  1. You may be seated.

  2. Well, this morning we're going to be in Psalm 63, so if you have a Bible, pop that open.

  3. If you don't, there's one in the back of your pew.

  4. Feel free to use your phone app if you need to use that.

  5. I won't be offended.

  6. Psalm 63.

  7. I don't know if you have a list of movies or videos that you could just watch and re-watch and re-watch,

  8. but for me it's Planet Earth.

  9. It's a nature documentary by the BBC.

  10. Anybody seen it?

  11. Oh, full hands.

  12. Yeah.

  13. It's just like a visual display of God's beauty and creativity and power.

  14. I love watching that.

  15. And recently I sat down to watch an episode of Planet Earth with my kids, and the focus of this episode was deserts.

  16. And the one thing that you had to grab from this episode, you couldn't help but understand,

  17. was that in the desert, everything revolves around where creatures find their water, or how they find their water.

  18. Without water, no creatures.

  19. So, for example, there's this little beetle in the Nabib Desert in Africa that has a very interesting way of finding its water.

  20. It climbs the sand dunes every morning.

  21. It's the equivalent of like 10 Everests for us.

  22. I mean, this gigantic sand dunes, this little tiny beetle going up to the top of the sand dunes.

  23. And he does it before the sun rises.

  24. And he does it because there's this fog that blows in pretty consistently from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, miles away.

  25. And once he gets to the top, he does a little handstand.

  26. And he stays like that for a long time.

  27. And he just stays still at about a 45-degree angle, head down.

  28. And what happens is the water droplets from the fog stick to his back.

  29. And eventually, more and more little tiny water droplets stick to his back.

  30. And they become bigger water droplets.

  31. And they get some gravity moving on them.

  32. And then eventually, the water droplets move down his back and through little channels on his head and into his mouth.

  33. Isn't that brilliant?

  34. Our God is so creative.

  35. That's how this beetle gets his water in the desert.

  36. And there's this chameleon that snags the beetle.

  37. And that's how the chameleon gets his water in the desert.

  38. It's pretty great.

  39. Little buggy eyes.

  40. If you're in the desert, you will do whatever you have to do to get water.

  41. You might be thinking that this morning in this hot sanctuary.

  42. Notice I'm preaching in shorts.

  43. You long for water.

  44. You pant for it.

  45. Because it's the only thing that can satisfy you.

  46. And David, the author of our psalm this morning, is in the desert.

  47. And he is longing.

  48. He is thirsting.

  49. But his thirst is not for water.

  50. Let's read this psalm together.

  51. Psalm 63.

  52. A psalm of David when he was in the wilderness.

  53. Literally, the desert of Judah.

  54. Oh God, you are my God.

  55. And earnestly, I seek you.

  56. My soul thirsts for you.

  57. My flesh faints for you.

  58. As in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

  59. So, literally, in this way, I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and your glory.

  60. Because your steadfast love is better than life.

  61. My lips will praise you.

  62. So, I will bless you as long as I live.

  63. In your name, I will lift up my hands.

  64. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food.

  65. And my mouth will praise you with joyful lips when I remember you on my bed.

  66. And meditate on you in the watches of the night.

  67. For you have been my help.

  68. And the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.

  69. My soul clings to you.

  70. Your right hand upholds me.

  71. But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth.

  72. They shall be given over to the power of the sword.

  73. They shall be a portion for jackals.

  74. But the king shall rejoice in God.

  75. All who swear by him shall exult.

  76. For the mouths of liars will be stopped.

  77. So, David is in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

  78. But his soul thirst is even more than his need for hydration.

  79. He is thirsting for the living God.

  80. It's hard to miss how, as we kind of move through this psalm, he starts off in verse 1, longing, thirsting.

  81. But by the time we get to verse 5, he is talking about being satisfied.

  82. So, he moves from this psalm from a place of thirst and parchedness of soul.

  83. And he moves and he is able to be satisfied in God's presence.

  84. And that's the big idea of this psalm.

  85. God satisfies those who thirst for his presence.

  86. God satisfies those who thirst for his presence.

  87. But what does it mean to be satisfied in God?

  88. What does that look like?

  89. We can't put God into a glass and drink him.

  90. We can't see him.

  91. What does it look like for our soul to be satisfied in God?

  92. Well, as we go through this psalm together, I want us to think about it as a four-piece puzzle.

  93. And each puzzle piece is going to give us a clearer, more complete picture of what it looks like to be satisfied in God.

  94. Little snapshots that are going to give us a picture of what that looks like.

  95. And at the end, we're going to tie it together and see how it kind of hits us right where we're at in our here and now in 2018.

  96. So, let's dive in.

  97. The first puzzle piece is this.

  98. Being satisfied in God means thirsting for God.

  99. Being satisfied in God means thirsting for God.

  100. It's a bit of stating the obvious.

  101. But you can't be satisfied unless you have a desire that needs to be satisfied.

  102. You can't experience the ah of a long, cool drink of water unless you've been working up a thirst that needs to be quenched.

  103. To be satisfied in God means you have to know that you need Him.

  104. And that's where David is at.

  105. He knows that he needs God desperately.

  106. Look at verse 1.

  107. Three verbs.

  108. He gets it again and again and again.

  109. This passionate yearning for God.

  110. Earnestly seeking.

  111. Thirsting.

  112. Fainting.

  113. He's like a man desperate for water in the Sahara Desert.

  114. He's stumbling his way toward God and hoping it's not a mirage.

  115. It affects him inside and out.

  116. Body and spirit.

  117. Notice his soul inside thirsts for you.

  118. But my flesh, my body faints for you.

  119. It's an all-consuming desire, not for water, for the living God.

  120. Now, it'll be helpful for us to know just a tad bit about why David's in the desert.

  121. He's most likely, it could be when Saul was pursuing him before David became king.

  122. There's probably more likely it's when David is being pursued by Absalom, his son, who is revolting against David and trying to take the kingdom from David.

  123. And this forced David out of his capital city of Jerusalem because Absalom is marching an army from Hebron to basically kill David and overthrow the city.

  124. And so David and his faithful followers flee to the desert for safety.

  125. So not only is he in a desert where there is little water, he's also unsure of how he and his followers are going to survive there.

  126. His soul is in turmoil.

  127. His own son has revolted against him.

  128. Everything that had been certain in his life is now coming unglued.

  129. He had no idea if he would remain king, if the people would remain loyal to him.

  130. Everything is up for grabs for David.

  131. And it's in the midst of this uncertainty and this danger that David's true character comes out.

  132. He composes this poem right in the middle of this chaos.

  133. And he tells God how desperate he is.

  134. But not desperate for a resolution to his problems.

  135. He tells God how desperate he is for God.

  136. For God himself.

  137. You are my God.

  138. Earnestly I seek you.

  139. My soul thirsts for you.

  140. My flesh faints for you.

  141. There is in every human soul a longing.

  142. It is a deep set longing.

  143. It's hard to put words on it.

  144. But it's a thirst that accompanies our every thought, our every motive.

  145. We were made to know the living God.

  146. Not to know about him.

  147. Not to nod to certain truths about who he is.

  148. But to know him personally.

  149. To have a real satisfying relationship with him.

  150. Because we bear his image.

  151. He stamped on us his very image.

  152. We can't help but thirst for him.

  153. Every human being has this longing.

  154. And I bet you felt this before.

  155. I bet you felt this thirst before.

  156. Maybe it was like after a great triumph or a success.

  157. And you're in the midst of celebrating good things.

  158. But then in the back of your mind there's this whisper of, is that it?

  159. Tom Brady, famous quarterback for New England Patriots,

  160. was once quoted in an interview more than 10 years ago

  161. after he won his first three Super Bowls,

  162. of basically saying, yeah, I've arrived.

  163. Is that it?

  164. The guy's on top of the world.

  165. The guy has everything that our culture says is it.

  166. And he's like, there's got to be something else.

  167. Or maybe it's when you behold the night sky.

  168. And you get this little glimpse of the grandeur,

  169. the mystery, the greatness.

  170. And you've got this thirst that gets awakened inside of you of,

  171. I want that something more.

  172. You and I were meant for the ultimate greatness of knowing

  173. and experiencing the unshielded glory of the living God,

  174. and we can't help but thirst for it.

  175. And we chase it down.

  176. We chase it down in the pleasures we pursue,

  177. the successes we strive for,

  178. the relationships we foster.

  179. We're looking for it.

  180. The ultimate joy, the ultimate security,

  181. the ultimate love that only God can actually give.

  182. But we tend to look in the wrong places.

  183. We are hardwired to be satisfied with the glory of God,

  184. but our rebellious hearts turn away from it.

  185. Our hearts twist and they corrupt this thirst

  186. into a thousand counterfeit longings.

  187. Just like Jeremiah said, God said through Jeremiah,

  188. my people have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters,

  189. and they have hewed out, carved out,

  190. broken cisterns for themselves,

  191. broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  192. We tend to trade the real thing for the cheap things

  193. that don't satisfy.

  194. So here's the question that God's word

  195. is confronting us with this morning.

  196. What are you thirsting for?

  197. Where are you seeking satisfaction?

  198. If you would be truly satisfied,

  199. God and God alone is the only one

  200. who's able to provide that.

  201. David knew that.

  202. So he was yearning,

  203. desperately panting for the living God.

  204. With that on our minds,

  205. let's move to the second puzzle piece

  206. of verses two to four.

  207. Second puzzle piece is this.

  208. Being satisfied in God means

  209. treasuring him as he has revealed himself.

  210. Treasuring him as he has revealed himself.

  211. So David turns a corner from his expression

  212. of thirst for God

  213. and starts recalling

  214. how he had beheld God

  215. in the holy temple in Jerusalem.

  216. Look at verse two.

  217. That so there,

  218. she's really literally

  219. in the same kind of longing way.

  220. It's kind of what that so stands for.

  221. I have looked upon you in the sanctuary.

  222. So in the past,

  223. David has drawn near to God

  224. where God could be found

  225. because God has always been

  226. a God who dwells with

  227. and resides with

  228. and reveals himself

  229. to his people.

  230. And in this time period,

  231. for David,

  232. it was in the tabernacle,

  233. a special tent

  234. that God had set up

  235. with the Ark of the Covenant.

  236. It's a place that God's

  237. concentrated glory

  238. dwelled with his people.

  239. And David,

  240. because he loved God,

  241. he wanted to be with God,

  242. he would be there.

  243. He would constantly go

  244. to the temple

  245. to behold God,

  246. to get as close as he could

  247. through offering of sacrifices,

  248. through the help of priests

  249. to mediate God's presence to David.

  250. He would want to be there.

  251. So verses 2 and 3 tell us

  252. that David had seen

  253. and come to know

  254. and treasure at least three things,

  255. three aspects,

  256. three facets about God,

  257. beholding,

  258. verse 2,

  259. your power

  260. and your glory,

  261. and then verse 3,

  262. because your steadfast love

  263. is better than life.

  264. So there's these three facets

  265. of God's valuing

  266. that David just latches onto.

  267. And he sees it

  268. and he beholds it.

  269. And what was David's response to that?

  270. Look at verse 3.

  271. He treasures God

  272. more than life itself.

  273. He's seen God

  274. as God has revealed himself

  275. and he is treasuring God

  276. more than life itself.

  277. This is an astounding statement.

  278. Look at verse 3.

  279. Because your steadfast love

  280. is better than life,

  281. my lips will praise you.

  282. Better than life?

  283. That statement should just smack us.

  284. We just can't move past this

  285. too quickly.

  286. David values

  287. and treasures

  288. God's steadfast love

  289. more than the breath

  290. in his lungs.

  291. More than the sweetness

  292. to the best of friendships

  293. or the feeling of sunshine

  294. on his face

  295. or watching his children play.

  296. David is saying,

  297. if you take all the joys

  298. and pleasures

  299. and good things

  300. of this life

  301. and you stack them

  302. on one end of the scale

  303. and then you put

  304. God's steadfast love

  305. on the other end of the scale,

  306. it's no contest.

  307. David would prefer death

  308. than to lose out

  309. on the steadfast love

  310. of God.

  311. It's astounding.

  312. Man, how could that be true?

  313. What could be better

  314. than living,

  315. than life itself?

  316. Isn't anything preferable

  317. to death?

  318. Not according to David.

  319. Knowing and treasuring

  320. the God

  321. who reveals himself

  322. by grace

  323. and who dwells

  324. with his people

  325. by grace

  326. is better

  327. than life.

  328. And in response

  329. to this

  330. three-fold vision

  331. of who God

  332. has declared himself

  333. to be,

  334. his power,

  335. his glory,

  336. his steadfast love,

  337. David pours out

  338. three pourings,

  339. verbal proclamations

  340. of praise.

  341. He says in verse 3,

  342. my lips will praise you.

  343. Verbally,

  344. he's praising you,

  345. but not just verbally,

  346. but with his life.

  347. I will bless you

  348. as long as I live.

  349. In your name,

  350. I will lift up my hands.

  351. It's this bodily expression

  352. of saying,

  353. God, you're worth

  354. more than life itself.

  355. So with all of David's being,

  356. he's saying,

  357. I treasure you

  358. more than anything else.

  359. Praise is an overflow.

  360. When you delight in something,

  361. you can't help

  362. but praise it.

  363. And to use one author's words,

  364. praise completes

  365. the enjoyment

  366. of something.

  367. Hopefully,

  368. we don't praise God

  369. because we have to.

  370. Because what we do

  371. on a Sunday morning,

  372. we praise God

  373. because we have come

  374. to know and treasure him

  375. as he has revealed himself

  376. and we can't help

  377. but say,

  378. yes,

  379. that's true

  380. with my whole being.

  381. This expression

  382. of devotion

  383. should just shake us

  384. to our core.

  385. It's been doing that

  386. to me all week.

  387. Do I know God

  388. like that?

  389. Do I treasure God

  390. like that?

  391. Do I seek him

  392. in the place

  393. he has revealed himself

  394. and treasure him

  395. more than life itself?

  396. But more than just

  397. kind of shaking us up

  398. and helping us

  399. see our priorities,

  400. it should also

  401. stimulate our faith

  402. because if this is true,

  403. just think about it,

  404. if this is true,

  405. then we worship a God

  406. and we know a God

  407. and we treasure a God

  408. who is literally

  409. better than life.

  410. Which is why Christians

  411. don't have to flinch

  412. in the face of death

  413. because we are going

  414. to our eternal reward.

  415. It's better.

  416. Jesus is better in this life

  417. and in the next.

  418. There's a greater joy,

  419. a greater satisfaction,

  420. an ultimate delight

  421. in goodness

  422. that goes beyond

  423. all the hard,

  424. difficult things

  425. and even goes beyond

  426. all the fleeting,

  427. temporary good things

  428. of this life.

  429. It goes beyond it.

  430. It's all a feather

  431. on the scale

  432. compared to the weighty

  433. joy of knowing God

  434. now and forever.

  435. Do we believe that?

  436. Do we believe that?

  437. Let's move to the third

  438. puzzle piece,

  439. verses five to eight.

  440. Being satisfied in God

  441. means thirsting for Him.

  442. Being satisfied in God

  443. means treasuring Him

  444. as He has revealed Himself.

  445. Thirdly,

  446. being satisfied in God

  447. means striving

  448. to savor His sufficiency.

  449. Striving to savor

  450. His sufficiency.

  451. Pastor Mike was talking

  452. about savoring

  453. the love of God

  454. in communion.

  455. We're going to talk

  456. about savoring

  457. in this point.

  458. We can't help but see it.

  459. I've got a weakness

  460. for Pixar movies.

  461. Anybody with me?

  462. One of my favorites

  463. is Ratatouille.

  464. Anybody like that one?

  465. It's this great movie

  466. about Remy

  467. who's a rat

  468. in France

  469. who instead of

  470. eating garbage

  471. has developed a taste

  472. for fine French cuisine

  473. and he learns

  474. how to cook it.

  475. And there's this one scene

  476. where he's trying

  477. to teach his brother

  478. Emil

  479. how to savor food.

  480. Emil is rather large

  481. and he likes to just

  482. stuff food in his mouth

  483. as fuel.

  484. But Remy's like,

  485. no, no, no, no.

  486. Slow down.

  487. He tries rather unsuccessfully

  488. to try to combine flavors

  489. in the palate

  490. for Emil

  491. and to perceive

  492. the beautiful music

  493. they make together

  494. on the palate.

  495. And David is doing

  496. some savoring

  497. in this section.

  498. My soul will be satisfied

  499. as with fat

  500. and rich food.

  501. And my mouth

  502. will praise you

  503. with joyful lips.

  504. We could translate

  505. fat and rich food

  506. into succulent

  507. filet mignon.

  508. The finest

  509. of foods.

  510. David is sitting down

  511. at a fine feast.

  512. He is slowly chewing,

  513. enjoying the flavors

  514. and he's praising

  515. with words of joy

  516. what he is tasting

  517. but he's not chewing

  518. on food.

  519. He is remembering God.

  520. He is meditating

  521. on God.

  522. Meditating,

  523. you shouldn't be scared

  524. of that word.

  525. It's just the art

  526. of savoring

  527. who God is.

  528. Mentally chewing

  529. on the truth

  530. we know about God.

  531. And David's doing that

  532. right here.

  533. But it's hard work.

  534. It takes striving.

  535. It takes fighting

  536. to turn your thoughts

  537. toward God.

  538. And David is doing that.

  539. He is on his bed.

  540. Remember,

  541. he is in the desert

  542. running for his life.

  543. What kind of thoughts

  544. are naturally

  545. coming to his mind?

  546. Anxiety,

  547. fear,

  548. maybe depression,

  549. despair.

  550. And instead,

  551. he's taking

  552. those thoughts

  553. and he's

  554. putting them aside

  555. and he's turning

  556. his eyes

  557. and he's saying,

  558. no,

  559. I will chew on

  560. the truth

  561. about what I know

  562. who God is.

  563. And then he begins

  564. to find his soul

  565. satisfied.

  566. And we know

  567. what he's chewing on.

  568. It's high,

  569. savory thoughts

  570. of God's sufficiency.

  571. Look at verse 7 and 8.

  572. For you have been

  573. my help

  574. and in the shadow

  575. of your wings

  576. I will sing for joy.

  577. My soul clings to you

  578. and your right hand

  579. upholds me.

  580. So God

  581. has been

  582. and is presently

  583. David's help.

  584. And he uses

  585. this beautiful picture

  586. of a baby bird

  587. being sheltered

  588. under the shadow

  589. of his mother's wings.

  590. So he's resting

  591. in the parental

  592. and affectionate

  593. care of God

  594. who is his help.

  595. And it's in his

  596. most vulnerable,

  597. private,

  598. exposed moments

  599. where his mind

  600. could go anywhere else

  601. for comfort

  602. and shelter.

  603. He goes to God.

  604. And he's singing

  605. for joy

  606. because his soul

  607. has arrived

  608. at the place

  609. of savoring

  610. high thoughts

  611. of God's

  612. sufficiency.

  613. sufficiency.

  614. And it's not just

  615. because God

  616. shelters him

  617. from danger,

  618. not just because

  619. of what God

  620. does for him,

  621. but because he

  622. is near to God

  623. like a baby bird

  624. is near his mother.

  625. And God is all

  626. he needs.

  627. God is all

  628. he wants.

  629. God is his

  630. full sufficiency

  631. and David

  632. is satisfied.

  633. And David's

  634. anxiety

  635. is turned

  636. into joyful

  637. satisfaction

  638. in the process

  639. of striving

  640. to savor

  641. the sufficiency

  642. of God

  643. in his most

  644. vulnerable

  645. moments.

  646. In our age,

  647. not only do we

  648. have our

  649. anxieties

  650. and our fears

  651. to occupy

  652. our minds,

  653. we also have

  654. a thousand

  655. distractions.

  656. They tend

  657. to get flashed

  658. at us on screens,

  659. whether big

  660. or small,

  661. and they can

  662. easily occupy

  663. our thoughts

  664. until kingdom

  665. come,

  666. if we let them.

  667. we must

  668. strive

  669. as God's

  670. people

  671. to be satisfied

  672. with high,

  673. savory thoughts

  674. of God's

  675. sufficiency.

  676. We must,

  677. we must

  678. strive

  679. to aim

  680. our thoughts

  681. at him

  682. in our most

  683. private moments,

  684. whether it's

  685. driving in the car

  686. or laying in bed.

  687. Where

  688. do you turn

  689. for satisfaction?

  690. What do you

  691. meditate on

  692. to bring contentment

  693. to your soul,

  694. to quench

  695. your thirst?

  696. Let's move

  697. to the last

  698. puzzle piece,

  699. verses 9

  700. through 11.

  701. The last

  702. puzzle piece

  703. is this,

  704. being satisfied

  705. in God

  706. means joyfully

  707. anticipating

  708. his promised

  709. deliverance.

  710. Joyfully

  711. anticipating

  712. his promised

  713. deliverance.

  714. You see,

  715. he changes

  716. tone in verses

  717. 9 and 10.

  718. He starts

  719. talking about

  720. his enemies,

  721. those who are

  722. seeking to destroy

  723. his life,

  724. but it's

  725. interesting

  726. that it's

  727. taken him

  728. so long

  729. to get

  730. to his

  731. enemies,

  732. isn't it?

  733. David's

  734. been so

  735. caught up

  736. with his

  737. intense

  738. longing for

  739. and satisfaction

  740. in God

  741. that just

  742. now is he

  743. bringing his

  744. danger

  745. to the

  746. foreground

  747. of his

  748. thoughts.

  749. His eyes

  750. are so

  751. focused

  752. on God

  753. and he's

  754. utterly

  755. confident

  756. that God

  757. will deliver

  758. those who

  759. trust in

  760. him and

  761. those who

  762. long for

  763. him.

  764. He knows

  765. that the

  766. tables are

  767. going to be

  768. turned.

  769. He knows

  770. that for

  771. those who

  772. trust in

  773. God,

  774. there is

  775. deliverance.

  776. He's running

  777. for his

  778. life now,

  779. but he knows

  780. that ultimately

  781. it's his

  782. enemies that

  783. will be

  784. delivered over

  785. death and

  786. given over

  787. to the

  788. sword.

  789. And just

  790. as God

  791. is satisfying

  792. his deepest

  793. longings,

  794. ironically,

  795. he also

  796. is going to

  797. satisfy the

  798. longings of

  799. some hungry

  800. jackals who

  801. are going to

  802. feast on the

  803. flesh of his

  804. enemies.

  805. It's a little

  806. gruesome,

  807. but it's this

  808. vivid expression

  809. of confidence

  810. that God

  811. will ultimately

  812. be seen to

  813. be just and

  814. right at the

  815. end of the

  816. day.

  817. That God

  818. will deliver

  819. those who

  820. trust in

  821. him.

  822. And those who

  823. are bent on

  824. evil will

  825. eventually be on

  826. the receiving end

  827. of the evil they

  828. seek to

  829. perpetrate.

  830. So one day,

  831. lying lips will

  832. be stopped

  833. up.

  834. Evil will

  835. cease.

  836. God is ultimately

  837. in control and

  838. because God is

  839. good and because

  840. he is just,

  841. he will punish

  842. evil and he

  843. will make all

  844. things right.

  845. And this

  846. causes David to

  847. just rejoice all

  848. the more in

  849. verse 11.

  850. But the king

  851. shall rejoice in

  852. God.

  853. But not only

  854. David, all those

  855. who are loyal to

  856. God and to

  857. the king.

  858. In other words,

  859. all of God's

  860. people who seek

  861. to satisfy their

  862. deepest longing in

  863. God will ultimately

  864. rejoice at the end

  865. of the day.

  866. God will bring

  867. about his

  868. ultimate deliverance.

  869. He is our only

  870. and he is our

  871. ultimate hope.

  872. That things will

  873. be set right.

  874. So our puzzle is

  875. complete.

  876. God satisfies those

  877. who thirst for his

  878. presence.

  879. We've seen what

  880. this looks like for

  881. David in Psalm 63.

  882. Thirst for him,

  883. treasuring him as

  884. he's revealed himself,

  885. striving to savor

  886. his sufficiency,

  887. joyfully anticipating

  888. his promise,

  889. deliverance.

  890. But where does that

  891. hit us today?

  892. How does that

  893. meet us where we

  894. are in 2018?

  895. Well, I'm sure

  896. we've all felt the

  897. weight of this

  898. psalm.

  899. It's a joyful

  900. weight, but it's a

  901. bit of a sober

  902. weight.

  903. As we've walked

  904. through it, we

  905. feel the tension

  906. in this psalm of

  907. like, yeah, I want

  908. that, but I'm not

  909. really there.

  910. Or I strive for

  911. that, but I fall

  912. short of seeking

  913. to quench my thirst

  914. fully in God like

  915. David is here.

  916. here.

  917. It's like, am I

  918. joyfully aiming all

  919. of my longing at

  920. God?

  921. Well, kind of.

  922. My best moments, or

  923. maybe not really.

  924. I know I tend to

  925. value my own

  926. precious life and

  927. all of its

  928. temporary promises

  929. more than the

  930. electric experience

  931. of knowing the

  932. steadfast love of

  933. God that is better

  934. than life.

  935. we are guilty of

  936. putting our ultimate

  937. confidence in and

  938. seeking our ultimate

  939. longing in other

  940. things.

  941. This psalm exposes our

  942. deepest longing, but

  943. it also reveals our

  944. most grievous failure

  945. to satisfy that

  946. deepest longing in the

  947. only place that it can

  948. be satisfied.

  949. And this has been our

  950. problem, humanly

  951. speaking, from the

  952. beginning, right?

  953. Adam and Eve in the

  954. garden were utterly

  955. content in God's

  956. presence.

  957. They were the only two

  958. who had experienced

  959. the unshielded glory and

  960. favor and pleasure of

  961. the living God, and yet

  962. they made the conscious

  963. choice to find their

  964. delight in their own

  965. self-sufficiency.

  966. You will be like God.

  967. And they bought the

  968. lie, and we do too.

  969. We dig broken, muddy,

  970. empty cisterns for

  971. ourselves instead of

  972. going to the fountain

  973. of living waters.

  974. But what's astounding is

  975. that our God still says,

  976. come.

  977. Flip over to Isaiah 55

  978. for a second.

  979. Isaiah 55.

  980. It's not too far away

  981. from Psalm 63 to the

  982. right.

  983. Isaiah 55.

  984. God still says, come.

  985. He's beckoning.

  986. And in Isaiah's day,

  987. he's beckoning to an

  988. unfaithful covenant

  989. people who are

  990. constantly going all

  991. over the place except

  992. for seeking the living

  993. God.

  994. And he still tells his

  995. unfaithful people, come.

  996. Come to me.

  997. Isaiah 55, verse 1.

    Isaiah 55:1

  998. Come, everyone who

  999. thirsts, come to the

  1000. waters.

1001. And he who has no money,

  1002. come, buy, and eat.

  1003. Come, buy wine and

  1004. milk without money

  1005. and without price.

1006. Why do you spend your

  1007. money on things that

1008. which is not bread and

  1009. your labor for that

  1010. which does not satisfy?

  1011. Listen diligently to me

1012. and eat what is good

  1013. and delight yourselves

  1014. in rich food.

  1015. Incline your ear and

  1016. come to me.

  1017. Hear that your soul

  1018. may live.

1019. Do you hear the echoes

  1020. of Psalm 63 there?

  1021. It's this invitation.

  1022. God's beckoning.

  1023. Come, satisfy your thirst

  1024. in me.

  1025. You can't earn it.

  1026. You can't buy it.

  1027. It's all of grace.

  1028. Just respond to the

  1029. invitation.

  1030. Drink deeply of the

  1031. living God.

1032. Eat the food of my

  1033. living word.

  1034. Don't spend your money

  1035. on cheap invitation

  1036. stuff.

  1037. And God makes good

  1038. on this invitation.

1039. He makes good on the

  1040. invitation to find

  1041. ultimate satisfaction

  1042. in himself when he

1043. sat next to a well

1044. on a hot, dusty day,

  1045. not unlike today,

  1046. outside an unimportant

  1047. Samaritan town talking

  1048. to a nameless Samaritan

1049. woman in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  1050. And we overhear him

  1051. say,

  1052. everybody who drinks

1053. of this water in this

  1054. well will be

  1055. thirsty again.

  1056. But whoever drinks

1057. of the water that I

  1058. give him will never

  1059. be thirsty again.

1060. The water that I give

1061. him will become in him

  1062. a spring of water

  1063. welling up to eternal

  1064. life.

  1065. Or listen again to

1066. God the Son speak in

  1067. John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

1068. On the last day of

  1069. the feast, the great

  1070. day, Jesus stood up

  1071. and cried out,

  1072. if anybody thirsts

1073. let him come to me

  1074. and drink.

  1075. Whoever believes in me

  1076. as the scripture has

1077. said, out of his heart

  1078. will flow rivers of

  1079. living water.

  1080. Only in Jesus,

1081. only in Jesus can we

  1082. know the thirst

  1083. quenching satisfaction

  1084. that comes from knowing

  1085. the living God and

  1086. experiencing his

  1087. presence.

1088. Only in Jesus has God

  1089. fully and finally

  1090. revealed himself.

1091. Only in Jesus can we

  1092. fully know the

  1093. steadfast love of God.

1094. Only in Jesus can we

1095. know what it means to

  1096. take shelter under the

  1097. wings, under the blood

1098. that he shed for the

  1099. forgiveness of our sins

1100. so that we can be in

  1101. God's presence unafraid.

1102. And this is true of us

1103. now if we are in Christ.

1104. If you are in Christ,

1105. you can really and truly

  1106. know God through Jesus

1107. by the power of his

  1108. spirit.

  1109. That reference that

1110. Jesus was making to the

  1111. rivers of living water

  1112. was pointing to God's

  1113. spirit.

1114. Who is God's very living

  1115. and active presence

  1116. dwelling in and amongst

  1117. the people of God.

1118. We don't have to go to

  1119. God's temple anymore to

  1120. be near his presence.

1121. We have God the spirit

  1122. indwelling us.

  1123. Working in us.

  1124. Shaping our affections and

1125. our longings to be more

1126. and more aimed at finding

  1127. our satisfaction in him

  1128. through Jesus.

1129. Listen to how Paul, the

  1130. apostle in Philippians 3,

1131. listen to how the spirit of

  1132. God produces this longing,

1133. this thirst, and this joy in

  1134. finding satisfaction in Jesus.

  1135. He says,

  1136. Indeed, I count everything

1137. as a loss compared to the

  1138. surpassing worth of knowing

  1139. Christ Jesus my Lord.

1140. For his sake I have suffered

1141. the loss of all things.

1142. I count them as rubbish in

1143. order that I may gain Christ

1144. and be found in him.

1145. That I may know him and the

1146. power of his resurrection and

  1147. share his sufferings, becoming

1148. like him in his death, that by

1149. any means possible I may

  1150. attain the resurrection from

  1151. the dead.

1152. If Jesus is that satisfying,

1153. then any loss of any

  1154. earthly thing, it's easy

1155. compared to the ravishing joy

  1156. of knowing him.

1157. And one day, by God's grace,

1158. this partial reality will be

  1159. gloriously complete.

1160. Because the rivers of living

1161. water find their source, their

1162. headwaters in the new heavens

1163. and the new earth in the

  1164. unshielded glory and presence

1165. of the living God and of the

  1166. Lamb.

  1167. In Revelation 22, there's this

  1168. beautiful picture.

1169. It says, the angel showed me

1170. the river of the water of life

1171. in the city of God, bright as

  1172. crystal, flowing from the

1173. throne of God and of the Lamb

1174. through the middle of the

  1175. street of the city.

1176. One day, we will participate and

1177. partake of the joyous presence of

1178. the living God and we will drink

1179. it deep forever without ceasing

1180. and we will be satisfied in him

1181. and we will see his face.

1182. We will literally behold him in

1183. his holy place and we will be

  1184. satisfied.

  1185. satisfied.

1186. So how should we respond to

  1187. this?

1188. Well, first, if there are

1189. competing joys and pleasures in

1190. you that are taking the place of

1191. the God who can alone satisfy you,

  1192. then repent.

1193. Repentance is a beautiful word.

1194. It's the only way by which we find

1195. joy in the living God is from

1196. turning from things that don't

1197. satisfy and turn to the only one

  1198. who does satisfy.

  1199. So search your heart.

1200. Ask God to search your heart.

1201. Where am I finding joy and

  1202. satisfaction?

  1203. Ultimate joy and satisfaction,

  1204. not in you, Jesus.

1205. Whether it's an affection or

1206. approval of other people or in

1207. success or comfort or control

  1208. of your circumstances, whatever

1209. else you're trying to find your

1210. satisfaction in, turn away from

  1211. it.

1212. Turn to the one who can

  1213. ultimately only satisfy you.

1214. Secondly, there are good things in

  1215. this life to enjoy.

1216. Many of us are going to sit out

1217. here and enjoy the Fourth of July

  1218. parade.

  1219. Good things.

1220. We shouldn't be afraid to enjoy

  1221. good things.

1222. So we need to ask God to give us

1223. wisdom and discretion to put

1224. legitimate joys and pleasures and

1225. good gifts that he gives us in

  1226. their proper place.

  1227. It's good to experience a long,

1228. cool drink of water and be

  1229. satisfied.

1230. That's nothing wrong with that.

1231. But we, you and I both know the

  1232. difference between seeking our

1233. ultimate longing in something and

1234. enjoying a good gift with

  1235. gratitude.

1236. And that's what God wants us to

  1237. aim at.

1238. So let's ask him for wisdom.

1239. If there are things that are

1240. pulling at your heart, then

  1241. repent of that.

1242. But then ask him for wisdom to

1243. enjoy him through these good

  1244. gifts he gives.

1245. Thirdly, sometime today, this week,

1246. take a step of faith toward God,

1247. toward Jesus as your ultimate joy.

1248. When you open your Bible this week,

1249. take a step toward him and say,

  1250. satisfy me.

1251. You know my longing for you.

  1252. Satisfy me.

1253. Take a step toward him and ask him

1254. to satisfy you with his steadfast love.

1255. If you pray this evening, ask him to

1256. delight your soul with savory thoughts

  1257. of his sufficiency.

1258. Go to him in a step of faith.

1259. It doesn't always feel natural.

1260. It doesn't always feel really easy.

  1261. But take a step.

1262. Or maybe it's in your most private

  1263. moments.

1264. Maybe it's in the car.

1265. Maybe it's in lying in bed.

1266. And ask, satisfy me in your steadfast love.

1267. Maybe it means a step of faith of fasting.

1268. Fasting is the putting aside of a good,

1269. legitimate thing like food and saying,

1270. I'm going to put this aside for a moment

1271. and I'm going to seek my real satisfaction

  1272. in God.

1273. But take a step of faith and obedience

  1274. this week.

1275. Just enjoy and be satisfied in God.

1276. And lastly, if you've been listening

  1277. and you're aware that there's,

1278. you have not tasted and seen

1279. that Jesus is the all-satisfying one,

1280. then come down after service

1281. and we'd love to pray with you

1282. that you would find your satisfaction

1283. and find your deepest thirst quenched

  1284. in the living God.

  1285. Let's pray.

  1286. Amen.

1287. Father, thank you for sustaining us

1288. by your presence in your word.

1289. Thank you, Father, that in you

1290. we find our only satisfaction.

1291. Help us now to turn to you in song

1292. and with steps of faith and obedience

1293. to find our greatest joy and satisfaction

1294. in you and you alone.

  1295. In Christ's name, amen.
