  1. We're going to be looking at 1 John 2, verses 18 through 25 this morning.

    1 John 2:18–25

  2. 1 John 2, verses 18 through 25.

    1 John 2:18–25

  3. And this is what God says to us through the letter of John.

  4. Children, it is the last hour.

  5. And as you have heard that Antichrist is coming, so now many Antichrists have come.

  6. Therefore, we know that it is the last hour.

  7. They went out from us, but they were not of us.

  8. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

  9. But they went out that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

  10. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.

  11. I write to you not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it,

  12. and because no lie is of the truth.

  13. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?

  14. This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.

  15. No one who denies the Son has the Father.

  16. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

  17. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you.

  18. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you,

  19. then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

  20. And this is the promise that he made to us.

  21. Eternal life.

  22. The Antichrist, that title has immediate effect in our culture

  23. to conjure up images of the ultimate evil.

  24. Even people who care nothing about Jesus Christ

  25. can find themselves intrigued and spooked by the idea of the Antichrist.

  26. Pop culture, especially horror movies or TV shows,

  27. love the scary potential of the Antichrist.

  28. He's often portrayed as some kind of human-demon hybrid

  29. or maybe even the child of Satan himself.

  30. Here are a few examples.

  31. The TV show Supernatural features a version of the Antichrist.

  32. In the horror movie series The Omen,

  33. little Damien is the son of Satan,

  34. destined to rise up as the Antichrist when he's older.

  35. Antichrist mythology is used in

  36. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,

  37. in Hellboy comics and movies,

  38. in Stephen King novels.

  39. And if you've been around American Christian subculture long enough,

  40. you probably remember Nikolai Karpathia,

  41. the charming and evil Antichrist of the Left Behind novels.

  42. Now what all of these Antichrists have in common

  43. is that every time they're portrayed,

  44. it's as a singular apocalyptic figure

  45. who is spawned from or somehow empowered by Satan himself

  46. and who threatens ultimate destruction to goodness in the world.

  47. And it's probably no surprise

  48. that these images don't capture the biblical vision

  49. of the Antichrist very well.

  50. When we turn to what God says in the Bible about the Antichrist,

  51. most of us probably think immediately of the book of Revelation.

  52. And thanks to Pastor Mike's sermon series through Revelation,

  53. last year we know that as God carries out His plan

  54. for the fullness of time,

  55. He's going to be unsuccessfully opposed

  56. by the unholy trinity

  57. of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.

  58. And I think it's fair and accurate biblically

  59. to say that's the ultimate expression of the Antichrist.

  60. But you might be surprised to know

  61. that the term Antichrist is found only in John's letter.

  62. And what we learn about Antichrist here

  63. is quite different than what we expect.

  64. Now the main point of our text this morning

  65. could simply be summarized as don't be an Antichrist.

  66. And that would be an accurate portrayal

  67. of what John is saying.

  68. Don't be an Antichrist.

  69. But I think it would also be accurate

  70. and maybe more edifying to say

  71. that John is urging us to stick with Jesus for life.

  72. That's what he ultimately wants

  73. for anyone who reads this letter

  74. is that we stick with Jesus for life.

  75. And in this text,

  76. he shows us three essential elements

  77. to sticking with Jesus.

  78. Three things that have to be realities in our life

  79. if we're going to stick with Jesus for the long haul.

  80. We have to be somewhere.

  81. We have to confess something.

  82. And we have to know why it matters.

  83. So first of all, we have to be somewhere.

  84. We see this in verses 18 through 19.

  85. In verses 18 through 19,

  86. there are two major surprises about the Antichrist.

  87. The first one is in verse 18.

  88. Children, it is the last hour.

  89. And as you've heard that Antichrist is coming,

  90. so now many Antichrists have come.

  91. Therefore, we know that it is the last hour.

  92. The first major surprise about the Antichrist

  93. is that there's many of them.

  94. In fact, we can't even really say

  95. the Antichrist anymore

  96. because there's more than one.

  97. And they're not just coming at some point in the future

  98. to bring about the end of the world.

  99. By the time John wrote this letter,

  100. they'd already started rolling out.

  101. So right away, if we're going to think rightly

  102. according to God's Word

  103. about the reality of Antichrist,

  104. we need to recalibrate

  105. from thinking about one person

  106. to thinking about a stream of people

  107. or a category of people throughout time.

  108. You notice that John also says

  109. that we are in the last hour

  110. and that these Antichrists are an indication

  111. that we are in the last hour.

  112. What does he mean by the last hour?

  113. He means that we are in the final stage

  114. of God's redemptive mission.

  115. Jesus, the Son of God, has come

  116. and no greater revelation will be given.

  117. There's not some newer covenant coming

  118. than the one that Jesus brought.

  119. There's not some greater salvation coming

  120. than the one that Jesus has accomplished.

  121. All that remains at the end of this last hour

  122. is for God to finalize

  123. what Jesus has already begun.

  124. So the last hour is this time in history

  125. begun in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus

  126. and completed at the end of his work

  127. when he finishes all that he's begun.

  128. And everyone who lives in the last hour,

  129. the most fundamental thing about them

  130. is their relationship to Jesus.

  131. Jesus is the defining reality of the last hour.

  132. And we're going to see more about this idea shortly

  133. because it's central to what John

  134. is trying to say here to this church.

  135. So the first major surprise,

  136. there are many Antichrists.

  137. The second major surprise is in verse 19.

  138. He says,

  139. The second major surprise about these Antichrists

  140. is where they come from.

  141. They don't come from some bizarre union

  142. of a human and a demon.

  143. They aren't unleashed from some pit in hell.

  144. They aren't sitting in some Satanist cult meeting right now.

  145. They come from the church.

  146. Who wants to own that?

  147. A church members meeting,

  148. someone's giving an update.

  149. They say,

  150. You know, it's been a tough year.

  151. We've been working our way through the pandemic.

  152. And unfortunately,

  153. three Antichrists went out from us

  154. into the world this last year.

  155. Sounds kind of absurd, right?

  156. But that's what John is saying.

  157. John is saying that there were participants

  158. in the life of the church,

  159. people who we would assume professed to be Christians,

  160. who at some point left the church

  161. and left the faith.

  162. And it's their departure from the church

  163. that identifies them as Antichrist

  164. and proves that they never truly belonged to the faith.

  165. When these people left the church,

  166. it indicated that there was something wrong all along.

  167. And now by going out from the church,

  168. they are identified as Antichrist.

  169. And we're going to see in the next section

  170. what it is that made them Antichrists.

  171. What is it that constitutes an Antichrist?

  172. But it's their going out that identifies them.

  173. So the first essential element

  174. to sticking with Jesus for life

  175. is that you've got to be somewhere.

  176. And that somewhere is the church.

  177. No one should expect that they or anyone else

  178. can stick with Jesus for life outside of the church.

  179. And particularly, I mean regularly gathering

  180. with a local church.

  181. When you read the New Testament,

  182. it is clear that the church is ordained by God

  183. as the gathering of His redeemed people

  184. where His gospel is proclaimed

  185. and where we learn to follow Jesus faithfully.

  186. The church is the community

  187. where the identity of God's people is revealed

  188. and sustained.

  189. And so to abandon the church,

  190. to leave the church,

  191. is to call into question your status

  192. as a follower of Jesus.

  193. According to John here,

  194. your location is indicative of your identity.

  195. To leave the church is to indicate

  196. that you never belong to Jesus.

  197. So we need a few clarifying questions

  198. because it's really easy to get this turned around,

  199. what John is saying and what he's not saying.

  200. So here's the first question.

  201. Does going to church then make you a Christian?

  202. No.

  203. It's possible, of course,

  204. to be part of a church and not a true Christian.

  205. In fact, that's what was going on

  206. with these people here that Jesus,

  207. or sorry, that John was talking about.

  208. They were part of a church.

  209. It wasn't being part of a church

  210. that made them a Christian.

  211. They were part of this church for a time,

  212. but eventually they went out.

  213. They left the church.

  214. They left the gospel that it proclaimed.

  215. And so the issue is,

  216. over the long term,

  217. one major indicator,

  218. not the only indicator,

  219. but one major indicator

  220. of whether you are sticking with Jesus

  221. is whether you are located in a church or not.

  222. Here's another question.

  223. Am I saying that you have to stay

  224. at Christ the King Church forever,

  225. or else you're not really sticking with Jesus?

  226. Am I saying that if you leave

  227. Christ the King Church,

  228. are you an antichrist?

  229. No, not necessarily.

  230. We have some wonderful examples

  231. of people who have left recently.

  232. Matt and Elise Sear and their family left,

  233. not because they were leaving the church,

  234. not because they were abandoning

  235. the gathering of God's people,

  236. not because they were rejecting Jesus,

  237. because they felt called by God

  238. to join another local church for a time

  239. in anticipation of eventually

  240. planning a church themselves.

  241. So they did not go out from the church

  242. like John is talking about.

  243. They went out from our church

  244. for the purpose of following God's leading elsewhere.

  245. There were some people from our church

  246. who lived in Racine.

  247. They left our church,

  248. not because they were abandoning

  249. the gathering of God's people,

  250. but because they said,

  251. hey, we live in Racine.

  252. We need to find a church

  253. that's closer to home

  254. so that we can be more engaged.

  255. So I'm not saying

  256. that you have to stay

  257. at Christ the King church forever

  258. in order to be

  259. a faithful follower of Jesus.

  260. But I am saying

  261. that you do have to be part

  262. of a church.

  263. You do have to be part

  264. of a church that preaches Jesus

  265. if you want to stick with Jesus

  266. for life.

  267. And right now,

  268. and over this past year,

  269. we faced a lot of pressures

  270. to abandon the church.

  271. We've been dealing with COVID-19.

  272. Initially, it meant

  273. that we had to move

  274. to Zoom meetings.

  275. And then we were meeting

  276. outside for a while,

  277. and now we're meeting

  278. back in the building,

  279. but we have increased distance.

  280. We have mask wearing.

  281. And any one of these things

  282. could lead someone to say,

  283. you know what?

  284. Maybe it's not worth it.

  285. You know,

  286. I've been watching church

  287. on Zoom for a while

  288. or on live stream,

  289. and I don't really think

  290. there's much difference

  291. between being there

  292. and watching.

  293. Now, I think about it.

  294. What's the difference

  295. between watching the church

  296. on live stream

  297. and just watching

  298. any random sermon

  299. once in a while?

  300. And what's the difference

  301. between just watching

  302. a sermon on my computer

  303. and just not getting

  304. out of bed at all?

  305. What difference does it make?

  306. So some of the ways

  307. that we've been separated

  308. may lead some people

  309. to think it's not worth it anymore.

  310. Some people may be frustrated,

  311. frustrated by distance,

  312. frustrated by having to watch on Zoom

  313. if they have to stay

  314. at home right now,

  315. frustrated by having to wear masks,

  316. and they say,

  317. you know what?

  318. I'm tired of all this COVID stuff.

  319. I don't like the decisions

  320. the elders are making

  321. about how we're going

  322. to deal with this.

  323. I'm just going to give up.

  324. We've had political pressures,

  325. a significant election year.

  326. You've probably seen some things

  327. in your fellow church members

  328. that you don't like

  329. online or in person.

  330. You don't like what they've said

  331. about the election.

  332. You don't like who you think

  333. they voted for.

  334. And you know

  335. that you're closer to Jesus

  336. than they are

  337. because of who they voted for

  338. and who you voted for.

  339. And in fact,

  340. you're so close to Jesus

  341. that you just need to give up

  342. on this group of people.

  343. They're so much farther away

  344. from Jesus than you are.

  345. The best bet

  346. for your relationship with Jesus

  347. is to get out of here.

  348. there's a lot of pressures

  349. and temptations

  350. to abandon the gathering

  351. of God's people

  352. to leave the local church

  353. right now.

  354. But we need to remember

  355. that our preferred political party

  356. or faction

  357. has not been ordained by God

  358. as the vehicle

  359. of His redeeming the work

  360. in the world.

  361. Only the church has.

  362. And no precautions

  363. we may take,

  364. even if you agree with them

  365. or not,

  366. no precautions we may take

  367. are going to stop

  368. God's work in the world

  369. and in His church

  370. in particular.

  371. So continue gathering

  372. with a local church.

  373. If it's not this one,

  374. that's okay.

  375. But find a local church

  376. that preaches the gospel

  377. of Jesus

  378. and continue gathering

  379. with them.

  380. If we're going to stick

  381. with Jesus for life,

  382. we have to be somewhere.

  383. That somewhere is in the church.

  384. Secondly,

  385. if we're going to stick

  386. with Jesus for life,

  387. we have to confess something.

  388. We may ask,

  389. in light of these things,

  390. in light of the fact

  391. that antichrists

  392. aren't coming from

  393. this evil world,

  394. they're coming

  395. from within our gatherings,

  396. how can we have

  397. any confidence?

  398. if even some

  399. who seem to be part

  400. of the church

  401. are antichrists,

  402. how can we have

  403. the ability

  404. to sort these things

  405. out rightly?

  406. How can we know

  407. if we're a faithful follower

  408. of Jesus

  409. or if we're an antichrist?

  410. Well,

  411. John helps us out

  412. in verses 20

  413. and 21.

  414. How can we figure

  415. these things out?

  416. He says,

  417. but you have been

  418. anointed by the Holy One

  419. and you all have knowledge.

  420. I'll write to you

  421. not because you do not

  422. know the truth

  423. but because you know it

  424. and because no lie

  425. is of the truth.

  426. The way we can sort

  427. these things out

  428. is through the testimony

  429. of the Holy Spirit.

  430. The anointing

  431. of the Holy Spirit

  432. given to us by God

  433. gives us knowledge,

  434. which is exactly

  435. what Jesus promised

  436. that the Holy Spirit

  437. would do for us

  438. when He was telling

  439. His disciples

  440. about the coming

  441. of the Holy Spirit.

  442. The anointing

  443. of the Holy Spirit

  444. on our lives

  445. given to us by Jesus

  446. as a guarantee

  447. of our salvation

  448. gives us the knowledge

  449. necessary to distinguish

  450. between faithful follower

  451. and antichrist

  452. both in our own hearts

  453. and in those around us.

  454. But here's the thing

  455. John says,

  456. sometimes that Holy Spirit

  457. deposit of knowledge

  458. needs reactivation

  459. by teaching

  460. and by reminder.

  461. And John says,

  462. that's why I'm writing

  463. to you.

  464. I want these things

  465. that I'm writing

  466. to you to align

  467. with the testimony

  468. of the Holy Spirit

  469. in your hearts

  470. and reactivate

  471. what He's already

  472. given to you.

  473. It's kind of like

  474. an SOS pad.

  475. You've got a piece

  476. of steel wool

  477. infused with soap.

  478. It's really good

  479. for cleaning things.

  480. Let's not activate it

  481. until you get it wet.

  482. You've got to suds it up.

  483. And so John is writing

  484. to suds up

  485. the Holy Spirit anointing

  486. so that these believers

  487. can effectively

  488. apply that truth

  489. in their own situation.

  490. And what happens is

  491. as we hear the truth,

  492. the Holy Spirit

  493. given to us by God

  494. testifies to it

  495. and says,

  496. this is true.

  497. We see it for what it is

  498. because of the Holy Spirit.

  499. And John knows

  500. that because of the testimony

  501. of the Holy Spirit,

  502. he can write to these believers

  503. about the realities

  504. of Antichrist

  505. and they will acknowledge

  506. it as true

  507. and they'll be able

  508. to apply it.

  509. So with the Holy Spirit

  510. anointing

  511. and with the truth

  512. of God's Word,

  513. we can competently

  514. and rightly judge

  515. between faithful follower

  516. and Antichrist.

  517. Again,

  518. beginning with ourselves.

  519. So the Holy Spirit

  520. helps us distinguish

  521. the truth

  522. to recognize it.

  523. But what is that truth?

  524. What is the content

  525. of the truth?

  526. What does the truth entail

  527. that John is talking about?

  528. If we have to confess

  529. something in order

  530. to stick with Jesus

  531. for life,

  532. how do we know

  533. what to confess?

  534. Look at verses 22-23.

  535. Who is a liar

  536. but he who denies

  537. that Jesus is the Christ?

  538. This is the Antichrist,

  539. he who denies

  540. the Father and the Son.

  541. No one who denies

  542. the Son has the Father.

  543. Whoever confesses

  544. the Son has the Father also.

  545. If I were to ask you,

  546. what is the opposite

  547. of the Antichrist?

  548. If you were like me,

  549. you would be inclined

  550. to say,

  551. well,

  552. the opposite of an Antichrist

  553. is obviously Christ

  554. because he's Antichrist.

  555. But according to John,

  556. the opposite

  557. of an Antichrist

  558. is not Jesus.

  559. it's a confessor

  560. of Christ.

  561. A confessor of Christ

  562. is the opposite

  563. of an Antichrist.

  564. And what does it mean

  565. to confess Jesus?

  566. Well, first,

  567. we probably have to understand

  568. what it means

  569. to deny Jesus.

  570. Because he says,

  571. who is a liar

  572. but he who denies

  573. that Jesus is the Christ?

  574. What does it mean

  575. to deny Jesus?

  576. It doesn't mean

  577. to deny that Jesus existed.

  578. That wasn't really

  579. an issue

  580. when John

  581. was writing this letter.

  582. Jesus was with

  583. many of these people

  584. not that long ago.

  585. Some of them

  586. had seen him.

  587. Some of them

  588. had heard from others

  589. who'd seen them.

  590. It was not a question

  591. of does Jesus exist?

  592. So denying Jesus

  593. does not mean

  594. denying that he existed.

  595. It doesn't even mean

  596. denying that he had

  597. some divine power.

  598. People that John

  599. was writing to

  600. would have been

  601. willing to accept,

  602. you know,

  603. people can come

  604. with divine power,

  605. empowered by God

  606. or the gods.

  607. to deny Jesus

  608. is to deny

  609. that he is the Christ.

  610. Christ means

  611. Messiah

  612. or anointed one.

  613. To deny

  614. that Jesus is the Christ

  615. means to deny

  616. that he is the one

  617. sent by God the Father

  618. to accomplish

  619. his plan

  620. for the redemption

  621. of creation.

  622. To deny

  623. that Jesus is the one

  624. who died for the sins

  625. of the world,

  626. rose in eternal life,

  627. ascended to the throne

  628. of God,

  629. and will one day

  630. return to fully

  631. establish his kingdom.

  632. In other words,

  633. to deny

  634. Jesus as the Christ

  635. is to deny

  636. that he is exactly

  637. who God has revealed

  638. him to be.

  639. A generic Jesus

  640. is not an option.

  641. That's why

  642. John is so anxious

  643. at the very beginning

  644. of his letter,

  645. chapter 1,

  646. verse 1,

  647. he says,

  648. that which was

  649. from the beginning

  650. which we have heard,

  651. which we have seen

  652. with our eyes,

  653. which we have looked upon

  654. and have touched

  655. with our hands.

  656. The life was made manifest

  657. and we have seen it

  658. and testified to it.

  659. It was made manifest

  660. to us,

  661. that which we have seen

  662. and heard

  663. we proclaim to you.

  664. John is saying

  665. something specific

  666. has happened.

  667. Someone specific

  668. has come.

  669. And we want to tell you

  670. about that.

  671. We want you to believe

  672. that a generic Jesus

  673. isn't an option.

  674. Any version of Jesus

  675. that doesn't include

  676. all that he claimed

  677. about himself

  678. isn't an option.

  679. anyone who confesses

  680. a generic Jesus

  681. is actually

  682. an antichrist.

  683. Because John says

  684. you have to confess

  685. that Jesus is the Christ,

  686. that he is the anointed one

  687. from the Father.

  688. There has to be

  689. specificity

  690. to our confession

  691. about Jesus.

  692. In order for our confession

  693. about Jesus

  694. to be true,

  695. it has to align

  696. with the reality

  697. of who he really is.

  698. And the more we see

  699. clearly what this means,

  700. to confess Jesus

  701. means to align

  702. with who he really is,

  703. we begin to realize

  704. that we can deny Jesus

  705. with our lives

  706. as well as with our words.

  707. In fact,

  708. Paul says in Titus

  709. that it's possible

  710. to profess God

  711. with our mouths

  712. but deny him

  713. by our works.

  714. So here's a working

  715. definition of denying Jesus.

  716. to live

  717. or to speak

  718. against the reality

  719. of who Jesus is.

  720. To live

  721. or to speak

  722. contrary

  723. to who the Father

  724. has revealed Jesus

  725. to be.

  726. To contradict

  727. what God has revealed

  728. about the Son.

  729. An antichrist

  730. is someone

  731. who refuses

  732. to confess

  733. Jesus

  734. for who he really is.

  735. Things like

  736. Jesus is not

  737. God's anointed.

  738. He is not

  739. God's only plan

  740. for solving

  741. the problem of sin

  742. and making the world

  743. right again.

  744. Things like

  745. Jesus is optional.

  746. I can have

  747. a meaningful

  748. spiritual life

  749. or connection

  750. to God

  751. apart from Jesus.

  752. Or things like

  753. I can claim

  754. the name of Jesus

  755. or the name

  756. of the Father

  757. but live in a way

  758. that lies to the world

  759. about who he is.

  760. To deny

  761. Jesus as the Christ

  762. means to live

  763. or to speak

  764. contrary

  765. to who God

  766. has revealed him

  767. to be.

  768. And so if that's

  769. the definition

  770. of denying

  771. the definition

  772. of confessing

  773. Jesus

  774. is the opposite.

  775. To confess

  776. Jesus

  777. is to live

  778. and speak

  779. in agreement

  780. with reality

  781. as revealed

  782. by God.

  783. To confess

  784. Jesus means

  785. that when people

  786. hear your words

  787. and see your life

  788. they see more

  789. clearly who Jesus

  790. really is.

  791. They see that

  792. he really is

  793. God's single solution

  794. to sin

  795. and evil

  796. and suffering.

  797. They see that

  798. he's not optional

  799. at all

  800. when they see

  801. your life

  802. and they hear

  803. your words.

  804. They see in your life

  805. what it means

  806. to put your hope

  807. in Jesus

  808. and they see

  809. a reflection

  810. of who the Father

  811. and the Son are.

  812. To confess

  813. Jesus means

  814. to live

  815. and to speak

  816. in alignment

  817. with who he

  818. has revealed

  819. himself to be.

  820. Now a true

  821. antichrist

  822. denies that

  823. Jesus is the Christ.

  824. Jesus is not

  825. the anointed

  826. of God.

  827. He is not

  828. the one

  829. who accomplishes

  830. God's plan.

  831. But even

  832. confessors

  833. of Jesus

  834. can be

  835. influenced

  836. by what

  837. John later

  838. calls in

  839. 1 John

  840. the spirit

  841. of the

  842. antichrist.

  843. An influence

  844. that pushes

  845. even confessors

  846. of Jesus

  847. to start

  848. drifting

  849. into living

  850. and speaking

  851. in ways

  852. that lie

  853. about who

  854. Jesus is.

  855. And there

  856. are some

  857. antichrist

  858. tendencies

  859. that can

  860. operate

  861. in all

  862. of our

  863. lives.

  864. So I want

  865. to give

  866. some practical

  867. examples

  868. of these

  869. antichrist

  870. tendencies.

  871. Again,

  872. I'm not saying

  873. that if one

  874. of these

  875. is true

  876. about your

  877. life,

  878. that means

  879. that you're

  880. an antichrist.

  881. In fact,

  882. I'm confident

  883. that at

  884. least one

  885. of these

  886. will have

  887. been true

  888. of all

  889. of you

  890. at some

  891. point

  892. in your

  893. life as

  894. a believer.

  895. But if we

  896. want to

  897. confess Jesus

  898. for all

  899. that he

  900. really is,

  901. we need

  902. to see

  903. the

  904. antichrist

  905. tendencies

  906. that can

  907. threaten

  908. even

  909. confessors

  910. of Jesus.

  911. Here's a

  912. big one.

  913. Watch out

  914. for denying

  915. Jesus by

  916. acting as if

  917. what's most

  918. important

  919. for those

  920. around you

  921. is that

  922. they believe

  923. in God

  924. generically

  925. rather than

  926. repenting and

  927. putting their

  928. faith in

  929. Jesus alone

  930. for salvation.

  931. American

  932. Christians can

  933. have a

  934. tendency to

  935. communicate to

  936. the world

  937. that what's

  938. most important

  939. is that you

  940. just believe

  941. in God,

  942. that you're

  943. not an

  944. atheist or

  945. something like

  946. that.

  947. Do you have

  948. Judeo-Christian

  949. values?

  950. Do you have

  951. family values?

  952. Do you give

  953. some credit to

  954. the guy upstairs

  955. but for us

  956. to communicate

  957. to the people

  958. around us

  959. that belief

  960. in God

  961. generically

  962. is all

  963. that's required

  964. is to deny

  965. who Jesus

  966. really is.

  967. To act

  968. like what's

  969. most important

  970. is putting

  971. God back

  972. in the schools

  973. or putting

  974. the Ten

  975. Commandments

  976. back in the

  977. courthouses

  978. or just for

  979. people to

  980. acknowledge God

  981. in their

  982. public speeches

  983. is not

  984. enough.

  985. Believing the

  986. Ten Commandments

  987. never saved

  988. anybody,

  989. believing that

  990. God exists

  991. never saved

  992. anybody,

  993. faith in

  994. Jesus as

  995. the Messiah

  996. is what

  997. saves people.

  998. Here's another

  999. one, watch

  1000. out for denying

  1001. Jesus by

  1002. speaking and

  1003. living as if

  1004. some political

  1005. figure or

  1006. outcome is

  1007. your greatest

  1008. hope.

  1009. to say

  1010. that any

  1011. politician or

  1012. election is

  1013. the last

  1014. hope of

  1015. America or

  1016. the church

  1017. is an

  1018. Antichrist

  1019. statement.

  1020. Because we

  1021. should instead

  1022. be confessing

  1023. that all

  1024. authority belongs

  1025. to Jesus,

  1026. that the

  1027. hearts of

  1028. all rulers

  1029. are like

  1030. water in

  1031. his hands,

  1032. and that

  1033. we as

  1034. believers have

  1035. hope for a

  1036. greater kingdom

  1037. than the

  1038. USA.

  1039. Watch out for

  1040. denying Jesus

  1041. by finding more

  1042. brotherhood in a

  1043. political faction

  1044. than in the

  1045. church, as if

  1046. the last hour is

  1047. defined by

  1048. American politics

  1049. rather than by

  1050. the Son of

  1051. God.

  1052. Watch out for

  1053. denying Jesus by

  1054. claiming to

  1055. believe that he's

  1056. the king of

  1057. the universe,

  1058. and yet giving

  1059. him the least

  1060. of your time

  1061. and money.

  1062. Watch out for

  1063. denying Jesus by

  1064. living as if

  1065. sexual pleasure is

  1066. the greatest thing

  1067. that life has to

  1068. offer.

  1069. Watch out for

  1070. denying Jesus by

  1071. acting as if

  1072. wrongs done to

  1073. you are more

  1074. unforgivable than

  1075. those for which

  1076. he has forgiven

  1077. you.

  1078. So as we think

  1079. about the reality

  1080. of Antichrist and

  1081. what it means to

  1082. deny who Jesus is

1083. and what it means to

  1084. confess who Jesus

  1085. is, let's be

  1086. careful of speaking

  1087. and living in

  1088. ways that are

  1089. kind of hard to

  1090. see but are

  1091. contrary to the

  1092. reality of who

  1093. Jesus is.

  1094. And if you felt

  1095. that, hey, you

  1096. know what, some of

  1097. that stuff was

  1098. true in my life,

  1099. I know I did,

  1100. let's ask God's

  1101. forgiveness for

  1102. lying to the

  1103. world about who

  1104. Jesus is and

  1105. let's embrace the

  1106. incredible privilege

  1107. of confessing

  1108. Jesus for who he

  1109. is by speaking

  1110. and living in a

  1111. way that clearly

  1112. shows that he is

  1113. the only savior of

  1114. the world, anointed

  1115. by God who brings

  1116. us to the Father.

  1117. And let's confess

  1118. what the Father is

  1119. really like based on

  1120. his revelation to

  1121. us.

  1122. So John says,

  1123. hey, children,

  1124. don't be an

  1125. antichrist, be a

  1126. confessor of

  1127. Christ.

  1128. If we're going to

  1129. stick with Jesus

  1130. for life, we have

  1131. to be somewhere,

  1132. we have to remain

  1133. in the fellowship

  1134. of the local

  1135. church, we have

  1136. to confess

  1137. something, we

  1138. have to confess

  1139. the Son and

  1140. the Father as

  1141. they reveal

  1142. themselves.

  1143. And number

  1144. three, we have

  1145. to know why it

  1146. matters.

  1147. Why does it

  1148. matter that we

  1149. stick with Jesus

  1150. for life?

  1151. Verses 24

  1152. through 25.

  1153. Let what you

  1154. heard from the

  1155. beginning abide in

  1156. you.

  1157. If what you heard

  1158. from the beginning

  1159. abides in you, then

1160. you too will abide in

1161. the Son and in the

  1162. Father.

  1163. And this is the

  1164. promise that he made

  1165. to us, eternal

  1166. life.

  1167. When John talks

  1168. about what they

  1169. have heard from

  1170. the beginning, he's

  1171. talking about the

  1172. truth of verses

  1173. 21 and 22.

  1174. The confession

  1175. confirmed by the

  1176. Holy Spirit that

  1177. Jesus is the

  1178. Christ, the

  1179. anointed one.

  1180. The confession of

  1181. what God has done

  1182. through his Son.

  1183. And John is

  1184. saying, let that

  1185. abide in you, let

  1186. it remain in you,

  1187. hang on to that

  1188. truth, don't let

  1189. it go, don't let

  1190. something else take

  1191. its place.

  1192. Sticking with

  1193. Jesus requires that

  1194. we remain in the

  1195. church, but it

  1196. also requires that

  1197. the truth of Jesus

  1198. remain in us.

1199. And if the truth of

  1200. Jesus remains in

  1201. us, what is the

  1202. result?

  1203. We remain in the

  1204. Son and the

  1205. Father and we

  1206. experience eternal

  1207. life.

  1208. He says, you too

  1209. will abide in the

  1210. Son and in the

  1211. Father.

  1212. And this is the

  1213. promise that he

  1214. made to us, eternal

  1215. life.

  1216. And as you read

  1217. through 1 John,

  1218. you realize that

  1219. for John, everything

  1220. is connected.

  1221. He gives us these

  1222. three big tests to

  1223. identify if you are

  1224. in the faith.

  1225. Do you believe

  1226. rightly?

  1227. Do you obey?

  1228. Do you love?

  1229. But these aren't

  1230. three separate train

  1231. tracks.

  1232. They're always

  1233. crisscrossing over

  1234. one another and

  1235. intertwining and

  1236. bleeding over into

  1237. one another.

  1238. For John, everything

  1239. is connected and

  1240. when he says, you

  1241. will abide in the

  1242. Son and the

  1243. Father, and then he

  1244. says, this is a

  1245. promise that he

  1246. made to us,

  1247. eternal life.

  1248. John's talking

  1249. about the same

  1250. thing.

  1251. Pastor Mike

  1252. talked about this

1253. at the end of his

  1254. sermon last week.

  1255. We remain in the

  1256. Son and the

  1257. Father and we

  1258. experience the

  1259. eternal life that

  1260. God has promised

  1261. to us and it's

  1262. the same thing

  1263. because life is

  1264. found in the

  1265. Son and in the

  1266. Father.

  1267. Salvation and

  1268. eternal life are

  1269. often described as

  1270. a gift.

  1271. gift.

  1272. And that's true.

  1273. That's biblical.

  1274. Paul says it.

  1275. It's a free gift.

  1276. But if we're not

  1277. careful, if we think

  1278. of life, eternal life

1279. from Jesus only as a

1280. gift, it can blind us

  1281. to some of what's

  1282. really going on.

  1283. Eternal life is not

  1284. something that Jesus

1285. hands to us like a

  1286. present on Christmas

  1287. morning.

  1288. It isn't something that

1289. passes from him to us

1290. and then we take it

  1291. and go.

  1292. Eternal life is Jesus

  1293. giving us himself,

  1294. giving us the life

  1295. that he has.

  1296. And apart from him,

  1297. we don't have that

  1298. life at all.

  1299. Eternal life is less

1300. like a box to be

  1301. opened and more like

1302. a power source to be

  1303. plugged into.

  1304. The eternal life

  1305. that's promised by

1306. God is found only in

  1307. union with him.

  1308. And this life that

  1309. John is talking about

1310. is the life that we

  1311. were meant for.

  1312. It's not just life

1313. exactly as it is now,

  1314. extended forever.

  1315. It's a life that

  1316. begins now in a

  1317. relationship with the

  1318. Father and the Son.

  1319. And it does continue

  1320. forever, but it also

  1321. changes and grows and

  1322. is transformed.

  1323. And there's a promise

  1324. of greater life coming

1325. than what we have yet

  1326. seen.

  1327. And so, when we

  1328. think about this

  1329. eternal life, there

1330. are a few things we

  1331. need to know.

  1332. If you are lonely

  1333. right now, which I

1334. think a lot of people

  1335. are with COVID, if

  1336. you are lonely right

  1337. now, you should know

  1338. that this life is

  1339. relational.

  1340. Jesus said, this is

  1341. eternal life, that

  1342. they know you, the

  1343. only true God, and

  1344. Jesus Christ whom you

  1345. have sent.

1346. If you are sick or

  1347. weak, then you

  1348. or even approaching

  1349. death, you should

  1350. know that this

  1351. imperishable, glorious

  1352. life that God has

1353. promised for us is the

  1354. resurrection life of

  1355. Jesus.

1356. Jesus who said, I am

  1357. the resurrection and

  1358. the life.

  1359. And the life that

1360. Jesus has now in his

  1361. resurrection that will

  1362. continue forever is the

  1363. life that he promises

  1364. to share with you.

1365. If life right now feels

  1366. boring or meaningless to

1367. you, and the idea of

  1368. eternal life just sounds

  1369. terrible, you should

  1370. know that Jesus right

  1371. now is building a

  1372. kingdom.

  1373. And his promise of

  1374. eternal life to you

1375. means that your life and

1376. your actions now are not

  1377. meaningless, but they can

  1378. have eternal significance

  1379. in connection with Jesus.

  1380. If your life feels

  1381. hopelessly polluted by the

1382. evil of others or the evil

1383. you have done, you should

1384. know that this eternal life

  1385. that God promises, it

  1386. empowers healing and change

  1387. now in relationship with

  1388. the Father and it

  1389. promises an eternal home

  1390. where nothing twisted or

1391. sinful will be allowed to

1392. enter, a place of perfect

  1393. peace and justice.

  1394. And that's what's on the

1395. line in sticking with Jesus

  1396. for life.

1397. And John is saying, don't

  1398. miss out on that.

1399. It's been promised to you,

  1400. this eternal life.

  1401. So stick with Jesus.

  1402. Don't be a Jesus denier who

  1403. walks away from Jesus'

  1404. church.

1405. Be a Jesus confessor who

  1406. locks arms with other

1407. confessors and holds on for

1408. the eternal life that begins

1409. now and grows into the full

1410. glory of all that God has

  1411. promised.

1412. So Christ the King Church,

1413. let's stick with Jesus for

  1414. life.

1415. We're going to need three

1416. things if we're going to make

  1417. it.

1418. We need to be somewhere

  1419. prayer within the regular

  1420. gathering of Jesus'

  1421. followers called the church.

1422. We need to confess something

1423. by our lives and our words

1424. showing that Jesus really is

1425. who he said he is.

1426. And we need to know why it

  1427. matters because eternal life

  1428. is on the line.

  1429. So let's pray together.

1430. Father, may none of us here

1431. who have heard your word this

  1432. morning be antichrists.

1433. But instead, may all of us

1434. today who have heard your word

  1435. remain confessors of Jesus

  1436. for life.

  1437. Amen.
