  1. And if you would open up your Bible to Matthew chapter 27,

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  2. we're going to be looking at the crucifixion account of Jesus and what preceded it.

  3. Kind of alluded this to in my prayer, but

  4. maybe some of you came in this morning and you, when it comes to salvation,

  5. when it comes to Christ crucified, your thoughts are kind of like,

  6. yeah, that happened, I'm so happy for it.

  7. But really, it doesn't make that much of a difference in your life.

  8. May God stir your heart this morning through His Word.

  9. Maybe some of you are in here this morning and you are,

  10. you've been trying to fight pride in your life.

  11. You've been trying to live for others, or maybe you know you should be.

  12. But really, it's been a hard, hard thing to die in you, this desire to live for yourself.

  13. Well, this morning, we're going to see Jesus give Himself up.

  14. And it is such an example of humility.

  15. We're also going to see is what the Apostle Paul calls the matter of first importance.

  16. That which makes a difference.

  17. That which prioritizes, is in pole position in the life of a church.

  18. This is first things.

  19. That Christ was crucified.

  20. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

  21. And the main thing, when it comes to biblical Christianity,

  22. can be summed up in two words.

  23. Christ crucified.

  24. And so this morning, I'm going to read Matthew chapter 27.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  25. And we're going to start in verse 27.

  26. And I'm going to read through verse 61.

  27. And then we're going to walk through it.

  28. There are six scenes here.

  29. And we're going to walk through each scene.

  30. And I'm going to make a point and then bring it to bear.

  31. But let's just read God's Word together.

  32. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's headquarters,

  33. known as the Praetorium.

  34. And they gathered the whole battalion before Him.

  35. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

  36. And twisting together a crown of thorns,

  37. they put it on His head and put a reed in His right hand.

  38. And kneeling before Him, they mocked Him, saying,

  39. Hail, King of the Jews!

  40. And they spit on Him and took the reed and struck Him on the head.

  41. And when they had mocked Him,

  42. they stripped Him of the robe and put His own clothes on Him

  43. and led Him away to crucify Him.

  44. As they went out, they found a man of serene, Simon by name.

  45. They compelled this man to carry His cross.

  46. And when they came to a place called Golgotha,

  47. which means place of a skull,

  48. they offered Him wine to drink mixed with gall.

  49. But when He tasted it, He would not drink it.

  50. And when they had crucified Him,

  51. they divided His garments among them by casting lots.

  52. Then they sat down and kept watch over Him there.

  53. And over His head they put the charge against Him,

  54. which read,

  55. This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.

  56. Then two robbers were crucified with Him,

  57. one on the right and one on the left.

  58. And those who passed by derided Him,

  59. wagging their heads and saying,

  60. You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

  61. Save yourself!

  62. If you are the Son of God,

  63. come down from the cross.

  64. So also the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked Him,

  65. saying,

  66. He saved others.

  67. He cannot save Himself.

  68. He's the King of Israel.

  69. Let Him come down now from the cross,

  70. and we will believe in Him.

  71. He trusts in God.

  72. Let God deliver Him now,

  73. if He desires Him.

  74. For He said,

  75. I'm the Son of God.

  76. And the robbers who were crucified with Him

  77. also reviled Him in the same way.

  78. Verse 45.

  79. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness

  80. over all the land until the ninth hour.

  81. And about the ninth hour,

  82. Jesus cried out with a loud voice,

  83. saying,

  84. Eli, Eli,

  85. Leme Sabachthani.

  86. That is,

  87. My God, my God,

  88. why have you forsaken me?

  89. And some of the bystanders hearing it said,

  90. This man is calling Elijah.

  91. Elijah.

  92. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge,

  93. filled it with sour wine,

  94. and put it on a reed,

  95. and gave it to him to drink.

  96. But the other said,

  97. Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.

  98. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice,

  99. and yielded up His spirit.

  100. And behold,

  101. the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

  102. And the earth shook,

  103. and the rocks were split,

  104. the tombs also were opened,

  105. and many bodies of the saints

  106. who had fallen asleep were raised,

  107. and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection.

  108. They went into the holy city and appeared to many.

  109. When the centurion and those who were with Him,

  110. keeping watch over Jesus,

  111. saw the earthquake,

  112. and what took place,

  113. they were filled with awe,

  114. and said,

  115. Truly,

  116. this was the Son of God.

  117. There were also many women there,

  118. looking from a distance,

  119. who had followed Jesus from Galilee,

  120. ministering to Him,

  121. among whom were Mary Magdalene,

  122. and Mary the mother of James and Joseph,

  123. and this mother of the sons of Zebedee.

  124. When it was evening,

  125. there came a rich man from Arimathea,

  126. named Joseph,

  127. who also was a disciple of Jesus.

  128. And he went to Pilate,

  129. and asked for the body of Jesus.

  130. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him.

  131. And Joseph took the body,

  132. wrapped it in a clean linen shroud,

  133. and laid it in his own new tomb,

  134. which he had cut in the rock.

  135. And he rolled a great stone

  136. to the entrance of the tomb,

  137. and went away.

  138. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there,

  139. sitting opposite the tomb.

  140. The main thing is to keep the main thing,

  141. the main thing.

  142. And here before us,

  143. is the main thing.

  144. Christ crucified.

  145. So let's walk through these six scenes,

  146. and let us see what God would have for us this morning.

  147. Let's look at verses 27-31.

  148. Jesus is mocked in the praetorium.

  149. I'm not sure if you noticed this

  150. when we read through it just moments ago,

  151. but the way in which

  152. these Roman soldiers were mocking Jesus.

  153. Do you remember last week,

  154. we talked about Jesus was before Pilate.

  155. He was up on the charge of treason.

  156. He's claiming to be a king.

  157. Pilate tries to get him off.

  158. He doesn't think he's guilty,

  159. but the Jewish crowds are yelling,

  160. crucify him, crucify him.

  161. And Pilate washes his hands and says,

  162. hey, this is your responsibility.

  163. They say, his blood is on our heads.

  164. And so Pilate gives in,

  165. hands him over to the Roman soldiers.

  166. They bring him,

  167. they scourge him,

  168. which is a brutal whipping.

  169. And then in verse 27,

  170. these soldiers,

  171. they bring him into the praetorium

  172. before the battalion,

  173. which would have been about 600 soldiers,

  174. a cohort.

  175. They stripped him,

  176. and they put a scarlet robe on him.

  177. A scarlet robe would have been

  178. akin to the royal robe of a king.

  179. It was mockery.

  180. It would have been one of the short,

  181. scarlet capes of one of the Roman troopers.

  182. It would have been obvious

  183. that they're making fun of him.

  184. But they don't stop there.

  185. They put a crown of thorns together

  186. on his head.

  187. It was to imitate the laurel crown,

  188. the laurel wreath that went around Caesar.

  189. Caesar,

  190. you're the king.

  191. Here's your crown.

  192. And they pressed it on his head.

  193. Verse 29.

  194. But it didn't stop there.

  195. They put a scepter in his hand.

  196. It was a reed.

  197. You know what cattails are?

  198. We see cattails in swamps.

  199. That's akin to what we're talking about.

  200. It was complete mockery.

  201. And then they kneeled down.

  202. Job 29 and

  203. paid a mock homage.

  204. Hail, king of the Jews.

  205. It would,

  206. a ring of hail Caesar.

  207. So these Roman soldiers,

  208. they couldn't resist the opportunity

  209. of this guy who's claiming to be a king.

  210. Now they have the opportunity

  211. to get him ready for crucifixion.

  212. And they're brutal.

  213. Their mocking is awful.

  214. They spit on him.

  215. And they start beating his head

  216. with that reed,

  217. with his crown of thorns on him.

  218. All the while,

  219. we know what's going on.

  220. For those of us

  221. who've been studying Matthew together,

  222. we know that Jesus,

  223. he was born of a virgin,

  224. conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  225. His other name is Emmanuel,

  226. God with us.

  227. We know who these soldiers

  228. are mocking.

  229. They have no idea.

  230. We know that he's a descendant of David.

  231. That he's in fact

  232. David's greater son,

  233. Psalm 110.

  234. That he is the true king of Israel.

  235. We know that.

  236. They don't.

  237. And so they mock the one

  238. who truly is the king.

  239. What is striking here

  240. is how Jesus responds.

  241. He doesn't.

  242. He's silent.

  243. He's letting it happen.

  244. He's not doing anything to stop it.

  245. These Roman soldiers

  246. don't see him for who he is.

  247. And we,

  248. almost 2,000 years later,

  249. we do.

  250. But this mockery

  251. by these Roman soldiers,

  252. this wasn't the worst thing

  253. that happened

  254. on this Friday.

  255. This is before 9 a.m.

  256. The trial itself

  257. before Pilate

  258. would have been at daybreak.

  259. Mark tells us

  260. that Jesus was actually

  261. crucified at 9 a.m.

  262. So this has happened somewhere

  263. maybe 8 a.m.

  264. that Friday morning.

  265. So they get the deed done.

  266. They mock him

  267. behind praetorian closed doors.

  268. And then they redress him

  269. and then they bring him out

  270. in order to crucify him.

  271. And that moves us

  272. to our next scene

  273. in verses 32 through 38.

  274. They bring him to Golgotha.

  275. Verse 32,

  276. as they went out,

  277. they found a man of Cyrene

  278. named Simon.

  279. Now,

  280. they compelled this man

  281. to carry his cross.

  282. What's going on here?

  283. Why would they do that?

  284. What's happening?

  285. Why would they take

  286. this guy named Simon

  287. and force him

  288. to carry Jesus' cross?

  289. It wouldn't have been

  290. the whole cross.

  291. It would have been

  292. the cross member.

  293. The pentibulum

  294. is what it was called.

  295. And it weighed somewhere

  296. between 75 and 100 pounds.

  297. And so if Jesus,

  298. who had been scourged,

  299. had already lost

  300. a huge amount of blood,

  301. he is struggling.

  302. His body is failing him.

  303. And so they're going

  304. to bring him out

  305. of the city

  306. of Jerusalem proper.

  307. And they're going

  308. to crucify him outside.

  309. And so he's having

  310. to carry this cross.

  311. His body fails him.

  312. And so the Roman guards,

  313. which would have been

  314. four of them,

  315. they're not going

  316. to carry his cross.

  317. And so they're within

  318. their legal bounds

  319. to say,

  320. you take up his cross

  321. to Simon of Cyrene.

  322. And he does.

  323. He's got no other option.

  324. But as soon as you hear

  325. that name Simon,

  326. what should be going

  327. through your head?

  328. Where's the rock?

  329. And it reminds us

  330. that Jesus has been

  331. abandoned by his own.

  332. Verse 33,

  333. they come to this place

  334. called Golgotha,

  335. the place of a skull.

  336. It had a reputation

  337. for death.

  338. And just as a side note,

  339. when we use the word

  340. Calvary,

  341. Calvary comes from

  342. a Latin word,

  343. Calva,

  344. which means skull.

  345. And so when we talk

  346. about Calva,

  347. we're talking about

  348. Golgotha,

  349. the place of a skull,

  350. the place known

  351. for death.

  352. In verse 34,

  353. the soldiers offer

  354. Jesus wine mixed

  355. with gall.

  356. Now you see that

  357. in your Bible

  358. and you're kind of like,

  359. well that was really nice

  360. of them.

  361. What changed?

  362. They're just being

  363. to be sweet.

  364. It wasn't.

  365. Has anybody in the room

  366. innocently

  367. kind of grabbed

  368. a glass of water

  369. and you start drinking it

  370. and then you realize

  371. someone spiked it

  372. with salt?

  373. Has anybody

  374. experienced that before?

  375. You put it to your lips

  376. and you're like,

  377. ah!

  378. And then you hear

  379. the chuckles, right?

  380. That's what's happening.

  381. The soldiers spiked

  382. this wine with gall.

  383. It was very distasteful.

  384. As soon as Jesus

  385. puts it on his lips,

  386. it's gross.

  387. He's not going to drink it.

  388. Then the Roman soldiers

  389. are like,

  390. gotcha!

  391. It's more of the same.

  392. More mockery.

  393. Verse 35,

  394. this is striking.

  395. It's so understated.

  396. And when they had

  397. crucified him,

  398. they divided his garments

  399. among them

  400. by casting lots.

  401. Matthew's just

  402. matter of fact.

  403. It doesn't go into

  404. big detail.

  405. And the reason why

  406. is if you're living

  407. in the first century

  408. and you were the

  409. recipients of this

  410. gospel originally,

  411. you would be very

  412. familiar with

  413. crucifixion.

  414. It was estimated

  415. that Rome would

  416. crucify upwards

  417. to 10,000 people

  418. every year.

  419. And so you would

  420. have been used

  421. to seeing crucifixions

  422. even though they're

  423. horrific.

  424. They're an awful

  425. way to die.

  426. Crucifixion was

  427. reserved for the

  428. worst of criminals

  429. and the lowest

  430. of society.

  431. It was designed

  432. to inflict the

  433. maximum amount

  434. of pain

  435. for the longest

  436. amount of time

  437. in the most

  438. humiliating of ways.

  439. And just to give

  440. you a sample of it,

  441. we have an English

  442. word, it's called

  443. excruciate.

  444. Have you heard

  445. that word before?

  446. It's one of our

  447. words to try to get

  448. at the worst kind

  449. of pain we experience.

  450. And literally,

  451. what excruciate means,

  452. it means out of

  453. the cross.

  454. X out of cru,

  455. C-R-U-C,

  456. that's short for

  457. crux, cross,

  458. out of the cross.

  459. Our English word

  460. for worst possible

  461. pain has its root

  462. in the cross.

  463. And he was

  464. crucified naked.

  465. That was the Roman

  466. way of doing things.

  467. Probably would have

  468. had a loincloth on

  469. to be respectful

  470. to the Jews,

  471. but it would have

  472. been humiliating.

  473. That's why they

  474. were dividing

  475. his garments up

  476. among them

  477. and casting lots

  478. for them.

  479. It actually fulfills

  480. Psalm 22, 18.

  481. And what you're

  482. going to see is

  483. Psalm 22 is

  484. backlaid against

  485. this.

  486. Matthew helps us

  487. see that this is

  488. fulfillment all over

  489. the place.

  490. One other thing

  491. you need to know

  492. is that Jews

  493. considered someone

  494. who was crucified

  495. as being cursed

  496. by God.

  497. Paul says,

  498. quoting Deuteronomy,

  499. cursed is everyone

  500. who is hanged on a

  501. tree.

  502. And what you need

  503. to know is that

  504. Jesus is coming

  505. under the curse

  506. of God at these

  507. moments.

  508. But the question

  509. we need to start

  510. asking is,

  511. I thought Jesus

  512. was innocent.

  513. Why is he being

  514. accursed by God?

  515. For who is he

  516. being accursed?

  517. Verse 36,

  518. the guards sit

  519. down and keep

  520. watch over Jesus.

  521. They're protecting

  522. him.

  523. There's the possibility

  524. someone would try

  525. to steal someone

  526. off a cross.

  527. But Matthew's

  528. really set this up

  529. because these

  530. Roman guards,

  531. there's four of them

  532. with a centurion,

  533. they are watching

  534. what is about

  535. to happen.

  536. And we know

  537. what they're about

  538. to see.

  539. They have no idea

  540. what they're about

  541. to see.

  542. And what they are

  543. about to witness

  544. is going to change

  545. them.

  546. They're going to be

  547. those who say,

  548. hail, king of the

  549. Jews, mockingly,

  550. to one saying,

  551. truly, this was

  552. the son of God.

  553. They're going to see

  554. something.

  555. But they don't know

  556. what's happening yet.

  557. verse 37, we learn

  558. about what was

  559. tacked above Jesus'

  560. head.

  561. Criminals would

  562. have had this sign

  563. put above them

  564. that would say

  565. who they are.

  566. This is Jesus of

  567. Nazareth and what

  568. they're charged with.

  569. He's charged with

  570. being king of the

  571. Jews, tongue in

  572. cheek.

  573. It was mocking

  574. Jesus and thumbing

  575. their noses at the

  576. Jews.

  577. Here's your king.

  578. And what we see

  579. going on here is

  580. very subtle, but

  581. very important to

  582. see.

  583. Though they think

  584. that it's mockery,

  585. we know it to be

  586. true.

  587. This is Jesus.

  588. Do you remember

  589. what his name

  590. means?

  591. The Lord saves,

  592. Matthew 1.21.

  593. And it's, he's the

  594. king of the Jews.

  595. It's true.

  596. And he's hanging

  597. on a cross.

  598. To Jews, this would

  599. have been a

  600. stumbling block.

  601. To Greeks, it would

  602. have been just a

  603. fool's errand.

  604. But this is the

  605. second time now we've

  606. seen king of the

  607. Jews show up in our

  608. section.

  609. The first one was a

  610. mocking hail king of

  611. the Jews, but it's

  612. true.

  613. And now it's, it's

  614. written on the sign

  615. above Jesus' head on

  616. the cross.

  617. It's true.

  618. verse 38, there's

  619. two robbers crucified,

  620. one on the other,

  621. each side of him, and

  622. they're called robbers,

  623. but there's, there is

  624. a reasonable belief to

  625. believe that these were

  626. more than robbers, that

  627. these were actually other

  628. freedom fighters, other

  629. insurrectionists.

  630. And the idea behind it is

  631. Barabbas was their leader.

  632. And he would have been

  633. crucified in the middle of

  634. them.

  635. And so what's happened is,

  636. if that's true, Jesus

  637. gotten swapped out for

  638. their insurrectionist

  639. leader.

  640. But what we see come the

  641. end of verse 38 is the

  642. stage has now been set.

  643. Jesus is hanging on a

  644. cross with these

  645. insurrectionists on

  646. either side.

  647. There's the Roman guard

  648. watching him.

  649. And now we move to the

  650. third scene.

  651. The passerbys, the

  652. leaders, the criminals,

  653. themselves.

  654. And what Matthew does, he

  655. moves us from this

  656. activity of these Roman

  657. soldiers now to the

  658. reviling of the Jews.

  659. In verses 39, we read

  660. this.

  661. And those who passed by

  662. derided him, wagging

  663. their heads.

  664. These were, these were

  665. Jewish passerbys,

  666. sojourners coming into

  667. the city.

  668. This is just everyday

  669. activity that they've been

  670. doing.

  671. They're wagging their

  672. heads is a fulfillment of

  673. Psalm 22, 7, where we

  674. read, all who see me,

  675. mock me.

  676. They make mouths at me.

  677. They wag their heads.

  678. And so these are ordinary

  679. Jews walking by.

  680. Jesus would have been

  681. crucified in a place that

  682. was very prominent and

  683. public.

  684. And so people just coming

  685. in and out of the city,

  686. they'd have to see it.

  687. It was Rome's way of

  688. saying, don't mess with

  689. us.

  690. And these passerbys are

  691. saying in verse 40, you

  692. who would destroy the

  693. temple and rebuild it in

  694. three days, save yourself.

  695. This is what was accused

  696. of Jesus and the hearing

  697. in Caiaphas' house in

  698. chapter 26, 61.

  699. And they're referring to

  700. something Jesus said back

  701. in John chapter 2, 19,

    John 2 chapter mention

  702. records for us, where Jesus

  703. wasn't actually speaking

  704. about the temple proper in

  705. Jerusalem.

  706. He was talking about his

  707. own body.

  708. He was saying, hey, destroy

  709. this body of mine and in

  710. three days later it will be

  711. raised.

  712. And the great irony of

  713. this all is that he is

  714. going to give himself in

  715. order to save others.

  716. And then they go on to

  717. say in verse 40, if you are

  718. the Son of God, come down

  719. from the cross.

  720. These passerbys, these

  721. Jewish passerbys, they

  722. obviously don't understand

  723. why the Son of God had

  724. come.

  725. They're thinking, hey, if

  726. you come down from the

  727. cross, that will prove

  728. you're the Son of God.

  729. But we all know that it's

  730. because he stayed on the

  731. cross, it proved he was the

  732. Son of God.

  733. And that's exactly what

  734. you're going to see the

  735. centurion say.

  736. He's going to witness

  737. everything in verse 54.

  738. He's going to say, truly,

  739. this was the Son of God.

  740. He saw the way he died.

  741. He stayed on the cross.

  742. He'll be in his very dying

  743. that his identity is

  744. confirmed to those who

  745. believe.

  746. Well, these Jewish

  747. passerbys persist in their

  748. blindness.

  749. righteousness.

  750. And Jesus has no

  751. response.

  752. He doesn't say anything

  753. from the cross to them.

  754. And then in verse 41, we

  755. start seeing the Jewish

  756. leaders get in on the

  757. play.

  758. And it's very subtle.

  759. There's a very subtle

  760. shift here.

  761. If you look in verse 40,

  762. you see the passerby saying,

  763. you who would destroy the

  764. temple.

  765. You save yourself.

  766. You, you, you, you, you.

  767. You.

  768. They're speaking to him on

  769. the cross.

  770. And then in verse 41, the

  771. chief priests, scribes,

  772. elders mock him saying, he

  773. saved others.

  774. He cannot save himself.

  775. They're not even giving him

  776. the dignity of speaking to

  777. him.

  778. It's like their backs are

  779. turned talking to one

  780. another.

  781. He, he, he can't even save

  782. himself.

  783. He saved others, but he

  784. can't save.

  785. They're not talking to him.

  786. It's like when someone

  787. talks about you in your

  788. presence, but they're not

  789. talking to you.

  790. They're just humiliating him.

  791. He saved others.

  792. He cannot save himself.

  793. The irony, of course, is

  794. that he's giving himself to

  795. save others.

  796. He's the king of Israel.

  797. Let him come down now from

  798. the cross and we will

  799. believe him.

  800. Even if he did come down,

  801. they would not believe him

  802. because their heart are so

  803. hard towards him.

  804. They're thinking that, hey,

  805. we will acknowledge the

  806. reign of this king if he

  807. comes down.

  808. And the reality is he's

  809. establishing his reign by

  810. staying up.

  811. There's that phrase again,

  812. king of Israel.

  813. In verse 43, these Jewish

  814. leaders quoting Psalm 22,

  815. 8, he trusts in God.

  816. Let God deliver him now if

  817. he desires him.

  818. For he said, I'm the son of

  819. God.

  820. Oh, Jesus, if he has that

  821. special relationship with

  822. God, if he is really God's

  823. son and he trusts God,

  824. then God should deliver him

  825. if he desires that.

  826. He will want him to be

  827. delivered.

  828. Again, these Jewish leaders

  829. are thinking, hey, if he is

  830. who he claimed to be, then

  831. God's going to bring him

  832. down.

  833. He's going to rescue him

  834. from the cross.

  835. But they don't seem to

  836. remember Isaiah 53, 10,

  837. which says it was the will

  838. of the Lord to crush him.

  839. Jesus does trust in his

  840. father.

  841. And God's not going to

  842. deliver him.

  843. He's going to crush him.

  844. He's going to crush him.

  845. They don't see it.

  846. They reject Jesus as their

  847. Messiah.

  848. Son of God, King of Israel,

  849. taken together equals Messiah.

  850. They reject him.

  851. And Jesus doesn't respond.

  852. Verse 44, the Jewish criminals

  853. on either side of him, they

  854. get in on the game.

  855. They revile him the same way

  856. Luke tells us, are you not

  857. the Christ?

  858. Save yourself and us.

  859. Us too.

  860. We know later that one of them

  861. will actually have a dramatic

  862. change of heart and he will,

  863. to that day on the cross,

  864. will be the day of salvation

  865. for him.

  866. But Matthew records for us

  867. here, it's all the Jews

  868. in this area are heaping up

  869. reviles on him.

  870. It is like a chorus of

  871. revilings of these Jewish

  872. spectators.

  873. The passerbys, the leadership,

  874. the criminals on either side,

  875. they've rejected Jesus as the

  876. King, the Son of God, and they

  877. revile him.

  878. Remember, Jesus, this is not

  879. about power.

  880. Jesus had the authority.

  881. He healed sick people of their

  882. sicknesses with just a touch.

  883. He just spoke words to raging

  884. seas and they were peaceful.

  885. He spoke a word of exorcism to

  886. legions of demons and they left

  887. their victim.

  888. And he raised people from the

  889. dead.

  890. This is not an issue of ability.

  891. It's not that Jesus cannot save

  892. himself.

  893. Jesus will not save himself.

  894. He's choosing not to save himself.

  895. He's choosing to give himself.

  896. And these Jews around him right now,

  897. they don't get it.

  898. They don't see it.

  899. But for all this Jewish reviling,

  900. it's not the worst of it.

  901. This isn't the worst of it.

  902. It's what happens in 45 through 50

  903. that's the worst of it.

  904. And now we move to scene four.

  905. His cry of dereliction and his

  906. death.

  907. In verse 45, we see darkness

  908. coming over the land.

  909. It's the sixth hour.

  910. That means noon to the Roman mind.

  911. So it's noon and there was

  912. darkness all over the land.

  913. It would have been very odd.

  914. Do you remember, do you all

  915. remember the solar eclipse this

  916. past summer?

  917. It was high day.

  918. If you're in Missouri, you'd be

  919. like, this is weird and freaky,

  920. but kind of awesome.

  921. Some have speculated that what's

  922. happening here on this Friday

  923. is a solar eclipse, but the reality

  924. is it would have been Passover,

  925. it would have been full moon,

  926. and apparently you can't have a full

  927. moon and a solar eclipse at the same

  928. time.

  929. So it's not a solar eclipse.

  930. Something else is going on.

  931. What is this darkness for me?

  932. Jesus has been on the cross for three

  933. hours, 9 a.m.

  934. It's noon.

  935. Darkness is coming over the land.

  936. Back in Exodus, before God, the

  937. tenth plague in which God pours out

  938. death on the firstborn and he

  939. provides a Passover lamb.

  940. And before that, the ninth plague,

  941. darkness.

  942. Three days of darkness.

  943. It starts getting at this sense of

  944. judgment.

  945. God's wrath building up.

  946. Throughout the Old Testament, there's

  947. a linkage between darkness and

  948. judgment.

  949. Now, if it's true that this gathering

  950. darkness is a manifestation of God's

  951. judgment, we've got to start asking a

  952. question.

  953. What is God's wrath being aimed at here?

  954. Why is God's wrath being gathered

  955. visibly?

  956. What is happening?

  957. We have the Son of God on the cross,

  958. and we have darkness gathering in this

  959. area, in this land.

  960. Who is this judgment aimed at?

  961. Verse 46.

  962. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  963. The judgment isn't on the Roman soldiers.

  964. The judgment isn't on these reviling

  965. Jews.

  966. This gathering judgment is falling upon

  967. the Son of God on the cross.

  968. His wrath being poured out on Jesus.

  969. In verse 46, we're told that it's the

  970. ninth hour Jesus cried.

  971. 3 p.m.

  972. Friday afternoon.

  973. He's been on the cross for six hours.

  974. This darkness has been there for three

  975. hours.

  976. This judgment being poured out on Jesus

  977. for three hours.

  978. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  979. This is the worst part of it.

  980. This is what Jesus has been dreading in

  981. the garden.

  982. This is the cup that he was going to be

  983. drinking that he didn't really want to

  984. drink but was willing to drink out of

  985. obedience to his Father.

  986. He's quoting Psalm 22.1.

  987. Psalm 22 is about an innocent man who

  988. suffers greatly.

  989. It's that basic and simple and that is

  990. exactly what's going on here.

  991. Jesus is experiencing God forsakenness.

  992. It's the cry of dereliction, of cry of

  993. abandonment.

  994. He's drinking the cup.

  995. And we've got to ask, well, in what sense

  996. is Jesus being forsaken here?

  997. And there's a couple clues in the actual

  998. quote.

  999. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

1000. The relationship is still intact.

1001. The second person of the Trinity has not

1002. ceased to be the son of the first person

1003. of the Trinity, the Father.

1004. But in some way, in ways that we can't

1005. fathom, there is now a hostility between

  1006. Father and Son.

  1007. There's something there that's never been

1008. there before for all eternity past.

1009. And we get a flavor of it.

1010. In Matthew chapter 3, after Jesus is

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

1011. baptized, we hear the Father's voice.

1012. This is my beloved Son with whom I am

  1013. well pleased.

1014. And then in Matthew chapter 17, after the

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

1015. transfiguration, this is my beloved Son

  1016. who I'm well pleased.

  1017. Listen to Him.

1018. And here on the defining moment of

1019. salvation, what do we hear from the

  1020. Father?

  1021. Nothing!

1022. We just hear the Son.

1023. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

1024. Why would He forsake His Son if His Son is

  1025. innocent?

1026. Why would He do this?

1027. It's all according to plan.

1028. From before the foundation of the world,

1029. God ordained His Son to be sacrificed for

1030. those who would one day believe, to gather a

  1031. people for Himself.

1032. If you turn in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 5.21,

  1033. we read this.

  1034. For our sake.

  1035. For our sake.

1036. For sinners who would one day believe.

  1037. For our sake.

1038. For our sake, He, the Father, made Him, the Son,

1039. to be sin who knew no sin.

  1040. He was innocent.

1041. So that in Jesus, we might become the

  1042. righteousness of God.

1043. Why would God the Father forsake His

  1044. innocent Son?

1045. He put our sin on Him and poured out His

1046. wrath on it for our sake.

1047. In Matthew 20.28, Jesus, speaking of His death,

1048. says, I have not come to be served, but to

1049. serve and to give my life as a ransom for many.

1050. Right here at this moment, Jesus is ransoming

  1051. the many.

1052. He's giving His life for all who would one day

1053. believe in the Son and pay for their sin.

1054. A ransom is a payment to release a slave or

1055. for to give a debt.

1056. And Jesus is paying the ultimate ransom price

1057. with His life for you and for me.

1058. The eternal wrath of God was being poured out on the

  1059. eternal Son of God.

  1060. Remember, this is Passover.

1061. He's our Passover sacrifice whose death delivers us

  1062. from God's pending judgment.

1063. Because we're under the blood, God's wrath is satisfied.

1064. It's because of this ransom payment that Romans 8.1 is

1065. something that Christians can say with full confidence.

1066. There is therefore now no condemnation.

  1067. There's no wrath.

1068. There's no judgment for those who were in Christ Jesus

  1069. because He ransomed me.

  1070. He paid for it.

  1071. 1 Peter 3.18

1072. For Christ also suffered once for sins on the cross.

1073. The righteous for the unrighteous.

1074. He's a substitute that He might bring us to God.

1075. He ransomed sinners in order to reconcile sinners to God.

1076. Why did God the Son,

1077. why was He forsaken by God the Father?

1078. To ransom sinners from their sins.

1079. It comes all the way back to Matthew 1.21

1080. where Jesus is named and He says,

1081. You are the Lord saves

1082. because you are going to save your people from their sins.

1083. And here He is doing it.

  1084. Christ crucified.

  1085. The King of Israel.

  1086. The Son of God.

  1087. Emmanuel.

1088. Being crucified and forsaken by His Father

1089. in order to ransom sinners from their sins.

1090. And then it's really odd

1091. because if you turn back to Matthew 27

  1092. in verse 47 through 49

1093. you have this really strange event that takes place.

1094. The bystanders there are like,

1095. Hey, this man is calling Elijah.

1096. Eli, Eli sounds like Elijah.

  1097. And so they're like,

1098. Hey, hey, hold on a second.

1099. Maybe Elijah is going to come.

  1100. Now,

1101. they have no idea who this is on the cross

1102. and they have no idea what He's doing.

  1103. That He's accomplishing salvation.

  1104. In verse 50,

  1105. we read,

1106. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice

1107. and yielded up His spirit.

  1108. John records in 1930

  1109. what Jesus actually said.

  1110. It is finished.

  1111. What was finished?

1112. His ransom payment was finished.

1113. Paying for your sin and my sin was finished.

1114. And then in the end of verse 50,

1115. He yielded up His spirit.

  1116. It's very clear.

1117. The language is very clear.

1118. His life was not taken from Him.

1119. He gave His life as a ransom for many.

1120. He was willingly there as our substitute.

1121. We move from scene 4

  1122. and the main thing

1123. to seeing its immediate effects.

  1124. In verse 51,

  1125. And behold,

1126. the curtain of the temple

1127. was torn in two from top to bottom.

1128. The curtain being talked about

1129. is the curtain between the holy place

1130. and the holy of holies in the temple.

1131. It was 60 feet high,

  1132. 30 feet wide,

  1133. and what Matthew records,

1134. it was rend from top to bottom.

  1135. And so it's like,

  1136. what does that mean?

  1137. Here's what it means.

1138. Through the death of Jesus,

1139. we all now have access

1140. into the presence of God.

  1141. That's what that means.

1142. There's a new way to come to God.

  1143. It's through Jesus.

  1144. That's the point of Hebrews 9

  1145. and Hebrews 10.

  1146. But there's another implication.

1147. The temple was then and there

  1148. rendered obsolete.

1149. No more need for it.

1150. Because there's a new and better way

  1151. in Jesus

  1152. to come to God.

  1153. The temple now

  1154. has been rendered obsolete.

1155. Major shift in God's saving plan

1156. for the fullness of time.

1157. The focal point is no longer on the temple.

1158. The focal point becomes Jesus.

1159. The curtain of the temple

1160. was torn from top to bottom.

  1161. God initiated this.

1162. God wanted all to come to Him.

  1163. Verse 51,

  1164. there's an earthquake.

  1165. The significance is

  1166. the death of Jesus

  1167. had immediate creation effect.

1168. It literally shook things up.

1169. One might have this anticipation

1170. of what else is going to happen

  1171. among creation

1172. at the start of this work of redemption.

  1173. We read that.

  1174. Tombs were opened up.

  1175. Verse 52.

1176. Now you've got to remember

1177. that the tombs in that day

1178. were tombs hewn into the earth.

1179. And so if there's an earthquake,

  1180. rock splitting,

  1181. it opens up tombs.

1182. Now that might be a little confusing

  1183. to you to read.

1184. The tombs also were opened up

1185. and many bodies of the saints

1186. who had fallen asleep were raised.

1187. The best way to understand that is

  1188. on this Friday,

1189. the tombs also were opened up,

  1190. complete stop,

  1191. and then that and

  1192. picks up on Sunday,

  1193. resurrection Sunday.

1194. And many bodies of the saints

  1195. who had fallen asleep

1196. were raised on that Sunday

1197. and coming out of the tombs

  1198. after His resurrection,

1199. they went into the holy city

  1200. and appeared to man.

1201. Do you know what happened

  1202. as a result?

  1203. Old Testament saints

  1204. who trusted God

1205. would be raised to life

1206. and what it says is

  1207. even Old Testament faith

  1208. depended upon the Christ.

  1209. Now could you imagine

  1210. if you were there?

1211. You'd just taken all this in.

  1212. You're just sitting around

  1213. watching this.

  1214. You're the centurions

1215. and his three other Roman soldiers.

  1216. You've seen the revilings

  1217. of the other Jews.

  1218. You've seen how Jesus

  1219. responded to that.

1220. You yourself had reviled him.

1221. You nailed him to the cross.

  1222. You've seen it happen.

1223. You saw the darkness come in.

  1224. You heard him say,

  1225. my God, my God,

1226. why have you forsaken me?

  1227. You heard him say,

  1228. it is finished.

  1229. You felt the earthquake.

1230. And so what we read

  1231. in verse 54,

  1232. truly,

1233. this was the Son of God.

1234. You have the first Gentile convert

1235. after the death of Jesus.

  1236. Jesus.

  1237. The centurion,

  1238. he's somehow,

  1239. someway recognizing

1240. that this is God's Son.

  1241. Christ's death

  1242. opened up a way

  1243. and the immediate response

  1244. is a Gentile centurion

  1245. confessing Jesus

1246. as the Son of God.

  1247. in verses 55 and 56,

  1248. Matthew is clear

1249. to show that there are women there.

  1250. Though the male disciples

  1251. have bailed,

  1252. the women are there.

  1253. They're holding out.

  1254. The last scene

  1255. is the burial

  1256. in Joseph's tomb.

  1257. And that's 57 through 61.

  1258. Matt's here.

1259. I'm going to leave that to you

1260. to do a little bit more work

  1261. in next week.

1262. But here's what I want you to see.

  1263. He's dead.

  1264. He really died.

  1265. He's put in a tomb.

1266. Here's the point of it all.

  1267. This is the climax

  1268. of Matthew's gospel.

  1269. And he's showing us

1270. what Jesus had to endure

1271. in order to save sinners.

  1272. The worst part

  1273. wasn't the mockery

  1274. of the Roman soldiers.

  1275. The worst part

  1276. wasn't the pain

  1277. of the cross.

  1278. The worst part

  1279. wasn't the mockery,

1280. the reviling of the Jews.

  1281. The worst part

  1282. was being forsaken

  1283. by his Father.

  1284. And he did that

  1285. for you

1286. that you could be forgiven.

  1287. Ransomed.

  1288. He gave his life

  1289. for yours.

1290. Let me close with one application.

1291. It means salvation for you.

  1292. It means salvation.

1293. If you came into this room

  1294. and you're thinking,

1295. oh, I believe that Christ

  1296. was crucified.

  1297. My prayer

1298. is that you would recognize

  1299. that he was crucified

  1300. for you.

  1301. It is personal.

1302. He did it for you.

1303. When was the last time

  1304. you took stock

  1305. and thought through

1306. all that the Son of God endured

  1307. in order to pay

  1308. for your sin

1309. so that you could come

  1310. into a real

  1311. and living relationship

  1312. with God,

  1313. it means salvation.

  1314. And that's something

  1315. we sing about.

  1316. That's something

  1317. that we proclaim.

  1318. That's something

  1319. that informs

  1320. our very,

  1321. very life

  1322. as a church.

1323. This is what is of called

  1324. first importance.

  1325. The main thing

  1326. is to keep

  1327. the main thing

  1328. the main thing.

  1329. And when it comes

  1330. to biblical Christianity,

  1331. the main thing

  1332. is summed up

  1333. in two words.

  1334. Christ crucified.

  1335. Christ crucified.

  1336. Do you believe

  1337. he was crucified

  1338. for you?

1339. And if this is the day

1340. that lights are going on

  1341. for you

  1342. for the first time,

  1343. come on down front

  1344. after we sing.

  1345. I'd be glad

  1346. to talk to him

  1347. about you.

  1348. Let's pray.

  1349. God in heaven,

  1350. we give you

  1351. great thanks

  1352. and praise

  1353. for all that happened

  1354. to Jesus

  1355. by your will

  1356. on the cross.

  1357. we see

  1358. the outworking

  1359. of Isaiah

  1360. 20,

  1361. of Psalm 22.

  1362. We see Isaiah

  1363. 53 10.

  1364. It was your will

  1365. to crush him.

  1366. And we see him

  1367. willingly doing it,

  1368. lovingly doing it

  1369. to save us.

  1370. God,

1371. would you do a work,

1372. press this into our hearts,

  1373. change the way

  1374. that we live.

1375. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1376. Amen.

  1377. Amen.

  1378. Amen.

  1379. Amen.

  1380. Amen.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. Amen.

  1383. Amen.

  1384. Amen.
