  1. Father in heaven,

  2. we would come before you now

  3. and that we would ask that

  4. your name would be hallowed

  5. and that your will would be done

  6. on earth as it is in heaven.

  7. Father, would you now pour out your spirit

  8. upon us, your people,

  9. in this congregation

  10. and would you give us eyes

  11. to see the risen Jesus

  12. through this eyewitness account of John.

  13. It's in your name we pray.

  14. Amen.

  15. Amen.

  16. Well, a week ago I had my vision tested

  17. and as part of having my vision tested,

  18. I knew that there was going to be

  19. a particular test in that big test

  20. that is a point of challenge for me.

  21. The colorblind test.

  22. I was seated in front of 12 circles,

  23. four rows of three.

  24. Each circle was comprised of smaller circles

  25. of varying colors and shades

  26. and apparently there are numbers

  27. you can see in those circles.

  28. So the aid helping me

  29. starts circle one.

  30. Well, what do you see?

  31. I don't see anything.

  32. Oh, what do you see there?

  33. I don't see anything.

  34. Next circle, nothing.

  35. Next circle, nope.

  36. Nope.

  37. Nope.

  38. I think I see a six.

  39. Nope, nope, nope, nope.

  40. Three, seven, nope.

  41. So I turned to her and I said,

  42. would you just tell me?

  43. I can't see.

  44. I'm colorblind.

  45. I can't see.

  46. Tell me the numbers.

  47. So she walked me through.

  48. Four, 14, 27, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

  49. And I believed.

  50. I believed.

  51. I couldn't see it.

  52. I turned to my eyewitness friend

  53. and she said, there they are.

  54. And I believed without seeing.

  55. My eyes didn't need to see the numbers

  56. to believe that they were there.

  57. This morning, we're not gathered

  58. to talk about a colorblind test.

  59. This morning, we've gathered together

  60. to see and believe the risen Jesus.

  61. He is risen.

  62. He's risen indeed.

  63. And I doubt that any of us in this room

  64. have actually laid physical eyes

  65. upon the risen Christ.

  66. But does that mean that Jesus is not alive?

  67. If there's anything that my vision test shows,

  68. it's you don't have to see something

  69. with your own eyes to know it's real.

  70. This morning, I'm going to show you

  71. a eyewitness account from the Gospel of John.

  72. And if you want to start turning your Bibles there,

  73. please feel free.

  74. You've got Bibles before you in the pews.

  75. John is the fourth book of the New Testament.

  76. It's the fourth Gospel.

  77. When it comes to seeing and believing

  78. in the resurrection of Jesus,

  79. we're actually dependent on someone else's eyewitness.

  80. Someone else who saw Jesus

  81. after he was crucified and raised from the dead.

  82. And the eyewitness account that we're going to look at

  83. is the account of John,

  84. one of his longtime followers.

  85. Now, you know what an eyewitness account is, right?

  86. It's like when there's an accident on 60th and Sheridan,

  87. and you're there, you see it,

  88. the police officer come,

  89. then they take a police report of your eyewitness account

  90. of what took place.

  91. You were there, you saw it.

  92. And this morning, we're going to look at the eyewitness account

  93. of the Gospel of John, John's account.

  94. He was there, he saw it.

  95. And he shares it with us

  96. so that we can believe

  97. that Jesus is raised from the dead.

  98. And so my aim this morning

  99. is not to convince you

  100. that the Gospel of John

  101. is a reliable account

  102. of the resurrection of Jesus.

  103. My aim this morning

  104. is to show you what John shows us

  105. so that you would believe that Jesus is risen.

  106. That's my goal this morning.

  107. And here's how he's going to do it.

  108. In John chapter 20,

    John 20 chapter mention

  109. he starts in verses 1 through 10,

  110. and he shows us the empty tomb.

  111. And then for the rest of the chapter,

  112. he's going to show us

  113. three transformational events.

  114. People who encounter the risen Jesus,

  115. and their lives are changed.

  116. And so what John shows us

  117. is the tomb is empty

  118. because Jesus is alive,

  119. and Jesus changes people's lives.

  120. Here's what's riding on all this.

  121. What you believe about Jesus

  122. is really important.

  123. And what you believe about his resurrection

  124. is very important.

  125. If Jesus wasn't raised from the dead,

  126. he is not who he claimed to be,

  127. and the work that he did on the cross,

  128. what we just kind of brought to mind,

  129. how is that supposed to have accomplished anything

  130. if he wasn't raised from the dead?

  131. Let alone the fact that we have no hope of life after death.

  132. But if Jesus was raised from the dead,

  133. it actually proves that he was God in the flesh,

  134. that his payment for sin was effectual,

  135. it accomplished what he sought to do with it,

  136. and that he is alive today.

  137. So let's look at this empty tomb in verses 1 through 10.

  138. I'll just read it for you.

  139. Now on the first day of the week,

  140. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early

  141. while it was still dark

  142. and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  143. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple.

  144. The other disciple is John, the writer of the gospel.

  145. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and John,

  146. the one whom Jesus loved,

  147. and said to them,

  148. They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,

  149. and we do not know where they have laid him.

  150. So Peter went out with the other disciple,

  151. and they were both going toward the tomb.

  152. Both of them were running together,

  153. but the other disciple, John, outran Peter

  154. and reached the tomb first.

  155. And stooping to look in,

  156. he saw the linen clothes lying there,

  157. cloths lying there,

  158. but he did not go in.

  159. Then Simon Peter came following him

  160. and went into the tomb.

  161. He saw the linen cloths lying there

  162. and the face cloth,

  163. which had been on Jesus' head,

  164. not lying with the linen cloths,

  165. but folded up in a place by itself.

  166. Then the other disciple, John,

  167. who had reached the tomb first,

  168. also went in,

  169. and he saw and believed.

  170. For as yet,

  171. they did not understand the scripture,

  172. that he, Jesus,

  173. must rise from the dead.

  174. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

  175. Here's John's eyewitness account

  176. of what happened that first Easter Sunday.

  177. Before dawn,

  178. this would have been most likely Sunday,

  179. April 5th, 33 A.D.

  180. A real time, a real day.

  181. Before dawn, it's still dark.

  182. Mary Magdalene,

  183. one of Jesus' female followers,

  184. she arrives at the tomb

  185. to finish preparing Jesus' body for burial.

  186. So there's a little backstory right there.

  187. Two days earlier,

  188. Jesus had been crucified

  189. on a Roman cross outside of Jerusalem.

  190. And while Jesus,

  191. his last words that he said there,

  192. it is finished,

  193. he was speaking about the work

  194. that he had done on the cross.

  195. Mary Magdalene was there.

  196. She witnessed his crucifixion,

  197. his death,

  198. and his burial.

  199. Because she followed

  200. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus

  201. to Joseph's newly hewn-out tomb

  202. in the limestone outside of Jerusalem.

  203. And she followed them there

  204. and watched them put Jesus'

  205. linen-shrouded body into that tomb

  206. and then roll this huge stone

  207. in front of the tomb entrance.

  208. She saw it.

  209. She had the tomb address,

  210. you could say.

  211. And so it's on the first day

  212. of the week.

  213. It's Sunday.

  214. Three days following

  215. that first Good Friday.

  216. And when Mary arrives

  217. in the dark,

  218. she notices right away

  219. that this huge stone

  220. had been taken away,

  221. verse 1.

  222. She must have looked in.

  223. Because when she runs

  224. and tells Simon, Peter, and John

  225. that the body has been taken away,

  226. she must have looked in

  227. to know that it had been removed.

  228. And she tells them

  229. that someone must have taken his body

  230. and placed him somewhere else

  231. unknown to them.

  232. And right there,

  233. what you see is that

  234. she's not thinking resurrection.

  235. She's not thinking

  236. that he's been raised from the dead.

  237. She's thinking that

  238. his body's been misplaced.

  239. So upon hearing Mary's report,

  240. Peter and John,

  241. foot race to the tomb,

  242. verses 3 and 4.

  243. John arrives first

  244. because he's younger than Peter.

  245. And when John arrives,

  246. he stoops in the tomb

  247. and he looks down into the tomb.

  248. It's like looking down

  249. into a shallow cellar

  250. of a basement.

  251. He looks down

  252. and sees the linen burial cloths

  253. that had enshrouded Jesus' body

  254. lying there.

  255. And they're missing something.

  256. I'm not naming any names,

  257. but sometimes in our family,

  258. there's this towel

  259. that shows up

  260. in the middle of our bathroom

  261. with no body in it.

  262. It's this empty towel

  263. and you touch it

  264. and it's a little damp.

  265. What's going on?

  266. Not naming any names.

  267. But when John looks in

  268. and sees these burial linens,

  269. something's out of place.

  270. We've got a missing body.

  271. These burial linens

  272. were missing the very person

  273. that had been enshrouded by them

  274. two days earlier.

  275. And it gives John pause.

  276. So much so,

  277. he doesn't go into the tomb.

  278. He's just looking in.

  279. And here's what I want to put

  280. into your brain.

  281. Something's going on

  282. in John at this moment.

  283. Something is being brought

  284. to his mind

  285. at this moment.

  286. He arrived at the tomb

  287. and his heart was pumping

  288. and his heart starts going,

  289. the heart rate starts going down

  290. and then he sees

  291. these burial linens

  292. and his heart rate

  293. is starting to go up

  294. because something is going on

  295. in his mind.

  296. Something related

  297. to the Old Testament.

  298. But we'll come back

  299. to that in a second

  300. because Peter arrives.

  301. He arrives huffing and puffing

  302. that old man

  303. and in classic Peter style,

  304. he just goes right

  305. into the tomb.

  306. Right in.

  307. And he too sees

  308. the burial linen lying there.

  309. But what John tells us,

  310. he also sees

  311. the linen face cloth

  312. that was over Jesus'

  313. dead head.

  314. It was separate

  315. from the linen cloths

  316. that covered his body.

  317. And what Joseph,

  318. what John is very clear

  319. in pointing out

  320. is that this linen face cloth

  321. was not thrown

  322. on the floor.

  323. It was folded up.

  324. You know,

  325. after you wash your face

  326. with a washcloth,

  327. you kind of fold it up

  328. and put it on your sink.

  329. Very intentional.

  330. It's folded up.

  331. Someone left

  332. the burial linens.

  333. Someone folded up

  334. this face cloth.

  335. And if you were going

  336. to be stealing

  337. Jesus' body,

  338. I'm guessing

  339. you're not going

  340. to take the time

  341. to fold up

  342. his face cloth.

  343. You're going to throw it

  344. on the floor

  345. or keep it on his head.

  346. So,

  347. at this point,

  348. John in verse 8

  349. now enters the tomb.

  350. He sees the empty tomb.

  351. He sees the empty

  352. burial linens.

  353. He sees the folded up

  354. face cloth.

  355. And at the end

  356. of verse 8,

  357. we see these words,

  358. John saw

  359. and believed.

  360. And we have a very

  361. important question

  362. we need to answer

  363. right now.

  364. What did he believe?

  365. What was he believing?

  366. Well, in verse 9,

  367. we're told,

  368. for as yet,

  369. they did not understand

  370. the scripture

  371. that he must

  372. rise from the dead.

  373. He believes

  374. that Jesus

  375. has been raised

  376. from the dead.

  377. Because what has

  378. come to his mind

  379. is the Old Testament

  380. scripture

  381. in new,

  382. pronounced,

  383. powerful way.

  384. If you flip

  385. in your Bible

  386. back to

  387. Psalm 16,

    Psalms 16:10

  388. verse 10,

  389. this may have

  390. been the scripture

  391. that had come

  392. to his mind

  393. and that

  394. stirred his belief

  395. that Jesus

  396. has been raised

  397. from the dead.

  398. This verse,

  399. I'm going to read you,

  400. this verse

  401. was proclaimed

  402. by Peter

  403. and the apostle

  404. Paul

  405. when they would

  406. preach

  407. and that they

  408. would give

  409. an Old Testament

  410. basis for the

  411. resurrection of

  412. Jesus.

  413. For you will not

  414. abandon my soul

  415. to Sheol

  416. or let your

  417. holy ones see

  418. corruption.

  419. And of course,

  420. the holy one of all,

  421. the greatest of all

  422. holy ones is Jesus.

  423. You will not see

  424. corruption.

  425. Was this

  426. the verse

  427. that God

  428. had used

  429. in John's

  430. mind

  431. to stir

  432. belief

  433. when he sees

  434. the empty tomb?

  435. It could have been.

  436. It could have been

  437. Isaiah 53, 10

  438. where the suffering

  439. servant is buried

  440. in a grave

  441. of a rich man

  442. and then afterwards

  443. he lives,

  444. goes on living,

  445. raised from the dead.

  446. These are different

  447. passages that

  448. the Old Testament

  449. points to

  450. not just the

  451. Messiah dying

  452. but the Messiah

  453. necessarily being

  454. raised from the dead.

  455. So here's what

  456. we see happening.

  457. Here's this

  458. eyewitness account

  459. of an empty tomb

  460. and what John

  461. is telling us

  462. is that this

  463. tomb is not

  464. empty on

  465. accident.

  466. It's purposefully

  467. empty.

  468. It's the

  469. fulfillment of

  470. the Old Testament

  471. scriptures.

  472. That's one reason

  473. why it was empty.

  474. It had to be

  475. to fulfill

  476. the Old Testament.

  477. Another reason

  478. is that

  479. the resurrection

  480. had to happen

  481. in order to

  482. demonstrate that

  483. Christ's one time

  484. payment for sin

  485. was accepted

  486. and received

  487. by God

  488. a holy God.

  489. This past week

  490. I ordered a book

  491. from Amazon.

  492. Anybody ever

  493. order a book

  494. from Amazon?

  495. It was a book

  496. on the gospel,

  497. the life of Jesus

  498. and how that's

  499. essential to

  500. every Christian

  501. and as soon

  502. as I ordered

  503. it I clicked

  504. that little button

  505. that place order

  506. bing

  507. three seconds

  508. later

  509. my emails

  510. dinged

  511. from Amazon

  512. the confirmation

  513. email

  514. payment received

  515. what happens

  516. on Good Friday

  517. is payment

  518. made

  519. what happens

  520. on Easter Sunday

  521. is payment

  522. received

  523. Christ's payment

  524. for sin

  525. was accepted

  526. by a holy God

  527. and that

  528. opens

  529. wide the door

  530. for all sinners

  531. to come

  532. and receive

  533. forgiveness

  534. of sins

  535. through what

  536. Jesus has

  537. accomplished

  538. he is a

  539. living savior

  540. and sins

  541. are washed

  542. clean

  543. this is an

  544. empty tomb

  545. but it's

  546. speaking loud

  547. and so upon

  548. seeing the

  549. empty tomb

  550. John believed

  551. that Jesus

  552. had been raised

  553. from the dead

  554. because his

  555. bible is making

  556. sense in a new

  557. way

  558. and I just

  559. want to point

  560. out the obvious

  561. he's not

  562. looking at

  563. the resurrected

  564. Jesus right

  565. now

  566. he's standing

  567. in an empty

  568. tomb

  569. believing that

  570. Jesus has been

  571. raised

  572. because he's

  573. thinking about

  574. his bible

  575. in a new

  576. way

  577. if John

  578. is any

  579. indicator

  580. someone does

  581. not have to

  582. visibly see

  583. the risen

  584. Jesus

  585. in order to

  586. believe that

  587. he's been

  588. raised from

  589. the dead

  590. you just need

  591. to know

  592. your bible

  593. it's a

  594. supernatural

  595. revelation

  596. okay

  597. we've seen

  598. the empty

  599. tomb

  600. John's

  601. making an

  602. eyewitness

  603. case

  604. now he's

  605. going to

  606. move us

  607. to

  608. some

  609. very

  610. interesting

  611. encounters

  612. and what

  613. these

  614. encounters

  615. demonstrate

  616. is why

  617. the empty

  618. tomb

  619. is empty

  620. the empty

  621. tomb

  622. is empty

  623. because

  624. Jesus

  625. is alive

  626. and he's

  627. changing

  628. people's

  629. lives

  630. so the

  631. first

  632. transformational

  633. risen

  634. Jesus

  635. sighting

  636. it's

  637. almost

  638. like

  639. if you

  640. were in

  641. the

  642. northwest

  643. and you're

  644. like

  645. okay

  646. bigfoot

  647. sighting

  648. I saw

  649. him

  650. we don't

  651. know it's

  652. true or

  653. not

  654. John

  655. provides us

  656. with some

  657. risen

  658. Jesus

  659. sightings

  660. of people

  661. real people

  662. who had a

  663. real encounter

  664. with the

  665. risen Christ

  666. and they

  667. were really

  668. changed

  669. so the

  670. first story

  671. first account

  672. is with

  673. Mary

  674. Mary Magdalene

  675. and I'm

  676. just going to

  677. breeze through

  678. these

  679. this is in

  680. verses

  681. 11

  682. through 18

  683. what we see

  684. happen here

  685. is that

  686. Mary's

  687. weeping

  688. outside

  689. the tomb

  690. where Jesus

  691. was laid

  692. she stoops

  693. down

  694. she looks

  695. in the tomb

  696. there are

  697. two angels

  698. there

  699. and the

  700. angels

  701. are like

  702. woman

  703. why are

  704. you weeping

  705. he's not

  706. here

  707. it doesn't

  708. even strike

  709. her that

  710. two angels

  711. are in

  712. this tomb

  713. because she

  714. turns around

  715. and when she

  716. turns around

  717. there is

  718. Jesus

  719. standing

  720. before her

  721. but she

  722. doesn't

  723. recognize him

  724. in fact

  725. he then

  726. asks her

  727. woman

  728. why are

  729. you weeping

  730. and then

  731. in great

  732. irony

  733. he asks

  734. her

  735. in verse

  736. 15

  737. whom are

  738. you seeking

  739. so

  740. don't

  741. miss

  742. that

  743. Mary

  744. is

  745. distraught

  746. the one

  747. that she

  748. had been

  749. living for

  750. for the

  751. last three

  752. years

  753. she just

  754. witnessed

  755. crucified

  756. her

  757. the guy

  758. that he

  759. was she

  760. was living

  761. for is

  762. gone

  763. and now

  764. she just

  765. wants to

  766. finish

  767. preparing

  768. his body

  769. and now

  770. his body

  771. is gone

  772. it's gone

  773. from bad

  774. to worse

  775. she just

  776. wants to

  777. know where

  778. the body

  779. is

  780. and so

  781. she's

  782. seeking

  783. the body

  784. of Jesus

  785. she turns

  786. around

  787. and there's

  788. the risen

  789. Christ

  790. who she

  791. doesn't

  792. recognize

  793. asking her

  794. who are you

  795. looking for

  796. and she

  797. thinks he's

  798. the gardener

  799. sir if you

  800. have carried

  801. him away

  802. tell me

  803. where you

  804. have laid

  805. him

  806. and I

  807. will take

  808. him away

  809. verse 15

  810. and then

  811. Jesus

  812. says

  813. he says

  814. to her

  815. Mary

  816. Mary

  817. and instantly

  818. she has

  819. eyes to

  820. see

  821. and she

  822. exclaims

  823. in verse

  824. 60

  825. in Aramaic

  826. Rabboni

  827. which is a

  828. term of

  829. affection for

  830. a teacher

  831. Rabboni

  832. and so she

  833. must have

  834. reached out

  835. to cling

  836. to him

  837. because in

  838. verse 17

  839. he's like

  840. whoa

  841. whoa

  842. whoa

  843. don't cling

  844. to me

  845. yet

  846. I've

  847. not yet

  848. ascended

  849. to my

  850. father

  851. but what

  852. we see

  853. happening

  854. in this

  855. account

  856. is this

  857. we have

  858. a distraught

  859. weeping

  860. Mary

  861. that once

  862. she sees

  863. and recognizes

  864. the risen

  865. Jesus

  866. she is

  867. profoundly

  868. changed

  869. her weeping

  870. turns to

  871. worship

  872. do you see

  873. it

  874. she encounters

  875. the risen

  876. Jesus

  877. and she's

  878. changed

  879. and what

  880. John is

  881. helping us

  882. to see

  883. is the

  884. tomb

  885. is empty

  886. because

  887. Jesus

  888. is alive

  889. and he's

  890. changing

  891. people

  892. she see

  893. she saw

  894. she believed

  895. and she was

  896. transformed

  897. now some

  898. of you may

  899. have come

  900. into this

  901. building

  902. this morning

  903. and you

  904. have a

  905. very similar

  906. cry of

  907. your heart

  908. when it

  909. comes to

  910. Jesus

  911. someone stole

  912. Jesus

  913. from you

  914. maybe it

  915. was when

  916. you were a

  917. child

  918. growing up

  919. in a

  920. church

  921. and another

  922. Christian

  923. did something

  924. and you

  925. were like

  926. I'm done

  927. I'm done

  928. with this

  929. take

  930. I'm done

  931. I'm walking

  932. away

  933. and you

  934. grieve the

  935. loss of your

  936. Jesus

  937. or maybe

  938. you're a

  939. college student

  940. you showed up

  941. freshman year

  942. to this

  943. big class

  944. with a really

  945. smart professor

  946. and this

  947. really smart

  948. professor

  949. just totally

  950. annihilates

  951. any argument

  952. for Jesus

  953. and his

  954. resurrection

  955. and it's

  956. like he

  957. you lost

  958. your Jesus

  959. at that

  960. point

  961. well the

  962. good news

  963. is this

  964. despite

  965. what other

  966. people have

  967. done

  968. despite

  969. best

  970. arguments

  971. John is

  972. very clear

  973. Jesus is

  974. alive

  975. and he

  976. calls you

  977. by name

  978. in John

  979. 10

  980. Jesus

  981. says

  982. the good

  983. shepherd

  984. calls his

  985. sheep

  986. by name

  987. and they

  988. know his

  989. voice

  990. when Mary

  991. hears

  992. Jesus

  993. calling her

  994. name

  995. lights on

  996. she sees

  997. and she

  998. believes

  999. and she's

  1000. transformed

  1001. her weeping

  1002. turns to

  1003. worship

  1004. and she's

  1005. just looking

  1006. to hold

  1007. on to her

  1008. savior

  1009. her risen

  1010. savior

  1011. if you've

  1012. lost your

  1013. Jesus

  1014. along the

  1015. way

  1016. he's calling

  1017. you by

  1018. name

  1019. how do you

  1020. know he's

  1021. calling you

  1022. do you

  1023. believe he's

  1024. alive

  1025. do you

  1026. believe he

  1027. died for

  1028. you on

  1029. the cross

  1030. do you

  1031. believe that

  1032. there is

  1033. life in

  1034. him and

  1035. no one

  1036. else

  1037. do you

  1038. want to

  1039. live your

  1040. life for

  1041. him

  1042. he's

  1043. calling

  1044. you

  1045. so what

  1046. you do

  1047. is this

  1048. you by

  1049. faith

  1050. like Mary

  1051. you just

  1052. cling to

  1053. him

  1054. so we

  1055. see

  1056. the tomb

  1057. is empty

  1058. because Jesus

  1059. is alive

  1060. and he's

  1061. changing

  1062. people

  1063. not just

  1064. in 33

  1065. AD

  1066. April

  1067. but he's

  1068. changing

  1069. people in

  1070. April

  1071. 2018

  1072. AD

  1073. because he's

  1074. still

  1075. alive

  1076. the next

  1077. encounter we

  1078. see is with

  1079. his disciples

  1080. in verses

  1081. 19 through

  1082. 23

  1083. the disciples

  1084. are holed up

  1085. in the upper

  1086. room locked

  1087. door and they

  1088. have basically

  1089. kind of isolated

  1090. themselves in

  1091. fear of the

  1092. Jews

  1093. these guys that

  1094. killed Jesus

  1095. what does that

  1096. mean for us

  1097. so they're

  1098. hiding

  1099. they're

  1100. fearful

  1101. circle the

  1102. wagons

  1103. call a

  1104. holy huddle

  1105. let's step

  1106. back

  1107. who knows

  1108. what's going

  1109. to happen

  1110. some of us

  1111. in this room

  1112. followers of

  1113. Jesus

  1114. we're seeing

  1115. where our

  1116. culture is

  1117. going and

  1118. we're asking

  1119. questions like

  1120. what does

  1121. this mean

  1122. for us

  1123. where's

  1124. this thing

  1125. going

  1126. well

  1127. verse

  1128. the second

  1129. part of

  1130. 19

  1131. Jesus

  1132. comes

  1133. and stands

  1134. among

  1135. them

  1136. and he

  1137. says peace

  1138. with you

  1139. he speaks

  1140. peace to

  1141. his fearful

  1142. disciples

  1143. they're

  1144. like who

  1145. what is

  1146. going on

  1147. he shows

  1148. them his

  1149. hands

  1150. he shows

  1151. them his

  1152. side

  1153. and then

  1154. we read

  1155. that verse

  1156. 20

  1157. the disciples

  1158. are glad

  1159. they move

  1160. from fear

  1161. hear words

  1162. of peace

  1163. Jesus is

  1164. present

  1165. and they're

  1166. glad

  1167. but it

  1168. doesn't stop

  1169. there

  1170. verse 21

  1171. Jesus

  1172. then tells

  1173. them

  1174. hey

  1175. I'm glad

  1176. that you're

  1177. gathered

  1178. together

  1179. but I'm

  1180. sending

  1181. you out

  1182. and he's

  1183. going to

  1184. send them

  1185. out

  1186. with power

  1187. from the

  1188. Holy Spirit

  1189. he breathes

  1190. the spirit

  1191. upon him

  1192. with the

  1193. authority

  1194. to proclaim

  1195. the forgiveness

  1196. of sins

  1197. that Christ

  1198. accomplished

  1199. on the

  1200. cross

  1201. it is

  1202. finished

  1203. he says

  1204. it's time

  1205. to go

  1206. now

  1207. see what's

  1208. going on

  1209. here

  1210. Jesus

  1211. disciples

  1212. are

  1213. fearful

  1214. they

  1215. isolate

  1216. themselves

  1217. they

  1218. hole up

  1219. in a

  1220. holy

  1221. huddle

  1222. Jesus

  1223. steps

  1224. into the

  1225. midst

  1226. of them

  1227. pronounces

  1228. peace

  1229. empowers

  1230. them with

  1231. his Holy

  1232. Spirit

  1233. and sends

  1234. them out

  1235. that's a

  1236. transformation

  1237. Jesus

  1238. is seen

  1239. he's

  1240. believed

  1241. and there's

  1242. a transformation

  1243. you see

  1244. what John

  1245. is doing

  1246. John

  1247. is helping

  1248. us to see

  1249. that the

  1250. tomb is

  1251. empty

  1252. because Jesus

  1253. is alive

  1254. and Jesus

  1255. is changing

  1256. people

  1257. back then

  1258. and now

  1259. and so

  1260. if you're

  1261. a Christian

  1262. and you're

  1263. fearful

  1264. of what

  1265. can happen

  1266. to you

  1267. because you're

  1268. associated

  1269. with Jesus

  1270. Jesus

  1271. says

  1272. I'm here

  1273. and I'm

  1274. here with

  1275. power

  1276. from the

  1277. Holy Spirit

  1278. to send

  1279. you out

  1280. we've seen

  1281. Jesus now

  1282. interact

  1283. with Mary

  1284. we've seen

  1285. him interact

  1286. with his

  1287. disciples

  1288. and now

  1289. verses 24

  1290. through 29

  1291. Thomas

  1292. aka

  1293. doubting

  1294. Thomas

  1295. in verse

  1296. 24

  1297. we read

  1298. that

  1299. Thomas

  1300. wasn't

  1301. there

  1302. when Jesus

  1303. appeared

  1304. to him

  1305. and he

  1306. had appeared

  1307. to him

  1308. Jesus

  1309. appeared

  1310. to his

  1311. disciples

  1312. that first

  1313. night

  1314. Easter

  1315. night

  1316. Thomas

  1317. wasn't

  1318. there

  1319. we're

  1320. not

  1321. told

  1322. why

  1323. and they

  1324. tell Thomas

  1325. they had

  1326. seen

  1327. Jesus

  1328. and in

  1329. verse 25

  1330. Thomas

  1331. responds

  1332. with a

  1333. degree

  1334. of

  1335. skepticism

  1336. he says

  1337. unless I

  1338. see in

  1339. his

  1340. hands

  1341. the mark

  1342. of the

  1343. nails

  1344. but then

  1345. he goes

  1346. further

  1347. she's not

  1348. seeing it

  1349. and place my

  1350. finger into

  1351. the mark

  1352. of the

  1353. nails

  1354. and place

  1355. my hand

  1356. into his

  1357. side

  1358. unless I

  1359. see it

  1360. I will

  1361. never

  1362. believe

  1363. unless I

  1364. put my

  1365. finger

  1366. in the

  1367. holes

  1368. in his

  1369. body

  1370. I will

  1371. never

  1372. believe

  1373. it's

  1374. quite a

  1375. statement

  1376. he's

  1377. saying

  1378. unless I

  1379. have

  1380. physical

  1381. tangible

  1382. verifiable

  1383. proof

  1384. I'm not

  1385. buying this

  1386. business

  1387. that Jesus

  1388. is alive

  1389. I mean

  1390. he's got

  1391. a point

  1392. normally

  1393. speaking

  1394. under normal

  1395. conditions

  1396. people who

  1397. are dead

  1398. three days

  1399. don't come

  1400. back to

  1401. life

  1402. there's a

  1403. doctor

  1404. do people

  1405. who are

  1406. dead

  1407. three days

  1408. come back

  1409. to life

  1410. no

  1411. medical

  1412. testimony

  1413. typically

  1414. not

  1415. normally

  1416. doesn't

  1417. happen

  1418. it's like

  1419. Thomas is

  1420. saying

  1421. I'll believe

  1422. it when I

  1423. see it

  1424. but more

  1425. than that

  1426. it's like

  1427. he's saying

  1428. I'll believe

  1429. it when I

  1430. can put my

  1431. finger in

  1432. it

  1433. when there's

  1434. tangible

  1435. proof

  1436. now I'm

  1437. guessing that

  1438. some of you

  1439. here this

  1440. morning have

  1441. real questions

  1442. about the

  1443. historical

  1444. reality

  1445. of the

  1446. resurrection

  1447. and you

  1448. have a

  1449. scientific

  1450. mind

  1451. and that

  1452. is a

  1453. good

  1454. thing

  1455. and you're

  1456. like I

  1457. just want

  1458. to know

  1459. how do I

  1460. know

  1461. how can I

  1462. figure this

  1463. out

  1464. did it really

  1465. happen

  1466. and how can

  1467. you verify

  1468. it

  1469. let me just

  1470. say this

  1471. and I hope

  1472. this helps

  1473. you I hope

  1474. this moves

  1475. you in a

  1476. particular

  1477. direction

  1478. the bodily

  1479. resurrection

  1480. of Jesus

  1481. Christ

  1482. from the

  1483. dead

  1484. is a

  1485. supernatural

  1486. event

  1487. it's not

  1488. a natural

  1489. event

  1490. it's a

  1491. supernatural

  1492. event

  1493. it's a

  1494. miracle

  1495. and it's

  1496. true

  1497. under normal

  1498. circumstances

  1499. people who

  1500. are dead

  1501. three days

  1502. don't come

  1503. back to

  1504. life

  1505. science

  1506. is a

  1507. good thing

  1508. the research

  1509. over the

  1510. decades

  1511. and years

  1512. that men

  1513. and women

  1514. have put

  1515. into finding

  1516. cures

  1517. that is

  1518. a good

  1519. thing

  1520. discovery

  1521. natural

  1522. revelation

  1523. we all

  1524. benefit

  1525. from that

  1526. all of us

  1527. have benefited

  1528. from health

  1529. treatments

  1530. that have

  1531. come from

  1532. the hard

  1533. research

  1534. of people

  1535. using science

  1536. to that

  1537. end

  1538. but one

  1539. of the

  1540. things

  1541. one of

  1542. the

  1543. limits

  1544. of

  1545. science

  1546. is

  1547. that

  1548. it's

  1549. incapable

  1550. of

  1551. really

  1552. explaining

  1553. supernatural

  1554. events

  1555. so do you

  1556. know what

  1557. will happen

  1558. if someone

  1559. tries to

  1560. apply the

  1561. scientific

  1562. method to

  1563. the

  1564. resurrection

  1565. of Jesus

  1566. Christ

  1567. that person

  1568. is going

  1569. to get

  1570. frustrated

  1571. because it's

  1572. like two

  1573. different

  1574. languages

  1575. speaking

  1576. the

  1577. scientific

  1578. method

  1579. depends

  1580. on

  1581. naturalistic

  1582. explanation

  1583. of natural

  1584. events

  1585. and realities

  1586. but what

  1587. happens

  1588. what happens

  1589. if a

  1590. supernatural

  1591. reality

  1592. is being

  1593. asked about

  1594. supernatural

  1595. literally means

  1596. beyond the

  1597. natural

  1598. here's what I

  1599. think happens

  1600. here's the

  1601. culture I

  1602. think we're

  1603. in

  1604. some people

  1605. in our

  1606. culture

  1607. see science

  1608. and they're

  1609. like yeah

  1610. that is

  1611. really helpful

  1612. it's really

  1613. helpful for

  1614. explaining

  1615. naturalistic

  1616. events

  1617. science

  1618. as a

  1619. discipline

  1620. but there's

  1621. other of us

  1622. who start

  1623. seeing science

  1624. not just as

  1625. a discipline

  1626. but as a

  1627. worldview

  1628. science explains

  1629. everything

  1630. and when

  1631. science is

  1632. unable to

  1633. explain

  1634. something

  1635. it can

  1636. then be

  1637. labeled

  1638. unscientific

  1639. which can

  1640. subtly mean

  1641. it's not

  1642. true

  1643. think about

  1644. it this

  1645. way

  1646. science is

  1647. like this

  1648. map

  1649. a map

  1650. that

  1651. explains

  1652. and describes

  1653. those things

  1654. in natural

  1655. events and

  1656. encourages and

  1657. it's really

  1658. helpful

  1659. it's very

  1660. clear

  1661. but what

  1662. happens when

  1663. there's something

  1664. that happens

  1665. beyond the

  1666. map

  1667. that goes

  1668. beyond the

  1669. scope of

  1670. what science

  1671. is

  1672. defined to

  1673. do

  1674. what are

  1675. other ways

  1676. to know

  1677. realities

  1678. how do you

  1679. know

  1680. supernatural

  1681. truth if

  1682. it's

  1683. supernatural

  1684. revelation

  1685. supernatural

  1686. revelation

  1687. and that's

  1688. exactly what

  1689. happens to

  1690. Thomas

  1691. Jesus reveals

  1692. himself to

  1693. Thomas

  1694. look with

  1695. me

  1696. Jesus

  1697. eight days

  1698. later

  1699. verse 26

  1700. his disciples

  1701. are inside

  1702. again

  1703. Thomas is

  1704. with them

  1705. this time

  1706. and Jesus

  1707. once again

  1708. stands among

  1709. them and

  1710. speaks peace

  1711. and then he

  1712. turns right to

  1713. Thomas and he

  1714. says to

  1715. Thomas

  1716. Thomas put

  1717. your finger

  1718. here

  1719. see my

  1720. hands

  1721. and then he

  1722. says and

  1723. put out your

  1724. hand and

  1725. place it in

  1726. my side

  1727. do not

  1728. disbelieve

  1729. but believe

  1730. and you know

  1731. what I find

  1732. very interesting

  1733. John does

  1734. not record

  1735. him doing

  1736. that

  1737. he doesn't

  1738. record that

  1739. he doesn't

  1740. show Thomas

  1741. putting his

  1742. finger in his

  1743. hand or

  1744. putting his

  1745. hand in his

  1746. side

  1747. what we

  1748. see happening

  1749. here is

  1750. Jesus reveals

  1751. himself to

  1752. Thomas and

  1753. in such a

  1754. way it

  1755. satisfies

  1756. Thomas

  1757. and he

  1758. says my

  1759. Lord and

  1760. my God

  1761. remember what

  1762. Thomas said

  1763. earlier

  1764. I will never

  1765. believe unless

  1766. this happens I

  1767. will never

  1768. believe

  1769. Jesus shows

  1770. up he

  1771. doesn't touch

  1772. him and

  1773. he believes

  1774. my Lord

  1775. and my

  1776. God

  1777. when Thomas

  1778. says my

  1779. Lord and my

  1780. God he's

  1781. saying two

  1782. things

  1783. Jesus is

  1784. preeminent over

  1785. all Lord of

  1786. Lords and

  1787. he's his

  1788. Lord and he

  1789. also says my

  1790. God talking

  1791. about Jesus

  1792. true nature

  1793. God in the

  1794. flesh and

  1795. notice the

  1796. my's I

  1797. belong to

  1798. him now he's

  1799. my Lord and

  1800. my God

  1801. Thomas knew

  1802. at once as

  1803. he's standing

  1804. in the presence

  1805. of the risen

  1806. incarnate God

  1807. Lord of

  1808. Lords that he

  1809. is alive

  1810. so here's what

  1811. John is doing

  1812. John is showing

  1813. this account of

  1814. Thomas coming

  1815. face to face

  1816. with the risen

  1817. Jesus his

  1818. disbelief turned

  1819. to belief and

  1820. it shows us why

  1821. the tomb is

  1822. empty because

  1823. Jesus is alive

  1824. and Jesus

  1825. responds by

  1826. saying hey

  1827. have you

  1828. believed because

  1829. you've seen me

  1830. blessed are those

  1831. who have not

  1832. seen and yet

  1833. have believed

  1834. that's us

  1835. that's where

  1836. we're living

  1837. most likely

  1838. none of us

  1839. are going to

  1840. lay physical

  1841. eyes on the

  1842. risen Christ

  1843. but there are

  1844. other ways

  1845. to see him

  1846. we're able to

  1847. believe in

  1848. Jesus now by

  1849. seeing him in

  1850. the revelation

  1851. of this book

  1852. of John's

  1853. eyewitness to

  1854. the resurrected

  1855. savior

  1856. it's a faithful

  1857. testimony of a

  1858. true event

  1859. when doubting

  1860. Thomas encounters

  1861. the risen

  1862. Jesus

  1863. he sees

  1864. he believes

  1865. and he's

  1866. transformed

  1867. I will never

  1868. believe

  1869. he's turned to

  1870. my Lord

  1871. and my God

  1872. so this morning

  1873. if you have

  1874. doubts about

  1875. the resurrection

  1876. of Jesus

  1877. because you

  1878. have a healthy

  1879. scientific mind

  1880. of inquiry

  1881. we're not

  1882. asking you

  1883. to reject

  1884. that

  1885. what I just

  1886. like to ask

  1887. you is this

  1888. maybe

  1889. you're trying

  1890. to make

  1891. science do

  1892. something it's

  1893. incapable of

  1894. doing

  1895. so here's

  1896. what I would

  1897. recommend

  1898. would you

  1899. take a little

  1900. step of faith

  1901. and if

  1902. Jesus is in

  1903. fact alive

  1904. you call

  1905. out to him

  1906. and ask

  1907. him to

  1908. reveal himself

  1909. to you

  1910. ask

  1911. Jesus

  1912. to show

  1913. himself

  1914. to you

  1915. we've got

  1916. these little

  1917. gospel of

  1918. John's on

  1919. the back

  1920. tables for

  1921. you to

  1922. have

  1923. and that's

  1924. where I

  1925. would start

  1926. this morning

  1927. we've covered

  1928. a lot of

  1929. ground

  1930. John has

  1931. shown us

  1932. the tomb

  1933. is empty

  1934. John walked

  1935. in

  1936. he saw

  1937. he believed

  1938. and there was

  1939. hope in his

  1940. heart

  1941. and then

  1942. John shows

  1943. us the tomb

  1944. is empty

  1945. because Jesus

  1946. is alive

  1947. Mary saw

  1948. believed

  1949. transformed

  1950. the disciples

  1951. saw

  1952. believed

  1953. transformed

  1954. Thomas

  1955. saw

  1956. believed

  1957. transformed

  1958. salvation

  1959. depends upon

  1960. what you

  1961. believe about

  1962. Jesus

  1963. if Jesus

  1964. was not

  1965. raised from

  1966. the dead

  1967. it casts

  1968. major doubts

  1969. on who he

  1970. was

  1971. and major

  1972. doubts on

  1973. what he sought

  1974. to do on the

  1975. cross but if

  1976. Jesus was

  1977. raised from

  1978. the dead

  1979. my lord

  1980. and my

  1981. god

  1982. if he was

  1983. raised from

  1984. the dead

  1985. his payment

  1986. for sin

  1987. is accepted

  1988. the resurrection

  1989. demonstrates that

  1990. we started

  1991. this sermon

  1992. together

  1993. with this

  1994. story of

  1995. my color

  1996. blindness

  1997. and this

  1998. aid asking

  1999. me do you

  2000. see do you

  2001. see do you

  2002. see

  2003. this morning

  2004. having looked

  2005. at this

  2006. eyewitness

  2007. account of

  2008. Jesus

  2009. do you

  2010. see

  2011. and if

  2012. you see

  2013. do you

  2014. believe

  2015. do you

  2016. believe

  2017. the historical

  2018. account

  2019. that Jesus

  2020. is alive

  2021. he is alive

  2022. in April

  2023. 33

  2024. he is alive

  2025. in April

  2026. 2018

  2027. and if

  2028. you put

  2029. your faith

  2030. in him

  2031. everything

  2032. changes

  2033. you go

  2034. from death

  2035. to life

  2036. you go

  2037. from hopelessness

  2038. to hope

  2039. and you go

  2040. from one

  2041. who is apart

  2042. from God

  2043. to one

  2044. who has

  2045. been reconciled

  2046. to God

  2047. this morning

  2048. if you

  2049. have never

  2050. confessed

  2051. with your

  2052. mouth

  2053. to Jesus

  2054. my lord

  2055. and my

  2056. God

  2057. let

  2058. this

  2059. April

  2060. 1st

  2061. be

  2062. that

  2063. date

  2064. he is

  2065. alive

  2066. he is

  2067. risen

  2068. let's

  2069. pray

  2070. God in

  2071. heaven

  2072. we thank

  2073. you so

  2074. much

  2075. for this

  2076. testimony

  2077. in our

  2078. Bibles

  2079. thank you

  2080. that it

  2081. is reliable

  2082. thank you

  2083. that it

  2084. speaks

  2085. to a

  2086. truth

  2087. and a

  2088. reality

  2089. that

  2090. is life

  2091. transforming

  2092. implications

  2093. Lord Jesus

  2094. we praise

  2095. you and

  2096. worship you

  2097. because not

  2098. only did you

  2099. die for us

  2100. you've been

  2101. risen from

  2102. the dead

  2103. and right

  2104. now you're

  2105. reigning on

  2106. high

  2107. and we

  2108. delight

  2109. in being

  2110. your
