  1. Go ahead and open your Bibles, please, to 1 John 2.

  2. 1 John 2 is where we're at today.

  3. Do you know the feeling that when you set out to accomplish something

  4. and then you find yourself in way over your head?

  5. This frequently happens to me,

  6. especially when I'm doing some kind of house project.

  7. But fortunately, I have a very helpful neighbor.

  8. My neighbor, Bill, is a retired engineer,

  9. and not only does he have every tool known to man in his garage,

  10. and not only does he know the best way to use those tools,

  11. but he also has lots of spare time to help his very helpless neighbor

  12. whenever I am in need.

  13. Usually I'm outside working on a project.

  14. I find myself, I've bitten off more than I can chew,

  15. and without fail, Bill shows up with the right tool and the right technique,

  16. and he helps me do the job properly, and he stays to help me out.

  17. He likes to come and just help me.

  18. So I'm very thankful for my very helpful neighbor.

  19. I think when the State Farm Insurance people made their little lingo

  20. of like a good neighbor, they were thinking of my neighbor, Bill.

  21. If you've been a Christian for any period of time,

  22. I'm guessing you have found yourself feeling in over your head

  23. when it comes to following Jesus.

  24. It is difficult to shake certain sins.

  25. It is difficult to love other people.

  26. Sometimes it seems impossible,

  27. since sometimes you find yourself surrounded by competing voices,

  28. both outside you and inside you,

  29. that play on your hopes and your confidence.

  30. And when hardship and troubles come,

  31. that gets even more shaken.

  32. Your determination to follow Jesus gets deflated or muddled,

  33. and you find yourself in over your head.

  34. You find yourself in need of help.

  35. Maybe you find yourself there right now.

  36. That's certainly where the Christians in the Roman province of Asia

  37. found themselves at the end of the first century.

  38. And that's why the Apostle John sat down to write this letter of 1 John.

  39. These Christians were struggling.

  40. They found themselves in over their heads,

  41. knowing just who Jesus was,

  42. who they were as Christians,

  43. and how they were to go forward.

  44. Our text for this morning is in 1 John 2,

    1 John 2:26

  45. verses 26 and 27,

  46. just two verses this morning,

  47. but it's a close follow-up to what Caleb preached

  48. several weeks ago before Advent.

  49. And I'd like to go back and read,

  50. starting with verse 18 of 1 John 2.

  51. 1 John 2, starting with verse 18.

  52. Children, it is the last hour.

  53. And as you have heard that Antichrist is coming,

  54. so now many Antichrists have come.

  55. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.

  56. They went out from us, but they were not of us,

  57. for if they had been of us,

  58. they would have continued with us.

  59. But they went out,

  60. that it might become plain that they are all not of us.

  61. But you have been anointed by the Holy One.

  62. Keep that word anointed in the back of your mind.

  63. And you all have knowledge.

  64. I write to you,

  65. not because you do not know the truth,

  66. but because you know it,

  67. and because no lie is of the truth.

  68. Who is the liar but he who denies

  69. that Jesus is the Christ?

  70. This is the Antichrist,

  71. he who denies the Father and the Son.

  72. No one who denies the Son has the Father.

  73. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

  74. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you.

  75. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you,

  76. then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

  77. And this is the promise that he made to us,

  78. eternal life.

  79. I write these things to you

  80. about those who are trying to deceive you.

  81. But the anointing that you receive from him

  82. abides in you,

  83. and you have no need that anyone should teach you.

  84. But as his anointing teaches you about everything

  85. and is true and is no lie,

  86. just as it has taught you,

  87. abide in him.

  88. Several weeks ago,

  89. Caleb preached on these verses

  90. and helped us see that these ancient Christians

  91. were being assaulted,

  92. as the Apostle put it,

  93. by antichrists.

  94. Plural.

  95. These antichrists,

  96. as John called them,

  97. were trying to derail the faith

  98. of those believers

  99. in these churches in Asia

  100. that John was writing to

  101. by shifting their focus

  102. away from the clear,

  103. true,

  104. good news of Jesus.

  105. And although they were feeling

  106. in over their head,

  107. the Apostle John knew

  108. they had a sufficient helper

  109. to help them stand firm

  110. and hold fast to Jesus.

  111. And that helper's name,

  112. although he goes by the name of anointing

  113. in this passage,

  114. is the Holy Spirit.

  115. We'll unpack why he's called that

  116. in a little later,

  117. but that's the big idea

  118. of this passage

  119. here in verses 26 and 27.

  120. God was and is telling his people

  121. to hold fast to Jesus

  122. with the Spirit's sufficient help.

  123. That's our big idea,

  124. hold fast to Jesus

  125. with the Spirit's sufficient help.

  126. Help.

  127. Let me unpack that big idea

  128. with three C's

  129. we find in this passage.

  130. Three C's.

  131. The first is this,

  132. the Apostle John's command

  133. to hold fast to Jesus.

  134. The command is to hold fast to Jesus.

  135. Let me reread verses 26 and 27.

  136. And as I do,

  137. I want you to feel

  138. a building momentum

  139. to the last three words.

  140. Listen.

  141. I write these things to you

  142. about those who are trying

  143. to deceive you.

  144. But the anointing

  145. that you receive from him

  146. abides in you.

  147. And you have no need

  148. that anyone should teach you.

  149. But as his anointing

  150. teaches you about everything

  151. and is true and is no lie,

  152. just as it has taught you,

  153. abide in him.

  154. Abide in him.

  155. That's the command.

  156. That's the thrust

  157. of this passage.

  158. We could also say it this way.

  159. Hold fast.

  160. I believe Caleb summarized it

  161. a few weeks ago

  162. as to stick with Jesus.

  163. We must remain steadfastly

  164. connected to Jesus.

  165. We must hold fast to him,

  166. stick with him,

  167. follow him,

  168. abide with him.

  169. And that,

  170. this is what 1 John is all about.

  171. That command.

  172. The Apostle wants

  173. these struggling Christians

  174. to be firmly connected

  175. to Jesus

  176. for the rest of their days.

  177. And he wants to help them

  178. see that they're doing it

  179. and he wants them

  180. to keep on doing it.

  181. He wants them to have

  182. and maintain

  183. a dynamic,

  184. experiential,

  185. growing relationship

  186. with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  187. And John talks about

  188. this dynamic relationship

  189. all through the letter.

  190. He uses different language

  191. to describe it sometimes.

  192. Sometimes he uses

  193. the language of abiding here.

  194. In chapter 1,

  195. he talks about

  196. having fellowship with God

  197. or being born of God

  198. as Pastor Mike's

  199. going to preach next week.

  200. The famous image

  201. for this relationship

  202. Jesus uses in John 15.

  203. He says,

  204. I am the vine

  205. and you are the branches.

  206. Whoever abides in me

  207. and I in him,

  208. he it is that bears much fruit.

  209. For apart from me,

  210. you can do nothing.

  211. So this relationship

  212. is this organic connection.

  213. It's something that

  214. is already in place

  215. for every Christian

  216. and yet it also

  217. at the same time

  218. must be maintained.

  219. It's this fruitful,

  220. life-giving,

  221. mutual connection

  222. between the vine of Jesus

  223. and the branches

  224. of Christians

  225. in which we depend

  226. on Jesus

  227. in every aspect

  228. of our life.

  229. And here in this letter,

  230. John describes

  231. different ways

  232. that we can maintain

  233. and nurture

  234. this abiding relationship.

  235. First,

  236. we must believe

  237. the truth

  238. of who he is

  239. and what he has done

  240. to save you.

  241. There's this truth

  242. dimension to it.

  243. And second is

  244. we must obey

  245. his commands.

  246. And the third

  247. is we must love

  248. our fellow Christians.

  249. And John uses

  250. these three dimensions,

  251. the truth,

  252. the obedience,

  253. and the love

  254. to kind of,

  255. he constantly cycles

  256. back and forth

  257. with these

  258. throughout the whole letter.

  259. And if any one

  260. of these isn't functioning,

  261. then you're not

  262. abiding in Christ.

  263. Something's off.

  264. The relationship

  265. isn't right.

  266. For example,

  267. if you believe

  268. all the right things

  269. about Jesus,

  270. but,

  271. and maybe you're

  272. really moral,

  273. you keep his commands,

  274. but you're not very loving,

  275. then something's off.

  276. The abiding connection

  277. is not there.

  278. Or you might be

  279. a very nice,

  280. loving,

  281. accepting,

  282. tolerant person,

  283. but if your Jesus

  284. is not the Jesus

  285. of the Bible

  286. and you're living

  287. your life without

  288. regard with

  289. what God tells you

  290. to do,

  291. then you're not

  292. really abiding

  293. in Jesus either.

  294. All three have

  295. to be in place.

  296. And in this particular

  297. part of the letter,

  298. here in John 2,

  299. John's very concerned

  300. about the truth

  301. dimension

  302. of abiding in Jesus.

  303. Look at verse 24.

  304. Let what you heard

  305. from the beginning

  306. abide in you.

  307. That's the teaching

  308. of the truth

  309. of the gospel.

  310. Let what you heard

  311. from the beginning

  312. abides in you,

  313. then you too

  314. will abide

  315. in the Son

  316. and in the Father.

  317. And what was it

  318. that these Christians

  319. heard in the beginning?

  320. It was the truth

  321. of the gospel,

  322. that Jesus is the Christ,

  323. verse 22,

  324. the Messiah.

  325. It's what the Antichrists

  326. were denying.

  327. And so,

  328. according to

  329. verse 24,

  330. the Christians

  331. who are convinced

  332. of this truth

  333. in their hearts

  334. and they hold fast

  335. to it,

  336. they have an abiding

  337. relationship

  338. with God himself.

  339. We must have

  340. this truth

  341. of the gospel

  342. abiding

  343. and functioning

  344. in us

  345. from his word

  346. in order for us

  347. to abide in Christ.

  348. It's essential.

  349. And that's what

  350. John's commanding

  351. in verse 27

  352. at the very end.

  353. Abide in him

  354. through the resting

  355. and the treasuring

  356. of the truth

  357. of the gospel.

  358. And do you see

  359. what's at stake?

  360. Look at verse 25.

  361. This is the promise

  362. he made to us,

  363. eternal life.

  364. When we have

  365. the truth

  366. of the gospel

  367. abiding in us,

  368. we are enjoying

  369. fellowship

  370. with the living God.

  371. And do you know

  372. what that is?

  373. That's eternal life.

  374. What Jesus says

  375. in John 17,

  376. 3,

  377. backs this up.

  378. And this is

  379. eternal life,

  380. that they may know

  381. you,

  382. the only true God,

  383. and Jesus Christ

  384. whom you have sent.

  385. So this abiding

  386. relationship is crucial.

  387. We must have it

  388. as Christians

  389. if we're going to have

  390. eternal life.

  391. And one of the ways

  392. we have it

  393. is through a treasuring

  394. and believing

  395. and trusting

  396. in the truth

  397. of the gospel.

  398. So,

  399. dear brother and sister,

  400. is this important to you?

  401. Is this a priority for you?

  402. Do you come to church?

  403. Do you go to life group

  404. with the thought,

  405. I need God's word

  406. abiding in me

  407. so that I can abide

  408. in Jesus?

  409. and have eternal life.

  410. Is this on your mind

  411. as you think about

  412. your own personal habits

  413. of Bible reading

  414. and meditating

  415. on God's word?

  416. I need God's word

  417. abiding in me

  418. so I can abide

  419. in Jesus

  420. and have eternal life.

  421. This is vital

  422. because

  423. there is something

  424. lurking

  425. all around us

  426. that would steer us

  427. away

  428. from this essential command

  429. to abide in Jesus.

  430. And that brings us

  431. to our second C,

  432. John's concern.

  433. John's concern.

  434. The concern is

  435. the danger

  436. of deception.

  437. The danger

  438. of deception.

  439. Take a look

  440. at verse 26.

  441. I write these things

  442. to you

  443. about those

  444. who are trying

  445. to deceive you.

  446. The reason the apostle

  447. is writing to these Christians

  448. is because

  449. they are still

  450. holding fast

  451. to Jesus

  452. but they are being

  453. assaulted

  454. by deceivers.

  455. As Caleb pointed out

  456. a few weeks ago

  457. these deceivers

  458. were called

  459. the antichrist

  460. because they were

  461. denying the truth

  462. of the gospel

  463. and trying to influence

  464. these faithful Christians

  465. to do the same.

  466. And the particular

  467. deception

  468. that was being

  469. kind of put

  470. forward

  471. in these churches

  472. was a heresy

  473. called Gnosticism

  474. or an early form

  475. of that heresy.

  476. Gnosticism

  477. was kind of

  478. a loosey goosey

  479. spiritualism

  480. that said

  481. that all material

  482. things are bad

  483. and all spiritual

  484. things are good

  485. and the way

  486. that you become good

  487. is by kind of

  488. getting this special

  489. spiritual knowledge.

  490. It kind of looked

  491. like Christianity

  492. on the outside

  493. but once you lifted

  494. the hood

  495. it flatly denied

  496. the teaching

  497. of the Bible

  498. especially the central

  499. truth of who

  500. Jesus is

  501. as the God-man

  502. or Redeemer.

  503. Thankfully

  504. these faithful people

  505. that John's writing to

  506. seem to not have

  507. been influenced

  508. by these deceivers

  509. because by the time

  510. John wrote

  511. these deceivers

  512. had been kicked

  513. out of the church

  514. but at the same time

  515. they were obviously

  516. in need of encouragement

  517. and exhortation

  518. to hold fast.

  519. Church we should share

  520. John's concern.

  521. We should not think

  522. that we are so firm

  523. in our stance

  524. that we become proud

  525. and we fall.

  526. In America

  527. we face grave deceptions.

  528. There are untruths

  529. abounding all around us

  530. and some of them

  531. masquerade

  532. in Christian dress.

  533. Ultimately

  534. deceptive doctrines

  535. kind of boil down

  536. to two basic

  537. kinds of errors.

  538. The first

  539. are the kinds

  540. that take away

  541. from the truth

  542. of the gospel.

  543. That's kind of

  544. what Gnosticism

  545. was doing.

  546. It denies

  547. certain aspects

  548. of the good news message.

  549. They either deny

  550. the problem

  551. that the good news

  552. message addresses

  553. or the solution

  554. to that problem.

  555. They either deny

  556. that sin

  557. is a real issue

  558. and our guilt

  559. before God

  560. is a real issue

  561. and that Jesus

  562. came as a man

  563. and the God-man

  564. to die

  565. in the place

  566. of sinners

  567. to solve that problem.

  568. And so

  569. that's one

  570. of the kinds

  571. of errors

  572. that we face

  573. those that take away

  574. the truth

  575. of the gospel.

  576. For example

  577. Oprah

  578. Disney

  579. other kinds

  580. of pop

  581. American

  582. self-help-ness

  583. is

  584. basically says

  585. our biggest problem

  586. is not

  587. our guilt

  588. before a holy God

  589. but our lack

  590. of individual

  591. fulfillment.

  592. And the biggest

  593. the solution

  594. to that problem

  595. is ourselves.

  596. If we look

  597. deep enough

  598. if we look

  599. inside hard enough

  600. we get to know

  601. our true selves

  602. then we can

  603. truly find

  604. what makes us

  605. fulfilled

  606. and happy.

  607. Or here's one

  608. that's maybe

  609. a little more

  610. closer to home.

  611. This is what

  612. I call

  613. kind of a

  614. good old boy

  615. American theology.

  616. theology.

  617. It's a doctrine

  618. that is kind

  619. of a pop doctrine

  620. that kind

  621. of surrounds us.

  622. We kind

  623. of hear about

  624. it all the time.

  625. This doctrine

  626. says yeah

  627. God exists.

  628. He's a nice

  629. guy.

  630. He's good.

  631. He takes care

  632. of my problems

  633. whenever I need

  634. him.

  635. He wants me

  636. to be happy

  637. and since

  638. I'm basically

  639. not a jerk

  640. I'll go to

  641. heaven when I

  642. die.

  643. It's got some

  644. Christian flavor

  645. to it

  646. but it's missing

  647. the core

  648. of the gospel.

  649. It's not

  650. what the Bible

  651. teaches.

  652. God did not

  653. become a man

  654. and die

  655. on the cross

  656. for basically

  657. good people

  658. who only need

  659. him every once

  660. in a while.

  661. We must be

  662. on our guard

  663. against deceptive

  664. doctrines that

  665. take away

  666. elements of

  667. the truth

  668. of the gospel.

  669. The second

  670. kind of error

  671. is that which

  672. not takes away

  673. but adds

  674. to the gospel.

  675. The truth

  676. of God's word

  677. says that Jesus

  678. alone saves us

  679. from our

  680. greatest problem

  681. but Christians

  682. in particular

  683. can be tempted

  684. to embrace

  685. a kind of

  686. self-righteous

  687. legalism

  688. that kind of

  689. smuggles in

  690. certain things

  691. that says

  692. it's our

  693. trust in Jesus

  694. plus these things

  695. that makes us

  696. truly good Christians.

  697. So for example

  698. those who

  699. say well

  700. it's a certain

  701. kind of lifestyle

  702. that you need

  703. to have

  704. or

  705. a certain

  706. set of doctrines

  707. you must believe

  708. that are outside

  709. the necessary

  710. gospel of Christ

  711. or a certain

  712. political affiliation.

  713. This is what got

  714. the Galatians

  715. in trouble

  716. when we had

  717. our series

  718. in Galatians

  719. a while ago.

  720. That's why Paul

  721. was so adamant

  722. about the need

  723. to keep the good

  724. news of the gospel

  725. squarely in view.

  726. There's been

  727. something I've been

  728. hearing among

  729. Christians from

  730. both sides

  731. lately

  732. that kind of

  733. smacks of this

  734. add to the gospel

  735. flavor.

  736. I've heard Christians

  737. on both the right

  738. and the left

  739. say that

  740. whoever they voted

  741. for, whoever you

  742. voted for in the

  743. presidential election

  744. is a sign of

  745. whether you are

  746. a true or a

  747. false Christian.

  748. That the only

  749. true Christians

  750. voted for Trump

  751. or only true

  752. Christians voted

  753. for Biden.

  754. I've heard it

  755. on both sides.

  756. But if we're

  757. putting it that

  758. way, that's an

  759. important decision

  760. of who to vote

  761. for, but if we're

  762. putting it that

  763. way, then we're

  764. adding to the

  765. gospel.

  766. We're saying it's

  767. Jesus plus a vote

  768. for someone.

  769. But that's, we're

  770. deceiving ourselves

  771. and we're deceiving

  772. others.

  773. That's not what the

  774. gospel says.

  775. What determines

  776. whether we truly

  777. have a relationship

  778. with the living

  779. God is whether we

  780. trust in the good

  781. news of Jesus.

  782. Whether we trust in

  783. his death and

  784. resurrection to

  785. rescue us from our

  786. greatest problem of

  787. guilt before a holy

  788. God.

  789. And we must guard

  790. against taking away

  791. or adding to

  792. this good news

  793. so that we can

  794. continue abiding in

  795. a life-giving

  796. relationship with

  797. Jesus.

  798. Jesus, do you

  799. believe, do you

  800. personally trust in

  801. the sufficient message

  802. of the gospel to

  803. save?

  804. Do you recognize

  805. that you have real

  806. guilt before a real

  807. God that only the

  808. real God-man Jesus

  809. Christ can take away?

  810. That is the truth of

  811. the gospel.

  812. That is the truth we

  813. must hold to and

  814. treasure more than

  815. anything else because

  816. we ought to be

  817. concerned about

  818. deceptive doctrines

  819. because they are

  820. nearer than we

  821. think and we are

  822. not as clever as we

  823. think and because

  824. the stakes are really

  825. high.

  826. But although we

  827. should be concerned

  828. we also must have

  829. great confidence

  830. and that is our

  831. third C.

  832. We must have

  833. great confidence.

  834. John had great

  835. confidence in

  836. something for

  837. these Christians

  838. because like my

  839. neighbor Bill we

  840. have a helper

  841. very close at

  842. hand as we

  843. seek to hold

  844. fast to the

  845. truth that is

  846. in Jesus.

  847. And that confidence

  848. is the sufficient

  849. anointing of the

  850. Holy Spirit.

  851. The sufficient

  852. anointing of the

  853. Holy Spirit.

  854. Take a look at

  855. verse 27.

  856. But the anointing

  857. that you receive

  858. from him abides

  859. in you and you

  860. have no need that

  861. anyone should teach

  862. you.

  863. But as his

  864. anointing teaches

  865. you about everything

  866. and is true and

  867. is no lie just as

  868. it has taught you

  869. abide in him.

  870. So it's obvious

  871. that although John

  872. is writing out of

  873. concern that there

  874. are wolves among

  875. his flock he's

  876. confident that

  877. these Christians

  878. have what it

  879. takes to hold

  880. fast to Jesus.

  881. And why is he so

  882. confident?

  883. It's because of

  884. this anointing.

  885. It's mentioned

  886. twice in this verse

  887. it's also mentioned

  888. back in verse 20.

  889. Now there's a

  890. little bit of

  891. debate about what

  892. this anointing is.

  893. Scholars debate

  894. about whether it's

  895. one thing or

  896. another but the

  897. most probable

  898. explanation is that

  899. it is a reference

  900. to the Holy Spirit.

  901. I think that will

  902. become clearer as I

  903. keep going.

  904. But why wouldn't

  905. John just say

  906. the Holy Spirit?

  907. Why does he say

  908. anointing?

  909. Well it's hard to

  910. be sure but what

  911. is associated most

  912. with someone who

  913. is anointed by God

  914. both in the Old

  915. and the New

  916. Testament is that

  917. they are specially

  918. chosen and

  919. sufficiently equipped

  920. to accomplish

  921. God's purpose.

  922. They're specially

  923. chosen and

  924. sufficiently equipped

  925. to accomplish

  926. God's purpose.

  927. The kings and

  928. priests in the

  929. Old Testament who

  930. were anointed with

  931. oil to signify that

  932. they were set apart

  933. and chosen by God

  934. had a purpose that

  935. God was designated

  936. them for.

  937. And more than

  938. once when those

  939. individuals were

  940. anointed with oil

  941. the Spirit of God

  942. came upon them and

  943. equipped them

  944. sufficiently with

  945. God's own strength

  946. and ability to

  947. accomplish that

  948. purpose.

  949. So when David was

  950. anointed by Samuel

  951. the Spirit of God

  952. came upon him as a

  953. seal of God's

  954. special choosing of

  955. David and the

  956. sufficient equipping

  957. with the ability to

  958. accomplish the

  959. purpose.

  960. Interestingly enough

  961. when Jesus came

  962. around he was never

  963. taken aside by John

  964. the Baptist or a

  965. prophet and anointed

  966. with oil.

  967. And yet he's called

  968. the anointed one

  969. the Messiah.

  970. And yet the

  971. gospels take special

  972. pains to show how

  973. the Spirit of God

  974. visibly came upon

  975. Jesus in full measure

  976. at his baptism.

  977. And that's how his

  978. anointing is explained

  979. in Acts 10 38.

  980. He's described as being

  981. anointed by God with

  982. the Holy Spirit.

  983. Specially chosen

  984. sufficiently equipped

  985. for his role as our

  986. Messiah.

  987. And guess what?

  988. The moment that you

  989. put your faith in

  990. Christ for the

  991. forgiveness of your

  992. sins and you became

  993. united with Christ

  994. you share in his

  995. anointing.

  996. You are given the

  997. gift of the Holy

  998. Spirit who was also

  999. on your Savior.

  1000. And this therefore

  1001. shows that you are

  1002. specially chosen and

  1003. sufficiently equipped

  1004. to do what God

  1005. asked you to do.

  1006. Which is what?

  1007. To abide in Christ.

1008. To hold fast to him.

  1009. Even when you're

  1010. surrounded by deceitful

  1011. doctrines around us.

  1012. Even with deceitful

  1013. heart within us.

  1014. We are sufficiently

  1015. equipped and

  1016. particularly chosen

  1017. to abide in Jesus.

1018. And we have a helper

1019. to help us do that.

  1020. The Holy Spirit.

  1021. Look at how this

  1022. anointing is described

  1023. in verse 27.

  1024. There are four things

1025. I want to point out.

  1026. First, this anointing

  1027. is received.

  1028. The anointing that you

  1029. received from him.

1030. Jesus said in John 14,

  1031. 15, 16, I am sending

  1032. the Spirit to you.

  1033. The Father is going

  1034. to send the Spirit

1035. to you in my name.

  1036. And so this anointing,

1037. this helper, is a gift

  1038. to be received.

  1039. We just unpacked

  1040. Christmas gifts

  1041. from around the tree.

  1042. We don't earn them.

  1043. We haven't kind of

  1044. done certain things

  1045. to deserve them.

  1046. They're just given.

1047. And that's the Holy Spirit.

1048. He is a gift to be

  1049. received with much

  1050. gratitude because of

1051. what a gift he is

  1052. to us in Christ.

  1053. Secondly, notice that

  1054. John says this anointing

  1055. abides in you.

  1056. This very sufficient helper

  1057. is continuously available,

  1058. always present,

  1059. and always active.

1060. A little later in his letter,

  1061. John's going to

  1062. kind of unpack more

  1063. about this Spirit

  1064. abiding in us.

  1065. Look at 1 John 3, 24.

  1066. Whoever keeps his commandments

  1067. abides in God

  1068. and God in him.

1069. And by this we know

1070. that he abides in us

  1071. by the Spirit

1072. whom he has given us.

  1073. Do you hear what

  1074. John is saying here?

1075. We're not the only ones

  1076. who abide.

1077. If we abide in God,

1078. if we hold fast to him

  1079. in faith,

  1080. he's doing the same

  1081. with us.

  1082. He's abiding in us.

  1083. The abiding is mutual.

  1084. A relationship with God

1085. is not this one-way street

  1086. where he's demanding

1087. that we come 100% to him.

1088. He also comes 100% to us.

  1089. He abides with us

1090. as we abide in him.

1091. But how does that happen?

1092. God the Father is in heaven.

  1093. Jesus his Son

1094. is at his right side.

  1095. How can the eternal

  1096. transcendent God

  1097. who cannot be seen

  1098. with our eyes

  1099. abide with us

  1100. and even in us?

1101. The answer is in the Spirit.

  1102. The anointing.

  1103. By this we know

1104. that he abides in us

  1105. by the Spirit

1106. whom he has given us.

  1107. The Holy Spirit

  1108. is God's personal agent

  1109. of God's presence

  1110. and power

  1111. in the life

  1112. of a believer.

1113. We are able to experience

  1114. the presence of God

  1115. and his power

1116. to live the Christian life

  1117. only through the Spirit

1118. whom he sent to be with us

1119. and to abide with us

  1120. forever.

  1121. Friends, the Holy Spirit

1122. has to be one of the most

  1123. overlooked treasures

  1124. you possess.

  1125. God's very presence

  1126. is with you.

  1127. In you.

  1128. Always accessible.

  1129. Always working.

  1130. Always attending

  1131. to your greatest need.

  1132. We should be overwhelmed

  1133. with gratitude

  1134. for this incredible gift.

  1135. Third,

1136. is that this anointing teaches.

  1137. This anointing teaches.

1138. Look at verse 27 again.

1139. Listen for the teach word.

  1140. You have no need

1141. that anyone should teach you

  1142. but as his anointing

  1143. teaches you about everything

  1144. and is true

  1145. and is no lie

1146. just as it has taught you

  1147. abide in him.

  1148. Now by saying this

  1149. John isn't denying

  1150. the need for teachers

  1151. in the local church.

  1152. If he believed that

  1153. he wouldn't be writing

  1154. to this church

  1155. instructing them

  1156. and admonishing them.

  1157. Rather,

  1158. John's emphasizing

1159. that one of the Spirit's

  1160. main responsibilities

  1161. is to teach us

  1162. and his teaching

  1163. is effective

  1164. and it is sufficient

  1165. for us.

1166. And the way he teaches us

  1167. is through

  1168. the faithful instruction

  1169. of God's word

  1170. in the local church.

  1171. The Spirit's teaching

  1172. is sufficient.

  1173. He teaches us about,

  1174. notice he says,

  1175. everything.

  1176. Now it doesn't mean

  1177. about physics

  1178. or chemistry.

  1179. He's talking about

  1180. everything necessary

  1181. for us to abide

  1182. in Christ.

  1183. Given the threat

  1184. of deceptive doctrines

  1185. around us,

1186. that is a huge comfort.

  1187. That is a great

  1188. source of confidence.

  1189. The Spirit is our

  1190. ever-present guide

  1191. leading us

1192. into all that we need

  1193. to know and believe

  1194. about Jesus

1195. in order to hold fast

  1196. to him

  1197. for eternal life.

1198. But how does he do that?

  1199. How does the Spirit

  1200. teach us?

1201. Listen to what Jesus says

  1202. in John 14, 26.

  1203. But the Helper,

  1204. the Holy Spirit,

  1205. whom the Father

1206. will send in my name,

  1207. he will teach you

  1208. all things

  1209. and bring to your

  1210. remembrance

1211. all that I have said

  1212. to you.

  1213. Bring to our remembrance

  1214. what Jesus

1215. has already said to us.

1216. When we think of the Holy Spirit

  1217. as our teacher,

1218. we don't need to think about

  1219. like some professor

  1220. doing an info dump

  1221. on ignorant students.

  1222. Rather,

  1223. we should think of

  1224. our Holy Spirit teacher

  1225. as a guide

1226. on a long hiking trip.

  1227. He's not only knowledgeable

  1228. of the trail,

1229. but he is with us

  1230. on the journey

  1231. right in step

  1232. with us,

  1233. helping us know

1234. what we need to know

1235. and how we need to know it

  1236. at the right time,

  1237. at the right moment,

  1238. because we often forget

  1239. what we already know.

  1240. Or we don't realize

  1241. how important

  1242. and how applicable

  1243. it really is.

  1244. How real,

  1245. how true

  1246. and certain

  1247. it is.

  1248. He applies

  1249. the truth of Jesus

  1250. to our hearts

1251. at just the right time

1252. and in just the right way

  1253. to make Jesus

  1254. real

  1255. and beautiful

  1256. and delightful

  1257. to us.

  1258. There are different

  1259. kinds of knowing.

  1260. There's lots of things

  1261. that we know

1262. that's stored in our brains.

1263. Lots of bits of data

  1264. and knowledge,

  1265. but there's a difference.

  1266. I think everyone

  1267. probably recognizes

  1268. the difference

  1269. between kind of a,

  1270. okay,

  1271. nod my head

  1272. and a,

  1273. oh,

  1274. yeah.

  1275. I think I see that

  1276. for the first time

1277. even though I've known it

  1278. for a long time.

  1279. And that's the Spirit's job.

  1280. It's to bring us

  1281. from a,

  1282. uh-huh,

  1283. to a,

  1284. oh.

  1285. That's His job.

  1286. So when we are

  1287. disoriented on the path,

  1288. He teaches us

  1289. by fixing our gaze

  1290. on our true identity

  1291. as God's children

  1292. in Christ.

  1293. When we are feeling

  1294. the sting of condemnation,

  1295. He teaches us

  1296. by fixing our eyes

  1297. on Jesus' finished work

  1298. on the cross

  1299. and making it real

  1300. and beautiful

  1301. to us.

  1302. And we have,

  1303. when we wonder

  1304. on our way

  1305. from the,

  1306. from the path,

  1307. He teaches us

  1308. by convincing us

  1309. that God's way

  1310. is indeed better

  1311. and helps us

  1312. forsake our sin.

  1313. When we're apathetic,

  1314. when our faith

  1315. feels like

  1316. zero percent,

  1317. He teaches us

  1318. by blowing back

  1319. into flame

  1320. our faith

  1321. and our desire

  1322. to abide

  1323. in Christ again.

  1324. So the Holy Spirit

  1325. teaches us.

  1326. But lastly,

1327. not only does He teach us,

  1328. but what He teaches

  1329. is true.

  1330. Did you notice that?

  1331. and His anointing

  1332. teaches you

  1333. about everything

  1334. and is true

  1335. and is no lie.

  1336. The Spirit's ministry

  1337. is all about

  1338. the truth.

  1339. He is called

  1340. the Spirit of truth.

  1341. We can be utterly

  1342. confident

  1343. in our guide

  1344. because He communicates

  1345. only what He hears

  1346. from the Father

  1347. and from the Son

  1348. and declares it

  1349. effectively

  1350. to our hearts

  1351. and our minds.

1352. When I was in college,

  1353. I took a philosophy course.

  1354. I was about 20 years old

1355. and I had to read

  1356. some writings

  1357. of some philosophers

  1358. that were definitely

  1359. denied

  1360. vehemently

  1361. the truth

  1362. of the gospel.

  1363. And I remember

  1364. wrestling with these

  1365. for a long time

  1366. in my room

1367. and trying to figure out

  1368. what I believed

  1369. about all this

  1370. and I decided

  1371. to take a walk.

1372. And so I was walking

  1373. through the campus.

1374. It was kind of a cold night

  1375. and I remember

1376. looking up at the stars

1377. and as I was gazing

  1378. at the stars,

  1379. kind of praying

  1380. and my mind

  1381. was fuzzy,

  1382. it's like this certainty

  1383. just dropped

  1384. into my mind

  1385. of what I know

  1386. about Christ

  1387. is true.

1388. It has to be true.

  1389. And it wasn't

  1390. necessarily words

  1391. or logical arguments,

  1392. it was just

  1393. this certainty.

  1394. It was this conviction

  1395. and settledness

  1396. about what I knew

  1397. to be true.

  1398. Looking back on that,

  1399. I know it was

  1400. the Holy Spirit

  1401. because I've had

  1402. that kind of clarity

  1403. happen so many

  1404. different times

  1405. in different ways

  1406. before where

1407. Jesus is all of a sudden

1408. clear and real to me

  1409. because of the Spirit's

  1410. work in my heart.

  1411. It is the Spirit's

  1412. marvelous ministry

  1413. to make Christ

  1414. real,

  1415. certain to us.

  1416. It causes us to

  1417. not just believe

  1418. things intellectually

1419. but a kind of joyful

  1420. resolve to trust

  1421. and obey Him

  1422. because we realize

  1423. how real and true

  1424. He is.

  1425. So this wonderful helper

  1426. is perhaps even better

  1427. than a good neighbor.

  1428. He's a source

  1429. of much confidence

  1430. for us

  1431. as we seek

  1432. to hold fast

  1433. with Jesus.

  1434. As the Spirit

  1435. has already

  1436. taught you,

  1437. church,

  1438. continue

  1439. abiding

  1440. in Jesus.

  1441. Find ways

  1442. to partner

  1443. with the Spirit

  1444. of God

  1445. to strengthen

  1446. that abiding

  1447. relationship.

  1448. That happens

  1449. through our

  1450. spiritual disciplines,

  1451. through our reading

  1452. of God's Word,

  1453. through our praying.

  1454. If we are not

  1455. intentionally partnering

  1456. with the Spirit

  1457. by abiding

  1458. in God's Word,

  1459. then He doesn't

  1460. have much

  1461. to work with.

  1462. So,

  1463. whatever you need

  1464. to do in 2021,

  1465. whatever resolution,

  1466. whatever decision,

  1467. whatever habit

  1468. you need to form,

  1469. take steps

  1470. to partner

  1471. with the Holy Spirit

  1472. to abide

  1473. in God's Word

  1474. so that you may

  1475. abide in Christ

  1476. and the Spirit

  1477. can be at work

  1478. in you,

  1479. strengthening that.

  1480. But that also

  1481. happens not just

  1482. in our spiritual

  1483. disciplines.

  1484. It happens

  1485. through a daily,

  1486. moment by moment,

  1487. acknowledgement

  1488. and understanding,

  1489. recognizing

  1490. of God's presence,

  1491. recognizing,

  1492. Brother Lawrence

  1493. called it the practicing

  1494. the presence of God,

  1495. recognizing that

  1496. in every step

  1497. throughout the day,

  1498. I am with God

1499. and He is with me

  1500. because the Spirit's

  1501. presence is at work

  1502. and He is sufficient.

  1503. He is there

  1504. to help,

  1505. to reorient my gaze

  1506. so when I'm sitting

  1507. in my office

  1508. and I'm working

  1509. or if I'm home

  1510. or I'm driving,

  1511. there are ways

  1512. for me to abide

  1513. in Christ

  1514. even in those

  1515. small moments

  1516. throughout the day,

  1517. recognizing that

  1518. He is there.

  1519. Brothers and sisters,

  1520. do you find yourself

  1521. in need of help?

  1522. Do you find yourself

  1523. shaky or weary?

  1524. Are you letting go

  1525. of Jesus?

  1526. Do you even care

  1527. about abiding in Him?

  1528. Remember,

  1529. this passage

  1530. is calling us

  1531. to remember

  1532. the call

  1533. and the command

  1534. to abide

  1535. in Christ,

1536. to hold fast to Him

  1537. because it is

  1538. eternal life.

  1539. There is no life

  1540. outside of Jesus.

  1541. Hear that command

  1542. to hold fast.

  1543. And the enemy

  1544. of your soul

  1545. wants nothing less

1546. for you to be deceived

  1547. into thinking

  1548. that there is life

  1549. outside of Jesus.

  1550. that there is

  1551. a more desirable

  1552. source of rest

  1553. or peace

  1554. than Jesus Christ.

  1555. So hear the concern

  1556. for your soul

  1557. in this passage.

  1558. But also,

  1559. most of all,

  1560. remember

  1561. that your sufficient

  1562. helper,

  1563. the Holy Spirit,

  1564. is with you.

  1565. Remember the confidence

  1566. that you have

  1567. in Him

  1568. as your guide

  1569. whose consistent

  1570. purpose

  1571. is to make Christ

  1572. tangibly real

  1573. and delightful

  1574. to your soul.

  1575. He is better

  1576. than a good neighbor.

  1577. He dwells

  1578. in you,

  1579. with you,

  1580. and is constantly,

  1581. tirelessly working

  1582. for your good.

  1583. So,

  1584. church,

  1585. let's abide in Him.

  1586. Let's hold fast

  1587. to Him.

  1588. We are often

  1589. in over our heads,

  1590. but we have

  1591. a sufficient helper

  1592. who is with us.

  1593. Let's hold fast

  1594. to Him together

  1595. with the Spirit's help.

  1596. Let's pray.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Lord,

  1599. apart from

  1600. your Holy Spirit's work,

  1601. we are in

  1602. over our heads.

  1603. We are sunk.

  1604. We are so thankful

  1605. for your Spirit

  1606. who makes

  1607. Jesus

  1608. real

  1609. and certain

  1610. and beautiful

  1611. and delightful

  1612. to us.

  1613. God,

  1614. we ask for

  1615. more and more

  1616. and more

  1617. of that

  1618. in 2021.

  1619. God,

  1620. strengthen our faith

  1621. by your Spirit.

  1622. Lord,

  1623. would you

  1624. uphold our resolve

  1625. to trust

  1626. and to obey you

  1627. more and more.

  1628. Lord,

  1629. cause us to delight

  1630. in Jesus

1631. and to abide in Him

  1632. that we might have

  1633. eternal life.

1634. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.
