  1. If you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 28, we are in what's called the Great Commission.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  2. We've reached the end of our study of the book of Matthew.

  3. We've been in Matthew for some time, and today we're going to wrap up this wonderful story,

  4. this gospel, this testimony of Jesus, and we're going to hear him speak.

  5. It's his final words.

  6. So if you're there, this is the risen Jesus speaking to his 11 disciples, Matthew 28, 16 through 20.

  7. Now the 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  8. And when they saw him, they worshipped him.

  9. But some doubted.

  10. And Jesus came and said to them, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  11. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit,

  12. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  13. And behold, I am with you always.

  14. To the end of the age.

  15. There's a report from 2015 of the United Nations global issues.

  16. And if you looked at it, the global issues pertaining to human beings on the planet were the AIDS epidemic,

  17. children being taken advantage of at risk, women being exploited, terrorists on the prowl,

  18. and among other things, the UN, United Nations is saying we need to address these things.

  19. These are great global causes that need attention.

  20. And they are worthy causes.

  21. We want to be helping AIDS victims.

  22. We want to be helping children at risk.

  23. We want to be helping women who are being exploited.

  24. We want to be doing something about global terrorism.

  25. But what we don't see on this is Jesus' words addressing the greatest issue this world faces.

  26. And that's the issue of sin.

  27. To go make disciples of the nations.

  28. So as followers of Jesus, when we see this global need to address AIDS epidemic,

  29. we step into it to do research and to help people and to tell them about Jesus to make disciples of AIDS victims.

  30. And when we encounter children at risk in crisis, we need to think well about social implications

  31. and what's going on structurally in cities and in homes and neighborhoods.

  32. And we need to address these things well.

  33. But we need to make disciples of children at risk.

  34. Women who are being sexually exploited.

  35. We need to put a stop to this.

  36. We need to be a part of that.

  37. But women who are being exploited, among other things, need a savior.

  38. We need to be making disciples of women who are being sexually exploited

  39. and the men sexually exploiting them.

  40. We need to find solutions to the ideological problems undermining terrorism.

  41. But we got to be making disciples out of terrorists.

  42. Love your enemy.

  43. These causes are great causes and we need to be a part of them.

  44. But there's one big, great cause that Jesus calls all of his disciples to be fulfilling.

  45. And we see it in Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  46. And it's the command, make disciples of all nations.

  47. It's global in its scope.

  48. My prayer for you all week long is that you would be motivated to engage more fully

  49. in Christ's global task of making disciples.

  50. His church has been entrusted with the responsibility to make disciples of the nations.

  51. Now, I'm guessing when you hear stuff like this,

  52. you start having a variety of things bubbling up in your hearts.

  53. So, for example, you'd be like, one of your first responses would be like,

  54. I'm supposed to be part of his global work of making disciples.

  55. I am an absolute mess.

  56. Why would he want to use me?

  57. Does he know what he's getting into if he wants to use me in making disciples of the nations?

  58. I don't really have anything to offer.

  59. I'm a mess and a failure.

  60. If you knew my life, why would he ever want to use me?

  61. Has anybody in the room been there before?

  62. Jesus has a word for you today.

  63. He's a word of grace for you.

  64. He specializes in turning failures into those who fulfill his great commission.

  65. Maybe there's some of you in the room today who've come in and you hear this stuff and you're like,

  66. one more thing to add to my to-do list.

  67. I don't have time for this.

  68. I agree, but I don't have time.

  69. This morning, God has a word for you.

  70. He wants you to get a big dose of his universal authority.

  71. He has a claim on every human being on the planet, including you.

  72. And so when you are confronted with his global cause,

  73. you need to be asking yourself,

  74. maybe I should make time for this,

  75. given who he is.

  76. And then there's some of us who've come into this room

  77. and we hear about fulfilling the great commission

  78. and you're like, okay, surely I'm going to have to share my faith, right?

  79. That means evangelism.

  80. That means witnessing.

  81. I've got to talk to my neighbors, don't I?

  82. Don't I?

  83. And you start asking a set of questions.

  84. They never come explicitly.

  85. They're more like background music.

  86. Well, one of them is I start sharing my faith with my neighbor

  87. and one of them is if they don't like it,

  88. then what am I going to do when I'm mowing my lawn

  89. and I see this guy mowing the lawn?

  90. What does that mean?

  91. It's going to be weird.

  92. One of them is if I get asked a question

  93. that I don't know what to answer.

  94. He stumps me.

  95. She stumps me.

  96. What do I do?

  97. This is fear.

  98. We're afraid.

  99. And the Lord Jesus has a powerful promise for you this morning

  100. that is designed to crowd out fear.

  101. My prayer for you all week long

  102. is that God by His Spirit would freshly motivate you

  103. to step into the great commission.

  104. He may speak a word of grace to you this morning.

  105. He may speak a word of authority to you this morning.

  106. He may speak a word of promise to encourage you this morning.

  107. Whatever the case,

  108. He wants you fulfilling His great task.

  109. So here's how we're going to proceed.

  110. We're just going to follow the text.

  111. And so four moves.

  112. First one is this.

  113. We're going to get a dose of amazing grace.

  114. Second is this.

  115. We're going to see Jesus in His universal authority.

  116. Third, the great task itself.

  117. Make disciples.

  118. And the fourth is a powerful promise.

  119. So let's dive in.

  120. His amazing grace.

  121. Verses 16 and 17.

  122. Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee

  123. to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

  124. And when they saw Him,

  125. they worshipped Him.

  126. But some doubted.

  127. And you're like thinking,

  128. well, I can see reunion there.

  129. I see the reunion.

  130. Remember that old Wendy's commercial

  131. with that old lady?

  132. Where's the beef?

  133. Where's the grace?

  134. Where's the grace here?

  135. Well, let's start asking some questions.

  136. When was the last time Matthew

  137. had the camera of his pen on the disciples?

  138. It was back in Matthew 26, 56.

  139. Then all the disciples left Him

  140. and fled in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  141. So the last time we really encountered the disciples

  142. is when they're on the run.

  143. If it was a camera,

  144. you would see their backs running from Jesus.

  145. 26, 69 through 75.

  146. Peter bolts, but he kind of lingers.

  147. And then he denies Jesus three times.

  148. A servant girl says,

  149. you also were with Jesus the Galilean.

  150. Peter, I don't know what you mean.

  151. Another servant girl,

  152. this man was with Jesus of Nazareth.

  153. And then Peter says,

  154. with an oath,

  155. I swear I do not know the man.

  156. And then certainly you too are one of them

  157. for your accent betrays you.

  158. 26, 75.

  159. And then invoking a curse,

  160. I swear may God throw me in hell.

  161. I do not know the man.

  162. And then a rooster crows three times.

  163. The last time we see the disciples,

  164. they're a mess.

  165. A bunch of failures.

  166. A bunch of guys who are denying

  167. and deserting and disobeying their Lord.

  168. Then immediately following the resurrection,

  169. still inside of the tomb,

  170. 28, 7.

  171. The angel tells the two Marys

  172. that the risen Jesus,

  173. he's calling a meeting in Galilee.

  174. Go to Galilee.

  175. He's going to meet you there.

  176. And then in 28, 10,

  177. after the risen Jesus physically appears

  178. to the Marys,

  179. he says,

  180. go tell my brothers,

  181. there's a little grace,

  182. go tell my brothers

  183. that I'm calling a meeting with them

  184. in Galilee,

  185. which is north of where they were,

  186. Jerusalem.

  187. Now let me ask you this question.

  188. If you were on a team

  189. and your leader,

  190. in the moment of his or her greatest need,

  191. and you desert that leader,

  192. and then after the leader

  193. goes through the hard times,

  194. he comes back

  195. and you get an email saying,

  196. hey, I'm calling a meeting.

  197. I want to meet with you.

  198. What are you thinking?

  199. This isn't going to be good.

  200. What we see going on here

  201. in Matthew

  202. is that

  203. Jesus is actually

  204. purposely pursuing

  205. his disciples

  206. who disobeyed him,

  207. deserted him,

  208. and denied him,

  209. and he's going to meet them

  210. in Galilee.

  211. If you just turn back

  212. in your Bibles

  213. to Matthew chapter 26,

    Matthew 26:32

  214. verse 32,

  215. Jesus knew

  216. it was going to happen.

  217. He tells them,

  218. this is 31,

  219. you will all fall away

  220. because of me this night

  221. for it is written,

  222. I will strike the shepherd

  223. and the sheep of the flock

  224. will be scattered,

  225. but after I'm raised up,

  226. I'll go before you to Galilee.

  227. Get it on your calendar.

  228. I have a meeting

  229. in Galilee planned

  230. after my resurrection.

  231. And now,

  232. in 28,

  233. he's like,

  234. time for the meeting.

  235. Why Galilee?

  236. Why Galilee?

  237. Well, the simple answer is,

  238. this is where Jesus

  239. began his ministry.

  240. This is where Jesus

  241. called these men

  242. to follow him.

  243. This is the original region

  244. where he called them

  245. to come after him.

  246. And so now he's going back

  247. to meet them

  248. in Galilee,

  249. and you know what he's going to do?

  250. He's going to call them again.

  251. He's going to call them

  252. to follow him

  253. once again.

  254. Matthew doesn't record

  255. this incident,

  256. but in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  257. 15 through 19,

  258. Jesus is back in Galilee

  259. post-resurrection,

  260. and he has this interaction

  261. with Simon Peter.

  262. So this one-on-one meeting,

  263. and we're given

  264. a kind of front row seat to it.

  265. Jesus says,

  266. Simon, son of John,

  267. do you love me more than these?

  268. Do you love me more

  269. than catching fish?

  270. Simon Peter says,

  271. yes, Lord,

  272. you know that I love you.

  273. Feed my lambs.

  274. We've got a job change.

  275. Simon, son of John,

  276. do you love me?

  277. Yes, Lord,

  278. you know that I love you.

  279. Tend my sheep.

  280. You're not fishing anymore.

  281. You're in the shepherding

  282. business now.

  283. Lord, Simon,

  284. son of John,

  285. do you love me?

  286. Third time.

  287. You think it corresponds

  288. to anything?

  289. Lord,

  290. you know everything.

  291. You know everything.

  292. You know what I did,

  293. Lord.

  294. You know what I did.

  295. And you know that

  296. I love you still.

  297. And then Jesus says,

  298. feed my sheep.

  299. Verse 19,

  300. Jesus tells Peter

  301. how he's going to die.

  302. And then at the end,

  303. two words.

  304. Follow me.

  305. In Galilee,

  306. after his resurrection,

  307. calling his rock

  308. back to obey him

  309. and live for him,

  310. to follow him.

  311. You know why he's back

  312. in Galilee with his disciples?

  313. Because he loves them.

  314. He's called them.

  315. He's got work for them to do.

  316. And he's going to reinstate them.

  317. Do you notice

  318. where they meet in Galilee?

  319. Verse 16,

  320. on a mountain.

  321. There's a lot of mountain action

  322. in Matthew.

  323. The last time we were

  324. on a mountain in Galilee

  325. with Jesus,

  326. do you know what was happening?

  327. He was being transfigured

  328. in front of Peter,

  329. James, and John.

  330. The effect,

  331. Peter went all stupid

  332. and he starts talking

  333. and blabbing

  334. and building about tents

  335. and then God the Father

  336. interrupts and says,

  337. this is my beloved son

  338. with whom I'm well pleased.

  339. Listen to him.

  340. So on the mountain

  341. in Galilee,

  342. Jesus has revealed himself

  343. in glory.

  344. Do you think it's the same mountain

  345. that Jesus called this meeting

  346. in Galilee?

  347. My bet is that it is.

  348. But what we see happening here

  349. in Matthew 28,

  350. it's not a revelation

  351. of the glorified Jesus,

  352. but a revelation

  353. of the risen Jesus.

  354. And he's there

  355. with a heart full of mercy

  356. and grace.

  357. in verse 17,

  358. we see the effect.

  359. They worshiped him.

  360. These disciples

  361. worshiped him.

  362. It's a very similar effect

  363. as 28, 9

  364. where Mary,

  365. the two Marys,

  366. they worshiped Jesus

  367. and in 28, 9,

  368. did you notice

  369. that they grabbed hold

  370. of his feet?

  371. Do you know why

  372. they grabbed hold

  373. of his feet?

  374. Because they were lying

  375. at his feet.

  376. They were worshiping him.

  377. The right response

  378. when you encounter

  379. the risen Christ

  380. is to fall at his feet.

  381. And in verse 17,

  382. we see that,

  383. but some doubted.

  384. Some doubted.

  385. Now, this is where

  386. I want you to listen carefully.

  387. If you're one of these people

  388. in the room wondering,

  389. could God ever use me?

  390. You need to hear this.

  391. Some doubted.

  392. That word doubt

  393. is the same word

  394. that's used in

  395. Matthew 14, 31

  396. when Jesus,

  397. when Peter's going out

  398. on the water

  399. to Jesus

  400. and he falls in

  401. and Jesus pulls him out

  402. and he says,

  403. oh you of little faith,

  404. why did you doubt?

  405. And the idea there is,

  406. why did you hesitate?

  407. Why didn't you come out

  408. in full?

  409. What was the caution?

  410. What's the problem?

  411. Now, what's going on

  412. here in Galilee

  413. with some of these disciples

  414. who were doubting?

  415. Well, they could have

  416. had real legitimate questions

  417. like,

  418. is this the real Jesus?

  419. I've never encountered

  420. someone who's resurrected before.

  421. Is it really him?

  422. Kind of like Thomas

  423. in John 20, 24 through 29

  424. where, hey,

  425. until I see it,

  426. I'm not going to believe it.

  427. But what would you be thinking

  428. if the Jesus

  429. you had just deserted

  430. to his death

  431. called a meeting with you?

  432. What do you want to do with me?

  433. What are you going to bring?

  434. Why do you want to meet with me?

  435. Some of you come in here

  436. and say,

  437. he can't use me.

  438. I've blown it.

  439. If you knew my life,

  440. you'd know it.

  441. I've deserted him in one sense.

  442. I've denied him.

  443. I've disobeyed him.

  444. I think I maybe

  445. even got disqualified.

  446. You're really hard on yourself.

  447. You think you've failed.

  448. You think there's no chance

  449. that God could ever use you

  450. for anything.

  451. You think.

  452. But it turns out

  453. that this little snapshot

  454. is a snapshot

  455. of the amazing grace

  456. of the risen and reigning

  457. Jesus Christ.

  458. Before the risen Jesus

  459. gives the great commission

  460. to his disciples,

  461. he gives them great grace.

  462. The risen Christ

  463. goes to his failed followers

  464. and not only is he with them,

  465. he calls them

  466. to follow him again.

  467. John 19.

  468. Though they had given up

  469. on him,

  470. he had not given up

  471. on them.

  472. So when we go back

  473. to Matthew chapter 10

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  474. and we see him calling

  475. these apostles,

  476. well, you know what

  477. you've got to realize?

  478. He called them

  479. knowing full well

  480. of what lay ahead of them.

  481. He called them

  482. knowing what would happen

  483. in the mess of Matthew 26

  484. and he called them

  485. purposefully.

  486. He knew he would

  487. reinstate them in grace.

  488. It's all part of his plan.

  489. He purposefully

  490. uses failures.

  491. You want to know

  492. what the prereq is

  493. to being used

  494. by the living God

  495. for his global purposes?

  496. The prereq is failure.

  497. Pours out his grace

  498. on people who fail him

  499. in order to use him,

  500. to tenderize them.

  501. So Christian,

  502. he's purposefully called you

  503. knowing full well

  504. when he did

  505. what lay ahead of you

  506. and what lay behind you.

  507. And the basis

  508. of his reinstatement

  509. of his disciples

  510. is his substitutionary death.

  511. He forgave them

  512. for what they did

  513. based upon his cross work.

  514. And so these men,

  515. like you and me,

  516. needed to be forgiven

  517. on the basis of Christ's death

  518. before sent to the nations.

  519. So the good news here is

  520. Jesus doesn't require

  521. perfect disciples.

  522. In fact,

  523. he requires disciples

  524. who know firsthand

  525. his amazing,

  526. restorative grace.

  527. He accepts us

  528. as we are

  529. and changes us

  530. by his grace

  531. despite epic failure.

  532. And so I hope you see here

  533. not just a reunion

  534. of Jesus and his disciples,

  535. but a reinstating

  536. of his disciples

  537. by grace.

  538. Grace.

  539. Amazing grace.

  540. How sweet the sound

  541. that saved

  542. and restored

  543. a wretch like me.

  544. So we move

  545. from his amazing grace.

  546. Now let's look

  547. at his universal authority.

  548. In verse 18,

  549. all authority

  550. in heaven and earth

  551. has been given to me.

  552. And if you've got

  553. a red letter edition,

  554. notice,

  555. we go from

  556. black ink narrative

  557. describing what Jesus

  558. is doing

  559. to red ink dialogue.

  560. This is Jesus speaking.

  561. And he starts by saying,

  562. all authority

  563. in heaven and earth

  564. has been given to me.

  565. And what you need

  566. to know about

  567. Matthew chapter 8

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  568. in this section,

  569. Matthew is doing

  570. some tie-in work.

  571. He is connecting

  572. Matthew 28

  573. with Matthew chapter 21

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  574. and here's how

  575. he does it.

  576. In Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  577. excuse me,

  578. Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  579. there's this genealogy.

  580. And in Matthew chapter 1's

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  581. genealogy,

  582. two names pop out.

  583. Abraham and David.

  584. Abraham would be the one

  585. through whom God

  586. blesses the nations

  587. through his offspring

  588. and David is the great king.

  589. And on his throne,

  590. God said,

  591. there's going to be one

  592. who sits forever.

  593. 2 Samuel 7.

  594. When we hear the word authority,

  595. it carries the sense

  596. of the right

  597. to require obedience.

  598. obedience.

  599. Who has authority?

  600. Kings have authority.

  601. And so when Jesus says,

  602. all authority in heaven

  603. and earth

  604. has been given to me,

  605. he's saying,

  606. I am the king.

  607. And what Matthew's

  608. helping us to connect

  609. is he's the king

  610. from David.

  611. The king.

  612. The long-anticipated one.

  613. Like I said,

  614. authority is the right

  615. to require obedience.

  616. Now,

  617. I want you to notice

  618. the scope

  619. of the authority

  620. of King Jesus.

  621. All authority

  622. in heaven

  623. and on earth.

  624. Do you know

  625. what's left out?

  626. Nothing.

  627. Universal authority

  628. in heavens

  629. and on earth.

  630. If you look

  631. through the greatest

  632. telescope

  633. to see how far

  634. out you can see,

  635. he's got authority

  636. there.

  637. The spacecraft

  638. that we sent out

  639. to do research

  640. wherever it goes,

  641. he's got authority

  642. there.

  643. He's got authority

  644. there,

  645. and he's got authority

  646. on every square inch

  647. of this planet.

  648. All authority.

  649. And did you notice

  650. that this is

  651. an authority

  652. that has been

  653. given to him?

  654. All authority

  655. in heaven and earth

  656. has been given to me.

  657. And here is another thread

  658. I'm going to pull on

  659. from the gospel

  660. of Matthew.

  661. It's not the son

  662. of David,

  663. King David thread.

  664. It is the son

  665. of man thread.

  666. All throughout Matthew,

  667. Jesus loves

  668. to reference himself

  669. as the son of man.

  670. In Matthew alone,

  671. that title,

  672. son of man,

  673. is used 30 times.

  674. Remember this one?

  675. The son of man

  676. did not come

  677. to be served,

  678. but to serve

  679. and to give his life

  680. as a ransom for many.

  681. The son of man title

  682. brings our attention

  683. back to Daniel

    Daniel 7:13–14

  684. chapter 7,

  685. verses 13 through 14.

  686. And here's what

  687. I want you to hear.

  688. It says,

  689. one like a son of man

  690. will come to the

  691. ancient of days,

  692. and to him

  693. was given

  694. dominion and glory

  695. in a kingdom

  696. of all peoples,

  697. nations,

  698. and languages

  699. should serve him.

  700. His dominion

  701. is an everlasting

  702. dominion,

  703. which shall not

  704. pass away,

  705. and his kingdom

  706. one that shall

  707. not be destroyed.

  708. So when Jesus

  709. says,

  710. all authority

  711. in heaven and earth

  712. has been given to me,

  713. do you know what he's saying?

  714. I'm the son of man,

  715. and I've come,

  716. and the ancient

  717. of days

  718. has given me

  719. full authority

  720. over everything.

  721. Do you know

  722. how Revelation 5

  723. talks about it?

  724. that the ancient

  725. of days

  726. is sitting on a throne

  727. in heaven

  728. surrounded by angels,

  729. and he holds up

  730. in his right hand

  731. a scroll

  732. with seven seals,

  733. and John sees it,

  734. and he starts crying out,

  735. nobody can take up

  736. the scroll,

  737. nobody in heaven,

  738. nobody in earth,

  739. no one can take

  740. that scroll,

  741. and then before them,

  742. do you know

  743. who stands up?

  744. A lamb

  745. who had been slain,

  746. living,

  747. and that lamb

  748. steps up

  749. to the throne

  750. and takes

  751. the scroll

  752. with his hand

  753. because he alone

  754. is worthy

  755. to take up

  756. the scroll.

  757. Do you know

  758. what the scroll is?

  759. Authority

  760. over all things.

  761. God's plan

  762. for the fullness

  763. of time,

  764. redemption,

  765. judgment,

  766. all together,

  767. only the lamb

  768. has the authority

  769. to unbreak

  770. the scrolls.

  771. He's glorious

  772. in his authority.

  773. authority.

  774. So if you've come

  775. into this room

  776. and you're wondering,

  777. do I have time

  778. for the great commission,

  779. do you know

  780. what Jesus says?

  781. Make time

  782. because all authority

  783. is mine

  784. and I need you,

  785. I want you

  786. to be part

  787. of this great task.

  788. If you've come

  789. in here saying,

  790. I'm not sure

  791. if I got the time,

  792. you've got to realize

  793. that this one

  794. making this claim

  795. is saying

  796. he's got a claim

  797. on every human being

  798. on the planet.

  799. All authority

  800. in heaven and earth

  801. has been given to me.

  802. All authority

  803. to require obedience

  804. of everyone

  805. on the planet

  806. is his

  807. including

  808. a claim on me

  809. and a claim on you.

  810. You know

  811. in the playground

  812. when two boys

  813. are fighting

  814. and one boy says,

  815. you know,

  816. you've got to do this

  817. and the other boy says,

  818. no, I'm not going to do it

  819. and then the boy

  820. who says,

  821. I'm not going to do it

  822. says,

  823. well, who says?

  824. Who says I've got

  825. to do that?

  826. It's a claim

  827. of saying,

  828. by what authority

  829. are you requiring

  830. this of me?

  831. And so when Jesus says,

  832. go make disciples

  833. of the nations

  834. and we find ourselves

  835. saying,

  836. well, who says?

  837. Do you know who says?

  838. The son of man.

  839. The son of David.

  840. The one who possesses

  841. all authority

  842. in heaven and earth.

  843. So far,

  844. what we've seen

  845. is this.

  846. Amazing grace

  847. now coupled

  848. with the universal authority

  849. of the risen Jesus

  850. and so standing

  851. before us right here

  852. is the king

  853. of grace

  854. and he is going

  855. to now entrust us

  856. with the greatest

  857. task

  858. you will ever

  859. be given.

  860. So let's look

  861. at this great task

  862. in chapter 20.

  863. If we ask,

  864. what is the task?

  865. You can sum it up

  866. in five words.

  867. Make disciples

  868. of all nations.

  869. That's the great task.

  870. And it controls

  871. everything here.

  872. It's the command

  873. that commands everything.

  874. We've got to ask

  875. the question,

  876. well, what is a disciple?

  877. Well, essentially,

  878. a disciple

  879. is someone

  880. who has experienced

  881. the life-transforming

  882. grace of Jesus

  883. and is now

  884. focused

  885. on living for Jesus

  886. in every area

  887. of their life.

  888. It's both.

  889. One who's experienced

  890. God's forgiveness

  891. in Christ

  892. and one who's

  893. intentionally

  894. living for Christ

  895. in every area

  896. of their life.

  897. So if you have

  898. someone who says,

  899. okay, I've experienced

  900. God's grace,

  901. but it's not living

  902. for Jesus,

  903. they're not a disciple.

  904. And if you have

  905. someone who's saying,

  906. well, I'm trying

  907. to live for Jesus,

  908. but they've never

  909. experienced God's grace,

  910. they're not a disciple either.

  911. A disciple is someone

  912. who's experienced

  913. firsthand

  914. the grace of God

  915. and they are seeking

  916. to live for Jesus

  917. in every area

  918. of their life.

  919. That's a disciple.

  920. And what makes

  921. Christianity distinct

  922. from all other religions

  923. on the planet

  924. is this.

  925. Religion says,

  926. I obey,

  927. therefore,

  928. I am accepted.

  929. Where Christianity says,

  930. I am accepted by Christ,

  931. therefore,

  932. I obey.

  933. Religion says,

  934. work so that you

  935. can receive grace.

  936. Christianity says,

  937. receive grace

  938. and put it to work.

  939. Those who've been

  940. graciously accepted

  941. by Christ

  942. intentionally

  943. live for Christ.

  944. And a mature disciple

  945. makes disciples

  946. of others.

  947. Starting next week,

  948. we're going to start

  949. a series called

  950. the 21st Century Disciple.

  951. And what we're going to do

  952. is we're going to tease

  953. this out.

  954. We're going to tease out

  955. what it means

  956. to be a follower

  957. of Jesus

  958. in this place

  959. at this time.

  960. So,

  961. make disciples

  962. of the nations.

  963. You've got to feel

  964. the weight of that

  965. given by the

  966. all-authoritative one.

  967. Now we've got to

  968. ask the question,

  969. how do we do that?

  970. How do we make disciples?

  971. Well, there's three words

  972. here that help us

  973. understand how

  974. to make disciples.

  975. Matthew 28,

  976. 19,

  977. go.

  978. And then we see

  979. baptizing.

  980. And then we see

  981. in 20,

  982. teaching.

  983. We make disciples

  984. by going,

  985. baptizing,

  986. and teaching.

  987. How do we make disciples?

  988. Well, we go.

  989. We move towards

  990. other people.

  991. We don't move away

  992. from them.

  993. We move towards them.

  994. We move towards them

  995. so that we can tell them

  996. about the person

  997. and work of Jesus

  998. so that they would receive

  999. God's blessing

  1000. of salvation.

  1001. We are all missionaries

  1002. sent by Jesus

1003. to declare to the nations

  1004. the blessing

  1005. in His name.

  1006. Do you know

  1007. who the ultimate

  1008. missionary

1009. of the Christian faith is?

  1010. Jesus Himself.

  1011. He came

  1012. in order to reconcile

  1013. us to God.

1014. And now He sends us

  1015. that we would speak

1016. the words of eternal life

  1017. to other people

  1018. that they would be

  1019. reconciled to God.

  1020. So we go.

  1021. I was recently sent

  1022. a video link

  1023. to SpaceX's

  1024. launching

  1025. of the Falcon Heavy.

  1026. Think of this

  1027. go as a launch.

  1028. Think of this

1029. go as a booster rocket

  1030. that is fueled

  1031. by God's

  1032. redeeming grace

  1033. that delivers

  1034. the payload

  1035. of the gospel

  1036. to those

  1037. God has placed

  1038. in the orbit

  1039. of your life.

  1040. Go!

  1041. Go!

  1042. Go to them!

  1043. You've been redeemed.

  1044. You've experienced

  1045. God's grace.

  1046. Now go

  1047. and proclaim

  1048. Jesus to others.

1049. Not only do we go,

  1050. we go baptizing.

  1051. Those who encounter

  1052. the risen Christ,

  1053. those who become

  1054. His disciples,

  1055. they go public

  1056. as His disciples.

  1057. We've got a group

  1058. of people

  1059. who are thinking

  1060. through being baptized

  1061. on March 11th

  1062. right now.

  1063. And on March 11th,

  1064. that evening,

1065. when we're in the pool,

  1066. I'm going to ask

  1067. each baptism candidate

  1068. two questions.

  1069. First question is this.

1070. Have you put your faith

  1071. in Christ alone

  1072. for the forgiveness

  1073. of your sins

  1074. and the promise

  1075. of eternal life?

  1076. Do you know

  1077. what I'm asking them?

  1078. Have you experienced

  1079. the transforming grace

  1080. of Jesus?

1081. And I'm going to ask

  1082. them a second question.

  1083. Have you determined

  1084. to live for Christ

1085. all the days of your life

  1086. no matter what?

  1087. Are you going to

  1088. intentionally live

  1089. for Jesus?

  1090. And when they say

  1091. yes and yes,

  1092. I have the privilege

  1093. of saying,

  1094. based upon your

  1095. profession of faith,

  1096. I baptize you

  1097. in the name singular

  1098. of God,

  1099. of the Father,

  1100. the Son,

  1101. and the Holy Spirit.

1102. And then I put them

  1103. down in the water

1104. and I say to them,

  1105. united with Christ

  1106. and His death.

1107. And when they come up

  1108. out of the water

  1109. four minutes later,

  1110. I say,

  1111. raised with Christ

  1112. to newness of life,

  1113. they're going public

  1114. with their faith.

  1115. They're saying,

  1116. I'm identifying

  1117. with the triune God

  1118. of the Bible.

  1119. I've experienced

  1120. His grace

1121. and I'm living for Him.

  1122. That's why I'm doing this.

  1123. And you know

  1124. what the effect is?

  1125. Here's the effect.

  1126. Anybody who sees

  1127. or hears about

  1128. a Christian's baptism,

  1129. if they're not a believer,

  1130. they say,

  1131. oh, oh, oh,

1132. he's one of them now.

1133. She's one of them now.

1134. And for those of us

1135. who are followers of Jesus

  1136. and when we see

  1137. someone baptized

  1138. and they profess

  1139. the good profession

  1140. in public,

  1141. we're starting to say,

1142. oh, they're one of us now.

  1143. They're one of us.

  1144. And so God uses

  1145. this baptism

1146. to set His people apart.

  1147. And He commands us

  1148. to baptize those

  1149. who respond

  1150. to the gospel proclamation.

  1151. Baptism is a disciple's

  1152. public announcement

1153. that they have died to sin

1154. and now live for the triune God.

1155. But not only are we to go

  1156. and while we're going

  1157. proclaiming Christ

  1158. and baptizing,

1159. this is all part of

  1160. making disciples,

  1161. we're teaching them.

  1162. We're teaching them.

  1163. Teaching them what?

  1164. Jesus says,

1165. all that I commanded you.

  1166. You teach them

1167. all that I taught you.

1168. What you receive from me

  1169. entrust to them.

  1170. Take, give.

1171. And so when Jesus says,

1172. if anyone would come after me,

  1173. he must deny himself,

  1174. take up his cross

  1175. and follow Him,

1176. we got to say that to people.

1177. Before you become a Christian,

  1178. my friend,

1179. before you become a Christian,

  1180. are you willing

  1181. to deny yourself,

  1182. take up your cross

  1183. and follow Jesus

  1184. all your days?

  1185. We don't advocate

  1186. an easy believism here.

  1187. To become a Christian

  1188. is to follow Jesus

  1189. and it changes everything.

1190. We also teach things like,

  1191. hey, love God

1192. with all that you got.

  1193. Matthew 22.

  1194. You love God

  1195. with all your heart,

  1196. mind, and strength.

  1197. Don't love yourself

  1198. with all your heart,

  1199. mind, and strength.

  1200. Don't love money

  1201. with all your heart,

  1202. mind, and strength.

  1203. Love God

  1204. with all your heart,

  1205. soul, mind, and strength.

1206. And so what that means

  1207. is this.

  1208. When we call people

  1209. to follow Jesus

1210. and they need to deny

  1211. themselves to follow Him,

1212. they got to give up

  1213. the greedy gathering

  1214. of money.

  1215. And for the glory

  1216. of Jesus,

  1217. they generously

  1218. give money away

  1219. for the cause

  1220. of Christ.

  1221. And we need Him.

  1222. Matthew 22,

  1223. Jesus goes on,

  1224. He says,

  1225. teach,

  1226. we need to teach

  1227. to love our neighbors

  1228. as ourselves.

  1229. So what we do

  1230. is we teach disciples

  1231. of Jesus

  1232. to love those

  1233. who look like you

  1234. and love those

1235. who don't look like you.

  1236. To love those

  1237. who like you

  1238. and love those

  1239. who don't like you.

  1240. Because that's what

  1241. Jesus taught us.

1242. But if I can just say

  1243. one thing here,

1244. and if I can just be true

  1245. to Jesus' words,

  1246. notice He says,

  1247. teaching them

  1248. to observe

  1249. all that I have

  1250. commanded you.

  1251. Disciples are made

  1252. by teaching them

  1253. to obey

  1254. what Jesus commanded.

  1255. So not only

  1256. do we tell them,

  1257. hey,

1258. if you want to follow Jesus,

1259. you've got to deny Him

  1260. to yourself.

  1261. We say,

1262. you've got to obey that.

1263. We don't just tell them,

  1264. love God with everything

  1265. you've got.

  1266. It's like,

  1267. you've got to.

1268. Not just love your neighbor.

  1269. It's like,

  1270. you really do

  1271. need to obey Jesus

  1272. in that.

  1273. We teach His disciples

  1274. to obey

  1275. all that He commanded.

  1276. The goal

  1277. of Christian teaching

  1278. isn't just

  1279. getting as much truth

  1280. into the warehouse

  1281. of a person's brain

1282. and just let it sit there.

  1283. That's not the goal.

  1284. Don't think about

  1285. your brain

  1286. as a warehouse.

  1287. Think about it

  1288. as a distribution center

  1289. of grace.

  1290. The goal

  1291. of truth,

  1292. the goal

  1293. of Christian teaching

  1294. is to get

  1295. biblical truth

  1296. into the distribution center

  1297. of your mind

  1298. and order it

1299. for it to be distributed

  1300. in every area

  1301. of your life

  1302. through obedience.

  1303. Jesus wants

  1304. all of His commands

  1305. functioning fully

  1306. in the life

  1307. of a mature Christian

  1308. for your good.

  1309. So we make disciples

  1310. by calling them

  1311. to Jesus,

  1312. by going to them,

  1313. baptizing them,

  1314. and teaching them

  1315. and notice

  1316. who Jesus calls us

  1317. to go to.

  1318. Who do we make

  1319. disciples of?

  1320. We make disciples

  1321. of all nations.

  1322. The Son of Man

  1323. who's been given

  1324. authority over

  1325. all in heaven

  1326. and earth,

  1327. He makes a universal

  1328. claim on the nations.

  1329. All people everywhere,

  1330. Jew and Gentile,

  1331. black and white,

  1332. male and female,

  1333. old and young,

  1334. all over,

  1335. He has claim

  1336. on them

  1337. because He's

  1338. universal authority

  1339. over them.

  1340. Every image bearer

  1341. in this city

  1342. and around the world

  1343. needs to hear

  1344. of the person

  1345. and work of Jesus

  1346. to be reconciled

  1347. to Him.

  1348. There's another

  1349. Matthew 1 tie-in here.

  1350. Remember that genealogy

  1351. spoke of David

  1352. and Abraham.

  1353. Genesis chapter 12

    Genesis 12:3

  1354. verse 3 says,

  1355. Through an offspring

  1356. of Abraham,

  1357. all the families

  1358. of the world

  1359. would be blessed.

  1360. All the nations

  1361. of the world.

  1362. What Matthew

  1363. is helping us

  1364. see here

  1365. is that Jesus

  1366. is the offspring

  1367. of Abraham

  1368. through whom

  1369. all blessings

  1370. of God's salvation

  1371. are distributed

  1372. to the world.

  1373. Jesus came

  1374. with blessing

  1375. on His lips.

  1376. Remember Matthew 5,

  1377. 3 through 10?

  1378. Those who respond

  1379. to Jesus

  1380. in repentance

  1381. and faith,

  1382. blessed are the poor

  1383. in spirit

  1384. for theirs is the

  1385. kingdom of heaven.

  1386. Blessed are those

  1387. who mourn

1388. for they shall be comforted.

  1389. Blessed are the meek

  1390. for they shall inherit

  1391. the earth.

  1392. Blessed are those

  1393. who hunger and thirst

  1394. for righteousness

1395. for they shall be satisfied.

  1396. Blessed are the merciful

1397. for they shall receive mercy.

  1398. Blessed are the pure

  1399. in heart

1400. for they shall see God.

  1401. Blessed are the peacemakers

  1402. for they shall be

  1403. called sons of God.

  1404. Blessed are those

  1405. who are persecuted

  1406. for righteousness sake

  1407. for theirs is the

  1408. kingdom of heaven.

  1409. Blessing, blessing,

  1410. blessing, blessing,

  1411. blessing.

  1412. Through Jesus,

  1413. the offspring of Abraham,

  1414. all the nations

  1415. of the world

  1416. will be blessed.

  1417. Here's what this means

  1418. for us.

  1419. God wants blessing

  1420. to fall upon

  1421. the residents

  1422. of Allendale.

  1423. He wants them

  1424. to experience

  1425. his new kingdom blessing.

  1426. In order for them

  1427. to experience that,

  1428. they need someone

  1429. telling them

  1430. about Jesus.

  1431. Harbor Park,

  1432. God wants them

  1433. to experience

  1434. the blessing in Christ,

1435. but in order for them

  1436. to experience that,

  1437. they must have someone

  1438. tell them about Jesus.

  1439. Frank Neighborhood,

  1440. Wilson,

  1441. Lincoln Park,

  1442. Forest Park,

  1443. Whitecaps,

  1444. Horizons,

  1445. you name it.

  1446. God wants blessing

  1447. to fall upon people

  1448. in our city.

  1449. And the only way

  1450. that's going to happen

  1451. is if they respond

  1452. in repentance

  1453. and faith to Jesus.

1454. And for that to happen,

  1455. they need someone

  1456. to tell him,

  1457. to proclaim to them

  1458. the person and work

  1459. of Jesus.

  1460. He wants blessing

  1461. to the nations

  1462. and he's ordained it

  1463. in this one

  1464. who has authority

  1465. over the nations

  1466. so that blessing

  1467. will fall upon

  1468. the earth forever.

  1469. If you're a Christian here,

  1470. you need to feel

  1471. the weight and goodness

  1472. of this.

  1473. You have been commissioned

  1474. by the king himself

  1475. to take up

  1476. this great cause

  1477. of making disciples

1478. so that all the nations

  1479. of the world

1480. would be blessed in him.

  1481. Think about your neighbor

  1482. on your right

  1483. and your left

  1484. of where you live.

  1485. God wants blessing

  1486. in Christ on them.

  1487. And he's called you

1488. to bring it to him.

1489. At least offer it to him.

  1490. Christ's amazing grace

  1491. coupled with his

  1492. universal authority

  1493. compels us

  1494. to take up

  1495. this great task

  1496. of making disciples

  1497. of the nations.

  1498. And this great task

1499. is bigger than any of us

1500. and it's going to be challenged.

  1501. So Jesus ends

  1502. with a promise.

  1503. A powerful promise.

  1504. And behold,

  1505. I'm with you always.

  1506. The promise Jesus

  1507. makes here

  1508. at the end

  1509. of the Great Commission

  1510. and at the end

  1511. of the book

  1512. of Matthew

  1513. is a promise

  1514. of his empowering presence.

  1515. And there's another connection

  1516. to Matthew 1.

  1517. Jesus,

  1518. descendant of Abraham,

  1519. descendant of David,

  1520. born of a virgin.

  1521. Do you remember

  1522. what he's called?

1523. Child is given to us

  1524. and his name

  1525. will be called

  1526. Emmanuel.

  1527. God with us.

  1528. Jesus came as God

  1529. with us

1530. and now he sends us

  1531. and he is God

  1532. with us

  1533. on the go.

  1534. He's with us.

  1535. He's with us

  1536. always.

  1537. All authority,

  1538. all nations,

  1539. I'm with you

  1540. always.

  1541. literally,

1542. the whole of every day.

  1543. He is with you.

1544. The whole of every day,

1545. the one who has authority

  1546. over all

  1547. is with you.

  1548. Mediated now

  1549. through the Holy Spirit,

  1550. he is with you.

1551. The whole of every day.

  1552. Let me tell you

  1553. how that works out.

  1554. Him being with us

  1555. empowers purity

  1556. in our church.

  1557. Him being with us

  1558. empowers

  1559. perspective

  1560. until the end

  1561. of the age,

  1562. the culmination.

  1563. We're aimed at that.

  1564. Him being with us

  1565. empowers

  1566. proclamation.

  1567. We boldly

  1568. proclaim

  1569. Jesus,

  1570. who he is,

  1571. what he's done,

  1572. and what he offers

  1573. the nations.

  1574. But this

  1575. empowers

  1576. perseverance.

  1577. This promise

  1578. empowers

  1579. perseverance.

  1580. His presence

  1581. with us

  1582. strengthens us

  1583. to overcome

  1584. any hostility

  1585. directed at us

  1586. on account

  1587. of his great name.

  1588. He gives us

  1589. a promise

  1590. to press on

  1591. through.

  1592. In short,

  1593. the promise

  1594. of his empowering

  1595. presence

  1596. encourages us

  1597. to press

  1598. on

  1599. through

  1600. proclaiming him

  1601. to the nations

  1602. until he comes

  1603. back.

  1604. Why does he

  1605. end

  1606. his commission

  1607. in this book

  1608. with a promise?

  1609. He knows.

  1610. He knows

  1611. that this

  1612. great task

  1613. is bigger

  1614. than any of us

  1615. and he knows

  1616. we're going to be

  1617. tempted to fear.

  1618. And he says,

  1619. I'm with you

  1620. always.

  1621. I'm with you.

  1622. Maybe you came

  1623. in here this

  1624. morning and you're

  1625. like,

  1626. he can't use me.

  1627. Oh,

  1628. he can use you.

  1629. He's got grace

  1630. in abundance

  1631. to make you

  1632. ready and send

  1633. you out.

  1634. There's nothing

  1635. that you have

  1636. done that is

  1637. overwhelming

  1638. to the king

  1639. of kings

  1640. and he can't

  1641. change and

  1642. bring about

  1643. goodness.

  1644. Maybe you came

  1645. in here thinking,

  1646. oh,

  1647. great commission,

  1648. I don't have

  1649. the time for that.

  1650. Well,

  1651. maybe you've

  1652. encountered

  1653. the one who

  1654. has authority

  1655. over all things

  1656. and now you've

  1657. got a little bit

  1658. more awe

  1659. in your heart

  1660. and a little bit

  1661. more humbleness

  1662. and saying,

  1663. oh,

  1664. man,

  1665. I've got to

  1666. make time for

  1667. this.

  1668. My king

  1669. calls me to

  1670. it.

  1671. And maybe

  1672. you came here

  1673. at the thought

  1674. of sharing

  1675. the Jesus,

  1676. the Lord Jesus

  1677. who wants to

  1678. bless your

  1679. neighbors

  1680. came in

  1681. fearful.

  1682. but his

  1683. presence

  1684. puts courage

  1685. in your

  1686. heart

  1687. to proclaim

  1688. Jesus

  1689. in winsome

  1690. and wise

  1691. ways.

  1692. We're going

  1693. to see people

  1694. respond.

  1695. People are

  1696. already responding.

  1697. When we go

  1698. and declare

  1699. Jesus,

  1700. people will

  1701. respond.

  1702. I'm going

  1703. to close

  1704. by saying,

  1705. how does

  1706. this work

  1707. out?

  1708. How do

  1709. we fulfill

  1710. the great

  1711. commission?

  1712. Here's how

  1713. it works

  1714. out.

  1715. Every day,

  1716. this is

  1717. what it

  1718. looks

  1719. like.

  1720. It starts

  1721. with you

  1722. in your

  1723. prayer closet

  1724. with your

  1725. Lord and

  1726. King.

  1727. It's like

  1728. you before

  1729. the Lord

  1730. saying,

  1731. oh Lord,

  1732. use me.

  1733. I'm a little

  1734. nervous,

  1735. but God,

  1736. would you

  1737. give me

  1738. strength,

  1739. would you

  1740. give me

  1741. power to

  1742. live for

  1743. you today,

  1744. to proclaim

  1745. you,

  1746. even if I

  1747. catch heat

  1748. for it.

  1749. It starts

  1750. with you

  1751. in your

  1752. prayer closet,

  1753. then it's

  1754. about you

  1755. around your

  1756. dining room

  1757. table with

  1758. those closest

  1759. to you.

  1760. Do you know

  1761. where we start

  1762. to reach the

  1763. nations?

  1764. around your

  1765. dinner table

  1766. with your

  1767. kids.

  1768. Make disciples

  1769. of them.

  1770. And then we

  1771. move from our

  1772. dining room

  1773. tables to our

  1774. neighbors on the

  1775. right and the

  1776. left and into

  1777. our city.

  1778. we believe that

  1779. God has called

  1780. us uniquely as

  1781. a church to

  1782. call men and

  1783. women from

  1784. every culture

  1785. and race in

  1786. this city and

  1787. to respond to

  1788. Jesus and unite

  1789. us together into

  1790. one people in

  1791. Christ.

  1792. That's why we

  1793. believe we're

  1794. here.

  1795. We believe God

  1796. gets a greater

  1797. glory when he

  1798. unites a

  1799. diversity of

  1800. people.

  1801. people.

  1802. And so we're

  1803. want to

  1804. intentionally reach

  1805. out with the

  1806. gospel to the

  1807. very different

  1808. neighborhoods

  1809. surrounding this

  1810. building in

  1811. Kenosha.

  1812. Now if you're

  1813. looking for a

  1814. place to serve

  1815. you hear this

  1816. message and

  1817. you're like

  1818. you know what

  1819. I'm sold

  1820. where do I

  1821. start?

  1822. We've got a

  1823. couple places

  1824. for you to

  1825. start.

  1826. Wednesday

  1827. afternoon

  1828. mentoring

  1829. program here

  1830. it's called

  1831. King's Place.

  1832. Jasmine are you

  1833. here?

  1834. If you want

  1835. to step into

  1836. something that

  1837. needs people to

  1838. make disciples of

  1839. children this is a

  1840. great place.

  1841. Talk to Jasmine

  1842. after the service.

  1843. She can help

  1844. you.

  1845. Danielle Morrow

  1846. are you here?

  1847. Our King's Kids

  1848. Ministry.

  1849. Do you know why

  1850. we're teaching them

  1851. the Bible?

  1852. So that we would

  1853. make them disciples

  1854. of Jesus.

  1855. If you're interested

  1856. we need help.

  1857. We need hands in

  1858. King's Kids.

  1859. Talk to Danielle.

  1860. Billy Youth

  1861. Ministry.

  1862. We have needs in

  1863. our youth ministry

  1864. for men and

  1865. women to come

  1866. alongside of our

  1867. students to saddle

  1868. up next to them

  1869. and partnering with

  1870. parents help them

  1871. follow Jesus.

  1872. If you have a

  1873. burden for middle

  1874. school and high

  1875. school students

  1876. here's the guy

  1877. you need to talk

  1878. to.

  1879. Wilson Partnership.

  1880. Elise Sear.

  1881. Elise Sear.

  1882. MIA.

  1883. Well said.

  1884. We've got the

  1885. Wilson Partnership

  1951. It's kind of scary.

1952. We run into limits real

1953. quick of time and money

  1954. and resources and people

  1955. but we're so grateful

1956. that you're in it with

  1957. us God.

1958. And we pray Father that

1959. you would pour out on

  1960. our church a fresh

  1961. filling of your spirit,

  1962. a fresh empowering of

  1963. your presence to

  1964. strengthen us to go

  1965. and make disciples of

  1966. our nations, of our

  1967. neighbors, of those

1968. around us, of who we

  1969. live life with.

1970. God, would you give us

1971. eyes to see and bold

  1972. hearts to proclaim.

1973. God, would you rally us

1974. as a church, would you

1975. unite us as a church

1976. in this mission of making

  1977. disciples of the nations.

1978. God, thank you for this

  1979. mission.
