  1. Well, happy Thanksgiving to everybody.

  2. Oh, thank you.

  3. Hopefully your Thanksgiving holiday was full of good things and gratitude for those good things.

  4. It is sweet, it is good to gather around a full, abundant table together with our families and the people that we love, friends.

  5. And we obey the words of the old hymn to count our blessings, to count them one by one.

  6. It is right and good for us to do that.

  7. We are a joyfully indebted people.

  8. We are eternally in God's debt for his immense kindness to us in all things physical and eternal.

  9. But I think it is a little ironic that the day that we set aside to give God abundant thanks is also the day when, at least for most of us I am assuming, that our table is set with abundance.

  10. That we have a house that is prepared for a feast.

  11. We give God much thanks in the abundance when our lives are full and rich, when the sun is shining, when our mouths are full of good things, and as well we should.

  12. These are good gifts from God.

  13. Everything comes from him.

  14. But that is in November at the end of the harvest season.

  15. What about in the dead of winter?

  16. What about in January?

  17. When circumstances look bleak, when our table is bare, when we are feeling empty, when we are facing real difficulty and weakness, that's when the gratitude of November seems far away.

  18. Now, I'm not just speaking economically.

  19. I'm also speaking about seasons in our lives when they are particularly difficult.

  20. That can be in November or any other month.

  21. Now, I bet most of us this morning have some kind of hard situation on our minds.

  22. Maybe it's tension in a relationship.

  23. Maybe it's a delicate family situation.

  24. Perhaps finances are tight.

  25. Or you're grieving that someone dear to you has made some poor choices and is suffering for it.

  26. Maybe you have a body that's not working very well right now.

  27. Maybe there's a hard situation that you're facing at work.

  28. Or maybe it's just the daily grind of the particular season of life that God has you in right now.

  29. Maybe some of you are floating on cloud nine, but I imagine most of us are in some kind of season where some kind of hard circumstance is looking at us in the face.

  30. And it's hard to obey the command of Scripture that Mike mentioned in his prayer a little while ago to give thanks in all circumstances.

  31. It can be difficult when our life is impoverished, whether literally or figuratively, to give thanks to God.

  32. We need fresh perspective from God's Word to transform the way we relate to all of our circumstances, whether they are abounding or difficult.

  33. Whether it's on Thanksgiving Day or the other 364 days of the year.

  34. And so this morning in Philippians 4, if you're not already there in your Bibles, go ahead and open up there.

  35. We're going to receive some of that fresh perspective that we need from a precious letter written by the Apostle Paul to a Philippian body of believers in the church, the city of Philippi in Greece, 2,000-ish years ago.

  36. So turn with me to Philippians 4.

  37. And what we're going to find in Philippians 4 is a big idea.

  38. One main idea I want to just drive home this morning.

  39. And then we're going to explore kind of the different ways that that gets worked out in our lives.

  40. Here's the main idea we're going to see from Philippians 4.

  41. Having a joyful faith union with Jesus transforms the way we relate to our circumstances, good or bad.

  42. So think of this message as a mountain spring cascading down from the high Sierras.

  43. The source of that is that first part of that big idea.

  44. Having a joyful faith union with Jesus.

  45. That's the source.

  46. And then that source is going to split into three tributaries, three streams of ways in which that faith union with Jesus transforms the way we relate to our circumstances.

  47. So we're going to look at the source.

  48. Then we're going to see three streams coming off of that source of how that joyful faith union transforms the way that we relate to our circumstances.

  49. So first, let's dive in and let's look at the source.

  50. What is a joyful faith union with Jesus?

  51. When my wife Jessica and I were dating, once we got comfortable enough with each other that poking fun at each other wasn't dangerous, it wasn't going to cause a fight,

  52. she began to make fun of me because I kept using the word over and over again.

  53. And it was kind of like Princess Bride.

  54. I don't think that means what you think it means.

  55. I began to use the word essentially all the time.

  56. Or basically, one of those two.

  57. And she kept making fun of me for it.

  58. It was such a part, it was a regular feature of my speech.

  59. I don't know how it got worked in there, but I guess I thought I sounded smart when I kept using it.

  60. So I kept using that.

  61. It was a regular feature of my speech.

  62. Well, the Apostle Paul had a regular feature to his speech that he used all the time in his letters.

  63. It was so much a part of him that it just showed up in all of the letters he wrote.

  64. And it showed up in today's passage that Abby read for us a few moments ago.

  65. In Philippians 4, verses 10 through 20, Paul uses the Greek preposition in, sorry for throwing Greek out here,

    Philippians 4:10–20

  66. but it's basically the same as English, in.

  67. E-N, in English I-N.

  68. It's the Greek preposition in, three times in this passage in relationship to Jesus.

  69. Verse 10, our opening verse,

  70. I rejoiced in the Lord, referring to Jesus.

  71. I rejoiced in the Lord Jesus greatly that you revived your concern for me.

  72. So he's rejoicing in Jesus.

  73. That's one.

  74. The second is in verse 13.

  75. It's disguised, but it's there.

  76. In verse 13, very familiar verse to us.

  77. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

  78. That word through, although it's a very legitimate translation of the Greek preposition in,

  79. is hiding the Greek preposition in.

  80. So literally, if you read it in Greek,

  81. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.

  82. Through is a very legitimate translation,

  83. but it really comes home nice and powerfully when we read it,

  84. in him who strengthens me.

  85. I'll show that to us in a minute.

  86. The third time is in verse 19.

  87. My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

  88. So that little phrase, in the Lord, or in Christ Jesus, or in him, shows up all over Paul's letters.

  89. It's a regular feature of the way he writes.

  90. It's the world he lives in.

  91. He loves that little preposition in.

  92. And when he uses it, this is what he's trying to communicate.

  93. He's trying to convey something of the rich relational union that the believers have with Jesus.

  94. By faith.

  95. In fact, that little phrase, in Christ, is the number one way that the New Testament talks about Christians.

  96. The word Christian only shows up a couple of times in our Bibles.

  97. Not much.

  98. And then a few other times, the word believer, or follower, or disciple.

  99. Of course, that's used to describe Christians as well.

  100. But nothing compared to the amount of times that Paul especially,

  101. but other New Testament writers talk about Christians being in Christ.

  102. In him.

  103. Just for the sake of illustrating this, let's flip over to Ephesians 1.

  104. Ephesians is the book right to the left of Philippians.

  105. And I'm just going to read verses 3 through 14 of chapter 1 of Ephesians.

  106. I want you to follow along with me.

  107. If you're taking notes, take tally marks.

  108. And what I want you to do is I want you to listen for how many times Paul uses the phrase,

  109. in him, or in Christ, or with him, or in Jesus.

  110. Anything like that.

  111. Okay?

  112. We might get a few different counts.

  113. But keep track with me of how many times he is talking about us being in Christ.

  114. Here we go.

  115. Ephesians 1, 3 through 14.

  116. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  117. even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.

  118. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ,

  119. according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the beloved.

  120. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

  121. which he lavished on us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will,

  122. according to this purpose which he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time,

  123. to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

  124. In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

  125. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

  126. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him,

  127. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance,

  128. until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory.

  129. How many did you get?

  130. Just shout it out.

  131. 14?

  132. Anybody else?

  133. 11?

  134. That's a lot.

  135. That's amazing.

  136. Do you see how much Paul is thinking of this is who we are?

  137. We are in Christ.

  138. It's astounding.

  139. And dear friend, if you have come to realize how your sin is grievous in God's sight,

  140. and you are in need of forgiveness before God,

  141. and you've understood that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for your sin,

  142. and you've put all of your eggs of hope and confidence and trust and faith in his basket,

  143. then you are in him.

  144. You are united to him.

  145. Dead to sin as he died to sin.

  146. Alive to God as he is alive to God.

  147. Given new life in his spirit to have a present and real relationship with him.

  148. Just as a man and a woman are united together with an unbreakable vow of commitment and care and mutual love,

  149. so you have been united to Christ in a joyful faith union with him.

  150. And it can't be broken.

  151. And this changes everything if we look at life this way.

  152. So if this is true of you,

  153. then you are anchored to a rock that is so high and so strong

  154. that no wave of circumstance or chaos can penetrate and shake you.

  155. Just like in the Psalms when David's talking about being on a rock and he can't be moved,

  156. it's because he is established in faith on the rock of Jesus.

  157. That's what Paul is standing on in Philippians 4.

  158. He doesn't talk about it particularly in those terms,

  159. but that's the rock he's standing on,

  160. and that's the rock that he keeps referring to.

  161. He is rejoicing in the Lord about something.

  162. He's able to do all things in him who strengthens him,

  163. and he's confident of future provision because of being in Christ.

  164. So that is the source.

  165. That is the fountainhead of what we are looking at

  166. that's going to transform the way that we relate to our circumstances.

  167. Now, let's explore the three streams that this source splits into,

  168. three ways in which this joyful faith union with Jesus

  169. transforms the way we look at our circumstances.

  170. The first stream is this.

  171. Having a joyful faith union with Jesus

  172. teaches us contentment no matter what our circumstances are.

  173. Having a joyful faith union with Jesus teaches us contentment

  174. no matter what our circumstances are.

  175. Let's look at Philippians 4, verses 10 through 13 in a little more detail.

    Philippians 4:10–13

  176. Let me read them for us.

  177. I rejoiced in the Lord greatly now at length

  178. that you have revived your concern for me.

  179. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

  180. Not that I am speaking of being in need,

  181. for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.

  182. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound.

  183. In any and every circumstance,

  184. I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger,

  185. abundance and need.

  186. I can do all things in him who strengthens me.

  187. So Paul is at the very end of this letter

  188. that he's writing to his dear friends,

  189. the believers in Philippi,

  190. and he's coming to one of the primary reasons

  191. for which he wrote the letter,

  192. which is to thank them for a gift

  193. that they had sent to him through a messenger

  194. whose name was Epaphroditus.

  195. It shows up later on in the letter.

  196. We'll return to this gift that they give

  197. in the second point.

  198. We're going to take the gift that he just mentioned,

  199. being thankful for,

  200. and we're going to set that aside.

  201. We're coming back to that in the second point.

  202. Because right after his initial joy

  203. of the Philippians showing concern for him,

  204. he goes off on this tangent in verses 11 through 13.

  205. You can almost put parentheses around verses 11 through 13.

  206. There's just like an explanatory tangent,

  207. but it's a beautiful tangent.

  208. It's a wonderful tangent

  209. that provides a beautiful window

  210. into Paul's joyful faith union with Jesus

  211. and how it shapes the way he relates to his circumstances.

  212. So he knows the Philippians have been concerned about him.

  213. He's grateful for that,

  214. but he wants them to know

  215. that he hasn't been pining for a change of circumstance

  216. or wringing his hands,

  217. waiting for their gift to get here

  218. so he could say,

  219. about time this thing got here.

  220. Rather, look at verse 11.

  221. Not that I'm speaking of being in need.

  222. I have learned in whatever situation I am

  223. to be content.

  224. Paul's circumstances, by the way, are not good.

  225. He's in prison.

  226. He's experiencing hardship economically.

  227. He is limited in his mobility

  228. and his ability to work.

  229. He's probably exposed to disease.

  230. He is being slandered by some people.

  231. He's being abandoned by others.

  232. He is afflicted by inward weakness

  233. and outward temptation.

  234. And his death could be just around the corner.

  235. And so it's amazing that he tells the Philippians,

  236. in whatever situation I find myself,

  237. I have learned how to be content.

  238. And he elaborates this in verse 12.

  239. I know how to be brought low.

  240. I know how to abound.

  241. In any and in every circumstance,

  242. I have learned the secret of facing plenty in hunger,

  243. abundance in need.

  244. Did you notice all the education words

  245. that Paul is using?

  246. I have learned, in verse 11.

  247. I know how, in verse 12.

  248. At the end of verse 12,

  249. I have learned the secret.

  250. Paul has learned this contentment.

  251. It is a skill that he has acquired over the years.

  252. When I was in eighth grade,

  253. I was forced to take a keyboarding class

  254. to learn the skill of typing.

  255. Raise your hand if you were subjected

  256. to a similar kind of torture.

  257. Okay.

  258. It was on one of those MS-DOS computers

  259. with floppy disks to save your progress.

  260. If you are under the age of 25,

  261. turn to an older person next to you

  262. and ask them what in the world I just said.

  263. I'm not that old,

  264. but at least I can kind of have some bragging rights

  265. for being old by throwing MS-DOS around.

  266. Little did I know

  267. that those annoying, unnatural,

  268. repetitive exercises

  269. were teaching me

  270. a lifelong, incredibly valuable skill.

  271. I have often said

  272. that the most useful class

  273. I have ever taken

  274. was eighth grade keyboarding.

  275. And here is Paul

  276. near the end of his life

  277. saying,

  278. God, by his grace,

  279. enrolled me in the course

  280. of Christian Contentment 101.

  281. And I strove to be a good student.

  282. And I can say

  283. that I indeed have learned

  284. through a very difficult process

  285. a very valuable skill.

  286. How to be content

  287. in each and every circumstance

  288. in which I find myself.

  289. If I am amply supplied

  290. with all that I need,

  291. I'm content.

  292. I'm not fixated on the stuff that I have.

  293. And if I don't have enough,

  294. I'm still content.

  295. I'm not fixated on what I don't have.

  296. I don't know about you,

  297. but at this point,

  298. I want to be like,

  299. Paul,

  300. how?

  301. How have you learned this?

  302. I want to know

  303. because it doesn't matter

  304. what gets thrown at me.

  305. I inevitably struggle

  306. with discontentment.

  307. I complain

  308. about the stuff

  309. that God throws at me.

  310. So how did you learn this?

  311. It is so hard to learn this, Paul.

  312. How did you figure it out?

  313. Before we move to verse 13

  314. to find the answer,

  315. we have to define

  316. a very important word.

  317. It's the word that Paul uses

  318. for content

  319. back in verse 11.

  320. It was a word

  321. that the Philippians

  322. could have easily understood

  323. as meaning

  324. self-sufficient

  325. or dependent on

  326. no one or anything

  327. except my own inner resources.

  328. And this concept

  329. of self-sufficiency

  330. was the ideal

  331. of the Greek

  332. Stoic and Cynic philosophers

  333. of that age.

  334. The Stoics

  335. and the Cynics

  336. were pursuing

  337. this ultimate

  338. personal ideal

  339. of self-sufficiency.

  340. Basically,

  341. they wanted to be MacGyver.

  342. They wanted to have

  343. all the resources

  344. in themselves

  345. to do anything

  346. at any time

  347. in whatever situation.

  348. That's MacGyver.

  349. One writer

  350. describes this ideal

  351. like this.

  352. A man should be sufficient

  353. unto himself

  354. for all things

  355. and able

  356. by the power

  357. of his own will

  358. to resist

  359. the force

  360. of circumstances.

  361. But Paul

  362. takes that concept

  363. of self-sufficiency

  364. and whoop

  365. flips it on its head

  366. in verse 13.

  367. He uses the same word

  368. but he totally

  369. transforms the idea.

  370. Yes,

  371. Paul was able

  372. to resist

  373. the force

  374. of his circumstances

  375. but not by the power

  376. of his own will

  377. or his own inner resources

  378. but as he would say

  379. by being in

  380. the one

  381. who strengthens me.

  382. He was able

  383. to be content

  384. in every situation

  385. not because he was

  386. sufficient for himself

  387. but because he was

  388. united to Jesus

  389. by faith

  390. and Jesus was sufficient

  391. for every circumstance.

  392. In short,

  393. he was not self-sufficient,

  394. he was Christ-sufficient.

  395. Because the most important

  396. thing about Paul

  397. was that he united himself

  398. to Jesus by faith.

  399. And because he was

  400. in Jesus,

  401. he was secure,

  402. he was forgiven,

  403. he was adopted

  404. as God's child,

  405. he was redeemed,

  406. he was being made holy

  407. and he was being

  408. inwardly strengthened

  409. to delight in God

  410. regardless of his circumstances.

  411. Now let's turn this to us.

  412. What if

  413. each one

  414. of our circumstances

  415. was a gracious assignment

  416. from God,

  417. your patient

  418. and wise teacher

  419. in the course

  420. of Christian Contentment 101,

  421. an assignment

  422. in which he has

  423. purposed to teach you

  424. to find your sufficiency

  425. in Jesus,

  426. not in yourself,

  427. because you are

  428. in him.

  429. So dear friend,

  430. what current circumstance

  431. is most on your mind?

  432. Causing you concern,

  433. anxiety,

  434. fear,

  435. despair,

  436. frustration,

  437. how are you

  438. relating to it?

  439. Are you relating

  440. to it

  441. through self-sufficiency

  442. or through

  443. Jesus'

  444. sufficiency?

  445. Are you searching

  446. your own inner

  447. resources

  448. and exhausting

  449. your own will

  450. or are you

  451. finding your

  452. sufficiency

  453. in the one

  454. who strengthens you

  455. through your faith

  456. union with him?

  457. Last week,

  458. we saw in Revelation 4

  459. that God

  460. is never shaken.

  461. Like we sang

  462. just a few moments ago,

  463. he never changes.

  464. He is on his throne.

  465. As Jiwon mentioned earlier,

  466. there's no sea,

  467. there's no chaos

  468. in God's presence.

  469. No ups and downs

  470. of circumstances.

  471. He reigns

  472. over all.

  473. He is sufficient

  474. because he rules

  475. over every circumstance.

  476. And he has orchestrated

  477. your particular circumstances

  478. at this stage

  479. and at this season

  480. of your life

  481. to teach you

  482. that he is sufficient

  483. for you

  484. so that you can find

  485. your full contentment

  486. in every situation

  487. in him.

  488. So that's our first

  489. stream.

  490. We have our life

  491. joyfully united

  492. to him by faith

  493. and that transforms

  494. the way that we relate

  495. to our circumstances

  496. because we can find

  497. contentment

  498. in any circumstance.

  499. There's another way

  500. that it transforms

  501. the way we relate

  502. to our circumstances

  503. and it's this.

  504. Having a joyful

  505. faith union with Jesus

  506. produces gratitude

  507. for things unrelated

  508. to our circumstances.

  509. Having a joyful

  510. faith union with Jesus

  511. produces gratitude

  512. for things unrelated

  513. to our circumstances.

  514. Let's look at

  515. verses 14 through 20.

  516. Yet it was kind of you

  517. to share my trouble.

  518. And you Philippians

  519. yourselves know

  520. that in the beginning

  521. of the gospel

  522. when I left Macedonia

  523. no church entered

  524. into partnership

  525. with me in giving

  526. and receiving

  527. except you only.

  528. Even in Thessalonica

  529. you sent me help

  530. for my needs

  531. once and again.

  532. Not that I seek

  533. the gift

  534. but I seek the fruit

  535. that increases

  536. to your credit.

  537. I have received

  538. full payment

  539. and more.

  540. I am well supplied

  541. having received

  542. from Epaphroditus

  543. the gifts you sent.

  544. A fragrant offering,

  545. a sacrifice acceptable

  546. and pleasing

  547. to God.

  548. Remember the whole

  549. last portion

  550. of this letter

  551. is Paul's way

  552. of expressing

  553. his gratitude

  554. to the believers

  555. in Philippi

  556. because they had

  557. given him a gift

  558. through a mutual friend

  559. to Epaphroditus.

  560. They had no doubt

  561. heard he was in prison.

  562. They wanted to express

  563. their support for him

  564. and so they sent him

  565. a gift.

  566. This was probably

  567. a financial gift

  568. and they were trying

  569. to give him money

  570. to buy food

  571. and clothing

  572. while he was in prison.

  573. In today's prison system

  574. it is financially

  575. supported by the state

  576. through taxpayer dollars

  577. to provide food

  578. and clothing

  579. and shelter

  580. for prisoners.

  581. But Paul's prison experience

  582. in Rome

  583. was not.

  584. It included a room

  585. but not board.

  586. A prisoner's family

  587. and friends

  588. were responsible

  589. for supplying

  590. all the food

  591. and clothing

  592. that a prisoner

  593. needed

  594. while he was incarcerated.

  595. So you and I

  596. might expect

  597. that Paul's reaction

  598. might be something like

  599. man, guys

  600. thank you.

  601. If you had not

  602. sent your gift

  603. when you did

  604. I was running out

  605. of bread.

  606. So thank you.

  607. I could see how

  608. God totally provided

  609. for my daily needs

  610. through your kind gift.

  611. But he doesn't mention that.

  612. He doesn't go there.

  613. He's just not

  614. thinking about himself.

  615. He's finding

  616. all of his identity

  617. and all of his thought

  618. and all of his concern

  619. in different priorities

  620. than his own

  621. self-priorities.

  622. He certainly expresses

  623. joy in their concern

  624. for him

  625. but not because of

  626. how their concern

  627. for him benefited him

  628. but rather

  629. how it benefited

  630. them

  631. and then glorify God.

  632. So verses 14 through 16

  633. Paul goes above

  634. and beyond

  635. to remind the Philippians

  636. of their active participation

  637. in his ministry

  638. ever since he had known them.

  639. They've been active supporters

  640. of Paul

  641. ever since he planted

  642. their church.

  643. They had generously

  644. contributed

  645. to his gospel ministry

  646. in other cities

  647. around their region

  648. and even when he was

  649. as far away

  650. as Rome.

  651. And so you can tell

  652. there's this warm

  653. affectionate partnership

  654. between the apostle

  655. and this group

  656. of believers

  657. but look at verse 17.

  658. This is where he clarifies

  659. why he's rejoicing

  660. in the Lord

  661. in verse 10.

  662. Not that I seek the gift

  663. I seek the fruit

  664. that increases

  665. to your credit.

  666. The word fruit

  667. was a common way

  668. of referring

  669. to compounded interest

  670. that accrued

  671. to the benefit

  672. of an account holder.

  673. So if you got

  674. a savings account

  675. the more that you invest

  676. in that account

  677. then the greater

  678. your yield of interest

  679. from the bank.

  680. In other words

  681. the greater your fruit.

  682. Paul was rejoicing

  683. not because

  684. his circumstances

  685. changed

  686. but because

  687. the Philippians

  688. were investing

  689. more and more

  690. in the right account

  691. and it would produce

  692. a generous spiritual yield

  693. for their benefit

  694. both in this life

  695. and for eternity.

  696. Now

  697. just for clarity's sake

  698. he's not saying

  699. that their generosity

  700. is kind of

  701. helping them

  702. climb some ladder

  703. of spiritual performance

  704. and get good points

  705. in return.

  706. That's legalism.

  707. That's not what

  708. Paul's talking about.

  709. Rather

  710. this is

  711. what Paul had been

  712. praying for

  713. back in chapter 1

  714. of verse Philippians.

  715. In Philippians 1

    Philippians 1:9–11

  716. verses 9 through 11

  717. he prays

  718. I have been praying

  719. that you would be

  720. filled with the fruit

  721. of righteousness

  722. that comes through

  723. Jesus Christ.

  724. So Paul wants

  725. these believers

  726. to be connected

  727. to Jesus

  728. in such a way

  729. that they are

  730. thriving and flourishing

  731. through their faith union

  732. with him

  733. and part of that flourishing

  734. is a costly concern

  735. for the needs

  736. of others.

  737. They are bearing fruit

  738. and God

  739. takes notice of that

  740. and he rewards it

  741. in a form of

  742. either a present blessing

  743. favor

  744. or a future reward

  745. in eternity.

  746. So Epaphroditus

  747. walks in Paul's

  748. prison cell

  749. hands him the gift

  750. and Paul's jumping

  751. up and down

  752. for joy

  753. and he's like

  754. yes!

  755. But it's not because

  756. he changes circumstances.

  757. It's because

  758. their motives are right.

  759. It's because

  760. their hearts

  761. are in the right place.

  762. It's because

  763. they're giving generously.

  764. They're still

  765. focused on Jesus.

  766. They're still connected

  767. to him.

  768. This is going to be

  769. so good for them.

  770. Had the money

  771. gone to some other

  772. preacher

  773. in some other cell

  774. he would have been

  775. just as happy.

  776. He gives thanks

  777. for something

  778. completely unrelated

  779. to his circumstances

  780. because he has

  781. a joyful faith union

  782. with Jesus

  783. and that has changed

  784. his values

  785. and his priorities.

  786. In verse 18

  787. Paul shifts

  788. attention to himself

  789. just long enough

  790. to assure the Philippians

  791. that his needs

  792. are fully met

  793. through their generous gift

  794. and then he gets his eyes

  795. back off himself again

  796. and he starts rejoicing

  797. because not only

  798. is their generosity

  799. accruing spiritual benefit

  800. for them in God's eyes

  801. but is a precious

  802. and pleasing act

  803. of worship

  804. to God.

  805. Look at the end

  806. of verse 18.

  807. He calls their gift

  808. a fragrant offering

  809. a sacrifice acceptable

  810. and pleasing

  811. to God.

  812. Paul is jumping

  813. up and down

  814. for joy

  815. not only because

  816. the Philippians

  817. would reap

  818. spiritual benefit

  819. from their generosity

  820. but because it glorified God

  821. and their generosity

  822. pleased God.

  823. He was giving thanks

  824. not because

  825. the circumstances changed

  826. but because the Philippians

  827. were honoring God.

  828. If your family

  829. is like mine

  830. you probably

  831. sat around

  832. a Thanksgiving table

  833. on Thursday

  834. and I'm guessing

  835. that we were

  836. similarly grateful

  837. for particular things.

  838. Things that were related

  839. to our circumstances.

  840. Health.

  841. A roof over our heads.

  842. Vehicles.

  843. Money in our bank account.

  844. Food in the refrigerator.

  845. Food on the table.

  846. Family and friends.

  847. And these are

  848. circumstantial kindnesses

  849. of God

  850. and we ought to give

  851. thanks for them.

  852. However,

  853. if my faith union

  854. with Jesus

  855. is the most important

  856. thing about me

  857. then these

  858. circumstantial things

  859. shouldn't be

  860. the only things

  861. I should be giving

  862. thanks for.

  863. when Jesus

  864. is the center

  865. of my life

  866. and we are

  867. joyfully united

  868. with him

  869. by faith

  870. we don't

  871. only give thanks

  872. for the things

  873. that immediately

  874. affect us

  875. in our circumstances

  876. we also give thanks

  877. for a whole new

  878. set of spiritual

  879. realities

  880. that matter to us

  881. because they matter

  882. to Jesus

  883. the one we're

  884. connected to.

  885. So do you give thanks

  886. for what Jesus

  887. give thanks for?

  888. If you are

  889. intimately connected

  890. to Jesus

  891. by faith

  892. if he's the center

  893. of your life

  894. then his priorities

  895. are your priorities

  896. just like Paul's

  897. priorities

  898. were not focused

  899. on his circumstances

  900. but on greater

  901. spiritual realities.

  902. The things that

  903. he values

  904. we ought to value.

  905. The things that

  906. Jesus delights in

  907. we ought to delight in.

  908. So in this passage

  909. there are at least

  910. two things that we

  911. can see through

  912. Paul's

  913. Jesus centered

  914. lenses

  915. that we can give

  916. thanks for

  917. and rejoice in

  918. even though they

  919. don't immediately

  920. affect us

  921. or our circumstances.

  922. It's when others

  923. are spiritually growing

  924. and thriving

  925. and when God

  926. is honored

  927. through the spiritual

  928. fruit bearing

  929. of others.

  930. So that means

  931. that I should be

  932. giving thanks

  933. not only for

  934. God's work in my life

  935. which affect me

  936. but when I see

  937. evidence of God

  938. at work

  939. in the heart

  940. of someone

  941. in my life group

  942. because they're

  943. learning how to be

  944. content with a

  945. hard circumstance

  946. because they're

  947. making God

  948. their sufficiency.

  949. Or I should be

  950. giving thanks

  951. when it appears

  952. that God is

  953. softening my

  954. neighbor's heart

  955. to the gospel.

  956. I should be

  957. giving thanks

  958. when I hear

  959. someone talk

  960. about how God

  961. is exposing

  962. sin in their life

  963. and teaching them

  964. to put it to death

  965. and trust in Jesus

  966. more fully.

  967. I should be

  968. rejoicing when I

  969. look at the bulletin

  970. and I see last week's

  971. offering amount

  972. not because it was

  973. higher than last week

  974. and then we want

  975. to have a good

  976. bank account

  977. for our church

  978. but because

  979. of the fruit

  980. of generosity

  981. that is overflowing

  982. in our church

  983. that is pleasing

  984. to God

  985. and it's for our

  986. spiritual benefit.

  987. So we should

  988. give thanks

  989. for these realities

  990. because they matter

  991. to Jesus.

  992. Our circumstances

  993. matter to Jesus too

  994. obviously

  995. but this is

  996. opening our eyes

  997. to a whole new

  998. realm of things

  999. to be grateful for

  1000. because our life

  1001. is connected

  1002. to him.

  1003. There's one last

  1004. thing in this passage

  1005. in verses 19 and 20

  1006. one more stream

  1007. in which our

  1008. joyful faith union

  1009. with Jesus

  1010. transforms the way

  1011. we relate to our

  1012. circumstances.

  1013. We've seen that it

  1014. teaches us contentment

  1015. no matter what our

  1016. circumstances are

  1017. that it teaches us

  1018. gratitude

  1019. for things that are

  1020. unrelated to our

  1021. circumstances

  1022. and lastly

  1023. this

  1024. having a joyful

  1025. faith union with

  1026. Jesus makes us

  1027. confident

  1028. that God will

  1029. provide

  1030. for us

  1031. for our needs

  1032. in the middle

  1033. of our circumstances.

  1034. Having a joyful

  1035. faith union with

  1036. Jesus makes us

  1037. confident that God

  1038. will provide for us

  1039. for our needs

  1040. in the middle

  1041. of our circumstances.

  1042. Let's end

  1043. this sermon

  1044. where Paul ends

  1045. his letter

  1046. verses 19 to 20.

  1047. And my God

  1048. will supply

  1049. every need of yours

  1050. according to his

  1051. riches in glory

  1052. in Christ Jesus

  1053. to our God and

  1054. Father be glory

  1055. forever and ever.

  1056. Amen.

  1057. This is wonderfully

  1058. short and sweet.

  1059. Paul is rejoicing

  1060. in Christ

  1061. because the

  1062. Philippians were

  1063. flourishing in

  1064. Christ by bearing

  1065. fruit of godly

  1066. generosity and

  1067. concern for

  1068. others.

  1069. And because of

  1070. their faithful

  1071. fruit bearing in

  1072. Christ,

  1073. Paul has no doubt

  1074. that God will be

  1075. faithful to supply

  1076. all of their needs

  1077. just as they had

  1078. supplied for his.

  1079. again, the

  1080. Philippians hadn't

  1081. earned some

  1082. benefit here.

  1083. Rather, Paul is

  1084. promising that God

  1085. takes notice

  1086. of the needs of

  1087. those who are in

  1088. his son,

  1089. Jesus,

  1090. and the Philippians

  1091. have shown the

  1092. proof that they

  1093. are in his son

  1094. by showing concern

  1095. for Paul in the

  1096. middle of his need.

1097. So if we are in

  1098. Christ, if we are

  1099. united to him

  1100. by faith,

  1101. then all the riches

  1102. of God's glory

  1103. are ours in

  1104. Christ.

  1105. So if our

  1106. circumstances seem

  1107. perilous, dark,

  1108. empty, hopeless,

  1109. like Paul's did,

  1110. then we must not

  1111. forget that God

  1112. is abundantly able

  1113. and eager to

  1114. supply what we

  1115. need.

  1116. He's loaded,

  1117. as Pastor Mike

  1118. likes to say.

  1119. Remember Revelation

  1120. 4 from last week?

  1121. Our God sits

  1122. enthroned in

  1123. might and

  1124. power and

  1125. glory.

  1126. He's totally

  1127. unmoved by

  1128. chaos or

  1129. circumstances,

  1130. and he loves

  1131. his people.

  1132. His power is

  1133. funneled and

  1134. channeled toward

  1135. those who are

  1136. in Christ,

  1137. and it's this

  1138. power not for

  1139. bad, for good.

  1140. And notice what

  1141. Paul calls God

  1142. in verse 20.

  1143. are God and

  1144. Father.

  1145. If you are

  1146. joyfully united

  1147. by faith to

  1148. Jesus, God is

  1149. your adoptive

  1150. Father.

  1151. He has placed

  1152. the spirit of

  1153. his Son in

  1154. you, calling

  1155. out from the

  1156. depths of your

  1157. being, Abba,

  1158. Father.

  1159. He has united

  1160. you to Jesus

  1161. in such a way

  1162. that you call

  1163. out to the

  1164. same Father,

  1165. and your

  1166. Father answers

  1167. because you are

  1168. in his Son.

  1169. So dear

  1170. brother, dear

  1171. sister, if you

  1172. are in need

  1173. in the middle

  1174. of your

  1175. circumstances,

  1176. and who of us

  1177. isn't,

  1178. this promise is

  1179. so delightful.

  1180. Your Father has

  1181. glorious riches,

  1182. and you have

  1183. intimate access

  1184. to him

  1185. because you are

  1186. in his Son.

  1187. and he delights

  1188. to provide what

  1189. we need in the

  1190. middle of our

  1191. circumstances because

  1192. he gets great

  1193. glory in caring

  1194. for and providing

  1195. for those who

  1196. are in Jesus.

  1197. So dear brother,

  1198. dear sister,

  1199. if you are in

  1200. Christ, then you

  1201. are able to

  1202. daily, moment

  1203. by moment,

  1204. draw joy and

  1205. strength from the

  1206. source of your

  1207. mountain stream.

  1208. Your faith union

  1209. with the

  1210. all-sufficient

  1211. one who never

  1212. changes, who

  1213. gave himself for

  1214. you, who makes

  1215. us content in all

  1216. kinds of

  1217. circumstances, who

  1218. enables us to get

  1219. our eyes off of

  1220. ourselves and on

  1221. our circumstances and

  1222. on things that are

  1223. important to him and

  1224. his kingdom, and who

1225. is able to supply all

1226. of our needs in the

  1227. middle of our

  1228. circumstances.

  1229. You have access

  1230. now to rejoice in

  1231. your union with

  1232. him.

  1233. So if you find

  1234. yourself tempted

  1235. toward discontentment

  1236. where you are, or

  1237. towards living in a

  1238. self-absorbed way, or

  1239. towards despairing and

  1240. doubting whether your

  1241. daily needs will be

  1242. provided for, then

1243. jump in the stream and

  1244. swim up to the

  1245. source.

  1246. Drink deeply of your

  1247. faith union with him.

  1248. spend some time

  1249. contemplating what we

  1250. just read in Ephesians

  1251. 1, that sample

1252. passage I read for us

  1253. earlier, of all the

  1254. benefit, every spiritual

  1255. blessing, ours in

  1256. Christ.

1257. Ask him to teach you

  1258. contentment, to help

1259. you to give thanks for

1260. what he gives thanks for,

  1261. to make you more

  1262. confident in his

  1263. ability to supply all

  1264. of your needs according

  1265. to his glorious riches

  1266. in Christ.

  1267. In just a moment, I'm

  1268. going to pray.

1269. And what I want to

1270. encourage you to do is

  1271. spend a few moments

  1272. engaging with your

  1273. all-sufficient one.

  1274. Engage with your God.

1275. Ask for greater joy in

  1276. your union with Jesus,

1277. that he may transform the

  1278. way that you are

  1279. relating to your

  1280. circumstances right here

  1281. and now.

1282. And if you're here this

  1283. morning and you don't

  1284. know Jesus in this

  1285. way, you're aware that

  1286. you don't have a faith

1287. union with him in this

  1288. way that we've been

  1289. talking about, then turn

  1290. to him in faith.

1291. Ask him to open your

  1292. eyes to the glorious

1293. riches of being in Jesus.

  1294. Let's pray together.

  1295. Amen.

1296. Oh God, we need your

  1297. help.

1298. We are a people that

  1299. are quick to

  1300. discontentment, to

  1301. grumbling, to

  1302. complaining.

1303. We tend to have our

  1304. eyes fixed only on

  1305. ourselves and our

  1306. circumstances.

  1307. We tend to be

  1308. faithless and we need

  1309. your help.

1310. So we come to you,

  1311. God, all-sufficient

  1312. one who never changes.

1313. Would you show us the

1314. joy of being united to

  1315. your son?

  1316. And may that transform

1317. the way that we see

  1318. our circumstances.

1319. Help us to live by

  1320. faith in him.

  1321. In Christ's name,

  1322. amen.
