  1. Maybe it was when you tried out for a sports team,

  2. or a musical group, or a theater troupe.

  3. Maybe it was when you were vying for a promotion at work.

  4. Maybe it was from a spouse,

  5. or from a family member,

  6. you were rejected.

  7. We all know what rejection is.

  8. We've all experienced rejection in some measure.

  9. Maybe you felt rejection from even a church.

  10. People who should be committed to you,

  11. but you felt like they rejected you.

  12. This morning, I want to let you know that

  13. Jesus thoroughly understands what it means to be rejected.

  14. This morning, we're going to look at a passage in Matthew chapter 27,

    Matthew 27:11–26

  15. verses 11 through 26.

  16. And in this passage, we're going to see Jesus,

  17. the Messiah, the long-awaited King,

  18. the one in whom the whole Old Testament is anticipating to come

  19. and take up David's throne and bring in a forever kingdom.

  20. He's going to be rejected today.

  21. He was innocent,

  22. but he went willingly,

  23. and he was rejected.

  24. This morning, we're going to look at the trial of Jesus,

  25. the Roman trial of Jesus before Pilate,

  26. and this trial is going to unfold in three scenes.

  27. The first scene is Pilate asking Jesus some questions,

  28. and the second scene is Pilate asking a Jewish crowd some questions,

  29. and the last scene is the verdict.

  30. Who makes the verdict?

  31. Scene one.

  32. Jesus is questioned by Pilate.

  33. Matthew 27, this is verses 11 through 14.

  34. We read,

  35. Now Jesus stood before the governor,

  36. and the governor asked him,

  37. the governor is Pilate,

  38. Are you the king of the Jews?

  39. Jesus said,

  40. You have said so.

  41. But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,

  42. he gave no answer.

  43. Then Pilate said to him,

  44. Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?

  45. But Jesus gave him no answer,

  46. not even to a single charge,

  47. so that the governor, Pilate, was greatly amazed.

  48. Now, you may be asking the question,

  49. What is Jesus doing there,

  50. standing before this Roman magistrate?

  51. Verse 11,

  52. Now Jesus stood before the governor.

  53. How did that happen?

  54. Here's what this passage is going to tell us.

  55. How a Jewish Messiah ends up on a Roman cross.

  56. As part of Roman occupation and control of Jerusalem in Israel,

  57. part of the authority structure in understanding of the time was this.

  58. Only Romans had the authority to kill somebody.

  59. Only they could exercise capital punishment.

  60. And so there's a reason why Jesus is standing before Pilate,

  61. the Roman magistrate of that place and time.

  62. The chief priests and elders did not have the authority to legally kill Jesus,

  63. even if they found him guilty of death.

  64. Which brings us back to Matthew chapter 26, 63 through 66.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  65. It's Caiaphas' house.

  66. He's the high priest, the Sanhedrin,

  67. this kind of Jewish at this moment.

  68. It's a little bit of a kangaroo court.

  69. They pronounce Jesus guilty of blasphemy in verse 65.

  70. He's claiming to be someone he's not.

  71. And then in verse 66, they condemn him to death.

  72. But they don't have the authority to kill him.

  73. So they need to get the Roman magistrate on board.

  74. It's Pontius Pilate that has to condemn Jesus to death

  75. in order for him to die.

  76. And so what we see happening in chapter 27, verses 1 and 2,

  77. it's early morning now.

  78. It's been an all-nighter by the Sanhedrin.

  79. They've been up all night.

  80. And now they have brought a charge.

  81. Jesus is a blasphemer worthy of death.

  82. And in 27, 1 and 2, when morning came, early morning,

  83. all the chief priests and the elders of the people

  84. took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.

  85. How to put him to death?

  86. And they bound him and led him away

  87. and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.

  88. The whole Sanhedrin trial,

  89. the Jewish trial of Jesus took place in Caiaphas' house.

  90. And so what happens in 27, 1 and 2,

  91. they bind Jesus up and they bring him to Herod's castle,

  92. which was the praetorium.

  93. This is where the Roman magistrate would be

  94. when he was in Jerusalem.

  95. And so they parade him through Jerusalem early that morning.

  96. The first morning, the first Good Friday morning.

  97. And so what we see happening in 27, 1 and 2,

  98. these chief priests and elders taking counsel together against Jesus.

  99. Do you realize what they're doing?

  100. They're trying to figure out how they can get Pilate to condemn this Jew.

  101. And they come up with a plan.

  102. Because they know that when they bring them before Pilate,

  103. if they say,

  104. Pilate, we bring this lawbreaker to you,

  105. this blasphemer to you,

  106. and this blasphemy is worthy of death.

  107. Do you know what Pilate would say?

  108. Not in the eyes of Rome.

  109. It's not grounds for capital punishment.

  110. So they had to think of a different charge.

  111. And do you know what the charge they came up with?

  112. Sedition.

  113. Treason.

  114. They're going to charge Jesus with being a king

  115. who's seeking to undermine the Roman rule

  116. and ultimately be opposed to Caesar.

  117. Now that's something Pilate would have to take seriously.

  118. And so what we see happening in 27, 11.

  119. Now Jesus stood before the governor

  120. and Pilate asked him this question.

  121. Are you the king of the Jews?

  122. Charges have already been brought.

  123. He's claiming to be the king of Israel.

  124. The Jews, Pilate.

  125. Do something about it.

  126. So Pilate asks him,

  127. Are you the king of the Jews?

  128. Are you a threat to Caesar?

  129. Are you a threat to Rome?

  130. Pilate's asking this question

  131. because these are the charges

  132. that the chief priests and elders

  133. have leveled against Jesus.

  134. He's being charged with being a rival king.

  135. Jesus answers this

  136. and his answer is measured.

  137. You have said so.

  138. It's an interesting answer.

  139. You have said so.

  140. You're saying it.

  141. It's coming out of your mouth.

  142. If Jesus had just said yes,

  143. Pilate would have understood him

  144. as making a claim of being an earthly king.

  145. And Jesus is saying,

  146. I'm beyond an earthly king.

  147. We see that played out in John 19, 33 through 38

  148. where actually John records a conversation

  149. between Jesus and Pilate

  150. and Jesus makes it clear

  151. that his kingdom is not of this world.

  152. Now if Jesus said no,

  153. he would be denying his kingship.

  154. And so Jesus says,

  155. you've said so.

  156. And so he maintains his innocence

  157. and forces Pilate to have to make

  158. a really difficult decision.

  159. And then we see the next question

  160. which comes in verse 13.

  161. Then Pilate said to him,

  162. do you not hear how many things

  163. they testify against you?

  164. Look at verse 12.

  165. But when he was accused

  166. by the chief priests and elders,

  167. he gave no answer.

  168. So here's the situation.

  169. Throughout the praetorium,

  170. we learn from John

  171. that the chief priests and elders

  172. don't go into Herod's palace

  173. because that would defile them

  174. on the day before the Sabbath.

  175. And so they're staying outside

  176. while Jesus is inside

  177. and Pilate's kind of going back and forth

  178. and Jesus can hear the whole thing.

  179. And these chief priests and elders

  180. are making accusations about Jesus

  181. in addition to him claiming to be

  182. an insurrectionist,

  183. to be treasonous.

  184. They're loading it up.

  185. And so Pilate's hearing all this

  186. being accused of Jesus.

  187. And Jesus doesn't answer them a thing.

  188. And it gets Pilate's attention.

  189. And so in verse 13, he asks,

  190. do you not hear how many things

  191. they testify against you?

  192. Are you not hearing this?

  193. Jesus, are you not hearing this?

  194. They want to kill you.

  195. Do you not get how serious this is?

  196. And in verse 14,

  197. Jesus doesn't answer Pilate.

  198. But he gave Pilate no answer,

  199. not even to a single charge,

  200. so that the governor was greatly amazed.

  201. So Jesus is silent to the charges

  202. of the chief priests and elders.

  203. He's silent to Pilate's asking of a question

  204. for why aren't you responding?

  205. Here's what should be going through your mind.

  206. Isaiah 53, 7,

  207. he was oppressed and he was afflicted,

  208. yet he opened not his mouth

  209. like a lamb that is led to the slaughter.

  210. Remember, this is Passover.

  211. And like a sheep that before its shearers

  212. is silent,

  213. so he opened not his mouth.

  214. His silence was purposeful.

  215. He's intentionally being quiet.

  216. And it impressed Pilate.

  217. He's greatly amazed.

  218. Jesus is not seeking to defend himself

  219. at all costs.

  220. I mean, how many of these trials

  221. has Pilate overseen?

  222. And when a charge like this,

  223. he's used to people freaking out

  224. and trying to defend themselves

  225. at all costs.

  226. They don't want to die.

  227. Jesus is not saying a word.

  228. It leaves an impression.

  229. So here at the end of scene one,

  230. we have this accusation made against Jesus,

  231. but he's not saying anything.

  232. He's standing before Pilate

  233. and he's not responding.

  234. He's silent.

  235. He's silent.

  236. Pilate.

  237. What we start to see here is that

  238. Pilate doesn't believe he's guilty.

  239. Pilate's starting to see

  240. this man is no threat to Rome.

  241. He's amazed that he's not responding,

  242. but this guy,

  243. he's no threat to Caesar.

  244. and so what we're going to start seeing is that

  245. not only is Pilate unconvinced of the guilt of Jesus

  246. he says so much in John 19 I find no guilt in him

  247. what we're going to start seeing now is Pilate starts to seek a way to

  248. release Jesus so what's being established here by

  249. Matthew is that Jesus is under trial

  250. by Pilate, Pilate is finding him

  251. innocent Jesus is remaining silent and he's getting

  252. accused by his own

  253. scene 2, Pilate questions the crowd

  254. now remember this is all during the feast this is all during the Passover

  255. just hours before Jesus has practiced Passover

  256. observed it with his disciples and he completely renewed it

  257. to focus on him, his body breaking of the bread

  258. his blood this cup

  259. he's retooled Passover to be about his great sacrifice that he's going to make

  260. so in verse 15 we learn about a custom that took place in Jerusalem during the Passover

  261. and it's this now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted

  262. now we don't know how long this custom had been going on

  263. but apparently there's this practice with which the Roman governor of the time Pontius Pilate appointed by Rome to maintain Roman rule

  264. he would grant on Passover amnesty for one prisoner a prisoner of the crowd's choosing

  265. it was great political maneuvering

  266. it was great political maneuvering

  267. and so this custom is taking place

  268. the

  269. the chief priests and elders would have known

  270. about it and of course

  271. Pilate would have known about it

  272. and of course the Jews living in Jerusalem

  273. would know about it

  274. that's why they're at the Roman

  275. Praetorium right now

  276. in verse 16

  277. we read

  278. and they had

  279. then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas

  280. it's really important for you to understand who they is a reference to

  281. they is a reference most likely to the Jewish crowd

  282. they had already picked their prisoner

  283. Barabbas

  284. and what we read

  285. is that he was notorious

  286. the original language is more like notable

  287. to Romans he was notorious

  288. to the Jews living in Jerusalem

  289. he would have been more like a hero

  290. like a freedom fighter

  291. we learn from Luke 23 19

  292. that Barabbas was actually an insurrectionist

  293. and a murderer

  294. what he would represent

  295. is for all those in Jerusalem

  296. who wanted to be free of Roman rule

  297. this guy

  298. this guy was the guy

  299. he was using violence

  300. to try to get Rome

  301. out of Jerusalem

  302. he would have been a freedom fighter

  303. so for many in Jerusalem

  304. he would have been thought of as a hero

  305. Rome would have seen him as a threat

  306. what we know is that he was a political figure

  307. representing the will of many in Jerusalem

  308. and what I want you to understand is that

  309. they most likely refers to the Jews in Jerusalem

  310. and here comes question three

  311. the first question to the crowd

  312. so when they had gathered

  313. Pilate said to them

  314. whom do you want me to release for you

  315. Barabbas or Jesus

  316. who's called

  317. the Christ

  318. so what

  319. Pilate is essentially doing is

  320. is

  321. I know you want me to release Barabbas already

  322. but

  323. but how about this Jesus

  324. you know

  325. the Christ

  326. Messiah

  327. your king

  328. Pilate doesn't think

  329. Jesus is guilty of the charges

  330. that have been made against him

  331. and so

  332. he's seeking to use this custom

  333. to release Jesus

  334. he's given this crowd an opportunity

  335. Pilate at this point

  336. would have known that Jesus

  337. had gained a following in Jerusalem

  338. that he was well thought of by many in Jerusalem

  339. and so what he's putting to this Jewish crowd is

  340. who are you going to choose

  341. you're going to choose the insurrectionist

  342. Barabbas

  343. murderer

  344. or are you going to choose

  345. the Christ

  346. Jesus

  347. the king

  348. who are you going to pick

  349. in verse 17

  350. we start

  351. learning of

  352. what

  353. is behind

  354. this

  355. decision to

  356. offer Jesus

  357. with Barabbas

  358. verse 17

  359. it says

  360. Pilate knew that the chief priests

  361. and elders

  362. were envious

  363. of Jesus

  364. and it was out of envy

  365. that they had delivered him up

  366. excuse me

  367. that's verse 18

  368. they were envious

  369. of Jesus

  370. fame and favor

  371. with the crowds

  372. and they resented

  373. his public rebukes

  374. so Pilate

  375. is giving this crowd

  376. an opportunity

  377. to circumvent

  378. the envy

  379. of the chief priests

  380. and elders

  381. he's giving them

  382. an opportunity

  383. to

  384. through this custom

  385. to choose Jesus

  386. despite the envy

  387. of the chief priests

  388. and elders

  389. he's saying

  390. who do you want to pick

  391. who do you want to pick

  392. who do you want me

  393. to release to you

  394. the murderer

  395. or Jesus

  396. and in verse 19

  397. there's still further reason

  398. why we see

  399. Pilate

  400. doing this

  401. we learn about

  402. his wife

  403. besides

  404. while he was sitting

  405. on the judgment seat

  406. his wife sent word

  407. to him

  408. have nothing to do

  409. with that righteous man

  410. for I have suffered much

  411. because of him today

  412. I'm in a dream

  413. Pilate's wife

  414. sent him a message

  415. while he's on

  416. his judgment seat

  417. while he's

  418. exercising decisions

  419. now

  420. it must have been urgent

  421. so for my wife

  422. to send me a text

  423. or to call me

  424. while I'm in a staff meeting

  425. or an elder meeting

  426. something like that

  427. I know this is urgent

  428. and she says

  429. have nothing to do

  430. with that righteous man

  431. in reference to Jesus

  432. for I have suffered much

  433. because of him today

  434. in a dream

  435. we're not told

  436. the content

  437. of the dream

  438. we just know

  439. that she suffered

  440. because of it

  441. but what we know

  442. about Romans

  443. is they believed

  444. that dreams

  445. were omens

  446. from the gods

  447. and this would have

  448. been a bad omen

  449. but in Matthew

  450. this is not the first time

  451. we read about dreams

  452. in Matthew 1 and 2 alone

  453. there are five dreams

  454. that God uses

  455. to direct people

  456. to do his will

  457. so in light of that

  458. it makes sense

  459. that we have this

  460. kind of idea

  461. that behind this troubling dream

  462. is God

  463. God's at work

  464. and this dream

  465. of

  466. this dream of hers

  467. affects her

  468. and she contacts

  469. her husband

  470. and it affects him

  471. goes into

  472. why he wants

  473. to release Jesus

  474. by the way

  475. that word

  476. for righteous man

  477. you gotta hear

  478. what he's saying

  479. he's done

  480. no wrong

  481. now I need

  482. to clarify something

  483. there's nothing

  484. in the gospels

  485. that would make

  486. one conclude

  487. that Pilate

  488. or his wife

  489. was a follower

  490. of Jesus

  491. neither of them

  492. are pronouncing

  493. that he's

  494. lord of their life

  495. but what we are

  496. seeing here

  497. is that this

  498. gentile magistrate

  499. despite the

  500. accusations

  501. of the Jews

  502. he sees

  503. the innocence

  504. of Jesus

  505. he's not guilty

  506. and his

  507. maneuvering

  508. to try to

  509. release

  510. Jesus

  511. is putting

  512. Pilate

  513. at odds

  514. with the Jews

  515. now

  516. between

  517. this

  518. question

  519. in verse

  520. 17

  521. and then

  522. the question

  523. that we read

  524. in verse

  525. 21

  526. it's essentially

  527. the same

  528. question

  529. but there's

  530. an interval

  531. of time

  532. in between

  533. it

  534. and so

  535. Pilate

  536. says

  537. hey

  538. who do you

  539. want me to

  540. release to you

  541. Barabbas

  542. or Jesus

  543. in verse

  544. 17

  545. and he comes

  546. back to it

  547. in verse

  548. 21

  549. so who have

  550. you decided

  551. so there's

  552. this period

  553. of time

  554. in between

  555. and in that

  556. period of time

  557. verse 20

  558. now the chief

  559. priests

  560. and the elders

  561. persuaded the

  562. crowd to ask

  563. for Barabbas

  564. and destroy

  565. Jesus

  566. and so

  567. when we get

  568. to verse 21

  569. which of the two

  570. do you want me

  571. to release

  572. to you

  573. without hesitation

  574. the crowds

  575. respond

  576. Barabbas

  577. they've made

  578. their decision

  579. and yet

  580. Pilate isn't

  581. done seeking

  582. to release

  583. Jesus

  584. look at the

  585. next question

  586. he asks

  587. the crowd

  588. in verse 22

  589. then what

  590. shall I do

  591. with Jesus

  592. who is called

  593. Christ

  594. it's almost

  595. like this

  596. God

  597. using this

  598. Gentile

  599. magistrate

  600. to speak

  601. a word

  602. to the

  603. Jewish people

  604. what do you

  605. want me to

  606. do with

  607. the Christ

  608. now that

  609. you have

  610. rejected

  611. him

  612. what do you

  613. want me to

  614. do with him

  615. if I'm not

  616. going to

  617. release him

  618. to you

  619. what do you

  620. want me

  621. to do

  622. with him

  623. again

  624. he's hoping

  625. that there

  626. are enough

  627. in this

  628. crowd

  629. to recognize

  630. that Jesus

  631. is not

  632. guilty

  633. but it

  634. totally

  635. backfires

  636. on him

  637. the crowd

  638. doesn't

  639. fight

  640. they all

  641. said

  642. let

  643. him

  644. be

  645. crucified

  646. they're

  647. doing

  648. what the

  649. chief

  650. priest

  651. and

  652. elders

  653. have

  654. persuaded

  655. them

  656. to do

  657. but

  658. they're

  659. doing

  660. it

  661. it's

  662. out

  663. of

  664. their

  665. mouth

  666. release

  667. Barabbas

  668. destroy

  669. Jesus

  670. and in

  671. verse 23

  672. we have

  673. Pilate's

  674. last question

  675. of this

  676. sequence

  677. they're all

  678. questions

  679. so far

  680. and again

  681. he asks

  682. the crowd

  683. why

  684. what evil

  685. has he

  686. done

  687. he doesn't

  688. get it

  689. he doesn't

  690. get why

  691. they're

  692. doing

  693. this

  694. but again

  695. his question

  696. goes to

  697. Jesus

  698. innocence

  699. what evil

  700. has he

  701. done

  702. he hasn't

  703. done

  704. anything

  705. he sees

  706. no guilt

  707. in Jesus

  708. that would

  709. require

  710. crucifixion

  711. capital

  712. punishment

  713. but the

  714. crowds

  715. insist

  716. and they

  717. shout

  718. all the

  719. more

  720. let him

  721. be

  722. crucified

  723. you

  724. remember

  725. what

  726. happened

  727. just days

  728. before

  729. when Jesus

  730. was coming

  731. into

  732. Jerusalem

  733. the crowds

  734. who were

  735. with him

  736. were coming

  737. from Galilee

  738. upon his

  739. entrance

  740. into

  741. Jerusalem

  742. they

  743. had spread

  744. their cloaks

  745. on the road

  746. they had

  747. spread palm

  748. branches

  749. and they

  750. shouted

  751. Hosanna

  752. to the

  753. son of

  754. David

  755. blessed

  756. is he

  757. who comes

  758. in the

  759. name

  760. of the

  761. Lord

  762. Hosanna

  763. God

  764. saves

  765. in the

  766. highest

  767. and while

  768. they were

  769. praising

  770. and declaring

  771. this

  772. the people

  773. of Jerusalem

  774. the residents

  775. there

  776. they were

  777. asking

  778. who is

  779. this guy

  780. and now

  781. this crowd

  782. in verse

  783. 23

  784. they're

  785. shouting

  786. let him

  787. be

  788. crucified

  789. days

  790. earlier

  791. the king

  792. has come

  793. and now

  794. crucify

  795. him

  796. so by

  797. the end

  798. of scene

  799. two

  800. we have

  801. the sense

  802. of Jesus

  803. innocence

  804. but he's

  805. being condemned

  806. to the cross

  807. by his own

  808. which leads

  809. us into

  810. scene

  811. three

  812. the decision

  813. some kind

  814. of decision

  815. who's making

  816. this decision

  817. verse 24

  818. we read

  819. this

  820. so when

  821. Pilate

  822. saw that

  823. he was

  824. gaining

  825. nothing

  826. but rather

  827. a riot

  828. was beginning

  829. he took

  830. water

  831. and washed

  832. his hands

  833. and before

  834. the crowd

  835. saying

  836. washing his

  837. hands

  838. before the

  839. crowd

  840. and saying

  841. I am

  842. innocent

  843. of this

  844. man's

  845. blood

  846. see to

  847. it

  848. yourselves

  849. now

  850. remember

  851. this would

  852. have been

  853. a powder

  854. crag

  855. moment

  856. politically

  857. Passover

  858. Jerusalem

  859. is usually

  860. 30,000

  861. in the city

  862. it's swelled

  863. up to

  864. 180,000

  865. and so

  866. this kind

  867. of event

  868. man

  869. it's loaded

  870. politically

  871. charged

  872. a lot

  873. of lives

  874. are at stake

  875. here

  876. if

  877. Pilate

  878. keeps on

  879. pushing

  880. then who

  881. knows

  882. what's

  883. going to

  884. erupt

  885. a riot

  886. is forming

  887. and so

  888. what we see

  889. here happening

  890. is Pilate

  891. is making

  892. a decision

  893. of expedience

  894. not of

  895. principle

  896. and he

  897. seeks to

  898. absolve

  899. himself

  900. of any

  901. responsibility

  902. he takes

  903. a play

  904. out of a

  905. Jewish

  906. handbook

  907. and washes

  908. his hands

  909. for all

  910. the Jewish

  911. crowds

  912. to see

  913. what's

  914. he going

  915. to eat

  916. that's

  917. not a

  918. Roman

  919. practice

  920. that's

  921. a Jewish

  922. practice

  923. he washes

  924. his hands

  925. in front

  926. of them

  927. and he

  928. says

  929. I am

  930. innocent

  931. of this

  932. man's

  933. blood

  934. his blood

  935. is not

  936. on me

  937. see to

  938. it

  939. yourselves

  940. we bumped

  941. into that

  942. phrase

  943. see to

  944. it

  945. yourself

  946. just

  947. recently

  948. it's

  949. when

  950. Judas

  951. returns

  952. the 30

  953. pieces

  954. of silver

  955. and the

  956. chief priests

  957. and elders

  958. say to him

  959. see to it

  960. yourself

  961. Judas

  962. what they're

  963. saying

  964. hey his

  965. blood

  966. that money

  967. is not

  968. our fault

  969. we're not

  970. responsible

  971. for it

  972. but they

  973. were

  974. responsible

  975. for it

  976. and even

  977. though

  978. Pilate

  979. is trying

  980. to absolve

  981. himself

  982. of responsibility

  983. oh he

  984. is not

  985. innocent

  986. here

  987. there's

  988. nobody

  989. innocent

  990. here

  991. no one

  992. is innocent

  993. there's

  994. one

  995. innocent

  996. person

  997. Jesus

  998. but everybody

  999. else

  1000. they have

  1001. a role

  1002. in this

  1003. Pilate

  1004. has some

  1005. responsibility

  1006. in this

  1007. Jesus

  1008. says as

  1009. much

  1010. in John

  1011. 19

  1012. 11

  1013. where he

  1014. tells

  1015. Pilate

  1016. those

  1017. who

  1018. delivered

  1019. me

  1020. over

  1021. to you

  1022. or have

  1023. greater

  1024. sin

  1025. than you

  1026. but he's

  1027. still

  1028. saying

  1029. you have

  1030. a responsibility

  1031. in this

  1032. Pilate

  1033. he's not

  1034. nearly as

  1035. guilty as

  1036. the chief

  1037. priests

  1038. the elders

  1039. and the

  1040. Jewish

  1041. crowd

  1042. Pilate

  1043. would have

  1044. been between

  1045. a rock

  1046. and a

  1047. hard place

  1048. the chief

  1049. priests

  1050. and elders

  1051. have played

  1052. their hand

  1053. out really

  1054. well

  1055. they're

  1056. forcing

  1057. Pilate

  1058. to give

  1059. into what

  1060. they wanted

  1061. to put

  1062. Jesus

  1063. to death

  1064. and

  1065. eventually

  1066. we learn

  1067. from John

  1068. that they

  1069. even played

  1070. the Caesar

  1071. card

  1072. if you

  1073. release this

  1074. man

  1075. you're not

  1076. Caesar's

  1077. friend

  1078. everyone

  1079. who makes

  1080. himself a

  1081. king

  1082. opposes

  1083. Caesar

  1084. it's called

  1085. political

  1086. leverage

  1087. hey Pilate

  1088. if you

  1089. don't

  1090. condemn him

  1091. we're going

  1092. straight to

  1093. Caesar

  1094. that you

  1095. released

  1096. a king

  1097. that would

  1098. have been

  1099. the end

  1100. of Caesar

  1101. or Pilate's

  1102. career

  1103. upon hearing

  1104. the words

  1105. I am

  1106. innocent

  1107. of this

  1108. man's

  1109. blood

  1110. see to

  1111. it

  1112. yourself

  1113. you

  1114. take

  1115. the

  1116. responsibility

  1117. what we

  1118. read in

  1119. verse 25

  1120. is absolutely

  1121. striking

  1122. in verse 25

  1123. and all

  1124. the people

  1125. answered

  1126. his blood

  1127. be on us

  1128. and on

  1129. our

  1130. children

  1131. his blood

  1132. be on us

  1133. and on

  1134. our

  1135. children

  1136. we hear

  1137. you

  1138. Pilate

  1139. his blood

  1140. on us

  1141. and our

  1142. children

  1143. this is the

  1144. Passover

  1145. folks

  1146. this is the

  1147. Passover

  1148. lamb

  1149. his blood

  1150. be on

  1151. us

  1152. they're not

  1153. talking about

  1154. his blood

  1155. to deliver

  1156. them

  1157. they're not

  1158. talking about

  1159. his blood

  1160. to forgive

  1161. them

  1162. they're talking

  1163. about blood

  1164. guilt

  1165. we take

  1166. responsibility

  1167. for his

  1168. death

  1169. we're killing

  1170. him

  1171. his death

  1172. is on

  1173. us

  1174. they're not

  1175. thinking about

  1176. Jesus

  1177. his blood

  1178. shed for

  1179. them

  1180. to deliver

  1181. them

  1182. they want

  1183. him dead

  1184. there's

  1185. something very

  1186. subtle

  1187. that happens

  1188. in verse 25

  1189. and in order

  1190. to help you

  1191. see it

  1192. we got to

  1193. back up a

  1194. little bit

  1195. in verse 15

  1196. we read this

  1197. now at the

  1198. feast the

  1199. governor was

  1200. accustomed to

  1201. release for

  1202. the crowd

  1203. any one

  1204. prisoner whom

  1205. they wanted

  1206. the crowd

  1207. it was the

  1208. Jews who

  1209. are living in

  1210. Jerusalem who

  1211. had come to

  1212. Herod's palace

  1213. to make a

  1214. case for

  1215. Barabbas

  1216. and then in

  1217. verse 20

  1218. now the chief

  1219. priest and the

  1220. elders persuaded

  1221. the crowd

  1222. the same

  1223. crowd this

  1224. Jewish crowd

  1225. in Jerusalem

  1226. in verse 24

  1227. we read this

  1228. Pilate washed

  1229. his hands

  1230. before the

  1231. crowd saying

  1232. I am innocent

  1233. of this man's

  1234. blood see to

  1235. it yourself

  1236. and then in

  1237. verse 25

  1238. we read this

  1239. and all the

  1240. people answered

  1241. Matthew's

  1242. use of that

  1243. word

  1244. people

  1245. the normal

  1246. use

  1247. is to talk

  1248. about the

  1249. Jewish nation

  1250. this crowd

  1251. is now a

  1252. representative of

  1253. the Jewish

  1254. nation and

  1255. they are

  1256. rejecting

  1257. Jesus as

  1258. their messianic

  1259. king

  1260. and they're

  1261. claiming

  1262. responsibility for

  1263. it by saying

  1264. his blood is

  1265. on our heads

  1266. and on our

  1267. children's

  1268. in less than

  1269. 40 years

  1270. Jerusalem is

  1271. sacked

  1272. the temple is

  1273. raised

  1274. they are

  1275. judged

  1276. there his

  1277. blood was

  1278. on their

  1279. head

  1280. and they

  1281. ceased to

  1282. be the

  1283. people of

  1284. God they

  1285. once were

  1286. they rejected

  1287. their king

  1288. and they

  1289. rejected their

  1290. standing before

  1291. God

  1292. so in this

  1293. last scene

  1294. of this

  1295. Roman trial

  1296. of Jesus

  1297. we have

  1298. essentially

  1299. the Roman

  1300. crowd

  1301. or the

  1302. Jewish

  1303. crowd

  1304. making

  1305. the

  1306. judgment

  1307. they

  1308. reject

  1309. Jesus

  1310. as the

  1311. Christ

  1312. the king

  1313. and they

  1314. force

  1315. Pilate

  1316. to crucify

  1317. him

  1318. and

  1319. Pilate

  1320. concedes

  1321. but the

  1322. greater guilt

  1323. is on

  1324. the people

  1325. and in

  1326. verse 26

  1327. Pilate

  1328. releases

  1329. Barabbas

  1330. and he

  1331. has Jesus

  1332. scourged

  1333. and delivered

  1334. over to

  1335. be crucified

  1336. to be

  1337. scourged

  1338. was horrific

  1339. if you were

  1340. there to see

  1341. it it would

  1342. turn your

  1343. stomach

  1344. they would

  1345. use a

  1346. flagellum

  1347. called a

  1348. cat of

  1349. nine tails

  1350. and what it

  1351. was a

  1352. leather whip

  1353. with nine

  1354. separate whips

  1355. and what it

  1356. would entail

  1357. is they

  1358. would weave

  1359. in bone

  1360. and metal

  1361. and what they

  1362. would do

  1363. is they

  1364. would whip

  1365. a person

  1366. whose

  1367. back is

  1368. exposed

  1369. and then they

  1370. would drag

  1371. it across

  1372. their skin

  1373. and it

  1374. would open

  1375. up their

  1376. back

  1377. it

  1378. fillet

  1379. them

  1380. and they

  1381. would do

  1382. it in

  1383. order to

  1384. prepare them

  1385. for crucifixion

  1386. that they

  1387. would die

  1388. faster

  1389. but here's

  1390. what you

  1391. need to

  1392. notice

  1393. Matthew

  1394. doesn't go

  1395. into the

  1396. details of

  1397. scourging

  1398. do you

  1399. know why

  1400. the emphasis

  1401. is on the

  1402. rejection

  1403. of Jesus

  1404. by his

  1405. people

  1406. the emphasis

  1407. on this

  1408. passage is

  1409. on Jesus

  1410. innocence

  1411. he was

  1412. not guilty

  1413. of sedition

  1414. Barabbas

  1415. was

  1416. Jesus

  1417. says as

  1418. much

  1419. as

  1420. 27

  1421. 4

  1422. when he

  1423. says

  1424. I've

  1425. betrayed

  1426. innocent

  1427. blood

  1428. he's

  1429. talking

  1430. about

  1431. Jesus

  1432. blood

  1433. Pilate's

  1434. wife

  1435. was

  1436. scared

  1437. by the

  1438. dream

  1439. and he

  1440. says

  1441. don't

  1442. have

  1443. anything

  1444. to do

  1445. with

  1446. this

  1447. righteous

  1448. man

  1449. this

  1450. innocent

  1451. man

  1452. Pilate

  1453. himself

  1454. tried

  1455. to

  1456. release

  1457. Jesus

  1458. multiple

  1459. times

  1460. and finally

  1461. asks

  1462. what evil

  1463. has he

  1464. done

  1465. the emphasis

  1466. here is on

  1467. Jesus

  1468. innocence

  1469. but I'm

  1470. here to

  1471. tell you

  1472. there's a

  1473. far more

  1474. profound

  1475. innocence

  1476. of Jesus

  1477. you must

  1478. know about

  1479. it

  1480. he's not

  1481. just

  1482. innocent

  1483. of the

  1484. charge

  1485. of treason

  1486. against

  1487. Rome

  1488. he is

  1489. innocent

  1490. of any

  1491. charge

  1492. of any

  1493. sin

  1494. against

  1495. God

  1496. he

  1497. lived

  1498. a life

  1499. none

  1500. of us

  1501. ever

  1502. could

  1503. he pleased

  1504. God

  1505. every

  1506. moment

  1507. of

  1508. every

  1509. day

  1510. his

  1511. innocence

  1512. is an

  1513. innocence

  1514. before

  1515. Rome

  1516. but it's

  1517. an

  1518. innocence

  1519. before

  1520. God

  1521. he did

  1522. what none

  1523. of us

  1524. could do

  1525. further

  1526. emphasis

  1527. is on

  1528. Jesus

  1529. silence

  1530. he's

  1531. purposely

  1532. silent

  1533. remember

  1534. in the

  1535. garden

  1536. when he

  1537. was

  1538. arrested

  1539. Peter

  1540. slices

  1541. Malchus

  1542. his ear

  1543. off

  1544. Jesus

  1545. heals

  1546. his ear

  1547. and he

  1548. says

  1549. to

  1550. Peter

  1551. Peter

  1552. I

  1553. could

  1554. call

  1555. down

  1556. 12

  1557. legions

  1558. of

  1559. angels

  1560. if I

  1561. wanted

  1562. to

  1563. and the

  1564. point

  1565. is

  1566. he

  1567. didn't

  1568. want

  1569. to

  1570. he

  1571. was

  1572. doing

  1573. the

  1574. will

  1575. of

  1576. his

  1577. father

  1578. and he

  1579. had

  1580. to be

  1581. arrested

  1582. my

  1583. point

  1584. here

  1585. Jesus

  1586. is

  1587. willingly

  1588. going

  1589. to be

  1590. rejected

  1591. he's

  1592. purposefully

  1593. not

  1594. saying

  1595. anything

  1596. he's

  1597. fulfilling

  1598. Isaiah

  1599. 53

  1600. 7

  1601. in order

  1602. to go

  1603. to his

  1604. death

  1605. he's

  1606. giving

  1607. himself

  1608. he's

  1609. about

  1610. the

  1611. father's

  1612. will

  1613. he's

  1614. the

  1615. innocent

  1616. one

  1617. willingly

  1618. going

  1619. to

  1620. his

  1621. death

  1622. last

  1623. emphasis

  1624. I want

  1625. to draw

  1626. your

  1627. attention

  1628. to

  1629. is

  1630. Jesus

  1631. the

  1632. Jewish

  1633. Messiah

  1634. is

  1635. rejected

  1636. by the

  1637. Jews

  1638. living

  1639. in

  1640. Jerusalem

  1641. at

  1642. that

  1643. time

  1644. they

  1645. choose

  1646. a

  1647. murderous

  1648. insurrectionist

  1649. over

  1650. the

  1651. loving

  1652. Messiah

  1653. who

  1654. is

  1655. innocent

  1656. the

  1657. Jewish

  1658. crowd

  1659. has

  1660. given

  1661. a

  1662. choice

  1663. and

  1664. they

  1665. decide

  1666. and so

  1667. humanly

  1668. speaking

  1669. the

  1670. crowd

  1671. persuaded

  1672. Pilate

  1673. to have

  1674. Jesus

  1675. crucified

  1676. but if

  1677. you

  1678. would

  1679. flip

  1680. over

  1681. to

  1682. your

  1683. Bibles

  1684. in

  1685. your

  1686. Bibles

  1687. to

  1688. Acts

    Acts 2:23

  1689. chapter

  1690. 2

  1691. verse

  1692. 23

  1693. Peter

  1694. preaching

  1695. on

  1696. Pentecost

  1697. to

  1698. Jews

  1699. says

  1700. to

  1701. them

  1702. this

  1703. Jesus

  1704. delivered

  1705. up

  1706. according

  1707. to

  1708. the

  1709. definite

  1710. plan

  1711. and

  1712. foreknowledge

  1713. of

  1714. God

  1715. it

  1716. was

  1717. all

  1718. God's

  1719. plan

  1720. it's

  1721. all

  1722. God's

  1723. plan

  1724. you

  1725. crucified

  1726. and

  1727. killed

  1728. by the

  1729. hands

  1730. of

  1731. lawless

  1732. men

  1733. they

  1734. were

  1735. responsible

  1736. but

  1737. God

  1738. is

  1739. reigning

  1740. and

  1741. in

  1742. control

  1743. this

  1744. is

  1745. carrying

  1746. out

  1747. his

  1748. purpose

  1749. so

  1750. here's

  1751. the

  1752. point

  1753. of

  1754. all

  1755. this

  1756. here's

  1757. why

  1758. this

  1759. is

  1760. here

  1761. the

  1762. Jews

  1763. rejection

  1764. of

  1765. the

  1766. Jewish

  1767. Messiah

  1768. resulted

  1769. in

  1770. the

  1771. rescue

  1772. of

  1773. countless

  1774. Gentiles

  1775. the

  1776. Jewish

  1777. nations

  1778. rejection

  1779. of

  1780. their

  1781. king

  1782. opened

  1783. up

  1784. this

  1785. Jewish

  1786. king

  1787. to

  1788. make

  1789. a

  1790. whole

  1791. new

  1792. people

  1793. a

  1794. whole

  1795. new

  1796. nation

  1797. for

  1798. himself

  1799. comprised

  1800. of

  1801. people

  1802. men

  1803. and

  1804. women

  1805. boys

  1806. and

  1807. girls

  1808. from

  1809. every

  1810. tribe

  1811. tongue

  1812. and

  1813. nation

  1814. around

  1815. the

  1816. world

  1817. God

  1818. ordained

  1819. the

  1820. Jewish

  1821. Messiah

  1822. to be

  1823. rejected

  1824. by the

  1825. Jewish

  1826. people

  1827. people

  1828. in

  1829. order

  1830. for

  1831. Gentiles

  1832. to be

  1833. brought

  1834. into

  1835. his

  1836. new

  1837. people

  1838. it's

  1839. amazing

  1840. so

  1841. here's

  1842. let me

  1843. leave you

  1844. with

  1845. this

  1846. there

  1847. might be

  1848. some

  1849. people

  1850. with

  1851. Jewish

  1852. ancestry

  1853. in

  1854. this

  1855. room

  1856. but

  1857. the

  1858. majority

  1859. of

  1860. us

  1861. are

  1862. Gentiles

  1863. how

  1864. do

  1865. a

  1866. bunch

  1867. of

  1868. Gentiles

  1869. living

  1870. nearly

  1871. 2,000

  1872. years

  1873. after

  1874. Jesus

  1875. was

  1876. rejected

  1877. by

  1878. Jews

  1879. in

  1880. Jerusalem

  1881. how

  1882. do

  1883. we

  1884. respond

  1885. to

  1886. this

  1887. well

  1888. the

  1889. first

  1890. is

  1891. this

  1892. choose

  1893. your

  1894. king

  1895. choose

  1896. your

  1897. king

  1898. who

  1899. are you

  1900. going to

  1901. live

  1902. for

  1903. you

  1904. either

  1905. reject

  1906. Jesus

  1907. and you

  1908. deny

  1909. him

  1910. or

  1911. you

  1912. receive

  1913. Jesus

  1914. in order

  1915. to receive

  1916. him

  1917. as

  1918. your

  1919. king

  1920. you

  1921. got

  1922. to

  1923. deny

  1924. yourself

  1925. and

  1926. follow

  1927. after

  1928. him

  1929. so

  1930. the

  1931. first

  1932. response

  1933. is

  1934. choose

  1935. your

  1936. king

  1937. and

  1938. don't

  1939. reject

  1940. him

  1941. please

  1942. the

  1943. second

  1944. is

  1945. this

  1946. for

  1947. those

  1948. of

  1949. us

  1950. who

  1951. have

  1952. chosen

  1953. Jesus

  1954. as

  1955. our

  1956. king

  1957. this

  1958. should

  1959. sober

  1960. us

  1961. to

  1962. see

  1963. what

  1964. he

  1965. did

  1966. in

  1967. order

  1968. to

  1969. rescue

  1970. us

  1971. it

  1972. should

  1973. humble

  1974. us

  1975. Romans

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  1976. chapter

  1977. 11

  1978. if

  1979. you

  1980. haven't

  1981. read

  1982. that

  1983. read

  1984. it

  1985. it

  1986. helped

  1987. Paul

  1988. talks

  1989. about

  1990. why

  1991. God

  1992. would

  1993. harden

  1994. some

  1995. of

  1996. these

  1997. Jews

  1998. in order

  1999. to

  2000. allow

  2001. Gentiles

  2002. to come

  2003. into

  2004. his

  2005. kingdom

  2006. one of the

  2007. effects

  2008. is to

  2009. humble

  2010. us

  2011. we don't

  2012. deserve

  2013. any

  2014. of this

  2015. and the

  2016. third

  2017. way

  2018. for those

  2019. of us

  2020. who've

  2021. chosen

  2022. Jesus

  2023. is to

  2024. rejoice

  2025. his

  2026. rejection

  2027. resulted

  2028. in our

  2029. salvation

  2030. he shed

  2031. his

  2032. blood

  2033. and his

  2034. blood

  2035. is not

  2036. on our

  2037. heads

  2038. his

  2039. blood

  2040. forgives

  2041. us

  2042. this is

  2043. all

  2044. God's

  2045. plan

  2046. his

  2047. rejection

  2048. resulted

  2049. in our

  2050. rescue

  2051. and now

  2052. what we

  2053. say

  2054. is not

  2055. crucify

  2056. him

  2057. we say

  2058. things like

  2059. oh worship

  2060. him

  2061. live for

  2062. him

  2063. bow down

  2064. to him

  2065. today

  2066. we've

  2067. seen a

  2068. rejection

  2069. of

  2070. Jesus

  2071. by his

  2072. people

  2073. next

  2074. Sunday

  2075. next

  2076. Sunday

  2077. is a

  2078. rejection

  2079. that

  2080. Jesus

  2081. has been

  2082. dreading

  2083. let's

  2084. pray

  2085. oh God

  2086. in heaven

  2087. we do

  2088. thank you

  2089. so much

  2090. for your

  2091. word

  2092. God

  2093. would you

  2094. do your

  2095. work

  2096. in our

  2097. hearts

  2098. through your

  2099. word

  2100. as

  2101. Gentiles

  2102. living

  2103. 2000 years

  2104. after these

  2105. events

  2106. we are

  2107. sobered

  2108. but we

  2109. are

  2110. grateful

  2111. God

  2112. we

  2113. would

  2114. ask

  2115. that you

  2116. would

  2117. save

  2118. save

  2119. many

  2120. many

  2121. Jews

  2122. save

  2123. many

  2124. Gentiles

  2125. bring

  2126. them

  2127. into

  2128. your

  2129. kingdom

  2130. through

  2131. the

  2132. blood

  2133. of

  2134. Jesus

  2135. amen
