  1. I have sort of a David Letterman top 10 list to start out.

  2. It's not quite 10 and it's not quite David Letterman because I'm not nearly as funny as him.

  3. But seven things that you won't hear in church.

  4. Number one, now that keeping all of God's commandments has become second nature,

  5. I'm planning to solve some real problems.

  6. Number two, I've stopped praying because I realized I don't need any help.

  7. Number three, I don't read the Bible anymore because I already know everything there is to know about God.

  8. Number four, since I've earned God's love for myself, I'm now working on helping others earn it too.

  9. Number five, my strength is sufficient for my salvation.

  10. Number six, grace is only for losers.

  11. Number seven, wisdom?

  12. That's why I've got this handy magic eight ball.

  13. It's a toy from my childhood for those who don't know.

  14. I say magic eight ball, should I go do this?

  15. And it says it is decidedly so and so on and so forth.

  16. So that's a list of things you won't hear in church.

  17. It's right to kind of chuckle and laugh because they sound so ridiculous.

  18. And yet, our sin problem goes so deep, our fleshly nature so pervades and oozes into every nook and cranny of our lives,

  19. that things that sound ridiculous on one hand actually show up in our lives.

  20. Not certainly in these brazen kind of arrogant statements that I listed, but more subtly.

  21. We operate in our own strength all the time.

  22. In fact, that was part of Billy's prayer of confession that we heard.

  23. We fail to carve out time for the Lord to seek His face and to have Him help us.

  24. Sometimes we act in haste in a situation that requires a lot of wisdom and waiting.

  25. On God.

  26. Sometimes we forget just how much help we need to combat our sin-sick condition.

  27. Sometimes life is so busy we don't open our Bibles because we don't have time,

  28. failing to remember that life is in knowing God.

  29. The bottom line is we need help.

  30. This is where the book of Galatians comes in handy.

  31. To kind of get us back into this book, we've taken three or four weeks off now to enjoy Advent together,

  32. but so to get us back into the book of Galatians,

  33. this is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to a mostly non-Jewish Christian church in Galatia.

  34. That's being written to folks who wouldn't necessarily have been following the commandments of God

  35. because they were Gentile, they were pagans,

  36. and they would have been living very different lives than the typical Jewish religious man or woman.

  37. And Paul writes because these Galatian Christians are in danger of abandoning their faith in Jesus

  38. for a cursed captivity under the Jewish law.

  39. See, a group of false teachers, we call them Judaizers,

  40. they've come in to this church and they've started giving the Galatians this message that says,

  41. your faith is incomplete until you begin keeping the Jewish commandments.

  42. All this faith in Jesus, it will be next to nothing until you obey the Old Testament law.

  43. And tragically, this church who's been set free by Jesus,

  44. the moment that they believe that His perfect life,

  45. His death for sinners and His glorious resurrection

  46. and now current ascension and rule and reign over all things,

  47. this church has believed this.

  48. They believe the good news.

  49. They're in danger of turning from it.

  50. Surrendering the freedom that Jesus alone provides

  51. in exchange for slavery.

  52. They're surrendering their salvation for condemnation.

  53. And Paul is urgently warning them.

  54. He's calling them back to faith alone in Jesus.

  55. Saying the law cannot save you.

  56. Only Jesus can through faith in Him alone.

  57. But if the law is not the guide into righteousness,

  58. if the law is not ushering the people of God into salvation,

  59. then who or what is?

  60. Well, Paul's answer in our text is,

  61. the Holy Spirit is the guide into righteousness

  62. and the one who is ushering us into salvation.

  63. It's the Holy Spirit alone who does this.

  64. So, in Galatians 5, 16-24, our text for this morning,

  65. God, through the Apostle Paul,

  66. issues a command to Christians,

  67. both the Galatian church and us today,

  68. and then gives us the reason why.

  69. So, a command and a reason,

  70. and essentially, if I could summarize it

  71. and boil it down to one sentence, it's this.

  72. Walk by the Spirit

  73. because you need Him.

  74. Walk by the Spirit because you need Him.

  75. We all need help, right?

  76. We're in agreement there.

  77. And Jesus has sent,

  78. not just sort of some book,

  79. of course the Bible is amazing,

  80. not just a list of do's and don'ts,

  81. but a helper, a person,

  82. to help us, the Holy Spirit.

  83. So, walk by the Spirit

  84. because you need His help.

  85. We're going to walk through this passage this morning

  86. by looking at three reasons

  87. why we must walk by the Spirit.

  88. Three reasons why

  89. we must walk by the Spirit.

  90. Reason number one,

  91. you need Him to defeat the flesh.

  92. You need the Spirit to defeat the flesh.

  93. This is what Paul gets at in verses 16 and 17.

  94. Right on the heels of making this command,

  95. walk by the Spirit

  96. and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

  97. Paul says in these verses

  98. that each and every Christian

  99. is engaged in a conflict.

  100. Now, he's not talking about

  101. that kind of cosmic conflict

  102. of God versus Satan

  103. and all the corresponding angels and demons.

  104. Not that conflict Paul has in mind here,

  105. but an inner conflict,

  106. a conflict inside each and every Christian.

  107. It begins the moment we trust in Jesus for salvation

  108. and it continues for our entire life

  109. until either we die

  110. or Jesus graciously returns.

  111. And it's because that at our salvation,

  112. the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us.

  113. The moment that happens,

  114. this conflict begins waging inside of us.

  115. But that also means

  116. that this conflict is not one

  117. that is just universally true

  118. of all human beings.

  119. This isn't like the cartoon

  120. where there's a devil on one shoulder

  121. and an angel on the other shoulder

  122. and every person is just kind of struggling

  123. through this.

  124. There is a sense that that's true,

  125. but that's not what Paul's getting at.

  126. This is a conflict between

  127. the sinful nature of the Christian

  128. and the Holy Spirit

  129. who now indwells the Christian.

  130. Just so we're clear,

  131. the Holy Spirit is a person.

  132. He's the third person of God.

  133. The third person of what we call the Trinity.

  134. God is three persons in one.

  135. There's not three gods,

  136. there's one God,

  137. and yet there are three distinct persons

  138. and the Holy Spirit is one of those persons.

  139. He is God and He lives in every single Christian

  140. the moment we are born again,

  141. the moment we trust in Jesus Christ

  142. for forgiveness and eternal life.

  143. In fact, the Holy Spirit is the only reason

  144. anyone in this room

  145. is a Christian in the first place.

  146. The Spirit gives life.

  147. The flesh is no help at all,

  148. Jesus says in John 6.

  149. So Paul explains this conflict

  150. in verse 17.

  151. Listen to what he says.

  152. For the desires of the flesh

  153. are against the Spirit,

  154. and the desires of the Spirit

  155. are against the flesh.

  156. For these are opposed to each other

  157. to keep you from doing

  158. the things you want to do.

  159. Do you notice the word against

  160. that Paul uses twice?

  161. When you see that word against,

  162. you should think hostile, enemy.

  163. The flesh and the Holy Spirit

  164. are enemies.

  165. If you think back to a science class

  166. that you had in school,

  167. probably in grade school or middle school,

  168. and your science teacher says,

  169. today class,

  170. we're going to look at magnets.

  171. Right?

  172. And a real magnet has kind of this

  173. north pole on it

  174. and a south pole on it,

  175. and it attracts the opposite pole

  176. of another magnet.

  177. Right?

  178. So if you take the north side

  179. of a magnet

  180. and the south side,

  181. they actually pull together.

  182. Paul is saying the opposite

  183. is true of the flesh and Spirit.

  184. You put the north end of a magnet

  185. against the north end of a magnet

  186. and they repel each other.

  187. They're headed in opposite directions.

  188. The flesh and the Spirit

  189. possess contrary affections

  190. and they're motivated

  191. and driven by opposing desires.

  192. That's the conflict

  193. Paul's talking about,

  194. but the good news is

  195. that it's not a fair fight.

  196. These are not equal opposites.

  197. So of course,

  198. we know as a Christian

  199. that the flesh

  200. and the temptations

  201. and the desires

  202. of things that are not of God

  203. can feel very strong.

  204. There can be a very strong pull

  205. toward these things.

  206. It can seem irresistible at points.

  207. But look at verse 16.

  208. Paul's not rejecting

  209. that experience,

  210. but he's saying something

  211. so full of hope

  212. in this verse.

  213. But I say,

  214. walk by the Spirit

  215. and you will not

  216. gratify the desires

  217. of the flesh.

  218. Paul's saying here

  219. that the possibility

  220. of gratifying the flesh

  221. in the moment,

  222. in the situation

  223. that you're walking

  224. by the Spirit

  225. is zero percent.

  226. Our English translation

  227. sounds a bit tame

  228. compared to what Paul's

  229. really trying to get at.

  230. He says,

  231. there is zero possibility,

  232. no potential

  233. whatsoever

  234. in gratifying the flesh

  235. and its desires

  236. if you are in that moment

  237. walking by the Spirit.

  238. Now just a caveat,

  239. Paul here is not saying

  240. that somehow

  241. we can ascend

  242. beyond the point

  243. where the flesh

  244. causes trouble

  245. in our lives.

  246. He's not saying

  247. that you should be perfect

  248. all day,

  249. every day,

  250. end of story.

  251. He's not saying that.

  252. We will have this

  253. lifelong conflict.

  254. But,

  255. he's saying

  256. there is hope.

  257. There is reason

  258. to have full confidence

  259. that when we are walking

  260. by the Spirit

  261. we will not be gratifying

  262. the desires

  263. of the flesh.

  264. It should make our ears

  265. perk up,

  266. friends.

  267. It should be filling

  268. our hope tanks

  269. of our hearts

  270. to hear that

  271. because we know

  272. all too well

  273. this inner conflict.

  274. facing this relentless

  275. day by day

  276. temptation

  277. and influence

  278. of the flesh.

  279. The discouragement

  280. and the heartache

  281. when we fail.

  282. Yet there's hope.

  283. The Holy Spirit,

  284. Paul says,

  285. is so much more powerful,

  286. so much more influential

  287. that it's not a fair fight.

  288. Whenever he leads,

  289. whenever we walk

  290. in his strength,

  291. we will never ever

  292. gratify the desires

  293. of the flesh.

  294. It is impossible

  295. because these desires

  296. are opposed

  297. to each other.

  298. They're not moving

  299. in the same direction,

  300. they're not on parallel tracks,

  301. they're opposed.

  302. If you're going this way,

  303. you can't be going that way.

  304. We all need this reminder

  305. today and every day,

  306. don't we?

  307. Maybe you're here

  308. and you're discouraged

  309. by a sin

  310. that just keeps cropping up

  311. in your life

  312. and it just seems like

  313. you can't get a handle on it,

  314. you can't gain victory.

  315. Paul would say,

  316. walk by the Spirit.

  317. Not in some kind of

  318. just dismissal sort of way,

  319. but look to Him.

  320. He's your hope.

  321. You will conquer the flesh

  322. by the Spirit.

  323. You need His help.

  324. You won't do it

  325. any other way.

  326. So don't look to yourself.

  327. Don't be gloomy.

  328. But walk by the Spirit.

  329. Maybe you're in a hard

  330. and stressful season.

  331. Just temptation

  332. feels more intense

  333. and more real

  334. just because you're strung out.

  335. You're tired

  336. and you're not thinking

  337. as clearly

  338. as you normally are.

  339. You need the Spirit.

  340. You need His help.

  341. But even if we're

  342. in a good spot

  343. in the room, right?

  344. Everything spiritually

  345. is going pretty well.

  346. We're not struggling

  347. with anything in particular.

  348. Still striving

  349. and yearning for holiness.

  350. Holy Spirit

  351. is who you need.

  352. We don't look

  353. an ounce more like Jesus

  354. by our own effort.

  355. It's by the Holy Spirit

  356. working in us.

  357. So that's reason number one.

  358. We're in a conflict

  359. and we need the Spirit

  360. to defeat the flesh.

  361. So walk by Him.

  362. The second reason

  363. Paul points to

  364. is in verses 18 to 23.

  365. He says,

  366. you need the Spirit

  367. because He produces

  368. and provides

  369. what the flesh cannot.

  370. You need the Spirit

  371. because He alone

  372. can produce things

  373. that the flesh

  374. has no hope

  375. of producing.

  376. And bear with me

  377. because this is

  378. the bulkiest part

  379. of the text.

  380. It's the bulkiest part

  381. of the sermon as well.

  382. The first thing

  383. we see in verse 18

  384. is the Spirit

  385. produces

  386. and provides

  387. freedom.

  388. Listen to 18.

  389. But if you are led

  390. by the Spirit,

  391. you are not under the law.

  392. Okay, I don't hear

  393. freedom.

  394. I don't hear

  395. anything about the flesh

  396. or what's going on here.

  397. When Paul says

  398. under the law,

  399. which he has

  400. three, four, five times

  401. previously in Galatians,

  402. he's speaking of

  403. being in captivity

  404. under the law,

  405. being in slavery

  406. under the law.

  407. If you want to turn

  408. to chapter 3,

  409. verse 23,

  410. I think it's most clear there

  411. what Paul's meaning

  412. by this phrase.

  413. Now, before faith came,

  414. we were held captive

  415. under the law,

  416. imprisoned

  417. until the coming faith

  418. would be revealed.

  419. Okay, so under the law

  420. means captivity,

  421. but what does this have to do

  422. with the flesh?

  423. Paul's been saying

  424. through chapters 3 and 4

  425. of Galatians

  426. is that those who are

  427. captive under the law

  428. are attempting

  429. in their own strength,

  430. aka according to the flesh,

  431. to achieve righteousness

  432. and salvation.

  433. They're trying to keep

  434. the law

  435. to earn righteousness,

  436. to earn salvation.

  437. And Paul's been warning

  438. the Galatians,

  439. you can't do so.

  440. By works of the law,

  441. no one

  442. will be justified.

  443. No one will be saved.

  444. Because the law

  445. reveals sin

  446. and the law

  447. imprisons us.

  448. So for the Jew

  449. who was trying to gain

  450. his salvation

  451. through law keeping,

  452. Paul says,

  453. you're a slave.

  454. You're not free

  455. and you're not righteous.

  456. You're a slave.

  457. In fact,

  458. Paul says,

  459. the law was never

  460. intended to save anyone.

  461. But our own flesh,

  462. our own pride,

  463. tries to save

  464. ourself anyway.

  465. The flesh

  466. enslaves religious people

  467. underneath the law

  468. that God gave

  469. for that very purpose.

  470. The Spirit

  471. alone

  472. frees

  473. them

  474. to live

  475. for Jesus.

  476. Verse 19

  477. continues this argument

  478. about freedom.

  479. Paul writes

  480. that

  481. he's talking about

  482. the flesh

  483. enslaving

  484. but the Spirit

  485. providing freedom.

  486. And Paul's been

  487. given kind of

  488. two ways

  489. that you can be

  490. enslaved.

  491. The first is the one

  492. I've just been talking about

  493. being under the law,

  494. being captive

  495. under the law.

  496. And now in 19

  497. he pivots and says,

  498. here's the second way

  499. you can be a slave.

  500. By living fully

  501. into the desires

  502. and passions

  503. of the flesh.

  504. You can be

  505. imprisoned by

  506. attempting to save

  507. yourself through

  508. rule keeping

  509. and you can be

  510. imprisoned by

  511. pursuing

  512. the immoral

  513. unrighteous

  514. works of

  515. the flesh.

  516. The Galatian

  517. church would be

  518. very familiar

  519. with this list

  520. in 19 to 21.

  521. This essentially

  522. was their

  523. former life.

  524. But they were

  525. in danger of

  526. reverting back

  527. to slavery

  528. though God

  529. had set them

  530. free not by

  531. becoming immoral

  532. unrighteous people

  533. again but by

  534. thinking that they

  535. could start

  536. keeping a law

  537. to save

  538. themselves.

  539. Both are

  540. slavery.

  541. That's why Paul

  542. can pivot so

  543. quickly from

  544. in verse 18

  545. talking about

  546. the law

  547. to verse 19

  548. talking about

  549. the works

  550. of the flesh.

  551. In his mind

  552. they're both

  553. under this

  554. category of

  555. slavery and

  556. captivity.

  557. Because he spent

  558. two chapters

  559. already talking

  560. about the

  561. law and

  562. its ability

  563. to enslave.

  564. He only needs

  565. to raise it

  566. in one sentence

  567. to draw all

  568. of that

  569. information

  570. back in.

  571. Essentially he

  572. says both

  573. the rule

  574. follower

  575. and the

  576. immoral

  577. are slaves.

  578. The spirit

  579. alone

  580. provides

  581. freedom.

  582. fruit.

  583. But additionally

  584. the spirit

  585. also provides

  586. Christ-like

  587. fruit.

  588. It's the

  589. point of the

  590. comparison in

  591. verses 19

  592. to 21

  593. with the

  594. fruit of the

  595. spirit in

  596. 22 and

  597. 23.

  598. Paul saying

  599. look what the

  600. flesh produces

  601. and provides.

  602. Only unrighteous

  603. things.

  604. Whether you're

  605. trying to keep

  606. the rule of

  607. God or

  608. whether you're

  609. just letting

  610. it loose and

  611. living for the

  612. flesh.

  613. The flesh

  614. produces unrighteous

  615. things.

  616. It's only the

  617. spirit who

  618. produces

  619. righteous fruit.

  620. Flesh cannot

  621. provide righteousness.

  622. It can't help

  623. you and me

  624. become more

  625. like Jesus

  626. Christ.

  627. It only works

  628. immorality.

  629. Now look a

  630. little bit more

  631. closely at this

  632. works of the

  633. flesh in

  634. 19 to 21.

  635. Paul's

  636. intentionally

  637. organized this

  638. for us.

  639. The first

  640. three works

  641. that he

  642. lists in

  643. verse 19

  644. they cover the

  645. full range of

  646. sexual sin.

  647. Whether it's

  648. immorality,

  649. adultery,

  650. homosexuality,

  651. lust,

  652. all of it.

  653. He covers

  654. them all in

  655. these three

  656. words.

  657. He says those

  658. are of the

  659. flesh.

  660. The next

  661. two on the

  662. list,

  663. idolatry and

  664. sorcery,

  665. deal with

  666. false religion.

  667. Worshipping

  668. a god other

  669. than the one

  670. true god.

  671. Or trying to

  672. manipulate this

  673. deity to do

  674. what you want

  675. him to.

  676. And the final

  677. two in the

  678. list,

  679. drunkenness

  680. and orgies,

  681. deal with this

  682. blatant lack of

  683. self-control.

  684. This kind of

  685. just letting

  686. loose.

  687. And rather

  688. than seeing

  689. that last

  690. word as

  691. some kind

  692. of sexual

  693. connotation,

  694. it's more

  695. of like the

  696. movie Animal

  697. House,

  698. just like some

  699. big frat

  700. party and

  701. carousing.

  702. It's kind

  703. of what you

  704. want to

  705. think of

  706. there.

  707. These are

  708. all works

  709. of the

  710. flesh.

  711. We skipped

  712. over the

  713. middle eight

  714. because Paul

  715. wants to

  716. draw attention

  717. here.

  718. He wants

  719. to focus

  720. in on the

  721. middle eight.

  722. And it

  723. starts the

  724. third word

  725. of verse

  726. 20.

  727. Just listen

  728. to these

  729. and notice

  730. the relational

  731. kind of

  732. components of

  733. these.

  734. These are

  735. sins that

  736. have to do

  737. with treatment

  738. of other

  739. people.

  740. Enmity,

  741. strife,

  742. jealousy,

  743. fits of

  744. anger,

  745. rivalries,

  746. dissensions,

  747. divisions,

  748. envy.

  749. It seems

  750. like Paul

  751. probably has

  752. the Judaizers

  753. in his mind

  754. as he's

  755. writing several

  756. of these.

  757. Strife,

  758. rivalries,

  759. division,

  760. envy.

  761. These people

  762. are coming

  763. into the

  764. church and

  765. wreaking havoc,

  766. dividing people

  767. over by

  768. speaking heresy

  769. and falsehood.

  770. People who are

  771. envious of

  772. Paul's position

  773. and authority

  774. and trying to

  775. get him in

  776. trouble and

  777. trying to

  778. oust him

  779. from having

  780. sway over

  781. this church.

  782. church.

  783. But not

  784. just that,

  785. this list

  786. kind of

  787. hits even

  788. closer to

  789. home for

  790. the Galatians.

  791. If you

  792. look at

  793. 5 verse

  794. 15,

  795. Paul's

  796. talking to

  797. the Galatians

  798. in this

  799. passage we

  800. heard three

  801. or four

  802. weeks ago

  803. and saying

  804. if you

  805. bite and

  806. devour

  807. one another,

  808. watch out

  809. that you're

  810. not consumed

  811. by one

  812. another.

  813. So the

  814. Galatians

  815. are kind

  816. of at

  817. each other's

  818. necks a

  819. little bit.

  820. And then

  821. in verse

  822. 26,

  823. the last

  824. verse of

  825. chapter 5,

  826. we see a

  827. similar idea

  828. again.

  829. Let us not

  830. become conceited,

  831. provoking one

  832. another,

  833. envying one

  834. another.

  835. These are

  836. real warnings

  837. because the

  838. Galatian church

  839. seems to be

  840. kind of taking

  841. on and

  842. developing some

  843. of these

  844. very divisive

  845. and hurtful

  846. and sinful

  847. fleshly

  848. practices that

  849. they're seeing

  850. exhibited in

  851. these false

  852. teachers.

  853. chapters.

  854. It's a

  855. pretty sobering

  856. list,

  857. isn't it?

  858. We should

  859. see ourselves

  860. in various

  861. ways and

  862. shapes and

  863. forms in

  864. various works

  865. on this

  866. list.

  867. Sobering

  868. list when we

  869. stop and

  870. think a

  871. little bit

  872. about it.

  873. And Paul

  874. doesn't even

  875. give a full

  876. list.

  877. He says,

  878. these are

  879. the all

  880. inclusive

  881. works of

  882. the flesh.

  883. Things like

  884. these.

  885. So we

  886. could go

  887. on and

  888. list more

  889. and more

  890. and more

  891. things.

  892. It's a

  893. sobering

  894. list because

  895. of the

  896. number of

  897. fleshly

  898. works that

  899. involve our

  900. treatment of

  901. one another.

  902. Rivalry and

  903. division and

  904. jealousy and

  905. envy and

  906. things like

  907. this.

  908. That doesn't

  909. mean that we

  910. must kind of

  911. stay quiet

  912. and just

  913. kind of keep

  914. the peace

  915. sort of as

  916. some fake

  917. facade of

  918. being united

  919. but it

  920. does mean

  921. that if we

  922. engage in

  923. heavy things

  924. and things

  925. we're passionate

  926. about that

  927. the words we

  928. choose,

  929. our tone of

  930. voice and

  931. the heartbeat

  932. underneath of

  933. those things

  934. matters a lot.

  935. I find it

  936. so sobering

  937. to recognize

  938. that if I

  939. am living

  940. a life that

  941. has fits of

  942. anger as

  943. just kind of

  944. the normal

  945. course of

  946. my existence

  947. that Paul

  948. says people

  949. that do this

  950. stuff don't

  951. inherit the

  952. kingdom.

  953. But Paul

  954. has not

  955. sort of

  956. listed this

  957. thing to

  958. sort of

  959. condemn

  960. anybody but

  961. to call

  962. the Galatians

  963. and to call

  964. us out of

  965. these things.

  966. We need

  967. help.

  968. Paul says

  969. the Spirit

  970. will provide

  971. the Christ-like

  972. fruit that

  973. you need.

  974. Only He can

  975. make us

  976. righteous like

  977. Jesus.

  978. We need

  979. Him and

  980. when we

  981. walk by

  982. Him,

  983. when we

  984. walk by

  985. the Spirit

  986. of Jesus

  987. Christ,

  988. this fruit

  989. that we

  990. see in

  991. verses 22

  992. and 23

  993. is evident

  994. moment by

  995. moment,

  996. circumstance

  997. by circumstance,

  998. but also

  999. increasingly so

  1000. as we

  1001. mature and

  1002. grow in

  1003. our faith.

  1004. This fruit

  1005. should be

  1006. blossoming and

  1007. expanding in

  1008. our lives

  1009. as we walk

  1010. by the Spirit

  1011. and seek

  1012. His help.

  1013. Notice

  1014. again that the

  1015. fruit of the

  1016. Spirit involves

  1017. so much of

  1018. this relational

  1019. kind of

  1020. dynamic.

  1021. Love,

  1022. patience,

  1023. kindness,

  1024. goodness,

  1025. gentleness,

  1026. things that

  1027. show up in

  1028. our interactions

  1029. with one

  1030. another.

  1031. And Paul

  1032. here is not

  1033. talking about

  1034. things that

  1035. are natural

  1036. temperament.

  1037. Some of us

  1038. are just very

  1039. by nature

  1040. kind people.

  1041. Some of us

  1042. are fairly

  1043. patient individuals,

  1044. it's our

  1045. natural disposition.

  1046. That's not

  1047. what Paul is

  1048. talking about.

  1049. He's not

  1050. saying,

  1051. well,

  1052. you get a

  1053. pass if

  1054. you're an

  1055. impatient guy.

  1056. You get a

  1057. pass on this

  1058. fruit.

  1059. Saying this

  1060. is fruit that

  1061. is of the

  1062. Spirit.

  1063. Only God

  1064. produces it

  1065. and He will

  1066. produce it

  1067. as we seek

  1068. His help

  1069. and walk

  1070. by the

  1071. Spirit.

  1072. God will

  1073. love and

  1074. serve others

  1075. even if

  1076. they may

  1077. annoy us

  1078. or disappoint

  1079. us or hurt

  1080. us.

  1081. It means

  1082. that

  1083. God will

  1084. produce the

  1085. fruit of

  1086. gentleness

  1087. inside of

  1088. us who

  1089. may be

  1090. struggling

  1091. to love

  1092. someone

  1093. who's

  1094. rude

  1095. or harsh

  1096. toward us.

  1097. And it

  1098. means that

  1099. we will be

  1100. kind

  1101. toward those

  1102. who are

  1103. impatient

  1104. and aren't

  1105. bearing the

  1106. fruit of

  1107. the Spirit.

  1108. And we

  1109. know all

  1110. too well

  1111. that we

  1112. can end

  1113. up on

  1114. both sides

  1115. of this

  1116. exchange,

  1117. right?

  1118. Sometimes

  1119. we bear

  1120. the fruit

  1121. of the

  1122. Spirit

  1123. for the

  1124. sake of

  1125. those who

  1126. are struggling

  1127. with something.

  1128. And other

  1129. times those

  1130. of us in

  1131. the church

  1132. around us,

  1133. our friends,

  1134. our brothers

  1135. and sisters

  1136. bear the

  1137. fruit for

  1138. us because

  1139. we need

  1140. it, because

  1141. we're struggling,

  1142. because we've

  1143. wronged

  1144. somebody.

  1145. All of

  1146. this is

  1147. provided by

  1148. the Spirit

  1149. and only

  1150. by the

  1151. Spirit.

  1152. And of

  1153. course it's

  1154. love that

  1155. headlines the

  1156. list.

  1157. This first

  1158. priority on

  1159. the list is

  1160. love, because

  1161. Paul has just

  1162. said in the

  1163. previous verses

  1164. that the

  1165. whole law is

  1166. fulfilled in

  1167. one word.

  1168. You shall

  1169. love your

  1170. neighbor as

  1171. yourself.

  1172. That's verse

  1173. 14.

  1174. Paul says

  1175. love is only

  1176. possible, true

  1177. love, the

  1178. love he's

  1179. talking about is

  1180. only possible and

  1181. yet readily

  1182. available as we

  1183. walk by the

  1184. Spirit.

  1185. We need the

  1186. Spirit to love

  1187. one another.

  1188. We need the

  1189. Spirit to

  1190. produce Christ

  1191. like fruit in

  1192. our lives.

  1193. Flesh doesn't

  1194. create these

  1195. things.

  1196. Only conflict and

  1197. division and

  1198. harm.

  1199. The Spirit

  1200. empowers us to

  1201. love, to

  1202. joy, to

  1203. peace,

  1204. patience and

  1205. kindness,

  1206. gentleness,

  1207. goodness,

  1208. faithfulness,

  1209. self-control.

  1210. And

  1211. ultimately, the

  1212. thing that the

  1213. Spirit provides

  1214. is eternal

  1215. life.

  1216. The flesh isn't

  1217. going to get you

  1218. there.

  1219. Paul says this

  1220. much at the end

  1221. of verse 21.

  1222. Those who

  1223. practice such

  1224. things, works of

  1225. the flesh, will

  1226. not inherit the

  1227. kingdom of God.

  1228. though we

  1229. don't see the

  1230. opposite idea at

  1231. the end of the

  1232. fruit of the

  1233. Spirit, it's

  1234. implied.

  1235. Those who are

  1236. bearing the fruit

  1237. of the Spirit,

  1238. those who are

  1239. walking by the

  1240. Spirit, are

  1241. sons of God and

  1242. they will inherit

  1243. eternal life.

  1244. life.

  1245. It's been said

  1246. that Jesus

  1247. accomplishes our

  1248. salvation and

  1249. the Holy Spirit

  1250. applies our

  1251. salvation.

  1252. He gives us

  1253. life in Jesus,

  1254. he sustains our

  1255. lives in Jesus,

  1256. he ultimately

  1257. will bring us

  1258. to glory.

  1259. So we need the

  1260. Spirit.

  1261. He provides what

  1262. the flesh cannot

  1263. provide.

  1264. Freedom,

  1265. Christ-like fruit,

  1266. eternal life.

  1267. It's the second

  1268. reason Paul gives

  1269. walk by the

  1270. Spirit.

  1271. The third and

  1272. final reason of

  1273. our text is in

  1274. verse 24.

  1275. We need the

  1276. Spirit because he

  1277. reminds us of who

  1278. we are in

  1279. Christ.

  1280. Paul writes in

  1281. verse 24,

  1282. and those who

  1283. belong to Christ,

  1284. Jesus, have

  1285. crucified the

  1286. flesh with its

  1287. passions and

  1288. desires.

  1289. This is a huge,

  1290. bodacious claim.

  1291. For those who

  1292. belong to Christ,

  1293. they have crucified

  1294. the flesh with its

  1295. passions and

  1296. desires.

  1297. sinners.

  1298. It means that the

  1299. Christian already

  1300. has the assurance

  1301. of victory over

  1302. the flesh because

  1303. it's already on the

  1304. cross being crucified

  1305. and done away with.

  1306. Friends, let me let

1307. you in on a little

  1308. secret.

  1309. Crucifixion always

  1310. works.

  1311. It always kills the

  1312. one it intends to

  1313. kill.

  1314. Paul says, those who

  1315. belong to Jesus have

  1316. crucified the flesh.

  1317. It's perishing, it's

  1318. dying, it's being done

  1319. away with.

1320. So in this verse, we

  1321. have another message of

  1322. hope.

  1323. It really is true.

  1324. The flesh is perishing

1325. because of who we are.

  1326. We need the Spirit

  1327. because He reminds us

1328. of who we are in

  1329. Christ.

  1330. Let me help realize

  1331. that seems like I

1332. just went off on a

  1333. tangent.

  1334. But if we think

  1335. about it for a

  1336. second, we all know

  1337. the difference, right,

  1338. between a head

  1339. knowledge and a heart

  1340. knowledge.

  1341. This is the longest

  1342. two feet.

  1343. to travel ever

  1344. from our head

  1345. to our heart.

1346. How do we get what's

  1347. true about Jesus and

1348. what's true about us in

  1349. Him from our head

  1350. into our heart?

1351. The flesh is not going

1352. to do it for us,

  1353. friends.

  1354. We can't think hard

1355. enough to get it from

  1356. our head into our

  1357. heart.

  1358. It's the Spirit alone

1359. who will remind us and

  1360. impress these things upon

1361. our heart in such a

1362. way that they begin to

  1363. operate out of us.

1364. We need the Spirit to

1365. remind us of who we

  1366. are in Christ.

  1367. Paul says this much,

  1368. that's the Spirit's role

  1369. back in chapter 4,

  1370. verse 6.

  1371. He says this,

  1372. And because you are

1373. sons, God has sent the

1374. Spirit of His Son into

  1375. our hearts, crying,

  1376. Abba, Father.

1377. This is how what's true

1378. about us gets from our

  1379. head to our heart.

  1380. The Spirit reminds us.

1381. He lives and dwells in

1382. our hearts and He reminds

1383. us of what is true about

  1384. us.

  1385. Words, either spoken or

1386. on a page, can get into

  1387. our heads.

1388. They can't get into our

  1389. hearts.

1390. We need help for that.

1391. We need the Spirit for

  1392. that.

  1393. He alone affects the

  1394. heart.

1395. We need Him to remember

1396. who we are, not in some

  1397. mental or intellectual

1398. way, but in a way that

  1399. transforms us and changes

  1400. who we are.

1401. Because we know we can

1402. all be forgetful that we

1403. even belong to Jesus in

  1404. the first place.

  1405. There's other times we

  1406. can be hardened and

  1407. callous and just don't

1408. want anything to do with

  1409. the truth.

1410. We need the Spirit to

1411. soften us enough for it

1412. to get lodged in our

  1413. heart and start producing

  1414. fruit.

  1415. Sometimes we can get

  1416. tunnel vision thinking

1417. that the flesh is winning

1418. and we get so discouraged

1419. that we just check out.

1420. The Spirit of Jesus is

  1421. our helper.

  1422. He's who we need.

  1423. The beautiful thing Jesus

  1424. says in John 16, 13, that

1425. when the Spirit comes, He

1426. will guide us into all

  1427. truth.

  1428. He will reveal everything

1429. we need to know about God,

  1430. about our salvation, about

  1431. our very lives.

1432. The Spirit will bring us

  1433. into that truth.

1434. Jesus doesn't say, this book

1435. that I'm leaving you or the

1436. self-help book or your own

  1437. intuition, but the Holy

  1438. Spirit, God Himself, will

1439. remind us of what we need to

1440. remember in order to live

  1441. into this salvation accomplished

  1442. by Jesus for us.

1443. So we tried to argue this

1444. morning from Galatians 5 that

1445. we need the Holy Spirit's

  1446. help.

1447. We need Him to defeat the

  1448. flesh.

1449. We need Him to produce and

1450. provide what only He can

  1451. provide that the flesh

  1452. cannot.

1453. And we need the Spirit to

1454. remind us of who we are in

  1455. Christ.

  1456. Christ.

1457. So walk by the Spirit,

  1458. friends.

  1459. Hopefully this text has

1460. convinced you of your need

1461. to do so this morning, but

  1462. I'm guessing maybe you're

  1463. still wondering, well, how

  1464. do I do that?

1465. What does it mean to walk by

  1466. the Spirit?

  1467. It seems great.

1468. Yeah, sign me up, but how's

  1469. this look?

  1470. What does it mean?

1471. Well, with the time we have

1472. left, I want to try and help

1473. us answer that a little bit.

  1474. First, I think there's

  1475. confusion about who the

1476. Holy Spirit is, what He

1477. intends to do, and why He

  1478. intends to do it.

1479. So let me give us a few

  1480. things.

  1481. A couple of, it's not this,

  1482. it's not this.

1483. Sometimes it might be that.

  1484. It's always this.

  1485. It's not this.

1486. Your alarm goes off in the

1487. morning, kind of wipe the

1488. sleep dust out of your eyes,

1489. and you wait for the Spirit

1490. to tell you whether you

1491. should drink coffee or tea.

  1492. It's not that.

1493. The Spirit is interested in

  1494. truth and righteousness, not

  1495. beverage selections.

  1496. It's not this either.

1497. The Spirit told me to punch

1498. that guy in the face.

1499. Because I was mad at him.

1500. Or the Spirit told me to

1501. divorce my wife and marry

  1502. this other lady.

  1503. The Spirit never contradicts

  1504. the Bible.

  1505. He always upholds it.

  1506. Sometimes, there's a

  1507. particular prompting.

1508. It's kind of hard to explain

  1509. it.

1510. It doesn't sort of show up as

1511. an objective thing in the

  1512. Bible, but there's a

1513. prompting to, hey, get on the

1514. other side of the sidewalk.

1515. Or, man, I think I need to

1516. change lanes here or something.

  1517. Sometimes, this happens,

  1518. right?

  1519. We've probably experienced

  1520. some of this.

1521. We shouldn't go looking for

1522. these things as if the Holy

1523. Spirit is just wanting to

1524. make us robots and just kind of

  1525. dictate every single decision

1526. and move of our lives like that.

1527. It's not primarily what he

1528. cares to do in us and through

  1529. us.

1530. We shouldn't rely on this type of

  1531. thing.

1532. Some people might debate that,

1533. but that's kind of my take

  1534. anyway.

1535. But always, we can be sure that

1536. the Holy Spirit is seeking to

1537. produce and work this way in all

  1538. of us.

1539. He's looking to glorify Jesus.

  1540. John 16, 14.

1541. He's looking to meet every single

  1542. spiritual need we have.

  1543. He's looking to produce

  1544. righteousness in our attitudes,

1545. our affections, and our actions.

1546. He's looking to assist our prayers.

  1547. Abba, Father.

1548. And groanings with too deep for

1549. words when we don't know what to

1550. pray for as we ought.

  1551. Romans 8.

1552. He's always interested in enabling

1553. us to worship the risen Jesus.

  1554. Always.

1555. Every time we gather, the Holy

1556. Spirit is interested in our

1557. worship and empowering us to

1558. worship God in the way that he's

  1559. due.

1560. He's always guiding us into all

  1561. truth.

1562. He always wants us to come to a

  1563. greater and greater understanding

1564. of the word of God and what it

1565. means for our lives and who God

1566. is revealed to be in it.

1567. He's always giving us understanding

1568. of God and of his word.

1569. These are things the Holy Spirit

  1570. always delights to do.

1571. Always delights to convict us

1572. us of sin and to transform us into

1573. the righteousness and image of

  1574. Jesus.

  1575. He's passionate about these

1576. things and he works these things

1577. constantly in our lives on behalf of

  1578. Christ.

1579. So now, just a couple little

1580. descriptions of what it can look

  1581. like.

1582. How do I walk by the Spirit?

1583. What are you getting at, Paul, when you

1584. say walk by the Spirit?

1585. I'll try to just sort of break that

1586. down and deconstruct it a little bit.

1587. And this isn't perfect, but I hope it

  1588. helps.

1589. We need to be aware of the Holy Spirit's

  1590. presence in our lives.

  1591. He's always with us.

1592. He lives in our hearts.

1593. He doesn't kind of go on vacation.

1594. He's always present in the heart of the

  1595. Christian.

1596. We need to just cultivate this awareness

1597. that he is with us.

1598. So many times, right, we can just walk

1599. around unaware of his presence.

1600. That does us no good if the command is to

  1601. walk by him.

1602. We've got to be aware of him.

1603. And the more we're able to remember him,

1604. the more we can walk by him.

  1605. Walk in his power.

  1606. Walk by his strength.

1607. Walk on the path that he is revealing to

1608. us from the Word of God for our ultimate

  1609. good.

1610. It's kind of like this.

  1611. We have a two-story house.

1612. And even if my wife is upstairs and I'm

  1613. downstairs, I know she's there.

  1614. I know she's home.

  1615. I know she's present simply because I know

  1616. where she is.

1617. It's kind of like that.

1618. If we can kind of develop that sort of

1619. awareness of the Holy Spirit, he's always

  1620. home.

  1621. He's always in us.

1622. He's always acting in our lives.

1623. To develop an awareness of his presence.

1624. But two, cultivate a dependence upon him.

  1625. Particularly for everything spiritual.

  1626. You can't understand a Bible verse?

1627. Pray to the Holy Spirit to illuminate, to teach

  1628. you what it means.

1629. And you might want to go ask help from a friend

1630. who studied it longer or whatever.

1631. But the Holy Spirit wants us to know God's Word.

1632. Wants us to know the truth.

  1633. Depend upon him.

1634. He should be your first call.

1635. You need wisdom for a major decision in your

  1636. life. James 1.5

1637. If anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask God.

  1638. Spirit, you're with me.

  1639. I need wisdom.

  1640. I need help.

  1641. I don't know what I'm doing.

1642. Desiring to love your spouse,

  1643. your neighbor,

  1644. your brother, sister better.

  1645. It's the Spirit's fruit.

  1646. Ask him.

1647. Depend on him to bear that fruit

  1648. in your life.

  1649. He will.

1650. I was thinking this week,

1651. I was convicted by this,

  1652. that

  1653. though I would say

1654. I don't want to rely on the Spirit

1655. to kind of decide which grocery store

  1656. I frequent,

  1657. how easily

  1658. I can turn to

  1659. sad sources

  1660. for information

1661. when the Spirit should be

1662. the one I turn to.

  1663. I don't do this particular one

  1664. but it's like

  1665. turning to Google

1666. to seek some spiritual answer

1667. instead of going to the Spirit

  1668. of the living God

  1669. dwelling inside of us.

  1670. It's silly

  1671. and yet

1672. I do this stuff all the time.

  1673. I don't rely

1674. and depend on the one

  1675. who lives in me

  1676. and wants my good.

1677. Wants me to know God.

1678. Wants me to be wise

  1679. in my actions.

  1680. Wants me to put

  1681. the flesh to death.

1682. Must depend on the Spirit.

  1683. That's walking by Him.

  1684. Walking by the Spirit

  1685. means growing in godliness.

  1686. 1 Thessalonians chapter 4

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

1687. says the will of God

  1688. is your sanctification.

  1689. The will of God

1690. is that you would come

1691. to resemble more and more

1692. the person of Jesus Christ.

  1693. Your character,

  1694. your attitudes,

  1695. your actions

  1696. would be like Jesus.

  1697. I want Paul's question

  1698. in Galatians 3 verse 3

    Galatians 3:3

  1699. ringing in my mind

1700. a lot for this reason.

1701. He writes to the Galatians,

  1702. are you so foolish

  1703. that having begun

  1704. by the Spirit,

  1705. are you now being

  1706. perfected by the flesh?

1707. Are you trying to work

1708. this out on your own?

1709. If we want to grow in godliness,

1710. we need the Holy Spirit.

  1711. And growing in godliness

1712. is walking by the Spirit.

  1713. I cannot grow,

  1714. I will not grow

1715. apart from the Spirit's help.

  1716. He gives the growth.

  1717. So the last thing.

  1718. All of these,

  1719. I've been trying to

  1720. both help us see

  1721. that the Spirit

  1722. has this active,

  1723. ongoing presence

  1724. in our life,

  1725. but that we're also

  1726. cooperating along with Him.

  1727. This isn't some

1728. just kind of sit down

  1729. on the couch

1730. and let Him drag us around.

  1731. But we cooperate,

  1732. we press in

  1733. in the ways

1734. that God has called us to,

  1735. right?

  1736. And it's,

1737. these aren't super complex things,

1738. but we draw near to God

  1739. through His Word.

  1740. We pray to Him

  1741. and seek His help.

  1742. So we're cooperating,

  1743. we're cultivating

  1744. this dependence,

  1745. this awareness.

  1746. Essentially,

  1747. walking by the Spirit

  1748. is cultivating

  1749. a relationship with Him.

  1750. It's forming the habit

  1751. of seeking His wisdom

  1752. as we make decisions

  1753. that pertain

  1754. to our spiritual well-being.

  1755. It's forming the habit

  1756. of opening our Bible,

1757. knowing that He is there

  1758. ready to help us.

  1759. So we pray,

  1760. Psalm 119.18,

  1761. Open my eyes

  1762. that I might behold

  1763. wondrous things

  1764. from Your Word.

  1765. It's forming the habit

  1766. of making every effort

  1767. to rely upon Him

  1768. for our faith.

  1769. It's a lifelong endeavor.

  1770. We don't ever arrive,

  1771. but we strive

  1772. to make it normal,

1773. to make it a habit

  1774. to depend on Him.

  1775. It's like breathing,

  1776. second nature.

1777. We want to be so aware

  1778. and so dependent

  1779. on the Spirit

  1780. that it just becomes

  1781. naturally who we are

  1782. because we've cultivated it

  1783. so much.

  1784. we're conditioned

  1785. and poised

1786. to walk by the Spirit

  1787. because we need Him

  1788. so much

  1789. in our lives.

  1790. Church,

  1791. let's seek the Spirit.

  1792. Let's walk by Him

  1793. because we need Him.

  1794. We need Him

  1795. for our salvation.

  1796. Let's pray.

  1797. Father,

1798. thank You for Your Word.

  1799. I recognize

  1800. I've said a lot of things

  1801. and none of it

  1802. will bear fruit

  1803. apart from Your Spirit.

  1804. Spirit,

1805. would You have Your way

  1806. in our hearts,

  1807. in our lives.

  1808. Would You help us?

  1809. We need You.

  1810. Pray in Jesus' name.

  1811. Amen.

  1812. Amen.
