  1. work our way through it

  2. and draw conclusions

  3. that your spirit would

  4. be at work in our hearts

  5. learning who you are

  6. and worshipping you as a result.

  7. I pray that you would bless our time together now

  8. in your name. Amen.

  9. Children, you are dismissed

  10. to your class.

  11. We are in the middle of a

  12. short mini-series

  13. on the book of Ruth

  14. in three parts.

  15. Last week we looked at

  16. Ruth chapter 1.

    Ruth 1 chapter mention

  17. This week we are looking at Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  18. And next week we will conclude

  19. with a look at

  20. Ruth 3 and 4 together.

  21. Listen to the beginning

  22. of this article from a

  23. magazine called Psychology Today.

  24. I ran across this a couple of years ago.

  25. This is an article from Psychology Today.

  26. It says this,

  27. In 2007, a construction worker

  28. named Wesley Autry

  29. was standing on a subway platform

  30. in New York

  31. when a young man nearby

  32. had an epileptic seizure

  33. and rolled onto the track.

  34. Hearing the approach of a train,

  35. Wesley Autry

  36. impulsively jumped down

  37. to try to save the young man

  38. only to realize

  39. that the train

  40. was approaching too fast.

  41. Instead,

  42. he jumped on top

  43. of the young man's body

  44. and pushed him down

  45. into a drainage ditch

  46. between the tracks.

  47. The train operator saw them

  48. but it was too late to stop.

  49. Five cars of the train

  50. passed over their bodies

  51. but miraculously

  52. both of them

  53. were uninjured.

  54. Asked later by the New York Times

  55. why he had done it,

  56. Autry said,

  57. I just saw someone

  58. who needed help.

  59. I did what I felt was right.

  60. So then the author

  61. of this article

  62. goes on

  63. and says,

  64. The question of why

  65. human beings

  66. are sometimes prepared

  67. to risk their own lives

  68. to save others

  69. has puzzled philosophers

  70. and scientists

  71. for centuries.

  72. From an evolutionary

  73. point of view,

  74. altruism doesn't seem

  75. to make sense.

  76. According to the modern

  77. neo-Darwinian view,

  78. human beings

  79. are basically selfish.

  80. After all,

  81. we are only really carriers

  82. of thousands of genes

  83. whose only aim

  84. is to survive

  85. and replicate themselves.

  86. We shouldn't be interested

  87. in sacrificing ourselves

  88. for others

  89. or even in helping others

  90. at all.

  91. We all want there

  92. to be good in the world.

  93. We want other people

  94. to be good

  95. and we want to be good

  96. and we want people

  97. to treat each other well,

  98. especially in the hard times

  99. because sometimes

  100. it's in the hard times

  101. when our true character

  102. really comes out.

  103. But the author

  104. of this article

  105. asks a good question here.

  106. Why should we be

  107. any better than our genes?

  108. Other than this,

  109. basic instinct

  110. and impulse

  111. to get for ourselves

  112. and to sort of shore up

  113. our own lives

  114. and our own circumstances,

  115. why should we be

  116. any better than that?

  117. Why should we be

  118. any better

  119. than our own self-interest?

  120. And that's really

  121. the issue

  122. in the book of Ruth.

  123. That's the question

  124. that we're looking

  125. to the book of Ruth

  126. to answer.

  127. Today we're going to look

  128. at Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  129. So I invite you

  130. to turn there

  131. in your Bibles

  132. with me.

  133. We're going to read it

  134. and we're going to talk

  135. about a couple

  136. of key issues

  137. and then we're going

  138. to draw some conclusions

  139. about the meaning

  140. of the whole.

  141. As we turn

  142. to Ruth chapter 2,

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  143. let's review

  144. where we are

  145. in the story.

  146. It's the period

  147. of the book of Judges.

  148. It's a very dark time

  149. in Israel's history.

  150. God's people

  151. have forgotten

  152. what God did

  153. to redeem them

  154. in the promised land

  155. and what God had done

  156. to redeem them

  157. from slavery

  158. to take them

  159. into the promised land

  160. and they are

  161. worshipping other gods

  162. and abusing

  163. and mistreating

  164. each other.

  165. We have these little

  166. vignettes through

  167. the book of Judges.

  168. These little stories

  169. which sort of

  170. encapsulate the period

  171. which illustrate

  172. what Israel was like

  173. at that time.

  174. We have a man

  175. who kills his own daughter.

  176. We have a wife

  177. who is burned alive.

  178. We have the leader

  179. of Israel

  180. who visits prostitutes

  181. and engages

  182. in all these petty

  183. little squabbles

  184. and fights

  185. and kind of

  186. dilly-dallies

  187. with the enemy

  188. instead of fighting them.

  189. We have a man

  190. who makes

  191. homemade idols

  192. in order to worship them

  193. and he hires a Levite

  194. to be his own

  195. personal priest

  196. but then another

  197. tribe of Israel

  198. steals the gods

  199. and worships them

  200. themselves.

  201. We have a man

  202. and a woman

  203. who are traveling

  204. through the southern

  205. part of Israel

  206. and it's time

  207. to spend the night

  208. but they don't want

  209. to stay in

  210. Canaanite territory

  211. because maybe

  212. that would be

  213. too dangerous

  214. so they decide

  215. to go just a little

  216. further to Israelite

  217. territory

  218. will it be safer

  219. and during the night

  220. men surround the house

  221. and they try and drag

  222. the man out

  223. and rape him

  224. and in order

  225. to protect himself

  226. he shoves his

  227. concubine outside

  228. where she is

  229. ferociously raped

  230. and killed

  231. and as a result

  232. the man cuts her

  233. into 12 pieces

  234. and starts a civil war.

  235. I mean these are

  236. the little vignettes

  237. that describe Israel

  238. at that time

  239. in the book of Judges.

  240. It is a very dark time

  241. filled with faithlessness

  242. and immorality

  243. taking advantage

  244. of anyone

  245. who was vulnerable

  246. or who could be exploited.

  247. It was especially

  248. a dangerous time

  249. for women

  250. and the book of Judges

  251. says everyone did

  252. what was right

  253. in their own eyes.

  254. They just do

  255. whatever is best

  256. for themselves.

  257. It's survival

  258. of the fittest.

  259. In fact,

  260. they're doing exactly

  261. what the author

  262. of that article

  263. in Psychology Today

  264. assumed they probably

  265. should do.

  266. whatever is best

  267. for them

  268. and it's just

  269. a disaster.

  270. And so during this time

  271. there's a famine

  272. and a woman named Naomi

  273. and her husband

  274. and her two sons

  275. travel to Moab.

  276. Moab is an enemy territory.

  277. It's known for idolatry

  278. and sexual immorality

  279. and they have a history

  280. of scandal with Israel

  281. and so as a result

  282. the book of Deuteronomy

  283. says that no Moabite

  284. will ever enter

  285. the assembly of the Lord.

  286. Naomi's husband dies.

  287. The sons marry

  288. Moabite women

  289. even though

  290. they probably shouldn't.

  291. Neither couple

  292. has any children

  293. for ten years.

  294. Then the sons die

  295. and what all of that

  296. means is that

  297. we now have

  298. not one

  299. but three

  300. desperate

  301. poor widows

  302. with no one

  303. to take care of them.

  304. Naomi decides

  305. to go back to Israel

  306. because there's food there.

  307. But once they set off

  308. and they're on the way

  309. then she begins

  310. to have second thoughts

  311. and she realizes

  312. that her daughters-in-law

  313. won't have any hope

  314. in Israel.

  315. There's no hope

  316. for them there.

  317. There's only a life there

  318. of hard poverty

  319. and probably death.

  320. And of course

  321. the only way in that time

  322. that a young widow

  323. could possibly have

  324. any kind of a future

  325. is if she would remarry

  326. but no one in Israel

  327. is going to marry

  328. these Moabite girls.

  329. And so at her own expense

  330. she urges them

  331. to go back

  332. to their other families

  333. in Moab.

  334. And Orpah sees

  335. that her mother-in-law

  336. is right

  337. and so she does return

  338. and Ruth knows

  339. that Naomi's right as well.

  340. Ruth knows

  341. that there is no future

  342. for her in Israel.

  343. But she is sacrificing herself

  344. and she follows Naomi back

  345. and sacrifices her future for her.

  346. And when they get back

  347. to Bethlehem

  348. Naomi is angry.

  349. She blames God

  350. for her struggles

  351. and her situation

  352. and she tells the women

  353. of the town

  354. don't call me pleasant.

  355. I have a new name now.

  356. My name is bitter.

  357. Call me that.

  358. For the Lord

  359. has made me bitter.

  360. That's what people say

  361. when they don't have any hope.

  362. And now our story continues

  363. in Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  364. Let's read that together.

  365. Now Naomi had a relative

  366. of her husband's

  367. a worthy man

  368. of the clan of Elimelech.

  369. Sorry.

  370. Let's look at Ruth chapter

  371. Oh that is Ruth chapter 2.

    Ruth 2 chapter mention

  372. Sorry.

  373. A worthy man

  374. of the clan of Elimelech

  375. whose name was Boaz.

  376. And Ruth the Moabite

  377. said to Naomi

  378. Let me go to the field

  379. and glean among the ears

  380. of grain after him

  381. in whose sight

  382. I shall find favor.

  383. And she said to her

  384. Go my daughter.

  385. So she set out

  386. and went and gleaned

  387. in the field

  388. after the reapers

  389. and she happened to come

  390. to the part of the field

  391. belonging to Boaz

  392. who was of the clan

  393. of Elimelech.

  394. And behold Boaz

  395. came from Bethlehem

  396. and he said to the reapers

  397. The Lord be with you.

  398. And they answered

  399. The Lord bless you.

  400. Then Boaz said

  401. to his young man

  402. who was in charge

  403. of the reapers

  404. Whose young woman

  405. is this?

  406. And the servant

  407. who was in charge

  408. of the reapers

  409. answered

  410. She is the young

  411. Moabite woman

  412. who came back

  413. with Naomi

  414. from the country

  415. of Moab.

  416. She said

  417. Please let me glean

  418. and gather among

  419. the sheaves

  420. after the reapers.

  421. So she came

  422. and she has continued

  423. from the early morning

  424. until now

  425. except for a short rest.

  426. Then Boaz said to Ruth

  427. Now listen my daughter

  428. do not go to glean

  429. in another field

  430. or leave this one

  431. but keep close

  432. to my young women.

  433. Let your eyes

  434. be on the field

  435. that they are reaping

  436. and go after them.

  437. Have I not charged

  438. the young man

  439. not to touch you?

  440. And when you are thirsty

  441. go to the vessels

  442. and drink what the young man

  443. have drawn.

  444. Then she fell on her face

  445. bowing to the ground

  446. and said to him

  447. Why have I found favor

  448. in your eyes

  449. that you should take notice

  450. of me

  451. since I am a foreigner?

  452. But Boaz answered her

  453. All that you have done

  454. for your mother-in-law

  455. since the death

  456. of your husband

  457. has been fully told to me

  458. and how you left

  459. your father and mother

  460. and your native land

  461. and came to a people

  462. that you did not know before.

  463. The Lord repay you

  464. for what you have done

  465. and a full reward

  466. be given you

  467. by the Lord

  468. the God of Israel

  469. under whose wings

  470. you have come

  471. to take refuge.

  472. Then she said

  473. I have found favor

  474. in your eyes my Lord

  475. for you have comforted me

  476. and spoken kindly

  477. to your servant

  478. even though I am not

  479. one of your servants.

  480. And at mealtime

  481. Boaz said to her

  482. Come here

  483. and eat some of the bread

  484. and dip your morsel

  485. in the wine

  486. so she sat beside

  487. the reapers

  488. and he passed to her

  489. roasted grain

  490. and she ate

  491. until she was satisfied

  492. and she had some left over

  493. and when she rose to glean

  494. Boaz instructed

  495. his young men saying

  496. Let her glean

  497. even among the sheaves

  498. and do not reproach her

  499. and also pull out some

  500. from the bundles for her

  501. and leave it for her

  502. to glean

  503. and do not rebuke her.

  504. So she gleaned

  505. in the field

  506. until evening

  507. then she beat out

  508. what she had gleaned

  509. and it was about

  510. an ephah of barley

  511. and she took it up

  512. and went into the city.

  513. Her mother-in-law

  514. saw what she had gleaned

  515. she also brought out

  516. and gave her

  517. what food she had left over

  518. after being satisfied

  519. and her mother-in-law

  520. said to her

  521. Where did you glean today

  522. and where have you worked?

  523. Blessed be the man

  524. who took notice of you.

  525. So she told her mother-in-law

  526. with whom she had worked

  527. and said

  528. The man's name

  529. with whom I work today

  530. is Boaz.

  531. And Naomi said

  532. to her daughter-in-law

  533. May he be blessed

  534. by the Lord

  535. whose kindness

  536. has not forsaken

  537. the living or the dead.

  538. Naomi also said to her

  539. The man is a close relative

  540. of ours

  541. one of our redeemers

  542. and Ruth the Moabite

  543. said

  544. Besides

  545. he said to me

  546. you shall keep close

  547. by my young men

  548. until they have finished

  549. all my harvest

  550. and Naomi said to Ruth

  551. her daughter-in-law

  552. It is good my daughter

  553. that you go out

  554. with his young women

  555. lest in another field

  556. you be assaulted.

  557. So she kept close

  558. to the young women

  559. of Boaz

  560. gleaning until the end

  561. of the barley and wheat harvest

  562. and she lived

  563. with her mother-in-law.

  564. This is a great story

  565. and it's also history

  566. but it's more than history

  567. it's theological history

  568. it's written to tell us

  569. something about God

  570. and God's relationship

  571. with his people.

  572. It begins in verse 1

  573. by saying that

  574. Naomi had a relative

  575. of her husband's

  576. a worthy man

  577. of the clan of Elimelech

  578. whose name was Boaz.

  579. He's a worthy man.

  580. The NIV says

  581. that he's a man

  582. of standing.

  583. The King James Version

  584. says he's a mighty man

  585. of wealth.

  586. He's a relative

  587. of Naomi.

  588. And it's difficult

  589. to know

  590. which sense

  591. the author means

  592. by saying

  593. that he's a worthy man.

  594. Sometimes that word

  595. is used

  596. to refer to

  597. men in battle

  598. great military heroes.

  599. Sometimes it's used

  600. to refer to

  601. physical wealth.

  602. Sometimes it's used

  603. to refer to

  604. someone of great character.

  605. I think we'll find out

  606. a little later

  607. which one

  608. the author

  609. primarily means here

  610. when we get to

  611. chapter 3.

  612. But he's a man

  613. of standing

  614. in the community.

  615. He has influence.

  616. He's a man about town.

  617. He's wealthy.

  618. He has land

  619. and many servants.

  620. And we are going

  621. to find out

  622. very soon

  623. that he is good.

  624. What's interesting

  625. is that in this verse

  626. the narrator

  627. is telling us

  628. about Boaz.

  629. Ruth doesn't

  630. know about it.

  631. This is a word

  632. from the narrator

  633. to us the reader.

  634. Naomi apparently

  635. hasn't told Ruth

  636. about this.

  637. But what this

  638. allows us to do

  639. as readers

  640. is that as we

  641. get into the story

  642. we are able

  643. to watch the events

  644. unfold

  645. and we get to see

  646. Ruth's reaction

  647. to discovering Boaz

  648. and finding out

  649. what he will do

  650. for her.

  651. Naomi and Ruth

  652. need someone

  653. to help them

  654. and we are going

  655. to watch

  656. all of these

  657. pieces fall

  658. into place.

  659. Ruth the Moabite

  660. said to Naomi

  661. in verse 2

  662. let me go

  663. to the field

  664. and glean.

  665. Now in the ancient world

  666. there weren't any

  667. government programs

  668. like food stamps

  669. or Medicaid

  670. but one way

  671. that God

  672. provided for the poor

  673. was through something

  674. called gleaning.

  675. It says in Leviticus 19

  676. when you reap

  677. the harvest

  678. of your land

  679. you shall not

  680. reap your field

  681. right up to its edge

  682. neither shall you

  683. gather the gleanings

  684. after your harvest.

  685. In other words

  686. don't go back

  687. through a second time

  688. and do a better job.

  689. You shall not

  690. strip your vineyard

  691. bare

  692. neither shall you

  693. gather the fallen

  694. grapes of your vineyard

  695. you shall leave them

  696. for the poor

  697. and for the sojourner

  698. I am the Lord

  699. your God.

  700. So when farmers

  701. would harvest

  702. their field

  703. they would intentionally

  704. leave the edges there

  705. so that when the poor

  706. came through

  707. looking for some

  708. kind of food

  709. they could find it.

  710. Deuteronomy 24 19

  711. says when you reap

  712. your harvest

  713. in your field

  714. and forget a sheaf

  715. don't go back

  716. and get it.

  717. It shall be

  718. for the sojourner

  719. the fatherless

  720. and the widow

  721. that the Lord

  722. your God

  723. may bless you

  724. in all the work

  725. of your hands.

  726. It's a mentality.

  727. It's a mentality

  728. that the Mosaic Law

  729. is teaching.

  730. Don't be

  731. so efficient

  732. and so careful

  733. that there is

  734. nothing left

  735. for the poor person

  736. who wanders

  737. through the field

  738. looking for food.

  739. Make sure that

  740. there's something

  741. that they have

  742. to eat.

  743. Now Ruth is hoping

  744. that since it's

  745. harvest time

  746. she can go out

  747. and glean.

  748. She can go out

  749. into the field

  750. and find some

  751. leftover grains

  752. some scraps

  753. maybe that people

  754. have left behind.

  755. Notice in verse 2

  756. that the narrator

  757. calls her

  758. the Moabite.

  759. We know this.

  760. We've read chapter 1

  761. but he keeps

  762. bringing this up

  763. because it's significant

  764. that she's not

  765. an Israelite

  766. she's a Moabite

  767. and all of the associations

  768. that come along

  769. with that.

  770. This does not sound

  771. like a good plan.

  772. She,

  773. a Moabite,

  774. is going to go

  775. to the field

  776. where all the other

  777. Israelite workers are.

  778. She's alone

  779. and she's going to

  780. try and get free food

  781. from them

  782. in the time

  783. of the judges.

  784. Notice she says

  785. in whose sight

  786. I find favor.

  787. See,

  788. I think that she

  789. suspects

  790. that there could

  791. be trouble.

  792. So she's hoping

  793. that she'll find

  794. someone there

  795. who will look

  796. well on her,

  797. who will give her

  798. favor and not

  799. mistreat her

  800. because she recognizes

  801. that she's in a

  802. vulnerable

  803. and risky situation

  804. here.

  805. So she set out

  806. and went and gleaned

  807. in the field

  808. after the reapers.

  809. Now when we think

  810. of fields,

  811. we think of Wisconsin

  812. which have

  813. these huge farms,

  814. sometimes as large

  815. as the eye can see.

  816. In 2012,

  817. the average

  818. Wisconsin farm

  819. was 195 acres.

  820. But in ancient Israel,

  821. the fields were

  822. very small.

  823. There was no fertilizer

  824. or modern equipment.

  825. The land did not

  826. produce well.

  827. The harvests

  828. were small.

  829. It was just

  830. subsistence farming.

  831. People were basically

  832. trying to get enough

  833. food to get by.

  834. And often,

  835. there was just

  836. one big field

  837. and then parts

  838. of the field

  839. were separated

  840. by these boundary stones.

  841. So kind of as you went

  842. from one part

  843. of the field

  844. to the next,

  845. you didn't really

  846. have a clear sense

  847. that you were moving

  848. from one person's

  849. property to another one.

  850. And as she's working

  851. through the field,

  852. she's looking for leftovers

  853. and she comes

  854. to the part of the field

  855. belonging to Boaz.

  856. But she didn't just

  857. come to that part.

  858. It says in verse 3,

  859. she happened

  860. to come to the part

  861. of the field

  862. belonging to Boaz.

  863. I think that's significant

  864. that he says that.

  865. It sounds like

  866. it was a coincidence.

  867. But then why say it?

  868. In Proverbs 16.33,

  869. it says,

  870. the lot,

  871. you know,

  872. like dice,

  873. the lot is cast

  874. into the lap

  875. but its every decision

  876. is from the Lord.

  877. In other words,

  878. God directs things

  879. that even those

  880. that look like chance.

  881. By saying that she

  882. just so happened

  883. to come to the part

  884. of the field

  885. belonging to Boaz,

  886. I think the author

  887. means exactly the opposite.

  888. It's sort of

  889. tongue-in-cheek.

  890. It's a way of saying

  891. it was not just chance,

  892. that God is at work here

  893. and he was directing Ruth

  894. to just that part

  895. of the field.

  896. So Boaz comes from town

  897. in verse 4

  898. and he says to his workers,

  899. the Lord be with you

  900. and they answer,

  901. the Lord bless you.

  902. I mean,

  903. look at his interaction

  904. with them.

  905. We haven't been told

  906. anything about Boaz's character,

  907. just the fact that he's rich

  908. and that he's related

  909. to Naomi.

  910. But now by his actions,

  911. we are getting

  912. to know him here.

  913. And we notice some things

  914. right off the bat.

  915. He has a good relationship

  916. with his workers.

  917. And he is a follower

  918. of the Lord

  919. and just look at how

  920. he and his employees

  921. are blessing each other,

  922. talking about the Lord

  923. as they meet each other

  924. for the first time that day.

  925. blessing is one of the themes

  926. of this book.

  927. It's this subtle reminder

  928. that even as people

  929. are kind to each other,

  930. they are reflecting

  931. God's kindness

  932. and as they are blessing

  933. each other,

  934. God is blessing them.

  935. It's a small village

  936. and everyone is out there

  937. working at the harvest time

  938. and Boaz looks out

  939. and he sees this woman

  940. he doesn't know.

  941. It's a small town

  942. of Bethlehem.

  943. So he says to his foreman,

  944. whose is that young woman?

  945. He doesn't say,

  946. who is that young woman?

  947. He says,

  948. whose is that young woman?

  949. In other words,

  950. what is her relationship

  951. to someone else

  952. that I know?

  953. Who does she belong to?

  954. Now one reason

  955. he might be asking that

  956. is because she's a foreigner,

  957. but it's also maybe

  958. because she's all alone

  959. out there.

  960. She's not working

  961. with anybody else.

  962. She doesn't apparently

  963. belong to anyone.

  964. But it also anticipates

  965. that she does belong

  966. to Naomi,

  967. who is his relative.

  968. Look what the servant

  969. says in verse 6.

  970. He says,

  971. she is the young Moabite woman

  972. who came back with Naomi

  973. from the country of Moab.

  974. See how he says that twice?

  975. Moab?

  976. It's like he's saying,

  977. she's from Moab.

  978. You can just imagine

  979. the thoughts going

  980. through his head.

  981. Like, what is Boaz

  982. going to say about this?

  983. Right?

  984. We've got this Moabite.

  985. She's really sketchy.

  986. She had asked for permission

  987. to glean and worked

  988. all morning.

  989. And the end of verse 7

  990. is a little bit difficult

  991. to understand.

  992. No one really knows

  993. what it means,

  994. but I think what it means

  995. is that she had been

  996. working hard in the field

  997. all morning,

  998. and just now,

  999. just before Boaz arrived,

1000. she had taken a brief rest.

1001. Now look at how Boaz

  1002. responds to Ruth

  1003. once he realizes

  1004. that she's in need.

  1005. He does nine things

  1006. for her.

  1007. He doesn't toss her

1008. a little bit of money

1009. and send her on her way.

1010. He does nine substantial things

  1011. for her,

  1012. each one kinder

  1013. than the one before.

  1014. First, in verse 8,

  1015. he calls her,

  1016. my daughter.

  1017. He's a rich,

  1018. Israelite man,

  1019. and she's a poor

  1020. Moabite woman,

1021. but he makes her feel

  1022. comfortable and accepted.

1023. He could say to her,

1024. what are you doing here?

  1025. But he doesn't.

  1026. He calls her,

  1027. my daughter.

  1028. It's kind.

  1029. It's a family term.

  1030. It's a term of acceptance.

  1031. Second,

1032. at the end of verse 8,

  1033. he asks her

1034. to stay in his field.

  1035. It's not just

  1036. that he's going

  1037. to tolerate her.

  1038. It's not just

  1039. that he's going

  1040. to overlook her presence

  1041. even though he wishes

  1042. that she weren't there.

  1043. He wants her there.

  1044. He wants to make

  1045. her feel comfortable.

  1046. There may not be

  1047. that much food

  1048. to go around.

  1049. There may not be

  1050. that much grain

1051. on the edges of the field

  1052. or that's left over

  1053. in the field.

  1054. What about all

  1055. the Israelite poor people?

  1056. Shouldn't the Israelites

  1057. have first dibs

  1058. on this food?

  1059. It's Israelite territory

  1060. after all.

  1061. Is it right

  1062. that some of it

1063. would go to a Moabite girl?

  1064. Yes.

1065. The third thing he does

1066. is also in verse 8.

  1067. He tells her

  1068. to stay close

  1069. to his young women.

  1070. Not only will this

  1071. keep her safe,

1072. but it also gives her

  1073. a sense of identity.

  1074. Instead of working

1075. in the field all alone,

  1076. she's with someone.

  1077. She's not a lonely

  1078. foreign girl

1079. in a sea of strangers.

1080. She belongs to that group

  1081. with those harvesters.

  1082. She's with Boaz's

  1083. female workers.

  1084. See, he's going

  1085. above and beyond here.

1086. All he has to do

  1087. in order to obey

  1088. the Mosaic law

1089. is just leave her alone.

1090. That's all he has to do.

1091. All he has to do

  1092. is allow her

  1093. to just stick

  1094. on the edges

  1095. of the field

1096. and be one of those

  1097. poor people

  1098. that comes

1099. to see what she can find.

  1100. But he is taking

  1101. a particular interest

  1102. in her welfare.

  1103. Fourth,

  1104. verse 9,

  1105. he specifically

  1106. instructs the young men

  1107. not to touch her.

  1108. You can imagine

  1109. in some work environments

  1110. what women

1111. have to put up with

  1112. as far as men

  1113. hassling them.

  1114. This word touch

  1115. in Hebrew

  1116. often has a sexual

  1117. connotation to it.

1118. So we don't know here

  1119. if Boaz is concerned

  1120. about guys

  1121. pushing her around

  1122. or if he's

  1123. concerned about

  1124. something more serious

  1125. than that.

  1126. Remember,

  1127. we're in the time

  1128. of the judges here.

  1129. It's a particularly

  1130. dangerous time

  1131. for women.

  1132. The Levite

  1133. and his concubine

  1134. who were raped

  1135. and murdered,

  1136. that took place

  1137. seven miles

  1138. from this spot.

  1139. Seven miles.

1140. And it was this town

  1141. that they were

  1142. leaving from

  1143. when they tried

  1144. to get back

  1145. to their home.

  1146. Here is Ruth,

  1147. a foreign girl,

  1148. right,

  1149. with no one

  1150. to protect her.

  1151. She's a prime

  1152. target,

  1153. but Boaz

  1154. explicitly

  1155. calls his guys

  1156. over and says,

  1157. you leave her

  1158. alone.

  1159. Fifth,

  1160. in verse 9,

  1161. he says that

  1162. if she's thirsty,

  1163. she can drink water

  1164. from what the male

  1165. servants have drawn.

  1166. That's a little bit

  1167. unusual because

  1168. in ancient Israel,

  1169. it was the foreigners

  1170. who were supposed

1171. to do the manual labor

  1172. and draw water

  1173. for the Israelites.

  1174. Not only that,

  1175. but in that culture,

  1176. it was the women

  1177. who were supposed

  1178. to draw the water

  1179. for the men.

  1180. Now Boaz

  1181. is starting to get

  1182. a little carried away

  1183. because he's saying

  1184. that his men

  1185. are going to draw

  1186. water for her.

  1187. He has so far

  1188. just shown

  1189. basic human decency,

  1190. but now

  1191. he's giving her

  1192. his stuff.

  1193. And she can't

  1194. believe her ears.

  1195. It's shocking

  1196. generosity,

  1197. and she doesn't know

1198. what to make of it.

  1199. And so she says

  1200. in verse 10,

  1201. I'm a foreigner.

  1202. Why are you

  1203. treating me like this?

  1204. She expected

  1205. to be treated

  1206. like an outsider.

  1207. Here's this

  1208. close-knit community

  1209. of Bethlehem.

  1210. This isn't the way

  1211. they treat Moabites

  1212. and outsiders.

  1213. And Boaz answers

  1214. that he has heard

1215. how good she has been

  1216. to Naomi.

  1217. It's interesting.

  1218. Even though Naomi

  1219. was so bitter,

  1220. she evidently

  1221. had told people

  1222. how her daughter-in-law

  1223. had forsaken her life

  1224. in Moab

  1225. and come back

  1226. with her

1227. to take care of her.

  1228. So in verse 12,

  1229. Boaz blesses her

  1230. and he says

  1231. something very

  1232. significant.

  1233. He says,

  1234. May a full reward

  1235. be given you

  1236. by the Lord,

  1237. the God of Israel,

  1238. under whose wings

  1239. you have come

  1240. to take refuge.

  1241. See,

  1242. whatever Ruth

  1243. thought she would

  1244. find when she

  1245. came to Israel,

  1246. and we know

  1247. she thought

  1248. she was coming

  1249. to starvation

  1250. and death,

  1251. she has actually

  1252. come,

  1253. Boaz says,

  1254. to find refuge

  1255. under the wings

  1256. of God.

  1257. She has given up

  1258. the gods of Moab

  1259. and committed herself

  1260. to the Lord,

  1261. the God of Israel,

  1262. and whether she knew

  1263. it or not,

  1264. she was coming

  1265. to Israel

  1266. to find refuge

  1267. under the wings

  1268. of God.

1269. And what do the wings

  1270. of God look like?

  1271. They look like Boaz.

1272. Do you see the link?

  1273. This is Boaz

  1274. saying this.

  1275. He has just done

  1276. all of these things

  1277. for her,

1278. and he's not done yet.

  1279. And he is saying,

  1280. when I do these

  1281. things for you,

  1282. when I show this

  1283. kindness for you,

  1284. when I welcome you

  1285. and protect you

  1286. and give you water

  1287. that my young men

  1288. have drawn,

  1289. this is the wings

  1290. of the Lord,

  1291. the God of Israel.

  1292. He says,

  1293. I am doing these

  1294. things on behalf

  1295. of God,

  1296. and when you

  1297. come under

  1298. my protection,

  1299. you come under

  1300. God's protection.

  1301. My goodness toward you

  1302. is done on behalf

  1303. of God.

  1304. That is incredibly

  1305. significant.

  1306. And she cannot believe

  1307. Boaz's kindness.

  1308. Look what she says

  1309. in verse 13.

  1310. She says,

  1311. you have comforted me

  1312. and you have spoken

  1313. kindly to your servant

1314. even though I am not

  1315. one of your servants.

  1316. Now in Hebrew,

  1317. there are a number

  1318. of different words

  1319. for servant.

  1320. And the word

  1321. that she uses here

  1322. when she says,

  1323. I am not even

  1324. one of your servants

  1325. and you are being

  1326. so nice to me.

1327. The word that she uses

  1328. for servant

  1329. is the lowest word.

1330. It is the bottom rung.

  1331. It is the lowest

  1332. position of society.

  1333. This kind of servant

  1334. is so low

  1335. in social status

  1336. that they were not

  1337. even able

  1338. to become a wife.

  1339. They could be

  1340. a concubine

  1341. like a mistress.

  1342. They were the ones

  1343. who,

  1344. you know,

  1345. like with Abraham

  1346. and Hagar,

  1347. if your wife

  1348. couldn't conceive,

  1349. you could go

  1350. into your servant

  1351. and have a child

  1352. through her.

  1353. They were the ones

1354. who did the manual labor

  1355. grinding grain

  1356. and washing people's feet,

  1357. all the dirty jobs

  1358. that nobody else wanted.

  1359. She says,

  1360. look,

1361. I am not even there.

  1362. I am not even

  1363. like one of your

  1364. lowest servants.

  1365. And yet,

  1366. you are being

  1367. so good to me.

  1368. It's incredible

  1369. that Boaz

  1370. would treat her

  1371. this way.

  1372. But Boaz

  1373. is not done yet.

  1374. He's already done

  1375. five things for her.

  1376. Look at number six

  1377. in verse 14.

  1378. He invites her

  1379. to the noon meal.

  1380. Now,

  1381. the meal

  1382. wasn't just

  1383. a time to eat.

  1384. It communicated

  1385. something socially

  1386. about who belonged.

  1387. And Boaz

  1388. is there

  1389. eating with his workers

1390. and he says to Ruth,

  1391. come over here.

  1392. She may have been

  1393. keeping her distance

  1394. because she didn't

  1395. really belong with them.

  1396. She's just,

  1397. you know,

  1398. she's just one

1399. of the other poor people.

  1400. But he says,

  1401. come here,

  1402. come.

  1403. Come join our meal.

1404. And he passes her food

  1405. and it says

  1406. that there's

  1407. a dipping sauce.

  1408. And that means

  1409. that he's not just

  1410. kind of giving her

  1411. the leftover scraps,

  1412. but she is fully

  1413. invited into this meal.

  1414. And that means

  1415. she probably

1416. didn't have her own lunch.

  1417. What was she

1418. going to eat that day?

  1419. But she not only

  1420. had plenty

  1421. to satisfy her,

  1422. but she had

  1423. some left over.

  1424. Seventh,

  1425. at the end

  1426. of verse 15,

  1427. he says that she

  1428. can glean

  1429. even among

  1430. the sheaves.

  1431. Now,

  1432. the way that

  1433. the gleaning

  1434. normally worked

  1435. is that the harvesters

  1436. would go through

  1437. the field

1438. and as they picked up,

  1439. they would cut

  1440. the grain,

  1441. the stalks of grain

1442. and they would tie it

  1443. into bundles

  1444. and some of them

  1445. would accidentally

  1446. be dropped

  1447. and then you could

  1448. go through after

  1449. and you could see

  1450. what you could find.

  1451. But what they're doing

  1452. is,

  1453. Boaz is telling her

  1454. that she's allowed

  1455. to glean

  1456. even among the grain

  1457. that was already

  1458. harvested.

  1459. That's not gleaning.

  1460. He's saying,

  1461. don't make her

  1462. go through the field

  1463. looking for scraps.

1464. Just let her go over

  1465. to the piles

  1466. that you've already cut

  1467. and she can just

1468. kind of get the grain

  1469. from there.

  1470. Eighth,

  1471. he protects her dignity.

  1472. Look at the end

  1473. of verse 15,

1474. and do not reproach her.

1475. Not only were the young men

1476. not allowed to forbid her

  1477. for doing this,

1478. but they were not allowed

1479. to humiliate or tease her.

  1480. No snide comments.

  1481. No remarks

  1482. about her ethnicity.

  1483. The workers

  1484. are supposed

  1485. to accept her

  1486. and treat her

  1487. with kindness.

  1488. And finally,

  1489. ninth,

  1490. here is where Boaz

  1491. just really goes overboard.

  1492. He tells his workers,

  1493. you know what,

1494. just pull out the grain

  1495. and leave it lying

  1496. on the ground

1497. for her to pick up.

  1498. I mean,

  1499. now they're purposefully

  1500. dropping bundles

  1501. on the ground

  1502. and saying,

  1503. you know,

  1504. over there.

  1505. So,

  1506. it's no surprise

  1507. that at the end

  1508. of the day,

  1509. when she beat out

  1510. what she had gleaned

  1511. in verse 17,

  1512. it was about

  1513. an ephah of barley.

  1514. Now,

  1515. an ephah is

  1516. one-tenth of a homer,

  1517. and a homer

  1518. is how much

  1519. a donkey can carry.

  1520. So,

  1521. scholars

  1522. guess

  1523. that an ephah

  1524. is something

  1525. about 30 to 50 pounds

  1526. of grain.

  1527. So,

  1528. she didn't go home

  1529. that night

  1530. with a little bag,

  1531. you know,

  1532. oh,

  1533. look,

  1534. I got enough

  1535. for a couple

  1536. of days.

  1537. She is hoisting

  1538. a massive bag

  1539. of grain

  1540. on her back

  1541. and going back

  1542. to Bethlehem

  1543. to her mother-in-law,

  1544. probably about

  1545. two weeks worth

  1546. of work.

  1547. It was so much

  1548. grain that she got.

  1549. When she gets home,

  1550. she does two things.

  1551. First,

  1552. she shows Naomi

  1553. what she had gleaned,

  1554. and,

1555. it says at the end

  1556. of verse 18,

  1557. she gave her

  1558. what food

  1559. she had left over

  1560. after being satisfied.

1561. This is the same wording

  1562. that we saw

  1563. at the lunch

  1564. in verse 14.

  1565. This isn't the grain

  1566. that she gleaned

  1567. in the field.

  1568. This is the lunch

  1569. that Boaz

  1570. had given her.

  1571. And I think

  1572. that means

  1573. that Naomi

  1574. had not eaten

  1575. anything all day.

  1576. But now,

  1577. Ruth is providing

  1578. for her

  1579. out of what

  1580. Boaz

  1581. had given

  1582. to her.

  1583. and Naomi

  1584. doesn't have

  1585. to be hungry.

  1586. Ruth comes home,

  1587. not just with

  1588. a gigantic bag

  1589. of groceries,

  1590. but with dinner.

  1591. And her mother-in-law

  1592. said to her,

  1593. where did you

  1594. glean today?

  1595. Blessed be the man

  1596. who took notice

  1597. of you.

  1598. See,

  1599. Naomi knows

  1600. something is up here.

1601. You don't go to glean

  1602. and bring home

  1603. that much food.

  1604. And Ruth tells her

  1605. that it was Boaz

  1606. who had helped her

  1607. and in 2.20,

  1608. Naomi now says

  1609. something very

  1610. significant.

  1611. She says,

  1612. May he be blessed

  1613. by the Lord

  1614. whose kindness

  1615. has not forsaken

  1616. the living

  1617. or the dead.

  1618. Kindness.

  1619. May Boaz

  1620. be blessed

  1621. by the Lord

  1622. whose kindness

  1623. has not forsaken

  1624. us or our

  1625. dead husbands.

  1626. Naomi interprets

  1627. Boaz's kindness

  1628. to Ruth

  1629. as the way

  1630. that the Lord

  1631. has shown

  1632. his kindness.

  1633. When she hears

  1634. what Boaz

  1635. has done for Ruth,

  1636. she gives the credit

  1637. to the Lord.

  1638. Now there's

  1639. a little crack

  1640. in the hard shell

  1641. of Naomi's bitterness.

  1642. Maybe

  1643. the Lord

  1644. has not abandoned

  1645. them after all.

  1646. In verse 21,

  1647. Ruth says,

  1648. Well,

  1649. besides,

  1650. Boaz said to me,

  1651. You keep close

  1652. by my young men

  1653. until they have

  1654. finished all the harvest.

  1655. Boaz.

  1656. But that's not

  1657. what Boaz said

  1658. back in verse 8.

  1659. He had told her

1660. to stay with the young women.

  1661. But see,

  1662. now Ruth says,

  1663. Well,

1664. he told me to stay

  1665. with his young men.

  1666. I wonder.

  1667. Maybe she has

  1668. young men

  1669. on the mind.

  1670. Maybe she longs

  1671. for a young man

  1672. because she knows

  1673. that in the end

1674. that's the only real hope

1675. she has for a future.

  1676. But Naomi gently

  1677. corrects her

  1678. in verse 22

  1679. and says,

  1680. Yeah,

  1681. you stay with

  1682. his young women.

  1683. Then you'll be safe.

  1684. In other words,

  1685. I think she's saying,

  1686. Ruth,

1687. don't get your hopes up.

  1688. You stay with

  1689. his young women.

  1690. So,

  1691. verse 23,

  1692. She kept close

  1693. to the young women

  1694. until the end

  1695. of the barley

  1696. and wheat harvest

  1697. and she lived

  1698. with her mother-in-law.

  1699. So,

  1700. let's make a few

  1701. overall observations

  1702. and we'll kind of

  1703. put this together

  1704. and talk about

  1705. the main point.

  1706. First of all,

  1707. the word kindness,

  1708. chesed in Hebrew,

1709. is a very important word

  1710. in the Old Testament.

  1711. It's the word

  1712. that we talked about

  1713. last week.

  1714. It's sometimes

  1715. translated in our Bibles

  1716. as faithful

  1717. or loyal,

  1718. good,

  1719. merciful.

  1720. It describes

  1721. God's actions

  1722. toward his people

  1723. because he is connected

  1724. to them in relationship.

  1725. God acts

  1726. for the benefit

  1727. of his people

1728. not because they deserve it

  1729. and not because

  1730. it's going to benefit

  1731. him in any way

  1732. but because it is

  1733. in his nature

  1734. to do so.

  1735. And throughout

  1736. the Old Testament,

  1737. because God shows

  1738. his kindness

  1739. to his people,

  1740. he expects his people

  1741. to show the same

  1742. kindness toward each other.

  1743. In 2 Samuel 9,

  1744. David says,

  1745. is there not still

  1746. someone of the house

  1747. of Saul

  1748. that I may show

  1749. the kindness

  1750. of God to him?

  1751. In Micah 6, 8,

1752. this is what the Lord

  1753. requires of you

  1754. to do justice

  1755. and to love kindness

  1756. and to walk humbly

  1757. with God.

  1758. In Hosea chapter 4,

    Hosea 4 chapter mention

  1759. God is angry

  1760. with Israel

  1761. because there is

  1762. no faithfulness

  1763. or kindness

  1764. or knowledge

  1765. of God

  1766. in the land.

  1767. This key word,

  1768. this key word

  1769. kindness occurs

  1770. exactly three times

1771. in the book of Ruth.

1772. We saw it last week

  1773. in chapter 1

  1774. and 1, 8,

  1775. when Naomi tells

  1776. her daughter-in-law,

  1777. may the Lord

  1778. deal kindly with you

  1779. as you have dealt

  1780. with the dead

  1781. and with me.

  1782. Naomi is linking

  1783. God's character

  1784. with good character.

  1785. Ruth has sacrificed

  1786. her future for Naomi.

  1787. That's something

  1788. that God would do

  1789. because God

  1790. is sacrificial

  1791. and kindness

  1792. comes from Ruth

  1793. ultimately

  1794. because God

  1795. is kind.

  1796. And the second time

  1797. we see this word

  1798. kindness

1799. is here in this chapter

  1800. in 2.20

  1801. when Naomi says,

  1802. may Boaz

  1803. be blessed

  1804. by the Lord

  1805. whose kindness

  1806. has not forsaken

  1807. the living

  1808. or the dead.

  1809. What does Naomi mean

  1810. when she says

  1811. that God

  1812. has shown

  1813. his kindness

  1814. to them?

  1815. Well,

  1816. first of all,

  1817. one of the things

  1818. that's obviously

  1819. going in this story

  1820. is God's providence.

  1821. In 1.6,

  1822. Naomi hears

  1823. that God

  1824. has sent food

  1825. to his people.

  1826. In 1.22,

  1827. Naomi and Ruth

  1828. happen to arrive

  1829. just at the beginning

  1830. of the barley harvest.

  1831. Well,

  1832. that's very fortunate.

  1833. If they had arrived

  1834. any earlier,

  1835. they would have starved.

1836. And if they had arrived

  1837. any later,

  1838. they would have missed

  1839. their chance to glean.

  1840. In 2.3,

  1841. Ruth just so

  1842. happened

1843. to come to the part

  1844. of the field

  1845. belonging to Boaz.

  1846. She didn't even realize

  1847. that she was coming

  1848. to the one person

  1849. who would be willing

  1850. to help her.

  1851. She's gleaning

  1852. and kind of working

  1853. through the field

1854. and all of a sudden

  1855. here's this guy

  1856. being nice to her.

  1857. And it isn't until

  1858. she gets home later

  1859. that evening

  1860. that she finds out

  1861. that he is

  1862. from her father-in-law's

  1863. family.

  1864. Boaz was just

  1865. the right man

  1866. for Ruth to meet.

1867. If he had been kind

  1868. but not a kinsman,

  1869. he could not have

  1870. helped her long term

  1871. as we'll see.

1872. But if he had been

  1873. a kinsman

  1874. but not kind,

  1875. then what good

  1876. would that have done?

  1877. The second way

  1878. that God has shown

  1879. his kindness

  1880. to Ruth

  1881. is not just

  1882. through his

  1883. prevailing providence

  1884. but through Boaz.

  1885. When Boaz

  1886. accepted Ruth

  1887. and protected her

  1888. and gave her food,

  1889. Naomi interprets

  1890. that as the kindness

  1891. of God.

  1892. And through Boaz,

  1893. God was kind

  1894. to Ruth

  1895. and kind to Naomi

  1896. and to their dead

  1897. husbands too.

  1898. God has not

  1899. forsaken them

  1900. after all.

  1901. The Lord has been

  1902. working behind the scenes

  1903. in his providence

  1904. in invisible ways

  1905. but he has been

  1906. also working

  1907. in very visible

  1908. and physical ways

  1909. through Boaz.

  1910. And Boaz

  1911. recognizes that

  1912. as well.

  1913. He does this

  1914. intentionally.

  1915. He takes it seriously

  1916. because in 2.12

  1917. he says to Ruth,

  1918. may you be rewarded

  1919. by God

  1920. under whose wings

  1921. you have come

  1922. to take refuge.

  1923. God does not

  1924. have physical wings

  1925. that Ruth

  1926. could come

  1927. to hide under.

  1928. But he has Boaz.

  1929. Those

  1930. are his boots

  1931. on the ground

  1932. to care for Ruth

  1933. on his behalf.

  1934. So here I think

  1935. is the main point

  1936. of Ruth 2.

  1937. And we're just

  1938. taking snippets

  1939. of the book

  1940. as we work

  1941. toward the conclusion

  1942. in chapter 3 and 4

  1943. but here I think

  1944. is the contribution

  1945. of this chapter.

  1946. God's people

  1947. provide for the needy

  1948. because God

  1949. cares for the needy.

  1950. His values

  1951. are reflected

  1952. in the actions

  1953. of Boaz

  1954. and like a mirror

  1955. Boaz's actions

  1956. tell us something

  1957. about God.

  1958. It's trickle down

  1959. kindness.

  1960. This isn't

  1961. survival of the fittest.

  1962. The only explanation

  1963. for Boaz

  1964. to act

  1965. against his own

  1966. self-interest

  1967. to care for someone

  1968. beside himself

  1969. to act this way

  1970. toward Ruth

  1971. is that his values

  1972. have been shaped

  1973. by God.

  1974. God cares

  1975. for the needy

  1976. and he wants us

  1977. to care for them

  1978. as well.

  1979. And we see this

  1980. throughout the Old Testament.

1981. In the book of Exodus

  1982. it says

  1983. you shall not

  1984. pervert the justice

  1985. due the poor.

  1986. And it says

  1987. in the seventh day

  1988. leave your land

  1989. fallow

  1990. so that the poor

  1991. can eat from it.

1992. In the book of Leviticus

  1993. it says

  1994. you should not

  1995. take advantage

  1996. of the poor

  1997. and turn them

  1998. into slaves.

  1999. In the book

  2000. of Deuteronomy

  2001. it says

  2002. if any of your

  2003. brothers become poor

  2004. you shall not

  2005. harden your heart

  2006. or shut your hand

  2007. against your poor brother.

  2008. And it says

  2009. you shall open

  2010. wide your hand

  2011. to your brother

  2012. to the needy

  2013. and to the poor

  2014. in your land.

  2015. And it says

  2016. you shall not

  2017. oppress a hired worker

  2018. who is poor

  2019. and needy.

  2020. Why?

  2021. Because

  2022. you shall remember

2023. that you were a slave

2024. in the land of Egypt

  2025. therefore

  2026. I command you

  2027. to do this.

  2028. What about

  2029. in the New Testament?

  2030. In James

    James 1 chapter mention

  2031. chapter 1

  2032. 27

  2033. it says

  2034. worship

  2035. that is pure

  2036. and undefiled

  2037. before God

  2038. the Father

  2039. is this

  2040. to visit orphans

  2041. and widows

  2042. in their affliction.

  2043. And in chapter 2

  2044. James says

  2045. if a brother

  2046. or sister

  2047. is poorly clothed

  2048. and lacking

  2049. in daily food

  2050. and one of you

  2051. says to them

  2052. go in peace

  2053. be warmed

  2054. and filled

  2055. without giving them

  2056. the things needed

  2057. for the body

  2058. what good is that?

  2059. God cares

  2060. for the vulnerable

  2061. he cares

  2062. for those

  2063. who have

  2064. no resources

  2065. without friends

  2066. without the ability

  2067. to fend for themselves

  2068. and because

  2069. Boaz

  2070. follows God

  2071. Boaz cares

  2072. about those things too.

  2073. we are faced

  2074. with a constant

  2075. temptation

  2076. to come up

  2077. with excuses

  2078. for ourselves

  2079. from caring

  2080. for those

  2081. in need.

  2082. I mean

  2083. you know

  2084. that's what the

  2085. that's what the

  2086. liberal mainline

  2087. church over there

  2088. does.

  2089. you know

  2090. they have the

  2091. wrong priorities

  2092. but we're

  2093. interested in

  2094. the gospel.

  2095. Or you know

  2096. what the

  2097. politicians are

  2098. there to take

  2099. care of that

  2100. kind of thing

  2101. or you know

  2102. what those

  2103. people

  2104. they would

  2105. make better

  2106. choices.

  2107. But you know

  2108. Boaz

  2109. he could have

  2110. done this

  2111. he had clear

  2112. biblical guidelines

  2113. on how he

  2114. should have

  2115. helped Ruth

  2116. he had clear

  2117. guidelines from

  2118. scripture

  2119. he should have

  2120. let her glean

  2121. at the edge

  2122. of the field

  2123. and if he

  2124. had done that

  2125. he could have

  2126. gone home

  2127. that night

  2128. with a clear

  2129. conscience.

  2130. He could have

  2131. said to his

  2132. friends

  2133. you know what

  2134. there was a

  2135. poor widow

  2136. there today

  2137. and I let

  2138. her glean

  2139. in my field

  2140. and they

  2141. said well

  2142. done Boaz

  2143. you did

  2144. exactly what

  2145. the Bible

  2146. said you

  2147. should do.

  2148. But he

  2149. went way

  2150. beyond that

  2151. he spoke

  2152. kindly to her

  2153. he gave her

  2154. food and water

  2155. he protected

  2156. her

  2157. he included

  2158. her

  2159. he accepted

  2160. her

  2161. and he made

  2162. her work

  2163. in the field

  2164. incredibly

  2165. successful.

  2166. we have

  2167. the opportunity

  2168. here

  2169. in this body

  2170. to be a

  2171. community of

  2172. kindness

  2173. toward each

  2174. other

  2175. where we

  2176. accept

  2177. and care

  2178. for each

  2179. other

  2180. especially

  2181. those

  2182. among us

  2183. who are

  2184. vulnerable

  2185. and then

  2186. that kindness

  2187. that we

  2188. show

  2189. just sort

  2190. of

  2191. it just

  2192. sort of

  2193. spills

  2194. out of

  2195. here

  2196. into the

  2197. community

  2198. around us

  2199. it just

  2200. can't help

  2201. it

  2202. there's

  2203. too much

  2204. it spills

  2205. out of our

  2206. church

  2207. into the

  2208. community

  2209. around

  2210. and we

  2211. act like

  2212. Boaz

  2213. and more

  2214. importantly

  2215. than that

  2216. we act

  2217. like God

  2218. we get

  2219. to know

  2220. each other

  2221. and our

  2222. neighbors

  2223. do you remember

  2224. when Boaz

  2225. looked around

  2226. the field

  2227. and he said

  2228. who's that

  2229. he didn't

  2230. recognize Ruth

  2231. so he asked

  2232. about her

  2233. this is an

  2234. example to us

  2235. to have

  2236. sensitive

  2237. antenna up

  2238. to look for

  2239. people who

  2240. are struggling

  2241. and might

  2242. need our

  2243. help

  2244. to figure

  2245. out what

  2246. they need

  2247. to treat

  2248. them with

  2249. dignity

  2250. to do

  2251. what we

  2252. can to

  2253. protect

  2254. them

  2255. to include

  2256. them in

  2257. our group

  2258. although that

  2259. may cost

  2260. us something

  2261. to give

  2262. them some

  2263. place to

  2264. belong

  2265. and to

  2266. share what

  2267. we have

  2268. with them

  2269. we don't

  2270. do these

  2271. things because

  2272. we feel

  2273. guilty

  2274. because of

  2275. some sort

  2276. of political

  2277. reason

  2278. we do

  2279. them because

  2280. we are the

  2281. people of

  2282. God

  2283. and we have

  2284. been shaped

  2285. by his

  2286. values

  2287. God's

  2288. people provide

  2289. for the

  2290. needy

  2291. because God

  2292. cares for

  2293. the needy

  2294. we are getting

  2295. to know

  2296. God in the

  2297. book of

  2298. Ruth

  2299. he shows

  2300. kindness to

  2301. his people

  2302. so his

  2303. people show

  2304. kindness to

  2305. each other

  2306. God cares

  2307. for the

  2308. needy and

  2309. the vulnerable

  2310. he cares

  2311. especially

  2312. for the

  2313. needy and

  2314. the vulnerable

  2315. if God

  2316. is caring

  2317. for Ruth

  2318. and Naomi

  2319. then maybe

  2320. things aren't

  2321. so bleak

  2322. for them

  2323. after all

  2324. but he's

  2325. not done

  2326. yet

  2327. and next

  2328. week when we

  2329. look at chapter

  2330. three and

  2331. four that we'll

  2332. see that he

  2333. is also a

  2334. redeeming God

  2335. does it matter

  2336. in chapter

  2337. one if God

  2338. is sacrificial

  2339. that he

  2340. sacrifices

  2341. himself

  2342. to take care

  2343. of other

  2344. people

  2345. does it matter

  2346. in chapter

  2347. two if God

  2348. looks and

  2349. finds needy

  2350. people who

  2351. have no

  2352. other recourse

  2353. and no way

  2354. to provide

  2355. for themselves

  2356. and he says

  2357. I will provide

  2358. for you

  2359. it does

  2360. matter

  2361. it does

  2362. matter

  2363. if God

  2364. is that

  2365. way

  2366. that's

  2367. the kind

  2368. of God

  2369. we serve

  2370. so as we

  2371. look at

  2372. Ruth

  2373. three and

  2374. four next

  2375. week

  2376. we'll

  2377. conclude

  2378. with God

  2379. as a

  2380. redeeming

  2381. God

  2382. let's

  2383. pray

  2384. father

  2385. we're

  2386. grateful

  2387. that you

  2388. have

  2389. revealed

  2390. yourself

  2391. to us

  2392. we could

  2393. have

  2394. been

  2395. left

  2396. to look

  2397. at the

  2398. natural

  2399. world

  2400. around

  2401. us

  2402. and guess

  2403. what you

  2404. were

  2405. like

  2406. we

  2407. thank you

  2408. that you

  2409. revealed

  2410. yourself

  2411. to us

  2412. as a

  2413. good

  2414. kind

  2415. God

  2416. who

  2417. loves

  2418. us

  2419. we

  2420. pray for

  2421. the needy

  2422. and the

  2423. vulnerable

  2424. in our

  2425. church

  2426. today

  2427. who you

  2428. love

  2429. and care

  2430. for

  2431. we pray

  2432. that you

  2433. would give

  2434. them hope

  2435. we pray

  2436. that you

  2437. would provide

  2438. for their

  2439. needs

  2440. we pray

  2441. that you

  2442. would

  2443. comfort

  2444. them

  2445. in their

  2446. affliction

  2447. we pray

  2448. that you

  2449. would give

  2450. them

  2451. their

  2452. daily

  2453. bread

  2454. and we

  2455. pray that

  2456. you would

  2457. do that

  2458. through us

  2459. it is

  2460. not

  2461. easy

  2462. for us

  2463. to act

  2464. like

  2465. Boaz

  2466. what is

  2467. easy

  2468. Lord

  2469. is for

  2470. us

  2471. to do

  2472. the

  2473. bare

  2474. minimum

  2475. and to

  2476. make

  2477. excuses

  2478. and so

  2479. we pray

  2480. that by

  2481. the power

  2482. of your

  2483. spirit

  2484. we would

  2485. be more

  2486. than our

  2487. basest

  2488. instincts

  2489. that we

  2490. would be

  2491. shaped as

  2492. your

  2493. people

  2494. that we

  2495. would be

  2496. so informed

  2497. by your

  2498. values

  2499. and what

  2500. you care

  2501. about

  2502. that we

  2503. act in

  2504. radically

  2505. different

  2506. ways

  2507. than the

  2508. people

  2509. around us

  2510. in this

  2511. world

  2512. we want

  2513. to be

  2514. like you

  2515. and we

  2516. want to

  2517. love what

  2518. you love

  2519. and hate

  2520. what you

  2521. hate

  2522. and we

  2523. pray that

  2524. you would

  2525. give us

  2526. the strength

  2527. to act

  2528. beyond our

  2529. own selfish

  2530. impulses

  2531. and to

  2532. be a

  2533. people

  2534. who

  2535. reflect

  2536. your

  2537. good

  2538. and

  2539. gracious

  2540. character

  2541. we

  2542. worship

  2543. you

  2544. this

  2545. morning

  2546. and we

  2547. pray for

  2548. your help

  2549. in Jesus

  2550. name

  2551. amen
