  1. So this morning we're in the book of Revelation, chapter 3.

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  2. We're going to be taking a look at this letter to the church of Philadelphia.

  3. For the last five weeks, we've been making our way through these seven letters

  4. that Jesus commanded the Apostle John to send out in this circuit

  5. around the territory of Asia Minor, which is modern-day Turkey,

  6. so a little bit northwest of the country of Israel.

  7. And John, of course, we know is on the island of Patmos,

  8. not because he likes vacationing, but because of his faithful witness to the word.

  9. He's been exiled there.

  10. The testimony he has made about Jesus has not gone over well,

  11. and he has been sent away.

  12. And yet, his work is not over.

  13. In fact, he is to continue bearing witness to the faithful witness, Jesus Christ.

  14. So John has been writing these letters,

  15. dictating the words of Jesus to these seven churches.

  16. And as we've seen in the last five weeks, it's a mixed bag with these churches.

  17. So far, all but one have been rebuked in some way,

  18. chastised in some way by Jesus for their lack of faithfulness to him.

  19. Some churches are tolerating false teaching,

  20. the teaching of the Nicolaitans or the false prophetess Jezebel.

  21. Others are compromising their holiness and befriending the world.

  22. Ephesus, the first church we looked at, has lost its first love.

  23. They've been doing all the right things,

  24. but there's no love and affection for the risen King Jesus.

  25. Smyrna is the only church so far that has been praised by Jesus without any sort of correction.

  26. And Jesus says that they can expect in the near future imprisonment and death as a reward for their faithfulness.

  27. Each letter concludes with Jesus' promise to each and every person who overcomes,

  28. who remains faithful to him.

  29. And these promises are incredible.

  30. Eternal joy in the presence of God,

  31. established as his people,

  32. possessed by the Lord Jesus,

  33. and on and on they go.

  34. So all of these letters share this call by Jesus to overcome.

  35. And they share the authoritative word of Jesus and his knowledge of the works of these churches.

  36. And all of them come with a promise of some sort of conflict in this life.

  37. For those churches being faithful to Jesus,

  38. they can expect conflict with the world.

  39. And for those churches who are compromising their loyalty to Jesus,

  40. they can expect to be in conflict with him.

  41. So today we look at the Church of Philadelphia.

  42. Lucas, thank you, brother, for reading this for us today.

  43. Because God's word is what's important,

  44. I want to read it to us again,

  45. not because of Lucas' poor job,

  46. but because the word is sufficient for us.

  47. I'd rather you hear it than me.

  48. So follow along as I read for us again

  49. the letter to the Church of Philadelphia.

  50. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

  51. the words of the Holy One,

  52. the True One,

  53. who has the key of David,

  54. who opens and no one will shut,

  55. who shuts and no one opens.

  56. I know your works.

  57. I know your works.

  58. Behold, I have set before you an open door

  59. which no one is able to shut.

  60. I know that you have but little power.

  61. And yet you have kept my word

  62. and have not denied my name.

  63. Behold,

  64. I will make those of the synagogue of Satan

  65. who say that they are Jews and are not,

  66. but lie.

  67. Behold,

  68. I will make them come

  69. and bow down before your feet

  70. and they will learn

  71. that I have loved you.

  72. Because you have kept the word

  73. about my patient endurance,

  74. I will keep you from the hour of trial

  75. that is coming on the whole world

  76. to try those who dwell on the earth.

  77. I am coming soon.

  78. Hold fast what you have

  79. so that no one may seize your crown.

  80. The one who conquers,

  81. I will make him a pillar

  82. in the temple of my God.

  83. Never shall he go out of it.

  84. And I will write on him

  85. the name of my God

  86. and the name of the city of my God,

  87. the new Jerusalem,

  88. which comes down from my God

  89. out of heaven

  90. and my own new name.

  91. He who has an ear,

  92. let him hear what the Spirit says

  93. to the churches.

  94. In this letter,

  95. we see Jesus

  96. commending the church of Philadelphia

  97. for their faithfulness to him.

  98. It is this commendation

  99. that leads us to the main point

  100. of what Jesus is getting at

  101. for us today.

  102. Hear this, church.

  103. Jesus is calling us

  104. to exalt him

  105. in word

  106. and in deed

  107. until the end.

  108. Jesus is calling us

  109. to exalt him,

  110. to lift him high,

  111. to glorify his name

  112. here and now

  113. in both our word

  114. and in our deeds

  115. until the end.

  116. We're going to see this

  117. worked out

  118. by just walking

  119. through this letter

  120. like we would

  121. any other letter.

  122. Any good letter,

  123. of course,

  124. has a dear so-and-so,

  125. I'm writing to you

  126. and then

  127. sort of the body

  128. of the letter

  129. with the main content.

  130. So we're going to take a look

  131. at the introduction

  132. found in verse 7

  133. and then we're going to walk

  134. through the body

  135. of the letter

  136. found in verses 8 to 12.

  137. So first the introduction.

  138. The recipient of this letter

  139. we read in verse 7

  140. is to the angel

  141. of the church

  142. in Philadelphia.

  143. So this is

  144. a church

  145. in the city of Philadelphia,

  146. not Pennsylvania,

  147. the one over

  148. in the Middle East region.

  149. A city that,

  150. by God's grace,

  151. has a local body

  152. of believers.

  153. People have heard

  154. of the good news

  155. of the life,

  156. death,

  157. and resurrection

  158. of Jesus Christ

  159. and have forsaken

  160. the world

  161. and allied themselves

  162. with Him.

  163. And it's a church

  164. that Jesus loves

  165. very much

  166. and wants to speak to

  167. for their benefit.

  168. So a bit of background

  169. about this city.

  170. A couple things

  171. to keep in mind

  172. and we'll see them

  173. worked out a little bit

  174. in how Jesus

  175. speaks to this church.

  176. First,

  177. there was a,

  178. the region

  179. was on a fault line

  180. and there were

  181. earthquakes

  182. that regularly

  183. unsettled this region

  184. of the world.

  185. In fact,

  186. the last church

  187. we looked at,

  188. Sardis,

  189. in AD 17,

  190. there was an earthquake

  191. that kind of hit

  192. about right on top

  193. of that city,

  194. but it had this

  195. lasting,

  196. devastating effect

  197. for the people

  198. of Philadelphia.

  199. Aftershock

  200. after aftershock

  201. after aftershock,

  202. year after year

  203. after year

  204. to where a lot

  205. of the city

  206. crumbled.

  207. And in fact,

  208. the citizens

  209. of Philadelphia

  210. had to appeal

  211. to the Roman Empire

  212. for government

  213. assistance to come

  214. and rebuild

  215. their land.

  216. Fortunately for them,

  217. Rome agreed to this.

  218. In part,

  219. probably because

  220. of the nickname

  221. this city was given.

  222. Philadelphia was called

  223. the Gateway

  224. to the East.

  225. It was a strategic city

  226. in the eyes

  227. of the Roman Empire

  228. that would spread

  229. their culture

  230. and their philosophy

  231. and their way of life

  232. deep into the reaches

  233. of Asia Minor.

  234. It was a strategic city.

  235. So that's who

  236. is receiving the letter

  237. and that's kind of

  238. the city they live in.

  239. And now we turn

  240. and see who's writing

  241. this letter.

  242. In fact,

  243. who's speaking this letter

  244. that John records.

  245. Of course,

  246. it's Jesus himself

  247. and we see in verse 7

  248. how he describes himself.

  249. And as with all

  250. of these letters,

  251. the way that Jesus

  252. describes himself

  253. matters to this

  254. particular church

  255. at this particular time.

  256. He picks up

  257. on the vision

  258. that John sees

  259. of him in chapter 1

  260. and he's picking out

  261. specific things

  262. about that vision

  263. to reveal about himself

  264. to these individual churches.

  265. Here Jesus leads out

  266. the words of the Holy One.

  267. This is a term

  268. we instantly recognize

  269. from the Old Testament

  270. to be reserved

  271. exclusively for God.

  272. Jesus pulls no punches.

  273. He self-identifies

  274. as God.

  275. He is the Holy One.

  276. And he continues,

  277. the true one

  278. springs to our mind

  279. things of faithfulness

  280. and reliability

  281. that Jesus

  282. is claiming

  283. to be trustworthy.

  284. John calls him

  285. the faithful witness

  286. in chapter 1,

  287. verse 5

  288. and we know

  289. that his faithful witness

  290. to his father

  291. cost him his life.

  292. Jesus is telling

  293. the truth

  294. every single time

  295. he opens his mouth.

  296. This Jesus has,

  297. we keep reading,

  298. the key of David.

  299. David.

  300. Well we've seen

  301. this key language

  302. in the vision

  303. of chapter 1

  304. where Jesus says

  305. in verse 18

  306. I have the keys

  307. of death

  308. and Hades.

  309. And here it's

  310. the key of David.

  311. Key is always

  312. significant

  313. speaking of authority.

  314. So it says

  315. essentially

  316. that Jesus says

  317. I have the key

  318. of David

  319. just like I have

  320. the key

  321. of death

  322. and Hades.

  323. I have authority

  324. over life

  325. and death.

  326. I have authority

  327. over eternity.

  328. And David

  329. specifically

  330. is speaking

  331. of the eternal

  332. kingdom of God.

  333. Jesus rules over it

  334. as its exclusive

  335. king.

  336. He says

  337. this authority

  338. allows him

  339. to open doors

  340. that no one

  341. can shut

  342. and shut doors

  343. that no one opens.

  344. Jesus holds

  345. exclusive rights

  346. over matters

  347. of life and death.

  348. Friend,

  349. if you want

  350. into the kingdom

  351. of heaven

  352. Jesus alone

  353. grants access.

  354. In fact,

  355. he himself

  356. is the access

  357. into the kingdom

  358. of heaven.

  359. He shed his blood

  360. and died

  361. for all who would

  362. enter

  363. by faith in him.

  364. Even this introduction

  365. it just continues

  366. to speak

  367. of his call

  368. to us

  369. to exalt

  370. him

  371. to the end.

  372. So,

  373. we know now

  374. who this letter

  375. is written to

  376. and who is

  377. writing the letter,

  378. who is speaking

  379. the letter.

  380. Now,

  381. we turn to the body

  382. starting in verse 8

  383. and what's he want

  384. this church

  385. to know.

  386. Look at verse 8.

  387. The first words

  388. Jesus makes

  389. is a claim.

  390. Like every single letter,

  391. all seven of them,

  392. the first thing

  393. he leads in

  394. after the introduction

  395. is I know

  396. your works.

  397. It's still true today.

  398. Jesus is still

  399. in the midst

  400. of all of his churches

  401. and he still knows

  402. the works

  403. of all of his churches.

  404. So,

  405. for us,

  406. if before God

  407. our conscience

  408. is clear

  409. and we

  410. know

  411. that we are

  412. seeking to be faithful,

  413. this brings joy

  414. and gratitude

  415. and a peace

  416. that surpasses

  417. understanding.

  418. but if we are

  419. compromising

  420. in any way,

  421. this should bring

  422. terror

  423. if we understand it,

  424. that Jesus still

  425. today knows

  426. our works.

  427. He's not far off.

  428. He's not aloof.

  429. He hasn't taken a nap.

  430. He knows.

  431. But his knowledge

  432. is not here

  433. intended to just

  434. keep us in the dark.

  435. It's intended

  436. for us to come

  437. in repentance

  438. and bow before him

  439. confessing

  440. and finding the grace

  441. of forgiveness.

  442. He knows

  443. our works

  444. too,

  445. church.

  446. And we'll

  447. jump over

  448. this next

  449. sentence

  450. in verse 8

  451. for a minute,

  452. the behold,

  453. to pick back up

  454. on how Jesus

  455. is going to

  456. describe the works

  457. of this church.

  458. I know your works

  459. and then he picks

  460. back up,

  461. I know,

  462. and he gives

  463. three little pieces

  464. of knowledge

  465. about this church

  466. and their works.

  467. first,

  468. I know that you

  469. have but little

  470. power,

  471. and yet you

  472. have kept my word

  473. and have not

  474. denied my name.

  475. Now this,

  476. of course,

  477. is not the kind

  478. of church

  479. that is going

  480. to be praised

  481. by man's wisdom.

  482. They're weak.

  483. They don't have

  484. much ability.

  485. Maybe it's because

  486. there weren't

  487. very many Christians

  488. in Philadelphia.

  489. Maybe it's an

  490. intelligence thing

  491. or a social

  492. status thing,

  493. but for whatever

  494. reason,

  495. this church is weak.

  496. And Jesus just

  497. moves right past it.

  498. He doesn't bring

  499. a hammer down.

  500. He doesn't say,

  501. how dare you,

  502. you weaklings.

  503. He commends them.

  504. He praises them

  505. because they've

  506. kept his word

  507. and not denied

  508. his name.

  509. They're being praised

  510. for faithfulness

  511. to Jesus

  512. in spite of

  513. their weakness.

  514. In fact,

  515. it probably

  516. even contributed

  517. to their being

  518. able to praise

  519. him and honor

  520. him with their

  521. lives.

  522. Second Corinthians,

  523. Jesus tells Paul,

  524. my power is made

  525. perfect in weakness.

  526. It's not something

  527. to be ashamed of.

  528. Jesus does not

  529. harass them over it.

  530. He commends them

  531. for their faithfulness.

  532. And notice that

  533. it's a specific

  534. faithfulness.

  535. Right?

  536. There's this,

  537. you've kept my word

  538. and you have not

  539. denied my name.

  540. They've been lifting

  541. high the name of

  542. Jesus.

  543. They've been exalting

  544. their first love,

  545. refusing to compromise

  546. or tolerate any sort

  547. of outside influences

  548. other than the voice

  549. and name and person

  550. of Jesus,

  551. their Lord.

  552. There's no hint

  553. of false teaching

  554. that they are

  555. welcoming into

  556. their church.

  557. Jesus commends

  558. them,

  559. well done.

  560. In saying that

  561. they've kept

  562. his word,

  563. he intends to say

  564. that you've been

  565. living for me,

  566. you're living your

  567. life for my

  568. namesake.

  569. And you've aligned

  570. your life such

  571. with my word.

  572. You're obeying

  573. my word.

  574. And that second

  575. half of their

  576. faithfulness is,

  577. you have not

  578. denied my name.

  579. They've been

  580. identifying verbally

  581. and audibly

  582. to identifying

  583. with Jesus.

  584. us.

  585. We should not

  586. see in this

  587. simply avoiding

  588. denying him

  589. as if,

  590. if faced with

  591. death or denial,

  592. they choose

  593. death.

  594. But they're

  595. active in this.

  596. They're proclaiming

  597. Jesus' name because

  598. Jesus hasn't

  599. mentioned anything

  600. about death

  601. in our letter,

  602. and yet we see

  603. in verse 9

  604. that there's

  605. opposition.

  606. This is an

  607. advancing of

  608. Jesus' name,

  609. friends,

  610. not just avoiding

  611. denying it.

  612. Though they're

  613. being opposed

  614. by this group

  615. from the synagogue

  616. of Satan,

  617. though they are

  618. exalting Jesus'

  619. name and trouble

  620. is coming upon

  621. them,

  622. Jesus praises

  623. their faithfulness.

  624. And that's

  625. pretty much all

  626. he says about

  627. their works.

  628. It's so

  629. interesting.

  630. There's no

  631. correction,

  632. there's no

  633. criticism,

  634. there's no,

  635. you're doing

  636. pretty good,

  637. but if you

  638. just add

  639. this thing,

  640. you'll be

  641. really good.

  642. It's just,

  643. good job,

  644. you're being

  645. faithful.

  646. That's why in

  647. verse 11 he

  648. simply just says,

  649. hold fast,

  650. hold fast,

  651. stay the course.

  652. Church of

  653. Philadelphia was

  654. on the right

  655. track.

  656. They were doing

  657. what they were

  658. supposed to be

  659. doing,

  660. and Jesus

  661. praises them

  662. for their

  663. faithfulness.

  664. But obviously

  665. we haven't

  666. finished the

  667. letter,

  668. there's much

  669. more text

  670. in front of

  671. us,

  672. so what we

  673. need to see

  674. is that

  675. after Jesus

  676. says,

  677. I know your

  678. works,

  679. the rest of

  680. this letter

  681. really brings

  682. Jesus to

  683. center stage.

  684. And he says,

  685. I know your

  686. works,

  687. and now I

  688. want you to

  689. know my

  690. works.

  691. What I've

  692. already done,

  693. and what I'm

  694. about to do,

  695. and what I

  696. will do at

  697. the end.

  698. So that's how

  699. we're going to

  700. proceed through

  701. the rest.

  702. We're going to

  703. focus on

  704. Jesus and

  705. his activity

  706. that he

  707. reveals to

  708. this church,

  709. and all of

  710. it,

  711. friends,

  712. all of it

  713. is meant to

  714. encourage and

  715. motivate all

  716. of God's

  717. people to

  718. faithfulness to

  719. Jesus, to

  720. continue exalting

  721. him in word and

  722. deed with our

  723. whole lives until

  724. the very end.

  725. So first,

  726. back in verse

  727. 8, that behold

  728. that we jumped

  729. over earlier,

  730. we go back

  731. there to see

  732. that Jesus has

  733. done something

  734. for this

  735. church that's

  736. quite remarkable.

  737. He says,

  738. Behold,

  739. look,

  740. see,

  741. I've set

  742. before you an

  743. open door which

  744. no one is able

  745. to shut.

  746. This immediately

  747. should start

  748. triggering the

  749. introduction,

  750. the person of

  751. Jesus who has

  752. the key of

  753. David and

  754. opens doors no

  755. one can shut,

  756. shuts doors no

  757. one can open.

  758. remember he's

  759. the true one

  760. so he's

  761. trustworthy at

  762. this word and

  763. so we need to

  764. ask, what's

  765. this door?

  766. There's some

  767. reason to see it

  768. as an opportunity

  769. for ministry,

  770. that Jesus is

  771. opening this

  772. door for the

  773. Philadelphia

  774. church, though

  775. they're weak,

  776. to advance the

  777. gospel, to

  778. somehow be on

  779. mission and to

  780. see that their

  781. work is rewarded

  782. in faithfulness.

  783. The Apostle

  784. Paul uses this

  785. kind of language

  786. at the end of

  787. some of his

  788. letters to

  789. churches saying,

  790. please pray for

  791. us that God

  792. would open a

  793. door for the

  794. advancement of

  795. the gospel.

  796. And Philadelphia

  797. after all is the

  798. gateway to the

  799. east.

  800. They're poised to

  801. be a gospel

  802. headquarters to

  803. get this news

  804. out throughout

  805. Asia Minor,

  806. not advancing

  807. Greek culture but

  808. advancing the good

  809. news about Jesus.

  810. So I think a

  811. little bit of

  812. what's going on

  813. in this door

  814. quite possibly is

  815. this opportunity

  816. that Jesus has

  817. set before the

  818. church.

  819. We could point

  820. to those kind of

  821. opportunities in

  822. our midst,

  823. can't we church?

  824. There are

  825. faithful people of

  826. our congregations

  827. serving children,

  828. both our own

  829. children and those

  830. of our communities.

  831. Every Sunday,

  832. a couple guys

  833. make breakfast,

  834. a couple more,

  835. preach the word

  836. of God to anyone

  837. from the community

  838. who comes in and

  839. wants to be with

  840. us.

  841. These are doors that

  842. God has opened for

  843. us to advance his

  844. name in the city.

  845. And there are many

  846. more, individual

  847. after individual

  848. after individual,

  849. can testify to

  850. this reality in our

  851. lives because God

  852. wants Jesus' name

  853. exalted here in

  854. Kenosha, in our

  855. midst, and everywhere

  856. in this city.

  857. He wants this to

  858. happen, church.

  859. And he's entrusted

  860. us with this good

  861. news.

  862. But there's also,

  863. I think, an even

  864. more significant

  865. piece to this door

  866. language that Jesus

  867. uses here.

  868. So, setting aside

  869. the very real

  870. reality that there

  871. are doors of

  872. opportunity in our

  873. midst, let's

  874. consider again

  875. what he means.

  876. In verse 7,

  877. Jesus calls

  878. himself the

  879. true one.

  880. And in verse 9,

  881. he calls this,

  882. the local Jews

  883. in the city of

  884. Philadelphia,

  885. a synagogue of

  886. Satan who are,

  887. in fact,

  888. liars.

  889. the door language

  890. is really

  891. answering the

  892. question, who

  893. is it that

  894. holds the key

  895. to the kingdom

  896. of God?

  897. Is it the

  898. ethnic Israelites

  899. who have received

  900. the law of God?

  901. Or is it God's

  902. son, Jesus

  903. Christ?

  904. Christ?

  905. Imagine this news

  906. from Jesus if you

  907. were among the

  908. Christians in

  909. Philadelphia.

  910. You're being

  911. harassed,

  912. slandered,

  913. perhaps even

  914. violently persecuted

  915. by the local Jews

  916. who are zealous

  917. for God,

  918. but misplaced.

  919. And you hear

  920. from Jesus,

  921. fellowship with

  922. God in his

  923. kingdom is

  924. mine to

  925. give,

  926. and I have

  927. opened the

  928. door to you.

  929. That's the

  930. door.

  931. Entry into

  932. the kingdom

  933. of heaven where

  934. we will

  935. fellowship with

  936. the risen King

  937. Jesus forever.

  938. Jesus alone

  939. holds the key

  940. to that place,

  941. and he himself

  942. accomplishes the

  943. work needed for

  944. all of God's

  945. people to

  946. enter.

  947. God's

  948. love.

  949. So this

  950. open door is

  951. referencing the

  952. access that the

  953. people of God

  954. have to his

  955. eternal kingdom.

  956. Jesus has

  957. opened it,

  958. and remember,

  959. no one

  960. will shut it.

  961. Jesus continues

  962. from,

  963. I want you to

  964. know about my

  965. past work,

  966. to I want you to

  967. know about this

  968. future work,

  969. and he's going to

  970. kind of move in

  971. stages from

  972. near to far,

  973. or soon to

  974. down the road.

  975. Verse 9,

  976. we've already

  977. looked at who

  978. these people are

  979. that are

  980. persecuting the

  981. church of

  982. Philadelphia,

  983. but we need to

  984. see what Jesus

  985. promises will

  986. happen, what

  987. will come of

  988. them.

  989. Notice the

  990. repetition of

  991. behold, I will

  992. make, in

  993. verse 9.

  994. Second, behold,

  995. I will make,

  996. we see that I

  997. will make them

  998. come and bow

  999. down before

  1000. your feet, and

  1001. they will learn

  1002. that I have

  1003. loved you.

  1004. Isn't that

  1005. remarkable?

  1006. The very enemies

  1007. of God's people

  1008. in this city will

  1009. come and bow

  1010. down at their

  1011. feet.

  1012. That's an

  1013. incredible promise

  1014. for people facing

  1015. such opposition.

  1016. confession.

  1017. I imagine that

  1018. Jesus is

  1019. particularly excited

  1020. about these

  1021. words, not

  1022. because of the

  1023. eventual end

  1024. times triumph of

  1025. God over all of

  1026. his enemies, but

  1027. because of what

  1028. he's been getting

  1029. at throughout this

  1030. letter that I want

  1031. us to see so

  1032. clearly.

  1033. He might be

  1034. speaking about the

  1035. last judgment,

  1036. when all of God's

  1037. enemies and God's

  1038. people will be

  1039. vindicated, when

  1040. God's people will

  1041. be shown to be

  1042. true and all of

  1043. God's enemies shown

  1044. to be false.

  1045. Maybe.

  1046. There's reason to

  1047. think that Jesus

  1048. has a much more

  1049. glorious image

  1050. on his mind.

  1051. Jesus is saying

  1052. that the fruit of

  1053. faithful witness

  1054. will be salvation

  1055. for the enemies

  1056. of God.

  1057. You will see

  1058. your enemies

  1059. come to faith,

  1060. not all of them,

  1061. but some of them,

  1062. because you're

  1063. remaining faithful

  1064. to the name

  1065. of Jesus.

  1066. The reward of

  1067. the church of

  1068. Philadelphia's

  1069. faithfulness to

  1070. Jesus is new

  1071. believers from

  1072. old enemies.

  1073. Jesus.

  1074. It's a church

  1075. not tolerating

  1076. falsehood.

  1077. It's a church

  1078. not befriending

  1079. the world.

  1080. And once again,

  1081. right, once again

  1082. we see that the

  1083. foolishness of

  1084. God triumphs over

  1085. the wisdom of

  1086. men at every

  1087. single turn.

  1088. This weak

  1089. church, this

  1090. unable church,

  1091. by their

  1092. faithfulness, is

  1093. winning converts

  1094. to Jesus.

  1095. It's glorious.

  1096. Does anybody

  1097. need that today?

  1098. Friends, it is

  1099. always, always

  1100. wholehearted,

  1101. fiery faithfulness

  1102. to Jesus that

  1103. bears fruit.

  1104. We ought to

  1105. praise God for

  1106. the fruit of the

  1107. faithful witness of

  1108. our brothers and

  1109. sisters in

  1110. Philadelphia.

  1111. But Jesus isn't

  1112. done.

  1113. He's just kind of

  1114. getting started

  1115. actually.

  1116. He's going to go

  1117. in verse 10 and

  1118. share his promise

  1119. for this church.

  1120. If you look there,

  1121. you'll notice this

  1122. connection.

  1123. It's because you

  1124. have kept, I will

  1125. keep you.

  1126. Jesus foretells an

  1127. hour of trial that

  1128. is coming upon the

  1129. whole world.

  1130. And just a quick

  1131. note that when

  1132. Revelation uses

  1133. those who dwell on

  1134. the earth,

  1135. thanks Billy,

  1136. he always is

  1137. referring to the

  1138. non-believers.

  1139. non-believers.

  1140. But Jesus here is

  1141. not focused primarily

  1142. on the non-believers.

  1143. He's focused on his

  1144. promise to the

  1145. church and he says,

  1146. because you have

  1147. kept my word,

  1148. I will guard you

  1149. in the hour of

  1150. trial.

  1151. Jesus protects,

  1152. keeps, guards

  1153. those who keep

  1154. his word.

  1155. period.

1156. It's why he says in

  1157. verse 11,

  1158. hold fast,

  1159. that no one may

  1160. take your crown.

1161. This is a matter of

  1162. life and death.

  1163. The victory crowned at

1164. the end of this race is

  1165. eternal life in the

  1166. presence and glory of

  1167. God.

  1168. So hold fast.

  1169. Christ.

  1170. And then Jesus moves

1171. us way out into the

  1172. end of all things

  1173. future in verse 12.

  1174. He arrives at the

  1175. time when future just

  1176. moves right into

  1177. eternity.

  1178. The time when the

  1179. need of endurance

  1180. ceases to exist.

  1181. The time when those

  1182. who have conquered

  1183. rest forever.

  1184. And it's because

  1185. Jesus has conquered

  1186. and there remain no

  1187. enemies for him to

  1188. defeat.

  1189. There's two elements

1190. to the promise to the

  1191. one who conquers in

  1192. verse 12.

  1193. A permanent residence

  1194. in God's house and

  1195. being possessed by

  1196. Jesus forever.

  1197. forever.

  1198. This would be

  1199. particularly sweet

  1200. news for a city

  1201. being pummeled by

  1202. earthquakes.

  1203. This infrastructure

  1204. is shaken.

  1205. Requiring frequent

  1206. evacuation of the

  1207. very city that they

  1208. call home for safety

  1209. reasons.

  1210. And Jesus says,

1211. I will make the one

  1212. who overcomes a

  1213. pillar in the temple

  1214. of my God.

  1215. Pillars do not

  1216. move.

  1217. They're unshakable.

  1218. And never shall he

1219. go out of it again.

  1220. It's permanent.

  1221. A permanent fixture,

  1222. permanent place of

  1223. prominence in the

  1224. unshakable house of

1225. God for the one who

  1226. overcomes.

  1227. And for a church

  1228. likely having been

  1229. shut out of the

  1230. city synagogues and

  1231. shut out of

  1232. family and friends

  1233. who've disowned

  1234. them, Jesus says,

  1235. you'll be mine

  1236. forever.

  1237. You belong to me.

  1238. The ultimate end for

  1239. all those who exalt

  1240. Jesus now will be

  1241. everlasting joy then.

  1242. Named by the Lord

  1243. Jesus and possessed

  1244. by him.

  1245. I hope you're seeing

  1246. that throughout this

  1247. letter, Jesus is

  1248. calling us,

  1249. Christ the King

  1250. Church in Kenosha,

  1251. Wisconsin in 2018,

  1252. Jesus is calling us

1253. to exalt him in word

1254. and in deed until the

  1255. end.

  1256. to lift his name

  1257. high, to speak with

  1258. affection for him, to

  1259. do good to others.

1260. So how do we do

  1261. this?

1262. In the last, in the

  1263. remaining time, I want

1264. to try and answer this

  1265. question for us.

1266. How do we do this?

1267. The simple answer is we

1268. open our mouths and we

  1269. live for him.

1270. We speak with joy about

  1271. the testimonies of God's

  1272. grace that he has

1273. gifted to us in Christ.

  1274. We share with others

1275. that Jesus is the King

1276. of Kings and the Lord

  1277. of Lords.

1278. That he shed his blood

  1279. for sinners like us.

1280. That he is risen and

  1281. radiant and reigning now

  1282. and forever.

  1283. forever.

1284. And we live for him.

  1285. We follow his example.

  1286. We show compassion to

  1287. our neighbors.

  1288. We seek the well-being

  1289. and the interest of

  1290. others.

  1291. Those in life groups

  1292. studying 1 Peter, you'll

  1293. recognize this one.

1294. We don't repay evil for

  1295. evil or reviling for

  1296. reviling.

1297. But on the contrary, we

  1298. bless.

1299. For to this we've been

  1300. called.

  1301. It's clear, right?

  1302. It's simple.

  1303. But it's nowhere near

  1304. easy.

1305. Jesus is so clear what

  1306. he's calling us to.

1307. And yet this is really

  1308. hard work, church, isn't

  1309. it?

  1310. We know this.

1311. And there are many ways

1312. that we can talk ourselves

1313. out of this and that we

1314. can shrink back from this.

1315. And our text gives us

1316. three traps that we must

  1317. avoid.

1318. Three traps that we must

  1319. avoid.

  1320. There's one in verse 8,

1321. one in verse 9, and one

  1322. in verse 10.

1323. When Jesus says in verse

  1324. 8, I know your works, you

  1325. have but little power.

  1326. There's a trap that we all

1327. face of focusing on our

  1328. own abilities or lack

  1329. thereof.

  1330. The risen Jesus

  1331. identifies this in the

  1332. church of Philadelphia that

  1333. you don't have much

1334. strength and yet what does

  1335. he say?

1336. He's not bothered by it.

  1337. Because the salvation of

1338. sinners is not in human

  1339. ability.

  1340. It requires someone to

1341. open a door that is

  1342. beyond us and our

  1343. human

  1344. abilities.

1345. So we must not fall into

1346. the trap of focusing on

1347. ourselves as we seek to

1348. exalt Jesus in word and

  1349. deed until the end.

1350. We won't get very far if we

  1351. fall into that trap.

1352. Second trap from verse 9 is

1353. the trap of focusing on our

  1354. current opposition.

  1355. opposition.

1356. There were Jewish citizens in

  1357. Philadelphia that were

1358. opposing the church of God.

1359. And it's easy to shrink back in

  1360. the midst of opposition.

  1361. We know this.

1362. The devil who prowls around like a

1363. roaring lion loves to knock the

1364. church of Jesus off course.

  1365. He's well equipped.

1366. He's seeking to harm and

1367. unsettle God's people at every

  1368. turn.

1369. He wants the opposition that we

1370. face here in Kenosha and

  1371. wherever our relationships are

  1372. found.

1373. He wants that opposition to

  1374. silence us.

1375. Or to get us on the defensive.

  1376. Shrinking back from faithfulness

  1377. to Jesus.

1378. He wants to quiet our witness

  1379. and perhaps produce compromise

1380. and blending in with the world

  1381. that's against our Lord.

  1382. There are many enemies.

1383. Many who oppose the kingdom of

  1384. God and his righteousness.

1385. But we must not focus on the

  1386. opposition.

  1387. opposition.

1388. It's a trap that will be our

  1389. undoing.

1390. There's one more trap from verse

1391. 10 and it's the trap of focusing

  1392. out into the future.

1393. The worry about what's ahead.

1394. The opposition that maybe we

1395. aren't facing right now but you

1396. can see the storm clouds kind of

1397. gathering and moving in on the

  1398. horizon.

1399. Jesus knows about that too,

  1400. doesn't he?

1401. Verse 10, we see that there's an

1402. hour of trial that's coming upon

  1403. the whole world.

1404. We cannot let future trials,

1405. concerns about what might be,

1406. become a trap to us.

1407. We all know about how it is,

1408. right, to fear the immediate

1409. fallout from opening our mouth

1410. to share Jesus with somebody.

1411. We can go, oh, I just read

1412. something from the Psalms this

1413. morning that's so relevant to

1414. what this person is sharing and I

1415. just, God, help me remember it so

1416. I can share it with my non-believing

  1417. co-worker.

1418. And then it's like this default

1419. switch that just flips in us,

  1420. isn't it?

1421. It's like, but if you do that,

  1422. what will they say?

1423. How will they respond to that?

1424. How will that go over with your

1425. boss and your employers and your

1426. other friends in the office?

1427. And now you're risking so much

  1428. here.

1429. It's this immediate future we can

1430. get scared off by but we also,

1431. if we look out beyond, I mean,

1432. what is to come of us in the next

1433. five or ten or fifteen years?

1434. Does any of us really know?

1435. Maybe things will start looking

1436. up, but it might be just as

1437. reasonable to expect things are

  1438. getting worse.

1439. And if we focus out there on the

1440. potential dangers that await us,

1441. we've been snared yet again.

1442. Jesus helps us, friends, in this

1443. text see where our focus must be,

  1444. on Him.

1445. He opens doors that no one can

  1446. shut.

1447. He grants salvation to enemies like

1448. you and me and wants to grant it to

1449. more and more and more.

1450. He uses the faithful church to

1451. glorify and exalt His name.

1452. He always has and He always will.

1453. Our eyes must be on Him if we are to

  1454. exalt Him.

1455. We cannot focus on the traps of

1456. inability or circumstances, present or

1457. future, because they will always throw

  1458. us off course.

1459. So let us fix our eyes on Jesus,

  1460. today and always.

1461. Brothers and sisters serving in King's

1462. place, you fix your eyes on Jesus.

  1463. You stand fast.

  1464. Stay the course.

  1465. Breakfast team,

  1466. same.

  1467. Stay the course.

  1468. Exalt Jesus.

  1469. For all of us,

1470. Mike has invited us to pray for 10 new

  1471. believers this year,

1472. that before the end of our ministry

  1473. year in June,

1474. we would have 10 new people in this

  1475. room with arms raised,

  1476. praising God.

1477. If we don't bear witness to Jesus,

  1478. how will that happen?

  1479. Teachers,

1480. you who are in what seems like hopeless

  1481. situations,

1482. do not focus on the circumstances.

1483. Fix your eyes on Jesus and press on.

  1484. Press on.

  1485. Friends,

1486. there's one last thing I want to share

  1487. with us.

  1488. It's found in verse 10.

1489. I've been really excited about this

  1490. all week.

  1491. It's both

  1492. convicting

  1493. and so encouraging.

  1494. John calls Jesus

  1495. the faithful witness

  1496. back in chapter 1.

  1497. And this text

  1498. is telling us today,

  1499. our text from Philadelphia,

1500. that we need to let Jesus

  1501. lead us.

1502. We need to let Jesus

  1503. define faithfulness

  1504. for us.

1505. If you look at verse 10,

  1506. this phrase,

  1507. my word about

  1508. patient endurance.

  1509. See that phrase there?

1510. If you're one that marks up your Bible,

1511. I'd invite you to circle the my

  1512. and draw an arrow

1513. in front of the word

  1514. patient endurance.

  1515. The my that Jesus

  1516. is talking about here

  1517. is not

  1518. you've kept my word.

  1519. The my that Jesus

  1520. is speaking about here

  1521. is about

  1522. his own

  1523. patient endurance.

  1524. Church of Philadelphia,

  1525. Jesus says,

  1526. you have kept

  1527. the word

  1528. about

  1529. my

  1530. endurance.

1531. That's how it should read.

  1532. Because you have kept

  1533. the word

  1534. about

  1535. my

  1536. patient endurance.

  1537. And in that,

  1538. we see the example

  1539. of our king,

  1540. don't we?

  1541. His patient

  1542. endurance

  1543. defines

  1544. how we

  1545. understand

  1546. our own

  1547. patient

  1548. endurance.

  1549. endurance.

  1550. Jesus'

  1551. patient

  1552. endurance,

  1553. perhaps,

  1554. we're,

  1555. we realize

  1556. this is unfortunate

  1557. because it's scary

  1558. as we start talking

  1559. about what

  1560. he's getting at,

  1561. but he was not

  1562. patiently enduring

  1563. like somebody

  1564. who prepares

  1565. to board up

  1566. their house

  1567. because the

  1568. hurricane's coming.

  1569. no one

  1570. would

  1571. think that

  1572. about Jesus

  1573. when we read

  1574. of his life.

  1575. This is not

  1576. an endurance

  1577. that says,

  1578. well,

  1579. let's hunker down,

  1580. just kind of

  1581. ride out

  1582. the storm.

  1583. Jesus'

  1584. patient

  1585. endurance

  1586. was a day

  1587. after day

  1588. after day

  1589. proclaiming

  1590. of the kingdom

  1591. of God.

  1592. See,

  1593. the

  1594. Philadelphian

  1595. church

  1596. keeping

  1597. the word

  1598. about his

  1599. faithful

  1600. endurance

  1601. is keeping

  1602. the gospel

  1603. of a suffering

  1604. crucified

  1605. Messiah.

  1606. You can't

  1607. keep that

  1608. to yourself

  1609. and be

  1610. faithfully

  1611. enduring

  1612. in light

  1613. of this

  1614. passage.

  1615. We can't.

  1616. The

  1617. faithful

  1618. endurance

  1619. of Jesus

  1620. is a

  1621. see,

  1622. we're

  1623. going up

  1624. to Jerusalem

  1625. kind of

  1626. patient

  1627. endurance.

  1628. We know

  1629. what happened

  1630. there.

  1631. Jesus says,

  1632. the Son of

  1633. Man will

  1634. be handed

  1635. over,

  1636. betrayed

  1637. into the

  1638. hands of

  1639. men,

  1640. mocked

  1641. and flogged

  1642. and crucified.

  1643. And then

  1644. three days

  1645. later,

  1646. he will

  1647. be raised.

  1648. His

  1649. patient

  1650. endurance

  1651. was a

  1652. life of

  1653. opposition

  1654. from the

  1655. world.

  1656. From the

  1657. synagogue

  1658. of Satan

  1659. on a

  1660. large

  1661. scale.

  1662. It's no

  1663. wonder,

  1664. right,

  1665. church,

  1666. that he

  1667. says to

  1668. his people

  1669. over and

  1670. over again

  1671. things like,

  1672. do not be

  1673. surprised if

  1674. the world

  1675. hates you,

  1676. hated me

  1677. first,

  1678. or a

  1679. servant is

  1680. not above

  1681. his master.

  1682. If they

  1683. persecute you,

  1684. it's only

  1685. because they've

  1686. persecuted me.

  1687. It's why the

  1688. Apostle Paul

  1689. understands suffering

  1690. so clearly

  1691. and can

  1692. say,

  1693. all who

  1694. desire to

  1695. live a

  1696. godly life

  1697. in Christ

  1698. Jesus will

  1699. be persecuted

  1700. because Jesus'

  1701. patient endurance

  1702. was to the

  1703. cross.

  1704. Friends,

  1705. we endure

  1706. patiently the

  1707. opposition of

  1708. the world by

  1709. exalting

  1710. Jesus in

  1711. spite of

  1712. inability,

  1713. opposition,

  1714. whether it's

  1715. current or

  1716. future.

  1717. not by

  1718. boarding

  1719. things up

  1720. and hunkering

  1721. down for

  1722. the storm.

  1723. This is not

  1724. a passive

  1725. patient

  1726. endurance.

  1727. This is an

  1728. advancing of

  1729. the kingdom

  1730. patient

  1731. endurance

  1732. met with

  1733. opposition at

  1734. every side.

  1735. Jesus

  1736. leaves us an

  1737. example and

  1738. then says,

  1739. if anyone

  1740. would come

  1741. after me,

  1742. let him

  1743. deny himself,

  1744. take up his

  1745. cross,

  1746. and follow

  1747. me.

  1748. That's our

  1749. example,

  1750. church.

  1751. The

  1752. faithful,

  1753. patient

  1754. endurance

  1755. of our

  1756. crucified

  1757. king.

  1758. And just

  1759. so we're

  1760. clear,

  1761. his example

  1762. is also

  1763. our

  1764. salvation.

  1765. salvation.

  1766. Jesus

  1767. patiently

  1768. endured the

  1769. cross,

  1770. despising

  1771. its shame

  1772. so that he

  1773. might win

  1774. sons and

  1775. daughters for

  1776. his father.

  1777. The innocent

  1778. dying for the

  1779. guilty so that

  1780. the guilty may

  1781. go free and

  1782. find the open

  1783. door into the

  1784. kingdom of

  1785. heaven forever

  1786. for them.

  1787. Sinners

  1788. deserving of

  1789. wrath,

  1790. welcomed into

  1791. the household

  1792. of God,

  1793. established as

  1794. pillars forever,

  1795. conquerors,

  1796. not because of

  1797. our merit,

  1798. but because of

  1799. Christ and

  1800. his grace

  1801. forever.

  1802. He is the

  1803. author and

  1804. perfecter of

  1805. our faith.

  1806. So church,

  1807. let us exalt

  1808. him in word

  1809. and deed until

  1810. the very,

  1811. very end.

  1812. let the one

  1813. who has an

  1814. ear hear what

  1815. the spirit

  1816. says to the

  1817. churches.

  1818. Amen.
