  1. every Saturday morning at 10.30 a.m.,

  2. the emergency weather siren goes off in Kenosha.

  3. It's a big test.

  4. And every Saturday morning at 10.30 a.m.,

  5. I'm usually in my office writing a sermon,

  6. and I hear that siren, and my heart drops.

  7. And then I remember it's 10.30 Saturday morning.

  8. This is just a test.

  9. Well, the purpose of the trumpeting of the emergency weather siren

  10. on Saturdays at 10.30 is to test the emergency warning system.

  11. But when it gets warm out,

  12. it's mid-July, late Friday afternoon,

  13. and we hear that siren blare,

  14. and there are these dark, imposing thunderstorms

  15. rolling in with a fierce wind,

  16. it's not practice anymore.

  17. At that moment, we're being warned.

  18. And when you're warned of an impending danger like that,

  19. you've got to stop what you're doing,

  20. and you make sure you can find some cover.

  21. And if you've got time,

  22. you're going to make sure those around you

  23. stop what they're doing

  24. so that they can find cover with you.

  25. This morning, you're going to be hearing

  26. the blaring of the seven trumpets of judgment

  27. from Revelation chapter 8 and 9 and into 11.

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  28. And this is no Saturday morning practice.

  29. This is not a practice test this morning.

  30. This morning, you're going to hear

  31. real warning of judgment

  32. blowing in on God's winds.

  33. So this morning, don't ignore the warning calls.

  34. Don't ignore God's mercy

  35. in the face of judgment.

  36. Like I mentioned,

  37. we've got a lot of real estate

  38. to cover this morning,

  39. so I first want to kind of give you

  40. a lay of the land

  41. of where we're going to be going,

  42. so I want to kind of place

  43. some things in your minds.

  44. So what you're going to see

  45. in chapter 8, verses 1 through 6,

  46. is an opening scene.

  47. It's essentially in verse 6,

  48. it's the raising of the trumpets to Blair.

  49. And then in chapter 8, verse 7,

  50. all the way through chapter 9,

  51. you have the six trumpets blasting

  52. one after another.

  53. There's some really interesting details in this.

  54. But when we get to chapter 10,

  55. we've got a break in the action.

  56. The six trumpet sounds,

  57. and then in chapter 10,

  58. in 11, 1 through 14,

  59. we have what's called an interlude

  60. between the sixth trumpet

  61. and the seventh trumpet.

  62. If you remember the sixth

  63. and the seventh seals,

  64. there was an interlude there too.

  65. It's chapter 7 of Revelation.

  66. And it's about the church

  67. in chapter 7,

  68. and chapter 10,

  69. in 11, 1 through 14,

  70. it's about the church too.

  71. It's about what we must be doing

  72. with these sirens going off

  73. in the trumpets.

  74. We're going to come back to that

  75. over the next two weeks.

  76. But what you have in chapter 11,

  77. verses 14 through 19,

  78. is the seventh trumpet.

  79. And what's interesting

  80. about the seventh trumpet

  81. is that you're no longer in earth.

  82. You're in heaven

  83. seeing something going on.

  84. And surprise,

  85. instead of devastation,

  86. you're seeing celebration.

  87. What's up with that?

  88. This morning,

  89. it's possible to hear these trumpets

  90. as some kind of Saturday morning

  91. practice test of a warning system.

  92. It's not a practice test.

  93. These are real warnings

  94. for us all today.

  95. Judgment is coming.

  96. So stop what you're doing.

  97. Stop living a life against God

  98. and find cover in the Lamb.

  99. And if you've already found cover

  100. in the Lamb,

  101. we need to be telling others

  102. about the judgment to come

  103. so that they can find cover

  104. in the Lamb with us.

  105. So let me begin

  106. by pointing you

  107. to this opening scene

  108. in chapter 8, 1 through 6.

  109. It sets up the trumpets.

  110. Chapter 8, verse 1,

  111. the Lamb opens the seventh seal

  112. of the scroll of God's plan

  113. for the fullness of time.

  114. And remember,

  115. up until this point,

  116. heaven has been a loud place.

  117. The Lamb and the one on the throne

  118. have been worshipped

  119. after by many,

  120. 24 elders,

  121. four living creatures,

  122. myriads of angels.

  123. Up until this point,

  124. heaven is a loud place.

  125. And then all of a sudden,

  126. we read,

  127. the Lamb opens the seventh seal

  128. and there's a half hour of silence.

  129. It makes you ask the question,

  130. what's the silence about?

  131. Well, look at verse 2.

  132. All of a sudden,

  133. there are seven angels

  134. who are standing before God

  135. and they have been given

  136. seven trumpets.

  137. Now look down at verse 6.

  138. Now those seven angels

  139. who had the seven trumpets

  140. prepare to blow them.

  141. So they're given the trumpets.

  142. Verse 6,

  143. that they raise them

  144. to blow them

  145. and then something happens

  146. in between them

  147. that's very important.

  148. In verses 3 and 4,

  149. we see another angel

  150. coming and standing

  151. in the heavenly,

  152. before the heavenly altar.

  153. It's gold before the throne.

  154. This is in heaven

  155. before God

  156. and he's holding in his hand

  157. a golden censer.

  158. Basically,

  159. that's a ceremonial fire pan

  160. that you burn incense in

  161. in the worship of God

  162. in the heavenly temple.

  163. What's this incense

  164. that we're reading about?

  165. Well, we hear,

  166. what we read in verse 3,

  167. he was given much incense

  168. to offer with the prayers

  169. of all the saints

  170. and in verse 4,

  171. the smoke of the incense

  172. with the prayers

  173. of the saints.

  174. Now flip back

  175. to chapter 5,

  176. verse 8.

  177. And when he had taken

  178. the scroll,

  179. the four living creatures

  180. and the 24 elders

  181. fell down before the lamb,

  182. each holding a harp

  183. and golden bowls

  184. full of incense,

  185. which are the prayers

  186. of the saints.

  187. It's best to understand

  188. that incense

  189. is our prayers

  190. being offered to God.

  191. Your praying

  192. is being pictured

  193. as an offering

  194. to God

  195. here in Revelation chapter 8.

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  196. It's the prayers

  197. of all the saints.

  198. So here's what we're getting at.

  199. Heaven is silent,

  200. trumpets are given,

  201. still silent

  202. so that God

  203. can hear

  204. the prayers

  205. of his saints.

  206. Not that there was

  207. a distraction before,

  208. it's focus.

  209. God's interested

  210. in the prayers

  211. of his saints.

  212. He hears

  213. all

  214. the saints'

  215. prayers

  216. and he hears them

  217. with pleasure.

  218. The silence

  219. is to hear

  220. his saints.

  221. Those

  222. sealed of God,

  223. chapter 7,

  224. verse 3,

  225. those

  226. whom Jesus

  227. is the

  228. exclusive

  229. center

  230. of their

  231. lives

  232. and Jesus

  233. is becoming

  234. more and more

  235. important.

  236. It's by his blood

  237. that we even have

  238. access into the throne room

  239. to begin with.

  240. The last prayer

  241. we have come across

  242. from God's people

  243. is in Revelation

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  244. chapter 6

  245. and it comes from

  246. a select group

  247. of the saints,

  248. the martyrs,

  249. the fifth seal.

  250. They're below the altar,

  251. this altar,

  252. and they are

  253. saying to God,

  254. how long,

  255. O Lord,

  256. how long

  257. until you vindicate

  258. and judge

  259. those who dwell

  260. on the earth

  261. for our blood?

  262. The last prayer

  263. we've come across,

  264. God hears all

  265. the prayers

  266. of his saints,

  267. but the last prayer

  268. in the book of Revelation

  269. is a prayer

  270. of vindication.

  271. God,

  272. when will you

  273. show us

  274. justice?

  275. justice?

  276. When will you

  277. do us right?

  278. God hears

  279. all of his saints,

  280. but here,

  281. what is being shown

  282. in particular

  283. is God hearing

  284. the particular prayers

  285. of his suffering

  286. saints

  287. calling out

  288. for justice.

  289. incense?

  290. Verse 4,

  291. they rise up,

  292. these prayers

  293. rise up

  294. with smoke

  295. to God,

  296. incense,

  297. from the censer

  298. in the angel's

  299. right hand.

  300. Verse 5,

  301. after those prayers

  302. are offered,

  303. the censer

  304. is empty

  305. and that angel

  306. takes the same censer

  307. that offered

  308. the prayers

  309. and then

  310. grabs a whole

  311. bunch of

  312. altar fire

  313. in the same

  314. altar

  315. and then

  316. he throws

  317. it down

  318. upon the earth.

  319. Do you see

  320. what's going on?

  321. See what's being

  322. pictured?

  323. Our prayers

  324. offered up,

  325. God responds

  326. by the pouring

  327. out of

  328. holy fire

  329. upon the earth.

  330. It's very

  331. important to notice

  332. that the first

  333. three trumpet

  334. blares

  335. deal with

  336. burning

  337. objects

  338. being

  339. cast

  340. down

  341. onto earth.

  342. It's an

  343. outworking

  344. of this.

  345. So,

  346. verse 5,

  347. the angel

  348. throws

  349. down

  350. the holy

  351. fire

  352. judgment

  353. in response

  354. to the prayers

  355. of the saints.

  356. There is

  357. this

  358. thunder,

  359. rumblings,

  360. flashes of lightning,

  361. earthquake,

  362. this is

  363. theophany,

  364. God is at

  365. work,

  366. and then

  367. in verse 6,

  368. the seven angels

  369. pick up their

  370. seven trumpets

  371. to blow.

  372. That's

  373. setting up

  374. the trumpets.

  375. And now

  376. let's turn

  377. to the

  378. trumpets

  379. themselves.

  380. Before,

  381. let me just

  382. say this.

  383. Remember how

  384. Jesus taught

  385. us to pray,

  386. our Father

  387. who is in

  388. heaven,

  389. hallowed be

  390. your name,

  391. your kingdom

  392. come.

  393. come.

  394. This

  395. puts some

  396. weight on

  397. that.

  398. When we

  399. pray,

  400. your kingdom

  401. come,

  402. we're asking

  403. God,

  404. God,

  405. bring justice

  406. on this

  407. earth

  408. with your

  409. reign.

  410. We're

  411. praying for

  412. Jesus to

  413. come.

  414. These

  415. seven trumpets

  416. are sounded

  417. in response

  418. to the

  419. prayers of

  420. the saints.

  421. it's a

  422. response of

  423. justice.

  424. It's your

  425. opening scene.

  426. Now let's

  427. look at

  428. verses

  429. seven

  430. through

  431. twelve

  432. where we

  433. read of

  434. the first

  435. four trumpets.

  436. What we

  437. have in

  438. the trumpets,

  439. the first

  440. six at least,

  441. they're broken

  442. up,

  443. they're divided.

  444. The first

  445. four,

  446. then the next

  447. two,

  448. and then the

  449. last one,

  450. the seventh.

  451. And there's a

  452. reason for it.

  453. But what we

  454. notice is that

  455. all start

  456. with a

  457. trumpet

  458. player.

  459. So they

  460. have some

  461. commonalities.

  462. The first

  463. four in

  464. particular have

  465. some things

  466. in common

  467. I want to

  468. point out.

  469. In chapter

  470. seven, we

  471. read the

  472. first angel

  473. blew his

  474. trumpet.

  475. And then

  476. verse seven,

  477. then verse

  478. eight, the

  479. second angel

  480. blew his

  481. trumpet.

  482. Verse 10,

  483. the third

  484. angel blew

  485. his trumpet.

  486. Verse 12,

  487. the fourth

  488. angel blew

  489. his trumpet.

  490. When you

  491. hear the

  492. word trumpet,

  493. don't think

  494. Dizzy

  495. Gillespie,

  496. don't think

  497. Wynton

  498. Marsalis,

  499. Louis Armstrong,

  500. Miles Davis

  501. playing their

  502. metal horn.

  503. These aren't

  504. those.

  505. These are

  506. shofars.

  507. These are

  508. ram's horns.

  509. These are

  510. the trumpets

  511. of Israel.

  512. These are

  513. the kinds

  514. of trumpets

  515. that were

  516. handed to

  517. the seven

  518. priests in

  519. Joshua 6

  520. who led

  521. out before

  522. the ark

  523. and they

  524. blared their

  525. trumpets

  526. before

  527. Jericho,

  528. blaring

  529. judgment,

  530. the city

  531. falls,

  532. the people

  533. enter the

  534. promised land.

  535. It gets

  536. played out

  537. the next

  538. four chapters

  539. in Revelation.

  540. What this

  541. trumpet blaring

  542. does is it

  543. announces

  544. judgment

  545. like an

  546. early

  547. warning

  548. weather

  549. siren.

  550. But it's

  551. more than

  552. that.

  553. Each trumpet

  554. blown is

  555. announcing

  556. the lamb

  557. reigns.

  558. Because each

  559. of these

  560. trumpets

  561. are being

  562. blown by

  563. an angel

  564. who's in

  565. the throne

  566. room,

  567. who's been

  568. given a

  569. trumpet

  570. by the

  571. lamb.

  572. He's behind

  573. it all.

  574. So these

  575. trumpets are

  576. announcing

  577. something,

  578. judgment

  579. and the

  580. reign of

  581. the lamb.

  582. and it

  583. also

  584. notice

  585. that these

  586. first four

  587. trumpet

  588. judgments,

  589. they fall

  590. on creation.

  591. In the

  592. first one,

  593. hail

  594. falls on

  595. the land.

  596. The second

  597. one,

  598. it looks

  599. like some

  600. kind of

  601. volcanic

  602. eruption

  603. on the

  604. sea.

  605. And then

  606. what appears

  607. to be a

  608. blazing

  609. meteor in

  610. the third

  611. judgment

  612. falls into

  613. the water.

  614. and then

  615. darkness

  616. comes upon

  617. the sun,

  618. moon,

  619. and the

  620. star in

  621. the fourth

  622. trumpet

  623. judgment.

  624. All creation

  625. will be

  626. affected by

  627. these four

  628. judgments and

  629. it will affect

  630. all of

  631. humanity,

  632. both those

  633. who've been

  634. sealed by

  635. the seal of

  636. the living

  637. God,

  638. chapter 7,

  639. verse 3,

  640. Christians,

  641. as well as

  642. those who

  643. have not been

  644. sealed with

  645. the,

  646. the seal of

  647. the lamb,

  648. but with

  649. the mark

  650. of the

  651. peace.

  652. These are

  653. cataclysmic

  654. events that

  655. will change

  656. life on

  657. earth as

  658. we know

  659. it.

  660. We can't

  661. get around

  662. it.

  663. It's going

  664. to affect

  665. the way

  666. that we

  667. live.

  668. Now,

  669. the first

  670. one is

  671. very

  672. interesting.

  673. It talks

  674. about hail

  675. coming down

  676. and the

  677. earth being

  678. burned up

  679. and a

  680. third,

  681. a third of

  682. the trees

  683. were burned

  684. up.

  685. I don't

  686. know about

  687. you.

  688. I don't

  689. know how

  690. this,

  691. how this

  692. intersects

  693. with global

  694. warming,

  695. but it

  696. should do

  697. at least

  698. this.

  699. It should

  700. give you

  701. at least

  702. a third

  703. option in

  704. explaining why

  705. our world

  706. is warming

  707. up.

  708. Option number

  709. one,

  710. human

  711. pollution.

  712. Option number

  713. two,

  714. just regular

  715. kind of,

  716. kind of

  717. rhythms of

  718. creation.

  719. Option number

  720. three,

  721. maybe this

  722. is God

  723. at work.

  724. Raising

  725. the

  726. temperature,

  727. causing

  728. questions to

  729. be asked.

  730. Why would

  731. God be

  732. willing to

  733. start destroying

  734. his creation?

  735. Here's why.

  736. God is

  737. willing to

  738. destroy his

  739. creation in

  740. order to

  741. rescue sinners

  742. from being

  743. destroyed.

  744. Why?

  745. Why?

  746. Why?

  747. Why?

  748. Why?

  749. Why?

  750. Why?

  751. Why?

  752. Why?

  753. Why?

  754. Why?

  755. So we

  756. see these

  757. judgments

  758. being poured

  759. out on

  760. creation.

  761. And what I

  762. also want to

  763. point out to

  764. you here is

  765. there are

  766. allusions

  767. to the

  768. plagues

  769. in Exodus.

  770. Each of

  771. the four

  772. judgments

  773. here,

  774. and then

  775. we'll see

  776. it more

  777. to come,

  778. are allusions

  779. to the

  780. plagues

  781. in Exodus.

  782. Remember,

  783. Moses,

  784. let my

  785. people go,

  786. and Pharaoh's

  787. like,

  788. whatever.

  789. And then

  790. God starts

  791. pouring out

  792. plagues

  793. on them.

  794. Judgments

  795. leading to

  796. Egypt,

  797. that idolatrous

  798. nation,

  799. their downfall,

  800. in order to

  801. deliver his

  802. people into

  803. the promised

  804. land.

  805. Trumpet

  806. one corresponds,

  807. alludes to

  808. plague seven

  809. of the hail

  810. coming down,

  811. Exodus chapter

  812. nine.

  813. Trumpets

  814. two and

  815. three have

  816. allusions to

  817. plague number

  818. one of

  819. blood,

  820. the Nile

  821. turning to

  822. blood.

  823. Fish

  824. dying,

  825. undrinkable

  826. water.

  827. Trumpet

  828. number

  829. four corresponds

  830. to plague

  831. nine,

  832. darkness

  833. covering the

  834. land,

  835. Exodus

  836. 10.

  837. Trumpet

  838. five,

  839. plague

  840. eight,

  841. a plague

  842. of locusts,

  843. wait till you

  844. see those,

  845. and then

  846. trumpet six.

  847. What you're

  848. going to see,

  849. there's no

  850. specific allusion

  851. to one of the

  852. plagues in

  853. Exodus,

  854. just the word

  855. plague gets

  856. explicitly

  857. used there.

  858. So,

  859. why would

  860. plagues

  861. in Exodus

  862. be showing

  863. up in

  864. Revelation

  865. chapters

  866. eight and

  867. nine?

  868. because plagues

  869. in Exodus

  870. were God's

  871. warning to

  872. Egypt,

  873. to Pharaoh

  874. in particular,

  875. to force

  876. his hand to

  877. let his

  878. people go.

  879. There were

  880. judgments

  881. leading to

  882. deliverance.

  883. And all

  884. throughout

  885. Exodus and

  886. these plagues,

  887. there's a

  888. refrain,

  889. that you

  890. may know

  891. that I

  892. am

  893. the Lord.

  894. The gods

  895. of Egypt

  896. cannot deliver

  897. you,

  898. only

  899. I,

  900. the Lord,

  901. can.

  902. So,

  903. these trumpet

  904. judgments

  905. are God's

  906. modern-day

  907. plagues,

  908. like warnings

  909. to idolaters

  910. in response

  911. to his

  912. suffering servants

  913. crying out

  914. for deliverance.

  915. and they're

  916. purposed.

  917. I'm not sure

  918. if you've

  919. noticed this,

  920. but there

  921. is a

  922. repeated

  923. little phrase.

  924. It's

  925. the phrase

  926. a third

  927. that shows

  928. up in all

  929. of these

  930. four judgments.

  931. A third.

  932. It's used

  933. 13 times.

  934. And what's

  935. it getting

  936. at is

  937. restraint.

  938. God's

  939. restraining

  940. his judgment

  941. on creation.

  942. The point

  943. is that

  944. it's one

  945. third,

  946. not two

  947. thirds,

  948. or three

  949. thirds.

  950. It's a

  951. fraction

  952. of creation

  953. being

  954. destroyed

  955. and

  956. disrupted,

  957. and it's

  958. for a

  959. reason.

  960. When you

  961. read that

  962. little phrase

  963. a third,

  964. you need

  965. to be

  966. thinking

  967. mercy.

  968. 13

  969. times

  970. mercy.

  971. God's

  972. mercy

  973. is

  974. restraining

  975. his

  976. justice

  977. and his

  978. wrath

  979. for this

  980. purpose,

  981. to give

  982. those who

  983. dwell on

  984. the earth

  985. opportunity

  986. to repent,

  987. to stop

  988. their

  989. idolatrous

  990. worship,

  991. to stop

  992. their sinful

  993. ways,

  994. and to

  995. find cover

  996. in the

  997. lamb.

  998. him.

  999. His

  1000. mercy

  1001. restrains

  1002. for the

  1003. purpose

  1004. to save.

  1005. Now,

  1006. if you flip

  1007. over to

  1008. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3:9

  1009. chapter 3

  1010. verse 9,

  1011. it's another

  1012. section

  1013. talking about

  1014. the last

  1015. days,

  1016. God's

  1017. coming

  1018. judgment,

  1019. and verse

  1020. 9 says,

  1021. the Lord

  1022. is not

  1023. slow to

  1024. fulfill

  1025. his

  1026. promise,

  1027. as some

  1028. count

  1029. slowness,

  1030. but is

  1031. patient

  1032. toward you,

  1033. not wishing

  1034. that any

  1035. should perish,

  1036. but all

  1037. should reach

  1038. repentance.

  1039. These are

  1040. warning trumpets,

  1041. warning sirens

  1042. going off

  1043. for those

  1044. on the

  1045. planet who

  1046. have yet

  1047. to repent.

  1048. It's

  1049. announcements

  1050. of comprehensive

  1051. devastations on

  1052. only part

  1053. of creation.

  1054. One third

  1055. is mercy.

  1056. It's not a

  1057. practice warning.

  1058. The warning

  1059. is real.

  1060. So if you're

  1061. in the room

  1062. right now,

  1063. and you're not

  1064. a follower

  1065. of Jesus,

  1066. you've got to

  1067. stop what

  1068. you're doing,

  1069. what you're

  1070. living for.

  1071. If it's not

  1072. Jesus,

  1073. you've got to

  1074. stop it.

  1075. And what you

  1076. need to do

  1077. is you need

  1078. to turn

  1079. from that

  1080. and turn

  1081. to Jesus

  1082. and find

  1083. cover in

  1084. him.

  1085. Those are

  1086. the four

  1087. trumpet

  1088. judgments

  1089. to start.

  1090. And then

  1091. in verse

  1092. 13 of

  1093. chapter 8,

  1094. we have

  1095. a rather

  1096. interesting

  1097. transition.

  1098. We read

  1099. this.

  1100. Then I

  1101. looked and

  1102. I heard

  1103. an eagle

  1104. crying with

  1105. a loud

  1106. voice as

  1107. it flew

  1108. directly

  1109. overhead.

  1110. Woe,

  1111. woe,

  1112. woe to

  1113. those who

  1114. dwell on

  1115. the earth

  1116. at the

  1117. blasts of

  1118. the other

  1119. three trumpets

  1120. that the

  1121. three angels

  1122. are about

  1123. to blow.

  1124. The last

  1125. three trumpets.

  1126. This

  1127. angel flying

  1128. like an eagle,

  1129. it's a

  1130. reference back

  1131. to 4

  1132. verse 7,

  1133. one of the

  1134. living creatures

  1135. like an

  1136. eagle flying.

  1137. He's saying

  1138. the last

  1139. three trumpets

  1140. are way

  1141. worse than

  1142. the first

  1143. four.

  1144. Woe.

  1145. Woe on

  1146. those who

  1147. dwell on

  1148. the earth

  1149. when these

  1150. judgments

  1151. roll in.

  1152. Because these

  1153. judgments are

  1154. going to be

  1155. increasing in

  1156. intensity and

  1157. narrowing in

  1158. focus.

  1159. When we

  1160. read about

  1161. those who

  1162. dwell on

  1163. the earth,

  1164. I mentioned

  1165. a couple

  1166. weeks ago

  1167. in a

  1168. sermon that

  1169. that's a

  1170. technical way

  1171. of talking

  1172. about non-Christians.

  1173. It's not

  1174. talking about

  1175. all the

  1176. inhabitants on

  1177. the planet.

  1178. It's talking

  1179. about those

  1180. on the

  1181. planet who

  1182. are not

  1183. living for

  1184. Jesus but

  1185. for

  1186. themselves,

  1187. which ends

  1188. up being

  1189. part of

  1190. beastly

  1191. worship.

  1192. So,

  1193. these warnings

  1194. are those

  1195. who are

  1196. persisting in

  1197. the rejection

  1198. of the

  1199. lamb.

  1200. This eagle

  1201. is saying

  1202. woe,

  1203. woe,

  1204. woe to

  1205. them.

  1206. So,

  1207. let's look at

  1208. these three

  1209. trumpet blasts,

  1210. these warning

  1211. woes.

  1212. In the

  1213. fifth trumpet,

  1214. which is

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1215. chapter 9,

  1216. 1 through

  1217. 12,

  1218. 9, 1

  1219. starts again

  1220. with the

  1221. blowing of

  1222. a trumpet

  1223. by an

  1224. angel.

  1225. And remember,

  1226. that is an

  1227. announcement of

  1228. judgment.

  1229. This time,

  1230. it's going to be

  1231. increasing in

  1232. intensity and

  1233. narrowing in

  1234. focus.

  1235. And it's

  1236. also declaring,

  1237. brings us back

  1238. to the throne

  1239. room,

  1240. the lamb

  1241. reigns.

  1242. The lamb

  1243. reigns.

  1244. He's behind

  1245. this.

  1246. The first

  1247. four trumpet

  1248. judgments,

  1249. they were

  1250. natural forces

  1251. bringing

  1252. devastation to

  1253. creation.

  1254. The next

  1255. two judgments

  1256. are supernatural

  1257. forces,

  1258. demonic

  1259. forces,

  1260. wreaking

  1261. havoc on

  1262. the dwellers

  1263. of the

  1264. earth,

  1265. non-Christians.

  1266. It's going

  1267. to hurt

  1268. you to

  1269. read this.

  1270. 9, 1,

  1271. we read

  1272. about a

  1273. star that

  1274. is falling

  1275. from heaven

  1276. to earth.

  1277. It's a

  1278. reference to

  1279. Satan,

  1280. the devil.

  1281. Jesus in

  1282. his ministry

  1283. in Luke

  1284. 10, 18,

  1285. he almost

  1286. used the

  1287. same language.

  1288. He has

  1289. sent out his

  1290. 72 disciples

  1291. that have

  1292. come back,

  1293. they've seen

  1294. demons obey

  1295. them, and

  1296. Jesus says

  1297. this,

  1298. I saw

  1299. Satan fall

  1300. like lightning

  1301. from heaven.

  1302. Jesus'

  1303. ministry on

  1304. earth resulted

  1305. in Satan

  1306. falling from

  1307. heaven.

  1308. You'll see in

  1309. Revelation 12

  1310. that it's

  1311. talking about

  1312. the dragon

  1313. being thrown

  1314. down to

  1315. earth,

  1316. the subjugation

  1317. of the devil.

  1318. We read here

  1319. that he's

  1320. given a

  1321. key,

  1322. key.

  1323. And I just

  1324. want to

  1325. remind you

  1326. that we've

  1327. already seen

  1328. some keys.

  1329. It was on

  1330. Jesus, the

  1331. risen, radiant,

  1332. and wonderful

  1333. Lord in

  1334. Revelation 1.

  1335. He's got a

  1336. key chain, and

  1337. on his key

  1338. chain is the

  1339. key to death

  1340. and Hades.

  1341. Well, the

  1342. devil is given

  1343. a key.

  1344. And what that

  1345. means is he's

  1346. being allowed to

  1347. do something.

  1348. He's on a

  1349. leash.

  1350. leash.

  1351. Have you ever

  1352. seen a

  1353. convict who

  1354. wears the

  1355. ankle bracelet

  1356. that tells

  1357. officials where

  1358. they're at at

  1359. any given

  1360. time?

  1361. Satan, the

  1362. serpent, has

  1363. an ankle

  1364. bracelet.

  1365. He doesn't do

  1366. anything outside

  1367. of God's

  1368. purposes.

  1369. He's on a

  1370. leash.

  1371. And here we

  1372. see him being

  1373. thrown down, and

  1374. who throws him

  1375. down?

  1376. God himself

  1377. threw him

  1378. down through

  1379. the death and

  1380. resurrection of

  1381. Jesus.

  1382. And now he's

  1383. given a key,

  1384. and that key

  1385. turns the lock

  1386. on a shaft of

  1387. the bottomless

  1388. pit, verse 2.

1389. Think of it as a

  1390. hell hole.

  1391. And those who

  1392. are resident in

  1393. that hell hole

  1394. are angels that

  1395. have been

  1396. imprisoned, 2

    2 Peter 2:4

  1397. Peter 2,

  1398. verse 4.

  1399. And they're not

  1400. partying down

  1401. there.

  1402. They're raging.

  1403. So here what we

  1404. see happening is

  1405. Satan, he's been

  1406. thrown down, he's

  1407. given permission to

  1408. release a demonic

  1409. horde from a

  1410. hell hole, a

  1411. demonic horde that

  1412. God put there.

  1413. And now God is

  1414. allowing their

  1415. release, and the

  1416. question is, why

  1417. would he let them

  1418. be released?

  1419. Let's keep on

  1420. reading.

  1421. Verse 2, the

  1422. hell holes opened

  1423. up, smoke like the

  1424. smoke of a great

  1425. furnace comes out,

  1426. smoke coming out of

  1427. the shaft.

  1428. And with that smoke

  1429. coming out of the

  1430. shaft, verse 3,

  1431. came locusts on the

  1432. earth.

  1433. You should be

  1434. thinking plague

  1435. ate.

  1436. But these aren't,

  1437. these aren't your

  1438. ordinary locusts.

  1439. These locusts do

  1440. something other than

  1441. what normal locusts

  1442. do.

  1443. What do normal

  1444. locusts do?

  1445. Swarms of normal

  1446. locusts in a plague,

  1447. they eat green stuff.

  1448. Anything,

  1449. everywhere.

  1450. These locusts are

1451. told not to eat any

  1452. green thing, plant or

  1453. any tree.

  1454. But here's what

  1455. they're to do, verse

  1456. 4.

1457. Their job, their job is

  1458. to torment.

  1459. Torment those people

1460. who do not have the

1461. seal of God on their

  1462. foreheads.

  1463. That word torment is

  1464. used in Revelation not

1465. to describe so much of

  1466. a physical torment but

  1467. a psychological torment

1468. to wreak havoc on the

  1469. minds of non-Christians.

  1470. So much so, our

  1471. non-Christians friends

  1472. and family would rather

1473. die than to suffer the

  1474. mental anguish these

  1475. demons are bringing to

1476. bear on them in this

  1477. play.

  1478. It's a horrific sight.

  1479. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

  1480. Whoa to those non-

1481. Christians who are on the

  1482. planet when this happens.

  1483. These locusts represent a

  1484. demonic onslaught from a

  1485. hell hole to torment

  1486. non-Christians, the

  1487. dwellers on the earth.

  1488. In verses 7 through 10, we

1489. see a description of these

1490. locusts like demons and it's

1491. kind of grotesque and they're

  1492. bent on tormenting.

1493. And you know what the irony of

  1494. it all is?

  1495. These are demonic.

  1496. Released by Satan.

1497. And they're attacking those with

1498. the mark of the beast.

1499. Those who don't have the seal of

  1500. the lamb.

  1501. It's horrific.

  1502. Satan is tormenting his

  1503. quote unquote own.

1504. In verse 11, we read that

1505. there is an angel of the

1506. bottomless pit, the king of the

  1507. hell hole.

1508. His Hebrew name is Abaddon.

1509. His Greek name is Apollyon.

  1510. One means destruction.

  1511. The other means destroyer.

1512. You can call him the

  1513. exterminator.

  1514. He wreaks havoc.

1515. Some think that he's Satan.

1516. But I tend to think that this is

1517. an early introduction to the

  1518. beast.

  1519. And here's why.

1520. When we get into the bull

  1521. judgments.

  1522. Where God's wrath is

  1523. unrestrained.

  1524. In the corresponding bull

  1525. judgment.

  1526. The fifth bull.

1527. The throne of the beast.

  1528. Gets whacked.

1529. Whether it's Satan or the

  1530. beast.

  1531. It's Apollyon.

  1532. He's a destroyer.

1533. I tend to think about him as the

1534. second person of the anti-trinity.

  1535. He's the destroyer.

  1536. Not the savior.

1537. The first woe is the releasing of a

1538. demonic plague from a hell hole on

  1539. non-Christians.

  1540. But there's restraint.

  1541. There's mercy.

  1542. There's mercy.

  1543. There's mercy.

  1544. There's mercy.

  1545. There's mercy.

  1546. There's mercy.

  1547. There's mercy.

  1548. There's mercy.

  1549. Even in this.

1550. The lamb wants these unrepentant

1551. ones to stop what they're doing

1552. and find cover in his blood.

  1553. They're tormented.

  1554. Not killed.

  1555. Mercy.

1556. And they're tormented for five

  1557. months.

  1558. It's a mercy.

  1559. It's a mercy.

  1560. And there's another kind of a

  1561. mercy.

  1562. mercy.

1563. The church is still on earth.

1564. This torment is on only those who do not have the seal of God.

1565. Which means that at this time, those with the seal of God are present.

  1566. They're there.

  1567. Which means this.

1568. Those of us who are here at this time, we're not going to be looking at those people suffering

1569. mental anguish from demons and being saved like, oh, I told you so.

1570. I knew that was coming.

  1571. Sorry, buddy.

1572. We're going to be doing things like this.

  1573. No, no, no.

1574. You can find shelter in the lamb still.

  1575. There's still time.

1576. Come find shelter in the blood of Jesus.

1577. There's mercy present in the first woe, the fifth trumpet.

  1578. There's opportunity to repent.

1579. But judgment is increasing in its intensity and narrowing in its focus, which brings us

1580. to the sixth trumpet, the second woe.

  1581. This is chapter 9, verses 12 through 21.

    Isaiah 9:12–21

1582. Again, we start with the trumpet in verse 13.

1583. And when you hear that trumpet, Blair, you need to be thinking, one, judgment, and two,

1584. the lamb is on his throne reigning.

1585. And in verse 13, we hear a voice from the heavenly altar.

  1586. I tend to think it's the lamb's voice.

1587. And this is to remind us that what is happening is in response to his saints' prayers.

1588. And this voice says to the sixth angel who's blowing this trumpet, he says to the angel,

1589. release the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates.

1590. And just make sure you understand, these four angels aren't nice guy angels.

  1591. They're not good angels.

  1592. There's a reason why they're bound.

1593. It's like those demons who've been in the hell hole.

1594. These two have been bound at the river Euphrates because they're evil.

1595. The reference to the Euphrates, maybe that's making a, well, why is that there?

1596. Well, the Euphrates was classically the eastern border of ancient Israel and Rome at this time.

1597. And the Euphrates formed a natural barrier against military invasion for both Israel and Rome.

1598. And so what we're seeing here is this trumpet is announcing some kind of invasion militarily.

1599. I'm not sure if you noticed this, but in verse 15, if you look,

1600. so the four angels who had been prepared for the hour, the day, the month, and the year

1601. were released to kill a third of mankind.

1602. These angels had been prepared for this day.

1603. This has been a long time coming, which is really interesting because this is also a response

  1604. to the saints' prayers.

1605. And so what we have in a little microcosm is this really interesting intersection between

1606. human responsibility in our praying and God's sovereignty in His planning.

  1607. Both are true.

  1608. Both are true.

  1609. But they're invading with a purpose.

1610. The purpose is to kill.

  1611. Released with a purpose.

1612. To kill one third of mankind.

1613. Increasing intensity and narrowing of focus.

1614. The first four trumpets, natural forces on creation.

1615. Trumpets five and six, supernatural forces on unrepentant mankind.

1616. And now the question becomes, how are these angels going to wipe out one third of mankind?

1617. And the answer is war.

  1618. Sixteen.

1619. The number of mounted troops was twice ten thousand.

1620. We go from a description of these four angels to now all these troops.

1621. Two hundred million is if you do the math, literally.

  1622. Massive amounts of troops.

1623. Seventeen through nineteen, we read descriptions of these horde, these riders of horses.

1624. They're corresponding in their colors.

1625. But the focus lands on the horses.

1626. And from their mouth, three plagues.

  1627. Plagues come.

1628. Destroying one third of mankind.

  1629. There's the word, plague.

  1630. Exodus is behind this.

1631. Woe to those one third.

1632. Now I tend to think that this is a demonic force, but it also could be a demonic force mobilizing human armies.

1633. We're just going to let God's word show us what it is as we go along.

1634. But don't miss the irony.

  1635. It's a dark irony.

1636. It's demonic forces mobilizing an army that will destroy one third of those who have not repented before the Lamb.

  1637. Satan destroying his own.

1638. But again, there is restraint in even the sixth trumpet.

1639. It's not all of mankind.

1640. It is a third of mankind.

  1641. Mercy.

1642. The Lamb is showing mercy to the unrepentant.

1643. Woe to those who die.

1644. Woe to those who die.

1645. And may it be a message for everyone else to stop what they're doing and find shelter in the presence of God.

1646. Can you hear the words echoing?

1647. That they may know that I am the Lord.

1648. Here's one of the most tragic things you'll read.

  1649. Despite all the mercy.

1650. Despite all the warning trumpets.

1651. Despite all that's going on.

  1652. I'm just going to read chapter 9 verses 20 and 21.

1653. The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues.

1654. Did not repent of the works of their hands.

1655. Nor give up worshiping demons and idols of gold and silver and bronze and stone and wood.

1656. Which cannot see or hear or walk.

1657. Nor did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

1658. Those left after the sixth trumpet stubbornly resist the mercy of the Lamb.

1659. They choose not to stop what they're doing.

1660. They choose not to find cover in the Lamb.

  1661. Heartbreaking isn't it?

1662. We get to the end of the seventh trumpet.

1663. And maybe you're starting to ask the question.

1664. Hey what about the church?

  1665. What's going on?

  1666. Where's the church?

  1667. What's up?

  1668. What's up?

1669. Well that's answered in the next chapter and a half.

1670. Chapter 10 and the first half of chapter 11.

1671. And in these passages we're shown two pictures that call us to be courageous in our witness to those who are suffering.

1672. And being called to repent.

1673. Like I said we'll come back to that in the next couple weeks.

1674. If you pick up in chapter 11.

1675. If you turn to chapter 11 now.

  1676. Verse 14.

1677. The second woe has passed.

1678. Behold the third woe is soon to come.

1679. And with what we've been through already you're thinking woe.

  1680. Okay.

1681. What kind of devastation is next?

  1682. 11.15.

1683. The seventh angel blows the last trumpet.

1684. It's an announcement of judgment right?

  1685. The lamb reigns right?

1686. But what happens is surprising.

  1687. We don't see a woe.

1688. There's nothing woe-ish about what we read next.

  1689. Seemingly.

1690. And there were loud voices in heaven saying the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ.

1691. And he shall reign forever and ever.

1692. All of a sudden we're off the earth and in heaven.

1693. We're being shown something in the future that has present implications.

  1694. There's a multitude.

  1695. Loud voices in heaven.

  1696. I'm guessing it's a multitude who are standing.

  1697. I'm guessing it's a multinational multitude.

  1698. A multi-ethnic multitude.

1699. A multi-lingual multitude who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus.

1700. And they're saying the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of the Lord and of his Christ.

  1701. It's the surprise.

1702. Instead of devastation, we're seeing celebration.

  1703. Celebration in heaven.

1704. And what they're celebrating is that God has removed all his adversaries on earth.

1705. It's like this big giant all clear being sounded.

  1706. It's done.

1707. All of his enemies have been put down.

1708. It's a picture of what will happen following Christ's return when he wipes out all of his opposition.

1709. All of God's people are saying yes.

  1710. Jesus wins.

  1711. Yes.

1712. And that's good news for us.

  1713. Jesus wins.

1714. It's good news for us.

1715. To see this picture when it's all done.

1716. And simultaneously, it's woeful news for the unrepentant.

1717. Our celebration of what he will do in fullness is woe to those who are unrepentant because our celebration happens simultaneously to their ultimate destruction.

1718. Do you know how I know that this takes place after the return of Jesus?

1719. It's because five words are missing in verse 17.

  1720. Five words are missing.

1721. The church says the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of Christ.

1722. There are 24 elders who sit around the thrones.

1723. They fall on their faces and worship God.

1724. In verse 17, they say,

1725. We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was.

1726. For you have taken your great power and begun to reign.

  1727. Something missing.

1728. Flip back to chapter 1, verse 8.

1729. I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come.

  1730. The Almighty.

  1731. Chapter 4.

  1732. Verse 8.

1733. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.

1734. Five words are missing here.

1735. Who is and who was.

  1736. He's already come.

1737. And when he comes, he comes against raging nations against him in his wrath.

1738. And at that time, all the dead will be judged.

  1739. Verse 18.

1740. At that time, the rewarding of his servants, both small and great.

1741. At that time, the destruction of the destroyers.

  1742. Revelation 20.

  1743. Judgment.

  1744. Revelation 21.

  1745. Reward.

  1746. Revelation back to 20.

1747. The destruction of the destroyers, the devil, the beast, the false prophets, even death,

1748. are tossed with a hip check into the lake of fire.

1749. This is great news for us.

1750. Our victory is as good as done in Jesus.

1751. But that in lies the woe for the unrepentant.

1752. Our coming victory is their coming doom.

  1753. And it's sure.

1754. This morning we have looked at the seven trumpets.

1755. And I'm trying to tell you, this is not some Saturday morning practice test.

1756. You are really being warned.

  1757. By God.

  1758. Judgment is coming.

1759. So if you're not a Christian yet.

1760. So if you're not a Christian yet, stop your idolatrous worship in your sinful living.

1761. And find shelter in the blood of the Lamb.

1762. The one who is warning you is welcoming you.

1763. With wrists bearing nail marks.

1764. The wrath to come you can avoid because Jesus bore the wrath already on the cross.

1765. And what you non-Christian, if you're not a follower of Jesus, all you need to do is this.

1766. Jesus, I'm trying to find shelter.

  1767. And I'm here and it's you.

  1768. Shelter me.

  1769. Shelter me.

  1770. He will shelter you.

1771. Stop what you're doing and find shelter in the Lamb.

1772. And for those of us who have been sealed with the seal of God.

1773. We've repented of our sin.

  1774. We've turned to Christ.

1775. We know we're being sheltered on that day.

  1776. We're being given time.

  1777. We're being given time.

  1778. We're being given time.

1779. To tell others of what is coming so that they too can stop what they're doing.

1780. And with us find shelter in the Lamb.

1781. That's what we're going to look at the next two weeks.

1782. We're going to start with praying.

1783. We're going to start with praying.

1784. Would you bow with me now?

1785. Lord God, if this is all true and we believe it is, this informs the way we live.

1786. It compels us to live for you.

1787. To help those who don't know of the coming judgment.

1788. God, would you give us unprecedented opportunities in this city.

1789. Unprecedented opportunities to make people aware of the trumpets blaring.

1790. So that we, God, can point them to find shelter in you, Lord Jesus.

  1791. With us.

1792. God, would you, by your spirit, would you pour out your spirit on our city.

1793. Bringing conviction of sin and judgment to come.

1794. And awakening sinners to the Lamb.

1795. Who was slain and is standing.

1796. We pray this in the name of Jesus.

  1797. Amen.

1798. We pray this in the name of Jesus.

  1799. Amen.

  1800. Amen.

  1801. Amen.
