  1. Have you ever seen a professional athlete, maybe they are a football quarterback or a hockey player or a boxer?

  2. They're kind of been through the competition and they're kind of dazed.

  3. Oftentimes you'll see them snort something, smelling salts, and it's designed to focus them.

  4. You see it in boxing a lot, in the corner, the manager dealing with a beat-up boxer, snaps open this small vial and it just is a pungent odor.

  5. And it wakes them up.

  6. This morning we have turned to the second letter of the seven churches.

  7. It's the letter, the message to Smyrna.

  8. And it is smelling salts for us.

  9. It's to focus us.

  10. If Revelation 2, 8 through 11 were a kind of smelling salts, it would be this stark reminder of what the stakes are.

  11. What one can lose for being a faithful follower of the risen, radiant, and reigning Jesus Christ.

  12. So this passage, these four verses, smelling salts to our soul.

  13. They would have been smelling salts to Smyrna, those Christians back in that first century.

  14. And it's smelling salts to us.

  15. Now don't get me wrong.

  16. Well, there is a glorious, glorious picture of Jesus here.

  17. And there is encouragement for our souls.

  18. But it's against the backdrop of suffering, tribulation.

  19. And these four verses are filled with words like tribulation, suffering, testing, prison, devil, dungeons, death, difficulty.

  20. Jesus speaks right into it.

  21. And this morning, Christ the King Church, on our fifth anniversary, God is providing us a sober reminder.

  22. The stakes are high.

  23. Jesus is worth it.

  24. So be faithful to the end.

  25. The stakes are high.

  26. Jesus is worth it.

  27. So be faithful to the end.

  28. Last week, when we were looking at the letter to the church in Ephesus,

  29. I showed you seven common components to all these seven layers.

  30. There is this structure in each one of these seven letters that's common to them all.

  31. It unifies them.

  32. And this letter to Smyrna is no exception.

  33. There's some little differences, though.

  34. And so we're going to start by looking at, one, the address to this church.

  35. It's to Smyrna.

  36. I'll tell you a little bit about it.

  37. And then John moves to addressing something about Christ.

  38. Something about some aspects of who he is that are very purposefully highlighted for this church.

  39. And then we move from church Christ to claim.

  40. Jesus says, I know some things about you, Smyrna.

  41. And from claim, he moves to commendation.

  42. It's not as clear as the commendation to Ephesus.

  43. Oh, but there is a commendation here.

  44. Think parenthesis.

  45. Jesus moves us from commendation then to speaking of a coming crisis.

  46. This is where it differs from the other letters.

  47. There's something about to happen to the Christians in Smyrna.

  48. And Jesus tells them.

  49. And in that coming crisis, he speaks a word, six point, of encouragement.

  50. And it's been echoing through the church for millennia.

  51. There's encouragement for us here, brothers and sisters.

  52. And he closes with a closing call.

  53. All these seven components are designed to be smelling salts to us.

  54. To be a sober reminder that the stakes are high.

  55. Your Jesus is worth it.

  56. And we're to be faithful to the end.

  57. And to be honest, I can't think of a better thing for us to hear on our anniversary Sunday.

  58. So let's start with this church in Smyrna.

  59. A little background.

  60. This Smyrna was a city about 35 miles, 40 miles north of Ephesus.

  61. And it was on this circuitous trade route that connected all these seven churches.

  62. And so we're moving up to Smyrna.

  63. And like Ephesus, it was a port on the Aegean Sea.

  64. And it sat on a mouth to a river.

  65. And so this city was an active trade city.

  66. Ephesus was about 225,000 people in the first century.

  67. Smyrna was about 200,000.

  68. So it was a big place.

  69. Two times the size of our city, Kenosha.

  70. But here's what you need to understand about Smyrna.

  71. They were staunchly, this city was staunchly pro-Roman.

  72. Rome was the imperial authority of this time.

  73. It was ruling over a huge amount of the earth at this time.

  74. And Smyrna had hitched its wagon to the Rome pony hundreds of years before this letter was written to this church in Smyrna.

  75. And so if you walked into the Agora, the marketplace of Smyrna, do you know what you would see?

  76. You would see t-shirts.

  77. Mia Roma!

  78. You would see coffee cups.

  79. Rome first!

  80. This city was staunchly, enthusiastically behind the Roman agenda.

  81. Now, let me just remind you.

  82. About just a year or two earlier, the Emperor Domitian, who was the emperor when the Smyrna church was existing,

  83. he required all of his citizen subjects in the entire Roman Empire to once a year go to an imperial temple,

  84. walk in, take a pinch of incense, throw it on the altar, and then confess with your lips that Caesar is Lord.

  85. He required it of everyone in the empire.

  86. It was a way to unite the empire around him in worship.

  87. So if you're a Christian living in this day, you know instantly that this is posing some kind of crisis.

  88. You're going to have to decide whether or not you're going to do that.

  89. Whether you're going to compromise and confess Caesar as your Lord,

  90. or stay true to Jesus as your one and only Lord.

  91. So you can imagine that if you're living in Smyrna in the first century,

  92. with this requirement to worship the emperor,

  93. you can bet on it that it would have been strictly enforced.

  94. With one exception.

  95. There was a group of people that this didn't apply to.

  96. The Jews living in the Roman Empire of the time.

  97. Now it's estimated there's five million Jews living in the world at this time.

  98. Four million were living within the boundaries of the Roman Empire.

  99. And Rome made a very shrewd political compromise with the Jews.

  100. They said to the Jews living all throughout their empire,

  101. Hey, you don't need to go to the temple.

  102. You don't need to throw the pinch of incense.

  103. You don't need to say Caesar is Lord.

  104. We recognize that you are a monotheist.

  105. We recognize you worship Yahweh alone.

  106. So just pay us a tax.

  107. We'll be happy.

  108. And the Jews agreed.

  109. Do you know why I'm telling you this history?

  110. Here's why.

  111. Romans viewed Christians as a sect of Judaism.

  112. So our Christian brothers and sisters living in the first century,

  113. from the Roman eyes, were considered kind of an offshoot of Judaism.

  114. So they were grandfathered into this exception.

  115. That they didn't have to worship Caesar.

  116. Because they were seen as being part of the Jewish people.

  117. Well, that's all well and good.

  118. Until the Jewish people who reject Jesus as a crucified Messiah, rejected them.

  119. And so when the Jews living in Smyrna, who rejected Jesus, rejected his church,

  120. all of a sudden these Christians of the church of Smyrna have been pushed out of the umbrella of Judaism

  121. and fully exposed to all penalties, death being one of them for not worshiping the emperor.

  122. Our brothers and sisters in Smyrna, you're going to meet them someday.

  123. They're in a precarious position.

  124. What is Jesus going to say to them?

  125. Let's now go from this church.

  126. The stakes all of a sudden got real high, didn't they?

  127. Let's go from this church now to looking at the Christ.

  128. And to the angel of the church of Smyrna write,

  129. The words of the first and the last who died and came to life.

  130. There are two things that Jesus wants this Smyrna church to know about him.

  131. Who he is, the first and the last, and what he's done.

  132. He's no longer dead.

  133. He's alive.

  134. Both are very important.

  135. Both are aimed at this church.

  136. That little phrase, the first and the last,

  137. well, it's a reference back to chapter 1, verse 17,

  138. where Jesus puts his hand on the prostrate John,

  139. and he says,

  140. Fear not, I'm the first and the last, the living one.

  141. It's a word of comfort.

  142. But what you also need to understand is that that phrase,

  143. first and last,

  144. when a Jewish person would hear that,

  145. or someone with a working understanding of the Old Testament,

  146. you know what would be popping in their head right then?

  147. First and last.

  148. Where have I heard that?

  149. First and last.

  150. Oh, Isaiah 41.

  151. Oh, Isaiah 43.

  152. Oh, Isaiah 44.

  153. Oh, Isaiah 48.

  154. Yahweh claimed to be the first and last.

  155. And in those passages,

  156. in Isaiah 40,

  157. Yahweh, the great I am,

  158. he is saying,

  159. I'm the first and last.

  160. I am sovereignly reigning over all things.

  161. And there's no one besides me.

  162. It's a huge claim.

  163. And so,

  164. Jesus is claiming to be God.

  165. And that he is sovereign over all,

  166. and there's none besides him.

  167. Not even the emperor.

  168. It's a huge claim.

  169. But he just doesn't stay there.

  170. He talks about who he is,

  171. the first and the last.

  172. And if you're a Christian living at that time,

  173. you'd be like,

  174. okay, if he's the first and the last,

  175. man, he is before me and after me.

  176. He is bookending me.

  177. He surrounds me,

  178. just like it is true today.

  179. But he moves on.

  180. Not just saying who he is.

  181. He talks about what he's done.

  182. Who died and came to life.

  183. You see that there?

  184. Who died and came to life.

  185. Our brothers and sisters in Smyrna,

  186. when they heard that,

  187. their hearts would have rose

  188. in their hearts.

  189. He's no longer talking about

  190. sovereign control over all things.

  191. He's not talking about

  192. sovereign control over the devil,

  193. or dungeons,

  194. or difficulty,

  195. or even death.

  196. Well,

  197. he is actually talking about death here.

  198. He says it right there.

  199. who died

  200. and came to life.

  201. Let me kind of translate

  202. this intention.

  203. Jesus is saying to this church,

  204. you need not fear death

  205. because

  206. the one speaking to you

  207. has overcome it

  208. and has authority over it.

  209. See?

  210. Jingle, jingle.

  211. I've got the keys

  212. to death and Hades.

  213. 1.18.

  214. Here's what Jesus is saying

  215. in this church

  216. who's facing persecution.

  217. Even unto death.

  218. Verse 10.

  219. Here's what he's saying to them.

  220. Hey,

  221. my people,

  222. I was dead

  223. and now I'm alive.

  224. I beat death

  225. to death

  226. with my death

  227. and I'm going to throw death

  228. into the second death.

  229. death.

  230. That's what he's saying.

  231. I'm its victor.

  232. I won

  233. over death.

  234. Jesus is speaking

  235. to this church

  236. as one

  237. from the

  238. other side

  239. of death.

  240. I've come through

  241. and I'm going to bring you

  242. through too,

  243. Smyrna.

  244. I've got you.

  245. So how do you think

  246. our brothers and sisters

  247. in Smyrna

  248. who are facing persecution

  249. even unto death,

  250. when they hear this letter

  251. read to them,

  252. how do you think

  253. that they're going to respond?

  254. I think they're going to respond

  255. with the sense of,

  256. okay, okay, okay.

  257. He is in control.

  258. He's won the victory

  259. and that translates,

  260. those truths

  261. about Jesus

  262. translate

  263. into present hope

  264. which translate

  265. then into

  266. present day courage

  267. to press on.

  268. imagine that one day

  269. you're sitting

  270. at the great

  271. marriage feast

  272. of the Lamb

  273. and you're sitting

  274. next to someone

  275. never seen him before

  276. and you're like,

  277. hey, my name is Mike.

  278. You know,

  279. I'm 21st century

  280. church of Kenosha

  281. and he says back to me,

  282. oh,

  283. my name is Alexander

  284. first century

  285. church of Smyrna.

  286. I'm like,

  287. oh, man.

  288. Alexander,

  289. talk to me, man.

  290. Talk to me.

  291. What was it like

  292. to get the letter?

  293. Mike,

  294. let me tell you,

  295. right up to that point

  296. before that messenger

  297. brought the book

  298. of Revelation

  299. and Jesus spoke

  300. those words,

  301. I'll tell you what,

  302. I was flipping out.

  303. I was freaking out.

  304. I was thinking,

  305. we're done.

  306. I cannot confess

  307. Caesar as my Lord.

  308. I can't go into

  309. that temple.

  310. I can't throw a pinch

  311. of incense on that altar.

  312. I can't do it

  313. and because we got

  314. kicked out by the Jews,

  315. I can't do any of that.

  316. So I'm flipping out.

  317. I'm thinking we got to move.

  318. I'm thinking we got to

  319. get somewhere else.

  320. What does this mean

  321. for my kids?

  322. What does it mean

  323. for my wife?

  324. What does it mean

  325. for my livelihood?

  326. And then the messenger

  327. showed up with the book

  328. and Jesus spoke

  329. to our church

  330. and he said,

  331. he said,

  332. Smyrna,

  333. my church in Smyrna,

  334. I'm in control.

  335. I'm the first

  336. and the last.

  337. I've won the victory

  338. over death

  339. and do you know

  340. what happened?

  341. Mike,

  342. do you know

  343. what happened?

  344. No, Alexander,

  345. tell me what happened.

  346. He gave us strength.

  347. Two months later,

  348. two of my friends

  349. got arrested.

  350. One was killed.

  351. We remained faithful

  352. to the end.

  353. I didn't know

  354. what was happening

  355. but we were holding

  356. on to Jesus.

  357. Can you imagine that?

  358. These words meant

  359. everything to our

  360. brothers and sisters

  361. in Smyrna

  362. in the first century.

  363. Now here's the gap

  364. we need to bridge

  365. right now.

  366. We hear these things

  367. and we're like,

  368. okay,

  369. they were persecuted

  370. intensely facing death.

  371. We don't really

  372. have to deal with it

  373. as Christians

  374. living in the 21st century

  375. here in America.

  376. Okay,

  377. that's good to know.

  378. Let's move on.

  379. Well,

  380. let me ask you this.

  381. How do you think

  382. the church of Ephesus

  383. after hearing

  384. what Jesus said

  385. to them,

  386. return to me

  387. as your first love,

  388. how do you think

  389. they would have responded

  390. when they heard

  391. what the risen Christ

  392. said to the church

  393. of Smyrna

  394. because they would

  395. have heard it?

  396. Their brothers and sisters

  397. 40 miles down the street.

  398. Do you think

  399. they would have responded,

  400. honey,

  401. man,

  402. man,

  403. I'm glad we moved

  404. out of Smyrna

  405. 14 years ago.

  406. Man,

  407. I'm glad we're out

  408. of that place.

  409. I mean,

  410. Ephesus is looking

  411. really good right now.

  412. Maybe they would have

  413. said that

  414. but I think

  415. they would have

  416. eventually got,

  417. I think the pastors

  418. of the church

  419. of Ephesus

  420. would have said,

  421. hey,

  422. gang,

  423. we just heard word

  424. from Smyrna

  425. that they're facing

  426. some hard stuff.

  427. We're calling

  428. a prayer meeting.

  429. We're going to pray

  430. for them.

  431. We're going to ask

  432. Jesus,

  433. who's our first love,

  434. that they would keep

  435. Jesus as their

  436. first love

  437. and that they would

  438. endure to the end.

  439. That they won't

  440. confess that Caesar

  441. is Lord

  442. because he's not.

  443. That they would

  444. confess

  445. Jesus

  446. as their only

  447. one Lord

  448. and deal

  449. with the consequences.

  450. He's the first

  451. and the last.

  452. He died

  453. and is now alive.

  454. The stakes

  455. are high.

  456. Jesus

  457. is worth it.

  458. Be faithful

  459. to the end.

  460. This past week

  461. I

  462. saw a video,

  463. five minute video.

  464. If you want to

  465. write this down,

  466. I would encourage you

  467. to write it down.

  468. The website is

  469. persecution.com.

  470. It's the website

  471. of the Voice

  472. of the Martyrs.

  473. And it's an organization

  474. committed to

  475. making known

  476. the plight

  477. of the persecuted

  478. church,

  479. our brothers and sisters

  480. around the world

  481. who are suffering

  482. directly for

  483. confessing Jesus

  484. as their Lord

  485. and they are there

  486. to encourage

  487. the persecuted church.

  488. church.

  489. This past week

  490. I watched a video,

  491. you'll see it

  492. if you go there,

  493. about

  494. Christians,

  495. four Christians

  496. in Pakistan,

  497. in Fassal,

  498. Pakistan.

  499. And what

  500. they are having

  501. to live with

  502. because they're

  503. a minority group

  504. in a predominantly

  505. Muslim country.

  506. It's going to

  507. sadden you,

  508. but it is going

  509. to encourage you.

  510. One of the things

  511. that's going to be

  512. important for us

  513. as a church

  514. moving forward,

  515. I think we're

  516. going to be

  517. dealing with

  518. our own persecution

  519. in the States,

  520. mildly,

  521. but we need

  522. to know what's

  523. going on with

  524. our brothers and

  525. sisters around

  526. the world.

  527. We need to know

  528. what's going on

  529. in Pakistan,

  530. in China,

  531. North Korea,

  532. in Iran,

  533. and in Nepal.

  534. who he is

  535. and what he's

  536. done.

  537. He's worth it.

  538. He's worth it.

  539. And then we move

  540. from that to the

  541. claim.

  542. This Jesus,

  543. he claims

  544. something.

  545. Verse 9,

  546. I know,

  547. I know your

  548. tribulation,

  549. I know your

  550. poverty,

  551. I know your

  552. being slandered,

  553. he knows all

  554. these things.

  555. He knows all

  556. these things

  557. about that

  558. church,

  559. and about the

  560. six other

  561. churches,

  562. and about all

  563. the other

  564. churches at

  565. that time,

  566. and about every

  567. church of every

  568. time and every

  569. place since.

  570. He's dialed

  571. into his

  572. people.

  573. He knows

  574. what's going

  575. on.

  576. He knows

  577. the tribulation,

  578. the pressure

  579. that they were

  580. experiencing

  581. because they

  582. had confessed

  583. Jesus as

  584. Lord,

  585. and they

  586. weren't going

  587. to waver

  588. on it.

  589. He knows

  590. the crushing

  591. pressure,

  592. the suffocating

  593. pressure,

  594. the wilting

  595. pressure,

  596. the isolating

  597. pressure that

  598. comes with that.

  599. He knows,

  600. I know.

  601. He knows

  602. their poverty.

  603. He knows

  604. that these

  605. Christians in

  606. Smyrna,

  607. he knows that

  608. doors were

  609. closing of

  610. opportunities for

  611. his people in

  612. that city

  613. because they

  614. confessed him

  615. as Lord.

  616. Could you

  617. imagine you

  618. walking in,

  619. you see on

  620. the marketplace,

  621. help wanted,

  622. you walk in,

  623. you're like,

  624. hey, I'd like

  625. the job,

  626. and it comes

  627. out that you're

  628. a Christian,

  629. and that

  630. shopkeeper says,

  631. well, position

  632. filled, only to

  633. find out the

  634. next day your

  635. friend who's not

  636. a Christian got

  637. the job after

  638. you.

  639. That's what was

  640. going on.

  641. No work,

  642. only indignified

  643. work.

  644. that voice of

  645. the martyrs,

  646. I almost showed

  647. it here this

  648. morning.

  649. What you will

  650. see will rend

  651. your heart,

  652. but it will

  653. encourage your

  654. heart.

  655. Poverty.

  656. Material poverty

  657. on account of

  658. Jesus.

  659. Jesus knows.

  660. And Jesus knew

  661. that they were

  662. being slandered.

  663. And the slander

  664. of those who say

  665. that they are Jews

  666. and are not,

  667. but are synagogue

  668. of Satan.

  669. The Jews in

  670. Smyrna of this

  671. time, who hadn't

  672. believed that Jesus

  673. is the crucified

  674. and risen Messiah,

  675. they were slandering,

  676. speaking falsely,

  677. intending to hurt

  678. with their words

  679. our brothers and

  680. sisters living at

  681. that time.

  682. Think about this.

  683. Think about, like,

  684. the Roman governing

  685. officials in Smyrna.

  686. They had a 1-800

  687. tip line.

  688. And that 1-800

  689. tip line was,

  690. hey, if you see

  691. anybody not

  692. worshiping Caesar

  693. as Lord, you just

  694. call us and we'll

  695. take care of that

  696. insurrectionist.

  697. Well, there was a lot

  698. of anonymous Jewish

  699. people who had

  700. rejected Jesus,

  701. calling that 1-800

  702. number.

  703. And you know what?

  704. On the next day,

  705. there was a lot of

  706. knocks on our

  707. brothers and sisters

  708. doors.

  709. Hey, have you

  710. confessed Caesar

  711. as Lord?

  712. Let's go together

  713. now to the temple

  714. and you can do the

  715. pinch of incense

  716. on the altar so

  717. that we can watch

  718. you confess Caesar

  719. as Lord.

  720. Slander.

  721. But Jesus knew.

  722. Jesus knew what

  723. was going on.

  724. these particular

  725. Jews who were

  726. claiming to be

  727. real descendants

  728. of Abraham.

  729. Jesus knew

  730. that they were

  731. not.

  732. That's Jesus

  733. speaking.

  734. Jesus knew

  735. that their

  736. hearts,

  737. though they were

  738. professing to be

  739. devoted to

  740. Yahweh,

  741. they were far

  742. from Yahweh

  743. because they had

  744. rejected Him

  745. as the Messiah.

  746. Did you notice

  747. the connection

  748. between slander

  749. and Satan?

  750. Satan,

  751. the devil,

  752. the enemy of our

  753. soul,

  754. he is the

  755. accuser of the

  756. brethren.

  757. And what these

  758. Jews who had

  759. rejected Jesus,

  760. they were trying

  761. to say in the

  762. name of Yahweh,

  763. were actually

  764. opposing the

  765. God of the

  766. Bible by

  767. causing God's

  768. new people,

  769. the church,

  770. to suffer.

  771. They were

  772. doing Satan's

  773. work.

  774. That's why they're

  775. called a synagogue

  776. of Satan.

  777. But Jesus knew.

  778. He knows the

  779. pressure that they

  780. were under.

  781. He knows the

  782. impoverty, the

  783. impoverishment that

  784. they were suffering.

  785. He knows the

  786. slander they are

  787. experiencing.

  788. He knows our

  789. last five years

  790. and all that

  791. went into it.

  792. He knows the

  793. next five years

  794. of Christ the

  795. King Church and

  796. all that will go

  797. into that.

  798. He knows what's

  799. coming.

  800. He knows what

  801. storms are brewing.

  802. He knows it.

  803. He knows.

  804. And He's the

  805. first and the

  806. last.

  807. The one who

  808. died and is

  809. now alive.

  810. Who gave

  811. Himself for us.

  812. He claims.

  813. He knows.

  814. He knows

  815. everything.

  816. For those

  817. brothers and

  818. sisters of ours

  819. in Smyrna and

  820. currently in China

  821. and North Korea

  822. and Nepal and

  823. Iran, the stakes

  824. are unusually

  825. high.

  826. But Jesus is

  827. worth it.

  828. He knows.

  829. So we're to be

  830. faithful to the

  831. end.

  832. There's a

  833. commendation in

  834. this text.

  835. It's

  836. parenthetical.

  837. I know your

  838. tribulation and

  839. your poverty.

  840. But you are

  841. rich.

  842. Rich in whose

  843. eyes?

  844. Rich in the

  845. eyes of Jesus.

  846. Not in the

  847. eyes of the

  848. world.

  849. You are

  850. rich.

  851. Jesus knows

  852. their tribulation.

  853. He knows their

  854. material poverty.

  855. He knows that

  856. they're being

  857. slandered.

  858. He knows what's

  859. around the

  860. corner, that

  861. they're going to

  862. be tossed into

  863. prison by the

  864. devil and

  865. they're going to

  866. face death.

  867. He knows it

  868. all.

  869. And He also

  870. knows that

  871. they are rich.

  872. What is Jesus

  873. talking about?

  874. What kind of

  875. wealth is this?

  876. Jesus is

  877. describing a

  878. characteristic of

  879. blessedness.

  880. Remember the

  881. Sermon on the

  882. Mount?

  883. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  884. 5?

  885. Listen to Jesus'

  886. words.

  887. Blessed are you

  888. when others

  889. revile you and

  890. persecute you and

  891. utter all kinds of

  892. evil against you

  893. falsely on my

  894. account.

  895. Slander.

  896. When that

  897. happens, rejoice

  898. and be glad for

  899. your reward is

  900. great in heaven.

  901. Your reward is

  902. great in heaven.

  903. But you are

  904. rich.

  905. For so they

  906. persecuted the

  907. prophets who

  908. were before you.

  909. You see, Jesus

  910. considers richness

  911. as faithfulness to

  912. Him.

  913. That's wealth.

  914. That's

  915. riches gained in

  916. heaven.

  917. That little

  918. parenthetical

  919. comment, but you

  920. are rich, is a

  921. commendation from

  922. the first and the

  923. last, the one who

  924. died and is alive,

  925. to this suffering

  926. church.

  927. He knows that

  928. they're suffering

  929. for Him.

  930. And He's saying,

  931. oh, sweet

  932. church, in my

  933. eyes, you are

  934. rich.

  935. The stakes are

  936. high.

  937. Jesus is worth

  938. it.

  939. Be faithful to

  940. the end.

  941. We move from

  942. commendation now to

  943. the coming crisis in

  944. verse 10.

  945. Do not fear what you

  946. are about to suffer.

  947. Behold, the devil is

  948. about to throw some of

  949. you into prison.

  950. That you may be

  951. tested.

  952. And for 10 days you

  953. will have tribulation.

  954. Jesus knows the

  955. tribulation, poverty,

  956. slandering, their

  957. real wealth, and He

  958. also knows what's

  959. right around the

  960. corner.

  961. It goes again to

  962. what He knows.

  963. Their situation is

  964. about to get worse.

  965. Here Jesus is once

  966. again pulling back

  967. the curtain and

  968. helping us to see an

  969. intersection between

  970. what is seen and

  971. what is unseen in the

  972. spiritual world.

  973. world.

  974. The devil is about to

  975. throw some of you in

  976. prison.

  977. The devil.

  978. Satan is behind this

  979. imminent imprisonment

  980. of some of our

  981. brothers and sisters

  982. from Smyrna.

  983. Now I seriously doubt

  984. that the synagogue in

  985. Smyrna or the Roman

  986. officials living in that

  987. time, that they were

  988. consciously aware that

  989. they were being used by

  990. Satan, but they were

  991. being used by Satan.

  992. He's the prince of the

  993. power of the air, the

  994. ruler of this world, at

  995. least for the time

  996. being.

  997. And the slander of

  998. these pseudo-Jews

  999. most likely was landing

  1000. these Christian brothers

  1001. and sisters of ours,

1002. some of them, in a Roman

  1003. prison in Smyrna.

  1004. Here's what I want to

  1005. help you think about.

  1006. Here's what this means

  1007. for us.

  1008. Satan is real.

  1009. He's active.

1010. And he works on a scale

1011. that we tend not to be

  1012. aware of because we

  1013. don't see it.

  1014. He uses governments.

  1015. He uses religions.

  1016. He uses economies.

  1017. All to oppress God's

  1018. people, the church.

1019. Jesus is out of reach for

  1020. Satan now.

1021. And so what Satan does is

1022. he takes the next best

  1023. shot.

  1024. The people Jesus has

  1025. bought with his blood.

1026. This is a sober reminder

1027. of what we find in

  1028. Ephesians 6.

1029. Our battle is not against

  1030. flesh and blood, but

  1031. against the rulers,

  1032. against the authorities,

  1033. against the cosmic powers

  1034. over this present

  1035. darkness, against the

  1036. spiritual forces of

  1037. darkness in the heavenly

  1038. places.

  1039. And

1040. Jesus helps us to see

  1041. things as they really

  1042. are.

1043. And Jesus knows it all.

  1044. He sees it clearly.

1045. Now when we talk about

1046. Satan, I know that can

1047. make some people feel a

  1048. little unsettled and a

  1049. little uncomfortable, so

1050. let me just remind you of

  1051. something.

  1052. Our risen Jesus, he's

  1053. already been given

  1054. dominion over all things.

1055. It's every square inch of

  1056. this planet is his.

1057. By virtue of his work on

  1058. the cross and his

  1059. resurrection, it's all his

  1060. now.

1061. It's been handed to him.

1062. But the devil is real.

  1063. And he's on a rampage

  1064. right now.

1065. He knows his days are

  1066. numbered.

1067. So here's where we live

  1068. right now.

  1069. The cosmic conflict between

1070. God and the devil is

  1071. real, but it's not a

  1072. standoff between two

  1073. equally matched opponents.

  1074. Jesus has already

  1075. decisively won the

  1076. victory over sin, death,

  1077. and the devil.

1078. His kingdom of grace is

1079. boots on the ground now,

1080. and his saving reign is

  1081. spreading to the nations.

1082. So his reign has already

1083. begun, but his reign has

  1084. not yet been fully

  1085. realized.

  1086. But there's a coming a day

  1087. when it will be.

1088. And we're living between the

1089. already and the not yet.

1090. And in the meantime, there is

  1091. a spiritual street fight

1092. going on beyond our typical

  1093. eyes can see.

1094. The devil will not relinquish

1095. what once he thought was

  1096. his.

1097. So here's what this means.

  1098. Christ's church will suffer

  1099. until Jesus returns.

  1100. That's what this means.

  1101. We're in a street fight.

  1102. The stakes are high.

  1103. Jesus is worth it.

1104. Be faithful to the end.

  1105. On one level,

  1106. Satan is

  1107. wreaking real

  1108. havoc on real

  1109. people,

  1110. real churches,

  1111. because he hates

  1112. the church of Christ,

  1113. because he hates

  1114. Christ.

  1115. But on another level,

  1116. God is using

  1117. Satan's schemes

  1118. for his

  1119. kingdom

  1120. purposes.

  1121. Has anybody else

  1122. been feeling something

1123. as we've been reading this?

  1124. Maybe you just haven't

  1125. put words on it.

1126. It goes something like this.

  1127. Okay, I'm reading

1128. Jesus saying to this church,

1129. do not fear what you're

  1130. about to suffer.

1131. Behold, the devil is about

1132. to throw some of you into

  1133. prison,

1134. that you may be tested,

1135. and for ten days you'll

  1136. have tribulation.

  1137. Be faithful unto death.

  1138. Can I just ask a question,

  1139. Jesus?

1140. Why are you letting this

  1141. happen?

1142. Why are you letting your

  1143. people

  1144. be thrown into prison

  1145. by the devil

  1146. and then face

  1147. death?

  1148. Why are you letting

  1149. this happen,

  1150. Jesus?

  1151. Why do we have

  1152. brothers and sisters

  1153. right now

  1154. in prison in China,

  1155. North Korea,

  1156. Iran,

  1157. Nepal?

  1158. Why?

  1159. Anybody want to know

  1160. why?

  1161. Why?

1162. The answer's in the text.

1163. that you may be tested.

  1164. It's purposed.

  1165. There be imprisoned.

  1166. Jesus letting it happen

  1167. is purposed.

  1168. So let's take a step back

1169. and I want to help you

  1170. understand the purpose.

1171. Jesus was using the Jews

  1172. of Smyrna,

  1173. the Romans of Smyrna,

  1174. even Satan's schemes

  1175. in Smyrna

  1176. to carry out

  1177. the advance

  1178. of his kingdom

  1179. of grace.

  1180. Here's what you need

  1181. to know.

  1182. The suffering

  1183. of the church

  1184. of Christ

  1185. is not an obstacle

  1186. to the advance

  1187. of the kingdom.

  1188. The suffering

  1189. of the church

  1190. of Christ

  1191. is a means

  1192. to the advance

  1193. of the gospel.

  1194. Our brothers and sisters

  1195. around the world,

  1196. suffering,

  1197. it's not taken

  1198. by Jesus' surprise.

  1199. it's not outside

  1200. of his will.

1201. It's part of his purpose.

  1202. The Lord orchestrating

  1203. events

  1204. so that Christians,

  1205. that their faith

  1206. in him

  1207. proves true

  1208. and as they remain

  1209. faithful to their

  1210. confession

  1211. that Jesus

  1212. is the Lord,

  1213. do you know

  1214. what happens?

  1215. Guards

  1216. hear the gospel.

  1217. People

  1218. in positions

  1219. of authority

  1220. hear about Jesus.

  1221. If you follow

  1222. what happened

  1223. to Paul

1224. in the book of Acts,

  1225. you will see

  1226. that his suffering

  1227. served a kingdom

  1228. proclamation purpose.

  1229. Jesus uses

  1230. persecution

  1231. of his people

  1232. in order to purify

  1233. them

  1234. and to proclaim

  1235. his kingdom.

  1236. it's a package.

  1237. Years ago,

  1238. I was listening

  1239. to WNBI

  1240. and I heard

  1241. it was either

  1242. a Cambodian

  1243. or Vietnamese

  1244. pastor being interviewed.

  1245. He was

  1246. for decades

  1247. a pastor

  1248. of a persecuted

  1249. church in his country.

  1250. He himself

  1251. had suffered

  1252. greatly

  1253. and his church

  1254. had suffered

  1255. much

  1256. and when the host,

  1257. the American host

  1258. asked this man,

  1259. hey,

  1260. what can we be

  1261. praying for you

  1262. for?

  1263. Do you know

  1264. what this guy said?

  1265. I will never

  1266. forget it.

  1267. Don't ask God

  1268. to stop

  1269. the persecution.

  1270. I'm like,

  1271. what is he

  1272. saying?

  1273. And then he said

  1274. this,

  1275. God

  1276. uses

  1277. the persecution

  1278. of his people

  1279. like the tightening

  1280. of a violin string

  1281. so that the

  1282. persecuted church

  1283. could add

  1284. a minor key

  1285. to the praise

  1286. of the risen

  1287. and reigning

  1288. Jesus Christ.

  1289. God

  1290. uses

  1291. persecution

  1292. of his people

  1293. to prove

  1294. them

  1295. and purify

  1296. them

  1297. in order

  1298. for him

  1299. to proclaim

  1300. the kingdom

  1301. through them.

  1302. Do you know

  1303. what the pressure

  1304. of persecution

  1305. produces

  1306. in the people

  1307. of Christ?

  1308. Praise.

  1309. How glorious

  1310. and worthy

  1311. our risen

  1312. and radiant

  1313. and risen

  1314. Lord truly is

  1315. and when you

  1316. put that praise

  1317. and throw

  1318. in the backdrop

  1319. of that

  1320. dungeons

  1321. and the devil

  1322. and difficult

  1323. and death

  1324. you've got

  1325. a shocking

  1326. testimony.

  1327. Crisis is coming

  1328. church

  1329. saying to his

  1330. Smyrna

  1331. Christians

  1332. this crisis

  1333. is actually

  1334. the risen

  1335. Christ

  1336. purifying

  1337. his people

  1338. and using

  1339. them to

  1340. proclaim

  1341. his glory.

  1342. The stakes

  1343. are high

  1344. Jesus

  1345. is worth

  1346. it

  1347. be faithful

  1348. to the end

  1349. we come

  1350. to the

  1351. encouragement

  1352. verse 10

  1353. do not fear

  1354. what you're about

  1355. to suffer

  1356. be faithful

  1357. unto death

1358. and I will give you

  1359. the crown of life

  1360. he says

  1361. don't fear

  1362. and we think

  1363. okay

  1364. okay

  1365. there's

  1366. the difficulty

  1367. there's

  1368. the devil

  1369. who's going to

  1370. throw us

  1371. into a dungeon

  1372. and then

  1373. there is

  1374. the whole

  1375. death thing

  1376. I mean really

  1377. what's not to fear

  1378. what's not to fear

  1379. and Jesus says

  1380. do not be fearing

  1381. do not be fearing

  1382. what's coming

  1383. Jesus

  1384. why are we not

  1385. to be fearing

  1386. what's coming

  1387. he says

  1388. be faithful

  1389. unto death

  1390. be faithful

  1391. to me

  1392. unto death

  1393. to not compromise

  1394. to not

  1395. shrink back

  1396. to not

  1397. step out

  1398. and hide

  1399. to not

  1400. compromise

  1401. to be faithful

  1402. unto Jesus

  1403. unto death

  1404. Jesus

  1405. Jesus

  1406. is our

  1407. king

  1408. he rules

  1409. our heart

  1410. we're not

  1411. to fear

  1412. the devil

  1413. or difficulty

  1414. or dungeons

  1415. or death

  1416. because

  1417. because he

  1418. is the first

  1419. and the last

  1420. because he

  1421. has victory

  1422. over death

  1423. and he

  1424. is promised

  1425. to give

  1426. the crown

  1427. of life

  1428. to all those

  1429. who are faithful

  1430. to the end

  1431. that crown

  1432. of life

  1433. was a laurel

  1434. wreath

  1435. that we're

  1436. giving to

  1437. victors

  1438. in the

  1439. Olympic Games

  1440. you won a race

  1441. you get a

  1442. laurel

  1443. wreath

  1444. put around

  1445. your head

  1446. and so here's

  1447. what Jesus

  1448. is saying

  1449. here

  1450. hey

  1451. if you

  1452. are to die

  1453. in Smyrna

  1454. do you know

  1455. how I think

  1456. about that

  1457. Jesus thinks

  1458. about that

  1459. as a W

  1460. as a win

  1461. for him

  1462. and the

  1463. reward

  1464. is a crown

  1465. of life

  1466. that word

  1467. life

  1468. describes

  1469. the nature

  1470. of the

  1471. crown

  1472. it is

  1473. everlasting

  1474. life

  1475. in

  1476. symbol

  1477. I've bought

  1478. you with my

  1479. blood

  1480. be faithful

  1481. to the end

  1482. and I will

  1483. crown you

  1484. with the life

  1485. I've promised

  1486. so when

  1487. remember who's

  1488. saying this

  1489. the first

  1490. and the last

  1491. he's sovereign

  1492. over all

  1493. even every

  1494. persecution

  1495. on earth

  1496. he is the

  1497. one who died

  1498. and who came

  1499. to life

  1500. he is uniquely

  1501. qualified

  1502. to hand out

  1503. a crown

  1504. of everlasting

  1505. life

  1506. he himself

  1507. died

  1508. and was

  1509. raised

  1510. this is

  1511. Christ's

  1512. encouragement

  1513. to us

  1514. do not

  1515. fear

  1516. be faithful

  1517. to me

  1518. until

  1519. death

  1520. happy

  1521. anniversary

  1522. Christ the

  1523. King

  1524. Church

  1525. the stakes

  1526. are high

  1527. Jesus is

  1528. worth it

  1529. be faithful

  1530. to the end

  1531. the closing

  1532. call

  1533. verse 11

1534. he who has an ear

  1535. let him hear

  1536. hear what the

  1537. spirit says

  1538. to the churches

  1539. the one who

  1540. conquers will not

  1541. be hurt

  1542. by the second

  1543. death

  1544. first there's

  1545. the call

  1546. to heed

  1547. what he's

  1548. saying

  1549. take to

  1550. heart

  1551. what I'm

  1552. saying

  1553. church

  1554. take to

  1555. heart

  1556. be sobered

  1557. but be

  1558. encouraged

  1559. I'm risen

  1560. radiant

  1561. and rainy

  1562. but then

  1563. there's the

  1564. call to

  1565. overcome

  1566. like the

  1567. crown of

  1568. life

  1569. it's got a

  1570. promise

  1571. attached to

  1572. it

  1573. the one

  1574. who conquers

  1575. the one

  1576. who is

  1577. faithful

  1578. unto death

  1579. unto the

  1580. end

  1581. will not

  1582. be hurt

  1583. by the

  1584. second death

  1585. last week

  1586. the one

  1587. who conquers

  1588. in Ephesus

  1589. is the one

  1590. who keeps

  1591. Jesus

  1592. as their

  1593. first love

  1594. and they

  1595. will eat

  1596. of the

  1597. tree of

  1598. life

  1599. in paradise

  1600. now the

  1601. one who

  1602. conquers

  1603. who's

  1604. faithful

  1605. to Jesus

  1606. in the

  1607. face of

  1608. persecution

  1609. all the

  1610. way to

  1611. the end

  1612. they are

  1613. promised

  1614. that they

  1615. will not

  1616. be hurt

  1617. by the

  1618. second death

  1619. now what

  1620. is the

  1621. second death

  1622. Revelation

    Revelation 20:14

  1623. chapter 20

  1624. verse 14

  1625. the second

  1626. death is

  1627. the lake

  1628. of fire

  1629. the ultimate

  1630. eternal

  1631. death

  1632. and what we

  1633. learn from

  1634. chapter 20

  1635. in Revelation

  1636. is that the

  1637. devil in his

  1638. demons

  1639. the false

  1640. prophet and

  1641. the beast

  1642. the anti-trinity

  1643. they're going to

  1644. get tossed

  1645. into the

  1646. lake of

  1647. fire

  1648. we also

  1649. learn that

  1650. death itself

  1651. gets thrown

  1652. into the

  1653. second death

  1654. the lake

  1655. of fire

  1656. we also

  1657. learn that

  1658. all who

  1659. have not

  1660. bound the

  1661. knee to

  1662. Jesus

  1663. and have

  1664. not been

  1665. faithful to

  1666. the end

  1667. their names

  1668. are not in

  1669. the book

  1670. of life

  1671. they'll get

  1672. thrown into

  1673. the lake

  1674. of fire

  1675. too

  1676. in fact

  1677. do you know

  1678. what else

  1679. gets thrown

  1680. into the

  1681. lake of

  1682. fire

  1683. all

  1684. dungeons

  1685. in the

  1686. old

  1687. earth

  1688. get thrown

  1689. into the

  1690. lake of

  1691. fire

  1692. because there's

  1693. no dungeons

  1694. in the

  1695. new

  1696. Jerusalem

  1697. but for

  1698. those of

  1699. us who

  1700. overcome

  1701. there is

  1702. no chance

  1703. no chance

  1704. whatsoever

  1705. that we

  1706. will be

  1707. thrown into

  1708. the lake

  1709. of fire

  1710. because we

  1711. got a

  1712. crown of

  1713. life on

  1714. it's been

  1715. given to

  1716. us by our

  1717. king

  1718. who's

  1719. victorious

  1720. over

  1721. death

  1722. the second

  1723. death

  1724. poses no

  1725. threat to

  1726. us

  1727. we're

  1728. destined

  1729. for a

  1730. city of

  1731. peace

  1732. the new

  1733. Jerusalem

  1734. and when

  1735. we get

  1736. there we're

  1737. going to

  1738. throw our

  1739. victor crowns

  1740. at his

  1741. glowing feet

  1742. and we're

  1743. going to

  1744. say something

  1745. we're going

  1746. to say not

  1747. to us

  1748. oh lord

  1749. not to

  1750. us

  1751. but to

  1752. your name

  1753. give glory

  1754. for the

  1755. sake of

  1756. your steadfast

  1757. love and

  1758. faithfulness

  1759. in winning

  1760. our victory

  1761. over

  1762. sin

  1763. death

  1764. and the

  1765. devil

  1766. the second

  1767. death is

  1768. no threat

  1769. to those

  1770. who are

  1771. faithful to

  1772. Jesus to

  1773. the end

  1774. in the

  1775. words of

  1776. one

  1777. LA pastor

  1778. those who

  1779. are born

  1780. once

  1781. die twice

  1782. but those

  1783. who are

  1784. born twice

  1785. die once

  1786. if you

  1787. belong to

  1788. Jesus

  1789. you've been

  1790. born twice

  1791. you need

  1792. not fear

  1793. the second

  1794. death

  1795. we're called

  1796. to overcome

  1797. brothers and

  1798. sisters the

  1799. stakes are

  1800. high

  1801. Jesus is

  1802. so worth

  1803. it

  1804. so be

  1805. faithful to

  1806. the end

  1807. this is

  1808. smelling salts

  1809. for us

  1810. in the

  1811. 21st

  1812. century

  1813. and I

  1814. can't

  1815. think of

  1816. a better

  1817. word for

  1818. us to

  1819. hear on

  1820. this

  1821. anniversary

  1822. Sunday

  1823. in fact

  1824. let's

  1825. continue

  1826. celebrate the

  1827. victory

  1828. by coming

  1829. to the

  1830. table

  1831. reflecting on

  1832. the death

  1833. Jesus won

  1834. his death

  1835. over death

  1836. let's pray

  1837. Lord

  1838. Jesus

  1839. Christ

  1840. you

  1841. are the

  1842. risen

  1843. one

  1844. you are

  1845. the first

  1846. and last

  1847. God

  1848. would you

  1849. sensitize

  1850. us to

  1851. make us

  1852. aware

  1853. even

  1854. break our

  1855. hearts

  1856. for our

  1857. brothers and

  1858. sisters around

  1859. the world

  1860. and God

  1861. would you

  1862. help us

  1863. to be

  1864. faithful to

  1865. the end

  1866. it's the

  1867. name of

  1868. Jesus

  1869. we pray

  1870. amen
