  1. Well, this past week, I was listening to a 55-0 old recording between Apollo 13 astronaut

  2. Jack Swigert and NASA mission control, Houston.

  3. Swigert, okay, Houston, we've had a problem here.

  4. Houston, this is Houston.

  5. Say again, please.

  6. Swigert, Houston, we've had a problem here.

  7. We've had a main B bus undervolt.

  8. And with that, the Apollo 13 mission shifted from landing on the moon to getting these three astronauts home without dying.

  9. The Apostle John, in 1 John, by the way, John is the disciple whom Jesus loved.

  10. This is the writer of the book of Revelation.

  11. He would have been in his 80s when he wrote this epistle, 1 John.

  12. So if you're not there yet, please turn to 1 John.

  13. Well, he's writing to a group of churches in what's present-day Western Turkey.

  14. These would have been a lot of the same churches in Revelation 2 and 3.

  15. Ephesus, Sardis, Philadelphia, Phrygia, Laodicea.

  16. And he's writing to these Christians in the late first century.

  17. And he's saying, okay, churches, we've got a problem.

  18. The essence of the problem was false teaching.

  19. Now, if you're in 1 John, let me show you.

  20. In 1 John 2, verse 26, look what he says.

    1 John 2:26

  21. And now, little children, oops, I write these things to you about those.

  22. This is verse 26.

  23. I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

  24. And look at chapter 4, verse 1.

  25. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.

  26. For many false prophets have gone out into the world.

  27. So there was this influence on these churches in Western Turkey at the end of the first century of these false teachers.

  28. In the false teaching was running along three different lines.

  29. We see it in chapter 3, verse 7.

  30. Little children, let no one deceive you.

  31. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous as he is righteous.

  32. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil.

  33. From the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

  34. So here's the lie that was going on.

  35. The lie was going, hey, you can be a follower of Jesus and do whatever you want in your lifestyle.

  36. It doesn't matter.

  37. That was the lie.

  38. That was the deception.

  39. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want, with whoever you want.

  40. It doesn't matter.

  41. The second line of deception we see in chapter 2, verse 9.

  42. Whoever says he's in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

  43. If you claim to be a follower of Jesus, walking in the light of God, and yet hate your brother,

  44. whether that's some kind of flat-out denial or some kind of downplaying,

  45. it's a lie.

  46. What we'll see as we move through 1 John is we must be loving one another, those born of God.

  47. So that's the second lie.

  48. But the primary root falsehood we see in chapter 4, verses 2 and 3.

  49. We read,

  50. By this you know the Spirit of God.

  51. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

  52. And every spirit that does not confess Jesus has come in the flesh is not from God.

  53. The root issue, the falsehood that was the kind of the headwaters of all these other lies,

  54. was a denial that Jesus had come in the flesh.

  55. A denial of the incarnation.

  56. Okay, churches, we've got a problem.

  57. Today, there is a downplaying or denying even of the need to live moral, holy lives in obedience to Jesus.

  58. Today, there is a downplaying and even a denying of the need to love all who've been born of God.

  59. And certainly today, there is a denial of who Jesus truly is,

  60. whether that's that He's fully God or fully man or both fully God and fully man.

  61. Then there are denials.

  62. I mean, that's why we have cults.

  63. Jehovah's Witnesses deny the deity of Jesus.

  64. In the first century, the Apostle John writes into this problem.

  65. That's why we have this epistle, this letter.

  66. He's writing to all these churches.

  67. It's a circular letter.

  68. He's seeking to pastor them through this problem.

  69. But it's more complicated than what I've told you,

  70. because look at chapter 2, verse 19.

  71. They went out from us, but they were not of us.

  72. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

  73. But they went out.

  74. The church had been splintering.

  75. People were leaving over these issues.

  76. I don't know about you, but if I was living in the first century and seeing this happen in my own church,

  77. with people I love, I'd be discouraged, shocked,

  78. questioning whether this whole Christianity thing is true,

  79. and questioning whether I was truly born of God.

  80. John writes to assure these Christians in these churches in the first century and us

  81. of who Jesus truly is and what it means to belong to him,

  82. which now brings us to verses 1 through 4.

  83. In 1 John 1, 1 through 4,

  84. John starts this letter seeking to convince these churches of this one truth.

  85. Jesus is our life.

  86. Five points.

  87. You can see it in your bulletin.

  88. Five points to help you see the case John is making,

  89. that this Jesus is our life.

  90. You got life?

  91. You got Jesus?

  92. First point.

  93. This Jesus is fully God.

  94. Notice where John begins his letter.

  95. 1 John 1,

  96. that which was from the beginning.

  97. And we got to ask,

  98. well, which beginning is this beginning?

  99. And it is the beginning.

  100. As in Genesis 1, 1,

  101. in the beginning.

  102. John begins this letter by starting off at creation.

  103. Why start there?

  104. Look at the end of 1, 1.

  105. Concerning the word of life.

  106. That which was at the beginning concerning the word of life.

  107. Remember John 1, 1?

  108. The gospel of John?

  109. In the beginning was the word,

  110. and the word was with God,

  111. and the word was God.

  112. That word, word,

  113. is the Greek word logos.

  114. Ultimate expression.

  115. The full and final communication of reality.

  116. It's a reference to Jesus.

  117. He is the full and final expression of God.

  118. And notice,

  119. at the end of verse 1,

  120. it is,

  121. he is the word of life.

  122. That word life is repeated a few times

  123. in these first two verses.

  124. And what's being said here

  125. is that Jesus is the full and final expression of God,

  126. the eternally existent,

  127. second person of the Trinity,

  128. and the source of eternal life.

  129. And not just length of days.

  130. Quality of life.

  131. I have come,

  132. I came,

  133. that they might have life,

  134. and might have it abundantly,

  135. John 10, 10.

  136. What's interesting about Jesus

  137. in that little phrase,

  138. eternal life,

  139. is how he defines it.

  140. If you flip back in your Bibles

  141. to the gospel of John,

  142. to John chapter 17,

    John 17 chapter mention

  143. in verse 3,

  144. Jesus is praying a prayer

  145. to his heavenly Father.

  146. It's the high priestly prayer.

  147. And he defines eternal life for us.

  148. And this is eternal life.

  149. That they know you,

  150. the only true God,

  151. and Jesus Christ,

  152. whom you have sent.

  153. That they know you.

  154. What is striking about this definition

  155. of eternal life

  156. is that he defines eternal life

  157. as in terms of being

  158. in relationship with God.

  159. To know God.

  160. And Jesus.

  161. Through Jesus.

  162. So in chapter 1, verse 2,

  163. we have the word of life,

  164. which is the eternal life.

  165. Did you see that?

  166. Let testify to it

  167. and proclaim to you

  168. the eternal life.

  169. And this eternal life

  170. was with the Father.

  171. Distinct from God the Father,

  172. yet fully God.

  173. We're in the deep end of the pool.

  174. Verse 3,

  175. we learn that the word of life

  176. is not only distinct

  177. from the Father,

  178. but he goes

  179. by a name.

  180. Jesus Christ.

  181. John starts his letter

  182. in the beginning

  183. showing us that Jesus

  184. is fully God.

  185. Apparently,

  186. the late, great coach

  187. Vince Lombardi

  188. started every

  189. Green Bay Packers season

  190. with a team meeting

  191. at which he would

  192. hold up a football

  193. and say something

  194. to the extent of,

  195. this is a football.

  196. And what he would be saying

  197. is it all starts with this.

  198. This ball is the object

  199. of winning

  200. or losing the game.

  201. The Apostle John

  202. is pointing to the

  203. eternally existent

  204. second person

  205. of the Trinity,

  206. the Son,

  207. Jesus Christ,

  208. and he's saying

  209. it all starts

  210. with Him.

  211. Do you know

  212. what it would mean

  213. for your salvation

  214. if Jesus was not

  215. fully God?

  216. Your sins would not

  217. be forgiven.

  218. Because we sin

  219. against a holy,

  220. eternal God,

  221. we must pay

  222. a just

  223. and eternal penalty.

  224. And the only payment

  225. to satisfy

  226. God's eternal wrath

  227. is an eternally

  228. just

  229. and satisfying payment.

  230. What John

  231. will later say,

  232. you'll use the word

  233. propitiation

  234. for that.

  235. But because Jesus

  236. is fully God,

  237. His payment

  238. on the cross

  239. for your sins

  240. and mine

  241. have completely

  242. satisfied

  243. God's eternal wrath.

  244. there is therefore

  245. now no condemnation

  246. for those who

  247. are in Christ Jesus.

  248. Because God's wrath

  249. has been paid

  250. in full.

  251. This Jesus,

  252. He is fully God

  253. and this Jesus

  254. is our life.

  255. Point two,

  256. this Jesus

  257. is fully man.

  258. Not only is Jesus

  259. fully God,

  260. He is fully man.

  261. If you're part

  262. of King's place,

  263. totally God,

  264. totally man.

  265. Remember,

  266. this was the

  267. issue at hand

  268. in this region

  269. in the first century.

  270. There was heresy

  271. saying that Jesus

  272. who had not come

  273. and was part,

  274. became flesh.

  275. So look what John

  276. explicitly does

  277. in chapter one,

  278. verse two.

  279. The life,

  280. the word of life,

  281. was made

  282. manifest.

  283. And we have

  284. seen it

  285. and testified to it

  286. and proclaimed to you

  287. the eternal life

  288. which was with the

  289. Father

  290. and was made

  291. manifest

  292. to us.

  293. That little phrase,

  294. that verb,

  295. made manifest,

  296. is saying something

  297. really important.

  298. this eternal life

  299. which was

  300. with the Father

  301. has now been

  302. made manifest

  303. to us.

  304. The us,

  305. of course,

  306. if you're wondering,

  307. is the apostle

  308. John speaking

  309. on behalf

  310. of all the other

  311. apostles sent out

  312. by Jesus

  313. who had seen Him,

  314. touched Him,

  315. sent out by Him.

  316. But what is this

  317. made manifest

  318. business?

  319. John is taking

  320. his apostolic

  321. bazooka,

  322. loading it up

  323. on his shoulder,

  324. setting his sights

  325. on it,

  326. and he's taking

  327. a Christological

  328. doctrine missile,

  329. dropping it

  330. into his bazooka,

  331. and this thing

  332. is a powerful

  333. cluster bomb

  334. of truth

  335. that he's going

  336. to aim at

  337. this false

  338. teaching

  339. of there not

  340. being an incarnation

  341. and he's going

  342. to eradicate it

  343. from these churches.

  344. Look how he does it.

  345. There are seven

  346. statements

  347. in this passage

  348. in which he

  349. makes a case

  350. that there is

  351. in our incarnation.

  352. Look how he does it.

  353. He starts by saying

  354. that which was

  355. from the beginning

  356. which we have

  357. heard

  358. with our own ears,

  359. which we have seen

  360. with our own eyes,

  361. which we

  362. have touched

  363. with our own

  364. hands.

  365. That word touched,

  366. the way to think

  367. about it is

  368. imagine a blind

  369. person going up

  370. to someone

  371. to feel their

  372. face,

  373. to delicately touch

  374. in order to know

  375. and to identify.

  376. It's that kind

  377. of intimate

  378. touching.

  379. You're familiar,

  380. you know

  381. to touch

  382. concerning the

  383. word of life.

  384. The life was

  385. made manifest.

  386. We have seen it.

  387. Verse 3,

  388. we have seen

  389. and heard.

  390. That gets at

  391. what this

  392. made manifest

  393. means.

  394. It's the second

  395. person of the

  396. trinity,

  397. the eternal

  398. word of life

  399. breaking into

  400. time and space

  401. and taking on

  402. flesh that can

  403. be seen,

  404. heard,

  405. and touched.

  406. What John is

  407. talking about

  408. is the incarnation.

  409. John is

  410. claiming,

  411. this is part

  412. of his case,

  413. that he

  414. himself had

  415. personally

  416. sensory

  417. experience

  418. with the

  419. eternal

  420. word of life

  421. made manifest

  422. in the flesh.

  423. John didn't

  424. hear about

  425. Jesus through

  426. a big game

  427. of telephone.

  428. He had

  429. first-hand

  430. experience.

  431. He had

  432. heard and

  433. touched and

  434. saw the

  435. incarnate

  436. eternal

  437. word of life,

  438. Jesus.

  439. And the

  440. emphasis here

  441. is on sight

  442. over and

  443. over again.

  444. Seen,

  445. looked,

  446. saw.

  447. It's an

  448. eyewitness.

  449. Now, if you

  450. wanted to get

  451. credible testimony

  452. in a court of

  453. law to make

  454. your case,

  455. you're going to

  456. find a reliable

  457. eyewitness.

  458. And John

  459. is that.

  460. So what

  461. exactly had

  462. John heard,

  463. touched,

  464. seen?

  465. Let me

  466. remind you

  467. of some

  468. things.

  469. John had

  470. heard all

  471. of Jesus'

  472. teaching.

  473. John was

  474. with Jesus

  475. at the

  476. beginning of

  477. his three-year

  478. itinerant

  479. ministry.

  480. He heard

  481. everything that

  482. Jesus taught

  483. and he saw

  484. people marvel

  485. at his

  486. teaching.

  487. Do you

  488. remember at

  489. the cross

  490. what Jesus

  491. said to

  492. John?

  493. first he

  494. says to

  495. Mary,

  496. behold,

  497. this is

  498. your son

  499. and to

  500. John,

  501. behold,

  502. your mother.

  503. That's the

  504. John writing

  505. this.

  506. He heard

  507. that.

  508. Just think

  509. about what

  510. John had

  511. touched.

  512. According to

  513. John 13,

  514. it was John

  515. who had

  516. leaned against

  517. Jesus at

  518. the last

  519. supper.

  520. Tender.

  521. It was

  522. John who

  523. Jesus spoke

  524. to after

  525. his resurrection

  526. and said,

  527. see my

  528. hands,

  529. my feet,

  530. that it is

  531. I myself,

  532. touch and

  533. see.

  534. This John

  535. had touched

  536. the resurrected

  537. body of

  538. Jesus Christ.

  539. Just imagine

  540. what John

  541. had seen.

  542. Miracles,

  543. Jesus' death,

  544. burial,

  545. Jesus'

  546. resurrection,

  547. Jesus'

  548. ascension.

  549. And

  550. could you

  551. imagine what

  552. he had seen?

  553. He's writing

  554. 50 years

  555. afterwards

  556. and what's in

  557. his mind

  558. is as clear

  559. as day.

  560. he had heard

  561. and touched

  562. and seen.

  563. Remember that

  564. Vince Lombardi

  565. quote?

  566. This is a

  567. football.

  568. John is

  569. pointing to

  570. Jesus and

  571. saying,

  572. this Jesus

  573. is fully

  574. God and

  575. fully man.

  576. It all

  577. starts with

  578. him.

  579. If Jesus

  580. were not fully

  581. man, do you

  582. know what that

  583. would mean

  584. for your

  585. salvation?

  586. salvation,

  587. it would

  588. mean that

  589. he would

  590. not have

  591. been able

  592. to fully

  593. represent you

  594. as a

  595. perfect,

  596. sinless

  597. representative

  598. on the

  599. cross.

  600. It means

  601. he would

  602. not be able

  603. to identify

  604. with you

  605. in every

  606. single way.

  607. It means

  608. that his

  609. perfect life

  610. of righteousness

  611. would have

  612. been a

  613. sham.

  614. You can't

  615. impute that

  616. to someone

  617. now.

  618. He lived

  619. a sinless

  620. perfect life

  621. because he

  622. was human.

  623. He could

  624. give it

  625. to us.

  626. The fact

  627. that Jesus

  628. is fully

  629. God and

  630. fully man

  631. makes him

  632. the perfect

  633. mediator

  634. between God

  635. and man.

  636. He is

  637. alone the

  638. perfect

  639. savior

  640. of sinful

  641. men and

  642. women.

  643. There is

  644. therefore

  645. salvation

  646. in no one

  647. else.

  648. Because this

  649. Jesus is

  650. fully God

  651. and fully

  652. man.

  653. The eternal

  654. word of

  655. life was

  656. made manifest

  657. in the

  658. flesh to

  659. be our

  660. one and

  661. only savior.

  662. This Jesus

  663. is fully

  664. man.

  665. This Jesus

  666. is our

  667. life.

  668. Which brings

  669. me to point

  670. three.

  671. This Jesus

  672. is who we

  673. proclaim.

  674. He is

  675. our message.

  676. What do you

  677. tell people?

  678. What are you

  679. telling people?

  680. Where are you

  681. telling them to

  682. find life?

  683. Do you notice

  684. in chapter 1

  685. verse 2

  686. life was made

  687. manifest and we

  688. have seen it

  689. and testify to it

  690. and proclaim

  691. to you the

  692. eternal life.

  693. John Stott

  694. helped me see

  695. this this week.

  696. That word testify

  697. means to have

  698. a personal

  699. experience and

  700. you tell somebody

  701. about it.

  702. So maybe you're

  703. thinking right

  704. now well man

  705. I haven't seen

  706. Jesus in person.

  707. I haven't heard

  708. his audible

  709. voice.

  710. I haven't touched

  711. him.

  712. I don't have

  713. personal first

  714. hand experience

  715. like that.

  716. Well maybe you

  717. don't but if

  718. you have bowed

  719. your knee to

  720. Jesus you have

  721. had a personal

  722. experience with

  723. Jesus.

  724. you are not

  725. the same of

  726. what you were

  727. before coming

  728. to Jesus.

  729. You've been

  730. radically changed.

  731. You have a

  732. personal experience.

  733. You've got

  734. something to say

  735. because he's

  736. changed you.

  737. That word

  738. proclaim carries

  739. a sense of

  740. commission of

  741. being sent out.

  742. You may be

  743. saying well I'm

  744. not an apostle

  745. like John but

  746. you have been

  747. sent out by the

  748. risen Jesus by

  749. virtue of the

  750. great commission.

  751. Go make

  752. disciples.

  753. We're all sent

  754. out.

  755. You have

  756. experienced him

  757. and you've been

  758. sent out by him.

  759. That's why we

  760. don't proclaim

  761. ourselves but

  762. him.

  763. Fully God

  764. fully man who

  765. was sent to die

  766. in the place of

  767. sinners.

  768. That's the

  769. message of the

  770. apostle John and

  771. all of the

  772. apostles.

  773. That's the

  774. message entrusted

  775. to us that we

  776. proclaim to

  777. others and call

  778. everyone everywhere

  779. in light of

  780. that Jesus.

  781. That Jesus

  782. repent and

  783. believe.

  784. The main verb

  785. of these four

  786. verses shows up

  787. in verse 3.

  788. That which we

  789. have seen and

  790. heard we

  791. proclaim also to

  792. you.

  793. Proclaim.

  794. Announce.

  795. We proclaim

  796. Jesus.

  797. Why?

  798. Why him?

  799. He's the

  800. life.

  801. The eternal

  802. life.

  803. The word of

  804. life.

  805. And he is the

  806. hope of all

  807. nations because

  808. he alone offers

  809. eternal life both

  810. in terms of length

  811. and quality.

  812. Salvation is in

  813. no one else.

  814. Remember John

  815. 17 3.

  816. Salvation is

  817. talked about in

  818. terms of

  819. relationship to

  820. God.

  821. We announce

  822. Jesus to

  823. people to

  824. repent and

  825. to believe so

  826. they enter into

  827. a right

  828. relationship, a

  829. saving relationship

  830. with the living

  831. God through the

  832. Son.

  833. Eternal life is

  834. a personal

  835. relationship with

  836. God through

  837. Jesus.

  838. So let me ask

  839. you a question.

  840. What are you

  841. telling people?

  842. Who are you

  843. talking about?

  844. Who are you

  845. telling people to

  846. go find life

  847. in?

  848. Flip back in

  849. your Bibles to

  850. 1 John 5.

  851. Maybe this will

  852. make it all the

  853. more clear.

  854. 1 John 5

  855. 11 through

  856. 13.

  857. And this is the

  858. testimony that

  859. God gave us

  860. eternal life.

  861. And this life is

  862. in his Son.

  863. Whoever has

  864. the Son has

  865. life.

  866. Whoever does

  867. not have the

  868. Son of God

  869. does not have

  870. life.

  871. I write these

  872. things to you

  873. who believe in

  874. the name of

  875. the Son of

  876. God that you

  877. may know that

  878. you have eternal

  879. life.

  880. This Jesus is

  881. who we proclaim.

  882. He is our

  883. message because

  884. he is the

  885. life.

  886. This Jesus is

  887. our life.

  888. Point four.

  889. This Jesus is

  890. who we share.

  891. in verse three

  892. we have the

  893. first of two

  894. what's called

  895. purpose statements.

  896. We see them in

  897. the words so

  898. that.

  899. Look with me.

  900. Verse three.

  901. That which we

  902. have seen and

  903. heard we proclaim

  904. also to you so

  905. that for the

  906. purpose of you

  907. too may have

  908. fellowship with us

  909. and indeed our

  910. fellowship is with

  911. the Father and

  912. with his Son

  913. Jesus Christ.

  914. The purpose of

  915. our proclaiming

  916. Jesus is

  917. fellowship according

  918. to this verse.

  919. So what is

  920. fellowship?

  921. It's the Greek

  922. word koinonia

  923. and it's

  924. describing a

  925. kind of

  926. relationship.

  927. A kind of

  928. relationship with

  929. someone else that

  930. is deep and

  931. meaningful and

  932. aimed.

  933. It's deep

  934. because when you

  935. have koinonia

  936. with someone

  937. you're getting

  938. down to what

  939. matters most.

  940. What's most

  941. important and

  942. it's meaningful

  943. because not only

  944. are you sharing

  945. what's most

  946. important.

  947. People are

  948. sharing with

  949. you what's

  950. most important

  951. to them.

  952. It's so good.

  953. It's so meaningful

  954. but it's also

  955. aimed.

  956. What matters

  957. most aims

  958. you.

  959. Let me give

  960. you two examples

  961. of this from

  962. this past week

  963. in my life.

  964. Thursday night

  965. I had dinner

  966. with a brother

  967. and if you

  968. walked into

  969. the restaurant

  970. and saw us

  971. sitting together

  972. you'd be like

  973. what are they

  974. doing together?

  975. Different

  976. ethnicity than

  977. me.

  978. Wears different

  979. kinds of

  980. clothes.

  981. Speaks different

  982. than I speak.

  983. He's from a

  984. different part of

  985. the country.

  986. He's experienced

  987. all sorts of

  988. hardship that I

  989. have never

  990. dreamed of.

  991. But you know

  992. what we had in

  993. common?

  994. The word of

  995. life.

  996. Jesus.

  997. Jesus.

  998. And all of

  999. those differences

  1000. were petty

  1001. little differences

  1002. because we got

  1003. to fellowship

  1004. and together.

  1005. He encouraged

  1006. me.

  1007. I encouraged

  1008. him.

  1009. So here's this

  1010. person that I

  1011. would have no

  1012. business with

  1013. outside of Jesus.

  1014. And here we are

  1015. sharing a meal

  1016. together.

  1017. Talking about

  1018. Jesus.

  1019. another example.

  1020. Yesterday

  1021. morning at

  1022. 625 AM I'm

  1023. doing my

  1024. devotion.

  1025. I'm writing

  1026. 2 Corinthians

  1027. 12 9.

  1028. Talking about

  1029. his grace is

  1030. sufficient for

  1031. you.

  1032. For in

  1033. weakness his

  1034. power is made

  1035. perfect.

  1036. I'm writing

  1037. that bling

  1038. bling bling

  1039. to my parents.

  1040. Hey mom and

  1041. dad.

  1042. Dad.

  1043. Dad.

  1044. Dad.

  1045. Dad.

  1046. Dad.

  1047. Dad.

  1048. Dad.

  1049. Dad.

  1050. Dad.

  1051. Dad.

  1052. They got their

  1053. DNA.

  1054. I grew up in

  1055. their home.

  1056. Went on

  1057. vacations.

  1058. They're things I

  1059. do because they

  1060. built them into

  1061. me.

  1062. These are some of

  1063. the closest people

  1064. in my life.

  1065. We've got a lot

  1066. in common but you

  1067. know what we got

  1068. to talk about?

  1069. Jesus.

  1070. What means most

  1071. to me about my

  1072. relationship with

  1073. my parents is

  1074. that they love

  1075. Jesus.

  1076. I don't take

  1077. that for granted.

  1078. And so here we

  1079. have in the span

  1080. of 48 hours

  1081. me fellowshipping

  1082. with a man

  1083. it makes no sense

  1084. outside of Jesus

  1085. and then here I

  1086. am fellowshipping

  1087. with my mom and

  1088. dad.

  1089. We could have

  1090. talked about a

  1091. whole lot of

  1092. different stuff.

  1093. There's so much

  1094. in common

  1095. but what matters

  1096. most is Jesus.

  1097. Jesus.

  1098. Jesus.

  1099. Jesus.

  1100. Jesus.

  1101. Jesus.

  1102. Jesus.

  1103. Jesus.

  1104. Jesus.

  1105. Jesus.

  1106. Jesus.

  1107. When it comes

  1108. to fellowship

  1109. Jesus is the

  1110. life center

  1111. of our

  1112. relationships.

  1113. And in this

  1114. passage there's a

  1115. horizontal dimension

  1116. so that you too

  1117. may have fellowship

  1118. with us.

  1119. So we

  1120. experience a

  1121. degree of

  1122. fellowship based

  1123. upon whether

  1124. either of us

  1125. are loving

  1126. Jesus.

  1127. fellowship.

  1128. And there's also

  1129. this vertical

  1130. component and

  1131. indeed our

  1132. fellowship is with

  1133. the Father and

  1134. with his son

  1135. Jesus Christ.

  1136. Fellowship in

  1137. verse 3 is the

  1138. way John is

  1139. talking about

  1140. salvation.

  1141. We have a

  1142. relationship with

  1143. God and his

  1144. son.

  1145. that vertical

  1146. fellowship is a

  1147. salvific

  1148. relationship.

  1149. And it flows

  1150. out into our

  1151. relationships with

  1152. others.

  1153. So our

  1154. fellowship with

  1155. one another

  1156. begins with our

  1157. fellowship with

  1158. God our

  1159. Father through

  1160. the Son.

  1161. And as we go

  1162. through 1 John

  1163. you're going to

  1164. notice that this

  1165. fellowship is spoken

  1166. of in familial

  1167. terms.

  1168. Father,

  1169. Son,

  1170. Children.

  1171. We're one

  1172. family in the

  1173. Lord.

  1174. United with

  1175. Jesus our

  1176. life.

  1177. So what are you

  1178. focusing on when

  1179. you get together

  1180. with other

  1181. Christians?

  1182. There's a place

  1183. to talk about

  1184. football.

  1185. There's a place

  1186. to talk about

  1187. food, family,

  1188. stuff going on

  1189. at church,

  1190. things going on

  1191. politically in the

  1192. country.

  1193. Of course there's

  1194. things to talk

  1195. about like that.

  1196. But what are you

  1197. getting to what

  1198. matters most?

  1199. Are you getting

  1200. to Jesus?

  1201. What he's doing

  1202. in your life?

  1203. Are you finding

  1204. your time with

  1205. other Christians

  1206. building you up

  1207. in the Lord?

  1208. Or is it a

  1209. missed opportunity?

  1210. How do we do

  1211. this together?

  1212. Well it begins

  1213. with us all

  1214. each abiding

  1215. in Jesus.

  1216. That's where it

  1217. all starts.

  1218. Going deep

  1219. with Jesus in

  1220. prayer.

  1221. Receiving

  1222. meaningful words

  1223. from him

  1224. about him

  1225. and lining

  1226. up what

  1227. matters most

  1228. to his

  1229. mission.

  1230. And when we're

  1231. all doing that

  1232. together,

  1233. we're going to

  1234. fellowship in

  1235. Jesus.

  1236. This Jesus

  1237. is who we

  1238. share.

  1239. This Jesus,

  1240. he is our

  1241. life.

  1242. Five,

  1243. this Jesus

  1244. is our joy.

  1245. our joy

  1246. producing

  1247. life.

  1248. Second purpose

  1249. clause is in

  1250. verse four,

  1251. and we were

  1252. writing,

  1253. we are writing

  1254. these things

  1255. so that

  1256. our joy

  1257. may be

  1258. complete.

  1259. The hour

  1260. in verse four

  1261. is John's

  1262. joy as well

  1263. as the

  1264. Christians in

  1265. all of these

  1266. churches in

  1267. western Turkey

  1268. in the end of

  1269. the first century.

  1270. Their joy.

  1271. It's an

  1272. altogether

  1273. our joy.

  1274. A shared

  1275. joy.

  1276. What is

  1277. joy?

  1278. Helpful

  1279. distinction is

  1280. talking about

  1281. happiness as

  1282. a gladness

  1283. that's dependent

  1284. upon your

  1285. circumstances.

  1286. As your

  1287. circumstances

  1288. change,

  1289. so does your

  1290. happiness.

  1291. Joy is a

  1292. gladness

  1293. that's

  1294. dependent

  1295. on Jesus.

  1296. and because

  1297. Jesus is the

  1298. same today,

  1299. yesterday,

  1300. and forever,

  1301. it's possible

  1302. to find

  1303. fullness of

  1304. joy in

  1305. him,

  1306. regardless of

  1307. how hard

  1308. or unhappy

  1309. your circumstances

  1310. are,

  1311. because your

  1312. joy is in

  1313. Jesus.

  1314. In John

  1315. 15,

  1316. Jesus talks

  1317. about him

  1318. being a vine

  1319. and we are

  1320. the branches.

  1321. If we

  1322. abide in

  1323. him and

  1324. him in

  1325. us,

  1326. we will

  1327. bear much

  1328. fruit.

  1329. Goes on to

  1330. talk about

  1331. how that

  1332. fruit

  1333. glorifies

  1334. the

  1335. father in

  1336. heaven.

  1337. If you

  1338. would turn

  1339. to John

    John 15:11

  1340. 15,

  1341. verse 11,

  1342. I want

  1343. you to

  1344. see something.

  1345. What

  1346. comes of

  1347. abiding

  1348. in Jesus?

  1349. Verse 11,

  1350. these things

  1351. I have spoken

  1352. to you,

  1353. I am the

  1354. vine,

  1355. you are the

  1356. branches,

  1357. if you

  1358. abide in

  1359. me and

  1360. I in

  1361. you,

  1362. you will

  1363. bear much

  1364. fruit.

  1365. These things

  1366. I have spoken

  1367. to you,

  1368. that purpose

  1369. clause,

  1370. my joy,

  1371. my joy,

  1372. Jesus'

  1373. joy,

  1374. may be in

  1375. you and

  1376. that your

  1377. joy may

  1378. be full,

  1379. complete.

  1380. Full and

  1381. complete joy

  1382. comes as a

  1383. result of

  1384. abiding in

  1385. Jesus,

  1386. the eternal

  1387. word of

  1388. life made

  1389. manifest in

  1390. the flesh.

  1391. Which means

  1392. this,

  1393. no one can

  1394. steal your

  1395. joy,

  1396. but you

  1397. can shoot

  1398. yourself in

  1399. the foot.

  1400. We can

  1401. believe lies.

  1402. For example,

  1403. if you believe

  1404. that Jesus

  1405. is somehow

  1406. less fully

  1407. God or

  1408. less fully

  1409. man,

  1410. you will

  1411. have diminished

  1412. joy.

  1413. Because

  1414. fullness of

  1415. joy is

  1416. believing in

  1417. who Jesus

  1418. fully is.

  1419. fully God,

  1420. fully man.

  1421. If you

  1422. think somehow

  1423. that obedience

  1424. to Jesus in

  1425. all areas of

  1426. your life is

  1427. somehow optional,

  1428. you can do

  1429. whatever you

  1430. want,

  1431. whenever you

  1432. want to do

  1433. it,

  1434. you will have

  1435. diminished

  1436. joy.

  1437. Because true

  1438. joy,

  1439. fullness of

  1440. joy,

  1441. is fully

  1442. obeying Jesus

  1443. in all that

  1444. he commanded.

  1445. His commandments

  1446. are not

  1447. burdensome.

  1448. We love

  1449. him with

  1450. our obedience.

  1451. if you

  1452. are not

  1453. abounding

  1454. in love

  1455. for those

  1456. born of

  1457. God,

  1458. it will

  1459. result in

  1460. diminished

  1461. joy.

  1462. Because our

  1463. fullness of

  1464. joy is to

  1465. love others

  1466. as Jesus

  1467. for the joy

  1468. set before

  1469. him,

  1470. loved us

  1471. by giving

  1472. himself for

  1473. us.

  1474. That's

  1475. the these

  1476. things

  1477. he's writing

  1478. about.

  1479. Believe all

  1480. truth about

  1481. Jesus,

  1482. fullness of

  1483. joy.

  1484. Obey all

  1485. the commands

  1486. Jesus has

  1487. called us

  1488. to obey,

  1489. fullness of

  1490. joy.

  1491. Abound in

  1492. love for

  1493. all those

  1494. born of

  1495. God through

  1496. the blood

  1497. of Jesus,

  1498. fullness of

  1499. joy.

  1500. This

  1501. Jesus is

  1502. our life.

  1503. He's our

  1504. joy.

  1505. joy.

  1506. The

  1507. apostle

  1508. John is

  1509. basically

  1510. saying,

  1511. okay,

  1512. churches,

  1513. we've got a

  1514. problem.

  1515. There's a

  1516. false

  1517. teaching.

  1518. There's

  1519. another

  1520. Jesus being

  1521. preached.

  1522. So he

  1523. says,

  1524. this Jesus

  1525. I preach

  1526. is fully

  1527. God.

  1528. This

  1529. Jesus is

  1530. fully man.

  1531. This

  1532. Jesus is

  1533. whom we

  1534. proclaim.

  1535. This

  1536. Jesus is

  1537. who we

  1538. share,

  1539. and this

  1540. Jesus is

  1541. our joy.

  1542. Christ

  1543. the King

  1544. Church,

  1545. this

  1546. Jesus is

  1547. our life.

  1548. Let's

  1549. pray.

  1550. God in

  1551. heaven,

  1552. would you

  1553. do a

  1554. work by

  1555. your spirit

  1556. in us

  1557. and that

  1558. we see

  1559. Jesus fully,

  1560. that we

  1561. obey him

  1562. and all

  1563. that he

  1564. commands,

  1565. that we

  1566. love one

  1567. another

  1568. regardless of

  1569. what each

  1570. of us

  1571. looks like,

  1572. or do

  1573. or live

  1574. with an

  1575. abounding

  1576. love.

  1577. All for

  1578. the glory

  1579. of Jesus

  1580. and the

  1581. joy that's

  1582. in him.

  1583. In your name

  1584. we pray.

  1585. Amen.
