  1. Well, later this afternoon, there is a bit of a competition.

  2. The Green Bay Packers will square off against the San Francisco 49ers.

  3. And if the Green Bay Packers should win, the state of Wisconsin will be boasting.

  4. Yes, the NFC title is on the line and rights to the Super Bowl.

  5. So if the Packers should win, Packer fans everywhere will have boasting rights to boast in their team,

  6. to boast that Aaron Rodgers is not a wash-up, to boast in their new coach, to boast in the win,

  7. to boast in the program, to boast.

  8. Here's what you need about boasting.

  9. When you boast in something, you're putting your present trust in that.

  10. When you boast in something, you're putting your future hope in that.

  11. When you boast in something, it's what defines you.

  12. When you boast in something, it's that in which you celebrate.

  13. What I'm getting at is your ultimate boast.

  14. Now, we've reached the end of the book of Galatians.

  15. And this is not the last sermon, though it's the last section I'll be expositing.

  16. We've got one more sermon next week, which is going to be a retro view of the book of Galatians.

  17. It's kind of like what we walk away with.

  18. But all throughout the book of Galatians, it's been about the one true gospel of Jesus Christ.

  19. And how the cross of Christ alone frees us from slavery to the flesh to live by the Spirit for the glory of God.

  20. So this morning's passage, which just read, Galatians 6, 11 through 18.

  21. What you need to understand here is that Paul is drawing this letter to a conclusion.

  22. And it culminates in a comparison.

  23. A comparison of boasts.

  24. Boasting in the flesh.

  25. Boasting in the cross.

  26. And this comparison between boasting is intended to call all of us to boast not in the flesh, but in the cross of Jesus Christ alone.

  27. So I can summarize this passage in seven words.

  28. We must boast in the cross alone.

  29. We must boast in the cross alone.

  30. And here's how we're going to move forward in walking through this passage.

  31. I want to answer a general question first.

  32. What is this boasting that the Apostle Paul is talking about?

  33. And then I want to help us understand what is this boasting in the flesh that he's talking about?

  34. And then I want to land us in what is this boasting in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ?

  35. And why we must boast in the cross alone.

  36. So what does Paul mean by boasting?

  37. Well, let me frame it for you.

  38. Because the verses 13 and 14 in which he actually talks about boasting, that's framed by what he says in verse 11 and verse 17.

  39. So let me help you show you where this boasting stuff comes in the context stuff.

  40. Notice in verse 11, Paul says, see with what large letters I'm writing to you with my own hand.

  41. There's some speculation on what these large letters are.

  42. Maybe it's because Paul, his eyesight wasn't the best.

  43. Maybe the ailment of Galatians 4.13.

  44. It could be the equivalent of us writing an email and putting something in bold italicized print to emphasize something.

  45. What the big clue is when he says, I write to you these things with my own hand.

  46. You know, each of us has our own handwriting.

  47. It's like our own fingerprint, right?

  48. It's unique to us.

  49. And so what Paul is saying here is saying, hey, this is me that's writing you.

  50. This letter's from me.

  51. The apostle Paul, the one called by God.

  52. Galatians 1 and 2.

  53. The apostle to the Gentiles, given the authority from the risen Christ.

  54. So it's an authenticator of who's writing this letter.

  55. And then in 6.17, we read this.

  56. From now on, let no one cause me trouble.

  57. He's writing this letter.

  58. It's going to be distributed to the churches in Galatia.

  59. And in these churches, this letter would have been read publicly.

  60. And so all those people who are giving him trouble, and what I mean by that is they're teaching a different gospel.

  61. They're saying that you can believe in Jesus just as long as if you're a guy, you're circumcised,

  62. and make sure you're observing the Jewish kosher dietary laws, making sure you're hitting all the Jewish holidays.

  63. So if you believe in Jesus and do all that stuff, you do those works, you're good with God.

  64. It's adding to the gospel.

  65. And it's not the gospel.

  66. And so Paul knows that, so he's writing this letter, and he's aiming at those people at this point.

  67. He says, from now on, let no one cause me trouble.

  68. It's like a cease and desist letter.

  69. Stop it.

  70. And then he gives the reason.

  71. For I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

  72. Literally, the stigmata of Jesus.

  73. Those who boasted in the flesh, they did so to avoid persecution.

  74. Verse 12.

  75. Paul boasted in the cross alone, and he suffered for it.

  76. You know, these marks are actually referenced to scars.

  77. Scars.

  78. If you look at 2 Corinthians 11, you get a sense of what Paul suffered for proclaiming the cross of Jesus Christ alone.

  79. Scars tell stories.

  80. I've got scars on my body.

  81. When someone asks me about them, I'm like, oh yeah, I've got a story behind that one.

  82. The scars on Paul's body are the marks of Jesus.

  83. The cost he endured to proclaim the cross of Christ alone.

  84. It's another way of authenticating his ministry.

  85. Of legitimizing his apostleship.

  86. So in between these authenticating comments of the apostle Paul at the end of the book of Galatians,

  87. he then starts talking about boasting.

  88. A contrast of boasting.

  89. I tend to think about this as this.

  90. Paul's wrapping up the book.

  91. It's kind of like Joshua 24, where Joshua says, okay, Israel, the old Israel, Israel, choose this day whom you're going to serve.

  92. Either the gods of the land or Yahweh.

  93. As for me and my house, we'll serve the Lord.

  94. Paul is saying, choose this day whom you will boast.

  95. You're going to boast in the flesh.

  96. You're going to boast in the cross of Christ.

  97. And Paul says, as for me and God's new people, the Israel of God, we will boast in the cross.

  98. So what does Paul mean by boasting?

  99. Well, on the most basic sense, boasting is a kind of speaking about something, right?

  100. But it's a particular kind of speaking about something.

  101. Boasting is verbally expressing your confidence in someone or something's ability to win.

  102. Or to be the best.

  103. Or to do what nothing or no one else can do.

  104. My team's the best.

  105. It's kind of boasting.

  106. My neighborhood's the best.

  107. My school's the best.

  108. My political party's the best.

  109. My race is the best.

  110. My gender's the best.

  111. My religious practices are the best.

  112. Boasting is a complex thing.

  113. Here's why.

  114. When you boast in something, you're actually putting your present trust in that something.

  115. It's the governing reality of your life.

  116. As far as that thing goes, so goes your happiness.

  117. But your boasting is not simply just your present trusting in something.

  118. Your boasting is always a future trusting.

  119. A future faith.

  120. It's what we call hope.

  121. You're boasting in something with a hope that it's going to deliver down the line.

  122. Have you heard people say, I have no problems with science.

  123. I believe God has used science for great good in humanity.

  124. But when people say things like, hey, science will eventually figure everything out.

  125. People are actually putting their hope in human reason and ingenuity.

  126. It's future faith.

  127. And it's not just boasting as a future faith, a hope.

  128. When you boast in something, it defines you.

  129. Okay, if you are rooting for the Packers tonight, you're like, go Pack, go!

  130. You are a Packers fan!

  131. It defines you!

  132. What you boast in defines you.

  133. It shapes your identity.

  134. It's how you think about yourself.

  135. When you are driving in your car and you're looking at bumper stickers, maybe you should think of them more as boasting stickers.

  136. It's what people are putting their trust in, their hope in, their identity in.

  137. It's what they even celebrate.

  138. So boasting is present trust, future hope, who you are, identity, and it's what you celebrate.

  139. It's what you want to yell about.

  140. It's what you get worked up over.

  141. It's what you sing about.

  142. It's what you've got to tell other people about.

  143. Do you remember Jesus' words in Matthew 12?

  144. Jesus is explaining to his disciples how to discern the difference between an evil person and a good person.

  145. Jesus uses a tree illustration.

  146. A tree is known by its fruit, either good fruit or evil fruit.

  147. And Jesus says, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

  148. Words are fruit of a heart at its root in what you trust.

  149. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth boasts.

  150. What you trust in, what you hope in, what defines you, what you celebrate.

  151. That's what Paul is getting at with this word boasting.

  152. It's big.

  153. It's complex.

  154. It's not just words.

  155. It's worship.

  156. You boast in what you worship.

  157. So, when it comes to boasting, we've got to be asking the right question.

  158. To boast or not to boast is not the right question.

  159. Because everybody is boasting in something.

  160. Everyone is trusting in something.

  161. Everyone is hoping in something.

  162. Everyone is being defined by the words of something.

  163. Everyone wants to celebrate something.

  164. We're all boasters because we're all worshipers.

  165. So, the question is not whether you should boast or not.

  166. The question is, what are you presently boasting in?

  167. And is it worth it?

  168. And what we're going to see in this passage is that Paul says all of humanity basically has two options to boast in.

  169. You're either going to boast in the flesh or you're going to boast in the cross.

  170. What is your ultimate boast?

  171. It's not an either or.

  172. It's not a both and.

  173. It is an either or.

  174. We must boast in the cross alone.

  175. So, what is this boasting in the flesh then?

  176. Well, that's where 12 verses 12 and 13 helps.

  177. And as I unpack this, I want to help you see the motive and the method and the manner of this boasting.

  178. But before we get there, I just want to remind you what Paul means by the flesh.

  179. Because in the book of Galatians, he uses that word flesh in at least two ways.

  180. Remember in Galatians 5, 16 and 17, Matt preached this a few weeks ago.

  181. What the flesh is there is this internal self-oriented power that seeks to express itself in desires like strife.

  182. In envy, jealousy, fits of rage.

  183. We see all the works of the flesh spelled out in verses 19 through 21 of chapter 5.

  184. And basically, if there's a banner that you raise over the flesh, it would be this.

  185. It's not love your neighbor.

  186. It's use your neighbor.

  187. Use your neighbor for selfish gain.

  188. The flesh is in opposition to the Holy Spirit who's seeking to work in us to love our neighbor unto loving God.

  189. So, the first use of flesh is this internal power that is self-oriented that is seeking to use our neighbors.

  190. But then there's the second use.

  191. And the second use of the word flesh shows up in our passage.

  192. Galatians chapter 6, verses 12 and 14.

    Galatians 6:12

  193. We read, it is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised.

  194. Verse 14, but far be it for me to boast except in the cross of Jesus Christ.

  195. I just got lost there.

  196. In verse 13, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

  197. In this passage, flesh is tied to circumcision.

  198. It's literally referencing the foreskin of a male's sexual organ.

  199. In Galatians, the false preachers were saying, teaching that in order to be saved, male Gentiles who believed in Jesus needed to have their foreskins removed.

  200. They needed to become Jews before they could become Christians.

  201. And regardless if you were a man or woman, you needed to observe Jewish dietary laws and the Jewish holy day calendar.

  202. And it also sounds like these false teachers were downplaying the cross of Christ and emphasizing obedience to circumcision and eating kosher and observing a calendar so that they wouldn't be persecuted for the cross.

  203. Here's what I want to help you to see.

  204. This emphasis on the external flesh of circumcision is just an outworking of that internal power of the flesh within.

  205. They go hand in hand.

  206. And that's where we see it played out in motive, method, and manner.

  207. This boasting in the flesh, what motivates that?

  208. Well, we see it in verse 12.

  209. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised.

  210. A good showing.

  211. Who do you think they want to make a good showing to?

  212. They want to be man pleasers.

  213. They want to impress those who are observing of Jewish descent.

  214. And they want to impress those people.

  215. It's the very thing that Paul himself was accused of in chapter 1, verse 10, ironically.

  216. Those who are boasting in the flesh were seeking to impress others, not God.

  217. That's the good showing.

  218. The motive of these boasters in the flesh was to impress man.

  219. When people's opinion is more important than God's opinion.

  220. But not just motives of the flesh.

  221. We see method in verse 12.

  222. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would force you to be circumcised.

  223. Force.

  224. If you flip back to Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  225. In verses 2 and 3 we read this.

  226. I went up because of a revelation and set before them, though privately before those who seemed influential,

  227. the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles in order to make sure I was not running or had run in vain.

  228. Verse 3, but even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.

  229. Look at chapter 2, verse 14.

  230. But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel,

  231. I said to Cephas, Peter, before them all,

  232. If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew,

  233. how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?

  234. One of the classic symptoms of the flesh is human manipulation.

  235. Human forcing things to happen.

  236. It's not loving your neighbor.

  237. It's using your neighbor in order to impress other people.

  238. This motives and method, they go hand in hand, it turns out.

  239. This method is kind of summarized, might makes right.

  240. Verse 13, we see the manner.

  241. We read this.

  242. For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law,

  243. but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.

  244. For even those who are circumcised, speaking of those who are the false teachers,

  245. who have bought into this false teaching,

  246. they do not themselves keep the law.

  247. Do you see what Paul is saying?

  248. They're hypocrites.

  249. They're not in it for God.

  250. They're in it for themselves.

  251. They're forcing things to happen.

  252. And they themselves are not seeking to keep the law.

  253. And what we read earlier is to love your neighbor as yourself.

  254. They're saying, hey, do as I say, not as I do.

  255. Let's just make people look like they belong to us.

  256. So these people who are boasting in the flesh, literally the foreskins,

  257. were operating out of the flesh.

  258. They were seeking to impress man by using methods of force

  259. that were kind of done out of hypocrisy.

  260. Their boasting in the flesh is a trusting in the flesh,

  261. a hoping in the flesh, a being defined by the flesh,

  262. a celebration of the flesh.

  263. And so let me just ask you this question.

  264. What does circumcision accomplish?

  265. In God's economy of things.

  266. What does eating kosher accomplish in God's economy of things?

  267. What does observing the right Jewish holidays accomplish in God's economy?

  268. Do they save?

  269. No, they do not.

  270. No, none of these has any saving merit in God's eyes.

  271. So boasting in the flesh are just these outworkings of the flesh.

  272. And it's not by might, not by power, but by my spirit, says the Lord.

  273. And boasting in the flesh continues today.

  274. It's not a first century Jewish religious context kind of a thing.

  275. Motives to seek approval of people,

  276. methods of manipulation and force,

  277. manner of hypocrisy.

  278. We see it played out on the political scene in our country.

  279. We see it played out with social issues.

  280. We say it played out in educational frameworks.

  281. We even say it played out in our parenting.

  282. We're more concerned with what people think about us

  283. than doing things for the praise of God.

  284. It's like requiring foreskins,

  285. or requiring to eat kosher,

  286. or observing Jewish holy days.

  287. None of these things can save anyone.

  288. None of them gets you right with a hold of God.

  289. Do you know what all this boasting in the flesh has in common?

  290. It's man-centered.

  291. It's trusting in human agency.

  292. Trusting in man.

  293. Not God.

  294. Hoping in man.

  295. Not God.

  296. Being defined by what man says.

  297. Not what God says.

  298. It's celebrating man.

  299. Apart from celebrating God.

  300. Boasting in the flesh

  301. reflects a man-centered approach to life.

  302. It's worldliness.

  303. A form of godliness,

  304. but denying its power.

  305. That's why boasting in the flesh

  306. is completely incompatible

  307. with boasting in the cross.

  308. It's not both and.

  309. It is either or.

  310. Who you ultimately trust.

  311. We must not be boasting in the flesh,

  312. brothers and sisters.

  313. We must boast in the cross alone.

  314. And it's to that end

  315. I want to aim us

  316. and start wrapping up this sermon

  317. in verses 14 through 16.

  318. In this passage,

  319. in these verses,

  320. Paul essentially gives us

  321. three reasons why

  322. we must boast

  323. in the cross of Jesus Christ alone.

  324. I want to help you understand

  325. what it means

  326. to boast in the cross.

  327. Why we boast in the cross.

  328. And we boast in the cross

  329. because of what the cross

  330. has accomplished.

  331. Now,

  332. before I get there,

  333. I just want to help you

  334. understand something.

  335. We don't realize

  336. how crazy that sounds.

  337. In verse 14,

  338. Paul says,

  339. but far be it for me

  340. to boast except

  341. in the cross

  342. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  343. We're so used

  344. to hearing cross talk.

  345. We forget

  346. how scandalous it is.

  347. And so let me try

  348. to help you

  349. kind of get a sense

  350. of how scandalous

  351. this sounds

  352. in the first century.

  353. In the first century,

  354. a cross was the instrument

  355. of Roman capital punishment.

  356. So in the modern era,

  357. it would have been

  358. the equivalent

  359. of a firing squad

  360. or the hangman's noose

  361. or the electric

  362. chair.

  363. All different forms

  364. of capital punishment.

  365. So,

  366. could you imagine

  367. someone coming up

  368. to you

  369. wearing a silver chain

  370. with an electric chair

  371. pendant around their neck

  372. saying,

  373. man,

  374. I got to tell you

  375. about this guy

  376. that died

  377. in the electric chair

  378. for me.

  379. Have you heard the song

  380. When I Survey?

  381. When I Survey

  382. the Wondrous Cross?

  383. When I Survey

  384. the Electric Chair.

  385. See how crazy

  386. that sounds?

  387. How scandalous

  388. that is?

  389. It's like Paul saying,

  390. but far be it

  391. for me to boast

  392. except in the electric chair

  393. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  394. The cross,

  395. like the electric chair,

  396. was a shameful

  397. way to die.

  398. Cursed is anyone

  399. who's hanged on a tree.

  400. But we must boast

  401. in the cross

  402. because of the one

  403. who died on the cross.

  404. Did you see

  405. the pile up of titles?

  406. But far be it

  407. for me to boast

  408. except in the cross

  409. of our Lord Jesus

  410. the Christ.

  411. God in the flesh.

  412. He died on the cross

  413. bearing God's curse

  414. for our sinfulness.

  415. All of our living

  416. out of our flesh

  417. opposed to God.

  418. He died for it all.

  419. His death and resurrection

  420. accomplished what no human

  421. or group of humans

  422. could ever do.

  423. And that's why

  424. we boast in it.

  425. And that's why

  426. Paul gives us

  427. three reasons

  428. from this text

  429. of why we should be

  430. boasting in the cross alone.

  431. So let me help you

  432. see that.

  433. In verse 14

  434. we read this.

  435. But far be it

  436. for me to boast

  437. except in the cross

  438. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  439. by which the world

  440. has been crucified

  441. to me and I

  442. to the world.

  443. The first reason

  444. why we boast

  445. in the cross

  446. is that the world

  447. has been crucified

  448. to us

  449. and us

  450. to the world.

  451. Do you remember

  452. Galatians 2.20?

  453. It's one of my

  454. all-time favorite verses.

  455. Paul says,

  456. I've been crucified

  457. with Christ.

  458. It's no longer

  459. I who live

  460. but Christ

  461. who lives in me

  462. and the life

  463. I now live

  464. in the flesh.

  465. I live by faith

  466. in the Son of God

  467. who loved me

  468. and gave himself

  469. up for me.

  470. He died on the cross

  471. because he loved me

  472. and gave himself

  473. up for me.

  474. Paul fully believed.

  475. He was completely convinced

  476. convinced that he himself

  477. was co-crucified

  478. with Christ

  479. on the cross.

  480. That's what that's

  481. getting at.

  482. He was united

  483. with Christ

  484. in Christ's cross work.

  485. And the same

  486. is true

  487. with us

  488. who believe

  489. in Christ alone

  490. for our salvation.

  491. The very moment

  492. you first believed

  493. in what Christ

  494. had done for you,

  495. God united you

  496. to Christ

  497. in his death

  498. and resurrection.

  499. And one of the results

  500. we've already looked at

  501. in 524

  502. and those who belong

  503. to Christ Jesus

  504. have crucified

  505. the flesh

  506. with its passions

  507. and its desires.

  508. Now why am I telling you this?

  509. Because we're talking

  510. about the world, right?

  511. Here's why.

  512. The world

  513. in this context

  514. is describing

  515. a community

  516. of human beings.

  517. a community

  518. of human beings

  519. who have not

  520. been united

  521. to Christ.

  522. And because

  523. they haven't been

  524. united to Christ

  525. their passions

  526. and desires

  527. of their flesh

  528. has not been

  529. crucified either.

  530. So they are

  531. ruled

  532. by their passions

  533. and desires

  534. of their flesh.

  535. So the passions

  536. and desires

  537. of the flesh

  538. of every person

  539. of the world

  540. controls

  541. their being.

  542. And they boast

  543. in the flesh.

  544. The flesh

  545. the internal

  546. power

  547. of selfishness

  548. that exerts

  549. itself

  550. cannot

  551. put to death

  552. the flesh.

  553. So you need

  554. to think of

  555. the world

  556. as all of humanity

  557. being ruled

  558. by the passions

  559. and desires

  560. of the flesh.

  561. It's like

  562. Galatians 5

  563. 19-21

  564. all those

  565. 15 works

  566. of the flesh

  567. multiplied

  568. and spread out

  569. across billions

  570. of people

  571. on this planet

  572. transcending race

  573. transcending culture

  574. religion

  575. and gender.

  576. That's the world

  577. and it creates

  578. a current

  579. of ungodliness.

  580. The world

  581. exerts

  582. a fleshly

  583. influence

  584. not towards God

  585. but away

  586. from Him.

  587. the world

  588. way of doing

  589. things

  590. normalizes

  591. a use

  592. your neighbor

  593. approach

  594. to life.

  595. Only being

  596. united to

  597. Christ

  598. in His

  599. crucifixion

  600. will put

  601. to death

  602. the world's

  603. fleshly

  604. hold on you.

  605. I hope you're

  606. starting to understand

  607. that the cross

  608. of Christ

  609. has set us

  610. free

  611. from living

  612. for the world

  613. from

  614. worldliness

  615. a culture

  616. characterized

  617. by

  618. what we read

  619. in Galatians 5

  620. 19-21

  621. the cross

  622. has

  623. freed us

  624. from the world's

  625. hold on us

  626. and our

  627. allure

  628. to the world.

  629. Now if you

  630. struggle with

  631. worldliness

  632. and I know

  633. I do

  634. you need

  635. to remember

  636. and believe

  637. in the

  638. finished

  639. work

  640. of Jesus

  641. Christ

  642. and that

  643. you

  644. have been

  645. co-crucified

  646. with Christ

  647. and when

  648. you do that

  649. you start

  650. to realize

  651. the world

  652. no longer

  653. owns you.

  654. Being crucified

  655. to the world

  656. does not mean

  657. removing ourselves

  658. from the world

  659. that's the whole

  660. point of Jesus

  661. praying for His

  662. disciples in John 17

  663. that God would not

  664. take them out of the world

  665. but He would

  666. set them apart

  667. in the world

  668. by sanctifying them

  669. with God's word

  670. the truth

  671. and so think about it

  672. this way

  673. here's what happened

  674. the cross

  675. called us out

  676. of the world

  677. so the cross

  678. has made it possible

  679. for us to be

  680. in the world

  681. but not of the world

  682. to proclaim to the world

  683. that Jesus is the Savior

  684. of the world

  685. that's the first reason

  686. why

  687. we boast

  688. in the cross

  689. why we trust

  690. in it

  691. why it

  692. it defines

  693. our hope

  694. it defines us

  695. we celebrate

  696. the cross

  697. because the cross

  698. has made it possible

  699. for us to be

  700. in the world

  701. but not of the world

  702. to proclaim

  703. Christ

  704. to the world

  705. only the cross

  706. can do that

  707. we must boast

  708. in the cross alone

  709. the second reason

  710. why we must boast

  711. in the cross alone

  712. you see in verse 15

  713. for neither circumcision

  714. counts for anything

  715. nor uncircumcision

  716. but a new creation

  717. it's only through the cross

  718. that we can be

  719. new creatures

  720. of a new creation

  721. Galatians 5 25 says

  722. if we live by the Spirit

  723. let us keep in step

  724. with the Spirit

  725. according to God's word

  726. when you believe

  727. in Jesus

  728. for the first time

  729. you

  730. are united to Christ

  731. in his death

  732. and resurrection

  733. and all of his

  734. resurrection power

  735. and life

  736. given it to you

  737. so you are considered

  738. in God's eyes

  739. a new creation

  740. the old is gone

  741. the new has come

  742. all of your sin

  743. paid for

  744. now you are right

  745. with God forever

  746. 2 Corinthians 5 17

  747. says therefore

  748. if anyone is in Christ

  749. united to Christ

  750. belonging to Christ

  751. he's a new creation

  752. the old way

  753. use your neighbor

  754. is gone

  755. the new way

  756. love your neighbor

  757. for the glory of God

  758. has come

  759. in Christ

  760. the old flesh ruled

  761. Mike Salvati

  762. that boasts

  763. in the flesh

  764. has been crucified

  765. and the new creation

  766. Mike Salvati

  767. has come

  768. with a new heart

  769. a new boast

  770. new motives

  771. new method

  772. new manner

  773. the cross

  774. of Christ

  775. of Jesus

  776. it not only

  777. just makes

  778. individuals new

  779. at the cross

  780. a whole new

  781. creation began

  782. what God is doing

  783. now is this

  784. he is making

  785. new creatures

  786. out of old

  787. sinners

  788. on the old

  789. earth

  790. but what

  791. the cross

  792. inaugurated

  793. will one day

  794. come complete

  795. full

  796. culminate

  797. when Jesus

  798. comes back

  799. and he

  800. recreates

  801. everything

  802. behold

  803. Revelation 21

  804. 5

  805. I am making

  806. all things

  807. new

  808. it's all

  809. by God's

  810. powerful grace

  811. circumcision

  812. doesn't do that

  813. so if you think

  814. that having your

  815. foreskin removed

  816. or eating right

  817. foods

  818. or observing

  819. the right days

  820. or doing the right

  821. Christian things

  822. don't yell at your

  823. kids

  824. don't swear

  825. read your Bible

  826. pray before meals

  827. give regularly

  828. if you think

  829. any of these

  830. works

  831. can make

  832. you new

  833. in God's

  834. eyes

  835. you are terribly

  836. mistaken

  837. it's only through

  838. the cross

  839. that does that

  840. gives you new

  841. life

  842. only the cross

  843. can make

  844. a dead

  845. sinner

  846. into a new

  847. living

  848. creature

  849. of the new

  850. creation

  851. that's the

  852. second reason

  853. why we boast

  854. in the cross

  855. the cross

  856. alone is the

  857. source of

  858. life

  859. the third

  860. reason

  861. why

  862. we must

  863. boast

  864. in the cross

  865. alone

  866. is an

  867. outworking

  868. of the new

  869. creation

  870. of what

  871. the cross

  872. has inaugurated

  873. we read it

  874. in verse 16

  875. and so

  876. for all who

  877. walk in this

  878. rule

  879. by this

  880. rule

  881. the new

  882. creation

  883. rule

  884. what's most

  885. important is

  886. the new

  887. creation

  888. for all who

  889. walk by

  890. this new

  891. creation

  892. mindset

  893. peace and

  894. mercy upon

  895. them and

  896. upon the

  897. Israel of

  898. God

  899. here's what

  900. Paul's saying

  901. if the world

  902. is the

  903. community of

  904. those ruled

  905. by the flesh

  906. who boast

  907. in the flesh

  908. then the

  909. Israel of

  910. God

  911. 616

  912. is the

  913. new

  914. creation

  915. community

  916. of those

  917. co-crucified

  918. in the

  919. cross

  920. walking

  921. by the

  922. spirit

  923. who boast

  924. in the

  925. cross

  926. it's the

  927. church

  928. in verse

  929. 16

  930. Paul calls

  931. the Israel

  932. of God

  933. all who

  934. walk

  935. by this

  936. rule

  937. for neither

  938. circumcision

  939. counts for

  940. anything nor

  941. uncircumcision

  942. but a new

  943. creation

  944. that's what

  945. matters most

  946. being a new

  947. creation

  948. it's only an

  949. act of God

  950. neither

  951. circumcision

  952. counts for

  953. anything or

  954. uncircumcision

  955. so those

  956. who are of

  957. the new

  958. creation

  959. are the

  960. Israel of

  961. God

  962. and that's

  963. been Paul's

  964. argument all

  965. throughout the

  966. book of

  967. Galatians

  968. those

  969. who put

  970. their

  971. faith in

  972. the finished

  973. work of

  974. Christ

  975. anyone

  976. who puts

  977. their faith

  978. in the

  979. finished

  980. work of

  981. Christ

  982. are justified

  983. those

  984. Jews and

  985. Gentiles who

  986. trust in

  987. the finished

  988. work of

  989. Christ

  990. they are

  991. the offspring

  992. of Abraham

  993. and recipients

  994. of God's

  995. promised

  996. blessing

  997. Galatians

  998. 3

  999. pointing back

  1000. to Genesis

  1001. 12

  1002. they're the

  1003. Israel of

  1004. God

  1005. those

  1006. who trust

  1007. in Christ's

  1008. cross work

  1009. alone

  1010. they are the

  1011. righteous who

  1012. shall live by

  1013. faith

  1014. Hebrews 2

  1015. quote in

  1016. Galatians 3

  1017. Habakkuk 2

  1018. quote in

  1019. Galatians 3

  1020. those who

  1021. trust in

  1022. Christ's

  1023. cross work

  1024. alone

  1025. are the

  1026. true children

  1027. of promise

  1028. the citizens

  1029. of the

  1030. heavenly

  1031. Jerusalem

  1032. above

  1033. Galatians 4

  1034. they're the

  1035. Israel of

  1036. God

  1037. God

  1038. Paul's

  1039. been arguing

  1040. all throughout

  1041. the book

  1042. of Galatians

  1043. that anyone

  1044. who trusts

  1045. in Christ's

  1046. finished

  1047. cross work

  1048. they are part

  1049. of the new

  1050. creation

  1051. they're new

  1052. creatures of

  1053. the new

  1054. creation

  1055. they are

  1056. the new

  1057. Israel of

  1058. God

  1059. the church

  1060. it's not about

  1061. ethnicity

  1062. it's not about

  1063. obedience

  1064. it's not if

  1065. you're male or

  1066. female

  1067. it's about

  1068. whether or

  1069. not you

  1070. believe solely

  1071. by faith

  1072. in the

  1073. finished work

  1074. of Christ

  1075. on the

  1076. cross

  1077. that's why

  1078. in Galatians

  1079. 3

  1080. 28-29

  1081. we read

  1082. writing to

  1083. both Jews

  1084. and Gentiles

  1085. there's neither

  1086. Jew nor

  1087. Greek

  1088. there's neither

  1089. slave nor

  1090. free

  1091. there's no

  1092. male and

  1093. female

  1094. for you

  1095. are all

  1096. one

  1097. in

  1098. Christ

  1099. Jesus

  1100. and if

  1101. you are

  1102. Christ's

  1103. then you

  1104. are

  1105. Abraham's

  1106. offspring

  1107. heirs

  1108. according to

  1109. the promise

  1110. and here

  1111. in Galatians

  1112. he wraps

  1113. it all up

  1114. by saying

  1115. you are

  1116. the new

  1117. Israel of

  1118. God

  1119. God's

  1120. new

  1121. treasured

  1122. possession

  1123. at the

  1124. heart of

  1125. the gospel

  1126. is the

  1127. cross

  1128. of Jesus

  1129. Christ

  1130. it's

  1131. only

  1132. through

  1133. the

  1134. cross

  1135. that

  1136. God

  1137. calls

  1138. a people

  1139. out of

  1140. the world

  1141. making

  1142. them new

  1143. creatures

  1144. of a new

  1145. creation

  1146. and a

  1147. whole

  1148. new

  1149. cross

  1150. crucified

  1151. community

  1152. the

  1153. Israel of

  1154. God

  1155. the church

  1156. of Jesus

  1157. Christ

  1158. it takes

  1159. the cross

  1160. to do

  1161. that

  1162. this new

  1163. Israel of

  1164. God

  1165. the church

  1166. we walk

  1167. by the

  1168. new

  1169. creation

  1170. rule

  1171. it's not

  1172. about

  1173. circumcision

  1174. or

  1175. uncircumcision

  1176. it's about

  1177. being born

  1178. again

  1179. a new

  1180. creation

  1181. and we

  1182. boast

  1183. in the

  1184. cross

  1185. of our

  1186. Lord

  1187. Jesus

  1188. Christ

  1189. what that

  1190. means is

  1191. we trust

  1192. in the

  1193. cross

  1194. what Christ

  1195. has done

  1196. for us

  1197. period

  1198. it never

  1199. changes

  1200. anymore

  1201. we're

  1202. his

  1203. period

  1204. we hope

  1205. in the

  1206. cross

  1207. the cross

  1208. the cross

  1209. has inaugurated

  1210. a whole

  1211. new creation

  1212. that will

  1213. one day

  1214. culminate

  1215. when Jesus

  1216. comes back

  1217. that's what

  1218. we hope

  1219. in

  1220. we find

  1221. our identity

  1222. in the cross

  1223. I have been

  1224. crucified with

  1225. Christ

  1226. we

  1227. celebrate

  1228. the cross

  1229. it never

  1230. gets old

  1231. because it's

  1232. true

  1233. it results

  1234. in a new

  1235. motive

  1236. we're not in it

  1237. for man's

  1238. approval

  1239. but that

  1240. man would

  1241. praise the

  1242. living God

  1243. who would do

  1244. such a thing

  1245. we have new

  1246. methods

  1247. we're not by

  1248. force

  1249. but by grace

  1250. that's where

  1251. Paul closes

  1252. this letter

  1253. grace to you

  1254. and we have

  1255. a new

  1256. manner

  1257. we're not

  1258. hypocrites

  1259. who don't

  1260. seek to

  1261. fulfill the

  1262. law

  1263. no we

  1264. walk

  1265. by the

  1266. spirit of

  1267. God

  1268. in order

  1269. to love

  1270. our

  1271. neighbors

  1272. as

  1273. ourselves

  1274. Christ

  1275. the king

  1276. church

  1277. choose

  1278. this day

  1279. in whom

  1280. you will

  1281. boast

  1282. we must

  1283. not

  1284. boast

  1285. in the

  1286. flesh

  1287. we must

  1288. boast

  1289. in the

  1290. cross

  1291. alone

  1292. because of

  1293. what

  1294. God has

  1295. accomplished

  1296. through it

  1297. now you may

  1298. be asking

  1299. well should I

  1300. watch the

  1301. Packers game

  1302. tonight

  1303. yeah

  1304. watch it

  1305. but just

  1306. realize this

  1307. if the

  1308. Packers win

  1309. does that

  1310. accomplish

  1311. our salvation

  1312. the cross

  1313. gives

  1314. perspective

  1315. let's pray

  1316. God in heaven

  1317. thank you so

  1318. much for

  1319. the book of

  1320. Galatians

  1321. God thank you

  1322. so much for

  1323. the cross

  1324. that has

  1325. called us

  1326. out of the

  1327. world by

  1328. crucifying us

  1329. to the

  1330. world

  1331. for giving

  1332. us a

  1333. very a new

  1334. identity

  1335. because we're

  1336. new creatures

  1337. of a new

  1338. creation

  1339. and a new

  1340. community

  1341. we are part

  1342. of the Israel

  1343. of God

  1344. and it's all

  1345. by your

  1346. grace

  1347. oh God

  1348. would you do

  1349. a work

  1350. in us

  1351. and through

  1352. us

  1353. by your

  1354. spirit

  1355. that brings

  1356. worshipers

  1357. boasters

  1358. of the cross

  1359. it's your name

  1360. we pray

  1361. Jesus

  1362. amen

  1363. those

  1364. what

  1365. how

  1366. how

  1367. how

  1368. can

  1369. it's your word

  1370. .

  1371. .
