelligent.

  777. Not only that

  778. but they were

  779. well fortified.

  780. Look at verse 3.

  781. Tyre has built

  782. herself a rampart.

  783. Tyre was well known

  784. because they had

  785. a fortress

  786. in the ocean

  787. and it was

  788. so difficult

  789. to attack

  790. that fortress

  791. in the middle

  792. of the ocean

  793. that one time

  794. Nebuchadnezzar

  795. with the mighty

  796. Babylonian army

  797. came to attack Tyre

  798. and he put it

  799. under siege

  800. for 13 years

  801. and then he limped home.

  802. He was unable

  803. to conquer them

  804. so they became

  805. very proud.

  806. They thought

  807. they were invulnerable

  808. to attack.

  809. And not only that

  810. look at the rest

  811. of verse 3.

  812. They have heaped up

  813. silver like dust

  814. and find gold

  815. like the mud

  816. of the streets.

  817. Not only are they

  818. well fortified

  819. but they are wealthy.

  820. But look what it says

  821. in verse 4.

  822. Behold the Lord

  823. will strip Tyre

  824. of her possessions

  825. and strike down

  826. her power on the sea

  827. and she shall be

  828. devoured by fire.

  829. Think about some

  830. of the enemies

  831. of God.

  832. Think about some

  833. of the enemies

  834. in our own world

  835. who are opposed

  836. to God

  837. and to Christ.

  838. Institutions

  839. in our own culture

  840. governments

  841. all across the world

  842. who are well

  843. resourced

  844. intelligent

  845. we sometimes

  846. wonder

  847. is there any hope

  848. is there any hope

  849. against institutions

  850. like that?

  851. There is.

  852. He moves

  853. from Tyre

  854. after demolishing

  855. Tyre

  856. down to verse 5

  857. in Ashkelon

  858. and Gaza

  859. and Ekron

  860. these are the cities

  861. of the Philistines

  862. ancient enemies

  863. of Israel.

  864. He says Ashkelon

  865. will be afraid

  866. and Gaza

  867. will writhe

  868. in anguish

  869. and Ekron

  870. also

  871. because its hopes

  872. are confounded.

  873. Look at verse 8.

  874. Then I will encamp

  875. at my temple

  876. my house

  877. as a guard

  878. so that none

  879. shall march

  880. to and fro

  881. no oppressor

  882. shall again

  883. march over them

  884. for now I see

  885. with my own eyes.

  886. So God

  887. is coming

  888. as the warrior

  889. from Aram

  890. and Syria

  891. to Tyre

  892. and Sidon

  893. to the Philistines

  894. and then he comes

  895. to encamp

  896. at Jerusalem

  897. at his temple

  898. that is his place

  899. those are his people

  900. and he

  901. is the powerful God.

  902. His eyes

  903. are on Jerusalem

  904. and he will

  905. cleanse it

  906. and he will

  907. protect it

  908. and he is going

  909. to make sure

  910. that nothing

  911. is ever the same

  912. again.

  913. And then he says

  914. in verse 9

  915. rejoice greatly

  916. O daughter of Zion

  917. now it is time

  918. for celebration

  919. rejoice

  920. shout aloud

  921. O daughter of Jerusalem

  922. behold your king

  923. is coming to you

  924. righteous

  925. and having salvation

  926. is he

  927. humble

  928. and mounted

  929. on a donkey

  930. on a colt

  931. the foal

  932. of a donkey.

  933. God is going

  934. to establish

  935. his rule

  936. on earth

  937. through this

  938. special messianic king.

  939. Zion

  940. is another name

  941. for the temple mount

  942. that is the symbol

  943. of God's presence

  944. and power.

  945. He says

  946. that this king

  947. in verse 9

  948. is going

  949. to be humble

  950. but humble

  951. doesn't mean

  952. wimpy.

  953. Humble means

  954. dependent

  955. upon God

  956. that the king

  957. is going

  958. to be victorious

  959. because he

  960. because God

  961. has his back

  962. and he's mounted

  963. on a donkey

  964. which at first glance

  965. that seems a little

  966. odd because maybe

  967. we would like him

  968. to be mounted

  969. on a mighty stallion

  970. maybe a war horse

  971. that would be

  972. much more impressive

  973. than a donkey.

  974. But there's a long

  975. tradition in the Bible

  976. that a donkey

  977. means royalty.

  978. In Genesis 49

  979. a donkey

  980. was a part

  981. of the blessing

  982. of Judah

  983. who was in

  984. the messianic line.

  985. David rode

  986. into Jerusalem

  987. on a donkey.

  988. Solomon rode

  989. on a donkey

  990. when he was going

  991. to be made king.

  992. A donkey

  993. in the ancient world

  994. symbolized wealth

  995. and royalty

  996. and respect.

  997. And here comes

  998. the king

  999. of Zion

  1000. after God

  1001. has laid waste

  1002. to his enemies

  1003. riding into Jerusalem

  1004. on a donkey.

  1005. And then he concludes

  1006. look what he says

  1007. in verse 10

  1008. I will cut off

  1009. the chariot

  1010. from Ephraim

  1011. and the war horse

  1012. from Jerusalem

  1013. and the battle bow

  1014. shall be cut off.

  1015. He is going

  1016. to destroy

  1017. the weapons

  1018. he is going

  1019. to bring peace.

  1020. Look what he says

  1021. in verse 10

  1022. he shall speak

  1023. peace to the nations

  1024. his rule

  1025. shall be from sea

  1026. to sea

  1027. and from the river

  1028. to the ends

  1029. of the earth.

  1030. And in chapter 14

1031. at the end of the book

  1032. God announces

1033. that he will be king

  1034. over all the earth

  1035. and Jerusalem

  1036. will be safe

  1037. and secure

  1038. and everyone

  1039. who survives

  1040. in all the nations

  1041. will go up

  1042. to Jerusalem

  1043. to worship

  1044. the king

  1045. the God

  1046. of hosts.

  1047. So let's go back

  1048. to Matthew chapter 21

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  1049. can flip back

  1050. to where you've got

  1051. your finger

1052. all that is in the background

1053. and all that is being

  1054. triggered

  1055. by Jesus

  1056. getting on a donkey.

  1057. Matthew

  1058. has imported

  1059. by relating

  1060. this story

  1061. and Jesus

  1062. has imported

  1063. by climbing

  1064. on that donkey

  1065. all that Zechariah

  1066. had prophesied

  1067. about this coming king

  1068. the victory of God

  1069. over his enemies

  1070. and the restoration

  1071. of his people

  1072. and interestingly

  1073. in Matthew

  1074. the next thing

  1075. that Jesus

  1076. is going to do

1077. is go into the temple

  1078. and cleanse it.

  1079. Fascinating.

  1080. He is playing out

  1081. the script

  1082. that Zechariah

  1083. had predicted.

  1084. When Jesus

  1085. climbs on that donkey

  1086. and rides into Jerusalem

  1087. in the full sight

  1088. of everyone

  1089. he says

  1090. I am the king

  1091. I am the king

  1092. that was foretold

1093. in the book of Zechariah.

  1094. Before this

  1095. Jesus had always

  1096. kept his identity

  1097. a secret.

  1098. Remember that?

  1099. He healed a leper

  1100. and after he healed

  1101. the leper

  1102. he's like

  1103. don't tell anyone.

1104. He healed two blind men

  1105. he said

  1106. make sure no one

  1107. knows about this

  1108. I don't want anyone

1109. to know who I am.

  1110. It says later

  1111. that Jesus healed

  1112. many people

1113. and he told them all

  1114. don't tell people

  1115. who I am

  1116. I'm not ready

  1117. for that yet.

  1118. When the disciples

  1119. went up on the

  1120. Mount of Transfiguration

  1121. and they saw

  1122. Jesus glorified

  1123. and the voice

  1124. from heaven

  1125. Jesus said

  1126. to his disciples

  1127. don't tell anyone

  1128. about this

  1129. not yet.

  1130. But now

  1131. on the outskirts

  1132. of Jerusalem

  1133. he climbs

  1134. on a donkey

  1135. and he makes

  1136. a statement

  1137. in full view

  1138. of everyone

  1139. in full view

  1140. of the city

  1141. of Jerusalem

  1142. I am the king

  1143. I am the one

  1144. that the Old Testament

  1145. people of God

  1146. were waiting for

  1147. to transform

  1148. and restore them

  1149. I am the king

  1150. who will do battle

  1151. with the enemies

  1152. of God's people

  1153. and vanquish them

  1154. I am the king

  1155. who demands

  1156. your worship

  1157. and allegiance

  1158. I am the king

  1159. of all the earth

  1160. over all nations

  1161. and all peoples

  1162. I am the son

  1163. of David

  1164. the Messiah

  1165. that is his intention

  1166. in climbing

  1167. on a donkey

  1168. so now

  1169. in verses 6

  1170. through 11

  1171. in Matthew 21

  1172. Jesus enters

  1173. Jerusalem

  1174. and what we are

  1175. going to see

  1176. is two different

  1177. reactions to him

  1178. from the people

1179. it says in verse 6

  1180. the disciples

  1181. brought the young

  1182. colt and its mother

  1183. they put their

  1184. clothes on them

  1185. there was no saddle

  1186. they put their

  1187. clothes on the donkey

  1188. and Jesus sat

  1189. on the young colt

  1190. that had never

  1191. been ridden before

  1192. the mother was

  1193. probably there

  1194. to give comfort

  1195. because it is

  1196. a busy crowded

  1197. place

  1198. and the donkey

  1199. was probably nervous

  1200. the colt was nervous

  1201. and as Jesus

  1202. begins to go

  1203. into Jerusalem

  1204. we see the first

  1205. of two responses

  1206. first of all

  1207. is the crowd

  1208. of people

  1209. who were entering

  1210. Jerusalem

  1211. with Jesus

  1212. they had probably

  1213. come also

  1214. from Galilee

  1215. they were entering

  1216. Jerusalem

  1217. with Jesus

  1218. they were fellow

  1219. pilgrims of his

  1220. and they knew

  1221. Jesus already

  1222. they had heard

  1223. of him

  1224. and there were

  1225. people walking

  1226. in front of Jesus

  1227. and people walking

  1228. behind Jesus

  1229. as he makes

  1230. his way

  1231. into Jerusalem

  1232. and they begin

  1233. an extravagant

  1234. celebration

  1235. they're pulling

  1236. their clothes off

  1237. and throwing them

  1238. on the road

  1239. they're cutting

  1240. down palm branches

  1241. and laying them

  1242. like a red carpet

  1243. for the king

1244. and as they go along

  1245. in this procession

  1246. into Jerusalem

  1247. these people

  1248. from Galilee

  1249. are shouting

  1250. Hosanna

1251. to the son of David

  1252. blessed is he

  1253. who comes

  1254. in the name

  1255. of the Lord

  1256. Hosanna

  1257. in the highest

  1258. the phrase

  1259. son of David

  1260. is a clear

  1261. messianic reference

  1262. and the rest

  1263. of what they say

  1264. comes from

  1265. Psalm 118

  1266. which is a

  1267. messianic psalm

  1268. about the king

  1269. leading pilgrims

  1270. into Jerusalem

  1271. so they aren't

  1272. just calling

  1273. Jesus a king

  1274. they're calling

  1275. him the king

  1276. this is the

  1277. Messiah

  1278. that they have

  1279. been waiting

  1280. for

  1281. foretold

  1282. by the prophets

  1283. their response

  1284. isn't done yet

  1285. we'll come back

  1286. to them

  1287. but in the meantime

  1288. we go to

  1289. group number

  1290. two

  1291. that's the

  1292. Galileans

  1293. we'll go to

  1294. the people

  1295. of Jerusalem

  1296. group number

  1297. two

  1298. in verse

  1299. ten

  1300. and it says

  1301. when he

  1302. entered

  1303. Jerusalem

  1304. the whole

  1305. city

  1306. was stirred

  1307. up

  1308. stirred up

  1309. isn't a

  1310. fantastic

  1311. translation

  1312. because what

  1313. that word

  1314. stirred up

  1315. means

  1316. is

  1317. terrified

  1318. they were

  1319. terrified

  1320. they were

  1321. shaking

  1322. when they

  1323. saw Jesus

  1324. coming up

  1325. the hill

  1326. on the donkey

  1327. and all

  1328. the people

  1329. coming into

  1330. the city

  1331. with him

  1332. shouting

  1333. it's the

  1334. Messiah

  1335. it's the

  1336. son of

  1337. David

  1338. save us

  1339. they were

  1340. like oh

  1341. no

  1342. oh no

  1343. what's

  1344. happening

  1345. here

  1346. they were

  1347. shaking

  1348. and terrified

  1349. and they

  1350. said

  1351. who is

  1352. this

  1353. and then

  1354. the crowds

  1355. who were

  1356. entering

  1357. with Jesus

  1358. will go

  1359. back to

  1360. group number

  1361. one

  1362. then they

  1363. say this

  1364. is the

  1365. prophet

  1366. Jesus

  1367. from

  1368. Nazareth

  1369. of

  1370. Galilee

  1371. that's

  1372. an odd

  1373. thing

  1374. to say

  1375. it's odd

  1376. for two

  1377. reasons

  1378. first of all

  1379. they call

  1380. him a

  1381. prophet

  1382. which is

  1383. a bit

  1384. inadequate

  1385. given what

  1386. they were

  1387. just shouting

  1388. on the road

  1389. that's a

  1390. little bit

  1391. inadequate

  1392. and second

  1393. look what

  1394. they say

  1395. they say

  1396. he's from

  1397. Nazareth

  1398. of Galilee

  1399. there was

  1400. tension

  1401. between the

  1402. people of

  1403. Jerusalem

  1404. and the

  1405. people of

  1406. Galilee

  1407. you know

  1408. in our

  1409. culture

  1410. it's this

  1411. way too

  1412. you know

  1413. I like to

  1414. listen to

  1415. country music

  1416. and you know

  1417. in country

  1418. music

  1419. there's all

  1420. these songs

  1421. about how

  1422. the city

  1423. is bad

  1424. the city

  1425. is dangerous

  1426. the country

  1427. is better

  1428. then the

  1429. people in

  1430. the city

  1431. think that

  1432. people in

  1433. the country

  1434. are weirdos

  1435. and that

  1436. they're

  1437. simpletons

  1438. and the

  1439. people in

  1440. LA and

  1441. in California

  1442. talk about

  1443. Nebraska

  1444. as flyover

  1445. country

  1446. so there's

  1447. this tension

  1448. between the

  1449. people in

  1450. the city

  1451. and the

  1452. people in

  1453. the country

  1454. right

  1455. even in

  1456. our own

  1457. culture

  1458. a little

  1459. bit

  1460. and that's

  1461. how it

  1462. was back

  1463. then

  1464. there was

  1465. tension

  1466. political

  1467. and cultural

  1468. tension

  1469. between the

  1470. people in

  1471. Jerusalem

  1472. who thought

  1473. they were

  1474. kind of

  1475. big stuff

  1476. and the

  1477. people of

  1478. Galilee

  1479. who were

  1480. kind of

  1481. in the

  1482. flyover

  1483. country

  1484. and so

  1485. when the

  1486. people of

  1487. Jerusalem

  1488. say

  1489. who is

  1490. this

  1491. who is

  1492. this

  1493. who's

  1494. coming

  1495. to our

  1496. city

  1497. then the

  1498. people of

  1499. Galilee

  1500. say

  1501. he's

  1502. from

  1503. Nazareth

  1504. he's

  1505. from Galilee

  1506. he's

  1507. one of

  1508. ours

  1509. we got

  1510. this

  1511. see

  1512. they're

  1513. claiming

  1514. him

  1515. they like

  1516. that

  1517. they like

  1518. the prestige

  1519. they like

  1520. that this

  1521. guy coming

  1522. into town

  1523. on a

  1524. donkey

  1525. he's

  1526. from

  1527. Galilee

  1528. we got

  1529. this

  1530. and so

  1531. this

  1532. triumphal

  1533. entry

  1534. is a

  1535. little

  1536. bit

  1537. of a

  1538. dud

  1539. because

  1540. Jesus

  1541. climbs

  1542. on this

  1543. donkey

  1544. and at

  1545. first

  1546. everyone's

  1547. saying

  1548. all the

  1549. right

  1550. things

  1551. they're

  1552. quoting

  1553. scripture

  1554. they're

  1555. saying

  1556. it's

  1557. the

  1558. Messiah

  1559. it's

  1560. the

  1561. Messiah

  1562. it's

  1563. the

  1564. Messiah

  1565. but

  1566. once

  1567. he

  1568. gets

  1569. into

  1570. the

  1571. city

  1572. then

  1573. one

  1574. group

  1575. says

  1576. I

  1577. like

  1578. the

  1579. sound

  1580. of

  1581. this

  1582. it

  1583. kind

  1584. of

  1585. terrifies

  1586. me

  1587. and the

  1588. other

  1589. group

  1590. is

  1591. sort of

  1592. claiming

  1593. him

  1594. in

  1595. some

  1596. sort

  1597. of

  1598. turf

  1599. war

  1600. and

  1601. then

  1602. the

  1603. story

  1604. ends

  1605. and

  1606. it's

  1607. just

  1608. kind

  1609. of

  1610. a

  1611. dud

  1612. it's

  1613. not

  1614. a

  1615. triumphal

  1616. entry

  1617. it's

  1618. a

  1619. not

  1620. so

  1621. triumphal

  1622. entry

  1623. interesting

  1624. so

  1625. the

  1626. story

  1627. revolves

  1628. when you

  1629. think about

  1630. the story

  1631. as a whole

  1632. it revolves

  1633. around one

  1634. key contrast

  1635. and that is

  1636. the contrast

  1637. between who

  1638. Jesus is

  1639. versus who

  1640. everybody wants

  1641. him to be

  1642. on the one

  1643. hand

  1644. Jesus makes a

  1645. clear claim

  1646. to be the king

  1647. foretold in

  1648. Zechariah

  1649. in that passage

  1650. he rules for a

  1651. conquering God

  1652. who defeats his

  1653. enemy and saves

  1654. his people in

  1655. victory

  1656. and he brings

  1657. peace

  1658. peace

  1659. by trusting

  1660. in God's

  1661. plan

  1662. but then

  1663. on the other

  1664. hand

  1665. there are

  1666. these groups

  1667. of people

  1668. who have

  1669. two different

  1670. two different

  1671. perspectives about

  1672. who he is

  1673. and what they

  1674. want from him

  1675. let's look at

  1676. those

  1677. first of all

  1678. the crowd

  1679. with Jesus

  1680. they shout

  1681. and cheer

  1682. and throw

  1683. their clothes

  1684. and then

  1685. but then

  1686. when they're

  1687. asked who

  1688. he is

  1689. they say

  1690. well

  1691. he's on

  1692. our team

  1693. they're

  1694. looking

  1695. only for

  1696. glory

  1697. maybe

  1698. they feel

  1699. marginalized

  1700. or they

  1701. don't have

  1702. the same

  1703. kind of

  1704. influence

  1705. that Jerusalem

  1706. has

  1707. they're

  1708. from that

  1709. flyover

  1710. country

  1711. and this

  1712. is their

  1713. chance

  1714. this is

  1715. their chance

  1716. to be

  1717. somebody

  1718. maybe Jesus

  1719. can raise

  1720. their status

  1721. raise their

  1722. political profile

  1723. kind of put

  1724. them on the

  1725. map a little

  1726. bit

  1727. but Jesus

  1728. is not

  1729. coming to

  1730. take sides

  1731. he's not

  1732. coming to

  1733. gather support

  1734. in local

  1735. politics

  1736. he hasn't

  1737. arrived in

  1738. Jerusalem

  1739. to settle

  1740. disputes

  1741. or to

  1742. raise up

  1743. one

  1744. particular

  1745. constituency

  1746. he is

  1747. coming to

  1748. Jerusalem

  1749. to die

  1750. on a

  1751. cross

  1752. he is

  1753. in

  1754. Jerusalem

  1755. for

  1756. suffering

  1757. and for

  1758. humiliation

  1759. there will

  1760. be a

  1761. crown

  1762. but it

  1763. will be

  1764. a crown

  1765. of thorns

  1766. there will

  1767. be

  1768. worshippers

  1769. but they

  1770. will be

  1771. soldiers

  1772. pretending

  1773. to bow

  1774. down to

  1775. him

  1776. to make

  1777. fun of

  1778. him

  1779. he will

  1780. accomplish

  1781. his goal

  1782. but that

  1783. is going

  1784. to be

  1785. his own

  1786. death

  1787. as a

  1788. sacrifice

  1789. and then

  1790. later

  1791. he will

  1792. come back

  1793. in victory

  1794. to vindicate

  1795. his people

  1796. and ruin

  1797. his enemies

  1798. forever

  1799. but that's

  1800. later

  1801. so this

  1802. first group

  1803. of people

  1804. the people

  1805. of Galilee

  1806. they want

  1807. him to be

  1808. king

  1809. but that's

  1810. for them

  1811. that's

  1812. so that

  1813. he can

  1814. solve

  1815. some of

  1816. the local

  1817. problems

  1818. that they

  1819. have

  1820. the other

  1821. group

  1822. is the

  1823. people

  1824. of Jerusalem

  1825. they don't

  1826. recognize

  1827. Jesus

  1828. you know

  1829. they say

  1830. you know

  1831. you get

  1832. so many

  1833. people

  1834. coming to

  1835. Jerusalem

  1836. for Passover

  1837. you get

  1838. so many

  1839. people

  1840. I don't

  1841. know

  1842. they don't

  1843. recognize

  1844. the claims

  1845. that he's

  1846. making

  1847. but the fact

  1848. that everyone

  1849. is proclaiming

  1850. Jesus as

  1851. the king

  1852. that's just

  1853. going to

  1854. cause trouble

  1855. that's going

  1856. to rock

  1857. the boat

  1858. that's going

  1859. to mess

  1860. up the

  1861. status quo

  1862. I mean

  1863. think about

  1864. it

  1865. things with

  1866. Rome

  1867. are sensitive

  1868. it's a

  1869. delicate

  1870. political

  1871. balance

  1872. you cause

  1873. too much

  1874. of a

  1875. too much

  1876. you stir

  1877. things up

  1878. too much

  1879. here come

  1880. the Roman

  1881. soldiers

  1882. they're going

  1883. to kill

  1884. some people

  1885. they're going

  1886. to throw

  1887. some people

  1888. in jail

  1889. they're going

  1890. to clamp

  1891. down on

  1892. the freedoms

  1893. of the people

  1894. in Jerusalem

  1895. there's this

  1896. uneasy balance

  1897. and the people

  1898. in Jerusalem

  1899. are like

  1900. oh great

  1901. we're calling

  1902. him a king

  1903. this is just

  1904. going to

  1905. upset the

  1906. status quo

  1907. I mean

  1908. things are

  1909. already bad

  1910. but they could

  1911. be a lot

  1912. worse

  1913. in our

  1914. relationship

  1915. with Rome

  1916. but the

  1917. problem

  1918. for these

  1919. people is

  1920. that Jesus

  1921. is coming

  1922. to rock

  1923. the boat

  1924. he's coming

  1925. to call

  1926. people into

  1927. a new

  1928. kingdom

  1929. the kingdom

  1930. of God

  1931. and that

  1932. is going

  1933. to require

  1934. on their

  1935. part

  1936. a new

  1937. allegiance

  1938. the people

  1939. in Jerusalem

  1940. need to

  1941. let go

  1942. of their

  1943. political

  1944. power

  1945. of their

  1946. political

  1947. structures

  1948. of the

  1949. influence

  1950. that they

  1951. have

  1952. of their

  1953. nice

  1954. neat

  1955. tidy

  1956. little

  1957. lives

  1958. they need

  1959. to let

  1960. go

  1961. of those

  1962. uneasy

  1963. alliances

  1964. that they

  1965. formed

  1966. and they

  1967. need to

  1968. join

  1969. the king

  1970. the irony

  1971. is

  1972. that Jesus

  1973. is their

  1974. true

  1975. victorious

  1976. messianic

  1977. king

  1978. coming

  1979. into

  1980. Jerusalem

  1981. and Rome

  1982. is their

  1983. oppressive

  1984. ruler

  1985. but they're

  1986. so afraid

  1987. that Jesus

  1988. is going

  1989. to get

  1990. them in

  1991. trouble

  1992. with Rome

  1993. they're like

  1994. you know

  1995. what

  1996. no

  1997. no

  1998. and so

  1999. the people

  2000. from Jerusalem

  2001. are ultimately

  2002. in just

  2003. just a couple

  2004. of days

  2005. are going

  2006. to kill

  2007. Jesus

  2008. in order

  2009. to avoid

  2010. all that

  2011. trouble

  2012. in the

  2013. book of

  2014. John

  2015. in chapter

  2016. 19

  2017. Pilate

  2018. says

  2019. to the

  2020. chief

  2021. priest

  2022. shall I

  2023. crucify

  2024. your

  2025. king

  2026. and the

  2027. people

  2028. of

  2029. Jerusalem

  2030. say

  2031. we have

  2032. no

  2033. king

  2034. but

  2035. Caesar

  2036. so

  2037. Pilate

  2038. delivered

  2039. him

  2040. over

  2041. to them

  2042. to be

  2043. crucified

  2044. so here

  2045. I think

  2046. is the

  2047. main point

  2048. of the

  2049. story

  2050. accept

  2051. Jesus

  2052. as the

  2053. true

  2054. king

  2055. even

  2056. if he

  2057. may not

  2058. be what

  2059. you're

  2060. looking

  2061. for

  2062. what

  2063. do we

  2064. want

  2065. in a

  2066. king

  2067. someone

  2068. to solve

  2069. our

  2070. problems

  2071. someone

  2072. to lower

  2073. our

  2074. taxes

  2075. someone

  2076. to support

  2077. our

  2078. values

  2079. someone

  2080. to raise

  2081. our

  2082. status

  2083. or maybe

  2084. someone

  2085. to just

  2086. sort of

  2087. leave us

  2088. alone

  2089. or who

  2090. isn't going

  2091. to ask

  2092. very much

  2093. or is

  2094. going to

  2095. support

  2096. my life

  2097. as it

  2098. is right

  2099. now

  2100. or someone

  2101. is going

  2102. to let

  2103. me keep

  2104. what I

  2105. have

  2106. my pride

  2107. my

  2108. resources

  2109. but the

  2110. problem

  2111. is

  2112. we don't

  2113. always do

  2114. a very

  2115. good job

  2116. of knowing

  2117. what our

  2118. real needs

  2119. are

  2120. we have

  2121. bigger

  2122. problems

  2123. than high

  2124. taxes

  2125. and government

  2126. corruption

  2127. and terrorism

  2128. we need

  2129. something

  2130. a lot

  2131. more

  2132. significant

  2133. than that

  2134. the problem

  2135. is that

  2136. we

  2137. misdiagnose

  2138. what we

  2139. need

  2140. we search

  2141. for the

  2142. wrong

  2143. kind

  2144. of king

  2145. and then

  2146. we miss

  2147. God's

  2148. true king

  2149. instead

  2150. we need

  2151. to accept

  2152. Jesus

  2153. as the

  2154. true king

  2155. even though

  2156. he may

  2157. not be

  2158. what we

  2159. were

  2160. originally

  2161. looking

  2162. for

  2163. we need

  2164. our sins

  2165. forgiven

  2166. we need

  2167. freedom

  2168. from the

  2169. destructive

  2170. patterns

  2171. to which

  2172. we've

  2173. committed

  2174. ourselves

  2175. we know

  2176. if we're

  2177. honest

  2178. that our

  2179. own

  2180. hearts

  2181. are dark

  2182. and that

  2183. we need

  2184. transformation

  2185. we need

  2186. peace

  2187. with God

  2188. we need

  2189. hope

  2190. for the

  2191. future

  2192. we need

  2193. hope

  2194. that wherever

  2195. sin is not

  2196. ultimately

  2197. cured

  2198. that it

  2199. will be

  2200. destroyed

  2201. and Jesus

  2202. presents himself

  2203. to us

  2204. as God's

  2205. king

  2206. and so

  2207. here's the

  2208. call

  2209. of this

  2210. simple

  2211. story

  2212. to accept

  2213. God's

  2214. king

  2215. instead of

  2216. the one

  2217. that we

  2218. would make

  2219. for

  2220. ourselves

  2221. to repent

  2222. of our

  2223. sins

  2224. and to

  2225. repent

  2226. of our

  2227. old

  2228. allegiances

  2229. and to

  2230. let go

  2231. of our

  2232. own

  2233. kingdoms

  2234. so that

  2235. we can

  2236. join

  2237. his

  2238. behold

  2239. your king

  2240. is coming

  2241. to you

  2242. humble

  2243. and mounted

  2244. on a

  2245. donkey

  2246. he is

  2247. Christ

  2248. the king

  2249. amen

  2250. let's

  2251. pray

  2252. father

  2253. father we

  2254. stand on

  2255. this side

  2256. of the

  2257. cross

  2258. after you

  2259. had gone

  2260. to the

  2261. cross

  2262. and given

  2263. yourself over

  2264. to death

  2265. after you

  2266. had raised

  2267. victoriously

  2268. from the

  2269. grave

  2270. and seated

  2271. yourself at

  2272. the right

  2273. hand of the

  2274. father

  2275. interceding

  2276. for us

  2277. lord we

  2278. praise you

  2279. we praise

  2280. you as

  2281. our great

  2282. king

  2283. and we

  2284. look forward

  2285. to the

  2286. time you

  2287. come back

  2288. in the

  2289. future

  2290. to

  2291. defeat your

  2292. enemies

  2293. to destroy

  2294. sin once

  2295. and for

  2296. all

  2297. to reign

  2298. in peace

  2299. and justice

  2300. from sea

  2301. to sea

  2302. we pray

  2303. in the

  2304. meantime

  2305. before

  2306. between

  2307. the time

  2308. of your

  2309. humiliating

  2310. death

  2311. and your

  2312. future

  2313. victory

  2314. that we

  2315. would

  2316. follow you

  2317. with all

  2318. of our

  2319. hearts

  2320. and souls

  2321. we would

  2322. accept you

  2323. and that

  2324. this passage

  2325. would strengthen

  2326. our faith

  2327. in who you

  2328. are

  2329. and warn

  2330. us against

  2331. missing you

  2332. we accept

  2333. you as our

  2334. great king

  2335. and we

  2336. praise you

  2337. father son

  2338. and holy

  2339. spirit

  2340. amen
