  1. Please bear with my singing for just one moment.

  2. Happy birthday to you.

  3. Happy birthday to you.

  4. Happy birthday, dear Gertrude.

  5. I was curious if anyone would finish the song.

  6. Right?

  7. We know that happy birthday has four lines.

  8. And if we only hear three, we're not satisfied.

  9. There's no happy birthday resolution without the final line,

  10. happy birthday to you.

  11. Well, Revelation chapter 20, verses 11 to 15,

    Revelation 20:11–15

  12. is kind of like that final line to happy birthday.

  13. If the final judgment was not in our Bible,

  14. it would be like living in eternity,

  15. waiting for and never hearing the final happy birthday line sung.

  16. The issue of sin must be resolved.

  17. Or otherwise, life is not satisfying.

  18. Judgment must come.

  19. And Revelation 20, 11 to 15, this great white throne judgment,

  20. is God's last needed act against sin.

  21. God resolves it.

  22. The issue of sin, this issue that has been wreaking havoc on creation since the beginning, nearly.

  23. And God will leave no loose ends.

  24. There's no possibility of sin kind of rearing its ugly head ever again,

  25. kind of reemerging from the tomb.

  26. There will never ever again be any sort of move on the part of God's enemies to take His throne,

  27. to do violence to Him or His church.

  28. Because with the final judgment, sin is no more.

  29. It's God's resolution to sin.

  30. And you're maybe sitting here saying,

  31. well, that's all well and good, Matt.

  32. But how does this apply right now here today?

  33. Maybe you're in the room today,

  34. and there's just a person who immediately comes to mind,

  35. and you're just like, oh, I'm so glad that person's going to get his.

  36. She's going to get hers.

  37. That you're struggling to love an enemy,

  38. and you're just, oh, God, please bring this day now.

  39. I really want it here now.

  40. How does the final judgment help you love your enemy?

  41. Or maybe, I'm guessing all of us fall into the second category too,

  42. where the final judgment,

  43. there's names and there's faces of people near and dear to our hearts.

  44. And when we think of the final judgment,

  45. we're heartbroken.

  46. Because there's friends and family and neighbors and sisters and brothers

  47. and all the rest in our lives who we know right now,

  48. if they were to face this judgment today,

  49. they'd be in trouble.

  50. Because they've rejected Jesus.

  51. They're living for themselves.

  52. Does this final judgment give us any way forward?

  53. How we're to see through what God is telling us

  54. to move towards our loved ones with the gospel?

  55. Because God does resolve sin.

  56. We know that.

  57. So how do we make sense of this?

  58. How does this passage help us today?

  59. Why do we have to sit here and kind of think about something

  60. that's so uncomfortable for us?

  61. If you're like me, you start thinking about hell,

  62. you start thinking about judgment,

  63. and it becomes very uncomfortable very quickly.

  64. This is hard.

  65. But far from this text just kind of being this unnecessary topic

  66. that we can sweep under the rug

  67. or we can kind of ignore until a later time,

  68. the final judgment matters very much for us today.

  69. And though we're not going to be able to deal with every single tension

  70. that this passage is going to present,

  71. the goal for us today is to provide some ways

  72. how this text can shape our relationship with Jesus

  73. and our relationship with others around us,

  74. particularly for those who don't know Jesus.

  75. So that's our goal.

  76. We're going to try and show how this final judgment matters

  77. and how we relate to Jesus day in and day out as his disciples

  78. and how we relate to a lost world

  79. who is on a one-way street to hell

  80. apart from receiving the gospel.

  81. Here's the claim of this passage.

  82. I almost don't even need to say it.

  83. You heard it read.

  84. You know what it's about.

  85. But let me try and summarize it.

  86. Jesus will carry out the final judgment on each and every person.

  87. And those whose names are not found in his book of life

  88. will spend eternity in the lake of fire.

  89. Jesus will carry out the final judgment on each and every person who has ever lived.

  90. And for every single person who's ever lived,

  91. whose name is not found in Jesus' book of life,

  92. he or she will spend eternity in the lake of fire.

  93. That's what this passage very clearly tells us.

  94. And so today we're going to walk through it by asking four questions.

  95. Four questions of this passage.

  96. And as we're answering these questions,

  97. we're going to try and deal with some of the tensions.

  98. And we're going to try and apply it again as it relates to our faith

  99. and our following of Jesus

  100. and how we interact with those around us.

  101. So four questions.

  102. Question number one from Revelation 20.

  103. 11 to 15.

  104. What does John see?

  105. Of course, that may seem like stating the obvious,

  106. but let's walk through it again.

  107. Put simply, John sees the final judgment.

  108. This is, on the one hand,

  109. the tragic end of a staggering number of individuals who did not repent,

  110. who spent their life in war against the Lamb and the Lamb's people.

  111. But on another hand, it's sin's last breath.

  112. After thousands of years of wreaking havoc,

  113. from Lucifer's war for the throne in heaven,

  114. to the wickedness in the days of Noah,

  115. when God was sad that He even made man,

  116. to more modern examples of things like the Holocaust,

  117. thousands of years of havoc.

  118. Thousands of years of havoc,

  119. and sin breathes its last breath.

  120. It's the last chapter.

  121. The book is closed.

  122. It's done.

  123. This is the resolution

  124. that all of creation has been groaning for

  125. since Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  126. And this is the final move

  127. before the new heavens and the new earth come down.

  128. The place where God

  129. will dwell with His people forever.

  130. And no detestable thing will ever enter into it.

  131. This place that is free of sin and free of death.

  132. So John sees the final judgment.

  133. It's both tragic and wonderful.

  134. That's the first question.

  135. John sees the final judgment.

  136. But then we have to ask,

  137. who's there?

  138. Who does John see at this judgment?

  139. Well, if you look in verse 11,

  140. the first person that John sees

  141. is the one on the throne.

  142. Notice he's on a great and white throne.

  143. It's great because it's unrivaled.

  144. This isn't one throne among many thrones.

  145. This is the throne of thrones.

  146. This is the only throne at the end of time

  147. when judgment comes that matters.

  148. And it's white because of a few reasons.

  149. This word white in Revelation,

  150. it speaks of purity.

  151. It speaks of holiness.

  152. It speaks of wisdom.

  153. So the judge on this throne,

  154. on this great white throne,

  155. he sees everything perfectly.

  156. He knows everything that each person has ever done.

  157. There's nothing that escapes his vision

  158. or his knowledge or his justice.

  159. That makes him uniquely qualified

  160. to judge the nations.

  161. He will judge everybody with equity

  162. and with fairness.

  163. There's no need to wonder

  164. at the end of this judgment

  165. whether God was just and fair and right.

  166. It's because of who he is.

  167. But who is this?

  168. So is this,

  169. are we talking about God the Father here?

  170. Are we talking about the Son, Jesus?

  171. Jesus?

  172. When Revelation,

  173. the one on the throne

  174. is always seen as the Father,

  175. the Ancient of Days from Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  176. However,

  177. the Lamb, Jesus,

  178. is always seen in the midst of the throne.

  179. And he's always the one

  180. kind of carrying out the judgment.

  181. Remember back to chapter 5,

  182. it's the Lion of Judah.

  183. He alone,

  184. who is worthy to take the scroll

  185. and to break its seals

  186. and to carry out judgment.

  187. So rather than saying it's,

  188. well maybe it's the Father,

  189. maybe it's Jesus,

  190. it's yes.

  191. It's a both and.

  192. The Father and the Son

  193. are united in this judgment.

  194. In John's Gospel,

  195. Jesus says that the Father judges no one

  196. but has given all judgment

  197. into the hands of the Son.

  198. So the first person John sees

  199. is God on his throne.

  200. But then of course in verses 12 and 13,

  201. we see those who are standing before the throne,

  202. those who are being judged.

  203. And notice how John describes them.

  204. Four times in verses 12 and 13,

  205. they are referred to as the dead.

  206. I saw the dead,

  207. great and small.

  208. And the dead were judged

  209. by what was written in the books.

  210. Verse 13,

  211. the sea gave up the dead who were in it.

  212. Death and Hades gave up the dead

  213. who were in them.

  214. They're also described as great and small.

  215. Of course,

  216. we're not talking about

  217. seven foot basketball players

  218. and three foot six,

  219. nine year olds.

  220. The great and small is referring

  221. not to a physical stature

  222. but to the rich and powerful

  223. and mighty and influential

  224. and celebrities

  225. and those who are poor

  226. and insignificant,

  227. those overlooked by the world.

  228. John wants us to see

  229. in this description,

  230. great and small,

  231. that no class or social status

  232. of people

  233. escape this judgment.

  234. This judgment

  235. involves everyone.

  236. And I find it so interesting

  237. that everybody's standing

  238. before the throne

  239. but no words

  240. come up in this passage.

  241. Nobody's pleading for their lives.

  242. The judge is not seen speaking here.

  243. So what's going on?

  244. We don't even really have enough

  245. to speculate.

  246. But it seems that these dead

  247. are just standing there

  248. waiting for God

  249. to pronounce

  250. the judgment.

  251. And notice too

  252. where they're from.

  253. These dead,

  254. where did they come from?

  255. Well, it tells us that

  256. they're coming out of the sea,

  257. they're coming out of death

  258. and Hades,

  259. that these places

  260. are surrendering the dead

  261. that they've been housing

  262. somehow

  263. for any number of years.

  264. So we're probably

  265. wondering,

  266. are Christians here too?

  267. It's hard to be certain.

  268. I'm not totally

  269. decided one way or another

  270. but I want to say

  271. a couple of things

  272. and then give you

  273. my best sense of

  274. who is at this judgment.

  275. First, we know from

  276. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 10,

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  277. Paul says that

  278. we must all stand

  279. before the judgment seat

  280. of Christ.

  281. So Paul is saying

  282. even Christians

  283. someday will stand

  284. before Jesus

  285. and give account

  286. of our entire lives.

  287. But then we also know,

  288. right,

  289. that because we are

  290. in Jesus,

  291. because we are

  292. followers of Jesus,

  293. Romans 8 verse 1

    Romans 8:1

  294. tells us,

  295. there is therefore

  296. now no condemnation.

  297. So there is not

  298. a true born again

  299. Christian on planet earth

  300. who needs to fear

  301. standing before

  302. the judgment seat

  303. of Christ

  304. because being in Christ

  305. they are forgiven

  306. and the judgment

  307. was,

  308. the wrath was poured

  309. out on Christ

  310. so that we might

  311. have life.

  312. But that being said,

  313. I do not think

  314. that Christians

  315. are in the depiction

  316. of judgment

  317. here in Revelation 20.

  318. Three reasons why.

  319. when the dead

  320. seems to be a really

  321. strange way

  322. to refer to Christians.

  323. Seems a strange name

  324. to apply to a believer,

  325. right,

  326. because

  327. though we die,

  328. we live.

  329. Those who,

  330. those Christians who died

  331. when we see them

  332. in the book of Revelation,

  333. they're always

  334. seeming to be alive

  335. spiritually,

  336. speaking to God

  337. or singing His praises

  338. like the martyrs

  339. under the altar

  340. in chapter 6

  341. or in the song of Moses

  342. from chapter 15.

  343. Also,

  344. another reason

  345. why I don't think

  346. Christians are there

  347. is because of the places

  348. that are giving up

  349. the dead.

  350. Death and Hades,

  351. if you remember

  352. back in chapter 6,

  353. death was the one

  354. on the rider

  355. of the pale horse.

  356. He's an agent

  357. of God's judgment

  358. who goes out

  359. to kill a quarter

  360. of the world.

  361. And the sea,

  362. though sometimes

  363. just refers to

  364. that physical body

  365. of water over there,

  366. many other times

  367. in Revelation

  368. speaks of this place

  369. of chaos,

  370. this place of evil

  371. that God must subdue.

  372. And in chapter 17,

  373. the sea is referred to

  374. as all the nations

  375. that the prostitute

  376. is seated upon

  377. and is seduced

  378. and influenced

  379. away from God.

  380. And then in chapter 20,

  381. it seems that

  382. there's a distinction

  383. between those

  384. who have been

  385. raised with Jesus

  386. to participate

  387. in this thousand years

  388. and those

  389. who remain dead

  390. until the end.

  391. If all of the Christians

  392. are raised

  393. to reign with Jesus,

  394. then that stands

  395. to reason

  396. that those who are left

  397. are non-Christians

  398. who will be raised

  399. to judgment.

  400. And immediately

  401. before our text

  402. this morning,

  403. we see the defeat

  404. of Satan,

  405. which seems to flow

  406. right into the defeat

  407. of all those

  408. who have aligned

  409. themselves with him.

  410. So that's my best sense

  411. of who's at this judgment.

  412. The judge

  413. and all of those

  414. who die apart

  415. from Jesus Christ.

  416. Before we answer

  417. the fourth question

  418. of, well,

  419. how is judgment

  420. carried out?

  421. What are the criteria?

  422. I want us to focus

  423. on this third question

  424. of what is this

  425. lake of fire?

  426. It's important

  427. that we

  428. actually get

  429. a clear sense

  430. of what this place

  431. is.

  432. because people

  433. want to distort it,

  434. they want to

  435. make it sound

  436. like it's

  437. less than

  438. what it actually is,

  439. that it's a different

  440. kind of judgment

  441. than what

  442. the Bible talks about.

  443. So let's just

  444. ask the question,

  445. what is this

  446. lake of fire?

  447. In chapters 19

  448. and 20,

  449. we see that this

  450. is a place

  451. where the beast,

  452. the false prophet,

  453. and their boss,

  454. Satan,

  455. are cast forever.

  456. the anti-trinity

  457. is thrown

  458. into the lake

  459. of fire.

  460. And if you look

  461. in verse 10

  462. of chapter 20,

  463. you see that

  464. they will be

  465. tormented

  466. their day and

  467. night

  468. without end.

  469. In chapter 14,

  470. verses 9 to 11,

  471. this torment

  472. occurs

  473. in the presence

  474. of God's

  475. holy angels

  476. and in the

  477. presence

  478. of the Lamb

  479. Himself.

  480. God is still

  481. there

  482. and it's

  483. horrible.

  484. I think

  485. this is one

  486. of the things

  487. that should

  488. help us

  489. when we're

  490. talking to

  491. non-believers.

  492. I'm guessing

  493. you've heard

  494. people talk

  495. about,

  496. well,

  497. I just can't

  498. wait until,

  499. you know,

  500. hell's going to

  501. be this huge

  502. party,

  503. right?

  504. And if I

  505. can just

  506. get there,

  507. then I'll

  508. be free

  509. of God

  510. and rid

  511. of all

  512. of His

  513. shackles

  514. and all

  515. of these

  516. Christians

  517. trying to

  518. tell me

  519. to abide

  520. by these

  521. rules.

  522. And God's

  523. still there.

  524. This is not

  525. a place

  526. that you

  527. escape from

  528. God,

  529. that you

  530. somehow are

  531. set free

  532. and liberated

  533. to kind

  534. of do

  535. everything

  536. you want.

  537. And we

  538. can't let

  539. people walk

  540. around this

  541. planet

  542. thinking that's

  543. true.

  544. We must

  545. tell them,

  546. no,

  547. Jesus is still

  548. there and you

  549. will be in

  550. torment.

  551. You will

  552. have no rest

  553. there.

  554. You will

  555. have no freedom

  556. from God.

  557. God will be

  558. there.

  559. Don't make

  560. the mistake

  561. of thinking

  562. this is a

  563. party.

  564. But it's

  565. not just the

  566. anti-trinity

  567. who will be

  568. in the lake

  569. of fire

  570. tormented

  571. day and

  572. night.

  573. It's also

  574. all of those

  575. who worship

  576. the beast

  577. and receive

  578. its mark.

  579. They are

  580. there too.

  581. And

  582. Revelation

  583. has been

  584. giving us

  585. this very

  586. clear

  587. understanding

  588. over and

  589. over again

  590. that there

  591. are only

  592. two camps

  593. of people.

  594. You are

  595. either sealed

  596. by the

  597. lamb,

  598. bound for

  599. the new

  600. heavens and

  601. the new

  602. earth in

  603. the presence

  604. of God

  605. forever,

  606. or you

  607. are marked

  608. by the

  609. beast.

  610. And

  611. will spend

  612. eternity

  613. apart from

  614. the grace

  615. and mercy

  616. and kindness

  617. and glory

  618. of God,

  619. the one you

  620. were created

  621. to love

  622. and worship.

  623. Only two

  624. kinds of

  625. people.

  626. You're

  627. either sealed

  628. by the

  629. lamb or

  630. you're marked

  631. by the

  632. beast.

  633. And this

  634. text in

  635. the book

  636. of Revelation

  637. tells us

  638. that the

  639. lake of

  640. fire,

  641. which we

  642. could also

  643. describe as

  644. this is

  645. hell,

  646. right?

  647. Just so we're

  648. clear,

  649. this is

  650. hell.

  651. It is a

  652. real place

  653. of everlasting

  654. torment.

  655. Jesus in

  656. Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  657. chapter 25

  658. says that

  659. God has

  660. prepared it

  661. for the

  662. devil and

  663. his angels.

  664. And we

  665. see in

  666. Revelation 14

  667. that it

  668. is those

  669. people who

  670. die apart

  671. from faith

  672. in Jesus

  673. Christ that

  674. they will

  675. go there

  676. too.

  677. And it's

  678. a place

  679. that Jesus

  680. himself says

  681. is a

  682. place of

  683. eternal

  684. punishment.

  685. my shoulders

  686. just kind

  687. of droop

  688. and drop

  689. when I

  690. say these

  691. things.

  692. I think it's

  693. right that this

  694. should be

  695. uncomfortable

  696. for us.

  697. There's no

  698. easy way to

  699. talk about

  700. something that

  701. is so

  702. final

  703. and so

  704. scary to

  705. think about.

  706. God.

  707. But what we

  708. know about

  709. God can

  710. help us

  711. deal with

  712. the discomfort.

  713. It's not

  714. going to

  715. eliminate it.

  716. I don't

  717. have any

  718. pill.

  719. Just take

  720. this and

  721. the discomfort

  722. will go

  723. away.

  724. But what we

  725. know about

  726. God can

  727. help.

  728. Hell is

  729. God's

  730. idea.

  731. This is not

  732. some human

  733. notion that

  734. we've conjured

  735. up to try

  736. and get people

  737. to obey

  738. rules through

  739. fear tactics

  740. and manipulation.

  741. God has

  742. created this

  743. place for the

  744. devil and

  745. his angels.

  746. It's God's

  747. idea.

  748. We know

  749. that God

  750. is holy.

  751. We sang it

  752. this morning.

  753. He's holy

  754. which means

  755. that he's

  756. entirely

  757. distinct and

  758. he's not

  759. corrupted by

  760. sin and

  761. he's not

  762. influenced by

  763. anything bad

  764. or detestable.

  765. It's why in

  766. verse 11 of

  767. our text the

  768. earth and

  769. sky flee

  770. from him

  771. and there's

  772. no place

  773. found for

  774. them.

  775. Because the

  776. one on the

  777. throne is

  778. so holy

  779. that the

  780. creation itself

  781. that's been

  782. corrupted and

  783. stained by

  784. sin just

  785. flees from

  786. his presence.

  787. There's nowhere

  788. for him to

  789. go because

  790. God is

  791. holy.

  792. And God

  793. is good.

  794. God is

  795. good.

  796. We know

  797. that he will

  798. not do

  799. anything

  800. contrary to

  801. his nature.

  802. And we

  803. know that

  804. he's good.

  805. And if you

  806. need to

  807. wonder if

  808. he's good

  809. or not

  810. just look

  811. to the

  812. cross.

  813. You see

  814. the slain

  815. lamb,

  816. God's escape

  817. route from

  818. this judgment.

  819. God is

  820. good.

  821. He's provided

  822. a way or

  823. else none

  824. of us

  825. would have

  826. hope.

  827. He's good.

  828. And so

  829. by faith we

  830. must submit

  831. any of the

  832. discomfort,

  833. any of the

  834. things hard to

  835. stomach about

  836. hell, we must

  837. submit him to

  838. what we know

  839. about God.

  840. He's just,

  841. he's holy,

  842. he's good.

  843. This is his

  844. idea.

  845. It probably

  846. shouldn't make

  847. sense in our

  848. little human

  849. brains how

  850. this all works

  851. out.

  852. But we must

  853. trust him.

  854. We can't do

  855. the opposite.

  856. So there's a

  857. way that folks

  858. at different

  859. points in time

  860. will do

  861. something like

  862. since God is

  863. love, hell

  864. can't be what

  865. so and so

  866. is saying it

  867. is.

  868. If God's

  869. love, he

  870. would not

  871. create a

  872. place like

  873. this.

  874. Right?

  875. But our

  876. text, it's

  877. right here.

  878. We can't

  879. escape it.

  880. God is love

  881. and God did

  882. create a place

  883. like this.

  884. We have to be

  885. able to hold

  886. these things

  887. together.

  888. And where we

  889. don't see how

  890. they meet, we

  891. say, God, I

  892. trust you.

  893. You're good,

  894. you're holy,

  895. you're right,

  896. you're just.

  897. This is hard,

  898. but I believe

  899. you.

  900. I trust you.

  901. There's no

  902. other way that

  903. we can move

  904. forward faithfully

  905. and honestly if

  906. we believe that

  907. this text is

  908. true.

  909. And if it

  910. helps, I was

  911. doing the math

  912. a couple weeks

  913. ago and realized

  914. that by God's

  915. grace, I had

  916. had the opportunity

  917. to preach over

  918. a hundred sermons

  919. downstairs at our

  920. homeless breakfast

  921. on Sunday

  922. mornings.

  923. And most of

  924. those sermons,

  925. I have spoken

  926. of judgment.

  927. I've spoken

  928. of this

  929. terrible place

  930. that unrepentant

  931. sinners will

  932. spend eternity.

  933. It is not

  934. getting easier

  935. to preach that.

  936. It's not.

  937. In fact, it's

  938. getting harder

  939. as I get to

  940. know people

  941. and I see

  942. their faces

  943. and I recognize

  944. their great

  945. need, even

  946. more than they

  947. do.

  948. it doesn't

  949. get easier

  950. to say

  951. hell is real

  952. and you need

  953. to repent.

  954. It's

  955. necessary, right?

  956. If we believe

  957. that this Bible

  958. is true, we

  959. must say these

  960. things to people.

  961. We must warn

  962. them to flee

  963. from wrath.

  964. There's no other

  965. hope than to flee

  966. to Jesus.

  967. So the lake

  968. of fire is a

  969. very real

  970. place that God

  971. will send the

  972. devil and his

  973. angels and

  974. every person

  975. who does not

  976. repent of their

  977. sin and trust

  978. in Jesus

  979. Christ.

  980. So the final

  981. question, how

  982. are the dead

  983. to be judged?

  984. We can see this

  985. in a couple of

  986. verses, in verse

  987. 12 and in

  988. verse 15.

  989. The short

  990. answer is that

  991. books are

  992. opened.

  993. And these

  994. books are

  995. described as

  996. being in

  997. accordance with

  998. what each

  999. person had

  1000. done.

  1001. This phrase

  1002. shows up

  1003. twice, once

  1004. in verse 12

  1005. and once in

  1006. verse 13.

  1007. The dead

  1008. are judged,

  1009. each one of

  1010. them, according

  1011. to what they

  1012. had done.

  1013. This is

  1014. really a

  1015. depiction of

  1016. God's

  1017. exhaustive

  1018. knowledge and

  1019. his instant

  1020. recall of

  1021. each and

  1022. every person's

  1023. life.

  1024. I kind of

  1025. imagine that

  1026. each person

  1027. has a book

  1028. and God's

  1029. perfect memory

  1030. bank of

  1031. saying this

  1032. so-and-so,

  1033. it's got your

  1034. full name,

  1035. your date of

  1036. birth, your

  1037. vitals.

  1038. So-and-so,

  1039. this is his

  1040. or her life.

  1041. God knows it

  1042. perfectly and

  1043. has no trouble

  1044. recalling each

  1045. and every deed,

  1046. thought,

  1047. motive of our

  1048. hearts.

  1049. And that's

  1050. why verse 15

  1051. says that

  1052. if the name

  1053. isn't in the

  1054. book of life,

  1055. they're thrown

  1056. into the lake

  1057. of fire because

  1058. when each one's

  1059. works stand

  1060. alone, they

  1061. only serve to

  1062. condemn us.

  1063. They don't

  1064. give us life.

  1065. We aren't

  1066. justified, we

  1067. aren't granted

  1068. salvation by what

  1069. we have done.

  1070. It's by grace

  1071. alone, through

  1072. faith in Jesus

  1073. alone.

  1074. So that's

  1075. how the dead

  1076. are judged,

  1077. but then notice

  1078. this other book

  1079. shows up.

  1080. This single

  1081. book appears,

  1082. not books

  1083. plural, but

  1084. book in

  1085. verse 12.

  1086. Then another

  1087. book was

  1088. opened, which

  1089. is the book

  1090. of life.

  1091. This book is

  1092. distinct,

  1093. it's unique,

  1094. it's unlike

  1095. these many

  1096. books, that

  1097. we could say

  1098. are books of

  1099. works.

  1100. In this book

  1101. elsewhere in

  1102. Revelation, we

  1103. see that it

  1104. belongs to the

  1105. lamb who was

  1106. slain.

  1107. It's Jesus'

  1108. book.

  1109. In chapter

  1110. 13, verse

  1111. 8, we see

  1112. that it was

  1113. written before

  1114. the foundation

  1115. of the world.

  1116. The ink in

  1117. this book has

  1118. long since

  1119. dried.

  1120. I think it's

  1121. fair to say

  1122. that this

  1123. book is

  1124. highly valued

  1125. by Jesus.

  1126. Not because

  1127. of its

  1128. exquisite

  1129. binding and

  1130. the goat skin

  1131. leather it's

  1132. made of and

  1133. the gold foil

  1134. pages and the

  1135. beautiful calligraphy

  1136. on it.

  1137. It's highly

  1138. prized by

  1139. Jesus because

  1140. it contains

  1141. the names of

  1142. those that

  1143. Jesus has

  1144. bought with

  1145. his own

  1146. blood.

  1147. This book

  1148. is precious

  1149. to our

  1150. Lord because

  1151. if we are

  1152. followers of

  1153. Jesus, our

  1154. name is in

  1155. it.

  1156. Is your

  1157. name in

  1158. this book?

  1159. If it is,

  1160. then worship

  1161. the lamb.

  1162. If your

  1163. name is in

  1164. this book,

  1165. it's because

  1166. Jesus died

  1167. that your

  1168. name would

  1169. be in this

  1170. book.

  1171. If your

  1172. name is in

  1173. this book,

  1174. it's because

  1175. Jesus endured

  1176. the Father's

  1177. wrath so you

  1178. would escape

  1179. the lake

  1180. of fire.

  1181. Can't you

  1182. just imagine

  1183. the joy on

  1184. Jesus' face

  1185. to read your

  1186. name from

  1187. this book?

  1188. It cost him

  1189. so much.

  1190. And he did

  1191. it in love

  1192. to spare us

  1193. from this

  1194. lake of

  1195. fire.

  1196. our name

  1197. must be in

  1198. this book.

  1199. It must be

  1200. in this book.

  1201. If you've

  1202. trusted in

  1203. Christ,

  1204. that his

  1205. death

  1206. saves you

  1207. from wrath,

  1208. that he is

  1209. your righteousness,

  1210. then your

  1211. name's in

  1212. this book.

  1213. It should

  1214. bring gratitude

  1215. and worship

  1216. to us,

  1217. church.

  1218. Remember,

  1219. your name's

  1220. in the book.

  1221. We have a

  1222. great Savior

  1223. who's able

  1224. to save us

  1225. from the

  1226. lake of

  1227. fire.

  1228. But not

  1229. only does

  1230. this help

  1231. us to

  1232. worship God

  1233. for what

  1234. he's done,

  1235. right?

  1236. So now we're

  1237. getting into

  1238. this relationship

  1239. with how does

  1240. this help us

  1241. in our

  1242. relationship

  1243. with Jesus

  1244. today?

  1245. right?

  1246. One,

  1247. it should

  1248. produce this

  1249. overwhelming

  1250. gratitude.

  1251. God spared

  1252. me from

  1253. that?

  1254. Hallelujah.

  1255. But it

  1256. also strengthens

  1257. us to

  1258. persevere

  1259. and to

  1260. one day

  1261. finally conquer.

  1262. conquer.

  1263. We belong to

  1264. the land.

  1265. Jesus is

  1266. making all

  1267. things new.

  1268. And when

  1269. judgment comes,

  1270. we will stand

  1271. in him.

  1272. For a little

  1273. while longer,

  1274. for a little

  1275. farther in this

  1276. journey of life,

  1277. we press on.

  1278. We have

  1279. persistence and

  1280. perseverance and

  1281. endurance to

  1282. conquer and

  1283. overcome because

  1284. Christ has

  1285. conquered and

  1286. overcome for

  1287. us.

  1288. So that's how

  1289. this text helps

  1290. us relate to

  1291. Jesus now.

  1292. Final judgment

  1293. should fill the

  1294. Christian's heart

  1295. with gratitude.

  1296. My name's in

  1297. a book.

  1298. Jesus purchased

  1299. me by his own

  1300. blood.

  1301. And it should

  1302. give you great

  1303. courage and

  1304. strength to

  1305. persevere and

  1306. press on in

  1307. this journey of

  1308. life because God

  1309. is doing away

  1310. with sin.

  1311. New Jerusalem

  1312. is coming.

  1313. How does it

  1314. help us as we

  1315. interact with

  1316. others?

  1317. How does the

  1318. final judgment

  1319. help me interact

  1320. with my enemy?

  1321. Maybe you've

  1322. got this long

  1323. standing hurt.

  1324. Maybe it's a

  1325. long past

  1326. way that

  1327. someone sinned

  1328. against you,

  1329. this deep

  1330. wound that

  1331. just doesn't

  1332. go away and

  1333. you're just

  1334. aware of it.

  1335. Or maybe it's

  1336. an ongoing

  1337. thing that you're

  1338. just being

  1339. mistreated and

  1340. abused in some

  1341. way, whether

  1342. it's verbal or

  1343. even with

  1344. violence or

  1345. whatever else.

  1346. How do you

  1347. how does this

  1348. help us with

  1349. that kind of

  1350. person, my

  1351. enemy?

  1352. We know what's

  1353. coming, right?

  1354. So we've

  1355. heard God

  1356. say, vengeance

  1357. is mine.

  1358. I will

  1359. repay.

  1360. Let me just

  1361. encourage you,

  1362. do not

  1363. callous over.

  1364. Do not

  1365. harden your

  1366. heart toward

  1367. that person.

  1368. We have this

  1369. awful way,

  1370. right, of

  1371. repaying in

  1372. our hearts,

  1373. right?

  1374. Maybe we

  1375. don't, maybe

  1376. someone slaps

  1377. us, we don't

  1378. slap them

  1379. back, but in

  1380. our heart we're

  1381. slapping them

  1382. anyway.

  1383. We can do

  1384. this with

  1385. individuals, we

  1386. can kind of in

  1387. our hearts and

  1388. say, you're

  1389. going to get

  1390. yours, bub, and

  1391. just harden

  1392. over.

  1393. It's not how

  1394. this text helps

  1395. us treat our

  1396. enemy.

  1397. We can do the

  1398. same thing toward

  1399. whole groups of

  1400. people, right?

  1401. Guessing some

  1402. people in the

  1403. room struggle with

  1404. how am I

  1405. supposed to

  1406. show love

  1407. toward the

  1408. gay and

  1409. lesbian community

  1410. for example?

  1411. How am I

  1412. supposed to

  1413. love people who

  1414. are so clearly

  1415. opposed to God

  1416. and his stance

  1417. and view on

  1418. marriage?

  1419. How do we

  1420. avoid saying

  1421. they're going to

  1422. get what they

  1423. deserve and

  1424. just kind of

  1425. harden our

  1426. hearts?

  1427. Well, we

  1428. look to Jesus,

  1429. right?

  1430. We know when

  1431. Jesus looks at

  1432. sinners, he has

  1433. compassion on

  1434. them, right?

  1435. The sheep

  1436. without a

  1437. shepherd and

  1438. he goes toward

  1439. them in love.

  1440. He doesn't

  1441. excuse sin, he

  1442. never condones

  1443. that, but he

  1444. moves towards

  1445. people, he

  1446. moves towards

  1447. his enemies or

  1448. we'd all be

  1449. toast.

  1450. So we

  1451. soften toward

  1452. our enemies

  1453. because judgment

  1454. is not yet and

  1455. God will repay.

  1456. so we soften

  1457. and we

  1458. develop compassion

  1459. and love

  1460. because the

  1461. enemies of God

  1462. will be judged

  1463. and they need

  1464. the gospel,

  1465. period.

  1466. We move

  1467. towards enemies

  1468. and love

  1469. with the good

  1470. news that Jesus

  1471. loves enemies

  1472. enough to die

  1473. for them.

  1474. There's still

  1475. time for sinners

  1476. to repent so

  1477. compassion rules

  1478. the day for

  1479. those of us who

  1480. follow Jesus.

  1481. us.

  1482. That's costly

  1483. but it's

  1484. right.

  1485. So we

  1486. preach Christ

  1487. hoping that

  1488. some of even

  1489. our enemies

  1490. would repent

  1491. so that they

  1492. would be spared

  1493. while we trust

  1494. that if they

  1495. do not repent

  1496. God will

  1497. definitely repay

  1498. them in the

  1499. end.

  1500. It's his to

  1501. judge.

  1502. then I

  1503. saved

  1504. our loved

  1505. ones for

  1506. last.

  1507. When we

  1508. think of

  1509. judgment and

  1510. we have

  1511. faces and

  1512. names of

  1513. friends and

  1514. family who

  1515. we know need

  1516. Christ, who

  1517. we know need

  1518. to repent,

  1519. it can be

  1520. tempting for

  1521. us to soften

  1522. this, to try

  1523. and maybe

  1524. even apologize

  1525. for God or

  1526. excuse this

  1527. and kind of

  1528. say well

  1529. it's kind

  1530. of, we

  1531. can't.

  1532. We can't

  1533. ignore it

  1534. because it's

  1535. difficult.

  1536. We can't

  1537. ignore it

  1538. because it's

  1539. right here.

  1540. God's just

  1541. told us over

  1542. and over and

  1543. over again of

  1544. judgment.

  1545. So we

  1546. can't sweep

  1547. it under the

  1548. rug, we

  1549. can't ignore

  1550. it, think

  1551. it'll go

  1552. away because

  1553. it's not,

  1554. it's coming.

  1555. It's coming

  1556. on those near

  1557. and dear to

  1558. us.

  1559. So it

  1560. ends up being

  1561. quite unloving

  1562. for us to

  1563. ignore or to

  1564. soften it

  1565. because our

  1566. text makes it

  1567. so clear that

  1568. it's coming.

  1569. So in

  1570. counting others

  1571. more significant

  1572. than ourselves,

  1573. we deal with

  1574. the discomfort

  1575. that we feel

  1576. because we

  1577. love other

  1578. people.

  1579. We want them

  1580. to be rescued

  1581. so we keep

  1582. going day

  1583. after day

  1584. after day,

  1585. we keep

  1586. pressing into

  1587. the discomfort

  1588. because our

  1589. loved ones

  1590. need the

  1591. gospel.

  1592. Final judgment

  1593. helps us to

  1594. soften towards

  1595. others and to

  1596. bravely and

  1597. fearfully and

  1598. sacrificially go

  1599. towards other

  1600. people.

  1601. Let it put

  1602. courage in your

  1603. heart, friend,

  1604. to be

  1605. compassionate and

  1606. to share Jesus

  1607. with non-believers

  1608. whether they're

  1609. enemies, whether

  1610. they're strangers,

  1611. whether they're

  1612. near and dear

  1613. loved ones.

  1614. both because we

  1615. believe the gospel

  1616. is big enough

  1617. to welcome even

  1618. enemies into the

  1619. kingdom and

  1620. because we

  1621. believe it's

  1622. mighty enough

  1623. even to save

  1624. those most

  1625. near and dear

  1626. to us regardless

  1627. of the life

  1628. they're currently

  1629. leading.

  1630. Jesus is going

  1631. to carry out

  1632. the final judgment

  1633. on each and

  1634. every person.

  1635. and those

  1636. whose names are

  1637. not found in

  1638. his book of

  1639. life will spend

  1640. eternity in the

  1641. lake of fire.

  1642. We need this.

  1643. We need this to

  1644. be good disciples

  1645. of Jesus and we

  1646. need this to go

  1647. toward others in

  1648. love before it's

  1649. too late.

  1650. So let's pray

  1651. together and ask

  1652. for God's help to

  1653. do that.

  1654. Amen.

  1655. Amen.

  1656. Amen.

  1657. Amen.

  1658. Father we thank

  1659. you for your

  1660. word.

  1661. Even the hard

  1662. word.

  1663. Even the

  1664. uncomfortable

  1665. word and we

  1666. ask God that

  1667. this would

  1668. serve each one

  1669. of us today.

  1670. You would help

  1671. us.

  1672. Help us to

  1673. relate to Jesus

  1674. in light of the

  1675. final judgment

  1676. and help us to

  1677. go towards others

  1678. in love and

  1679. compassion because

  1680. of it.

  1681. God we ask for

  1682. help as a

  1683. church.

  1684. We ask for

  1685. help as

  1686. individuals whether

  1687. it's because

  1688. we're afraid or

  1689. we're angry or

  1690. anything else.

  1691. God would you

  1692. get our hearts

  1693. right when we

  1694. think about

  1695. judgment?

  1696. Would you

  1697. receive glory

  1698. through our

  1699. response to it?

  1700. Help us we

  1701. pray in Jesus

  1702. name.

  1703. Amen.
