  1. Well, I have a shopping theory.

  2. There are two basic kinds of shoppers.

  3. There are the grazer shoppers.

  4. These are the folks that when they shop, they go from aisle to aisle, basically grazing

  5. as they shop, kind of looking at different racks and imagining who this would look good

  6. on and maybe accessorizing all the while.

  7. And I am prone to graze shop when I enter into a chainsaw shop.

  8. I look at the different engine displacements and the different sizes of these chainsaws

  9. and then I start accessorizing and thinking about the leather chaps I can be wearing and

  10. the helmet with the kind of come down face protecting on it.

  11. I didn't, man, I just graze in a chainsaw shop for a good half hour to an hour.

  12. And then there are the missional shoppers.

  13. These are the folks that before they leave their house, they already know what they're

  14. going to purchase.

  15. They arrive and they are on a mission.

  16. They have a singularity of focus.

  17. I tend to be on the missional side of shopping myself.

  18. And so if my wife Jenny and I are driving to Menards in my pickup truck, I tend to have

  19. an already sense of what I need to purchase.

  20. I have a layout of Menards in my mind.

  21. I know I need to hit plumbing and then I hit windows and then the candy aisle and then I'm

  22. out.

  23. And if I pull up and Jenny says something to the extent of, Mike, can we do this in about

  24. 12 minutes?

  25. I rise to that.

  26. I'm like, oh, we'll have seven minutes to spare.

  27. I will sprint because I'm on a mission.

  28. When we talk about mission, we're talking about a singularity of focus.

  29. And our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, he is on a mission.

  30. Christmas season has gone.

  31. Our Christmas tree is lying horizontal in the Christmas tree graveyard in Lincoln Park right

  32. now.

  33. But the incarnate Christ, he remains.

  34. He's risen.

  35. He's reigning.

  36. And he's carrying out his mission through his church to spread the joy of the gospel to

  37. the nations.

  38. And so this morning, what I want to convince you of is that not only is the risen incarnate

  39. Christ on mission, he's called you to be a part of his mission too.

  40. He's called you to be on mission with him to bring the joy of salvation to the nations.

  41. Christmas has everything to do with God's mission to save sinners from their sins.

  42. So this morning, we're going to return to that classic Christmas passage in Luke chapter 2, where

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  43. the angel declares to the shepherds the good news that a Savior has been born.

  44. And what I want to help you to see this morning is that this angel came announcing the good news,

  45. that there was great joy.

  46. It was a grand task for the peoples.

  47. And then we're going to wrap up tonight or this morning by talking about the God promise.

  48. So four moves this morning, if you want to follow me, the good news, which is the message of the mission,

  49. the great joy, which is the delight of the mission, the grand task, which is the scope of the mission.

  50. And then we're going to close by looking at the God promise, God's power for the mission.

  51. So Christ is on a mission, the risen incarnate Christ, and he's called us to be a part of it.

  52. So let me just read Luke chapter 2, verses 10 and 11, just to remind you.

    Luke 2:10

  53. And the angel said to them, fear not, for behold, I bring you good news, good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  54. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  55. The good news.

  56. This angel came to the shepherds in the fields with a verbal announcement.

  57. The mission, the message of the mission is proclamational.

  58. We declare it.

  59. We announce it.

  60. And the angel of the Lord in chapter 2 of Luke, verses 10 and 11, he comes proclaiming Christ.

  61. A Savior has been born that day in the city of David.

  62. So he's a descendant of David.

  63. He is the Christ.

  64. He is the Lord, God incarnate.

  65. And so what we see happening in Luke chapter 2 is that Luke begins his gospel with the announcement,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  66. the angelic announcement of the birth of the Christ.

  67. That's good news.

  68. But it's not the capital G, capital N good news.

  69. The good news of the birth is part of the capital G, capital N good news of the gospel.

  70. If you flip in your Bibles to the end of the gospel of Luke to Luke 24, I want you to see the rest of the good news.

  71. And as you're flipping your pages to Luke 24, let me just remind you that right now you're fast forwarding through the life of Jesus.

  72. You're fast forwarding through his teaching, his healing, his casting out demons, his raising people from the dead.

  73. And as you're getting to the end of the gospel of Luke, you are fast forwarding through his crucifixion.

  74. The first Good Friday, when the Lord Jesus Christ hung on a cross.

  75. And at the ninth hour, the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

  76. And Luke records that immediately after that happened, Jesus says, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.

  77. Here's why I'm telling you this.

  78. That's good news.

  79. It's good news.

  80. Something happened when Jesus was on the cross.

  81. Something happened that shows up in the temple.

  82. Something happens when he gives up his spirit.

  83. Something happened right there.

  84. And so, as we move forward, Jesus is buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.

  85. And we are fast forwarding into Luke 24, where early in Luke 24, it's the first, it's the resurrection day.

  86. Early that morning, Jesus is raised from the dead.

  87. The tomb is empty.

  88. And what we see happening throughout 24, starting in verse 36, is that the risen Christ Jesus shows up in Jerusalem,

  89. standing in the midst of his disciples in the upper room.

  90. And they're shocked.

  91. They thought he was dead and gone.

  92. But here he is standing before them.

  93. And he convinces them.

  94. He seeks to convince them that it's really him raised bodily, incarnate from the dead.

  95. Verse 39, he urges them to touch him.

  96. He shows them his hands and his feet.

  97. The very marks of the sacrifice on the cross.

  98. He, in verse 41, asks them for something to eat.

  99. And they give him some broiled fish, and he eats it.

  100. What Luke is making plain is that Jesus, raised from the dead, remains incarnate.

  101. And then what we see happening in Luke 24 is that the risen incarnate Christ tells his disciples in verse 44,

  102. if you pick up there with me, he says,

  103. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you.

  104. These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you.

  105. Here's what Jesus is saying.

  106. That everything that just happened, everything that you witnessed,

  107. my suffering, my crucifixion, and now my resurrection,

  108. everything that you have seen is what I was telling you about before we got to Jerusalem.

  109. It's the very things I was foretelling.

  110. Now, if you remember from our study of the book of Matthew,

  111. three times Jesus tells his disciples before they get to Jerusalem

  112. that when they get there, he's going to be handed over,

  113. he's going to be killed, and he's going to be raised from the dead.

  114. And so what Jesus is saying here is that,

  115. Hey, what I told you would happen has happened.

  116. And in verse 44, at the latter half, he says,

  117. That everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.

  118. My suffering, my crucifixion, my resurrection,

  119. it's all fulfillment of the law and the prophets and the Psalms.

  120. The Old Testament is fulfilled in its anticipation in me.

  121. What we're talking about here is the heart of the gospel.

  122. The essential message of the mission.

  123. That not only did God take on flesh,

  124. but this same God suffered.

  125. This same God was crucified.

  126. This same God was raised from the dead.

  127. And so when the apostle Paul talks about this message in 1 Corinthians 15,

  128. do you know what he calls it?

  129. He says,

  130. This is the matter of first importance.

  131. Christ, who he is and what he's done,

  132. is of first importance.

  133. It's all about Jesus.

  134. It's all about who he is,

  135. God incarnate and what he's done.

  136. Suffered, crucified, raised.

  137. This is good news.

  138. This is full good news.

  139. Jesus had to take on flesh in order to suffer,

  140. in order to be crucified,

  141. and in order to be raised from the dead.

  142. Now maybe you're asking yourself a question like this.

  143. How is God incarnate dying on a cross good news?

  144. I mean, seriously, birth announcements, that's good news.

  145. I get that.

  146. But an obituary, the news of someone's death,

  147. that doesn't sound like good news.

  148. Something happened.

  149. Jesus' death accomplished something.

  150. That makes it good news.

  151. Now some hear this and they may think,

  152. Well, this sounds all made up.

  153. Or they hear this and they start thinking,

  154. This is some kind of psychological crutch.

  155. Or others hear this and say,

  156. The raising of a dead man?

  157. That's scientifically impossible.

  158. But if you are in the room this morning,

  159. And you personally are experiencing the real guilt over past sin.

  160. If you personally know firsthand the shame over past sin.

  161. And if you personally find yourself struggling with the real fear.

  162. What does this mean for me when I die?

  163. I've done this.

  164. What does God think about that?

  165. And what does that mean for my eternity?

  166. If you find yourself there.

  167. Remember this news of Jesus,

  168. The incarnate God suffering,

  169. Crucified and raised.

  170. This is good news for you.

  171. Jesus, our Emmanuel,

  172. Didn't die accidentally on the cross.

  173. He purposely died on the cross.

  174. He died as a substitute for those who realize that they're truly guilty before God.

  175. If you know you've got hell to pay for your sin,

  176. This is good news for you.

  177. So my friend, if you're struggling under the weight of your own sin,

  178. You've come into a building at the right time.

  179. To hear God speak a word to you,

  180. That will bring great joy to you.

  181. The heart of this good news,

  182. Of which the angel in Luke 2 starts to declare,

  183. That God has become a man.

  184. Merry Christmas.

  185. Amen.

  186. He's been born,

  187. But he lived a perfect life.

  188. He suffered, he died, and he was raised,

  189. In order to substitute himself for sinners,

  190. So that they would be forgiven of their sins.

  191. The very thing that you fear, my friend,

  192. That your sin stands against you,

  193. Jesus has addressed by dying on the cross.

  194. He references himself as a ransom.

  195. He came as a ransom to pay for your sin.

  196. That's really good news.

  197. This is, if you look in verse 47,

  198. Jesus, verse 46, it says,

  199. It's written that the Christ should suffer,

  200. And on the third day rise from the dead,

  201. And that repentance and forgiveness of sins

  202. Should be proclaimed.

  203. It's through the incarnation,

  204. Suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus,

  205. That God offers the forgiveness of sins

  206. To any sinner around the world.

  207. It's wonderful good news.

  208. But you have to be willing to acknowledge the fact

  209. That you're a sinner.

  210. This is not good news to those who don't think

  211. That their sin has a consequence with a living God.

  212. At the beginning of Luke,

  213. The good news is a birth announcement.

  214. A Savior's been born,

  215. Christ the Lord God.

  216. And by the end of Luke,

  217. The good news comes into full view.

  218. This Savior born,

  219. Christ the Lord,

  220. He suffered,

  221. He died,

  222. And was raised.

  223. So,

  224. And this is the essential content

  225. Of the message of the gospel.

  226. In which God offers full forgiveness,

  227. Full pardon,

  228. For all of your sin.

  229. You see,

  230. Christmas,

  231. Merry Christmas,

  232. It's about salvation.

  233. It's about God coming to save.

  234. The incarnation is vital to the gospel,

  235. But it's not the whole gospel.

  236. The whole gospel

  237. Is He was brought,

  238. He became a man,

  239. Suffered, died, raised.

  240. It's all about Jesus.

  241. This good news,

  242. The angel declares,

  243. Verse 10,

  244. Shows up in the person of Jesus,

  245. Verse 11,

  246. Who He is,

  247. And what He's done.

  248. It's December 31st.

  249. And I'm not sure if you're the New Year's resolution type,

  250. But I've got a New Year's resolution for you to consider.

  251. If the gospel message is all about Jesus,

  252. Who He is,

  253. And what He's done,

  254. Can I just call you to make Jesus,

  255. Who He is,

  256. And what He's done,

  257. Your first priority in 2018.

  258. That He becomes your first love.

  259. That He becomes your all-consuming love.

  260. That He becomes the one to whom you live for.

  261. This is the gospel message.

  262. This is the good news.

  263. We talked about good news.

  264. Let's talk about the great joy.

  265. This angel comes in Luke 2.10.

  266. He says,

  267. I bring you good news of great joy.

  268. What kind of joy are we talking about?

  269. Well, that great joy with which He looks talking about,

  270. Shows up in a different way in verse 47 of Luke 24.

  271. And that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed.

  272. The great joy that this angel speaks of,

  273. Of this child,

  274. Is the great joy of forgiveness of sins that He's going to bring.

  275. Let me ask you a question.

  276. Who would be more joyful?

  277. A man who makes $45,000 a year and is forgiven of a $10 debt?

  278. Or another man who makes $45,000 a year who's forgiven of a $300,000 debt?

  279. Who would be more joyful?

  280. The guy forgiven of a $300,000 debt.

  281. Who would be more joyful?

  282. A 30-year-old woman pardoned of a misdemeanor with a small fine?

  283. Or a 30-year-old woman pardoned of a felony with a 15-year prison sentence?

  284. Who would be more joyful?

  285. The 30-year-old woman who was pardoned of a felony with a 15-year prison sentence?

  286. Let me let you into something.

  287. Our tendency as human beings is to minimize the offense of our sin against God.

  288. We tend to think of our sins against a holy God as misdemeanors which God is glad to look beyond.

  289. And so it shows up like this.

  290. A guy doesn't like another guy.

  291. And he says something like, well, I'm not killing anybody.

  292. I just don't like the guy.

  293. Or it shows up like this.

  294. Man, it's not like I'm cheating on my wife, but man, I'd like to lay eyes on her a little bit more.

  295. Hey, it's not like I'm lying under oath for something really important.

  296. It's just a little white lie.

  297. Why?

  298. We tend to minimize our wrongs.

  299. Let me ask you this.

  300. What happens if those little misdemeanors were actually more grievous in God's sight than you realized?

  301. So what happens if the hate that God sees in your heart towards this other guy that you're not planning on murdering,

  302. but he sees it as the seed of murder for what it is, and it's grievous to him?

  303. What happens if God sees the lust in your heart because that lust in your heart is adultery of your heart,

  304. and God is offended by that?

  305. He's the most faithful of all.

  306. And what if God sees the dishonesty with your little white lie,

  307. and he's repelled by it because he's the God of truth?

  308. He never lies.

  309. The typical way sinners measure their offense

  310. is by comparing their sin to the sin of other sinners.

  311. I'm not that bad.

  312. Look at him.

  313. But the humble of heart measure the offense of their sin against a holy God

  314. and his holy will revealed in the scriptures.

  315. So when you start to see your sin the way that God sees your sin,

  316. or you start to feel about your sin the way that God feels about your sin,

  317. do you know what's going to happen?

  318. You're going to realize your great need for a great Savior.

  319. And that is a work of the Holy Spirit.

  320. We learn from John 16 that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity,

  321. convicts sinners of their sin against God.

  322. The Holy Spirit shows us that our sinfulness goes beyond our own sense of self-disappointment

  323. and our own sense of disappointing others

  324. to helping us see that our sin is an offense against God.

  325. Do you know what happens when great sin is forgiven?

  326. Do you know what happens?

  327. When you realize the greatness of your sin against a holy God

  328. and you realize what Jesus has done for you, gospel,

  329. what you then experience is great joy.

  330. I've been forgiven much.

  331. Do you remember that prostitute who entered the house of Simon the Pharisee in Luke?

  332. Jesus is sitting at table with this well-known Pharisee

  333. and this prostitute walks in and she just starts weeping over Jesus

  334. and she starts using her hair to clean his feet.

  335. Jesus speaks a parable and the parable says,

  336. He who's been forgiven little loves little,

  337. but this woman who's been forgiven much, she loves much.

  338. She knows what she's been forgiven of.

  339. My friends, this morning,

  340. do you know what you've been forgiven of?

  341. In order for you to experience the great joy of salvation in Jesus,

  342. you first have got to experience the godly grief over your sin.

  343. The great joy with which the angel speaks in Luke 2

  344. is the great joy that springs from being forgiven by a great Savior.

  345. It's all about a great salvation.

  346. Remember the song,

  347. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe.

  348. You can't sing that without joy.

  349. Joy of being saved.

  350. Joy of being rescued.

  351. Is it personal?

  352. Is it personal?

  353. Do you realize what you've been rescued from?

  354. One of the things as we go into 2018

  355. is if you're here right now and you're like,

  356. you know what?

  357. I'm not sure if I fully get what Jesus has rescued me from.

  358. I'm not sure if I fully understand

  359. the grievous nature of my sin.

  360. Can I encourage you to take this step?

  361. Ask God to show you the depth of your sin.

  362. God, would you help me to see how sinful I am?

  363. And what will happen is He'll show you

  364. and then what you'll see is the glory of Christ all the more

  365. and your joy will be deepened as a result.

  366. What also will happen is this.

  367. If you have a growing sense of your own sinfulness

  368. in need of Christ

  369. and the great joy that comes from believing in Him,

  370. you're going to start looking at other people differently.

  371. You're going to start wondering,

  372. man, do they have the joy?

  373. Do they know what Christ has done for them?

  374. To be on mission for Jesus

  375. is to recognize,

  376. I am a great sinner who's been forgiven much

  377. by a great Savior.

  378. Let's look at the grand task.

  379. We've looked at the good news,

  380. the message about Jesus.

  381. We've looked at the great joy

  382. that springs from realizing

  383. this Christ has substituted Himself

  384. for my great sin

  385. and now I'm forgiven

  386. and now let's look at the grand task.

  387. In Luke 2.10,

  388. the angel says that this good news of great joy

  389. is for all the people.

  390. And the shepherds who are listening

  391. would have thought about it this way.

  392. It's good for all the Jewish people.

  393. These shepherds,

  394. as I mentioned before,

  395. according to kind of Jewish cultural norms,

  396. the Jewish social standing,

  397. shepherds where they kind of click up

  398. on the social strata from lepers.

  399. So this angel saying,

  400. hey, I bring you good news of great joy

  401. for all the people,

  402. even you low guys.

  403. This is good news.

  404. But they're probably thinking

  405. he's still within the Jewish society.

  406. If you flip back to Luke 24, verse 47,

    Luke 24:47

  407. Jesus expands it.

  408. He's talking about, in verse 46,

  409. the Jewish Christ who would suffer

  410. and on the third day rise

  411. after being crucified.

  412. And then in verse 47,

  413. we read,

  414. and that repentance and forgiveness of sins

  415. should be proclaimed in his name,

  416. the name of Jesus,

  417. to all nations.

  418. Not just Jews,

  419. but to all non-Jews.

  420. Jesus expands the scope of the mission.

  421. So the gospel message is a gospel message

  422. about a Jewish Christ

  423. who's God in the flesh,

  424. who suffered, crucified,

  425. and was raised.

  426. And anyone who responds in repentance and faith

  427. has a great joy in that.

  428. And you don't have to be a Jew to believe it.

  429. Everyone needs to hear the message about Christ

  430. because everybody's a sinner.

  431. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  432. What Luke is getting at,

  433. at the end of Luke,

  434. here in Luke 24,

  435. this is the great commission.

  436. This is the call to the disciples of Jesus

  437. to go and proclaim.

  438. And what I want to bring you to is this,

  439. is that the risen incarnate Christ,

  440. who is the focus of this message,

  441. is presently reigning on high,

  442. advancing his kingdom around the world

  443. through the proclamation of the gospel.

  444. There are people worshiping Jesus

  445. all around the world right now

  446. because they've experienced the great joy

  447. of his substitutionary death on their behalf.

  448. The risen Christ,

  449. we've learned this morning from Simon,

  450. he's at work in Nepal.

  451. He's at work in Brazil.

  452. I talked to a man two weeks ago.

  453. God is at work in Brazil,

  454. China, North Korea, Kenya,

  455. Cuba, Iran, Israel, Russia,

  456. the United States of America.

  457. Here's another way to think about it.

  458. God is spreading gospel joy

  459. to sinners around the globe.

  460. And Kenosha, this city of 100,000,

  461. this is our little slice of the world.

  462. And so as a church,

  463. we're committed to partnering with people

  464. like The Rise around the world

  465. to make known Jesus to their people groups.

  466. But we're not going to leapfrog the mission field

  467. that God has called us to

  468. in order to be supporting foreign missions.

  469. God has called us to a unique work

  470. of mission here in the city of Kenosha.

  471. Have you heard the expression,

  472. think globally, act locally?

  473. That's the call of Christ on our church.

  474. We're going to be thinking globally.

  475. And where God provides opportunities

  476. to partner with other people,

  477. we'll consider it and take what is most wise.

  478. But we're going to act locally.

  479. That's going to be our priority.

  480. A priority of advancing Christ's mission locally.

  481. Secondly, there are people in this city

  482. who will respond in repentance and faith

  483. with great joy upon hearing the good news of Christ.

  484. Right now we're taking steps to that

  485. in a variety of ways.

  486. But God has recently brought an evangelist to our church.

  487. We're praying for more.

  488. And there is a growing burden among people in our church

  489. to open up their homes

  490. to people who don't presently believe yet

  491. to hear the gospel.

  492. This morning I want to give you a very practical way

  493. to start thinking globally but acting locally.

  494. I'd like you to write this on your notes.

  495. Write down three words.

  496. Neighborhood mission map.

  497. Neighborhood mission map.

  498. Here's what this is.

  499. Think about where you live.

  500. Maybe you live in an apartment

  501. or maybe you live in a house on a block.

  502. You're looking down upon your apartment or block

  503. and what you're going to write on your neighborhood mission map

  504. is a scale with like little rectangles

  505. of all the houses within five doors of you.

  506. Apartments within five doors of you.

  507. Write them down.

  508. And then here's the first step

  509. of putting together a neighborhood mission map.

  510. Write down all the names of your neighbors.

  511. Just write them down.

  512. And when you do that,

  513. your experience will be my experience

  514. when I did this a month ago.

  515. I know maybe half of them by name.

  516. You know what that means?

  517. I've got a lot of nameless neighbors.

  518. And you know what makes it really easy to do?

  519. Just drive on right by.

  520. I don't know them.

  521. So the purpose of a neighborhood mission map

  522. is to start to get to know your neighbors.

  523. And when you get to know their names,

  524. you're going to start seeing image bearers living around you.

  525. Image bearers that are under the consequence of sin

  526. and need to hear the gospel.

  527. It's one thing to make a neighborhood mission map

  528. of your neighborhood

  529. and to see the nameless neighbors.

  530. It's another thing to make time and effort

  531. to go meet your nameless neighbors.

  532. To compel you to cross the street on a January

  533. when it's 20 degrees

  534. and knock on your neighbor's door

  535. to get to know their names.

  536. What's going to compel you to do that?

  537. What's going to prompt you to do such a thing?

  538. Well, our risen and reigning Savior

  539. has given us the Holy Spirit

  540. to empower our ministry.

  541. To compel us to cross the street.

  542. When we think globally and act locally

  543. on this huge call,

  544. this huge mission we're on,

  545. it's really important to realize too

  546. that God has made a promise.

  547. So this fourth point, God's promise,

  548. the power of the mission.

  549. And here I'd like you to look at Luke 24, 48 and 49.

  550. Jesus is speaking to his disciples

  551. and he says,

  552. you are witnesses of these things,

  553. my suffering, crucifixion, resurrection.

  554. And behold, I'm sending the promise

  555. of my Father upon you,

  556. but stay in the city

  557. until you are clothed with power

  558. from on high.

  559. When Jesus says in verse 49,

  560. I'm sending the promise of my Father upon you,

  561. he's not speaking of a what,

  562. he's speaking of a who.

  563. The promised Holy Spirit.

  564. The third person of the Trinity.

  565. And the Holy Spirit, Jesus says,

  566. will clothe his disciples

  567. with power from on high

  568. to be his witnesses

  569. to Jerusalem and beyond.

  570. to give them the courage

  571. and the boldness

  572. to proclaim the Jewish Christ

  573. incarnate, suffered,

  574. crucified, and raised,

  575. and now offers to all forgiveness.

  576. One of the things Jesus knows

  577. about us

  578. is that

  579. we need power

  580. for the mission

  581. he's called us to.

  582. And he's provided it

  583. in the Holy Spirit.

  584. Luke, who wrote the Gospel of Luke,

  585. also wrote Acts.

  586. And in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  587. Luke picks up

  588. where his Gospel leaves off.

  589. The risen Christ

  590. is in the upper room

  591. in Jerusalem

  592. with the disciples.

  593. And Jesus tells his disciples

  594. that they're going to receive power

  595. when the Holy Spirit

  596. comes upon them

  597. to be his witnesses.

  598. Chapter 1, verse 8.

  599. And then these disciple witnesses

  600. empowered by the Holy Spirit,

  601. they're going to proclaim

  602. the Gospel

  603. to sinners

  604. in Jerusalem

  605. and Judea

  606. and to Samaria

  607. and to the end

  608. of the world

  609. to the nations.

  610. They need Holy Spirit power

  611. to do that.

  612. They need Holy Spirit power

  613. to be faithful

  614. to the mission

  615. Jesus has entrusted

  616. to them.

  617. And we need

  618. the Holy Spirit power

  619. to do the same.

  620. in Acts 2,

  621. Luke records

  622. what happens

  623. at Pentecost

  624. when the Holy Spirit

  625. comes down

  626. upon Christ's disciples

  627. and empowers them

  628. to be his witnesses.

  629. It was the fulfillment

  630. of Joel chapter 2.

    Joel 2 chapter mention

  631. And what happens

  632. throughout the book of Acts

  633. is this,

  634. the person of the Holy Spirit

  635. empowering ordinary Christians

  636. like you and me,

  637. empowering ordinary Christians

  638. to boldly proclaim

  639. the Gospel of Christ

  640. to those living

  641. right around them.

  642. And the response varies.

  643. Some receive the glad tidings

  644. of the Gospel

  645. and they in great joy

  646. respond in repentance

  647. and faith

  648. while others resist

  649. and even persecute

  650. the very ones

  651. who are bringing them

  652. the Gospel.

  653. The book of Acts

  654. shows us

  655. that God's people

  656. empowered by the Holy Spirit

  657. bring the Gospel of Jesus

  658. to the nations.

  659. Here's my question for you.

  660. Do you think

  661. that the same Holy Spirit

  662. who empowered the early church

  663. for bold witness

  664. a church

  665. that crossed

  666. cultural boundaries

  667. time and again

  668. a church

  669. that suffered

  670. great hardship

  671. and resistance

  672. but faithfully pressed on

  673. do you think

  674. the same Holy Spirit

  675. who empowered

  676. the early church

  677. do you think

  678. He's able

  679. to empower you

  680. to cross your street

  681. and knock on your neighbor's door

  682. to hear their name?

  683. He is.

  684. He's more than able

  685. to do that.

  686. He is able

  687. to give you

  688. the courage

  689. to step out

  690. in faith

  691. and to meet

  692. your neighbors.

  693. I think the question

  694. starts to become

  695. right now

  696. a question like this

  697. well how

  698. how do I access

  699. that?

  700. How am I empowered

  701. by the Holy Spirit

  702. to take a step

  703. like that?

  704. Well let me just

  705. help you understand

  706. first off

  707. the Holy Spirit

  708. the moment

  709. you believed

  710. He indwelt you

  711. He lives in you

  712. He took up

  713. residence in you

  714. the moment

  715. you believed

  716. and He was

  717. the Holy Spirit

  718. who applied

  719. the shed blood

  720. of Jesus

  721. to all of your sin

  722. so that you were

  723. a new creation

  724. in Christ Jesus

  725. that's a work

  726. of the Holy Spirit

  727. in you

  728. the Holy Spirit

  729. is seeking to

  730. spotlight

  731. Jesus

  732. in your character

  733. and He's looking

  734. to spotlight

  735. Jesus

  736. through your witness

  737. John 16

  738. 14

  739. and so

  740. the God

  741. who indwells you

  742. can I just try

  743. to convince you

  744. of something here?

  745. Could it be

  746. the Holy Spirit

  747. is actually

  748. eager

  749. to empower you

  750. to witness

  751. that He

  752. wants to

  753. He is

  754. ready

  755. and willing

  756. and available

  757. we just need

  758. to step out

  759. what we see

  760. from the early church

  761. is that when

  762. they encountered

  763. resistance

  764. and they needed

  765. courage

  766. do you know

  767. what they did?

  768. they prayed

  769. and you know

  770. what happened?

  771. God shook

  772. the room

  773. and He

  774. filled them

  775. with His Holy Spirit

  776. and they boldly

  777. proclaimed God's Word

  778. Acts 4 31

  779. so let me call you

  780. to something

  781. in your personal

  782. time of devotion

  783. to God

  784. would you begin

  785. to ask

  786. God

  787. to fill you

  788. with His

  789. Spirit

  790. afresh

  791. He may convict

  792. you of your sins

  793. that's just

  794. going to lead

  795. to great joy

  796. in Jesus

  797. but He

  798. also may

  799. burden you

  800. with your

  801. neighbors

  802. that's

  803. good

  804. when you

  805. gather

  806. with your

  807. life group

  808. ask God

  809. to pour

  810. out His

  811. Spirit

  812. upon you

  813. with the

  814. other members

  815. of your

  816. life group

  817. praying

  818. and thinking

  819. of other

  820. people

  821. other people

  822. around you

  823. who need

  824. Jesus

  825. Jesus

  826. the Holy Spirit

  827. is the power

  828. of the mission

  829. that Christ

  830. has called us

  831. to

  832. this Christmas

  833. season may be

  834. gone

  835. your Christmas tree

  836. might be lying

  837. horizontal in some

  838. Christmas tree

  839. graveyard

  840. your plastic

  841. Jesus may be

  842. back in your

  843. attic

  844. but the risen

  845. reigning

  846. incarnate

  847. Christ

  848. is advancing

  849. His

  850. kingdom

  851. around

  852. the globe

  853. He's

  854. spreading

  855. the joy

  856. of salvation

  857. through the

  858. proclamation

  859. of the good

  860. news

  861. and the

  862. promised

  863. Holy Spirit

  864. who is

  865. active

  866. today

  867. is

  868. empowering

  869. God's

  870. people

  871. for the

  872. task

  873. and He's

  874. eager to

  875. empower

  876. you

  877. to proclaim

  878. Christ

  879. to our

  880. little slice

  881. of the world

  882. here in

  883. Kenosha

  884. what would

  885. happen

  886. if in

  887. 2018

  888. these pews

  889. start filling

  890. up more and

  891. more with

  892. people who

  893. have been

  894. rescued from

  895. their sin

  896. and they are

  897. singing to

  898. the risen

  899. Christ out

  900. of hearts

  901. full of

  902. joy

  903. our Christ

  904. is on a

  905. mission

  906. and He's

  907. called each

  908. of us

  909. to be on

  910. mission

  911. with Him

  912. let's

  913. pray

  914. God

  915. thank you

  916. for

  917. bringing

  918. the good

  919. news

  920. to our

  921. ear

  922. thank you

  923. God

  924. for the

  925. great

  926. joy

  927. many

  928. of us

  929. experience

  930. because we

  931. know you've

  932. delivered us

  933. from great

  934. sin

  935. God

  936. thank you

  937. for entrusting

  938. us

  939. with this

  940. grand

  941. task

  942. to bring

  943. the gospel

  944. to the

  945. nations

  946. and we

  947. want to

  948. think

  949. globally

  950. but act

  951. locally

  952. so God

  953. would you

  954. help us

  955. with that

  956. would you

  957. help us

  958. to start

  959. getting to

  960. know our

  961. nameless

  962. neighbors

  963. and God

  964. we would

  965. come to you

  966. now

  967. and we

  968. would ask

  969. that you

  970. would pour

  971. out your

  972. spirit

  973. afresh upon

  974. us your

  975. people

  976. and that you

  977. would shake

  978. our building

  979. and that you

  980. would empower

  981. us to proclaim

  982. the word

  983. to great

  984. effect

  985. for the joy

  986. of all

  987. people

  988. and the

  989. glory of

  990. your name

  991. amen

  992. thank you
