  1. I've come up with a new TV show.

  2. Yeah.

  3. It's called Soul Care Pastor.

  4. Soul Care Pastor.

  5. And what is basically is these episodes of a guy named Pastor John

  6. who is treating various kinds of soul sickness.

  7. And this show kicks off in Christmastime.

  8. And the first episode is, Tis the Season.

  9. Pastor John gets a call from a frantic wife.

  10. Her name is Lisa.

  11. Something's wrong with my husband, Steve.

  12. Will you help?

  13. Pastor John says, I'll be right there.

  14. Because Soul Care pastors make house calls.

  15. Pastor John shows up.

  16. Knock, knock, knock.

  17. Where's Steve?

  18. Lisa, he's in his man cave.

  19. And so Pastor John starts walking down the stairs to the basement man cave where he'll find Steve.

  20. And the first thing he sees is Steve's hands in his easy chair facing a screen.

  21. And he knows right away, based upon his right hand, what's going on.

  22. He's got remote hand.

  23. It's a vice-like grip on a remote control.

  24. It comes from excessive binging.

  25. Pastor John looks back and he says to Lisa, Lisa, I think we've got a case of indoxia.

  26. That's right.

  27. What?

  28. What's that?

  29. Lisa asks.

  30. Pastor John says, well, you've heard of insomnia, chronic not sleeping.

  31. Indoxia is chronic not glorifying God.

  32. Because on a side note, doxa is the Greek word for glory as in doxology.

  33. Praise God for a moon.

  34. So this guy looks like he's got indoxia.

  35. Pastor John, being the seasoned pastor he is, he asks this question.

  36. Lisa, who's been buying all the Christmas gifts for your family?

  37. Lisa says, well, Steve has been.

  38. Can I see his wallet?

  39. And as soon as Pastor John touches his wallet, it is ice cold.

  40. Because his credit cards, they've got this thing called greedy burn.

  41. It's like freezer burn.

  42. It desensitizes your spiritual sensitivities.

  43. It's a kind of materialism.

  44. Run amok.

  45. And it results in indoxia.

  46. Remote hand.

  47. Greedy burn.

  48. Pastor John says to Lisa, Lisa, I just need you to watch.

  49. I need to watch Steve's eyes as I read this scripture from Isaiah 9, 6 and 7.

  50. Pastor John pulls out his Bible and into Steve's ear he says,

  51. To us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

  52. And his name shall be called.

  53. What's he doing, Lisa?

  54. He's rolling his eyes.

  55. Whatever.

  56. Pastor John says, wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace.

  57. What's he doing, Lisa?

  58. He's rolling his eyes.

  59. Of the increase of his government and of peace.

  60. There will be no end.

  61. What's he doing?

  62. He's rolling his eyes.

  63. Pastor John, what are you going to do?

  64. I need 100 cc's of Jesus awesomeness stat.

  65. We need an IV drip of John chapter 1, verses 14 through 18.

    John 1:14–18

  66. We're going to let some truth about Jesus get into this man's soul.

  67. So he goes from endoxia to doxology.

  68. To give him praise and glory to Jesus.

  69. When you see the glory of the one and only Jesus, the only way to respond is to believe and marvel.

  70. When you see the glory of the one and only Jesus, the only response is to believe and to marvel.

  71. And so this morning, I want to help you experience John chapter 1, verses 14 through 18 as an IV drip for your soul.

    John 1:14–18

  72. To give you life.

  73. To make your heart cry out, show me your glory.

  74. So children, if you're in the room and you've got one of these bulletins, here's what I want you to do.

  75. You go to the back side of your bulletin, and I want you to write five things down on the left margin.

  76. I want you to write this.

  77. His presence.

  78. And then I want you to write this.

  79. What is the next one?

  80. His glory.

  81. And then His person.

  82. And then His grace.

  83. And the last one is His revelation.

  84. We're going to look at five reasons why you must believe in the one and only Jesus so that you can see, believe, and marvel.

  85. Because we all have endoxia.

  86. In some measure, right?

  87. Okay, let's look at the first reason why we must believe in the one and only Jesus Christ.

  88. It's in chapter 1, verse 14.

  89. We read this.

  90. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  91. Billy, a couple weeks ago, helped us understand what that word, Word, meant.

  92. God's authoritative announcement.

  93. Thus saith the Lord.

  94. The Greek word, underword, is the word logos.

  95. And in addition to, if you had an Old Testament background and you're reading John chapter 1, you would know right away, okay?

    John 1 chapter mention

  96. This is thus saith the Lord who's going to take on flesh.

  97. But if you didn't have an Old Testament background, and let's just say you were a Greek,

  98. that word logos would actually mean something.

  99. It had a philosophical meaning.

  100. And it would put something like this.

  101. The logos is what explains all things.

  102. It's the explanation for all things.

  103. So a Greek would understand, with no Old Testament background,

  104. when he would read John writing,

  105. in the beginning was the logos,

  106. he would understand it or she would understand it as,

  107. in the beginning was the explanation for all things.

  108. And the explanation for all things was with God.

  109. And the explanation for all things was God.

  110. He, the explanation for all things, was in the beginning with God.

  111. John is making a huge claim.

  112. The explanation for all things is a person.

  113. So this word became flesh.

  114. When you read that word flesh,

  115. it's what theologians call the incarnation.

  116. Has anybody had carne asada before?

  117. Yeah, I see that hand.

  118. Carne asada, carne is Spanish for meat.

  119. And so it's a very crude way of describing kind of humanity.

  120. And that's John's point.

  121. John is saying the word in all of his glory

  122. became meat, human flesh,

  123. in all of our humanity,

  124. with the exception of the sinful nature.

  125. The word became flesh.

  126. And the next word is really important.

  127. And dwelt among us.

  128. It actually means to pitch a tent.

  129. To tabernacle.

  130. And if you are familiar with the Old Testament,

  131. you'll remember Exodus 25 or 33

  132. where God commands Moses to build him

  133. a fancy tent called a tabernacle.

  134. And then what Moses would do,

  135. he pitched this tent,

  136. and then God would come down in a pillar of cloud,

  137. and he would dwell with his people.

  138. John is intentionally riffing off that

  139. when he says the word became flesh

  140. and tabernacled among us.

  141. Because what he's saying about Jesus is this.

  142. He's better than a tent.

  143. He's better than God dwelling with us in a tent.

  144. He is God dwelling with us in a person.

  145. And so what we're seeing here is his presence.

  146. Why you should believe Jesus is,

  147. unlike anybody else,

  148. the one and only,

  149. is that he's the greater presence.

  150. He dwelled with us in his flesh.

  151. And he dwelt,

  152. he came in his flesh

  153. for a reason.

  154. So that we could have a relationship with God.

  155. But I want to just make one point

  156. before we move on.

  157. Did you know that Jesus is still incarnate?

  158. Right now?

  159. He's still in the flesh.

  160. It's not like he decarnated

  161. after his death and resurrection

  162. when he went up to the Father's right hand.

  163. Verse 18.

  164. He's in the flesh now.

  165. And so when he comes back,

  166. he's coming back in the flesh.

  167. And we'll see the risen, radiant,

  168. and reigning Christ

  169. face to face.

  170. So the first reason why you must believe

  171. in the one and only Jesus

  172. is his greater presence.

  173. He is the word become flesh.

  174. The second reason is his glory.

  175. And the word became flesh

  176. and dwelt among us

  177. and we have seen his glory.

  178. Glory is of the only son from the father,

  179. full of grace and truth.

  180. When John says,

  181. we beheld his glory,

  182. the we is him

  183. and the original disciples.

  184. We saw his glory.

  185. When he was ministering among us,

  186. we saw his glory.

  187. You might be wondering,

  188. what is glory?

  189. Well, glory is the visible

  190. or audible display

  191. display of God's majesty.

  192. It's what theologians called theophany.

  193. And so when we read John saying,

  194. we behold his glory,

  195. we beheld it,

  196. John wants that to trigger something

  197. in your mind.

  198. Exodus chapter 33, verse 18,

    Exodus 33:18

  199. where Moses says to God,

  200. please, please show me your glory.

  201. God dwelling in the tabernacle.

  202. Moses wants to behold his glory.

  203. He's like saying,

  204. show me your glory.

  205. And God responds,

  206. you can't handle my glory.

  207. Well, God says,

  208. I'm going to cause my goodness

  209. to pass before you

  210. and I'm going to announce

  211. my name before you.

  212. But in order to do that,

  213. you can't see me, Moses,

  214. because if you see me,

  215. any man that sees me will die.

  216. So you can't see me.

  217. But I'll tell you,

  218. I'll put you in a cleft of a rock,

  219. I'll tuck you in,

  220. and then I'll show you

  221. my backside glory.

  222. Well, you can't see my glory

  223. and it's full,

  224. otherwise you die.

  225. So here we have in John 1,

  226. we beheld his glory.

  227. We beheld his glory.

  228. In that Exodus 33 and 34 passage,

  229. it goes on.

  230. It goes on to say

  231. that God is gracious

  232. to whom he will be gracious.

  233. And then in verse 6 and 7

  234. is this glorious words

  235. where God goes before Moses

  236. and he says,

  237. the Lord,

  238. the Lord,

  239. merciful and gracious,

  240. slow to anger

  241. and abounding

  242. in steadfast love

  243. and faithfulness.

  244. Notice what John

  245. beholds in verse 14.

  246. We have seen his glory,

  247. glory as of the only son

  248. from the Father.

  249. That word only

  250. is a very special word.

  251. It means one of a kind,

  252. one and only.

  253. There's nothing,

  254. no one like him.

  255. Glory is of the only son

  256. from the Father.

  257. So,

  258. so John is saying,

  259. we beheld his glory

  260. and it's a unique glory

  261. to this one.

  262. And then he tells us

  263. what this glory is.

  264. He says,

  265. full of grace and truth.

  266. Here's how you need

  267. to interpret

  268. full of grace and truth.

  269. When you hear the word full,

  270. you need to think abounding.

  271. When you hear the word grace,

  272. you need to think

  273. steadfast love.

  274. When you hear the word truth,

  275. you need to think faithfulness.

  276. What Jesus,

  277. what John is claiming

  278. about Jesus

  279. is he is the ultimate

  280. incarnate theophany of God

  281. abounding in steadfast love

  282. and faithfulness.

  283. He is the greater glory

  284. to be beheld,

  285. to be seen,

  286. a glory full of grace and truth.

  287. You know the difference

  288. between Exodus 34

  289. and John 1 is?

  290. Exodus 34,

  291. God verbally announces

  292. who he is,

  293. abounding in steadfast love

  294. and faithfulness.

  295. And you get to see

  296. Moses' backside glory.

  297. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  298. John says,

  299. we beheld all of his glory

  300. and he was full of grace

  301. and truth.

  302. We saw it.

  303. We saw it.

  304. When we talk about

  305. God's steadfast love

  306. and faithfulness

  307. being full of grace

  308. and truth,

  309. we're talking about

  310. God's loving commitment

  311. to faithfully do

  312. what's good,

  313. what's best

  314. to his people.

  315. We're talking about

  316. God showing his love

  317. to you

  318. for you experiencing

  319. the life

  320. that comes

  321. from his love.

  322. I'm going to

  323. stick with this point

  324. a little longer

  325. so hold on with me.

  326. There is an emphasis

  327. all throughout

  328. the Gospel of John

  329. on beholding

  330. of seeing Jesus.

  331. Last week,

  332. Matt

  333. helped us

  334. understand

  335. the seven

  336. I am statements

  337. of Jesus

  338. with that added

  339. awesome one

  340. of before Abraham

  341. was I am.

  342. Well,

  343. John contains

  344. as well,

  345. he documents

  346. seven signs

  347. of Jesus Christ

  348. that display

  349. his glory

  350. so you can see

  351. his glory

  352. so that you can see

  353. his abounding

  354. steadfast love

  355. and faithfulness.

  356. Remember,

  357. he turns water

  358. into wine

  359. in John 2.

  360. He heals

  361. an official son

  362. at the end

  363. of chapter 4.

  364. He heals

  365. an invalid

  366. at the pool

  367. of Bethesda

  368. at the beginning

  369. of chapter 5.

  370. He feeds a multitude

  371. at the end

  372. of chapter 6

  373. or early

  374. in chapter 6.

  375. He walks

  376. on water

  377. at the middle

  378. of chapter 6.

  379. He heals

  380. a man born blind

  381. in chapter 9

  382. so that he can

  383. see.

  384. And then,

  385. remember in chapter 11,

  386. he waits

  387. to go

  388. to see

  389. Lazarus

  390. so that

  391. God would be glorified.

  392. And then he raises

  393. him from the dead.

  394. All for us

  395. to see.

  396. But the greatest

  397. sign of the glory

  398. of the one

  399. and only,

  400. full of grace

  401. and truth,

  402. takes place

  403. in chapter 19

  404. of John.

  405. Where Jesus

  406. up on a cross

  407. is displaying

  408. the abounding

  409. steadfast love

  410. and faithfulness

  411. of God

  412. when he says

  413. it is

  414. finished.

  415. The incarnate

  416. God

  417. dying

  418. in the place

  419. of sinners

  420. like you

  421. and me.

  422. It was a display

  423. of God's

  424. full grace

  425. and truth

  426. so that we

  427. could have a

  428. relationship

  429. with him.

  430. Experience life

  431. in him.

  432. His glory

  433. is a greater glory.

  434. glory.

  435. It's better

  436. than some

  437. audible

  438. announcement

  439. because

  440. when you

  441. open up

  442. the pages

  443. of the

  444. scriptures

  445. you can

  446. see Jesus

  447. with eyes

  448. of faith.

  449. It's a visible

  450. display.

  451. Do you remember

  452. at the beginning

  453. of this point

  454. I said

  455. John said

  456. we beheld

  457. his glory?

  458. Well,

  459. we can be

  460. a part

  461. of that we.

  462. We can

  463. behold

  464. the glory

  465. of Jesus

  466. to the

  467. one

  468. and only

  469. Christ.

  470. You just

  471. got to

  472. open up

  473. the Bible.

  474. You got to

  475. open up

  476. the gospels.

  477. You got to

  478. see him

  479. and believe

  480. in him

  481. and maybe

  482. as you're

  483. hearing this

  484. you feel

  485. the dripping

  486. of Jesus

  487. awesomeness

  488. in your soul

  489. and you're

  490. saying

  491. oh I want

  492. to see

  493. that more.

  494. I want

  495. to see

  496. him more.

  497. It's not

  498. too early

  499. to be thinking

  500. about reading

  501. your Bible

  502. going forward

  503. in the year

  504. 2020.

  505. Maybe you

  506. need to

  507. start

  508. in the

  509. gospel

  510. of John

  511. and you

  512. start every

  513. day by

  514. saying oh

  515. Lord Jesus

  516. show me

  517. your glory.

  518. That's the

  519. second reason

  520. why we

  521. believe in

  522. the one

  523. and only

  524. Jesus

  525. because if

  526. you see

  527. him,

  528. see his

  529. glory,

  530. the only

  531. response is

  532. to believe

  533. and to

  534. marvel.

  535. The third

  536. reason to

  537. believe in

  538. this one

  539. and only

  540. Jesus is

  541. his person

  542. and that's

  543. in verse

  544. 15.

  545. And you'll

  546. notice right

  547. away that

  548. it's

  549. parenthetical.

  550. There's

  551. parentheses

  552. around it.

  553. So here

  554. is John

  555. the apostle

  556. who's going

  557. to quote

  558. John the

  559. Baptist.

  560. And just

  561. as a side

  562. note,

  563. if you don't

  564. know already,

  565. John the

  566. Baptist was

  567. born six

  568. to eight

  569. months before

  570. Jesus.

  571. So in

  572. verse 15

  573. John writes

  574. of John

  575. the Baptist,

  576. John the

  577. Baptist bore

  578. witness about

  579. him and

  580. cried out,

  581. this was

  582. he of

  583. whom I

  584. said,

  585. he who

  586. comes after

  587. me ranks

  588. before me

  589. because he

  590. was before

  591. me.

  592. It sounds

  593. kind of like

  594. a riddle,

  595. doesn't it?

  596. The reason

  597. why John

  598. has this

  599. here is he's

  600. getting us

  601. ready for

  602. what John

  603. the Baptist

  604. is about

  605. to say in

  606. chapter 1

  607. verses 19

  608. through 28,

  609. behold the

  610. Lamb of God

  611. who's come to

  612. take away the

  613. sins of the

  614. world.

  615. And then he

  616. says,

  617. he who comes

  618. after me ranks

  619. before me

  620. because he

  621. was before

  622. me.

  623. What's all

  624. that about?

  625. Well when he

  626. says he who

  627. comes after

  628. me, John

  629. the Baptist

  630. is saying

  631. about Jesus,

  632. well he was

  633. born after

  634. me.

  635. He's got a

  636. later birthday

  637. than I do.

  638. And in that

  639. culture what it

  640. typically meant

  641. is if you were

  642. older you had

  643. a higher degree

  644. of honor and

  645. respect than

  646. someone who

  647. was younger.

  648. And then he

  649. says, he who

  650. comes after me

  651. ranks before

  652. me.

  653. So he totally

  654. flips that whole

  655. idea.

  656. And the

  657. idea there is

  658. this one who

  659. comes after

  660. me surpasses

  661. me.

  662. He's more

  663. important than

  664. me.

  665. And the reason

  666. why he's more

  667. important than

  668. me comes in

  669. the next

  670. little piece

  671. because he

  672. was before

  673. me.

  674. Do you

  675. understand what

  676. he's saying?

  677. This is a

  678. claim of

  679. deity.

  680. This is saying

  681. that this

  682. word became

  683. flesh and who

  684. dwelt among

  685. us.

  686. He is the

  687. eternal God.

  688. God.

  689. It's similar

  690. to what we

  691. read in

  692. John 8

  693. 58.

  694. Before Abraham

  695. was, I am.

  696. Jesus is

  697. claiming I

  698. existed before

  699. Abraham.

  700. The people who

  701. he said that

  702. to flipped.

  703. They couldn't

  704. believe what he

  705. was hearing.

  706. They picked up

  707. stones to

  708. throw at him.

  709. They were so

  710. mad.

  711. What this is

  712. the claim is

  713. his person is

  714. a greater

  715. person.

  716. God.

  717. He's the

  718. eternal God

  719. made flesh.

  720. And the way

  721. to respond to

  722. this is John

  723. the Baptist's

  724. cue from

  725. chapter 3

  726. verse 30

  727. where John

  728. says he

  729. must increase

  730. but I must

  731. decrease.

  732. In other

  733. words, if he's

  734. greater than

  735. John, he's

  736. also greater

  737. than you.

  738. He surpasses

  739. you.

  740. He's greater

  741. than any of

  742. us.

  743. He's the

  744. word, eternal

  745. word become

  746. flesh.

  747. The second

  748. person of

  749. the Trinity

  750. become human.

  751. That's the

  752. third reason to

  753. believe in the

  754. one and only

  755. Jesus, that he

  756. is one of a

  757. kind.

  758. It is his

  759. greater person.

  760. He's eternal.

  761. The fourth

  762. reason to believe

  763. in the one and

  764. only Jesus is

  765. in verses 16

  766. and 17.

  767. It's his

  768. grace.

  769. Now, I

  770. tried to

  771. already make

  772. a case

  773. saying that

  774. when John

  775. says that

  776. Jesus was

  777. full of

  778. grace and

  779. truth, he's

  780. riffing off of

  781. the Exodus

  782. 34 statement

  783. of God

  784. where God

  785. says, I'm

  786. abounding in

  787. steadfast love

  788. and faithfulness.

  789. So grace is

  790. John's way of

  791. referring to

  792. God's steadfast

  793. love.

  794. His undeserved,

  795. unmerited favor

  796. to people who

  797. don't deserve

  798. it.

  799. Now, in

  800. verse 16, we

  801. read this,

  802. for from his

  803. fullness we've

  804. all received.

  805. I'm going to

  806. come back to

  807. that word

  808. received in a

  809. second, but

  810. that word

  811. fullness, that

  812. abounding, he

  813. unpacks.

  814. It's grace upon

  815. grace.

  816. Do you see that

  817. in verse 16?

  818. This fullness is

  819. grace upon grace

  820. and when you

  821. read that, it

  822. sounds like

  823. that those who

  824. receive Christ's

  825. fullness receive

  826. measure upon

  827. measure of

  828. God's grace.

  829. It's like strata

  830. of grace building

  831. up on each

  832. other, but it's

  833. not quite that.

  834. I'm going to

  835. make a technical

  836. observation.

  837. You ready?

  838. That word

  839. upon in verse

  840. 16, grace upon

  841. grace, the most

  842. frequent and

  843. common use of

  844. the Greek word

  845. of that means

  846. grace instead

  847. of or in the

  848. place of.

  849. And so if you

  850. were to take it

  851. that way, here's

  852. how it would

  853. read.

  854. It would read

  855. something like

  856. this.

  857. For from him, his

  858. fullness we have

  859. all received, grace

  860. in place of grace,

  861. grace instead of

  862. grace, which

  863. sounds kind of

  864. odd, right?

  865. Until you look at

  866. verse 17.

  867. 17 explains what

  868. John is meaning.

  869. He says in verse

  870. 17, for the law

  871. was given through

  872. Moses, a kind of

  873. grace.

  874. Grace and truth

  875. came through Jesus

  876. Christ.

  877. There was a lesser

  878. grace, God's

  879. steadfast love,

  880. giving his people

  881. the law of Moses,

  882. which pointed to

  883. God, exposed sin,

  884. and anticipated

  885. Jesus.

  886. And then there

  887. was the greater

  888. grace that

  889. fulfilled it in

  890. the person of

  891. Jesus Christ, which

  892. gets to the how.

  893. Jesus taught in

  894. Matthew 5 that he

  895. came not to abolish

  896. the law of Moses,

  897. but to fulfill it.

  898. All that the law

  899. of Moses requires

  900. and anticipates is

  901. fulfilled in the

  902. person of Jesus

  903. Christ.

  904. He's the greater

  905. grace.

  906. And so, that's

  907. why we can say

  908. if we're in

  909. Christ, we're no

  910. longer under the

  911. law.

  912. Because Jesus

  913. fulfilled it all.

  914. In John 3, 16,

  915. we read this.

  916. For God so loved

  917. the world that he

  918. gave the law of

  919. Moses, that whoever

  920. obeys the law of

  921. Moses will receive

  922. eternal life.

  923. Right?

  924. Totally wrong.

  925. For God so loved

  926. the world that he

  927. gave his one and

  928. only greater grace

  929. son, that whoever

  930. believes in him

  931. shall not perish,

  932. but have eternal

  933. life.

  934. Which brings me to

  935. that word receive.

  936. For of his fullness

  937. we have all

  938. received.

  939. What does that

  940. mean?

  941. What kind of

  942. receiving are we

  943. talking about?

  944. Well, John already

  945. answered that question

  946. for us in verse 12.

  947. Would you look at

  948. verse 12 of

  949. chapter 1?

  950. John writes,

  951. but to all who did

  952. receive him,

  953. who believed in

  954. his name.

  955. To them he gave

  956. the right to become

  957. children of God.

  958. to receive the

  959. fullness of the

  960. one and only

  961. Jesus is to

  962. believe in

  963. him.

  964. To trust in

  965. him.

  966. He's the greater

  967. grace.

  968. He fulfills the

  969. law of Moses.

  970. And of his

  971. fullness we

  972. receive by

  973. believing.

  974. That's the

  975. fourth reason

  976. why we

  977. should believe

  978. in the one

  979. and only

  980. Jesus.

  981. He is the

  982. source of

  983. greater grace.

  984. The fifth

  985. reason why

  986. you must

  987. believe in

  988. the one

  989. and only

  990. Jesus

  991. is his

  992. revelation.

  993. In verse

  994. 18 we

  995. read,

  996. no one

  997. has ever

  998. seen God,

  999. the only

  1000. God who

  1001. is at

  1002. the Father's

  1003. side,

  1004. he has

  1005. made him

  1006. known.

  1007. We're

  1008. immediately in

  1009. verse 18

  1010. met with a

  1011. problem.

  1012. No one

  1013. has ever

  1014. seen God.

  1015. And you

  1016. may be

  1017. thinking,

  1018. well that's

  1019. right because

  1020. you can't

  1021. see God.

  1022. And to

  1023. a certain

  1024. degree you

  1025. would be

  1026. correct.

  1027. But remember

  1028. what Exodus

  1029. 33 20 says.

  1030. You cannot

  1031. see my

  1032. face for

  1033. man cannot

  1034. see my

  1035. face and

  1036. live.

  1037. The real

  1038. problem is

  1039. we can't

  1040. see God

  1041. lest we

  1042. die because

  1043. he's holy

  1044. and we're

  1045. not.

  1046. Remember

  1047. Moses only

  1048. saw the

  1049. backside glory

  1050. of God in

  1051. Exodus 33

  1052. 34.

  1053. The problem

  1054. is if we

  1055. see God

  1056. we die.

  1057. And the

  1058. solution is

  1059. here in

  1060. verse 18.

  1061. The only

  1062. God.

  1063. God.

  1064. It's the

  1065. same only

  1066. from verse

  1067. 14.

  1068. The one

  1069. and only.

  1070. The one

  1071. of a kind

  1072. God.

  1073. The incarnate

  1074. God.

  1075. Jesus Christ

  1076. verse 17.

  1077. He has

  1078. made him

  1079. known.

  1080. It's a

  1081. fancy word.

  1082. Biblical

  1083. scholars throw

  1084. around the

  1085. word exegesis.

  1086. It's a way

  1087. of studying

  1088. the Bible.

  1089. It's the

  1090. making known

  1091. of what the

  1092. Bible says.

  1093. You do your

  1094. exegetical

  1095. work.

  1096. And that's

  1097. the word we

  1098. have here.

  1099. No one has

  1100. ever seen

  1101. God.

  1102. The only God

  1103. who is at

  1104. the Father's

  1105. side.

  1106. He has

  1107. exegeted

  1108. him.

  1109. He has

  1110. made him

  1111. known.

  1112. He has put

  1113. him on full

  1114. display.

  1115. time and

  1116. again in the

  1117. Gospel of

  1118. John.

  1119. Jesus says

  1120. something.

  1121. If you've

  1122. seen me,

  1123. you've seen

  1124. the Father.

  1125. Because I

  1126. put him on

  1127. display.

  1128. I am the

  1129. visible

  1130. theophany

  1131. of God.

  1132. It's where

  1133. John 1 has

  1134. been moving

  1135. all along.

  1136. This prologue

  1137. lands here.

  1138. The one

  1139. and only

  1140. God.

  1141. Fully

  1142. God.

  1143. Fully

  1144. man.

  1145. Jesus

  1146. Christ.

  1147. He has

  1148. revealed the

  1149. unseen God

  1150. whom if we

  1151. saw, we

  1152. would die.

  1153. But if we

  1154. see Jesus

  1155. with eyes of

  1156. faith, we

  1157. don't die, we

  1158. live.

  1159. He's one

  1160. of a kind.

  1161. He's the

  1162. one and only.

  1163. Our seeing

  1164. God in the

  1165. face of Jesus

  1166. Christ, when

  1167. accompanied by

  1168. faith, doesn't

  1169. result in our

  1170. death, but

  1171. results in

  1172. eternal life,

  1173. experiencing his

  1174. fullness of

  1175. grace and

  1176. truth, his

  1177. steadfast love

  1178. and faithfulness

  1179. towards us.

  1180. For God so

  1181. loved the

  1182. world that he

  1183. gave his one

  1184. and only son

  1185. that whoever

  1186. believes him

  1187. shall not

  1188. perish but

  1189. have eternal

  1190. life.

  1191. So what we've

  1192. learned here from

  1193. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  1194. 1 through 18,

  1195. is that the

  1196. logos, who is

  1197. Jesus Christ,

  1198. the word became

  1199. flesh, the one

  1200. and only, has

  1201. made known the

  1202. unseen God.

  1203. If you see him,

  1204. you will die.

  1205. And he's made

  1206. him known,

  1207. showing him his

  1208. glory, an

  1209. incarnate glory,

  1210. full of grace and

  1211. truth, that if we

  1212. receive, we live.

  1213. He came to reveal

  1214. the Father and to

  1215. reveal salvation in

  1216. him alone.

  1217. So why must you

  1218. believe in the one

  1219. and only Jesus

  1220. Christ?

  1221. Well, his presence

  1222. is a greater

  1223. presence.

  1224. His glory is a

  1225. greater glory.

  1226. His person is a

  1227. greater person.

  1228. His grace is a

  1229. greater grace.

  1230. And his revelation

  1231. is the greatest

  1232. revelation, ultimate

  1233. revelation of God

  1234. himself.

  1235. There's no greater.

  1236. So how do we

  1237. respond to this?

  1238. Well, let's say you

  1239. came into the

  1240. building this morning

1241. and you had a mild

  1242. or major case of

  1243. indoxia.

  1244. Chronic, not

  1245. glorifying God.

  1246. Here's how you

  1247. respond.

  1248. You don't need a

  1249. soul care pastor to

  1250. show up to your

  1251. house.

  1252. You need to see

  1253. Jesus in his glory.

  1254. You need to see

  1255. him.

1256. You need to open up

  1257. the pages of the

  1258. scriptures.

  1259. And you need to

  1260. call out to him,

  1261. show me your glory.

  1262. God is most

  1263. pleased to show you

  1264. his glory.

  1265. It's like the

  1266. IV of 100

  1267. CC's of Jesus

  1268. awesomeness starts

  1269. to drip into your

  1270. soul.

  1271. So you need to

  1272. see him.

  1273. But not just

  1274. see him,

  1275. you need to

  1276. believe in him.

  1277. You need to

  1278. receive his

  1279. fullness of

  1280. grace and truth.

  1281. You must

  1282. believe.

  1283. You must say

  1284. yes.

  1285. You must take

  1286. that step.

  1287. And if you're

  1288. in the room and

  1289. you've never put

  1290. your faith,

  1291. belief in Jesus

  1292. before, what a

  1293. day to do it.

  1294. Come to Jesus.

  1295. Say to Jesus, I

  1296. will receive your

  1297. full grace and

  1298. truth.

  1299. I'll receive it by

  1300. faith.

  1301. And you will

  1302. live.

  1303. See, believe, and

  1304. finally, marvel.

  1305. Marvel at him.

  1306. He is the one

  1307. and only God.

  1308. The one and only

  1309. from the Father,

  1310. full of grace,

  1311. the truth.

  1312. And when you

  1313. marvel, it

  1314. just, it just

  1315. crowds out any

  1316. indoxia in your

  1317. soul.

  1318. It moves you

  1319. from chronic

  1320. not glorifying to

  1321. God to eager

  1322. wanting to

  1323. glorify God.

  1324. God.

  1325. And that's not

  1326. just a good

  1327. place to be at

  1328. Christmas time.

  1329. That's a good

  1330. place to be for

  1331. the rest of your

  1332. life.

  1333. Jesus never gets

  1334. old.

  1335. And if you think

  1336. he does, it says

  1337. more about you

  1338. than him.

  1339. What this also

  1340. does, this

  1341. marveling at

  1342. him, not only

  1343. does it compel

  1344. worship and

  1345. glorying him in

  1346. our own

  1347. heart, it

  1348. compels us to

  1349. want others to

  1350. see, believe,

  1351. and marvel at

  1352. Jesus too.

  1353. It compels us to

1354. want to go tell it

  1355. on the mountain

  1356. that the word has

  1357. become flesh.

  1358. It compels us to

  1359. tell people,

  1360. Merry Christmas,

  1361. happy incarnation.

  1362. compels us to

  1363. want to sing

  1364. joy to the

  1365. world.

  1366. The word

  1367. has come.

  1368. When we see

  1369. Jesus for who

  1370. he is,

  1371. the only

  1372. response

  1373. pleasing to

  1374. Father is

  1375. to believe

  1376. and to marvel.

  1377. Let's pray.

  1378. Lord Jesus,

  1379. we thank you so

  1380. much for who

  1381. you are.

  1382. Spirit of God,

  1383. we know that

  1384. your ministry is

  1385. to glorify the

  1386. Son, so would

  1387. you exalt the

  1388. Son in our

  1389. lives?

  1390. Would you

  1391. help us to

  1392. not only see

  1393. Jesus, but to

  1394. believe in

  1395. him, and in

  1396. believing in

  1397. him, marvel at

  1398. him?

  1399. And God, we

  1400. ask that even

  1401. two days from

  1402. now, during

  1403. this Christmas

  1404. outreach, that

  1405. as a result of

  1406. our limited

  1407. efforts in

  1408. pointing others

  1409. to this one-of-a-kind

  1410. Jesus, God,

  1411. would you do a

  1412. work that only

  1413. you can do?

  1414. That others

  1415. would see him

  1416. and believe him

  1417. and marvel at

  1418. him?

  1419. God, we're

  1420. asking that you

  1421. would add to our

  1422. number over the

  1423. next year, and

  1424. at this time

  1425. next year, God,

  1426. we would be

  1427. singing with

  1428. more people who

  1429. marvel at the

  1430. Son.

  1431. We ask this in

  1432. Jesus' name.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.

  1446. Amen.

  1447. Amen.

  1448. Amen.

  1449. Amen.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.

  1452. Amen.

  1453. Amen.

  1454. Amen.

  1455. Amen.

  1456. Amen.
