  1. Last week we saw Jesus and his not so triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

  2. And this morning we're going to see Jesus enter the temple with kind of mixed response.

  3. So if you would open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 21.

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  4. I'm going to read through verses 12 through 17.

  5. And as we're reading remember that Jesus wants your heart when it comes to worshiping him.

  6. All of it.

  7. And when we think about our church as a whole.

  8. All of our hearts.

  9. In our worship of his great name.

  10. And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple.

  11. And he overturned the tables of the money changers.

  12. And the seats of those who sold pigeons or doves.

  13. He said to them it is written my house shall be called a house of prayer.

  14. But you make it a den of robbers.

  15. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple.

  16. And he healed them.

  17. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did.

  18. And the children crying out in the temple.

  19. Hosanna to the son of David.

  20. The chief priests and the scribes.

  21. They were indignant.

  22. And they said to Jesus.

  23. Do you hear what these are saying?

  24. And Jesus said to them.

  25. Yes.

  26. Have you never read out of the mouth of infants and nursing babes you have prepared praise?

  27. And leaving them he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

  28. This morning I'm just going to walk us through this passage.

  29. We're going to see Jesus in the temple.

  30. And then we're going to see Jesus drive out some insiders.

  31. And then Jesus is going to welcome in some outsiders.

  32. And then Jesus is going to be recognized and be praised by a bunch of kids.

  33. And then Jesus is going to be criticized by a bunch of blind religious leaders.

  34. And then Jesus is going to wrap it up by saying their praise vindicates me.

  35. So let's look at Jesus entering the temple.

  36. The first five words of verse 12.

  37. And Jesus entered the temple.

  38. Now you might be thinking.

  39. Come on Salvati.

  40. Let's get to the action.

  41. Let's get to Jesus throwing some tables around.

  42. Well if we did that we would miss something of incredible significance.

  43. Jesus entered the temple.

  44. The temple is going to be an important backdrop in the remaining chapters of Matthew.

  45. But what I want to remind you of is that the Bible is a story of God dwelling with his people.

  46. Remember back in the Garden of Eden.

  47. God was present with his first people Adam and Eve.

  48. They hung out in the cool of the day together.

  49. Fast forward to the tabernacle.

  50. God's people Israel have been released sent out of Egypt.

  51. And God dwells in the midst of his people.

  52. And he has them construct for him a really elaborate tent called a tabernacle.

  53. And as God's people Israel were moving into the promised land.

  54. God would be with them in their midst.

  55. And he would come and descend in a cloud in this temple.

  56. And Moses would meet with him.

  57. God present with his people.

  58. Fast forward to Solomon.

  59. And the building of the first temple in Jerusalem in the promised land.

  60. Solomon builds this glorious temple.

  61. And we read how after the temple is dedicated.

  62. God in a cloud of his presence descends and occupies the temple.

  63. God present with his people.

  64. And what we read in Ezra.

  65. There's this awful thing that happens in 586.

  66. The Babylonians come in.

  67. They totally destroy the temple.

  68. But in Ezra, God rebuilds the temple.

  69. And it's the second temple.

  70. The temple of Zerubbabel.

  71. And it's this temple that Herod the Great decides to do a serious overhaul on.

  72. And expand and make amazing.

  73. And it's that temple that Jesus walks into that we're reading about right now.

  74. God has always dwelt with his people.

  75. God has always dwelt with his people.

  76. If you flip back to Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  77. Verses 22 and 23.

  78. Talking about the birth of Jesus.

  79. Typically we hear this around Christmas time.

  80. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

  81. Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

  82. And they should call his name Emmanuel.

  83. Which means God with us.

  84. Whose name is that?

  85. Jesus.

  86. He is God with us.

  87. He is God incarnate.

  88. Do you remember John chapter 1?

    John 1 chapter mention

  89. Talking about Jesus.

  90. He's the word.

  91. And he dwelt among us.

  92. He tabernacled among us.

  93. So the significance of what happens in these first five words of Matthew 21 verse 12 is this.

    Matthew 21:12

  94. God incarnate is entering the temple.

  95. He's occupying the temple.

  96. He's walking into the place that Jews of that day said there's where God's presence is.

  97. Jesus.

  98. And Jesus.

  99. God incarnate.

  100. Walks in.

  101. Now the question comes up.

  102. What's he going to do?

  103. And what we see him do when he walks in.

  104. Is that he's going to drive out the insiders.

  105. And so look at again verses 12 and 13.

  106. Let's look at 12.

  107. And Jesus entered the temple.

  108. God incarnate coming into his house.

  109. And he drove out all who sold and bought in the temple.

  110. And he overturned the tables of the money changers.

  111. And the seats of those who sold pigeons.

  112. I mean typically we don't like to think of Jesus this way.

  113. We think of Jesus as the prince of peace.

  114. And who holds babies.

  115. And carries little lambs over his shoulders.

  116. But right now what we're seeing is Jesus.

  117. Jesus is intense.

  118. He walks into the temple.

  119. And things get intense.

  120. He drives out people.

  121. He overturns furniture.

  122. He's being aggressive.

  123. Why is he so spicy?

  124. Why is he so worked up?

  125. Why is he so quiet?

  126. Well it has to do with the people.

  127. That are in the temple.

  128. So let's look at who these people are.

  129. These are people who are selling and buying.

  130. These are people who are exchanging money.

  131. These are people who are selling pigeons or doves.

  132. Who are these people?

  133. And what are they doing there?

  134. Well I want to remind you that Jesus has entered into Jerusalem.

  135. The week leading up to Passover.

  136. Which is a great feast in Jerusalem.

  137. So Jerusalem the city.

  138. Is filling up with people.

  139. In order to celebrate Passover.

  140. To observe it.

  141. It's a big holy festival.

  142. And so you have all these people coming into this city.

  143. From all over the place.

  144. To quote unquote worship.

  145. And part of their worship is going to be sacrifice.

  146. So the offering of a Passover lamb.

  147. Now if we all were living in Capernaum.

  148. And we're saying we're going to make this multi-mile trip down to Jerusalem to observe Passover.

  149. And we're like thinking what do we bring with us?

  150. And we're like should we bring our Passover lamb?

  151. And I'm going to tell you you know what?

  152. We've got multiple days ahead of us.

  153. We can buy one in Jerusalem.

  154. Just leave the lamb here.

  155. We'll pick one up there.

  156. Or let's say we're from Sidon.

  157. And we're using Roman money in order to kind of make our living.

  158. And kind of buy our stuff.

  159. If we were to go to Jerusalem and give a money offering in the temple.

  160. We would need to convert our Roman money into the currency of the temple.

  161. Which was Tyrian money from Tyre.

  162. Because it was such a solid currency of the day.

  163. And so we would need to exchange our money.

  164. There was a real need.

  165. If we were poor people coming down into Jerusalem.

  166. The animal that we could afford to sacrifice is a dove.

  167. Those are the dove salesmen there.

  168. So these people who are inside the temple.

  169. They are selling animals.

  170. They're exchanging money.

  171. They're facilitating the quote unquote worship of Passover week.

  172. I'm not sure if you all have been down to the harbor market on Saturday mornings.

  173. I love going down there.

  174. Part of the way I love going down there is it's a lot of hustle and bustle.

  175. I like that.

  176. So there's a lot going on.

  177. And so imagine Jesus walking into the temple.

  178. And he essentially walks into a harbor market.

  179. So what's going on here is this.

  180. Passover afforded a business opportunity.

  181. And the outer courts of the temple were thrown open for business.

  182. And so of course there's the opportunity for exploiting people.

  183. But the real problem is where all this business is taking place.

  184. It's taking place in the temple.

  185. Now you may be asking yourself.

  186. Well what's wrong with conducting business in the temple?

  187. Well look at verse 13.

  188. Jesus is driving these people out.

  189. And as he's driving them out.

  190. He says it is written.

  191. My house shall be called a house of prayer.

  192. But you make it a den of robbers.

  193. See these folks.

  194. They had repurposed the temple.

  195. In order to line their pockets.

  196. They weren't there to facilitate worship.

  197. They were facilitating their monthly income.

  198. Now before the internet.

  199. When it comes to a retail business.

  200. It's all about location.

  201. So these entrepreneurs.

  202. In the outer courts of the temple.

  203. They're just thinking.

  204. Hey if we can get into the temple.

  205. And sell our goats and our doves.

  206. And exchange some money.

  207. In order to make some money.

  208. Because they would charge on that.

  209. I mean.

  210. It's one stop shopping.

  211. It's so convenient.

  212. And so what Jesus sees happening here.

  213. Is the profaning of God's place.

  214. The temple being used for something.

  215. It was never intended to be used for.

  216. It's not meant to be used for the acquisition of wealth.

  217. It's used.

  218. It's there for the giving of praise to God.

  219. So Jesus kicks out these people.

  220. Because they're profaning the temple.

  221. They've repurposed it.

  222. For income production.

  223. Not praise production.

  224. So imagine with me.

  225. We're all Gentiles.

  226. We're coming down from Sidon.

  227. We're like.

  228. We're convinced.

  229. Yahweh is the one true God.

  230. Let's go down and worship him.

  231. Passover week in Jerusalem.

  232. We're cool.

  233. Going into the temple.

  234. We'll go into the courts of the Gentiles.

  235. We can't go any further than that.

  236. We're okay with that.

  237. Because we're just happy to acknowledge that Yahweh is the one true God.

  238. So we all walk in together.

  239. We walk through the outer courts.

  240. With all this hustle and bustle of business going on.

  241. We walk into the court of the Gentiles.

  242. And all along.

  243. All the way down.

  244. We're like.

  245. I can't wait to sing.

  246. To speak.

  247. Psalm 8.

  248. To God.

  249. In his temple.

  250. As someone from Sidon.

  251. I can't wait.

  252. So we get into the court of the Gentiles.

  253. And I set up shop.

  254. And I'm like.

  255. I am ready to give praise.

  256. To the God of the Bible.

  257. And I'm going to let Psalm 8 rip.

  258. And so.

  259. As I feel.

  260. From my innermost man.

  261. All this praise coming up.

  262. And I'm going to rip out of Psalm.

  263. Meh.

  264. Meh.

  265. Meh.

  266. Meh.

  267. Meh.

  268. My praise is distracted.

  269. There was another kind of worship going on in the temple.

  270. It's not the worship of God.

  271. Jesus sees it.

  272. And out of his jealousy and zeal for God's worship.

  273. He drives these people out.

  274. They're the insiders.

  275. They're supposed to be facilitating worship.

  276. But they're not facilitating the worship of God.

  277. They've been profaning the temple.

  278. It's not what it's meant for.

  279. So Jesus drives them out.

  280. That reference.

  281. Where Jesus says.

  282. It's written.

  283. My house shall be called a house of prayer.

  284. It's taken from Isaiah 56.

  285. And in Isaiah 56.

  286. God is telling.

  287. About a future time.

  288. When he will gather.

  289. Foreigners.

  290. And outcasts of Israel.

  291. Outsiders.

  292. And he's going to bring them into his temple.

  293. And they are going to be made joyful.

  294. In the praise of God.

  295. There's going to come a time.

  296. When they will offer.

  297. Make offerings.

  298. And God will accept them.

  299. From these outsiders.

  300. Because their hearts are right.

  301. And so when Jesus says.

  302. For my house shall be called a house of prayer.

  303. For all peoples.

  304. For all peoples.

  305. When he sees these insiders.

  306. Distracting people.

  307. From the true worship of God.

  308. He.

  309. God incarnate.

  310. Walks in.

  311. And he says.

  312. You're out.

  313. No temple for you.

  314. You're out.

  315. You're out.

  316. God.

  317. So the irony is.

  318. That these people.

  319. Who are supposed to be.

  320. Facilitating worship.

  321. Were actually distracting.

  322. From the true worship of God.

  323. So this is a side of Jesus.

  324. That we may not.

  325. Be used to seeing.

  326. Jesus being forceful.

  327. Jesus being angry.

  328. There seems to be a hostility here.

  329. He's throwing tables and chairs around.

  330. You could say.

  331. He's kind of being pushy.

  332. He's driving people out.

  333. Of the temple.

  334. And we got to ask the question.

  335. Why?

  336. And the answer to that question is.

  337. Jesus is jealous.

  338. For God to be truly.

  339. And fully worshiped.

  340. He's protective.

  341. Of the glory.

  342. And honor.

  343. And praise.

  344. And majesty.

  345. Due to God.

  346. And God.

  347. Alone.

  348. These business people.

  349. Were profaning.

  350. The holy purpose of the temple.

  351. And when God incarnate.

  352. Walks in.

  353. And sees what is happening.

  354. He drives them out.

  355. It's not going to happen here.

  356. He drives out the insiders.

  357. So here's what this means.

  358. For us today.

  359. There's no longer a temple.

  360. The temple that Jesus stood in.

  361. Was raised.

  362. In AD 70.

  363. It's no longer there.

  364. But what we learn about.

  365. Is that.

  366. After Jesus death.

  367. And resurrection.

  368. Jesus.

  369. Has established.

  370. A new temple.

  371. And this new temple.

  372. Is not made out of bricks and mortar.

  373. As first Peter would say.

  374. This new temple.

  375. Is made out of living stones.

  376. God's people.

  377. Are the new temple.

  378. Of God.

  379. We.

  380. Are the temple of God.

  381. Indwelt.

  382. By the Holy Spirit.

  383. It's a better temple.

  384. And here's what this means.

  385. For us now.

  386. Jesus is just as jealous.

  387. For the worship of God.

  388. In this temple.

  389. As he was.

  390. In that temple.

  391. God.

  392. He wants us.

  393. To be.

  394. Wholly.

  395. Focused.

  396. On the worship.

  397. Of our God.

  398. When we gather together.

  399. He's jealous.

  400. For that.

  401. He's.

  402. Lovingly.

  403. And passionately.

  404. Committed.

  405. To us.

  406. As a people.

  407. Worshiping God.

  408. Together.

  409. Truly.

  410. And fully.

  411. So here's what this means.

  412. Our.

  413. Risen.

  414. King.

  415. Is more than willing.

  416. To drive out.

  417. Any kind of.

  418. Desires.

  419. That would.

  420. Kind of.

  421. Lead to the.

  422. False worship.

  423. Of things that are not God.

  424. He wants to purify us.

  425. He wants to cleanse us.

  426. And you know what the result will be?

  427. Unity.

  428. Unity.

  429. In fullness.

  430. Of joy.

  431. In the worship of God.

  432. Together.

  433. We welcome it.

  434. It's a good.

  435. Holy work.

  436. So what we see happening in.

  437. These two verses.

  438. That God incarnate.

  439. Enters.

  440. Into the temple.

  441. And he purifies it.

  442. His first act.

  443. Is to drive out the insiders.

  444. But his next act.

  445. Is to welcome in the outsiders.

  446. Look at verse 14.

  447. After sending these folks out.

  448. Jesus says.

  449. In the blind and the lame.

  450. Or we read.

  451. In the blind and the lame.

  452. Came to him in the temple.

  453. And he healed him.

  454. Remember the Isaiah 56 reference.

  455. Foreigners.

  456. Foreigners.

  457. Outcasts.

  458. Of Israel.

  459. Are going to be brought.

  460. Into the temple.

  461. And made joyful.

  462. In the worship of God.

  463. Do you know who that is.

  464. In this passage.

  465. It's the blind and the lame.

  466. Jesus has.

  467. Pushed out the.

  468. Insiders.

  469. And now is welcoming.

  470. In the outsiders.

  471. These blind and lame people.

  472. Come to Jesus.

  473. God incarnate.

  474. Emmanuel.

  475. In the temple.

  476. And Jesus.

  477. In his mercy.

  478. In his grace.

  479. He heals them.

  480. He gives them sight.

  481. He makes them whole.

  482. What we see.

  483. Later.

  484. In verse 15.

  485. But when the chief priests.

  486. And scribes.

  487. Saw the wonderful things.

  488. That he did.

  489. If you were there.

  490. Seeing what Jesus was doing.

  491. You would most likely say.

  492. That is amazing.

  493. That is so wonderful.

  494. Look who he's healing.

  495. Look who he's changing.

  496. He's welcoming in the outcasts.

  497. These would be the people.

  498. On the fringes.

  499. These who would be the people.

  500. Who good Jews.

  501. Of that day.

  502. The religious folk.

  503. Would just walk by.

  504. And Jesus is saying.

  505. No, no, no.

  506. You.

  507. You.

  508. You come to me.

  509. You're welcome.

  510. Here.

  511. In this place.

  512. In my presence.

  513. You are the true worshipers.

  514. You who are humble of heart.

  515. Seeking healing for me.

  516. Come into my presence.

  517. God welcomes the outsider.

  518. And we're all outsiders.

  519. And we're all outsiders.

  520. Our sin.

  521. Casts us out.

  522. Of the holy presence of God.

  523. But God in his grace.

  524. Through Jesus.

  525. Brings us in.

  526. And he brings us in.

  527. Together.

  528. So God.

  529. We see happening here.

  530. As God welcomes.

  531. Into his presence.

  532. Those who humbly recognize.

  533. their need.

  534. Now this is the Jesus

  535. whom all of our hearts rise to.

  536. This is the Jesus who welcomes

  537. in, into his presence

  538. the bruised,

  539. the broken, and the overbaked.

  540. The strung

  541. out. The I don't

  542. think I can get through the rest of this day, folks.

  543. Now,

  544. you see,

  545. the temple,

  546. the temple,

  547. the temple,

  548. where God is, Jesus,

  549. he's not saying

  550. you've got to clean up your life before you come to

  551. him. He's saying you come to me

  552. as you are.

  553. I welcome you.

  554. Now maybe this morning

  555. you've come into this building and you're

  556. feeling like an outcast.

  557. Maybe you have it in your mind

  558. it's kind of this lurking thing in the

  559. back of your skull

  560. that Jesus would never

  561. welcome you into his presence

  562. because something you've done

  563. in the past

  564. or something done to you

  565. in the past.

  566. And you're like thinking,

  567. oh,

  568. I'm sure he would be nice

  569. to me,

  570. but he wouldn't really

  571. welcome me in.

  572. Maybe you think of yourself

  573. as too damaged,

  574. too far gone.

  575. Maybe you think of yourself

  576. as too broken

  577. to be fixed.

  578. Maybe you think

  579. that you're too

  580. lame to be helped.

  581. Maybe you have this deep

  582. and ongoing sense

  583. that as I heard

  584. one man quote

  585. this past week

  586. that God

  587. has this ongoing

  588. mild disgust

  589. for me.

  590. Maybe that's you.

  591. Maybe you feel like

  592. you're the outcast.

  593. Maybe you have this

  594. kind of hidden

  595. lameness of soul.

  596. Maybe you have had this

  597. insatiable addiction

  598. and you have burned

  599. so many bridges

  600. in your life.

  601. You're just so ashamed.

  602. You're like,

  603. Jesus would never

  604. welcome me in.

  605. You think that if Jesus

  606. laid his eyes on you,

  607. you would see

  608. in his eyes

  609. this kindling

  610. of rage to you

  611. for what you have done

  612. and the mess

  613. that you've made

  614. and he would take you

  615. by the collar

  616. and throw you out

  617. of his presence.

  618. Maybe that's what

  619. you're thinking.

  620. Oh, I've got good news

  621. for you.

  622. Jesus is not that way

  623. towards those

  624. who are humble.

  625. Jesus is not that way

  626. towards people

  627. who come to him

  628. looking for healing.

  629. There's not one record

  630. of someone

  631. in our Bibles

  632. of coming to Jesus

  633. who was humble,

  634. honest need,

  635. looking for help

  636. and Jesus says,

  637. oh, I've got to get

  638. to Starbucks.

  639. I'm sorry.

  640. I can't help you right now.

  641. Not once.

  642. What I love about this verse

  643. is that these blind

  644. and the lame

  645. who came to Jesus

  646. were not told.

  647. How did the blind folk

  648. find their way in?

  649. Did they grope their way

  650. up through the colonnade

  651. and stairs

  652. into the outer courts

  653. and find Jesus?

  654. Were they led

  655. by the hand to Jesus?

  656. We're not told.

  657. Here's what we know.

  658. They walked in blind.

  659. They walked out seeing

  660. because they encountered Jesus.

  661. And the lame,

  662. we're not told

  663. what kind of lame.

  664. Did they have

  665. some kind of palsy?

  666. Were they able to walk?

  667. Were they carried in?

  668. We're not told.

  669. But we do know

  670. when they encountered Jesus

  671. and they were healed,

  672. they strided out

  673. of the temple,

  674. made whole.

  675. That's what Jesus

  676. is able to do then.

  677. That's what he's able

  678. to do now.

  679. And here's what Jesus

  680. does for sinners today.

  681. You see,

  682. within four days

  683. of Jesus saying this,

  684. standing in the temple,

  685. he would be hanging

  686. on a Roman cross

  687. outside the walls

  688. of Jerusalem.

  689. The incarnate king

  690. now standing

  691. in the temple

  692. who welcomes

  693. outsiders

  694. and heals them,

  695. he will be cast

  696. out

  697. as a sinner.

  698. all in order

  699. to bring sinners

  700. into a deep

  701. and abiding

  702. and vital

  703. relationship

  704. with the one true God.

  705. He was crucified

  706. outside the gate.

  707. But he's alive.

  708. He's alive today

  709. and he's alive

  710. and he's as full

  711. of mercy

  712. and grace

  713. as he was

  714. in the temple

  715. millennia ago

  716. and he welcomes

  717. all and any

  718. that would come

  719. to him.

  720. He's alive

  721. and he's full

  722. of mercy

  723. and he welcomes

  724. you into his presence.

  725. He welcomes

  726. in the outsiders

  727. and we're all

  728. outsiders.

  729. So we've seen

  730. Jesus drive out

  731. the insiders

  732. and welcome

  733. in the outsiders

  734. and now verse 15

  735. Matthew points us

  736. to two other groups

  737. of people

  738. who were there.

  739. And if there's

  740. a contrast

  741. between the insiders

  742. being driven out

  743. and the outsiders

  744. being welcomed in

  745. there's another contrast

  746. between these

  747. two groups

  748. of people.

  749. Read with me.

  750. Verse 15

  751. But when the chief

  752. priests and the scribes

  753. saw the wonderful

  754. things that he did

  755. and the children

  756. crying out

  757. in the temple

  758. Hosanna to the

  759. son of David.

  760. Do you see that?

  761. There were children

  762. there.

  763. There were children

  764. in the temple.

  765. There were children

  766. in these outer courts

  767. and they're seeing

  768. everything that's going on.

  769. And their response

  770. to these wonderful

  771. things is what?

  772. Praise.

  773. Praise to Jesus

  774. in the temple.

  775. They were not

  776. indifferent to Jesus.

  777. They were crying

  778. out to him

  779. Hosanna

  780. to the son of David.

  781. It's a messianic

  782. title reference.

  783. They're saying

  784. praise to you

  785. Messiah King.

  786. We see what's

  787. going on.

  788. We recognize you.

  789. Praise to you.

  790. This is the same thing

  791. that the crowds

  792. were proclaiming

  793. to Jesus.

  794. Those Galilean crowds

  795. that had followed

  796. Jesus down

  797. as he's entering

  798. into Jerusalem.

  799. They're singing

  800. Hosanna to the

  801. highest.

  802. Hosanna to the

  803. son of David.

  804. These boys

  805. who are in the

  806. temple

  807. have picked up

  808. that same thing.

  809. It's what the two

  810. blind men said

  811. in Bethany.

  812. Son of David

  813. have mercy on us.

  814. This is the king

  815. and he's being

  816. recognized by kids.

  817. From our study

  818. of Matthew

  819. we know that

  820. children were often

  821. looked down upon.

  822. I mean in Matthew

  823. 19 the disciples

  824. were like

  825. parents don't bring

  826. your children to

  827. Jesus.

  828. He doesn't have

  829. time for them.

  830. And Jesus is like

  831. what are you guys

  832. talking about?

  833. Bring them to me

  834. and he blesses them.

  835. Jesus in Matthew

  836. 18 sets a child

  837. before his disciples

  838. and says whoever

  839. humbles himself

  840. like this child

  841. is the greatest

  842. in the kingdom

  843. of heaven.

  844. So when we read

  845. these children

  846. in the temple

  847. who are worshiping

  848. Jesus after they

  849. see him welcoming

  850. in the outsiders

  851. and healing him

  852. man not only did it

  853. happen

  854. it's an example

  855. for us.

  856. We respond

  857. in praise

  858. when we become

  859. aware that God

  860. has healed

  861. another outsider.

  862. these children

  863. model for us

  864. the praise

  865. to be given

  866. to Jesus

  867. when he

  868. shows his mercy

  869. and grace

  870. to another one

  871. who doesn't

  872. deserve it.

  873. I mean we're

  874. all outsiders

  875. to whom the

  876. risen Christ

  877. has shown mercy

  878. and grace

  879. and when we

  880. see it happen

  881. our response

  882. says Hosanna

  883. to the son

  884. of David

  885. God be praised.

  886. But there's not

  887. just praise

  888. going on.

  889. Matthew points

  890. to another

  891. contrasting group

  892. of men

  893. not children

  894. but men

  895. who are

  896. at the temple

  897. and who have

  898. observed all

  899. that's been

  900. going on.

  901. But when the

  902. chief priests

  903. and scribes

  904. saw the wonderful

  905. things that he did

  906. the healing

  907. of these outsiders

  908. and when these

  909. chief priests

  910. saw the children

  911. crying out

  912. in the temple

  913. Hosanna to the

  914. son of David

  915. when they heard

  916. that they were

  917. indignant.

  918. They were ticked

  919. off.

  920. They were angry.

  921. These were the

  922. religious leaders

  923. of Israel

  924. in Jerusalem.

  925. These are the guys

  926. that would have

  927. had the offices

  928. in the temple.

  929. These are the ones

  930. that would have

  931. given the initial

  932. okay for these

  933. people to come

  934. in to the

  935. outer courts

  936. and start

  937. selling stuff.

  938. We don't know

  939. if there was

  940. a stall fee

  941. but they would

  942. have okayed it.

  943. These are the guys

  944. who would have

  945. made it difficult

  946. for the blind

  947. and the lame

  948. to even enter

  949. the temple.

  950. These are the guys

  951. who were supposed

  952. to be shepherding

  953. God's people

  954. and in walks

  955. the incarnate king

  956. into the temple

  957. and they're mad

  958. because kids

  959. are saying

  960. he's the Messiah.

  961. What they should

  962. have been doing

  963. is joining in praise

  964. and what they end

  965. up doing

  966. is criticizing.

  967. You see

  968. of this story

  969. these men

  970. are the ones

  971. who are the most

  972. blind of all.

  973. they don't

  974. recognize

  975. who's in their

  976. midst

  977. and they're

  978. so angry

  979. because these

  980. children

  981. are calling

  982. Jesus the Messiah.

  983. They say to

  984. Jesus in verse

  985. 16

  986. do you not

  987. hear what

  988. these guys

  989. are saying?

  990. It's not a

  991. question.

  992. They're telling

  993. him to shut

  994. them up.

  995. These children

  996. are praising

  997. you Jesus

  998. they're calling

  999. you the Messiah

  1000. would you

  1001. please shut

  1002. them up?

  1003. They shouldn't

  1004. be doing

  1005. this.

  1006. Do you hear

  1007. what they're

  1008. saying?

  1009. So we have

  1010. this contrast

  1011. between these

  1012. children praising

  1013. Jesus and

  1014. these chief

  1015. priests and

  1016. scribes who

  1017. are trying to

  1018. shut up the

  1019. praise of Jesus

  1020. to hinder the

  1021. praise of Jesus.

  1022. now look at

  1023. verse 16

  1024. and Jesus

  1025. response.

  1026. They say do

  1027. you hear what

  1028. these these are

  1029. saying and

  1030. Jesus says to

  1031. them oh yeah

  1032. I hear it.

  1033. Yes.

  1034. Yes I hear it.

  1035. I hear it loud

  1036. and clear.

  1037. Yes.

  1038. And then he

  1039. says to them

  1040. have you not

  1041. heard out of

  1042. the mouths of

  1043. infants and

  1044. nursing babes

  1045. you have

  1046. prepared praise.

  1047. Jesus is

  1048. quoting Psalm

  1049. 8 too.

  1050. It's it's the

  1051. psalm that we

  1052. started the

  1053. service with.

  1054. It's it's that

  1055. psalm that in

  1056. verse 1 and

  1057. verse 9 the

  1058. first verse and

  1059. the last verse

  1060. it's oh Lord

  1061. our Lord how

  1062. majestic is your

  1063. name in all the

  1064. earth.

  1065. It's a psalm of

  1066. praise to God

  1067. and and Jesus is

  1068. using it very

  1069. specifically.

  1070. He's saying these

  1071. children who are

  1072. praising me they're

  1073. the fulfillment of

  1074. that.

  1075. They should be

  1076. praising.

  1077. And and he's

  1078. also saying they're

  1079. praising me.

  1080. He's claiming to

  1081. be the God of

  1082. Psalm 8 too.

  1083. He's he's saying

  1084. their praise of

  1085. me is right.

  1086. But you know

  1087. what I also

  1088. saying Psalm 8

  1089. 2 is it's it's a

  1090. way in which Jesus

  1091. is vindicated.

  1092. In Psalm 8 2 we

  1093. read this.

  1094. Let me find it.

  1095. We read this.

  1096. Out of the mouth

  1097. of infants and

  1098. nursing babes you

  1099. have prepared

  1100. praise and what

  1101. follows is in the

  1102. presence of your

  1103. enemies.

  1104. So what's going on

  1105. here is this.

  1106. Jesus in the face

  1107. of his enemies the

  1108. chief scribes and

  1109. the chief priests and

  1110. the scribes he's

  1111. being praised by

  1112. these kids in the

  1113. temple and what

  1114. Jesus is saying is

  1115. oh yeah this is

  1116. fulfillment.

  1117. These children are

  1118. vindicating me and

1119. who I am and me

  1120. being God incarnate in

  1121. the temple right now

  1122. opening up to

  1123. outsiders vindicated.

  1124. the question is why

  1125. aren't the chief

  1126. priests and scribes

  1127. praising Jesus along

  1128. with these kids and

  1129. the answer to that

  1130. question is their

  1131. hearts were hard.

  1132. They were hardened.

  1133. They did not believe

1134. him to be the Christ.

  1135. They were blinded by

  1136. their own sinful

  1137. pride.

  1138. They don't have eyes

1139. to see or to hear and

1140. this is what Jesus was

1141. getting at in Luke 19.

  1142. He's coming into the

1143. city and he says he

1144. weeps and he says you

  1145. haven't recognized the

  1146. day of your visitation.

  1147. They don't recognize

  1148. him.

  1149. They don't recognize

  1150. him.

1151. So in verse 17 after

  1152. quoting Psalm 8 Jesus

  1153. leaves the temple and

  1154. he lodges in Bethany

  1155. most likely with his

  1156. friends Mary, Martha,

  1157. and Lazarus.

  1158. this passage we've seen

  1159. God incarnate walk into

1160. the temple and when he

1161. walks in he drives out

  1162. the insiders and then

  1163. he welcomes in the

  1164. outsiders and then he

  1165. receives the praise of

  1166. kids and then he

  1167. receives the criticism

  1168. of these religious

  1169. leaders and he says

  1170. hey these kids praise

  1171. vindicate me.

1172. I'm God in the flesh in

  1173. the temple right now.

  1174. This passage is all

  1175. about Jesus.

  1176. This passage is all

1177. about Jesus who is God

  1178. incarnate in his temple

1179. and how to respond to

  1180. him.

1181. And this morning I want

1182. to remind you and point

1183. you to three things of

  1184. how we're going to

  1185. respond to this.

  1186. the first is this.

  1187. We're all outsiders.

  1188. We're all outsiders in

1189. need of God's grace to

1190. be brought us into a

  1191. vital relationship with

  1192. God.

  1193. So regardless of the

  1194. neighborhood you live in,

  1195. regardless if you're a

  1196. guy or a gal,

  1197. regardless of your skin

  1198. color or your education

  1199. level or your annual

  1200. income or your employment

  1201. status, regardless of it

  1202. all, we're all outsiders

1203. because of our sin and

1204. we need to be brought in

  1205. by God's grace through

  1206. Jesus.

  1207. We're all outsiders.

  1208. By his grace.

1209. And when he brings us

  1210. into a living relationship

1211. with him, he builds us

  1212. into his living temple,

  1213. the church.

1214. So the first thing that

1215. we need to remember is

  1216. we're all outsiders in

  1217. need of God's grace.

  1218. The second is this.

  1219. Jesus takes his rightful

  1220. place.

1221. It was right for Jesus

1222. to stand in the temple

  1223. and be praised by

  1224. children.

  1225. It was right.

  1226. Today, do you recognize

  1227. the rightful place Jesus

1228. has not only in your life

  1229. but in our church?

  1230. He's the incarnate risen

  1231. king.

1232. And he's not going to

  1233. tolerate in us

  1234. any profaning of the

  1235. worship due his name.

1236. And so he's going to do

1237. and continue to do a good,

1238. holy, gracious work in us

  1239. to unite us together

1240. in the praise of his

  1241. great name.

  1242. It's his rightful place.

1243. So in light of that, I want

1244. to ask you to do something

  1245. this week.

1246. I want to ask you to

  1247. go before the Lord

  1248. with this question.

1249. Would you ask the risen

  1250. Christ to purify your

1251. heart so that he may

  1252. have the rightful place

1253. not only in your heart

  1254. but in our church?

  1255. That he would take

  1256. front and center.

1257. That he would be the one

1258. in whom all of our praise

  1259. is directed.

  1260. Would you join me

  1261. this week

  1262. in asking God

  1263. to do a work

  1264. in which he purifies

  1265. your heart

  1266. to worship him?

  1267. Jesus

  1268. takes his rightful place.

  1269. The third and last

  1270. point of application

1271. has to do with what

1272. happens here on a Sunday

  1273. morning when we sing

  1274. together.

  1275. very specific.

  1276. We're not to hinder

  1277. each other's praise

  1278. of Jesus.

  1279. We're not to hinder

  1280. each other's praise.

  1281. Those children who

  1282. cried out Hosanna

1283. to the son of David,

  1284. they were right.

  1285. And when the chief

  1286. priest told Jesus

  1287. to essentially shut

  1288. him up, Jesus says,

  1289. no.

  1290. Doesn't hinder

  1291. their praise.

1292. it was right for them

  1293. to praise him.

  1294. So let's apply this

  1295. to when we sing

  1296. together in this room

  1297. on a Sunday morning.

1298. What's got to be going

  1299. on in your heart

  1300. when we sing together?

  1301. When we're standing up

1302. and someone next to you

  1303. raises their hands

  1304. to worship

1305. and this is new to you,

  1306. don't be distracted

  1307. by that.

  1308. Don't feel threatened

  1309. by that.

  1310. rejoice in that.

  1311. Give this person

  1312. the benefit

  1313. of any doubt

  1314. that they are

  1315. worshiping Jesus

  1316. at that moment.

  1317. And so,

  1318. when you realize that,

  1319. you can return

  1320. to your rejoicing

  1321. of Jesus.

  1322. So if someone's

  1323. raising their hand

  1324. next to you,

  1325. rejoice.

  1326. Rejoice.

  1327. Or let's say

1328. that someone next to you

  1329. were singing

  1330. a song

  1331. and they begin

  1332. to weep

  1333. and that weeping

  1334. goes from a quiet

  1335. weeping

  1336. into a loud

  1337. weeping

  1338. and you find yourself

  1339. a little distracted,

  1340. you find yourself

  1341. a little uncomfortable

  1342. with the degree

  1343. of emotion

  1344. and you're like,

  1345. okay,

  1346. what's going on?

  1347. Maybe someone

  1348. should show

  1349. this person out!

  1350. We're not going

  1351. to do that.

  1352. When someone

  1353. is weeping

  1354. or wailing

  1355. because they're

  1356. coming to the presence

  1357. of God

  1358. and they're remembering

  1359. they're an outsider

  1360. and He's welcomed

  1361. them in,

  1362. we rejoice.

  1363. We say,

  1364. oh God,

  1365. thank you

  1366. for ministering

  1367. to my brother

  1368. and my sister

  1369. and I'm an outsider

  1370. too!

  1371. We rejoice.

  1372. We rejoice.

  1373. So if this were

  1374. to happen,

  1375. don't be distracted.

  1376. Don't feel

  1377. threatened by that.

  1378. It may be new

  1379. to you.

  1380. That's okay.

  1381. Let's give them

  1382. the benefit

  1383. of the doubt

  1384. and say,

  1385. God is meeting

  1386. them

  1387. and we rejoice

  1388. together.

  1389. Let's not hinder

  1390. each other's praise.

  1391. Finally,

  1392. if we're singing

  1393. and someone

  1394. kind of goes

  1395. off script

  1396. and we're singing

  1397. rejoice,

  1398. rejoice

  1399. and someone

  1400. goes,

  1401. oh,

  1402. hallelujah,

  1403. praise be to

  1404. God.

  1405. Thank you,

  1406. Lord.

  1407. We're not

  1408. going to cross

  1409. the hands

  1410. of our heart

  1411. and say,

  1412. what's going

  1413. on?

  1414. We're going

  1415. to rejoice

  1416. with them.

  1417. We're going

  1418. to celebrate

  1419. with them.

  1420. We're going

  1421. to trust

  1422. that,

  1423. yes,

  1424. they too

  1425. are being

  1426. ministered

  1427. to by God

  1428. and they're

  1429. giving voice

  1430. to praise

  1431. in their hearts

  1432. and we

  1433. rejoice

  1434. with them.

  1435. What we're

  1436. not to do

  1437. is to do

  1438. what the chief

  1439. priests

  1440. and the scribes

  1441. do and try

  1442. to squelch

  1443. the true

  1444. and right

  1445. worship

  1446. of Jesus.

  1447. We're not

  1448. going to do

  1449. that.

  1450. So whether

  1451. it's raising

  1452. hands,

  1453. whether it's

  1454. weeping,

  1455. whether it's

  1456. spontaneous

  1457. words of

  1458. praise,

  1459. we join

  1460. in.

  1461. We rejoice

  1462. in that.

  1463. So what

  1464. must be

  1465. going on

  1466. in your

  1467. heart

  1468. so that

  1469. you can

  1470. rejoice

  1471. with those

  1472. who rejoice

  1473. even when

  1474. their rejoicing

  1475. makes you

  1476. uncomfortable?

  1477. What must

  1478. be going

  1479. on?

  1480. Remember

  1481. who they're

  1482. praising.

  1483. It's the

  1484. incarnate God

  1485. that walked

  1486. in the temple

  1487. and now

  1488. is reigning

  1489. on high.

  1490. And remember

  1491. you too

  1492. were an

  1493. outsider

  1494. and you

  1495. too

  1496. have

  1497. experienced

  1498. a wonderful

  1499. thing

  1500. from Jesus.

  1501. You too

  1502. were shown

  1503. great grace.

  1504. In conclusion

  1505. I just want

  1506. to remind

  1507. you of

  1508. this.

  1509. There's

  1510. going to

  1511. come a

  1512. day when

  1513. God gathers

  1514. all of his

  1515. people from

  1516. every tribe,

  1517. tongue,

  1518. and nation

  1519. and we

  1520. gather

  1521. around him.

  1522. And what

  1523. Revelation

  1524. 21 says

  1525. when the

  1526. new

  1527. Jerusalem

  1528. comes

  1529. down

  1530. there's

  1531. no

  1532. more

  1533. temple.

  1534. Do you

  1535. know why?

  1536. God

  1537. and the

  1538. lamb

  1539. are the

  1540. temple.

  1541. And we're

  1542. going to

  1543. give him

  1544. praise

  1545. and glory

  1546. together.

  1547. And there's

  1548. going to be

  1549. a lot of

  1550. different

  1551. people and

  1552. there's

  1553. going to

  1554. be a lot

  1555. of different

  1556. things going

  1557. on.

  1558. But he

  1559. receives

  1560. it all.

  1561. Because he

  1562. alone is

  1563. worthy.

  1564. he's

  1565. our

  1566. great

  1567. God.

  1568. Let's

  1569. pray.

  1570. Lord

  1571. Jesus,

  1572. we do

  1573. thank you

  1574. so much

  1575. for this

  1576. passage in

  1577. our Bibles

  1578. where we

  1579. see you

  1580. doing

  1581. something

  1582. that is

  1583. striking.

  1584. You're

  1585. wonderful.

  1586. You're

  1587. amazing and

  1588. you're

  1589. glorious.

  1590. Lord

  1591. Jesus,

  1592. would you

  1593. form in

  1594. us your

  1595. people,

  1596. a people

  1597. united in

  1598. true and

  1599. full praise

  1600. of you and

  1601. we welcome

  1602. rejoicing of

  1603. your name.

  1604. Lord,

  1605. would you

  1606. grow us,

  1607. mature us

  1608. and unite

  1609. us.

  1610. Above all,

  1611. Lord Jesus,

  1612. we want

  1613. your name

  1614. exalted.

  1615. Hosanna

  1616. to the

  1617. Son of

  1618. David.

  1619. It's

  1620. your name

  1621. we pray.

  1622. Amen.
