  1. And if you have a Bible, I invite you to open to the book of Obadiah.

  2. Maybe a little bit of a head-scratcher.

  3. Obadiah, where is that thing at?

  4. It's in the Old Testament towards the back end of it.

  5. So maybe the way to do it is to find Matthew and start going back to the left a little bit.

  6. It's right after the book of Amos, right before the book of Jonah.

  7. I think it's on 918 if you have one of the hardback ESV Bibles from the pew.

  8. As you're finding this, I want to invite you to kind of take a journey back in time together this morning.

  9. Time of the people of Israel, God's people, who have just experienced the unthinkable.

  10. An extraordinary army of a foreign superpower has arrived at their doorstep.

  11. They've made it to the nation's capital.

  12. They've torn down the gates of Jerusalem and ripped apart the walls.

  13. They've neutralized and captured and killed the mighty men of the city and the country.

  14. They're looting the treasury and all the valuable assets and the gold and silver and resources of God's people.

  15. Their house of worship is being burned to the ground.

  16. The temple of the living God.

  17. All the people of any value whatsoever, the nobility, the skilled craftsmen, the mighty warriors,

  18. are enslaved and deported to a foreign land.

  19. And all the poor who are left looking around at a nation in utter ruin.

  20. Jeremiah describes a scene in the book of Lamentations talking about weeping and wailing

  21. and Judah being carried into exile and the empty streets.

  22. But once flourishing nation now left a ghost town.

  23. There's no one to attend the festivals and the celebrations that God ordained for his people.

  24. We're talking, of course, about the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.

  25. When the armies of the foreign superpower Babylon came in, overthrew and destroyed the people of Israel,

  26. they devastated the nation.

  27. And we know that as we read the Bible, this was part of God's plan.

  28. He kept sending prophet after prophet, telling his people, repent, repent, repent.

  29. And finally, the day came when God judged his own people for their sins.

  30. The prophet Jeremiah continues in the book of Lamentation that Jerusalem remembers in the days of her affliction

  31. and wandering all the precious things that were hers from days of old.

  32. They think back in the midst of this rubble and they remember the height of the monarchy where David is just conquering foes left and right.

  33. And his son Solomon has wisdom that causes foreign nations to come just to get a glimpse,

  34. to hear a word of the king.

  35. And the wealth that Israel is acquiring and the beautiful temple of God,

  36. just a couple hundred years earlier, filled with his glory for the good of his people.

  37. And you think back farther and you remember that God had this mighty victory over Egypt

  38. when he freed his people from bondage to this foreign nation.

  39. And as they left, they plundered the Egyptians, taking all their wealth and their riches with them.

  40. And now, all of Israel's national pride, all of their hopes and dreams of a bright future,

  41. are lying in the rubble of a decimated city in the midst of a conquered people.

  42. Imagine what thoughts would be going through your mind on that day.

  43. Where is God?

  44. Where is our hope?

  45. Where do we go from here?

  46. It's into this context of carnage that the prophet Obadiah speaks.

  47. And it's not a word of hopelessness and despair.

  48. It is a word from the sovereign Lord of the universe,

  49. full of power and promise and coming judgment.

  50. It's a word not just for those people of Israel who laid in ruins,

  51. but for God's people today.

  52. So we're going to look at Obadiah together.

  53. The first 15 verses today will be our task.

  54. And the text, to give you an idea of where we're headed,

  55. the text is set up in the following way.

  56. Verse 1 provides a formal introduction.

  57. It says who's writing, who he's writing on behalf of, and who he's writing to.

  58. We'll spend a lot of time there because we've got to get the context of

  59. who's being written to and what's going on and why is God writing to this person.

  60. And then, following this formal introduction, verses 12 to 15,

  61. we see kind of a sentencing hearing in a court of law.

  62. There's a defendant who's been convicted of crimes

  63. and now is just awaiting the judgment, the punishment.

  64. Verses 2 to 9, we see the judgment.

  65. God is the judge.

  66. Edom is the criminal.

  67. And then in verses 10 to 15, we see the crimes that Edom has committed

  68. and being judged for.

  69. By the end,

  70. when we arrive together at verse 15,

  71. we'll see clearly the main thing that God is telling us in this text.

  72. So let's jump in.

  73. Verse 1.

  74. The vision of Obadiah.

  75. Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom.

  76. We have heard a report from the Lord

  77. and a messenger has been sent among the nations.

  78. First thing we see,

  79. the formal title,

  80. the vision of Obadiah.

  81. When we see this word vision,

  82. what we need to be thinking is

  83. that Obadiah has been given a special prophetic insight

  84. into a future event.

  85. God has given him clarity

  86. regarding the judgment of Edom.

  87. But who is this Obadiah guy anyway?

  88. Well, he's a prophet, of course,

  89. of Yahweh, the one true God.

  90. And I believe that he lived

  91. during and after the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

  92. The tricky thing with that is

  93. Obadiah is a common name,

  94. shows up all over the Bible,

  95. and it's hard to really nail down specifically

  96. where this guy was.

  97. Did another passage somewhere else

  98. reference his name?

  99. Or is this the only record we have

  100. of Obadiah,

  101. the prophet?

  102. I think this is the only place

  103. we have record of him.

  104. But what we can tell

  105. just by reading this book

  106. and understanding a little bit of the context,

  107. Obadiah is a faithful Jewish man.

  108. He's God-fearing.

  109. He loves the Lord.

  110. And he has a clear and profound grasp

  111. of Old Testament theology

  112. and who God is.

  113. And most importantly,

  114. he speaks authoritatively for God.

  115. That's the next thing we see in verse 1.

  116. Thus says the Lord God.

  117. It's this combo of two names of God,

  118. Adonai and Yahweh.

  119. And the combination Lord God

  120. tells us that this is speaking

  121. of God's supreme authority

  122. and sovereign power.

  123. God calls the shots.

  124. He's the boss.

  125. No one can oppose him in the end.

  126. And in this case,

  127. this statement,

  128. the Lord God,

  129. which is uniquely true of our God,

  130. the God of the Scriptures,

  131. he is the Lord God

  132. and there is no other.

  133. In this case,

  134. our sovereign king

  135. is speaking a message of judgment

  136. concerning Edom.

  137. Concerning Edom.

  138. And we see a name like Edom.

  139. I don't know about you.

  140. I start scratching my head.

  141. I don't know who this guy is.

  142. I'm not like a super history guy

  143. of the Bible.

  144. So I got to start doing some legwork

  145. and figuring out who this guy is.

  146. But it's important, right?

  147. Because the whole thing is for him.

  148. So we better do some work.

  149. We need to go all the way back

  150. to the time of Abraham,

  151. Isaac, and Jacob.

  152. Abraham, of course,

  153. was promised to be the father

  154. of many nations.

  155. God promised him a descendant

  156. even though he was old

  157. and his wife had no children.

  158. Isaac is born,

  159. the child of promise

  160. through whom God said

  161. he would bless the nations.

  162. This same Isaac

  163. marries a lady named Rebecca.

  164. Rebecca becomes pregnant

  165. after years of trying

  166. and she's pregnant

  167. with twin boys.

  168. During the hard pregnancy,

  169. she asks the Lord

  170. what's going on

  171. and God answers her.

  172. In Genesis 25, verse 23,

    Genesis 25:23

  173. he writes this,

  174. two nations are in your womb

  175. and two peoples from within you

  176. shall be divided.

  177. The one shall be stronger

  178. than the other

  179. and the older

  180. shall serve the younger.

  181. Of course, God is referring

  182. to Esau and Jacob,

  183. the twin children

  184. of Isaac and Rebecca.

  185. Well, one day,

  186. after a long day

  187. in the fields hunting for food,

  188. Esau comes in

  189. starving

  190. and sees his brother Jacob

  191. cooking stew

  192. and he says,

  193. give me some of that red stuff.

  194. Well, red

  195. sounds in Hebrew

  196. like the name

  197. Edom.

  198. And here we have our answer

  199. as to where this guy

  200. originates from.

  201. Esau,

  202. the son of Isaac and Rebecca,

  203. is Edom.

  204. Same guy.

  205. Jacob ends up

  206. giving him the soup

  207. for a little exchange.

  208. It's just the cost

  209. of his birthright.

  210. Then later on,

  211. we know Jacob steals

  212. his older brother's blessing

  213. through treachery

  214. and trickery.

  215. It's no wonder

  216. that Jacob's name

  217. means he cheats.

  218. Of course,

  219. after Jacob steals

  220. the blessing,

  221. Esau's mad,

  222. says,

  223. I'm going to kill

  224. my brother.

  225. So,

  226. Jacob flees.

  227. When he is gone

  228. in a foreign land,

  229. Genesis 32 tells us

  230. he wrestles with God

  231. and God gives him

  232. the new name,

  233. Israel.

  234. So,

  235. now we've got

  236. Esau and Jacob

  237. becoming Edom

  238. and Israel.

  239. And God's promise

  240. proves true.

  241. These two nations

  242. are at odds

  243. with each other

  244. from the womb

  245. and continue to be

  246. at odds.

  247. Israel wandering

  248. in the wilderness

  249. asks their brother

  250. Edom for safe passage

  251. through their land

  252. and Edom says,

  253. no.

  254. They refuse

  255. Israel passage.

  256. Numbers,

    Numbers 20:14

  257. chapter 20,

  258. verse 14.

  259. And later on,

  260. we see the great

  261. king David

  262. kills 18,000

  263. Edomites

  264. in the Valley of Salt

  265. and sets up

  266. military outposts

  267. throughout Edom's land,

  268. 2 Samuel 8.

  269. Hadad,

  270. the Edomite,

  271. becomes an adversary

  272. of King Solomon

  273. in judgment

  274. for Solomon's refusal

  275. to abide by the word

  276. of the Lord,

  277. 1 Kings 11.

  278. And then,

  279. in 2 Chronicles 28,

  280. we see that the Edomites

  281. again invade,

  282. defeat,

  283. and carry off

  284. the people of Judah.

  285. Long track record

  286. of conflict,

  287. violence,

  288. and bloodshed,

  289. and thievery,

  290. and deception.

  291. Two brothers

  292. rarely at peace,

  293. just like God promised.

  294. But Edom's treatment

  295. of Israel,

  296. God's own people

  297. demanded judgment.

  298. They weren't just

  299. unrepentant,

  300. it kept growing worse.

  301. And that is why

  302. we're here today

  303. in the book of Edom,

  304. ready to hear

  305. the courtroom decree

  306. of Yahweh

  307. concerning Edom.

  308. Now, let's look

  309. at these verses

  310. together.

  311. What we're going

  312. to read

  313. is that we're seeing

  314. a sentencing.

  315. And again,

  316. the Lord is the judge,

  317. Edom is being judged

  318. and receiving

  319. the sentence.

  320. So I'll start back

  321. at verse 1,

  322. and I'll read

  323. down through 15.

  324. The vision of Obadiah.

  325. Thus says the Lord God

  326. concerning Edom.

  327. We have heard

  328. a report from the Lord

  329. and a messenger

  330. has been sent

  331. among the nations.

  332. Rise up!

  333. Let us rise up

  334. against her

  335. for battle.

  336. Behold,

  337. I will make you

  338. small among the nations.

  339. You shall be

  340. utterly despised.

  341. The pride of your heart

  342. has deceived you,

  343. you who live

  344. in the clefts

  345. of the rock

  346. and your lofty dwelling,

  347. who say in your heart,

  348. who can bring me

  349. down to the ground.

  350. Though you soar

  351. aloft like the eagle,

  352. though your nest

  353. is set

  354. among the stars,

  355. from there

  356. I will bring you down,

  357. declares the Lord.

  358. If thieves came to you,

  359. if plunderers by night,

  360. how you've been destroyed.

  361. Would they not steal

  362. only enough for themselves?

  363. If grape gatherers

  364. came to you,

  365. would they not leave

  366. gleanings?

  367. How Esau has been pillaged,

  368. his treasures sought out.

  369. All your allies

  370. have driven you

  371. to your border.

  372. Those at peace with you

  373. have deceived you.

  374. They have prevailed

  375. against you.

  376. Those who eat your bread

  377. have set a trap

  378. beneath you.

  379. He has no understanding.

  380. Will I not

  381. on that day,

  382. declares the Lord,

  383. destroy the wise men

  384. out of Edom

  385. and understanding

  386. out of Mount Esau,

  387. and your mighty men

  388. shall be dismayed,

  389. O Taman,

  390. so that every man

  391. from Mount Esau

  392. will be cut off

  393. by slaughter.

  394. Because of the violence

  395. done to your brother Jacob,

  396. shame shall cover you,

  397. and you shall be

  398. cut off forever

  399. on the day

  400. that you stood aloof,

  401. on the day

  402. that strangers

  403. carried off his wealth

  404. and foreigners

  405. entered his gates

  406. and cast lots

  407. for Jerusalem.

  408. You were like

  409. one of them.

  410. But do not gloat

  411. over the day

  412. of your brother

  413. in the day

  414. of his misfortune.

  415. Do not rejoice

  416. over the people

  417. of Judah

  418. in the day

  419. of their ruin.

  420. Do not boast

  421. in the day

  422. of distress.

  423. Do not enter

  424. the gate

  425. of my people

  426. in the day

  427. of their calamity.

  428. Do not gloat

  429. over his disaster

  430. in the day

  431. of his calamity.

  432. Do not loot

  433. his wealth

  434. in the day

  435. of his calamity.

  436. Do not stand

  437. at the crossroads

  438. to cut off

  439. his fugitives.

  440. Do not hand over

  441. his survivors

  442. in the day

  443. of distress.

  444. For the day

  445. of the Lord

  446. is near

  447. upon all

  448. the nations.

  449. As you have done

  450. it shall be done

  451. to you.

  452. Your deeds

  453. shall return

  454. on your own

  455. head.

  456. So two parts

  457. in this

  458. scary

  459. word of God.

  460. First part

  461. is the judgment

  462. that we see

  463. in verses

  464. two to nine.

  465. Essentially

  466. these verses

  467. tell us

  468. that Edom's

  469. judgment

  470. is both

  471. certain

  472. and near

  473. at hand.

  474. In verse

  475. two we see

  476. that the Lord

  477. cuts right

  478. to the chase.

  479. He brings

  480. immediate

  481. and swift

  482. statement

  483. behold.

  484. It's like

  485. saying see

  486. look this is

  487. really urgent

  488. what I'm about

  489. to say.

  490. I will make

  491. you small

  492. among the

  493. nations.

  494. You should

  495. be utterly

  496. despised.

  497. This

  498. small among

  499. the nations

  500. is insignificant.

  501. He's just

  502. going to weaken

  503. them to the

  504. point that

  505. everybody looks

  506. on and goes

  507. whatever.

  508. It's scary

  509. and in

  510. fact it's

  511. already

  512. happening

  513. because if

  514. you remember

  515. from the

  516. end of

  517. verse one

  518. there's this

  519. messenger of

  520. God who

  521. goes out

  522. among the

  523. nations and

  524. says hey

  525. rise up

  526. guys.

  527. Time for

  528. action.

  529. And they

  530. all agree

  531. collectively

  532. agree let's

  533. go get

  534. Edom.

  535. God's

  536. already at

  537. work judging

  538. this people

  539. even before

  540. the final

  541. judgment

  542. comes.

  543. There's an

  544. immediate sense

  545. as to why

  546. God would

  547. be so

  548. upset when

  549. we look at

  550. verse three.

  551. The pride

  552. of your

  553. heart has

  554. deceived you.

  555. See Edom

  556. was this

  557. very high

  558. well guarded

  559. secure

  560. almost

  561. impenetrable

  562. nation in

  563. the mountains

  564. southeast of

  565. Israel.

  566. And they

  567. knew it.

  568. They were

  569. very well

  570. aware that

  571. nobody could

  572. touch them.

  573. They looked

  574. down on their

  575. neighbors and

  576. even if

  577. somebody wanted

  578. to get from

  579. south to

  580. north or

  581. north to

  582. south they

  583. had to ask

  584. Edom permission

  585. to go

  586. through.

  587. And it was

  588. Edom's choice

  589. whether or not

  590. they would let

  591. people pass.

  592. Just as in

  593. numbers they

  594. said no to

  595. their own

  596. brother.

  597. And this

  598. lofty hearted

  599. thinking of

  600. Edom shows

  601. up strongly

  602. and emphatically

  603. at the question

  604. they ask at the

  605. end of verse

  606. three.

  607. Who is going

  608. to bring

  609. to bring

  610. me down?

  611. Who can

  612. do that?

  613. We're

  614. awesome.

  615. And notice

  616. what the

  617. Lord says

  618. in verse

  619. four.

  620. You might

  621. very well

  622. be soaring

  623. like an

  624. eagle from

  625. the perspective

  626. of man.

  627. Majestic

  628. and carefree

  629. and just

  630. dominant over

  631. the landscape.

  632. Even if you

  633. were there,

  634. even if your

  635. nest was among

  636. the stars,

  637. from there

  638. I will

  639. bring you

  640. down,

  641. declares

  642. the Lord.

  643. Who can

  644. bring me

  645. down?

  646. The knower

  647. of hearts

  648. who knows

  649. this arrogant

  650. Edom

  651. says,

  652. I will.

  653. Your time

  654. is up.

  655. I will.

  656. And when we

  657. see this little

  658. tag ending,

  659. declares the

  660. Lord,

  661. Lord,

  662. we should

  663. think similarly

  664. to the way

  665. Jesus introduces

  666. statements

  667. sometimes like,

  668. truly,

  669. truly I say

  670. to you,

  671. it's kind

  672. of the same

  673. thing,

  674. this weightiness,

  675. this emphasis

  676. that the one

  677. speaking has

  678. this special

  679. kind of

  680. authority and

  681. we should

  682. really pay

  683. attention to

  684. what he's

  685. saying.

  686. Edom,

  687. God has

  688. seen your

  689. pride and

  690. he's going

  691. to bring

  692. you down.

  693. Bank on

  694. it.

  695. As we

  696. move into

  697. verses 5

  698. to 7,

  699. God kind

  700. of leaves

  701. the scene

  702. sort of

  703. and we

  704. start seeing

  705. how the

  706. human agents

  707. are going

  708. to carry

  709. out this

  710. judgment

  711. upon

  712. Edom.

  713. It starts

  714. in verse

  715. 5 with

  716. this really

  717. sort of

  718. gruesome

  719. word picture

  720. of thieves

  721. coming by

  722. night and

  723. plunderers

  724. and the

  725. question,

  726. would they

  727. not only

  728. steal what

  729. they can

  730. carry off?

  731. If thieves

  732. come, they

  733. have to be

  734. strategic,

  735. right?

  736. They got to

  737. go after the

  738. valuable things.

  739. And grape

  740. gatherers,

  741. the end of

  742. five, if

  743. they came,

  744. would they

  745. not leave

  746. gleanings?

  747. We just

  748. saw on

  749. Ruth,

  750. right, how

  751. gleanings

  752. were left

  753. for the

  754. poor and

  755. the helpless

  756. and the

  757. vulnerable.

  758. And in

  759. verse 6,

  760. God says

  761. how Esau

  762. has been

  763. pillaged.

  764. You will

  765. not have a

  766. grape on

  767. the ground.

  768. You will

  769. not have

  770. anything in

  771. your cupboards.

  772. My judgment

  773. is total

  774. against you.

  775. Verse 7

  776. shows how

  777. it's their

  778. own allies,

  779. their friends,

  780. those that

  781. they've broken

  782. bread together

  783. with at

  784. table for

  785. dinner,

  786. totally at

  787. ease because

  788. you know

  789. there's peace

  790. between you.

  791. It's their

  792. allies that

  793. God will

  794. turn against

  795. them to

  796. bring judgment

  797. upon their

  798. heads.

  799. God

  800. is

  801. clueless.

  802. In the

  803. end of

  804. verse 7,

  805. we see

  806. Edom has

  807. no idea

  808. what's

  809. coming.

  810. He's

  811. clueless.

  812. It's like

  813. when the

  814. Bible says

  815. that the

  816. day of

  817. the Lord

  818. comes like

  819. a thief

  820. in the

  821. night.

  822. Edom is

  823. unprepared,

  824. unexpecting.

  825. It's

  826. tragic.

  827. It's

  828. terrible.

  829. And we

  830. see as

  831. much back

  832. in verse

  833. 5.

  834. I skipped

  835. over this

  836. little phrase,

  837. how you

  838. have been

  839. destroyed.

  840. The prophet

  841. inserts this

  842. not to

  843. gloat,

  844. not to

  845. say yay

  846. and cheer,

  847. but a

  848. shock

  849. over the

  850. total

  851. devastation

  852. that Edom

  853. faces.

  854. Same thing

  855. in verse 6,

  856. how Esau

  857. has been

  858. pillaged.

  859. He's on the

  860. verge of

  861. tears over

  862. this reality.

  863. It's horrible.

  864. And even

  865. though Edom

  866. deserves

  867. judgment,

  868. it's not

  869. pretty.

  870. It's not

  871. something to

  872. rejoice

  873. over.

  874. That's

  875. important

  876. because we'll

  877. see Edom

  878. do the

  879. opposite

  880. in a bit.

  881. God

  882. cared about

  883. Edom.

  884. He cared

  885. about the

  886. people that

  887. he said,

  888. time's up,

  889. judgment's

  890. coming.

  891. He cared

  892. a lot

  893. about

  894. Edom.

  895. In fact,

  896. in a

  897. different

  898. narrative

  899. of the

  900. Israelite

  901. wandering

  902. in the

  903. wilderness

  904. when Edom

  905. said no,

  906. in Deuteronomy

  907. 2,

  908. we see a

  909. little bit

  910. more information.

  911. God tells

  912. them,

  913. you're about

  914. to go into

  915. the land

  916. of your

  917. brother.

  918. You're not

  919. to take

  920. advantage of

  921. them.

  922. You're not

  923. to look at

  924. their land

  925. and start

  926. going,

  927. oh,

  928. that's kind

  929. of nice.

  930. I want

  931. that.

  932. I've given

  933. it to them

  934. as a

  935. possession.

  936. God cares

  937. about Edom

  938. very much.

  939. He is not

  940. here just

  941. looking to

  942. kind of

  943. pummel

  944. another group

  945. of people

  946. for wrongdoing.

  947. That's not

  948. our God.

  949. God.

  950. He's a

  951. God of

  952. mercy and

  953. patience,

  954. a God

  955. slow to

  956. anger and

  957. abounding in

  958. steadfast love

  959. and faithfulness.

  960. Yet a

  961. God who

  962. does not

  963. leave the

  964. guilty go

  965. unpunished.

  966. And time

  967. was up.

  968. Edom had

  969. had their

  970. chances and

  971. they had

  972. failed to

  973. repent.

  974. Verses

  975. 8 and

  976. 9,

  977. we see

  978. that the

  979. Lord God

  980. kind of

  981. comes back

  982. onto the

  983. scene and

  984. asks this

  985. question,

  986. will I not

  987. on that

  988. day,

  989. declares

  990. the Lord.

  991. There's that

  992. certainty

  993. again.

  994. Will I not

  995. destroy the

  996. wise men

  997. in understanding,

  998. terrifying the

  999. armies and

  1000. making sure

  1001. that no

  1002. person escapes

  1003. from the

  1004. slaughter.

  1005. God will

  1006. destroy the

  1007. wisdom,

  1008. all of the

  1009. wise,

  1010. will send

  1011. the army

  1012. into complete

  1013. terror,

  1014. and the

  1015. end will be

  1016. the destruction

  1017. of this

  1018. people.

  1019. By 312

  1020. BC,

  1021. this came

  1022. true.

  1023. The

  1024. Nabataeans

  1025. came in

  1026. and Edom

  1027. was no

  1028. more.

  1029. Well,

  1030. maybe you're

  1031. thinking,

  1032. this sounds

  1033. pretty harsh.

  1034. Every person

  1035. cut off by

  1036. slaughter?

  1037. Not to

  1038. mention that

  1039. the God

  1040. who is saying

  1041. this message

  1042. has just

  1043. turned his

  1044. judgment upon

  1045. his own

  1046. people,

  1047. plundered

  1048. and devastated

  1049. their land

  1050. and his

  1051. own

  1052. temple,

  1053. his own

  1054. house.

  1055. And we

  1056. could go

  1057. on and

  1058. on in the

  1059. history of

  1060. the Bible

  1061. and find

  1062. examples of

  1063. this same

  1064. type of

  1065. thing.

  1066. Both

  1067. individuals

  1068. and whole

  1069. nations

  1070. brought under

  1071. the judgment

  1072. of God

  1073. and not

  1074. spared.

  1075. Can we

  1076. just admit

  1077. it seems

  1078. harsh?

  1079. Maybe a

  1080. bit hasty?

  1081. Is God

  1082. just being

  1083. extreme

  1084. here?

  1085. Let's move

  1086. into the

  1087. second part

  1088. of our

  1089. text and

  1090. we'll come

  1091. back to

  1092. that.

  1093. So just

  1094. keep that

  1095. question there

  1096. though.

  1097. Moving on

  1098. into verse

  1099. 10 through

  1100. 15, we

  1101. see that now

  1102. God is going

  1103. to announce

  1104. the formal

  1105. charges

  1106. against

  1107. Edom,

  1108. Esau.

  1109. Because of

  1110. the violence

  1111. done to

  1112. your brother

  1113. Jacob,

  1114. shame shall

  1115. cover you

  1116. and you

  1117. shall be

  1118. cut off

  1119. forever.

  1120. There's that

  1121. cut off

  1122. language again

  1123. we just saw

  1124. in verse

  1125. 9.

  1126. Now this

  1127. violence

  1128. against

  1129. Jacob,

  1130. kind of

  1131. this general

  1132. summary,

  1133. okay God

  1134. violence,

  1135. get it,

  1136. murder maybe,

  1137. but where's

  1138. the details?

  1139. We need

  1140. more evidence

  1141. here for

  1142. this charge

  1143. and God

  1144. will provide

  1145. that.

  1146. But notice

  1147. in verse

  1148. 10,

  1149. the violence

  1150. done to

  1151. your

  1152. brother

  1153. Jacob.

  1154. That's

  1155. important.

  1156. It's really,

  1157. really important.

  1158. See that's

  1159. why throughout

  1160. this whole

  1161. prophetic

  1162. oracle,

  1163. Obadiah has

  1164. kind of been

  1165. interchanging

  1166. Edom and

  1167. Esau,

  1168. Edom and

  1169. Esau,

  1170. because what

  1171. he's really

  1172. concerned with

  1173. is the

  1174. magnitude

  1175. of the

  1176. crimes.

  1177. These weren't

  1178. people who

  1179. didn't know

  1180. each other

  1181. and just

  1182. kind of

  1183. got in

  1184. some little

  1185. fight.

  1186. These are

  1187. brothers.

  1188. Brothers.

  1189. It's horrible.

  1190. In verse

  1191. 11, we see

  1192. that strangers

  1193. came in,

  1194. foreigners

  1195. came in

  1196. and carried

  1197. out the

  1198. wealth

  1199. and the

  1200. nobility

  1201. of Israel.

  1202. And then

  1203. at the end

  1204. of that

  1205. verse, we

  1206. see God

  1207. say to

  1208. Edom,

  1209. you were

  1210. just like

  1211. one of

  1212. them.

  1213. You

  1214. treated

  1215. your own

  1216. brother as

  1217. if he

  1218. was a

  1219. complete

  1220. stranger.

  1221. It's one

  1222. thing to

  1223. conquer

  1224. strangers,

  1225. but another

  1226. thing entirely

  1227. to come

  1228. after your

  1229. own kin.

  1230. Verse 11,

  1231. if you

  1232. look, you

  1233. see this,

  1234. on that

  1235. day when

  1236. you stood

  1237. aloof,

  1238. there's

  1239. reason to

  1240. think that

  1241. what Edom

  1242. is actually

  1243. doing here

  1244. is kind of

  1245. looking upon

  1246. the destruction

  1247. to be

  1248. entertained

  1249. by it.

  1250. It's like

  1251. they've got

  1252. their favorite

  1253. lounge pants,

  1254. they've popped

  1255. the popcorn,

  1256. the butter's

  1257. on it,

  1258. and the salt

  1259. is just

  1260. coating the

  1261. butter,

  1262. and it's

  1263. just so

  1264. delicious,

  1265. and then

  1266. they're just,

  1267. this is

  1268. amazing.

  1269. I'm loving

  1270. what I'm

  1271. seeing here.

  1272. Woohoo!

  1273. They're

  1274. amused

  1275. by their

  1276. brother's

  1277. destruction.

  1278. Do you

  1279. notice the

  1280. on the

  1281. day,

  1282. twice in

  1283. verse 11?

  1284. See at

  1285. first,

  1286. back in

  1287. verse 8,

  1288. when the

  1289. Lord says,

  1290. will I

  1291. not on

  1292. that day

  1293. destroy the

  1294. wise men?

  1295. And now,

  1296. verse 11,

  1297. on the day

  1298. that you

  1299. stood aloof.

  1300. Verse 15,

  1301. it changes

  1302. from that

  1303. day to

  1304. the day

  1305. of the

  1306. Lord.

  1307. Obadiah

  1308. uses this

  1309. concept of

  1310. day to

  1311. connect this

  1312. whole oracle

  1313. together.

  1314. There's three

  1315. distinct days

  1316. that he's

  1317. talking about.

  1318. The first

  1319. day in

  1320. verse 8

  1321. is the

  1322. day of

  1323. Edom,

  1324. the near

  1325. future day

  1326. when God

  1327. will completely

  1328. judge the

  1329. people of

  1330. Edom.

  1331. then in

  1332. verses 11

  1333. to 14,

  1334. the day

  1335. he's talking

  1336. about is

  1337. the day

  1338. that Israel

  1339. had just

  1340. experienced

  1341. when Babylon

  1342. came in

  1343. and destroyed

  1344. their land,

  1345. exiled their

  1346. people.

  1347. And then

  1348. verse 15,

  1349. the day

  1350. of the

  1351. Lord is

  1352. the uncertain

  1353. future day

  1354. when the

  1355. Son of

  1356. Man,

  1357. Jesus Christ,

  1358. comes in

  1359. the clouds

  1360. with his

  1361. angels and

  1362. judges the

  1363. nations once

  1364. and for

  1365. all.

  1366. Those are

  1367. the three

  1368. days that

  1369. Obadiah is

  1370. talking about,

  1371. all having

  1372. to do with

  1373. sin purging

  1374. judgment.

  1375. This day

  1376. reference now

  1377. that we see

  1378. in verse 11

  1379. continues into

  1380. verses 12

  1381. to 14 and

  1382. it just is

  1383. like this

  1384. hammer on

  1385. an anvil,

  1386. just over

  1387. and over

  1388. and over.

  1389. It's used

  1390. in a series

  1391. of eight

  1392. commands

  1393. directed at

  1394. Edom.

  1395. The ESV

  1396. translates them

  1397. do not,

  1398. do not,

  1399. do not.

  1400. Maybe if

  1401. you're in

  1402. KJV

  1403. or other

  1404. translations

  1405. you might

  1406. see,

  1407. you should

  1408. not have

  1409. or you

  1410. shouldn't

  1411. not have.

  1412. What's

  1413. going on?

  1414. That's like

  1415. one sounds

  1416. future,

  1417. one sounds

  1418. past.

  1419. Here's what

  1420. I think

  1421. Obadiah is

  1422. doing.

  1423. He's using

  1424. these commands

  1425. to continue

  1426. expressing

  1427. sort of

  1428. the formal

  1429. charges

  1430. against

  1431. Edom.

  1432. So the

  1433. do nots,

  1434. do nots,

  1435. do nots are

  1436. still what

  1437. Edom has

  1438. already done.

  1439. And

  1440. writing them

  1441. in the way

  1442. that he

  1443. has

  1444. emphasizes

  1445. the depth

  1446. of the

  1447. criminal

  1448. activity.

  1449. These

  1450. things are

  1451. no-brainers.

  1452. They knew

  1453. better.

  1454. This is like

  1455. God saying

  1456. do not,

  1457. do not,

  1458. do not,

  1459. saying shame

  1460. on you.

  1461. You knew

  1462. that that was

  1463. wrong the

  1464. whole time

  1465. you did it.

  1466. You didn't

  1467. care.

  1468. In fact,

  1469. you took

  1470. great joy.

  1471. notice if

  1472. you look

  1473. closely through

  1474. the list of

  1475. those eight

  1476. charges in

  1477. verses 12

  1478. to 14,

  1479. they start

  1480. in the

  1481. heart and

  1482. they just

  1483. keep expanding

  1484. and expanding

  1485. and expanding

  1486. until finally

  1487. Edom has

  1488. turned into

  1489. bounty hunters,

  1490. turning their

  1491. own brothers

  1492. over to

  1493. captors

  1494. because of

  1495. a heart of

  1496. pride.

  1497. It's scary

  1498. how far

  1499. pride will

  1500. go.

  1501. in the

  1502. lives of

  1503. the nations

  1504. in our

  1505. own lives.

  1506. Notice

  1507. in verse

  1508. 13 that

  1509. after God

  1510. saying your

  1511. brother and

  1512. his misfortune

  1513. and then 13

  1514. he says do

  1515. not enter the

  1516. gate of my

  1517. people.

  1518. Now God

  1519. is personally

  1520. offended

  1521. because

  1522. Edom has

  1523. now done

  1524. harm to

  1525. his chosen

  1526. the ones

  1527. he particularly

  1528. loves in

  1529. all the

  1530. earth.

  1531. These are

  1532. horrible crimes

  1533. against

  1534. God's

  1535. people.

  1536. Edom's

  1537. own

  1538. brother.

  1539. Just to

  1540. point out

  1541. this nerdy

  1542. thing that I

  1543. found this

  1544. week from

  1545. verse 13.

  1546. If you look

  1547. and you see

  1548. this word

  1549. repeated three

  1550. times calamity

  1551. in the day

  1552. of their

  1553. calamity

  1554. in the day

  1555. of his

  1556. calamity

  1557. in the day

  1558. of his

  1559. calamity

  1560. maybe in

  1561. a different

  1562. Bible it

  1563. might say

  1564. distress or

  1565. destruction.

  1566. In Hebrew

  1567. this word

  1568. sounds a lot

  1569. like

  1570. Edom.

  1571. So if we

  1572. reword

  1573. verse 13

  1574. listen to

  1575. it.

  1576. Do not

  1577. enter the

  1578. gate of

  1579. my people

  1580. in the

  1581. day of

  1582. their

  1583. Edom.

  1584. Do not

  1585. gloat over

  1586. his disaster

  1587. in the day

  1588. of his

  1589. Edo.

  1590. Do not

  1591. loot his

  1592. wealth in

  1593. the day

  1594. of his

  1595. Edo.

  1596. It's like

  1597. this

  1598. tolling

  1599. bell

  1600. clanging

  1601. away

  1602. promising

  1603. Edom

  1604. full

  1605. total

  1606. retribution

  1607. for the

  1608. wrongs

  1609. he committed.

  1610. it's just

  1611. one of the

  1612. ways that

  1613. Hebrew

  1614. poetry is

  1615. just

  1616. beautiful

  1617. at

  1618. conveying

  1619. the

  1620. meaning

  1621. God

  1622. wants

  1623. us

  1624. to

  1625. know.

  1626. And now

  1627. we arrive

  1628. at verse

  1629. 15.

  1630. And we

  1631. see this

  1632. for the

  1633. day of

  1634. the Lord

  1635. is near

  1636. upon all

  1637. the

  1638. nations

  1639. and we

  1640. see

  1641. why

  1642. this

  1643. is in

  1644. our

  1645. Bible.

  1646. It's not

  1647. so we

  1648. would kind

  1649. of look

  1650. back at

  1651. Edom

  1652. and just

  1653. go

  1654. poor

  1655. fellows

  1656. they met

  1657. their end

  1658. because

  1659. God's

  1660. holy.

  1661. We see

  1662. that

  1663. Edom's

  1664. judgment

  1665. is just

  1666. one of

  1667. a multitude

  1668. of signposts

  1669. that warns

  1670. every person

  1671. everywhere

  1672. today and

  1673. every day

  1674. judgment

  1675. is coming

  1676. judgment

  1677. is near

  1678. near upon

  1679. all the

  1680. nations.

  1681. Edom

  1682. is an

  1683. example to

  1684. us all

  1685. judgment

  1686. is coming.

  1687. It's a

  1688. severe

  1689. yet

  1690. merciful

  1691. warning

  1692. to

  1693. repent.

  1694. This

  1695. text this

  1696. morning

  1697. claims

  1698. this

  1699. the Lord

  1700. will judge

  1701. all the

  1702. nations

  1703. according

  1704. to his

  1705. righteousness.

  1706. The

  1707. Lord will

  1708. judge

  1709. all

  1710. the

  1711. nations

  1712. according

  1713. to his

  1714. righteousness.

  1715. So what?

  1716. God,

  1717. why in

  1718. this

  1719. warm

  1720. sanctuary

  1721. 2,500

  1722. years

  1723. later

  1724. does that

  1725. matter

  1726. to you

  1727. and me

  1728. in Christ

  1729. the King

  1730. Church?

  1731. Let me

  1732. just give us

  1733. a few

  1734. reasons

  1735. as we

  1736. close.

  1737. it matters

  1738. that the

  1739. Lord will

  1740. judge all

  1741. the nations

  1742. according to

  1743. his

  1744. righteousness

  1745. because I

  1746. think you

  1747. and I

  1748. if we're

  1749. honest we

  1750. have trouble

  1751. with the

  1752. idea of

  1753. judgment.

  1754. It makes

  1755. us a little

  1756. squeamish,

  1757. fearful that

  1758. we might

  1759. offend

  1760. people who

  1761. God loves.

  1762. When we

  1763. start talking

  1764. about wrath

  1765. and hell

  1766. and judgment

  1767. we seem

  1768. like we're

  1769. afraid we

  1770. might come

  1771. across as

  1772. holier than

  1773. thou.

  1774. Big headed,

  1775. proud,

  1776. self-righteous,

  1777. legalistic,

  1778. bigoted,

  1779. hate mongers.

  1780. We have

  1781. trouble with

  1782. the idea

  1783. of judgment.

  1784. It's not

  1785. what we

  1786. want to

  1787. hear.

  1788. God is

  1789. love,

  1790. right?

  1791. Let's just

  1792. talk about

  1793. his love

  1794. day after

  1795. day after

  1796. day.

  1797. It's so

  1798. beautiful.

  1799. And of

  1800. course God

  1801. is love.

  1802. We never

  1803. forget that

  1804. he's love

  1805. and we

  1806. never cease

  1807. to tell

  1808. people that

  1809. he is

  1810. love.

  1811. There's

  1812. another

  1813. reason why

  1814. this matters

  1815. that the

  1816. Lord will

  1817. judge all

  1818. nations

  1819. according to

  1820. his righteousness

  1821. and it's

  1822. because judgment

  1823. reveals an

  1824. essential

  1825. character of

  1826. our God,

  1827. the God

  1828. that we

  1829. want the

  1830. nations to

  1831. know.

  1832. Our Lord

  1833. wants us

  1834. and all the

  1835. world to

  1836. know that

  1837. he is

  1838. righteous

  1839. and holy

  1840. and not

  1841. just to have

  1842. that thought

  1843. kind of

  1844. hanging in

  1845. our systematic

  1846. theology

  1847. brains like

  1848. Wayne

  1849. Grudem's

  1850. book on

  1851. a shelf.

  1852. That's not

  1853. why God

  1854. wants us

  1855. to know

  1856. that he

  1857. is righteous.

  1858. He wants

  1859. that reality

  1860. to operate

  1861. in our

  1862. lives,

  1863. to function

  1864. in our

  1865. minds and

  1866. in our

  1867. hearts and

  1868. the way

  1869. we live

  1870. our lives

  1871. before the

  1872. world.

  1873. We know

  1874. a righteous

  1875. God.

  1876. It's

  1877. important

  1878. God's

  1879. God's

  1880. righteous

  1881. good.

  1882. He's going to

  1883. get that guy.

  1884. A third

  1885. reason why

  1886. this matters

  1887. to us

  1888. today.

  1889. It's because

  1890. judgment

  1891. can either

  1892. make us

  1893. squirm

  1894. in discomfort

  1895. or we

  1896. can become

  1897. hard-hearted,

  1898. right?

  1899. We can just

  1900. remove compassion

  1901. from the

  1902. equation,

  1903. well,

  1904. God's going

  1905. to get

  1906. you,

  1907. man.

  1908. Peace

  1909. out.

  1910. And we

  1911. leave.

  1912. And we

  1913. condemn

  1914. people.

  1915. We lack

  1916. compassion

  1917. of our

  1918. Lord Jesus.

  1919. Oh,

  1920. God's

  1921. righteous

  1922. good.

  1923. He's going

  1924. to get

  1925. that guy,

  1926. that creep.

  1927. That's not

  1928. who God

  1929. is and

  1930. that's not

  1931. who his

  1932. people are

  1933. to be

  1934. either.

  1935. We know

  1936. as Christians,

  1937. as God's

  1938. people who

  1939. have his

  1940. word,

  1941. that God

  1942. has determined

  1943. to reveal

  1944. his righteousness

  1945. two ways.

  1946. One,

  1947. through

  1948. judgment

  1949. that will

  1950. be full

  1951. and finally

  1952. meted out

  1953. when Jesus

  1954. comes back.

  1955. That's

  1956. way number

  1957. one.

  1958. Way number

  1959. two is

  1960. by crushing

  1961. his son

  1962. for us.

  1963. God

  1964. there's

  1965. your

  1966. options

  1967. world.

  1968. As

  1969. Obadiah

  1970. writes this,

  1971. he says,

  1972. judgment

  1973. is coming

  1974. upon all

  1975. the nations

  1976. and there

  1977. is no

  1978. one who

  1979. will be

  1980. spared.

  1981. There

  1982. is not

  1983. one who

  1984. will stand

  1985. in the

  1986. judgment.

  1987. None

  1988. is

  1989. righteous,

  1990. no,

  1991. not one.

  1992. No

  1993. one seeks

  1994. God.

  1995. No

  1996. one

  1997. understands.

  1998. God

  1999. and then

  2000. Jesus

  2001. shows up

  2002. and says,

  2003. I give

  2004. my life

  2005. as a

  2006. ransom

  2007. for many.

  2008. That's

  2009. righteous

  2010. of God.

  2011. You know

  2012. that,

  2013. right,

  2014. friends?

  2015. It was

  2016. right and

  2017. just of

  2018. God to

  2019. pour out

  2020. his wrath

  2021. on his

  2022. own son

  2023. so that

  2024. sinners

  2025. like us

  2026. might become

  2027. the righteousness

  2028. of God

  2029. welcomed

  2030. into his

  2031. family

  2032. forever.

  2033. God is

  2034. righteous and

  2035. we celebrate

  2036. that.

  2037. We love

  2038. him for

  2039. that.

  2040. He's

  2041. wonderful

  2042. because

  2043. he's

  2044. righteous.

  2045. And

  2046. it's even

  2047. more difficult,

  2048. right,

  2049. when we

  2050. know that

  2051. the world

  2052. and our

  2053. very neighbors

  2054. and some

  2055. of our

  2056. closest friends

  2057. and family,

  2058. they reject

  2059. the God

  2060. of the Bible

  2061. because he's

  2062. too mean.

  2063. He's cruel

  2064. hearted.

  2065. He's mean

  2066. in the Old

  2067. Testament.

  2068. He's nice

  2069. in the New

  2070. Testament,

  2071. so who

  2072. needs him

  2073. anyway?

  2074. And so

  2075. we shy

  2076. away from

  2077. telling people,

  2078. no,

  2079. he's

  2080. righteous

  2081. and he's

  2082. loving

  2083. and he sent

  2084. Jesus in

  2085. your place.

  2086. We fear

  2087. angering those

  2088. we want to

  2089. save,

  2090. so we

  2091. kind of

  2092. suppress and

  2093. diminish the

  2094. righteousness of

  2095. God and

  2096. kind of

  2097. go after the

  2098. warm and

  2099. fuzzy things

  2100. of him.

  2101. God never

  2102. ceases to be

  2103. righteous.

  2104. Obadiah says

  2105. that the day

  2106. of the Lord

  2107. is coming upon

  2108. all the

  2109. nations when

  2110. God judges

  2111. everybody in

  2112. his righteousness.

  2113. It's so

  2114. clearly

  2115. peppered on

  2116. the pages

  2117. of our

  2118. Bibles.

  2119. He wants

  2120. us to

  2121. love his

  2122. righteousness,

  2123. friends.

  2124. He wants

  2125. us to

  2126. be zealous

  2127. for it,

  2128. be quick

  2129. to speak

  2130. of it

  2131. before others.

  2132. He will

  2133. judge all

  2134. nations

  2135. according to

  2136. his righteousness.

  2137. So

  2138. we ask,

  2139. friends,

  2140. do you

  2141. love

  2142. his

  2143. righteousness?

  2144. Do you

  2145. love it?

  2146. If you

  2147. love it,

  2148. is it

  2149. operating in

  2150. your life?

  2151. Is it

  2152. changing how

  2153. you live?

  2154. Do you

  2155. hate sin

  2156. more?

  2157. Because God

  2158. is righteous

  2159. and God

  2160. himself hates

  2161. sin?

  2162. Are you

  2163. longing for

  2164. the day?

  2165. Are you

  2166. hungering and

  2167. thirsting for

  2168. the righteousness

  2169. that one day

  2170. will be satisfied

  2171. when Jesus

  2172. comes and

  2173. brings us to

  2174. glory?

  2175. Long all

  2176. you want,

  2177. Lord.

  2178. Long all

  2179. you want,

  2180. friends.

  2181. You'll be

  2182. satisfied.

  2183. God is

  2184. righteous and

  2185. he will one

  2186. day reveal

  2187. that to

  2188. all nations.

  2189. We only

  2190. have to look

  2191. at Edom.

  2192. Edom stands

  2193. there.

  2194. Fallen,

  2195. covered in

  2196. shame,

  2197. no more

  2198. people.

  2199. We love

  2200. God's

  2201. righteousness

  2202. and bravely

  2203. and lovingly

  2204. warn everybody.

  2205. The day's

  2206. coming.

  2207. And after

  2208. we get done

  2209. telling them

  2210. of the

  2211. righteousness

  2212. of God,

  2213. we say,

  2214. let me tell

  2215. you about

  2216. this sweet

  2217. guy I know.

  2218. His name's

  2219. Jesus and

  2220. he gives you

  2221. his own

  2222. righteousness

  2223. so that you

  2224. can be spared

  2225. from judgment

  2226. forever.

  2227. over and

  2228. he's for

  2229. all the

  2230. people

  2231. everywhere.

  2232. The one

  2233. who takes

  2234. our guilty

  2235. sentence

  2236. upon

  2237. himself

  2238. and gives

  2239. us his

  2240. own

  2241. righteousness

  2242. forever.

  2243. Perfect

  2244. righteousness.

  2245. The Lord

  2246. will judge

  2247. all the

  2248. nations

  2249. according to

  2250. his

  2251. righteousness

  2252. and thanks

  2253. be to

  2254. God,

  2255. friends,

  2256. we have

  2257. a refuge

  2258. in Jesus

  2259. Christ.

  2260. We would

  2261. not stand

  2262. either.

  2263. We're among

  2264. the proud.

  2265. We're among

  2266. the nations

  2267. who will

  2268. stand at

  2269. the judgment

  2270. and be

  2271. cast out.

  2272. But for

  2273. Christ,

  2274. only

  2275. him,

  2276. flee to

  2277. him.

  2278. He's your

  2279. refuge.

  2280. Day

  2281. after day

  2282. after day

  2283. flee to

  2284. him.

  2285. You have

  2286. no

  2287. righteousness

  2288. of your

  2289. own.

  2290. It's

  2291. filthy

  2292. rags,

  2293. but Jesus

  2294. is your

  2295. righteousness.

  2296. And when

  2297. God comes

  2298. back to

  2299. judge the

  2300. nations,

  2301. you'll be

  2302. safe in

  2303. him.

  2304. Friends,

  2305. we're now

  2306. going to

  2307. gather at

  2308. the Lord's

  2309. table.

  2310. reflect on

  2311. the crushed

  2312. body,

  2313. shed blood

  2314. of our

  2315. Lord Jesus.

  2316. We're going

  2317. to unite

  2318. together and

  2319. marveling at

  2320. what he has

  2321. done for

  2322. unrighteous

  2323. sinners like

  2324. us to

  2325. make us

  2326. righteous.

  2327. And then

  2328. we're going

  2329. to sing as

  2330. we go,

  2331. nothing but

  2332. the blood.

  2333. So let's

  2334. pray together

  2335. as the

  2336. communion

  2337. servers come

  2338. forward today.

  2339. God,

  2340. help us to

  2341. be lovers of

  2342. your

  2343. righteousness.

  2344. thank you

  2345. for this

  2346. warning in

  2347. Obadiah,

  2348. and I

  2349. pray that

  2350. you would

  2351. make us

  2352. messengers

  2353. who go

  2354. out and

  2355. say,

  2356. the day

  2357. is coming,

  2358. Jesus is

  2359. your hope,

  2360. repent now.

  2361. We love

  2362. you,

  2363. give you

  2364. thanks and

  2365. praise in

  2366. Jesus' name.

  2367. Amen.

  2368. Amen.

  2369. Amen.

  2370. Amen.

  2371. Amen.

  2372. Amen.

  2383. Amen.

  2384. Amen.

  2385. Amen.
