  1. Let's pray together.

  2. Our great triune God, we come to you this morning as your people,

  3. and we come to you at this time of the year.

  4. And we would ask this morning that you, God, through your word,

  5. as a ministry of your spirit,

  6. God, would you do a work of wonder in our hearts?

  7. Would you bring to our minds the wonder of Christmas?

  8. God, we pray that you would meet us, continue to meet us,

  9. and that we would leave here poised to walk through this season,

  10. not just to close out on the 26th,

  11. but to be wondrous into the new year.

  12. God, meet us, we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  13. You may be seated.

  14. Children, you are excused to your Sunday school classes.

  15. And I just want to take a minute here.

  16. This morning is David Ulrich's last time serving us as our worship leader.

  17. And he has stepped in about a year and a half ago

  18. when we were going through some hard times as a church.

  19. And David, Lexi, thank you so much for faithfully serving us as a congregation.

  20. We are so grateful for you.

  21. Thank you.

  22. And just personally, I'm extremely grateful for you, David.

  23. Thank you so much.

  24. Well, it is upon us.

  25. Christmas time has come.

  26. I'm not sure if you noticed this,

  27. but the 24-hour Christmas music cycle began a little early this year.

  28. In fact, my wife, in principle, said,

  29. I will not listen to the Christmas music until Thanksgiving is done.

  30. I, on the other hand, started sneakily listening to the Christmas music.

  31. It was not a point of divisiveness between us.

  32. But it started early.

  33. So Christmas music, 24 hours.

  34. Christmas catalogs coming in.

  35. Christmas decorations being hung, lit up.

  36. Christmas food being prepared and thought of.

  37. Christmas TV, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

  38. Elf, Miracle on 34th Street.

  39. It's a Wonderful Life.

  40. It's all lining up.

  41. Our culture, the culture that we're living in,

  42. is creating an atmosphere of wonder around this season.

  43. Here's the deal.

  44. It doesn't revive your soul.

  45. At best, all these things, and they're good.

  46. They're temporary.

  47. And as a pastor, you know what I want to help you get ready for?

  48. I want you to get ready for December 25th.

  49. And so on the Christmas Eve, during that service,

  50. we're singing our souls out to our wonderful God.

  51. But when December 26th rolls around,

  52. you guys don't drop off in a depression.

  53. You know, who is the owner, as of yet, of a real Christmas tree?

  54. We are.

  55. We went and got our Christmas tree this past Monday and set it up.

  56. And what will inevitably happen is,

  57. no matter how much we water it,

  58. this tree, which is so fragrant right now with pine in our house,

  59. it's little needles are soft, the bows are tender.

  60. You know, you reach in to fill water,

  61. you don't have needles drop all around you.

  62. It's still kind of living.

  63. But what inevitably happens is,

  64. it slowly dries out.

  65. The needles start dropping,

  66. the bows get brittle.

  67. It's a little metaphor of what many of us experience.

  68. By the time December 26th around,

  69. we don't want any of us to be like a discarded Christmas tree

  70. that's dry and brittle

  71. and gets to start it in the city pickups.

  72. Here's what we're looking to do this Christmas time.

  73. We believe God's word revives us.

  74. And we want this season for us all to be a time of reviving.

  75. A time not of needles dropping, but of bearing fruit.

  76. A time of not growing brittle,

  77. but of growing tender to the Lord.

  78. Not of hardening, but of softening.

  79. And so this month, starting today,

  80. we're doing a little series called Reclaiming Christmas.

  81. And so this morning,

  82. we're going to reclaim the wonder of Christmas

  83. the true wonder.

  84. Next Sunday, we're going to reclaim the joy of Christmas,

  85. the true joy of Christmas.

  86. Then we're going to reclaim the glory of Christmas.

  87. On Christmas Eve,

  88. we're going to reclaim the worship,

  89. the praise of Christmas.

  90. And then Christmas isn't done.

  91. We're going all the way through to New Year's Eve.

  92. And on that Sunday,

  93. we're going to reclaim the mission,

  94. the purpose of Christmas.

  95. And this morning, we're talking about wonder.

  96. And wonder is simply that experience of awe and amazement

  97. every one of us in this room have experienced in some measure.

  98. Who hasn't walked out of their homes on a crisp January Wisconsin morning

  99. to a fresh fall of four inches of snow?

  100. And you walk out,

  101. and instantly your lungs are filled with that cold, chilly air.

  102. And it is something good about it.

  103. You hear your boots crunching on that four inches of virgin snow.

  104. Your eyes alight on all the winter wonderland of white spread apart.

  105. It's a blanket.

  106. It's bright.

  107. It's sparkling in the sunlight.

  108. And as you tune your ears to it,

  109. there is a muffled silence.

  110. It's wonderful.

  111. You've experienced wonder too when you've held a little infant in your hands.

  112. Newly born.

  113. And you're thinking,

  114. wow, this child,

  115. fully human.

  116. It's got his life in front of him.

  117. And if you're a parent of this child,

  118. you have this sense of wonder.

  119. It's like, this baby is dependent on me.

  120. We've all experienced wonder to some degree.

  121. This culture that we live in

  122. tends to try to fabricate a wonder around this time.

  123. It doesn't last.

  124. You know what happens on December 26th

  125. with your 24-hour Christmas music station?

  126. They go back to what they were playing before.

  127. By December 26th,

  128. you're thinking about,

  129. how do I work off all this weight I gain

  130. with all this Christmas food?

  131. December 26th rolls around,

  132. and you're thinking,

  133. how long do we have the lights up?

  134. December 26th rolls around,

  135. and you're thinking,

  136. when do we take the tree down,

  137. and when do we bring it to the dump?

  138. December 26th

  139. will come,

  140. and the wonder of this world

  141. will suddenly stop.

  142. But the wonder of God's word

  143. never stops.

  144. And so this morning,

  145. this Christmas,

  146. I want to help you

  147. get your wonder on.

  148. To wonder

  149. at God's word

  150. and what God has to say

  151. about Christmas.

  152. And so this morning,

  153. I'm going to try to

  154. fill your heart

  155. with wonder

  156. from God's word.

  157. So we're going to look at

  158. three wonders this morning.

  159. The wonder of the plan,

  160. the wonder of the person,

  161. and the wonder of the purpose.

  162. And typically,

  163. I just preach through

  164. a section of the Bible.

  165. This morning's a little different.

  166. I'm going to be

  167. kind of preaching

  168. kind of more of a

  169. theological meditation,

  170. reflections

  171. on the wonder of the plan,

  172. the wonder of the person,

  173. and the wonder of the purpose.

  174. So you guys ready

  175. to get your wonder on?

  176. Let's talk about

  177. the wonder of his plan.

  178. Have you ever been

  179. leaving on a road trip

  180. from your home

  181. and you're out the door,

  182. you're in the car,

  183. who knows who's

  184. in the car with you,

  185. but you're going down,

  186. you're a minute in,

  187. and then all of a sudden

  188. someone says,

  189. I forgot,

  190. I forgot to go to the bathroom,

  191. I forgot to turn off the stove,

  192. I forgot to close

  193. the garage door,

  194. I forgot to lock the door,

  195. I forgot to pack,

  196. I forgot,

  197. and so what do you have to do?

  198. You got to go back.

  199. You got to go back,

  200. you get it all done,

  201. and then you leave again.

  202. As followers of Jesus

  203. living in this culture

  204. and living in this time,

  205. do you know what can happen?

  206. The culture Christmas bus

  207. can leave

  208. and can start heading down

  209. that road of Christmas 2017

  210. and we find ourselves on it

  211. and then we have to ask,

  212. did I forget something?

  213. And many of us

  214. forget

  215. the wonder

  216. of Christmas.

  217. So,

  218. let me help you

  219. get your wonder on.

  220. One of the things

  221. that can happen to us

  222. as we celebrate Christmas

  223. is that we can just

  224. kind of focus us

  225. on the here and now

  226. of a particular Christmas.

  227. Christmas,

  228. December 2017

  229. and it occupies

  230. our thinking

  231. and it occupies

  232. our planning.

  233. But just like

  234. leaving down a road

  235. and realizing

  236. you've forgotten something,

  237. I want to bring you back

  238. this Christmas time.

  239. I want to bring you back

  240. so you don't forget

  241. what is central

  242. to Christmas,

  243. the wonder.

  244. And so,

  245. let's go back first

  246. by going back

  247. to the first century

  248. in Bethlehem

  249. 2,000 years ago.

  250. And I'm just going to

  251. kind of move quickly

  252. through this.

  253. I just want to start

  254. getting some things

  255. in your mind.

  256. That there is a plan

  257. in place

  258. and it's a wonderful plan.

  259. In Matthew 118,

  260. 118 through 23,

  261. an angel appears

  262. to Joseph

  263. and he tells him

  264. that his fiancee

  265. who's pregnant,

  266. he shouldn't divorce her,

  267. he shouldn't put her away

  268. because she's been conceived

  269. by the Holy Spirit

  270. with a child from God.

  271. And so,

  272. of all the little baby boys

  273. born 2,000 years ago,

  274. there was one of them

  275. who an angel is saying,

  276. this one is unique.

  277. In Matthew 2,

    Matthew 2:1–6

  278. verses 1 through 6,

  279. Herod is approached

  280. by some wise men

  281. who have seen

  282. this child's star

  283. in the sky

  284. and they ask Herod

  285. where the king

  286. of the Jews is.

  287. The king of the Jews

  288. appears at the beginning

  289. of Matthew

  290. and at the end

  291. of the Matthew.

  292. At the end of Matthew,

  293. it's on the plaque

  294. above Jesus' head

  295. on the cross.

  296. But they ask Herod,

  297. where is the king

  298. of the Jews?

  299. Herod says,

  300. let me talk to my guys.

  301. His guys tell him

  302. that the Messiah,

  303. the Christ,

  304. is going to be born

  305. in Bethlehem of Judea.

  306. So what we learn

  307. from that first century

  308. is that this child

  309. is going to be born.

  310. It's announced

  311. by an angel.

  312. He's going to be born

  313. to Joseph's fiancee

  314. who has miraculously

  315. gotten pregnant

  316. and he's going to be born

  317. in Bethlehem.

  318. And in Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:26–33

  319. verses 26 through 33,

  320. Gabriel the angel

  321. goes to Mary

  322. and tells Mary

  323. that she's going to be

  324. pregnant from the Holy Spirit.

  325. And what's most interesting

  326. there is that this child

  327. to be born to her,

  328. he's going to reign

  329. on David's throne forever.

  330. And so not only

  331. is this child,

  332. from going back

  333. to just the first century,

  334. we learn this is

  335. a unique child

  336. born of a virgin,

  337. born in Bethlehem,

  338. born to reign forever

  339. on David's throne.

  340. We've got to be like,

  341. well, this is a unique baby.

  342. But you know what?

  343. To really understand

  344. how unique this child is,

  345. we've got to go back

  346. beyond 2,000 years.

  347. We've got to go

  348. another 800 years

  349. beyond that.

  350. We've got to go

  351. to the prophet Isaiah

  352. and the prophet Micah.

  353. Micah.

  354. In Matthew 1, 18-23,

  355. when Matthew is sharing

  356. with us the story

  357. of this angel

  358. coming to Joseph

  359. and talking about

  360. the conception

  361. that takes place

  362. in Mary,

  363. if you would turn

  364. to Matthew 1, 23,

  365. there's a really interesting

  366. point that's made.

  367. All this took place

  368. in 22

  369. to fulfill

  370. what the Lord

  371. had spoken

  372. by the prophet,

  373. Behold,

  374. the virgin shall conceive

  375. and bear a son

  376. and they shall call

  377. his name Emmanuel,

  378. which means

  379. God with us.

  380. So here's what's going on.

  381. 2,000 years ago

  382. in Bethlehem,

  383. there's this little baby boy

  384. that's born

  385. and he's born miraculously.

  386. And Matthew says,

  387. oh, by the way,

  388. that's the fulfillment

  389. of a prophecy

  390. from Isaiah

  391. 750, 800 years beforehand

  392. that this child

  393. would be born

  394. of a virgin

  395. and his name

  396. would be Emmanuel,

  397. God with us.

  398. Do you know

  399. what prophecy implies

  400. in the fulfillment

  401. of prophecy?

  402. There's a plan.

  403. In Matthew 2,

  404. the fulfillment

  405. of prophecy.

  406. 2, 5,

  407. they told him

  408. in Bethlehem of Judea

  409. for it is written

  410. by the prophet

  411. and you, O Bethlehem,

  412. in the land of Judea

  413. are by no means

  414. least among the rulers

  415. of Judah

  416. for from you

  417. shall come a ruler

  418. who will shepherd

  419. my people Israel.

  420. Not only will this child

  421. be born in Bethlehem

  422. but he will be

  423. a shepherd of God's people,

  424. a king.

  425. So,

  426. what Matthew is saying

  427. in Matthew 2

  428. is that what takes place

  429. in the birth

  430. of this baby

  431. in Bethlehem

  432. at that time

  433. is a fulfillment

  434. of what Micah

  435. is talking about

  436. in Micah 5, 2.

  437. And when prophecy

  438. is fulfilled

  439. it reveals a plan.

  440. In Luke 1, 26-33

  441. we have the echoes

  442. of another passage.

  443. If you want to look

  444. there with me,

  445. Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1:32

  446. verses 32

  447. we read this,

  448. he will be great

  449. and this is

  450. Gabriel speaking to Mary,

  451. he will be great

  452. and will be called

  453. the son of the most high

  454. and the Lord God

  455. will give to him

  456. the throne of his father David

  457. and he will reign

  458. over the house

  459. of Jacob forever

  460. and of his kingdom

  461. there will be no end.

  462. There will be no end.

  463. There will be no end.

  464. There will be no end.

  465. Listen to Isaiah 9,

  466. 6 and 7.

  467. For to us a child is born,

  468. to us a son is given

  469. and the government

  470. shall be upon his shoulder

  471. and his name

  472. shall be called

  473. Wonderful Counselor,

  474. Mighty God,

  475. Everlasting Father,

  476. Prince of Peace.

  477. Of the increase

  478. of his government

  479. of peace

  480. there will be no end.

  481. There will be no end.

  482. There will be no end.

  483. On the throne of David

  484. and over his kingdom

  485. to establish it

  486. and to uphold it

  487. with justice

  488. and with righteousness

  489. from time forth,

  490. this time forth

  491. and forevermore

  492. the zeal of the Lord

  493. of hosts will do this.

  494. When we go back

  495. to 2,800 years from now

  496. and we see these prophecies

  497. of Isaiah and Micah

  498. and we see these prophecies

  499. being fulfilled

  500. in the birth

  501. of this little boy,

  502. it speaks of a plan.

  503. And so when we think

  504. about December 2017,

  505. we need to keep in mind

  506. that this Christmas

  507. is way bigger

  508. than this year.

  509. There is a great plan

  510. in place.

  511. And it goes back further.

  512. It goes back to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  513. In the midst of all these curses,

  514. God speaks a promise

  515. when he's cursing the serpent.

  516. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  517. he speaks a promise

  518. of an offspring of Eve

  519. who will come

  520. and he's a male offspring

  521. and he will crush

  522. the head of the serpent.

  523. There's a plan.

  524. And it goes even back further.

  525. It goes beyond Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  526. It goes beyond Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  527. and the creation of all things.

  528. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  529. speaks of a plan

  530. for the fullness of time.

  531. Ephesians 1, 3 through 14

  532. is this wonderful, wonderful passage

  533. about the triune God

  534. enacting a saving plan

  535. for the fullness of time

  536. that finds its unity in Jesus.

  537. God the Father

  538. God the Son

  539. accomplished the plan

  540. and God the Spirit

  541. applies the plan.

  542. What I want to do

  543. is help you to understand

  544. the context

  545. historically

  546. of Christmas.

  547. this Christmas,

  548. December 2017,

  549. we are observing something

  550. that took place

  551. 2,000 years ago

  552. and it was the fulfillment

  553. of a plan

  554. that God enacted

  555. from before the foundation

  556. of the world.

  557. I want to help you

  558. get your wonder on

  559. a little bit.

  560. It's not just this Christmas.

  561. Christmas

  562. is about a plan

  563. for the fullness of time.

  564. and it centers

  565. on a person.

  566. The plan is big

  567. from everlasting

  568. to everlasting

  569. and the person

  570. who's central

  571. to this plan

  572. is amazing.

  573. We've looked at the plan

  574. now let's look

  575. at the person.

  576. I want to help you

  577. wonder

  578. at the person

  579. central to Christmas.

  580. It's the same person

  581. who's central

  582. to God's plan

  583. for the fullness

  584. of time.

  585. God's plan

  586. of salvation.

  587. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  588. chapter 1

  589. we read that

  590. there's a plan

  591. in place

  592. for the fullness

  593. of time

  594. for God

  595. to unite

  596. all things

  597. in Christ.

  598. Jesus' birth

  599. is the incarnate

  600. turning point

  601. to God's plan

  602. of salvation.

  603. You know

  604. before becoming

  605. a pastor here

  606. I served as

  607. a youth pastor

  608. for 10 years

  609. at a church

  610. about 8 miles

  611. west of here.

  612. And I

  613. regularly

  614. experience

  615. a really interesting

  616. phenomenon.

  617. Here's what happens.

  618. In those years

  619. I was at

  620. Crossway

  621. I got to

  622. rub shoulders

  623. with a lot

  624. of young people.

  625. And so

  626. what happens

  627. now is this.

  628. 5, 10, 15

  629. years later

  630. I will bump

  631. into some

  632. of these young

  633. people

  634. and I will

  635. not recognize

  636. them at first.

  637. I'd be kind

  638. of like

  639. whoa you look

  640. familiar.

  641. And what I

  642. realize is

  643. that this person

  644. that I'm

  645. encountering

  646. is the same

  647. person I knew

  648. 5, 10 years

  649. ago.

  650. I just have

  651. this little

  652. snapshot

  653. of this person

  654. in my mind

  655. as a perpetual

  656. 7th grade

  657. prepubescent

  658. boy.

  659. And so I

  660. bump into it

  661. and I'm like

  662. whoa what

  663. happened to

  664. you?

  665. You're like

  666. 6 inches

  667. taller

  668. you've got

  669. a beard

  670. you've got

  671. a deep

  672. voice

  673. you're going

  674. to college

  675. I have this

  676. tendency of

  677. kind of locking

  678. people into

  679. a certain

  680. time.

  681. Limited picture

  682. of a person.

  683. We can make

  684. the same mistake

  685. with Jesus

  686. at Christmas

  687. time.

  688. We can keep

  689. Jesus

  690. as a perpetual

  691. infant

  692. lying in a

  693. manger.

  694. That's our

  695. snapshot of

  696. the Christmas

  697. Jesus.

  698. And it's

  699. only complicated

  700. by all the

  701. plastic baby

  702. Jesus out

  703. there.

  704. Sentimentality

  705. over these

  706. things can

  707. actually work

  708. against the

  709. wonder do

  710. his name.

  711. Can I help

  712. you wonder

  713. at this

  714. baby?

  715. Let's get

  716. our wonder

  717. on regarding

  718. this baby.

  719. Here's

  720. something I

  721. want to

  722. remind you

  723. of this

  724. person.

  725. This

  726. person

  727. born

  728. a baby

  729. lying in

  730. a manger

  731. he existed

  732. before

  733. he was

  734. born.

  735. The baby

  736. is the

  737. second

  738. person of

  739. the Trinity

  740. born of

  741. a woman.

  742. Jesus

  743. the man

  744. had

  745. eternally

  746. existed

  747. as the

  748. second

  749. person of

  750. the Trinity

  751. prior to

  752. his

  753. conception

  754. and birth.

  755. I know

  756. we're in

  757. deep waters

  758. right now.

  759. Dave

  760. referenced

  761. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  762. chapter

  763. 1.

  764. If you

  765. would

  766. flip to

  767. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  768. chapter

  769. 1 we

  770. read this.

  771. In the

  772. beginning

  773. was the

  774. word and

  775. the word

  776. was with

  777. God and

  778. the word

  779. was God.

  780. The word

  781. of course

  782. is the

  783. second

  784. person of

  785. the Trinity

  786. and he

  787. existed

  788. before he

  789. took on

  790. flesh.

  791. John

  792. 1

  793. 14.

  794. And the

  795. word

  796. became

  797. flesh and

  798. dwelt

  799. among us.

  800. Here's

  801. what you

  802. need to

  803. understand.

  804. The

  805. second

  806. person of

  807. the Trinity

  808. didn't

  809. come into

  810. existence

  811. at the

  812. birth of

  813. Jesus.

  814. The

  815. second

  816. person of

  817. the Trinity

  818. existed

  819. eternally

  820. before he

  821. was conceived

  822. as the

  823. baby Jesus.

  824. Get your

  825. wonder on.

  826. And

  827. more so

  828. this

  829. birth of

  830. this baby

  831. the second

  832. person of

  833. the Trinity

  834. who took

  835. on flesh

  836. flesh.

  837. This

  838. isn't the

  839. first

  840. appearance

  841. that he

  842. makes

  843. in the

  844. Bible.

  845. There

  846. are

  847. pre-incarnate

  848. appearances

  849. of the

  850. second

  851. person of

  852. the Trinity

  853. throughout

  854. the Old

  855. Testament.

  856. Now in

  857. the Old

  858. Testament

  859. the doctrine

  860. of the

  861. Trinity

  862. is not

  863. well

  864. developed

  865. and it

  866. gets more

  867. developed

  868. in the

  869. New

  870. Testament

  871. but we

  872. do see

  873. the members

  874. of the

  875. Trinity

  876. in the

  877. Old

  878. Testament.

  879. They're

  880. called

  881. Christophanies.

  882. We could

  883. point to a

  884. couple places.

  885. One theologian

  886. talks about

  887. the angel

  888. of the

  889. Lord as

  890. the appearing

  891. of the

  892. pre-incarnate

  893. Christ and

  894. he makes a

  895. pretty interesting

  896. case for that.

  897. And then

  898. there's the

  899. whole episode

  900. in Daniel

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  901. chapter 3

  902. where Shadrach,

  903. Meshach,

  904. and Abednego

  905. will not

  906. worship at

  907. Nebuchadnezzar's

  908. image and

  909. he gets

  910. really angry

  911. and he throws

  912. him in the

  913. fiery furnace

  914. and after

  915. he throws

  916. him in the

  917. fiery furnace

  918. he turns

  919. to his

  920. guys and

  921. he says

  922. guys didn't

  923. we throw

  924. three guys

  925. in because

  926. I see

  927. a fourth

  928. and the

  929. fourth is

  930. shining like

  931. a son of

  932. God.

  933. Who is

  934. that fourth

  935. guy?

  936. There's

  937. going to

  938. come a

  939. day when

  940. you are

  941. standing

  942. Lord willing

  943. in the

  944. New Jerusalem

  945. and you

  946. might be

  947. standing next

  948. to Shadrach,

  949. Meshach,

  950. and Abednego

  951. and you

  952. say Shadrach,

  953. Meshach,

  954. and Abednego

  955. who is

  956. that fourth

  957. guy?

  958. You know

  959. what they're

  960. going to

  961. do?

  962. He's the

  963. one at the

  964. center of

  965. all things

  966. right now.

  967. He's the

  968. one that's

  969. lighting up

  970. the New

  971. Jerusalem

  972. right now.

  973. That's the

  974. one that

  975. was with

  976. us.

  977. My

  978. favorite

  979. Christophany

  980. is in

  981. Joshua

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  982. chapter 5.

  983. Joshua is

  984. going out

  985. to battle.

  986. He bumps

  987. into this

  988. guy called

  989. the commander

  990. of the

  991. Lord's

  992. army.

  993. Joshua

  994. falls at

  995. this commander's

  996. feet and

  997. worships him.

  998. Do you know

  999. what the commander

  1000. of the Lord's

  1001. army does?

  1002. Nothing.

  1003. He lets

  1004. them worship

  1005. him.

  1006. And then he

  1007. says take

  1008. off your feet

  1009. for you're

  1010. standing on

  1011. holy ground.

  1012. Only God

  1013. says that.

  1014. So here we

  1015. have this

  1016. man who

  1017. is visible,

  1018. audible,

  1019. physically

  1020. present,

  1021. God in the

  1022. flesh in

  1023. Joshua

    Joshua 5 chapter mention

  1024. chapter 5.

  1025. life.

  1026. You see,

  1027. this is the

  1028. birth of

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. It's not the

  1031. first time the

  1032. second person of

  1033. the Trinity has

  1034. shown up.

  1035. Get your

  1036. wonder wrong.

  1037. The second

  1038. person of the

  1039. Trinity, this

  1040. baby is God

  1041. in the flesh.

  1042. I mean, his

  1043. conception in

  1044. Mary's womb in

  1045. Luke chapter 1

    Luke 1:34–37

  1046. verses 34 through

  1047. 37, it is a

  1048. triune event.

  1049. If you read it

  1050. carefully, you

  1051. see that God

  1052. most high overshadows

  1053. Mary, that's the

  1054. God the Father,

  1055. the God the

  1056. Spirit is the

  1057. actual one, the

  1058. agent of

  1059. conception.

  1060. In a miracle, we

  1061. just don't get.

  1062. The Spirit of God

  1063. causes the second

  1064. person of the

  1065. Trinity to be

  1066. incarnated into

  1067. Mary as a

  1068. zygote.

  1069. It's phenomenal.

  1070. And the result is

  1071. not a plastic baby

  1072. Jesus.

  1073. The result is the

  1074. second person of

  1075. the Trinity made

  1076. incarnate, fully

  1077. God, fully man, in

  1078. one person, and

  1079. Luke 1.35 calls

  1080. him holy, without

  1081. sin.

  1082. And I hope you

  1083. know he didn't

  1084. stay a baby.

  1085. He lived a

  1086. perfect life, a

  1087. life that none of

  1088. us could live.

  1089. And then he was

  1090. crucified on a

  1091. cross.

  1092. The Holy One was

  1093. crucified as a

  1094. criminal with king

  1095. of the Jews over

  1096. his head.

  1097. He was buried, he

  1098. was raised again on

  1099. the third day, just

  1100. like he said he

  1101. would, and proved

  1102. his victory over sin,

  1103. death, and the

  1104. devil.

  1105. And then he ascended

  1106. on high to now

  1107. where he's at right

  1108. now, at the right

  1109. hand of God.

  1110. He's interceding for

  1111. his church.

  1112. He is building his

  1113. church in whom the

  1114. gates of hell will

  1115. not prevail against

  1116. it.

  1117. And he's sitting on

  1118. G, waiting for O

  1119. from the Father to

  1120. come back.

  1121. And when he comes

  1122. back, he's going to

  1123. make all things right.

  1124. He's going to judge

  1125. the world with

  1126. equity.

  1127. And then he's going

  1128. to recreate the

  1129. heavens and the

  1130. earth.

  1131. And then we who

1132. bow our knee to him

  1133. now, we, when he

1134. comes back, we will be

  1135. with our Savior King

  1136. in his presence, in

  1137. his place, in, with

  1138. his people forever.

  1139. He's not a plastic

  1140. Jesus.

  1141. Don't limit him to

  1142. this snapshot of him

  1143. being a little baby.

  1144. He's not a baby right

  1145. now.

  1146. He became a baby.

1147. And when you get this

1148. full sense of who the

  1149. second person of the

  1150. Trinity is and what

  1151. he's done, we didn't

  1152. even talk about him

  1153. being the creator of

  1154. all things.

  1155. When you realize that

  1156. he took on human

  1157. flesh, Philippians 2,

1158. taking the form of a

  1159. servant, he would do

  1160. that.

  1161. It's amazing.

  1162. It's wonderful.

  1163. It should awe you.

  1164. We've looked at the

  1165. plan.

  1166. It's a plan for the

  1167. fullness of time.

  1168. We've looked at this

  1169. person, Jesus, who is

  1170. born of this virgin,

  1171. fulfilling prophecy, and

1172. he is God in the flesh.

  1173. But I want to ask a

  1174. question now of why?

  1175. What's the purpose of

1176. this plan that focuses on

  1177. this person?

  1178. Well, let's get your

1179. wonder on a little bit

  1180. more.

1181. The reason why Jesus, the

  1182. second person of the

  1183. Trinity, took on human

1184. flesh was not just to

1185. show us that he could do

  1186. it.

  1187. So I told you, it's not

  1188. for that reason.

1189. The second person of the

  1190. Trinity became human, took

  1191. on human flesh, was

  1192. incarnated for a purpose.

1193. And that purpose is the

1194. purpose for God's plan for

  1195. the fullness of time.

1196. The birth of Jesus is the

  1197. pivot point in God's

  1198. saving plan.

  1199. Galatians 4.4 says, at

1200. just the right time, God

1201. sent his son, born of a

1202. woman, born under the law,

1203. to redeem those under the

1204. law so that we could

  1205. experience the adoption of

  1206. sons and daughters.

1207. The purpose for why Jesus

1208. took on flesh, well, it was

1209. not to give us 24-hour

  1210. Christmas music.

1211. It was not so that we

1212. could have all sorts of

  1213. catalogs.

1214. It was not so that the U.S.

1215. economy can get a shot in

1216. the arm every so often

  1217. during the year.

1218. Jesus took on flesh not so

  1219. that we could enjoy

  1220. vacations.

1221. The reason why the second

1222. person of the Trinity took

1223. on flesh was to save, to

1224. rescue, to redeem sinners in

  1225. their sin.

1226. Back in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  1227. everything went sideways for

  1228. humankind.

1229. We were separated from God.

  1230. We were divided internally.

  1231. We were separated and

  1232. hostile to other human

  1233. beings.

1234. We were even separated from

  1235. creation.

1236. It was a comprehensive mess

  1237. made by sin.

1238. And so that puts us in the

  1239. very unique position of

  1240. needing a Savior.

1241. A Savior who will reconcile

1242. sinners to a holy God, who

  1243. will reunify a sinner's

  1244. divided self, who would

  1245. restore sinners who are

  1246. hostile with other sinners,

1247. and a Savior who will

  1248. recreate creation, wiping it

1249. off of its bondage to decay,

1250. and recreating it in its full

  1251. glory.

1252. The only Savior that can do

  1253. that is God Himself.

1254. Jesus is the perfect mediator

1255. between God and man, because

1256. Jesus is fully God and fully

  1257. man.

  1258. He is Emmanuel.

1259. And the reason why He took on

1260. flesh was to save you from

  1261. your sin.

  1262. Christmas time is salvation

  1263. time.

  1264. Merry Christmas is merry

  1265. salvation.

  1266. I mean, it's in the name.

1267. The name Jesus, Matthew 1,

1268. 21, literally means the Lord

  1269. saves.

1270. The second person of the

1271. Trinity took on human flesh,

1272. and He's named by God the

1273. Father as the Lord saves.

  1274. The Lord saves incarnate.

1275. Furthermore, if you look back

1276. to Isaiah, Isaiah has some two

  1277. very interesting prophecies.

1278. In Isaiah 7, 14, which has been

1279. read already, you have the

  1280. prophecy of a virgin conceiving a

1281. child, and His name being

  1282. Emmanuel.

  1283. A miraculous conception.

1284. And if you flip to the right in

1285. Isaiah, to Isaiah 53, you have a

1286. prophecy of the same one.

1287. But it's not His miraculous birth,

  1288. it's His substitutionary death.

1289. Same two prophecies speaking of the

  1290. same Emmanuel.

1291. So let me just read two verses

  1292. from Isaiah 53.

1293. Surely He has borne our griefs and

1294. carried our sorrows, yet we esteemed

1295. Him stricken, smitten by God and

  1296. afflicted.

1297. But He was pierced for our

  1298. transgressions.

1299. He was crushed for our iniquities.

1300. Upon Him was the chastisement that

  1301. brought us peace.

1302. And with His wounds, we are healed.

1303. Jesus came, took on flesh,

1304. ultimately to rescue sinners from

  1305. their sins.

  1306. That's God's plan for the fullness

  1307. of time.

1308. This Christmas time, December 2017,

1309. let's reclaim the wonder of

  1310. Christmas.

1311. Let's wonder at the plan.

1312. Let's wonder at this unique person,

  1313. Jesus.

1314. And let's wonder at the purpose.

1315. The purpose of Christmas is part of

1316. God's saving plan to rescue sinners from

  1317. their sin.

1318. So, when December 26 rolls around,

1319. you don't have to be like that dried out Christmas tree sitting in the city pickup thing.

1320. No, you can be wondering.

1321. You can be in awe.

1322. It doesn't have to get stale.

1323. No, get your wonder on.

  1324. Remember who this is.

1325. Remember what it's all about.

1326. Remember the scale of His plan.

1327. And when you remember that,

  1328. come December 26,

1329. you'll be looking to the new year

1330. knowing who this baby is.

  1331. Let's pray.

  1332. God in heaven,

1333. we thank you so much for

  1334. your word.

1335. We thank you for what your word has to say

  1336. about Jesus.

1337. And we thank you for what your word

1338. has to say about this

1339. plan for the fullness of time.

  1340. and we're thankful for

  1341. making known to us

  1342. that this plan

1343. for the fullness of time

1344. focused on the person of Jesus

1345. is a plan of salvation.

1346. God, would you help us

  1347. to live in that?

  1348. To wonder.

  1349. To be amazed.

  1350. And to rejoice.

  1351. God, may our singing

  1352. reflect the wonder

  1353. of who you are

  1354. and what you've done.

  1355. In Jesus' name,

  1356. Amen.

  1357. Amen.
