  1. I pull it up to the house with the keys in it.

  2. I go inside, I grab him, I pull him outside,

  3. and I show him the new car.

  4. I say, all right, pal, it's all yours.

  5. Take her for a spin.

  6. Enjoy your newfound freedom.

  7. But instead of hopping in and peeling off,

  8. let's just say he looks at me and he says,

  9. thanks, Dad, could you give me a ride

  10. to the movie theater in the van, please?

  11. If not, that's fine, I can walk.

  12. I give him a puzzled look and I say,

  13. but I don't think you understand.

  14. I bought you a car.

  15. It's yours.

  16. I got it so that you can use it and enjoy it

  17. and help others with it.

  18. You have a car now, so get into it and drive it.

  19. Why are you choosing not to experience the goodness

  20. of the freedom that I've given you?

  21. Now, you might be thinking,

  22. that is the most unrealistic story ever.

  23. No 16-year-old would receive such a gift

  24. and not enjoy it.

  25. And you would be right.

  26. But unthinkably,

  27. we as believers

  28. can often miss out

  29. on the goodness of a much greater gift

  30. of freedom

  31. that we have been graciously given.

  32. Like Samuel,

  33. in my rather ridiculous story,

  34. those of us who have trusted in Jesus

  35. have been given a marvelous gift

  36. of freedom.

  37. And just as Sammy chose to receive it,

  38. but not enjoy the full experience of it,

  39. we can do the same.

  40. Believers in Jesus

  41. can possess the gift of freedom in Christ,

  42. but not hop into it,

  43. not stand firm in it,

  44. not embrace it,

  45. and enjoy it,

  46. and use it to the full.

  47. And that is Paul's major concern

  48. in Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  49. And actually,

  50. it's one of his major concerns

  51. in the whole letter.

  52. He is simply flabbergasted

  53. that these dear people

  54. would retreat away

  55. from the most precious thing

  56. they have ever been given

  57. and choose not to fully embrace it

  58. and stand firm in it.

  59. So to boil the passage

  60. we're about to dig into together

  61. down to a sentence,

  62. this is what the Spirit of God

  63. is saying to us.

  64. If Jesus has set you free,

  65. stand firm in your freedom.

  66. If Jesus has set you free,

  67. stand firm in your freedom.

  68. Well, let's unpack that sentence

  69. in the three main parts of this passage.

  70. In verse 1,

  71. it's the main point.

  72. It's the command.

  73. Stand firm.

  74. So we're going to look at that briefly.

  75. The command.

  76. And then the next two sections,

  77. verses 2 to 6

  78. and verses 7 to 12,

  79. there are two ways

  80. that Paul is giving us

  81. to live that command out

  82. in real life.

  83. To flesh that command out.

  84. One of those ways

  85. in verses 2 to 6

  86. has to do with our hope.

  87. And the other way

  88. in verses 7 to 12

  89. has to do with truth.

  90. So the command,

  91. something that has to do with hope,

  92. and then truth.

  93. So let's start in verse 1

  94. by looking at this command

  95. to stand firm in our freedom.

  96. For freedom,

  97. Christ has set us free.

  98. Stand firm, therefore,

  99. and do not submit again

  100. to a yoke of slavery.

  101. So Paul gives a command here.

  102. Actually, it's two commands.

  103. They're really just two sides

  104. of the same coin.

  105. Stand firm,

  106. do not submit again

  107. to a yoke of slavery.

  108. But before we kind of

  109. dig into that command,

  110. we need to back up

  111. and hear the statement

  112. that provides the basis

  113. for the command

  114. at the very beginning

  115. of the verse.

  116. For freedom,

  117. Christ has set you free.

  118. Now as 21st century Americans,

  119. we hear the word freedom,

  120. and we either think

  121. of William Wallace

  122. riding back and forth

  123. on his horse

  124. telling the Scottish freedom,

  125. or we think of

  126. fluttering American flag.

  127. We think of human rights,

  128. of democratic liberty

  129. for individuals.

  130. That's what we think of

  131. when we think of freedom.

  132. That's not what Paul's

  133. talking about here.

  134. How do we know that?

  135. Well, this statement

  136. is not just coming out

  137. of nowhere.

  138. Paul has been mounting

  139. a theological juggernaut

  140. of an argument

  141. in chapters 3 and 4

  142. that he's been building

  143. momentum towards this point

  144. for two chapters

  145. that talk about slavery

  146. and freedom

  147. in a very specific way.

  148. It doesn't have to do

  149. with democratic human rights.

  150. As important as those are.

  151. Remember,

  152. the whole issue

  153. for the Galatian Christians

  154. was that some influential

  155. Jewish people

  156. have been making their rounds

  157. in the region of Galatia

  158. and the churches there,

  159. and they have been

  160. patting the backs

  161. of the newly minted

  162. non-Jewish Christians

  163. and saying,

  164. oh, I am so happy

  165. that you are believing

  166. in the God of Israel

  167. and his Messiah, Jesus.

  168. This is wonderful.

  169. Now, you're almost there.

  170. You have nearly become

  171. a part of God's covenant people,

  172. but you're missing something

  173. to really be in

  174. in order to really join the club

  175. and really be okay with God.

  176. You need to observe

  177. the law of Moses

  178. to its full extent.

  179. You need to celebrate

  180. the Jewish Holy Days

  181. and eat kosher food,

  182. and if you really want to belong,

  183. guys, I'm sorry,

  184. but you've got to get circumcised.

  185. Then you'll have

  186. complete confidence

  187. that you are righteous before God

  188. and that he approves of you.

  189. That's how you're fully in.

  190. Well, all of this

  191. actually sounded

  192. kind of appealing

  193. to the Galatian Christians

  194. in one sense.

  195. They were leaning towards it

  196. because those are practical,

  197. visible things

  198. that you can check off a list

  199. and say,

  200. okay, I'm good.

  201. I know I'm okay

  202. because of what I've done

  203. to make sure I'm good with God.

  204. But the problem with this

  205. is that it turns back the clock

  206. on what Jesus has done.

  207. The whole reason Jesus came

  208. was that human beings

  209. have never been able

  210. to keep God's holy law

  211. that he gave to Moses.

  212. Israel never once came close

  213. to achieving the standard

  214. of holiness that God requires.

  215. Look back at chapter 3,

  216. verse 21.

  217. Chapter 3, verse 21.

  218. Is the law then contrary

  219. to the promises of God?

  220. Certainly not.

  221. For if a law had been given

  222. that could give life,

  223. then righteousness would indeed

  224. be by the law.

  225. So Paul's saying here,

  226. the law's not bad.

  227. It's not an evil thing.

  228. It simply has no power

  229. to make you righteous.

  230. It can't give you life.

  231. It can't give you

  232. a right standing with God.

  233. In fact,

  234. all those who relied on the law,

  235. according to chapter 3,

  236. verse 10,

  237. for all those who rely

  238. on works of the law

  239. are under a curse.

  240. For it is written,

  241. cursed be everyone

  242. who does not abide

  243. by all things written

  244. in the book of the law

  245. and do them.

  246. No one can actually

  247. keep the law

  248. and so all those

  249. who rely on the law

  250. were cursed,

  251. were doomed

  252. to be unrighteous

  253. in the law's sight.

  254. But when Jesus came,

  255. as chapter 4,

  256. verse 4 puts it,

  257. he was born of a woman

  258. and he was born

  259. under the law,

  260. under which he actually

  261. kept it.

  262. He's the only one who did.

  263. And then he willingly

  264. became a curse-removing

  265. substitute

  266. for those of us

  267. who broke the law.

  268. And by doing that,

  269. he released all of us

  270. who were under

  271. the curse of the law,

  272. who were enslaved

  273. under the law,

  274. and set us free

  275. from its shame

  276. and its condemnation

  277. and the futile attempts,

  278. the hamster wheel

  279. we have effect

  280. of trying to be right

  281. with God on our own.

  282. And in the passage

  283. immediately before ours,

  284. as Pastor Mack

  285. preached last week,

  286. the Galatians,

  287. by trying to go back

  288. to the law

  289. as a way to be right

  290. before God,

  291. were denying

  292. their true identity

  293. as free sons

  294. and daughters of God.

  295. And they were going

  296. back to slavery.

  297. So what's the freedom

  298. that Paul's talking about?

  299. What's the freedom

  300. for which Christ

  301. has set us free?

  302. It's freedom

  303. from depending

  304. on our own moral efforts

  305. to get right

  306. and stay right

  307. with God.

  308. We're free from that.

  309. Free from any need

  310. to get right

  311. and stay right

  312. with God

  313. on our own,

  314. through our own effort.

  315. And notice what Paul says.

  316. It's for this freedom

  317. that you got set free.

  318. I mean,

  319. it's kind of a

  320. redundant statement.

  321. He doesn't,

  322. it's kind of a duh.

  323. You didn't get set free

  324. to go back to slavery.

  325. You get set free

  326. to be free.

  327. You are to remain free,

  328. to stay free,

  329. to fully experience

  330. the goodness

  331. of that freedom

  332. that Jesus purchased

  333. for us.

  334. It would be unthinkable

  335. to go back.

  336. So that's what the therefore

  337. in verse 1

  338. is there for.

  339. Because Jesus set you

  340. free by grace

  341. so you can actually

  342. remain free

  343. and not return

  344. to your own efforts

  345. as a way to get right

  346. with God,

  347. stand firm.

  348. Stay in it.

  349. Don't go back

  350. to a yoke of slavery

  351. when Jesus has removed it.

  352. So we are free

  353. from depending

  354. on our own efforts

  355. to be right with God

  356. and we must stand firm

  357. in that freedom

  358. and not go back

  359. to slavery.

  360. That's the command.

  361. That's just pretty plain

  362. and simple

  363. and kind of obvious.

  364. But perhaps you're thinking,

  365. okay,

  366. I think I got that.

  367. That makes sense.

  368. What does that look like?

  369. How do I do that?

  370. How do I stand firm

  371. in my freedom

  372. that Christ has purchased

  373. for me?

  374. For the rest of the passage,

  375. Paul gives us two ways

  376. to stand firm

  377. in our freedom.

  378. First way has to do

  379. with hope.

  380. Second way has to do

  381. with truth.

  382. The first way

  383. is in verses 2 to 6.

  384. It's this.

  385. Don't hope

  386. in your visible

  387. human effort.

  388. Hope

  389. in Christ's

  390. unseen righteousness.

  391. Don't hope

  392. in your visible

  393. human effort.

  394. But rather,

  395. hope in Christ's

  396. unseen righteousness.

  397. Right in verse 2,

  398. the big issue

  399. comes out.

  400. for the first time

  401. since chapter 2

  402. of Galatians,

  403. circumcision

  404. gets mentioned.

  405. And apparently,

  406. a whole bunch

  407. of the hullabaloo

  408. going on in Galatia

  409. had to do

  410. with this very

  411. specific,

  412. concrete

  413. ritual

  414. of getting

  415. circumcised.

  416. circumcised.

  417. The non-Jewish

  418. believers

  419. are not

  420. circumcised.

  421. The Jewish

  422. people influencing

  423. them to get

  424. circumcised

  425. were saying,

  426. in order to

  427. really be in,

  428. you've got to

  429. get circumcised.

  430. You've got to

  431. go under the

  432. knife.

  433. At least all

  434. the men

  435. needed to.

  436. But look at

  437. Paul's sharp

  438. warning in verse 2.

  439. If you get

  440. circumcised,

  441. then Christ

  442. is of no

  443. advantage to you

  444. at all.

  445. The false

  446. teachers are saying

  447. they could somehow

  448. mix the grace

  449. of Christ

  450. with human

  451. effort to

  452. produce a recipe

  453. of getting

  454. right with God.

  455. And Paul says,

  456. nope.

  457. God does not

  458. share his glory

  459. with human effort.

  460. It's either

  461. all of grace

  462. or not at all.

  463. It's all of works.

  464. And this is why.

  465. Look at verse 3.

  466. He gives us the reason.

  467. If they get

  468. circumcised as a way

  469. of getting right

  470. with God,

  471. what does he say?

  472. You're obligated

  473. to keep the whole

  474. law.

  475. It means you

  476. have to submit

  477. yourself through

  478. the entire system

  479. of the law

  480. of Moses,

  481. which requires

  482. that they

  483. perfectly obey

  484. the whole law

  485. in order to be

  486. righteous before God

  487. and no one

  488. has ever done

  489. that except

  490. Jesus,

  491. which is the point.

  492. It's got to be

  493. by faith in him.

  494. And he puts it

  495. really starkly

  496. in verse 4.

  497. If you're trying

  498. to get right

  499. with God

  500. through your

  501. obedience to the law,

  502. then you're

  503. severed from Christ.

  504. You're fallen

  505. away from grace.

  506. You've fallen

  507. off the grace train.

  508. The only one

  509. who can save you

  510. then is you.

  511. And then you're

  512. up a creek

  513. because you can't.

  514. You know,

  515. sometimes Paul

  516. is a little bit

  517. hard to understand.

  518. Not here.

  519. It's super clear.

  520. He's repeating

  521. himself over and

  522. over and over again.

  523. It's like,

  524. grace or not grace.

  525. I don't think

  526. you guys get it.

  527. It's this or this.

  528. You either go back

  529. to a slavish dependence

  530. on your own ability

  531. and your own effort

  532. to get right with God

  533. and you hope in that.

  534. But if that's true,

  535. then you have nothing

  536. to do with Christ.

  537. One writer

  538. puts it this way.

  539. If the Galatians

  540. get circumcised,

  541. they are crossing

  542. a border

  543. into occupied territory

  544. where the law

  545. rules

  546. and not Christ.

  547. The Galatians

  548. were in grave danger

  549. of seceding

  550. from the kingdom

  551. of grace

  552. and therefore

  553. removing themselves

  554. from the blessings

  555. of the king

  556. of grace.

  557. So basically,

  558. Paul's saying,

  559. don't hope

  560. in your human effort

  561. to get right with God.

  562. If you bank

  563. on your moral performance,

  564. you're sunk

  565. because it cuts you off

  566. from the only true hope

  567. you have,

  568. which is Christ.

  569. And that's now

  570. where he turns

  571. in verse 5.

  572. He shifts gears

  573. and he starts looking

  574. at our true hope.

  575. Paul throws

  576. the drifting Galatians

  577. a rescue line

  578. of appeal

  579. in verse 5.

  580. For through the Spirit

  581. by faith

  582. we ourselves

  583. eagerly wait

  584. for the hope

  585. of righteousness.

  586. Notice how he

  587. goes from talking

  588. directly to the Galatians

  589. with you,

  590. the you pronoun,

  591. and then he shifts

  592. by using we.

  593. He's inviting them

  594. to rejoin

  595. the we

  596. of all those

  597. who have trusted

  598. in Christ alone

  599. for true righteousness.

  600. Don't you love

  601. what Paul's

  602. implying here?

  603. He's saying

  604. that our hope

  605. is not in a checklist

  606. of visible

  607. human effort,

  608. but in an unseen

  609. reality

  610. that we participate in

  611. and wait for

  612. by faith

  613. through the Spirit.

  614. Let's unpack that

  615. for a moment.

  616. when you realize

  617. that you could

  618. only be right

  619. with God

  620. through Jesus'

  621. work on your behalf

  622. and you trusted

  623. in Jesus,

  624. then God

  625. effectively

  626. and eternally

  627. pronounced you

  628. to be righteous

  629. in his sight.

  630. it was a

  631. verdict

  632. that was

  633. pronounced

  634. in eternity

  635. and it was unseen

  636. in one sense

  637. in this world.

  638. But one day

  639. it is our

  640. certain hope

  641. that our

  642. very real

  643. righteousness

  644. which we

  645. is still unseen

  646. and we

  647. partially experience

  648. now in terms of

  649. seeing that

  650. worked out

  651. in our lives,

  652. one day

  653. it will be

  654. on full display.

  655. it's totally

  656. ours.

  657. We have it.

  658. We are declared

  659. righteous,

  660. done

  661. from now

  662. and forever.

  663. And that starts

  664. gradually getting

  665. worked out

  666. in our lives

  667. from the present

  668. all the way

  669. into the future.

  670. Let me illustrate

  671. it this way.

  672. People have often

  673. said I look

  674. like my dad.

  675. Now my likeness

  676. to my dad

  677. in one sense

  678. it's always been there

  679. ever since I was a baby.

  680. You would probably

  681. be able to spot

  682. some similarities

  683. perhaps to my dad

  684. and my baby pictures

  685. and elementary

  686. school photos

  687. but I was a baby.

  688. I was a little kid.

  689. I wasn't a spitting

  690. image of him

  691. as he is now.

  692. But as I've grown

  693. and matured

  694. that likeness

  695. has increased

  696. in more ways

  697. than one.

  698. I've taken on

  699. his physical

  700. characteristics.

  701. I'm taller.

  702. I'm losing my hair.

  703. I even cough

  704. like my dad.

  705. We have the same

  706. cough.

  707. It's weird.

  708. But also

  709. in our character.

  710. I've begun

  711. to become

  712. more and more

  713. like him.

  714. I'm more patient

  715. than I used to be.

  716. I hope.

  717. I'm wiser

  718. than I used to be

  719. I think.

  720. And in that sense

  721. that likeness

  722. was slow

  723. to emerge

  724. and I'm certain

  725. though

  726. that when I'm 60

  727. I will look

  728. even more like

  729. my dad

  730. than I do now.

  731. It's in my DNA

  732. to become

  733. more and more

  734. like my dad.

  735. That's

  736. the hope

  737. of our righteousness.

  738. It's in our

  739. spirit encoded

  740. DNA

  741. that we are

  742. are becoming

  743. and forever

  744. will be

  745. righteous

  746. as Jesus

  747. is righteous.

  748. That's our hope.

  749. And it's not a

  750. I hope

  751. it's a maybe hope

  752. it's a certain hope.

  753. it's happening

  754. now

  755. and it will

  756. happen

  757. in the future.

  758. So we wait

  759. for it

  760. patiently

  761. eagerly

  762. expectantly

  763. actively

  764. and Paul

  765. clenches it

  766. in verse 6

  767. for in Christ

  768. Jesus

  769. neither

  770. circumcision

  771. nor uncircumcision

  772. counts for

  773. anything

  774. but only

  775. faith

  776. working through

  777. love.

  778. So

  779. he's saying

  780. here

  781. whether you're

  782. a circumcised

  783. Jewish person

  784. or an

  785. uncircumcised

  786. non-Jewish

  787. person

  788. that's

  789. pointing to

  790. whether you

  791. make this

  792. religious

  793. checklist

  794. or not

  795. the only

  796. thing that

  797. actually brings

  798. about righteousness

  799. is not the

  800. visible human

  801. effort

  802. but faith

  803. and genuine

  804. faith in

  805. Jesus

  806. faith that

  807. justifies

  808. also brings

  809. about the

  810. evidence

  811. of righteousness

  812. which is

  813. love.

  814. As someone

  815. else has

  816. said

  817. we are

  818. justified

  819. by faith

  820. alone

  821. but not

  822. by faith

  823. that remains

  824. alone.

  825. As we

  826. continue to

  827. trust in

  828. and rest in

  829. and value

  830. and get to

  831. know Jesus

  832. by faith

  833. then the

  834. family resemblance

  835. of truly

  836. belonging to

  837. Christ starts

  838. to emerge

  839. in the form

  840. of love.

  841. I'm not

  842. going to

  843. steal much

  844. from Pastor

  845. Mike's

  846. sermon next

  847. week in

  848. verses 13

  849. to 15

  850. but it's

  851. helpful

  852. that Paul

  853. right here

  854. doesn't want

  855. the Galatians

  856. to think that

  857. human effort

  858. doesn't have

  859. a place.

  860. Oh it has

  861. a place.

  862. We don't

  863. just say

  864. I believe

  865. and then we

  866. sit back

  867. and do

  868. nothing.

  869. No we

  870. say I

  871. trust in

  872. Christ alone

  873. for being

  874. made right

  875. with God

  876. now and

  877. forever.

  878. It's nothing

  879. I do

  880. at all.

  881. that makes

  882. me right

  883. with God.

  884. It is only

  885. what Christ

  886. has done

  887. and therefore

  888. because of

  889. what Jesus

  890. has done

  891. I'm going

  892. to expend

  893. all my

  894. energy

  895. in gratitude

  896. fueled

  897. obedience

  898. to the

  899. God of

  900. grace

  901. by loving

  902. the people

  903. around me

  904. for Jesus

  905. sake.

  906. So if

  907. love is

  908. the fruit

  909. then faith

  910. in God's

  911. grace

  912. is the

  913. root.

  914. Our hope

  915. is not

  916. in the fruit

  917. not

  918. in what

  919. we do.

  920. That's not

  921. our hope

  922. for getting

  923. right with

  924. God.

  925. But in

  926. the reality

  927. of righteousness

  928. that God

  929. has granted

  930. us by faith

  931. and through

  932. the operation

  933. of the Spirit

  934. in us

  935. to bring out

  936. that righteousness

  937. DNA.

  938. Isn't the

  939. irony of

  940. this verse

  941. beautiful?

  942. Our

  943. unseen

  944. righteousness

  945. shows up

  946. visibly as

  947. love.

  948. love.

  949. And it's

  950. only possible

  951. through the

  952. non-effort

  953. of faith

  954. in the

  955. effort

  956. of another.

  957. As the

  958. hymn says,

  959. my hope

  960. is built

  961. on nothing

  962. less than

  963. Jesus'

  964. blood and

  965. righteousness.

  966. I don't

  967. trust the

  968. sweetest

  969. frame,

  970. but wholly

  971. lean on

  972. Jesus'

  973. name.

  974. Our

  975. true hope

  976. of being

  977. one with

  978. Jesus by

  979. faith,

  980. justified

  981. both now

  982. and forever

  983. is too

  984. precious a

  985. thing to

  986. lose.

  987. And Paul

  988. is warning

  989. us here

  990. that if

  991. we embrace

  992. our own

  993. human effort

  994. as our

  995. hope,

  996. then we

  997. lose our

  998. only certain

  999. hope of

  1000. experiencing

  1001. true

  1002. righteousness.

  1003. Well,

  1004. we're not

  1005. Galatians,

  1006. we're

  1007. Kenosians,

  1008. so how

  1009. does this

  1010. fit with

  1011. us?

  1012. How do

  1013. we respond

  1014. to this?

  1015. Do we

  1016. just say,

  1017. oh,

  1018. glad circumcision

  1019. isn't a

  1020. thing anymore?

  1021. No.

  1022. We must

  1023. not distance

  1024. ourselves too

  1025. quickly from

  1026. this text just

  1027. because of the

  1028. circumcision language.

  1029. There's a very

  1030. important principle

  1031. here that we've

  1032. been working on.

  1033. It's not human

  1034. effort,

  1035. it's Christ's

  1036. grace.

  1037. And it needs

  1038. to strike us

  1039. as bluntly as

  1040. it struck the

  1041. Galatians,

  1042. because we too

  1043. are very prone

  1044. to rely on our

  1045. moral performance

  1046. and our human

  1047. effort just as

  1048. much as they

  1049. were.

  1050. How do we

  1051. do that and

  1052. why do we

  1053. do that?

  1054. Well,

  1055. it's because

  1056. moral performance

  1057. is our

  1058. default.

  1059. We know

  1060. we're not

  1061. okay.

  1062. Everyone

  1063. alive has

  1064. this sense

  1065. of,

  1066. eh,

  1067. I'm not

  1068. alright.

  1069. We do

  1070. things that

  1071. are wrong,

  1072. we feel

  1073. the shame,

  1074. and then

  1075. what do we

  1076. do with

  1077. that?

  1078. We have

  1079. this sense

  1080. of,

  1081. I'm not

  1082. complete,

  1083. I'm not

  1084. okay,

  1085. there's

  1086. something

  1087. missing.

  1088. Why am

  1089. I not

  1090. okay?

  1091. It's down

  1092. on the

  1093. inside of

  1094. us and

  1095. we can't

  1096. escape it.

  1097. So what

  1098. did our

  1099. ancestors do?

  1100. Well,

  1101. Adam and

  1102. Eve in

  1103. the garden,

  1104. they messed

  1105. up,

  1106. their shame

  1107. told them

  1108. that something

  1109. was wrong,

  1110. something was

  1111. off,

  1112. they weren't

  1113. okay,

  1114. told them

  1115. that they

  1116. were naked,

  1117. so what

  1118. did they

  1119. do?

  1120. They stitched

  1121. some fig leaves

  1122. together,

  1123. they covered

  1124. themselves up,

  1125. it was a

  1126. self-salvation

  1127. project based

  1128. on human effort

  1129. and it

  1130. failed miserably.

  1131. In our

  1132. American culture

  1133. in 21st

  1134. century,

  1135. we are

  1136. exactly the

  1137. same.

  1138. We are

  1139. all about

  1140. helping

  1141. ourselves,

  1142. becoming the

  1143. best version

  1144. of ourselves,

  1145. giving ourselves

  1146. self-care and

  1147. self-love to

  1148. try to address

  1149. the deep down

  1150. sense that

  1151. we're not

  1152. okay.

  1153. That's why

  1154. Oprah is

  1155. rich,

  1156. it's the

  1157. gospel she

  1158. preaches.

  1159. But the

  1160. fact is,

  1161. we aren't

  1162. okay.

  1163. And no

  1164. amount of

  1165. telling ourselves

  1166. that we

  1167. are okay

  1168. and we

  1169. got this

  1170. can make

  1171. us okay.

  1172. If we put

  1173. our hope

  1174. in ourselves,

  1175. we lose

  1176. our only

  1177. true hope,

  1178. which is

  1179. our true

  1180. righteousness

  1181. that we

  1182. have by

  1183. faith in

  1184. Jesus Christ

  1185. who loved

  1186. us and

  1187. gave himself

  1188. up so we

  1189. can be

  1190. okay.

  1191. So dear

  1192. friend,

  1193. what are

  1194. you hoping

  1195. in?

  1196. Where is

  1197. your hope

  1198. that you're

  1199. going to be

  1200. okay somehow?

  1201. are you

  1202. assured of

  1203. and hanging

  1204. on to

  1205. the certain

  1206. hope of

  1207. righteousness

  1208. that Jesus

  1209. accomplished

  1210. for you?

  1211. Or are

  1212. you hoping

  1213. in a

  1214. hamster

  1215. wheel of

  1216. a maybe

  1217. hope?

  1218. Maybe if

  1219. I run

  1220. hard enough,

  1221. maybe if

  1222. I do

  1223. well enough

  1224. today,

  1225. I don't

  1226. know about

  1227. you,

  1228. but I

  1229. wake up

  1230. as this

  1231. is my

  1232. default.

  1233. default.

  1234. I wake

  1235. up with

  1236. this sense

  1237. of,

  1238. okay,

  1239. I've got to

  1240. make sure

  1241. I get

  1242. things in

  1243. order.

  1244. However that

  1245. manifests itself,

  1246. whether it's

  1247. in having a

  1248. long enough

  1249. devotion,

  1250. or I'm

  1251. praying enough,

  1252. or whether I

  1253. do a great

  1254. job as a

  1255. dad that

  1256. morning,

  1257. or if I'm

  1258. loving toward

  1259. my wife that

  1260. morning,

  1261. but I get

  1262. this sense

  1263. default in

  1264. me,

  1265. I might be the

  1266. only one in the

  1267. room,

  1268. I don't know,

  1269. but I get this

  1270. sense of like,

  1271. I've got to make

  1272. sure I'm okay.

  1273. But what I

  1274. have to do

  1275. every morning

  1276. is I have to

  1277. say,

  1278. I'm okay,

  1279. now and

  1280. forever,

  1281. because of

  1282. Jesus.

  1283. That's where I

  1284. rest.

  1285. It's a deep

  1286. level sense

  1287. of trust.

  1288. It's extremely

  1289. hard to live

  1290. there.

  1291. Depending on

  1292. who you are,

  1293. I don't know,

  1294. that's how it is

  1295. for me.

  1296. You might be

  1297. trying to be

  1298. okay or stay

  1299. okay on the

  1300. basis of whether

  1301. you're succeeding

  1302. in your job,

  1303. or whether

  1304. people approve

  1305. of you,

  1306. whether you're

  1307. being the best

  1308. version of

  1309. yourself today,

  1310. or whether

  1311. you're a good

  1312. parent,

  1313. or whatever

  1314. it may be,

  1315. we all want

  1316. to be okay,

  1317. but the fact

  1318. is we're not.

  1319. And Jesus

  1320. has secured

  1321. our only hope

  1322. of making us

  1323. okay through

  1324. his death and

  1325. resurrection.

  1326. So rest.

  1327. Rest in this

  1328. certain hope

  1329. with the Spirit's

  1330. help and get

  1331. off the hamster

  1332. wheel of

  1333. human effort.

  1334. But maybe

  1335. for some of you

  1336. you've been

  1337. listening and

  1338. you're like,

  1339. that isn't me

  1340. at all.

  1341. I'm not feeling

  1342. that.

  1343. Well,

  1344. maybe the other

  1345. side of the

  1346. coin that Paul

  1347. points out in

  1348. verse 6 needs

  1349. to hit you.

  1350. Perhaps your

  1351. faith is too

  1352. casual.

  1353. Perhaps your

  1354. faith is flippant

  1355. and it's not

  1356. showing up as

  1357. love.

  1358. You're not

  1359. taking sin

  1360. seriously.

  1361. You are

  1362. centered on

  1363. self and

  1364. you're okay

  1365. with that.

  1366. This is not

  1367. standing firm

  1368. in freedom.

  1369. Being free

  1370. in Christ

  1371. doesn't mean

  1372. you're free

  1373. to do

  1374. whatever you

  1375. want.

  1376. It means

  1377. you're free

  1378. to not

  1379. sin.

  1380. We need to

  1381. stay away

  1382. from the

  1383. slavery to

  1384. sin just as

  1385. much as

  1386. the slavery

  1387. depending on

  1388. our human

  1389. effort.

  1390. So if you're

  1391. not taking

  1392. sin seriously,

  1393. then it's

  1394. worth examining

  1395. your faith.

  1396. Is it a

  1397. true and

  1398. repentant faith

  1399. that gets

  1400. worked out

  1401. into love?

  1402. Not perfectly.

  1403. Don't be under

  1404. a sense of

  1405. condemnation here

  1406. if you have

  1407. true faith,

  1408. but it is

  1409. worth asking,

  1410. is my faith

  1411. sincere?

  1412. Is it getting

  1413. worked out in

  1414. love toward

  1415. God and

  1416. toward others

  1417. in my life?

  1418. Is it

  1419. producing the

  1420. fruit of the

  1421. righteousness that

  1422. God requires?

  1423. Only genuine

  1424. faith latches on

  1425. to our true

  1426. hope of being

  1427. right with God.

  1428. Flippant faith

  1429. will ultimately

  1430. not produce the

  1431. fruit of

  1432. righteousness.

  1433. So if that's

  1434. you, then hear

  1435. and obey Paul's

  1436. words to

  1437. Timothy and

  1438. 2 Timothy 2.

  1439. Flee youthful

  1440. passions.

  1441. Pursue

  1442. righteousness,

  1443. faith, love,

  1444. and peace along

  1445. with all those

  1446. who call on the

  1447. Lord from a pure

  1448. heart.

  1449. So that's the

  1450. first way that we

  1451. can live out what

  1452. it means to stand

  1453. firm in our

  1454. freedom.

  1455. We have to latch

  1456. on to the only

  1457. hope of Christ's

  1458. unseen righteousness

  1459. both now and

  1460. forever.

  1461. So what's the

  1462. second way?

  1463. The second way

  1464. that we can stand

  1465. firm in our

  1466. freedom in Christ

  1467. that Paul points

  1468. us to is this,

  1469. has to do with

  1470. truth.

  1471. Zealously hold to

  1472. the exclusive truth

  1473. of the cross.

  1474. Zealously hold to

  1475. the exclusive truth

  1476. of the cross.

  1477. look at verse 7.

  1478. You were running

  1479. well.

  1480. Who hindered you

  1481. from obeying the

  1482. truth?

  1483. Something had

  1484. happened to the

  1485. Galatians.

  1486. They were on a

  1487. good course.

  1488. They were running

  1489. the race well,

  1490. but someone got in

  1491. their way.

  1492. And instead of

  1493. pushing them over

  1494. and keep running

  1495. the right way,

  1496. they diverged.

  1497. Paul wants to

  1498. know who is

  1499. responsible for

  1500. hindering them

  1501. from following

  1502. the truth of

  1503. the good news

  1504. of the gospel

  1505. of the cross.

  1506. And it's not

  1507. because he's

  1508. curious.

  1509. It's because he's

  1510. ticked.

  1511. In fact, this

  1512. whole section on

  1513. the surface,

  1514. Paul's kind of

  1515. off his usual

  1516. style.

  1517. It appears a

  1518. little bit like

  1519. disjointed at

  1520. first.

  1521. It's not his

  1522. kind of usual

  1523. steady logical

  1524. self.

  1525. As one writer

  1526. puts it, it's

  1527. like Paul is

  1528. uttering snorts

  1529. of indignation.

  1530. His temperature

  1531. is running

  1532. hot, but it's

  1533. not the

  1534. Galatians.

  1535. It's at those

  1536. who steered

  1537. them away from

  1538. the truth of

  1539. the cross.

  1540. Paul wants

  1541. them to know

  1542. in verse 8

  1543. that this line

  1544. of thinking,

  1545. this persuasion

  1546. that they need

  1547. to get circumcised

  1548. to get right

  1549. with God,

  1550. it's not from

  1551. God.

  1552. It's not from

  1553. him who calls

  1554. you.

  1555. God called

  1556. them to be

  1557. free from

  1558. the curse of

  1559. the law,

  1560. free from

  1561. futile,

  1562. hamster wheel,

  1563. human effort.

  1564. God called

  1565. them to

  1566. experience and

  1567. to enjoy and

  1568. stand firm in

  1569. the freedom of

  1570. a right

  1571. relationship with

  1572. God through

  1573. faith in

  1574. Christ.

  1575. He did not

  1576. call them to

  1577. go back into

  1578. slavery again.

  1579. He called

  1580. them to hop

  1581. into the car

  1582. and take

  1583. off.

  1584. And in

  1585. verse 9, we

  1586. see that this

  1587. thinking has the

  1588. potential to

  1589. spread and

  1590. corrupt the

  1591. whole region of

  1592. Galatia and

  1593. affect all the

  1594. churches there.

  1595. And the

  1596. Galatians need

  1597. to be aware of

  1598. this.

  1599. A little

  1600. leaven leavens

  1601. the whole

  1602. lump.

  1603. Almost in

  1604. the same

  1605. breath in

  1606. verse 10, he

  1607. appears to

  1608. calm down and

  1609. communicate a

  1610. real confidence

  1611. in the Galatians.

  1612. You can tell

  1613. of his affection

  1614. for them.

  1615. He is not so

  1616. concerned about

  1617. them that they

  1618. are going to

  1619. abandon their

  1620. freedom in the

  1621. end.

  1622. He is persuaded

  1623. in the Lord,

  1624. helpful phrase,

  1625. in the Lord,

  1626. that their

  1627. thinking will

  1628. line back up

  1629. with the truth.

  1630. That phrase in

  1631. the Lord is

  1632. very helpful.

  1633. Paul isn't

  1634. necessarily

  1635. confident in

  1636. the Galatians

  1637. themselves, but

  1638. in God's

  1639. ability to

  1640. protect his

  1641. people from

  1642. error and

  1643. to persuade

  1644. his people of

  1645. the truth from

  1646. the heart.

  1647. But the

  1648. opposite is

  1649. true for

  1650. those who

  1651. are persuading

  1652. his people to

  1653. abandon their

  1654. freedom.

  1655. Look at the

  1656. last half of

  1657. verse 10.

  1658. And the

  1659. one who is

  1660. troubling you

  1661. will bear the

  1662. penalty, whoever

  1663. he is.

  1664. This is a

  1665. reference to

  1666. God's judgment

  1667. judgment.

  1668. In the end,

  1669. those who

  1670. persist in

  1671. persuading God's

  1672. people away

  1673. from the truth

  1674. of the cross

  1675. will be the

  1676. recipients of

  1677. God's hot

  1678. judgment.

  1679. This is a

  1680. big deal in

  1681. Paul's mind.

  1682. And we get to

  1683. the crux of

  1684. the matter in

  1685. verse 11.

  1686. Apparently,

  1687. these false

  1688. teachers were

  1689. saying that

  1690. Paul himself

  1691. was preaching

  1692. that circumcision

  1693. was a way to

  1694. get right with

  1695. God.

  1696. I guess,

  1697. even though

  1698. this is a

  1699. flat lie,

  1700. perhaps it

  1701. was potentially

  1702. to add more

  1703. credibility to

  1704. what they

  1705. were saying.

  1706. And Paul

  1707. totally denies

  1708. this, but he

  1709. gets at the

  1710. heart of the

  1711. issue as

  1712. well.

  1713. If I still

  1714. preach circumcision,

  1715. why am I

  1716. still being

  1717. persecuted?

  1718. Later on in

  1719. chapter 6, he's

  1720. saying, I bear

  1721. on my body the

  1722. marks of Jesus.

  1723. Let everyone

  1724. else leave me

  1725. alone.

  1726. He's like,

  1727. my message of

  1728. the truth is

  1729. real, and I

  1730. have the marks

  1731. to prove it.

  1732. These false

  1733. teachers were

  1734. offended by

  1735. the cross.

  1736. They did not

  1737. like the idea

  1738. of being

  1739. persecuted, and

  1740. so therefore

  1741. they watered

  1742. down the

  1743. message, the

  1744. exclusive truth

  1745. of the cross.

  1746. Look at that

  1747. in verse 11.

  1748. In that case,

  1749. the offense of

  1750. the cross has

  1751. been removed.

  1752. Apparently, they

  1753. were okay with

  1754. the crucified

  1755. Messiah, but

  1756. they didn't like

  1757. the fact that it

  1758. was grace and

  1759. grace alone that

  1760. justifies a person

  1761. through the cross

  1762. of Christ.

  1763. They were

  1764. offended.

  1765. They couldn't

  1766. add to the

  1767. cross.

  1768. And here's where

  1769. we come to the

  1770. heart of all

  1771. kinds of false

  1772. teaching.

  1773. There have been

  1774. scores, hundreds

  1775. perhaps, of

  1776. deceptive false

  1777. messages, false

  1778. gospels, which

  1779. sound very similar

  1780. to true

  1781. Christianity from

  1782. the very first

  1783. century all the

  1784. way to now.

  1785. How are you

  1786. supposed to tell

  1787. the difference?

  1788. What's at the

  1789. heart of all

  1790. false teaching?

  1791. Well, it's

  1792. verse 11.

  1793. It's any

  1794. teaching that

  1795. takes offense

  1796. at the

  1797. exclusive claims

  1798. of a crucified

  1799. Messiah.

  1800. That's how you

  1801. can tell false

  1802. gospel from real

  1803. gospel.

  1804. Anything that

  1805. says,

  1806. eek,

  1807. crucified Jesus,

  1808. I have to

  1809. follow him?

  1810. He's the only

  1811. way?

  1812. He paid it

  1813. all?

  1814. Eh.

  1815. Anything that

  1816. flinches in the

  1817. face of the cross

  1818. is false teaching.

  1819. So whether it's

  1820. Jehovah's Witnesses

  1821. teaching or

  1822. Mormon teaching or

  1823. Roman Catholicism or

  1824. the prosperity gospel

  1825. or the self-help

  1826. gospel, they all

  1827. have one thing in

  1828. common.

  1829. That the message of

  1830. Christ crucified is

  1831. not enough to

  1832. justify a sinner

  1833. before God.

  1834. All of them

  1835. smuggle in some

  1836. form of human

  1837. effort as a

  1838. condition to

  1839. benefit from God's

  1840. grace to us in

  1841. Christ.

  1842. And in case we

  1843. were in any doubt

  1844. how Paul feels

  1845. about this.

  1846. Look at verse

  1847. 12.

  1848. I wish those who

  1849. unsettle you would

  1850. emasculate themselves.

  1851. Wait.

  1852. Did Paul just say

  1853. that he wished these

  1854. false teachers would

  1855. castrate themselves?

  1856. Yes.

  1857. Yes, he did.

  1858. He just said that.

  1859. That's in our

  1860. Bible.

  1861. You think reading the

  1862. Bible is boring.

  1863. No, there's

  1864. castration in the

  1865. Bible.

  1866. Wow.

  1867. Why is he saying

  1868. that?

  1869. Well, as we've

  1870. said before, he's

  1871. ticked.

  1872. He's feeling pretty

  1873. hot under the

  1874. collar here.

  1875. There is righteous

  1876. anger in Paul

  1877. towards these false

  1878. teachers.

  1879. And he's basically

  1880. saying this.

  1881. If these guys are

  1882. so obsessed with

  1883. cutting off pieces

  1884. of flesh from that

  1885. part of the body,

  1886. then why don't they

1887. just go all the way

  1888. and cut everything

  1889. off?

  1890. At least that would

  1891. expose them for the

  1892. frauds that they are,

  1893. thinking that the more

1894. they cut off, the more

  1895. righteous they'll be.

1896. I just love that this

1897. is part of my Bible.

1898. But let's feel how it

  1899. hits us.

1900. If Paul took this so

  1901. seriously, and he was

  1902. so zealous for the

1903. truth of the cross, and

  1904. for God's people's

  1905. trust in that message,

1906. then how much more so

  1907. does God take it

  1908. seriously when people

  1909. mess with his gospel

  1910. and with his bride?

  1911. We must zealously hold

  1912. to the exclusive truth

  1913. of the cross.

  1914. Because any other

  1915. persuasion is false.

  1916. And it's opposed not

1917. only by Paul, but by the

  1918. God of truth.

  1919. And he fiercely loves

  1920. his church.

1921. This is how to stand

  1922. firm in our freedom.

  1923. By assuming a firm,

  1924. defensive position around

  1925. the exclusive truth of

  1926. the cross.

  1927. Like Matt said last

  1928. week, like a coach,

  1929. football coach, holding

1930. up a blocking pad, and

  1931. with a good physical

  1932. firm stance.

1933. We need to do that

  1934. around the truth of

  1935. the cross.

1936. Well, how should we do

  1937. this?

  1938. Well, personally, we need

  1939. to savor the cross.

1940. We need to ask ourselves

  1941. the question, what if

  1942. there was no cross?

1943. What if Jesus had said

1944. no to the Father in

  1945. Gethsemane?

1946. What if Jesus had never

  1947. gone to the cross?

1948. What would that mean for

  1949. my current relationship

  1950. with God?

1951. The answer to that is

  1952. chilling.

1953. It would mean that I

  1954. would be under the

  1955. righteous wrath of God

  1956. now, in real time,

  1957. because of my rebellion

  1958. against him.

1959. Because my sin is that

1960. bad, and God is that

  1961. good.

  1962. It would mean there

  1963. is no way out.

  1964. There's no other way

  1965. out except through the

  1966. cross.

1967. It would mean that God

1968. is against me, not for

  1969. me.

1970. It would mean that I

  1971. await an eternity of

  1972. experiencing God's holy

  1973. anger and hot judgment.

1974. We need to savor the

  1975. cross.

1976. And that would make us

  1977. assume a firm defensive

  1978. stance against it.

1979. But not only should we

  1980. seek to zealously hold

1981. fast to the truth of

  1982. the cross personally,

  1983. but we should also,

1984. as the church, take the

  1985. truth very seriously.

  1986. It's truth that's built

  1987. around the cross.

  1988. In verse 7, it's evident

  1989. that Paul was ticked,

  1990. really ticked, about how

  1991. this twisted teaching of

  1992. self-salvation had

  1993. infiltrated the church and

  1994. turned the Galatians away

  1995. from the truth, from

  1996. obeying the truth.

1997. And we should be too.

1998. That doesn't mean we go

1999. around with knives in our

  2000. hands and threaten

  2001. encastration for anyone

  2002. who says something

  2003. differently than the

  2004. Bible.

2005. That's not the point of

  2006. the passage.

2007. It does mean that we

  2008. must speak the truth,

  2009. even if the truth

  2010. offends.

2011. The message of the cross

  2012. is offensive.

  2013. It offends human pride.

  2014. It offends a human

  2015. sense of control.

2016. And we must try to do

2017. speak that truth in an

  2018. inoffensive way, always

2019. with love, but like yeast,

  2020. falsehood can spread and

  2021. infect quickly.

2022. So we must take the truth

  2023. seriously.

2024. Not get floppy on it.

  2025. We must pray for

2026. discernment to be able to

  2027. recognize falsehood and

2028. pray for humility as we

  2029. address it.

2030. But address it we must, as a

  2031. church.

2032. And it's not just for

2033. pastors and leaders to do

  2034. that.

  2035. Paul tells Timothy in

  2036. first Timothy, the church

2037. of the living God is the

2038. pillar and buttress of the

  2039. truth.

  2040. It's not just pastors.

  2041. It's everybody.

2042. So we must stand firm in

2043. the zealously so in the

  2044. exclusive truth of the

  2045. cross of Christ.

2046. It is our certain hope and

  2047. our freedom.

2048. And we must stand firm in it.

  2049. This last week, Brass

  2050. Community School, which is

2051. where my kids go to school,

  2052. hosted a commemoration of

  2053. the arrival of African

2054. slaves in the Americas, which

2055. occurred 400 years ago in

  2056. 1619.

2057. It was a great way to build

2058. an awareness of our history,

  2059. our nation's history.

2060. Jess and two of my kids went

2061. to it, and they learned a

2062. lot about the stage in our

  2063. nation's past.

2064. And at the event, there were

  2065. quotes by African slaves

  2066. posted on the walls.

2067. And one of them was a quote by

2068. Elizabeth Freeman, who was a

  2069. former slave.

  2070. It's a powerful quote.

2071. Any time, any time while I was a

2072. slave, if one minute's freedom

2073. had been offered to me, and I

2074. had been told that I must die at

2075. the end of that minute, I would

  2076. have taken it.

2077. Just to stand one minute on God's

  2078. earth, a free woman, I would.

2079. What if, church, what if true

2080. freedom in Christ were as

2081. precious to us as earthly freedom

  2082. was to Elizabeth Freeman?

  2083. Let's take the keys.

2084. Let's hop into our freedom of

2085. knowing and belonging to Christ

2086. by faith, hoping only in him, and

2087. guarding the truth of the gospel,

2088. faithful, and enjoy and experience

2089. and stand firm in our freedom,

2090. because that's why he set us free.

  2091. Let's pray.

2092. Father, you know how hard it is for

2093. us to live in the freedom that

  2094. Jesus purchased for us.

2095. Lord, we ask that you would help

2096. us to identify false hopes and to

2097. shift all of our real and true

  2098. hope onto Christ.

2099. Help us to do that not just now on

  2100. Sunday morning.

2101. Help us to do it tomorrow.

2102. Help us to do it the rest of this

  2103. week.

2104. Help us, Lord, not to lose our joy

2105. in the freedom that you've

  2106. purchased for us.

2107. Guard us from hamster wheels of

  2108. human effort.

2109. Help us, Lord, to speak the truth

2110. to one another, to remind us to

2111. place our hope where it belongs.

2112. Give us the grace, God, to zealously

  2113. hold to your truth.

2114. We need your help, God.

2115. Help us to delight in your amazing

  2116. grace.

  2117. In Jesus' name, amen.
