  1. Paul writes in Philippians chapter 2 that Jesus did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2. But instead he made himself nothing.

  3. He took on the form of a servant and he was born in the likeness of men.

  4. This is Paul's version of the word became flesh.

  5. That's how he describes it.

  6. Of course this is amazing, astonishing, mysterious news.

  7. The Christian belief that God became a human being.

  8. The incarnation is the fancy word we use.

  9. This belief is phenomenal.

  10. It's full of wonder and mystery and it's impossible to fully kind of wrap our minds around.

  11. What this means.

  12. But it's true.

  13. And at the same time as we imagine this truth that God became a human being.

  14. That the word became flesh.

  15. It just begs the question doesn't it?

  16. Why in the world would God do that?

  17. Why would he come?

  18. Why did the eternal son forever in glorious relationship with his father become the human Jesus of Nazareth?

  19. Why?

  20. Why?

  21. Why?

  22. Why?

  23. Why?

  24. Well the goal of this morning's time is to answer that why.

  25. See the word became flesh on purpose.

  26. God has.

  27. This was a highly calculated and aimed incarnation.

  28. God has a mission in entering his creation.

  29. Here it is.

  30. Here's why God came.

  31. God became a man so that man can know God.

  32. God became a man so that man can know God.

  33. The word became flesh so that you and I could truly know who God is.

  34. And by knowing God receive eternal life.

  35. God became a man so that man can know God.

  36. So that's the short answer.

  37. Now we get to explore that together from John chapter 1 this morning.

    John 1 chapter mention

  38. If you haven't opened a Bible yet I'd invite you there.

  39. If the black hardcover ESV is in the pews.

  40. You can find it I think on 1052.

  41. Is the page number?

  42. We'll be looking at what David just read for us.

  43. We're going to proceed by looking at three aspects this morning of this mission of Jesus.

  44. Three aspects.

  45. The backdrop.

  46. The essence.

  47. And the climax.

  48. First the backdrop.

  49. Before we get too far into this mission.

  50. We need to see what John is doing.

  51. He's setting the stage for us in chapter 1 of his gospel.

  52. And he's making at least two.

  53. There's more we could say.

  54. But two that I want to focus on.

  55. Two humongous truth claims.

  56. Two audacious, bold, emphatic claims.

  57. That set everything else in motion from here.

  58. The first is that there's a hero.

  59. He's introduced right in the first verse.

  60. And Billy talked about who this person was last week.

  61. The word.

  62. But then the second truth claim is there's a problem.

  63. There's a really, really, really big, fundamental, universal human problem.

  64. So John identifies who the hero is.

  65. And he identifies the problem that the hero has come to solve.

  66. This hero, right from the beginning of John's gospel, we see all kinds of amazing things.

  67. He's in the beginning.

  68. He's in the beginning with God.

  69. Because he is God.

  70. Everything that was created was created through the word.

  71. Through this hero of our story.

  72. And he has this intimate and unique and personal loving relationship with the father.

  73. Forever.

  74. This word in verse 4 we see has life in himself.

  75. He doesn't need anybody to give him life because he himself possesses life.

  76. Self-sustaining existence forever and ever and ever.

  77. And we see Jesus making these claims throughout the book.

  78. I am the bread of life, he says.

  79. I am the resurrection and the life.

  80. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  81. John chapter 14 verse 6.

    John 14:6

  82. But not just what the word was like then, but verse 14.

  83. He became flesh.

  84. And has dwelt among us.

  85. The word comes down.

  86. He enters into the creation that he created.

  87. And not just comes down, he was sent.

  88. Purposely by the father.

  89. So we're in the season of Advent.

  90. Advent.

  91. This time when we reflect on the baby in the manger.

  92. That we reflect on the word made flesh.

  93. And we do this year after year after year.

  94. And if you've been in church a while, you know.

  95. Come December, you can guarantee a couple things.

  96. Christmas music on the radio.

  97. And in church, you're going to learn about the baby in the manger.

  98. So how do we approach this season year after year after year?

  99. And have it be fresh.

  100. How can we keep this from being just the thing that we do this time of year?

  101. Because there's something so beautiful and wonderful that year by year,

  102. we have this opportunity to remember this in a fresh and wonderful and exciting way.

  103. So let me just offer a suggestion about how each of us can do this.

  104. I'm stealing an answer from our life group on Thursday night.

  105. Because we were talking about something different.

  106. But the help that I received is, I want to pass it on in this same regard.

  107. We talked about slowing down.

  108. We talked about when we're dealing with discouragement or just difficulties in life,

  109. that one of the ways that we can kind of snap ourselves out of it is by just slowing down.

  110. Kind of putting the phone on silent, stepping away from life,

  111. you know, maybe cutting a thing or two out of the calendar and just slowing down.

  112. I think in this season of Advent, that's exactly what each of us need to do

  113. in order to have this season fresh and exciting and wonderful.

  114. Let me just encourage all of us this morning to do that.

  115. Take some time where you leave your phone in a drawer

  116. and maybe instead of going through the drive-thru of Starbucks,

  117. you go inside and you find a place to sit and just open to John 1.

  118. And just pray.

  119. All you need to do is pray for the Holy Spirit to help you see how wonderful and good Jesus is.

  120. There is, I cannot remember a single time when I prayed that, that God didn't answer that prayer.

  121. Because He wants us to know His Son.

  122. He wants us to know Jesus in this season of Advent.

  123. And marvel anew at the baby in the manger, who is Emmanuel, who is the Savior of the world.

  124. So that's the hero.

  125. That's the person that John is introducing us to.

  126. But the other part of the backdrop that I want to make sure we see

  127. is that John introduces this fundamental and universal human problem.

  128. No one's exempt from this problem.

  129. All of us are facing this problem.

  130. And John's way of putting it is, we do not know God.

  131. We don't know who He is.

  132. And John just kind of lays this on over and over and over again.

  133. If you look at chapter 1, look in verse 5.

  134. John talks about darkness.

  135. And he doesn't just mean, oh, we need a light switch to kind of see where we're going in the dark.

  136. But he introduces darkness as the spiritual reality, this evil that's against the purposes of God.

  137. And Jesus, being the light, shines into that.

  138. And the darkness does not overcome the true light.

  139. There's a problem.

  140. We're blind.

  141. We're in the dark.

  142. We don't know God.

  143. We can't understand who He is.

  144. On in verse 10, John continues.

  145. He says that this Word created the world.

  146. And He was in the world.

  147. And the world didn't know Him.

  148. It says that Jesus came and kind of knocked the world upside its head.

  149. And the world didn't know Him.

  150. And not just that in verse 11, we see that He came to His own people.

  151. And His own people.

  152. Those who most clearly should have understood who He was and why He was coming,

  153. they did not receive Him.

  154. And John's raising all of this to show the problem.

  155. He keeps going.

  156. In verse 13, he says that flesh and blood, human will, have no help in becoming children of God.

  157. So, contrary to popular opinion, we don't start out God's children and then just kind of get to heaven

  158. simply because we're born into this world.

  159. In fact, we have no ability to become God's children, John says in verse 13.

  160. And this whole thing climaxes in verse 18 where John says,

  161. no one has ever seen God.

  162. In one sense, he just means God's invisible.

  163. He's spirit.

  164. We can't see Him.

  165. But we see at the end of that verse that there is one, the only God who is at the Father's side,

  166. who has made Him known.

  167. So, it's not just simply that God's invisible.

  168. He's not known.

  169. He's not comprehended.

  170. He's not understood.

  171. And this, according to John, is the fundamental human problem.

  172. We don't know God.

  173. This plays out over and over again in John's Gospel.

  174. We see a man in chapter 3 named Nicodemus, who's one of the religious leaders of Israel,

  175. come to Jesus at night.

  176. Jesus says, unless you're born again, you can't see the kingdom of God.

  177. In chapter 14, Jesus says, nobody comes to the Father except through me.

  178. He goes on to repeatedly explain that the reason why people reject Him is that they don't know the Father.

  179. They don't know God, so they reject Jesus.

  180. Over and over in John's Gospel, we see this.

  181. One of the clearest places is in chapter 16, verse 2, where Jesus says,

  182. hey, a time's coming.

  183. He's talking to His disciples the week before He dies, and He says,

  184. the time's coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.

  185. And they'll do these things because they have not known the Father nor Me.

  186. This adds flavor to our problem, doesn't it?

  187. There's something not just that God has to come,

  188. but there's something preventing us from understanding who He is.

  189. This light that comes into the world, this Word made flesh, is offensive.

  190. That's why His own people don't just not receive Him, they crucify Him.

  191. Because He's so offensive to them.

  192. And yet, John says, the problem is we don't know God.

  193. And He comes, and we don't know Him, and we reject Him.

  194. Over and over again, that's the problem that John presents.

  195. Elsewhere in our Bibles, we might see it as talking about, like in Paul,

  196. that we're dead in trespasses and sins.

  197. There's this sin problem that we have.

  198. I'm not denying any of that, but the way John couches it and explores it

  199. is through this relationship.

  200. It's broken, it's non-existent, we don't know God.

  201. That's why we're in the mess we're in.

  202. Well, you can probably guess what Jesus' mission is then, right?

  203. I mean, this is, I feel like I don't even have to say it,

  204. but I want to, just so we're all on the same page, right?

  205. The essence of Jesus' mission, this is point two,

  206. the essence of Jesus' mission is so that man can know God.

  207. That's why Jesus came, to make God known.

  208. To reveal the Father.

  209. And to mend what is broken by sin.

  210. The baby in a manger is making the invisible visible.

  211. The unknown, known.

  212. The unknowable, knowable.

  213. Jesus' mission is to solve our greatest problem.

  214. We do not know God.

  215. But Jesus makes him known.

  216. In the prologue of John that we're looking at,

  217. chapter 1, 1 to 18, John says it in a few different ways.

  218. One, in verse 9, he says that the true light

  219. that enlightens everyone,

  220. that gives light to everyone,

  221. is coming, right?

  222. Jesus is illuminating the spiritual realities

  223. about who God is

  224. and about the condition of our own lives and hearts

  225. apart from him.

  226. In verse 12, it says that Jesus alone,

  227. not flesh and blood,

  228. not the will of man,

  229. but Jesus alone gives the right

  230. to become children of God.

  231. So apart from Jesus,

  232. we're not children of God, it says.

  233. Jesus.

  234. And then in verse 18 again,

  235. it's that Jesus makes God known.

  236. Jesus makes God known.

  237. And John is very clear.

  238. Jesus isn't one of many people

  239. who makes God known.

  240. He's not one of many ways to know God,

  241. but he is the way to know God.

  242. And apart from him,

  243. we cannot know God.

  244. This is one of the major reasons

  245. why John records these seven statements of Jesus

  246. about who he is.

  247. Jesus, over and over through John's gospel,

  248. one of his main ways of describing his mission is,

  249. this is who I am.

  250. These are exclusive claims.

  251. Jesus saying,

  252. I am the only way to come to a knowledge of

  253. and enter into a relationship with God.

  254. I'm the bread of life.

  255. I'm the light of the world.

  256. I am the door for the sheep.

  257. I am the good shepherd.

  258. I am the resurrection and the life.

  259. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  260. I am the true vine.

  261. And as a bonus,

  262. in chapter 8,

  263. before Abraham was,

  264. I am.

  265. And these statements of Jesus

  266. come with this call

  267. to receive him as he is

  268. and as he claims to be.

  269. to believe that Jesus,

  270. when he makes the claim

  271. that he is the only way to know God,

  272. to say,

  273. I believe that

  274. and I want to know everything I can about Jesus

  275. because to know Jesus

  276. is to know God

  277. because Jesus is God.

  278. He alone can make God known.

  279. And along with this call

  280. to respond in that way,

  281. to put our faith and our trust in Jesus,

  282. to believe in him for eternal life,

  283. is this accompanying promise

  284. that all who believe

  285. will not perish

  286. but have everlasting life.

  287. We see it played out again

  288. in these same statements.

  289. If you eat the bread of life,

  290. you will not die.

  291. If you follow the light of the world,

  292. you will have the light of life.

  293. If you enter by the door,

  294. you will be saved

  295. and find pasture

  296. because the good shepherd

  297. lays down his life

  298. for the sheep,

  299. for their lives.

  300. If you believe the resurrection

  301. and the life,

  302. you will never die.

  303. He is the way,

  304. the truth,

  305. and the life

  306. and if you come to him,

  307. you will come to the Father.

  308. And in chapter 15,

  309. he says,

  310. I'm the true vine.

  311. If you abide in me

  312. and I in you,

  313. you will have life

  314. for apart from me,

  315. you can do nothing.

  316. Jesus is the only one

  317. who can make God known

  318. because he is God

  319. and he has come in human flesh

  320. to make God known.

  321. That's his mission.

  322. That's his purpose

  323. in taking on flesh.

  324. All other people

  325. and religions

  326. and everyone else

  327. who claims that they have

  328. another way to know God,

  329. they are either thieves

  330. or liars.

  331. Only Jesus

  332. makes God known.

  333. John says that, right?

  334. No one has ever seen God.

  335. No one.

  336. But the only God

  337. who is at the Father's side,

  338. he has made him known.

  339. You can know God

  340. through Jesus.

  341. That's the claim of John.

  342. It's the claim of this book

  343. called the Bible.

  344. The Word became flesh.

  345. God became a man

  346. so that man can know God.

  347. So church,

  348. let's keep delighting

  349. in this truth,

  350. this Advent season.

  351. We can truly know

  352. and understand

  353. and be in relationship

  354. with God

  355. because Jesus

  356. has made him known.

  357. But we know

  358. the story doesn't end there

  359. with his birth.

  360. Though the incarnation

  361. of God,

  362. the Word becoming flesh,

  363. was certainly costly,

  364. certainly amazing

  365. and wonderful

  366. and a truth

  367. that we need to declare

  368. and celebrate,

  369. it was only a piece

  370. of his mission.

  371. We must always remember

  372. where Jesus is going.

  373. Where his mission

  374. climaxes.

  375. Jesus' mission

  376. to make God known

  377. climaxes at the cross.

  378. when the Son of God

  379. was crucified

  380. in the place of sinners.

  381. This seems like

  382. such a bizarre statement

  383. on the surface.

  384. If you think about it.

  385. How in the world

  386. can God's Savior

  387. be killed

  388. on a cross?

  389. how does that

  390. save anybody?

  391. How can a crucified man

  392. be the Messiah,

  393. the Savior of the world?

  394. But John's been preparing us

  395. for this all along.

  396. That he's shown

  397. so many examples

  398. in this gospel

  399. of people

  400. who just misunderstand Jesus.

  401. That we should get

  402. to this point

  403. where the full revelation

  404. of God

  405. at the cross

  406. comes into full view

  407. in the gospel

  408. and we should go

  409. I don't need to be

  410. I don't need to misunderstand.

  411. I can know

  412. that this is truly

  413. who God is.

  414. Unlike Nicodemus

  415. who sits there

  416. scratching his head

  417. saying

  418. how can I be

  419. how can I crawl back

  420. into my mom's womb

  421. and be born again?

  422. Or the Samaritan woman

  423. at the well

  424. saying sir

  425. how can you give me

  426. this water of life

  427. you don't even have a bucket

  428. to drop into the well?

  429. Crowds of disciples

  430. hearing Jesus say

  431. I'm the bread of life

  432. saying

  433. how can this man

  434. give us his flesh to eat?

  435. Right?

  436. All these people

  437. over and over

  438. who misunderstand God.

  439. And Paul says

  440. that the word of the cross

  441. is folly

  442. to those who are perishing.

  443. Right?

  444. How does this make sense?

  445. That God would die?

  446. And yet that's exactly

  447. what happens.

  448. And it's this very claim

  449. in chapter 8 verse 28

  450. that Jesus highlights

  451. and points out

  452. for his disciples.

  453. And for those listening

  454. who will end up

  455. crucifying him

  456. he says this

  457. when you have lifted up

  458. the son of man

  459. so in that same way

  460. he's talking about himself

  461. and he's talking about the cross

  462. when you have lifted up

  463. the son of man

  464. when you've hung me

  465. on the cross

  466. then you will know

  467. that I am

  468. and that I do nothing

  469. on my own authority

  470. but speak just as

  471. the father taught me.

  472. The cross

  473. validates

  474. everything that Jesus

  475. said about himself

  476. and if we reduce that down

  477. the cross

  478. is the place

  479. and the conclusion

  480. that Jesus makes God known.

  481. as Nicodemus

  482. scratches his head

  483. Jesus tells him

  484. truly truly

  485. I say to you

  486. it was necessary

  487. that the son of man

  488. be lifted up

  489. that whoever believes in him

  490. may have eternal life.

  491. It's because the problem

  492. goes so deep

  493. friends.

  494. see the picture

  495. that John paints

  496. is not

  497. of these

  498. really God-fearing

  499. individuals

  500. kind of just sitting

  501. going oh

  502. if God would just

  503. show up

  504. and reveal himself

  505. we'd love to follow him.

  506. History continues

  507. to repeat itself

  508. that God sends

  509. messengers

  510. and says

  511. this is what I'm like.

  512. People kill

  513. his prophets

  514. they crucify his son

  515. and they continue

  516. to martyr his bride.

  517. Because the problem

  518. goes so deep

  519. and yet

  520. Jesus is the only way

  521. that we can know God.

  522. In an intimate

  523. gathering of disciples

  524. chapter 14

  525. one of them

  526. Philip says

  527. kind of please

  528. he pleads with Jesus

  529. he says

  530. just show us the Father

  531. and it's going to be

  532. enough for us.

  533. And Jesus says

  534. Philip

  535. have I been with you

  536. so long?

  537. If you've seen me

  538. you've seen the Father.

  539. Do you not believe

  540. that I am in the Father

  541. and the Father

  542. is in me?

  543. The Son of Man

  544. must be lifted up

  545. to divine necessity

  546. to crucify Jesus.

  547. To cast out

  548. the ruler

  549. of this world

  550. to defeat

  551. the problem

  552. of evil

  553. and sin

  554. and death

  555. put all people

  556. on notice.

  557. Believe

  558. in God's Messiah

  559. or perish

  560. in your sins.

  561. To showcase

  562. God's righteousness

  563. in his holy

  564. hatred

  565. for sin.

  566. And to teach

  567. sinners

  568. how far

  569. reaching

  570. his love

  571. is.

  572. For God

  573. so loved

  574. the world

  575. that he gave

  576. his only Son

  577. that whoever

  578. believes in him

  579. would not perish

  580. but have

  581. everlasting life.

  582. That's the mission

  583. of Jesus

  584. isn't it?

  585. To secure

  586. eternal life

  587. for all who believe.

  588. And what is

  589. this eternal life?

  590. eternal life?

  591. John 17

    John 17:3

  592. verse 3

  593. And this is

  594. eternal life

  595. that they know

  596. you

  597. the only

  598. true God

  599. and Jesus

  600. Christ

  601. whom you have

  602. sent.

  603. Eternal life

  604. is knowing God.

  605. You see how

  606. this all

  607. connects?

  608. Jesus' mission

  609. he came

  610. to make God

  611. known.

  612. Knowing God

  613. is eternal

  614. life.

  615. God

  616. became a man

  617. and died

  618. on a cross

  619. so that man

  620. could know God

  621. and find

  622. eternal life.

  623. All who believe

  624. in this

  625. will not perish

  626. in their sin

  627. but have eternal

  628. life.

  629. They will know

  630. the one true

  631. God

  632. because they

  633. know Jesus

  634. Christ

  635. the one

  636. God

  637. sent.

  638. Jesus says

  639. I and the

  640. Father

  641. am one.

  642. I'm in the

  643. Father

  644. the Father

  645. is in me

  646. if you've

  647. seen me

  648. you've seen

  649. the Father.

  650. Jesus alone

  651. makes God

  652. known

  653. because Jesus

  654. alone is God

  655. and he's come

  656. to make

  657. God known.

  658. That's his

  659. mission.

  660. That's why

  661. he came.

  662. So how do we

  663. respond?

  664. I just want to

  665. offer two ways

  666. for us to

  667. respond to

  668. this.

  669. First way

  670. is to

  671. celebrate

  672. him.

  673. Celebrate

  674. this unique

  675. person

  676. who alone

  677. is able to

  678. offer eternal

  679. life.

  680. Who alone

  681. is able to

  682. help us

  683. know God

  684. truly.

  685. So we

  686. worship and

  687. adore him

  688. this season

  689. of Advent

  690. and every

  691. season.

  692. I recognize

  693. in that

  694. it requires

  695. different

  696. strategies

  697. and procedures

  698. for different

  699. folks in the

  700. room.

  701. Right?

  702. If you're in

  703. the room

  704. today and

  705. you don't

  706. know Jesus

  707. you can't

  708. celebrate him

  709. until you

  710. come to

  711. him and

  712. receive his

  713. offer of

  714. eternal life

  715. and forgiveness

  716. of your

  717. sins.

  718. He offers

  719. this freely.

  720. It's why he

  721. came as a

  722. mission that

  723. he had from

  724. the beginning.

  725. But you

  726. must come to

  727. him and

  728. believe in

  729. him.

  730. He's the

  731. only way you

  732. can know

  733. God.

  734. And any

  735. other way

  736. that you're

  737. trying to

  738. know God

  739. will fail.

  740. No one's

  741. seen God.

  742. The only

  743. God at the

  744. Father's side

  745. has made

  746. him known.

  747. But then

  748. for the rest

  749. of us to

  750. celebrate Jesus

  751. means we've

  752. got to get

  753. him before

  754. our face.

  755. We've got to

  756. understand who

  757. he is and

  758. we've got to

  759. get him

  760. before our

  761. eyes.

  762. The way

  763. this has been

  764. looking for

  765. me this

  766. week, I

  767. have this

  768. fantastic

  769. ability to

  770. take all of

  771. my problems

  772. and put them

  773. under a

  774. microscope and

  775. magnify them

  776. and just stare

  777. through the lens

  778. of this microscope

  779. and just stare

  780. at my problems.

  781. Oh, the problem

  782. is so terrible.

  783. I'm guessing

  784. some of you

  785. can relate to

  786. this.

  787. But that's

  788. never going to

  789. get me to

  790. celebrate Jesus

  791. today or any

  792. day, is it?

  793. I've got to

  794. get my eye

  795. from squinting

  796. into this

  797. little teeny

  798. microscopic

  799. device and

  800. step back and

  801. lift my gaze

  802. up and see

  803. this delightful,

  804. glorious,

  805. wonderful Savior

  806. who dwarfs

  807. every problem

  808. I have.

  809. That's the

  810. fight of faith

  811. I'm engaged

  812. in to celebrate

  813. him now.

  814. So that's

  815. the first

  816. response,

  817. celebrate him.

  818. The second

  819. way that we

  820. respond to

  821. this mission

  822. of Jesus

  823. is to join

  824. him.

  825. After Jesus

  826. is resurrected

  827. in chapter 20

  828. verse 21,

  829. he says this

  830. to his

  831. disciples,

  832. As the

  833. Father has

  834. sent me,

  835. even so I

  836. am sending

  837. you.

  838. See, the

  839. mission of

  840. Jesus doesn't

  841. stop when

  842. Jesus goes

  843. up to

  844. heaven.

  845. Certainly

  846. he has

  847. died and

  848. been raised

  849. to offer

  850. eternal life

  851. and salvation

  852. and his

  853. mission continues

  854. through his

  855. people.

  856. To gather

  857. his sheep,

  858. those who

  859. will hear

  860. his voice

  861. and respond

  862. to him

  863. and come

  864. in and find

  865. pasture in

  866. life.

  867. That mission

  868. to continue

  869. uniting a

  870. people in

  871. his name

  872. for his

  873. glory.

  874. He sent

  875. us into

  876. this time,

  877. to this

  878. place,

  879. for his

  880. glory,

  881. to be on

  882. mission with

  883. him.

  884. The season

  885. of Advent,

  886. when we

  887. ponder the

  888. baby in the

  889. manger,

  890. is such a

  891. good time

  892. to either

  893. for the

  894. first time

  895. kindle,

  896. or for

  897. the 50th

  898. time,

  899. rekindle

  900. joining

  901. Jesus on

  902. this

  903. mission.

  904. Chapter

  905. 1,

  906. verse 14

  907. doesn't

  908. say,

  909. the word

  910. became

  911. flesh and

  912. dwelt

  913. nearby us.

  914. The word

  915. became flesh

  916. and dwelt

  917. among us.

  918. Let us

  919. be like

  920. that too.

  921. Though we

  922. acknowledge that

  923. mission is

  924. hard, it

  925. can be

  926. messy and

  927. scary.

  928. I was just

  929. talking about

  930. it before

  931. service.

  932. There was a

  933. way we were

  934. trying to

  935. help somebody

  936. and it

  937. didn't work

  938. out so

  939. well.

  940. But it

  941. requires

  942. proximity, it

  943. requires risk

  944. taking, that

  945. face-to-face

  946. relationship that

  947. Jesus makes

  948. God known

  949. because he's

  950. among the

  951. people.

  952. We have

  953. one such

  954. opportunity

  955. coming up on

  956. Christmas Eve

  957. that Mike

  958. announced earlier.

  959. We're going to

  960. gather in this

  961. building as a

  962. church and

  963. we're going to

  964. prepare food and

  965. we're going to

  966. feed a

  967. community of

  968. anybody who

  969. wants to

  970. come.

  971. But more than

  972. that, we want

  973. to join together

  974. to be God's

  975. sent ones who

  976. are on mission

  977. to say, Jesus

  978. is the only way

  979. to God.

  980. He's the only

  981. way you can

  982. know him.

  983. And if you

  984. know him, then

  985. you truly do

  986. know God and

  987. you have eternal

  988. life in him.

  989. Let's not just

  990. aim all of our

  991. energy at that

  992. one event and

  993. that one

  994. time, right?

  995. Let's commit

  996. as a church,

  997. wherever we're

  998. at, whether

  999. we've been

  1000. doing this and

  1001. you're like,

  1002. okay, here we

  1003. go again, or

  1004. you need this

  1005. encouragement and

  1006. this push.

  1007. Let's continue

  1008. joining Jesus in

  1009. this season and

  1010. every single

  1011. season.

  1012. Joining his

  1013. mission to

  1014. make God

  1015. known by

  1016. making Jesus

  1017. known.

  1018. Declaring to

  1019. our friends,

  1020. our neighbors,

  1021. our family,

  1022. our coworkers,

  1023. this glorious

  1024. news that God

  1025. became a man so

  1026. that man can

  1027. know God.

  1028. Let's pray.

  1029. Father God, I

  1030. just thank and

  1031. praise you for

  1032. your word.

  1033. Spirit, would

  1034. you help us

  1035. grasp this

  1036. incredible news

  1037. that Jesus

  1038. reveals the

  1039. Father because

  1040. the Father is in

  1041. Jesus and

  1042. Jesus is in the

  1043. Father.

  1044. Help us to

  1045. celebrate our

  1046. Lord and Savior

  1047. this Advent

  1048. season and help

  1049. us to join him

  1050. in this mission.

  1051. God, accomplish

  1052. much through our

  1053. efforts and be

  1054. glorified through

  1055. our celebration.

  1056. I give you all

  1057. the thanks, all

  1058. the praise, all

  1059. the glory, praying

  1060. only through

  1061. Jesus, our

  1062. Lord, our

  1063. God.

  1064. Amen.
