  1. Well, I don't know about you, but in our house, the Nye household has been pulling out some old favorite Christmas stories, both to watch and to read.

  2. One of my favorites is called Mooseltoe.

  3. Moose and mistletoe.

  4. It's really funny.

  5. You'll have to read it.

  6. It's one of my kids' favorites.

  7. My daughter absolutely adores the nutcracker tale.

  8. But probably my favorite is this one right here, The Grinch.

  9. Anybody like this one?

  10. It's become a cultural classic.

  11. And if you don't know the story, which I'm sure is a minority of you, all the Who's down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot.

  12. But the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville, did not.

  13. And that's how the book starts.

  14. And the Grinch is this horribly mean character who decides that he is going to steal Christmas from the Who's.

  15. And the way he does it is he becomes the anti-Santa Claus.

  16. And he dons a Santa Claus hat and coat.

  17. And he invades their homes.

  18. And instead of giving, he takes.

  19. And he sucks every Christmas tradition, decoration, food, everything out of their house.

  20. Even the log for the fire.

  21. So that the crumbs that he leaves in their houses are much too small for all of their mouths.

  22. And it is a horrible thing to do.

  23. He steals Christmas.

  24. And he loads it all up in his sleigh, pulled heroically by his little dog, Max.

  25. Who knows how he does it.

  26. And he takes it up 3,000 feet up to the top of Mount Crumpet to dump it.

  27. And he is standing there.

  28. And it's balanced on the peak of Mount Crumpet.

  29. And he's ready to shove it over the side.

  30. And he says, poo-poo to the Who's.

  31. He was grinchously humming.

  32. They're finding out now that no Christmas is coming.

  33. They're just waking up.

  34. I know just what they'll do.

  35. Their mouths will hang open a minute or two.

  36. And then all the Who's down in Whoville will all cry, boo-hoo.

  37. That's a noise, grinned the Grinch, that I simply must hear.

  38. So he paused.

  39. And the Grinch put a hand to his ear.

  40. And he did hear a sound rising over the snow.

  41. It started in low.

  42. And then it started to grow.

  43. You've got to love Dr. Seuss.

  44. But the sound wasn't sad.

  45. Why?

  46. This sound sounded merry.

  47. But it couldn't be so.

  48. But it was merry, very.

  49. He stared down at Whoville.

  50. The Grinch popped his eyes.

  51. Then he shook.

  52. And what he saw was a shocking surprise.

  53. Every Who down in Whoville,

  54. the tall and the small,

  55. was singing.

  56. Without any presents at all.

  57. He hadn't stopped Christmas from coming.

  58. It came.

  59. Somehow or other,

  60. it came just the same.

  61. This is when I start to tear up.

  62. Seriously, every time I read this to my kids,

  63. I'm like...

  64. And the Grinch,

  65. with his Grinch feet ice cold in the snow,

  66. stood puzzling and puzzling.

  67. How could it be so?

  68. It came without ribbons.

  69. It came without tags.

  70. It came without packages, boxes, or bags.

  71. And he puzzled three hours

  72. till his puzzler was sore.

  73. And then,

  74. the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before.

  75. Maybe Christmas, he thought,

  76. doesn't come from a store.

  77. Maybe Christmas, perhaps,

  78. means a little bit more.

  79. A little bit more.

  80. If a Grinch came to your house

  81. and sucked all the Christmas traditions,

  82. all the festivities,

  83. the lights,

  84. the cookies,

  85. the decorations,

  86. the activities,

  87. the presents,

  88. the stockings,

  89. sucked them completely out of your house.

  90. Is every physical evidence of Christmas

  91. completely gone?

  92. Would there be any Christmas left?

  93. Another way to ask this,

  94. my wife and I were talking about this the other day,

  95. what is the bare minimum,

  96. the lowest common denominator,

  97. that has to be there

  98. in order for Christmas

  99. to be Christmas?

  100. Is there a center of gravity

  101. to the whole Christmas season

  102. that if you could take it out,

  103. Christmas would just implode

  104. or it would just be an empty shell?

  105. You could almost ask the question this way,

  106. what is the glory

  107. of Christmas?

  108. What is the center of gravity

  109. that weighs it all down?

  110. What's the oomph

  111. of Christmas?

  112. When the Bible uses the word glory

  113. to describe something

  114. or someone,

  115. it's getting at the idea of oomph,

  116. weight,

  117. gravity,

  118. importance,

  119. fullness,

  120. excellence on display.

  121. So what is the weight?

  122. What is the oomph?

  123. What is the excellence on display

  124. at Christmas?

  125. Well,

  126. I'd like to argue this morning

  127. that the glory of Christmas

  128. is this.

  129. The glory of Christmas

  130. is that the fullness

  131. of God's glory

  132. came to dwell

  133. with us

  134. as one of us.

  135. The glory of Christmas

  136. is that the fullness

  137. of God's glory

  138. came to dwell with us

  139. as one of us.

  140. Now,

  141. I don't want you

  142. to move past that

  143. too quickly.

  144. Keep gazing at it.

  145. Look at that baby

  146. in the donkey's feeding trough.

  147. Get it in your mind's eye.

  148. He is the fullness of God

  149. who became a human being

  150. and did not cease

  151. from being God.

  152. Chew on that for a sec.

  153. It's the most weighty,

  154. the most wondrous,

  155. the most meaningful

  156. thing that has ever happened.

  157. God

  158. became

  159. man.

  160. God

  161. and humanity

  162. united

  163. in one person.

  164. The God-man.

  165. And he's right there

  166. in the manger

  167. swaddled

  168. and weak.

  169. All of their glories

  170. fade into the background.

  171. It's staggering.

  172. It jars you

  173. if you let it.

  174. That's the glory

  175. of Christmas.

  176. It's the glory

  177. of history.

  178. But why?

  179. Why

  180. would the fullness

  181. of God's glory

  182. come to dwell

  183. with us

  184. as one of us?

  185. What I'd like to do

  186. with the rest of our time

  187. together

  188. is I want to explore

  189. that question

  190. by

  191. sketching out

  192. the story

  193. of glory

  194. in the Bible.

  195. We're going to do it

  196. in three chapters.

  197. Chapter one

  198. is reflection

  199. and residence.

  200. Chapter two

  201. replacement

  202. and removal.

  203. Chapter three

  204. re-entry

  205. and renewal.

  206. You don't have to

  207. remember that.

  208. We're going to tackle

  209. them one at a time.

  210. I'll be in a couple

  211. different passages

  212. but we're going to

  213. start at Genesis

  214. chapter one.

  215. So if you would

  216. turn there with me.

  217. It's pretty easy to find.

  218. Very beginning

  219. of the Bible.

  220. Genesis chapter one.

  221. Let's explore

  222. this first chapter

  223. in our story

  224. of glory.

  225. Reflection

  226. and residence.

  227. reflection

  228. and residence.

  229. One of the things

  230. that I've had the

  231. privilege of doing

  232. for the most

  233. majority of my

  234. adult life

  235. is teaching

  236. teenagers.

  237. And I've either

  238. been a teacher

  239. or a pastor

  240. and there's a reason

  241. it's a privilege

  242. is because teenagers

  243. although they're

  244. really good at

  245. hiding it

  246. are almost as

  247. curious as my

  248. preschoolers.

  249. They ask

  250. good questions.

  251. Really good

  252. questions.

  253. As long as they

  254. can overcome

  255. the uncoolness

  256. of asking

  257. questions.

  258. And one of the

  259. consistent questions

  260. that I face

  261. as a Bible

  262. teacher or as a

  263. pastor for

  264. teenagers is

  265. why did God

  266. make everything

  267. anyway?

  268. What made him

  269. want to do

  270. this?

  271. Was he lonely?

  272. Was he bored?

  273. It's a great

  274. question.

  275. It's a fantastic

  276. question.

  277. Now I'm not

  278. going to read

  279. the whole

  280. creation account

  281. but what I

  282. want to do

  283. to begin to

  284. answer this

  285. question is

  286. begin to look

  287. at how good

  288. everything is

  289. and then that

  290. will lead us

  291. into the whole

  292. idea of

  293. reflection.

  294. So let's

  295. look at the

  296. beginning of

  297. the creation

  298. account.

  299. Verse 3

  300. God makes

  301. something.

  302. Let there be

  303. light he says

  304. and there was

  305. light and God

  306. saw that the

  307. light was

  308. good.

  309. So what he

  310. does is he

  311. speaks,

  312. creates something

  313. and steps

  314. back and

  315. assesses his

  316. creation and

  317. then he gives

  318. it his quality

  319. control seal of

  320. approval and he

  321. says good.

  322. It's good.

  323. The whole of

  324. creation from

  325. the cosmos to

  326. koala bears is

  327. soaked in

  328. goodness and

  329. not just

  330. impersonal

  331. goodness.

  332. No it's a

  333. reflection of

  334. the goodness of

  335. their creator.

  336. creator.

  337. The whole

  338. created order is

  339. an overflow.

  340. It's a reflection

  341. of the goodness

  342. of the creator.

  343. It's just a

  344. sample of his

  345. creativity, of his

  346. beauty, his

  347. strength, his

  348. majesty, not to

  349. mention his

  350. sense of humor.

  351. I mean who

  352. else would come

  353. up with the

  354. idea of a

  355. three-toed sloth

  356. that moves like

  357. .2 miles an

  358. hour?

  359. Or a flamingo

  360. with ginormous

  361. legs?

  362. psalm 19 sums

  363. it up the best.

  364. The heavens

  365. declare the

  366. glory of God.

  367. The sky above

  368. proclaims his

  369. handiwork.

  370. The universe is

  371. 24-7 busy

  372. shouting out the

  373. glory of the

  374. creator, reflecting

  375. his glory.

  376. glory.

  377. It's a spectacle.

  378. It's a lavish

  379. tribute to his

  380. glory.

  381. But wait, there's

  382. more.

  383. Skip on down to

  384. verse 26 and

  385. 27 of Genesis

  386. 1.

  387. Verses 26 and

  388. 27.

  389. Then God

  390. said, let us

  391. make man in

  392. our image after

  393. our likeness.

  394. And let them

  395. have dominion

  396. over the fish of

  397. the sea and

  398. over the birds of

  399. the heavens and

  400. over the livestock

  401. and over all the

  402. earth and over

  403. every creeping

  404. thing that creeps

  405. on the earth.

  406. So God created

  407. man in his own

  408. image.

  409. In the image of

  410. God, he created

  411. him.

  412. Male and female,

  413. he created them.

  414. So here he makes

  415. humans in his

  416. image.

  417. When you look at

  418. a mirror, you

  419. see yourself.

  420. But what you

  421. see is not

  422. you.

  423. It's a reflection

  424. of you.

  425. When God looks

  426. at humans, he

  427. sees a reflection,

  428. a mirror image

  429. of his glory.

  430. Sit and ponder

  431. that one for a

  432. sec.

  433. Every person

  434. that you see,

  435. every person

  436. sitting in this

  437. room, is

  438. is actively

  439. reflecting the

  440. image of the

  441. glory of the

  442. creator.

  443. And we are

  444. not God, but

  445. we image him.

  446. We reflect his

  447. glory in a way

  448. that sloths and

  449. whales and

  450. koala bears, they

  451. can't.

  452. They do exhibit his

  453. glory in many

  454. other ways, but

  455. not in the full

  456. way that we do.

  457. So we are like

  458. walking, talking

  459. mirrors.

  460. And we are

  461. designed to be

  462. glory reflectors,

  463. par excellence,

  464. scattering beams of

  465. his goodness and

  466. his wisdom like

  467. human disco

  468. balls, magnifying,

  469. making known his

  470. glory to all of

  471. creation and to

  472. each other.

  473. But what good is a

  474. mirror unless you're

  475. near it for it to

  476. reflect you?

  477. And now, we've got

  478. the idea of

  479. reflection down.

  480. Let's get to this

  481. idea of residence in

  482. this first chapter.

  483. It's incredible.

  484. Go to the beginning

  485. of chapter 2 in

  486. Genesis.

  487. Let's flip the page

  488. or look across the

  489. page.

  490. Chapter 2.

  491. Thus the heavens and

  492. the earth were

  493. finished, all the

  494. host of them.

  495. And on the seventh

  496. day, God finished

  497. his works that he

  498. had done, and he

  499. rested on the

  500. seventh day from

  501. all the work that

  502. he had done.

  503. So God blessed the

  504. seventh day and made

  505. it holy because on

  506. it God rested from

  507. all his work that he

  508. had done in

  509. creation.

  510. Now, I'm pretty

  511. sure we're all

  512. agreed that God

  513. resting doesn't mean

  514. he sat and took a

  515. breather.

  516. He's God.

  517. He doesn't get

  518. tired.

  519. What does it mean?

  520. Well, it means a

  521. couple of things, but

  522. one of the most

  523. exciting things that

  524. it points to is

  525. this.

  526. Genesis was written

  527. at a time when all

  528. the other pagan

  529. cultures around

  530. Israel worshipped

  531. lots of different

  532. gods and they built

  533. temples for them.

  534. And the way that

  535. these ancient pagan

  536. cultures described

  537. their gods living in

  538. their society,

  539. separate temples,

  540. it would say they

  541. rested in them.

  542. And so that rest

  543. language is pointing

  544. to an idea of a

  545. temple, of a divine

  546. residence.

  547. What's so cool about

  548. this is that this is

  549. saying that God has

  550. just made an entire

  551. universe temple for

  552. him to reside in with

  553. his glory reflectors,

  554. his image bearers,

  555. us, so that we

  556. would be near him,

  557. residing with him,

  558. with his great glory,

  559. reflecting and enjoying

  560. and delighting in him

  561. forever.

  562. God created the universe

  563. and he was

  564. so that brings us

  565. back to the great

  566. question I keep hearing

  567. from teenagers.

  568. Why did God make

  569. everything?

  570. I think we can

  571. summarize it by saying

  572. God created the

  573. universe not only to

  574. be a theater of

  575. reflecting his glory

  576. but also as a temple

  577. in which his glory

  578. could reside and be

  579. with his image bearers

  580. for his glory,

  581. which is, by the way,

  582. our great delight.

  583. That's God's plan.

  584. But tragically, as I'm

  585. sure that you know

  586. all too well, that's

  587. not how the story of

  588. glory continues.

  589. So we're ready for

  590. chapter two.

  591. Replacement and

  592. removal.

  593. Replacement and

  594. removal.

  595. We're going to be in

  596. Romans chapter one,

  597. so sorry for making you

  598. launch all the way

  599. across your Bible.

  600. So back, let's go to

  601. the New Testament,

  602. Romans chapter one.

  603. Matthew, Mark, Luke,

  604. and John are the four

  605. gospels, then go to

  606. Acts, and then Romans

  607. is right after that.

  608. I'll let you have a

  609. second to get there.

  610. One of the most

  611. condemning lines in all

  612. of scripture is found

  613. in Romans chapter one.

  614. And if you found it,

  615. we're going to be in

  616. verses 21 through 23.

  617. We'll start in verse

  618. 21.

  619. Romans chapter one,

  620. verse 21.

  621. As I read, listen for

  622. glory language and

  623. image language.

  624. For although they knew

  625. God, they did not honor

  626. him as God or give

  627. thanks to him, but they

  628. became futile in their

  629. thinking, and their

  630. foolish hearts were

  631. darkened.

  632. Claiming to be wise,

  633. they became fools and

  634. exchanged the glory of

  635. the immortal God for

  636. images resembling mortal

  637. man and birds and

  638. animals and reptiles.

  639. Part of the perverseness

  640. of sin is that we would

  641. take his precious glory

  642. that we were designed to

  643. soak in and reflect and

  644. delight in and replace

  645. it.

  646. Replace it with a lesser

  647. glory.

  648. Sin is exchanging the

  649. glory of the undying

  650. eternal God for images

  651. of time-bound mortal

  652. creatures.

  653. Now, Paul here is

  654. describing idolatry.

  655. Idolatry is the

  656. fundamental sin in the

  657. Bible.

  658. It is the unnaturally

  659. natural tendency of the

  660. human heart to get a

  661. glimpse of God's glory in

  662. some created thing that

  663. was meant to reflect him

  664. and point us to him and

  665. say, hmm, there is

  666. something good.

  667. It is created by God to

  668. reflect God's glory and

  669. to inspire me to delight

  670. in him.

  671. But you know what?

  672. I think I will take it,

  673. turn it into God instead,

  674. find my all in all in it

  675. and not in the one who

  676. made it.

  677. It is a classic example

  678. of this in Exodus 32.

  679. You don't have to turn

  680. there.

  681. Let's tell you the story.

  682. God's people, Israel, had

  683. already beheld his glory,

  684. not only in the incredible

  685. rescue from slavery in

  686. Egypt, but also they're

  687. right at the base of

  688. Mount Sinai and God's

  689. visual glory is on

  690. display right there on

  691. the mountain in the

  692. form of a thunderstorm.

  693. They've heard his voice

  694. speak.

  695. They've been following

  696. his glory cloud until

  697. it led him to the

  698. mountain.

  699. No other people in

  700. history have seen so

  701. many visual glory

  702. fireworks as these

  703. people, but right here

  704. at the base of a

  705. mountain where God is

  706. visually displaying his

  707. spectacular glory, they

  708. take a bunch of gold,

  709. they melt it into a

  710. image of a domestic

  711. animal, they call it

  712. God, and they worship

  713. it.

  714. Worshiping something that

  715. is even less than a

  716. copy of a copy when the

  717. original is right there

  718. in front of you.

  719. I mean, there are just

  720. no words for the sheer

  721. audacity and stupidity of

  722. this kind of glory

  723. replacing idolatry.

  724. And yet, this is us.

  725. This is me.

  726. This is you.

  727. We replace the glory of

  728. God with created things

  729. that were only meant to

  730. reflect him and point us

  731. to him.

  732. We exchange the eternal

  733. pleasure of his glorious

  734. presence for short-lived

  735. thrills of pleasure, power,

  736. wealth, status, recognition,

  737. entertainment, fill in the

  738. blank.

  739. And in so doing, not only do

  740. we replace his glory, but we

  741. ridicule it and we rob God

  742. of his glory.

  743. We ridicule it by reducing

  744. his infinite goodness to a

  745. petty thing and exchanging

  746. and exalting his creation

  747. over him.

  748. And worst of all, we rob him

  749. of his glory by seeking to

  750. exalt ourselves over him.

  751. We crowd him out of his

  752. rightful place, demanding

  753. recognition and ultimately

  754. worship for ourselves.

  755. If we were designed to be

  756. mirrors reflecting the glory

  757. of God, then we have

  758. become mirrors that bent

  759. in on ourselves, seeking

  760. to reflect ourselves, seeking

  761. to delight in ourselves.

  762. The problem is that mirrors

  763. that do that get shattered.

  764. And that's what happens to

  765. us.

  766. There is a natural consequence

  767. to this too.

  768. We've looked at the

  769. replacement.

  770. Now let's look at the

  771. removal.

  772. We get removed from his

  773. glorious presence, which by

  774. the way is our only good and

  775. our greatest good.

  776. If you flip back to Genesis for

  777. just a moment, I'd like to show

  778. you something.

  779. The nice thing is it's all the

  780. way back to the beginning.

  781. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  782. Adam and Eve have just done some

  783. glory replacing.

  784. They've replaced God's glory with

  785. the glory of self.

  786. They have replaced his rule with

  787. their own self-rule.

  788. And they've declared themselves

  789. independent from God.

  790. And then his glory draws near.

  791. Look at verse 8 of chapter 3.

  792. Genesis 3 verse 8.

    Genesis 3:8

  793. And they heard the sound of the

  794. Lord God walking in the garden in

  795. the cool of the day.

  796. And the man and his wife hid

  797. themselves from the presence of the

  798. Lord God among the trees of the

  799. garden.

  800. Their greatest delight, the very joy

  801. that they were made for, draws near

  802. and they run.

  803. They remove themselves from his

  804. presence.

  805. They hide in fear and shame.

  806. And this leads us to verse 23 of the

  807. same chapter.

  808. Therefore the Lord God sent them out of

  809. the garden of Eden to work the ground

  810. from which he is taken.

  811. God finishes and formalizes the

  812. removal process.

  813. Adam and Eve began it.

  814. And then God

  815. finishes it up.

  816. He sent them out from his presence.

  817. He blocked them off from his glory.

  818. Which they themselves have already

  819. done.

  820. And if you keep on reading Genesis,

  821. the evil and the perversion that

  822. results from this removal from his

  823. glory is shocking.

  824. And it's heartbreaking.

  825. But I don't think we need to read

  826. Genesis to know that, do we?

  827. You and I know that pretty well.

  828. We're very well aware of our unnaturally

  829. natural tendency to replace God's

  830. glory and to rob him of his glory.

  831. To remove ourselves far from him.

  832. Each one of us knows pretty well that

  833. sense of shame and I want to hide and

  834. get out of here.

  835. I don't want to be exposed.

  836. We are those curved in mirrors.

  837. Those mirrors bent in on ourselves.

  838. And we're shattered and we're broken.

  839. But the story of glory continues.

  840. And there's a light of hope that dawns.

  841. Chapter 3.

  842. Re-entry and renewal.

  843. Re-entry and renewal.

  844. Have you ever been reading a story or

  845. watching a movie and then all of a

  846. sudden an old character that you

  847. thought was written out of the story

  848. suddenly re-enters after an absence?

  849. I'm thinking like Gandalf from Lord of the

  850. Rings.

  851. If you haven't, I'm totally going to

  852. spoil it for you.

  853. I'm sorry.

  854. He falls into the abyss.

  855. You think he's gone.

  856. And then he comes back.

  857. He re-enters the story and hope

  858. dawns again.

  859. Well, the same thing happens with God's

  860. glory in the story of glory.

  861. God has been at work since the garden.

  862. He's been initiating relationship by

  863. grace with a guy named Abraham.

  864. He's given, he's made a people out of

  865. his descendants and he's called the

  866. people to himself.

  867. Even rescued them from Egypt.

  868. And then his glory shows up again in

  869. the book of Exodus.

  870. Would you turn to Exodus 24 for me?

  871. Exodus 24.

  872. Referenced it earlier with the story of

  873. the golden calf, but

  874. God's glory shows up on a mountain and

  875. God's people are beholding it.

  876. And

  877. it makes you realize

  878. his glory is re-entering.

  879. There's hope still.

  880. Only this time

  881. his glory is veiled.

  882. And it's a little scary.

  883. So

  884. look at verses 15 through 18

  885. in chapter 24.

  886. This gives us just a taste of

  887. what God's people get to see.

  888. Verse 15.

  889. Moses went up on the mountain

  890. and the cloud covered the mountain.

  891. The cloud is God's glory

  892. made manifest.

  893. The glory of the Lord dwelt

  894. on Mount Sinai

  895. and the cloud covered it

  896. six days.

  897. And on the seventh day

  898. he called to Moses out of the midst

  899. of the cloud.

  900. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord

  901. was like a devouring fire

  902. on the top of the mountain

  903. in the sight of the people of Israel.

  904. Moses entered the cloud

  905. and went up on the mountain.

  906. And Moses was on the mountain

  907. 40 days

  908. and 49.

  909. And so

  910. and there's another part of Exodus

  911. where people are like

  912. Moses

  913. you got to handle this.

  914. We can't bear

  915. being so close

  916. to this glory.

  917. It's frightening to us.

  918. And for a glory replacing

  919. and glory robbing people

  920. the pure glory of God

  921. would be kind of frightening.

  922. So Moses goes up

  923. as a mediator.

  924. He's a middle man.

  925. He's a priest

  926. who can relate to God

  927. on behalf of the people.

  928. He can also relate to the people

  929. on behalf of God.

  930. And God wants

  931. to reside

  932. with his people

  933. so they can see

  934. his glory

  935. and be satisfied

  936. with his glory.

  937. His glory is reentered

  938. but it has to be veiled.

  939. It can't be unveiled.

  940. They would die.

  941. And also

  942. there has to be a mediator.

  943. Someone to go back and forth.

  944. And so

  945. to summarize

  946. the rest of the story

  947. of Exodus

  948. his people can't go up

  949. to be where he is

  950. because of their sins

  951. so he comes down

  952. and comes to be

  953. where they are.

  954. He gives Moses

  955. these really fancy

  956. instructions

  957. to build a tent

  958. called a tabernacle

  959. so that his glory

  960. can reside

  961. with his people

  962. and yet be veiled.

  963. Veiled in a tent.

  964. And the glory

  965. has to have priests

  966. mediators

  967. who can relate to

  968. God on behalf

  969. of the people

  970. and relate to the people

  971. on behalf of God.

  972. But even though

  973. it's veiled

  974. and it needs a mediator

  975. the glory has reentered.

  976. Hope.

  977. There's movement.

  978. The plot's going.

  979. And once his people

  980. get to the land

  981. that he has for them

  982. the land is pictured

  983. in the Bible

  984. as a place

  985. where it's kind of

  986. a recapitulation

  987. of Eden

  988. of the garden

  989. so that

  990. God's glory

  991. and God's people

  992. can be together

  993. again.

  994. As long as

  995. his glory is veiled

  996. in a temple

  997. and there's mediators

  998. priests

  999. and they obey

  1000. his word

  1001. and they follow him.

  1002. Israel failed

  1003. miserably.

  1004. They vomit.

  1005. Ultimately

  1006. in the book

  1007. of Ezekiel

  1008. he gets a vision

  1009. of the glory

  1010. of God

  1011. departing

  1012. out of the temple

  1013. and standing

  1014. outside the city

  1015. of Jerusalem

  1016. in judgment

  1017. and Israel

  1018. gets demolished

  1019. by the Babylonians

  1020. and God's people

  1021. are banished.

  1022. They've been removed

  1023. from God's presence

  1024. once again.

  1025. But then

  1026. in Ezekiel 43

  1027. there's this promise

  1028. that God's glory

1029. is going to come back.

1030. He's going to come back

  1031. and reenter

  1032. a new temple.

  1033. And

  1034. it's going to bring

  1035. renewal

  1036. to the human heart

  1037. to be able

1038. to be in God's presence

  1039. and live

  1040. and reflect his presence

  1041. once again.

  1042. Well time passes

  1043. a new temple

  1044. is built

  1045. but nothing like

  1046. Ezekiel's vision

  1047. comes to pass.

  1048. And

  1049. God's people

  1050. are wondering

  1051. when will God's glory

  1052. come to reside

  1053. with us again?

  1054. When is he going

  1055. to reenter

  1056. and it's going

  1057. to be the same

  1058. as it was?

1059. When will he renew us

  1060. so that we can

  1061. behold his glory

1062. like we were meant to?

  1063. That's getting us ready

  1064. for the glory

  1065. of Christmas.

  1066. If you turn

  1067. to John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

1068. If we look at John 1

  1069. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

  1070. in the New Testament

  1071. fourth book in

1072. If we look at the gospel

  1073. of John

  1074. the first five verses

  1075. he describes

  1076. this person

  1077. named the word

  1078. in the beginning

  1079. was the word

  1080. and the word

  1081. was with God

  1082. and the word

  1083. was God

1084. He was in the beginning

  1085. with God

  1086. the ultimate glory

  1087. reflector

  1088. All things were made

  1089. through him

  1090. and without him

  1091. was not anything

  1092. made that was made

  1093. in him was life

  1094. and the life

  1095. was the light

  1096. of men

  1097. the light shines

  1098. in the darkness

  1099. and the darkness

  1100. has not overcome it

1101. so we get a glimpse

  1102. of hope

  1103. there's a person

  1104. out there

  1105. who is God

  1106. and yet he's

  1107. distinct from God

  1108. and all things

  1109. were made through him

  1110. he is God's

  1111. perfect self-reflection

  1112. he's the ultimate mirror

  1113. because he is God

  1114. and check out

  1115. what verse 14

  1116. says about him

  1117. this is the glory

  1118. of Christmas

  1119. and the word

  1120. became flesh

  1121. and the word

  1122. became

  1123. flesh

  1124. God's

  1125. perfect

  1126. mirror

  1127. the ultimate

  1128. image

  1129. of God

  1130. the ultimate

  1131. glory

  1132. reflecting

  1133. mirror

  1134. became

  1135. flesh

  1136. God's glory

  1137. is laying

  1138. on a feeding trough

  1139. he's visible

  1140. we can see

  1141. his glory

  1142. look at the rest

  1143. of the verse

  1144. verse 14

  1145. the word

  1146. became flesh

  1147. flesh

  1148. and dwelt

  1149. among us

  1150. the word

  1151. in the original

  1152. language

  1153. is literally

  1154. to pitch

  1155. your tent

  1156. God

  1157. God's

  1158. fullness

  1159. of glory

  1160. has come

  1161. to pitch

  1162. his tent

  1163. among us

  1164. just as God's

  1165. glory resided

  1166. with his people

  1167. in a veiled

  1168. tent

  1169. in the wilderness

  1170. now God

  1171. has pitched

  1172. his tent

  1173. to reside

  1174. among us

  1175. once again

  1176. but not

  1177. as a place

  1178. as a person

  1179. in a temple

  1180. of flesh

  1181. and bone

  1182. just like the

  1183. Christmas hymn

  1184. that we sang

  1185. Hark the Herald

  1186. veiled in flesh

  1187. the Godhead

  1188. see

  1189. hail

  1190. incarnate

  1191. deity

  1192. and the next

  1193. phrase

  1194. we have seen

  1195. it

  1196. we have seen

  1197. his glory

  1198. glory as of

  1199. the only son

  1200. from the father

  1201. full of grace

  1202. and truth

  1203. God's glory

  1204. has re-entered

  1205. the story

  1206. pursuing

  1207. his cracked

  1208. mirrors

  1209. pursuing

  1210. his broken

  1211. image bearers

  1212. he arrived

  1213. and he came

  1214. to renew

  1215. us

  1216. and if we

  1217. see

  1218. not in the way

  1219. that John

  1220. the apostle

  1221. saw

  1222. he got to see

  1223. with physical eyes

  1224. but plenty of people

  1225. saw Jesus

  1226. with physical eyes

  1227. and didn't see

  1228. the way that really

  1229. counts

  1230. which is seeing

  1231. and trusting

  1232. and believing

  1233. and understanding

  1234. by faith

  1235. if we see

  1236. this child

  1237. the glory

  1238. of God

  1239. as the one

  1240. who is

  1241. God's ultimate

  1242. mirror

  1243. came to restore

  1244. God's broken

  1245. mirror

  1246. God's broken

  1247. glory reflectors

  1248. then it renews us

  1249. and the fullest

  1250. display

  1251. is in John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1252. chapter 12

  1253. feel free to

  1254. skip over there

  1255. real quick

  1256. in John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1257. chapter 12

  1258. Jesus just

  1259. enters Jerusalem

  1260. for the last

  1261. time

  1262. he's there

  1263. ultimately

  1264. to die

  1265. and the way

  1266. that God

  1267. talks about

  1268. Jesus' glory

  1269. in the book

  1270. of John

  1271. is not

  1272. in terms

  1273. of

  1274. the mount

  1275. of transfiguration

  1276. where his

  1277. clothes are

  1278. shining

  1279. and his

  1280. face is

  1281. beaming

  1282. but it's

  1283. in terms

  1284. of this

  1285. look at

  1286. verse 23

  1287. of John

    John 12 chapter mention

  1288. chapter 12

  1289. this is the

  1290. glory

  1291. of

  1292. the

  1293. son of

  1294. God

  1295. the hour

  1296. has come

  1297. Jesus said

  1298. for the

  1299. son of man

  1300. to be glorified

  1301. truly

  1302. truly

  1303. I say

  1304. to you

  1305. unless

  1306. a grain

  1307. of wheat

  1308. falls

  1309. into the

  1310. earth

  1311. and dies

  1312. it remains

  1313. alone

  1314. but if

  1315. it dies

  1316. it bears

  1317. much

  1318. fruit

  1319. skip down

  1320. to verse

  1321. 27

  1322. now my

  1323. soul

  1324. is troubled

  1325. and what

  1326. shall I

  1327. say

  1328. father

  1329. save me

  1330. from this

  1331. hour

  1332. but for

  1333. this

  1334. purpose

  1335. I have

  1336. come

  1337. to this

  1338. hour

  1339. father

  1340. glorify

  1341. your

  1342. name

  1343. and then

  1344. a voice

  1345. came

  1346. from heaven

  1347. I have

  1348. glorified

  1349. it

  1350. and I

  1351. will

  1352. glorify

  1353. it

  1354. again

  1355. so what

  1356. is the

  1357. glory

  1358. of Christ

  1359. what is

  1360. the

  1361. fullest

  1362. display

  1363. of God's

  1364. glory

  1365. that we

  1366. get to

  1367. behold

  1368. at Christmas

  1369. time

  1370. is that

  1371. this baby

  1372. who is

  1373. the glory

  1374. of God

  1375. came to

  1376. glorify

  1377. God

  1378. by dying

  1379. on a

  1380. cross

  1381. the place

  1382. it's this

  1383. beautiful

  1384. good news

  1385. where he

  1386. took on

  1387. the doomed

  1388. fate

  1389. of glory

  1390. replacers

  1391. and glory

  1392. robbers

  1393. like us

  1394. as the

  1395. perfect

  1396. glory

  1397. reflector

  1398. as our

  1399. substitute

  1400. and this

  1401. is what

  1402. renews

  1403. us

  1404. Paul

  1405. says in

  1406. 2nd

  1407. Corinthians

  1408. that as

  1409. we behold

  1410. this stunning

  1411. glory

  1412. of this

  1413. good news

  1414. we are

  1415. changed

  1416. we are

  1417. transformed

  1418. in 2nd

  1419. Corinthians

  1420. he says

  1421. this is the

  1422. light of

  1423. the gospel

  1424. of the

  1425. glory

  1426. of Christ

  1427. who is

  1428. the image

  1429. of God

  1430. beholding

  1431. this glory

  1432. we get

  1433. to be

  1434. transformed

  1435. into his

  1436. same image

  1437. from one

  1438. degree of

  1439. glory to

  1440. another

  1441. when the

  1442. Grinch

  1443. beheld

  1444. the glory

  1445. of Christmas

  1446. when he

  1447. realized that

  1448. Christmas

  1449. isn't from

  1450. a store

  1451. but it's

  1452. something a

  1453. little bit

  1454. more

  1455. his heart

  1456. grew three

  1457. sizes that

  1458. day

  1459. he was

  1460. transformed

  1461. beholding the

  1462. glory of

  1463. Christmas

  1464. Christmas

  1465. and that

  1466. is God's

  1467. intent for

  1468. us

  1469. to behold

  1470. his glory

  1471. dwelling

  1472. among us

  1473. residing

  1474. with us

  1475. to renew

  1476. us

  1477. and one

  1478. day he'll

  1479. return

  1480. with unshielded

  1481. glory

  1482. and we will

  1483. behold him

  1484. face to face

  1485. we will

  1486. reflect his

  1487. glory like

  1488. disco balls

  1489. what we

  1490. once hid

  1491. from

  1492. which

  1493. once would

  1494. have destroyed

  1495. us

  1496. will then

  1497. give us

  1498. eternal

  1499. delight

  1500. and his

  1501. glory will

  1502. reside with

  1503. us forever

  1504. Revelation 21

  1505. is just

  1506. astounding

  1507. go home and

  1508. give it a

  1509. read

  1510. it's the

  1511. new residence

  1512. that we will

  1513. have with

  1514. him

  1515. and listen

  1516. to this

  1517. and I saw

  1518. no temple

  1519. in that

  1520. city

  1521. no need

  1522. for veiled

  1523. glory there

  1524. for its

  1525. temple is

  1526. the Lord

  1527. God the

  1528. Almighty

  1529. and the

  1530. Lamb

  1531. whereas

  1532. before

  1533. the universe

  1534. was a

  1535. temple of

  1536. God's glory

  1537. now

  1538. the new

  1539. Jerusalem

  1540. he is

  1541. the temple

  1542. and the

  1543. city has

  1544. no need

  1545. of sun

  1546. or moon

  1547. to shine

  1548. on it

  1549. for the

  1550. glory of

  1551. God gives

  1552. it light

  1553. and its

  1554. lamp

  1555. is the

  1556. Lamb

  1557. full

  1558. renewal

  1559. all because

  1560. of that

  1561. glorious

  1562. reentry

  1563. this is the

  1564. glory of

  1565. Christmas

  1566. feast on

  1567. it church

  1568. is this the

  1569. glory of your

  1570. Christmas

  1571. we are

  1572. distracted

  1573. people

  1574. maybe you

  1575. came in

  1576. pretty

  1577. distracted

  1578. and you

  1579. can't see

  1580. this

  1581. we are

  1582. weak

  1583. people

  1584. maybe you

  1585. came in

  1586. feeling pretty

  1587. weak and

  1588. empty and

  1589. exhausted

  1590. by life

  1591. we are

  1592. broken

  1593. people

  1594. we are

  1595. shattered

  1596. by sin

  1597. God's

  1598. glory is

  1599. able to

  1600. renew us

  1601. whether

  1602. broken

  1603. distracted

  1604. or weak

  1605. lift your

  1606. eyes to

  1607. the glory

  1608. of Christmas

  1609. let's

  1610. pray

  1611. father

  1612. thank you

  1613. for the

  1614. immense

  1615. mercy that

  1616. you have

  1617. shown

  1618. giving us

  1619. new birth

  1620. into a

  1621. living hope

  1622. of your

  1623. glory

  1624. your glory

  1625. veiled in

  1626. flesh in the

  1627. son of God

  1628. who came to

  1629. restore broken

  1630. glory reflectors

  1631. like us

  1632. God I pray

  1633. that this

  1634. truth would

  1635. sink down

  1636. deep into

  1637. our hearts

  1638. and that

  1639. we would

  1640. like the

  1641. Grinch

  1642. be changed

  1643. father I pray

  1644. particularly that

  1645. you would

  1646. help our

  1647. distracted eyes

  1648. to fixate

  1649. on the

  1650. glory of

  1651. Jesus

  1652. help those

  1653. father who

  1654. are weak

  1655. to attach

  1656. themselves by

  1657. faith and

  1658. then be made

  1659. strong

  1660. to the glory

  1661. of Jesus

  1662. father I pray

  1663. for those who

  1664. are broken

  1665. shattered by

  1666. sin

  1667. pray that they

  1668. would find

  1669. renewal

  1670. in the glory

  1671. of Jesus

  1672. we thank you

  1673. God for your

  1674. goodness and

  1675. kindness to us

  1676. in Jesus name

  1677. amen
