  1. Surprises. There are basically two kinds of surprises. There are the welcome surprises,

  2. and then there are the unwelcome surprises. Welcome surprises are you get your taxes done,

  3. and you've got a sweet refund. Do I have an amen? Or if you're playing Monopoly and you fall on the

  4. chance thing, you get the card that says, go to go and collect $200. That's a welcome surprise.

  5. An unwelcome surprise is when you have your taxes done and you owe money more than you expected and

  6. maybe more than you planned on, yours truly. Or you're playing Monopoly and you fall on the chance

  7. thing and you get the card that says, inheritance tax, pay $200. That's an unwelcome surprise.

  8. But perhaps the greatest surprise of all is Easter. Easter is the annual celebration

  9. of the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and it's a game changer.

  10. All throughout the ages, since the first century, the Christian church has been proclaiming that

  11. Jesus Christ is alive today and changing lives. He is alive. He's risen. He's risen indeed.

  12. Now for many of you in the room, when we started the service and you heard me say, he is risen,

  13. you responded, he is risen indeed with every fiber of your being because you have come to know the

  14. risen Jesus personally. You know him. You have experienced his mercy and his grace.

  15. He has changed you. He has changed you. He continues to change you for his name's sake.

  16. The first time you heard the good news of Christ's death and resurrection and you had ears to hear,

  17. you welcomed it. The surprise of the resurrection was welcomed good news because you realized at that

  18. moment Jesus had died and was raised for you. But let's just be honest, even if you're a Christian,

  19. you can have some doubts, you can have some hard experiences where you're condemning yourself for

  20. sins you've committed. And maybe even if you just remain silent about Jesus, well,

  21. got a surprise for you today. So there's some in this room that give a hearty yes and amen

  22. to this surprise news of the resurrection of Jesus. It's welcome news. But for others of us in this room,

  23. it may not be as welcome. You may be skeptical about the resurrection. And that's not necessarily a bad

  24. thing. It's just that you're like, hey, dead people don't come back to life three days later. That's

  25. impossible according to the laws of nature. Well, maybe there's a surprise for you this morning.

  26. I'm glad that you're here. Maybe you're not skeptical. Maybe you're just a little bit more

  27. pragmatic. So your thinking goes something like this. Hey, you know what? I'm a pretty busy person.

  28. I'm working hard during the week. And if I'm going to plan my Sunday morning, I got stuff to do.

  29. And in that stuff to do, Jesus just doesn't fall into the mix. It's not that I don't believe he

  30. existed. He's just not that important to me. Well, for the pragmatists in the room,

  31. I have a surprise for you this morning. And then there are the searchers among us.

  32. Every three to five years, you find yourself giving yourself fully to something new.

  33. Maybe when you were in school, it was your grades. Maybe it turned into environmentalism.

  34. Maybe it became the cause of sex trafficking. Maybe it became your career. Maybe it came raising

  35. children, having a family. But every three to five years, you're turning to something new in order to

  36. scratch that itch deep inside of you. I've got some good news for you this morning.

  37. And then there are the guilt ridden among us.

  38. You have deep levels of shame and guilt for real pain that has been inflicted on you or you have

  39. inflicted upon others. It's real. And so there are things that you have experienced that you are so ashamed of

  40. that you will never tell anyone until all the way up to your death.

  41. Your greatest fear is having these shameful happenings exposed.

  42. So here's how you get by. You find ways to hide the shame and numb the guilt.

  43. And in so doing, you keep people just far enough away.

  44. We'll have good news for you this morning.

  45. Someone already sees it all

  46. and wants to come close.

  47. Jesus died and was raised

  48. for skeptics, for pragmatists,

  49. for searchers,

  50. and for the guilt ridden.

  51. He came for you and me.

  52. And not only did he die,

  53. he was raised.

  54. And this

  55. resurrection

  56. is to be a welcomed surprise

  57. announcement.

  58. Jesus is alive today.

  59. Changing lives.

  60. We heard that from Billy Johnson already.

  61. So here's how we're going to move forward this morning.

  62. I'm going to walk you through

  63. an eyewitness account of the resurrection of Jesus.

  64. It's given to us by a guy named Luke.

  65. The Gospel of Luke.

  66. He was a first century doctor

  67. and he was a very careful historian.

  68. And you'll see that as we go through this account.

  69. And what this eyewitness account claims

  70. is that Jesus was dead

  71. and now he's alive

  72. changing people.

  73. And you're going to see it as a series

  74. of surprises.

  75. And after we're done walking through that,

  76. I'm going to summarize it

  77. and then I'm going to say,

  78. here's some things to think about

  79. on your way out.

  80. So let's walk through Luke's account

  81. in Luke 24.

  82. Danielle read a good chunk of it.

  83. She read through verse 7.

  84. I'm going to walk you through chapter 24

  85. verses 1 through 12.

  86. In your Black Pew Bible,

  87. I think it's page 1051

  88. or pretty close to that.

  89. Luke 24.

  90. So here's how we're going to walk through.

  91. We're going to see first a scene

  92. that should not surprise you.

  93. And then we're going to move to another scene

  94. where it's a tomb surprise.

  95. Wait on it.

  96. And then an angelic surprise.

  97. Wait on it.

  98. And then a people surprise.

  99. A series of surprises that culminate.

  100. It's all about Jesus is alive.

  101. So 24.1, we read,

  102. but on the first day of the week

  103. at early dawn,

  104. they went to the tomb

  105. taking the spices they had prepared.

  106. Who is this they?

  107. Well, Luke tells us.

  108. Look at verse 10.

  109. Now it was Mary Magdalene

  110. and Joanna

  111. and Mary the mother of James

  112. and the other women

  113. with them

  114. who went back to the apostles.

  115. They're on their way to the tomb.

  116. And the reason why

  117. they're on the way to the tomb

  118. is hinted at

  119. because they're carrying spices.

  120. They're burial spices.

  121. So here's what has happened.

  122. Jesus died on a Friday.

  123. And then came Saturday,

  124. which for the Jews at the time

  125. is called the Sabbath.

  126. It's the last day of the week.

  127. Nobody worked on the Sabbath.

  128. And then came Sunday,

  129. the first day of the week.

  130. And so Jesus was crucified on a Friday.

  131. These women didn't have time

  132. to prepare their body.

  133. They couldn't prepare his body

  134. for burial

  135. because it was a kind of a work.

  136. So they had to wait out the Sabbath.

  137. And then first thing on Sunday morning,

  138. they're back to the tomb

  139. in order to prepare his body.

  140. But here's what you need to know

  141. about these women.

  142. These women

  143. have been traveling with Jesus.

  144. They're from Galilee.

  145. Some of them have been

  146. with Jesus for three years.

  147. They had witnessed his miracles.

  148. They had heard his teaching.

  149. They had experienced him personally.

  150. They knew the sound of his voice.

  151. They themselves were helped

  152. fund his itinerant ministry.

  153. They were committed.

  154. And so these are the same women

  155. who just days before

  156. had watched Jesus be crucified.

  157. They watched him die.

  158. They watched his body

  159. be taken down from the cross.

  160. And they watched,

  161. chapter 23, verse 55,

  162. Luke is very specific.

  163. They see where his body was laid.

  164. They saw the tomb.

  165. They know where he's at.

  166. And so these women

  167. are going to the tomb.

  168. And it shouldn't surprise you

  169. that these women

  170. are grieving.

  171. And not just grieving,

  172. their hope has been crushed.

  173. Because this was the guy

  174. just a week before

  175. Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem

  176. to crowds singing his praises

  177. like he's a returning king.

  178. They were thinking,

  179. this is the Messiah,

  180. the Christ,

  181. the long-awaited one.

  182. But now their hopes

  183. have been crushed.

  184. It's all changed.

  185. He's dead.

  186. And so maybe

  187. you know what it's like

  188. to have the very thing

  189. that you were banking

  190. all your hopes on

  191. pulled right out

  192. from underneath you.

  193. That's what these women

  194. are experiencing.

  195. So it's no surprise here.

  196. These women are grieving.

  197. They're crushed.

  198. It's hopeless.

  199. They're just going to do

  200. what they need to do

  201. to prepare his body.

  202. They're fully expecting

  203. to find the dead body of Jesus

  204. where they had left it

  205. on Friday.

  206. So no surprise here.

  207. Now we start entering

  208. the surprises

  209. with verse 2.

  210. And what we first run into

  211. are some tomb surprises.

  212. You ready for this?

  213. Look at verse 2.

  214. And they found the stone

  215. rolled away.

  216. So they walk up

  217. to where the tomb was.

  218. And remember,

  219. they knew where it was,

  220. 2355.

  221. And the stone

  222. had been rolled away

  223. in front of the entrance

  224. of the tomb.

  225. It would have been

  226. hundreds of pounds.

  227. The only way to move

  228. a stone like that

  229. is by rolling it downhill

  230. or by levering it.

  231. And what it was for

  232. was to block

  233. the entrance of the tomb

  234. so no animals

  235. could get inside,

  236. so no grave robbers

  237. could get in there.

  238. And so they walk up

  239. in surprise.

  240. The stones rolled away.

  241. Here's how they were feeling.

  242. Just imagine you go home

  243. after the service today

  244. and whether it's a house

  245. or an apartment,

  246. you left your house

  247. with a front door lock

  248. and you come to your house.

  249. Front door is wide open.

  250. Surprise!

  251. That's a sample

  252. of how they're feeling

  253. right now.

  254. What's going on?

  255. It's an alarming surprise.

  256. And then we have

  257. another surprise

  258. in verse 3.

  259. Not only is this tomb open,

  260. they go into the tomb

  261. and they do not find

  262. the body of the Lord Jesus.

  263. It's an open

  264. and empty tomb.

  265. Which is even more surprising

  266. than it being open.

  267. So,

  268. in verse 4,

  269. we read,

  270. while they were perplexed

  271. about this,

  272. it was confusing to them.

  273. You'd be confused too.

  274. You're coming to the tomb

  275. because the one

  276. that you'd set your hope on

  277. has died.

  278. You just want to

  279. put spices on his body

  280. and give an honorable death,

  281. burial,

  282. and you walk up

  283. and all of a sudden

  284. the thing's open

  285. and there's no body inside.

  286. Where's the body?

  287. Who took the body?

  288. And why would anybody

  289. take his body?

  290. The tomb surprise

  291. is a confusing surprise.

  292. surprise.

  293. And if you were there,

  294. you would have been

  295. as confused

  296. as they were as well.

  297. And then something happens.

  298. More surprises.

  299. An angelic surprise.

  300. And this angelic surprise

  301. is a surprising appearance

  302. as well as a surprising question

  303. as well as a surprising connection.

  304. So look at the surprising appearance.

  305. Verse 4,

  306. While they were perplexed about this,

  307. behold,

  308. two men in dazzling apparel

  309. stood by them.

  310. It's a surprising appearance

  311. of two angels.

  312. And you know they're angels

  313. because of their dazzling apparel.

  314. They were shining.

  315. This word dazzle

  316. is the same word

  317. that describes Jesus'

  318. radiant glory

  319. at his transfiguration.

  320. They were radiating light.

  321. And notice,

  322. they're radiating light

  323. next to these women

  324. in the tomb.

  325. Literally,

  326. they are bringing light

  327. into the dark tomb.

  328. They're bringing clarity

  329. to their confusion.

  330. Angels,

  331. when they come on the scene,

  332. they make announcements.

  333. We see that in the gospel of Luke

  334. that the birth of Jesus

  335. is announced by angels

  336. at the beginning of the book.

  337. And here at the end

  338. of the gospel of Luke,

  339. we have angels

  340. announcing his resurrection.

  341. And so,

  342. we have the surprise appearance

  343. of these angels

  344. and the women.

  345. They're afraid

  346. and they bow their eyes.

  347. they don't want to look.

  348. They don't want to look.

  349. And now,

  350. there's this surprise question

  351. and announcement.

  352. Look at verse 5.

  353. They say,

  354. and as they were frightened

  355. and bowed their face

  356. to the ground,

  357. the men,

  358. the angels said to them,

  359. why do you seek

  360. the living among the dead?

  361. Why do you seek

  362. the living among the dead?

  363. Here's how to think about it.

  364. They're kind of like,

  365. duh.

  366. What are you doing here?

  367. Why do you think

  368. Jesus would be here?

  369. Why are you seeking

  370. the living one

  371. in a cemetery?

  372. It's a surprising question.

  373. And they go on to say,

  374. he's not here,

  375. but has risen.

  376. He's alive.

  377. In the original language

  378. that this was written in,

  379. that verb has risen,

  380. scholars call it

  381. a divine passive.

  382. And here's what that means.

  383. These angels are saying

  384. that God has raised him

  385. from the dead.

  386. And so for their questions

  387. about who stole his body,

  388. these angels are saying,

  389. nobody stole his body.

  390. God raised him

  391. from the dead.

  392. These angels are kind of

  393. like saying,

  394. hey, let's just set

  395. the record straight

  396. so there's no confusion.

  397. He's not here.

  398. Dead people are in tombs.

  399. He's not dead.

  400. He's alive.

  401. He's alive.

  402. And if that were not,

  403. there's now this

  404. surprising connection.

  405. And we see that

  406. in verse 6.

  407. He is not here,

  408. but has risen.

  409. You see the word remember?

  410. Remember how he told you

  411. while he was still in Galilee

  412. that the Son of Man

  413. must be delivered

  414. into the hands of sinful men.

  415. and be crucified

  416. and on the third day,

  417. rise.

  418. It's a really important connection

  419. that they're making here.

  420. These angels are saying,

  421. duh, he's not here.

  422. He's risen.

  423. Like he said he would be.

  424. He's fulfilling the divine must.

  425. These angels are making a connection

  426. between what Jesus foretold

  427. and what Jesus has fulfilled.

  428. He foretold.

  429. He foretold

  430. that he was going to die.

  431. And not just that,

  432. he foretold

  433. where he would die.

  434. He foretold

  435. who would kill him.

  436. He foretold

  437. how he would be killed.

  438. And not just that,

  439. he foretold

  440. not that he would just die,

  441. but that he would be raised.

  442. And not just raised,

  443. he foretold

  444. when he would be raised

  445. on the third day.

  446. What do you think it means

  447. when angels

  448. quote you?

  449. Because this is what

  450. these angels are doing.

  451. Do you remember what he said?

  452. And they basically

  453. quote him verbatim

  454. from

  455. Luke 9 and Luke 18

  456. where Jesus foretells

  457. his death and resurrection.

  458. What does that mean?

  459. That means that his word

  460. is all authoritative.

  461. And what these angels

  462. are showing us

  463. is that Jesus,

  464. what Jesus foretold

  465. about himself,

  466. he has fulfilled.

  467. In 922 and 1831,

  468. he does foretell

  469. where he's going to die

  470. and who's going to kill him

  471. and how he's going to die.

  472. And he also foretells

  473. that he's going to be raised

  474. and when he will be raised.

  475. And what the angels

  476. are saying here in 24-7

  477. is it's been fulfilled.

  478. Remember?

  479. It's happened.

  480. It's a very specific fulfillment.

  481. Let me give you

  482. some perspective on this.

  483. Back in the day,

  484. this guy named Joe Namath

  485. who was a quarterback,

  486. he publicly guaranteed

  487. that his underdog

  488. New York Jets

  489. would upset

  490. the juggernaut

  491. Baltimore Colts

  492. in the 1969 Super Bowl.

  493. And then he delivered on it.

  494. They actually won.

  495. They actually won.

  496. Jesus

  497. has publicly guaranteed

  498. in Luke 9

  499. and Luke 18,

  500. he's publicly guaranteed

  501. where he would die,

  502. Jerusalem,

  503. by whom he would die,

  504. sinful men,

  505. the way he would die

  506. by crucifixion,

  507. and that he would be raised

  508. on the third day.

  509. It's one thing

  510. for Joe Namath

  511. to get lucky

  512. and win a Super Bowl.

  513. It's another thing

  514. for Jesus Christ

  515. to foretell his death

  516. and resurrection

  517. and then to fulfill that

  518. according to God's loving plan

  519. to rescue sinners.

  520. That's what this is all about.

  521. Jesus' death

  522. and resurrection

  523. was a must.

  524. It was a must

  525. for skeptics

  526. and for searchers

  527. and for pragmatists

  528. and for the guilt-ridden

  529. to rescue us

  530. it is a surprising connection.

  531. The words Jesus foretold

  532. have been fulfilled.

  533. Now, if Jesus was right

  534. about his own death,

  535. if what he said

  536. was right about his own death

  537. and his own resurrection,

  538. it begs the question,

  539. what else did he talk about?

  540. Well, did you know

  541. he talked about

  542. the nature of man?

  543. He talked about

  544. men and women

  545. enjoying food.

  546. He talked about

  547. men and women

  548. being in relationship

  549. with each other.

  550. He also talked about

  551. that at the core,

  552. men and women

  553. have a sin problem.

  554. There is this well

  555. within us

  556. that bubbles up

  557. things like

  558. sexual immorality,

  559. like envy,

  560. like hatred.

  561. In Mark chapter 7,

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  562. Jesus is very clear.

  563. What defiles

  564. a man and a woman

  565. is what comes

  566. from inside of you.

  567. Our hearts

  568. are sinful

  569. at their core

  570. and out of our

  571. sinful hearts

  572. we commit sins.

  573. sins.

  574. They defile us

  575. before God,

  576. says Jesus,

  577. and that defilement

  578. before God

  579. has a judgment

  580. on it.

  581. We read elsewhere

  582. that the wages

  583. of sin

  584. is death.

  585. Our sin

  586. deserves

  587. death

  588. according to

  589. our Bibles,

  590. which reminds me

  591. something else

  592. about Jesus' death.

  593. death.

  594. He foretold

  595. where He would die,

  596. by whom He would die,

  597. and how He would die.

  598. He also told us

  599. why He would die.

  600. In the Gospel of Mark,

  601. Jesus says,

  602. I came

  603. not to be served,

  604. but to serve

  605. and to give my life

  606. as a ransom

  607. for many.

  608. You see,

  609. the death

  610. that Jesus died

  611. isn't just

  612. a historical event,

  613. it accomplished

  614. something.

  615. Recently,

  616. there was a woman

  617. and her guy

  618. that were taken

  619. hostage in Africa,

  620. and someone

  621. paid a ransom payment

  622. and they got rescued.

  623. They were released.

  624. A ransom payment

  625. is a payment

  626. that liberates

  627. captives

  628. from slavery.

  629. And when Jesus

  630. talks about

  631. His life,

  632. His death

  633. as a ransom,

  634. His death

  635. liberates

  636. sinners

  637. from the

  638. slavery

  639. of sin

  640. and frees

  641. them

  642. so that they

  643. can experience

  644. the fullness

  645. of life

  646. in obedience

  647. to God.

  648. Another way

  649. of thinking

  650. about it

  651. is like this.

  652. Jesus' death

  653. payment

  654. was for sin.

  655. Jesus'

  656. resurrection

  657. was the

  658. declaration

  659. that that payment

  660. has been received

  661. and accepted.

  662. Jesus'

  663. word

  664. proves true.

  665. true.

  666. And what

  667. these angels

  668. are doing

  669. is,

  670. it's not just

  671. surprising

  672. that they

  673. showed up,

  674. it's not just

  675. surprising

  676. that they

  677. say,

  678. hey,

  679. why are you

  680. looking for

  681. the living

  682. among the

  683. dead?

  684. What's amazing

  685. is that they're

  686. making this

  687. connection

  688. between what

  689. Jesus foretold

  690. and what

  691. He's fulfilled.

  692. the resurrection

  693. is declaring

  694. that God's

  695. plan has

  696. been accomplished.

  697. Let's look

  698. at the last

  699. surprise.

  700. The people

  701. surprise.

  702. It's in

  703. verses 8

  704. through 12

  705. and I won't

  706. be long,

  707. I just want

  708. to point

  709. some things

  710. out to you.

  711. In verse

  712. 8,

  713. the women,

  714. they hear

  715. what these

  716. angels say,

  717. they've just

  718. quoted Jesus,

  719. they've made

  720. the connection,

  721. verse 8,

  722. and they

  723. remembered

  724. Jesus'

  725. words.

  726. Back in

  727. the gospel

  728. of Luke,

  729. when Jesus

  730. foretells

  731. His death

  732. and resurrection,

  733. Luke is

  734. very clear

  735. to say,

  736. the disciples

  737. didn't get it

  738. at all.

  739. They didn't

  740. understand what

  741. He was saying.

  742. And what we

  743. have right now

  744. is these

  745. women are

  746. understanding

  747. what Jesus

  748. has said.

  749. He truly

  750. did die for

  751. sin,

  752. He truly

  753. was raised

  754. from the

  755. dead.

  756. The empty

  757. tomb is

  758. the fulfillment

  759. of what

  760. He said

  761. must happen.

  762. And so

  763. their conclusion

  764. in verse

  765. 8,

  766. something's

  767. dawning in

  768. their hearts.

  769. He's alive.

  770. He's alive.

  771. And in

  772. verse 9,

  773. they return

  774. to the upper

  775. room where

  776. the disciples

  777. were and

  778. they tell

  779. them everything.

  780. They tell

  781. them about

  782. the empty

  783. tomb,

  784. they tell

  785. them about

  786. the two

  787. angels,

  788. they tell

  789. them about

  790. the connection

  791. they made

  792. or the

  793. fulfillment

  794. of Jesus'

  795. words.

  796. They say,

  797. He's alive.

  798. He's alive.

  799. They haven't

  800. even seen

  801. Jesus.

  802. They know

  803. He's alive.

  804. There's a

  805. change going

  806. on here.

  807. The people's

  808. surprise is a

  809. surprising change.

  810. These women,

  811. just minutes

  812. before,

  813. went to the

  814. grave thinking

  815. that they're

  816. going to put

  817. spices on a

  818. dead body.

  819. And now

  820. they've just

  821. left the

  822. grave.

  823. The burial

  824. spices are

  825. still in the

  826. grave.

  827. And now

  828. they've left

  829. announcing

  830. He's alive.

  831. Grieving to

  832. joy,

  833. hopelessness to

  834. hope.

  835. But it

  836. doesn't end

  837. with these

  838. women.

  839. There's a

  840. chain reaction

  841. going on

  842. because in

  843. verse 12,

  844. Peter has

  845. heard what

  846. they said,

  847. and it's not

  848. surprising by the

  849. way that the

  850. guys kind of

  851. first say,

  852. kind of like,

  853. whatever,

  854. I don't think

  855. what you're

  856. saying is true.

  857. You see that

  858. in verse 11,

  859. but these

  860. words seem to

  861. them the

  862. apostles in

  863. idle tale.

  864. Not

  865. surprising.

  866. But Peter

  867. thinks about

  868. it.

  869. And he

  870. bolts.

  871. Can you

  872. imagine what's

  873. going on in

  874. Peter right

  875. now?

  876. I'm guessing

  877. he was thinking

  878. something like

  879. this.

  880. These women

  881. come back,

  882. they're all

  883. excited,

  884. they relay

  885. the account,

  886. and I'm

  887. guessing something

  888. like this starts

  889. bubbling up in

  890. him.

  891. Is it true?

  892. Is it true?

  893. The last

  894. time in the

  895. gospel of

  896. Luke that

  897. we saw

  898. Peter,

  899. do you know

  900. what he was

  901. doing?

  902. He was

  903. weeping

  904. bitterly.

  905. And he was

  906. weeping bitterly

  907. because he had

  908. just denied

  909. Jesus three

  910. times,

  911. just like

  912. Jesus said

  913. he would.

  914. And so

  915. when he

  916. hears this,

  917. that the

  918. tomb is

  919. empty,

  920. that Jesus

  921. is alive,

  922. just like

  923. he said

  924. he would

  925. be,

  926. could you

  927. imagine what's

  928. going on in

  929. him?

  930. Seriously?

  931. Is it true?

  932. He

  933. hightails it

  934. to the

  935. tomb,

  936. he goes

  937. into the

  938. tomb,

  939. and he

  940. doesn't see

  941. Jesus,

  942. the angels

  943. aren't there,

  944. all that he

  945. sees are the

  946. burial linen

  947. cloths lying

  948. by themselves,

  949. and that's all

  950. he needed.

  951. He went home

  952. marveling at

  953. what had

  954. happened.

  955. Could you

  956. imagine what it

  957. would have been

  958. like to be

  959. Peter after

  960. denying Jesus?

  961. the shame,

  962. the guilt,

  963. the isolation,

  964. and here

  965. he's marveling.

  966. Surprise!

  967. He's alive,

  968. changing people.

  969. The empty

  970. tomb is like

  971. this catalyst

  972. of change

  973. that changes

  974. people.

  975. It starts

  976. with these

  977. women,

  978. it goes

  979. to Peter,

  980. and then

  981. we see

  982. in Acts

  983. this gospel

  984. message of

  985. Jesus who's

  986. died and

  987. been raised

  988. from the

  989. dead.

  990. It starts

  991. spreading to

  992. Jerusalem,

  993. to Judea,

  994. to Samaria,

  995. to the ends

  996. of the earth,

  997. and it's

  998. landed in

  999. Kenosha.

  1000. Jesus is

  1001. alive,

  1002. changing people

  1003. today.

  1004. If you read

  1005. the rest of

  1006. Luke 24,

  1007. you would read

  1008. a lot more

  1009. of the surprises

  1010. of Jesus.

  1011. There are some

  1012. things that he

  1013. does and says

  1014. in the rest

  1015. of Luke 24

  1016. that you're

  1017. just like,

  1018. he's amazing.

  1019. This is amazing.

  1020. So let me just

  1021. recap.

  1022. We started off

  1023. with no surprise.

  1024. These women

  1025. were grieving

  1026. and hope

  1027. fallen,

  1028. hope crushed.

  1029. And then there

  1030. was the tomb

  1031. surprise that

  1032. resulted in

  1033. confusion with

  1034. these women,

  1035. and then there's

  1036. the angelic

  1037. surprise where

  1038. clarity resulted.

  1039. the connection

  1040. to Jesus'

  1041. own words.

  1042. And then there's

  1043. the people

  1044. surprise,

  1045. changed lives.

  1046. Can it be

  1047. true?

  1048. Here's how you

  1049. can sum up

  1050. these 12

  1051. verses of

  1052. Luke 24.

  1053. You've already

  1054. heard it.

  1055. Jesus is

  1056. alive.

  1057. He's alive

  1058. today,

  1059. and he is

  1060. still changing

  1061. people.

  1062. He's changing

  1063. people from

  1064. people who are

  1065. hopeless to

  1066. people who are

  1067. hopeful,

  1068. for those who

  1069. are ashamed to

  1070. being marveling

  1071. and full of

  1072. happiness.

  1073. Hey, does this

  1074. news that

  1075. Jesus is alive,

  1076. does that

  1077. surprise you?

  1078. And if it

  1079. does, is that

  1080. a welcome

  1081. surprise or is

  1082. that an

  1083. unwelcome

  1084. surprise?

  1085. If you're a

  1086. skeptic in the

  1087. room, I'm

  1088. so glad you're

  1089. here, it's

  1090. not bad to

  1091. be a skeptic.

  1092. You're

  1093. thinking.

  1094. But let me

  1095. just put it to

  1096. you this way,

  1097. just by way

  1098. of suggestion.

  1099. Let's boil it

  1100. down.

  1101. If Jesus

  1102. wasn't raised

  1103. from the

  1104. dead, then

  1105. his words

  1106. prove

  1107. folly,

  1108. who

  1109. were terribly

  1110. mistaken.

  1111. Those of us

  1112. who banked

  1113. our lives on

  1114. him were

  1115. terribly

  1116. mistaken.

  1117. We acknowledge

  1118. that.

  1119. But if

  1120. Jesus truly

  1121. was raised

  1122. from the

  1123. dead, his

  1124. word is

  1125. proven true,

  1126. which means

  1127. there's no one

  1128. like him.

  1129. He's one of a

  1130. kind.

  1131. he was

  1132. either raised

  1133. from the

  1134. dead or

  1135. he wasn't.

  1136. And so if

  1137. you're a

  1138. skeptic in

  1139. the room,

  1140. I've got two

  1141. questions for

  1142. you.

  1143. The first

  1144. one is

  1145. this.

  1146. Could a

  1147. supernatural

  1148. explanation of

  1149. the empty

  1150. tomb actually

  1151. be the best

  1152. explanation for

  1153. the empty

  1154. tomb?

  1155. And then

  1156. second,

  1157. how do you

  1158. explain the

  1159. empty tomb?

  1160. How do you

  1161. explain the

  1162. empty tomb?

  1163. If you're a

  1164. pragmatist and

  1165. you're thinking

  1166. about your

  1167. Sunday mornings

  1168. and how you

  1169. want to spend

  1170. them, you're

  1171. determining what

  1172. matters most and

  1173. how you want to

  1174. spend your time

  1175. and what you

  1176. want to get

  1177. done, my

  1178. question to you

  1179. would be this.

  1180. In light of

  1181. today's passage,

  1182. could it be that

  1183. you just haven't

  1184. realized what

  1185. your greatest

  1186. need is?

  1187. That Jesus

  1188. himself has

  1189. said that

  1190. the biggest

  1191. problem you

  1192. have is not

  1193. outside of

  1194. you, it's

  1195. inside of

  1196. you, that

  1197. you have

  1198. sin at the

  1199. core of

  1200. who you

  1201. are.

  1202. And the

  1203. good news

  1204. is that

  1205. God has

  1206. made the

  1207. most practical

  1208. solution to

  1209. that for

  1210. your biggest

  1211. problem by

  1212. sending Jesus

  1213. as a payment

  1214. for your

  1215. sin.

  1216. So pragmatically

  1217. speaking, it's

  1218. the best solution

  1219. to your biggest

  1220. problem.

  1221. And if he's

  1222. alive,

  1223. he doesn't

  1224. fit into

  1225. your schedule,

  1226. you fit into

  1227. his plan.

  1228. He's that

  1229. glorious.

  1230. If you're a

  1231. searcher, you've

  1232. just been moving

  1233. from one thing

  1234. to the next.

  1235. You're just

  1236. trying to scratch

  1237. the itch.

  1238. Do you remember

  1239. the angels'

  1240. question to the

  1241. women?

  1242. Are you

  1243. looking for

  1244. the living

  1245. among the

  1246. dead?

  1247. Are you

  1248. trying to

  1249. scratch the

  1250. itch through

  1251. your career,

  1252. through a

  1253. cause, through

  1254. your children,

  1255. by more and

  1256. more comfort?

  1257. Is that where

  1258. you're trying to

  1259. find life?

  1260. Among the

  1261. dead?

  1262. Doesn't give

  1263. life?

  1264. Maybe you're

  1265. here this

  1266. morning because

  1267. God has been

  1268. wanting you to

  1269. hear this.

  1270. maybe you

  1271. have been

  1272. searching not

  1273. for an it,

  1274. but for a

  1275. who.

  1276. Jesus, who

  1277. is alive

  1278. today and

  1279. can scratch

  1280. your itch.

  1281. For the guilt

  1282. ridden.

  1283. Jesus pays

  1284. his death,

  1285. paid for all

  1286. the sin and

  1287. guilt you

  1288. have

  1289. accumulated

  1290. and will

  1291. accumulate.

  1292. In fact,

  1293. he already

  1294. sees you for

  1295. who you are.

  1296. He sees

  1297. through the

  1298. walls, he

  1299. sees through

  1300. the layers of

  1301. protection,

  1302. and not only

  1303. does he see

  1304. through that and

  1305. see you as you

  1306. are in all of

  1307. your shame and

  1308. guilt, he's

  1309. able to

  1310. forgive you and

  1311. set you free

  1312. from your shame

  1313. and guilt.

  1314. And not just

  1315. able, he

  1316. wants to.

  1317. He wants to

  1318. set you free.

  1319. Jesus is alive

  1320. today and he

  1321. is changing

  1322. lives and he

  1323. can change

  1324. yours.

  1325. He's a

  1326. friend of

  1327. sinners.

  1328. sinners.

  1329. If his

  1330. death is

  1331. God's way

  1332. of paying

  1333. for our

  1334. sin, then

  1335. his resurrection

  1336. is God's

  1337. announcement

  1338. that that

  1339. sin payment

  1340. has been

  1341. fully accepted

  1342. and it's

  1343. being offered

  1344. to you right

  1345. now.

  1346. Today, God

  1347. is offering

  1348. you full

  1349. forgiveness in

  1350. Jesus and

  1351. you don't

  1352. earn it, you

  1353. receive it as

  1354. a gift.

  1355. That's what

  1356. it is.

  1357. And for

  1358. those of you

  1359. in the room

  1360. who already

  1361. know Jesus

  1362. personally, you

  1363. hear the words

  1364. he is risen and

  1365. up from your

  1366. soul comes he's

  1367. risen indeed.

  1368. If you're a

  1369. doubting

  1370. Christian, you

  1371. find yourself

  1372. wondering, is

  1373. this all

  1374. true?

  1375. Let the

  1376. good news of

  1377. Easter Sunday

  1378. strengthen your

  1379. resolve.

  1380. He is

  1381. alive.

  1382. It is

  1383. all true.

  1384. He is our

  1385. living hope.

  1386. He is our

  1387. living confidence.

  1388. And if you

  1389. are a

  1390. self-condemning

  1391. Christian,

  1392. you sinned

  1393. this morning

  1394. against your

  1395. kids, you

  1396. sinned early

  1397. in the week

  1398. against someone

  1399. else and you

  1400. just keep on

  1401. replaying it

  1402. through your

  1403. mind again and

  1404. again and

  1405. again.

  1406. You, the

  1407. very one who

  1408. Jesus shed his

  1409. blood to ransom,

  1410. are condemning

  1411. yourself over and

  1412. over again.

  1413. You need to

  1414. remember that the

  1415. Jesus who died

  1416. for you is

  1417. alive for you and

  1418. he is interceding

  1419. right now according

  1420. to 1 John 2

  1421. one as your

  1422. advocate.

  1423. And as you

  1424. sin, he says,

  1425. done, paid,

  1426. my blood.

  1427. He is

  1428. alive

  1429. interceding for

  1430. you.

  1431. He is our

  1432. living hope.

  1433. He is our

  1434. living assurance

  1435. before the

  1436. Father.

  1437. God is

  1438. a quiet

  1439. Christian.

  1440. The thought of

  1441. speaking of

  1442. Jesus is scary

  1443. to you.

  1444. Do you

  1445. remember what

  1446. happened to the

  1447. women when they

  1448. remembered the

  1449. fulfillment of

  1450. Jesus' words?

  1451. They left the

  1452. grave and they

  1453. told those whom

  1454. they were closest

  1455. to that he is

  1456. alive.

  1457. the resurrection

  1458. is a catalyst to

  1459. evangelism.

  1460. To go tell that

  1461. he is alive, he

  1462. is risen.

  1463. You see, this is

  1464. good news.

  1465. It's not just good

  1466. news for you, it's

  1467. good news for your

  1468. neighbors.

  1469. It's not just good

  1470. news for your

  1471. neighbors, it's good

  1472. news for everyone

  1473. living in the city

  1474. of Kenosha.

  1475. This news is what

  1476. they need to hear.

  1477. It addresses their

  1478. greatest problem and

1479. it's not just for our

  1480. city.

  1481. this news changes

  1482. the world.

  1483. You can't keep

  1484. silent about the

  1485. resurrection.

  1486. He's alive and he's

  1487. changing lives.

  1488. The resurrection of

  1489. Jesus, it's the

  1490. greatest surprise of

  1491. all.

  1492. And it's the most

  1493. welcome news of all

  1494. for sinners like you

  1495. and me.

  1496. So just one more

  1497. time.

  1498. He is risen.

  1499. God, thank you so

  1500. much for this

  1501. historic account of

  1502. the resurrection of

  1503. Jesus.

  1504. It does our heart

  1505. well to recall it.

  1506. Jesus, you are

  1507. alive.

  1508. Change our lives.

1509. In your name we pray.

  1510. Amen.

  1511. Amen.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.

  1514. Amen.

  1515. Amen.

  1516. Amen.

  1517. Amen.

  1518. Amen.

  1519. Amen.

  1520. Amen.

  1521. Amen.

  1522. Amen.

  1523. Amen.
