  1. Well, the Salvadis just got back from a vacation, and it was great.

  2. So we're refreshed, refocused, and I'm raring to go.

  3. But I had this privilege of coming back to preaching a sermon this morning on giving.

  4. And it's a really interesting situation because I started asking myself,

  5. when was the last time I preached on giving and I couldn't remember?

  6. And so I just want to make sure you are all understanding why I'm preaching this sermon on giving.

  7. In fact, let me begin by saying why I'm not preaching this sermon on giving.

  8. I'm not preaching this sermon on giving because we're behind in our giving.

  9. If you look at our budget, we've got this little kind of layout where our budgeted, projected giving should be

  10. and where our actual giving is, and we're a little bit behind right now.

  11. We're aware of it, but we're not concerned about it.

  12. We've got some great godly people who are paying attention to these things.

  13. But that's not why I'm preaching this sermon.

  14. It may help.

  15. Nor am I preaching this sermon because I don't think I get paid enough.

  16. So start off the new year, hey, jingle, jingle, help us out a little bit more.

  17. No, Jenny and I, Billy and his family, Matt and his family, Mary, you take care of us so well.

  18. So I'm not preaching this because I think I need to get paid more.

  19. So here's why I'm preaching this sermon.

  20. It's the next in line.

  21. We're committed here at Christ the King Church to preach expository sermons,

  22. to preach through books of the Bible as a whole.

  23. And so we preach a section at a time, typically through the book of Galatians.

  24. And today I'm to preach Galatians 6, 6 through 10, which is about giving.

  25. And so what this is about is the health of this particular body,

  26. that we exercise a spiritual grace of giving.

  27. So this is about how we use our money and resources, which brings me to this point.

  28. Classically, there are two groups of people when it comes to money and the using of money.

  29. There are the spenders and then there are the savers.

  30. And so if you're familiar with the old Miller Lite commercials that say,

  31. taste great or less filling,

  32. when it comes to money, most people are like,

  33. spend more or save more.

  34. That's kind of how it boils down to.

  35. But this morning, what I want you to see through this passage is,

  36. it's not so much whether you're a spender or a saver,

  37. it's if you're a sower of your money to the Spirit for the good of others.

  38. And so this morning, the Spirit is going to be seeking to grow us in our giving.

  39. And speaking of the Holy Spirit,

  40. I'm not sure if you've been following the book of Galatians,

  41. but the beginning of the book of Galatians, chapters 1 through 4,

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  42. it's primarily about the gospel.

  43. Christ died on the cross.

  44. This offering of salvation to all people,

  45. and we receive this gift by faith alone in Christ alone.

  46. There's nothing we can add to that to earn our salvation.

  47. And so chapters 1 through 4 of Galatians is primarily about the gospel,

  48. what God has done for us in Christ.

  49. And then we turn a corner into chapter 5 and 6.

  50. And so there's a big emphasis on the Holy Spirit in chapters 5 and 6.

  51. And so what we see here is what Christ has done for us,

  52. our freedom in the gospel,

  53. we live out by walking by the Spirit.

  54. The Spirit of God has come to dwell in each of us

  55. so that we could live out the freedom accomplished by Christ.

  56. And if you're wondering where all this is coming from,

  57. this is actually prophesied in the Old Testament.

  58. This is the age of the new covenant established by Jesus.

  59. Jeremiah 31 and 33 point to this.

  60. Ezekiel 36 point to this age of the Spirit.

  61. Joel 2 talked about this outpouring of the Spirit.

  62. Pentecost and Acts 2.

  63. It's the fulfillment of what was predicted in Joel 2.

  64. We now, because of what Christ has done,

  65. we live in the power of the Spirit.

  66. We live out the freedom accomplished by Christ

  67. in the power of the Spirit.

  68. And again, I just want to clarify something here.

  69. When we talk about the Holy Spirit,

  70. we're not talking about a what.

  71. We're talking about a who.

  72. Just as God the Father is a person,

  73. and just as God the Son is a person,

  74. God the Holy Spirit is a person.

  75. So He's personally active in each of our lives as believers

  76. to bring about God's purposes.

  77. And when Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit in John 16, 14,

  78. He said of the Spirit,

  79. He will glorify me.

  80. So we can be assured of this,

  81. that the person of the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in each one of us

  82. so that ultimately we would glorify Christ with our lives.

  83. Live out the freedom.

  84. But I just want to make another observation for you too.

  85. Do you remember who inspired people to write the Scriptures?

  86. It was the Holy Spirit, 2 Peter 1.21.

  87. The Holy Spirit moved men along to write down what God intended.

  88. So here's how to think about walking by the Holy Spirit.

  89. It's not some kind of mystical,

  90. kind of trance-like state we get into.

  91. It is rather being acted upon by the Holy Spirit,

  92. trusting in Him.

  93. The goal is to glorify Christ

  94. according to the very words the Holy Spirit inspired authors to write.

  95. So when we walk by the Holy Spirit,

  96. when Galatians 5.16, we walk by the Spirit,

  97. or 5.18, we are led by the Spirit,

  98. or 5.26, we are to keep in step with the Spirit,

  99. or Romans chapter 8, we are to set our minds on the Spirit.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  100. We are actually, in doing so,

  101. seeking to exalt Christ by living according to His Word,

  102. and it will be a blessing to all around us,

  103. because it will fulfill the command to love your neighbor as yourself.

  104. And so when we get into the end of Galatians 5,

  105. we are told those who live by the Spirit,

  106. keep in step with the Spirit.

  107. If you've been born again by the Spirit,

  108. you will live in the power of the Spirit.

  109. And then what we see in the early in chapter 6,

  110. are examples of keeping in step with the Spirit.

  111. Gently restoring a brother or sister caught in a trespass,

  112. it's keeping in step with the Spirit.

  113. Bearing one another's burdens and fulfilling the law of Christ,

  114. it's keeping in step with the Spirit.

  115. Soberly, accurately seeing yourself in relationship to others,

  116. you're not thinking of yourself more highly,

  117. you don't think of something when you're not,

  118. judgment's in coming, that's walking by the Spirit.

  119. And so now, as we turn to chapter 6, verses 6 through 10,

  120. which is a passage about giving,

  121. it's a way we live out the Spirit.

  122. It's a way we live out our freedom in Christ.

  123. The Spirit is at work in each of us,

  124. leading us to so generously for the good of others.

  125. Now, if you look at this passage,

  126. chapter 6, 6 through 10,

  127. there's no mention of money.

  128. You don't see the word money.

  129. It's not in there.

  130. You might go, Jerry Maguire,

  131. show me the money.

  132. Show me the money.

  133. Here's what I can show you.

  134. The word good.

  135. Let the one who's taught the word

  136. share all good things with the one who teaches.

  137. Paul is not telling the congregation

  138. to compliment the pastor on a good sermon.

  139. I would welcome that.

  140. But he's saying something more significant than that.

  141. So that word good then shows up in verse 9 again.

  142. And let us not grow weary in doing good.

  143. Look at verse 10.

  144. As we have opportunity to let us do good to everyone.

  145. This good is the good of loving people materially

  146. with your possessions and with your finances.

  147. That's the good you're to share

  148. with those who teach God's Word.

  149. That's the good you're to do to everyone,

  150. especially the household of faith.

  151. Now if you've got a question

  152. about the sowing and reaping,

  153. which is in verse 7 and 8,

  154. that metaphor, sowing and reaping,

  155. is an agricultural metaphor,

  156. planting and harvesting.

  157. It's used all throughout the Bible.

  158. But the only other place Paul uses it

  159. is in 2 Corinthians 9.

  160. And you know what that section is about?

  161. Giving.

  162. A cheerful giver.

  163. So what I want to lay out at the beginning is

  164. this passage,

  165. 6, 6 through 10,

  166. is about giving generously

  167. of what we have to others.

  168. So if I were to boil it down to 11 words,

  169. it would be this.

  170. Sow your money

  171. to the Spirit

  172. for the good of others.

  173. That's what God wants of us.

  174. To sow our money,

  175. sow our material possessions,

  176. to sow them to the Spirit

  177. for the good of others.

  178. And so, let's unpack this.

  179. And the way we're going to unpack this,

  180. there are four moves in this passage.

  181. First, in verse 6,

  182. you see the command to give.

  183. Second, in verses 7 and 8,

  184. there's a warning related to giving.

  185. And then in verse 9,

  186. there's some encouragement

  187. when it comes to giving

  188. because we can all get a little weary

  189. and want to give up.

  190. And then in verse 10,

  191. we have conclusion.

  192. To give generously.

  193. Sow.

  194. Sow your money to the Spirit

  195. for the good of others.

  196. Now let's look at this command

  197. a little bit more

  198. in detail.

  199. Verse 6.

  200. Let the one who has taught the word

  201. share all good things

  202. with the one who teaches.

  203. That word share is a command.

  204. In the original language,

  205. in the Greek language

  206. that this is written in,

  207. verse 6 starts emphatically

  208. with the word koinonia.

  209. Share.

  210. It's emphatic.

  211. Now that word,

  212. we get the word koinonia from.

  213. If you're familiar with Greek,

  214. that means it can be translated

  215. fellowship or partnership.

  216. If you flip over

  217. a couple books to your right

  218. to the book of Philippians,

  219. Paul uses that word quite a bit

  220. with the Philippian church.

  221. If you look at Philippians chapter 1,

    Philippians 1:3–5

  222. verses 3 through 5,

  223. we read this.

  224. I thank my God

  225. in all my remembrance of you,

  226. always in every prayer of mine

  227. for you,

  228. all making my prayer with joy

  229. because of your koinonia

  230. in the gospel

  231. from the first day until now.

  232. Now if you flip over

  233. a couple more pages

  234. in the book of Philippians

  235. to chapter 4,

  236. in verse 14,

  237. he says,

  238. yet it was kind of you

  239. to koinonia my trouble,

  240. to share my trouble.

  241. And you Philippians yourselves

  242. know that in the beginning

  243. of the gospel,

  244. when I left Macedonia,

  245. no church entered

  246. into koinonia with me

  247. in giving and receiving,

  248. except you only.

  249. this command to share

  250. is a command to partner,

  251. to work together

  252. to a particular end.

  253. Notice who this command is to

  254. in Galatians 6.

  255. Let the one who's taught the word,

  256. the one who's taught the word,

  257. the one who receives God's word,

  258. they are to share

  259. all good things.

  260. So all of you

  261. who regularly benefit

  262. from the preaching

  263. of the word

  264. on Sunday morning,

  265. this is specifically

  266. aimed at you.

  267. Share all good things.

  268. Share of your financial resources.

  269. Share of your material possessions.

  270. Partner.

  271. With who?

  272. Well, it's right there

  273. in the text.

  274. Let the one who's taught

  275. the word share

  276. all good things

  277. with the one who teaches.

  278. The preacher.

  279. The person proclaiming the word.

  280. And so what we have here

  281. is a very interesting relationship

  282. within the body of Christ.

  283. We have a congregation

  284. who is receiving

  285. and benefiting

  286. from the work,

  287. from the word

  288. that the preacher's preaching.

  289. And corresponding to that,

  290. the congregation

  291. is sharing in all

  292. their good possessions

  293. to help that preacher

  294. keep preaching faithfully.

  295. Have you heard the phrase

  296. sharing is caring?

  297. It has all kinds of nuances

  298. in this passage.

  299. Now it's a little awkward

  300. to talk about this.

  301. It's pretty awkward

  302. to preach about it.

  303. But we have nothing

  304. to be ashamed of

  305. because this is the way

  306. that God has designed it.

  307. He's designed the body

  308. to work together

  309. for a reason.

  310. It's right here

  311. in Holy Rich.

  312. So if you want to get

  313. crass about it,

  314. make sure you're

  315. paying your pastor.

  316. Make sure you're

  317. freeing up his time

  318. so that he can be

  319. preaching the word.

  320. In Christ the King Church,

  321. you do that faithfully.

  322. But I want to point

  323. to something else

  324. that may not be obvious.

  325. It's why.

  326. Now remember,

  327. back in the day,

  328. the Galatians,

  329. if you remember the history

  330. of what's going on here,

  331. Paul is writing this letter

  332. because there's been

  333. some false teachers

  334. that have gotten

  335. into the Galatian churches

  336. and they're preaching

  337. a false doctrine

  338. and it's resulting

  339. in great discord

  340. and confusion

  341. and hurt

  342. to the churches.

  343. And so the reason

  344. why Paul is saying this

  345. to these churches

  346. in Galatia,

  347. hey, make sure

  348. you're paying your pastor.

  349. It's for the health

  350. of the church

  351. because there's this threat

  352. of false doctrine.

  353. And so when we read here,

  354. you make sure

  355. you must share

  356. all good things

  357. with the one

  358. who is teaching the word,

  359. those who receive the word.

  360. It's the word

  361. of the gospel

  362. revealed in the Bible.

  363. Ultimately,

  364. this is incredibly pragmatic.

  365. God is very concerned

  366. about the health

  367. of His church,

  368. the doctrinal health

  369. of His church.

  370. And so He wants churches

  371. to be freeing up

  372. their preachers

  373. to be able to invest

  374. the sweetest time

  375. of their weeks

  376. in order to providing

  377. faithful,

  378. wholesome sermons

  379. that feed the flock,

  380. inform the flock,

  381. so that the flock

  382. lives in freedom.

  383. I have a nephew.

  384. His name is Benton.

  385. We call him Biebs.

  386. Biebs likes to pepper me

  387. with questions

  388. about what I do.

  389. How long do you preach?

  390. 40 minutes.

  391. How long does it take you

  392. to prepare a 40-minute sermon?

  393. 15 to 20 hours?

  394. When I think about

  395. if I were holding down

  396. a 40 to 50-hour job,

  397. trying to prepare

  398. a faithful sermon

  399. for this congregation,

  400. I can't tell you

  401. the kind of gratitude

  402. I have

  403. to be able to have

  404. my sweetest hours

  405. of the week

  406. freed up

  407. to pour myself

  408. into preparing sermons

  409. to feed you all

  410. so that you can live

  411. in the good

  412. of the freedom

  413. of what Christ has done.

  414. Ultimately,

  415. behind this command

  416. to share

  417. and for us

  418. to partner

  419. is the health

  420. of the church.

  421. Sharing is caring.

  422. Not just for me,

  423. not just for the other pastors,

  424. not just for you,

  425. but for the health,

  426. the spiritual health

  427. of this congregation.

  428. Sow your money

  429. to the Spirit

  430. for the good of others.

  431. Now let me point you

  432. to the warning

  433. in verses 7 and 8.

  434. We read,

  435. Do not be deceived.

  436. God is not mocked.

  437. For whatever one sows,

  438. that will he also reap.

  439. Now when you initially

  440. read that,

  441. you're kind of like,

  442. well this is coming

  443. out of nowhere.

  444. In fact,

  445. if you're reading

  446. out of the NIV,

  447. the NIV makes

  448. verse 6

  449. its own paragraph

  450. and then 7 through 10

  451. its own paragraph.

  452. It kind of disconnects it to.

  453. But it's all related

  454. because remember

  455. in verse 6

  456. we have this speaking

  457. of sharing in good things

  458. with the preacher.

  459. And then in verses 9 and 10

  460. we come back

  461. to doing good

  462. to everyone,

  463. especially those

  464. of the household of faith.

  465. And so the sowing

  466. and reaping,

  467. don't mock God,

  468. is in the middle of that.

  469. It's got everything

  470. to do with our giving.

  471. And we learn

  472. from verse 3

  473. in Galatians 6

  474. that it's already possible

  475. to deceive yourself

  476. as a Christian.

  477. To think of yourself

  478. more highly than you ought.

  479. Well, it's very possible

  480. to deceive yourself

  481. when it comes

  482. to your giving.

  483. Don't be deceived.

  484. God is not mocked.

  485. Here's some ways

  486. that we can deceive ourselves

  487. when in terms of our giving.

  488. One way is to say this.

  489. It's to think,

  490. I just have so little to give.

  491. It really doesn't matter.

  492. Nobody will notice

  493. you're deceiving yourself.

  494. Because God notices.

  495. another version of this is,

  496. I can't afford to give.

  497. I don't have any money to give.

  498. I don't have anything to give.

  499. What we're about to read

  500. is that you can't afford

  501. not to give.

  502. Another version of this

  503. kind of deception

  504. of ourselves

  505. is this idea,

  506. especially for younger folks,

  507. it's, hey,

  508. I'm just starting out.

  509. I just got out of school.

  510. I got all this debt.

  511. When I get into

  512. a better place

  513. of financial health,

  514. then I'll start giving.

  515. The question is,

  516. is that what God's word

  517. calls you to?

  518. And if you look at a passage

  519. like Proverbs 3, 9 and 10,

  520. we are to honor God

  521. with our wealth,

  522. to give him

  523. of the first fruits

  524. of what we receive.

  525. Don't deceive.

  526. Don't deceive yourself.

  527. Even if it means

  528. starting little,

  529. start.

  530. Another deception is this.

  531. I'll give whatever is left

  532. at the end of the month.

  533. And again,

  534. Proverbs 3, 9, 10

  535. talks about

  536. trusting the Lord,

  537. honoring him with our wealth,

  538. giving of our first fruit,

  539. not leftovers.

  540. others.

  541. Another deception

  542. is thinking,

  543. hey, you know what?

  544. God will provide

  545. for this church.

  546. They don't need me.

  547. But what we're seeing here

  548. is that God

  549. has actually called

  550. those who benefit

  551. from the word,

  552. the ministry of the word

  553. of a particular church,

  554. to commit to that

  555. particular church

  556. financially.

  557. God is not mocked.

  558. That word,

  559. mocked,

  560. in the original language,

  561. carries the sense

  562. of turning your nose

  563. up to somebody.

  564. When we dismiss God

  565. in terms of our giving,

  566. we're turning our nose

  567. up to him.

  568. Another way to say it is,

  569. you're not taking God

  570. seriously.

  571. You're not taking

  572. God seriously.

  573. We must be taking

  574. God seriously

  575. because he has built

  576. into this world

  577. an undeniable principle

  578. of sowing and reaping.

  579. Don't be deceived.

  580. God is not mocked.

  581. For whatever one sows,

  582. that will he also reap.

  583. All throughout the Bible,

  584. when we read about reaping,

  585. read about harvesting,

  586. oftentimes,

  587. more often than not,

  588. it has to do with

  589. God's judgment.

  590. Now, if you don't know

  591. what sowing and reaping is,

  592. it's another way of talking

  593. about planting

  594. and harvesting.

  595. And what the principle is,

  596. is what you plant,

  597. you will harvest.

  598. It's a cause and effect

  599. relationship.

  600. It's actions and consequences.

  601. And generally speaking,

  602. it's at work in all of our lives

  603. because if you sow gossip,

  604. you will reap discord.

  605. If you sow junk food

  606. into your body,

  607. you will reap unhealth

  608. of your body.

  609. If you sow lies,

  610. you will reap mistrust.

  611. If you sow laziness,

  612. you will reap

  613. being unreliable.

  614. So generally speaking,

  615. this law of sowing and reaping

  616. is a law of cause and effect

  617. relationship.

  618. But what I've been trying

  619. to argue is this cause

  620. and effect relationship,

  621. Paul is specifically applying it

  622. to our giving,

  623. our generosity.

  624. God is not mocked.

  625. This principle of cause and effect,

  626. of sowing and reaping,

  627. is in effect right now

  628. in your life.

  629. If you are sowing your money

  630. to greed,

  631. you will reap

  632. Ebenezer Scroogeism.

  633. the isolation,

  634. the misery

  635. of being a humbug.

  636. It's not what the Spirit

  637. is seeking to do.

  638. God is not mocked.

  639. In verse 8,

  640. Paul develops this

  641. sowing and reaping

  642. even more fully.

  643. And he drills down

  644. on the motivational level.

  645. Do you remember in Galatians 5,

  646. 16 and 17,

  647. Matt preached this

  648. a couple weeks ago.

  649. What essentially Paul says there

  650. is that your person,

  651. if you're a Christian,

  652. your person

  653. is an incarnate war zone

  654. between the desires

  655. of the flesh

  656. and the desires

  657. of the Spirit.

  658. Because both simultaneously

  659. indwell you.

  660. The desires of the Spirit

  661. oppose the desires

  662. of the flesh

  663. and vice versa.

  664. The desires of the flesh

  665. are marked by selfishness.

  666. me.

  667. The desires of the flesh

  668. are relationally destructive.

  669. If you were to raise a banner

  670. over the desires of the flesh,

  671. it wouldn't be

  672. love your neighbor,

  673. it would be

  674. use your neighbor.

  675. The desires of the Spirit

  676. are not self-oriented,

  677. but others-oriented.

  678. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  679. The desires of the Spirit

  680. do not destroy relationships,

  681. they strengthen relationships.

  682. I mean,

  683. if you look

  684. at the fruit of the Spirit,

  685. the majority of the fruit

  686. of the Spirit

  687. has to do with

  688. one another.

  689. Strengthening the body

  690. of Christ.

  691. If you were to raise

  692. a banner over the desires

  693. of the Spirit,

  694. it would be

  695. love your neighbor.

  696. That's the picture

  697. in 5, 16, and 17.

  698. You are a war zone.

  699. But that's not the picture

  700. in verse 8.

  701. The picture

  702. that Paul paints

  703. is that you,

  704. Christian,

  705. are a living field

  706. waiting to be

  707. sowed and harvested.

  708. And there are

  709. two furrows

  710. in that field.

  711. Do you know

  712. what a furrow is?

  713. You know when you're

  714. driving out of the county

  715. in May

  716. and you see

  717. those rows of corn

  718. but they're just

  719. rows of dirt?

  720. That's a furrow.

  721. And every Christian

  722. you have two furrows

  723. that every financial decision

  724. you are planting

  725. into one of those furrows.

  726. A furrow of the flesh

  727. and a furrow of the Spirit.

  728. And when you put

  729. a financial choice

  730. into the furrow

  731. of the flesh,

  732. do you know

  733. what from that flesh

  734. you will reap?

  735. Corruption.

  736. rottenness.

  737. How do you like that

  738. for a harvest?

  739. But if

  740. by faith

  741. you decide

  742. to sow

  743. your resources

  744. into the furrow

  745. of the Spirit,

  746. do you know

  747. what you reap

  748. from the Spirit?

  749. You will reap

  750. eternal life.

  751. Fruit of the Spirit.

  752. It's future

  753. too.

  754. It's judgment.

  755. you will reap.

  756. The one who sows

  757. to his own flesh

  758. will from his flesh

  759. reap corruption

  760. but the one

  761. who sows

  762. to the Spirit

  763. who is

  764. walking by the Spirit

  765. when it comes

  766. to their finances.

  767. Who are being led

  768. by the Spirit

  769. when they come

  770. to their finances.

  771. Who are keeping

  772. in step with the Spirit

  773. in their finances.

  774. Who set their mind

  775. on the Spirit

  776. when it comes

  777. to their finances.

  778. That person

  779. they're investing

  780. in the Spirit

  781. and doing good

  782. to others.

  783. That's what we're aiming

  784. at Christ the King Church.

  785. Trusting in the Spirit

  786. sowing generously

  787. to Him

  788. for the good

  789. of others.

  790. what you do

  791. with your money

  792. reveals

  793. who you are

  794. ultimately trusting.

  795. And if you've been

  796. freed by Christ

  797. you've been freed

  798. from living

  799. for cash.

  800. Freed to live

  801. for Christ.

  802. So if you are

  803. sowing to the Spirit

  804. if you're

  805. giving

  806. to the support

  807. of this church

  808. if you're

  809. giving

  810. to help

  811. everyone

  812. you come

  813. into contact

  814. and need

  815. especially

  816. the household

  817. of faith

  818. what that

  819. evidence is

  820. is that

  821. you belong

  822. to God.

  823. You've been

  824. born again.

  825. You've been

  826. set free

  827. and eternity

  828. with God

  829. awaits.

  830. But it works

  831. both ways.

  832. If our sowing

  833. to the Spirit

  834. will from the Spirit

  835. reap eternal life

  836. then if we're

  837. sowing to the flesh

  838. from the flesh

  839. we will reap

  840. eternal corruption.

  841. it evidences

  842. who your ultimate

  843. trust is

  844. and whether

  845. you've been

  846. converted or not.

  847. So this warning

  848. is this

  849. don't deceive

  850. yourself

  851. God's not

  852. mocked

  853. hey

  854. he's going to

  855. judge

  856. someday.

  857. This reaping

  858. is an illusion

  859. to judgment

  860. that's why

  861. God is not

  862. mocked.

  863. He sees

  864. where you're

  865. sowing.

  866. He knows

  867. who you're

  868. ultimately

  869. trusting.

  870. That's why

  871. when you

  872. reap

  873. it will

  874. be just.

  875. Our giving

  876. matters to

  877. God.

  878. Martin Luther

  879. talked about it

  880. this way

  881. every Christian

  882. experiences

  883. three conversions

  884. the conversion

  885. of his heart

  886. the conversion

  887. of his mind

  888. and the conversion

  889. of his wallet.

  890. it evidences

  891. who you

  892. trust.

  893. Who you're

  894. living for.

  895. So be

  896. warned.

  897. Sow your

  898. money to

  899. the spirit

  900. not to

  901. the flesh

  902. for the

  903. good of

  904. others

  905. not for

  906. your own

  907. gain.

  908. Now

  909. let's look

  910. at some

  911. encouragement.

  912. Encouragement

  913. in our

  914. giving.

  915. We see

  916. this in

  917. verse 9

  918. and let us

  919. not grow

  920. weary of

  921. doing good

  922. for in due

  923. season we

  924. will reap

  925. if we

  926. do not

  927. give up.

  928. Don't

  929. give up

  930. in your

  931. giving.

  932. Don't

  933. give up.

  934. Now

  935. sometimes

  936. giving

  937. faithfully

  938. and sacrificially

  939. gets wearying

  940. and discouraging.

  941. Here's

  942. something that

  943. I'm not

  944. sure if

  945. you face.

  946. I know

  947. I am

  948. challenged

  949. by this

  950. from time

  951. to time.

  952. You're

  953. giving

  954. faithfully

  955. you're

  956. giving

  957. sacrificially

  958. and you

  959. start looking

  960. around and

  961. you realize

  962. that other

  963. people with

  964. the same

  965. kind of

  966. income as

  967. you have

  968. they're able

  969. to do all

  970. sorts of

  971. fun stuff

  972. but you're

  973. not able to

  974. do that

  975. fun stuff

  976. because

  977. you're

  978. giving

  979. sacrificially

  980. and so

  981. what happens

  982. as soon as

  983. you start

  984. looking around

  985. you start

  986. comparing

  987. yourself to

  988. others

  989. and the

  990. lifestyles

  991. people are

  992. living

  993. and you

  994. start to

  995. go

  996. fleshly.

  997. comparison

  998. can quickly

  999. result in

  1000. envy

  1001. and covetousness

  1002. and in

  1003. gratitude

  1004. and in

  1005. discontent.

  1006. Weariness

  1007. discouragement

  1008. leads to

  1009. giving up.

  1010. I mean if

  1011. you've started

  1012. some kind of

  1013. exercise

  1014. regiment with

  1015. a new year

  1016. and you're

  1017. not seeing

  1018. the results

  1019. you're going

  1020. to get

  1021. discouraged

  1022. and you're

  1023. going to be

  1024. like forget

  1025. about it.

  1026. If you're

  1027. more aware

  1028. of what

  1029. you're giving

  1030. up than

  1031. what you're

  1032. giving to

  1033. you're going

  1034. to be

  1035. discouraged

  1036. and you're

  1037. going to

  1038. want to

  1039. give up.

  1040. You know

  1041. what you

  1042. need a

  1043. healthy dose

  1044. of?

  1045. Look where

  1046. Paul goes.

  1047. And let us

  1048. not grow

  1049. weary of

  1050. doing good.

  1051. Antidote

  1052. for in

  1053. due season

  1054. we will

  1055. reap

  1056. judgment.

  1057. Paul's

  1058. antidote

  1059. to

  1060. discouragement

  1061. to encourage

  1062. you is to

  1063. say

  1064. judgment's

  1065. coming.

  1066. Everybody's

  1067. going to

  1068. stand before

  1069. God someday.

  1070. He's going

  1071. to hold us

  1072. accountable to

  1073. what we do

  1074. with our

  1075. finances.

  1076. He's going

  1077. to hold us

  1078. accountable to

  1079. what we do

  1080. with what

  1081. he gives

  1082. us.

  1083. So Paul

  1084. says don't

  1085. grow weary

  1086. in doing

  1087. good.

  1088. Don't give

  1089. up on your

  1090. giving because

  1091. in due

  1092. season we

  1093. will reap.

  1094. And what we've

  1095. just talked

  1096. about this

  1097. reaping is

  1098. this harvesting

  1099. judgment.

  1100. You remember

  1101. the parable of

  1102. the talents

  1103. in Matthew

  1104. 25?

  1105. A landowner

  1106. entrusts

  1107. servants,

  1108. three of

  1109. his servants

  1110. with some

  1111. money and

  1112. he leaves

  1113. and he

  1114. comes back

  1115. holds them

  1116. accountable

  1117. and two

  1118. of them get

  1119. a big return

  1120. one of them

  1121. just kind of

  1122. throws it in

  1123. the ground

  1124. and doesn't

  1125. get anything

  1126. for it.

  1127. And for

  1128. those who

  1129. invested their

  1130. talents wisely

  1131. do you remember

  1132. what the

  1133. master said

  1134. to them?

  1135. Well done

  1136. good and

  1137. faithful servant

  1138. enter the joy

  1139. of your master.

  1140. Could you

  1141. imagine this

  1142. someday?

  1143. If you're

  1144. growing weary

  1145. in your giving

  1146. imagine this

  1147. someday.

  1148. You're standing

  1149. before the

  1150. Lord and

  1151. he says

  1152. well done

  1153. good and

  1154. faithful giver.

  1155. Enter the

  1156. joy of your

  1157. master.

  1158. That will

  1159. help your

  1160. weariness.

  1161. That will

  1162. help your

  1163. discouragement.

  1164. It will put

  1165. strength in

  1166. your heart to

  1167. say I am

  1168. not going to

  1169. get sidetracked

  1170. by the

  1171. pleasures and

  1172. joys everybody

  1173. else is living

  1174. with their

  1175. extra money.

  1176. I'm going to

  1177. keep giving it

  1178. to what I know

  1179. is most important.

  1180. The advancement

  1181. of God's

  1182. word.

  1183. This due

  1184. season is

  1185. God's judgment

  1186. and it is

  1187. the antidote

  1188. for

  1189. discouragement.

  1190. At the

  1191. judgment God

  1192. will reward us.

  1193. We may see a

  1194. return now but

  1195. we'll definitely

  1196. see a reward

  1197. then.

  1198. That's what we

  1199. aim at.

  1200. So don't give

  1201. up in your

  1202. giving.

  1203. Be encouraged.

  1204. God's not

  1205. mocked.

  1206. You're

  1207. reward in

  1208. due time.

  1209. Keep giving.

  1210. And now the

  1211. conclusion.

  1212. Give generously.

  1213. Verse 10.

  1214. So then as we

  1215. have opportunity

  1216. let us do good

  1217. to everyone

  1218. especially to

  1219. those who are

  1220. of the household

  1221. of heaven.

  1222. There's the

  1223. do-gooding

  1224. again.

  1225. When Paul uses

  1226. the word so

  1227. then in verse

  1228. 10 he's kind

  1229. of wrapping

  1230. this up.

  1231. He's bringing

  1232. it to a

  1233. close.

  1234. And as he

  1235. says as we

  1236. have opportunity

  1237. that's very

  1238. helpful because

  1239. that informs

  1240. us that we're

  1241. just not to go

  1242. give money to

  1243. everybody everywhere

  1244. as we have

  1245. opportunity.

  1246. As opportunities

  1247. present themselves.

  1248. Be generous.

  1249. Now I just want

  1250. to help you think

  1251. about something

  1252. right now.

  1253. This as we

  1254. have opportunity

  1255. is actually

  1256. a limited

  1257. window.

  1258. It's in

  1259. between where

  1260. we're at

  1261. right now

  1262. and when

  1263. we stand

  1264. before our

  1265. God to give

  1266. an account.

  1267. In this

  1268. in-between

  1269. time we

  1270. have a

  1271. window of

  1272. opportunity to

  1273. be generous.

  1274. And Paul

  1275. focuses our

  1276. generosity on

  1277. two groups of

  1278. people.

  1279. See in verse

  1280. 10 he starts

  1281. by saying as

  1282. we have

  1283. opportunity let

  1284. us do good

  1285. to everyone.

  1286. That's

  1287. anyone.

  1288. Anyone who

  1289. comes to

  1290. you in

  1291. need.

  1292. Especially

  1293. non-Christians.

  1294. It includes

  1295. your extended

  1296. family.

  1297. If people are

  1298. coming to you

  1299. and they're

  1300. asking for some

  1301. kind of help

  1302. this passage

  1303. compels us to

  1304. help them

  1305. materially.

  1306. Now we've

  1307. got to be wise

  1308. and loving.

  1309. It's because

  1310. sometimes the

  1311. best thing for

  1312. you to do

  1313. for somebody

  1314. is not to

  1315. give them

  1316. cash.

  1317. So for

  1318. example we

  1319. have a policy

  1320. here at the

  1321. church.

  1322. We don't

  1323. hand cash to

  1324. people.

  1325. If someone

  1326. needs gas we

  1327. bring them

  1328. right over

  1329. here to the

  1330. station on the

  1331. corner and

  1332. fill them up.

  1333. If somebody

  1334. needs food we

  1335. bring them to

  1336. the grocery

  1337. store.

  1338. If someone

  1339. needs clothes

  1340. we bring them

  1341. to a clothes

  1342. store.

  1343. We go with

  1344. them and help

  1345. them meet their

  1346. material needs.

  1347. So we need to

  1348. exercise discretion

  1349. because when you

  1350. hand cash out

  1351. that can be

  1352. challenging for

  1353. some people.

  1354. But don't lose

  1355. sight of the

  1356. main point.

  1357. Because we've

  1358. been set free

  1359. by Christ and

  1360. we're walking

  1361. by the Spirit

  1362. we're to be

  1363. generous with

  1364. all people.

  1365. It's to mark

  1366. us.

  1367. So the first

  1368. group of people

  1369. here is everyone.

  1370. The second

  1371. group of people

  1372. is a subset of

  1373. the first.

  1374. especially those

  1375. of the household

  1376. of faith.

  1377. In New

  1378. Testament terms

  1379. a household

  1380. is a family.

  1381. And that word

  1382. especially think

  1383. of that as

  1384. prioritizing.

  1385. Do good to

  1386. everyone and

  1387. give priority to

  1388. your family of

  1389. faith.

  1390. Help everybody

  1391. but especially

  1392. your brothers and

  1393. sisters in Christ

  1394. which includes

  1395. your pastor.

  1396. as Christians

  1397. united together

  1398. as a family

  1399. walking by the

  1400. Spirit means

  1401. sowing to the

  1402. Spirit for the

  1403. good of one

  1404. another.

  1405. We have a

  1406. benevolence fund

  1407. as a church.

  1408. It literally

  1409. means a do

  1410. good fund to

  1411. the members of

  1412. our church.

  1413. But you

  1414. don't need to

  1415. wait for the

  1416. church to act

  1417. for you to do

  1418. good to others.

  1419. I want you

  1420. to notice that

  1421. this is not an

  1422. either or

  1423. proposition.

  1424. Either help

  1425. non-Christians

  1426. or help your

  1427. brothers and

  1428. sisters in Christ.

  1429. It's both

  1430. and.

  1431. Sow to the

  1432. Spirit for the

  1433. good of all

  1434. others but

  1435. prioritize your

  1436. brothers and

  1437. sisters in

  1438. Christ.

  1439. That's how

  1440. we're to live.

  1441. The conclusion

  1442. he draws is

  1443. be generous

  1444. to all.

  1445. So we've

  1446. seen the

  1447. command.

  1448. We've seen

  1449. the warning.

  1450. We've seen

  1451. some encouragement

  1452. and now the

  1453. conclusion.

  1454. Sow your money

  1455. to the Spirit

  1456. for the good

  1457. of others.

  1458. Now some

  1459. diagnostic

  1460. questions.

  1461. Have you

  1462. forgotten how

  1463. generous God

  1464. has been to

  1465. you?

  1466. have you

  1467. forgotten

  1468. that God

  1469. is the

  1470. giver of

  1471. all things?

  1472. He's the

  1473. greatest of

  1474. all givers

  1475. and he's

  1476. given the

  1477. greatest gift

  1478. at the

  1479. greatest expense

  1480. so that

  1481. you could

  1482. be in

  1483. relationship

  1484. with him.

  1485. Never

  1486. forget that.

  1487. That is a

  1488. tremendous

  1489. source of

  1490. joy in

  1491. your giving.

  1492. It's a

  1493. source of

  1494. gratitude.

  1495. gratitude.

  1496. God loves

  1497. a cheerful

  1498. giver.

  1499. Second

  1500. question.

  1501. How can

  1502. you get

  1503. these

  1504. categories of

  1505. sowing to

  1506. the flesh

  1507. and sowing to

  1508. the Spirit

  1509. on your

  1510. mind when

  1511. you're using

  1512. your debit

  1513. card?

  1514. So wouldn't

  1515. it be good

  1516. if you

  1517. cruise over

  1518. to some

  1519. kind of

  1520. store and

  1521. you're like

  1522. I got a

  1523. hankering to

  1524. buy something

  1525. and you're

  1526. about to

  1527. kind of

  1528. put your

  1529. credit card

  1530. through the

  1531. swiper thing

  1532. or the

  1533. click thing

  1534. and you're

  1535. like hmm

  1536. I wonder

  1537. is what I'm

  1538. about to do

  1539. is this

  1540. sowing to

  1541. my flesh

  1542. or sowing

  1543. to the

  1544. Spirit?

  1545. Now that's

  1546. maturity.

  1547. That's walking

  1548. by the Spirit.

  1549. That's growth.

  1550. That's taking

  1551. steps.

  1552. That's health.

  1553. One of the

  1554. ways you can

  1555. do that is

  1556. by just

  1557. simply memorizing

  1558. Galatians 6,

  1559. 7, and 8.

  1560. Get it on

  1561. your mind

  1562. so that the

  1563. Spirit can

  1564. use it

  1565. in your

  1566. mind.

  1567. Directing

  1568. your steps.

  1569. Here's a

  1570. third diagnostic

  1571. question.

  1572. Have you

  1573. been presuming

  1574. have you

  1575. been presuming

  1576. on others

  1577. to be

  1578. financially

  1579. responsible

  1580. for the

  1581. gospel ministry

  1582. of this

  1583. church?

  1584. Have you

  1585. been assuming

  1586. other people

  1587. will take

  1588. care of it?

  1589. What would

  1590. you call

  1591. that?

  1592. If you

  1593. have been

  1594. what would

  1595. be a

  1596. wise and

  1597. good

  1598. next step?

  1599. of repentance

  1600. and faith.

  1601. For any

  1602. change to

  1603. take place,

  1604. it starts

  1605. with godly

  1606. sorrow,

  1607. godly

  1608. repentance.

  1609. Lasting

  1610. change only

  1611. happens when

  1612. it begins

  1613. with godly

  1614. repentance.

  1615. And so that

  1616. might just

  1617. mean for you

  1618. saying,

  1619. all right,

  1620. I haven't

  1621. been giving

  1622. as I ought,

  1623. I'll take

  1624. a step.

  1625. Now,

  1626. I was going

  1627. to include

  1628. some practical

  1629. steps.

  1630. If you'd

  1631. like some

  1632. practical steps,

  1633. please,

  1634. talk to

  1635. me after

  1636. the service.

  1637. But there's

  1638. one more

  1639. diagnostic

  1640. question that

  1641. I want to

  1642. ask.

  1643. Let's say

  1644. that you

  1645. have been

  1646. faithfully

  1647. giving and

  1648. sacrificially

  1649. giving here

  1650. at Christ

  1651. the King

  1652. Church.

  1653. And you're

  1654. tempted to

  1655. look around

  1656. you and

  1657. say,

  1658. huh,

  1659. I wonder

  1660. if they're

  1661. giving.

  1662. Huh,

  1663. I wonder

  1664. what they're

  1665. doing with

  1666. their money.

  1667. if you're

  1668. being tempted

  1669. out of

  1670. some kind

  1671. of position

  1672. of arrival

  1673. of what

  1674. other people

  1675. are giving,

  1676. let me just

  1677. redirect your

  1678. gaze to

  1679. the first

  1680. question.

  1681. Have you

  1682. forgotten

  1683. of what God

  1684. has done

  1685. for you?

  1686. What he's

  1687. given for

  1688. you?

  1689. we're all

  1690. going to

  1691. give an

  1692. account

  1693. someday.

  1694. So,

  1695. let's

  1696. sow

  1697. to the

  1698. Spirit.

  1699. Sow

  1700. what

  1701. means

  1702. we have

  1703. to the

  1704. Spirit

  1705. for the

  1706. good of

  1707. others

  1708. starting

  1709. with this

  1710. church

  1711. and moving

  1712. out.

  1713. God be

  1714. praised

  1715. and may

  1716. God be

  1717. exalted.

  1718. Let's pray.

  1719. God in

  1720. heaven,

  1721. we thank

  1722. you so

  1723. much for

  1724. the money

  1725. you've

  1726. entrusted

  1727. to us.

  1728. You do

  1729. say in

  1730. your word

  1731. that we're

  1732. to be

  1733. faithful with

  1734. a little

  1735. and then

  1736. you will

  1737. entrust us

  1738. more.

  1739. God,

  1740. would you

  1741. help us

  1742. to be

  1743. faithful,

  1744. to walk

  1745. by your

  1746. Spirit in

  1747. our generosity

  1748. with others.

  1749. God,

  1750. thank you so

  1751. much that we

  1752. as a people

  1753. can do this

  1754. together,

  1755. walking

  1756. together in

  1757. the power

  1758. of your

  1759. Spirit,

  1760. to be

  1761. generous

  1762. to all.

  1763. God,

  1764. thank you so

  1765. much for the

  1766. faithful givers

  1767. in this

  1768. congregation

  1769. already.

  1770. Would you

  1771. help us

  1772. to excel

  1773. still more?

  1774. God,

  1775. to give

  1776. freely and

  1777. sacrificially

  1778. to what you

  1779. are doing

  1780. for the glory

  1781. of your name

  1782. and the good

  1783. of others.

  1784. It's in Jesus'

  1785. name we pray.

  1786. Amen.
