  1. Risen Christ, you are our all in all.

  2. And this morning as we hear you call us to follow you,

  3. I pray that you would give us ears to hear that.

  4. Hearts to respond.

  5. Yes and amen.

  6. I will follow you.

  7. God, would you do a work in us this morning

  8. in which those who've come into this room

  9. who have never responded to your call, Lord Jesus,

  10. today they'll respond.

  11. And I pray for those of us who've been walking with you for some time

  12. that this call would renew our desire to give it all for you.

  13. Would you unite us together as a church

  14. who all together we are intentionally living for you.

  15. You're worthy.

  16. Now we ask that you would, by your spirit,

  17. God, give us eyes to see,

  18. impress these words of Jesus onto our hearts afresh.

  19. In Jesus' name we pray.

  20. Amen.

  21. Children, you are now dismissed.

  22. And as you're going...

  23. If you'd open up your Bibles to Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  24. we're going to be looking at a passage from verses 18 through 26.

  25. I'm going to read that in a second.

  26. But this morning we're starting a series called 21st Century Disciple.

  27. Last week I preached a message on Jesus saying,

  28. go make disciples of the nations.

  29. And we can't assume that we all know what a disciple is.

  30. And so we're going to start teasing out this morning what it means to be a disciple of Jesus

  31. in the 21st century living here in the city of Kenosha.

  32. So Luke chapter 9, verses 18 through 26.

    Luke 9:18–26

  33. Now it happened that he was praying alone.

  34. The disciples were with him.

  35. And he asked them,

  36. who do the crowds say that I am?

  37. And they answered,

  38. John the Baptist,

  39. but others say Elijah,

  40. and others that one of the prophets of old is risen.

  41. Then he said to them,

  42. but who do you say that I am?

  43. And Peter answered,

  44. the Christ of God.

  45. And he strictly charged

  46. and commanded them to tell this to no one,

  47. saying,

  48. the Son of Man must suffer many things

  49. and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes

  50. and be killed and on the third day be raised.

  51. And he said to all,

  52. if anyone would come after me,

  53. let him deny himself

  54. and take up his cross daily and follow me.

  55. For whoever would save his life will lose it,

  56. but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

  57. For what does it profit a man

  58. if he gains the whole world

  59. and loses or forfeits himself?

  60. For whoever is ashamed of me

  61. and of my words of him

  62. will the Son of Man be ashamed

  63. when he comes in his glory

  64. and the glory of the Father

  65. and of the glory or the holy angels.

  66. Verse 27,

  67. but I tell you truly,

  68. there are some standing here

  69. who will not taste death

  70. until they see the kingdom of God.

  71. You know what?

  72. It's amazing how two words

  73. can completely reorient your life.

  74. So for example,

  75. those two words spring forward,

  76. they're going to completely reorient our lives

  77. for a couple days.

  78. Or those two words,

  79. congratulations graduate,

  80. that can reorient your life.

  81. How about this?

  82. You're hired.

  83. That will reorient your life.

  84. Or you're fired.

  85. That will definitely reorient your life.

  86. You're standing at the altar

  87. and you say the two words,

  88. I do.

  89. Just two words,

  90. reorient your life.

  91. But if you're standing in a courtroom

  92. and your former spouse is saying,

  93. it's over,

  94. that will reorient your life.

  95. It's cancer.

  96. Reorientation.

  97. A doctor comes up

  98. and of your spouse says,

  99. he's gone.

  100. Just two words

  101. can reorient your life.

  102. This morning,

  103. we're looking at two words of Jesus.

  104. Two words that must reorient your life.

  105. And they're the two words,

  106. follow me.

  107. And this morning,

  108. I want us to understand

  109. who the me of follow me is

  110. and what exactly he means by follow.

  111. It's a command.

  112. So this morning,

  113. in order to help us understand

  114. what it means to be a follower of Jesus

  115. in the 21st century,

  116. let's be clear on what Jesus means

  117. when he commands,

  118. follow me.

  119. So let's start off with the me.

  120. Who is this guy?

  121. In verses 18 through 22,

  122. we see a couple questions

  123. that Jesus asks.

  124. He's kind of like taking a poll.

  125. We see it in verse 18.

  126. Who do the crowds say that I am?

  127. And basically what Jesus is doing

  128. is he's taking a first century gallop poll

  129. of the Jewish crowds

  130. and his disciples are the pollsters.

  131. And so when they ask the crowds,

  132. who do they say?

  133. He asked them,

  134. who did the crowds say that I am?

  135. His disciple pollsters come back

  136. and they say,

  137. well,

  138. some are saying John the Baptist,

  139. you know,

  140. he was killed by Herod earlier.

  141. He's come back.

  142. Others are saying,

  143. Elijah,

  144. he's come back.

  145. Others are saying that you're

  146. one of the ancient prophets of old

  147. who's come back.

  148. And so they're all kind of

  149. working out of this fear.

  150. You're kind of some kind of prophet

  151. is what the crowds are saying.

  152. And to some degree,

  153. they were right.

  154. Jesus is a prophet.

  155. The greatest of all prophets.

  156. He didn't come just proclaiming God's word.

  157. He is God's incarnate word.

  158. He's the ultimate prophet.

  159. How about if we just sped that up

  160. 21 centuries to today?

  161. Jesus asks to go to Kenosha

  162. and poll Kenosians

  163. on who do Kenosians say that he is.

  164. Be interesting.

  165. So we hop on 60th.

  166. We go down to 60th and age.

  167. There's an Albanian mosque right there.

  168. We walk in and ask the imam,

  169. hey,

  170. who do you say that Jesus is?

  171. And you know what he would say?

  172. We believe that he's a great prophet.

  173. And then we say,

  174. well,

  175. we believe he's God.

  176. He would say,

  177. no, he's not.

  178. We would say,

  179. he was raised from the dead.

  180. He would say,

  181. no, he wasn't.

  182. They believe he was a great prophet.

  183. Or let's say that we show up

  184. at one of the liberal churches around town.

  185. Who do you say that Jesus is?

  186. And they would say,

  187. well,

  188. the Jesus of the New Testament

  189. was probably more of a fabrication

  190. than an accurate historical depiction.

  191. And if you actually believed he died,

  192. well,

  193. his death was a great example

  194. of loving people.

  195. But if you actually think

  196. that he died for people's sins,

  197. you must believe

  198. in some kind of cosmic child abuse.

  199. He's an example,

  200. but did he pay for sins?

  201. Well,

  202. if it works for you.

  203. Or how about we go to one of the bars,

  204. Zazie B's,

  205. or Captain Mike's

  206. on a Friday or Saturday night,

  207. and we pull up to the bar

  208. and we start polling people

  209. who are patronizing the place,

  210. and we ask them,

  211. who do you say that Jesus is?

  212. Well,

  213. we get all sorts of different responses.

  214. I visited a church once,

  215. and I got the message loud and clear.

  216. Stay out!

  217. Bartender,

  218. do you let anybody in here?

  219. The defiant,

  220. you and your Jesus.

  221. If you want me to be truthful with you,

  222. if you want me to tell you

  223. who I think Jesus is,

  224. let me tell you,

  225. he is just some convenient

  226. religious crutch

  227. for those who are simple and weak.

  228. Bartender,

  229. can you give me another one?

  230. It's been a hard week.

  231. In that bar,

  232. we find people who are spiritual.

  233. Jesus,

  234. you know what?

  235. You want me to tell you?

  236. I'm religious.

  237. Well,

  238. I'm not religious,

  239. but I am spiritual,

  240. and I believe people are free

  241. to express their spirituality

  242. in any way they want.

  243. Just don't force it on me.

  244. The crowds of Jesus' day

  245. definitely had an opinion

  246. of who Jesus was.

  247. He was some kind of prophet.

  248. In the crowds of Kenosha

  249. in the 21st century,

  250. there are all sorts

  251. of opinions out there.

  252. All sorts.

  253. It's more like

  254. first century Athens

  255. than first century Judea.

  256. But Jesus has another question.

  257. He moves from polling

  258. the crowds

  259. to polling the pollsters

  260. in verse 20.

  261. But who do you say

  262. that I am

  263. to his disciples?

  264. And Peter,

  265. as the representative leader

  266. of the disciples,

  267. says,

  268. you are the Christ

  269. of God.

  270. You just don't come up

  271. with that on your own.

  272. To equate Jesus

  273. with the Christ

  274. requires a revelation

  275. from God in heaven.

  276. That's why in Matthew,

  277. when Peter makes

  278. this confession,

  279. Jesus responds by saying,

  280. flesh and blood

  281. has not revealed this to you,

  282. but my Father

  283. who's in heaven.

  284. And when Peter's talking

  285. about you are

  286. the Christ of God,

  287. he's saying,

  288. you are the Messiah,

  289. the anointed one,

  290. the long-awaited king

  291. who would come

  292. and sit on David's throne,

  293. and you would reign forever,

  294. and the ancient of days

  295. would give you authority

  296. and dominion

  297. over all things.

  298. After this confession,

  299. though,

  300. it quickly becomes apparent

  301. that Peter in the 11,

  302. they may get

  303. that Jesus is the Christ,

  304. but they've got

  305. a limited understanding

  306. of who the Christ is.

  307. They've typecasted him.

  308. You know what it means

  309. to typecast?

  310. Let's say that we're

  311. putting a film together,

  312. an action film here

  313. in Kenosha,

  314. and we need

  315. a muscle-bound warrior guy

  316. who can overcome the odds

  317. to win a great victory,

  318. and he's got

  319. a really good smile.

  320. Who would we select?

  321. Dwayne Johnson,

  322. The Rock.

  323. He is typecast

  324. for those kind of roles,

  325. isn't he?

  326. The Jews of Jesus' day

  327. had an expectation

  328. of the Christ.

  329. They were expecting him

  330. to play a particular role,

  331. to deliver the nation

  332. of Israel

  333. from the rule of Rome

  334. and to liberate Jerusalem

  335. in order to reestablish

  336. a geopolitical dominance

  337. of ethnic Israel

  338. throughout the world.

  339. They thought he was going

  340. to be a conquering king

  341. in a militaristic

  342. and political sense.

  343. They had been culturally

  344. informed of who Christ is.

  345. They kind of absorbed that

  346. from everyone around them.

  347. They had a similar expectation.

  348. If you were to pull

  349. the same crowds

  350. in first century Judea

  351. and you say,

  352. what's your greatest need?

  353. They thought their greatest need

  354. was deliverance

  355. from a political oppression

  356. in Rome.

  357. And what Jesus is about

  358. to say is,

  359. no,

  360. that's not your greatest need.

  361. your greatest need

  362. is a spiritual deliverance

  363. from the oppression

  364. of sin.

  365. Well, that was then.

  366. How about now?

  367. How would self-professed

  368. followers of Jesus

  369. in the 21st century,

  370. how would they respond

  371. to Jesus asking them,

  372. well, who do you say

  373. that I am?

  374. If we pulled all the churches

  375. gathered this morning

  376. across America

  377. and we asked the individual

  378. Christians in those churches

  379. to answer the question,

  380. who do you say

  381. that I am?

  382. Really?

  383. I think we'd get

  384. some pretty interesting answers.

  385. And what would it,

  386. it would reveal

  387. how culturally informed

  388. our view of the Christ is.

  389. Here's some of the answers.

  390. Jesus, well,

  391. he's my ticket

  392. out of eternity

  393. in hell.

  394. Which is true.

  395. But is that it?

  396. Jesus, well,

  397. he's helping me

  398. to be the best version

  399. of myself.

  400. Jesus, well,

  401. when I can't figure things out,

  402. I call in Jesus.

  403. When I mess things up,

  404. I call in Jesus

  405. to be my fixer.

  406. When I'm down,

  407. Jesus reminds me

  408. of how special I am.

  409. Well, Jesus is my all of all.

  410. I don't need anyone else.

  411. I've got Jesus

  412. in the internet.

  413. I don't need the church.

  414. Jesus is my dream maker.

  415. He knows my dreams

  416. and he will make

  417. my dreams happen.

  418. In our culture,

  419. Americans believe

  420. that our greatest deliverance,

  421. what we need most,

  422. is any deliverance

  423. from anything oppressing

  424. our sense of self-sovereignty,

  425. our sense of what is owed me.

  426. It's American individualism.

  427. And so,

  428. what can happen is

  429. we can have

  430. an Americanized Christianity

  431. that takes Jesus

  432. and makes him

  433. into what I really want

  434. and that is

  435. life all about me.

  436. Americanized Christianity

  437. has a way of making

  438. Christianity

  439. about the followers

  440. of Jesus

  441. instead of the one

  442. who's calling us

  443. to follow him,

  444. Jesus.

  445. Who do you say

  446. that I am?

  447. This morning,

  448. as we're talking about

  449. this me of follow me,

  450. we've got to be clear

  451. on who he is.

  452. We've got to be clear

  453. on it

  454. because what he's about

  455. to call us to

  456. is really hard.

  457. We've got to be clear

  458. on who he is.

  459. So,

  460. is your functional Jesus

  461. the real Jesus

  462. of the Bible

  463. or is he a version

  464. of Jesus

  465. for your convenience?

  466. Have you typecasted him

  467. through a cultural lens?

  468. Jesus.

  469. So,

  470. this morning,

  471. just as Jesus

  472. asked his disciples

  473. about 2,000 years ago,

  474. who do you say

  475. I am?

  476. He's asking you

  477. this morning,

  478. who do you

  479. say that he is?

  480. Really?

  481. In order to follow him

  482. in the way

  483. he commands us to,

  484. we must know

  485. who he is.

  486. So,

  487. we've seen him

  488. ask a question

  489. of the crowds,

  490. we've seen him

  491. ask a question

  492. of the disciples,

  493. now let's us

  494. ask Jesus

  495. a question.

  496. Jesus,

  497. who do you say

  498. that you are?

  499. And he tells us

  500. in verses 21 and 22,

  501. and he strictly

  502. charged and commanded

  503. them to tell this

  504. to no one,

  505. that he's the Christ.

  506. And he says,

  507. the son of man

  508. must suffer many things

  509. and be rejected

  510. by the elders

  511. and chief priests

  512. and scribes

  513. and be killed

  514. and on the third day

  515. be raised.

  516. Now,

  517. this might surprise

  518. you a little bit

  519. because here we are,

  520. Peter just confesses

  521. him as the Christ

  522. that he is the king

  523. of all

  524. and it's kind of like,

  525. why would Jesus

  526. want to keep that

  527. under wraps?

  528. I mean,

  529. doesn't he want

  530. the nations

  531. knowing that he's

  532. the king of kings

  533. and lord of lords,

  534. that he is the Messiah,

  535. the Christ?

  536. Shouldn't they be doing that?

  537. Why is he telling

  538. them to be quiet?

  539. Well,

  540. they should be doing that

  541. provided that they know

  542. who the Christ

  543. really is

  544. and what the Christ

  545. has come

  546. and must do.

  547. If they're going to go

  548. proclaim Jesus

  549. as the liberator

  550. of national Israel,

  551. they got it wrong.

  552. And so what Jesus does

  553. in verse 21

  554. is he says,

  555. hey guys,

  556. before you start going

  557. to tell other people

  558. about me,

  559. get all the information

  560. about me first.

  561. Make sure you truly know

  562. who I am as the Christ

  563. and what I must do

  564. as the Christ

  565. and then go proclaiming.

  566. Jesus is essentially saying,

  567. I am the Christ

  568. but not the Christ

  569. that you want me to be.

  570. I have not come

  571. to liberate the nation,

  572. I have come

  573. to liberate sinners.

  574. And that leads us

  575. to verse 22.

  576. The Son of Man

  577. must suffer many things

  578. and be rejected

  579. by elders

  580. and chief priests

  581. and scribes

  582. and be killed

  583. and on the third day

  584. be raised.

  585. You see that word must?

  586. The Son of Man must,

  587. must suffer,

  588. must be killed,

  589. must be raised.

  590. Jesus is clarifying

  591. who he is

  592. as the Christ.

  593. This is the one

  594. that calls us

  595. to follow him.

  596. The Christ who suffered,

  597. was crucified,

  598. and raised.

  599. He recasts

  600. for his disciples

  601. and us

  602. what the Christ

  603. came to do.

  604. He didn't come initially

  605. as a victorious warrior

  606. to liberate

  607. the nation

  608. of ethnic Israel.

  609. He came as a suffering servant

  610. to liberate sinners

  611. through his sacrificial death

  612. on the cross.

  613. Now,

  614. this sounds good,

  615. but really,

  616. why does it matter?

  617. Who cares?

  618. Here's what's at stake.

  619. The goal

  620. of what Jesus

  621. died for.

  622. The purpose

  623. of his sacrifice.

  624. That's what's at stake.

  625. If you believe

  626. that Jesus

  627. has come

  628. and died

  629. just to make

  630. your life

  631. a little bit better,

  632. you are missing

  633. the depth

  634. and the beauty

  635. and the glory

  636. of what he did

  637. on the cross

  638. on your behalf.

  639. If you're making

  640. Jesus' death

  641. on the cross

  642. something that

  643. is just

  644. to complete you

  645. in some way,

  646. you've bought into

  647. kind of a skim coat

  648. Christianity.

  649. You know what a skim coat is?

  650. You just kind of

  651. fill a little hole

  652. by skimming

  653. some filling over it.

  654. It's just superficial.

  655. It's cheap.

  656. As Dietrich Ponhofer

  657. would say,

  658. it's a cheap grace.

  659. What we see

  660. Jesus talking about

  661. is a work

  662. that he's going to do

  663. on the cross

  664. that is not

  665. a cheap grace

  666. with a skim coat

  667. salvation.

  668. What he does

  669. on the cross

  670. is a deep

  671. work of grace

  672. that brings

  673. about

  674. a costly

  675. salvation.

  676. Jesus paid

  677. it all.

  678. He gave his life

  679. for sinners

  680. and not just

  681. to forgive them

  682. but to call them

  683. to live for him.

  684. He didn't die

  685. to make you

  686. a better version

  687. of yourself.

  688. He died on the cross

  689. to deliver you

  690. from yourself.

  691. Jesus didn't die

  692. for you to be

  693. an add-on

  694. to your life.

  695. He died

  696. to be your life.

  697. Jesus didn't die

  698. for you

  699. in order to somehow

  700. add the missing piece

  701. to your life.

  702. He died

  703. for you

  704. in order that

  705. he would be

  706. the organizational

  707. center

  708. of your life.

  709. I've shared

  710. this illustration

  711. before

  712. and so if you've

  713. heard it

  714. bear with me

  715. but I think

  716. it gets the job

  717. done.

  718. In the 16th century

  719. there was

  720. a mathematician

  721. named Copernicus

  722. Polish guy

  723. he loved math

  724. he loved economics

  725. he loved studying

  726. the stars

  727. and at that time

  728. the common belief

  729. was what's called

  730. a geocentric

  731. understanding

  732. of the solar system

  733. and the idea

  734. there is that

  735. the earth

  736. was believed

  737. to be at the

  738. center

  739. of the solar

  740. system

  741. in the sun

  742. and all the

  743. planets

  744. orbited

  745. the earth

  746. but what

  747. Copernicus

  748. discovered

  749. basically through

  750. math

  751. is that we

  752. don't live

  753. in a geocentric

  754. solar system

  755. we live in

  756. a heliocentric

  757. solar system

  758. the sun

  759. is at the

  760. middle

  761. of our

  762. solar system

  763. and the

  764. earth

  765. orbits

  766. the sun

  767. it was a

  768. complete

  769. reorientation

  770. of how people

  771. thought about

  772. our solar system

  773. maybe you know

  774. where I'm going

  775. with this

  776. when Jesus Christ

  777. died on the cross

  778. and was raised

  779. from the dead

  780. and when he

  781. calls someone

  782. to come follow

  783. him

  784. that grace

  785. that deep

  786. and costly

  787. grace

  788. that he poured

  789. out for sinners

  790. do you know

  791. what that does

  792. it moves you

  793. from a me

  794. centered view

  795. of your life

  796. into a Christ

  797. centered view

  798. of your life

  799. when Jesus

  800. died and was

  801. raised he did

  802. that to deliver

  803. you from a

  804. little life

  805. live for you

  806. to a huge

  807. life live for

  808. Christ

  809. he died in the

  810. place of sinners

  811. sinners

  812. who are completely

  813. absorbed with

  814. themselves

  815. in order to

  816. move them off

  817. themselves

  818. and onto him

  819. and becoming

  820. completely absorbed

  821. and compelled

  822. by him

  823. do you know

  824. what's amazing

  825. about all this

  826. stuff

  827. we did not

  828. invite Jesus

  829. to do this

  830. he initiated

  831. this

  832. God initiated

  833. this

  834. he in his

  835. grace sent

  836. his son

  837. and paid

  838. a huge

  839. cost

  840. with huge

  841. ramifications

  842. in order for

  843. us to get

  844. off ourselves

  845. and get

  846. onto him

  847. so when we

  848. come to

  849. this part

  850. of

  851. Luke 9

  852. and we're

  853. asking the

  854. question who

  855. is this guy

  856. he's more

  857. than a prophet

  858. and he's

  859. the Christ

  860. who was

  861. crucified

  862. and raised

  863. and what

  864. Jesus would

  865. say I

  866. am your

  867. salvation

  868. and what

  869. Jesus would

  870. say

  871. and I

  872. am a

  873. deep

  874. and costly

  875. salvation

  876. that radically

  877. reorients

  878. your life

  879. from living

  880. for yourself

  881. to living

  882. for me

  883. that is

  884. who is

  885. calling us

  886. to follow

  887. him

  888. he's worthy

  889. of it all

  890. he is the

  891. king of kings

  892. and lord of

  893. lords

  894. all things

  895. have been

  896. put under

  897. his feet

  898. and he

  899. calls us

  900. to follow

  901. him

  902. now that

  903. we've

  904. looked at

  905. the me

  906. now let's

  907. look at

  908. the follow

  909. verse 23

  910. and he

  911. said to

  912. all if

  913. anyone would

  914. come after

  915. me let

  916. him deny

  917. himself and

  918. take up his

  919. cross daily

  920. and follow

  921. me

  922. in this

  923. call to

  924. follow

  925. we see

  926. an invitation

  927. and then we

  928. see some

  929. commands

  930. and then he

  931. gets into

  932. some crossroads

  933. and if we

  934. have time

  935. we'll get

  936. there but

  937. let's

  938. look at

  939. this

  940. invitation

  941. in verse

  942. 23

  943. he says

  944. if anyone

  945. would come

  946. after me

  947. if anyone

  948. would come

  949. after me

  950. remember that

  951. me is the

  952. crucified and

  953. risen Christ

  954. if anyone

  955. would come

  956. after me

  957. it's an

  958. invitation

  959. and notice

  960. it's a broad

  961. invitation

  962. if anyone

  963. I'm not sure

  964. about you

  965. but I'm used

  966. to getting

  967. invitations

  968. that are

  969. limited in

  970. nature

  971. or I hear

  972. about someone

  973. going somewhere

  974. that I didn't

  975. get invited

  976. to

  977. we live

  978. in a world

  979. that puts

  980. limits on

  981. inviting people

  982. to things

  983. and what

  984. Jesus does

  985. here is he

  986. invites anyone

  987. to come

  988. after him

  989. so it

  990. doesn't matter

  991. how well

  992. educated or

  993. poorly educated

  994. you are

  995. Jesus says

  996. come after

  997. me

  998. it doesn't

  999. matter how

  1000. old you are

  1001. Jesus says

  1002. come after

  1003. me

  1004. it doesn't

  1005. matter if

  1006. you are

  1007. a man

  1008. or a woman

  1009. come after

  1010. me

  1011. it doesn't

  1012. matter your

  1013. race

  1014. Jesus says

  1015. come after

  1016. me

  1017. it doesn't

  1018. matter your

  1019. income

  1020. it doesn't

  1021. matter your

  1022. address

  1023. it doesn't

  1024. matter your

  1025. criminal record

  1026. Jesus says

  1027. if anyone

  1028. would come

  1029. after me

  1030. there's none

  1031. of those kinds

  1032. of limits

  1033. this is an

  1034. invitation

  1035. what's an

  1036. invitation to

  1037. an invitation

  1038. to what

  1039. if anyone

  1040. would come

  1041. after me

  1042. those words

  1043. come after

  1044. me

  1045. is an

  1046. invitation

  1047. to anyone

  1048. to become a

  1049. lifelong

  1050. disciple of

  1051. the crucified

  1052. and risen

  1053. Christ

  1054. to be a

  1055. disciple of

  1056. Jesus is to

  1057. truly know who

  1058. Jesus is

  1059. crucified Christ

  1060. and risen

  1061. and to

  1062. intentionally live

  1063. for Jesus

  1064. to become a

  1065. disciple of

  1066. Jesus is enter

  1067. into a

  1068. relationship with

  1069. a living

  1070. Christ

  1071. in which you

  1072. will learn

  1073. from him

  1074. you're going

  1075. to enter into

  1076. the Jesus

  1077. school and

  1078. you're going

  1079. to learn from

  1080. him in order

  1081. to obey

  1082. him and when

  1083. you start to

  1084. obey him you

  1085. start end up

  1086. becoming like

  1087. him and when

  1088. you start becoming

  1089. like him you

  1090. end up wanting

  1091. things that he

  1092. wants

  1093. so to

  1094. become a

  1095. disciple of

  1096. Jesus is to

  1097. have your life

  1098. completely reoriented

  1099. off yourself and

  1100. onto Jesus I'm no

  1101. longer living for

  1102. myself I'm living

  1103. for Jesus now

  1104. so what we see

  1105. happening here in

  1106. verse 23 is that

  1107. the Jewish Messiah

  1108. is throwing the

  1109. door wide open

  1110. for anyone to

  1111. come after him

  1112. and become his

  1113. disciple but

  1114. there's an

  1115. interesting word

  1116. here you can't

  1117. pass if anyone

  1118. would come after

  1119. me you see that

  1120. word would it's a

  1121. really important

  1122. word a better

  1123. translation of it

  1124. would be if anyone

  1125. is willing to come

  1126. after me if anyone

  1127. is willing to come

1128. after me and at the

  1129. heart of this

  1130. willingness is a

  1131. heart of humility a

  1132. recognition of who

  1133. Jesus is and a

  1134. feeling of the

  1135. appropriateness to

  1136. follow him in

  1137. humility a

  1138. willing response

  1139. starts saying things

  1140. like this I

  1141. understand who

  1142. Jesus is and I

  1143. understand that to

  1144. follow Jesus is to

  1145. intentionally live for

  1146. Jesus let's not

  1147. surprise people with

  1148. saying oh come to

  1149. Jesus he's going to

  1150. make you really happy

  1151. and then they learn

  1152. out three months

  1153. later that they

  1154. actually have to deny

  1155. themselves to follow

  1156. Jesus when we're

  1157. invited by Jesus to

  1158. say if anyone is

  1159. willing to come after

  1160. me Jesus doesn't

  1161. strong arm anybody

  1162. into the kingdom he

  1163. he doesn't force

  1164. people to follow

  1165. him what he's

  1166. calling people anyone

1167. to do there here is

  1168. to humble themselves

  1169. and to come after

  1170. him to come under

  1171. his gracious holy

  1172. holy rain he moves

  1173. from invitation if

  1174. anyone is willing to

  1175. come after me broad

1176. God got to be willing

  1177. and humble and now

  1178. he's going to raise

  1179. the cost what it

  1180. requires in light of

  1181. his deep and costly

  1182. grace that he poured

1183. out on the cross he

1184. says come after me and

1185. for you to come after

  1186. him you're going to

1187. have to obey him he

  1188. gives us three commands

  1189. if anyone would come

1190. after me if anybody is

  1191. willing to come after

  1192. me he must deny

  1193. himself and he must

  1194. take up his cross

  1195. daily and he must

  1196. follow me three costly

  1197. commands and the cost

1198. is you we're going to

  1199. deny ourselves in order

  1200. to follow Jesus if

  1201. you're willing to come

  1202. after Jesus you must

  1203. deny yourself it's a

  1204. command it's not

  1205. optional Jesus says

1206. if you want to follow

1207. me you got to deny

  1208. yourself in order to

  1209. live for me

  1210. the costly grace that

  1211. God poured out through

1212. Christ on the cross is

  1213. a grace that totally

  1214. reorients us to Jesus

1215. and so we no longer live

  1216. for ourselves and we've

1217. got to deny ourselves so

1218. that we can live for

1219. Jesus now so here's what

1220. it means that word to

  1221. deny yourself can it

1222. means to say no so a

  1223. follower of Jesus one

  1224. who follows him they're

1225. going to have to say no

1226. to their right to my

1227. where am I going to live

  1228. my life self-direction I'm

1229. going to say no to that so

1230. that I can say yes to

1231. Jesus directing my life if

  1232. I'm going to follow

1233. Jesus I've got to say no

1234. to my perceived right of

  1235. self-preservation so that

1236. I can say yes to Jesus

1237. even if that means I'm

  1238. being exposed to danger

  1239. those who follow Jesus

1240. may they must say no to

  1241. self-glory thinking that

1242. it's all about me so that

1243. they can say yes to Christ's

  1244. glory because it's all

1245. about him you know this

  1246. self-denial boils down to

  1247. we we renounce our

  1248. perceived right to self

  1249. determination so that I

1250. can follow my great God

1251. and King Jesus man this

  1252. hangs Americanized

  1253. Christianity of

  1254. individualism it puts it

  1255. right out the door

1256. so this is what it means

  1257. if you're unwilling to

1258. deny yourself in order to

1259. live for Jesus you can't be

1260. his disciple that's what he

1261. calls us to do you know

1262. what the real question is

1263. is he worth it that's the

1264. real question is this guy who

1265. died 2,000 years ago and was

1266. raised from the dead and

1267. apparently is raining on is

1268. he worth it to deny myself oh

1269. yeah let's keep going the

1270. second command if anyone is

1271. willing to come after me he

1272. must take up his cross daily

1273. he must take up his cross daily

1274. Jesus is just reference his

1275. death he's going to be

1276. crucified and we all know that's

1277. by the cross the cross is a

1278. symbol of death and when we

1279. think of the cross nowadays it is

1280. linked to Jesus death here's what

1281. Jesus is saying we must do you

1282. must identify with Jesus if

1283. you're going to follow him you

1284. must identify with him to the

1285. point that you're going to be

1286. humiliated and put to shame in the

1287. eyes of the world you know how

1288. humiliating it was to be

  1289. crucified on a cross

1290. and notice this is a daily taking

1291. up of the cross it's a daily dying

1292. out of being identified with

1293. Christ we must take up our

1294. crosses daily it's one thing to

1295. deny yourself in order to live for

1296. Christ it's another thing to suffer

1297. the consequences for living for

1298. Christ and that's what Jesus is

1299. getting at here to bear your cross

1300. is what Jesus he's making explicit

1301. that there is a unique suffering

  1302. Christians will experience because

1303. they are living for Christ that they

1304. are being identified with him so

1305. every morning it would be very

1306. appropriate for you to get up and

1307. you say Jesus you're awesome so

1308. therefore I'm going to deny myself in

1309. order that I can live for you and

1310. whatever comes as a consequence for

1311. that let it come because I'm

1312. identifying with you if you're

  1313. unwilling to experience the

1314. humiliation of being identified with

1315. Christ on a daily basis you can't be

1316. his disciple are you willing to be

1317. the butt end of people's jokes because

1318. you're a follower of Jesus are you

1319. willing to be labeled the religious

1320. guy or gal in your family and be

1321. avoided are you willing to lose your

1322. position at work or be overlooked at

1323. work because you are unwilling to look

1324. the other way or somehow be unethical

1325. because you're living for Jesus now

1326. are you willing to be gossiped about and

1327. to be avoided by your neighbors because

1328. they think you're a freak living for

  1329. Jesus

1330. and when it comes to our church are we

1331. willing as a church to suffer the

1332. fallout of being a prophetic voice of

1333. Jesus to this city for this city's good

  1334. are you willing

1335. the question that we end up having to

1336. ask is is Jesus worth it is he worth

  1337. it

1338. the first two commands to follow Jesus

1339. are designed to reorient us off

1340. ourselves you got to die to yourself in

1341. order to live for Jesus and now he

1342. comes and says the two words follow me

1343. follow me if anyone would come after

1344. me he must deny himself take up his

1345. cross daily and command follow me it's a

1346. present tense command which means it has

1347. this sense of ongoing action I am

1348. commanded to continually follow Jesus in

1349. other words not just one time following

1350. Jesus or not just for kind of a spurt of

1351. three months following Jesus if I'm to

1352. follow Jesus I'm to follow him for the

  1353. rest of my life

1354. when you become a disciple of Jesus

1355. Christ you enter the Jesus school he is

1356. our teacher and he teaches us to follow

1357. him in every area of our he gradually makes

1358. us more and more like him next week when

1359. we talk about a disciple is someone who is

1360. saturated with God's word will bring this

1361. out a little bit more but the call here is

1362. to follow him not to follow you you've got to

1363. deny yourself did not deny yourself call is to

1364. follow the crucified risen and reigning Jesus in

1365. every area of your life it means living for him

1366. so is this narrow and hard way of discipleship is it

1367. worth it is it worth it to deny myself daily to take up my

1368. cross daily to follow him daily is it worth it

1369. for those of us who know who Jesus is and we understand what exactly he has done in order

1370. to graciously call him to ourselves to himself oh yeah it's worth it he's the treasure hidden field

1371. he's the pearl of great price

1372. he's the one worthy of our lives

  1373. in verses 24 and 26 after

1374. the invitation and after these three commands we see three crossroads

1375. and what it basically is it's

  1376. Jesus

1377. Jesus lays out two ways to live there there are those who are living for Jesus

1378. and then those who are living for themselves and he says there are three crossroads that we will experience with everyone on the planet

1379. those living for Jesus and those living for themselves they will have very different perspectives on what it means to save your life

1380. whoever would save his life for his sake will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it

1381. in order to follow Jesus

1382. you must say no to a life lived for yourself

1383. in order to live a life

  1384. for Christ

1385. and if you're wondering right now

  1386. well that sounds awful

  1387. it's no loss

  1388. it's all gain

  1389. Jesus is our gain

1390. Jim Elliot said he is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep in order to gain what he cannot lose

1391. the first crossroads is what it means to save your life

1392. those who are living for themselves think that saving your life means living for yourself

1393. and those who are living for Christ know that saving your life means living for Christ

  1394. that's where life is

  1395. the second crossroads is

1396. has anything to do with the world

1397. and I'm just going to skip that and move down to verse 26

1398. the third crossroads of what it means

  1399. of being ashamed

  1400. in this age

1401. if you are living for yourself

1402. you are going to be ashamed

  1403. of Jesus

  1404. and his words

1405. the two are vitally linked

1406. see that in verse 26

1407. for whoever is ashamed of me

1408. and of my words of him

1409. will the son of man be ashamed

1410. when he comes in his glory

1411. and the glory of the father

1412. and of the holy angels

1413. to be ashamed of Jesus

  1414. means to

  1415. disassociate yourself with him

  1416. to deny him

1417. and so if you're living today

1418. and you are disassociating yourself

1419. because you're embarrassed by him

1420. do you know what he says

  1421. when I come back

1422. I'm going to be ashamed of you

1423. I'm going to distance myself from you

1424. I'm going to deny you

1425. but for those of us

1426. who are living for Christ now

1427. we don't need to be ashamed

  1428. we identify ourselves

1429. with him and his word

1430. we are living according to his word

  1431. for his glory

  1432. and so the prospect

  1433. of his coming back

  1434. that doesn't strike

1435. that doesn't strike fear into us

1436. that strikes joy into us

  1437. come Lord Jesus

  1438. come

  1439. we want to hear

  1440. well done

  1441. good and faithful servant

1442. enter the joy of your master

  1443. what this means

1444. is the way that we live

  1445. for Christ now

  1446. it's going to contrast

1447. with the way that people

1448. who are living for themselves now

  1449. and there are eternal

  1450. implications to it

1451. let me conclude by saying this

1452. what does it mean to be a Christian

  1453. in the 21st century

  1454. well you know what

  1455. Jesus hasn't changed

  1456. we may have different

  1457. cultural contexts

  1458. from the 1st century

  1459. to the 21st century

  1460. but Jesus hasn't changed

  1461. and his costly call

  1462. to follow him

  1463. hasn't changed

  1464. it's a corrective for us

  1465. becoming a Christian

  1466. is far more reaching

  1467. than simply asking Jesus

1468. to come into your heart

  1469. to become a Christian

1470. is to have your life

  1471. completely reoriented

  1472. by the costly

  1473. deep grace of Christ

  1474. from living for yourself

  1475. to live for Christ

  1476. so this

1477. here's what this means for us

1478. we got to call people

  1479. to follow Jesus

  1480. as he called people

  1481. to follow Jesus

  1482. we invite them

  1483. to come after him

  1484. who gave himself up

  1485. for them

  1486. and the cost

  1487. is high

  1488. we don't diminish

  1489. the cost

  1490. we make it known

  1491. and let God

  1492. do his work

1493. and what we will see

  1494. as we step out

  1495. in faith

  1496. is that God

  1497. is going to call

  1498. followers to himself

  1499. men and women

  1500. boys and girls

  1501. who are willing

1502. to give it all up

  1503. so that they can

  1504. live for the one

  1505. who paid it all

  1506. it's amazing

  1507. what two words

  1508. can do

  1509. two words

  1510. follow me

  1511. these two words

  1512. must

  1513. radically

  1514. reorient

  1515. our lives

  1516. off of ourselves

  1517. and onto Jesus

  1518. that's where

  1519. true

  1520. life

  1521. is

  1522. let's pray

  1523. Lord Jesus

  1524. you are worthy

  1525. right now

  1526. at the right hand

  1527. of God the Father

  1528. you are surrounded

  1529. by

  1530. elders

  1531. and myriads

  1532. of angels

  1533. and the redeemed

  1534. and they are

  1535. worshiping you

  1536. they are singing

  1537. the glory

  1538. and praise

  1539. that are due

  1540. your name

  1541. Lord Jesus

  1542. we ask

  1543. that you would

  1544. do a work

  1545. in us

  1546. where it's

  1547. our joy

  1548. to deny

  1549. ourselves

  1550. take up

  1551. our cross

  1552. daily

  1553. and follow

  1554. you

  1555. you're worth

  1556. it Lord

  1557. Jesus

  1558. we pray

  1559. this all

  1560. in your name

  1561. amen
