  1. Garrick, thank you for reading God's word.

  2. I'm not sure if you all noticed this, but when Garrick was reading,

  3. there was a particular word that got repeated in verse 2 and verse 6.

  4. It was the word shaken.

  5. Shaken.

  6. And I'm guessing this week you had your world shaken.

  7. And I don't know what on the Richter scale of shaking with which you were shook,

  8. but I'm guessing you got your world shaken.

  9. Maybe this is what it looked like.

  10. Something happens and you got really angry.

  11. You vented.

  12. You felt out of control.

  13. You felt disrespected.

  14. You lost your patience and you blew up.

  15. You were shaken.

  16. Or maybe you binged this week sometime.

  17. Eight hour straight of Netflix binge watching.

  18. $800 spent on your credit card.

  19. Binge buying.

  20. 8,000 calories of a comfort food.

  21. Binge eating.

  22. And the question becomes, what started it all?

  23. Why the binging?

  24. Chances are you got your world shaken.

  25. Or maybe you were lying in bed sometime this week, unable to sleep,

  26. and you were lying at 2 a.m. in that isolating silence of the wee hours of the morning.

  27. And you were lying in bed because you were anxious about something.

  28. You were replaying something in your head.

  29. You were trying to figure something out.

  30. You were afraid of some unknown or something that has happened to you.

  31. You got shook.

  32. And it's showing up in the middle of the night.

  33. We all experience varying degrees of the seismic activity of being shaken.

  34. And we need help.

  35. We need help when our lives get shaken, don't we?

  36. And Psalm 62 is good news for those souls who are being shaken.

  37. And so if you've come into the sanctuary this morning and you're like, I know what it means to be shaken,

  38. Psalm 62 is God's kindness to you.

  39. Here, let me sum it up by saying this.

  40. This is the summary of Psalm 62.

  41. When you, when your life is being shaken and you're feeling all alone and all out of control,

  42. you must learn to trust in God alone.

  43. When you're feeling all alone because you're getting your world rocked,

  44. you must learn to trust in God alone.

  45. And so in Psalm 62, there is this process.

  46. It's going to look like this.

  47. I'm going to draw it out a little bit later.

  48. It's, you're going to be shaken and then you're going to need to surrender

  49. and then you're going to find God as your shelter

  50. and then you're going to experience shalom.

  51. You're going to move from being shaken to having to surrender,

  52. finding God as your shelter and then experiencing shalom.

  53. But before we get to that, I just want to give you a brief overview of Psalm 62

  54. and then we'll get into that process and bring it to bear on our lives.

  55. When your life is being shaken and you're feeling alone and out of control,

  56. you must learn how to trust in God alone.

  57. So let me give you a quick overview of Psalm 62.

  58. We learn in Psalm 62 in the very heading that this is a psalm of David, the king,

  59. which is a high position among God's people in Israel.

  60. And then this was written to the choir master.

  61. It's according to Jaduthin.

  62. Most likely it was some kind of melody.

  63. And so David's writing this psalm and he's saying,

  64. Hey, choir master, put this to that music.

  65. It'd be like putting Psalm 62, me saying to Kevin,

  66. Hey, Kevin, let's put Psalm 62 to the tune of Amazing Grace.

  67. For God alone my soul silently waits.

  68. We can do it.

  69. And the reason why it's to be put to music is because it's to be internalized

  70. and called out in singing to give our emotions an opportunity to call out to God.

  71. So this is a psalm by David meant to be sung.

  72. And there are two sections.

  73. Verses 1 through 7, we see David personally responding to something that has shaken his world.

  74. And you see what that is in verses 3 and 4.

  75. How long will all of you attack a man to batter him like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

  76. They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.

  77. They take pleasure in falsehood.

  78. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse.

  79. And what's going on here is there's a group of people that are seeking to verbally attack King David

  80. and undermine him and unseat him.

  81. Was it Absalom?

  82. Well, we're not told here.

  83. We're just guessing.

  84. But he's definitely having his world rocked.

  85. He's definitely being shaken.

  86. But what's interesting is what happens before and after.

  87. In verses 1 and 2, you see David say,

  88. For God alone my soul waits in silence.

  89. From him comes my salvation.

  90. And look at verse 5.

  91. For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence.

  92. For my hope, my salvation is from him.

  93. And then in verse 2,

  94. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress.

  95. I shall not be greatly shaken.

  96. And then verse 6,

  97. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress.

  98. I shall not be shaken, period.

  99. And so what we see David doing, when there is his life being shaken,

  100. He surrenders himself to the Lord.

  101. For God alone my soul waits in silence.

  102. We see that both in verse 1 and verse 5.

  103. That silence I'll come back to in a little bit.

  104. But in both verse 2 and verse 6,

  105. He's talking about God as my rock and my salvation, my fortress.

  106. What we see happening here is David surrendering himself to God

  107. in order to surround this thing that is shaking his life.

  108. And then in verse 7, there is this summary declaration.

  109. On God rests my salvation and my glory, my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

  110. My, my, my, my, my, my.

  111. My God.

  112. God.

  113. He's gotten to a point here while he's now settled on the unshakable God he knows.

  114. And out of that comes this refrain,

  115. I shall not be shaken.

  116. That's a picture of shalom, peace.

  117. So in verses 1 through 7,

  118. David, being shaken,

  119. surrenders himself in order to purposely surround his enemies

  120. with the unshakable truths of who God is,

  121. his shelter.

  122. And as a result,

  123. he experiences shalom.

  124. But it doesn't end there

  125. because we got verses 8 through 12 in Psalm 62.

  126. So David turns from calling on God his refuge

  127. now to calling the people of God

  128. to God their refuge.

  129. He says in verse 8,

  130. Trust in him at all times, O people.

  131. Pour out your heart before him.

  132. God is a refuge for us.

  133. You see that in verse 7?

  134. My refuge is God.

  135. First end of verse 8,

  136. God is a refuge for us.

  137. He wants all of God's people

  138. to experience God as his refuge.

  139. God wants all of us to experience him as our refuge.

  140. But what's interesting then is where he goes.

  141. In verse 9,

  142. David says to God's people,

  143. Hey, don't find shelter in status.

  144. Whether you're of low estate or high estate,

  145. it's not going to matter.

  146. Shelter's not there.

  147. You can't find peace there.

  148. And then in verse 10,

  149. he says,

  150. Hey, don't look for shelter in extortion,

  151. manipulating people.

  152. Don't look for shelter in robbing people,

  153. gaining ill means.

  154. And don't find shelter in increased riches.

  155. Money's not going to give you safety and shelter.

  156. Money's not the source of shalom.

  157. Don't find shelter there.

  158. And then he lands it in 11 and 12.

  159. Once God has spoken,

  160. twice I've heard this.

  161. And he points to three things.

  162. Power belongs to God.

  163. God,

  164. that to you,

  165. O Lord,

  166. belongs steadfast love.

  167. For you will render to a man according to his work.

  168. He reminds us of God's unlimited power,

  169. his unrelenting love,

  170. and his unrivaled sovereignty.

  171. So there's a thumbnail sketch of Psalm 62.

  172. And the whole purpose of it is to help us understand that when we're shaken,

  173. when we're feeling all alone in the shake,

  174. feeling out of control,

  175. we must learn to trust in God alone.

  176. For the rest of the time now,

  177. I want to help you learn the process of waiting on the Lord

  178. when your world is being shaken.

  179. Four steps.

  180. You must recognize when you're being shaken.

  181. Second,

  182. Second,

  183. you must surrender control to God.

  184. Third,

  185. you must rest in God as your shelter.

  186. And then fourth,

  187. delight in the shalom.

  188. When your world is being shaken,

  189. you're feeling all alone and all out of control,

  190. you must learn to trust in God alone.

  191. So let's spend the rest of our time bringing this home.

  192. The first step in this process of learning to wait on the Lord

  193. is recognizing when you're being shaken.

  194. For David to say in verse 2,

  195. I will not be greatly shaken.

  196. And then in verse 6,

  197. I shall not be shaken, period.

  198. You know what that means?

  199. He was being shaken.

  200. He was getting his world rocked.

  201. And like I just said minutes ago,

  202. we know what it was.

  203. There was a group of people

  204. who were seeking to verbally assault David

  205. and undermine him

  206. and unseat him from his high position.

  207. And so,

  208. what we're recognizing there

  209. is David being shaken.

  210. But that's not the only way

  211. that God's people get shaken, is it?

  212. Verbal assaults,

  213. seeking to undermine,

  214. that's not the only way people

  215. will experience being shaken.

  216. I find it interesting that in verse 8,

  217. David's call to all the peoples

  218. is to trust in God at all times.

  219. Because

  220. being shaken

  221. shaken comes at any time.

  222. My sister lives in L.A.

  223. Recently,

  224. there was a couple earthquakes out there.

  225. And so,

  226. what you need to realize,

  227. if you're living in L.A.,

  228. it's not a matter of if

  229. when you're going to get shaken,

  230. it's a matter of when

  231. you're going to get shaken,

  232. because you're living so close

  233. to the San Andreas Fault.

  234. If you're living close

  235. to a fault line,

  236. it's just a matter of time

  237. before you get shaken.

  238. We're all living close

  239. to fault lines.

  240. Fault line of relationships.

  241. Unpredictable shaking can occur,

  242. whether that's in your marriage,

  243. or in your parenting,

  244. or caring for your older parents,

  245. in a working relationship

  246. with your neighbors.

  247. It's a fault line that can shake us,

  248. isn't it?

  249. Your health.

  250. It's like a fault line.

  251. You get an unwelcome diagnosis.

  252. That'll shake your world.

  253. Employment changes suddenly.

  254. That's a shake-up.

  255. Sudden loss of finances.

  256. That shows up on the Richter scale.

  257. Questions about your future.

  258. Unknowns.

  259. What's going to happen?

  260. That can shake you.

  261. These areas represent

  262. different fault lines

  263. that range with different degrees

  264. of seismic activity

  265. because of its unpredictability.

  266. So let me ask you, my friends,

  267. what do you do

  268. when your world gets shaken?

  269. Where do you go?

  270. What do you look to?

  271. Do you get angry

  272. because you feel out of control

  273. and you want to attack?

  274. Do you withdraw?

  275. You want to hide,

  276. and so you binge.

  277. You don't lean on

  278. God's understanding.

  279. You're leaning on your own.

  280. brothers and sisters,

  281. where are you being shaken today?

  282. Where is it?

  283. And how are you responding?

  284. The first step

  285. in learning to wait on the Lord

  286. in the midst of seismic activity

  287. is to recognize

  288. that you're actually being shaken.

  289. The second step

  290. is surrender.

  291. To surrender control

  292. of your life to God

  293. when your world

  294. is being shaken.

  295. This is not as easy

  296. as it sounds

  297. because what's at stake

  298. is your well-being.

  299. What's at stake

  300. is who controls your life.

  301. So in order for you

  302. to surrender to God,

  303. you've got to die to yourself.

  304. Kyle quoted Jeremiah 17, 7 and 8.

  305. 17, 7 says,

  306. Blessed is the man

  307. whose trust is the Lord,

  308. whose trust is the Lord.

  309. 17, 5 says,

  310. Cursed is the man

  311. who trusts the man

  312. who makes flesh his strength.

  313. When we get shook,

  314. it exposes our hearts.

  315. It exposes

  316. what we trust in.

  317. And if you're anything like me,

  318. when I get shaken,

  319. my first instinct

  320. is to trust in myself.

  321. I want to figure it out.

  322. I want to fix it.

  323. I want to control it.

  324. I want to define it.

  325. I want to plan it.

  326. And if it's not working out,

  327. I'm going to blame others.

  328. I'm going to want to hide.

  329. I'm going to want to throw

  330. a pity party.

  331. All of this

  332. is a way of exposing,

  333. trusting in yourself.

  334. But that's not how David

  335. responds in this song.

  336. He's getting verbally assaulted,

  337. undermined,

  338. people seeking to unseat him,

  339. and he doesn't turn to himself.

  340. He trusts God.

  341. He surrenders himself

  342. to the Lord.

  343. Look at verse 1.

  344. For God alone,

  345. my soul waits in silence.

  346. He's trusting God.

  347. Verse 5.

  348. For God alone,

  349. oh my soul,

  350. wait in silence.

  351. There's a difference

  352. between verse 1 and verse 5.

  353. Verse 1 is descriptive.

  354. For God alone,

  355. my soul waits in silence.

  356. And then in verse 5,

  357. for God alone,

  358. speaking to his soul,

  359. for God alone,

  360. oh my soul,

  361. command,

  362. wait in silence.

  363. Wait on him.

  364. When David is shaken,

  365. here,

  366. he does not turn to himself.

  367. He waits on God.

  368. And that means he must

  369. surrender himself to God.

  370. And it's not as easy

  371. as it sounds

  372. because you've got to die

  373. to yourself

  374. and you controlling

  375. your own life.

  376. Did you notice

  377. there's this waiting

  378. in silence?

  379. What does that mean?

  380. For God alone,

  381. my soul waits in silence.

  382. What does that mean

  383. to surrender this way?

  384. To wait in silence?

  385. Is there,

  386. does this mean that David

  387. is not saying anything to God?

  388. I don't think

  389. that's what it means

  390. because in verse 8,

  391. he's going to tell

  392. the peoples

  393. to pour their hearts

  394. out to God.

  395. In fact,

  396. what we see,

  397. what we read in 1 and 2

  398. and 5 and 6

  399. is David pouring out

  400. his heart to God.

  401. So I don't think

  402. this means

  403. he is saying nothing

  404. as he waits.

  405. I think this silence

  406. is more about

  407. what he is feeling.

  408. He's feeling isolated

  409. in the waiting.

  410. He's feeling alone

  411. as his world

  412. gets shaken.

  413. In the midst

  414. of the seismic activity

  415. of relational conflict,

  416. of unwanted health diagnosis,

  417. of unanticipated job change,

  418. of a sudden financial loss,

  419. you can all of a sudden

  420. feel the isolating silence

  421. of being all alone.

  422. It's amazing

  423. how silent

  424. my house gets

  425. at 2 a.m.

  426. in the morning.

  427. I can feel all alone.

  428. We all experience this.

  429. Many of us

  430. don't want to deal

  431. with the silence

  432. and so we turn up

  433. the noise

  434. to try to distract

  435. ourselves.

  436. But brothers and sisters,

  437. God's in the silence.

  438. He's there.

  439. He's using the whole thing

  440. to draw our hearts

  441. to him.

  442. David commands his soul

  443. to wait on the Lord

  444. in silence.

  445. Turn to the Lord,

  446. my soul.

  447. Why so downcast within me?

  448. Hope in God.

  449. Now,

  450. despite the silence,

  451. God's there.

  452. Essentially,

  453. what this is

  454. is a surrender

  455. of one's control,

  456. of one's life

  457. in the midst

  458. of being shaken.

  459. Oftentimes,

  460. it's the last thing

  461. you want to do,

  462. but it's the greatest

  463. thing to do.

  464. To pour out your God

  465. in the midst

  466. of being shaken,

  467. surrendering yourself

  468. this way.

  469. Verse 8,

  470. I already alluded to it.

  471. There's another way

  472. that we wait

  473. on the Lord.

  474. Verse 8,

  475. David says,

  476. to the peoples,

  477. trust in God

  478. at all times.

  479. Pour out your hearts

  480. to him.

  481. To pour out your heart

  482. is a picture of laying

  483. open your soul

  484. to God.

  485. And again,

  486. it is really uncomfortable.

  487. It is really difficult

  488. to pour out

  489. all that you're feeling

  490. to God

  491. before him.

  492. Oftentimes,

  493. what makes this

  494. so difficult

  495. is that when you're

  496. being shaken,

  497. it stirs up

  498. such intense emotions,

  499. it's difficult

  500. to unburden

  501. your emotions

  502. to God.

  503. You feel out

  504. of control.

  505. It's not easy.

  506. A lot of us

  507. are emotionally

  508. unaware.

  509. A lot of us

  510. are emotionally

  511. constipated.

  512. A lot of us

  513. are just

  514. emotionally afraid.

  515. Maybe no one

  516. has ever taught you

  517. or modeled to you

  518. how to deal

  519. with your emotions

  520. or your fears

  521. or your anxieties,

  522. your intense feelings

  523. in a way

  524. that is good

  525. and right

  526. and wise.

  527. And here we are

  528. being told

  529. how to do it.

  530. Pour out your heart

  531. before him.

  532. That's how we trust him.

  533. So this is what

  534. that looks like.

  535. When something

  536. is going sideways

  537. in your life

  538. and you're getting shaken,

  539. a way to surrender

  540. yourself to God

  541. is to say,

  542. God, I am so scared

  543. right now.

  544. God, I am so scared.

  545. God, I am so angry.

  546. God, I am so confused.

  547. God, I feel out of control.

  548. These are the stuff

  549. of laments.

  550. You see it all

  551. throughout the Psalms.

  552. This is how we surrender

  553. to God

  554. to lay control

  555. over to him.

  556. We do so

  557. honestly.

  558. The first step

  559. of waiting on the Lord

  560. when you're in the midst

  561. of seismic activity

  562. is to first recognize

  563. you're in seismic activity.

  564. Your world's getting shaken.

  565. And the second step

  566. is a hard one

  567. because you've got to

  568. die to yourself.

  569. It means

  570. surrendering yourself

  571. to the Lord

  572. through prayer,

  573. pouring your heart out,

  574. waiting on him

  575. in silence.

  576. The third way,

  577. the third step,

  578. after you've surrendered

  579. yourself

  580. to God

  581. is to rest

  582. in God,

  583. to trust

  584. in him,

  585. to

  586. come

  587. under

  588. him.

  589. when you get shaken

  590. and you're all alone

  591. and you feel out of control,

  592. you must learn

  593. how to trust

  594. in God

  595. alone.

  596. Not just to recognize it,

  597. not just to surrender

  598. yourself,

  599. but to actively

  600. trust

  601. to rest

  602. in God.

  603. Did you notice

  604. all the descriptions

  605. of God

  606. in this Psalm?

  607. I love it.

  608. He says my salvation

  609. four times.

  610. He's basically saying,

  611. God,

  612. you are my 911.

  613. rescue me.

  614. Come to my aid.

  615. You're my hope.

  616. He says twice

  617. in verse 2 and 6,

  618. my rock,

  619. verse 7,

  620. my mighty rock.

  621. If you look over

  622. to 61,

  623. 2,

  624. you see another reference.

  625. Lead me to the rock

  626. that is higher than I,

  627. for you've been my refuge,

  628. a strong tower

  629. against the enemy.

  630. It's a picture

  631. of safety,

  632. of shelter.

  633. If you've been

  634. down to the marina

  635. on a windy day

  636. and you're standing

  637. at a point

  638. where you can look

  639. at the lake

  640. and look at the marina,

  641. the boats

  642. and the slips

  643. at the same time,

  644. on a windy day,

  645. the water in the lake

  646. is just a mess.

  647. Splashing.

  648. It's all shaken up.

  649. Simultaneously,

  650. you look over

  651. into the harbor

  652. and the water

  653. where the boats sit

  654. is like a bathtub.

  655. Do you know the difference?

  656. Those mighty rocks

  657. piled up.

  658. It's a break.

  659. It's a jetty.

  660. It's a shelter.

  661. It's safety.

  662. So it's possible

  663. during a shake-up

  664. when everything else

  665. is going crazy,

  666. you can find

  667. shelter in God

  668. and your waters

  669. be still.

  670. My rock,

  671. my mighty rock,

  672. my fortress.

  673. I don't know

  674. what the Lord of the Rings,

  675. what that giant

  676. white city is

  677. up on those

  678. huge cliff face,

  679. but that's

  680. the fortress image.

  681. Safety,

  682. protection.

  683. God is my fortress.

  684. Verse 2 and verse 6.

  685. And then in verse 7,

  686. David says,

  687. God is my refuge,

  688. my shelter,

  689. and ever-present help

  690. in time of trouble,

  691. 46.1.

  692. All these descriptions

  693. point to God

  694. as an unshakable

  695. shelter.

  696. Rocks,

  697. fortresses,

  698. refuge,

  699. unshakable

  700. shelter.

  701. But let's ask

  702. a question.

  703. What makes God

  704. so unshakable?

  705. What is the stuff

  706. about God

  707. that makes Him

  708. unshakable?

  709. Why

  710. should I trust

  711. in God?

  712. Not because of

  713. how He's described.

  714. described.

  715. Why is He

  716. described that way?

  717. And in verses 11

  718. and 12,

  719. we're told why.

  720. Once God

  721. has spoken,

  722. twice have I

  723. heard this.

  724. It's a Hebrew

  725. way of saying,

  726. listen up.

  727. That power

  728. belongs to God.

  729. Unlimited

  730. power

  731. belongs to God.

  732. Think about it.

  733. Genesis 1,

  734. creation.

  735. God speaks

  736. and things

  737. come into existence

  738. that never existed.

  739. That's power.

  740. Think of Jesus.

  741. John 11

  742. walks up

  743. to Lazarus'

  744. tomb.

  745. It's been days.

  746. His corpse

  747. stinks.

  748. Jesus says,

  749. Lazarus,

  750. come forth.

  751. And Lazarus

  752. comes forth.

  753. Power!

  754. Unlimited

  755. power.

  756. Jesus on

  757. the seas.

  758. It's raging.

  759. He says,

  760. be quiet!

  761. Bathwater.

  762. Power.

  763. Jesus'

  764. own resurrection

  765. from the dead

  766. in which He has

  767. victory over

  768. sin, death,

  769. and the devil.

  770. Power!

  771. When Jesus

  772. comes back

  773. and He makes

  774. all things new

  775. and unshakable

  776. shalom in the

  777. new heavens

  778. and the new earth.

  779. Power!

  780. That's your God.

  781. love.

  782. That's your shelter.

  783. That's God

  784. and why you can

  785. trust Him.

  786. But that's not

  787. the only thing.

  788. And that to you,

  789. O Lord,

  790. belongs

  791. steadfast love.

  792. Not only

  793. is our God,

  794. our shelter,

  795. a God of

  796. unlimited power,

  797. He's a God

  798. of unrelenting

  799. love.

  800. Unrelenting.

  801. It's steadfast love.

  802. It's the Hebrew

  803. chesed,

  804. His covenant

  805. loyalty.

  806. He binds

  807. Himself to a

  808. people and

  809. says,

  810. I'm going to

  811. be faithful

  812. to you no

  813. matter what.

  814. I'm going to

  815. be committed.

  816. I'm going to

  817. love you

  818. forever and

  819. ever and

  820. ever.

  821. The greatest

  822. example,

  823. of course,

  824. of God's

  825. unrelenting,

  826. steadfast love

  827. is the cross

  828. of Jesus Christ.

  829. But God

  830. demonstrates His

  831. own love

  832. towards us

  833. in that while

  834. we were yet

  835. sinners,

  836. Christ died

  837. for us.

  838. It's a

  839. demonstration of

  840. His love.

  841. And at the

  842. cross,

  843. God in

  844. Christ dealt

  845. with the

  846. greatest

  847. spiritual

  848. earthquake and

  849. threat we

  850. could ever

  851. experience,

  852. God's hostility

  853. towards us for

  854. our sin.

  855. And Jesus

  856. bore it all

  857. and brought

  858. peace for

  859. us because

  860. He loves us.

  861. I just want

  862. to remind you

  863. something.

  864. God doesn't

  865. love you,

  866. Christian,

  867. because of

  868. your obedience.

  869. God loves

  870. you,

  871. Christian,

  872. because He's

  873. God.

  874. It flows

  875. out of Him.

  876. It's not

  877. dependent on

  878. your obedience

  879. to Him.

  880. When you

  881. realize this

  882. kind of love,

  883. you just want

  884. to obey Him

  885. though.

  886. So don't

  887. think like you

  888. become a

  889. Christian,

  890. okay,

  891. God loved

  892. me to save

  893. me and then

  894. God turns

  895. off the

  896. spigot of

  897. His love.

  898. love.

  899. No,

  900. He saves

  901. you by

  902. His love

  903. and then

  904. He's faithful

  905. all the way

  906. through,

  907. all the way

  908. to the end

  909. because He

  910. loves you.

  911. Unrelenting,

  912. unstoppable.

  913. And His love

  914. governs His power.

  915. His commitment

  916. to you

  917. governs all

  918. of the power

  919. that He has

  920. for your

  921. good.

  922. That's our

  923. shelter.

  924. But there's

  925. one more

  926. thing I want

  927. you to see.

  928. For you

  929. will render

  930. to a man

  931. according to

  932. his work

  933. sovereignty.

  934. God's

  935. unrivaled

  936. sovereignty.

  937. God is

  938. in control

  939. of all

  940. things.

  941. Remember

  942. in our study

  943. of the book

  944. of Revelation,

  945. Revelation 1,

  946. Jesus has

  947. got the keys.

  948. He's got

  949. all the keys.

  950. He's got

  951. all authority.

  952. Jesus sits

  953. on the throne.

  954. Jesus breaks

  955. all the seals

  956. to that

  957. great scroll

  958. of God's

  959. plan for

  960. the fullness

  961. of time.

  962. He's over

  963. it all.

  964. All things

  965. under His feet.

  966. He's in control

  967. of it all.

  968. Which means

  969. this.

  970. He's even

  971. in control

  972. of what

  973. shakes you.

  974. He allows

  975. it or

  976. causes it

  977. and the

  978. reason why

  979. He does

  980. is because

  981. He loves

  982. you and

  983. He wants

  984. you to

  985. trust Him.

  986. Wants you

  987. to learn

  988. to come

  989. under His

  990. care,

  991. to pour out

  992. your heart

  993. to Him,

  994. to learn

  995. of Him.

  996. In God's

  997. economy of

  998. things,

  999. your heart

  1000. being satisfied

  1001. in Him

  1002. alone is

  1003. far more

  1004. valuable to Him

  1005. than your

  1006. comfort.

  1007. So He

  1008. uses

  1009. shake-ups

  1010. to cause

  1011. you to

  1012. come to

  1013. Him,

  1014. to surrender

  1015. and find

  1016. shelter

  1017. in the

  1018. God of

  1019. unlimited

  1020. power,

  1021. unrelenting

  1022. love,

  1023. and unrivaled

  1024. sovereignty.

  1025. Did you notice

  1026. the word

  1027. my?

  1028. My

  1029. salvation,

  1030. my rock,

  1031. my fortress,

  1032. my refuge.

  1033. this God

  1034. is David's

  1035. God.

  1036. He has

  1037. bound

  1038. Himself to

  1039. David,

  1040. coveted

  1041. Himself to

  1042. David,

  1043. and Jesus

  1044. has bound

  1045. Himself to

  1046. us.

  1047. He's made

  1048. a covenant

  1049. with us.

  1050. He'll never

  1051. leave us

  1052. nor forsake

  1053. us.

  1054. That's why

  1055. we can say

  1056. He is

  1057. my salvation

  1058. and my rock,

  1059. my fortress,

  1060. my refuge.

  1061. It's a

  1062. blood-bought

  1063. my.

  1064. I just

  1065. need to

  1066. say this

  1067. because it's

  1068. in the

  1069. text.

  1070. David warns

  1071. us,

  1072. in light of

  1073. your shelter,

  1074. who it

  1075. is,

  1076. unlimited

  1077. power,

  1078. unrelenting

  1079. love,

  1080. unrivaled

  1081. sovereignty,

  1082. don't trust,

  1083. verse 9,

  1084. in status,

  1085. trying to

  1086. get a

  1087. position.

  1088. You're not

  1089. going to

  1090. find shelter

  1091. for your

  1092. soul there.

  1093. Whether it's

  1094. low estate

  1095. or high

  1096. estate,

  1097. it's all

  1098. lighter than

  1099. a breath

  1100. in God's

  1101. economy

  1102. things.

  1103. He says

  1104. in verse

  1105. 10,

  1106. put no

  1107. trust in

  1108. extortion,

  1109. set no

  1110. vain hopes

  1111. on robbery,

  1112. if riches

  1113. increase,

  1114. set not

  1115. your hope

  1116. on them.

  1117. Hey,

  1118. don't find

  1119. shelter in

  1120. you trying

  1121. to manipulate

  1122. something.

  1123. Find

  1124. shelter in

  1125. God,

  1126. unlimited

  1127. power,

  1128. unrelenting

  1129. love,

  1130. unrivaled

  1131. sovereignty.

  1132. Rest

  1133. in your

  1134. shelter.

  1135. Trust

  1136. in God's

  1137. character

  1138. and you

  1139. will find

  1140. shalom.

  1141. You recognize

  1142. when you're

  1143. being shaken,

  1144. you surrender

  1145. to God in

  1146. the midst

  1147. of it and

  1148. then you

  1149. rest in

  1150. God's

  1151. character and

  1152. as a result

  1153. there is

  1154. shalom.

  1155. Shalom is

  1156. the Hebrew

  1157. word that

  1158. means peace

  1159. and it's

  1160. just not

  1161. the absence

  1162. of hostility,

  1163. it's the

  1164. fullness of

  1165. goodness,

  1166. God's goodness,

  1167. God's blessing.

  1168. So when

  1169. David goes

  1170. from saying

  1171. in verse

  1172. two,

  1173. I shall

  1174. not be

  1175. greatly

  1176. shaken

  1177. to saying

  1178. in verse

  1179. six,

  1180. I shall

  1181. not be

  1182. shaken

  1183. period,

  1184. what that

  1185. shows us

  1186. is a

  1187. progress

  1188. in David's

  1189. experience

  1190. of God's

  1191. shalom

  1192. in his

  1193. life.

  1194. It should

  1195. give you

  1196. some

  1197. encouragement.

  1198. You can

  1199. experience

  1200. more of

  1201. God's

  1202. peace.

  1203. What I

  1204. want you

  1205. to see

  1206. here is

  1207. that

  1208. shalom

  1209. is the

  1210. result

  1211. of trusting

  1212. God.

  1213. It's the

  1214. result of

  1215. trusting God.

  1216. It's the

  1217. result of

  1218. finding

  1219. shelter

  1220. in your

  1221. unshakable

  1222. God.

  1223. So when

  1224. stuff goes

  1225. sideways

  1226. and you're

  1227. like,

  1228. oh Lord,

  1229. just give

  1230. me peace.

  1231. God is

  1232. saying,

  1233. I want

  1234. to give

  1235. you

  1236. me.

  1237. I want

  1238. you to

  1239. trust me

  1240. and shalom

  1241. will come.

  1242. Isaiah

  1243. 26,

  1244. three,

  1245. you keep

  1246. him in

  1247. perfect

  1248. peace

  1249. whose

  1250. mind

  1251. is stayed

  1252. on you

  1253. because he

  1254. trusts in

  1255. you.

  1256. Kyle's

  1257. name and

  1258. blessed is

  1259. the man

  1260. who trusts

  1261. in the

  1262. Lord,

  1263. whose

  1264. trust

  1265. is the

  1266. Lord.

  1267. That's

  1268. what that's

  1269. talking about.

  1270. Shalom is

  1271. the result

  1272. of trusting

  1273. in God.

  1274. God.

  1275. When your

  1276. world is

  1277. being shaken

  1278. and you're

  1279. feeling all

  1280. alone and

  1281. out of

  1282. control,

  1283. you must

  1284. learn to

  1285. trust in

  1286. God alone.

  1287. He is your

  1288. unshakable

  1289. shelter.

  1290. shelter.

  1291. When you

  1292. do,

  1293. you will be

  1294. able to

  1295. say this,

  1296. because God

  1297. is my

  1298. refuge,

  1299. I shall

  1300. not be

  1301. shaken.

  1302. Though the

  1303. lake

  1304. waters

  1305. rage,

  1306. I'm in a

  1307. safe

  1308. marina.

  1309. My waters

  1310. are still.

  1311. we live

  1312. on the

  1313. fault

  1314. lines,

  1315. brothers and

  1316. sisters,

  1317. and the

  1318. best thing

  1319. that you

  1320. can do

  1321. when you

  1322. are being

  1323. shaken

  1324. is to

  1325. recognize

  1326. it,

  1327. to surrender

  1328. yourself,

  1329. to find

  1330. shelter in

  1331. God the

  1332. Most High,

  1333. and then

  1334. to give

  1335. thanks for

  1336. the shalom,

  1337. because it's

  1338. not going to

  1339. last,

  1340. because you

  1341. live on

  1342. fault lines.

  1343. this side

  1344. of Christ's

  1345. return.

  1346. This morning

  1347. we've looked

  1348. at four

  1349. steps of

  1350. what it

  1351. means to

  1352. wait on

  1353. the Lord

  1354. when there

  1355. is seismic

  1356. activity in

  1357. your life.

  1358. We live

  1359. on the

  1360. fault lines,

  1361. and when

  1362. our world

  1363. is shaken,

  1364. and you're

  1365. feeling all

  1366. alone,

  1367. trust in

  1368. God alone.

  1369. and we

  1370. help each

  1371. other that

  1372. way too.

  1373. Brother,

  1374. sister,

  1375. trust in

  1376. God at

  1377. all times.

  1378. Pour out

  1379. your heart

  1380. before him.

  1381. God is a

  1382. refuge for

  1383. us.

  1384. Let's

  1385. pray.

  1386. God in

  1387. heaven,

  1388. thank you

  1389. so much

  1390. for Psalm

  1391. 62.

  1392. God,

  1393. would you

  1394. use these

  1395. words now,

  1396. and would

  1397. you attend

  1398. to the

  1399. hearts in

  1400. this room,

  1401. those hearts

  1402. that are

  1403. being shaken.

  1404. God,

  1405. would you

  1406. cause your

  1407. word now

  1408. to go

  1409. and bring

  1410. shalom,

  1411. a shalom

  1412. that is the

  1413. result of

  1414. trusting you,

  1415. our great

  1416. God and

  1417. shelter.

  1418. Amen.

  1419. Amen.

  1420. Amen.

  1421. Amen.
