  1. Well, when our country was in its infancy, the most powerful man in the land had an extremely important decision to make.

  2. General George Washington had been given almost the powers of a dictator while he was the commander of the Continental Army.

  3. He could do basically anything he wanted with his power in order to defeat the British and win the war.

  4. But now that the war was over, the question before him was whether he would stay in power or lay down his sword.

  5. He had the hearts of his countrymen, of his soldiers, and of the Congress.

  6. He could have easily marched into Philadelphia, tell the Continental Congress that he desired to remain in power as a conquering king at the head of a victorious army.

  7. And he would have been warmly received, because that's all that our country knew.

  8. Ruled by a king, by one man.

  9. He would have been crowned king of a new monarchy, the American kingdom.

  10. But surprisingly, he marched into Philadelphia, all right, but he declared his mission accomplished, unbuckled his belt, and set his sword on the table, and walked back to civilian life.

  11. George Washington exercised his might in a very surprising way, because he knew it was in the best interest of his people.

  12. They didn't need another dictator.

  13. They needed a stable form of democratic government for the American people at the time.

  14. He exercised his might in a very surprising way.

  15. And this morning, it's our privilege to explore how the mightiest person, in the mightiest position of all, exercised his might in a very surprising way for the good of his people.

  16. Throughout the whole testimony of this book, scripture, and particularly in our passage today,

  17. we cannot help but see that God exercises his might in surprising ways to deliver his people.

  18. God exercises his power in surprising ways to deliver his people.

  19. So we're going to start in Isaiah 9 to see this.

  20. And there we're going to see the first of four Ps that will guide us through our time together today.

  21. We're going to first see God's surprising promise in our passage for today.

  22. We'll proceed there to see how that promise is based on a surprising pattern.

  23. We'll see how that all points to a very surprising person and a very surprising plan.

  24. So four Ps.

  25. Let's start with a surprising promise.

  26. In our passage for today, Isaiah the prophet foretells that God is going to deliver his people yet again.

  27. Last week, Pastor Mike introduced us to what was going on in Isaiah's day.

  28. Several generations after Israel's great King David died, who was the first monarch that God put over his people,

  29. God's people were consistently choosing to trust other nations and their own wisdom instead of depending upon God and his word.

  30. They were choosing darkness over light.

  31. They were becoming blind and stubborn, insisting on delivering themselves through their own strength or wisdom.

  32. And judgment was on its way in the form of foreign armies to come and conquer them.

  33. This is the note that chapter 8 ends on in verse 22.

  34. They will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish.

  35. They will be thrust into thick darkness.

  36. And yet, chapter 9, we see, unlooked for, surprisingly, on the other side of the gloom of judgment, God is promising light.

  37. In verse 1 of chapter 9, the very epicenter of the gloom and the darkness, which was the northern region of Galilee,

  38. where the Assyrian hordes were going to first invade, God is saying that light is going to dawn there.

  39. In verses 3 through 5, Isaiah tells us that the dawning light would produce an expansive joy for God's people,

  40. and that light would mean deliverance from bondage, victory over enemies,

  41. and an end to the warfare and the conflict that was coming because of their sin against God.

  42. And we see that this light that produces joy because of this deliverance and this great victory is all centered on one person.

  43. Let's look at verse 6.

  44. This whole work of gracious rescue and light would center upon this one ruler.

  45. Last week, Pastor Mike unpacked the beauty of that first phrase, wonderful counselor,

  46. one who has supernatural insight, miraculous wisdom that is going to deliver God's people.

  47. And today, I have the opportunity to unpack that word, that term, mighty God.

  48. We're going to focus in on that particularly this morning.

  49. So, what is so surprising about this promise of a ruler who is to be called mighty God?

  50. Well, that word mighty shows up all through your Bible in different ways.

  51. It's the Hebrew word gabor.

  52. Everybody say it with me.

  53. Gabor.

  54. Nice.

  55. Turn to your neighbor.

  56. Tell them they're looking mighty gabor this morning.

  57. Looking mighty, mighty.

  58. Gabor is a synonym for other words in the Bible like strength, power, greatness.

  59. But interestingly enough, the majority of the times gabor is used in the Bible, it's referring to warriors.

  60. Mighty men of battle.

  61. David, the great warrior king, the anointed ruler of God's people, was called a gabor in 1 Samuel 16

  62. when God tells Samuel to anoint David as king over God's people even though he was basically the runt of his family.

  63. And the very next chapter, 1 Samuel 17, this little runt gabor defeats the giant gabor, Goliath, the gabor of God's enemies.

  64. But God himself is also called a gabor.

  65. Great, mighty warrior, awesome God.

  66. Later on in Isaiah 42 and Isaiah 49, God is described as rising up like a mighty warrior

  67. to bring his people back from captivity in Babylon, laying waste to mountains, drawing up rivers in order to lead his people home.

  68. God has the might of a great warrior to deliver his people.

  69. And here we see, in verse 6, this future ruler of God's people,

  70. who's going to bring light and joy and deliverance to God's people,

  71. we see is called a gabor.

  72. A mighty warrior who will bring joyful, triumphant deliverance to God's people walking in darkness.

  73. But not just a gabor.

  74. He is mighty. He is a warrior.

  75. But he's not merely a warrior.

  76. His name is to be called Mighty God.

  77. I just can't help but wonder about what was going on in Isaiah the prophet's mind

  78. when he took his quill or whatever he was using,

  79. and he wrote that phrase.

  80. Mighty God.

  81. Isaiah was a faithful worshiper of the one true God, Yahweh.

  82. And Isaiah knew there was no God but Yahweh.

  83. He was passionately monotheistic.

  84. He only worshipped one God.

  85. And he knew that this one God does not share his glory with another.

  86. And yet, carried along by the Spirit of God,

  87. Isaiah is unmistakably calling this future ruler of Israel the mighty God.

  88. There's just no other way to interpret that phrase.

  89. This coming king will share God's very name, his very character, and his very nature as God.

  90. But here's where we come to the jaw-dropping surprise of this promise.

  91. This future ruler who is to be called Mighty God,

  92. through whom God would accomplish such a mighty deliverance of his people,

  93. is also human.

  94. He has to be.

  95. Look at the beginning of verse 6.

  96. To us, a child is born.

  97. To us, a son is given.

  98. In God's passionate and zealous love for this people in darkness,

  99. God is going to accomplish this great work of deliverance by being birthed.

  100. God is going to be birthed and not cease being God.

  101. The surprising wonder of it is twofold.

  102. First, this human ruler is unashamedly and directly referred to as God himself.

  103. But secondly, this mighty warrior,

  104. who will single-handedly bring light to those in darkness,

  105. and joy to the despairing,

  106. and lift the burdens of slavery off the shoulders,

  107. is coming,

  108. not as a conquering soldier,

  109. but as a child,

  110. an infant.

  111. This is the plain and simple reading of this God-breathed text.

  112. We just can't get beyond the fact that he is called Mighty Warrior God,

  113. and he is yet a human child.

  114. What a surprising promise.

  115. But if we're reading our Old Testaments well,

  116. it shouldn't be too surprising.

  117. Here's where we get to our second P.

  118. This promise is surprising, yes,

  119. but it's also based on a surprising pattern.

  120. A surprising pattern.

  121. I always enjoy stories that have flashbacks.

  122. Right now I'm reading Prince Caspian from the Chronicles of Narnia to my older kids,

  123. and we just finished reading Trumpkin the Dwarf,

  124. giving a long flashback explanation to the Pevensey kids

  125. about what had happened in the several hundred years

  126. since they had last visited Narnia.

  127. So let's take a moment,

  128. and let's do a little flashback.

  129. Let's do a flashback on the summary of the Old Testament story so far,

  130. up to Isaiah's day.

  131. God has often exercised his might in surprising ways.

  132. He has consistently showed his might through human weakness

  133. and through hopeless situations,

  134. so that it was extremely clear who exactly was responsible for delivering his people.

  135. Remember Abraham.

  136. Old dude with an old wife,

  137. 100 years old and 90 years old respectively,

  138. and God's entire plan to redeem humanity

  139. was totally dependent on this 90-year-old woman

  140. conceiving a child in a 90-year-old body

  141. when she couldn't even conceive when she was 20

  142. because she was barren.

  143. Just to make sure that it was crystal clear

  144. that God would bring about life out of death

  145. in a hopeless situation and through human weakness.

  146. Jump ahead to the Red Sea Rescue, Exodus 14.

  147. God gets his people out of slavery in Egypt,

  148. and he leads them straight into what seems like a trap.

  149. There's water in front of them, enemies behind them,

  150. and they have nowhere to go.

  151. And they start freaking out.

  152. They start blaming God, saying,

  153. why did you get us out of Egypt

  154. when we're going to die here on the shores of the Red Sea?

  155. And Moses tells his people,

  156. just stop and stand back and watch God fight for you.

  157. And then what seems like a major blunder on God's part

  158. by leading his people into this weak and vulnerable position

  159. turns out to be God the cunning warrior

  160. leading his arrogant adversary into a trap

  161. without Israel having to lift a finger.

  162. God got the glory.

  163. Through human weakness and hopeless situations.

  164. Or think about the Battle of Jericho.

  165. Joshua chapter 6, which wasn't much of a battle, right?

    Joshua 6 chapter mention

  166. There was some marching in circles

  167. by some circumcision sore warriors,

  168. some shouting, some horn blowing,

  169. and God the warrior gets the glory,

  170. and his people didn't have to do really anything

  171. except just trust him.

  172. Last week, Pastor Mike mentioned Gideon's defeat of the Midianites

  173. in Judges chapter 7.

    Judges 7 chapter mention

  174. God whittles Gideon's army down to less than 1% of its original size,

  175. 300 out of an original 32,000.

  176. And they defeat an innumerable horde of enemies

  177. just by blowing trumpets and smashing pottery.

  178. God gets the glory.

  179. God gets the glory when human weakness is on display

  180. and his mighty strength is on display.

  181. We could mention David's defeat of Goliath,

  182. Elijah's soaking wet altar on Mount Carmel,

  183. or what's coming up in Isaiah chapter 37 through 38,

    Isaiah 37 chapter mention

  184. sorry, 36 to 37.

  185. The Assyrian army, 200,000 strong nearly,

  186. is camped on Jerusalem's doorstep,

  187. and a single angel warrior slays them all on a night.

  188. God uses human weakness and hopeless situations

  189. to demonstrate that he and he alone

  190. is responsible for rescuing his people

  191. and getting glory over his enemies.

  192. So the surprising promise of a mighty God ruler

  193. who is a human child is really not that surprising.

  194. It's based on a surprising pattern

  195. that God has shown ever since the beginning.

  196. Now, let's return to Isaiah.

  197. Let's look at our third P,

  198. and let's turn our attention to the surprising person

  199. who was promised in Isaiah chapter nine

  200. and see how Isaiah continues to speak about him

  201. and who he turns out to be.

  202. So third P, a surprising person.

  203. Have you ever been at the grocery store

  204. and you saw someone that immediately you recognize,

  205. like, I know them,

  206. but you had to think pretty hard to remember

  207. how you knew them

  208. and where you knew them from

  209. because you just weren't used to seeing them

  210. in that context?

  211. I was at the store with my son the other day

  212. and I ran into a former co-worker of mine

  213. and my brain had to work really hard

  214. for a few seconds to,

  215. like, oh yeah, that's who she is.

  216. So I wasn't used to seeing her there.

  217. That same phenomenon happens

  218. as we keep reading Isaiah.

  219. If we keep reading Isaiah with our eyes kind of peeled for,

  220. okay, so who's this person going to be?

  221. This child, this mighty God,

  222. this wonderful counselor,

  223. this Emmanuel.

  224. How else is Isaiah going to talk about this person?

  225. If we keep reading,

  226. what we keep,

  227. we see in chapter nine and chapter 11,

  228. this child is described with royal imagery,

  229. mighty imagery over and over again.

  230. He's the one who's going to sit on David's throne forever.

  231. He's the prince of peace.

  232. The increase of his government will never end.

  233. Flip to chapter 11 for just a second.

  234. There shall come forth,

  235. chapter 11, verse one,

  236. a shoot from the stump of Jesse,

  237. a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.

  238. The spirit of the Lord will rest upon him,

  239. a spirit of wisdom and understanding,

  240. the spirit of counsel and might.

  241. The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

  242. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

  243. He shall not judge by what his eyes see

  244. or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

  245. but with righteousness he shall judge the poor

  246. and decide with equity the meek of the earth.

  247. And listen to this, authority.

  248. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,

  249. with the breath of his lips.

  250. He shall kill the wicked.

  251. This child has authority.

  252. He has power given to him from on high.

  253. But once we hit chapter 40 in Isaiah,

  254. the language shifts.

  255. Flip with me to Isaiah chapter 42.

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  256. Isaiah 42.

  257. All this royal, kingly, mighty imagery

  258. that we see describing this future ruler

  259. then shifts from royal imagery

  260. into servant talk.

  261. Look at chapter 42 in Isaiah.

  262. Isaiah 42.

  263. Isaiah 42.

  264. Behold my servant,

  265. whom I uphold,

  266. my chosen,

  267. in whom my soul delights.

  268. I have put my spirit upon him.

  269. He will bring forth justice to the nations.

  270. He will not cry aloud

  271. or lift up his voice

  272. or make it heard in the street.

  273. A bruised reed,

  274. he will not break.

  275. A faintly burning wick,

  276. he will not quench.

  277. He will faithfully bring forth justice.

  278. He will not grow faint

  279. or be discouraged

  280. till he has established justice

  281. in the earth

  282. and the coastlands wait for his law.

  283. So there's,

  284. kind of like the person

  285. in the grocery store,

  286. there's a lot here

  287. that's familiar that we recognize.

  288. God approves of him.

  289. He delights in him.

  290. The Holy Spirit is on him.

  291. He will bring justice

  292. and righteousness in the earth.

  293. So we recognize him,

  294. but the setting,

  295. the language is different.

  296. The emphasis is different.

  297. There's not a lot of royal might.

  298. Instead, there's a lot of servant-like gentleness

  299. and humility.

  300. So is this the same person?

  301. Is Isaiah talking about somebody else?

  302. I thought we were looking for a mighty warrior,

  303. a conquering king to deliver his people.

  304. Why do we now hear about a servant?

  305. Well, that's the beautiful surprise

  306. about this person.

  307. As one author put it,

  308. the king will be the servant

  309. and the servant will be the king.

  310. So once we get to the Gospels

  311. and we hear a birth announcement

  312. on an angel's lips

  313. in Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  314. turn there with me,

  315. Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  316. we shouldn't be too surprised

  317. to hear this mingling

  318. of royal might

  319. and servant-like humility

  320. in the same person.

  321. Luke 2.

  322. Let's read verses 10

  323. through 12

  324. of Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  325. this announcement

  326. to the shepherds.

  327. And the angel said to them,

  328. Fear not,

  329. for behold,

  330. I bring you good news

  331. of great joy

  332. that will be

  333. for all the people.

  334. For unto you

  335. is born this day

  336. in the city of David

  337. a Savior

  338. who is Christ

  339. the Lord.

  340. And this will be

  341. a sign for you.

  342. You will find a baby

  343. wrapped in swaddling cloths

  344. and lying

  345. in a manger.

  346. Good news,

  347. great joy,

  348. a Savior

  349. in David's city,

  350. the Christ,

  351. the Messiah,

  352. the anointed ruler

  353. that was foretold,

  354. the Lord.

  355. Did you catch that?

  356. Christ the Lord.

  357. The Lord.

  358. But also a baby

  359. born,

  360. wrapped in swaddling cloths

  361. and lying

  362. in a feed trough.

  363. Do you hear

  364. the tension?

  365. Do you sense

  366. the paradox?

  367. Mighty God

  368. of boundless power

  369. and authority

  370. bundled up

  371. and weak,

  372. exposed to the elements

  373. in a stable

  374. born to poor peasants

  375. who are under the thumb

  376. of Roman rule.

  377. Don't let

  378. this sight

  379. pass you by

  380. without adoration

  381. bubbling up

  382. in your heart.

  383. Don't let

  384. this Christmas

  385. pass by

  386. without you

  387. being utterly

  388. astounded

  389. that the mighty

  390. God of endless

  391. days

  392. and limitless

  393. wisdom and authority

  394. gladly

  395. and willingly

  396. and humbly

  397. gave up his throne

  398. for a feed trough.

  399. If we cease

  400. to be amazed

  401. by the incarnation

  402. of the Son of God,

  403. then something

  404. is not right

  405. within us.

  406. Lesser things

  407. have claimed

  408. our devotion

  409. if we are not

  410. in awe

  411. at the sight

  412. of God

  413. incarnate

  414. humbling himself

  415. to the lowest

  416. state of vulnerability.

  417. All of history

  418. was building up

  419. to this point

  420. and all of history

  421. looks back

  422. to this point

  423. when the mighty

  424. God became

  425. a weak

  426. and helpless

  427. infant.

  428. Divinity

  429. and humanity

  430. forever fused

  431. in a baby.

  432. one very surprising

  433. person.

  434. What is keeping

  435. you from

  436. beholding

  437. this surprising

  438. person

  439. with wonder

  440. and awe?

  441. there is nothing

  442. else that God

  443. desires for you

  444. this Christmas

  445. season

  446. than to

  447. freshly behold

  448. the mighty

  449. God

  450. lying

  451. in an animal's

  452. feed trough.

  453. you have

  454. the ability

  455. and you have

  456. the responsibility

  457. to set

  458. everything else

  459. in its proper

  460. place

  461. in order that

  462. he might take

  463. the rightful

  464. place

  465. in your

  466. affections

  467. and your

  468. devotion.

  469. Oh come

  470. let us

  471. adore him.

  472. How can

  473. we not?

  474. What a

  475. surprising

  476. person.

  477. Lastly

  478. let's look

  479. at God's

  480. surprising

  481. plan.

  482. Let's go

  483. back to

  484. George Washington

  485. for a minute.

  486. Old

  487. George

  488. after his

  489. victory over

  490. the British

  491. he had some

  492. options.

  493. He had some

  494. options.

  495. How was he

  496. going to

  497. exercise his

  498. mighty

  499. authority?

  500. I like

  501. having

  502. options.

  503. I like

  504. driving up

  505. to McDonald's

  506. and I know

  507. I have

  508. thousands

  509. of combinations

  510. of possibilities

  511. of options.

  512. It's rather

  513. empowering.

  514. God

  515. had options.

  516. He had a

  517. rebellious

  518. people on

  519. his hand

  520. in the

  521. garden.

  522. He had

  523. options of

  524. how to

  525. exercise his

  526. might and

  527. deal with

  528. them.

  529. He could

  530. have rightfully

  531. and justly

  532. and gloriously

  533. for the sake

  534. of his own

  535. name been

  536. done with

  537. the human

  538. race.

  539. He could

  540. have destroyed

  541. Adam and

  542. Eve in

  543. their

  544. rebellion

  545. then and

  546. there.

  547. It was

  548. his divine

  549. right.

  550. He had

  551. told them

  552. on the

  553. day you

  554. eat of

  555. this tree

  556. you shall

  557. surely die

  558. but they

  559. did not.

  560. Instead

  561. he elected

  562. to delay

  563. judgment.

  564. He

  565. exercised

  566. his divine

  567. might

  568. surprisingly

  569. to show

  570. mercy.

  571. That was

  572. his plan.

  573. Judgment

  574. was delayed

  575. and he

  576. put into

  577. effect a

  578. very surprising

  579. plan to

  580. redeem his

  581. rebellious

  582. image bearers.

  583. Time and

  584. again throughout

  585. the Old

  586. Testament as

  587. we saw

  588. earlier the

  589. pattern was

  590. to graciously

  591. rescue an

  592. undeserving

  593. people by

  594. exercising his

  595. power through

  596. human weakness

  597. and hopeless

  598. situations to

  599. redeem his

  600. people.

  601. Turn with me

  602. back to

  603. Isaiah.

  604. This time we're

  605. going to

  606. chapter 53.

  607. Getting your

  608. exercise in

  609. the Bible

  610. today.

  611. Sword drills.

  612. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  613. chapter 53.

  614. As I read

  615. parts of this

  616. very familiar

  617. prophecy I

  618. want you to

  619. listen for

  620. the surprising

  621. mingling of

  622. mighty deliverance

  623. and utter

  624. human weakness

  625. in God's

  626. plan.

  627. This is the

  628. pinnacle,

  629. the climax

  630. of God's

  631. surprising plan

  632. to redeem

  633. his people.

  634. We'll start

  635. in chapter 52

  636. verse 13.

  637. Behold my

  638. servant shall

  639. act wisely.

  640. He shall be

  641. high and

  642. lifted up

  643. and he

  644. shall be

  645. exalted.

  646. As many

  647. were astonished

  648. at you,

  649. his appearance

  650. was so marred

  651. beyond human

  652. semblance and

  653. his form

  654. beyond that

  655. of the

  656. children of

  657. mankind.

  658. So he

  659. shall sprinkle

  660. many nations.

  661. Kings shall

  662. shut their

  663. mouths because

  664. of him.

  665. For that

  666. which has

  667. not been

  668. told them

  669. they see

  670. and that

  671. which they

  672. have not

  673. heard they

  674. understand.

  675. Who has

  676. believed what

  677. he has heard

  678. from us?

  679. To whom

  680. has the

  681. arm,

  682. the strength,

  683. the might

  684. of the

  685. Lord been

  686. revealed?

  687. For he

  688. grew up

  689. before him

  690. like a

  691. young plant,

  692. like a

  693. root out

  694. of dry

  695. ground.

  696. He had

  697. no form

  698. or majesty

  699. that we

  700. should look

  701. at him,

  702. no beauty

  703. that we

  704. should desire

  705. him.

  706. He was

  707. despised

  708. and rejected

  709. by men,

  710. a man of

  711. sorrows and

  712. acquainted with

  713. grief.

  714. And as one

  715. from whom men

  716. hide their

  717. faces,

  718. he was

  719. despised and

  720. we esteemed

  721. him not.

  722. Surely he

  723. has borne our

  724. griefs and

  725. carried our

  726. sorrows,

  727. yet we

  728. esteemed him

  729. stricken,

  730. smitten by

  731. God and

  732. afflicted.

  733. But he

  734. was pierced

  735. for our

  736. transgressions,

  737. he was

  738. crushed for

  739. our

  740. iniquities.

  741. Upon him

  742. was the

  743. chastisement

  744. that brought

  745. us peace,

  746. and with

  747. his wounds

  748. we are

  749. healed.

  750. Go over

  751. with me to

  752. verse 10.

  753. Yet it

  754. was the

  755. will of

  756. the Lord

  757. to crush

  758. him.

  759. He has

  760. put him

  761. to grief.

  762. When his

  763. soul makes

  764. an offering

  765. for guilt,

  766. he shall

  767. see his

  768. offspring,

  769. he shall

  770. prolong

  771. his days.

  772. The will

  773. of the

  774. Lord

  775. shall

  776. prosper

  777. in his

  778. hand.

  779. Out of

  780. the anguish

  781. of his

  782. soul,

  783. he shall

  784. see and

  785. be satisfied.

  786. By his

  787. knowledge

  788. shall the

  789. righteous

  790. one,

  791. my servant,

  792. make many

  793. to be

  794. accounted

  795. righteous,

  796. and he

  797. shall bear

  798. their

  799. iniquities.

  800. Therefore,

  801. I will

  802. divide him

  803. a portion

  804. with the

  805. many,

  806. and he

  807. shall

  808. divide

  809. the

  810. spoil

  811. with the

  812. strong,

  813. because he

  814. poured

  815. out his

  816. soul

  817. to death

  818. and was

  819. numbered

  820. with the

  821. transgressors.

  822. Do you

  823. hear the

  824. upside-down

  825. surprise

  826. that's

  827. summarized

  828. in verse

  829. 12?

  830. The servant

  831. king will

  832. divide the

  833. spoil with

  834. the strong

  835. because he

  836. poured out

  837. his soul

  838. to death.

  839. Dividing the

  840. spoil was

  841. what victors

  842. of the

  843. battles do.

  844. They conquer

  845. the enemy,

  846. they acquire

  847. the spoil

  848. of war.

  849. But this

  850. king's mighty

  851. conquering was

  852. not by pouring

  853. out his

  854. enemy's blood,

  855. but through

  856. pouring out

  857. his soul

  858. to death

  859. like a

  860. humble servant.

  861. This was

  862. God's

  863. choice.

  864. He had

  865. options,

  866. and this is

  867. what he chose

  868. to do.

  869. He would

  870. demonstrate his

  871. might toward

  872. rebellious sinners

  873. not by crushing

  874. them, but by

  875. being crushed

  876. for them.

  877. So when we

  878. behold the

  879. stricken servant

  880. nailed to a

  881. Roman execution

  882. stake in Luke

  883. 23, and he's

  884. gasping for breath

  885. and groaning

  886. under the crushing

  887. weight of our

  888. rebellion against

  889. God, we hear

  890. three groups of

  891. people taunt him,

  892. and they tell him

  893. to save himself.

  894. In Luke 23,

    Luke 23:35

  895. verse 35, the

  896. Jewish leaders

  897. mock Jesus, and

  898. they say, he

  899. saved others.

  900. Let him save

  901. himself, if he

  902. is the Christ of

  903. God, his chosen

  904. one.

  905. In the very next

  906. verse, the Roman

  907. soldiers mock him.

  908. If you're the king

  909. of the Jews, save

  910. yourself.

  911. The thief on the

  912. cross next to him

  913. rails at Jesus in

  914. verse 39.

  915. Are you not the

  916. Christ?

  917. Save yourself and

  918. us.

  919. Christ.

  920. But the might of

  921. this anointed

  922. ruler, whose name

  923. is Mighty God, was

  924. surprisingly not

  925. being exercised on

  926. his own behalf to

  927. save himself, but to

  928. obey the will of his

  929. father and to remain

  930. on the cross for the

  931. sake of people

  932. condemned to eternal

  933. judgment for me and

  934. for you.

  935. Jesus could have

  936. stopped that whole

  937. ordeal even before it

  938. started.

  939. And at any point

  940. during it, he could

  941. have said enough.

  942. But he exercised his

  943. might in a surprising

  944. way according to God's

  945. surprising plan to take

  946. each step toward the

  947. cross and endure the

  948. terrifying wrath of God

  949. on our behalf.

  950. It was God's surprising

  951. plan for Jesus, the

  952. Messiah, the ruler, the

  953. mighty God to use his

  954. power to pour himself

  955. out to death for an

  956. undeserving people so we

  957. could have life.

  958. And three days later, God

  959. mightily raised him from

  960. death.

  961. And he is the risen Lord

  962. Jesus, our mighty God

  963. forever.

  964. This is God's surprising

  965. plan.

  966. But God's surprising plan is

  967. not yet finished.

  968. Our servant King Jesus is

  969. right now enthroned in

  970. glory.

  971. Because he conquered his

  972. enemies and delivered his

  973. people through the

  974. humility and weakness of

  975. the cross, God highly

  976. exalted him and gave him

  977. the name above every name

  978. so that the name of Jesus

  979. every knee should bow and

  980. every tongue confess that

  981. Jesus is the mighty Lord

  982. to the glory of God the

  983. Father.

  984. And one day this mighty God

  985. will return in full

  986. splendor and strength to

  987. establish his kingdom

  988. forever.

  989. He will indeed judge in

  990. righteousness and

  991. everything for you and me

  992. will hinge on whether we

  993. have bowed the knee to this

  994. mighty God on this side of

  995. eternity or not.

  996. So how are we to respond to

  997. this surprising news of

  998. great joy of this mighty

  999. servant King who conquers by

  1000. laying down his rights?

1001. There are two things I'd like

1002. for us to consider how to

1003. respond to this good news in

  1004. faith and obedience.

  1005. First, it's helpful to

  1006. identify where you're at.

1007. If you have bowed the knee

  1008. and trusted in this

  1009. trustworthy King, this

  1010. mighty God, then Paul's

1011. words from Colossians 1 are

  1012. true of you.

1013. God has delivered you from

1014. the domain of darkness and

  1015. transferred you into the

  1016. kingdom of his beloved

1017. Son in whom we have

  1018. redemption, the forgiveness

  1019. of sins.

1020. God has delivered you from

  1021. God.

1022. So because of the might and

  1023. power of God exercised

  1024. through death and

  1025. resurrection of Jesus, he

1026. has undone the power of

  1027. darkness over us.

1028. He has brought us into the

1029. kingdom of his light by being

  1030. under his gracious and

  1031. loving rule.

  1032. So give thanks.

1033. Give thanks to this mighty

1034. God if you are under his

  1035. mighty and loving rule.

1036. On the other hand, if you're

1037. aware that you have not

1038. bowed the knee to this

  1039. mighty God who poured

1040. himself out for you, if

1041. you're aware that you have

1042. a need to be rescued by

1043. him, call out to him.

  1044. Confess your offense to

  1045. God.

1046. Turn from it and turn to

  1047. him.

1048. He will transfer you from

  1049. Satan's dark dominion into

1050. the kingdom of his beloved

  1051. Son.

1052. Secondly, if you belong to

1053. this servant king, then you

1054. have the privilege to join

1055. him in his kingdom work now.

  1056. It's not flashy.

1057. It's not might makes right.

1058. It's not worldly wisdom kind

  1059. of work.

1060. Rather, it's the joyful and

1061. daily labor of taking up your

1062. cross as he took up his.

1063. It's denouncing our right to

  1064. rule our own lives.

  1065. Giving ourselves over to

1066. death to self for Jesus'

  1067. sake.

1068. And there, and only there,

1069. can we find the true joy

1070. that he brings and lasting

  1071. kingdom fruit.

  1072. So servant-like humility and

  1073. sacrificial obedience and

1074. self-giving love are not just

  1075. the Lord Jesus' marching

  1076. orders.

1077. They are ours as well.

1078. Exercising our right to lay

1079. down our rights, our time,

1080. our comfort, our resources for

  1081. the good of others.

1082. That is the normal pattern of

  1083. the Christian life.

1084. Listen to Jesus' words from

  1085. John 13.

1086. He just finished washing his

  1087. disciples' feet.

1088. Listen to these words as if he's

  1089. speaking right to you.

1090. You call me teacher and Lord,

1091. and you are right, for so I am.

1092. If I then, your Lord and

1093. teacher, have washed your feet,

1094. you also ought to wash another's

  1095. feet.

1096. Truly, truly, I say to you, a

1097. servant is not greater than his

1098. master, nor is a messenger

1099. greater than the one who sent

  1100. them.

1101. If you know these things, blessed

1102. are you if you do them.

1103. So if mighty God incarnate has so

1104. powerfully given himself for you

1105. so that you could be rescued from

1106. the wrath of God on your sin,

1107. then surely we cannot be greater

  1108. than our master.

1109. We serve others because he served

  1110. us.

1111. We love because he first loved us.

1112. It is right for us to imitate the

1113. mighty God who used his might to

  1114. serve us.

1115. So, in what area of your life are you

1116. needing to become more like the

1117. mighty God who is the servant king?

1118. How is the risen Lord Jesus calling

1119. you to follow him into a joyful

1120. laying down of your rights and

1121. comforts for the earthly and

1122. eternal good of those around you?

1123. Is it in your marriage?

1124. Humbly caring for your spouse and

1125. putting their interests ahead of

  1126. your own?

1127. Is it with your children?

1128. Giving yourself over to prayer for

1129. them and patiently disciplining them

1130. and discipling them in the Lord?

1131. Are there opportunities for you to

1132. humble yourself on behalf of

  1133. extended family members this

1134. Christmas season or coworkers and

1135. serve them as the hands and feet of

1136. Jesus even though it may cost you

  1137. in some way?

1138. Is it perhaps in the way that you

1139. spend your free time and energy and

  1140. finances?

1141. Are you hoarding time and energy and

1142. money that God has given you to build

1143. your own kingdom of self-security or are

1144. you seeking to trust the mighty God to

1145. provide for you as you give yourself for

  1146. the good of others?

1147. So, whatever it is, go to God in

1148. prayer and ponder how to respond rightly to

1149. him in faith and obedience.

1150. Let's respond to his mighty love by

1151. trusting him, adoring him, and giving of

1152. ourselves in the same way for the good of

1153. those around us and for his great glory.

  1154. Let's pray.

  1155. Let's pray.

1156. Father, thank you that it was your plan all

1157. along to demonstrate your great mighty

1158. strength to deliver your people through

1159. the cross and through the humble obedience

1160. and love of our Savior Jesus.

1161. Help us to trust you.

1162. Help us to lay down our lives to you as

1163. living sacrifices to adore this child who

1164. is God in the manger and to live for the

1165. risen servant king and all that you would

1166. have us do, Lord Jesus.

1167. Give us the faith and obedience we need

1168. now and the power of your spirit to respond

  1169. to your word.

  1170. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1171. Thank you.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.
