  1. Good morning. My name is Billy Nye. I'm one of the associate pastors here at Christ the King.

  2. And I would like to welcome you to open your Bible if you have one.

  3. If you don't, there's one in the pew in front of you.

  4. And open to the very end of the book, the very end of the Bible, the book of Revelation.

  5. And we are toward the end, only a couple chapters away, chapter 19.

  6. Chapter 19 in the book of Revelation.

  7. Longing.

  8. Longing is a powerful force.

  9. Our lives tend to be governed by longing.

  10. People will do some pretty astounding things and will endure some very difficult things

  11. because they are longing for something.

  12. It doesn't matter whether you are very young or very old.

  13. You have longing.

  14. An infant longs for her mother's milk and lets everybody within a one mile radius know that she is longing for her mother's milk.

  15. A five-year-old yearns for his next Lego set.

  16. At least five-year-olds in our household do.

  17. A teenager longs for her driver's license and the independence to make choices on her own.

  18. A young man desires to meet and to be with the love of his life.

  19. A young married couple longs for financial stability or for children.

  20. And if God grants those children, those longings change.

  21. Then they long for a nap or a quiet evening on the couch.

  22. And once you hit middle age, your longings start becoming more for retirement.

  23. A rest from your labors.

  24. Our longing is never over, is it?

  25. And whether those longings are fulfilled with good gifts that God does give,

  26. or whether those longings end in disappointment and they linger,

  27. we continue to long.

  28. We are a longing people.

  29. But it is very important that we make sure that our greatest longings,

  30. our strongest longings are good ones.

  31. Because our longings shape our living.

  32. If you're joining us for the first time this morning,

  33. we've been journeying through this book of Revelation.

  34. And Revelation has a way of shaping our longings.

  35. Two weeks ago, Pastor Mike showed us from chapter 17 in Revelation,

  36. this very nasty lady named Babylon.

  37. She is a prostitute.

  38. And the prostitute Babylon stands for the whole system of the world

  39. that is set up in opposition to God and opposition to God's people.

  40. She sells pleasure and possessions, but at a high price.

  41. She costs something.

  42. Your allegiance.

  43. Your allegiance to her master, the beast, and his master, the dragon.

  44. And we are told not to marvel at this world system,

  45. this cultural and social force that seduces us with her pleasure and possessions.

  46. We are told not to long for her trinkets.

  47. And last week, Pastor Matt helped us see from Revelation 18 the reason why.

  48. Because Babylon is going to meet a soon and sudden end.

  49. So, we need to set our affection not on the allure of this world's pleasures and possessions,

  50. but we are to hate everything that Babylon stands for.

  51. And to come out of her.

  52. And to live in this world as exiles with longing.

  53. Not for this world.

  54. But longing, hungering for our true home to be with Jesus.

  55. And this morning, our longing is going to be sharpened and nourished.

  56. You might be saying,

  57. Billy, I listened pretty carefully to what Caleb read just a few minutes ago.

  58. I didn't hear the word longing.

  59. Can you show that to me in Revelation 19 somewhere?

  60. Yes, I can.

  61. You did not hear longing.

  62. You heard celebration.

  63. Did you hear all those hallelujahs?

  64. All that praise?

  65. Four times.

  66. It shows up.

  67. A lot of intense joy in God.

  68. Do you know why?

  69. Because longing is about to be satisfied.

  70. Heaven's longing is about to be fulfilled.

  71. And if heaven longs for it,

  72. then we, as heaven citizens who are in exile in the world still,

  73. we must long for it too.

  74. And we must live for it.

  75. But what is it?

  76. What is this it that we should be longing for and living for?

  77. What is this it that heaven is celebrating the fulfillment of?

  78. It's this.

  79. Look at verse 1.

  80. Hallelujah.

  81. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.

  82. Look at verse 6.

  83. The end of verse 6.

  84. Hallelujah.

  85. For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.

  86. Verse 6 summarizes it beautifully.

  87. What are we supposed to be longing for?

  88. What has heaven been longing for for so long?

  89. And now it's about to come about.

  90. And heaven's going crazy because of it.

  91. It's this.

  92. It's God's full and unchallenged rule over all things.

  93. His triumphant reign over his victory.

  94. Over his enemies.

  95. And it's near.

  96. It's very close.

  97. That's what heaven's been longing for.

  98. In fact, that's what the whole Bible has been longing for.

  99. That's what history has been longing for.

  100. Before sin entered the world, before humans embraced Satan's rule, Satan's authority, the universe was enjoying God's good and unchallenged rule.

  101. No one questioned the creator's authority and his goodness.

  102. But then mankind said, no.

  103. We want to be kings ourselves.

  104. And by doing so, all of creation has been subjected to chaos and disorder, to death, to decay, to corruption and evil.

  105. And we feel it right now.

  106. We feel the uck of it.

  107. But now, in Revelation 19, we get a delightful picture that God's great victory, his full and unchallenged rule over all things, is close.

  108. It's very near.

  109. And heaven's longing is about to be fulfilled.

  110. And we, now, here, must long for it and live for it now.

  111. In fact, if we were to squish what this passage means for us into one sentence, it would be this.

  112. If we long and live for God's triumphant reign now, we will not be disappointed then.

  113. If we long and live for God's triumphant reign now, we will not be disappointed then.

  114. So, let's proceed into the details of this text together with this big, huge truth in the back of our minds.

  115. And we're going to see two reasons in the two sections of this text, verses 1 to 5 and then verses 6 to 10.

  116. Two reasons why we should long and live for God's triumphant reign now.

  117. Here's the first.

  118. First, God's unchallenged rule means our future relief and vindication.

  119. God's unchallenged rule means something very special.

  120. Our future relief and vindication.

  121. Look at verse 1.

  122. After this, or literally after these things.

  123. That's pointing right back to Revelation 18.

  124. Right on the heels of Babylon's predicted doom, John hears a sound.

  125. I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven crying out.

  126. Apparently, at a 1992 game against the University of Nebraska football team,

  127. the cheers at Husky Stadium at the University of Washington reached an ear-splitting 133.6 decibels.

  128. That is 13 decibels louder than a thunderclap.

  129. Now imagine the sounds.

  130. Not of 100,000 people, but hundreds of hundreds of hundreds of thousands.

  131. The redeemed, combined with rank upon rank of angels.

  132. The entire population of heaven is saying,

  133. Yes!

  134. They're raising this resounding shout of praise because God's going to get victory.

  135. Our human ears would just be done.

  136. And forget about it.

  137. There is so much joy and festivity going on with God at the very center of it all in heaven.

  138. Hallelujah!

  139. Four times.

  140. Verse 1, and verse 3, and verse 4, and in verse 6.

  141. We hear this big command to praise God.

  142. That Hebrew word, hallelujah, we're used to hearing it in lots of different songs,

  143. but it means hallelujah, y'all praise Yah, Yahweh.

  144. Y'all praise Yahweh.

  145. You praise Yahweh.

  146. It's a command.

  147. Praise Yahweh, everybody.

  148. Yahweh is God's covenant name, his personal covenant name that is known to his people.

  149. And this word, hallelujah, it's the only place in the New Testament that it shows up,

  150. it's right here in this chapter.

  151. It shows up in the Old Testament in Hebrew, but it's the first time it shows up in Greek,

  152. and the last time it shows up in the Greek New Testament.

  153. We should get the sense of, wow, what is going on in this passage?

  154. What is going on that four times hallelujah is bam, bam, bam, bam?

  155. Well, heaven's rejoicing because God's great victory is very near.

  156. God is going to win the day and save his people forever.

  157. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.

  158. We've heard something similar back in chapter 7 when God's saints are gathered together,

  159. and they say, salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.

  160. So the gathered body of redeemed sinners in heaven,

  161. probably a bunch of angels all are rejoicing over this,

  162. but this praise is not just from them.

  163. Look at verse 4.

  164. The 24 elders and the four living creatures,

  165. they fall down and they worship God who is sitting on the throne saying,

  166. Amen, hallelujah.

  167. And then comes this throne, this voice that's from the throne itself,

  168. probably an angelic messenger sent on God's behalf says,

  169. Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.

  170. Man, it's just this, heaven is resounding with praise.

  171. Verse 4, verse 2.

  172. For his judgments are true and just.

  173. For he has judged the great prostitute who corrupted the earth with her immorality

  174. and has advantaged on her the blood of his servants.

  175. God is going to put Babylon down and heaven is going nuts.

  176. And it's jolting because we've just heard from chapter 18,

  177. this mourning, this sadness, this loss,

  178. the kings of the earth, the merchants, the sailors,

  179. they're all saying,

  180. Oh, the source of our selfish gain and profit is gone.

  181. What are we going to do now that Babylon has fallen?

  182. And then all of a sudden, heaven's like,

  183. Yeah!

  184. It's just jolting, the change of tone.

  185. It might be a cause for sadness if your intimacy is with the world,

  186. knowing that the world is going down.

  187. It is cause for great joy and celebration for those whose hearts are set on heaven.

  188. And as you notice verse 3,

  189. this victory is permanent.

  190. It's going to last forever.

  191. The smoke of her burning goes up forever and ever.

  192. Babylon's not going to come back.

  193. Okay, so it's evident.

  194. Heaven has been longing for this victory

  195. and now is celebrating it.

  196. And this is why.

  197. Babylon's doom is our relief and vindication.

  198. In verse 2, it's very clear.

  199. It's right for God to judge Babylon,

  200. the great prostitute.

  201. Because she corrupted the earth,

  202. she shed the blood of God's servants.

  203. Church, while we still live and breathe,

  204. we are in exile.

  205. The church has never been at home while still in this world.

  206. In fact, the moments when she feels most at home in the world

  207. is when she is least at home in heaven.

  208. We live in Babylon by necessity.

  209. We live here.

  210. We can't get away from it.

  211. We live in a social and cultural system

  212. that is fundamentally opposed to God.

  213. And because it's opposed to God,

  214. it's opposed to us, his people.

  215. And it has been this way for 20 centuries.

  216. It was this way when John dipped his pen in ink

  217. to write down this vision.

  218. It is this way now,

  219. and it will continue to be this way

  220. until God puts Babylon down.

  221. And it's helpful to keep in mind

  222. how the people receiving this book,

  223. originally, the seven churches of Asia,

  224. how they would have felt about hearing this great joy

  225. over God's full and unchallenged reign coming

  226. and Babylon being put down.

  227. Lots of these churches were suffering intense persecution.

  228. Keep a finger in this passage.

  229. Flip back to chapter 6.

  230. Revelation chapter 6.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  231. Look at verse 9 of Revelation 6.

  232. And then they were told,

  233. God's people have been and are and will be persecuted.

  234. And when his people are persecuted,

  235. God doesn't just shrug his shoulders and say,

  236. oh man, not again.

  237. There is a limit to how much he will allow.

  238. And when his saints ask how long,

  239. he says, just a little while longer.

  240. And I will avenge you.

  241. I will vindicate you.

  242. And when his vindication comes,

  243. it will be sudden and terrible,

  244. as we saw back in chapter 18.

  245. You don't mess with God's people and get away with it.

  246. But he will vindicate his people.

  247. He will be seen to be right.

  248. Relief and vindication is coming

  249. for those of us who live in Babylon.

  250. Imagine how the members of the church in Smyrna,

  251. one of the seven churches of Asia,

  252. imagine how they would have felt when they heard this.

  253. Jesus had just told them in chapter 2,

  254. he said, be faithful unto death.

  255. And it's going to be that way for a couple of you.

  256. How do you think they would have heard this?

  257. They'd be thinking, I might have Roman soldiers

  258. kicking down my door any minute,

  259. but Babylon ain't going to last.

  260. I might have to be faithful unto death,

  261. but my God will triumph over my enemies,

  262. and he will vindicate me in the end.

  263. I just need to hold on so that I can overcome.

  264. Imagine today how our brothers and sisters in Pakistan

  265. woke up this morning.

  266. They didn't know if this Lord's Day today,

  267. May 12th, would bring for them

  268. from their Muslim countrymen hate, persecution,

  269. or fellow saints in Iran,

  270. or those who had just experienced

  271. the bombings in Sri Lanka.

  272. It's not going to be that way forever.

  273. There will be relief,

  274. and there will be vindication.

  275. God is going to rule triumphantly

  276. over his enemies.

  277. Now, we can hear that,

  278. and we're like, okay, good.

  279. That's good for them.

  280. I don't really feel that myself right now, though.

  281. We don't really feel that opposition

  282. in our corner of the world at the moment.

  283. But there is more to the world's opposition to us

  284. than violent persecution.

  285. There are endless attempts to seduce us

  286. away into her corruption.

  287. Do you see that in verse 2?

  288. Who corrupted the earth with her immorality?

  289. As Matt encouraged us last week,

  290. we must see through the seductive advances

  291. of the world to make us long

  292. for what she can offer,

  293. what the prostitute can offer.

  294. Instead, we've got to hate

  295. all that Babylon stands for,

  296. which is the worship of self.

  297. We must hate it.

  298. We must long for a greater object

  299. of our affection.

  300. And that fight,

  301. that longing,

  302. that struggle,

  303. it takes energy.

  304. It's hard.

  305. The struggle against sin is real.

  306. Many of us in the room

  307. are feeling that right now.

  308. But here's the beautiful news

  309. of God's great victory.

  310. It ain't gonna last.

  311. Relief is coming.

  312. Your struggle against sin

  313. is just for a while.

  314. Your struggle against

  315. whatever temptation

  316. Satan is throwing your way

  317. is going to be temporary.

  318. So hold on.

  319. Hold on.

  320. We need to long

  321. and live

  322. for God's unchallenged rule.

  323. It's coming.

  324. And when it does,

  325. we will not be disappointed.

  326. Here's the second thing.

  327. Let's look at the second section

  328. of our text this morning.

  329. The second reason

  330. that we are to long

  331. and live

  332. for God's triumphant reign

  333. is found in verses 6 through 10.

  334. It's this.

  335. God's unchallenged rule

  336. means

  337. our forever union

  338. with Jesus.

  339. God's unchallenged rule

  340. means our forever union

  341. with Jesus.

  342. If you thought

  343. the sound of great praise

  344. in verse 1

  345. was spectacular,

  346. it's tripled

  347. in verse 6.

  348. Then I heard

  349. what seemed to be

  350. the voice

  351. of a great multitude

  352. like the roar

  353. of many waters

  354. and like the sound

  355. of mighty peels

  356. of thunder

  357. crying out.

  358. Not just a great crowd.

  359. Not just a stadium

  360. full of people

  361. but Niagara Falls

  362. combined with

  363. a raging thunderstorm.

  364. It just staggers

  365. the imagination

  366. to try to conceive

  367. of a massive thunderstorm

  368. raging over Niagara Falls

  369. in the middle

  370. of a football stadium

  371. of millions of people.

  372. But that's the effect

  373. that John's trying

  374. to get across.

  375. Major noise.

  376. Basically,

  377. the roof of heaven stadium

  378. just got blown off

  379. by the roar

  380. of its citizens

  381. going absolutely wild.

  382. I thought

  383. the joy

  384. was really evident

  385. in verse 1

  386. in this

  387. hallelujah chorus

  388. but now,

  389. whoa!

  390. Look at the last half

  391. of verse 6.

  392. Hallelujah!

  393. for the Lord

  394. God,

  395. the Almighty

  396. reigns.

  397. This is heaven

  398. sounding

  399. a similar

  400. triumphant note

  401. as verse 1

  402. but it's just

  403. amplified.

  404. At last!

  405. Finally!

  406. God's rule

  407. and reign

  408. is coming

  409. fully and finally

  410. and His enemies

  411. are going to be

  412. vanquished.

  413. But it's not just

  414. that His enemies

  415. are vanquished.

  416. Take a second

  417. to think of

  418. your favorite

  419. epic movie.

  420. They tend to star

  421. Russell Crowe

  422. or Mel Gibson

  423. but whichever one

  424. you've got

  425. in your mind

  426. just

  427. think of

  428. epic movie,

  429. okay?

  430. When do you

  431. as the viewer

  432. experience

  433. the greatest

  434. sense of relief

  435. and satisfaction

  436. when you watch

  437. movies

  438. like that?

  439. It's when the good

  440. guy finally beats

  441. the bad guy,

  442. right?

  443. it?

  444. Well, yes

  445. but there's

  446. something else.

  447. It's not just

  448. that, is it?

  449. It's not just

  450. vindication.

  451. It's not just

  452. triumph.

  453. It's when the good

  454. guy beats the bad

  455. guy so the good

  456. guy can have his

  457. girl.

  458. Right?

  459. The story ain't

  460. over until the bad

  461. guy dies

  462. and the good guy

  463. and his girl

  464. are finally

  465. together forever.

  466. Well, heaven

  467. is not just

  468. celebrating

  469. because God's

  470. enemies are

  471. going down.

  472. Heaven is

  473. celebrating

  474. because God's

  475. going to finally

  476. get his girl.

  477. Look at verse

  478. seven.

  479. Let us rejoice

  480. and exult

  481. and give him

  482. the glory

  483. for

  484. why so much

  485. joy?

  486. For the marriage

  487. of the Lamb

  488. has come.

  489. God's triumphant

  490. reign doesn't

  491. just mean that

  492. he vindicates

  493. his people.

  494. It means that

  495. he also is going

  496. to have his

  497. people.

  498. He's going to

  499. marry his

  500. people.

  501. Back in

  502. biblical times,

  503. the whole

  504. marriage process

  505. looked something

  506. like this.

  507. The prospective

  508. groom would

  509. head from

  510. his father's

  511. house to

  512. the prospective

  513. bride's

  514. father's house

  515. and negotiate

  516. a betrothal

  517. with him.

  518. He would have

  519. to pay a price

  520. for the bride

  521. and then the

  522. groom and the

  523. bride would

  524. legally be

  525. declared married

  526. after the

  527. price was

  528. paid.

  529. After the

  530. payment happened,

  531. the couple

  532. would then

  533. drink a cup

  534. of wine

  535. together to

  536. seal and

  537. ratify the

  538. fact that

  539. this was a

  540. legit union.

  541. This marriage

  542. was going to

  543. be a new

  544. covenant of

  545. these two

  546. people together.

  547. But then,

  548. that wouldn't

  549. be it.

  550. They would

  551. be legally

  552. married,

  553. but they

  554. would not

  555. consummate the

  556. union.

  557. They would

  558. not be

  559. physically

  560. intimate for

  561. about a

  562. year.

  563. The groom

  564. would go

  565. home to

  566. his father's

  567. house and

  568. he would

  569. begin preparing

  570. a place for

  571. his bride and

  572. preparing the

  573. wedding feast.

  574. This could

  575. take a while,

  576. about a year.

  577. While he was

  578. away working on

  579. her behalf,

  580. she would be

  581. waiting faithfully

  582. for him,

  583. but not just

  584. twiddling her

  585. thumbs.

  586. She would be

  587. waiting faithfully,

  588. not making any

  589. commitment with any

  590. others, but

  591. also preparing

  592. herself.

  593. A lot of work

  594. that goes into

  595. being, not just

  596. the wedding, but

  597. creating a new

  598. life with her

  599. future husband.

  600. So she began

  601. preparing herself

  602. actively for this

  603. wedding day.

  604. Then he would

  605. come suddenly,

  606. usually in the

  607. middle of the

  608. night, and that

  609. was part of the

  610. fun, didn't know

  611. when he was

  612. going to come,

  613. and then the

  614. wedding feast

  615. would begin.

  616. It would be

  617. joy.

  618. Throughout the

  619. Bible, the

  620. relationship between

  621. God and his

  622. people has often

  623. been compared to

  624. a marriage.

  625. God is the

  626. groom.

  627. He's the

  628. initiator in the

  629. relationship.

  630. He comes to his

  631. people, and he

  632. desires to bring

  633. her into a

  634. healthy, exclusive,

  635. protected, intimate

  636. relationship with

  637. himself.

  638. And God makes all

  639. the arrangements.

  640. He does all the

  641. work.

  642. First, he saves her

  643. from the bad guy

  644. way back in Exodus.

  645. Remember that?

  646. He delivers her from

  647. slavery to Pharaoh,

  648. but not just that.

  649. He brings her into

  650. a promised land, a

  651. place where she is

  652. going to be with

  653. him forever.

  654. But the very sad

  655. part of this story,

  656. the tragedy of it,

  657. is that God chose a

  658. very unfaithful bride.

  659. Right away, before

  660. they even got to the

  661. promised land, she

  662. started turning away

  663. to other lovers.

  664. Remember the golden

  665. calf?

  666. She started falling

  667. to seductions of

  668. false worship, the

  669. old Babylon, and she

  670. was turning away from

  671. her faithful bridegroom.

  672. The Old Testament

  673. prophets would often

  674. compare Israel to an

  675. unfaithful wife, panting

  676. after lovers, running

  677. headlong away from her

  678. husband.

  679. It's in Ezekiel 16 and

  680. Jeremiah 2.

  681. The whole book of

  682. Hosea is all about

  683. this.

  684. But then we come to

  685. Isaiah 54.

  686. And God, he does

  687. discipline his people.

  688. He sends his wife

  689. away.

  690. He briefly abandons

  691. her to her own

  692. self-worshiping

  693. devices.

  694. But then he makes

  695. the most profound

  696. promise.

  697. For the Lord has

  698. called you like a

  699. wife deserted and

  700. grieved in spirit,

  701. like a wife of youth

  702. when she is cast off,

  703. says your God.

  704. For a brief moment I

  705. deserted you, but with

  706. great compassion I will

  707. gather you.

  708. In overflowing anger

  709. for a moment I hid my

  710. face from you, but with

  711. everlasting love I will

  712. have compassion on you.

  713. And then about 700

  714. years later, breathing

  715. the air of planet

  716. earth as God made

  717. flesh, Jesus Christ

  718. spoke these words.

  719. Can the wedding guest

  720. feast when the

  721. bridegroom is here?

  722. He began pointing to

  723. himself.

  724. He's saying, I'm here.

  725. The bridegroom is

  726. back.

  727. And he didn't just

  728. show up just to hang

  729. out.

  730. He showed up to do

  731. what he promised to

  732. do in Isaiah 54.

  733. To gather his bride

  734. back to himself in

  735. great compassion and

  736. everlasting love and to

  737. win her heart back to

  738. him from her

  739. faithlessness.

  740. In essence, he came

  741. back to re-betroth her

  742. to himself.

  743. To pay the price, to

  744. drink the cup, and to

  745. betroth her to himself

  746. in love.

  747. So, he's having his

  748. last meal with his

  749. disciples in John 13

  750. through 16.

  751. He drinks the cup of

  752. the new covenant of

  753. betrothal and points to

  754. the price he was about

  755. to pay, the shedding of

  756. his own blood.

  757. And he also promised

  758. that he was going to go

  759. away for a period of

  760. time to prepare a place

  761. for his bride and his

  762. father's house.

  763. And he gave his bride

  764. instructions of how to

  765. be faithful in the

  766. meantime until he comes

  767. back.

  768. because he's going to

  769. return soon and

  770. suddenly to take her

  771. home to be with him

  772. forever.

  773. And here.

  774. Revelation 19, verse 7.

    Revelation 19:7

  775. Heaven is trembling

  776. with anticipation.

  777. God's great unchallenged

  778. rule is not only going to

  779. trounce the bad guy.

  780. God's unchallenged rule is

  781. also going to bring about

  782. the wedding feast.

  783. God is going to get his

  784. girl.

  785. Church, do you know

  786. something that's

  787. ridiculously amazing?

  788. We are the girl.

  789. We are the bride.

  790. We are the objects of our

  791. bridegroom's great affection.

  792. And he's coming back for us.

  793. Sinful, weak, foolish,

  794. faithless, bumbling us.

  795. Just let that sink in for a

  796. minute, people of God.

  797. We are the bride of the

  798. Lamb.

  799. Why would he want to be with

  800. me forever?

  801. Why would he love me?

  802. Why would he pay a price

  803. for me?

  804. Why would he go to prepare

  805. a place for me?

  806. We, fellow sinners,

  807. this truth should melt our

  808. hearts and convince us of

  809. our God's immense love for

  810. corrupt and faithless people

  811. like us.

  812. The God of endless days

  813. died to betroth himself to

  814. you forever.

  815. And he has gone away to

  816. prepare a place in his

  817. father's house for us and he

  818. will come soon and suddenly

  819. take us to the joyful

  820. wedding feast.

  821. It doesn't mean that we're

  822. anything lovely in

  823. ourselves.

  824. I know that about me.

  825. I think you know that about

  826. you.

  827. He doesn't love us because of

  828. something in us.

  829. He loves us because he loves

  830. us.

  831. And it is his love for us

  832. that makes us lovely.

  833. Speaking of lovely, look at

  834. the last part of verse 7.

  835. And his bride has made

  836. herself ready.

  837. It was granted to her to

  838. clothe herself with fine

  839. linen, bright and pure, for

  840. the fine linen is the

  841. righteous deeds of the

  842. saints.

  843. Church, listen carefully to

  844. what God's word is telling

  845. us.

  846. While we live here in

  847. Babylon, our primary

  848. occupation must be preparing

  849. ourselves for the wedding

  850. feast.

  851. Let's pretend a young

  852. couple get engaged to be

  853. married.

  854. They are officially

  855. betrothed, rings and all.

  856. The wedding date is set and

  857. the groom-to-be is busy.

  858. He's finding an apartment

  859. for them to live in.

  860. He's arranging the wedding

  861. venue.

  862. He's securing an

  863. officiant.

  864. He's visiting caterers.

  865. He's making plans for the

  866. honeymoon, et cetera, et

  867. cetera, et cetera.

  868. All the while, the bride

  869. spends the months of her

  870. engagements, going out with

  871. friends, taking a couple

  872. vacations by herself, sitting

  873. on the couch, watching

  874. Netflix the rest of the time.

  875. And the day of the wedding

  876. arrives.

  877. And her phone goes off.

  878. Beep, beep, beep, beep,

  879. beep.

  880. Wedding today.

  881. She gasps.

  882. She doesn't have a dress.

  883. She doesn't have shoes.

  884. She doesn't have jewelry.

  885. She doesn't have

  886. bridesmaids' dresses.

  887. She doesn't have a hair

  888. appointment.

  889. Nothing.

  890. She just shows up at the

  891. wedding, sheepish, in sweats

  892. and a t-shirt, completely

  893. unprepared.

  894. Let that not be us, church.

  895. Let that not be us.

  896. Our greatest longing and our

  897. greatest goal in living now is

  898. to prepare ourselves for the

  899. wedding day then.

  900. To be with Jesus forever.

  901. How are we going to do that?

  902. Notice the end of verse 8.

  903. The beautiful wedding dress that

  904. she has on is the fine linen of

  905. righteous deeds of the saints.

  906. Bright and pure.

  907. Now what are those righteous

  908. deeds?

  909. And how do we clothe ourselves

  910. with those righteous deeds?

  911. It's all about living a life of

  912. faith in response to this grace

  913. of being betrothed to our

  914. bridegroom.

  915. It means longing for our true

  916. husband and living in a way

  917. that's pleasing to him.

  918. It means setting our affection on

  919. him alone.

  920. Not giving away to the

  921. seductions of Babylon's false

  922. worship of self.

  923. It means laying our lives down

  924. in love for each other.

  925. In all of our relationships.

  926. Marriage, children, friends,

  927. family, everything.

  928. It means laying our lives down.

  929. It means walking in humility.

  930. It means avoiding moral

  931. compromise at work.

  932. It means caring for outsiders

  933. in our community.

  934. It means guarding our mouths

  935. against speaking gossip and

  936. disciplining ourselves to speak

  937. the truth even if it hurts us.

  938. It means refusing to complain

  939. or grumble by resolving to

  940. trust God in every situation.

  941. It means putting all of our

  942. energy into learning and loving

  943. our God's commands in his word.

  944. It means confessing our sin

  945. and turning from it daily.

  946. Taking up our cross and

  947. following the lamb wherever he

  948. goes.

  949. And you might be thinking

  950. that sounds really hard.

  951. Look at that beautiful phrase

  952. in verse 8.

  953. It was granted.

  954. In other words

  955. all those righteous deeds

  956. that we are to walk in

  957. are enabled.

  958. Do you hear that granted language?

  959. It's grace language.

  960. It's enabled by the grace

  961. that purchased us

  962. as his bride

  963. in the first place.

  964. It's like this.

  965. We aren't his bride

  966. because we've put on

  967. the righteous deeds.

  968. We put on the righteous deeds

  969. because we are his bride.

  970. And there's one more way

  971. that we can prepare ourselves

  972. for that day.

  973. Look at verses 9 and 10.

  974. It's by pondering the joy

  975. of being at that feast.

  976. There's this final reminder

  977. of the goodness

  978. and the privilege

  979. that we currently have

  980. as those who are invited

  981. to the great wedding feast.

  982. The angel tells John

  983. write this down.

  984. It's always good to pay attention

  985. when an angel tells you

  986. to write something down.

  987. So let's listen.

  988. Blessed are those

  989. who are invited

  990. to the marriage supper

  991. of the lamb.

  992. It doesn't say blessed are they

  993. when they get there.

  994. It says blessed now

  995. are those

  996. who are invited now.

  997. It's zeroing in

  998. on the present blessing

  999. of trusting the promise

  1000. of that future hope.

1001. This is the fourth time

  1002. that word blessed

  1003. has shown up

1004. in the book of Revelation.

  1005. It's kind of woven

  1006. in and out

1007. of the book of Revelation

  1008. and it's meant

  1009. to communicate to us

1010. if we listen to these words

1011. in the book of Revelation

  1012. now

  1013. and we savor

  1014. what they mean

  1015. and we ponder it

  1016. and we seek to

  1017. bring that into

1018. the soil of our hearts,

  1019. it's going to bring

  1020. present joy

  1021. and blessing

  1022. now.

  1023. So if you've trusted

  1024. in Jesus Christ

  1025. you are his forever.

  1026. You are called

  1027. to the feast.

  1028. You are invited

  1029. to the greatest joy

  1030. ever known

  1031. around God's table

  1032. at the wedding

  1033. of Jesus

  1034. and his bride.

  1035. In fact the promise

  1036. is so staggering

  1037. in verse 10

  1038. John bows down

  1039. to worship

1040. the one who speaks it

  1041. to him.

  1042. The trustworthiness

  1043. of the word

  1044. and the glory

  1045. of what he was

  1046. experiencing

  1047. this promise

  1048. it was so much

  1049. for him.

  1050. It was too much

  1051. for him

1052. and so he was tempted

  1053. to worship the angel

  1054. who just relayed

  1055. the message

  1056. but the angel

  1057. says don't worship me

  1058. I'm just a fellow servant.

  1059. The promise

  1060. of the wedding feast

  1061. is meant to bring

  1062. present blessing

  1063. for those of us

  1064. who hold

  1065. to the testimony

  1066. of Jesus

  1067. now.

  1068. It's a little morsel

  1069. of goodness

  1070. that's meant to

  1071. nourish your soul

  1072. with longing

  1073. so that your living

  1074. might be that

  1075. of a bride

  1076. who is preparing

  1077. herself

  1078. and waiting

  1079. for her groom

  1080. waiting for the

  1081. day when he

  1082. comes to take

  1083. her to himself

  1084. and if you take

  1085. a little peek

  1086. at the very next

  1087. verse in verse 11

  1088. you'll see that

  1089. he's coming

  1090. riding on a white

  1091. horse

  1092. see that next week

  1093. he's coming

  1094. church

  1095. he's coming

  1096. for you

  1097. his triumphant

  1098. reign is coming

  1099. long for it

  1100. live for it

  1101. and you will not

  1102. be disappointed

  1103. when he comes

  1104. by way of

  1105. response

  1106. let me just

  1107. ask you a few

  1108. questions

  1109. to consider

  1110. do you

  1111. share

  1112. heaven's joy

  1113. at the thought

  1114. of God's

  1115. forever

  1116. rule

  1117. do you

  1118. share

  1119. heaven's joy

  1120. do you

  1121. also

  1122. long

  1123. for God's

  1124. unrivaled

  1125. kingdom

  1126. if you do

  1127. continue to

  1128. set your

  1129. heart

  1130. on that

  1131. blessed

  1132. reminder

  1133. that you

  1134. are

  1135. personally

  1136. invited

  1137. and that

  1138. you yourself

  1139. are a member

  1140. of that

  1141. bride

  1142. that was

  1143. purchased

  1144. at the

  1145. price

  1146. of

  1147. the

  1148. lamb's

  1149. blood

  1150. if you

  1151. don't

  1152. if that

  1153. does not

  1154. strike

  1155. joy

  1156. at least

  1157. a little

  1158. bit

  1159. in your

  1160. heart

  1161. or if

  1162. that joy

  1163. is fuzzy

  1164. then consider

  1165. this second

  1166. question

  1167. what does

  1168. bring you

  1169. joy

  1170. what do

  1171. you celebrate

  1172. and rejoice

  1173. in

  1174. if the

  1175. objects

  1176. of your

  1177. affection

  1178. are only

  1179. things that

  1180. don't last

  1181. things of

  1182. Babylon

  1183. then chances

  1184. are your

  1185. heart belongs

  1186. not to

  1187. the bridegroom

  1188. but to

  1189. the prostitute

  1190. to

  1191. allegiance

  1192. not to

  1193. the true

  1194. king

  1195. but to

  1196. the beast

  1197. come out

  1198. there's no

  1199. joy there

  1200. there's no

  1201. lasting

  1202. fulfillment

  1203. there

  1204. revelation

  1205. does not

  1206. give us

  1207. the option

  1208. of

  1209. neither

  1210. rejoicing

  1211. in Satan's

  1212. rule

  1213. nor in

  1214. God's

  1215. rule

  1216. there's no

  1217. third way

  1218. we either

  1219. delight in

  1220. the fact

  1221. that God

  1222. is our

  1223. king

  1224. or we

  1225. delight in

  1226. the fact

  1227. that we

  1228. are our

  1229. own

  1230. kings

  1231. or queens

  1232. and if

  1233. that is

  1234. the truth

  1235. then we

  1236. are in

  1237. league

  1238. with the

  1239. beast

  1240. and the

  1241. prostitute

  1242. there's no

  1243. third way

  1244. don't try to

  1245. ride the

  1246. middle

  1247. it's either

  1248. one

  1249. or the

  1250. other

  1251. if you

  1252. do

  1253. share in

  1254. the joy

  1255. of heaven

  1256. though

  1257. at least

  1258. a little

  1259. bit

  1260. there's that

  1261. there

  1262. it's a seed

  1263. it's planted

  1264. it's bearing

  1265. fruit in your

  1266. life

  1267. then you're in

  1268. the fight

  1269. against Babylon

  1270. you're struggling

  1271. against setting

  1272. your heart

  1273. on the things

  1274. of this world

  1275. then if that's

  1276. you consider

  1277. this final

  1278. question

  1279. is Jesus

  1280. your bridegroom

  1281. calling you

  1282. to prepare

  1283. yourself

  1284. in a particular

  1285. way

  1286. today

  1287. is there a

  1288. sinful habit

  1289. that he has

  1290. made you aware

  1291. of this week

  1292. that you know

  1293. you need to

  1294. put off

  1295. you know you

  1296. need his grace

  1297. to put off

  1298. to put away

  1299. to come out

  1300. of

  1301. or is there

  1302. a habit

  1303. of righteousness

  1304. that you know

  1305. that he is

  1306. calling you

  1307. to put on

  1308. how can you

  1309. make effort

  1310. today

  1311. grace enabled

  1312. effort

  1313. to prepare

  1314. yourself

  1315. actively

  1316. today

  1317. this week

  1318. for the

  1319. wedding feast

  1320. may God

  1321. give us

  1322. the grace

  1323. that we need

  1324. to faithfully

  1325. respond

  1326. to this word

  1327. let's pray

  1328. to that end

  1329. father you

  1330. have sent

  1331. your son

  1332. to betroth

  1333. himself

  1334. to a bride

  1335. forever

  1336. and your

  1337. unchallenged

  1338. rule is

  1339. soon coming

  1340. when you

  1341. will vanquish

  1342. your enemies

  1343. and you

  1344. will bring

  1345. the wedding

  1346. feast

  1347. about

  1348. God

  1349. would you

  1350. please

  1351. change our

  1352. longing

  1353. from anything

  1354. that's said

  1355. on this

  1356. world

  1357. to your

  1358. unchallenged

  1359. rule

  1360. help us

  1361. to long

  1362. for that

  1363. day

  1364. to long

  1365. for the

  1366. wedding

  1367. feast

  1368. to long

  1369. to be

  1370. with you

  1371. in our

  1372. union

  1373. with you

  1374. forever

  1375. give us

  1376. grace

  1377. God

  1378. to put

  1379. aside

  1380. to put

  1381. off

  1382. that

  1383. which

  1384. does not

  1385. bring

  1386. ultimate

  1387. and lasting

  1388. fulfillment

  1389. give grace

  1390. now

  1391. minister to

  1392. each one

  1393. of us

  1394. by your

  1395. spirit

  1396. we pray

  1397. in Christ's

  1398. name

  1399. amen
