  1. This morning, as we just read, we're going to be in Revelation 15.

  2. So would you turn there in your Bibles?

  3. Revelation 15, 1 through 8, it's a short chapter, only eight verses, but it's an important one,

  4. a pivotal one in this part of the book.

  5. Today is April 7th, and if I have this right, we're only a couple of weeks away from the KUSD spring break.

  6. And then, only, I think, six weeks after that, it will be time for summer vacation.

  7. Even if it's been a long time since you've been a student in school, I'm sure you remember the glory, the joy of those breaks,

  8. and what it's like on that last day of school when you know that you have all this freedom stretched out in front of you.

  9. That joy of spring break or summer vacation when you sleep in and eat snacks or whatever you do, I don't know.

  10. I'm a teacher, so I live by this academic calendar, and I know this rhythm of the hardship of the semester

  11. and the joy of these breaks that come up.

  12. I teach at Trinity, and one of my friends and colleagues there who teaches theology, his name is David Louis.

  13. Louis, and he has a theory that I call the Louis Doctrine.

  14. The Louis Doctrine says that the joy we experience when we are released for spring break or summer vacation,

  15. the joy that we experience is directly proportionate to the pain that we experience during the semester.

  16. So in other words, the worse my semester, the longer the projects take, the sleepless nights, the hardship of the work,

  17. the worse it is, the sweeter that break will be when I'm finally released from it.

  18. We're staying up late, we're tired, and our eyes are bloodshot, and we're thinking to ourselves,

  19. how long, how long are we going to have to keep this up before we have that sweet break that lies ahead?

  20. We just can't wait to celebrate that.

  21. Well, school is hard, but it is nothing compared to the difficulty that we experience in life.

  22. From the moment we're born, we are wicked toward other people, and we are victims of their wickedness.

  23. And often the greatest hurts that we experience in life are the ways that we mistreat each other.

  24. Children are neglected and abused and mistreated by the same adults that are supposed to care for them and protect them.

  25. Teenagers go to school and are bullied and tormented by the cool kids.

  26. And then when we grow into adulthood, that's when the trouble really begins.

  27. We disrespect and hate each other.

  28. We treat each other with racism.

  29. We mock each other.

  30. Those of us who have influence and connections and money

  31. take advantage of people who are in vulnerable situations and make it worse.

  32. Poor women are trafficked and abused.

  33. People steal what they don't have and murder people that get in their way.

  34. They lie and they cheat each other, and our government officials are corrupt and make backroom deals.

  35. People kill their unborn babies to try and cover up bad decisions.

  36. Nations go to war against each other to try and claim influence or land,

  37. and they leave battlefields strewn with dead bodies and leave orphans and widows behind at home.

  38. Governments oppress their people and enslave and imprison them.

  39. And all of this suffering, it only takes a couple of days of reading the news to just get depressed,

  40. because all of this suffering that takes place in the world comes from the sin that we carry in our hearts like a disease.

  41. It just keeps manifesting itself in this wickedness that we do against each other.

  42. And even though all of us have unfortunately some kind of experience with these things,

  43. the hardships of daily life, those are common to all of humanity,

  44. there is a particular animosity that the people of the world have historically brought forth against the church.

  45. Followers of Jesus Christ have always been the target of outrage and rejection

  46. from the time that they were thrown to the lions in the Roman period,

  47. thrown in prison, churches burned.

  48. Even in our contemporary world, I mean, even in our country,

  49. lawyers are now taking Christians to church for what they believe,

  50. and I'm sorry, taking them to court for what they believe,

  51. and trying to put them out of business.

  52. In North Africa, militia groups burn villages and kidnap women and take them off who knows where.

  53. In North Korea, the government throws Christians into these terrible concentration camps

  54. where they just languish for years.

  55. And not long ago in the Middle East, radicals took Christians down to the beach

  56. and in front of video cameras, they cut off their heads.

  57. So we live in a world that is in rebellion against God,

  58. and often it just seems like the wicked are just getting away with it, doesn't it?

  59. Sometimes it just seems like there is just no recourse

  60. for the evil that people mete out against each other.

  61. The psalmist knew about this.

  62. Billy already read part of Psalm 73.

  63. Let's look at a few verses at the beginning.

  64. You can just listen.

  65. Psalm 73.

  66. Listen to what the psalmist says here.

  67. He says,

  68. In other words,

  69. What is the point of trying to faithfully follow God

  70. when these arrogant, wicked people just prosper and flourish in their lives

  71. and they seem to just get away with it year after year?

  72. What is the point of that?

  73. For all the day long, I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.

  74. And when I thought how to understand this,

  75. it seemed to me a wearisome task.

  76. It is hard to live among the wicked.

  77. How are we supposed to think about that?

  78. How are we supposed to live our lives in this world

  79. when people are so evil against each other?

  80. We may wonder,

  81. When is God finally going to do something about this?

  82. In Revelation 6, 9 and 10, it says,

  83. I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain

  84. for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.

  85. They have already been killed because they were following Jesus.

  86. And they cried out with a loud voice,

  87. O sovereign Lord, holy and true,

  88. how long before you will judge and avenge our blood

  89. on those who dwell on the earth?

  90. Well, our passage this morning in Revelation 15 is an answer to that.

  91. It's a celebration of God's victory over the wicked.

  92. Revelation 15, 1 through 8 introduces chapter 16,

  93. which we'll actually focus on next week,

  94. in which God pours out his ultimate anger and judgment on the earth.

  95. In our passage, Revelation 15,

  96. is a prospective celebration of that judgment.

  97. It's a victory song

  98. that God will judge and destroy evil once and for all.

  99. If a difficult semester brings all kinds of joy and happiness

  100. when the summer finally arrives,

  101. then can you imagine the celebration

  102. when God finally puts down all evil?

  103. Can you imagine the joy and the praise

  104. when God brings justice and destroys all wickedness

  105. and sets the world right?

  106. That's the topic of our passage this morning.

  107. Now, if you look at Revelation 15,

  108. you'll see that it is structured

  109. with three occurrences of the phrase,

  110. I looked or I saw.

  111. Look at 15, 1.

  112. He says, and I saw.

  113. And then if you look at 15, 2,

  114. he says, and I saw.

  115. And then in 15, 5, he says,

  116. after this, I looked.

  117. See that?

  118. So these phrases divide the passage into three parts.

  119. The beginning in verse 1

  120. and the end in verses 5 through 8

  121. are an introduction to the bowl judgments

  122. which are coming in chapter 16.

  123. So the beginning and the end of our passage

  124. is looking forward

  125. and the middle of our passage

  126. in verses 2 through 4

  127. are the celebration of what is coming.

  128. The celebration of the judgment.

  129. So this is how we're going to proceed.

  130. We're going to go a little bit out of order here.

  131. First, we're going to look at

  132. what God's people are celebrating

  133. in verse 1 and 5 through 8.

  134. And then we're going to look at

  135. why God's people are celebrating

  136. in the middle in verses 2 through 4.

  137. First, let's look at

  138. what God's people are celebrating.

  139. In verse 1, John sees a sign in heaven.

  140. There are seven angels with seven plagues.

  141. Previously, we read about seven angels

  142. with the seven churches in chapter 1

  143. and the seven angels with seven trumpets

  144. in chapter 8.

  145. But these are different

  146. because these are the last, it says.

  147. John has seen the seal judgments

  148. in chapters 6 through 8

  149. and he's seen the trumpet judges

  150. in chapters 8 through 11

  151. and now this is the end.

  152. With these seven, it says,

  153. the wrath of God is finished.

  154. It is completed.

  155. These aren't just the last judgments

  156. in the sequence

  157. and they're not just the last judgments

  158. in the book.

  159. These are the last judgments ever.

  160. This is the end.

  161. The word finished here means completed.

  162. It means God is going to have finished the job.

  163. It means his wrath,

  164. his righteous anger

  165. will be completely expressed.

  166. Now, if we skip to verse 5,

  167. John says that he looked

  168. and heaven was opened.

  169. This is what happens

  170. in the book of Revelation

  171. before each new phase.

  172. Before the seal judgments,

  173. heaven was opened.

  174. Before the trumpet judgments,

  175. it opened.

  176. Before the woman and the dragon.

  177. And now heaven is opened again

  178. and John can see in this vision

  179. into heaven

  180. and he sees a vision

  181. of the tent of witness there,

  182. the tabernacle.

  183. In the Old Testament,

  184. when God saved his people

  185. from slavery in Egypt,

  186. he established this tent,

  187. this tent of witness

  188. or tent of meeting,

  189. a tabernacle

  190. that represented his dwelling

  191. on the earth

  192. with his people.

  193. He made a covenant with them

  194. and he said,

  195. if you obey me,

  196. then I will bless you

  197. and I will live with you

  198. and we will be in relationship together.

  199. But if you disobey me

  200. and you break this covenant,

  201. there are going to be

  202. terrible consequences.

  203. So this tent of witness

  204. is a symbol

  205. that the nations

  206. have broken the covenant of God

  207. and now those consequences

  208. have arrived.

  209. And the point of this,

  210. the point of John looking into heaven

  211. and seeing the tent

  212. is that these judgments

  213. that are being introduced

  214. are from God.

  215. It's not just that the earth

  216. is getting old and tired.

  217. It's not just that

  218. they're having a bad year

  219. or that the sun

  220. is just about to burn out

  221. or something like that.

  222. The terrible things

  223. that John is about to describe

  224. are coming from heaven.

  225. And actually,

  226. John is more specific than that

  227. because if you look at verse 6,

  228. he says that the terrible plagues

  229. aren't just coming from heaven,

  230. they're coming from Jesus.

  231. How do we know that?

  232. It's because the seven angels

  233. are clothed in pure bright linen

  234. with golden sashes

  235. around their chests.

  236. In chapter 1, verse 13,

  237. that is exactly what Jesus is wearing.

  238. So in other words,

  239. these angels represent Christ.

  240. They're in the same uniform as Christ

  241. and they are carrying out his work.

  242. And then in verse 7,

  243. it says,

  244. four living creatures

  245. give seven golden bowls

  246. to the seven angels.

  247. Now that idea of four living creatures

  248. reminds us of some things

  249. in the earlier part of the book,

  250. in chapter 4,

  251. when four living creatures

  252. are standing around the throne of God

  253. and they're saying,

  254. holy, holy, holy

  255. is the Lord God Almighty

  256. who was and is and is to come.

  257. And in the book of Ezekiel,

  258. in the Old Testament,

  259. the four living creatures

  260. move with God's throne.

  261. They move with God's glory

  262. and they represent him.

  263. In Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  264. there are these heavenly creatures

  265. standing around God's throne

  266. and they're saying,

  267. holy, holy, holy.

  268. So what we have here

  269. is a tying together of these images,

  270. of these four living creatures

  271. who are in the inner sanctuary

  272. by God's throne.

  273. They stand around the throne

  274. praising him

  275. and calling him holy,

  276. holy, holy.

  277. And the point is

  278. that these plagues

  279. are coming from God.

  280. So John sees the tabernacle

  281. and he sees the angels

  282. dressed in the same apparel

  283. as Jesus Christ

  284. and he sees the four living creatures

  285. which are in the inner sanctuary

  286. of God's throne room.

  287. And then, in verse 8,

  288. he concludes,

  289. And the sanctuary

  290. was filled with smoke

  291. from the glory of God

  292. and from his power

  293. and no one could enter

  294. the sanctuary

  295. until the seven plagues

  296. of the seven angels

  297. were finished.

  298. Again, this is imagery

  299. that's coming from

  300. the Old Testament.

  301. In the Old Testament,

  302. when the people

  303. finally finished

  304. building the tabernacle,

  305. setting up that tent,

  306. then God's glory

  307. moved into it

  308. and it was filled with smoke.

  309. And then later,

  310. when Solomon finally finished

  311. building the temple,

  312. God's glory moved into it

  313. and it filled with smoke.

  314. In Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  315. when the train of God's robe

  316. came down,

  317. it filled the temple.

  318. And in Ezekiel,

  319. when Ezekiel was describing

  320. God's glory in the temple,

  321. he says there was a cloud

  322. that filled the temple.

  323. So in other words,

  324. God is there.

  325. He's there.

  326. And until his seven plagues

  327. are finished,

  328. no one can even go in.

  329. The plagues are coming

  330. from God.

  331. He's not sitting by thinking,

  332. oh boy, I hope I could do

  333. something about that.

  334. I wish I could stop that

  335. in some way.

  336. They're coming from him.

  337. They're not coming

  338. from the creatures.

  339. They're not coming

  340. from the seven angels.

  341. They're just his messengers.

  342. The plagues are coming from God

  343. and no one can stop him.

  344. No one can hold back his hand.

  345. This is God's wrath.

  346. It's his incredible power

  347. and even his own angelic servants

  348. who stand around his throne

  349. in normal times

  350. can't be in his presence

  351. because his wrath is too great.

  352. And all of this

  353. is just the introduction.

  354. Because as we get into chapter 16

  355. in the next chapter,

  356. then the seven angels

  357. begin to pour out

  358. their golden bowls

  359. of God's wrath.

  360. When the first angel

  361. pours out bowl number one,

  362. then painful sores break out

  363. and boils break out

  364. on those people

  365. who worship the beast.

  366. Then the second angel comes

  367. and pours out bowl number two

  368. and all the sea turns to blood

  369. and it kills all the creatures

  370. in the sea.

  371. God is destroying

  372. his own creation.

  373. Then the third angel

  374. pours out bowl number three

  375. and all the rivers

  376. and the springs,

  377. all the places

  378. where you might hope

  379. to find drinking water

  380. turn to blood.

  381. And the angel of God

  382. who is in charge

  383. stands there and says,

  384. these people

  385. on the earth

  386. have shed the blood

  387. of the saints

  388. and prophets.

  389. Now you, God,

  390. have given them blood

  391. to drink.

  392. Yikes.

  393. And then the fourth angel

  394. pours out bowl number four

  395. and the sun

  396. heats up

  397. and burns people

  398. with fire

  399. and scorches them

  400. with its heat.

  401. But the people

  402. don't repent.

  403. They curse God.

  404. Then the fifth angel

  405. pours out bowl number five

  406. and the earth

  407. is covered

  408. in total darkness

  409. and the people

  410. have these

  411. unbelievable burns

  412. from the sun

  413. and boils

  414. and they're thirsty

  415. and the sea

  416. stinks like blood

  417. and now they're

  418. in total darkness

  419. and it says,

  420. they gnaw

  421. at their tongues

  422. in anguish

  423. and they curse God

  424. for their pain.

  425. Then the sixth angel

  426. pours out bowl number six

  427. and the Euphrates River

  428. dries up

  429. so that all the nations

  430. of the whole earth

  431. can gather together

  432. to attack God's people.

  433. But what they don't know

  434. is that they've just

  435. made themselves

  436. a really good target

  437. and God wipes them out.

  438. They have only gathered

  439. for their own destruction.

  440. And finally,

  441. the seventh angel

  442. pours out bowl number seven

  443. and there's a great earthquake.

  444. It says,

  445. greater than any earthquake

  446. in history

  447. and the cities

  448. of the world

  449. are split apart

  450. and gigantic hailstones

  451. fall from heaven

  452. and the people

  453. underneath

  454. are cursing God

  455. because the plague

  456. is so severe.

  457. So God is pouring out

  458. his wrath on the earth

  459. and he inflicts people

  460. with painful boils

  461. and takes away

  462. their drinking water

  463. and burns them

  464. and keeps them

  465. in total darkness

  466. and then gathers them

  467. together

  468. and rips apart

  469. the earth

  470. and hurls giant

  471. hailstones down on them.

  472. This is the God

  473. who created the world.

  474. He has created people

  475. in his own image

  476. and now he is

  477. destroying them.

  478. It sounds terrible.

  479. It really does

  480. but the wrath of God

  481. is not the problem.

  482. The wrath of God

  483. is the cure.

  484. Imagine that someone

  485. who,

  486. someone visits you

  487. who grew up

  488. on a deserted island

  489. somewhere

  490. completely cut off

  491. from civilization

  492. and for some reason

  493. I don't know,

  494. I don't know why

  495. we take them

  496. on a tour

  497. of a cancer unit

  498. in a hospital.

  499. We show them

  500. rooms with needles

  501. and claustrophobic

  502. MRI machines

  503. that no one wants

  504. to get into

  505. and we show them

  506. the surgery area

  507. where people are cut open

  508. and we show them

  509. chemotherapy

  510. that makes people

  511. nauseous

  512. and weak

  513. and miserable

  514. and they just

  515. shake their head

  516. and they say

  517. this is terrible.

  518. This is terrible.

  519. Why would you do

  520. these things to someone?

  521. And we would say

  522. I know it's harsh

  523. and we're not

  524. always successful

  525. but the thing

  526. that we're attacking

  527. is worse

  528. because we're

  529. killing cancer

  530. and cancer

  531. is a terrible

  532. disease.

  533. See in some ways

  534. our extreme attempts

  535. at a cure

  536. for cancer

  537. only make sense

  538. if you know

  539. how terrible

  540. the disease is.

  541. Even though

  542. the cure seems harsh

  543. the disease

  544. is worse

  545. and we are trying

  546. to kill

  547. the cancer.

  548. God's judgment

  549. looks harsh

  550. at first glance

  551. if you think

  552. that sin

  553. is not a very big deal.

  554. If you think

  555. that sin

  556. is just a little

  557. lie

  558. or a little

  559. unkind thought

  560. then we might

  561. look at the cure

  562. and say

  563. how can God

  564. be so ferocious?

  565. I don't know

  566. if I want to serve

  567. a God

  568. of wrath

  569. like that

  570. but we may not

  571. understand the full

  572. weight of the problem

  573. because sin

  574. is a cancer

  575. that infects

  576. the heart

  577. and God

  578. offers to kill it.

  579. God offers

  580. to kill it

  581. in our hearts

  582. by the power

  583. of Jesus Christ's

  584. death and resurrection.

  585. He wants to kill it

  586. but if we say no

  587. then it starts

  588. to grow

  589. and it metastasizes

  590. until there is

  591. nothing left to do

  592. but kill the entire person.

  593. Sin is rebellion

  594. against God

  595. the creator

  596. of heaven and earth

  597. and these are

  598. unrepentant people

  599. who persist

  600. in evil

  601. and violence

  602. and systematic

  603. injustice

  604. and persecution

  605. of God's people

  606. and God is not

  607. going to allow

  608. that to continue.

  609. He is going

  610. to put a stop

  611. to it

  612. and notice

  613. that even now

  614. even now

  615. in the midst

  616. of judgment

  617. look at how

  618. these people

  619. are responding

  620. they're not

  621. responding by

  622. begging God

  623. for mercy

  624. they are responding

  625. with curses

  626. they are cursing

  627. God

  628. and rebelling

  629. against him

  630. to the very end.

  631. They would not

  632. let him kill

  633. the sin

  634. in their hearts

  635. and so he has

  636. no choice

  637. but to kill them.

  638. this is what

  639. God's people

  640. are celebrating

  641. in verses 1

  642. and 5 through 8.

  643. Now let's go back

  644. and look at the middle

  645. section of our passage

  646. in verses 2 through 4

  647. and think about

  648. why they're celebrating.

  649. In verse 2

  650. John looks

  651. into heaven

  652. and it says

  653. These are God's people

  654. who have given

  655. their lives

  656. in faithfulness

  657. to him.

  658. The reason they're

  659. in heaven

  660. is because they have

  661. already been killed

  662. for their faith.

  663. We have seen

  664. this group before

  665. in Revelation

  666. in Revelation 11

  667. it says

  668. when they finish

  669. their testimony

  670. the beast

  671. that rises

  672. from the bottomless pit

  673. will make war

  674. on them

  675. and conquer them

  676. and kill them.

  677. So from an earthly

  678. perspective

  679. it looks like

  680. the beast

  681. has already won

  682. that it has conquered

  683. them.

  684. But then we learn

  685. in chapter 12

  686. in the next chapter

  687. that they have

  688. conquered the beast

  689. that all is not

  690. as it seems

  691. they have conquered

  692. by the blood

  693. of the lamb

  694. and the word

  695. of their testimony.

  696. They persevered

  697. in their faith.

  698. even though

  699. they were persecuted

  700. and killed

  701. and when they died

  702. they were victorious

  703. because the blood

  704. of Jesus

  705. saved them.

  706. Notice in this passage

  707. here in verse 2

  708. notice that it tells us

  709. two times

  710. that they are standing

  711. on the sea of glass.

  712. That tells us

  713. two important things.

  714. First of all

  715. we saw back

  716. in Revelation 4

  717. that the sea of glass

  718. is before God's throne.

  719. So it tells us

  720. that these saints

  721. these martyrs

  722. who have died

  723. for their faith

  724. are in the presence

  725. of God.

  726. The second thing

  727. it tells us

  728. is that everything

  729. is peaceful there.

  730. In the Old Testament

  731. the sea

  732. is considered

  733. to be frightening

  734. and unpredictable

  735. and dangerous.

  736. Think about the little boats

  737. that the people

  738. rode around on.

  739. I mean it's a dangerous thing.

  740. It's unpredictable.

  741. But this sea

  742. is not like that.

  743. This sea

  744. is a sea of glass.

  745. It is completely still.

  746. There is no turbulence

  747. or trouble at all.

  748. Here we are

  749. at the end of all things.

  750. He's already

  751. brought the seals.

  752. He's already brought

  753. the trumpets.

  754. He's about to pour out

  755. the bowls.

  756. It's a time of judgment

  757. and God's wrath

  758. and smoke

  759. is filling the temple

  760. on the one hand

  761. but on the other hand

  762. everything

  763. is completely peaceful.

  764. There is no stress.

  765. There is no anxiety

  766. at all.

  767. God has everything

  768. under control.

  769. There is total safety

  770. and total peace.

  771. God never sits

  772. in heaven

  773. no matter what

  774. the circumstances

  775. he never sits in heaven

  776. chewing on his fingernails

  777. or wondering

  778. what he's going to do next.

  779. Actually that's worth

  780. remembering.

  781. Think about that

  782. in your own life.

  783. When you

  784. are going through

  785. incredible hardship

  786. no matter how stressed

  787. you are

  788. in heaven

  789. there is total peace

  790. with God.

  791. He has complete

  792. control of the situation.

  793. These martyred saints

  794. are holding harps

  795. to sing the song

  796. in verse 3.

  797. It's called

  798. the song of Moses

  799. to connect it back

  800. again to the Old Testament

  801. when the Israelites

  802. sang a song

  803. of victory

  804. after God

  805. saved them

  806. from the Egyptian army.

  807. Remember

  808. after they came

  809. out of Egypt

  810. Pharaoh and his army

  811. were chasing them

  812. through the desert

  813. and they were cut off

  814. because there was

  815. a large body of water

  816. in front of them.

  817. At the last minute

  818. God opened

  819. the Red Sea

  820. and the Israelites

  821. hurried across

  822. on dry ground

  823. and then God waited

  824. until the Pharaoh

  825. and the Egyptian army

  826. were in the middle

  827. of the water

  828. and then he let

  829. the water close

  830. and he drowned

  831. them all.

  832. He killed them.

  833. And by killing

  834. the Egyptian army

  835. God saved his people.

  836. And so the people

  837. respond.

  838. Moses and the people

  839. sing a song

  840. to the Lord.

  841. They say

  842. I will sing

  843. to the Lord

  844. for he

  845. has triumphed

  846. gloriously

  847. the horse

  848. and rider

  849. he has thrown

  850. into the sea.

  851. And now we have

  852. another song.

  853. It's a song of Moses

  854. because it's a victory song

  855. but it's also a song

  856. of the Lamb

  857. because it's a song

  858. of God's great

  859. deliverance

  860. in Christ.

  861. In this victory song

  862. the saints

  863. are celebrating

  864. three things

  865. about God's

  866. coming judgment

  867. and they're also

  868. giving three reasons

  869. why.

  870. So let's look

  871. at those briefly.

  872. First

  873. in this song

  874. they say

  875. great and amazing

  876. are your deeds

  877. O Lord

  878. God the Almighty.

  879. God's acts

  880. of judgment

  881. are powerful

  882. and incredible.

  883. He is God

  884. the Almighty.

  885. He is a powerful God.

  886. You know

  887. in history

  888. many times

  889. God has not

  890. intervened.

  891. Maybe there have

  892. been times

  893. when we've wondered

  894. why

  895. why doesn't God

  896. do something

  897. about that evil.

  898. Why doesn't

  899. He stop

  900. those people

  901. from doing that?

  902. Why

  903. if He is

  904. if He's in heaven

  905. watching

  906. why does He

  907. let that go on

  908. for so long?

  909. Maybe we wonder

  910. is it because

  911. God really

  912. can't do anything?

  913. No.

  914. That's not true.

  915. He has

  916. incredible power.

  917. He has been

  918. waiting

  919. and now

  920. He will bring

  921. His powerful

  922. anger on the earth

  923. like no one

  924. has ever seen.

  925. No one

  926. will question

  927. His ability.

  928. He is the King

  929. the Almighty

  930. the Lord

  931. of armies.

  932. Second

  933. not only

  934. is God

  935. powerful

  936. but at the end

  937. of verse 3

  938. they say

  939. He is just

  940. and true.

  941. Just

  942. and true

  943. are your ways

  944. O King

  945. of the nations.

  946. In other words

  947. God is not

  948. only powerful

  949. He is also

  950. good.

  951. His great

  952. and amazing

  953. deeds

  954. at the beginning

  955. of verse 3

  956. are not just

  957. demonstrations

  958. of power

  959. to impress us

  960. they are

  961. expressions

  962. of His character.

  963. God doesn't

  964. desire that

  965. anyone

  966. should perish.

  967. He resists

  968. judgment.

  969. He waits.

  970. He waits

  971. for people

  972. to respond

  973. to Him

  974. in faith

  975. and repentance

  976. sometimes

  977. until the

  978. very end

  979. but when

  980. He does

  981. judge

  982. it is

  983. just

  984. and right.

  985. When

  986. He pours

  987. out His

  988. wrath

  989. on the earth

  990. and burns

  991. His enemies

  992. and takes

  993. away their

  994. drinking water

  995. and brings

  996. total darkness

  997. and hurls

  998. hailstones

  999. on them

  1000. He is being

  1001. just

  1002. and it's

  1003. because

  1004. He is

  1005. righteous.

  1006. Maybe

  1007. you've

  1008. wondered

  1009. why

  1010. doesn't

  1011. God

  1012. do

  1013. something

  1014. about

  1015. that

  1016. injustice

  1017. that I'm

  1018. reading about

  1019. on the news?

  1020. When

  1021. that person

  1022. was hurting

  1023. me

  1024. why

  1025. didn't

  1026. God

  1027. intervene

  1028. and stop

  1029. them?

  1030. Why

  1031. is He

  1032. letting

  1033. this go

  1034. on for

  1035. so long?

  1036. Maybe

  1037. we wonder

  1038. He might

  1039. be powerful

  1040. but maybe

  1041. He isn't

  1042. good.

  1043. Maybe

  1044. He sees

  1045. evil

  1046. and He

  1047. just

  1048. doesn't

  1049. think

  1050. it's

  1051. a very

  1052. big

  1053. deal.

  1054. That's

  1055. not

  1056. true.

  1057. He

  1058. sees

  1059. and He

  1060. cares

  1061. and He

  1062. has been

  1063. waiting

  1064. but now

  1065. He will

  1066. act.

  1067. He will

  1068. do what

  1069. is right

  1070. and true

  1071. by pouring

  1072. out His

  1073. judgment

  1074. on the

  1075. earth

  1076. and setting

  1077. everything

  1078. right.

  1079. The third

  1080. response to

  1081. God's judgment

  1082. comes at the

  1083. beginning of

  1084. verse 4.

  1085. The saints

  1086. say,

  1087. who will

  1088. not fear

  1089. O Lord

  1090. and glorify

  1091. your name?

  1092. This is a rhetorical

  1093. question with

  1094. an obvious

  1095. emphatic

  1096. answer.

  1097. Everyone

  1098. will fear

  1099. and glorify

  1100. God when

  1101. they see

  1102. His angels

  1103. pour out

  1104. the bowls

  1105. of wrath.

  1106. People

  1107. have not

  1108. always taken

  1109. Jesus very

  1110. seriously.

  1111. The Roman

  1112. soldiers

  1113. spat on

  1114. Him.

  1115. The Jewish

  1116. leaders

  1117. mocked

  1118. Him.

  1119. People

  1120. use His

  1121. name as a

  1122. swear word.

  1123. He sometimes

  1124. flips through

  1125. the channel

  1126. and you

  1127. see Jesus

  1128. there as a

  1129. ridiculous

  1130. cartoon on

  1131. some television

  1132. show.

  1133. But when

  1134. He pours out

  1135. His wrath

  1136. on the

  1137. earth,

  1138. everyone,

  1139. everyone

  1140. will know

  1141. who He

  1142. is.

  1143. Everyone

  1144. will give

  1145. Him the

  1146. honor that

  1147. He is due

  1148. because He

  1149. will show

  1150. Himself to

  1151. be the

  1152. mighty God

  1153. with unlimited

  1154. power and

  1155. unlimited

  1156. good.

  1157. God

  1158. will

  1159. give us

  1160. a victory

  1161. song,

  1162. a celebration,

  1163. and they

  1164. say,

  1165. God is

  1166. powerful,

  1167. God is

  1168. good and

  1169. just and

  1170. true,

  1171. and everyone

  1172. will give

  1173. Him the

  1174. glory that

  1175. He deserves.

  1176. And then

  1177. they give us

  1178. three further

  1179. reasons,

  1180. three more

  1181. reasons to

  1182. celebrate.

  1183. If you

  1184. look at the

  1185. end of

  1186. verse 4,

  1187. there are

  1188. three occurrences

  1189. of the word

  1190. for here,

  1191. kind of the

  1192. word because,

  1193. and I think

  1194. probably only

  1195. two of them

  1196. are translated

  1197. in most of

  1198. the English

  1199. versions.

  1200. It says,

  1201. for you alone

  1202. are holy,

  1203. for all the

  1204. nations will

  1205. worship you,

  1206. and for your

  1207. righteous acts

  1208. have been

  1209. revealed.

  1210. Three reasons.

  1211. For you alone

  1212. are holy.

  1213. God is set

  1214. apart from

  1215. the world and

  1216. He stands

  1217. above it,

  1218. outside of it,

  1219. He cannot

  1220. look on

  1221. evil.

  1222. And so now

  1223. He is

  1224. destroying it.

  1225. For all

  1226. nations will

  1227. come and

  1228. worship you.

  1229. Remember in

  1230. verse 3,

  1231. they said,

  1232. He is the

  1233. King of

  1234. the nations.

  1235. This picks

  1236. up on an

  1237. important theme

  1238. in the Old

  1239. Testament

  1240. prophets,

  1241. that those

  1242. among the

  1243. nations who

  1244. submit to

  1245. God will

  1246. stream to

  1247. Jerusalem at

  1248. the end,

  1249. come to

  1250. the New

  1251. Jerusalem to

  1252. worship Him.

  1253. It says,

  1254. all nations,

  1255. because everyone

  1256. is invited,

  1257. all people

  1258. from every

  1259. land,

  1260. from every

  1261. language,

  1262. God has

  1263. always intended

  1264. for His

  1265. salvation to

  1266. go to the

  1267. ends of the

  1268. earth.

  1269. When you

  1270. know,

  1271. when you

  1272. see this,

  1273. when you

  1274. know that

  1275. God is

  1276. powerful and

  1277. good,

  1278. and He is

  1279. bringing justice

  1280. on the earth,

  1281. then you have

  1282. the opportunity

  1283. to submit to

  1284. Him and to

  1285. come and

  1286. join Him,

  1287. and that is

  1288. what He wants.

  1289. And then

  1290. finally,

  1291. they say,

  1292. for your

  1293. righteous acts

  1294. have been

  1295. revealed.

  1296. Some people

  1297. might say,

  1298. I don't know

  1299. if I want to

  1300. worship a God

  1301. who judges

  1302. like this,

  1303. but these

  1304. martyred saints

  1305. in heaven are

  1306. saying,

  1307. we worship

  1308. God because

  1309. He judges

  1310. like this.

  1311. He is

  1312. righteous,

  1313. and He does

  1314. what is good.

  1315. It is a good

  1316. thing for God

  1317. to judge evil.

  1318. It is right.

  1319. It is because

  1320. He is good

  1321. and loving

  1322. that He will

  1323. not let evil

  1324. prevail forever.

  1325. So I think

  1326. one way to

  1327. sum up this

  1328. passage is

  1329. to say that

  1330. God's ultimate

  1331. judgment is

  1332. something to

  1333. celebrate.

  1334. God's ultimate

  1335. judgment is

  1336. something to

  1337. celebrate.

  1338. Let's talk

  1339. briefly about

  1340. three points

  1341. of application

  1342. for this.

  1343. Number one,

  1344. celebrating God's

  1345. judgment increases

  1346. our loyalty to

  1347. Him.

  1348. It increases

  1349. our loyalty

  1350. to Him.

  1351. Is it wrong

  1352. to celebrate

  1353. the suffering

  1354. and destruction

  1355. of the world?

  1356. Aren't we

  1357. supposed to

  1358. love the

  1359. people of the

  1360. world just

  1361. like God

  1362. does?

  1363. Yes.

  1364. Yes.

  1365. But there's a

  1366. tension.

  1367. If you're feeling

  1368. that tension,

  1369. it's because

  1370. that tension

  1371. exists in the

  1372. Bible.

  1373. On the one

  1374. hand,

  1375. we know that

  1376. God loves

  1377. the world

  1378. and sent

  1379. His Son

  1380. to save

  1381. it as a

  1382. ransom.

  1383. It says in

  1384. John 3.16,

  1385. for God

  1386. so loved

  1387. the world.

  1388. And He

  1389. wants His

  1390. people to

  1391. live in this

  1392. world as

  1393. good citizens.

  1394. He says in

  1395. Jeremiah 29.7,

  1396. seek the

  1397. welfare of the

  1398. city where I

  1399. have sent you

  1400. into exile.

  1401. You're living

  1402. there temporarily.

  1403. Seek its

  1404. welfare.

  1405. That applies

  1406. to us as

  1407. well.

  1408. Paul says in

  1409. 1 Timothy 2,

  1410. pray for

  1411. your civil

  1412. authorities.

  1413. Live peaceful

  1414. and quiet

  1415. lives.

  1416. But on the

  1417. other hand,

  1418. the world is

  1419. opposed to

  1420. God and

  1421. to His

  1422. people.

  1423. In John

  1424. 15.19,

  1425. Jesus says,

  1426. if you were

  1427. of the

  1428. world,

  1429. the world

  1430. would love

  1431. you as

  1432. its own.

  1433. But because

  1434. you are not

  1435. of the world,

  1436. but I chose

  1437. you out of

  1438. the world,

  1439. therefore the

  1440. world hates

  1441. you.

  1442. And in

  1443. 1 John 2.15,

  1444. He says,

  1445. do not love

  1446. the world or

  1447. the things in

  1448. the world.

  1449. If anyone

  1450. loves the

  1451. world, the

  1452. love of the

  1453. Father is not

  1454. in him.

  1455. If we love

  1456. our sin,

  1457. if we love

  1458. our sinful

  1459. world,

  1460. God,

  1461. if we

  1462. assimilate

  1463. and we

  1464. consider this

  1465. to be our

  1466. home,

  1467. if we adopt

  1468. the mindset

  1469. that this is

  1470. the good

  1471. life and

  1472. we're unclear

  1473. about who

  1474. it is that

  1475. we really

  1476. belong to,

  1477. and we

  1478. lose our

  1479. sense of

  1480. true citizenship,

  1481. then we

  1482. will find it

  1483. difficult to

  1484. celebrate the

  1485. destruction of

  1486. the world.

  1487. But when we

  1488. are properly

  1489. aligned with

  1490. God,

  1491. and we

  1492. love the

  1493. same things

  1494. that he

  1495. loves,

  1496. and we

  1497. hate the

  1498. same things

  1499. that he

  1500. hates,

  1501. then we

  1502. will love

  1503. people.

  1504. We will

  1505. love the

  1506. worst of

  1507. sinners,

  1508. because we

  1509. also were

  1510. the worst

  1511. of sinners.

  1512. We will

  1513. love them,

  1514. but we

  1515. will also

  1516. love God's

  1517. glory and

  1518. his victory.

  1519. We love

  1520. it when

  1521. God destroys

  1522. evil and

  1523. stops

  1524. evildoers

  1525. from what

  1526. they do.

  1527. Listen to

  1528. this quote

  1529. from Martin

  1530. Luther,

  1531. the

  1532. reformer.

  1533. He says,

  1534. we should

  1535. pray,

  1536. we should

  1537. pray that

  1538. our enemies

  1539. be converted

  1540. and become

  1541. our friends.

  1542. We should

  1543. pray for

  1544. them,

  1545. and if

  1546. not,

  1547. that their

  1548. doing and

  1549. designing be

  1550. bound to

  1551. fail and

  1552. have no

  1553. success,

  1554. and that

  1555. their persons

  1556. perish rather

  1557. than the

  1558. gospel and

  1559. the kingdom

  1560. of Christ.

  1561. God's

  1562. judgment

  1563. creates a

  1564. little bit

  1565. of a

  1566. hard edge,

  1567. doesn't

  1568. it?

  1569. It's a

  1570. little bit

  1571. of a

  1572. hard edge

  1573. there that

  1574. forces us

  1575. to choose

  1576. our side.

  1577. And when

  1578. we celebrate,

  1579. that helps

  1580. us to

  1581. choose a

  1582. side and

  1583. to grow

  1584. in our

  1585. loyalty to

  1586. God.

  1587. Second,

  1588. celebrating

  1589. God's

  1590. judgment

  1591. in the

  1592. future

  1593. helps us

  1594. to persevere

  1595. now when

  1596. things get

  1597. hard.

  1598. God's

  1599. love.

  1600. The book

  1601. of Revelation

  1602. is written

  1603. to a

  1604. church that's

  1605. under attack.

  1606. For a long

  1607. time, in

  1608. this country,

  1609. we have had

  1610. a lot of

  1611. peace and

  1612. a lot of

  1613. freedom,

  1614. and so we

  1615. have to use

  1616. our imaginations

  1617. a little bit,

  1618. although things

  1619. are heating up

  1620. a bit now.

  1621. But like the

  1622. saints in

  1623. Revelation 6,

  1624. we also ask,

  1625. how long

  1626. until you

  1627. judge?

  1628. How long

  1629. will God

  1630. let the

  1631. church be

  1632. persecuted?

  1633. And right now

  1634. he's waiting,

  1635. and we have

  1636. to wait too.

  1637. But someday

  1638. he will pour

  1639. out his

  1640. wrath on

  1641. the earth

  1642. and bring

  1643. terrible

  1644. judgment,

  1645. and when

  1646. God's

  1647. enemies are

  1648. destroyed,

  1649. God's

  1650. people will

  1651. finally be

  1652. safe.

  1653. The people

  1654. in our

  1655. passage who

  1656. are celebrating

  1657. God's

  1658. judgment have

  1659. already

  1660. persevered.

  1661. They have

  1662. already clung

  1663. to their

  1664. faith and

  1665. clung to

  1666. their relationship

  1667. with Jesus

  1668. Christ,

  1669. even though it

  1670. has cost

  1671. them their

  1672. lives.

  1673. They have

  1674. already died

  1675. for him,

  1676. but it was

  1677. worth it.

  1678. Their

  1679. suffering was

  1680. worth it

  1681. because now

  1682. they stand

  1683. in God's

  1684. presence and

  1685. cheer him

  1686. on as he

  1687. puts down

  1688. evil and

  1689. destroys his

  1690. enemies,

  1691. and we also

  1692. must persevere.

  1693. We must hold

  1694. on to our

  1695. faith no matter

  1696. what.

  1697. We also have

  1698. to be willing

  1699. to suffer and

  1700. die for Jesus.

  1701. And you know

  1702. what?

  1703. This celebration

  1704. in Revelation 15

  1705. helps.

  1706. It helps.

  1707. Because it's like

  1708. we know that

  1709. there's a party

  1710. that has already

  1711. started,

  1712. and we

  1713. will be

  1714. there soon.

  1715. We know

  1716. how this

  1717. story turns

  1718. out.

  1719. Any discomfort

  1720. or suffering

  1721. that we

  1722. experience for

  1723. Jesus now

  1724. is going to

  1725. be worth it

  1726. because we

  1727. know that

  1728. someday there

  1729. will be a

  1730. great celebration

  1731. as God

  1732. puts everything

  1733. right.

  1734. Number three,

  1735. it is not too

  1736. late to join

  1737. the celebration.

  1738. God's people

  1739. say in verse

  1740. four,

  1741. for all nations

  1742. will come and

  1743. worship you.

  1744. It's interesting

  1745. that even here

  1746. in the midst

  1747. of judgment,

  1748. even here

  1749. when the people

  1750. being judged

  1751. are cursing

  1752. God,

  1753. not everyone

  1754. is being judged

  1755. and not everyone

  1756. is cursing him.

  1757. Some from the

  1758. nations are coming

  1759. to Jerusalem

  1760. to worship him

  1761. as he deserves.

  1762. And so there

  1763. is an implicit

  1764. call here

  1765. in the passage

  1766. to respond

  1767. to this future

  1768. knowledge

  1769. with repentance

  1770. and faith.

  1771. God kills

  1772. evildoers,

  1773. and when he

  1774. does that,

  1775. it is right

  1776. and good,

  1777. but he doesn't

  1778. want to do

  1779. that.

  1780. He wants

  1781. to take you

  1782. into surgery.

  1783. He wants

  1784. to kill

  1785. the sin

  1786. that lies

  1787. in your heart.

  1788. He wants

  1789. to kill it

  1790. by the power

  1791. of Jesus.

  1792. He knows

  1793. that if he

  1794. doesn't,

  1795. it will grow

  1796. and metastasize

  1797. and you will

  1798. be lost.

  1799. It has

  1800. to be killed,

  1801. but the only

  1802. cure

  1803. is the power

  1804. of Jesus'

  1805. death and

  1806. resurrection.

  1807. You might

  1808. think to

  1809. yourself,

  1810. it sounds

  1811. like you're

  1812. urging me

  1813. to accept

  1814. Jesus so

  1815. that I

  1816. escape his

  1817. anger.

  1818. Yeah,

  1819. that's right.

  1820. You might

  1821. say,

  1822. I don't know

  1823. if being

  1824. afraid of

  1825. God's judgment

  1826. is a good

  1827. reason to

  1828. follow Jesus.

  1829. That just

  1830. sounds inappropriate

  1831. for some

  1832. reason.

  1833. No,

  1834. it's not.

  1835. It's a

  1836. perfectly

  1837. good reason.

  1838. That's what

  1839. this passage

  1840. is saying.

  1841. God is

  1842. going to

  1843. pour out

  1844. his wrath

  1845. and he

  1846. is going

  1847. to inflict

  1848. terrible

  1849. suffering

  1850. and death

  1851. and he

  1852. will be

  1853. right to

  1854. do so

  1855. when he

  1856. does.

  1857. But he's

  1858. offering now

  1859. for you

  1860. to defect,

  1861. to join

  1862. him and

  1863. to submit

  1864. to him

  1865. and to

  1866. allow him

  1867. to perform

  1868. that surgery

  1869. and then

  1870. to live

  1871. with him

  1872. as his

  1873. child

  1874. in peace

  1875. and joy

  1876. forever

  1877. and ever.

  1878. It is a

  1879. gracious offer.

  1880. It is an

  1881. offer of

  1882. love.

  1883. But there

  1884. will come

  1885. a time

  1886. when it

  1887. is too

  1888. late for

  1889. that.

  1890. And so

  1891. this morning

  1892. if you

  1893. feel uneasy

  1894. about where

  1895. you stand

  1896. with God,

  1897. I urge you

  1898. come and

  1899. talk to me,

  1900. to Mike,

  1901. to one of

  1902. the other

  1903. pastors or

  1904. elders,

  1905. to the

  1906. person sitting

  1907. next to

  1908. you.

  1909. We would

  1910. love to

  1911. help you

  1912. know for

  1913. sure that

  1914. you can

  1915. have peace

  1916. with God.

  1917. So God's

  1918. judgment is

  1919. something to

  1920. celebrate.

  1921. It encourages

  1922. us to

  1923. reinforce our

  1924. loyalty with

  1925. God.

  1926. It helps us

  1927. to persevere

  1928. while we

  1929. wait,

  1930. and it urges

  1931. us to join

  1932. him while we

  1933. still can.

  1934. Let's pray.

  1935. Let's pray.

  1936. Father, as

  1937. we work

  1938. through this

  1939. passage, it

  1940. raises mixed

  1941. emotions in

  1942. us.

  1943. Because we

  1944. know that we

  1945. are the

  1946. rightful targets

  1947. of your

  1948. wrath, and

  1949. we grieve our

  1950. own sin that

  1951. causes us to

  1952. be enemies

  1953. with you.

  1954. So we

  1955. grieve that

  1956. sin that you

  1957. hate.

  1958. And we

  1959. also love

  1960. our family,

  1961. and our

  1962. friends, and

  1963. our neighbors.

  1964. On the one

  1965. hand, we

  1966. celebrate your

  1967. right judgment.

  1968. On the other

  1969. hand, we

  1970. love them.

  1971. And we

  1972. want you to

  1973. be victorious.

  1974. And so all

  1975. we can say

  1976. as we work

  1977. through these

  1978. conflicted

  1979. things is

  1980. that we

  1981. are dependent

  1982. on your

  1983. mercy.

  1984. We have

  1985. nothing to

  1986. boast about.

  1987. We have

  1988. nothing to

  1989. offer to

  1990. you.

  1991. There's no

  1992. reason for

  1993. us to be

  1994. a part of

  1995. your people

  1996. other than

  1997. your grace

  1998. that you've

  1999. shown to

  2000. us in

  2001. Jesus.

  2002. We love

  2003. you only

  2004. because you

  2005. loved us

  2006. first.

  2007. So Lord, we

  2008. thank you for

  2009. your grace.

  2010. We thank you

  2011. for the
