  1. Welcome to Christ the King Church again.

  2. My name is Billy Nye. I'm one of the pastors here.

  3. It's my privilege to bring God's Word to you.

  4. Children, you may be dismissed.

  5. One of these days I'll get that.

  6. Mike has the advantage of having a little bit more of the rhythm.

  7. I like to learn the rhythm better.

  8. If you'd open your Bibles with me to Matthew 24.

  9. Matthew 24.

  10. Anybody like war movies?

  11. I like war movies.

  12. Not shoot them up in blood and guts as much,

  13. but one of my favorites is a movie called Master and Commander.

  14. Anybody seen it?

  15. It's a great, great movie.

  16. It's a classic tale of the HMS Surprise,

  17. a British man of war,

  18. and its mission is during the Napoleonic Wars, 1812,

  19. and its mission is to pursue an elusive French warship.

  20. We got it, we got it.

  21. Building suspense.

  22. Its mission is to pursue an elusive French warship

  23. around the Southern Hemisphere,

  24. and it's a wonderful tale.

  25. And one of the most memorable of the weather-beaten

  26. and war-hardened crew of this fine vessel

  27. is Abel Seaman Joe Place.

  28. And probably one of the most memorable things

  29. about Abel Seaman Joe Place

  30. is what's tattooed on his fingers.

  31. Right across his leathery phalanges

  32. are the letters H-O-L-D-F-A-S-T.

  33. Hold fast.

  34. Hold fast.

  35. It's a command.

  36. It's an appropriate command for a seaman.

  37. Hold that rope fast, sailor,

  38. or your sail is compromised.

  39. Hold fast at your station,

  40. or you betray your comrades.

  41. Hold fast until you reach your desired haven.

  42. Brothers and sisters,

  43. in the passage we're going to look at this morning

  44. in Matthew 24,

  45. our Lord Jesus,

  46. our Master and Commander,

  47. is telling us, His people,

  48. to hold fast.

  49. Hold fast.

  50. Endure.

  51. Be faithful.

  52. Until He comes.

  53. In fact, the next several Sundays

  54. before the Advent season,

  55. as a church,

  56. in this month to come,

  57. we're going to be seeing

  58. what Matthew 24 and 25

  59. tell us about that day.

  60. On that day.

  61. That's where our eyes should be fixed.

  62. And this is Jesus telling His people

  63. how to live until that day.

  64. So we're kicking off

  65. this little mini-series today.

  66. Today.

  67. These two chapters

  68. are often referred to

  69. as the Olivet Discourse,

  70. named after the place

  71. where Jesus gave this teaching,

  72. which is the Mount of Olives,

  73. a little hill

  74. just to the east

  75. of the city of Jerusalem.

  76. It is the fifth

  77. and final

  78. large block

  79. of teaching

  80. in the book of Matthew,

  81. and that's not on accident.

  82. Matthew designed

  83. his gospel

  84. to be a

  85. miniature

  86. of the five books

  87. of the Torah

  88. representing Jesus

  89. as the new Moses.

  90. And this is his fifth

  91. and final address

  92. to his disciples

  93. before his crucifixion.

  94. There's a lot going on

  95. in these chapters,

  96. but the emphasis

  97. is unmistakable.

  98. Hold fast.

  99. Hold fast.

  100. Live faithfully

  101. until the end,

  102. until He comes.

  103. Live faithfully

  104. in the last days.

  105. days.

  106. Now maybe you might

  107. hear that phrase,

  108. the last days,

  109. and you might get

  110. a little bit of a

  111. queasy feeling

  112. in your tummy.

  113. I remember being

  114. about eight years old,

  115. and a prophecy specialist

  116. came to my church

  117. and gave some pretty fiery

  118. and scary sermons

  119. about how all these

  120. recent headlines

  121. were fulfilling prophecies

  122. that were pointing

  123. to the fact that

  124. the rapture was happening

  125. very soon.

  126. I was nervous.

  127. I don't know,

  128. like, living in the last days,

  129. that's kind of freaky.

  130. But if that's you,

  131. Jesus doesn't want you

  132. to be nervous.

  133. Maybe you hear that phrase,

  134. the last days,

  135. and you get excited.

  136. You love studying eschatology.

  137. Eschatology is a fancy word

  138. for the study of the end times

  139. or the last days.

  140. This topic is fascinating.

  141. The Bible has a lot

  142. to say about it,

  143. but it can also be

  144. a lightning rod

  145. for Christian disagreement

  146. and division.

  147. Opinions can be held

  148. very strongly

  149. on the specifics

  150. of what this interpretation

  151. of this passage might mean.

  152. But Jesus,

  153. just as he doesn't want us

  154. to be nervous,

  155. he doesn't want us

  156. to be divided either.

  157. He wants us

  158. to eagerly anticipate

  159. his return

  160. and be faithful

  161. in the meantime.

  162. And that's what

  163. we're going to hear today.

  164. This passage is in the Bible

  165. to tell us

  166. that Jesus wants us

  167. to hold fast.

  168. Jesus is our risen

  169. and returning king

  170. and he is expecting us,

  171. his people,

  172. to hold fast

  173. through the prolonged

  174. and painful

  175. last days

  176. until he comes.

  177. He is calling us,

  178. his church,

  179. to live faithfully for him

  180. in a prolonged season

  181. of waiting for him

  182. to return.

  183. And the Bible calls

  184. that period

  185. the last days.

  186. So let's walk

  187. through this passage together.

  188. Let's unpack

  189. what Jesus was saying

  190. then to his disciples

  191. and what he is saying

  192. now to us today.

  193. And as we go,

  194. I want us to be thinking

  195. in terms of

  196. four don't be's

  197. and one be.

  198. Four don't be's

  199. and one be.

  200. Jesus is going to give us

  201. four calls.

  202. Don't be

  203. and be.

  204. So here we go.

  205. The first don't be

  206. is found in the first two verses.

  207. Sorry, first three verses.

  208. Let me read them

  209. aloud.

  210. This is God's word.

  211. Jesus left the temple

  212. and was going away

  213. when his disciples

  214. came to point out to him

  215. the buildings of the temple.

  216. But he said to them,

  217. you see all these,

  218. do you not?

  219. Truly I say to you,

  220. there will not be left here

  221. one stone upon another

  222. that will not be

  223. thrown down.

  224. And as he sat

  225. on the Mount of Olives,

  226. the disciples came to him

  227. privately saying,

  228. tell us,

  229. when will these things be

  230. and what will be

  231. the sign of your coming

  232. and the end

  233. of the age?

  234. Jesus is giving us

  235. the first don't be.

  236. It's this.

  237. Don't be distracted.

  238. distracted.

  239. Don't be distracted.

  240. The first thing you notice

  241. in these verses

  242. is that Jesus

  243. left the temple.

  244. This is significant.

  245. If we look back

  246. to the last few verses

  247. of chapter 23,

  248. we're going to see

  249. Jesus promising

  250. judgment on Jerusalem

  251. because they rejected

  252. him as Messiah.

  253. But he's pronouncing

  254. judgment through tears.

  255. He's weeping

  256. in the last few verses

  257. of chapter 23.

  258. He's weeping

  259. for the rejection

  260. of his people,

  261. of him.

  262. And as he begins

  263. to walk away,

  264. his symbolic leaving

  265. of the temple

  266. is pointing

  267. to his rejection

  268. of what the temple

  269. stood for.

  270. An empty shell

  271. of religion

  272. that is preoccupied

  273. with itself

  274. and not

  275. with what God

  276. has sent them

  277. as the true

  278. and living presence

  279. of God among them.

  280. No longer in a place,

  281. no longer in a building,

  282. but in a person.

  283. The new temple

  284. of God

  285. is walking away

  286. from the old temple

  287. of God.

  288. Jesus is now

  289. the full presence

  290. of God

  291. with his people,

  292. which the old temple

  293. used to symbolize.

  294. But now,

  295. he is with his people.

  296. He is God

  297. with us.

  298. And now,

  299. he is walking away

  300. from that empty shell

  301. that, as one author

  302. put it,

  303. has no future

  304. except destruction.

  305. So as Jesus

  306. turns his back

  307. on the temple,

  308. his disciples

  309. keep looking at it.

  310. They draw his attention

  311. to its significance,

  312. to its magnificence.

  313. And no wonder,

  314. it was the pride

  315. and joy

  316. of every Jew

  317. of the day.

  318. It was a massive structure.

  319. Where it wasn't

  320. overlaid with gold,

  321. it was coated

  322. with white marble.

  323. You couldn't look

  324. at this building.

  325. It was glorious,

  326. especially when

  327. the sun hit it.

  328. Notice what Jesus

  329. says in verse 2.

  330. Basically,

  331. he's saying,

  332. you see these buildings?

  333. Yes,

  334. they're beautiful,

  335. but don't let

  336. this impressive

  337. flashiness

  338. distract you.

  339. The current age

  340. is fundamentally

  341. opposed to me

  342. and to my kingdom.

  343. Now you see it,

  344. but soon and very soon

  345. you won't.

  346. Adjust your vision

  347. to God's

  348. eternal perspective.

  349. Physically,

  350. this edifice

  351. is beautiful,

  352. but it is destined

  353. for judgment

  354. and destruction.

  355. All these magnificent

  356. stones will be

  357. toppled.

  358. Not one will be

  359. left on top

  360. of another.

  361. And by the way,

  362. Jesus was spot on here.

  363. About 40 years later,

  364. the Jews rebelled

  365. against Rome

  366. and the Emperor

  367. Titus personally

  368. came over

  369. with a massive army

  370. and leveled the city,

  371. including the temple,

  372. in 70 AD.

  373. A day of reckoning

  374. was drawing near.

  375. It's on the horizon.

  376. And Jesus is asking

  377. his disciples,

  378. do you see it?

  379. And it was.

  380. It was on the horizon

  381. for the Jews

  382. 40 years later,

  383. as it is also

  384. for us.

  385. As we'll see more clearly

  386. in the next few weeks,

  387. the destruction of Jerusalem

  388. in AD 70

  389. serves as a forerunner,

  390. a taste,

  391. a sample

  392. of the ultimate

  393. eternal judgment

  394. that is to come

  395. upon the whole world.

  396. In verse 3,

  397. his disciples

  398. come to him

  399. and ask him

  400. a question.

  401. And they ask it

  402. from their particular

  403. perspective.

  404. We have to keep that

  405. in mind as we look

  406. at this.

  407. They come to him

  408. and they ask him,

  409. when will these things,

  410. that is the destruction

  411. of Jerusalem,

  412. be?

  413. And then,

  414. what will be the sign

  415. of your coming

  416. and the end of the age?

  417. Three things,

  418. the destruction

  419. of Jerusalem,

  420. Jesus' coming,

  421. and the end of the age.

  422. The disciples see those

  423. as a whole end times package.

  424. They're looking

  425. at the horizon

  426. Jesus has pointed them to,

  427. telling them not to be

  428. distracted with the current age.

  429. And they're like,

  430. okay,

  431. when is that going

  432. to happen?

  433. They see those things

  434. tied together.

  435. They can't separate out

  436. the destruction

  437. of Jerusalem

  438. from the end of the world

  439. from Jesus'

  440. triumphant return.

  441. If you've ever driven west

  442. to the Rocky Mountains,

  443. as you're driving,

  444. you start to see mountains.

  445. They're on the horizon.

  446. But it's hard to distinguish

  447. the nearer foothills

  448. from the further out

  449. mountain snow-capped peaks.

  450. But as you get closer,

  451. you begin to draw near

  452. and you see distance

  453. between the smaller

  454. and nearer foothills.

  455. There are mountains,

  456. but they're foothills

  457. compared to the massive

  458. peaks beyond.

  459. For the disciples,

  460. as Jesus is pointing them

  461. along the same line of sight

  462. on the horizon,

  463. it's hard for them

  464. to distinguish

  465. the near event,

  466. the destruction of Jerusalem,

  467. judgment,

  468. from the far event,

  469. the end of the age.

  470. They perceive them

  471. as the same event.

  472. But as Jesus is going

  473. to make pretty clear

  474. in the rest of the package,

  475. he's going to start

  476. to separate those two out.

  477. They're a lot alike

  478. and they're along

  479. the same line of sight.

  480. They're both judgment,

  481. but one is temporary

  482. and close

  483. and the other is eternal

  484. and further away.

  485. But both are judgment.

  486. And Jesus wants

  487. his disciples

  488. now

  489. to take this coming day

  490. of reckoning

  491. very seriously.

  492. For at that time,

  493. it was the destruction

  494. of Jerusalem

  495. that was on its way

  496. very quickly.

  497. For us,

  498. it is the end of the age

  499. that is on its way

  500. just as quickly.

  501. For the original readers

  502. of Matthew,

  503. the historical events

  504. of the destruction

  505. of Jerusalem

  506. were very close

  507. within a decade or so

  508. and they desperately

  509. needed to listen

  510. to what Jesus had to say

  511. so that they could avoid

  512. the coming judgment.

  513. And for us,

  514. the events of the coming

  515. eternal judgment

  516. that is on the horizon

  517. is also close.

  518. Jesus wants our attention

  519. on that day.

  520. He doesn't want us

  521. to be distracted.

  522. The reformer,

  523. Martin Luther,

  524. is often credited

  525. with saying,

  526. there are only two days

  527. on my calendar.

  528. Today

  529. and that day.

  530. Jesus wants

  531. to put his hands

  532. on our shoulders

  533. and turn us

  534. to face the light

  535. of that day.

  536. So let's allow

  537. Jesus' words

  538. to kind of shock

  539. our system

  540. into the right frame

  541. of mind

  542. and live in light

  543. of eternity.

  544. Don't be distracted

  545. with the here and now.

  546. Focus on that day.

  547. He is coming.

  548. Soon.

  549. The second don't be

  550. is found

  551. in the beginning

  552. of Jesus' response

  553. in verses 4 and 5.

  554. Let's look at them together.

  555. Jesus answers

  556. their question.

  557. He says,

  558. See that no one

  559. leads you astray.

  560. For many will come

  561. in my name

  562. saying,

  563. I am the Christ

  564. and they will lead

  565. many astray.

  566. You can probably guess

  567. what the first,

  568. the second,

  569. first,

  570. sorry,

  571. second,

  572. don't be is,

  573. don't be led astray.

  574. Don't be led astray.

  575. Don't you just love it

  576. when you ask somebody

  577. a question

  578. and they totally

  579. don't give you

  580. the answer

  581. they're looking for?

  582. That's what Jesus

  583. just did for his disciples.

  584. They are looking

  585. for a very specific answer.

  586. When and what sign?

  587. When is this happening

  588. and how are we going

  589. to know when it's

  590. about to happen?

  591. But Jesus does not

  592. answer that question.

  593. He says,

  594. Don't be led astray.

  595. Don't let anyone

  596. deceive you.

  597. Now Jesus is not

  598. trying to annoy them

  599. by giving them

  600. the answer

  601. they're not looking for.

  602. He's trying to set

  603. their priorities straight.

  604. They don't need

  605. to be concerned

  606. about timing.

  607. That is the father's business.

  608. They need to be focused

  609. on how to live

  610. while he's away.

  611. And Jesus'

  612. utmost concern

  613. is for their

  614. unswerving devotion

  615. to him

  616. and him

  617. only.

  618. There are many

  619. imposters

  620. and deceivers

  621. that are coming,

  622. he says.

  623. They're going to claim

  624. an intimate connection

  625. with me.

  626. They're going to claim

  627. that I am him

  628. or that they are

  629. associated with me

  630. closely.

  631. They'll say,

  632. I am the Christ.

  633. If you jump down

  634. to verse 11,

  635. Jesus circles back

  636. to this theme

  637. and says,

  638. Many false prophets

  639. will rise

  640. and lead many

  641. astray.

  642. So we've got

  643. Christ imposters,

  644. people coming

  645. in Christ's name

  646. and we also have

  647. false teachers,

  648. false prophets.

  649. And notice the

  650. repetition of the

  651. word many.

  652. Many will come

  653. and lead many

  654. astray.

  655. This is not

  656. a minor caution.

  657. This is not

  658. fine print

  659. in his instruction

  660. to his disciples.

  661. He's saying,

  662. Watch out.

  663. Watch out

  664. for these guys.

  665. You need to be

  666. on your guard.

  667. Hordes of people

  668. are going to be

  669. deceived

  670. and led astray

  671. into eternal

  672. destruction

  673. because of

  674. the influence

  675. of these guys.

  676. If you take

  677. National Geographic,

  678. you would have read

  679. back in the month

  680. of August

  681. that there are,

  682. they ran an article

  683. on five men

  684. who are alive

  685. today who claim

  686. to be Jesus.

  687. Sounds silly.

  688. It's real.

  689. They have followers

  690. too,

  691. from a few dozen

  692. to five thousand.

  693. These guys can be

  694. found in Japan,

  695. Siberia,

  696. Brazil,

  697. Zambia,

  698. and South Africa.

  699. And this isn't new.

  700. People have been

  701. posing as Jesus

  702. for centuries.

  703. And Jesus is saying,

  704. Don't be led astray.

  705. Don't follow

  706. a charismatic personality

  707. because he or she

  708. is convincing

  709. and making good promises.

  710. You follow me.

  711. And even if there

  712. aren't folks

  713. that are coming

  714. right out

  715. and saying

  716. that they are

  717. the Christ,

  718. there are some

  719. slick teachers

  720. and preachers

  721. whose poisonous message

  722. goes down

  723. sweet and smooth

  724. and they are

  725. leading many,

  726. millions,

  727. astray.

  728. These teachers

  729. promise relief

  730. from suffering.

  731. They promise

  732. power from on high

  733. to make quick fixes.

  734. They are quick

  735. to capitalize

  736. on people's

  737. basic fears

  738. and needs

  739. and desires

  740. to gain following

  741. and to pad

  742. their pockets.

  743. And they are

  744. much like the hypocrites

  745. that Jesus denounced

  746. last week

  747. in Matthew 23

  748. for slamming

  749. the door

  750. of the kingdom

  751. in people's faces.

  752. they love

  753. to point

  754. to themselves

  755. not to God.

  756. So,

  757. brothers and sisters,

  758. be careful

  759. what you listen to.

  760. Compare what you

  761. hear to the word

  762. of God.

  763. Test the spirits

  764. as 1 John 4 says.

  765. If the message

  766. you're listening to

  767. is more therapeutic

  768. than it is

  769. convicting of sin,

  770. watch out.

  771. If it seems

  772. like sugar water

  773. goes down sweet

  774. but it doesn't

  775. feel like meat,

  776. watch out.

  777. Don't be deceived.

  778. If it's more

  779. about you

  780. triumphing

  781. over your

  782. present circumstances

  783. more than

  784. you delighting

  785. in God

  786. when your

  787. present circumstances

  788. are hard,

  789. watch out.

  790. Test the spirits.

  791. Be a discerning

  792. Christian.

  793. Drink down

  794. the word of God.

  795. Open up your Bible

  796. and read it.

  797. Consume it

  798. so that the truth

  799. of God gets lodged

  800. at the core

  801. of who you are

  802. and you are not

  803. deceived.

  804. Don't be led astray.

  805. He is coming soon.

  806. His third

  807. don't be

  808. is found

  809. in verses 6

  810. through 8.

  811. Let's read them

  812. together.

  813. And you will hear

  814. of wars

  815. and rumors

  816. of wars.

  817. See that you

  818. are not alarmed

  819. for this must

  820. take place

  821. but the end

  822. is not yet.

  823. Nation will

  824. rise against

  825. nation

  826. and kingdom

  827. against kingdom

  828. and there will

  829. be famines

  830. and earthquakes

  831. in various places.

  832. All these

  833. are but the

  834. beginning

  835. of the birth

  836. pains.

  837. Jesus' third

  838. don't be

  839. is

  840. don't be

  841. alarmed.

  842. Don't be

  843. alarmed.

  844. I have to confess

  845. I'm a bit of a

  846. news junkie.

  847. This is a weakness

  848. of mine.

  849. I like to check

  850. the news.

  851. If you look

  852. at the news

  853. at all

  854. it's hard

  855. not to be

  856. alarmed

  857. at stuff

  858. that you

  859. hear.

  860. North Korea,

  861. Las Vegas,

  862. ISIS,

  863. Russia,

  864. earthquakes in

  865. Mexico,

  866. hurricanes down

  867. south,

  868. etc.

  869. etc.

  870. But what

  871. Jesus tells us

  872. here is an

  873. antidote

  874. to the

  875. end times

  876. frenzy that

  877. Christians can

  878. get in

  879. if we start

  880. to see

  881. political turmoil

  882. or natural

  883. disasters or

  884. other troubling

  885. things in the

  886. headlines and

  887. wonder if

  888. it's now the

  889. time.

  890. He tells us

  891. very clearly

  892. in verse 6

  893. see to it

  894. that you

  895. are not

  896. alarmed.

  897. Don't be

  898. moved.

  899. Don't be

  900. disturbed.

  901. Why not?

  902. When the rest

  903. of society is

  904. distressed by

  905. nuclear weapons

  906. that are in

  907. North Korea,

  908. political issues

  909. at home and

  910. abroad,

  911. earthquakes,

  912. hurricanes,

  913. why shouldn't

  914. Christians be

  915. freaking out

  916. about these

  917. things,

  918. wondering if

  919. the end is

  920. near?

  921. Look at

  922. verse 6.

  923. This is such

  924. a comforting

  925. verse.

  926. This must

  927. take place,

  928. but the end

  929. is not yet.

  930. Man, this

  931. fantastic sentence

  932. tells us a lot.

  933. First, it tells

  934. us God is in

  935. control.

  936. These things

  937. are necessary.

  938. They must take

  939. place because

  940. they are a part

  941. of God's

  942. sovereign plan.

  943. No tectonic

  944. plates shift

  945. apart from

  946. his sovereign

  947. hand.

  948. The wind and

  949. the waves are

  950. under his

  951. sovereign sway.

  952. Trump,

  953. Putin,

  954. Kim Jong-un,

  955. Theresa May,

  956. and every other

  957. influential political

  958. ruler on the

  959. planet can't get

  960. out of bed in

  961. the morning aside

  962. from God's

  963. sovereign command.

  964. The living God

  965. is taking history

  966. to his

  967. desired end.

  968. in his way

  969. and his

  970. timing.

  971. God is in

  972. control.

  973. These things

  974. must take

  975. place.

  976. But not only

  977. does it tell us

  978. that these things

  979. are under God's

  980. sovereign control,

  981. it also tells us

  982. that these

  983. political and

  984. natural disturbances

  985. are evidence

  986. elements of the

  987. spiritual conflict

  988. that is raging

  989. between the

  990. kingdom of God

  991. and the domain

  992. of darkness

  993. at this very

  994. moment.

  995. When Jesus

  996. died and

  997. rose and

  998. ascended on

  999. high to

  1000. reign at God's

  1001. right hand,

  1002. his undefeatable

  1003. kingdom was

  1004. inaugurated.

  1005. need.

  1006. But though he

  1007. will be

  1008. triumphant,

  1009. his enemies

  1010. are not yet

  1011. under his

  1012. feet.

  1013. Hence,

  1014. there is

  1015. political and

  1016. natural turmoil.

  1017. The kingdom

  1018. is now,

  1019. brothers and

  1020. sisters.

  1021. It is here,

  1022. but it is also

  1023. not fully here.

  1024. The good news

  1025. of the kingdom

  1026. is still advancing

  1027. through the

  1028. proclamation of

  1029. the good news

  1030. of a crucified

  1031. and risen

  1032. king.

  1033. And when the

  1034. end finally

  1035. comes,

  1036. when the

  1037. triumphant

  1038. king returns,

  1039. the enemy

  1040. and all of

  1041. his friends

  1042. will be put

  1043. under his

  1044. feet.

  1045. We, as his

  1046. people, we

  1047. know this.

  1048. We know that

  1049. we are locked

  1050. in an epic

  1051. conflict in

  1052. which the war

  1053. is won,

  1054. but the battle

  1055. is still raging.

  1056. When the

  1057. allies invaded

  1058. Europe on D-Day

  1059. on June 6,

  1060. 1944, the

  1061. war was over.

  1062. Hitler knew

  1063. that he was

  1064. done for,

  1065. or at least

  1066. his generals

  1067. did.

  1068. It was only

  1069. a matter of

  1070. time.

  1071. But the end

  1072. of the war

  1073. was still

  1074. 11 bloody

  1075. months away.

  1076. Millions more

  1077. would die

  1078. because Hitler

  1079. was a madman

  1080. and he would

  1081. sell every

  1082. German life

  1083. for his

  1084. insane cause

  1085. and he fought

  1086. fiercely.

  1087. Our enemy

  1088. is fighting

  1089. a desperate

  1090. war that

  1091. he has

  1092. already

  1093. lost.

  1094. And yet the

  1095. conflict will

  1096. only get

  1097. fiercer as

  1098. the end

  1099. draws nearer.

  1100. Because in

  1101. the words of

  1102. a great hymn,

  1103. he knows his

  1104. end is

  1105. sure.

  1106. And then,

  1107. one day,

  1108. our captain

  1109. will come.

  1110. in the

  1111. meantime,

  1112. we don't

  1113. need to

  1114. be alarmed.

  1115. We stay

  1116. engaged in

  1117. the conflict,

  1118. faithful,

  1119. unmoved,

  1120. discerning,

  1121. unflinching.

  1122. We know that

  1123. these are just

  1124. the beginning

  1125. of the labor

  1126. pains.

  1127. They start

  1128. slow,

  1129. they get more

  1130. and more

  1131. painful,

  1132. more and more

  1133. intense,

  1134. and we're not

  1135. sure when the

  1136. end's going

  1137. to come.

  1138. So we know

  1139. these are just

  1140. the beginning

  1141. of the labor

  1142. pains.

  1143. So like

  1144. the weather

  1145. GIs,

  1146. we press

  1147. forward.

  1148. We are

  1149. unalarmed.

  1150. God is in

  1151. control.

  1152. Our enemy's

  1153. end is

  1154. sure.

  1155. Our king

  1156. has conquered

  1157. and he's

  1158. coming soon.

  1159. The last

  1160. don't be is

  1161. found in

  1162. verses 9

  1163. through 12.

  1164. Verses 9

  1165. through 12,

  1166. and I'll

  1167. warn you,

  1168. these are

  1169. probably the

  1170. most depressing.

  1171. Then they

  1172. will deliver

  1173. you up

  1174. to tribulation

  1175. and put

  1176. you to

  1177. death.

  1178. And you

  1179. will be

  1180. hated by

  1181. all nations

  1182. for my

  1183. name's

  1184. sake.

  1185. And then

  1186. many will

  1187. fall away

  1188. and betray

  1189. one another

  1190. and hate

  1191. one another.

  1192. And many

  1193. false prophets

  1194. will arise

  1195. and lead

  1196. many astray.

  1197. And because

  1198. lawlessness

  1199. will be

  1200. increased,

  1201. the love

  1202. of many

  1203. will grow

  1204. cold.

  1205. The last

  1206. don't be

  1207. is don't

  1208. be surprised.

  1209. Don't be

  1210. surprised.

  1211. Jesus

  1212. doesn't want

  1213. his disciples

  1214. to be

  1215. surprised

  1216. by two

  1217. things.

  1218. Opposition

  1219. from without

  1220. and treachery

  1221. from within.

  1222. His disciples

  1223. will face

  1224. opposition

  1225. from without

  1226. and treachery

  1227. from within.

  1228. And he

  1229. does not

  1230. want us

  1231. to be

  1232. surprised.

  1233. Look at

  1234. verse 9.

  1235. They,

  1236. quote unquote,

  1237. notice it's

  1238. rather a vague

  1239. they are

  1240. going to

  1241. deliver you

  1242. up the

  1243. tribulation

  1244. and put

  1245. you to

  1246. death.

  1247. You will

  1248. be hated

  1249. by all

  1250. nations.

  1251. Man,

  1252. that's some

  1253. stiff opposition.

  1254. Why all

  1255. this persecution

  1256. and hate

  1257. from all

  1258. nations?

  1259. for my

  1260. namesake.

  1261. If they

  1262. hated

  1263. Jesus,

  1264. which they

  1265. did,

  1266. they will

  1267. hate his

  1268. people.

  1269. If they

  1270. mocked

  1271. Jesus,

  1272. which they

  1273. did,

  1274. they will

  1275. mock his

  1276. people.

  1277. If they

  1278. killed

  1279. Jesus,

  1280. which they

  1281. did,

  1282. they will

  1283. kill his

  1284. people.

  1285. Jesus

  1286. tells us

  1287. no less.

  1288. Don't be

  1289. surprised.

  1290. Listen to

  1291. Peter,

  1292. in 1 Peter,

  1293. right about

  1294. this,

  1295. years after

  1296. he heard

  1297. Jesus speak

  1298. these words,

  1299. and not too

  1300. long before

  1301. he himself

  1302. met his

  1303. bloody end.

  1304. Beloved,

  1305. do not be

  1306. surprised at

  1307. the fiery

  1308. trial when

  1309. it comes

  1310. upon you

  1311. to test

  1312. you,

  1313. as if

  1314. something

  1315. strange

  1316. were happening

  1317. to you,

  1318. but rejoice

  1319. insofar as

  1320. you share

  1321. Christ's

  1322. sufferings,

  1323. that you

  1324. may also

  1325. rejoice and

  1326. be glad

  1327. when his

  1328. glory is

  1329. revealed.

  1330. He's

  1331. saying,

  1332. if you

  1333. face

  1334. opposition

  1335. for

  1336. being,

  1337. belonging

  1338. to Jesus

  1339. now,

  1340. you will

  1341. receive

  1342. glory

  1343. because

  1344. you

  1345. will

  1346. belong

  1347. to

  1348. Jesus

  1349. then.

  1350. Let

  1351. your

  1352. hardship

  1353. now

  1354. cause

  1355. you

  1356. to

  1357. endure

  1358. for

  1359. the

  1360. hope

  1361. of

  1362. the

  1363. glory

  1364. that

  1365. you

  1366. will

  1367. experience

  1368. then.

  1369. We're

  1370. in a

  1371. little

  1372. privileged

  1373. bubble

  1374. of

  1375. security

  1376. right

  1377. now.

  1378. Our

  1379. time

  1380. here

  1381. in

  1382. America

  1383. for

  1384. the

  1385. past

  1386. couple

  1387. hundred

  1388. years

  1389. has

  1390. been

  1391. nice.

  1392. But our

  1393. brothers and

  1394. sisters

  1395. in Nigeria,

  1396. Turkey,

  1397. North Korea,

  1398. South Sudan,

  1399. Iran,

  1400. Saudi Arabia,

  1401. Pakistan,

  1402. and so many

  1403. other places

  1404. suffer in a

  1405. variety of

  1406. ways for

  1407. his name's

  1408. sake.

  1409. Jesus does

  1410. not want us

  1411. to be

  1412. surprised.

  1413. We'll face

  1414. opposition and

  1415. it will be

  1416. fierce.

  1417. so let's

  1418. pray for

  1419. our

  1420. brothers and

  1421. sisters

  1422. around the

  1423. world

  1424. who face

  1425. that.

  1426. I'm sure

  1427. there are

  1428. many

  1429. brothers and

  1430. sisters in

  1431. Nepal that

  1432. are facing

  1433. things

  1434. similar.

  1435. And let's

  1436. pray that

  1437. God would

  1438. cause us

  1439. to persevere

  1440. no matter

  1441. what comes.

  1442. But to be

  1443. honest,

  1444. that's not the

  1445. hardest part

  1446. about this

  1447. passage,

  1448. is it?

  1449. It's not

  1450. the opposition

  1451. from the

  1452. outside,

  1453. it's treachery

  1454. from within.

  1455. Jesus is

  1456. telling us

  1457. in verse

  1458. 10 that

  1459. many will

  1460. fall away,

  1461. betray one

  1462. another,

  1463. and hate

  1464. one another.

  1465. There will

  1466. be treachery

  1467. among the

  1468. family.

  1469. And Jesus

  1470. doesn't want

  1471. us to be

  1472. surprised.

  1473. And notice

  1474. what the

  1475. triggers are

  1476. for this

  1477. treachery.

  1478. In verse

  1479. 10, it's

  1480. a response

  1481. to the

  1482. heat of

  1483. opposition.

  1484. Persecution

  1485. is a good

  1486. way to

  1487. sift out

  1488. believers

  1489. who aren't

  1490. genuine.

  1491. When you

  1492. catch flack

  1493. for being

  1494. a Christian,

  1495. all of a

  1496. sudden your

  1497. commitment is

  1498. tested.

  1499. Fear is a

  1500. powerful

  1501. motivator.

  1502. It's easy

  1503. to criticize,

  1504. but if

  1505. we were

  1506. about to

  1507. lose our

  1508. job,

  1509. or our

  1510. social standing,

  1511. or our

  1512. family,

  1513. or our

  1514. possessions,

  1515. or home,

  1516. or our

  1517. life,

  1518. because of

  1519. our association

  1520. with Jesus,

  1521. what would

  1522. we do?

  1523. It helps

  1524. us test

  1525. our resolve

  1526. to follow

  1527. him.

  1528. So it's

  1529. the heat

  1530. of opposition

  1531. causes

  1532. betrayal,

  1533. but also

  1534. verse 11,

  1535. false teaching

  1536. does too.

  1537. There's our

  1538. false teaching

  1539. again.

  1540. Many will

  1541. betray the

  1542. faith because

  1543. they are led

  1544. astray,

  1545. rejecting Jesus

  1546. as Lord,

  1547. and the

  1548. community of

  1549. believers as

  1550. family.

  1551. Don't be led

  1552. astray,

  1553. and don't be

  1554. surprised when

  1555. many are.

  1556. Look at

  1557. verse 12.

  1558. Here's another

  1559. trigger.

  1560. This might have

  1561. more to do with

  1562. our current

  1563. situation right

  1564. now than

  1565. anything else.

  1566. Another

  1567. treachery

  1568. trigger is

  1569. the moral

  1570. decay of

  1571. society.

  1572. The increase

  1573. of lawlessness

  1574. will cause

  1575. the love of

  1576. many to

  1577. grow cold.

  1578. Brothers and

  1579. sisters, we

  1580. don't follow

  1581. Jesus in a

  1582. vacuum.

  1583. We are

  1584. surrounded by

  1585. our culture,

  1586. and our

  1587. culture values

  1588. more than

  1589. anything else

  1590. right now in

  1591. the 21st

  1592. century in

  1593. the United

  1594. States, the

  1595. autonomy of

  1596. the individual

  1597. self.

  1598. Having cut

  1599. ourselves loose

  1600. from God's

  1601. glory and

  1602. his good

  1603. law, we

  1604. must worship

  1605. something else,

  1606. and self is a

  1607. wonderful substitute,

  1608. or so it

  1609. seems.

  1610. So isn't it

  1611. wonderful to be

  1612. able to do

  1613. what's right

  1614. in my own

  1615. eyes without

  1616. anyone saying

  1617. otherwise?

  1618. And the

  1619. pressures of

  1620. living in a

  1621. society that

  1622. worships self

  1623. can force us

  1624. who follow

  1625. Jesus to

  1626. make a choice.

  1627. Will my

  1628. love for the

  1629. crucified,

  1630. risen, and

  1631. returning king

  1632. burn fervently

  1633. in the midst of

  1634. such pressure of

  1635. loving self?

  1636. Or will it

  1637. sputter,

  1638. fizzle,

  1639. grow cold

  1640. because it

  1641. has found

  1642. self to be

  1643. an acceptable

  1644. substitute for

  1645. the living

  1646. God?

  1647. Brothers and

  1648. sisters, this

  1649. is a crucial

  1650. question that

  1651. we must ask

  1652. ourselves,

  1653. especially in

  1654. 2017.

  1655. Is a love

  1656. for this world

  1657. causing my

  1658. love for my

  1659. returning king

  1660. and my love

  1661. for my brothers

  1662. and sisters in

  1663. Christ to

  1664. grow cold?

  1665. Jesus doesn't

  1666. want us to be

  1667. surprised.

  1668. He doesn't

  1669. want us among

  1670. the many who

  1671. will fall

  1672. away, be

  1673. led astray,

  1674. or whose love

  1675. will grow cold.

  1676. He is coming

  1677. soon.

  1678. And that leads

  1679. us to our

  1680. final command

  1681. from Jesus,

  1682. which is his

  1683. one and only

  1684. be.

  1685. We've heard

  1686. four don't

  1687. be's.

  1688. Here is his

  1689. be.

  1690. Be faithful.

  1691. Be faithful.

  1692. Look at

  1693. verses 13 and

  1694. 14.

  1695. But the one

  1696. who endures to

  1697. the end will

  1698. be saved.

  1699. And this

  1700. gospel of the

  1701. kingdom will be

  1702. proclaimed throughout

  1703. the whole world as

  1704. a testimony to all

  1705. nations, and

  1706. then the end

  1707. will come.

  1708. The first thing

  1709. that should pop

  1710. for us as we

  1711. look at these

  1712. verses is the

  1713. shift from plural

  1714. to singular.

  1715. Did you check

  1716. that out?

  1717. All through this

  1718. passage there have

  1719. been so many

  1720. plurals.

  1721. Many will come.

  1722. Many will be

  1723. led astray.

  1724. Many will fall

  1725. away.

  1726. Many false

  1727. prophets.

  1728. The love of

  1729. many will grow

  1730. cold.

  1731. But the one,

  1732. but the one

  1733. who endures to

  1734. the end will be

  1735. saved.

  1736. He's not saying

  1737. there's only going

  1738. to be one who

  1739. endures.

  1740. He's saying you,

  1741. individual, personal

  1742. disciple of mine,

  1743. endure.

  1744. Hold fast.

  1745. He wants to grab

  1746. each disciple's face

  1747. in his hands and

  1748. say, hold fast.

  1749. Endure.

  1750. Endure through

  1751. deception.

  1752. Endure through

  1753. temptation.

  1754. Endure through

  1755. persecution.

  1756. Endure through the

  1757. treachery.

  1758. Endure through the

  1759. lawlessness.

  1760. Endure, and you

  1761. will be saved.

  1762. Be faithful.

  1763. When he says,

  1764. will be saved,

  1765. by the way, he's

  1766. not saying that

  1767. endurance earns

  1768. salvation.

  1769. Salvation from

  1770. sin, being made

  1771. righteous by God's

  1772. grace in Jesus,

  1773. is faith.

  1774. Faith is the way

  1775. in which we are

  1776. saved by latching

  1777. on to God's grace

  1778. through faith.

  1779. We know that.

  1780. That's one of the

  1781. things that we

  1782. celebrate.

  1783. However, those who

  1784. are truly saved,

  1785. will endure.

  1786. in the words of

  1787. one writer, true

  1788. Christians stick.

  1789. They endure.

  1790. They persevere.

1791. One of the signs of

  1792. you truly being a

  1793. disciple of Jesus,

  1794. being truly saved,

  1795. is that you're

  1796. enduring.

  1797. And one sense that

  1798. to be very

  1799. encouraging for us.

  1800. And they will be

  1801. saved from the

  1802. judgment that is

  1803. coming.

  1804. And when the

  1805. end comes, when

  1806. Christ returns, the

  1807. work of salvation

  1808. will be full circle.

  1809. As Peter says,

  1810. set your hope

  1811. fully on the

  1812. grace that will be

  1813. brought to you at

  1814. the revelation of

  1815. Jesus Christ.

  1816. Did you catch

  1817. that?

  1818. There will be

  1819. grace brought to

  1820. you when he

  1821. returns.

  1822. On that day, we

  1823. will see him face

  1824. to face, and the

  1825. last grace will be

  1826. given.

  1827. Resurrection life,

  1828. fullness of joy in

  1829. his presence.

  1830. That's what we're

  1831. enduring for.

  1832. That's what we're

  1833. aiming at.

  1834. Seeing him, standing

  1835. in his presence, in

  1836. his unshielded glory

  1837. without fear or shame

  1838. and delighting in

  1839. his goodness

  1840. forever.

  1841. That's what we

  1842. want to endure to

  1843. the end for.

  1844. It's not a stiff

  1845. upper lip kind of

  1846. endurance.

  1847. It's a I can't

  1848. wait for that

  1849. endurance.

  1850. So be faithful.

  1851. Remain true and

  1852. devoted to your

  1853. Lord Jesus no

  1854. matter what it

  1855. costs you.

  1856. Set your hope

  1857. fully on the joy

  1858. of beholding him

  1859. on that day.

  1860. But not only does

1861. our Lord call us to

  1862. be faithful and

  1863. endure, he also

  1864. calls us to be

  1865. faithful to the

  1866. mission.

  1867. He's given us as

  1868. a church.

  1869. Look at verse 14.

  1870. He's calling us to

  1871. advance under fire.

  1872. The gospel of the

  1873. kingdom will be

  1874. proclaimed throughout

1875. the whole world as a

  1876. testimony to all

  1877. nations and then the

  1878. end will come.

  1879. The good news of

  1880. Jesus who vanquished

  1881. our enemies of sin,

  1882. death, and Satan is

  1883. going forth and will

  1884. continue to go forth

  1885. throughout the whole

1886. world just as it did in

  1887. the first century and

  1888. has for the last

  1889. 20.

  1890. When his disciples

  1891. heard that phrase,

  1892. the whole world,

  1893. they probably thought

  1894. the inhabited Roman

  1895. world, which were the

  1896. limits of the known

  1897. civilization.

  1898. And when they were

  1899. empowered by the Holy

1900. Spirit at the day of

  1901. Pentecost, they went.

  1902. They advanced under

  1903. fire.

1904. Some of them made it to

  1905. India.

  1906. Thomas was martyred in

  1907. India according to

  1908. tradition.

  1909. That's beyond the scope

  1910. of the Roman Empire.

  1911. According to tradition,

  1912. Simon the Zealot made

1913. it to the coast of

  1914. West Africa and Britain

  1915. before they crucified

  1916. him.

  1917. Throughout the pages of

  1918. church history, you will

1919. read story after story of

  1920. the church advancing the

  1921. gospel of the kingdom

  1922. under fire.

  1923. 1,400 years ago after,

  1924. sorry, 1,400 years after

  1925. these guys lived, another

1926. man of God was used to

1927. dust off the true gospel

  1928. of grace after false

  1929. teaching had corrupted it

  1930. for a prolonged season.

  1931. 500 years ago this

  1932. Tuesday, a man nailed

1933. 95 theses to the door

  1934. of the Wittenberg

  1935. Church in Germany and

  1936. ignited the Protestant

  1937. Reformation, which was a

1938. tidal wave of truth that

  1939. we're still writing today.

1940. The gospel of the kingdom

  1941. continues to be preached,

  1942. continues to advance under

  1943. fire.

1944. And that's what Jesus is

1945. calling us to do today.

1946. One day the witness to the

  1947. nations will be complete,

1948. and then the end will

  1949. come.

  1950. That may be this

1951. generation, it may be many

  1952. generations off.

1953. But whether the end comes

1954. soon or far away, he is

1955. calling us to be faithful to

1956. the end, to endure, and to

  1957. advance under fire.

1958. We're not to be distracted

1959. with this current age, not

1960. led astray, not alarmed when

1961. the world goes topsy-turvy, not

  1962. surprised when we face

  1963. opposition or treachery, but

  1964. faithful to the end.

1965. Before we respond to God's

1966. word in prayer and song, I

1967. want us to consider three

  1968. questions.

1969. This will help us to adjust

1970. our lives in light of this

  1971. word.

1972. First is this, am I living my

1973. life in the light of that day?

1974. Am I living my life in the

  1975. light of that day?

  1976. If you're a believer, then in

1977. one sense, yes, you are,

  1978. because you've placed your

1979. ultimate hope and trust in

  1980. Jesus.

1981. But we also get distracted.

1982. We get overwhelmed, we get

1983. fearful, and our life can be

  1984. functionally ruled by earthly

  1985. and temporary concerns of

  1986. today, not that day.

1987. When you might be stuck in the

1988. mire of sin, you need to do

1989. what Hebrews 12 calls you to

1990. do, which is to cast off the

1991. sin that easily entangles and

1992. run the race ahead of you, set

  1993. before you with perseverance,

1994. fixing your eyes on Jesus.

1995. If you have not put your full

1996. trust in this living God for

1997. the forgiveness of your sins,

1998. then consider this day in light

  1999. of that day.

2000. Respond to the living words of

  2001. Jesus.

2002. I'd love to pray with you

  2003. afterwards, talk to somebody

2004. next to you, ask them how you

2005. can respond to that today.

2006. The second question is this.

  2007. Am I discouraged, fearful,

2008. confused, or surprised by the

2009. difficulty of living in these

  2010. last days?

  2011. Am I confused, fearful,

  2012. discouraged, surprised in the

2013. difficulty of these last days?

2014. That's easy for us to be in that

  2015. place.

2016. Let's let Jesus' realism give us a

2017. wartime mentality of how we need

2018. to live in these last days.

2019. Our King is calling us to advance

2020. when the bullets are flying.

2021. We should not be surprised,

  2022. alarmed, fearful, confused, or

  2023. discouraged.

  2024. Doesn't mean it won't be hard.

  2025. Doesn't mean there won't be tears

  2026. and disappointments.

2027. Doesn't mean it will not be

2028. painful, but Jesus wants to call

2029. his words to mind to give us

  2030. hope.

2031. The one who endures to the end

  2032. will be saved.

2033. Lastly, do I feel the urgency of

  2034. this mission?

2035. Do I feel the urgency of the

  2036. mission?

2037. Jesus is calling us as a church to

  2038. advance under fire.

2039. So what is our response to his

  2040. command?

2041. Do we feel the urgency of the

2042. moment that he is coming soon?

2043. That many are without the witness

  2044. of the gospel?

2045. Are we giving considerably of our

2046. time, of our energy, of our prayer

2047. to the mission of the witness of the

2048. good news to all people?

2049. He isn't laying a guilt trip on us.

2050. He's giving us our marching orders.

2051. So let's respond with faith and
