  1. I'd like you to turn your Bibles to Matthew chapter 2.

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  2. Actually, we're going to skip around a little bit today, but we're going to start there in chapter 2.

  3. And I'm going to read a few verses from that passage.

  4. It's interesting in the Gospels that very little is said about Jesus' birth.

  5. Of course, Mark and John do not even mention Jesus' birth.

  6. Most of the time when Jesus referred to his early life, he talked about coming down from heaven.

  7. He spoke very little of, like one time I think mentioned something with reference to Bethlehem birth.

  8. Luke gives us the most information.

  9. Matthew mostly just tells us at the end of chapter 1 that Jesus was born.

  10. And then chapter 2, now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,

  11. behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem saying,

  12. Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?

  13. For we saw his star when it rose, and we have come to worship him.

  14. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

  15. And assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people,

  16. he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

  17. They told him,

  18. In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet,

  19. And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah.

  20. For from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.

  21. Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly, and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.

  22. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,

  23. Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word that I too may come and worship him.

  24. After listening to the king, they went on their way.

  25. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose,

  26. went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.

  27. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.

  28. And going into the house,

  29. they saw the child with Mary his mother,

  30. and they fell down and worshipped him.

  31. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

  32. When an heir to the throne is born, it causes quite a stir.

  33. For some, there is great joy in celebration.

  34. For others, there is despair and maybe even some panic.

  35. Matthew records this meeting between King Herod and some magi from the east

  36. who came searching for the one whom they had discerned had been born in Bethlehem.

  37. The magi assumed that the present king of the region would certainly know something this monumental.

  38. So they scheduled a meeting with King Herod.

  39. Herod was king, was the ruler over this portion of the Roman world.

  40. He was known as King of the Jews.

  41. He had been in this position at this point for about 30 years.

  42. The magi were anxious to find this baby king so they could worship him.

  43. Possibly, the possibility of a new king in town was, to say the least,

  44. rather unsettling to this reigning king.

  45. We'll see that pattern repeat.

  46. Warren Wiersbe wrote a little booklet called His Name is Wonderful.

  47. He made the case that the names that Jesus wears are the blessings that he shares.

  48. He was referring to the words that we just sang,

  49. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

  50. Well, we know his name from the outset when the pregnancy was announced, even before that,

  51. His name was to be called Jesus, which means Savior.

  52. And he certainly shares his name with us, and then he gives us his salvation to all who believe he is Savior.

  53. He is Jesus.

  54. He's also called King.

  55. And as King, he exercises his sovereign rule over everyone.

  56. For all who believe, that's a great blessing.

  57. For those who don't, not so much.

  58. Sovereign rulers call all the shots.

  59. They have all the power.

  60. Those who fall before them are responding appropriately.

  61. Those who fail to submit to that sovereign authority will be in a battle that they cannot win.

  62. Everywhere the king appears, there are the same reactions.

  63. Joy and fear.

  64. Admiration and hatred.

  65. Attempts to exalt.

  66. Efforts to destroy.

  67. So we're going to follow some of those responses as we consider Jesus as the king as described in the New Testament.

  68. So we're going to start with when the king came to Bethlehem from the passage that we just read.

  69. And we're going to discover some interesting witnesses who express the understanding, at least in some form,

  70. and the awareness that Jesus came as king.

  71. The first testimony comes from the Magi.

  72. Where is he who was born king of the Jews?

  73. It shouldn't surprise us that a king is among Jesus' earliest titles.

  74. For centuries, it was promised that God would send a king who would sit on the throne of David.

  75. How many times do we read that in the Old Testament?

  76. But this king would not be subject to the same challenges that were faced by the former kings of Israel.

  77. Prophet Micah prophesied that this king would come from Judah.

  78. He is, according to Micah, one who is to be ruler in Israel.

  79. He shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.

  80. He shall be great to the ends of the earth.

  81. Micah's contemporary, Isaiah, said, again, for the passage we're learning,

  82. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.

  83. If you continue in the passage, it reminds us of the increase of his government,

  84. and of peace there will be no end.

  85. And of the throne of David over his kingdom to establish it and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

  86. So at his birth, Jesus was the fulfillment of these prophecies.

  87. He truly was the king of the Jews.

  88. So the Magi come searching for Jesus, they find him, they treat him as a king, and even more.

  89. They worship him, they give him royal gifts.

  90. The Magi's testimony collectively was, he is a king, and they were delighted.

  91. That was not so much true for the current king, Herod.

  92. But in a strange way, Herod also acknowledges and testifies that Jesus is king.

  93. Herod was a ruthless ruler.

  94. He, having murdered his own wife, several sons and relatives, mostly to protect his position.

  95. When he heard that there was a king of the Jews that had been born,

  96. he wanted details regarding this infant's whereabouts.

  97. Now he said, I'm going to worship him, but that was hardly his intent.

  98. He was to arrange a murder of this rival king.

  99. The news troubled the king, and when the king was troubled, everyone else felt the pain.

  100. Herod called together the chief priests and the scribes of the Jews

  101. to find out when and where this Christ was to have been born,

  102. and they shared an understanding of Micah's prophecy.

  103. I find that kind of interesting, where here you have these scribes and rulers of the law,

  104. and we sometimes think very negatively of them, which is probably appropriate,

  105. but they understood the Old Testament scripture, and they quote from Micah's prophecy,

  106. and they share that information with Herod.

  107. Now make no mistake, Herod believed Jesus to be a king.

  108. He wanted no part of this rival.

  109. His extended quote may help us, this extended quote may help us understand this ruler a little bit better.

  110. This comes from a MacArthur commentary on Matthew.

  111. MacArthur writes,

  112. Because he was not Jewish, Herod married a Jewish heiress.

  113. In order to make himself more acceptable to the Jews, he now ruled.

  114. He was a clever and capable warrior, orator, and diplomat.

  115. In times of severe economic hardship, he gave back some tax money collected from the people.

  116. How about that?

  117. During the Great Famine of 25 BC, he melted down gold objects in the palace to buy food for the poor.

  118. He built theaters, racetracks, and other structures to provide entertainment for the people.

  119. In 19 BC, he began the reconstruction of the temple in Jerusalem.

  120. If you read history, you'll find that it's known as the second temple,

  121. or sometimes referred to simply as Herod's temple.

  122. Continuing the quote, he revived Samaria.

  123. He built the beautiful port city of Caesarea in honor of benefactor Caesar Augustus.

  124. He built the remarkable and almost impregnable fortress of Masada,

  125. where in AD 73, nearly a thousand Jewish defenders committed suicide,

  126. rather than to be captured by the Roman general Flavia Silva.

  127. But Herod was also cruel and merciless.

  128. He was incredibly jealous, suspicious, and afraid for his position and power.

  129. Fearing his potential threat, he had the high priest Aristobulus, who was his wife's brother.

  130. He had him drowned.

  131. After which, he provided a magnificent funeral where he pretended to weep.

  132. He then had his wife killed, and then her mother, and two of his own sons.

  133. Five days before Herod's death, about a year or so after Jesus was born,

  134. he had a third son executed.

  135. At that same time, he had the most distinguished citizens of Jerusalem arrested and imprisoned.

  136. And then shortly before Herod died,

  137. he knew that no one would mourn for him, for his death,

  138. so he gave orders for these distinguished citizens,

  139. these prisoners to be executed the moment he died,

  140. in order to guarantee that there would be mourning in Jerusalem.

  141. By his horrific actions, however,

  142. Herod was declaring that Jesus was the true king.

  143. And then we have a testimony of the people in verse 3.

  144. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

  145. Now, to be fair, the reaction of the people had not too much to do with Jesus' birth,

  146. and almost everything to do with Herod's reaction to it.

  147. As we've learned, when Herod got mad, people got hurt.

  148. It's true that people react to the deeds and attitudes of those in power,

  149. both positively and negatively,

  150. even when they know little or nothing about the issues in question.

  151. But what I'm proposing is that when Jesus came to Bethlehem,

  152. he came as king, even as a baby.

  153. And his coming as king shook up the place.

  154. One way or another, most of Israel was affected,

  155. even if they knew little about King Jesus' birth.

  156. Because of Jesus' birth as king of the Jews,

  157. you recall that several families lost their infant children

  158. at the hand of a jealous king.

  159. Well, this is not the end of the record of King Jesus,

  160. so what we're going to do is leave this scene.

  161. We're going to fast forward about 30 years toward the end of Jesus' earthly ministry.

  162. We're going to take a look not when Jesus came to Bethlehem,

  163. but now when Jesus came to Jerusalem.

  164. I'm going to turn first, just to jump ahead of that,

  165. or behind it just a little bit,

  166. but we're going to look at how the people wanted Jesus to be king.

  167. In John chapter 6, verse 15,

    John 6:15

  168. this was following the miraculous feeding of the 5,000,

  169. 5,000 men plus women and children.

  170. John writes this,

  171. Now this technically wasn't in Jerusalem,

  172. this was in Galilee,

  173. but this will help us to see what was happening.

  174. Jesus came as king,

  175. but he didn't come as the kind of king the people were looking for.

  176. You see, they didn't want Jesus to rule over them,

  177. they wanted Jesus to rule over the Romans.

  178. You can see the difference.

  179. Sometimes people today want Jesus to be king to rule over the bad guys,

  180. but not really that interested in ruling over them.

  181. When he refused to submit to their wishes,

  182. they wanted no part of Jesus.

  183. We'll see that in a little bit.

  184. So, people wanted him to be king.

  185. Well, when a little bit later in John's gospel,

  186. in chapter 12,

  187. people even declared Jesus to be king.

  188. You recall the passage of Jesus entering the city of Jerusalem,

  189. this, we sometimes call it the triumphal entry.

  190. In John chapter 12, the passage goes like this,

    John 12 chapter mention

  191. the next day,

  192. the large crowd that had come to the feast

  193. heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  194. So they took branches of palm trees

  195. and went out to meet him,

  196. crying out,

  197. Hosanna,

  198. blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,

  199. and then the next phrase,

  200. even the king of Israel.

  201. Jesus didn't reject their acknowledgement,

  202. but he did not bow to their desires.

  203. A week later,

  204. they were calling for his demise.

  205. I doubt that it can be proven,

  206. but I wonder if some of those who cried out,

  207. Hosanna,

  208. blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,

  209. even the king of Israel,

  210. were not among those who were calling for his crucifixion.

  211. So, the people tried to force him to be king.

  212. They acknowledged that he was king.

  213. But then you have the scene,

  214. just a little bit later,

  215. where Jesus has been arrested,

  216. now he's been brought before Pilate,

  217. the soldiers have worked him over,

  218. and there's a mockery that takes place.

  219. But it's interesting that they mock Jesus,

  220. and they emphasize the idea of king.

  221. Listen to the passage in John 19,

    John 19:1–5

  222. verses 1 to 5,

  223. Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.

  224. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns

  225. and put it on his head,

  226. and arrayed him in a purple robe.

  227. They came up to him, saying,

  228. Hail, king of the Jews!

  229. And struck him with their hands.

  230. Pilate went out again and said to them,

  231. See, I'm bringing him out to you

  232. that you may know that I find no guilt in him.

  233. So Jesus came out,

  234. wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.

  235. Pilate said to them,

  236. Behold the man.

  237. Now earlier, they'd had a discussion,

  238. Jesus and Pilate.

  239. Pilate asked him,

  240. Are you the king of the Jews?

  241. Remember that?

  242. And there was this response from Jesus and Pilate,

  243. very interesting and intriguing time.

  244. Pilate's contemplating this whole idea

  245. of Jesus being king.

  246. And again, there's mockery involved by the soldiers,

  247. and there is somewhat of a mockingness

  248. toward Jesus by Pilate.

  249. But nevertheless, there's an acknowledgement there

  250. that Jesus is king.

  251. Pilate and the soldiers were making light of the truth,

  252. but speaking the truth without intending to do so.

  253. Jesus was the king,

  254. and all they did to him did not change that truth.

  255. So they determined to kill him.

  256. But as Jesus is hanging on the cross,

  257. remember what the sign said over him?

  258. That was to be the charge.

  259. A sign was put on the cross typically to say,

  260. This is what this person died.

  261. This is the crime they've committed.

  262. So that those who would pass by

  263. would see the crime,

  264. and would think to do that crime

  265. results in this punishment.

  266. So here's the crime.

  267. Jesus of Nazareth.

  268. You finish it.

  269. King of the Jews.

  270. So even the charge that's printed

  271. is a declaration that Jesus truly is king.

  272. Now you remember,

  273. the people didn't want that up there.

  274. The rulers didn't want that there.

  275. He said he was.

  276. Look, now what I've written, I've written.

  277. So, you have these testimonies.

  278. The people.

  279. Let's now fast forward

  280. to the very end of the story.

  281. Revelation chapter 19.

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  282. We've looked at Jesus,

  283. when Jesus came to Bethlehem,

  284. and when Jesus came to Jerusalem.

  285. Now we're going to see

  286. when the king comes to reign over the world.

  287. Revelation 19, verses 11 through 16.

    Revelation 19:11–16

  288. Then I saw heaven opened.

  289. Behold, a white horse.

  290. The one sitting on it

  291. is called faithful and true,

  292. and in righteousness he judges and makes war.

  293. His eyes are like a flame of fire,

  294. and on his head are many diadems.

  295. He has a name written

  296. that no one knows but himself.

  297. He's clothed in a robe dipped in blood.

  298. And the name by which he is called

  299. is the word of God.

  300. And the armies of heaven,

  301. arrayed in fine linen,

  302. white and pure,

  303. were following him on white horses.

  304. And from his mouth comes a sharp sword

  305. with which to strike down the nations.

  306. And he will rule them

  307. with a rod of iron.

  308. He will tread the winepress

  309. of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.

  310. On his robe and on his thigh,

  311. he has a name written,

  312. King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

  313. What kind of king is this Jesus?

  314. Well, from that passage,

  315. we could do an exposition of that,

  316. but I want to do something

  317. a little bit shorter than that.

  318. I want to think about

  319. when the Apostle Paul at one point

  320. was talking to Timothy

  321. about who God is

  322. and this concept of the idea of king.

  323. He actually uses a very,

  324. sort of a summary

  325. of what we just read in Revelation 19.

  326. It's 1 Timothy 1, verse 17.

    1 Timothy 1:17

  327. Here's the verse.

  328. To the king of the ages,

  329. immortal, invisible,

  330. the only God,

  331. be honor and glory

  332. forever and ever.

  333. Amen.

  334. Again, what kind of king

  335. is this King Jesus?

  336. Well, he's the forever king.

  337. He's the king of the ages.

  338. It's true that Paul

  339. could have been speaking

  340. more generically

  341. about the triune God

  342. than specifically about Jesus

  343. in this verse,

  344. but surely this applies to Jesus.

  345. He is the king

  346. and he is the king of the ages.

  347. As far as I understand,

  348. the Greeks had no word for eternal.

  349. So in order to describe eternity,

  350. it would be unto the ages

  351. or unto the ages of the ages.

  352. In other words,

  353. when the ages are past,

  354. he remains.

  355. He remains as king.

  356. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.

  357. It's an unshakable kingdom.

  358. It is a kingdom

  359. that is incorruptible.

  360. It is a perfect kingdom.

  361. It's a kingdom

  362. of which he,

  363. Jesus,

  364. is king

  365. and he is the forever king.

  366. He is fully

  367. and publicly,

  368. he will demonstrate this

  369. fully and publicly

  370. in his return.

  371. In chapter 19 of Revelation,

  372. there was talk

  373. of the diadems,

  374. the crowns on his head.

  375. There was talk

  376. of the power

  377. of his ruling

  378. with a rod of iron

  379. and his title

  380. was king of kings

  381. and lord of lords.

  382. He is the forever king.

  383. What kind of king

  384. is Jesus?

  385. The forever king.

  386. He is also

  387. the God king.

  388. Paul described it

  389. as immortal,

  390. invisible,

  391. the only God.

  392. Many kings

  393. believed themselves

  394. to be gods.

  395. Nebuchadnezzar

  396. thought he was a god

  397. to be worshipped.

  398. It cost him

  399. his mind

  400. for seven years.

  401. I wasn't going

  402. to read this

  403. but I've got to read this.

  404. This is great.

  405. This is from

  406. a pagan king.

  407. Nebuchadnezzar,

  408. king of Babylon.

  409. And in Daniel

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  410. chapter 4.

  411. Listen to this.

  412. Nebuchadnezzar

  413. had been

  414. under judgment

  415. by God.

  416. He'd been

  417. eating grass

  418. and all this

  419. for all these years.

  420. And now at the end

  421. of the days,

  422. I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  423. lifted my eyes

  424. to heaven

  425. and my reason

  426. returned to me

  427. and I blessed

  428. the Most High

  429. and praised

  430. and honored

  431. him who lives forever.

  432. Here's his description.

  433. This pagan king,

  434. here's the description

  435. of God

  436. where his dominion

  437. is an everlasting dominion.

  438. His kingdom

  439. endures

  440. from generation

  441. to generation.

  442. All the inhabitants

  443. of the earth

  444. are accounted

  445. as nothing

  446. and he does

  447. according to his will,

  448. according to the host

  449. of heaven

  450. and among the inhabitants

  451. of the earth

  452. and none can stay

  453. his hand

  454. or say to him,

  455. what have you done?

  456. And then he concludes

  457. this way.

  458. Now I,

  459. Nebuchadnezzar,

  460. praise and extol

  461. and honor

  462. the king of heaven

  463. for all his works

  464. are right

  465. and his ways

  466. are just

  467. and those who walk

  468. in pride

  469. he is able to humble.

  470. That's amazing

  471. coming from this king.

  472. King Herod Agrippa I

  473. thought he was a god

  474. or at least god-like

  475. but he failed

  476. to publicly

  477. give God the glory

  478. after giving

  479. this great oratory message.

  480. It cost him his life.

  481. If you read

  482. Acts chapter 12

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  483. it ends with

  484. a very ugly scene

  485. of him being

  486. eaten by worms

  487. and dying.

  488. The prince of this world,

  489. the devil

  490. has a hold

  491. on this world's kingdoms

  492. right now.

  493. He even offered

  494. all of his dominion

  495. to the Lord Jesus

  496. in the temptation

  497. accounts

  498. if Jesus would have

  499. bowed down

  500. to worship him.

  501. He so wanted

  502. to be like God

  503. to rule over all

  504. including God

  505. but that temporary

  506. permitted dominion

  507. my friends

  508. is just about

  509. to come

  510. to an end.

  511. It will cause

  512. Satan an eternity

  513. of torment

  514. in the lake of fire.

  515. There is one king

  516. who is worthy.

  517. It's King Jesus

  518. and he's the God king.

  519. There's one king

  520. there is the God king

  521. the forever king

  522. but Paul also mentioned

  523. he is the honor

  524. and glory forever king.

  525. The honor and glory

  526. forever and ever.

  527. Honor has a way

  528. of turning

  529. into disrespect.

  530. glory

  531. has a tendency

  532. to fade.

  533. The trophies

  534. of the past

  535. become dusty

  536. and corroded

  537. and finally

  538. discarded

  539. but there is one

  540. whose glory

  541. never fades.

  542. It grows brighter

  543. through eternity.

  544. It will never

  545. become old

  546. or routine

  547. to declare

  548. the glory

  549. of King Jesus.

  550. We will be doing

  551. that forever

  552. and we will be

  553. thrilled to do it.

  554. I read somewhere

  555. this

  556. we are not

  557. saved from sin

  558. and changed

  559. into righteousness

  560. for the sake

  561. of pride

  562. but for the sake

  563. of praise.

  564. And when God's

  565. work on us

  566. is done

  567. and we stand

  568. perfected before

  569. Christ in the last

  570. day

  571. we will not

  572. exult in our worth

  573. but we will sing

  574. with millions

  575. of angels

  576. worthy is the lamb

  577. that was slain

  578. to receive power

  579. and wealth

  580. and wisdom

  581. and honor

  582. and glory

  583. and blessing.

  584. Do we get it?

  585. Jesus was

  586. and is

  587. the king.

  588. He is the king

  589. of all wisdom

  590. and knowledge.

  591. There is nothing

  592. that we can do

  593. to con the king.

  594. No question

  595. we can ask

  596. to stump the king.

  597. He is the king

  598. of all power.

  599. There is nothing

  600. we can do

  601. to outmaneuver

  602. the king

  603. or defeat the king

  604. or run from the king

  605. or hide from the king.

  606. He is the king

  607. of all glory

  608. and we must not

  609. think that

  610. we somehow

  611. can siphon

  612. some glory

  613. for ourselves

  614. or accept

  615. from others

  616. what to do

  617. alone to him.

  618. He is the king.

  619. To him belongs

  620. our allegiance

  621. our obedience

  622. our worship

  623. our dedication

  624. to serve him

  625. and to speak well

  626. of him

  627. throughout our lifetime

  628. both with words

  629. and actions.

  630. God's government

  631. is not a democracy

  632. it is a dictatorship.

  633. He alone

  634. is the supreme ruler.

  635. He needs

  636. and receives

  637. no counsel.

  638. He is in perfect control

  639. and he will accomplish

  640. all that he has planned

  641. to do.

  642. To resist him

  643. is foolish

  644. and futile.

  645. To embrace him

  646. and follow after him

  647. and to be subject

  648. to him

  649. is the only response

  650. that makes any sense.

  651. And when we understand

  652. who he is

  653. that response

  654. is pure delight.

  655. In a weird sort of way

  656. the people declared it.

  657. Herod declared it.

  658. Even Satan declared it.

  659. But in a perfect way

  660. God has declared it.

  661. Jesus

  662. is the king.

  663. And I would like

  664. to declare it as well.

  665. He can be

  666. your king.

  667. Now perhaps

  668. you're not convinced.

  669. Let me make

  670. one final appeal

  671. in scripture.

  672. The final appeal

  673. is in

  674. Psalm 2.

  675. I encourage you

  676. to take a look

  677. at that.

  678. Here's the passage.

  679. Why do the nations

  680. rage

  681. and the people

  682. plot in vain?

  683. The kings of the earth

  684. set themselves

  685. and the rulers

  686. take counsel together

  687. against the Lord

  688. and against his anointed

  689. saying

  690. let us burst

  691. their bonds apart

  692. and cast away

  693. their cords from us.

  694. He who sits

  695. in the heavens

  696. laughs.

  697. The Lord

  698. holds them

  699. in derision.

  700. Then he will speak

  701. to them

  702. in his wrath

  703. and terrify them

  704. in his fury

  705. saying

  706. as for me

  707. I have set

  708. my king

  709. on Zion

  710. my holy hill.

  711. I will tell

  712. of the decree

  713. the Lord said to me

  714. you are my son

  715. today I have begotten you

  716. ask of me

  717. and I will make

  718. the nations

  719. your heritage

  720. and the ends

  721. of the earth

  722. your possession.

  723. You shall break

  724. them with a rod

  725. of iron

  726. and dash them

  727. in pieces

  728. like a potter's vessel.

  729. Now therefore

  730. kings

  731. be wise

  732. be warned

  733. oh rulers

  734. of the earth

  735. serve the Lord

  736. with fear

  737. rejoice

  738. with trembling

  739. kiss the sun

  740. lest he be angry

  741. and you perish

  742. in the way

  743. for his wrath

  744. is quickly

  745. kindled

  746. blessed

  747. are all those

  748. who take

  749. refuge

  750. in him.

  751. Kings of the earth

  752. the rulers

  753. continue to take

  754. counsel against

  755. the Lord

  756. and against

  757. his anointed

  758. they continue

  759. to want to

  760. break free

  761. from the

  762. from the

  763. what they sense

  764. is the bondage

  765. that God has

  766. on them

  767. they want to

  768. do their own

  769. thing

  770. they want to

  771. reject God

  772. they want to

  773. be rulers

  774. themselves

  775. what a foolish

  776. idea

  777. he's king

  778. no wonder

  779. God sits

  780. in the heavens

  781. and laughs

  782. not a funny

  783. laugh

  784. a laugh

  785. of scorn

  786. because he

  787. has set

  788. his king

  789. Jesus

  790. on the throne

  791. no wonder

  792. he says

  793. at the end

  794. therefore

  795. oh kings

  796. be wise

  797. be warned

  798. oh rulers

  799. of the earth

  800. serve the Lord

  801. with fear

  802. rejoice

  803. with trembling

  804. kiss the sun

  805. that's an odd

  806. statement

  807. isn't it

  808. James Boyce

  809. helped me

  810. with this

  811. a little bit

  812. he wrote

  813. this is what

  814. these rulers

  815. will not do

  816. of course

  817. it's why

  818. they are

  819. in danger

  820. of final

  821. fierce destruction

  822. make sure

  823. you're not

  824. among them

  825. the rulers

  826. of this world

  827. rage against

  828. Christ

  829. but why

  830. should you

  831. the hands

  832. he holds

  833. forth

  834. for you

  835. to kiss

  836. are hands

  837. that were

  838. pierced

  839. by nails

  840. when he was

  841. crucified

  842. in your place

  843. one day

  844. he's coming

  845. back

  846. coming as a

  847. great judge

  848. of all

  849. on that day

  850. the wicked

  851. will be punished

  852. but today

  853. is the day

  854. of his grace

  855. blessed are

  856. all who take

  857. refuge

  858. in him

  859. it's a reminder

  860. says voice

  861. that the only

  862. refuge

  863. from the wrath

  864. of God

  865. is God's

  866. mercy

  867. unfolded

  868. at the cross

  869. of Jesus

  870. Christ

  871. he's king

  872. is he your

  873. king

  874. let's pray

  875. father how

  876. we thank you

  877. for your

  878. great plan

  879. and purpose

  880. we thank you

  881. for the season

  882. that we

  883. celebrate the

  884. coming of

  885. Jesus

  886. in the flesh

  887. all part

  888. of your

  889. wonderful

  890. glorious

  891. remarkable

  892. providential

  893. purposeful

  894. plan

  895. to redeem

  896. those

  897. whom you

  898. had

  899. chosen

  900. before the

  901. foundation

  902. of the

  903. world

  904. to be in

  905. your family

  906. you revealed

  907. here in your

  908. word

  909. how Jesus

  910. comes as

  911. king

  912. king

  913. and how

  914. he will

  915. rule and

  916. reign

  917. over all

  918. we

  919. I think

  920. I hope

  921. I believe

  922. we in this

  923. local family

  924. of believers

  925. love that

  926. you are our

  927. king

  928. we rejoice

  929. that we are

  930. able to be

  931. able to bow

  932. to your

  933. authority

  934. we even

  935. pray

  936. when we pray

  937. your kingdom

  938. come

  939. we are

  940. praying

  941. that you

  942. will rule

  943. and reign

  944. in our

  945. lives

  946. every day

  947. that we

  948. will not

  949. try to

  950. usurp

  951. your

  952. authority

  953. we will

  954. bow to

  955. what you

  956. called us

  957. to do

  958. may that

  959. increase

  960. in our

  961. daily

  962. walk

  963. may we

  964. not only

  965. live

  966. in light

  967. of the

  968. fact that

  969. you are

  970. king

  971. but may

  972. we declare

  973. your rule

  974. and reign

  975. to all

  976. who will

  977. hear

  978. thank you

  979. for this

  980. great privilege

  981. of worshiping

  982. the king

  983. of heaven

  984. in Jesus

  985. name we

  986. pray

  987. amen
