  1. Well, if you are not already there, please open your Bible to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 1. John's the fourth gospel, fourth book in the New Testament.

    John 1 chapter mention

  3. And so we're going to be looking at the first five verses of John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. Well, growing up, I was always a good student.

  5. It was one of those things, I was just good at school, and so that's why I liked it, because I was good at it.

  6. Except for one subject, math.

  7. Anyone else with me?

  8. I was not the greatest math student.

  9. I have vivid memories, in fact, of staying up late with my dad at the kitchen table in eighth grade, agonizing over algebra.

  10. I just kept saying, Dad, I just don't get it.

  11. This is supposed to be math.

  12. Why are there letters?

  13. What's with the X, Y, and the Z?

  14. But because I was a good student, I kept trying.

  15. But my relationship with my math classes was never very affectionate, and it was always rather complicated.

  16. And then I went to college, and I became a history major, hoping I would not have to take any math classes,

  17. but I did have to take one, and it was calculus.

  18. I was not looking forward to it.

  19. But on the first day of calculus class, something was different.

  20. It was my professor.

  21. Dr. Piston made calculus real to me.

  22. He was patient.

  23. He was patient.

  24. He used real-life examples.

  25. And not only did he make math understandable to me, but he began to unlock the wonder of it to me.

  26. He showed me the beauty of God's world through the language of mathematics, and I actually started to enjoy it.

  27. In short, Dr. Piston made math known to me.

  28. He warmly introduced me to it.

  29. And ironically enough, my experience with calculus is very much what Christmas is all about.

  30. For many of us, God is a bit like math.

  31. He seems distant, maybe boring, cold, unknowable.

  32. Perhaps he's kind of mysterious, kind of out there, not close, maybe even vaguely threatening.

  33. Even for those of us who know him and have been in a relationship with him for years, there are seasons when he seems particularly absent or distant or not very real.

  34. I'm sure most everyone in this room has felt that way at one time or another about God.

  35. And the Bible explains why that's the case.

  36. Each of us is born with a heart that's naturally opposed to God.

  37. Because we were born with a nature bent toward ourselves, not toward God and his way.

  38. So even if you know about God, maybe you were raised in the church your whole life, it's easy to think about God as distant or unknown, maybe even threatening.

  39. A guy who kind of frowns on us a lot.

  40. All this is a perspective problem.

  41. We have a bent and fractured understanding of who God is because of our bent and fractured sinful hearts.

  42. So if our perspective is so shattered, how do we begin to know God?

  43. How can we not just begin to understand him as he truly is, but begin to wonder at him, to enjoy him as he truly is?

  44. Well, we need a Dr. Piston.

  45. We need someone to introduce us to him, to make him known to us.

  46. And in John 1, we're introduced to just such a person.

  47. Someone who's able to show us exactly who God is.

  48. Not only so that we can understand some facts about him, but that we can know him personally.

  49. And have a life-giving relationship with him.

  50. And what the Apostle John is going to tell us is that we can only know God through the unique person of Jesus Christ, the Word.

  51. We can only know him through the unique person of Jesus.

  52. So for the next few Sundays during Advent, we're going to explore the first 18 verses of John's Gospel together.

  53. We're going to mine its depths to understand who this Word person is.

  54. His person, which I'm going to talk about today.

  55. Next week, his mission.

  56. And the week after that, his glory.

  57. This morning, let's look at the first part of this passage.

  58. Verses 1 to 5 to discover who this Word is, who is a person.

  59. And here, we're going to discover that John makes four claims about this unique person of the Word who makes God known to us.

  60. Four claims.

  61. Let's start with the first one.

  62. It's found, the very first phrase, it's this claim.

  63. He is God's perfect self-expression.

  64. The Word is God's perfect self-expression.

  65. In the beginning was the Word.

  66. The Word.

  67. Why start with the Word?

  68. Well, not all, but many of John's original readers would have had some familiarity with who Jesus of Nazareth was.

  69. He seems to have written his gospel to kind of a wide audience, but maybe particularly for believers who already knew and trusted in Jesus,

  70. and maybe folks who were curious about who this Jesus was.

  71. So most folks who read this gospel would be coming to these words with an assumption that this book is about Jesus of Nazareth.

  72. So it's a little curious why John starts with, in the beginning was the Word.

  73. It's a little curious.

  74. He doesn't actually mention Jesus by name until verse 17.

  75. But he starts with the Word.

  76. Well, it's not really curious.

  77. Actually, it's brilliant.

  78. Pretend for a moment that you couldn't write or speak or sign or communicate with anyone in any way at all.

  79. Now, people could see you.

  80. They could observe your patterns of behavior.

  81. They could study your daily rhythms.

  82. They could discover a lot of things about you.

  83. But even if they were with you 24-7, would they know you?

  84. No.

  85. Of course not.

  86. We're known by our words.

  87. We know others by their words.

  88. It's the way we express our feelings, our values, our priorities, who we are.

  89. And it's the same with God.

  90. God, from the very beginning, has been a talking God.

  91. And amazingly, he's not talking in some heavenly language.

  92. No, he's speaking in human languages that we can actually understand.

  93. He wants to be known by us.

  94. He wants us to understand him.

  95. And he has given us his recorded word written down in human history and preserved through the centuries so that we might understand and have a personal relationship with him.

  96. In the Old Testament, God's word is seen to be the way he expresses himself personally and powerfully to his people, particularly as their creator, as their ruler, and their rescuer.

  97. By his word, God creates something out of nothing.

  98. That's how the Bible begins.

  99. By his word, God speaks so that his people know how to live well under his rule.

  100. He tells Adam and Eve, enjoy the garden.

  101. Don't eat from that tree.

  102. He rules over them by his word.

  103. But also by his word, God rescues his people again and again from their own foolishness and sinfulness.

  104. Just read the prophets.

  105. God's speaking his rescuing words to his people.

  106. So it's by his word that God expresses himself personally to his people as their creator, their ruler, and their rescuer.

  107. So it's no surprise that John then chooses the word as the title for the one who is God's mirror image.

  108. As our creator, ruler, and rescuer.

  109. He is God's perfect self-expression.

  110. If you drive up the road a little bit north to the Milwaukee Art Museum, you will probably find some examples of human self-expression.

  111. Through creative mediums like painting or sculpture, photography.

  112. You might even find really odd self-expressions.

  113. It's like the banana duct taped to a wall that sold for $120,000 this last week at an art gallery in Miami.

  114. Self-expression.

  115. But human self-expressions are only partial and they're often corrupt.

  116. But this word, this self-expression of God is the one and only pure, full, undiluted, walking and talking expression of who God is.

  117. Later on in John's Gospel in chapter 14, one of Jesus' disciples, Philip, he says to Jesus,

  118. Show us the Father and it's enough for us.

  119. And Jesus responds by saying, Philip, have I been with you so long and you still don't know me?

  120. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  121. So when we look at Jesus, we see exactly who God is like.

  122. Not partially, perfectly.

  123. Three-dimensionally.

  124. From every angle.

  125. Jesus is God's perfect self-expression in a person.

  126. Look down at verse 18.

  127. No one has ever seen God.

  128. The only God who is at the Father's side.

  129. He has made him known.

  130. So John is not just saying that Jesus is a qualified messenger on God's behalf.

  131. Rather, he is the full and final revealing of who God is in a body.

  132. What is utterly astounding about this word, who is a person, is that this word became human.

  133. Look at verse 14.

  134. The word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  135. Someone else has said, he is everything that God wanted to say to us in a person.

  136. That's why John starts with the word.

  137. He wants us to have very clearly in our minds that Jesus of Nazareth was God's perfect self-expression.

  138. That if we want to know God, we must know Jesus.

  139. He's our Dr. Piston.

  140. He's going to introduce us to God personally.

  141. He is going to help us not only understand who God is, but begin to wonder at who he is and enjoy him through the person of the word.

  142. And it is that word that is the infant in the manger.

  143. He is God's perfect self-expression.

  144. And at Christmas time, we tend to focus on the baby that was born, but we must not separate the baby from the man.

  145. All that he said and did was a mirror image of the mind and will and heart of God.

  146. And yet, even as a baby in the manger, not being able to speak or do anything, we see God's perfect self-expression of grace and truth,

  147. as God says later on in verse, or as John says in verse 17.

  148. The simple fact of the incarnation, of the mind-numbing thought of God becoming human,

  149. is enough to fully express the mercy and faithfulness, the grace and truth of God in the person of Jesus.

  150. So that's, first of all, who he is.

  151. He is God's perfect self-expression, the word.

  152. That's the first claim.

  153. Well, if we keep reading verses 1 and 2, we'll see John's second claim about the unique person of the word.

  154. It's this.

  155. He has the closest possible relationship with God.

  156. He has the closest possible relationship with God.

  157. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

  158. He was in the beginning with God.

  159. Well, John doesn't really mess around here.

  160. He just throws us right into the deep end.

  161. He doesn't start us off in the shallows.

  162. With very simple words and just two short sentences,

  163. John paints a beautiful and complex picture about this word's intimate relationship to God.

  164. Look at that first phrase in verse 1.

  165. In the beginning.

  166. It reminds us of another chapter 1, verse 1, doesn't it?

  167. Genesis 1, 1.

  168. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  169. But here, it's in the beginning, the word was.

  170. It doesn't say the word has existed since the beginning or from the beginning,

  171. implying that he had some origin.

  172. It's just rather, in the beginning, he was there.

  173. Putting him pretty close to God, the creator of all things.

  174. And that's where John goes next.

  175. Look at the middle part of the verse.

  176. With the, and the word was with God.

  177. That word translated with isn't the standard word for with that the New Testament uses in its original language.

  178. The word that John uses here not only implies alongside and in the same space as,

  179. but nearness, intimacy, closeness.

  180. We could assume that from his previous statement that the word was in the beginning,

  181. we could assume that that was true, that the word had to be in some sort of close relationship with God.

  182. But John's making it really explicit here.

  183. He wants us to see an intimacy of relationship between the word, God's own self-expression, and God himself.

  184. But not only that, since the word is in close relationship to God,

  185. this also implies that the word is therefore distinct from God.

  186. We don't have relationship with ourselves.

  187. We have relationship with people who are other from us, distinct from us.

  188. So here we see that the word is somehow other from God, somehow distinct,

  189. having a distinct personhood that is in relationship, close relationship to God.

  190. But then John drops a bomb with the next statement.

  191. The word was God.

  192. If we've been picking up what John's laying down so far,

  193. the word has always existed in close relationship with God,

  194. then we're all, they're probably thinking, okay, that's a little weird,

  195. perhaps, maybe this word is some kind of elevated angel

  196. or lesser kind of divine being that is in close relationship with God.

  197. But no, John is making this astounding claim.

  198. The word, who is God's perfect self-expression,

  199. is not only eternally existing, not only in close relationship with God,

  200. but this word shares God's very being.

  201. This word is, by nature, God.

  202. He shares in God's godness.

  203. And yet, yet, this word is also distinct from God.

  204. He's his own person.

  205. And it doesn't just say that the word was somehow partially divine

  206. or had divine qualities about him,

  207. but that Jesus, the word, is fully God.

  208. There's no other way to translate the phrase.

  209. Jehovah's Witnesses might want to try to convince us otherwise,

  210. like, oh, he's kind of a God.

  211. No, there's no other way to translate it.

  212. The word was God.

  213. Well, I told you that John throws us right into the deep end.

  214. In verse 2, John restates the same claims, just in a different order.

  215. It's as if he's saying, yes, you didn't misunderstand me.

  216. I did just say that.

  217. That's what I'm claiming about this word.

  218. The one who is God, has eternally existed with God,

  219. and close relationship with God,

  220. and he does share God's very being while being his own person at the same time.

  221. It's almost like you can see the smile on John's face

  222. as he's trying to see us work it out.

  223. What a person.

  224. What a unique person.

  225. Listen, there's just no other person like this.

  226. There is no one who has eternally existed in relationship with God

  227. as God's perfect self-expression,

  228. and shared God's very being as God,

  229. and then become a human.

  230. This unique person is the baby in the manger.

  231. Don't be fooled by the sentimentality of the season.

  232. The baby that Mary birthed is the God-man.

  233. Divinity united with humanity in a person.

  234. There is no halo around him,

  235. no soft glow emanating off his person to mark his uniqueness,

  236. but John is helping us see exactly who he is.

  237. The one whose birthday we celebrate this month

  238. is the one who had no origin, no beginning.

  239. In fact, he existed before the universe existed,

  240. before time began.

  241. And people, ever since the first century,

  242. ever since Jesus first showed up,

  243. we're trying to nail this down.

  244. How is this possible that God and man

  245. could be together in the same person?

  246. We kind of want to write a recipe for this mystery,

  247. figure it out.

  248. But the fact is, we're in the deep end of the pool.

  249. There's no way we can swim to the bottom

  250. and fully explore how this works.

  251. It is beyond us.

  252. John doesn't explain it for us.

  253. God doesn't want us to go there.

  254. We can't.

  255. He just wants us to behold it and be in awe.

  256. God's perfect self-expression,

  257. eternally existing in the closest possible relationship with God,

  258. sharing God's very being,

  259. became a human.

  260. And we're just supposed to have mouths open.

  261. This great mystery must lead us not only to the end of our intellectual understanding,

  262. but also to our knees.

  263. One cannot celebrate Christmas flippantly if this is what Christmas is about.

  264. If we do, we dishonor the God-man.

  265. If we do not obey the Christmas hymn's words,

  266. Oh, come, let us adore him,

  267. then we fail to acknowledge the most momentous event in human history,

  268. when God, the author of creation,

  269. wrote himself into his own story and became human

  270. to show us who he is and to bring us back to him.

  271. And if that weren't enough,

  272. if our brains can still handle it,

  273. let's look at the third claim.

  274. John makes another claim about the unique person of this word.

  275. He is responsible for the creation of all things.

  276. He is responsible for the creation of all things.

  277. Look at verse 3.

  278. All things were made through him,

  279. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  280. Apart from the person of the word,

  281. we would not exist.

  282. Nothing would exist.

  283. Notice how the apostle states it positively,

  284. and then just to make sure we get the point,

  285. he puts it negatively.

  286. All things were made through him,

  287. then negatively.

  288. Without him,

  289. not anything,

  290. not one thing would be made.

  291. So that means that dragonflies exist

  292. because of and through Jesus.

  293. Spiral galaxies exist because of and through Jesus.

  294. Music exists because of and through Jesus.

  295. Gravity exists because of and through Jesus.

  296. Tyrannosaurus rex exists because of and through Jesus.

  297. Your next door neighbor exists because of and through Jesus.

  298. Jesus.

  299. Your spouse exists because of and through Jesus.

  300. You, your life, your body, your thoughts,

  301. your past, your present, your future,

  302. you exist because of and through Jesus.

  303. And then later on in Colossians 1,

  304. Paul will add another preposition to that mix.

  305. Not only do all things exist because of and through Jesus,

  306. but they exist for him.

  307. Not only do all things exist because of him,

  308. they exist for him.

  309. All of creation,

  310. from blue whales to Jupiter to hummingbirds,

  311. it all exists for him.

  312. For his glory,

  313. for his purposes,

  314. for his pleasure.

  315. He's the one that gives creation its meaning and its purpose.

  316. If we see our own existence as existing somehow apart from him,

  317. we're missing the very thing that gives meaning and purpose to our life

  318. because we were and all things were created through him.

  319. But like this,

  320. is Paul,

  321. is John just kind of making this up out of thin air?

  322. No.

  323. He's just putting his knowledge of the Old Testament

  324. together with his knowledge of who Jesus revealed himself to be.

  325. You see,

  326. the Bible is kind of like a curtain on a stage.

  327. It's slowly and steadily pulled back,

  328. revealing more and more detail about what has been previously said.

  329. So on the first page of Scripture,

  330. we learn that God created everything through his word.

  331. By speaking,

  332. let there be light.

  333. And there was light.

  334. Psalm 33, 6 says something similar.

  335. By the word of Yahweh,

  336. the heavens were made.

  337. So we already know that God created all things through his word.

  338. But now,

  339. John has given that curtain rope an extra tug,

  340. revealing that the word by which God created the universe

  341. is actually a person.

  342. So this means that the Father and the Son

  343. were in divine partnership

  344. in the creation of the world.

  345. And maybe you're wondering,

  346. how?

  347. How did that work?

  348. Give me some more specifics here.

  349. But he just doesn't go there.

  350. And honestly,

  351. the rest of Scripture doesn't go that far either.

  352. because there are things that the human mind simply can't understand.

  353. Again,

  354. we're in the deep end of the pool here.

  355. We can't swim to the bottom.

  356. That's okay.

  357. Who would want to worship something that you completely understood?

  358. It's right and good for us to come to this and say,

  359. I don't know how exactly this works,

  360. but I see it.

  361. And then John,

  362. in the rest of his gospel,

  363. he demonstrates this powerfully about Jesus.

  364. Only the co-creator of the world

  365. could transform the chemical properties of water

  366. into delicious wine

  367. just with his word.

  368. Only the one through whom all things were made

  369. could take a boy's lunch

  370. and feed a vast multitude

  371. till they were stuffed.

  372. Only the author of life

  373. could speak a word

  374. to a man who was dead for four days

  375. and revitalize every decomposing cell in his body

  376. so that he walked out of the tomb perfectly whole.

  377. And so it is this awe-inspiring word

  378. through whom God made all things

  379. who is lying in the manger.

  380. He's the co-author of life.

  381. He's the co-architect of the universe.

  382. He is the co-creator of every living thing.

  383. Without him,

  384. we would not only know or experience

  385. any good thing in this life,

  386. we wouldn't even exist.

  387. We owe him our existence.

  388. But John's not done.

  389. He has one claim left.

  390. It's highly related to this last one,

  391. but it gets at something even more marvelous

  392. about this word

  393. who is a person

  394. who is making God known to us.

  395. Here's the fourth thing

  396. he wants us to know.

  397. His life

  398. is our light

  399. in the darkness.

  400. His life

  401. is our light

  402. in the darkness.

  403. It's right there in verse four.

  404. In him was life

  405. and the life

  406. was the light

  407. of men.

  408. Verse five,

  409. the light shines

  410. in the darkness

  411. and the darkness

  412. has not

  413. overcome it.

  414. So because all things

  415. came into being

  416. through him,

  417. the first part of verse four

  418. is just not surprising, right?

  419. In him was life.

  420. So this absolutely unique person

  421. of the word

  422. through whom God

  423. made the universe

  424. who shares God's very being

  425. and nature,

  426. he has life

  427. in him.

  428. Now we shouldn't think

  429. of a Genesis 2

  430. kind of life.

  431. Of God breathing

  432. the breath of life

  433. into a lump of dust

  434. called Adam

  435. and making him

  436. a living being.

  437. Not that kind of life.

  438. Because that kind of life

  439. is a completely different

  440. kind of life

  441. that the person

  442. of the word

  443. is said to have here.

  444. Our kind of life

  445. is a created life.

  446. It's a dependent life.

  447. It comes from a source.

  448. Our life is dependent

  449. on other things

  450. for existence.

  451. Not only upon food

  452. and air

  453. and water,

  454. but ultimately

  455. upon God himself.

  456. who is the giver

  457. of life.

  458. But the one

  459. through whom

  460. all things were made

  461. does not have

  462. that kind

  463. of dependent life.

  464. The life

  465. in him

  466. is not from

  467. anything.

  468. The word

  469. has uncreated

  470. life

  471. that he shares

  472. with the father.

  473. Later on

  474. in John chapter 5

    John 5 chapter mention

  475. Jesus will say

  476. as the father

  477. has life

  478. in himself

  479. so he has granted

  480. to the son

  481. to have life

  482. in himself.

  483. That's the son

  484. has the same

  485. kind of

  486. in himself

  487. life

  488. that the father

  489. has.

  490. A self-existent

  491. life.

  492. It's life

  493. that comes

  494. from nowhere.

  495. It's uncreated.

  496. It's resident

  497. in his very person.

  498. Theologians

  499. from an older

  500. generation

  501. called this

  502. kind of

  503. self-existence

  504. God's

  505. aseity.

  506. It basically

  507. means

  508. God's

  509. from himself-ness.

  510. and the son

  511. shares that

  512. same kind

  513. of self-existing

  514. life.

  515. He always

  516. has

  517. and he always

  518. will.

  519. What does

  520. John say

  521. about this

  522. unique

  523. self-existing

  524. life that the

  525. word has?

  526. Look at verse 4.

  527. That life

  528. was the light

  529. of men.

  530. Well

  531. typical of the

  532. apostle John

  533. there's a

  534. surface level

  535. meaning here

  536. and then there's

  537. a deeper

  538. meaning.

  539. On the surface

  540. it seems that

  541. John

  542. is just saying

  543. that unless

  544. we recognize

  545. that God

  546. the word

  547. is the source

  548. of all things

  549. we can't

  550. understand

  551. our reality.

  552. We don't

  553. have the

  554. light of

  555. understanding

  556. if we don't

  557. recognize him

  558. as the author

  559. of life.

  560. So Psalm 36

  561. states something

  562. like this

  563. with you

  564. God

  565. is the

  566. fountain

  567. of life.

  568. In your

  569. light

  570. do we

  571. see

  572. light.

  573. God

  574. being the

  575. abundant

  576. source of

  577. life

  578. is like

  579. a fountain

  580. ceaselessly

  581. flowing

  582. with water

  583. and it

  584. is in

  585. the light

  586. of acknowledging

  587. that he

  588. is the

  589. creator

  590. and the

  591. source

  592. of life

  593. do we

  594. actually

  595. understand

  596. what it

  597. means for

  598. us to

  599. be his

  600. creatures.

  601. To understand

  602. reality as

  603. it truly

  604. is.

  605. And unless

  606. we begin

  607. to see it

  608. that way

  609. we're

  610. deceived.

  611. Otherwise

  612. we begin

  613. thinking our

  614. life comes

  615. from ourselves

  616. and we

  617. start going

  618. off depending

  619. upon ourselves.

  620. only by

  621. believing the

  622. truth that

  623. all life

  624. originated

  625. with and

  626. is sustained

  627. by God

  628. himself can

  629. we actually

  630. understand what's

  631. around us.

  632. And so all

  633. that John is

  634. doing in

  635. verse 4 is

  636. just tying that

  637. biblical truth to

  638. the word,

  639. to the son.

  640. We must

  641. understand that

  642. everything we see

  643. around us came

  644. into being

  645. through the

  646. person of the

  647. word,

  648. Jesus Christ.

  649. He's the

  650. light we walk

  651. around in.

  652. Everything around

  653. us has the

  654. phrase created

  655. by the

  656. father through

  657. the son written

  658. on it.

  659. Everything from

  660. supernovas to

  661. snails to

  662. shoulder joints,

  663. it all proclaims

  664. the glory of

  665. Jesus, the

  666. wisdom of

  667. Jesus, the

  668. beauty of

  669. Jesus, the

  670. creativity of

  671. Jesus, the

  672. centrality of

  673. Jesus.

  674. So in one

  675. sense that's

  676. basically what

  677. John is saying

  678. here.

  679. He's saying

  680. unless we

  681. recognize him

  682. as a source

  683. of our life

  684. we don't have

  685. light.

  686. We can't see.

  687. We don't

  688. understand our

  689. reality.

  690. But I think

  691. John is also

  692. saying something

  693. a little bit

  694. deeper about

  695. this light.

  696. Look at

  697. verse 5.

  698. The light

  699. shines in

  700. the darkness

  701. and the

  702. darkness has

  703. not overcome

  704. it.

  705. And then we

  706. get further

  707. clues that

  708. John's not

  709. done talking

  710. about this

  711. light.

  712. He keeps

  713. talking about

  714. the light

  715. in verses

  716. 6-13.

  717. In verse 7

  718. this light

  719. is borne

  720. witness to

  721. by John

  722. the Baptist

  723. so that

  724. everyone might

  725. believe in

  726. this light.

  727. And then in

  728. verse 9

  729. we see that

  730. this light

  731. was coming

  732. into the

  733. world to

  734. give light

  735. to everyone.

  736. And he

  737. came to a

  738. world in

  739. darkness.

  740. A world

  741. that was

  742. made through

  743. him and a

  744. world that

  745. rejected him.

  746. So we

  747. begin to see

  748. this isn't

  749. just about

  750. God's

  751. the sun's

  752. life being

  753. our light

  754. understanding

  755. who we are

  756. as creatures.

  757. It's about

  758. he's invading

  759. the darkness

  760. to bring us

  761. light again.

  762. yes he is

  763. responsible for

  764. our existence

  765. and in that

  766. way yes he's

  767. our light

  768. but the

  769. plain fact

  770. of it is

  771. we rejected

  772. that light.

  773. All of us

  774. from way back

  775. in the beginning

  776. with Adam

  777. and Eve

  778. to right here

  779. with us

  780. we ignore

  781. the fact that

  782. we are

  783. creatures

  784. dependent upon

  785. God.

  786. Adam and

  787. Eve freely

  788. ate from

  789. the tree

  790. of life.

  791. they were

  792. enjoying

  793. God's

  794. gracious

  795. gift of

  796. life

  797. and existence.

  798. They walked

  799. in the light

  800. of his

  801. life

  802. enjoying

  803. the direct

  804. and unshielded

  805. glory of

  806. his presence

  807. as we were

  808. meant to.

  809. They enjoyed

  810. him through

  811. his good

  812. gifts

  813. they walked

  814. in his

  815. light

  816. but then they

  817. listened to

  818. the one who

  819. can disguise

  820. himself as

  821. an angel

  822. of light.

  823. He promised

  824. that they

  825. didn't need

  826. God's light

  827. they could

  828. create their

  829. own.

  830. Satan's

  831. dismal

  832. lie

  833. tells us

  834. that we

  835. don't need

  836. the one

  837. from whom

  838. all life

  839. and light

  840. come.

  841. We can be

  842. our own

  843. life

  844. we can be

  845. our own

  846. light

  847. we can

  848. create our

  849. own reality

  850. where we

  851. are like

  852. God

  853. but that

  854. is like

  855. telling a

  856. branch

  857. that it

  858. can cut

  859. itself

  860. off from

  861. the trunk

  862. and plant

  863. itself

  864. as its

  865. own

  866. tree.

  867. It is a

  868. self-inflicted

  869. sentence of

  870. death

  871. and so we

  872. became creatures

  873. of darkness

  874. as Paul

  875. says in

  876. Romans 1

  877. our foolish

  878. hearts were

  879. darkened

  880. as we

  881. declared our

  882. independence

  883. from our

  884. source of

  885. life and

  886. light and

  887. we no

  888. longer knew

  889. him.

  890. Like a

  891. rebellious

  892. planet

  893. breaking free

  894. from its

  895. orbit around

  896. its life

  897. giving sun

  898. we hurtled

  899. into the

  900. outer darkness

  901. of cold

  902. and empty

  903. space

  904. where only

  905. death and

  906. destruction

  907. lurk.

  908. But just

  909. as God

  910. in the

  911. beginning

  912. expressed

  913. himself

  914. through

  915. his

  916. word

  917. and gave

  918. light

  919. to banish

  920. the

  921. darkness

  922. he expressed

  923. himself

  924. again in

  925. the person

  926. of his

  927. word

  928. to be

  929. our light

  930. and to

  931. shine

  932. again in

  933. the midst

  934. of our

  935. darkness.

  936. Jesus'

  937. birth was

  938. the dawning

  939. of another

  940. creation

  941. work

  942. a new

  943. creation

  944. the light

  945. and life

  946. giving sun

  947. drew near

  948. to its

  949. rebellious

  950. planet

  951. the

  952. uncreated

  953. life

  954. and light

  955. of the

  956. word

  957. is not

  958. only

  959. our

  960. only

  961. source

  962. of

  963. existence

  964. but also

  965. our

  966. only hope

  967. of redemption

  968. and renewed

  969. relationship

  970. with God.

  971. As Jesus

  972. would later

  973. say in the

  974. gospel of

  975. John

  976. I am

  977. the light

  978. of the

  979. world

  980. all those

  981. who follow

  982. me will

  983. not walk

  984. in darkness

  985. but have

  986. the light

  987. of life.

  988. Look down

  989. at verses

  990. 12 and

  991. 13

  992. to all

  993. who did

  994. receive him

  995. who recognized

  996. the light

  997. and who

  998. believed in

  999. his name

  1000. he gave

  1001. the right

  1002. to become

  1003. children of

  1004. God

  1005. who were

  1006. born

  1007. not of

  1008. blood

  1009. nor of

  1010. the will

  1011. of the

  1012. flesh

  1013. nor the

  1014. will

  1015. of man

  1016. but of

  1017. God.

  1018. Only

  1019. those who

  1020. receive

  1021. and embrace

  1022. the light

  1023. of the

  1024. unique

  1025. person

  1026. of the

  1027. word

  1028. by faith

  1029. can be

  1030. restored

  1031. to a

  1032. new

  1033. kind

  1034. of

  1035. existence

  1036. a new

  1037. birth

  1038. born again

  1039. into a

  1040. new life

  1041. that only

  1042. the word

  1043. can bring.

  1044. And that

  1045. light started

  1046. shining into

  1047. the darkness

  1048. and it

  1049. created a

  1050. conflict.

  1051. The darkness

  1052. would try

  1053. its best

  1054. to overcome

  1055. the light

  1056. of the

  1057. person

  1058. of the

  1059. word.

  1060. Even as a

  1061. baby his

  1062. life was

  1063. plotted against

  1064. by Herod.

  1065. Satan brought

  1066. out custom

  1067. made temptations

  1068. to bring him

  1069. down in the

  1070. desert.

  1071. Religious

  1072. leaders planned

  1073. his downfall

  1074. that eventually

  1075. they succeeded

  1076. in doing.

  1077. The light

  1078. of the

  1079. world was

  1080. extinguished

  1081. in shame

  1082. and in

  1083. despair

  1084. on a

  1085. Roman

  1086. crucifixion

  1087. stake.

  1088. Darkness

  1089. had succeeded.

  1090. But in

  1091. the end

  1092. the only

  1093. thing that

  1094. darkness

  1095. had succeeded

  1096. in doing

  1097. was sealing

  1098. its doom.

  1099. For the

  1100. light that

  1101. it had

  1102. extinguished

  1103. exploded

  1104. again into

  1105. a blaze

  1106. of resurrection

  1107. brilliance

  1108. that would

  1109. never go

  1110. out.

  1111. And that

  1112. light still

  1113. shines in

  1114. the darkness.

  1115. darkness

  1116. because the

  1117. word that

  1118. was made

  1119. flesh,

  1120. the word

  1121. that gave

  1122. life,

  1123. it's his

  1124. life for

  1125. his own,

  1126. is the

  1127. word that

  1128. rose bodily

  1129. from the

  1130. grave and

  1131. who can

  1132. never die

  1133. again.

  1134. All those

  1135. who recognize

  1136. his light,

  1137. who see

  1138. Jesus for

  1139. who he

  1140. truly is,

  1141. and who

  1142. embrace him

  1143. by faith,

  1144. who draw

  1145. near to the

  1146. light and

  1147. walk in it,

  1148. they have the

  1149. promise of

  1150. eternal life.

  1151. So this is

  1152. the baby in

  1153. the manger.

  1154. He is our

  1155. only hope of

  1156. light and

  1157. life.

  1158. He is the

  1159. person of

  1160. the word.

  1161. He is the

  1162. one who has

  1163. made the

  1164. father known.

  1165. He's our

  1166. doctor piston.

  1167. He has

  1168. introduced us

  1169. to God long

  1170. after we have

  1171. forgotten him.

  1172. He is God's

  1173. perfect self

  1174. expression to

  1175. us because

  1176. he not only

  1177. was with

  1178. God in the

  1179. beginning but

  1180. he shares

  1181. God's very

  1182. being.

  1183. And he is

  1184. the creator

  1185. himself.

  1186. He is the

  1187. one through

  1188. whom all

  1189. things came

  1190. into being.

  1191. He is our

  1192. life, the

  1193. light who not

  1194. only gave us

  1195. created life but

  1196. offers us

  1197. eternal life in

  1198. the light that

  1199. continues to

  1200. shine unconquered

  1201. in the

  1202. darkness.

  1203. So how do

  1204. we respond to

  1205. this?

  1206. We must

  1207. recognize him

  1208. first of all.

  1209. We must

  1210. recognize that

  1211. there is no

  1212. one like

  1213. him.

  1214. He is the

  1215. one and

  1216. only true

  1217. word of

  1218. God, God's

  1219. perfect

  1220. communication to

  1221. us in a

  1222. person.

  1223. He is the

  1224. God man.

  1225. He is the

  1226. only way we

  1227. can truly know

  1228. God and be

  1229. rescued from

  1230. the darkness of

  1231. our sin.

  1232. Everything

  1233. revolves around

  1234. him.

  1235. So do you

  1236. recognize him

  1237. today?

  1238. God's

  1239. God.

  1240. You cannot

  1241. recognize him

  1242. and receive

  1243. him with a

  1244. yawn.

  1245. He demands

  1246. our full and

  1247. undivided

  1248. attention.

  1249. There is no

  1250. one like him.

  1251. You must

  1252. either acknowledge

  1253. him fully or

  1254. reject him

  1255. utterly but you

  1256. can't ignore

  1257. him.

  1258. Secondly, we

  1259. must embrace

  1260. him by faith.

1261. it doesn't matter whether you've heard about Jesus all your life

1262. or for the first time

1263. once you recognize him your only hope

1264. is to embrace him fully by faith

1265. at the end of John's gospel we read the reason he wrote it

  1266. he writes

1267. I wrote these things down so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ

1268. the son of God and by believing you may have life in his name

1269. there is no life apart from embracing

1270. this unique person by faith

1271. the one who became human as God

1272. to die for your sins so that you could have life

1273. if you have not embraced Jesus by faith

  1274. move toward him today

  1275. talk to somebody here

1276. whether it's an elder or pastor down here at front at the end of the service

1277. or someone next to you but respond

1278. he's your only hope of light and life

1279. and for the Christians in the room let me remind you

1280. that that life that we receive in his name

  1281. it's not just a future hope

1282. it is a present reality

  1283. it's a dynamic relationship with God

  1284. in Christ

1285. through the spirit's powerful presence at work in us

  1286. I don't know about you but

1287. it's really easy for me

1288. to get up in the morning

1289. and to start thinking about God as if he's math class

  1290. distant

  1291. boring

  1292. unknowable

  1293. maybe even threatening

1294. just this last week I had this happen

1295. and honestly it was this passage that God used

1296. to pull me out of it

  1297. to behold

1298. the fresh wonder of who God has revealed himself to be

  1299. in the person

  1300. the unique person

  1301. of his son

1302. so dwell on the person in the manger this week

  1303. remind yourself

1304. of who became flesh for you

1305. remind yourself of your utter dependence upon him

  1306. for life

  1307. and for light

1308. that is how we continue to embrace

  1309. this unique person

1310. who is our light in our life

  1311. now

1312. and he will be forever

  1313. and lastly

1314. we must not only recognize him

1315. not only embrace him by faith

1316. but we must adore him

  1317. this is

1318. this isn't much different from embracing him by faith

1319. because faith leads to adoration

1320. behold him in the manger

  1321. as the incarnated word

1322. behold him as the God man

  1323. God's perfect self-expression

  1324. when we see him

  1325. we see God

1326. so we must behold him

1327. and be in awe of him

1328. behold him not only in the manger

1329. but also in his work on the cross

  1330. in the empty tomb

1331. the light who gave himself for us

1332. and rose again to shine forever

1333. as our only hope of life

  1334. so behold him too

1335. as your only true future hope

1336. he's the thing we count on

  1337. church

  1338. in the heavenly city

  1339. there's no sun

  1340. there's no moon

  1341. the lamb himself

  1342. is our light

  1343. both now

  1344. and forever

  1345. so come

  1346. let us adore him

  1347. let's pray

  1348. father

1349. you revealed yourself to us

1350. you made yourself known to us

  1351. through the person

  1352. of the word

  1353. Jesus Christ

1354. father would you fill our eyes

  1355. fresh with faith

1356. help us to see again

1357. help us not only to recognize him

  1358. but to embrace him

1359. to have life in his name

  1360. to depend upon him

  1361. throughout the week

  1362. as our life

  1363. and our light

  1364. help us Lord

1365. not to walk in darkness

1366. but to walk in the light of life

  1367. help us Lord

  1368. to see

1369. so we may adore you

1370. and have joy in you

1371. in Christ's name we pray

  1372. Amen

  1373. haste

  1374. Have a nice day

  1375. moment

  1376. flowers

  1377. we pray

  1378. for God

  1379. who parece

  1380. to see

  1381. God

  1382. who loves you

  1383. and how

  1384. are we

  1385. our light

  1386. Good

  1387. we pray

  1388. we pray

  1389. them

  1390. our

  1391. hope

  1392. we pray

  1393. thank you

  1394. for being

  1395. helpful

  1396. folks

  1397. isches

  1398. Do me

  1399. this

  1400. we pray

  1401. we pray

  1402. good

  1403. ma
