  1. Well, I woke up before 5 a.m. one morning this week with the television still on.

  2. I sometimes will keep it on as I'm having trouble falling asleep,

  3. and it just helps me to kind of zone out.

  4. This infomercial was on for LifeLock.

  5. Identity theft prevention and this company who will restore people

  6. who've had their identities stolen.

  7. We know that it can, maybe some of you experience this,

  8. where you've had money or private information taken from somebody.

  9. Your identity has been stolen.

  10. Well, in a similar way, the Christians in Galatia are under attack,

  11. and the threat for their Christian identity in Christ is threatening to be stolen.

  12. These Judaizers are claiming to be the true people of God

  13. and calling these Gentile Christians to come underneath the law

  14. so that you too may be true people of God and find salvation.

  15. And the Galatian Christians are buying it hook, line, and sinker.

  16. In fact, they're compelled to listen to these Judaizers,

  17. and they're persuaded by their thieving opponents.

  18. Paul recognizes this.

  19. He recognizes what's at stake,

  20. and he comes writing this letter saying that salvation in Jesus Christ alone,

  21. through faith alone, is at stake, church.

  22. And so, as we've been seeing for the last few weeks,

  23. starting in chapter 3,

  24. Paul's laying this rebuke down on the Galatian church

  25. because they're in danger of abandoning the freedom in Christ

  26. only through the gospel

  27. to become slaves underneath the law.

  28. And he's been doing so with the spiritual life lock,

  29. the gospel.

  30. So that's where we find ourselves today in our passage.

  31. Paul's continuing to sharply rebuke and correct the Galatian Christians

  32. by reminding them of their true identity and freedom in Jesus,

  33. and by exposing the identity of these Judaizing thieves

  34. for who they really are, slaves.

  35. So Paul's going to build his argument

  36. throughout the final 11 verses of chapter 4

  37. and then reveal his purpose in chapter 5, verse 1.

  38. So that's how we're going to walk through the passage.

  39. We're going to look at three kind of increasing contrasts

  40. and conclude with the command of 5, verse 1.

  41. So three contrasts and the command.

  42. The first contrast we see is found in verses 21 to 23.

  43. And Paul's going to use this history lesson

  44. to present this contrast.

  45. So remember where we left off last week.

  46. The last thing that Paul says in verse 20 of chapter 4 is,

  47. I'm perplexed about you, Galatians.

  48. And so what we're going to do in our passage is he's going to say,

  49. here's why I'm perplexed.

  50. Essentially, it's because they're surrendering their freedom.

  51. It's only found in Christ for slavery to the law,

  52. for this man-made sort of our own strength righteousness

  53. that provides nothing but slavery.

  54. Paul begins in verse 21 with a question.

  55. Tell me, you who desire to be under the law,

  56. do you not listen to the law?

  57. Now, as Paul often does, this isn't really a question.

  58. He's actually kind of continuing this rebuke

  59. through a rhetorical question.

  60. You're actually not listening to the law

  61. because if you were, you wouldn't be doing what you're doing.

  62. And this is started back in chapter 3, verse 1,

  63. where he says,

  64. O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you?

  65. And his reasoning is found as we keep kind of tracing his argument

  66. a couple more spots.

  67. 3, verse 10, Paul says,

  68. Those who rely on works of the law are under a curse.

  69. And in chapter 3, 21 and 22,

  70. Paul continues by saying,

  71. If a law had been given that could give life,

  72. then righteousness would indeed be through the law.

  73. But the Scriptures imprisoned everything

  74. until Jesus, the promised offspring of Abraham, would come.

  75. And in 4, verse 9, Paul says,

  76. How can you turn back

  77. to the weak and worthless things of the world

  78. whose slaves you want to be once more?

  79. So you see, this isn't really a question in verse 21.

  80. It means you're not listening to the law, Galatians,

  81. or you wouldn't be headed down this path of no return into slavery.

  82. And it's interesting what he calls them.

  83. You who desire to be under the law.

  84. And this is a really loaded term.

  85. And what he means by it is saying,

  86. You folks are trying to justify yourselves.

  87. You're trying to create this man-made,

  88. flesh-sustaining righteousness.

  89. And there is no such thing.

  90. The law was not given for this purpose.

  91. And the question that Paul raises

  92. then leads into this history lesson

  93. in verses 22 and 23.

  94. It says, Abraham, you know him well,

  95. he had two sons.

  96. Now the overarching purpose

  97. of Paul's history lesson here is this.

  98. He wants to start this contrast.

  99. And in the history lesson,

  100. he's going to contrast two sons.

  101. In the middle section of the passage,

  102. he's going to contrast two cities.

  103. In the final portion of the passage,

  104. he's going to contrast two groups of people.

  105. So the contrast is getting more and more defined as he goes.

  106. Essentially, he's getting to the question,

  107. he's getting to the root of the issue.

  108. Whose gospel is legitimate?

  109. Is Paul's gospel the one true gospel,

  110. or is it the Judaizer's gospel?

  111. Who are the true inheritors

  112. of God's rich inheritance?

  113. The Judaizers who are saying,

  114. you must keep this law,

  115. you must be circumcised,

  116. you must enjoy and benefit from the Jewish calendar,

  117. or is it Paul saying,

  118. Christ alone through faith alone?

  119. Who truly are God's people?

  120. That's what's at stake.

  121. So we remember the story of Abraham

  122. back in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  123. God called a man named Abram,

  124. leave your country,

  125. and I will show you this new land

  126. where I'm going to take you.

  127. And the reason that I'm asking you to leave

  128. is because I'm going to make you this great nation.

  129. And a little while later in this story,

  130. God says,

  131. through your offspring,

  132. I'm going to bless all the nations.

  133. Well, the only problem with that is Sarah,

  134. Abraham's wife, is barren.

  135. She's not able to give Abraham a child.

  136. So this promise that God has made

  137. seems to be in danger of never coming to pass.

  138. No offspring, no great nation.

  139. No offspring, no blessing to the nations.

  140. So Abraham and Sarah,

  141. they get this really great idea.

  142. Well, you know,

  143. when we went down to Egypt

  144. during that famine,

  145. we got this Egyptian slave girl, Hagar,

  146. and we brought her back.

  147. And Abraham,

  148. why don't you go sleep with Hagar?

  149. And she can get pregnant

  150. and she can birth the son

  151. that God promised to us.

  152. So as the story goes,

  153. that's what they do.

  154. And Hagar conceives

  155. and Ishmael is born.

  156. But of course we know

  157. that this was not God's plan

  158. to fulfill the promise

  159. He made to Abraham.

  160. So God says,

  161. no, no, no, no, no.

  162. Abraham, you don't get it.

  163. Sarah, you don't get it.

  164. Sarah will bear you a son.

  165. And this is both hilarious

  166. and inconceivable.

  167. By this point,

  168. these two are getting up in years.

  169. Sarah's never been able to conceive.

  170. But God works a miracle.

  171. At 90 years old,

  172. Sarah gives birth to Isaac,

  173. the child of promise.

  174. This is a story

  175. that Paul is calling to mind

  176. in Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  177. Notice the contrast.

  178. Verse 22,

  179. the contrast is,

  180. one son was from a slave woman.

  181. The other was born by a free woman.

  182. And he heightens the contrast

  183. a little bit in verse 23.

  184. And this is really where he's driving.

  185. One was born according to the flesh.

  186. The other was born through a promise.

  187. This contrast is extremely important

  188. to Paul's argument

  189. through this whole passage.

  190. So it's worth taking

  191. a little bit of time

  192. to think it through.

  193. What exactly does Paul mean

  194. when he says,

  195. in verse 23,

  196. according to the flesh?

  197. Well, in one sense,

  198. this just means

  199. the very natural way

  200. that children are born.

  201. Right?

  202. We don't have to get

  203. into the details of that.

  204. People are able

  205. to naturally become parents,

  206. typically,

  207. without any outside

  208. additional effort.

  209. This is man's effort.

  210. But that's kind of

  211. what's hinting

  212. at this deeper spiritual

  213. and theological reality

  214. for Paul.

  215. Saying,

  216. see,

  217. we can accomplish this

  218. in most situations

  219. by our own strength.

  220. Human wisdom

  221. and a fertile Hagar

  222. equals Ishmael.

  223. There's no more need.

  224. This is human strength.

  225. Right?

  226. We know.

  227. We know that we default

  228. to this kind of thinking

  229. spiritually all the time.

  230. Right?

  231. This is our default thinking.

  232. By my good works

  233. and my self-effort,

  234. I will justify myself

  235. before God.

  236. I will stand before God

  237. one day,

  238. completely approved of Him

  239. because I did it.

  240. And Paul's saying,

  241. no.

  242. In fact,

  243. all along,

  244. he's been telling

  245. the Galatians

  246. over and over,

  247. it's much better news

  248. the gospel brings.

  249. Listen to verses 4 and 5

  250. of chapter 4.

  251. But when the fullness

  252. of time had come,

  253. God sent forth His Son

  254. born of woman,

  255. born under the law

  256. to redeem those

  257. who were under the law

  258. so that we might receive

  259. adoption as sons

  260. and as daughters.

  261. See, the point Paul's been

  262. making all along

  263. is that it's God

  264. who freely gives

  265. righteousness

  266. to those who trust

  267. in Jesus Christ,

  268. the one who lived

  269. the one who lived

  270. a perfect life

  271. under the law,

  272. the one who died

  273. in the place of sinners

  274. for our sin,

  275. and the one who was raised

  276. in victory

  277. over sin and death.

  278. Paul's argument is,

  279. look,

  280. we measure up

  281. only because Jesus

  282. measures up for us

  283. and we are in Him.

  284. So that's Paul's

  285. ultimate purpose

  286. in the history lesson

  287. and he's going to

  288. drive it home

  289. as we keep going.

  290. But he's contrasting

  291. man's effort

  292. with God's promise

  293. and power

  294. to fulfill

  295. His promise.

  296. It has everything

  297. to do with salvation,

  298. doesn't it?

  299. Self-effort

  300. is never ever

  301. going to save us.

  302. Just how self-effort

  303. was never ever

  304. going to get Abraham

  305. and Sarah a child

  306. through a barren

  307. old woman.

  308. Only God's power

  309. in Christ

  310. can make us righteous.

  311. So that's the first

  312. contrast between

  313. these two sons.

  314. Now we move

  315. to the second contrast

  316. found in verses

  317. 24 to 27.

  318. Paul's going to

  319. contrast two cities

  320. but he gets a little bit

  321. technical and tricky.

  322. But essentially,

  323. here's what Paul

  324. wants to do.

  325. He wants to repurpose

  326. the story

  327. from Genesis 12

  328. to 21

  329. to say,

  330. let me tell you

  331. who else

  332. is a slave.

  333. And let me tell you

  334. who else

  335. is giving birth

  336. to free people.

  337. So in verse 24

  338. we see Paul write

  339. this interesting word.

  340. This may be

  341. interpreted allegorically.

  342. There's been a lot

  343. of argument

  344. about what this

  345. means but

  346. let me try and

  347. illustrate my best

  348. understanding of it.

  349. There's one fall

  350. a few years ago

  351. it was really windy

  352. and we came home

  353. from running errands

  354. back into our driveway

  355. and here

  356. lays this blue

  357. plastic

  358. kiddie pool

  359. sitting in our

  360. front yard.

  361. I didn't think

  362. much of it.

  363. I kind of just

  364. well it's got to

  365. get out of the yard

  366. so I threw it

  367. in our shed.

  368. A couple years

  369. later

  370. another fall

  371. we're raking

  372. leaves

  373. from our

  374. half acre

  375. property

  376. that's lined

  377. with these

  378. big oak trees.

  379. I think

  380. we've got to

  381. get the leaves

  382. from the far

  383. back corner

  384. of our property

  385. up to the

  386. front curb

  387. so the village

  388. can bring by

  389. their vacuum

  390. trucks and get

  391. rid of these

  392. leaves.

  393. And I think

  394. aha

  395. I'm going to

  396. repurpose

  397. this blue

  398. kiddie pool

  399. to be a

  400. leaf transport

  401. vessel.

  402. And I did

  403. and it worked.

  404. The next year

  405. I even added

  406. a tow rope

  407. so I didn't

  408. have to stoop

  409. down and kind

  410. of bend

  411. awkwardly.

  412. I could just

  413. walk like I

  414. was plowing a

  415. field like an

  416. ox would.

  417. And it works

  418. great.

  419. It's still a

  420. swimming pool

  421. but I've

  422. repurposed it

  423. for a different

  424. task.

  425. And that's

  426. what Paul's

  427. doing by

  428. referring now

  429. to the

  430. allegory of

  431. this story.

  432. And like I

  433. was saying

  434. he's going

  435. to move

  436. through talking

  437. about the

  438. two moms

  439. associating

  440. them with

  441. sort of two

  442. different

  443. covenants

  444. and ultimately

  445. associating them

  446. with two

  447. different

  448. Jerusalems.

  449. Those are the

  450. two cities

  451. that he wants

  452. to get us

  453. and our eyes

  454. and our minds

  455. around.

  456. There's a here

  457. and now

  458. Jerusalem.

  459. He's saying

  460. to the Galatians

  461. you guys can

  462. find it on a

  463. map.

  464. You can go

  465. visit.

  466. You can get

  467. the tinker

  468. toy tourist

  469. things and

  470. bring them

  471. home.

  472. And then

  473. there's this

  474. heavenly Jerusalem

  475. this above

  476. Jerusalem.

  477. You can't

  478. go visit

  479. that.

  480. There's no

  481. bus that

  482. takes you

  483. there.

  484. So notice

  485. the contrast.

  486. First in

  487. verses 24

  488. and 25

  489. look what

  490. Paul is

  491. going to

  492. assign to

  493. Hagar.

  494. Remember

  495. she's the

  496. slave

  497. sort of

  498. wife of

  499. Abraham

  500. who gives

  501. birth to

  502. the slave

  503. son Ishmael.

  504. He says

  505. Hagar

  506. is

  507. Mount

  508. Sinai.

  509. She's

  510. bearing

  511. children

  512. for slavery

  513. and she

  514. corresponds

  515. to present

  516. day

  517. Jerusalem.

  518. This is

  519. the center

  520. of the

  521. Israelite

  522. religion.

  523. Giving

  524. birth

  525. to

  526. slaves.

  527. His argument

  528. is this.

  529. Hagar

  530. birthed

  531. the slave

  532. son according

  533. to the

  534. flesh.

  535. Present

  536. Jerusalem

  537. is

  538. birthing

  539. slave

  540. children

  541. according

  542. to the

  543. flesh.

  544. Because

  545. they're

  546. trying to

  547. get people

  548. to submit

  549. to a

  550. law

  551. that

  552. cannot

  553. save.

  554. In

  555. verse 26

  556. then Paul

  557. moves from

  558. the first

  559. woman

  560. covenant

  561. city

  562. to the

  563. second.

  564. He skips

  565. over the

  566. kind of

  567. comparisons

  568. of Sarah

  569. and this

  570. and that

  571. and the

  572. other thing

  573. and just

  574. goes straight

  575. to the

  576. Jerusalem

  577. above

  578. is free.

  579. She

  580. is our

  581. mother.

  582. Paul's

  583. argument is

  584. very similar

  585. in this

  586. one.

  587. See Sarah

  588. birthed

  589. free Isaac

  590. through God's

  591. promise and

  592. his power

  593. to fulfill

  594. that promise.

  595. The

  596. Jerusalem

  597. above

  598. aka heaven

  599. is birthing

  600. free sons

  601. and daughters

  602. of the

  603. father

  604. through that

  605. same promise

  606. and the

  607. same power

  608. of God.

  609. Why would

  610. Paul be

  611. doing this?

  612. If we

  613. remember from

  614. the

  615. gospels

  616. and you

  617. may have

  618. even read

  619. it in your

  620. bulletin

  621. this morning

  622. there's

  623. always been

  624. this claim

  625. from the

  626. Jewish folks

  627. that we're

  628. offspring of

  629. Abraham.

  630. We're

  631. children of

  632. the promise

  633. all of this

  634. belongs to

  635. us.

  636. And this

  637. certainly would

  638. be part of

  639. the Judaizers

  640. claim.

  641. See we're

  642. children of

  643. Abraham.

  644. We have

  645. the authority

  646. to call you

  647. to submit

  648. to this

  649. law.

  650. And Paul

  651. is saying

  652. you've got

  653. the wrong

  654. mom.

  655. You're

  656. children of

  657. the slave

  658. woman.

  659. Who's still

  660. giving birth

  661. to slaves.

  662. You see the

  663. contrast here.

  664. The flesh

  665. versus the

  666. promise.

  667. Slavery

  668. versus free.

  669. Present

  670. Jerusalem

  671. versus the

  672. above

  673. Jerusalem.

  674. Paul's

  675. saying DNA

  676. human effort

  677. doesn't make

  678. you a son

  679. of Abraham.

  680. Your biology

  681. and family

  682. tree don't

  683. make you a

  684. son of

  685. Abraham.

  686. Promise

  687. makes you

  688. children of

  689. Abraham.

  690. Paul says

  691. as much at

  692. the end of

  693. chapter 3

  694. in verse

  695. 29.

  696. If you look

  697. at that and

  698. listen to it.

  699. And if you

  700. are Christ's

  701. then you are

  702. Abraham's

  703. offspring.

  704. Heirs

  705. according to

  706. promise.

  707. See the only

  708. way that you

  709. truly become

  710. Abraham's

  711. offspring is if

  712. you are in

  713. Christ.

  714. That you've

  715. put your

  716. faith and

  717. your trust

  718. in him

  719. for salvation.

  720. That's how

  721. you become

  722. children of

  723. promise.

  724. It's through

  725. Jesus.

  726. There's one

  727. more step

  728. that Paul

  729. takes in

  730. this repurposing

  731. section and

  732. it's verse

  733. 27.

  734. Essentially

  735. he's answering

  736. the question

  737. well Paul

  738. you know

  739. okay so

  740. you're saying

  741. this stuff

  742. but where

  743. does the

  744. law promise

  745. us anything.

  746. And he

  747. goes to

  748. Isaiah

    Isaiah 54:1

  749. 54 verse

  750. 1.

  751. He's wanting

  752. to convince

  753. the Galatians

  754. who their

  755. mother is.

  756. And in

  757. verse 27

  758. quoting from

  759. Isaiah

  760. Paul quotes

  761. a verse

  762. that gives

  763. us this

  764. picture of

  765. Israel

  766. in exile.

  767. Israel is

  768. seen as the

  769. barren one

  770. who does

  771. not bear

  772. children.

  773. And the

  774. interesting thing

  775. right is that

  776. we know why

  777. Israel is in

  778. exile.

  779. Because Israel

  780. couldn't keep

  781. the law.

  782. God judged

  783. Israel for

  784. their fleshly

  785. efforts to

  786. keep the law

  787. which fell

  788. way short.

  789. They slipped

  790. into idolatry

  791. they disobeyed

  792. and they're in

  793. exile and yet

  794. look what God

  795. says he is

  796. going to do.

  797. Again he issues

  798. a promise

  799. and says

  800. I will give

  801. you more

  802. children

  803. than she

  804. who has

  805. a husband.

  806. And it's

  807. not going to

  808. be because

  809. you all of a

  810. sudden start

  811. measuring up

  812. to my

  813. standard.

  814. All along

  815. it's meant

  816. to show

  817. that God's

  818. promise

  819. is how

  820. he births

  821. children

  822. of Abraham

  823. and Jesus.

  824. God's going

  825. to intervene

  826. and restore

  827. Israel but

  828. not just

  829. Israel right?

  830. Because

  831. Paul's

  832. talking to

  833. the Galatians

  834. and saying

  835. look at

  836. verse 28

  837. you brothers

  838. like Isaac

  839. are children

  840. of promise.

  841. This was

  842. never just

  843. meant for

  844. Israel but

  845. for the

  846. nations right?

  847. Going all

  848. the way back

  849. to Abraham

  850. it's through

  851. your offspring

  852. all the

  853. nations of

  854. the world

  855. shall be

  856. blessed.

  857. And Paul

  858. looks

  859. he pens

  860. this

  861. joy

  862. brothers

  863. your

  864. children

  865. promise.

  866. This leads

  867. us to the

  868. third kind

  869. of contrast

  870. of what

  871. Paul's

  872. getting at

  873. in verses

  874. 28 to

  875. 31.

  876. It's a

  877. contrast of

  878. identities.

  879. He wants

  880. the Galatians

  881. to be

  882. crystal clear

  883. that they

  884. are children

  885. of promise

  886. and that

  887. as children

  888. of promise

  889. they are

  890. free.

  891. See he

  892. says that

  893. in 28

  894. and he

  895. compares

  896. them to

  897. Isaac.

  898. Isaac of

  899. course was

  900. the original

  901. offspring of

  902. promise.

  903. The one

  904. not produced

  905. by human

  906. effort but

  907. the one

  908. supernaturally

  909. produced by

  910. the power

  911. of God.

  912. Paul says

  913. so too

  914. are you

  915. Galatian

  916. Christians

  917. so too

  918. are you

  919. church

  920. you didn't

  921. measure up

  922. Christ

  923. measured up

  924. for you.

  925. It was

  926. God's

  927. promise

  928. that

  929. redeemed

  930. your life.

  931. And

  932. Abraham

  933. was

  934. promised

  935. this

  936. offspring

  937. would

  938. bless

  939. all the

  940. nations.

  941. Jesus

  942. has come

  943. and fulfilled

  944. that promise.

  945. As his

  946. name and

  947. his word

  948. go out

  949. more and

  950. more people

  951. from around

  952. this globe

  953. put their

  954. faith and

  955. trust in

  956. him.

  957. and become

  958. children of

  959. promise.

  960. Isaac was

  961. the original

  962. child of

  963. promise but

  964. he is

  965. followed by

  966. countless

  967. others like

  968. us.

  969. We're free

  970. from the

  971. law's curse

  972. and condemnation.

  973. We're born

  974. from above

  975. not by

  976. human effort.

  977. We're saved

  978. by God's

  979. gospel and

  980. not man-made

  981. righteousness.

  982. righteousness.

  983. Paul repeats

  984. this idea in

  985. verse 31

  986. with a little

  987. bit different

  988. language.

  989. Again

  990. contrasting the

  991. mothers.

  992. So brothers

  993. we are not

  994. children of

  995. the slave

  996. but of the

  997. free woman.

  998. Children of

  999. promise.

  1000. Children born

  1001. free.

  1002. Children born

  1003. from above

  1004. through promise

  1005. not through

  1006. effort.

  1007. And in

  1008. between these

  1009. kind of

  1010. bookend

  1011. here's who

  1012. you are

  1013. Paul sets a

  1014. further contrast

  1015. in verses

  1016. 29 and 30.

  1017. He returns

  1018. once more to

  1019. our story from

  1020. Genesis.

  1021. He says look

  1022. the slave son

  1023. Ishmael he

  1024. persecuted the

  1025. free son

  1026. Isaac.

  1027. So too

  1028. today.

  1029. Right?

  1030. I almost

  1031. hear Jesus'

  1032. words ringing

  1033. behind what

  1034. Paul is

  1035. saying.

  1036. Do not be

  1037. surprised if

  1038. the world

  1039. hates you

  1040. for it

  1041. hated me

  1042. first.

  1043. Paul himself

  1044. bears witness

  1045. in 511

  1046. which we'll

  1047. hear from

  1048. Billy next

  1049. week about.

  1050. Paul says

  1051. that it's

  1052. the offense

  1053. of the

  1054. cross.

  1055. It's the

  1056. reason why

  1057. he's taken

  1058. so much

  1059. flack.

  1060. He's telling

  1061. these folks

  1062. that you're

  1063. slaves and

  1064. you need

  1065. to wake

  1066. up and

  1067. you need

  1068. to repent

  1069. and you

  1070. need to

  1071. trust in

  1072. Christ or

  1073. you will

  1074. remain

  1075. slaves.

  1076. The slave

  1077. will always

  1078. resent and

  1079. resist the

  1080. free.

  1081. Paul is

  1082. saying don't

  1083. cave Galatians.

  1084. Don't let

  1085. this heat of

  1086. persecution

  1087. overwhelm you.

  1088. There's a

  1089. loud and

  1090. demanding voice

  1091. that's pulling

  1092. you into a

  1093. prison and

  1094. it's claiming

  1095. to be setting

  1096. you free.

  1097. Don't buy

  1098. it for a

  1099. moment.

  1100. Your

  1101. children of

  1102. promise.

  1103. You're

  1104. already

  1105. free.

  1106. Verse 30

  1107. Paul quotes

  1108. the words of

  1109. Sarah to

  1110. her husband

  1111. cast out

  1112. the slave

  1113. woman and

  1114. her son.

  1115. For the

  1116. son of the

  1117. slave woman

  1118. shall not

  1119. inherit with

  1120. the son of

  1121. the free

  1122. woman.

  1123. God agreed

  1124. with Sarah.

  1125. The slave

  1126. will not

  1127. inherit along

  1128. with the

  1129. children of

  1130. promise.

  1131. Along with

  1132. the free.

  1133. Here's

  1134. essentially the

  1135. two voices

  1136. speaking in

  1137. each side of

  1138. the Galatians

  1139. ears.

  1140. First the

  1141. Judaizers are

  1142. saying to the

  1143. Galatians,

  1144. we're the

  1145. heirs.

  1146. We have the

  1147. riches and

  1148. promises of

  1149. God.

  1150. The inheritance

  1151. is ours and

  1152. until you join

  1153. us under the

  1154. law, you

  1155. don't have any

  1156. share in that.

  1157. Paul flips it

  1158. on its head.

  1159. They are the

  1160. cast out

  1161. slaves with

  1162. empty pockets.

  1163. You are the

  1164. heirs according

  1165. to promise.

  1166. They can't

  1167. offer you

  1168. anything.

  1169. And you

  1170. stand to

  1171. lose everything

  1172. if you listen

  1173. to them.

  1174. You're already

  1175. free because

  1176. Jesus has set

  1177. you free.

  1178. free.

  1179. So stand

  1180. firm in

  1181. your freedom.

  1182. That's where

  1183. Paul has been

  1184. going this whole

  1185. time to 5

  1186. verse 1.

  1187. For freedom

  1188. Christ has set

  1189. you free.

  1190. Stand firm

  1191. therefore and

  1192. do not submit

  1193. again to a

  1194. yoke of

  1195. slavery.

  1196. Stand firm

  1197. in the

  1198. freedom Christ

  1199. alone provides

  1200. for you,

  1201. church.

  1202. God has

  1203. done what

  1204. religion could

  1205. never do.

  1206. What the law

  1207. has no hope

  1208. of accomplishing

  1209. and what human

  1210. effort just

  1211. simply cannot

  1212. accomplish.

  1213. A promise

  1214. made to

  1215. Abraham results

  1216. in a supernatural

  1217. birth.

  1218. A heavenly

  1219. Jerusalem is

  1220. continuing day

  1221. after day

  1222. after day to

  1223. birth many

  1224. children of

  1225. promise as

  1226. people put

  1227. their faith

  1228. and hope

  1229. and trust

  1230. in Jesus

  1231. alone.

  1232. So stand

  1233. firm in the

  1234. freedom you

  1235. have in

  1236. Jesus.

  1237. Don't turn

  1238. back to weak

  1239. and worthless

  1240. things thinking

  1241. that you're

  1242. somehow going

  1243. to justify

  1244. yourself or

  1245. somehow going

  1246. to sustain

  1247. your salvation

  1248. in your own

  1249. strength.

  1250. That's slavery

  1251. and it leads

  1252. only to death.

  1253. Christ sets

  1254. us free

  1255. so that we

  1256. can remain

  1257. free.

  1258. Children of

  1259. God and

  1260. heirs with

  1261. Christ.

  1262. Not because

  1263. we earned

  1264. it but

  1265. because we

  1266. believe God's

  1267. promise.

  1268. Sinners can

  1269. be made sons

  1270. and daughters

  1271. through faith

  1272. in Jesus

  1273. due to no

  1274. merit of our

  1275. own.

  1276. We're no

  1277. longer slaves.

  1278. This is why

  1279. Paul is so

  1280. perplexed with

  1281. the Galatians

  1282. and why he's

  1283. dropping this

  1284. harsh rebuke on

  1285. their heads

  1286. like a hammer.

  1287. Because

  1288. spiritually

  1289. speaking they

  1290. were acting

  1291. like slaves.

  1292. Imagine if

  1293. Isaac came

  1294. up to mom

  1295. and dad

  1296. and said

  1297. mommy

  1298. dearest

  1299. dad

  1300. would you

  1301. please cast

  1302. me out

  1303. with Hagar

  1304. and with

  1305. Ishmael?

  1306. I know

  1307. that I'm

  1308. this special

  1309. kid that

  1310. God's

  1311. promised to

  1312. use to be a

  1313. blessing to

  1314. all the

  1315. nations.

  1316. I know

  1317. that this

  1318. beautiful

  1319. inheritance

  1320. has been

  1321. secured for

  1322. me and

  1323. for my

  1324. family.

  1325. And yet

  1326. I really

  1327. like Hagar's

  1328. mac and

  1329. cheese.

  1330. Ishmael

  1331. just got

  1332. that new

  1333. call of

  1334. duty for

  1335. Xbox.

  1336. Are you

  1337. kidding me?

  1338. To abandon

  1339. the freedom

  1340. in Christ

  1341. to become

  1342. a slave

  1343. to something

  1344. that will

  1345. only lead

  1346. to your

  1347. demise?

  1348. No way!

  1349. Stand

  1350. firm in

  1351. the freedom

  1352. you have

  1353. in Christ

  1354. Paul says.

  1355. Don't

  1356. return to

  1357. slavery.

  1358. The law

  1359. cracks a

  1360. whip.

  1361. Christ

  1362. unlocks

  1363. our chains.

  1364. Stand

  1365. firm

  1366. in the

  1367. freedom you

  1368. have in

  1369. Christ.

  1370. So I want

  1371. us to

  1372. consider three

  1373. questions as

  1374. we close

  1375. this morning.

  1376. first question

  1377. are you

  1378. free?

  1379. Has your

  1380. inability to

  1381. measure up

  1382. led you to

  1383. the cross of

  1384. Jesus?

  1385. To trust in

  1386. his work on

  1387. your behalf to

  1388. save you and

  1389. set you free?

  1390. Or are you

  1391. still trying to

  1392. make yourself

  1393. presentable to

  1394. a holy and

  1395. righteous God?

  1396. you?

  1397. This passage

  1398. today calls

  1399. you don't

  1400. remain a

  1401. slave.

  1402. Christ can

  1403. set you

  1404. free.

  1405. That's why

  1406. he shed his

  1407. blood.

  1408. That's why

  1409. God raised him

  1410. from the dead

  1411. to offer a

  1412. salvation free

  1413. of charge.

  1414. You'll never

  1415. deserve it.

  1416. Just receive it

  1417. by faith.

  1418. Second

  1419. question.

  1420. Are you

  1421. standing firm

  1422. in your

  1423. freedom?

  1424. If you're a

  1425. Christian in the

  1426. room, are you

  1427. standing firm

  1428. in your

  1429. freedom?

  1430. Or are you

  1431. a child of

  1432. God who's

  1433. kind of

  1434. living like

  1435. a slave?

  1436. I want us

  1437. to think about

  1438. standing firm a

  1439. certain way this

  1440. morning.

  1441. Have you

  1442. ever kind of

  1443. seen a

  1444. football coach

  1445. who's got

  1446. kind of this

  1447. blocking pad,

  1448. right?

  1449. It's this kind

  1450. of big pad

  1451. that he holds

  1452. and he keeps

  1453. in front of

  1454. him so

  1455. linemen and

  1456. other people

  1457. will kind of

  1458. practice the

  1459. technique of

  1460. kind of running

  1461. into it.

  1462. You imagine

  1463. that football

  1464. coach needs

  1465. to stand a

  1466. certain way

  1467. to not get

  1468. bowled over

  1469. by the people

  1470. working on

  1471. their tackling

  1472. technique or

  1473. their blocking

  1474. technique.

  1475. technique.

  1476. He needs

  1477. to get in

  1478. a stance

  1479. that's going

  1480. to allow

  1481. him to

  1482. stand firm.

  1483. Sometimes I

  1484. think we can

  1485. kind of just

  1486. sort of just

  1487. coast through

  1488. this life as

  1489. Christians not

  1490. knowing that

  1491. there's voices

  1492. all around us

  1493. and within us

  1494. that are seeking

  1495. to knock us

  1496. off our feet

  1497. and ruin the

  1498. freedom we

  1499. have in

  1500. Christ.

  1501. So are you

  1502. standing firm

  1503. in your

  1504. freedom?

  1505. Here's kind

  1506. of a

  1507. diagnostic.

  1508. Do your own

  1509. thoughts tend

  1510. to puff you

  1511. up and give

  1512. off the

  1513. impression that

  1514. you have

  1515. earned or are

  1516. earning God's

  1517. approval?

  1518. people.

  1519. Like during

  1520. the weeks or

  1521. the longer

  1522. periods of

  1523. your life when

  1524. you're feeling

  1525. pretty good and

  1526. you haven't

  1527. really messed

  1528. up too badly

  1529. in a while and

  1530. you haven't

  1531. gotten really

  1532. angry, you

  1533. haven't done

  1534. anything really

  1535. blatantly offensive

  1536. to God, you

  1537. start thinking

  1538. that you're

  1539. earning something

  1540. in that moment.

  1541. Paul says that's

  1542. slave thinking.

  1543. You're not

  1544. earning anything.

  1545. Christ has

  1546. freed you from

  1547. that kind of

  1548. thinking, of

  1549. thinking that you

  1550. have to submit

  1551. to the law to

  1552. find your

  1553. salvation because

  1554. Christ has

  1555. set you free.

  1556. Repent of that

  1557. thinking, slave

  1558. thinking.

  1559. On the

  1560. underbelly of

  1561. that, are

  1562. you, maybe

  1563. you're hiding

  1564. sin in the

  1565. dark, thinking

  1566. that it's just

  1567. a matter of

  1568. time before God

  1569. kind of casts

  1570. you out.

  1571. You're not

  1572. feeling good

  1573. about your

  1574. self-events,

  1575. you're feeling

  1576. terrible about

  1577. them.

  1578. I don't measure

  1579. up.

  1580. I never

  1581. will.

  1582. I don't

  1583. know why God

  1584. would ever have

  1585. anything to do

  1586. with me.

  1587. And you're just

  1588. kind of sulking

  1589. in this despair

  1590. and this

  1591. Christian

  1592. depression.

  1593. You too are

  1594. living like a

  1595. slave.

  1596. To stand

  1597. firm in the

  1598. freedom that

  1599. Christ has

  1600. accomplished for

  1601. you is to

  1602. humbly admit

  1603. your sin,

  1604. your failure,

  1605. and your

  1606. weaknesses.

  1607. Bring it into

  1608. the light.

  1609. Because we

  1610. don't maintain

  1611. our freedom.

  1612. freedom.

  1613. And if we

  1614. don't maintain

  1615. it, it means

  1616. that we can't

  1617. mess up so

  1618. bad to lose

  1619. it as long

  1620. as we are

  1621. seeking to

  1622. remain in

  1623. it.

  1624. Don't hide

  1625. in the dark.

  1626. Don't live

  1627. defeated and

  1628. shackled.

  1629. Step into

  1630. your freedom

  1631. and stand

  1632. firm in it

  1633. by faith.

  1634. We know

  1635. too, right,

  1636. that there's

  1637. outside voices.

  1638. We have

  1639. enough sort

  1640. of internal

  1641. struggle that

  1642. wants to get

  1643. us to forget

  1644. all this,

  1645. but there's

  1646. voices outside

  1647. of us too.

  1648. Stronger and

  1649. powerful and

  1650. more convincing

  1651. probably than

  1652. ourselves at

  1653. points.

  1654. We know

  1655. Satan would

  1656. like nothing

  1657. better than

  1658. to enslave

  1659. us under

  1660. some false

  1661. gospel.

  1662. We know

  1663. the voice of

  1664. the world

  1665. too.

  1666. Those Jesus

  1667. people are

  1668. intolerant,

  1669. they're bigoted,

  1670. they're hate

  1671. filled.

  1672. Paul's

  1673. saying these

  1674. are slave

  1675. voices.

  1676. This is not

  1677. the voice of

  1678. freedom.

  1679. Only Christ

  1680. speaks freedom.

  1681. Stand firm.

  1682. Are you

  1683. standing firm

  1684. in your

  1685. freedom?

  1686. Third

  1687. question,

  1688. are you

  1689. helping others

  1690. stand firm

  1691. in their

  1692. freedom?

  1693. It's going

  1694. to look a

  1695. couple different

  1696. ways.

  1697. If we're

  1698. speaking

  1699. of non-believers

  1700. who are

  1701. outside of

  1702. the church,

  1703. who are

  1704. not currently

  1705. free in

  1706. Christ,

  1707. it means,

  1708. as we

  1709. kind of

  1710. mentioned

  1711. earlier,

  1712. it means

  1713. bringing them

  1714. face to

  1715. face with

  1716. the offense

  1717. of the

  1718. cross.

  1719. Letting

  1720. people realize

  1721. that they're

  1722. in slavery.

  1723. And until

  1724. they stop

  1725. trying to

  1726. measure up,

  1727. until they

  1728. stop trying

  1729. to ignore

  1730. God's laws

  1731. and repent

  1732. and put

  1733. their faith

  1734. in Christ,

  1735. they'll remain

  1736. a slave.

  1737. whether they're

  1738. a rule

  1739. keeper or

  1740. a rule

  1741. breaker,

  1742. we point

  1743. to them

  1744. that,

  1745. look,

  1746. you're

  1747. enslaved

  1748. to sin.

  1749. You can't

  1750. free yourself.

  1751. You need

  1752. Christ to

  1753. set you

  1754. free.

  1755. That's how

  1756. we can help

  1757. others move

  1758. into the

  1759. freedom that

  1760. Christ alone

  1761. offers.

  1762. But then

  1763. for one

  1764. another,

  1765. for the

  1766. brothers and

  1767. sisters of

  1768. the church,

  1769. we need to

  1770. be reminding

  1771. each other

  1772. of this

  1773. freedom.

  1774. We need to

  1775. be exhorting

  1776. and warning

  1777. each other

  1778. that we can

  1779. lose out on

  1780. this freedom

  1781. and we can

  1782. live in ways

  1783. that deny

  1784. this freedom.

  1785. And sometimes

  1786. even like

  1787. Paul to the

  1788. Galatian church,

  1789. we need to

  1790. rebuke one

  1791. another when

  1792. we see that

  1793. we're abandoning

  1794. this freedom.

  1795. How could we

  1796. do that?

  1797. Why would we

  1798. want to go

  1799. back to slavery?

  1800. It can't

  1801. save us.

  1802. Return to

  1803. the freedom

  1804. of the

  1805. gospel,

  1806. Jesus.

  1807. Church,

  1808. we must do

  1809. this.

  1810. We must be

  1811. helping one

  1812. another to

  1813. stand firm

  1814. in this

  1815. freedom that

  1816. Christ has

  1817. purchased for

  1818. us.

  1819. But isn't

  1820. it good

  1821. news?

  1822. Christ has

  1823. unlocked your

  1824. chains.

  1825. Stand firm

  1826. in your

  1827. freedom.

  1828. Let's pray.

  1829. Father, thank

  1830. you in the

  1831. fullness of

  1832. time, you

  1833. sent your

  1834. son Jesus

  1835. to redeem

  1836. us out from

  1837. under the

  1838. things of

  1839. our own

  1840. effort that

  1841. could not

  1842. save us.

  1843. God, thank

  1844. you Jesus

  1845. for the

  1846. freedom that

  1847. you have

  1848. secured for

  1849. us through

  1850. your own

  1851. life, death,

  1852. and resurrection.

  1853. Father, help

  1854. us to live in

  1855. this by your

  1856. spirit day by

  1857. day.

  1858. All for your

  1859. glory.

  1860. We rejoice

  1861. together in the

  1862. salvation that

  1863. you have

  1864. promised and

  1865. accomplished for

  1866. us in Christ.

  1867. we pray through

  1868. him.

  1869. Amen.

  1870. Amen.
