  1. kind of riffing off of something that Rick mentioned about New Year's resolutions.

  2. I know not everybody makes New Year's resolutions in our house.

  3. We call them turning over new leaves.

  4. And I am regularly mocked in my house for the amount of new leaves that I tend to turn over during the year.

  5. And they usually have to do with eating, exercising, other things of that nature.

  6. This morning, this first Sunday of 2018, I don't know if you've made New Year's resolutions.

  7. I don't know if you've turned over new leaves.

  8. But I want to call you to make a resolution.

  9. It's not to get physically fit.

  10. It's not to get financially healthy.

  11. It's not to get vocationally positioned to grow in your time management or get right with other people.

  12. Those are all good things.

  13. But what I want to call you to do this morning is the thing of most importance.

  14. It's what God in His Word says this is of first importance.

  15. And I want to call you to make a resolution in light of that.

  16. And to line your life up with it.

  17. This past December, we took a break from the Gospel of Matthew.

  18. And we spent the bulk of our Sunday mornings preaching on the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

  19. God became a man and dwelt among us.

  20. And this morning, we get back into the study of the Gospel of Matthew.

  21. And we get back in in Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  22. And what you need to know about Matthew 26 is,

  23. it's the beginning of the passion of the Christ.

  24. And when we talk about the passion of the King, the passion of Jesus,

  25. we're talking about His suffering and His death that eventually leads to His resurrection.

  26. What you need to know about the passion of Jesus Christ is that it's at the heart of the Gospel.

  27. The heart of the Gospel is Jesus Christ making a sacrificial death on behalf of sinners.

  28. Another way to talk about it is,

  29. if Christ had not been crucified,

  30. there would be no good news of salvation for anybody.

  31. Everything rides on it.

  32. And so this morning, I want to call you to make a life resolution.

  33. Not just a year resolution,

  34. but for the rest of your lives.

  35. We never outgrow the need to be reminded of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  36. We never outgrow the need to be reminded of what He did for us.

  37. So it's good and right to start this new year focusing our Sunday mornings on the passion of the King.

  38. His suffering and His death,

  39. and eventually His resurrection.

  40. And this morning, what I want you to see is that the sacrifice Jesus makes

  41. is the greatest sacrifice,

  42. resulting in the greatest deliverance for the greatest number of people.

  43. And we're going to be looking specifically at a moment

  44. where He's prepared for burial.

  45. We're going to see an unnamed woman

  46. lining up her life with the redemptive purposes of her King.

  47. And though unnamed,

  48. she is memorialized forever.

  49. So this morning, I want to walk us through Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  50. We're going to walk through 19 verses.

  51. Verse 1 through 19, there are five sections in this passage.

  52. I'm going to walk you through each passage,

  53. and I'm going to show you how they relate to one another.

  54. And after we do that, I'm going to say,

  55. here's what it's all saying,

  56. and then we're going to apply it to our lives.

  57. So let's walk through this account.

  58. It starts in Matthew 26, verses 1 through 1 and 2,

    Matthew 26:1

  59. in Jesus' final passion prediction.

  60. Listen to what Matthew writes.

  61. When Jesus had finished all these things,

  62. He said to His disciples,

  63. You know that after two days the Passover is coming,

  64. and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.

  65. When Matthew writes,

  66. when Jesus had finished all these things,

  67. He's referring to immediately what He's just got done talking about,

  68. the Olivet Discourse,

  69. Matthew 24 and 25,

  70. when Jesus is talking about the end times,

  71. final judgment.

  72. But He's talking about also all of Jesus' public ministry.

  73. It has come to an end.

  74. From here on out,

  75. when Jesus speaks,

  76. it's going to be more in a private context.

  77. But this is the fourth and final passion prediction that Jesus makes.

  78. Predictions of His suffering and of His death.

  79. And I just, in order to get you ready,

  80. I want you to bring you back to the first passion prediction.

  81. It's in Matthew chapter 16.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  82. Peter has just confessed Jesus as the Christ,

  83. and then Matthew goes on and tells us what Jesus does in light of that.

  84. In verse 21,

  85. from that time,

  86. Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem

  87. and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes,

  88. and be killed,

  89. and on the third day,

  90. be raised.

  91. So back in Matthew 16,

  92. Jesus starts telling His disciples,

  93. I'm going to Jerusalem.

  94. I'm going to suffer, die, and be raised.

  95. If you flip over to Matthew chapter 17,

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  96. we have the second passion prediction.

  97. It's in verses 22 and 23.

  98. And they were gathering in Galilee.

  99. They're still up north.

  100. Jesus said to them,

  101. The Son of Man.

  102. That's Jesus' favorite title of Himself.

  103. It's messianic.

  104. It's Christological.

  105. It refers back to Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  106. when God gives this Son of Man the kingdom forever.

  107. As they were gathering in Galilee,

  108. Jesus said to them,

  109. The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men,

  110. and they will kill Him,

  111. and He will be raised on the third day.

  112. And they were greatly distressed.

  113. If you flip over to Matthew chapter 20,

    Matthew 20:17

  114. verses 17 and 19,

  115. we have the third passion prediction.

  116. And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem,

  117. He took the 12 disciples aside,

  118. and on the way,

  119. He said to them,

  120. See,

  121. we are going up to Jerusalem,

  122. and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes.

  123. He's going to be betrayed.

  124. And they will condemn Him to death,

  125. and deliver Him over to the Gentiles,

  126. to be mocked, and flogged, and crucified.

  127. This is the first time Jesus tells what kind of death He's going to die,

  128. by Roman crucifixion.

  129. And He will be raised on the third day.

  130. And then that leads us to Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:2

  131. verse 2,

  132. where here Jesus is saying,

  133. for the fourth and final time,

  134. You know that after two days,

  135. the Passover is coming,

  136. and the Son of Man will be delivered up,

  137. to be crucified.

  138. There's something unique about this passion prediction.

  139. Did you notice the word Passover?

  140. You know after two days,

  141. the Passover is coming.

  142. Here's what Jesus is doing.

  143. He is making a connection between His death,

  144. and the Passover.

  145. He wants you to know that.

  146. God wants you to think about Christ's death,

  147. a certain way.

  148. It's going to be a Roman crucifixion,

  149. on the Jewish Passover.

  150. That will be how He dies.

  151. The Son of Man,

  152. the Christ,

  153. will die by crucifixion.

  154. Now,

  155. I don't want to assume you know what Passover is.

  156. So let me just give you a little crash course in it.

  157. Now,

  158. Passover was one of three annual feasts

  159. Jews would make a journey to go to Jerusalem to observe.

  160. And Passover was a feast that spanned over eight days.

  161. It started with Passover

  162. and included the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

  163. And one scholar estimates

  164. that Jerusalem's normal population

  165. would have been about 30,000 people

  166. at kind of normal city life.

  167. But when Passover came,

  168. the city would swell to 180,000 people.

  169. So six times the normal amount of people there.

  170. Jews had to observe Passover in Jerusalem

  171. because the temple was there.

  172. And the temple was there.

  173. And what would happen there

  174. was they would sacrifice

  175. these male, unblemished lambs at the altar.

  176. Blood was shed.

  177. Now,

  178. I don't know how your mind works,

  179. but when I think about 180,000 people

  180. in a city that's normally 30,000

  181. celebrating or observing

  182. a ritual like Passover,

  183. I start asking,

  184. well, how many lambs are involved?

  185. How many?

  186. And so like,

  187. if we just kind of include like

  188. 10 people to a family unit

  189. and we divide that by 180,

  190. I mean, we're talking 18,000 lambs per family.

  191. Not per family, but all together.

  192. Even if you just slice that in half,

  193. 9,000 lambs,

  194. that's a lot of lambs in the city.

  195. And that's a lot of blood.

  196. Passover was a feast memorializing God's deliverance

  197. of his people from captivity to Egypt.

  198. And we see that in Exodus chapter 12.

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  199. Remember Moses saying to Pharaoh,

  200. let my people go.

  201. Israel had been enslaved by Egypt.

  202. And God heard their prayers.

  203. He raised up Moses and says,

  204. Moses, you go tell Pharaoh to let my people go.

  205. And so Moses goes.

  206. And Pharaoh wouldn't listen.

  207. So God starts bringing plagues

  208. after plagues after plagues.

  209. And every time,

  210. Moses is saying,

  211. let my people go.

  212. And Pharaoh would resist.

  213. The plagues would get worse.

  214. And eventually,

  215. the plagues climax

  216. in the tenth and final plague

  217. in which God vows to send

  218. the angel of death,

  219. the destroyer,

  220. to take the life

  221. of every firstborn male in Egypt.

  222. And at that time,

  223. God makes this incredible provision

  224. for his people.

  225. He instructs his people

  226. to kill a male lamb

  227. because the firstborn males

  228. would be struck by the destroyer.

  229. He instructs his people

  230. to take a male,

  231. unblemished lamb

  232. and kill it at twilight

  233. on the night the destroyer comes.

  234. And what they did

  235. with the blood of that lamb

  236. was they took the blood of that lamb

  237. and they spread it over

  238. the doorposts of their homes.

  239. And so when the angel of the Lord

  240. approached that house

  241. and he saw the blood of the lamb,

  242. he passed over the people

  243. under the blood.

  244. The blood of the sacrificed lamb

  245. signaled the angel of death

  246. that those in that house

  247. were covered and protected

  248. by the blood of the lamb.

  249. The lamb was slain

  250. to deliver the people

  251. under the blood.

  252. And so the blood

  253. of the Passover lamb

  254. rescued God's people

  255. from sheer death

  256. that led to their deliverance

  257. from captivity to Egypt

  258. and bring them out.

  259. And this is the deliverance

  260. that defined Israel

  261. as God's people.

  262. So God commanded

  263. this Passover feast

  264. to be observed

  265. every year

  266. for his people

  267. to participate

  268. in forever.

  269. Passover has to do

  270. with death.

  271. It's got to do

  272. with blood.

  273. It's got to do

  274. with passing

  275. over protection.

  276. And Jesus

  277. drops it

  278. here in Matthew

    Matthew 26:2

  279. chapter 26

  280. verse 2.

  281. It's two days

  282. from Passover.

  283. He's connecting

  284. the Passover

  285. with his death.

  286. Do you understand

  287. the claim

  288. that Jesus

  289. is starting to make?

  290. Jesus is starting

  291. to make this claim

  292. that his death

  293. is the ultimate

  294. Passover sacrifice.

  295. It's a huge claim.

  296. Jesus at this moment

  297. is fully aware

  298. that God has purposed

  299. that he,

  300. the Christ,

  301. the Son of Man

  302. is to be the ultimate

  303. once for all

  304. Passover sacrifice

  305. for all sinners

  306. everywhere

  307. willing to

  308. acknowledge him.

  309. So what you have

  310. going on here

  311. 33 AD in Jerusalem

  312. is a seismic

  313. shift in God's

  314. plan of salvation.

  315. Jesus is making

  316. a claim on the

  317. Passover.

  318. So that's

  319. the first section

  320. of this passage.

  321. Let's go to the

  322. second.

  323. Verses 3 through 5.

  324. Caiaphas house.

  325. Then the chief

  326. priests and the

  327. elders of the people

  328. gathered in the

  329. palace of the

  330. high priest

  331. whose name was

  332. Caiaphas

  333. and plotted together

  334. in order to arrest

  335. Jesus by stealth

  336. and kill him.

  337. But they said

  338. not during the feast

  339. lest there be an

  340. uproar among the

  341. people.

  342. We move from

  343. Jesus' final

  344. passion prediction

  345. in which he's

  346. making a claim

  347. on being the

  348. Passover sacrifice

  349. to Caiaphas house

  350. where the chief

  351. priests and

  352. elders are plotting

  353. the death of

  354. Jesus.

  355. These men are

  356. not only aware

  357. of Jesus but

  358. they're seeing him

  359. as a threat.

  360. It's not good for

  361. their political

  362. position and power.

  363. So they start

  364. plotting to arrest

  365. and kill him.

  366. And what Matthew

  367. lays out for us

  368. is very interesting.

  369. We've got one

  370. plan laid out

  371. the plan of the

  372. Christ that his

  373. death is going to

  374. take place on the

  375. Passover and now

  376. we have another set

  377. of plans by the

  378. leaders of the

  379. people and their

  380. plan seems to be

  381. saying let's not

  382. kill him during

  383. the feast.

  384. Here's what I want

  385. you to notice.

  386. Notice where

  387. they're meeting.

  388. They're meeting

  389. in Caiaphas

  390. house.

  391. a palace.

  392. In verse 3.

  393. Here's what I also

  394. want you to notice.

  395. That Caiaphas

  396. is named.

  397. It's not just

  398. some guy.

  399. It's Caiaphas.

  400. He was a

  401. unique high

  402. priest in Israel

  403. at this time.

  404. He was able to

  405. hold on to power

  406. for about 16 years

  407. which was quite

  408. the political

  409. accomplishment of

  410. that time.

  411. He was politically

  412. savvy.

  413. So they're meeting

  414. in a palace in

  415. Jerusalem.

  416. Caiaphas house.

  417. Prestigious.

  418. It would have been a

  419. nice place.

  420. And notice the

  421. plans.

  422. Verse 5.

  423. They're secretly

  424. trying to arrest,

  425. seeking how to

  426. arrest and kill

  427. Jesus.

  428. But again,

  429. not during the

  430. feast.

  431. I mean 180,000

  432. people.

  433. Surely some of

  434. them are

  435. Galileans.

  436. Jesus has a

  437. following.

  438. If we try to

  439. arrest him,

  440. it's a political

  441. tinderbox.

  442. We could have a

  443. riot on our

  444. hands.

  445. So they're going

  446. to wait him

  447. out.

  448. But they're

  449. looking for an

  450. opportunity.

  451. In this section,

  452. what I want you

  453. to see is that

  454. we have important

  455. people in high

  456. positions plotting

  457. the death of

  458. Jesus in a

  459. really nice

  460. place.

  461. A palace.

  462. And their

  463. plans seem to

  464. be at odds

  465. with the plans

  466. of the Christ.

  467. Christ.

  468. Now we move

  469. on to the

  470. third section.

  471. Verses 6

  472. through 13.

  473. The pouring

  474. of oil on

  475. Jesus by an

  476. unnamed woman.

  477. Let me read

  478. that for you.

  479. Now when Jesus

  480. was at Bethany

  481. in the house

  482. of Simon the

  483. leper, a woman

  484. came up to him

  485. with an alabaster

  486. flask, a very

  487. expensive ointment,

  488. and she poured

  489. it on his head

  490. as he reclined

  491. at table.

  492. And when the

  493. disciples saw it,

  494. they were indignant

  495. saying, why this

  496. waste?

  497. For this could

  498. have been sold

  499. for a

  500. large sum

  501. and given

  502. to the poor.

  503. But Jesus,

  504. aware of this,

  505. said to them,

  506. why do you

  507. trouble the

  508. woman?

  509. For she has

  510. done a

  511. beautiful thing

  512. to me.

  513. For you

  514. always have

  515. the poor

  516. with you,

  517. but you

  518. will not

  519. always have

  520. me.

  521. In pouring

  522. this ointment

  523. on my body,

  524. she has done

  525. it to prepare

  526. me for burial.

  527. Truly I

  528. say to you,

  529. wherever the

  530. gospel is

  531. proclaimed in

  532. the whole

  533. world, what

  534. she has done

  535. will also be

  536. told in

  537. memory of

  538. her.

  539. So here's

  540. the shift

  541. that takes

  542. place.

  543. We've just

  544. been in

  545. Caiaphas'

  546. palace.

  547. He's named.

  548. A plot's

  549. unfolding.

  550. And then

  551. Matthew brings

  552. us from the

  553. palace of

  554. Caiaphas to

  555. the house of

  556. Simon the

  557. leper.

  558. From

  559. palace to

  560. a leper's

  561. house?

  562. In

  563. Bethany?

  564. We go

  565. from the

  566. capital to

  567. some potent

  568. place on

  569. the outskirts.

  570. It's quite a

  571. contrast.

  572. We're not

  573. given the

  574. back story on

  575. Simon the

  576. leper.

  577. I'd love to

  578. know it,

  579. but in order

  580. for Jesus and

  581. other Jews to

  582. be meeting

  583. there, it

  584. must have been

  585. cleansed.

  586. And so one of

  587. the theories is

  588. Simon the

  589. leper was

  590. healed by

  591. Jesus.

  592. That's how

  593. they could

  594. meet there.

  595. Otherwise, it

  596. would have been

  597. unclean and

  598. unallowed for

  599. any Jew to

  600. meet in.

  601. So the

  602. where is in

  603. contrast to

  604. Caiaphas'

  605. palace.

  606. It's a

  607. questionable

  608. place.

  609. A leper's

  610. house?

  611. In

  612. Bethany?

  613. And now,

  614. the who.

  615. verse 7,

  616. a woman came

  617. up to him

  618. with an

  619. alabaster.

  620. She's

  621. unnamed.

  622. If you look

  623. at the rest

  624. of the

  625. section, she

  626. goes nameless.

  627. Verse 10,

  628. why do you

  629. trouble the

  630. woman?

  631. For she

  632. has done a

  633. beautiful thing.

  634. Verse 12,

  635. on my body,

  636. she has done

  637. it.

  638. Verse 13,

  639. what she has

  640. done will

  641. also be told

  642. in memory.

  643. She's never

  644. named.

  645. Caiaphas gets

  646. named.

  647. This woman

  648. doesn't.

  649. It's an

  650. interesting

  651. contrast.

  652. Matthew is

  653. wanting to

  654. draw our

  655. attention to

  656. something.

  657. Now, we

  658. actually know

  659. who this

  660. is.

  661. John 12

  662. spills the

  663. beans.

  664. This is

  665. Mary, the

  666. sister of

  667. Martha and

  668. Lazarus.

  669. Matthew

  670. intentionally

  671. keeps her

  672. anonymous.

  673. We'll come

  674. back to it

  675. in a second.

  676. But this

  677. Mary would

  678. have been

  679. the Mary

  680. in John

  681. 11 who

  682. witnessed

  683. Jesus raise

  684. her brother,

  685. dead brother,

  686. up from the

  687. grave.

  688. That's who

  689. this is.

  690. This is the

  691. same Mary in

  692. Luke 10 who

  693. is commended

  694. by Jesus

  695. himself for

  696. sitting at

  697. his feet and

  698. listening to

  699. every word that

  700. came off his

  701. lips as her

  702. sister Martha

  703. is crazily,

  704. busily trying to

  705. facilitate stuff.

  706. this is that

  707. Mary.

  708. But Matthew

  709. intentionally keeps

  710. her anonymous in

  711. order to contrast

  712. her with the

  713. big wig Caiaphas

  714. who's been

  715. named.

  716. Caiaphas is

  717. plotting Christ's

  718. death.

  719. This unnamed

  720. woman is not

  721. plotting his

  722. death.

  723. She's preparing

  724. him to give

  725. his life as a

  726. ransom for many.

  727. she's lining up

  728. with the

  729. Christ's

  730. purposes.

  731. And what we

  732. read is she

  733. comes to Jesus

  734. with an alabaster

  735. flask, a very

  736. expensive ointment

  737. and we learn

  738. from Mark that

  739. this is not just

  740. your everyday oil

  741. that during the

  742. day you put on

  743. somebody as just

  744. kind of a token

  745. welcome.

  746. In our time

  747. this would have

  748. been about 35,

  749. 40 grand

  750. of perfume.

  751. That's the value.

  752. It was worth a

  753. year's wage of a

  754. laborer.

  755. 35 to 40 grand

  756. of perfume

  757. this unnamed

  758. woman pours out

  759. on the head

  760. of Jesus

  761. in this

  762. leper's house

  763. outside of

  764. the political

  765. capital.

  766. Quite a

  767. contrast.

  768. when you see

  769. a pouring out

  770. of this sort

  771. in the Bible

  772. it's called

  773. an anointing.

  774. And as you

  775. read your

  776. Old Testament

  777. you see a

  778. pouring out

  779. of oil

  780. on somebody's

  781. head.

  782. Typically

  783. it's the

  784. anointing

  785. of a

  786. king.

  787. It's

  788. associated

  789. with kingship.

  790. In 1

  791. Samuel 16

  792. Samuel

  793. anoints

  794. David

  795. by pouring

  796. oil over

  797. his head.

  798. But the

  799. thing is

  800. we're not

  801. told why.

  802. Matthew

  803. doesn't tell

  804. us why

  805. this unnamed

  806. woman pours

  807. this oil

  808. out on

  809. Jesus'

  810. head.

  811. We don't

  812. learn it

  813. from the

  814. other gospel

  815. writers

  816. either.

  817. But you

  818. know what

  819. it's safe

  820. to say?

  821. It's safe

  822. to say that

  823. this pouring

  824. out of

  825. this 35,

  826. 40 grand

  827. of perfume

  828. oil,

  829. it was a

  830. lavish

  831. demonstration

  832. of this

  833. unnamed

  834. woman's

  835. devotion

  836. to her

  837. king

  838. Jesus.

  839. And it

  840. stands in

  841. sharp

  842. contrast

  843. to the

  844. plotting

  845. Caiaphas.

  846. It also

  847. stands in

  848. contrast

  849. to the

  850. disciples.

  851. In verses

  852. 8 and

  853. 9,

  854. they throw

  855. a hissy

  856. fit.

  857. They're

  858. angry.

  859. They go

  860. pragmatic.

  861. They see

  862. her pouring

  863. out a

  864. year's

  865. wage on

  866. this,

  867. on his

  868. head,

  869. and they're

  870. like,

  871. why the

  872. waste?

  873. What are

  874. you doing?

  875. We could

  876. have used

  877. it for

  878. the poor.

  879. I really

  880. think I

  881. would have

  882. done that.

  883. But Jesus

  884. does something

  885. phenomenal.

  886. This is like

  887. my favorite

  888. part.

  889. Jesus,

  890. Jesus goes

  891. to her

  892. defense.

  893. He goes

  894. to bat

  895. for her.

  896. He says,

  897. this is no

  898. waste.

  899. Verse 10,

  900. for she has

  901. done a

  902. beautiful thing

  903. to me.

  904. Opposed to

  905. Caiaphas and

  906. what we'll

  907. read in a

  908. second about

  909. Judas.

  910. It's a

  911. beautiful thing,

  912. not wasteful.

  913. And then

  914. verse 11,

  915. he says,

  916. for you will

  917. always have

  918. the poor

  919. with you,

  920. but you

  921. will not

  922. always have

  923. me.

  924. Jesus is

  925. recognizing

  926. this unique

  927. moment in

  928. salvation

  929. history.

  930. Jesus is

  931. not dismissing

  932. the help

  933. of the poor.

  934. He advocated

  935. it.

  936. What he

  937. is acknowledging

  938. is a very

  939. appropriate

  940. display of

  941. devotion at

  942. a unique

  943. moment in

  944. salvation

  945. history.

  946. He's the

  947. son of

  948. man.

  949. He's the

  950. Christ,

  951. God incarnate,

  952. and he's

  953. coming up

  954. on his

  955. Passover

  956. sacrifice,

  957. and this

  958. woman does

  959. a really

  960. beautiful thing

  961. to him.

  962. In

  963. verse 12,

  964. Jesus declares

  965. that what

  966. she's done

  967. is a beautiful

  968. thing.

  969. it's

  970. preparing

  971. him for

  972. burial.

  973. Here's what

  974. you need

  975. to know

  976. about this.

  977. Jesus

  978. knows he's

  979. going to

  980. die on

  981. a Roman

  982. cross,

  983. and what

  984. you need

  985. to know

  986. about

  987. crucifixion

  988. is when

  989. you get

  990. crucified,

  991. you forego

  992. all burial

  993. rites,

  994. okay?

  995. Here's what

  996. would typically

  997. happen.

  998. You get

  999. crucified,

  1000. and either

  1001. the body

  1002. rots and

  1003. disintegrates

  1004. on the

  1005. cross,

  1006. or it

  1007. gets cut

  1008. down,

  1009. falls down,

  1010. and scavenged

  1011. by animals.

  1012. There's no

  1013. burial proceedings.

  1014. It was a

  1015. display of

  1016. power by

  1017. Rome.

  1018. Jesus knows

  1019. this.

  1020. And so,

  1021. this act

  1022. of devotion,

  1023. and we're not

  1024. clear if this

  1025. woman knew

  1026. that she was

  1027. anointing his

  1028. body for burial,

  1029. we're not told.

  1030. But what Jesus

  1031. says is,

  1032. oh,

  1033. this is what

  1034. you have

  1035. done.

  1036. You've

  1037. anointed my

  1038. body for

  1039. burial.

  1040. You've

  1041. shown me

  1042. a kindness

  1043. that all

  1044. other crucified

  1045. bodies typically

  1046. don't receive.

  1047. A

  1048. perfumed

  1049. body.

  1050. What we see

  1051. here is that

  1052. Jesus is

  1053. thinking about

  1054. his crucifixion.

  1055. And in

  1056. verse 13,

  1057. he says,

  1058. truly,

  1059. I say to

  1060. you,

  1061. wherever this

  1062. gospel is

  1063. proclaimed in

  1064. the whole

  1065. world,

  1066. what she has

  1067. done will

  1068. also be told

  1069. in memory of

  1070. her.

  1071. She is

  1072. commended for

  1073. her service

  1074. in his

  1075. great redemptive

  1076. act for the

  1077. world.

  1078. Did you notice

  1079. the words,

  1080. this gospel?

  1081. Look at

  1082. verse 13.

  1083. I say to

  1084. you,

  1085. wherever this

  1086. gospel is

  1087. proclaimed in

  1088. the whole

  1089. world,

  1090. Jesus

  1091. already knows

  1092. that his

  1093. coming death

  1094. is going to

  1095. be good

  1096. news for

  1097. the world.

  1098. And what

  1099. this woman

  1100. has done

  1101. has lined

  1102. up with

  1103. his

  1104. redemptive

  1105. purposes,

  1106. his

  1107. sacrificial

  1108. death.

  1109. She has

  1110. anointed

  1111. his body

  1112. for burial

  1113. after

  1114. crucifixion

  1115. on the

  1116. Passover.

  1117. Passover.

  1118. Quite a

  1119. contrast to

  1120. Caiaphas,

  1121. and it's

  1122. quite a

  1123. contrast to

  1124. Judas.

  1125. And this

  1126. is the

  1127. fourth section

  1128. of this

  1129. passage.

  1130. In verses

  1131. 14 through

  1132. 16,

  1133. then one

  1134. of the

  1135. twelve,

  1136. whose name

  1137. was Judas

  1138. Iscariot,

  1139. went to

  1140. the chief

  1141. priest and

  1142. said,

  1143. what will

  1144. you give

  1145. me if I

  1146. deliver him

  1147. over to

  1148. you?

  1149. And they

  1150. paid him

  1151. thirty

  1152. pieces of

  1153. silver,

  1154. and from

  1155. that moment

  1156. he sought

  1157. an opportunity

  1158. to betray

  1159. him.

  1160. We've got

  1161. another

  1162. contrast.

  1163. This

  1164. unnamed

  1165. woman is

  1166. now contrasted

  1167. with another

  1168. named man,

  1169. Judas

  1170. Iscariot.

  1171. Now this

  1172. is the

  1173. one who

  1174. would have

  1175. walked with

  1176. Jesus for

  1177. a long

  1178. time.

  1179. He would

  1180. have seen

  1181. first hand

  1182. what Jesus

  1183. has done.

  1184. He would

  1185. have heard

  1186. with his

  1187. own ears

  1188. the teaching

  1189. that Jesus

  1190. taught to

  1191. the astonishment

  1192. of the

  1193. crowds.

  1194. He would

  1195. have handled

  1196. the baskets

  1197. of the

  1198. leftover bread

  1199. of the

  1200. feeding of

  1201. the five

  1202. thousand and

  1203. four thousand.

  1204. He was

  1205. there.

  1206. He was

  1207. in the

  1208. boat when

  1209. Jesus calmed

  1210. the raging

  1211. seas.

  1212. He was

  1213. there.

  1214. He saw

  1215. first hand

  1216. people raised

  1217. from the

  1218. dead.

  1219. He was

  1220. there.

  1221. He saw

  1222. demons

  1223. exercised.

  1224. He saw

  1225. the blind

  1226. see.

  1227. He saw

  1228. the lame

  1229. walk,

  1230. the sick

  1231. healed.

  1232. Of all

  1233. people,

  1234. why

  1235. Judas?

  1236. Judas.

  1237. We're not

  1238. really told.

  1239. But what we

  1240. know is like

  1241. Caiaphas,

  1242. he opposed

  1243. Jesus.

  1244. You know

  1245. what's safe

  1246. to say?

  1247. Jesus is

  1248. not

  1249. Judas'

  1250. Lord.

  1251. If you

  1252. want to flip

  1253. back with me

  1254. to the

  1255. Sermon on

  1256. the Mount,

  1257. here's some

  1258. sobering

  1259. words.

  1260. could you

  1261. imagine if

  1262. Judas was

  1263. there,

  1264. what he

  1265. was thinking

  1266. and what

  1267. Jesus would

  1268. have been

  1269. thinking?

  1270. Matthew

    Matthew 7:21

  1271. chapter 7

  1272. verse 21,

  1273. not everyone

  1274. who says to

  1275. me,

  1276. Lord,

  1277. Lord,

  1278. will enter

  1279. the kingdom

  1280. of heaven,

  1281. but the

  1282. one who

  1283. does the

  1284. will of

  1285. my father

  1286. who is

  1287. in heaven.

  1288. On

  1289. that day

  1290. many will

  1291. say to

  1292. me,

  1293. Lord,

  1294. Lord,

  1295. did we

  1296. not

  1297. prophesy

  1298. in your

  1299. name and

  1300. cast out

  1301. demons

  1302. in your

  1303. name and

  1304. do many

  1305. mighty

  1306. works in

  1307. your

  1308. name?

  1309. And

  1310. then will

  1311. I

  1312. declare to

  1313. them,

  1314. I never

  1315. knew you.

  1316. depart from

  1317. me,

  1318. you

  1319. workers

  1320. of

  1321. lawlessness.

  1322. You want

  1323. to see

  1324. what Jesus

  1325. is going

  1326. to say

  1327. to Judas?

  1328. We're

  1329. going to

  1330. talk about

  1331. this next

  1332. week,

  1333. but if you

  1334. look at

  1335. chapter 26

  1336. verse 24,

  1337. this is what

  1338. Jesus has

  1339. to say to

  1340. Judas.

  1341. The son

  1342. of man

  1343. goes and

  1344. is written

  1345. of him,

  1346. but woe

  1347. to the

  1348. man by

  1349. whom the

  1350. son of

  1351. man is

  1352. betrayed.

  1353. It would

  1354. have been

  1355. better for

  1356. that man

  1357. Judas if

  1358. he had

  1359. not been

  1360. born.

  1361. what this

  1362. man does

  1363. here is

  1364. the complete

  1365. opposite of

  1366. this beautiful

  1367. devotion by

  1368. an unnamed

  1369. woman.

  1370. It is a

  1371. diabolical act

  1372. of betrayal

  1373. by a named

  1374. man.

  1375. And if you

  1376. notice where

  1377. he goes,

  1378. he goes to

  1379. the chief

  1380. priests in

  1381. verse 14,

  1382. he goes to

  1383. them,

  1384. and he

  1385. goes to

  1386. them asking,

  1387. what will

  1388. you give

  1389. me if I

  1390. deliver him

  1391. over to

  1392. you?

  1393. If Matthew

  1394. gives us

  1395. anything as

  1396. far as

  1397. motive,

  1398. it's money.

  1399. The

  1400. team

  1401. Caiaphas

  1402. now has

  1403. an inside

  1404. man,

  1405. and that

  1406. inside man

  1407. is going

  1408. to get

  1409. paid to

  1410. show them

  1411. an opportunity

  1412. when Jesus

  1413. is away

  1414. from the

  1415. crowds,

  1416. Gethsemane.

  1417. And

  1418. Judas does

  1419. it for

  1420. 30 pieces

  1421. of silver.

  1422. That might

  1423. sound like,

  1424. whoa,

  1425. 30 pieces

  1426. of silver,

  1427. wow,

  1428. that's

  1429. impressive.

  1430. It's not.

  1431. 30 pieces

  1432. of silver

  1433. in our

  1434. day was

  1435. about

  1436. $7,500.

  1437. $7,500.

  1438. It was a

  1439. paltry sum

  1440. of money

  1441. to hand

  1442. over God

  1443. incarnate

  1444. to die.

  1445. But it was

  1446. all according

  1447. to plan.

  1448. It's quite a

  1449. contrast.

  1450. The name

  1451. Judas,

  1452. the unnamed

  1453. woman,

  1454. the delivering

  1455. over to

  1456. death,

  1457. but for a

  1458. paltry sum,

  1459. and then

  1460. the preparing

  1461. for burial

  1462. at great

  1463. cost.

  1464. Judas,

  1465. the name

  1466. remembered as

  1467. a perpetual

  1468. evil.

  1469. Have you ever

  1470. been called

  1471. a Judas?

  1472. And this

  1473. unnamed

  1474. woman remembered

  1475. always for

  1476. good.

  1477. The final

  1478. section is

  1479. in verses

  1480. 17 through

  1481. 19.

  1482. We read,

  1483. now on the

  1484. first day of

  1485. unleavened bread,

  1486. the disciples

  1487. came to Jesus

  1488. saying,

  1489. where will you

  1490. have us

  1491. prepare for you

  1492. to eat the

  1493. Passover?

  1494. He said,

  1495. go into the

  1496. city to a

  1497. certain man

  1498. and say to

  1499. him,

  1500. the teacher

  1501. says,

  1502. my time

  1503. is at

  1504. hand.

  1505. I will

  1506. keep the

  1507. Passover

  1508. at your

  1509. house with

  1510. my disciples.

  1511. And the

  1512. disciples did

  1513. as Jesus

  1514. had directed

  1515. them,

  1516. and they

  1517. prepared the

  1518. Passover.

  1519. What Matthew

  1520. does here is

  1521. he bookends

  1522. this passage

  1523. with Passover

  1524. talk.

  1525. He wants

  1526. you to be

  1527. thinking about

  1528. Christ's death

  1529. in terms of

  1530. Passover.

  1531. And I'm not

  1532. sure if you

  1533. noticed this,

  1534. but in

  1535. verse 18,

  1536. when Jesus

  1537. says,

  1538. my time

  1539. is at

  1540. hand,

  1541. he's speaking

  1542. of his

  1543. death.

  1544. The Passover

  1545. has arrived.

  1546. It's two days

  1547. later now.

  1548. The Passover

  1549. has come.

  1550. They need to

  1551. start preparing

  1552. the meal.

  1553. I'll elaborate

  1554. that next week.

  1555. But what Jesus

  1556. is saying,

  1557. with the coming

  1558. of the Passover

  1559. is the coming

  1560. of his time

  1561. to die.

  1562. my time

  1563. is at

  1564. hand.

  1565. This passage

  1566. begins and

  1567. ends with the

  1568. bookends of

  1569. Passover.

  1570. And the way

  1571. that Jesus

  1572. talks about

  1573. it, it

  1574. sounds like

  1575. he's in

  1576. total control.

  1577. It's going to

  1578. happen in two

  1579. days.

  1580. My time is

  1581. at hand.

  1582. And it's

  1583. true.

  1584. This is

  1585. God-ordained,

  1586. all of it

  1587. from beginning

  1588. to end.

  1589. Let me try

  1590. to summarize

  1591. these five

  1592. sections in a

  1593. slightly different

  1594. way.

  1595. This passage,

  1596. these five

  1597. seconds, the

  1598. first section

  1599. and the

  1600. fifth section

  1601. are Passover

  1602. fulfillment spoken

  1603. by Jesus.

  1604. It's about

  1605. him.

  1606. He's the

  1607. ultimate

  1608. Passover

  1609. sacrifice.

  1610. And then

  1611. section two

  1612. and four,

  1613. these are

  1614. sections about

  1615. treachery.

  1616. And then the

  1617. middle section,

  1618. the third

  1619. section, is

  1620. this unnamed

  1621. woman who

  1622. does this

  1623. beautiful thing

  1624. preparing Jesus

  1625. for his

  1626. burial.

  1627. It's all

  1628. surrounded by

  1629. God's

  1630. sovereignty.

  1631. Here's the

  1632. point of it

  1633. all.

  1634. God wants

  1635. us to

  1636. think about

  1637. Christ's

  1638. death in

  1639. terms of

  1640. Passover.

  1641. He wants

  1642. us to be

  1643. thinking about

  1644. what Christ

  1645. did as

  1646. sacrifice.

  1647. And he

  1648. orchestrated it

  1649. all by his

  1650. sovereignty, both

  1651. the good, the

  1652. indifferent, and

  1653. the really ugly.

  1654. It was all under

  1655. God's sovereignty

  1656. to bring about

  1657. the greatest

  1658. sacrifice ever

  1659. made for all

  1660. people.

  1661. So we

  1662. must see

  1663. Christ's

  1664. death as

  1665. the ultimate

  1666. Passover

  1667. sacrifice.

  1668. He's the

  1669. greatest

  1670. sacrifice.

  1671. It's who he

  1672. is.

  1673. He's God in

  1674. the flesh.

  1675. His blood

  1676. shed and

  1677. God's wrath

  1678. passes over.

  1679. And he

  1680. accomplished the

  1681. greatest

  1682. deliverance.

  1683. Deliverance

  1684. from the

  1685. captivity to

  1686. sin.

  1687. Deliverance

  1688. from the

  1689. fear of

  1690. death.

  1691. Deliverance

  1692. from the

  1693. domain of

  1694. the devil.

  1695. And he

  1696. establishes

  1697. through this

  1698. death a

  1699. whole new

  1700. people, the

  1701. church.

  1702. We need to

  1703. be thinking

  1704. about Christ's

  1705. death as

  1706. the ultimate

  1707. Passover

  1708. sacrifice that

  1709. has launched

  1710. a whole new

  1711. season of

  1712. salvation on

  1713. earth.

  1714. I want to

  1715. help apply

  1716. this in

  1717. three ways.

  1718. First, I

  1719. want you to

  1720. realize that

  1721. this sacrifice

  1722. that Jesus

  1723. speaks of,

  1724. he's your

  1725. sacrifice.

  1726. In

  1727. Matthew,

  1728. Matthew

  1729. begins in

  1730. Matthew 1

  1731. with this

  1732. Emmanuel who

  1733. is going to

  1734. be named

  1735. Jesus.

  1736. The Lord

  1737. saves.

  1738. He will

  1739. deliver his

  1740. people from

  1741. their sins.

  1742. And then for

  1743. the rest of

  1744. Matthew, you

  1745. have these

  1746. passion

  1747. predictions of

  1748. how God

  1749. will save

  1750. his people.

  1751. And it's

  1752. finally realized

  1753. here, Matthew

  1754. 26 and

  1755. 27.

  1756. He is

  1757. the sacrifice.

  1758. He is

  1759. the one

  1760. who would

  1761. sacrifice himself

  1762. for his

  1763. people as

  1764. a ransom.

  1765. So it

  1766. fulfills

  1767. Matthew's

  1768. purpose.

  1769. This one

  1770. who would

  1771. save, saves

  1772. by being a

  1773. Passover

  1774. sacrifice.

  1775. But it's

  1776. just not

  1777. Matthew.

  1778. There's this

  1779. whole Old

  1780. Testament story

  1781. of Passover

  1782. beginning in

  1783. Exodus chapter

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  1784. 12.

  1785. God delivers

  1786. his people and

  1787. it was a real

  1788. deliverance.

  1789. But God

  1790. also had

  1791. that aimed

  1792. at being

  1793. ultimately

  1794. fulfilled in

  1795. the ultimate

  1796. Passover

  1797. sacrifice,

  1798. Jesus.

  1799. A greater

  1800. sacrifice to

  1801. accomplish a

  1802. greater deliverance

  1803. for a greater

  1804. number of

  1805. people.

  1806. Do you

  1807. remember John

  1808. the Baptist

  1809. when he lays

  1810. eyes on Jesus

  1811. in John 1?

  1812. Behold, the

  1813. Lamb of God

  1814. who comes to

  1815. take away the

  1816. sins of the

  1817. world.

  1818. sacrifice.

  1819. Ultimate

  1820. Passover.

  1821. In 1 Corinthians

  1822. 5, 7, the

  1823. Apostle Paul, he's

  1824. writing to a

  1825. primarily Gentile

  1826. church.

  1827. He says to

  1828. them, for

  1829. Christ, our

  1830. Passover

  1831. Lamb has

  1832. been sacrificed.

  1833. He's paid

  1834. it.

  1835. It's done.

  1836. This morning, I

  1837. want you to

  1838. realize if you're

  1839. a believer in

  1840. this room, the

  1841. sacrifice has

  1842. been made.

  1843. It's over.

  1844. He's delivered

  1845. you.

  1846. God's wrath has

  1847. passed over you.

  1848. He's called you

  1849. out and delivered

  1850. you from captivity

  1851. to sin.

  1852. And he's brought

  1853. you into the

  1854. sweetness of being

  1855. in relationship with

  1856. him amongst the

  1857. new people of the

  1858. church.

  1859. church.

  1860. If you're in this

  1861. room and you

  1862. have not received

  1863. Christ as your

  1864. Savior and King,

  1865. you need to

  1866. realize God is

  1867. offering you today

  1868. this sacrifice.

  1869. It's available

  1870. and effectual.

  1871. It will change

  1872. you.

  1873. This sacrifice

  1874. is your sacrifice.

  1875. His Passover

  1876. sacrifice is

  1877. for you.

  1878. And it's God's

  1879. eternal plan that

  1880. he sovereignly

  1881. accomplished.

  1882. The second thing

  1883. I want you to

  1884. see is by way

  1885. of resolution.

  1886. Caiaphas,

  1887. Judas,

  1888. they betrayed

  1889. Jesus.

  1890. They were

  1891. opposed to him.

  1892. The disciples,

  1893. they were at

  1894. best indifferent.

  1895. And what we're

  1896. going to see in

  1897. the rest of this

  1898. story is that

  1899. these disciples are

  1900. going to fall

  1901. away in cowardice.

  1902. And it's not

  1903. until after the

  1904. resurrection with

  1905. an outpouring of

  1906. the Holy Spirit,

  1907. these cowardly

  1908. disciples are made

  1909. courageous

  1910. proclaimers.

  1911. But it's this

  1912. woman that we

  1913. must resolve to

  1914. be like, to line

  1915. up with Christ's

  1916. purposes.

  1917. Her heart was

  1918. one of a humble

  1919. worship of her

  1920. Christ.

  1921. She was giving

  1922. him the best

  1923. she could at

  1924. the time.

  1925. And man, she

  1926. got criticized

  1927. for it.

  1928. But Jesus

  1929. defended her.

  1930. I don't know

  1931. where you are

  1932. in the room.

  1933. I don't know

  1934. what you're

  1935. thinking about in

  1936. terms of giving

  1937. to Jesus your

  1938. best.

  1939. But let me

  1940. urge you, give

  1941. him everything.

  1942. Give him your

  1943. entire life.

  1944. Live for him.

  1945. And if you get

  1946. criticized for

  1947. being too loud or

  1948. too lavish, do you

  1949. know what?

  1950. Jesus will take

  1951. care of you.

  1952. Leave it to your

  1953. Lord.

  1954. Here's a New Year's

  1955. resolution.

  1956. Here's a life

  1957. resolution.

  1958. just like this

  1959. unnamed woman

  1960. who did a

  1961. beautiful thing

  1962. to Jesus.

  1963. Would you line

  1964. up your life

  1965. with him?

  1966. Line it up

  1967. with his

  1968. purposes.

  1969. And he will

  1970. take what you

  1971. give him and

  1972. he will use it

  1973. for his glory.

  1974. The last piece

  1975. of application

  1976. is

  1977. encouragement.

  1978. all throughout

  1979. this particular

  1980. section, you

  1981. see Team

  1982. Caiaphas and

  1983. you see the

  1984. betrayer and

  1985. you see the

  1986. indifferent

  1987. disciples and

  1988. you even see

  1989. this incredible

  1990. outpouring of

  1991. devotion from

  1992. this unnamed

  1993. woman.

  1994. All of it

  1995. is being

  1996. sovereignly worked

  1997. out by God.

  1998. All of it.

  1999. All of it.

  2000. God is

  2001. working all

  2002. things out

  2003. in his

  2004. sovereign,

  2005. wise care.

  2006. God's

  2007. sovereignty is

  2008. not just

  2009. limited to a

  2010. week in

  2011. 33 A.D.

  2012. God is

  2013. sovereign,

  2014. just as

  2015. sovereign now,

  2016. working out

  2017. circumstances

  2018. for those

  2019. who are

  2020. humble to

  2021. save.

  2022. So be

  2023. encouraged.

  2024. God is

  2025. as sovereign

  2026. as ever.

  2027. And if you

  2028. resolve to

  2029. line your

  2030. life up with

  2031. him, he

  2032. will make

  2033. much of it.

  2034. He will use

  2035. it for his

  2036. glory and

  2037. point others

  2038. to him.

  2039. Our great

  2040. Passover

  2041. sacrifice.

  2042. Let's pray.

  2043. God in

  2044. heaven,

  2045. God,

  2046. we ask

  2047. that you

  2048. would make

  2049. much of

  2050. yourself in

  2051. and through

  2052. us as your

  2053. church.

  2054. Lord, it

  2055. would be our

  2056. greatest joy to

  2057. think of you

  2058. saying to us,

  2059. you have done a

  2060. beautiful thing.

  2061. God, would you

  2062. help us

  2063. individually and as

  2064. a church to

  2065. line up our

  2066. lives with your

  2067. kingdom purposes,

  2068. to resolve today

  2069. and tomorrow

  2070. and however long

  2071. you give us to

  2072. be about your

  2073. fame, your

  2074. glory, your

  2075. redemptive purposes

  2076. around the world.

  2077. God, we don't

  2078. need notoriety.

  2079. We would rather go

  2080. unnamed so that

  2081. your name is

  2082. glorified among all

  2083. people.

  2084. forcómo.

  2085. It's in the name

  2086. of Jesus

  2087. we pray.

  2088. Amen.
