  1. We today are finishing our two-part series in the book of Obadiah.

  2. So if you have a Bible, I'd invite you to follow along if you can find it.

  3. It's an Old Testament, it's a sliver of a book, the smallest book of the Old Testament,

  4. in fact, just 21 short verses.

  5. It's toward the very back end, I think it's 918 or so in the Pew Bibles, the big ESVs.

  6. And last week, just to kind of refresh for anybody who may not have been here last week,

  7. we heard this oracle of the Lord against Edom, pronouncing judgment and ruin upon this brother

  8. of the people of Israel who had both cheered, profited, and contributed to Israel's own destruction

  9. of judgment from God.

  10. So it was a heavy week last week and it was warm in here and if you're here today, there's

  11. good news that though it's still hot, this is the upswing of the book of Obadiah and there

  12. is really, really sweet news for us to benefit from together today.

  13. So maybe you've heard some of these types of statements, maybe you've uttered them yourself

  14. in the midst of difficult circumstances, things like, well, think positively or nothing's ever

  15. really as bad as it seems.

  16. Think on the bright side.

  17. Or one of my favorites, everything will work out in the end.

  18. We know that even our best efforts to cheer others up who are in the midst of hard situations

  19. and we know that when people have tried to cheer us up when we've been in the middle of

  20. hard situations, these kind of statements can leave this hollow feeling.

  21. We know like, well, it's the best I can offer and yet it doesn't really satisfy.

  22. People are in misery and suffering and this just seems like something kind of nice to soothe them

  23. for a moment, but it's not lasting.

  24. Imagine the people of Israel who have just been exiled, seen Jerusalem, walls torn down,

  25. their own temple of worship burned to the ground and now they're in exile in a foreign land

  26. with a foreign king being tasked with worshiping foreign gods.

  27. Imagine if we just came up to these Israelites and said, well, just don't worry, be happy.

  28. How unsatisfying that word would be.

  29. And in fact, proves kind of unkind, doesn't it?

  30. Because it ignores the realities of the situations that Israel is going through and that we ourselves

  31. know so well, a situation in which hope seems nowhere to be found.

  32. Where can we find any lasting comfort in the midst of such a perplexing world?

  33. In the midst of suffering and difficulty,

  34. when God seems silent, distant,

  35. or even the cause of our pain and suffering,

  36. where is hope?

  37. Well, we learn from Obadiah that God has an answer to these questions.

  38. And his answer is,

  39. hope is found with me.

  40. So let's read Obadiah,

  41. starting in verse 15 and going to the end.

  42. Don't,

  43. try not to get too caught up in all these place names

  44. and these confusing people and places and locations.

  45. We'll kind of explain the purpose of those things.

  46. But listen for the one speaking and the promises to his people

  47. and just how he's bringing all of this together

  48. in spite of a situation that appears hopeless.

  49. This is God's word to us today, friends.

  50. For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations.

  51. As you have done, it shall be done to you.

  52. Your deeds shall return on your own head.

  53. For as you have drunk on my holy mountains,

  54. so all the nations shall drink continually.

  55. They shall drink and swallow

  56. and shall be as though they had never been.

  57. But in Mount Zion,

  58. there shall be those who escape

  59. and it shall be called holy.

  60. And the house of Jacob

  61. shall possess their own possessions.

  62. The house of Jacob shall be a fire

  63. and the house of Joseph a flame

  64. and the house of Esau stubble.

  65. They shall burn them and consume them

  66. and there shall be no survivor

  67. for the house of Esau.

  68. For the Lord has spoken.

  69. Those of the Negev shall possess Mount Esau

  70. and those of the Shephelah

  71. shall possess the land of the Philistines.

  72. They shall possess the land of Ephraim

  73. and the land of Samaria

  74. and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

  75. The exiles of this host of the people of Israel

  76. shall possess the land of the Canaanites

  77. as far as the Zarephath.

  78. And the exiles of Jerusalem

  79. who are in Sepharad

  80. shall possess the cities of the Negev.

  81. Saviors shall go up to Mount Zion

  82. to rule Mount Esau

  83. and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

  84. Friends, God's message to us today

  85. is very simple.

  86. In fact, we can summarize it

  87. in about five or six words.

  88. Hope in your sovereign king.

  89. Hope in your sovereign king.

  90. We're going to walk through this passage today

  91. looking at three truths about who God is

  92. that confirm and support this call

  93. for us, God's people,

  94. to hope in the Lord.

  95. So three truths.

  96. First truth is this,

  97. that our God is perfectly just.

  98. We see this in verses 15 and 16.

  99. If we remember that Edom's day

  100. serves as this signpost.

  101. The judgment that God said was near

  102. for the people of Edom

  103. is actually this sort of beacon

  104. and warning to all the nations

  105. because in verse 15,

  106. we see that the day of the Lord

  107. is near upon not just Edom,

  108. but all nations.

  109. Beyond a warning,

  110. this statement is also reinforcing hope

  111. for God's people.

  112. Our God is just,

  113. the prophet tells us.

  114. We see in verse 15 that

  115. as you have done,

  116. it shall be done to you.

  117. This eye for an eye

  118. retribution principle

  119. that governs the universe.

  120. not because karma

  121. is this thing that exists

  122. and what goes around

  123. comes around,

  124. but because the God

  125. of this universe

  126. is a just God.

  127. He will render judgment

  128. upon all people

  129. for what we have done.

  130. This is such good news

  131. to a bunch of exiles

  132. who are carted off from Israel,

  133. who would experience

  134. God's righteous anger

  135. at their own sin

  136. and rebellion and idolatry,

  137. and then,

  138. on top of that,

  139. been humiliated

  140. by their brother Edom

  141. from their high place

  142. mocking and laughing

  143. and looting the cities

  144. of rubble.

  145. And God sees it all.

  146. And it's promised

  147. that the guilty

  148. will not go unpunished.

  149. In verse 16,

  150. we see that there's

  151. this interesting shift

  152. that happens here.

  153. So far,

  154. every time the word you

  155. has been used,

  156. Obadiah has been speaking

  157. directly to Edom,

  158. the you is singular,

  159. and he's been talking,

  160. you, Edom,

  161. this is going to happen.

  162. You've done this.

  163. I'm going to do this to you,

  164. et cetera.

  165. But here in verse 16,

  166. the you becomes you all,

  167. all of you.

  168. And I think Obadiah

  169. peels back the curtain

  170. a little bit,

  171. and he's speaking now

  172. to the exiled people

  173. of God

  174. who are in a situation

  175. that is completely hopeless.

  176. And he says,

  177. just as you've drunk

  178. on my holy mountain,

  179. so all the nations

  180. will surely drink.

  181. So he speaks this message.

  182. You know my judgment,

  183. and you know how harsh

  184. and extreme it can be,

  185. and yet there is hope

  186. because I'm not done

  187. with you,

  188. and I'm not done

  189. with the nations

  190. who have become

  191. your enemies

  192. and harmed you.

  193. God says,

  194. surely I will bring judgment

  195. upon the nations.

  196. None of your enemies,

  197. including Edom,

  198. will miss out

  199. on this cup of retribution.

  200. See what he's doing?

  201. Israel still had hope

  202. because the Lord

  203. was still in charge

  204. of the situation.

  205. Justice was still

  206. his to bring.

  207. It's still good news

  208. for us today.

  209. God is just today

  210. and always forever.

  211. Now, of course,

  212. we know this, right?

  213. We know that God is just.

  214. We say this to ourselves

  215. and to each other.

  216. But if we're honest too,

  217. right,

  218. we can tend to live

  219. sort of untethered

  220. from this reality,

  221. sort of in our heads

  222. going,

  223. yes, God is just,

  224. but then with our lives

  225. we can say,

  226. maybe he's not.

  227. Maybe I need to

  228. kind of take action

  229. into my own hands.

  230. So to help us,

  231. let's run a little diagnostic

  232. and show that

  233. while we might be prone

  234. to retaliate

  235. and demand immediate

  236. response of payment

  237. for wrongs done,

  238. while we may hold grudges,

  239. we might try

  240. and self-justify,

  241. kind of minimizing

  242. our own sin

  243. and over-inflating

  244. other sin.

  245. Let's run this diagnostic

  246. asking the question,

  247. am I living in the good

  248. of the truth

  249. that God is just?

  250. Am I living in the goodness

  251. of the truth

  252. that God is just?

  253. Just three principles

  254. to keep in mind,

  255. to live in the good

  256. of this reality

  257. this morning

  258. and always.

  259. first,

  260. we're to value

  261. all people the same

  262. because they're

  263. God's image bearers.

  264. We're prone

  265. to favoritism,

  266. which is unjust.

  267. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  268. tells us of this example

  269. where two guys

  270. come into a house

  271. of worship

  272. and one guy

  273. has gold rings

  274. and he's got

  275. really fine clothing

  276. and has the latest

  277. Calvin Klein cologne on

  278. and he walks in

  279. and another guy

  280. comes in

  281. with tattered clothing

  282. and barely any shoes

  283. on his feet

  284. and maybe he smells bad

  285. because he hasn't

  286. had a chance

  287. to shower recently.

  288. And James points out

  289. how the people

  290. treated one man

  291. as royalty

  292. and brought him

  293. to a seat of honor

  294. and the other man

  295. said,

  296. well,

  297. can you get down here

  298. on the floor

  299. and I'd actually like

  300. to put my feet

  301. on top of you

  302. for my own comfort.

  303. James says,

  304. we're not to show

  305. that kind of partiality.

  306. We're not to be

  307. unjust like that

  308. because our God

  309. is a God of justice

  310. who values all human life

  311. the same.

  312. So likewise,

  313. we look to affirm

  314. and uphold the dignity

  315. and worth of all people.

  316. Second,

  317. diagnostic,

  318. see if we're living

  319. in the goodness

  320. of the truth

  321. that God is just.

  322. So we love our enemies.

  323. We pray for those

  324. who persecute us.

  325. We don't go around

  326. retaliating

  327. and sort of

  328. enacting our own retribution

  329. for wrongs committed

  330. against us.

  331. We love

  332. and we bless

  333. and we pray

  334. for those

  335. who persecute us.

  336. First Peter

  337. unpacks this so well

  338. for us

  339. in chapter 3,

  340. verse 9,

  341. he writes,

  342. do not repay evil

  343. for evil

  344. or reviling

  345. for reviling.

  346. but on the contrary,

  347. bless

  348. for to this

  349. you were called.

  350. In his reasoning,

  351. he goes on

  352. to kind of lay out

  353. is that

  354. both those

  355. who initiate

  356. the reviling,

  357. who begin

  358. the injustice

  359. and those who

  360. retaliate

  361. against that injustice,

  362. that's evil

  363. on both sides.

  364. So whether you're

  365. perpetrating it

  366. or you're being

  367. the victim initially

  368. and then lashing out

  369. in response,

  370. it's evil.

  371. He says,

  372. so don't do that,

  373. bless.

  374. Your holy nation,

  375. bless,

  376. always,

  377. regardless.

  378. And he says,

  379. ultimately,

  380. because God is just

  381. and God will bring

  382. judgment upon evil.

  383. Instead,

  384. be like Jesus

  385. who in chapter 2

  386. of 1 Peter,

  387. Peter says,

  388. when he was reviled,

  389. he did not revile

  390. in return.

  391. He didn't retaliate.

  392. He continued

  393. entrusting himself

  394. to the one

  395. who judges justly.

  396. So we love

  397. our enemies,

  398. living in the good

  399. of God

  400. being so just.

  401. And 3,

  402. we are quick

  403. to forgive

  404. those who sin

  405. against us.

  406. we know

  407. that as recipients

  408. of the grace

  409. of God

  410. and the forgiveness

  411. that only God

  412. can provide,

  413. that no person

  414. could ever

  415. wrong us

  416. anywhere near

  417. the degree

  418. that we have

  419. wronged

  420. and offended

  421. our God.

  422. So we long

  423. for even the worst

  424. of our enemies

  425. to experience

  426. the grace

  427. and forgiveness

  428. of a loving

  429. father.

  430. we forgive

  431. so that we can

  432. shine his light

  433. and to show

  434. how grateful

  435. we are

  436. for the mercy

  437. that God

  438. has extended

  439. to us.

  440. From Jesus'

  441. lips himself,

  442. we realize

  443. that it is

  444. unjust

  445. to have received

  446. the grace

  447. of God

  448. for ourselves

  449. and then

  450. to demand

  451. justice

  452. from our brothers

  453. when they

  454. wrong us.

  455. Give what

  456. has been given.

  457. We've been given

  458. mercy so we

  459. give mercy

  460. freely

  461. without reservation.

  462. That's to live

  463. in the goodness

  464. of the reality

  465. that God

  466. is just.

  467. God will repay

  468. all people

  469. for what they

  470. have done.

  471. So God,

  472. let God,

  473. church,

  474. let God bring

  475. justice.

  476. He is just

  477. and he's faithful.

  478. Our reason

  479. to hope

  480. in our sovereign

  481. king this morning

  482. just keeps getting

  483. more clear now

  484. as we move back

  485. into the text

  486. and we start

  487. looking again

  488. at this second

  489. reason

  490. to hope

  491. in your sovereign

  492. king this morning.

  493. It's because

  494. God keeps

  495. his promises.

  496. God keeps

  497. his promises.

  498. We've already

  499. seen this promise

  500. that the day

  501. of Edom

  502. was near

  503. and that all

  504. the nations

  505. will be judged

  506. according to

  507. their deeds

  508. but now

  509. in verse 17

  510. it turns

  511. and we see

  512. this word

  513. but

  514. in Mount Zion

  515. there shall be

  516. those who escape.

  517. we have a God

  518. who has told us

  519. in 2 Timothy

  520. 2.13

  521. that even

  522. if we are

  523. faithless

  524. he remains

  525. faithful

  526. for he cannot

  527. deny

  528. himself.

  529. It's a God

  530. who in

  531. Proverbs 30

    Proverbs 30:5

  532. verse 5

  533. reveals that

  534. every word

  535. of God

  536. proves true.

  537. He is a shield

  538. to everyone

  539. who takes

  540. refuge in him.

  541. We know

  542. and worship

  543. and love

  544. a God

  545. who keeps

  546. his promises.

  547. So when we see

  548. promise

  549. after promise

  550. after promise

  551. in Obadiah

  552. our hearts

  553. should be filled

  554. with hope.

  555. Verse 17

  556. the phrase

  557. translated

  558. those who escape

  559. should really

  560. be seen

  561. as deliverance.

  562. It's not talking

  563. about group of people

  564. it's talking

  565. about delivering

  566. but in Mount Zion

  567. there shall be

  568. deliverance

  569. and the mountain

  570. shall be holy.

  571. There's the first

  572. promise here

  573. we see that

  574. deliverance is coming

  575. in the very place

  576. that God established

  577. for his people

  578. to dwell

  579. with him

  580. forever.

  581. It's in rubble

  582. and yet he still

  583. makes this promise

  584. and we hear

  585. the whisper

  586. of covenant.

  587. covenant.

  588. We move on

  589. and we see

  590. at the end

  591. of verse 17

  592. that the house

  593. of Jacob

  594. shall possess

  595. their own

  596. possessions.

  597. It's talking

  598. promised land

  599. the land

  600. promised to

  601. the patriarchs

  602. Abraham,

  603. Isaac and

  604. Jacob

  605. the land

  606. of Canaan

  607. in this case

  608. God promises

  609. that they're

  610. going to retake

  611. what was lost

  612. to them

  613. after the

  614. backside

  615. of this

  616. judgment

  617. that they

  618. received.

  619. And we hear

  620. the sound

  621. of covenant

  622. again.

  623. Verse 18

  624. there's this

  625. promise of

  626. triumph and

  627. victory over

  628. all of the

  629. enemies of

  630. God and

  631. his people.

  632. The house

  633. of Jacob

  634. shall be a

  635. fire,

  636. the house

  637. of Joseph

  638. a flame,

  639. Esau

  640. will be

  641. stubble.

  642. It'll be

  643. the chaff

  644. that only

  645. serves to

  646. expand the

  647. flame.

  648. God's

  649. people will

  650. be the

  651. fire,

  652. and their

  653. enemies will

  654. be burned

  655. up and

  656. destroyed.

  657. The Lord

  658. has spoken,

  659. we see at

  660. the end of

  661. 18.

  662. It's certain.

  663. God promises

  664. that his

  665. people will

  666. be victorious

  667. over all of

  668. their enemies.

  669. Covenant

  670. again.

  671. now we

  672. return in

  673. verses 19

  674. and 20

  675. to this

  676. idea of

  677. possession

  678. and taking

  679. possession of

  680. all this

  681. different

  682. territory.

  683. And here's

  684. where we get

  685. all these

  686. names that

  687. most of us

  688. probably have

  689. barely ever

  690. heard of.

  691. Some of

  692. which aren't

  693. even known

  694. locations.

  695. We don't

  696. even know

  697. where the

  698. likes of the

  699. Sephirad is.

  700. people are

  701. going to

  702. see.

  703. But what the

  704. prophet is doing

  705. here is sort

  706. of drawing this

  707. compass.

  708. In 19, he

  709. starts with the

  710. Negev, which is in

  711. the southern part

  712. of Judah, and

  713. then he goes

  714. east, north,

  715. west, full

  716. circle.

  717. You draw a

  718. compass and you

  719. hit all the four

  720. starred points on

  721. it, north,

  722. south, east,

  723. west, and you

  724. will see that each

  725. one of the

  726. directions of the

  727. compass will be

  728. occupied by God's

  729. people again.

  730. Verse 20, it's

  731. similar, but

  732. instead of the

  733. four points, it's

  734. the tippity-top

  735. recesses of

  736. Israel to the

  737. very, very

  738. bottom reaches of

  739. Judah.

  740. Again, the

  741. exiles of the

  742. host of the

  743. people of Israel

  744. shall possess the

  745. land of the

  746. Canaanites as

  747. far as

  748. Arafat, as

  749. north as God

  750. ever promised

  751. his people, and

  752. likewise in the

  753. south to those

  754. exiles of

  755. Jerusalem.

  756. God's people are

  757. going to retake

  758. possession of what

  759. God had promised

  760. to them.

  761. Now God's kind of

  762. talking crazy, isn't

  763. he?

  764. I mean, north,

  765. south, east, west,

  766. God, from the far

  767. north to the far

  768. south, the fullness

  769. of restoration to a

  770. group of people

  771. carted off to a

  772. foreign land?

  773. It seems crazy.

  774. not to mention, we

  775. see that now he's

  776. even bringing the

  777. northern tribes of

  778. Israel back into

  779. the equation.

  780. That people who,

  781. when the Assyrians

  782. came in at 722 and

  783. exiled all the ten

  784. tribes, and then

  785. they drop out of the

  786. radar of our

  787. Bibles.

  788. In verse 20, it

  789. says the exiles of

  790. those people, of

  791. the people of

  792. Israel.

  793. Israel will

  794. repossess land.

  795. So God has to do

  796. this huge work to

  797. orchestrate this kind

  798. of promise keeping.

  799. But he keeps his

  800. promises.

  801. He's had this great

  802. track record, right,

  803. throughout the history

  804. of the Bible to

  805. Israel, to all the

  806. nations.

  807. And there's no

  808. Assyrians or

  809. Babylonians or even

  810. stiff-necked

  811. Israelites or any

  812. amount of wrongdoing

  813. that's going to

  814. prevent our God from

  815. following through for

  816. his people and

  817. keeping all of his

  818. promises.

  819. We see shortly

  820. after Obadiah was

  821. written, year 553 BC,

  822. Edom is besieged and

  823. ceases to be a

  824. nation.

  825. Then just 15 years

  826. later, we see it

  827. recorded in the book

  828. of Ezra, chapter 1,

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  829. King Cyrus, this

  830. foreign king, allows the

  831. Jews to return home and

  832. to start rebuilding

  833. their temple, to

  834. re-fortify their

  835. cities.

  836. And we see God meant

  837. what he said.

  838. He keeps his

  839. promises.

  840. We rejoice today, too,

  841. because if he kept his

  842. promises beyond the

  843. destruction of Israel,

  844. beyond the exile of his

  845. people, he did so so

  846. that Christ would be

  847. born, that Jesus would

  848. be born into a world

  849. through the line of

  850. Abraham, through the

  851. line of David to rescue

  852. humanity from the grip

  853. of sin.

  854. So there is hope, real

  855. and lasting hope, because

  856. our God keeps his

  857. promises.

  858. promises.

  859. As people, we need to

  860. cling to this hope.

  861. Not a wishful thinking

  862. kind of hope, not just

  863. this pleasantries that

  864. kind of tides us over,

  865. not this hollow sort of

  866. isn't really true hope,

  867. but real hope, because

  868. Jesus is alive.

  869. So let me just encourage

  870. this morning that in

  871. light of the promises

  872. of God, that if you

  873. haven't done this

  874. already, that you

  875. start kind of making

  876. this mental Rolodex.

  877. Maybe you write them

  878. out on a three-by-five

  879. card, but you start

  880. writing out the

  881. promises of God, and

  882. you keep them near,

  883. because no doubt,

  884. there's coming times,

  885. and you've experienced

  886. them plenty already.

  887. There's day after day

  888. after day when we need

  889. God's promises.

  890. We need to recall

  891. them to mind, so that

  892. we don't get discouraged,

  893. so that we don't lose

  894. hope in his promise

  895. and in his goodness.

  896. For example, is anybody

  897. feeling condemned and

  898. defeated by sin?

  899. Bring the promise of

  900. 1 John 1, 9 to mind,

  901. that he who is faithful

  902. and just, when we

  903. confess our sins, he

  904. will forgive us and

  905. cleanse us from all

  906. unrighteousness.

  907. Put that promise in your

  908. Rolodex.

  909. Maybe you're overwhelmed,

  910. and you don't know how to

  911. pray, and you remember the

  912. promises of Romans 8 that

  913. says, the Holy Spirit

  914. helps us in our

  915. weaknesses, and when we

  916. don't know how to pray,

  917. he intercedes and prays

  918. for us.

  919. Anybody need that promise?

  920. Maybe you're feeling

  921. alone for God.

  922. You pull out the promise

  923. from Hebrews chapter 13

    Hebrews 13:5

  924. verse 5 that says,

  925. behold, I will never leave

  926. you nor forsake you, and

  927. you say, that's my God.

  928. He keeps his promises to

  929. me.

  930. Maybe you're questioning

  931. salvation, or you've

  932. questioned in the past,

  933. and you pull out the

  934. promise that says,

  935. everyone, everyone,

  936. everyone who calls upon

  937. the name of the Lord will

  938. be saved.

  939. And you say, amen.

  940. I never have to wonder.

  941. God is faithful.

  942. He keeps his promises,

  943. and that one's for me.

  944. Cling to his promises,

  945. church.

  946. Not in wishful thinking,

  947. but by faith, knowing

  948. that Jesus is alive and

  949. on the throne.

  950. And every promise of God

  951. is yes and amen in him.

  952. Hope in your sovereign

  953. king, church, because he

  954. keeps his promises.

  955. Finally, as we move back

  956. to the text, we see a

  957. third truth about God.

  958. It stirs our hearts full

  959. of hope.

  960. It's found in this verse

  961. 21, this kind of last

  962. phrase of Obadiah.

  963. It's his truth, that his

  964. kingdom is forever.

  965. His kingdom is forever.

  966. It seems like all along,

  967. the prophet Obadiah has

  968. been speaking to his

  969. people, hey, appearances

  970. can be deceiving.

  971. Right?

  972. In the ancient Near

  973. Eastern culture, the

  974. strength of a nation's

  975. deity, their God, was

  976. seen in military victory

  977. and in prosperity and

  978. wealth.

  979. And here God's speaking

  980. to Israel after they've

  981. been exiled.

  982. Saying, appearances can be

  983. deceiving.

  984. God ends this oracle saying, the

  985. kingdom shall be the Lord's.

  986. And again, he's not just

  987. talking crazy, but now he's

  988. got some explaining to do.

  989. It appears as though the

  990. Babylonian's deity is much

  991. stronger than Israel's.

  992. That Yahweh has finally met his

  993. match and he's defeated and his

  994. people are undone.

  995. But it's not so, God says.

  996. Dominion and authority have

  997. never changed hands.

  998. And they never will.

  999. Our God is in the heavens.

1000. He does all that he pleases.

  1001. Psalm 115.

  1002. Psalm 115.

1003. So we know that whether God is

1004. speaking to exiles who have been

1005. recently conquered and shipped off

1006. to Babylon, or if he's speaking to

1007. the 21st century church being

1008. persecuted in every corner of the

1009. world, or speaking to you in your

1010. personal battle with disease or

1011. conflict, God's kingdom is forever.

1012. He is on the throne.

1013. And all of history is moving toward

1014. the day when we will see him.

1015. When appearances align with reality.

1016. We never have to wonder again.

1017. Every eye will see him on that day.

1018. The book of Obadiah begins, if you

1019. remember from last week, it begins

1020. with this, thus says the Lord God.

1021. It begins with the one true living God

1022. who rules over all things as he wills.

1023. Who has no rival to his throne and will

1024. one day fully vindicate his name against

  1025. all unrighteousness.

1026. And the book ends the same way.

1027. The kingdom, the dominion, the rule, the

1028. authority, the power will be the Lord's.

1029. And in the middle of the book, you guessed

  1030. it, it's the same.

1031. Over and over and over again.

1032. In verse 2, Almighty God promises to

1033. bring this proud and arrogant nation of

1034. Edom down from his mountainous pride.

  1035. Verse 7, Yahweh says, I'll turn

1036. Edom's allies into his enemies.

1037. He won't know where it's coming from,

1038. but his armies will be dismayed and

  1039. they will be crushed.

1040. God says, surely on that day, in verses

1041. 8 and 9, I will cut off the nation of

  1042. Edom.

  1043. And he did.

  1044. He did.

1045. Because his kingdom is forever and he

1046. will not, he will not abide any sort of

  1047. enemies to that.

1048. Verses 10 to 14, it just goes on and the

1049. Lord says, I know, Edom, I know all of

1050. your transgressions against your brother

  1051. Israel.

1052. And he names them one after the other,

1053. after the other, after the other.

1054. It started in your heart and it just is

1055. displayed and even turning God's own

1056. people back toward their captors.

  1057. Rejoicing over their suffering.

1058. And so he says in verses 15 and 16 that

1059. justice is coming, not just upon Edom,

1060. but upon all the nations because God

1061. knows all things and is above all things

1062. and he alone is judge.

1063. He then promises deliverance and

1064. restoration and victory and he means it.

1065. And he's able to do even far more

1066. abundantly than all that we ask or think

1067. because he's God and he has no equal.

1068. So he says to Israel and he says to us

1069. today that appearances may be deceiving,

1070. friends, but God's word is always true.

  1071. He is in control.

  1072. His kingdom is forever.

1073. What appeared to be the end of the nation

1074. of Israel was actually God ensuring that

1075. his will would be done for Israel and for

  1076. all the nations.

1077. Little less than 600 years after Obadiah

1078. wrote this oracle, our Jesus was born.

1079. He was the son of Abraham, son of David.

1080. God promised over and over and over again

1081. that his Messiah would come.

1082. He would come from Judah in the line of

  1083. King David.

1084. He would sit on David's throne forever.

1085. He would be given dominion over all things.

  1086. His name is Jesus.

1087. He is right now seated at the right hand of

  1088. majesty on high.

1089. He right now is upholding the universe by the

  1090. word of his power.

1091. He has promised to come again to judge all

1092. people in all nations according to what they

  1093. have done.

1094. And when he comes, the victory that he brings,

1095. he will gather people from all the four

1096. compass directions, from the four corners

1097. of the world, he will gather his people to

  1098. himself forever.

1099. Deliverance will come for the people of God.

  1100. Jesus will bring it.

1101. Listen to Revelation 5 and this scene of

1102. worship after Jesus has come back.

  1103. And John writes this.

1104. Then I looked and I heard around the throne and

1105. the living creatures and the elders, the voice of

1106. many angels numbering myriads of myriads and

1107. thousands of thousands saying with a loud voice,

1108. worthy is the lamb who was slain to receive power and

1109. wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and

  1110. blessing.

1111. And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and

1112. under the earth and in the sea and all that is in them

1113. saying to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb be

1114. blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever.

1115. And the four living creatures said amen and the elders fell

  1116. down and worshiped.

1117. Through and through in our Bibles we see that our God's

  1118. kingdom is forever.

1119. Should give us great hope in the midst of adversity and

1120. suffering and the perplexities of life.

1121. God's kingdom is forever and Jesus is king forever.

1122. Christ the king today, store this word in your heart.

1123. Abide in this goodness that we are to hope together in our

  1124. sovereign king.

1125. We are to hope in him because he is just, because he keeps his

1126. promises, and because his kingdom is forever.

  1127. Let's pray.

1128. Father, would you impart faith by your spirit that we might go

  1129. away satisfied in Christ.

1130. Help us to hope in you despite appearances.

1131. Give us grace for everything we need.

1132. We worship and adore you, God.

  1133. Pray in Jesus' name.

  1134. Amen.
