  1. I trust this all to you in Jesus' name. Amen.

  2. Amen. Children, you may be excused.

  3. If you would open up your Bibles to 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  4. we're going to be focusing on verses 16 and 17.

  5. But just to let you know, last week we started a series called 21st Century Disciple.

  6. And what it's geared to do is to help us understand

  7. what it means to be a follower of Jesus at this time and in this place.

  8. And so last week we started with those two words, follow me.

  9. Me being Jesus.

  10. Jesus is God in the flesh, lived a perfect life, crucified on the cross,

  11. raised from the dead, ascended on high, reigning next to the Father,

  12. is going to come back and clean up shop.

  13. That is who the me is.

  14. And then he calls us to follow him.

  15. If you want to follow me, if anyone would come after me,

  16. deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.

  17. And so when you become a follower of Jesus,

  18. yes, you're forgiven of all your sins,

  19. but God radically reorients you off yourself and onto Jesus.

  20. A 21st Century follower of Jesus is someone who is living for Jesus intentionally.

  21. And so this morning, I want to argue for something.

  22. I want to convince you of something.

  23. And my aim this morning, through God's word,

  24. is to show you, if you are going to intentionally live for Jesus Christ,

  25. you must learn how to reorient yourself according to this word.

  26. This is a compass for you.

  27. This gives you direction.

  28. It reveals God to you.

  29. If you want to follow Jesus, you need this book.

  30. You can't live without it.

  31. It's absolutely vital to a follower of Jesus in their pursuit of the Lord Jesus.

  32. And so this morning, I'm going to make a case.

  33. I'm going to point you to a place in the scripture and show you three reasons why you must be prioritizing this book.

  34. If you're in 2 Timothy chapter 3, I'm going to start in verse 10.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  35. I'm going to read all the way through verse 17.

  36. You, Timothy, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness,

  37. my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra,

  38. which persecutions I endured, yet from them all the Lord rescued me.

  39. And all, indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  40. while evil people and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  41. But as for you, Timothy, continue what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  42. knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings,

  43. the Old Testament, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  44. All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable

  45. for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

  46. that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

  47. Tomorrow morning, when you're leaving the house, my guess is, maybe it's an apartment,

  48. maybe it's a tent, but my guess is,

  49. somewhere in the place you live, there's a Bible.

  50. Maybe you're going to come home after church today,

  51. you're going to put your Bible on your kitchen table,

  52. and you're going to forget to put it away,

  53. and tomorrow morning, as you're starting the day,

  54. you're going to see that Bible on your kitchen table.

  55. What are you going to do?

  56. What are you going to do?

  57. That Bible, your Bible, is God-breathed.

  58. It's God's power.

  59. It's not just God's power.

  60. It's profitable.

  61. It is also purposed.

  62. And so this morning, I want to show you the power of God's Word,

  63. the profitability of God's Word,

  64. and the purpose of God's Word,

  65. so that you would live for Jesus.

  66. You ready to dig in?

  67. The power of Scripture.

  68. Do you want to learn a Greek word?

  69. It's in verse 16.

  70. All Scripture is breathed out by God.

  71. The Apostle Paul coined a new word here.

  72. Theopneustos.

  73. You ready?

  74. Let's try it together.

  75. Theopneustos.

  76. It's kind of a weird word.

  77. God-breathed.

  78. All Scripture, God-breathed.

  79. So here's the claim of the Bible.

  80. Every word of H of the 66 books from Genesis to Revelation

  81. originated in the mind of God Himself.

  82. God-breathed.

  83. God-breathed.

  84. I've told you this before.

  85. I am a fan of the Antiques Roadshow.

  86. And I like it when there's this kind of person

  87. who finds this silver goblet up in the anchor,

  88. up in the attic,

  89. and they bring it to the Antiques Roadshow,

  90. and the professional flips it over,

  91. and you know what they're looking for?

  92. The hallmark.

  93. And the hallmark says what that thing is made of,

  94. who made it,

  95. and when it was made.

  96. Theopneustos is the hallmark on this book.

  97. It's from God.

  98. Every word is from Him.

  99. And it originated in His mind,

  100. and He revealed it progressively over the ages.

  101. Do you know what a Bunsen burner is?

  102. Maybe you remember back in school,

  103. you would take some kind of element,

  104. and you put it under a Bunsen burner,

  105. and it would show up in a special kind of light,

  106. and you'd look it up in your book,

  107. and you're like,

  108. oh, that's what this element is.

  109. If you took the original writings

  110. of each book of the Bible,

  111. and from those original manuscripts,

  112. you took them out,

  113. and you put them in a Bunsen burner,

  114. you know what?

  115. You know what it would show?

  116. Theopneustos.

  117. Every word is God's word.

  118. It's a huge claim.

  119. So right now,

  120. do you know what you're holding in your hands?

  121. The very words of God.

  122. Do you know how many people

  123. shed their blood and died for that book?

  124. So people in their own languages

  125. could have it?

  126. It originates in God's mind.

  127. And because it originates in God's mind,

  128. it has intrinsic power

  129. that the very words of God,

  130. Do you remember in Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  131. God spoke and stuff happened.

  132. And so we read,

  133. and God said,

  134. and it was so.

  135. And God said,

  136. and it was so.

  137. And God said,

  138. and it was so.

  139. God said,

  140. let there be light,

  141. and there was light.

  142. That is the effectual power

  143. of God's word.

  144. And you fast forward

  145. into the New Testament

  146. to the God man.

  147. Jesus on a boat

  148. in the Sea of Galilee.

  149. Disciples freaking out.

  150. Jesus, save us, save us.

  151. He stands up,

  152. and he says,

  153. peace, be still.

  154. And it was so.

  155. He's standing outside

  156. the grave of Lazarus

  157. in John 11, 43.

  158. It says,

  159. Lazarus, come out.

  160. Four days after he died.

  161. And it was so.

  162. The power of God's word.

  163. You may remember Hebrews 4, 12.

  164. God's word is living and active.

  165. And it penetrates

  166. like nothing else

  167. all the way down

  168. into the thoughts

  169. and hearts of men and women.

  170. Because this book,

  171. every word of it,

  172. is God's spoken.

  173. It's power,

  174. and it has innate

  175. and final authority.

  176. Because all scriptures

  177. originate in God's mind,

  178. and God never lies,

  179. we can be confident

  180. that whatever

  181. this book addresses,

  182. it addresses

  183. truly and accurately.

  184. We can stand

  185. on this book.

  186. We can build

  187. our lives on it.

  188. This book

  189. claims to be

  190. the very words of God.

  191. So tomorrow morning

  192. when you're leaving

  193. the house

  194. and you see your Bible

  195. on your table,

  196. you know what you're looking at?

  197. God's speaking to you.

  198. God's very words.

  199. This book

  200. is absolutely essential

  201. for you,

  202. follower of Jesus,

  203. to live for Christ

  204. in every area

  205. of your life.

  206. He has set you up

  207. for success.

  208. He's given you

  209. his word.

  210. So we've looked

  211. at the power of scripture.

  212. It's theopneustos.

  213. God's breathed word.

  214. Every one of them.

  215. And now let's talk

  216. about the profitability

  217. of scripture.

  218. We see that

  219. in the very next

  220. two words.

  221. It says,

  222. all scripture

  223. is breathed out

  224. by God

  225. and profitable.

  226. All scripture

  227. is breathed out

  228. by God

  229. and profitable.

  230. Now when you hear

  231. that word profit,

  232. you may be thinking,

  233. you mean making a buck

  234. off the Bible?

  235. Not that kind of profit.

  236. Profitable in the sense

  237. of usefulness.

  238. Effectiveness.

  239. All scriptures

  240. breathe out

  241. by God.

  242. It's powerful.

  243. It's true.

  244. It's our final authority.

  245. And it is

  246. effectual.

  247. It makes stuff happen.

  248. If you look

  249. at the next

  250. four little clauses

  251. you read,

  252. it's profitable

  253. for teaching,

  254. for reproof,

  255. for correction,

  256. and for training

  257. in righteousness.

  258. What is God's word

  259. useful at doing?

  260. Teaching,

  261. reproving,

  262. correcting,

  263. training in righteousness.

  264. And let's ask

  265. the question,

  266. what do those mean?

  267. God's word,

  268. the Bible,

  269. these very words,

  270. sentences,

  271. paragraphs,

  272. and chapters

  273. all together

  274. from beginning

  275. to end.

  276. It's all one book

  277. and it is designed

  278. to instruct you,

  279. to teach you,

  280. to show you

  281. what's true.

  282. It's the content

  283. of biblical truth

  284. and elsewhere

  285. in your Bible

  286. it's described

  287. as doctrine.

  288. Biblical teaching

  289. is doctrine.

  290. And so when you

  291. turn in your Bible

  292. to Titus 2.1

  293. and we read

  294. that Titus,

  295. a young pastor

  296. then was to

  297. teach the sound

  298. doctrine

  299. of the scriptures.

  300. He's talking

  301. about healthy

  302. truth from

  303. the Bible.

  304. The Bible

  305. does the body

  306. good.

  307. It's healthy

  308. for us.

  309. it helps us

  310. to see

  311. what's true.

  312. True about God.

  313. He reveals

  314. himself.

  315. Think about

  316. this book

  317. as the triune

  318. God's selfie

  319. helping you

  320. to see

  321. who he is.

  322. It tells us

  323. about ourselves.

  324. It holds a mirror

  325. up to us

  326. and says

  327. this is who

  328. you truly are.

  329. It tells us

  330. about the world.

  331. It tells us

  332. about how we

  333. are unable

  334. to make ourselves

  335. right with God

  336. and how God

  337. in Christ

  338. offers salvation

  339. to all mankind.

  340. It's in this book.

  341. It teaches us

  342. these things.

  343. The Bible

  344. does the body

  345. good.

  346. But it does

  347. more than that.

  348. It reproves.

  349. Also known

  350. as rebukes.

  351. And the idea

  352. behind that

  353. is the Bible

  354. sheds

  355. a light

  356. onto false

  357. thinking

  358. and false

  359. living.

  360. It exposes

  361. falsehood.

  362. It teaches

  363. truth

  364. and exposes

  365. falsehood.

  366. It points out

  367. the false

  368. teaching

  369. that doesn't

  370. do the body

  371. good.

  372. It does

  373. damage to

  374. the body.

  375. And so

  376. these first

  377. two

  378. ways

  379. that the

  380. Bible

  381. is profitable

  382. have to do

  383. with doctrine.

  384. Have to do

  385. with truth.

  386. Have to do

  387. with creed.

  388. And the last

  389. two

  390. have to do

  391. with conduct.

  392. Have to do

  393. with duty.

  394. Have to do

  395. with lifestyle.

  396. So it's not

  397. just what you

  398. think.

  399. It's how you

  400. live.

  401. The Bible

  402. addresses it

  403. all.

  404. And it seeks

  405. to make the

  406. connection for

  407. us.

  408. Because this

  409. is true.

  410. We live

  411. this way.

  412. And so we

  413. look at

  414. for correction.

  415. correction.

  416. It means to

  417. make something

  418. straight.

  419. I was in

  420. college and I

  421. was playing

  422. pickup football

  423. with some

  424. friends and

  425. one of my

  426. friends broke

  427. his forearm.

  428. So we rushed

  429. him to the

  430. emergency room

  431. and I got to

  432. sit and watch

  433. the emergency

  434. room doctor

  435. kind of work

  436. his forearm

  437. and you could

  438. hear the

  439. splintered bones

  440. kind of rubbing

  441. against each

  442. other.

  443. and then

  444. it clicked.

  445. He set the

  446. brake.

  447. He made it

  448. straight.

  449. It fixed

  450. the problem.

  451. And so what

  452. the Bible is

  453. able to do

  454. according to

  455. the apostle

  456. Paul to

  457. Timothy,

  458. the words of

  459. this book

  460. because they're

  461. God's word

  462. and they're so

  463. profitable,

  464. they can

  465. correct men

  466. and women

  467. who are not

  468. believing truth

  469. and are living

  470. lives that are

  471. destructive and

  472. damaging.

  473. This book is

  474. able to say

  475. no, no, no, no,

  476. no, no, no.

  477. That's not good

  478. for you.

  479. Here is what's

  480. good for you.

  481. Let's correct

  482. that.

  483. It's good for

  484. training in

  485. righteousness.

  486. Think of the

  487. training in

  488. righteousness as

  489. the path of

  490. godliness.

  491. This word

  492. training shows

  493. up in Ephesians

  494. 6, 4 where

  495. fathers are

  496. instructed to

  497. teach and

  498. train their

  499. children in the

  500. fear and

  501. admonition of

  502. the Lord.

  503. So fathers are

  504. to be training

  505. their children

  506. in this book.

  507. But if you

  508. flip back to

  509. the book of

  510. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  511. 13, Hebrews,

  512. excuse me,

  513. chapter 12,

  514. the apostle Paul

  515. is talking about

  516. discipline and

  517. no discipline

  518. feels good at

  519. the time.

  520. It's the same

  521. word as training

  522. here in 2

  523. Timothy 3.

  524. what we read

  525. is this.

  526. For the

  527. moment, all

  528. training,

  529. discipline seems

  530. painful rather

  531. than pleasant,

  532. but later it

  533. yields the

  534. peaceful fruit

  535. of righteousness

  536. to those who've

  537. been trained by

  538. it, to those

  539. who've been

  540. corrected and

  541. directed by

  542. God's word.

  543. You live it

  544. out and it

  545. produces this

  546. fruit of

  547. righteousness, a

  548. harvest of

  549. righteousness.

  550. Same word

  551. what Paul is

  552. talking about

  553. here.

  554. Train us in

  555. righteousness.

  556. So we've got to

  557. ask the question,

  558. what does he

  559. mean by

  560. righteousness?

  561. Well, it's

  562. right there in

  563. the text.

  564. If you look up

  565. just a little

  566. further in

  567. verse 12, we

  568. see indeed all

  569. who desire to

  570. live a godly

  571. life in Christ

  572. Jesus.

  573. That's what he's

  574. talking about.

  575. If you want to

  576. live a godly

  577. life in Christ

  578. Jesus, you need

  579. this book to

  580. tell you what's

  581. true, to help

  582. you understand

  583. when you're

  584. mistaken, to

  585. correct you when

  586. you veer off,

  587. and to train you

  588. in righteousness

  589. in the way of

  590. Jesus over

  591. and over

  592. and over

  593. again.

  594. You need

  595. the book.

  596. Last couple

  597. days when I

  598. was thinking

  599. about preaching

  600. this, I

  601. found myself

  602. saying, man, I

  603. want to bring

  604. this home a

  605. little bit

  606. more.

  607. It sounds

  608. great.

  609. Scripture's

  610. profitable for

  611. teaching, for

  612. reproof, for

  613. correction and

  614. training in

  615. righteousness.

  616. Let me show

  617. you how.

  618. In our

  619. culture, there

  620. are a lot of

  621. different voices on

  622. sexuality right

  623. now.

  624. A lot of

  625. different voices.

  626. What does

  627. God's word

  628. say?

  629. Let me direct

  630. you to that.

  631. What is the

  632. truth?

  633. What is the

  634. teaching of

  635. scripture?

  636. What does God

  637. say to be true

  638. of our

  639. sexuality?

  640. Let me see if I

  641. can find my

  642. notes.

  643. God's word

  644. for the

  645. people.

  646. What does God

  647. say to be true?

  648. What does God

  649. say to be true?

  650. Well, it teaches

  651. us the truth.

  652. In Genesis 1, 27,

  653. God created man in

  654. his own image.

  655. In the image of

  656. God, he created

  657. them.

  658. Male and female,

  659. he created them.

  660. Biologically

  661. gendered.

  662. Male and female,

  663. he created them.

  664. And in Genesis 2,

  665. 24,

  666. therefore, a man

  667. shall leave his

  668. father and his

  669. mother and hold

  670. fast to his wife

  671. and they shall

  672. become one

  673. flesh.

  674. The teaching of

  675. the Bible is,

  676. if you want to be

  677. sexually active,

  678. it's between one

  679. man and one

  680. woman in a

  681. lifelong covenant

  682. of marriage.

  683. That's what the

  684. Bible teaches.

  685. So we read

  686. Hebrews 13, 4,

  687. let marriage be

  688. held in honor

  689. among all and

  690. let the marriage

  691. bed be undefiled.

  692. Don't go outside

  693. of that.

  694. For God will

  695. judge the

  696. sexually immoral

  697. and adulterous.

  698. So the Bible is

  699. very clear in what

  700. it teaches on our

  701. sexuality and how

  702. that sexuality

  703. gets exercised for

  704. the glory of God

  705. and the good of

  706. people.

  707. But then there's

  708. the rebuke.

  709. There are rebukes

  710. throughout the

  711. Bible for people

  712. who are following

  713. God and who

  714. are sexually

  715. sinning against

  716. him and against

  717. others.

  718. The temptation

  719. to sexual sin,

  720. it's a common

  721. temptation to man.

  722. And it's amazing

  723. how much your

  724. Bible addresses it.

  725. God knows how

  726. we're wired.

  727. And so we read

  728. in Ephesians 5,

  729. but sexual

  730. immorality,

  731. any going

  732. outside of the

  733. marriage bed,

  734. in all impurity

  735. or covetousness

  736. must not even

  737. be named

  738. among you

  739. as is proper

  740. among saints.

  741. Don't do that.

  742. Don't buy

  743. the lie

  744. that just because

  745. Jesus forgave you,

  746. you can sow

  747. your wild oats

  748. of sexuality.

  749. The Bible

  750. doesn't condone

  751. that.

  752. That's false

  753. teaching.

  754. It's wrong.

  755. 1 Thessalonians

  756. 4, 3-8,

  757. for this is the

  758. will of God,

  759. your sanctification,

  760. that you abstain

  761. from sexual

  762. immorality.

  763. Don't do it.

  764. No one is to

  765. transgress and wrong

  766. his brother or

  767. sister in this

  768. matter.

  769. That's the rebuke.

  770. Don't do that.

  771. Stop.

  772. You know,

  773. you're going

  774. the wrong way.

  775. And then there's

  776. the correction.

  777. Ephesians 4, 22,

  778. put off your old

  779. self which belongs

  780. to your former

  781. manner of life

  782. and is corrupt

  783. through deceitful

  784. desires and be

  785. renewed in the

  786. spirit of your

  787. minds.

  788. Remember what God

  789. says is true of

  790. you and put on

  791. the new self

  792. created after the

  793. likeness of God

  794. in true righteousness

  795. and holiness.

  796. The way to

  797. correct this is to

  798. remember what God

  799. has done for you

  800. in Jesus.

  801. And so right now

  802. if you're sleeping

  803. around, if you're

  804. looking at places

  805. on the internet

  806. you shouldn't be

  807. looking at, God

  808. says no, no,

  809. don't do that.

  810. But the way you

  811. go is to repent

  812. and turn from

  813. that.

  814. God's commandments

  815. are not burdensome,

  816. 1 John 5, 3.

  817. When he says no,

  818. it is for your

  819. good, brother and

  820. sister.

  821. Don't go there.

  822. Turn from there.

  823. Let him correct you.

  824. Set that right.

  825. Back to 1 Thessalonians

  826. 4, that each one

  827. of you know how to

  828. control his own

  829. body in holiness

  830. and honor.

  831. Not in the passion

  832. of lust like the

  833. Gentiles who do not

  834. know God.

  835. That's what we're

  836. called to do.

  837. We're to say no to

  838. sexual immorality and

  839. we are to govern the

  840. passions of our flesh

  841. in a way that pleases

  842. God.

  843. That's the correction.

  844. And then the training

  845. in righteousness.

  846. I urge you,

  847. brothers, walk in a

  848. manner worthy the

  849. calling to which you've

  850. been called.

  851. Walk it out.

  852. Keep on going.

  853. Live holy lives

  854. pleasing to God.

  855. So if you're not

  856. married, you're called

  857. to abstinence.

  858. But if you are

  859. married, God calls you

  860. to enjoy your spouse

  861. that he has given you.

  862. You see how that works?

  863. Do you see how profitable

  864. God's word is?

  865. It speaks clearly into our

  866. culture.

  867. Clearly into our culture.

  868. Okay.

  869. There's another profound

  870. prophet to the scriptures.

  871. scriptures.

  872. And it's found the verse

  873. before verse 16.

  874. In verse 15, the

  875. apostle Paul is talking

  876. to this pastoral

  877. protege.

  878. How from childhood you've

  879. been acquainted with the

  880. Old Testament, which are

  881. able to make you wise for

  882. salvation through faith in

  883. Christ Jesus.

  884. Do you see the prophet

  885. there?

  886. This book, even the Old

  887. Testament, points us to

  888. Jesus Christ.

  889. The one who would die

  890. for us and the one who

  891. calls us to live for him.

  892. It's not only just the

  893. wisdom of how to get

  894. saved, it's the wisdom of

  895. how to live out your

  896. salvation day to day.

  897. This book is able to do

  898. it.

  899. It profits us.

  900. It reveals salvation to

  901. sinners and how sinners

  902. who become saints live for

  903. the Savior.

  904. Savior.

  905. These God-breathed words in

  906. your hand right now, they

  907. originated from God's mind,

  908. and they are powerful, they're

  909. all authoritative, they're

  910. true, and they profit us.

  911. They teach us, they rebuke us,

  912. correct us, train us to live

  913. for him.

  914. Isn't God kind?

  915. And now let's turn to the

  916. purpose.

  917. You need this book.

  918. If you're going to follow

  919. Jesus, you need this book.

  920. The purpose.

  921. We're in verse 17 now.

  922. 16, again, all scriptures

  923. breed out by God and

  924. profitable for teaching, for

  925. reproof, correction, and for

  926. training in righteousness, that

  927. the man of God may be

  928. complete, equipped for every

  929. good work.

  930. You know what?

  931. When you're reading your

  932. Bible, you can just skip over a

  933. very important word.

  934. And a word like that seems to

  935. be kind of like, you kind of

  936. yawn when you read it.

  937. It's like, oh, there's a that.

  938. But that, that is a very

  939. important that.

  940. It carries this sense of

  941. purpose.

  942. It's pregnant with purpose.

  943. That, that is a purposeful that.

  944. All scriptures breathe out by God

  945. and profitable unto what?

  946. For this purpose, that the man of

  947. God may be complete.

  948. Again, Paul is talking to this

  949. young pastor, Timothy.

  950. He's saying, Paul, or, Timothy, I

  951. got there.

  952. Timothy.

  953. Remember.

  954. I got there.

  955. Remember.

  956. Remember.

  957. The very words of this book are

  958. from God's, God's very being.

  959. It originated in him.

  960. Get it out there.

  961. It's so profitable for the

  962. church.

  963. It will mature the church.

  964. You're going to be able to

  965. present her to Christ someday.

  966. And then he says, so that the man

  967. of God may be complete.

  968. The man of God is a reference back

  969. to Old Testament prophets.

  970. The man of God.

  971. Complete.

  972. That word in the original language

  973. means to be ready for anything.

  974. There are a couple TV shows I like

  975. watching.

  976. One of them is Bear Grylls.

  977. If I got dropped into Siberia and I

  978. could choose anyone in the world who

  979. would have come with me, it would be

  980. the man named Bear.

  981. Bear Grylls was trained by European

  982. special forces.

  983. He is trained to be able to tackle,

  984. overcome anything in the wilderness.

  985. Anything.

  986. So if I got dropped into Siberia, I'm

  987. like, Bear, you're coming with me.

  988. He's like, sure, mate.

  989. And he comes down with me.

  990. He is the complete survivalist.

  991. There's nothing that he could not

  992. overcome.

  993. Weather, terrain, obstacle, injury.

  994. He's the guy you want.

  995. You know what the Bible's teaching

  996. here?

  997. We're in another survival mode.

  998. We're another wilderness.

  999. And God's word makes us ready for

  1000. anything.

  1001. Anything.

1002. It's known as the doctrine of the

  1003. sufficiency of Scripture.

1004. It gives us everything we need for

  1005. life and godliness.

1006. It's better than Bear Grylls to get

  1007. through this life.

1008. The phrase that follows, equipped for

1009. every good work, gives further

1010. explanation to what Paul means by

  1011. complete.

1012. Complete in the sense that Timothy is

1013. ready to take on any good work that

1014. comes his way as a pastor.

  1015. Any good work.

1016. That word equipped described boats and

1017. wagons that were outfitted for a long

  1018. journey.

1019. They got everything they need.

  1020. They're complete.

  1021. They're equipped.

  1022. They will get through.

1023. Think about it this way.

1024. Let's say all of us fly out to the west and

1025. we're going to backpack the Sawtooth

  1026. Mountains together.

1027. And we go to an outfitter and he gives us a

1028. backpack and he drops in there everything we

1029. need for surviving two weeks in the Sawtooth

  1030. Mountains.

  1031. You've been equipped.

1032. Do you know what God has given you to carry with you

  1033. through life?

  1034. This book.

1035. Everything you need for life and godliness.

1036. God offers you through this book.

1037. So you've got to open up.

1038. You've got to see what's in there.

  1039. It's sufficient for you.

1040. I know what you might be thinking right now.

1041. Because I would be thinking it.

  1042. Something like this.

  1043. I could be wrong.

  1044. But Mike, you're a professional pastor.

  1045. You're pulpit guy.

1046. Of course you're equipped in the word.

1047. I mean, Paul is talking to Timothy, another pastor.

1048. Pastors need to get equipped with God's word.

  1049. Pastors need that.

1050. Pastors need kind of backpacks in order to be

1051. equipped to lead God's people into following Jesus.

  1052. That is absolutely true.

1053. But what about the people in the pew?

1054. Do you know what's in that every good work that

1055. Timothy needs to be equipped for?

1056. Flip back in your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 4, 11, and 12.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

1057. And God gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, teachers, the pastors,

  1058. to do what?

  1059. Purpose clause.

1060. To equip the saints for the work of ministry.

1061. That word equip has the same root as the word equipped here in 2 Timothy 3.

1062. And it's got the same root as being made complete just a phrase before.

  1063. Here's what this means.

1064. God in his design of things says,

1065. pastors, leaders in the church, you need to be equipped with God's word so that you can equip God's people to do the good works of ministry I've given them to do.

1066. So my equipping means your equipping.

1067. And your equipping means goodness to everybody.

  1068. God's goodness.

1069. So deacons need to be equipped.

1070. Sunday school, life group leaders, king's place.

1071. Spouses, husbands, you need to be equipped in loving your wife as Christ loved the church.

1072. Wives, you need to be equipped in submitting to your husbands as the church submitted to Christ.

1073. These are good things God has for you.

1074. Parents, you need to be equipped in how to train up your children in the fear and the admonition of the Lord.

  1075. You need God's Bible.

1076. You need to know how to use that when it comes to teaching and reproving and for correcting and for training your children.

1077. If you called one of the pastors from our church in every time you had a teaching moment with your children,

  1078. we'd have a problem.

1079. But you are able to do that.

1080. Employees, you need to be equipped with God's word in knowing how to live for Jesus in the marketplace.

1081. As citizens of Kenosha, Wisconsin, the United States,

1082. we need to be equipped with God's word in order how to navigate being citizens in the culture we're in.

1083. This book gives us everything we need for life and godliness.

  1084. It produces it.

  1085. That's its aim.

  1086. It matures us.

1087. It's what presents us mature.

  1088. Okay.

1089. We so far have looked at the power of the scriptures.

  1090. Theopneustos.

  1091. It's God breathed.

1092. We've looked at the profitability of scripture.

  1093. It gets stuff done.

  1094. Good stuff done.

1095. And now we've looked at the purpose of it.

1096. It's designed to equip pastors and saints in order to do the good works God has called us to do.

1097. And now I want to close by talking about our posture and pursuit of the very words of God.

  1098. Seven things.

  1099. I'll be quick.

1100. Tomorrow morning when you're walking by your kitchen table and you see God's word on the table,

1101. don't walk away from it.

  1102. Draw near to it.

  1103. Prioritize the Bible.

1104. You want to hear how Jesus prioritized it?

1105. Remember Matthew 4 is being tempted by the devil.

  1106. Jesus is able.

1107. He lived the life that none of us could.

1108. The devil's tempting him and Jesus says,

1109. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  1110. You need it.

  1111. You need it.

1112. If you want to follow Jesus, you need the book.

1113. You need his words functioning in your life to help you follow him.

  1114. Here's what this means.

1115. Here's what it means for me.

  1116. I'm an early riser.

1117. I'm getting earlier as I get older.

1118. I call it old man disease.

  1119. My dad's got it.

1120. But here's what this means for me.

1121. When I wake up, I'm making a beeline to my Bible.

  1122. I don't eat anything.

  1123. I don't get my paper.

  1124. I don't check my smartphone.

1125. I'm beelining to my Bible.

1126. I've got to prioritize it.

1127. It's going to give me something more important than my yogurt with all that good stuff for my gut.

  1128. It's better than that.

1129. I'm going to get in my Bible before I go to the YMCA and exercise my muscles.

  1130. Do you know why?

1131. Physical training is of some value.

1132. But this book gives godliness that is effective in all areas.

1133. This is the stuff that sets us apart.

1134. You know what happens when Kenosha wakes up in the morning?

1135. Everybody says, time to go to work.

1136. It's time to do this.

  1137. Time to do this.

1138. And what happens if there's 200 of us that were saying, oh man, I'm making a beeline to my Bible.

1139. I'm making a beeline to my Bible because this matters more than anything.

1140. It's God speaking to me.

1141. And so draw near to it.

1142. You've got to prioritize it.

  1143. Time, place, plan.

1144. I'll come back to that in a second.

1145. The second thing is when you approach your Bible, don't come over it.

1146. Don't pull a Thomas Jefferson who snipped out half of the Greek New Testament to make it fit what he wanted to fit.

1147. We don't stand over the Bible and tell it what we want us to believe, what we want to believe.

1148. We come under the Bible.

1149. We say, God, you say what we need to hear and we'll trust it.

  1150. There is this.

1151. It's one of my favorite verses in the Bible.

1152. Isaiah 66, 2b, the second half of it.

  1153. Listen.

  1154. This is God speaking.

1155. But this is the one to whom I'll look.

  1156. This is God speaking.

1157. This is the one that catches my attention.

1158. This is the one that stands out.

1159. This is the one that I see and move towards.

1160. But this is the one to whom I'll look.

1161. He who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.

  1162. God opposes the proud.

1163. God, boy, does he give grace to the humble.

1164. When you move to him, move to his word, you come under his word.

1165. And you're like, oh, God, I am here to meet with you.

  1166. Speak to me.

1167. Incline my heart to your testimonies and not to selfish gain.

1168. Open my eyes that I may behold wonderful things from your law.

1169. Unite my heart to fear your name.

1170. Satisfy me this morning with your book, God.

  1171. You come humble.

  1172. You come asking.

1173. You come desperate and dependent.

1174. That's how you approach the word.

1175. You know what happens in a Christian's life when they approach the word like that day after day, week after week, month after month?

1176. You know what God does?

1177. He forms Christ in them.

  1178. He produces godliness.

1179. You're the kind of person that when you come, they're like, you're kind of like glowing.

  1180. Bible glow.

  1181. Draw near.

  1182. Come under.

  1183. Three.

  1184. Take it in.

  1185. Take it in.

1186. Like a tree planted by streams of water, you suck up the streams of God's word.

1187. You savor it and meditate on it.

1188. You listen to it preached.

  1189. You read it.

  1190. You meditate.

  1191. You memorize it.

  1192. You even sing it.

1193. You get it in you.

1194. However you can get it in, get it in you.

1195. You want to saturate yourself with the Bible.

1196. It's like a saturated sponge that if you squeeze it, all this Bible comes out.

  1197. That's what you want.

1198. You want to be saturating your life with God's word.

1199. And when you take it in, it goes down deep.

1200. Let it do its work.

1201. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

1202. There are going to be times when you open up your Bible and you're going to read something.

1203. Fathers, do not exasperate your children.

1204. And you're like, oh, man.

1205. I just ripped my daughter.

1206. I got angry with her.

1207. And that is so convicting.

1208. God is doing a work through his word in you.

  1209. You're moving towards it.

  1210. That's good.

1211. Or maybe you're kind of reading the scriptures and you're going through a hard time in life.

1212. And you come across a psalm that is like Psalm 62 or Psalm 121.

1213. And it is a balm to your soul.

1214. It is just what God had for you.

  1215. He comforts you.

1216. Or maybe there is this other situation where you're taking in God's word and you've got a meeting that day.

1217. Or you have a hard conversation with someone you care about.

1218. Or there's something that's scaring you and you're afraid of it.

1219. And you read something in God's word that says, do not be afraid.

  1220. I'm with you.

  1221. Be not dismayed.

  1222. I'm your God, Mike.

  1223. You go.

1224. And he puts courage in your heart.

1225. So you take it in.

  1226. You draw near.

  1227. You come under.

  1228. You take it in.

1229. And then when you take it in.

  1230. And he convicts you.

  1231. And he comforts you.

  1232. And he encourages you.

1233. You go to your God.

  1234. You commune with him.

1235. Oh God, I am so sorry for yelling at my kid again.

  1236. Will you forgive me?

1237. And would you make me right?

1238. Would you correct me and train me in the way that you want me to go?

1239. Oh God, thank you for this comforting word.

1240. It was just water to my dry soul.

1241. God, thank you for the word of encouragement.

1242. Now I can press in in faith.

  1243. Draw near to me.

1244. And I'll draw near to you.

  1245. Communion with your God.

  1246. That's number four.

1247. Number five, build your life on it.

1248. Build your life on it.

1249. When you encounter the truth of God's word,

  1250. don't ignore it.

1251. Build your life on it.

1252. Do you remember in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

1253. Jesus, after the Sermon on the Mount,

1254. he wraps it up by saying,

1255. everyone then who hears these words of mine,

1256. the Sermon on the Mount,

1257. and does them will be like a wise man

1258. who built his house on the rock,

  1259. a sure foundation.

1260. And when things go crazy, the house stands.

1261. But if you don't take Jesus' words to heart,

1262. you don't build your life on them,

1263. you're going to build your life on something still,

1264. and it's going to be sand.

1265. And when the storms come,

1266. it will level your life.

1267. You build on these words.

  1268. That's five.

  1269. Six.

  1270. You live it out.

  1271. You build on it,

1272. and then you live it out.

  1273. Remember Matthew 28?

  1274. He said,

1275. Go make disciples of the nations,

1276. teaching them to observe all that I commanded.

  1277. He teaches us,

  1278. gives us truth,

1279. so that we put it in play.

  1280. James says it,

1281. But be doers of the word,

  1282. and not hearers only,

  1283. deceiving yourself.

  1284. Do the word.

1285. Psalm 119 says it this way,

1286. When I think on my ways,

1287. I turn my feet to your testimonies.

1288. I hasten and do not delay

  1289. to keep your commandments.

1290. Do you feel the impulse there?

  1291. 1 John 5, 3.

1292. For this is the love of God,

1293. that one keeps his commandments,

1294. and his commandments are not burdensome.

1295. Do you know how we love God?

  1296. By obeying his word.

1297. Oh, Lord Jesus, I'm going to do this

  1298. because I love you.

1299. I'm going to follow you.

  1300. Live it out.

  1301. Live it out.

1302. Live it out in community.

1303. Live it out in your life groups.

1304. Live it out in your family.

  1305. Take and give.

  1306. Number seven.

  1307. Last one.

  1308. Take and give.

  1309. You take it in.

  1310. You will benefit.

1311. You will sense God reviving your soul,

  1312. having you affect,

  1313. giving you strength,

1314. showing you the way to walk.

1315. Take it and give it.

  1316. Take it.

  1317. Give it.

1318. Don't just hold on to it.

1319. Don't encourage other people with it.

1320. We see this at work in Colossians 3.16.

1321. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, church,

1322. teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

1323. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs

1324. with thankfulness in your heart to God.

1325. Could you imagine our life groups

1326. where brothers and sisters are coming together

  1327. and, oh, man,

1328. here's how God encouraged me this morning.

1329. Here's how God convicted me this morning.

1330. Here's how God comforted me this morning.

  1331. Here's what's going to happen.

  1332. There will be times

1333. when you're going to get a word from God in the morning

  1334. from the Psalms

  1335. and you're like, man,

1336. I don't know who this is for.

1337. You go to your life group that night.

1338. You have a brother or sister who comes in need

1339. and you're like, this was for them.

  1340. This was for them.

  1341. Brother, here's Psalm 62.

1342. I'm so sorry you're in this heart,

1343. but here is God's kindness to you.

1344. God gave me this for you.

  1345. Take it and give.

  1346. Ephesians 6.4.

1347. Fathers, take in God's word

1348. so you can give it to your children.

1349. I am an advocate of the King Penguin approach

  1350. to family devotions.

  1351. I take in God's Bible,

  1352. I digest it,

1353. and then I regurgitate it on my family.

  1354. That's what I do.

  1355. It's effective for me.

1356. I'm not sure in my family.

  1357. It's like,

1358. one of my favorite things to say to my kids is,

1359. do you know what I read this morning in my Bible?

1360. I love telling them that.

1361. This is what your daddy read in the Bible.

  1362. Your daddy's taking,

1363. you're coming under the word,

  1364. taking it in,

1365. and he's got goodness for you.

  1366. And of course, 2 Timothy 4.2,

  1367. Paul says to Timothy,

1368. hey, all scripture's breathed out by God.

  1369. It's powerful.

  1370. It's profitable.

1371. It will produce a man of God

1372. equipped for every good work.

  1373. So Timothy,

  1374. preach the word,

  1375. 2 Timothy 4.2.

  1376. Make it known.

  1377. Declare it.

1378. Declare the life-giving truth of God's word.

1379. I'm going to wrap this up,

1380. but I can imagine some of you are in here,

  1381. you're asking the question,

  1382. okay,

  1383. you made the case.

  1384. God's word is powerful,

  1385. profitable,

  1386. profitable,

  1387. and it produces maturity

  1388. and being equipped.

  1389. I want in,

1390. but you don't know where to start.

  1391. Come on down afterwards.

1392. I'd love to talk to you about that.

1393. I can show you how to do that.

1394. I'd love to equip you that way.

1395. There are other pastors and elders

1396. who would love to equip you in that.

  1397. God's word is powerful.

1398. I want to do that.

1399. This morning we've looked at

  1400. the God-breathed words,

1401. powerful words of the Bible.

  1402. They're profitable.

  1403. They're purposed.

1404. If you want to intentionally live for Jesus,

1405. don't walk by your Bibles.

  1406. Get into your Bibles.

  1407. Let's pray.

  1408. God in heaven,

1409. we are so thankful for this book

  1410. in our own language,

1411. and many of us have like 12.

1412. God, would you press the words,

  1413. your words,

1414. into the depths of our being,

1415. and would you make us like Jesus,

1416. and would you compel us

1417. to live for him individually

  1418. and as a church.

  1419. God, reform us,

1420. your people, with your word

  1421. and revive us,

1422. your people, with your spirit.

1423. God, would you do a work

1424. for the glory of your name

  1425. in and through us.

  1426. In Jesus' name, amen.
