  1. Holy God, there's no one like you.

  2. There's none besides you.

  3. Open our eyes to see your wonder.

  4. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh upon us.

  5. Melt us.

  6. Hold us.

  7. Fill us.

  8. Use us.

  9. God, give us a hunger for holiness.

  10. For you are holy.

  11. Spirit of God, would you do your loving, convicting work this morning.

  12. And I pray that every sinner in the room would not fear your convicting work.

  13. For perfect love casts out fear.

  14. Pray this in Jesus' name.

  15. Amen.

  16. If you would open up your Bibles to 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  17. We're going to be looking at 1 John 1, 5 through 2, 2.

  18. And I have left...

  19. Nope.

  20. Nope.

  21. I have left my introduction on my pew.

  22. Have you ever felt like you've been taken for granted?

  23. Maybe there's something that you uniquely contribute to your family.

  24. Maybe you uniquely contribute something to your workplace or your school, your friend group, or maybe it's your church.

  25. But that unique contribution goes unnoticed.

  26. It goes underappreciated, undervalued.

  27. You ever feel that way?

  28. Do you think it's possible to take God for granted?

  29. God's holiness.

  30. God's holiness is his moral purity.

  31. It's his moral brilliance.

  32. It's his squeaky clean character.

  33. That if you're in his presence, you will start to feel a little dirty.

  34. God's like the sun.

  35. And his moral brilliance shines bright.

  36. And it exposes the darkness of sin.

  37. Which is moral impurity.

  38. Which is defilement.

  39. Have you been taking God's holiness for granted?

  40. Here's how you can know.

  41. When was the last time you realized that some thought of yours that originated in you,

  42. some feeling that came out of you,

  43. that some word that shot out,

  44. that some action or inaction

  45. was actually a personal affront to your holy God?

  46. When was the last time you realized that?

  47. Or when was the last time you personally admitted to God himself

  48. that some thing that came out of you,

  49. that you are responsible for,

  50. was sin against him?

  51. Are you taking God's holiness for granted?

  52. Jesus, who is fully God and fully man,

  53. we learned that last week,

  54. he is the incarnate eternal word of life.

  55. Well, this Jesus shed his blood

  56. so that sinners like us

  57. can enter into a personal relationship

  58. with a holy, brilliant God like him.

  59. And that fellowship with God

  60. is marked by joy,

  61. and marked by hope,

  62. and marked by clarity,

  63. and marked by confidence.

  64. There's peace,

  65. and there's peace.

  66. But sometimes it gets uncomfortable.

  67. Because of the fact of the matter is,

  68. we are still sinful,

  69. brothers and sisters in Christ,

  70. and we have come into a real relationship

  71. with the holy God.

  72. Here's what I'm going to argue this morning.

  73. God's holy brilliance

  74. will continually expose

  75. our sinful darkness

  76. and show us our need for Jesus.

  77. God's holy brilliance

  78. will continually expose

  79. our sinful darkness

  80. resident in us,

  81. and it's uncomfortable,

  82. and it shows us

  83. our ongoing need for Jesus.

  84. I want you to see that

  85. from 1 John 1-5

  86. through chapter 2, verse 2.

  87. And we're going to make

  88. this known,

  89. I want to help you to see it

  90. by two moves in the sermon.

  91. The first move

  92. is point number one,

  93. one holy message,

  94. and then the second move,

  95. I'll tell you when we get there.

  96. We're going to spend

  97. the bulk of our time

  98. in the second move.

  99. God's holiness

  100. will continually expose

  101. our sinfulness

  102. and show us our need for Jesus.

  103. So, point number one,

  104. one holy message.

  105. Look at chapter 1, verse 5.

  106. This is the message

  107. that we have heard from Him

  108. and proclaim to you

  109. that God is light,

  110. and in Him

  111. is no darkness at all.

  112. In verse 5,

  113. you see the word we,

  114. that's John the Apostle

  115. speaking on behalf

  116. of all the other apostles.

  117. But he says,

  118. I've got a message

  119. I've been telling you.

  120. This is a message

  121. from all the apostles.

  122. And I want you to see

  123. who this message

  124. is actually from.

  125. This is the message

  126. we have heard from Him.

  127. Who is that?

  128. Well, you go back up

  129. in your Bible

  130. to 1 John 1, 1-4,

  131. and you realize

  132. that the Him

  133. is no other than

  134. the incarnate,

  135. eternal word of life,

  136. the second person

  137. of the Trinity,

  138. the Son of God,

  139. Jesus the Christ,

  140. who this John writing

  141. knew personally,

  142. who this John writing,

  143. He heard Him.

  144. This John writing,

  145. saw Him with His own eyes,

  146. and this John

  147. touched Him

  148. with His own hands.

  149. He, the guy writing this,

  150. touched the resurrected body

  151. of Jesus Christ.

  152. Have you ever gotten

  153. a letter in the mail?

  154. And you're like,

  155. how serious should I take this?

  156. And so you look up

  157. at the return address

  158. and you're like,

  159. ah, whatever.

  160. You toss it.

  161. If you're a child here

  162. and you see that letter,

  163. that note is from your grandma

  164. or grandpa,

  165. you're like thinking,

  166. oh, this is going to be good.

  167. You're like,

  168. because it shows us

  169. who the sender is.

  170. The sender of the message

  171. that John is about to tell us

  172. is the incarnate,

  173. eternal word of life,

  174. Jesus Christ.

  175. Which means the message

  176. is really important.

  177. What is this message about?

  178. In 1 John 1.5,

  179. we read what this message is.

  180. That God is light

  181. and in Him,

  182. there is no darkness

  183. at all.

  184. In the Greek,

  185. it's really interesting.

  186. It's like saying,

  187. there is absolutely

  188. none,

  189. none whatsoever

  190. darkness in God at all.

  191. God is light

  192. and in Him,

  193. there is no darkness

  194. whatsoever

  195. is describing

  196. the truth

  197. of God's character.

  198. It's talking about

  199. something that's true

  200. of our God.

  201. It's His holiness,

  202. His moral purity

  203. and it's being described

  204. as a moral brilliance,

  205. a light

  206. in which there is

  207. no darkness.

  208. He's like the sun,

  209. shining in holy brilliance.

  210. If you come into

  211. its presence,

  212. you're going to become

  213. aware of yourself,

  214. your sinfulness.

  215. If you flip back

  216. in your Bibles

  217. to Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  218. if you're not too

  219. familiar with it,

  220. go right into the middle

  221. of your Bible,

  222. you're probably in the Psalms,

  223. and then go right.

  224. You start going right,

  225. you come to Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  226. and Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  227. Isaiah is given

  228. this vision

  229. of God

  230. high and lifted up

  231. in the throne

  232. of the temple.

  233. and around

  234. this God

  235. are these angels.

  236. They're called

  237. seraphim.

  238. They're flaming ones.

  239. And with two wings,

  240. they cover their eyes

  241. and with two wings,

  242. they cover their feet

  243. and with two wings,

  244. they fly

  245. and these seraphim

  246. are calling out

  247. to one another,

  248. holy,

  249. holy,

  250. holy

  251. is the Lord

  252. of hosts.

  253. The whole earth

  254. is full of His glory.

  255. holy.

  256. God

  257. is right now

  258. in heaven

  259. being

  260. exalted

  261. for His

  262. moral brilliance.

  263. Three times.

  264. There's no other

  265. characteristic of God

  266. spoken to God

  267. repeated three times.

  268. Just His holiness.

  269. Unless you think

  270. this is only an

  271. Old Testament phenomenon,

  272. if you roll

  273. to Revelation

    Revelation 4:8

  274. chapter 4

  275. verse 8,

  276. all of these

  277. living creatures

  278. are around the throne

  279. in heaven

  280. and they are calling

  281. out to the one

  282. upon the throne,

  283. holy,

  284. holy,

  285. holy

  286. is the Lord

  287. God Almighty,

  288. He who was

  289. and is

  290. and is to come.

  291. So let me just

  292. take a little sidebar.

  293. God is not

  294. bored

  295. with His

  296. own holiness.

  297. When God

  298. thinks about

  299. His holiness,

  300. He's not

  301. kind of like,

  302. not great,

  303. my holiness.

  304. He's not

  305. disappointed,

  306. His shoulders

  307. don't drop

  308. when He thinks

  309. about His own holiness.

  310. holiness.

  311. He delights

  312. in His own holiness.

  313. He's like,

  314. oh yeah,

  315. holy,

  316. holy,

  317. holy is me.

  318. So let's make sure

  319. we know this.

  320. God is happy

  321. in His holiness.

  322. It brings Him

  323. great joy.

  324. In fact,

  325. He wants to bring

  326. as many people

  327. into this

  328. shared joy

  329. of His

  330. moral

  331. brilliance

  332. as Christ's

  333. blood can gather.

  334. Sidebar two.

  335. There is no

  336. living creature

  337. in the presence

  338. of God

  339. right now

  340. who is

  341. bored

  342. or upset

  343. with the holiness

  344. of God.

  345. Right now

  346. in

  347. heavenly glory,

  348. all of the

  349. occupants

  350. of heaven

  351. are focused

  352. on the one

  353. on the throne

  354. and they are saying

  355. holy,

  356. holy,

  357. holy are you.

  358. God's holiness

  359. is of

  360. incredible value

  361. to God

  362. and to

  363. all of the

  364. angelic hosts

  365. who

  366. glory.

  367. Nobody

  368. in heaven

  369. has taken

  370. His holiness

  371. for granted.

  372. Look what

  373. happens in

  374. verse 5

  375. in Isaiah 6

  376. if you're still

  377. there.

  378. Woe is me

  379. for I am

  380. lost

  381. for I am a

  382. man of

  383. unclean lips

  384. and I dwell

  385. in the midst

  386. of a people

  387. of unclean

  388. lips.

  389. Here we

  390. have

  391. this prophet

  392. who is given

  393. this vision

  394. of God

  395. in His

  396. moral brilliance

  397. and His

  398. reaction

  399. is

  400. woe is

  401. me.

  402. He becomes

  403. acutely aware

  404. of His own

  405. darkness,

  406. His own

  407. sinfulness,

  408. His own

  409. uncleanness,

  410. His own

  411. moral dirtiness,

  412. His own

  413. sinfulness

  414. and His

  415. response

  416. should be

  417. our response

  418. to a holy

  419. God.

  420. This message

  421. that we're

  422. reading about

  423. that John

  424. is saying

  425. is I

  426. heard this

  427. from Jesus,

  428. God is

  429. holy,

  430. there's no

  431. darkness in

  432. Adam Hall.

  433. This is

  434. shining brilliance

  435. that exposes

  436. darkness

  437. and what we

  438. read in 1

  439. Peter 1

  440. 16 is

  441. this same

  442. holy God

  443. who says

  444. I am holy

  445. says to

  446. all of us

  447. you shall

  448. be holy.

  449. You shall

  450. be holy

  451. for I am

  452. holy.

  453. And what

  454. we're reading

  455. here is that

  456. there's no

  457. darkness in

  458. God's character

  459. whatsoever.

  460. And then we

  461. think about

  462. ourselves,

  463. right?

  464. There is

  465. resident

  466. darkness in

  467. me and

  468. in you.

  469. Each of us

  470. has this

  471. sinful nature

  472. producing

  473. sinful thoughts,

  474. sinful feelings,

  475. sinful speech

  476. and actions

  477. and sinful

  478. inactions that

  479. if we're being

  480. completely honest,

  481. we know they

  482. grieve God

  483. and we know

  484. we should care

  485. more about it.

  486. If you're

  487. taking God's

  488. holiness for

  489. granted,

  490. you will be

  491. taking your

  492. own sin for

  493. granted too.

  494. But if you're

  495. taking God's

  496. holiness

  497. seriously as

  498. God himself

  499. takes his

  500. own holiness

  501. seriously,

  502. you will

  503. begin to

  504. take your

  505. own sin

  506. seriously.

  507. And God

  508. does too.

  509. You see,

  510. being in a

  511. relationship with

  512. a holy God

  513. will expose

  514. your sinful

  515. darkness.

  516. So let me

  517. ask you this

  518. question.

  519. Is there a

  520. particular area

  521. of your life

  522. that you know

  523. is sinful

  524. but you've

  525. been rationalizing

  526. it?

  527. You've been

  528. trying to

  529. ignore God's

  530. holiness in

  531. light of it.

  532. You've been

  533. downplaying it.

  534. You're like,

  535. I'm like

  536. everybody else.

  537. It's kind of

  538. like this.

  539. You walk into

  540. your bathroom

  541. and there's

  542. a couple

  543. lights that

  544. are out

  545. around your

  546. bathroom

  547. mirror and

  548. you look

  549. yourself in

  550. the mirror

  551. and you're

  552. like,

  553. man,

  554. you're a

  555. good looking

  556. guy.

  557. And then

  558. you replace

  559. the bulbs

  560. and it gets

  561. really bright.

  562. And then

  563. you start

  564. looking at

  565. yourself and

  566. you're like,

  567. you're not

  568. the beauty

  569. I thought

  570. you were.

  571. Look at

  572. that ugliness.

  573. God's

  574. holiness is

  575. his brilliance

  576. that will

  577. expose our

  578. ugliness just

  579. like a

  580. well-lit

  581. bathroom

  582. mirror.

  583. How do

  584. you respond

  585. to that?

  586. How do

  587. you respond

  588. to sin

  589. in yourself?

  590. What do

  591. you do?

  592. Well, that

  593. brings us to

  594. the second

  595. point of the

  596. sermon.

  597. Two ways

  598. to respond.

  599. John is

  600. very clear

  601. in 1 John

  602. 1, 6

  603. through 2, 22

  604. there are

  605. two ways

  606. to respond

  607. to your

  608. sin when

  609. exposed by

  610. the holiness

  611. of God.

  612. In fact,

  613. there are

  614. two batches.

  615. In

  616. chapter 1,

  617. 6 through

  618. 2, 2,

  619. there are

  620. six if

  621. statements.

  622. But you

  623. can group

  624. them like

  625. John does

  626. into two

  627. groups of

  628. if statements,

  629. two batches.

  630. And the

  631. first set

  632. of if

  633. statements

  634. that we're

  635. going to

  636. look at

  637. are the

  638. response

  639. that you

  640. don't want

  641. to do

  642. in light

  643. of God's

  644. holiness.

  645. It's when

  646. you deny

  647. your sin

  648. and you

  649. live a

  650. lie.

  651. Let me

  652. show you.

  653. Look at

  654. verse 6

  655. of 1 John

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  656. chapter 1.

  657. Verse 6

  658. says this.

  659. If we say

  660. we have

  661. fellowship

  662. with him

  663. while we

  664. walk in

  665. darkness,

  666. we lie

  667. and do

  668. not practice

  669. the truth.

  670. What this

  671. batch has

  672. in common

  673. is that

  674. they're all

  675. different forms

  676. of denying

  677. one's

  678. sinfulness.

  679. And the

  680. first one

  681. we just

  682. read is

  683. a kind

  684. of hypocrisy.

  685. Being

  686. two-faced.

  687. Saying one

  688. thing but

  689. doing another.

  690. You see it

  691. right there

  692. in the text.

  693. If we

  694. say we

  695. have

  696. fellowship

  697. with him,

  698. the God

  699. of light

  700. in whom

  701. there's no

  702. darkness

  703. whatsoever,

  704. if we

  705. say we're

  706. in a

  707. relationship

  708. with him,

  709. a deep,

  710. meaningful,

  711. abiding

  712. relationship

  713. with him

  714. and yet

  715. we walk

  716. in darkness.

  717. We keep

  718. on practicing

  719. and giving

  720. ourselves to

  721. sin like

  722. it doesn't

  723. matter.

  724. We don't

  725. care.

  726. That's

  727. called lip

  728. service

  729. Christianity.

  730. It's

  731. hypocrisy.

  732. And what

  733. John calls it

  734. at the end

  735. of verse 6

  736. is it's

  737. a lie.

  738. You're

  739. not practicing

  740. the truth

  741. of God's

  742. holiness.

  743. You're

  744. living a

  745. lie.

  746. And it's

  747. confusing to

  748. others who

  749. are watching.

  750. Back in the

  751. 90s,

  752. DC Talk

  753. released the

  754. album

  755. Jesus

  756. Freak.

  757. And one

  758. of the

  759. tracks is

  760. called

  761. What If I

  762. Stumble?

  763. And it

  764. begins with

  765. Brendan

  766. Manning

  767. saying this.

  768. The single

  769. greatest cause

  770. of atheism

  771. today is

  772. Christians

  773. who

  774. acknowledge

  775. Jesus with

  776. their lips

  777. but walk

  778. out the

  779. door and

  780. deny him

  781. with their

  782. lifestyle.

  783. This is

  784. what an

  785. unbelieving

  786. world simply

  787. finds

  788. unbelievable.

  789. Our

  790. hypocrisy,

  791. this living

  792. a lie,

  793. is not

  794. only unhealthy

  795. for us,

  796. it's confusing

  797. to everybody

  798. else.

  799. The second

  800. if statement

  801. in this

  802. batch is

  803. in verse

  804. 8.

  805. Self-deception.

  806. If we

  807. say we

  808. have no

  809. sin, we

  810. deceive

  811. ourselves and

  812. the truth

  813. is not

  814. in us.

  815. So remember

  816. where we

  817. started, God

  818. is light, he

  819. is holy, in

  820. him there's

  821. no darkness

  822. at all.

  823. But if

  824. you're saying,

  825. I got no

  826. sin in me,

  827. no stick,

  828. it's not

  829. showing anything

  830. out.

  831. John says

  832. you're deceiving

  833. yourself.

  834. You're

  835. rationalizing

  836. sin away.

  837. And here

  838. is the way

  839. we do it.

  840. You know

  841. what, you're

  842. right, I see

  843. that too, but

  844. you know

  845. what, it's a

  846. result of my

  847. upbringing.

  848. It's how I

  849. was raised.

  850. Or, you

  851. know what,

  852. that is, you're

  853. seeing something

  854. there, that's

  855. true, but

  856. you know

  857. what, it's

  858. because of my

  859. genetic disposition

  860. that I'm

  861. inclined to do

  862. that.

  863. It's my

  864. genes fault.

  865. I'm going to

  866. blame my DNA

  867. on that one.

  868. Or maybe it's

  869. something like

  870. this.

  871. You know

  872. what, I just

  873. have kind of a

  874. brash personality,

  875. so I yell at

  876. people and

  877. demean them.

  878. That's just

  879. my personality.

  880. me.

  881. All of these

  882. ways are

  883. self-deceptive

  884. ways to

  885. not acknowledge

  886. your sin.

  887. There could be

  888. an element of

  889. truth to each

  890. one, by the

  891. way.

  892. But certainly,

  893. the way that

  894. you were

  895. raised is not

  896. responsible for

  897. your sinful

  898. choices before

  899. God.

  900. certainly, your

  901. genetic disposition

  902. isn't responsible

  903. for disobeying

  904. God.

  905. Your personality,

  906. no matter how

  907. shiny and

  908. wonderful it is,

  909. it is not

  910. responsible for

  911. you rejecting

  912. God's glory and

  913. His holiness.

  914. You see, one of

  915. the things about

  916. sin you need to

  917. understand is this.

  918. Sin is by

  919. nature deceptive.

  920. your own sin is

  921. going to try to

  922. deceive you by

  923. blaming anything

  924. but you for

  925. your wrongdoing in

  926. God's sight.

  927. Self-deception.

  928. And that's not

  929. even the doozy.

  930. Look at verse 10.

  931. I mean, this is

  932. like doozy.

  933. If we say we

  934. have not sinned,

  935. God is light in

  936. Him and there's no

  937. darkness at all.

  938. If we say we

  939. have not sinned,

  940. we make Him a

  941. liar.

  942. And His word is

  943. not in us.

  944. You know, why

  945. that doesn't sound

  946. too bad?

  947. Do you understand

  948. what He's saying?

  949. If I'm saying

  950. I'm not responsible

  951. for my sin, like

  952. there's no sin in

  953. me or I haven't

  954. sinned, not only

  955. am I deceiving

  956. myself, I am

  957. calling Jesus a

  958. liar because it's

  959. Jesus who first

  960. spoke this message

  961. that God is light

  962. and in Him there's

  963. no darkness at

  964. all.

  965. It's John heard

  966. that from Jesus and

  967. speaks to us today.

  968. But even more

  969. so, John also

  970. heard Jesus say

  971. this.

  972. Check this out.

  973. This is in Mark

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  974. chapter 7.

  975. What defiles a

  976. person, according

  977. to Jesus, this is

  978. Jesus speaking, what

  979. defiles a person

  980. comes from within.

  981. Out of the heart

  982. of man come evil

  983. thoughts, sexual

  984. immorality, theft,

  985. murder, adultery,

  986. coveting, wickedness,

  987. deceit, sensuality,

  988. envy, slander, pride,

  989. foolishness.

  990. All these evil

  991. things, says Jesus,

  992. come from within

  993. and they defile a

  994. person.

  995. They make you morally

  996. dirty in God's

  997. sight.

  998. According to Jesus,

  999. we have a sin

  1000. problem and if you're

  1001. denying it, you're

  1002. calling Him a liar.

  1003. when you deny your

  1004. own sin, you're

  1005. accusing Jesus of

  1006. promoting falsehoods.

  1007. Jesus is wrong.

  1008. Certainly I'm not.

  1009. And when you do

  1010. that, when you deny

  1011. your sin, you're also

  1012. denying what Jesus

  1013. offers.

  1014. forgiveness,

  1015. forgiveness,

  1016. cleansing,

  1017. life.

  1018. That's why John

1019. says His word is not

  1020. in us.

  1021. If you deny it,

  1022. obviously His word

  1023. isn't functioning in

  1024. your life.

  1025. These three denials

1026. show us how not to

  1027. respond to God's

  1028. holy brilliance.

  1029. don't do that.

  1030. But let's just say

  1031. you have a growing

  1032. awareness of your

  1033. own hypocrisy.

  1034. Let's just say

  1035. you're starting to

  1036. see your own

  1037. self-deception.

  1038. Or maybe perhaps

  1039. you have this lump

  1040. in your throat

  1041. saying, I think I

  1042. have called Jesus

  1043. a liar.

  1044. What do you do?

  1045. Well, you don't

  1046. deny it.

  1047. You acknowledge it.

  1048. You acknowledge it

  1049. to Him.

  1050. Thomas Watson,

  1051. the Puritan,

  1052. said,

  1053. till sin be

  1054. bitter,

  1055. Christ will

  1056. not be

  1057. sweet.

  1058. Let's look at

  1059. the sweetness.

  1060. The second

  1061. batch of

  1062. if statements.

  1063. And what they

  1064. all have in

  1065. common is not

  1066. denying your

  1067. sin and

  1068. living a lie.

  1069. They all

  1070. acknowledge your

  1071. sin and live

  1072. in gospel

  1073. truth.

  1074. When we are in

  1075. a relationship

  1076. with a holy

  1077. God, His

  1078. brilliance will

  1079. expose our

  1080. sinfulness

  1081. again and

  1082. again.

  1083. So we go to

  1084. Jesus again

  1085. and again.

  1086. So let me

  1087. show you this

  1088. batch of

  1089. three.

  1090. honesty.

  1091. The first

  1092. of these

  1093. three

  1094. acknowledgements

  1095. is in

  1096. verse 7.

  1097. It's a

  1098. humble

  1099. honesty.

  1100. But if we

  1101. walk in the

  1102. light as He

  1103. is in the

  1104. light,

  1105. we have

  1106. fellowship with

  1107. one another

  1108. and the

  1109. blood of

  1110. Jesus,

  1111. His Son,

  1112. cleanses us

  1113. from all

  1114. sin.

  1115. This is a

  1116. picture of

  1117. walking with

  1118. God.

  1119. It's in

  1120. contrast to

  1121. being a

  1122. hypocrite.

  1123. Verse 6.

  1124. Don't be a

  1125. hypocrite.

  1126. No.

  1127. Walk in the

  1128. light.

  1129. Acknowledge your

  1130. sin.

  1131. Humbly,

  1132. honestly,

  1133. recognize your

  1134. sinfulness in

  1135. light of God's

  1136. holy brilliance.

  1137. Be honest with

  1138. God.

  1139. Be honest with

  1140. each other.

  1141. Don't deny your

  1142. sinfulness.

  1143. Honestly,

  1144. acknowledge it.

  1145. What we see

  1146. here is that

  1147. is actually

  1148. what fellowship

  1149. with God is

  1150. for 21st

  1151. century disciples.

  1152. ourselves.

  1153. It's not a

  1154. hiding of

  1155. our sin.

  1156. It's an

  1157. acknowledging of

  1158. our sin to

  1159. our great,

  1160. holy,

  1161. loving Father.

  1162. True fellowship

  1163. with God,

  1164. if we are

  1165. walking with

  1166. Him as He is

  1167. in the light,

  1168. extends to

  1169. being in

  1170. rich,

  1171. meaningful,

  1172. deep,

  1173. aimed

  1174. relationships with

  1175. others who

  1176. have been born

  1177. of God too.

  1178. true fellowship

  1179. with God and

  1180. others means

  1181. we're not

  1182. hiding our

  1183. sin from one

  1184. another.

  1185. Remember Genesis

  1186. 3,

  1187. Adam and Eve

  1188. blew it,

  1189. God comes

  1190. walking in the

  1191. garden,

  1192. and they're

  1193. hiding from

  1194. God.

  1195. God finally

  1196. calls them

  1197. out,

  1198. and then they

  1199. blame each

  1200. other.

  1201. That's not

  1202. walking in the

  1203. light.

  1204. Walking in the

  1205. light means

  1206. being humbly

  1207. honest with

  1208. God,

  1209. open to Him,

  1210. yes,

  1211. yes,

  1212. that's sin too,

  1213. and not

  1214. blaming each

  1215. other,

  1216. helping one

  1217. another,

  1218. confessing our

  1219. sins to one

  1220. another,

  1221. helping each

  1222. other follow

  1223. this holy

  1224. God.

  1225. So maybe the

  1226. question becomes,

  1227. when was the

  1228. last time you

  1229. confessed your

  1230. sin,

  1231. not just to

  1232. God,

  1233. but to some

  1234. other believer?

  1235. Which is a

  1236. scary thought.

  1237. To be honest

  1238. about your sin

  1239. with someone

  1240. else,

  1241. it means taking

  1242. a risk,

  1243. but that's

  1244. exactly what

  1245. fellowship is.

  1246. Of risking

  1247. honesty about

  1248. ourselves in

  1249. light of God's

  1250. holiness.

  1251. Till sin be

  1252. bitter,

  1253. Christ will not

  1254. be sweet in

  1255. our fellowship

  1256. together.

  1257. This brings me

  1258. to the first

  1259. gospel reality,

  1260. the gospel

  1261. truth.

  1262. When we are

  1263. living this

  1264. way,

  1265. humbly honest

  1266. with God

  1267. and each

  1268. other,

  1269. we have

  1270. this assurance.

  1271. Look at the

  1272. end of verse

  1273. seven,

  1274. that the

  1275. blood of

  1276. Jesus,

  1277. his son,

  1278. cleanses us

  1279. from all

  1280. sin.

  1281. By living

  1282. that way,

  1283. it demonstrates

  1284. that you've

  1285. been truly

  1286. born of

  1287. God.

  1288. You belong

  1289. to him.

  1290. You're walking

  1291. in the light

  1292. with others

  1293. who are walking

  1294. in the light

  1295. too.

  1296. This

  1297. acknowledgement

  1298. ends,

  1299. results in

  1300. this gospel

  1301. assurance.

  1302. It's covered

  1303. by the

  1304. blood.

  1305. The next

  1306. acknowledgement

  1307. is in

  1308. verse nine.

  1309. It's

  1310. confession.

  1311. And it's

  1312. in contrast

  1313. to the

  1314. self-deception

  1315. of verse

  1316. eight.

  1317. If we

  1318. confess our

  1319. sins,

  1320. he's faithful

  1321. and just

  1322. to forgive

  1323. us our

  1324. sins and

  1325. cleanse us

  1326. from all

  1327. unrighteousness.

  1328. Instead of

  1329. rationalizing our

  1330. sin away,

  1331. we honestly

  1332. admit our

  1333. sins to

  1334. God.

  1335. That word

  1336. confession in

  1337. the original

  1338. language means

  1339. same word.

  1340. And what that

  1341. means is you

  1342. are calling

  1343. something in

  1344. your life what

  1345. God calls it.

  1346. You use the

  1347. same word for

  1348. it.

  1349. So some people

  1350. will say there's

  1351. a guy looking at

  1352. a girl and he'll

  1353. say something like,

  1354. well, you can

  1355. look but you

  1356. can't touch.

  1357. You know what

  1358. God calls that?

  1359. Lust.

  1360. And it's

  1361. sinful.

  1362. So in order to

  1363. confess our

  1364. sins, we need

  1365. to call these

  1366. sinful desires in

  1367. our hearts just

  1368. what God calls

  1369. them.

  1370. That's walking in

  1371. the light.

  1372. And there's a

  1373. great promise in

  1374. this.

  1375. If we confess our

  1376. sins, if we are

  1377. honest with God and

  1378. we're calling what

  1379. we're seeing as he

  1380. sees it, there's

  1381. this great promise.

  1382. He is faithful and

  1383. just to forgive us

  1384. our sins and cleanse

  1385. us from all

  1386. unrighteousness.

  1387. How is he

  1388. faithful?

  1389. He's being faithful

  1390. to his word.

  1391. Well, what do you

  1392. mean?

1393. If we ask him to

  1394. forgive us, he will

  1395. faithfully forgive us.

  1396. Exodus 34, 7.

  1397. He's a forgiver of

  1398. sin and iniquity.

  1399. Jesus taught us to

  1400. pray in Matthew,

  1401. the Lord's prayer,

  1402. to tell our Father

  1403. in heaven, forgive us

  1404. our trespasses.

  1405. And so when we

  1406. confess our sins, he

  1407. is faithful to his

  1408. word to forgive those

  1409. sins.

1410. You can bank on it,

  1411. but the question is,

  1412. on what basis?

1413. How can he forgive my

  1414. sins?

  1415. He's just.

  1416. His justice, that is

  1417. outworking of his

  1418. holiness, comes into

  1419. play.

1420. The reason why he can

  1421. forgive your sins is

  1422. because Jesus died on

  1423. the cross for your

  1424. sins.

1425. It's been paid in full.

  1426. And he is perfectly

  1427. faithful and just,

  1428. based upon the finished

1429. work of Jesus on your

  1430. behalf, to forgive you

  1431. and cleanse you again

  1432. and again and again.

  1433. sin, the grace pouring

  1434. from the cross, never

  1435. ends.

  1436. It's good news.

  1437. But we don't experience

1438. this grace by hiding and

  1439. denying our sin.

  1440. It's by confessing it.

1441. So instead of denying sin

1442. in us, we confess our sins.

  1443. And we don't live a lie.

1444. We actually are living in

  1445. gospel truth.

  1446. Experiencing ongoing

  1447. forgiveness and cleansing

1448. that comes from the cross.

1449. So do you need to confess

1450. your sins to your Holy

  1451. Father?

1452. Do you need to experience

  1453. once again his forgiving

1454. mercy and grace and be

  1455. cleansed?

  1456. Go to him.

  1457. Tell him.

1458. You don't need to fear

  1459. him.

  1460. He's inviting you.

  1461. The third acknowledgement

1462. is at the beginning of

  1463. chapter 2.

  1464. It's 1 through 2.

1465. And if verse 10 is the

1466. doozy of the if statements

  1467. in that bad batch,

1468. this is the doozy of the

  1469. gospel batch.

1470. Look at verse 1 of

  1471. chapter 2.

  1472. My little children, I'm

  1473. writing these things to

1474. you so that you may not

  1475. sin.

  1476. Make no mistake.

1477. Be holy for I am holy,

  1478. says the Lord.

1479. The goal is not to sin.

1480. And he's got grace for us

1481. to say no to temptation

1482. when it shows its face.

1483. But then look where John

  1484. goes.

1485. And this is the sixth if

  1486. statement.

1487. But if anyone does sin,

  1488. anybody interested?

  1489. If anyone does sin,

1490. oh, I want to hear what

  1491. he's about to say.

1492. We have an advocate with

  1493. the Father.

  1494. Jesus Christ, the righteous

1495. one, the one who never

  1496. sinned.

  1497. He is your advocate.

  1498. What's an advocate?

1499. Well, the Greek word is a

  1500. paraclete.

1501. And it's used of the Holy

1502. Spirit in the gospel of

  1503. John.

  1504. And it's only here that it's

  1505. used of Jesus Christ.

1506. And what a paraclete is in

1507. this context here, he's like

  1508. your ace defense attorney.

  1509. Every time you sin,

  1510. your advocate, the risen

  1511. Jesus, the incarnate,

  1512. eternal word of life,

1513. fully God, fully man, is

1514. taking up his advocacy for

  1515. you.

1516. And he's interceding for you.

1517. And he's saying, no, no.

  1518. No, no.

1519. No wrath on that guy.

  1520. I've paid for him.

1521. My blood has bore your wrath

  1522. for that sin.

  1523. That's what he's advocating.

1524. And that's why that word

  1525. propitiation is very important.

1526. If you look at verse 2, he is

1527. the propitiation for our sins

1528. and not for ours only, but also

1529. for the sins of the whole world.

  1530. That word propitiation means

  1531. a forgiveness that comes

  1532. as a result of God's wrath

1533. being satisfied by a payment.

1534. And so, brother and sister

1535. in Christ, one who's in

1536. fellowship with a holy God,

  1537. who's regularly having your

  1538. sinfulness exposed,

  1539. Jesus is regularly making

  1540. his case for you.

  1541. He's advocating for you.

  1542. No, no.

1543. I have paid your wrath.

  1544. I've borne your wrath

  1545. for that sin

  1546. at the cross

  1547. again

  1548. and again

  1549. and again.

  1550. We do not

  1551. deny our sinfulness.

  1552. We acknowledge it.

  1553. And we experience

1554. the covering of his blood.

  1555. We experience

  1556. his forgiveness

  1557. and his cleansing.

  1558. And we experience

  1559. his advocacy

  1560. because he is our

  1561. propitiation

  1562. over and over

  1563. and over again.

  1564. You see,

  1565. by acknowledging your sin,

  1566. you live

  1567. in gospel

  1568. truth.

  1569. It's beautiful.

  1570. It's uncomfortable.

1571. But that's how we live

  1572. for our Lord now.

  1573. We don't deny him.

1574. We don't deny our sin.

  1575. We acknowledge it.

  1576. God's holy brilliance

  1577. will continually

  1578. expose our sinful darkness

  1579. and show us

  1580. our need for Jesus

  1581. over and over

  1582. and over again.

  1583. This is one

  1584. holy message.

  1585. God is light.

  1586. And in him,

  1587. there's no darkness

  1588. of all.

  1589. He's holy.

  1590. And there's only

  1591. two ways to respond.

  1592. Either deny your sin

  1593. and live a lie

  1594. or acknowledge your sin

1595. and live in the gospel

  1596. truth through the blood

  1597. of Jesus.

  1598. Let me close

  1599. just by saying this.

  1600. In chapter 2,

  1601. verse 2,

  1602. we learn that

  1603. Jesus bore God's

  1604. holy wrath

1605. not just for your sin

  1606. and my sin

  1607. but for the sins

  1608. of the whole world.

  1609. And what he means

  1610. by that is

  1611. he's offering

  1612. forgiveness and cleansing

  1613. from all the defilement

  1614. of sin

  1615. to anyone

  1616. who would call upon

  1617. the name of Jesus.

  1618. Anyone.

  1619. It's offers to all.

  1620. Anyone who would

  1621. confess your sins

  1622. to this holy,

  1623. loving God,

  1624. he offers you

  1625. forgiveness

  1626. and cleansing.

  1627. But he offers you

  1628. most of all

  1629. a relationship

  1630. with himself.

  1631. Think about it.

  1632. The holy God

  1633. seeking a relationship

  1634. with you

  1635. and he's made

  1636. a way

1637. to deal with your sin

  1638. through the cross

  1639. of Jesus.

  1640. What would keep you

  1641. from becoming

  1642. part of his family?

  1643. So maybe today

  1644. is the day

  1645. for the first time

  1646. in your life

  1647. you admit

  1648. your sin

  1649. to God

  1650. and acknowledge

  1651. your sin

  1652. before him

  1653. and experience

  1654. life

  1655. in Jesus.

  1656. and now

  1657. not only do you

  1658. get to share

  1659. in his holiness

  1660. but in his happiness.

  1661. Let's pray.

  1662. God in heaven

  1663. would you

  1664. use these words

  1665. to find their mark

  1666. in our hearts

  1667. and to bring about

  1668. the intended effect

  1669. that only you

  1670. would have.

  1671. Father you are holy

  1672. and we are sons

  1673. and daughters

1674. we want to be holy too.

  1675. Help us

  1676. Lord Jesus.

  1677. It's in your name

  1678. we pray.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Amen.

  1687. Amen.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.

  1690. Amen.

  1691. Amen.

  1692. Amen.

  1693. Amen.

  1694. Amen.

  1695. Amen.

  1696. Amen.
