  1. This afternoon, I have the privilege of giving the eulogy at a funeral.

  2. And this man that has died, he has lived a compelling, compelling life for Christ.

  3. He's the father of a sister from our church.

  4. Many of us don't know who this man is.

  5. But I have found myself asking, what am I all about?

  6. And I found myself wanting to ask us as a church, Christ the King Church, what are we all about?

  7. You may answer that question, well, I'm all about the Packers, or I'm about the Bears, or I'm about my family, my kids, my grandkids.

  8. I'm all about my health.

  9. I'm all about my city.

  10. I'm all about my career.

  11. But Christ the King Church, really, what are we all about?

  12. Are we about this old historic building?

  13. Are we about helping people in need?

  14. Is that all we're about?

  15. Are we all about having close, meaningful relationships with one another?

  16. What are we all about?

  17. We're all about the gospel.

  18. And that is the whole point of the entire book of Galatians.

  19. If I were to summarize the book of Galatians in a sentence, it would be this.

  20. The gospel of Jesus Christ alone frees us from slavery to sin in order to live together for God.

  21. That's what Paul's getting at.

  22. That's what God is getting at.

  23. The gospel alone frees us from slavery to sin in order for us to live for God.

  24. And so I know on the title of this sermon, I have Galatians, a retro view, five walkaways.

  25. It's just going to be four walkaways.

  26. So four walkaways from our four plus months of simmering in the book of Galatians.

  27. Let me name you these four walkaways.

  28. First, our first walkaway is our one true gospel.

  29. We've got to be clear on the gospel.

  30. It is God's power unto salvation.

  31. Our second walkaway is being aware of our old gospel enemy, legalism.

  32. Our third walkaway is our new gospel identity, believing what God says about you, not what the world says about you.

  33. And our fourth walkaway from Galatians is our new gospel community.

  34. In Christ Jesus, we have a new social value system.

  35. The summary of Galatians, again, is this.

  36. The gospel alone frees us from slavery to sin in order to live for God.

  37. And so here's the deal.

  38. We as a church moving forward, we must keep in step with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  39. In other words, we must be all about the gospel.

  40. So let's focus in on this first walkaway.

  41. We want to avoid the mistake of which James 1.22 warns us not to forget what we've seen in this book, but to apply it.

  42. So our first walkaway moving forward is being clear on the one true gospel.

  43. If you looked at the beginning and the end of the book of Galatians, you're going to notice something.

  44. In verse 4 of Galatians chapter 1, Paul is talking about the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  45. And he says, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age.

  46. That little phrase, who gave himself for our sins, that's a way of summarizing the gospel.

  47. The good news of what God has done through Jesus Christ.

  48. And you notice what the gospel does.

  49. For those who believe, it delivers us from this present evil age,

  50. which is just another way of talking about the world.

  51. Now, if you flip to the back of Galatians, Galatians chapter 6,

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  52. in verses 11 through 16, particular verses 14 through 15,

  53. we read Paul saying this,

  54. But far be it for me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  55. by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.

  56. Now, I find it very interesting that Paul begins and ends this letter to the Galatians

  57. by talking about the gospel, Christ crucified,

  58. and that it delivers us from this present evil age, the world.

  59. This book, from beginning to end, is all about Christ crucified,

  60. the power of God, and what that does for us,

  61. what God has done for us.

  62. At the heart of the gospel is Christ's substitutionary death for sinners on the cross.

  63. He gave himself up for our sins.

  64. Christ crucified on our behalf.

  65. And all the way through, from beginning to end,

  66. everything in the middle of this book of Galatians,

  67. is all about the gospel.

  68. Now, Billy started the service earlier on.

  69. He read a passage from 1 Corinthians 1,

  70. in which Paul talked about the gospel as God's power in wisdom.

  71. Paul in Romans 1.16 describes the gospel as God's power unto salvation.

  72. And we start picking up on that all the way through Galatians.

  73. So let me just give you a quick tour de force.

  74. In 1.6 and 7, there is only one true gospel that actually saves people from sin.

  75. 1.11, we learn that it's not man's gospel,

  76. but this good news of Christ crucified,

  77. this is God's good news to fallen humanity.

  78. This is a message from God.

  79. And 2.5, the truth of this one true gospel,

  80. it must be protected and preserved.

  81. And 2.7, this gospel is entrusted to be proclaimed to the nations,

  82. uncircumcised and circumcised.

  83. 2.14, our conduct is either in step with this gospel,

  84. or it's out of step with this gospel.

  85. And 2.15 through 21,

  86. this gospel justifies all who would believe.

  87. This week, I was listening to WNBI,

  88. and I heard Colin Smith,

  89. he is a Scottish preacher serving at the Orchard Church in Arlington Heights.

  90. I can't give you a Scottish accent.

  91. I wish I could,

  92. but here's what he said.

  93. We don't obey in order to come to Christ.

  94. We come to Christ in order to obey.

  95. The gospel declares that a sinner is made right with God

  96. based on the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

  97. Not our works.

  98. And so when we read 2.20,

  99. that the gospel announces that sinners have been co-crucified with Christ

  100. and co-risen with Christ,

  101. we've been united with Christ.

  102. At the heart of that is Christ's death and resurrection.

  103. It's all about the gospel.

  104. And 3.8,

  105. The gospel was preached beforehand to Abraham,

  106. quote,

  107. In you shall all the nations be blessed.

  108. This gospel is a big gospel.

  109. God's plan for the fullness of time realized in Jesus.

  110. And 3.15 through 18,

  111. we learn that God's blessing to all nations promised to Abraham

  112. would come through one of Abraham's offspring,

  113. quote,

  114. Who is Christ?

  115. Gospel.

  116. Christ crucified is God's good news of blessing to all nations.

  117. 3.13,

  118. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law.

  119. Redemption is another way of talking about what the cross does.

  120. In 3.26,

  121. we learn that in Christ Jesus,

  122. you are all sons of God by faith.

  123. Adoption is another way of talking about what the cross of Christ has done.

  124. 4.4-7,

  125. again,

  126. talks about redemption

  127. and combines it with adoption.

  128. We're justified.

  129. We're redeemed.

  130. We're adopted.

  131. All because of the cross of Jesus Christ.

  132. We can cry out,

  133. Abba, Father,

  134. by the Spirit in us

  135. because of the cross of Jesus Christ.

  136. 4.28,

  137. adoption.

  138. 5.1,

  139. for freedom Christ has set us free.

  140. That's redemption language.

  141. 5.13-24,

  142. because of the gospel,

  143. we no longer walk by the flesh,

  144. we walk by the Spirit

  145. so that we can fulfill the law of God.

  146. Gospel.

  147. 6.2,

  148. we bear one another's burdens

  149. and so fulfill the law of Christ.

  150. The gospel sings to our hearts

  151. as we serve one another.

  152. It's because of the gospel.

  153. It's the new creation rule by which we walk.

  154. Galatians,

  155. from beginning to end,

  156. is all about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  157. It just doesn't start and end with the gospel.

  158. It is packed full of gospel.

  159. It's all about the one true gospel of Jesus Christ.

  160. And let me just let you know,

  161. it's only that gospel that can save sinners.

  162. You can't add works to the gospel,

  163. nor can you remove the cross of Christ from the gospel.

  164. If you add to it or remove from it,

  165. you don't have a gospel anymore.

  166. There's only one true gospel,

  167. and you can sum it up with just two words,

  168. Christ crucified.

  169. So our first walk away

  170. is this huge emphasis

  171. on the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  172. and it just doesn't get us into the kingdom.

  173. It helps us live out

  174. being citizens of the kingdom.

  175. So now we turn to the second walk away.

  176. Wouldn't it be great

  177. if we as a church,

  178. back to the first walk away,

  179. wouldn't it be great

  180. if moving forward

  181. for weeks and months

  182. and years,

  183. Lord willing,

  184. ahead,

  185. we are gospel-centered

  186. like Galatians is?

  187. Now to the second walk away,

  188. the old gospel enemy.

  189. Throughout this letter,

  190. Paul repeatedly warns

  191. of a false gospel,

  192. a distorted gospel.

  193. And so let me just tell you up front,

  194. a distorted gospel

  195. is a dud of a gospel.

  196. It can't do anything.

  197. Here's a nice thought.

  198. Just imagine a hot August summer day

  199. in Kenosha.

  200. You're walking down 73rd Street.

  201. It's the street I live on.

  202. You're sweating up a storm

  203. because it's like 90-something degrees out

  204. with Wisconsin humidity.

  205. I'm on my front porch.

  206. I see you walking by.

  207. You're a sweat hog.

  208. I've got compassion on you.

  209. And I say to you,

  210. hey, would you like a cold glass of water?

  211. And you're like,

  212. absolutely.

  213. I'm so sweaty and hot.

  214. I'm so weary.

  215. I say, well, come up onto my stoop.

  216. And I run into the house.

  217. 30 seconds later,

  218. I am back

  219. and I hand you

  220. a tall,

  221. cold glass of water

  222. packed full of ice

  223. brimming with water.

  224. And it even has that kind of

  225. perspiration on the outside of the glass

  226. because it's so humid.

  227. You know what I'm talking about?

  228. Your mouth is so parched.

  229. And as you bring that glass up to your lips,

  230. I happen to mention to you,

  231. oh, by the way,

  232. I just put a drip of my dog's blood

  233. in that glass of water.

  234. What would you do?

  235. Would you knock that baby back?

  236. You'd be like,

  237. you'd throw the glass against my house.

  238. You'd be like,

  239. what are you thinking?

  240. I'm not drinking that polluted water.

  241. It's not good for me.

  242. Legalism pollutes the one true gospel

  243. into something else.

  244. A corrupted gospel is a contrary gospel.

  245. A distorted gospel is a dud of a gospel.

  246. It's blood water.

  247. You don't want it.

  248. There's no power in it.

  249. Legalism.

  250. Legalism corrupts the one true gospel

  251. of Jesus Christ into something else.

  252. A legalistic approach to religion

  253. has no power to justify you.

  254. It has no power to redeem you.

  255. There's nothing in it that brings you about

  256. the adoption,

  257. the spirit dwelling,

  258. a new creation,

  259. making you a citizen of the Jerusalem from above.

  260. It's got no power to do that.

  261. In fact, it only just condemns you.

  262. The legalism of the first century in Galatia was this.

  263. Jews were insisting that Gentiles,

  264. in order to become Christians,

  265. had to first become Jews.

  266. Jews.

  267. That means men had to be circumcised.

  268. That was what's going on with a little powwow

  269. we read about in chapter 2, 1 through 10.

  270. There was also this insistence

  271. that in order to be a true Christian,

  272. you needed to observe Jewish dietary restrictions.

  273. You had to eat kosher.

  274. That's the big deal of what we see going on in 2.12.

  275. And then there was this kind of insistence

  276. that you need to observe Jewish holy days.

  277. Make sure Yom Kippur is on your calendar

  278. and you observe it.

  279. We see that reference in 4.10 through 11.

  280. But what you need to understand,

  281. that's not the gospel.

  282. You're not justified by works.

  283. The good news of Jesus Christ

  284. is not what we must do.

  285. You're not justified by your works.

  286. You're not redeemed through circumcision.

  287. You're not adopted by eating kosher.

  288. And you're not indwelt by the Spirit

  289. by observing Jewish holy days.

  290. When we try to sneak our own works

  291. into our standing with God,

  292. we are actually trying to broker

  293. our own salvation.

  294. That's not good news, brothers and sisters.

  295. That's our old gospel enemy.

  296. That's legalism.

  297. If the pure, true gospel

  298. is a cup of cold glass water

  299. to the soul on a hot summer day

  300. in this present evil age,

  301. legalism is the drip of dog blood

  302. that changes its very essence.

  303. The essence of legalism

  304. is a salvation dependent

  305. upon the obedience of man.

  306. It's a man-centered salvation

  307. and it doesn't save.

  308. The essence of the gospel

  309. is that salvation

  310. depends solely on the finished

  311. substitutionary work of Jesus Christ,

  312. Christ crucified.

  313. It's a God-centered salvation.

  314. It's by grace alone.

  315. And today,

  316. there's all sorts of legalisms,

  317. both major scale and minor scale.

  318. The health and wealth gospel,

  319. the prosperity gospel,

  320. is actually a kind of legalism.

  321. It's saying that if you want

  322. to experience the riches

  323. and the health today

  324. that Jesus died for,

  325. then you just need to believe more.

  326. It puts salvation on you.

  327. It's no salvation.

  328. There's a kind of Pentecostalism

  329. that says in order for you to be saved,

  330. you must speak in tongues.

  331. In order for you to be saved,

  332. you must speak in tongues?

  333. In order for you to be saved,

  334. you must believe in the finished work

  335. of Jesus Christ.

  336. There's no salvation in provings

  337. by speaking in tongues.

  338. It's no salvation.

  339. There's some Christians out there

  340. that says in order to be saved,

  341. you must be baptized.

  342. Baptism doesn't save you.

  343. Being united to Christ

  344. in His death and resurrection

  345. saves you.

  346. That's what baptism symbolizes.

  347. There is a little phrase

  348. that you need to be aware of.

  349. Maybe it's in your own thinking

  350. or when you hear a bubble up

  351. from somebody else,

  352. it goes something like this.

  353. Real Christians don't

  354. fill in the blank.

  355. Real Christians don't

  356. watch R-rated movies.

  357. Real Christians don't

  358. let their kids play video games.

  359. Real Christians don't

  360. drink alcohol.

  361. Real Christians don't

  362. smoke or chew

  363. or go out with girls who do.

  364. watching an R-rated movie

  365. is not going to save you

  366. or unsave you.

  367. Your kids playing video games

  368. is not going to save them

  369. or unsave them.

  370. Drinking alcohol

  371. is not going to save you

  372. or unsave you.

  373. Dating a girl

  374. who chews tobacco

  375. Now if you're united

  376. to Christ

  377. if you've been born

  378. of the Spirit

  379. it informs

  380. the movies you watch.

  381. It informs

  382. how you

  383. the video games

  384. you play.

  385. It informs

  386. what foods

  387. you take in.

  388. Romans 14

  389. out of love

  390. you don't want to

  391. cause anybody

  392. to stumble

  393. by drinking alcohol.

  394. It's not worth it.

  395. It doesn't save you.

  396. The finished work

  397. of Christ

  398. saves you.

  399. Real Christians

  400. homeschool their children.

  401. Real Christians

  402. eat only

  403. what's in the Bible.

  404. Ezekiel bread.

  405. Jesus declared

  406. all foods clean.

  407. Eat whatever you want.

  408. That's the real

  409. biblical sense.

  410. Amen.

  411. Real Christians

  412. give 10%.

  413. Real Christians

  414. invest in gold.

  415. Real Christians

  416. pay in cash only.

  417. Real Christians

  418. never go into debt.

  419. Your salvation

  420. isn't dependent

  421. on any of that.

  422. Your salvation

  423. informs these things.

  424. How you

  425. educate your children.

  426. What kind of foods

  427. you eat.

  428. Your giving.

  429. Your investments.

  430. How you manage

  431. your money.

  432. Whether you go

  433. into debt or not.

  434. But certainly

  435. only the cross

  436. of Christ

  437. saves you.

  438. Remember that

  439. Colin Smith quote?

  440. We do not obey

  441. in order to come

  442. to Christ.

  443. We come to Christ

  444. in order to obey.

  445. Legalism says

  446. we obey

  447. in order

  448. to come to Christ.

  449. Here's how

  450. this shows up.

  451. one of you

  452. sins.

  453. And you're

  454. a total mess

  455. about it.

  456. How could I

  457. do that again?

  458. And instead

  459. of running

  460. to the finished

  461. work of Jesus

  462. Christ

  463. and finding

  464. a cup of

  465. cold water

  466. for your soul

  467. you start

  468. doing things

  469. like this.

  470. I'm just going

  471. to read my Bible

  472. more.

  473. I'm going to pray

  474. more.

  475. I'm going to

  476. give more.

  477. I'm going to

  478. go to church

  479. more.

  480. I'm going

  481. to atone

  482. for my sin

  483. by these

  484. works.

  485. And Jesus'

  486. blood has

  487. covered it

  488. all.

  489. Brothers and

  490. sisters

  491. your works

  492. cannot save

  493. you nor do

  494. they keep

  495. you saved.

  496. It's only

  497. the finished

  498. work of

  499. Jesus Christ.

  500. Here's what

  501. you need to

  502. understand as

  503. we move

  504. forward together.

  505. We learn

  506. from Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  507. chapter 5

  508. that we

  509. have our

  510. bodies

  511. if you're

  512. a Christian

  513. our civil

  514. war.

  515. You have

  516. the flesh

  517. that internal

  518. power in

  519. you towards

  520. self-centeredness

  521. and then there's

  522. the spirit

  523. at work in

  524. you who

  525. wants you

  526. to live

  527. for God

  528. and they're

  529. in conflict

  530. with one

  531. another.

  532. Here's what

  533. you need to

  534. know about

  535. your flesh.

  536. Your flesh

  537. loves legalism.

  538. Give me

  539. rules.

  540. Because your

  541. flesh loves

  542. to be

  543. self-righteous.

  544. justified.

  545. A corrupt

  546. gospel

  547. is a

  548. contrary

  549. gospel.

  550. A distorted

  551. gospel

  552. is a

  553. dud of

  554. a gospel.

  555. Man-centered

  556. legalism

  557. cannot save

  558. nor keep

  559. you safe.

  560. It just

  561. further

  562. condemns

  563. and confuses.

  564. Do you

  565. remember this?

  566. Run,

  567. John,

  568. run,

  569. the law

  570. demands,

  571. but gives

  572. us neither

  573. feet nor

  574. hands.

  575. A far

  576. better

  577. news the

  578. gospel

  579. brings.

  580. It bids

  581. us fly

  582. and gives

  583. us

  584. Holy Spirit

  585. wings.

  586. As long

  587. as we're

  588. in this

  589. side of

  590. glory,

  591. we will

  592. need to

  593. be aware

  594. of in

  595. fighting by

  596. faith the

  597. corrupting

  598. influence of

  599. legalism,

  600. the flesh,

  601. and the

  602. world.

  603. we have

  604. an old

  605. gospel

  606. enemy

  607. seeking to

  608. corrupt

  609. us.

  610. Let's

  611. move

  612. forward

  613. sobered

  614. by that.

  615. But here's

  616. where I want

  617. to bring

  618. you now.

  619. Here's how

  620. we fight

  621. that

  622. legalistic

  623. pull on

  624. our flesh.

  625. It's with

  626. the third

  627. walk away.

  628. And it's

  629. the one

  630. I've been

  631. looking forward

  632. to most

  633. to preaching

  634. this morning.

  635. It's our

  636. new gospel

  637. identity.

  638. Let's

  639. just pretend

  640. we all

  641. go out

  642. to your

  643. car and

  644. we open

  645. up the

  646. hood.

  647. And as

  648. we're

  649. looking at

  650. the

  651. battery,

  652. we can

  653. help that

  654. on the

  655. battery

  656. terminals,

  657. you know

  658. those little

  659. metal

  660. stumps

  661. that are

  662. sticking

  663. out.

  664. It looks

  665. like

  666. Frankenstein

  667. stumps

  668. but sticking

  669. out.

  670. Well,

  671. those battery

  672. terminals,

  673. they're just,

  674. we're looking

  675. in your

  676. battery together

  677. and they're

  678. just white

  679. with corrosion.

  680. You're kind

  681. of just

  682. grossed out

  683. by it.

  684. Like,

  685. do I

  686. actually

  687. touch that?

  688. Well,

  689. here's what

  690. that corrosion

  691. does.

  692. That corrosion

  693. can actually

  694. build up

  695. and it can

  696. block that

  697. vital connection

  698. between the

  699. positive terminal

  700. and the wire

  701. that goes to

  702. starting your

  703. car.

  704. And when

  705. that corrosion

  706. blocks that

  707. vital contact,

  708. you're not

  709. going to be

  710. able to

  711. start your

  712. car.

  713. Legalism is

  714. like the

  715. corrosion on

  716. the contact

  717. point between

  718. the gospel

  719. and a

  720. Christian's

  721. understanding

  722. of themselves.

  723. it can

  724. short God's

  725. glorious work

  726. in which

  727. he's done

  728. in you

  729. and you

  730. begin to

  731. think of

  732. yourself

  733. in the

  734. old way.

  735. Do you know

  736. how to clean

  737. a corroded

  738. battery terminal?

  739. You pour

  740. Coca-Cola

  741. on it,

  742. baby.

  743. Coca-Cola

  744. has this

  745. mild acidity

  746. to it

  747. and it

  748. cleans out

  749. that corrosion

  750. like

  751. zippity zap.

  752. The book

  753. of Galatians

  754. teaches us

  755. that the

  756. gospel

  757. is the

  758. acidic

  759. solution

  760. to clean

  761. up legalistic

  762. corrosion

  763. in your

  764. heart.

  765. And we

  766. do that

  767. by looking

  768. at our

  769. new identity

  770. in Christ.

  771. The gospel,

  772. the gospel

  773. helps

  774. clean up

  775. any kind

  776. of corrosion

  777. so that

  778. gospel

  779. contact

  780. is true

  781. and vital

  782. in you.

  783. So let me

  784. tell you

  785. three

  786. beautifully

  787. gospel

  788. truths

  789. about your

  790. new identity.

  791. Christian,

  792. you are

  793. justified.

  794. You are

  795. justified

  796. now

  797. and

  798. forever.

  799. In

  800. Galatians

  801. 2.16

  802. Paul talks

  803. about being

  804. justified

  805. and here's

  806. what that

  807. is.

  808. When you're

  809. justified,

  810. the moment

  811. you believe

  812. in Jesus,

  813. it's like

  814. all of a

  815. sudden you're

  816. in a

  817. court of

  818. law

  819. and God

  820. the Father

  821. passes a

  822. verdict over

  823. you and

  824. he says

  825. of you,

  826. this one

  827. is righteous

  828. in my

  829. sight

  830. based on

  831. the finished

  832. work of

  833. Christ.

  834. here's

  835. what that

  836. means.

  837. At that

  838. moment you

  839. believe all

  840. of your

  841. sin,

  842. past,

  843. present,

  844. future,

  845. was put

  846. on Christ.

  847. This is how

  848. God thinks

  849. about it.

  850. It was put

  851. on Christ

  852. on the

  853. cross and

  854. all of

  855. God's

  856. wrath,

  857. rightly

  858. hovering over

  859. that sin,

  860. was poured

  861. out fully

  862. on that

  863. sin so

  864. that there's

  865. no more

  866. wrath of

  867. God for

  868. that sin.

  869. it's all

  870. poured out

  871. on Christ

  872. which means

  873. this,

  874. the moment

  875. you believe

  876. you are

  877. fully forgiven

  878. of all

  879. your sin

  880. past,

  881. present,

  882. and future.

  883. Isn't that

  884. good news?

  885. It's a

  886. legal declaration.

  887. It's done

  888. in God's

  889. court of

  890. law.

  891. But that's

  892. just half

  893. of it.

  894. What God

  895. does in

  896. that act,

  897. he also

  898. declares

  899. you righteous

  900. in his

  901. sight.

  902. all of

  903. Christ's

  904. obedience

  905. in the

  906. 33 years

  907. he lived,

  908. all of

  909. his right

  910. feelings,

  911. right thinking,

  912. right believing

  913. and stepping

  914. out,

  915. all of

  916. his obedience

  917. which pleased

  918. his father,

  919. God,

  920. in the moment

  921. you believe,

  922. transfers all

  923. that righteousness

  924. into your

  925. account.

  926. So in

  927. that one

  928. act by which

  929. God justifies

  930. you,

  931. you're fully

  932. forgiven and

  933. fully accepted

  934. based upon

  935. the finished

  936. work and

  937. Christ's

  938. righteousness

  939. imputed to

  940. you.

  941. Isn't that

  942. good news?

  943. That's who

  944. you are

  945. forever.

  946. That doesn't

  947. change because

  948. it's based on

  949. the finished

  950. work of

  951. Jesus Christ.

  952. Justification

  953. is the

  954. gospel

  955. solution

  956. to the

  957. corrosion

  958. of legalism.

  959. when you

  960. want to

  961. kind of

  962. atone for

  963. your own

  964. sin by

  965. your works,

  966. you're

  967. justified.

  968. It's

  969. done.

  970. That's the

  971. first beautiful

  972. truth of

  973. who you

  974. are.

  975. The second

  976. is this.

  977. Christian,

  978. you are

  979. redeemed

  980. now.

  981. Redemption,

  982. we see it in

  983. 3.13 and

  984. 4.4 and

  985. 5.5.1 for

  986. freedom,

  987. Christ has

  988. set you

  989. free.

  990. This redemption

  991. language is

  992. actually pictured

  993. in the slave

  994. market of

  995. slaves being

  996. purchased and

  997. set free.

  998. And what

  999. Galatians is

  1000. clear to say

  1001. over and over

  1002. again is that

  1003. if you put

  1004. your faith in

  1005. Jesus, you

  1006. who were once

  1007. enslaved to

  1008. sin have been

  1009. set free.

  1010. You're no

  1011. longer under

  1012. slavery to

  1013. sin, the

  1014. flesh, the

  1015. law, the

  1016. world.

  1017. Do you know

  1018. how Christ

  1019. redeemed you?

  1020. Do you know

  1021. how Christ

  1022. sets you

  1023. free?

  1024. Christ sets

  1025. us free by

  1026. paying a

  1027. ransom price.

  1028. And that

  1029. ransom price

  1030. he paid for

  1031. our freedom was

  1032. the blood he

  1033. shed on the

  1034. cross.

  1035. It's been

  1036. poured out

  1037. on full.

  1038. You've been

  1039. fully purchased

  1040. from slavery

  1041. to sin.

  1042. You are no

  1043. longer a

  1044. slave to sin

  1045. anymore,

  1046. Christian.

  1047. In fact, it

  1048. was for freedom

  1049. that Christ has

  1050. set you free.

  1051. 5.1.

  1052. You've been

  1053. redeemed,

  1054. freed from

  1055. slavery to

  1056. sin to live

  1057. for God,

  1058. now and

  1059. forever.

  1060. So, when

  1061. you like me

  1062. are having

  1063. thoughts, and

  1064. you're being

  1065. tempted in

  1066. your flesh to

  1067. do something,

  1068. you know what

  1069. you say?

  1070. I've been set

  1071. free.

  1072. The gospel

  1073. has set me

  1074. free from

  1075. this.

  1076. Christ died

  1077. so this

  1078. would not

  1079. rule me

  1080. anymore.

  1081. I'm arguing

  1082. from what

  1083. Christ has

  1084. done and

  1085. what's true

  1086. for me.

  1087. It's time

  1088. for you to

  1089. start making

  1090. the same

  1091. argument.

  1092. This

  1093. redemption,

  1094. this gospel

  1095. redemption is

  1096. God's gospel

  1097. solution to

  1098. the corrosion

  1099. that comes in

  1100. with our

  1101. flesh.

  1102. church.

  1103. The last

  1104. beautiful gospel

  1105. truth of your

  1106. identity is

  1107. this.

  1108. Christian,

  1109. you're adopted.

  1110. You're a part

  1111. of God's new

  1112. family now and

  1113. forever.

  1114. In Galatians

  1115. 4, 4-7,

  1116. there is this

  1117. combination of

  1118. talking about

  1119. we have been

  1120. redeemed from

  1121. slavery,

  1122. from the world,

  1123. in order to

  1124. be placed

  1125. into the

  1126. family of

  1127. God.

  1128. You were a

  1129. slave,

  1130. now you are a

  1131. son or daughter

  1132. and it's all by

  1133. the finished work

  1134. of Jesus Christ.

  1135. We are

  1136. redeemed from

  1137. and adopted

  1138. to God's

  1139. family.

  1140. And what that

  1141. means is the

  1142. moment you

  1143. believe you are

  1144. given all the

  1145. rights and

  1146. privileges of a

  1147. legitimate son

  1148. and daughter of

  1149. the God of

  1150. the universe.

  1151. So when

  1152. through Jesus

  1153. Christ, God

  1154. becomes your

  1155. heavenly father,

  1156. there's this

  1157. all sorts of

  1158. promises that

  1159. you are brought

  1160. into as a

  1161. member of his

  1162. family.

  1163. Promises like

  1164. this.

  1165. God says, I'm

  1166. never going to

  1167. leave you.

  1168. Many of you in

  1169. this room have

  1170. had fathers who

  1171. left you.

  1172. God, your

  1173. father will never

  1174. leave you, never

  1175. forsake you.

  1176. He's in it.

  1177. promises like

  1178. this.

  1179. He's not going

  1180. to ruthlessly

  1181. punish you.

  1182. He's not going

  1183. to lose his

  1184. temper on you

  1185. and punish you

  1186. out of anger.

  1187. God doesn't do

  1188. that.

  1189. Our heavenly

  1190. father doesn't do

  1191. that to us as

  1192. children.

  1193. He does

  1194. discipline us in

  1195. love for our

  1196. good so that we

  1197. can share in his

  1198. holiness because he

  1199. loves us.

  1200. He promises us

  1201. to love us

  1202. always.

  1203. He promises us

  1204. to work all

  1205. things out for

  1206. our good no

  1207. matter what our

  1208. circumstances are.

  1209. God, our

  1210. heavenly father,

  1211. because he loves

  1212. us and he's

  1213. sovereign over all

  1214. things and he's

  1215. powerful.

  1216. He's working it all

  1217. out for our good

  1218. and that good is

  1219. becoming like his

  1220. son, Jesus.

  1221. You belong to

  1222. God, sons and

  1223. daughters through

  1224. Christ.

  1225. And because your

  1226. sonship rests in

  1227. Christ's finished

  1228. work, your

  1229. sonship is forever

  1230. settled.

  1231. Can I just make

  1232. this statement?

  1233. You've got to

  1234. hear it.

  1235. Brothers and

  1236. sisters, you

  1237. will never, never

  1238. be disowned by

  1239. your heavenly

  1240. father.

  1241. Never.

  1242. Because your

  1243. sonship or your

  1244. daughtership has

  1245. been sealed by the

  1246. blood of Jesus.

  1247. He's the

  1248. guarantor of it.

  1249. But,

  1250. you know,

  1251. pour that gospel

  1252. solution on

  1253. your heart when

  1254. things get tough

  1255. and you start to

  1256. be afraid and

  1257. you're like,

  1258. is God for me?

  1259. Yes, he is.

  1260. Do you remember

  1261. Al Franken?

  1262. He was a former

  1263. Minnesota senator,

  1264. fell from respect,

  1265. but before that he

  1266. was a cast member

  1267. on Saturday Night

  1268. Live.

  1269. And when he was

  1270. on Saturday Night

  1271. Live, he did a

  1272. skit in which he

  1273. was the character

  1274. Stuart Smalley.

  1275. And Stuart Smalley

  1276. was incredibly

  1277. insecure.

  1278. And this skit

  1279. about Stuart Smalley

  1280. always had Stuart

  1281. facing a mirror,

  1282. talking to himself,

  1283. and speaking daily

  1284. affirmations to

  1285. himself.

  1286. I am an attractive

  1287. person.

  1288. I refuse to beat

  1289. myself up today.

  1290. I'm entitled to my

  1291. share of happiness.

1292. I am fun to be with.

  1293. It was a tongue-in-cheek

  1294. jab at the self-talk

  1295. of the self-help

  1296. movement of the day

  1297. and put its finger

  1298. on everybody who's

  1299. struggling with their

  1300. identity.

1301. So let me ask you

  1302. a question.

  1303. What's the difference

  1304. between you and

  1305. Stuart Smalley?

  1306. The difference is

  1307. this.

  1308. The difference is

  1309. who is telling you

  1310. who you are

  1311. in the basis

  1312. of that.

  1313. In the

  1314. Saturday Night Live

  1315. skit, Stuart

  1316. Smalley spoke

  1317. on his own

  1318. authority

  1319. and based

  1320. his identity

  1321. on a distorted

  1322. view of himself.

  1323. In the book

  1324. of Galatians,

  1325. God is speaking

  1326. to you,

  1327. brothers and

  1328. sisters,

  1329. in all of

  1330. his authority.

  1331. And if you are

  1332. in Christ,

  1333. he is saying

  1334. on the basis

  1335. of the finished

  1336. work of my

  1337. son Jesus,

  1338. you are justified,

  1339. you are redeemed,

  1340. you are adopted.

  1341. it's all

  1342. true.

  1343. Proverbs 30

    Proverbs 30:5

  1344. verse 5 says

  1345. all of God's

  1346. words prove

  1347. true.

  1348. And he is a

  1349. refuge to all

  1350. who trust in him.

  1351. When we

  1352. remind ourselves

  1353. that we're justified

  1354. and redeemed

  1355. and adopted,

  1356. it is not

  1357. some Stuart

  1358. Smalley

  1359. self-help

  1360. talk.

  1361. when we

  1362. remind ourselves

  1363. of being

  1364. justified

  1365. and redeemed

  1366. and adopted

  1367. in Christ,

  1368. it is

  1369. gospel talk.

  1370. It is

  1371. renewing our

  1372. minds on the

  1373. truth of what

  1374. Christ has done

  1375. for us.

  1376. So when your

  1377. thoughts of

  1378. past sins

  1379. condemn you,

  1380. you say to

  1381. yourself,

  1382. by God's grace,

  1383. I've been justified

  1384. by the blood of

  1385. Jesus.

  1386. When your flesh

  1387. tempts you,

  1388. you remind

  1389. yourself,

  1390. the cross

  1391. has redeemed

  1392. me from this.

  1393. When your

  1394. circumstances

  1395. stand against

  1396. you,

  1397. when you start

  1398. questioning God's

  1399. intention for you,

  1400. you remind

  1401. yourself that

  1402. he is now

  1403. your heavenly

  1404. father and

  1405. you're adopted,

  1406. you're his adopted

  1407. son or daughter.

  1408. Do you know

  1409. what God

  1410. intends to

  1411. happen when

  1412. you renew

  1413. your mind

  1414. on this

  1415. truth?

  1416. When you

  1417. remind yourself

  1418. of these new

  1419. categories of

  1420. self-understanding

  1421. and identity

  1422. that I am

  1423. justified and

  1424. redeemed and

  1425. adopted,

  1426. here's what

  1427. happens.

  1428. These truths

  1429. are designed

  1430. to become

  1431. the primary

  1432. defining reality

  1433. of your life.

  1434. Who you are

  1435. in Christ

  1436. becomes more

  1437. important than

  1438. your gender.

  1439. who you are

  1440. in Christ

  1441. becomes more

  1442. important than

  1443. your age.

  1444. Who you are

  1445. in Christ

  1446. becomes more

  1447. important than

  1448. your income,

  1449. your social

  1450. status.

  1451. It's more

  1452. important than

  1453. your ethnicity.

  1454. Your new

  1455. gospel identity

  1456. is so important,

  1457. it informs

  1458. your gender,

  1459. it informs

  1460. your age,

  1461. income,

  1462. social standing,

  1463. ethnicity.

  1464. in August

  1465. of 2017,

  1466. I'm guessing

  1467. you remembered

  1468. the full

  1469. solar eclipse

  1470. of the sun,

  1471. do you remember

  1472. that?

  1473. It's when the

  1474. moon's orbit

  1475. brought it

  1476. between the

  1477. earth and the

  1478. sun and it

  1479. blocked the

  1480. brightness of

  1481. the sun

  1482. from sight.

  1483. It was a new

  1484. governing reality

  1485. for a little

  1486. while.

  1487. The solar

  1488. eclipse is

  1489. temporary,

  1490. but the

  1491. gospel eclipse

  1492. is permanent.

  1493. When Christ

  1494. comes into

  1495. our life,

  1496. our new

  1497. position in

  1498. him eclipses

  1499. all that

  1500. had been

  1501. primarily

  1502. defining us

  1503. before.

  1504. Hey,

  1505. it may be

  1506. true that

  1507. you're a

  1508. male or

  1509. female.

  1510. It might be

  1511. true that

  1512. you're black

  1513. or you're

  1514. white,

  1515. that you're

  1516. rich or

  1517. you're poor

  1518. or somewhere

  1519. in between,

  1520. but those

  1521. things don't

  1522. shine nearly

  1523. as brightly

  1524. anymore because

  1525. they've been

  1526. eclipsed by

  1527. the gospel.

  1528. And the

  1529. gospel doesn't

  1530. make things

  1531. dark.

  1532. The gospel

  1533. outshines

  1534. everything else.

  1535. Our new

  1536. gospel identity.

  1537. Brothers and

  1538. sisters,

  1539. can we move

  1540. forward together

  1541. reminding

  1542. ourselves of

  1543. who we are

  1544. in Christ?

  1545. We love

  1546. each other

  1547. well when

  1548. we say,

  1549. remember who

  1550. you are,

  1551. brother.

  1552. Remember who

  1553. you are,

  1554. sister.

  1555. I'm feeling

  1556. the limits

  1557. of time.

  1558. I want to

  1559. be attentive

  1560. to your

  1561. attention span,

  1562. but I've

  1563. got one

  1564. more walk

  1565. away I

  1566. want to

  1567. emphasize.

  1568. It's really

  1569. important.

  1570. We've been

  1571. given a new

  1572. gospel identity

  1573. in Christ,

  1574. Christ, and

  1575. that translates

  1576. into a new

  1577. gospel community

  1578. in Christ.

  1579. We learned

  1580. from Galatians

  1581. 1 and 6

  1582. that the

  1583. cross delivers

  1584. us from this

  1585. present evil

  1586. age.

  1587. It delivers

  1588. us, crucifies

  1589. us to the

  1590. world.

  1591. Now the

  1592. world is

  1593. comprised of

  1594. all the

  1595. non-Christians

  1596. who are living

  1597. according to

  1598. their flesh

  1599. for things

  1600. other than

  1601. God, and

  1602. the world

  1603. creates its

  1604. own

  1605. atmosphere.

  1606. It creates

  1607. its own

  1608. culture.

  1609. It creates

  1610. its own

  1611. currents.

  1612. If you are

  1613. in Christ,

  1614. you've been

  1615. delivered from

  1616. this present

  1617. evil age.

  1618. You've been

  1619. delivered from

  1620. the world.

  1621. So what that

  1622. means is,

  1623. though we are

  1624. in the world,

  1625. we are no

  1626. longer of the

  1627. world.

  1628. We are of

  1629. Jesus in

  1630. the world.

  1631. now, here's

  1632. what you need

  1633. to understand,

  1634. brothers and

  1635. sisters.

  1636. The moment

  1637. you personally

  1638. believed in

  1639. Christ, you

  1640. were transferred

  1641. from the

  1642. kingdom of

  1643. darkness into

  1644. the kingdom

  1645. of his

  1646. beloved son.

  1647. You were

  1648. transferred from

  1649. one community

  1650. who were living

  1651. apart from God,

  1652. running from

  1653. him, and you

  1654. were transferred

  1655. into a new

  1656. community who

  1657. had been born

  1658. again, who

  1659. had new

  1660. identities, seeking

  1661. to live for

  1662. God by the

  1663. power of the

  1664. Holy Spirit.

  1665. God is

  1666. gathering for

  1667. himself by

  1668. the gospel of

  1669. Jesus Christ, a

  1670. people from all

  1671. over the world,

  1672. from every tribe,

  1673. tongue, and

  1674. nation.

  1675. In fact, we can

  1676. say this, you,

  1677. brother, sister,

  1678. have more in

  1679. common with a

  1680. tribesman in

  1681. Africa who is a

  1682. believer in Jesus

  1683. Christ than people

  1684. from your own

  1685. family who don't

  1686. know Jesus yet.

  1687. Because what

  1688. unites you more

  1689. is far more

  1690. important than

  1691. anything else that

  1692. might differentiate

  1693. us from each

  1694. other.

  1695. So throughout

  1696. Galatians, we

  1697. pick up on this

  1698. theme that Christ's

  1699. death has begun a

  1700. whole new era in

  1701. salvation history.

1702. We pick it up in a

  1703. passage like Galatians

  1704. 1 through 5 that

  1705. now has all this

  1706. kind of spirit talk

  1707. about it.

  1708. Salvation history is

  1709. a way of understanding

  1710. how God relates to

  1711. humankind in the big

  1712. picture.

  1713. Creation, fall,

  1714. redemption,

  1715. consummation.

  1716. And Christ's coming

  1717. inaugurated a new

  1718. way in which God

  1719. related to mankind

  1720. through Christ.

  1721. That new era was

  1722. prophesied in passages

  1723. like Jeremiah 31,

  1724. Ezekiel 36,

  1725. Joel 2,

  1726. when God would

  1727. establish a new

  1728. covenant with a new

  1729. people in whom he

  1730. would cause his

  1731. spirit to dwell in

  1732. in order that they

  1733. would obey him.

  1734. That should ring a

  1735. bell.

  1736. Galatians 5,

  1737. we live out our

  1738. freedom as God's

  1739. new people in the

  1740. power of the Holy

  1741. Spirit that we

  1742. would obey him.

  1743. Brothers and

  1744. sisters, we are

  1745. delivered from the

1746. world to be part of a

  1747. new covenant community.

  1748. A new gospel

  1749. community.

  1750. God didn't save you.

  1751. He didn't justify you

  1752. and redeem you and

1753. adopt you and dwell you

1754. by his spirit, make you

  1755. a citizen of the

  1756. Jerusalem above.

  1757. He didn't make you a

1758. new creation of a new

  1759. creation so that you

1760. would be an island unto

  1761. yourself.

1762. He saved you to be part

  1763. of a new people.

  1764. The new gospel community

  1765. Paul describes throughout

  1766. Galatians is described

  1767. as 329, Abraham's

  1768. offspring.

  1769. 426-31, citizens of the

  1770. Jerusalem above.

  1771. Not children of the

1772. slave but children of the

  1773. free woman.

  1774. 514, these are the

  1775. people called to

  1776. fulfill the law by

  1777. walking according to

  1778. the Spirit.

  1779. 616, when he blesses

  1780. all who walk according

  1781. to the new creation

  1782. rule, he says these

  1783. people are the new

  1784. Israel of God.

  1785. God's new people.

  1786. A new covenant

  1787. community.

  1788. A gospel community.

  1789. The church.

  1790. Those delivered from

  1791. the world and placed

  1792. into God's household.

  1793. God's new people.

1794. Got to hang in here

  1795. with me.

  1796. This new people is

  1797. comprised of all and

  1798. any who have believed

  1799. in Christ alone for

  1800. their salvation.

1801. We are all one new

1802. people of God in Christ

  1803. indwelt by his Spirit.

1804. And so let me now get to

  1805. some implications of

  1806. that.

  1807. The gospel gives each

1808. of us a whole new

  1809. identity.

1810. Do I have an amen?

1811. The gospel gives us a

  1812. whole new corporate

  1813. identity.

1814. We are a new people.

  1815. The gospel of Jesus

  1816. Christ is what unites

  1817. us.

  1818. And it's more important

  1819. than gender, ethnicity,

  1820. income, education,

  1821. culture, employment,

  1822. neighborhood, even your

  1823. political party.

  1824. All the things that

  1825. once divided us

1826. when we are of the

  1827. world, they no longer

  1828. can divide us.

  1829. They must no longer

  1830. divide us.

  1831. Because what unites us

1832. in Christ is far more

  1833. important.

  1834. It eclipses everything.

  1835. In the first century,

  1836. there are these dividing

  1837. lines between Jew and

  1838. Gentile, slave and free,

  1839. male and female.

1840. You read about this at the

  1841. end of Galatians chapter

  1842. three.

1843. If you are part of the

  1844. majority culture,

1845. if you are living in a

  1846. higher social status,

  1847. here's what this means

  1848. for you.

  1849. If you're white middle

  1850. class,

  1851. it means that your

  1852. white middle classness

1853. is not to govern your

  1854. interactions with other

  1855. people anymore as the

1856. primary thing by which you

  1857. understand yourself.

1858. The primary thing by which

  1859. you understand yourself

1860. is the cross of Jesus

  1861. Christ.

1862. If you are part of a

  1863. minority culture,

  1864. lower social status.

1865. Your social status is not

1866. nearly as important as you

  1867. being united in Christ.

  1868. Christ.

1869. So here's what the gospel

  1870. does.

1871. It humbles those in a

  1872. high worldly position and

1873. elevates those in a low

  1874. worldly position and puts

1875. us all on the same equal

  1876. footing under the cross.

1877. So we don't ignore our

  1878. culture, ethnic, gender

  1879. differences.

1880. It's just the cross eclipses

  1881. everything.

  1882. We are all justified.

  1883. We are all redeemed.

  1884. We are all adopted,

  1885. spirit and dwelt, new

1886. creation, citizens of a new

  1887. Jerusalem.

1888. And it's all because of what

1889. Christ has done for us.

1890. We are a new gospel

  1891. community.

  1892. And we've been given a whole

  1893. new social value system.

1894. Our identity now informs how

1895. we relate to one another in

  1896. the gospel.

1897. We live out the gospel by

1898. keeping in step with the

1899. truth of the gospel by the

1900. power of the Holy Spirit.

1901. We've been called out from

  1902. the world.

1903. We've called into the family

  1904. of God.

1905. We are new creations who live

  1906. by a new rule.

1907. Love your neighbor and it's

  1908. completely countercultural.

1909. So we must be loving one

  1910. another regardless of our

  1911. similarities and differences

  1912. socially.

1913. Our tendency as human beings

1914. is to, of the flesh,

1915. gravitate to those who are like

  1916. us in the flesh.

  1917. They're the people we're most

  1918. familiar and comfortable with.

1919. But the gospel changes all of

  1920. that stuff.

1921. Instead of allowing our flesh

1922. to gravitationally pull us in

1923. the flesh to those like us

1924. socially, the Spirit compels us

1925. to move towards other people

1926. unlike us, but we are united

  1927. with in Christ.

  1928. It's a gospel social system.

  1929. Value system.

1930. What is striking to me about

  1931. Galatians 5, 13 through 6, 10

1932. is that the conflict between the

1933. flesh and the Spirit gets

1934. played out in the context

  1935. of relationships.

1936. We must be constantly, as we

1937. move forward as a church,

1938. given the uniqueness of where

1939. we're at, we love where we're at.

1940. We love the people who our God

  1941. is bringing.

1942. We must be constantly working

1943. to maintain the unity of the

1944. Spirit and the bond of peace

1945. because we are all one in Christ.

1946. We are a gospel community in

1947. motion, walking by the Spirit.

  1948. Here's what's going to result

1949. from that we're trusting God

  1950. for.

1951. We're going to experience deeper,

  1952. richer gospel relationships with

1953. people who we're united to in

1954. Christ, but we are different from

  1955. culturally.

  1956. That is richness.

1957. It's got to get played out in

  1958. specifics.

1959. There's going to be greater peace.

1960. We're not going to be biting and

1961. devouring one another because of

  1962. our differences.

1963. We're going to be restoring one

  1964. other, caught in trespasses,

1965. regardless of you, rich or poor.

  1966. Bearing one another's burdens.

  1967. It's going to culminate in a

1968. corporate boasting in the cross

1969. because only God does things like

  1970. that.

1971. When it unites a people who are

  1972. different from each other

1973. culturally and unites them in such

  1975. everything.

1976. It becomes our governing reality as a

  1979. sisters.

1980. A new gospel community that has been

1981. brokered by the blood of Jesus.

1982. Galatians is all about the gospel.

1983. The gospel of Jesus Christ alone

1984. frees us from slavery to sin so that

1985. we together can live by the spirit for

  1986. God.

1987. Paul begins this letter by issuing a

1988. curse on all those who distorted the

1989. gospel and made it a dud.

1990. And he closes with blessing all those

1991. in 616 who have embraced the new

1992. gospel rule and have been united in

  1993. Christ Jesus.

  1994. Look at that.

  1995. Look at that blessing.

1996. As for all who walk by this rule,

1997. all of what God has done for us in

1998. Christ Jesus, peace and mercy be upon

1999. them and upon the Israel of God.

2000. So Christ the King Church, as we move

  2004. It will corrupt.

2005. We've got to fight with the gospel.

2006. Our new gospel identity, you've been

  2007. justified, redeemed, adopted.

2008. That's who you are in our new gospel

  2009. community.

2010. The gospel has given us a whole new

  2011. social value system.

2012. If someone asked you, hey, what's

2013. Christ the King Church all about?

  2014. Two words.

  2015. Christ crucified.

  2016. It's changed everything.

2017. Will you pray with me?

2018. God in heaven, I know this is a lot of

  2019. information to share.

2020. God, would you cause the gospel truths to

2021. find their marks in the hearts of our

  2022. brothers and sisters?

2023. God, would you continue to do a work in

2024. us that causes us to boast in the cross

  2025. alone?

2026. God, would you add to our numbers of

2027. people from various backgrounds so that

2028. together with one voice we can cry out,

  2029. God, would you?

  2030. God, would you?

2031. Oh, praise be the Lord.

2032. He has died on our behalf and our lives

  2033. are His.

2034. In the name of Jesus we pray.

  2035. Amen.
