  1. When the Sabbath was passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought

  2. spices so that they may go and anoint him, thinking the corpse of Jesus.

  3. And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb

  4. and they were saying to one another, who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance

  5. of the tomb?

  6. And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back.

  7. It was very large.

  8. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white

  9. robe, and they were alarmed.

  10. And he said to them, do not be alarmed.

  11. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.

  12. He has risen.

  13. He is not here.

  14. See the place where they laid him?

  15. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he, Jesus, is going before you to Galilee.

  16. There you will see him just as he told you.

  17. And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishing had seized them.

  18. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

  19. That's a rather odd way to end the gospel.

  20. Kind of leaves you hanging.

  21. We've experienced a lot of that this year.

  22. What a year it has been.

  23. It's been one crisis after another, hasn't it?

  24. And each crisis seems to raise its own set of issues that you need to make decisions on.

  25. In order to make decisions on that, you need to gather information.

  26. In order to gather information, you need to have sources of information that you can trust.

  27. Who do you believe is telling the truth?

  28. Who's telling the truth about the coronavirus?

  29. Remember that a year ago.

  30. Who's telling the truth about masks, about social distancing?

  31. Who's telling the truth about George Floyd, Jacob Blake, and all the social justice issues that have erupted?

  32. Who's telling the truth about the future of our nation?

  33. Presidential debates.

  34. What is fake news?

  35. And what is true news?

  36. What a year.

  37. And even though the coronavirus, matters pertaining to social justice, the future of our nation, these are all very important things.

  38. None of these is what is most important.

  39. What is of first importance.

  40. And what is of first importance is what is true about Jesus of Nazareth.

  41. Because eternity is riding on what you believe about him.

  42. I've been talking to a friend about Jesus.

  43. And she's at this really interesting intersection.

  44. She wants to know more about Jesus.

  45. And she's open to talking about Jesus.

  46. But she has got questions about whether she can trust what the Bible says about Jesus.

  47. It's valid.

  48. Is the Bible a source of fake news about Jesus?

  49. Or is the Bible true news, good news about Jesus?

  50. You see, the Bible and the Gospels in particular claim to present true good news about this person, Jesus of Nazareth.

  51. Now, I'm not going to make a defense of the reliability of the New Testament this morning.

  52. But if you're not a Christian and you've been wondering about how reliable are the Gospels, these biographies of Jesus, I've got two of these books.

  53. You can grab one for me at the Kringle table out on the sidewalk on your way out.

  54. I'd be happy to give this to you.

  55. This helps you understand why you can actually trust that what the Gospels are saying are true.

  56. What the Gospel writers assume is that the reader will take what they're saying at face value.

  57. They present their information about Jesus as eyewitness accounts.

  58. So, this morning, if you're not a Christian, would you approach the Gospel of Mark with me?

  59. At face value.

  60. That these are eyewitness accounts of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

  61. So, let me, as you can see on the back of your bulletin, there's a little outline.

  62. I'm going to give you the Gospel background of the Gospel of Mark.

  63. And then we're going to kind of dive into those eight verses in Mark chapter 16.

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  64. And then I'm going to point out the extraordinary claim that's being made here.

  65. And at the end of the sermon, I'm going to kind of bring it to bear on where each of us is living in this room.

  66. The Bible can be divided into two big sections.

  67. The Old Testament and the New Testament.

  68. And the Old Testament is about a promise God made to a people, Israel.

  69. And Israel ended up failing to keep that promise.

  70. But all throughout the Old Testament, there are these prophecies, these anticipations of someone who would be coming.

  71. The Messiah.

  72. The Christ.

  73. A king who is from the line of David.

  74. And he would come and he would establish a new covenant.

  75. A new promise God makes to a new people.

  76. And what you need to understand about the Old Testament, all these sacred writings were written before Jesus came.

  77. The New Testament are God's sacred writings after Jesus came.

  78. And what the New Testament, it claims and explains is that Jesus is that long-awaited Christ.

  79. The Messiah.

  80. The king.

  81. The king.

  82. And he came to establish a new relationship between God and sinners through his blood.

  83. At the beginning of the New Testament, you have four biographies.

  84. They are called Gospels.

  85. And each biography is presenting Jesus to the reader, to the hearer, to show Jesus as the Christ.

  86. This king who does miracles, whose teaching is unlike anyone else.

  87. How he engaged people was absolutely phenomenal because it was God engaging with people.

  88. These four Gospels point to Jesus being the Christ.

  89. And each Gospel has its own emphases and its own audience that it's aimed at.

  90. The Gospel of Mark emphasizes, it shows the eyewitness accounts of Jesus.

  91. They're believed to be the actual eyewitness accounts of the Apostle Peter that Mark shares with us, the readers.

  92. Now, I'm going to ask Robin to put up Mark 1.1.

  93. This is the very first verse of this Gospel.

  94. And why I'm asking her to do that is to let you know what Mark is setting out to do in writing this biography for us.

  95. At the beginning of the Gospel of Mark, Mark says,

  96. The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  97. And here's what you need to see.

  98. You need to see three things.

  99. Jesus is the name of this man who is totally man.

  100. You see at the end that title, the Son of God.

  101. That's a claim that Jesus, the Christ, is totally God.

  102. And Jesus Christ, Christ isn't his last name.

  103. It's a title.

  104. He also goes by that same title, the Christ.

  105. Jesus talks about himself as the Son of Man.

  106. That's another way of describing himself as the Christ.

  107. And so all throughout the Gospel of Mark, Mark weaves these claims together.

  108. God the Father at Jesus' baptism says,

  109. My beloved Son with whom I'm well pleased.

  110. At Jesus' transfiguration he says,

  111. This is my beloved Son.

  112. Listen to him.

  113. God is claiming this man to be his son.

  114. And this all climaxes.

  115. Jackson did such a great job this past Friday night.

  116. Showing us from Mark 15 how all this weaves together.

  117. Because in Mark 15 you have these six claims of Jesus being the King of the Jews.

  118. The King of Israel.

  119. And they were all designed to be mocking Jesus at his crucifixion.

  120. It ended up being true.

  121. That title King of the Jews is a claim of Jesus being the Messiah.

  122. It's just another way of saying Christ.

  123. And it's at the very climax of Mark 15.

  124. That Jesus has this piece of wood above his head saying King of the Jews.

  125. Jesus cries out, Eloi, Eloi, Lema, Sabachthani.

  126. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  127. He breathes his last.

  128. And in the book of Mark,

  129. the only human being that recognizes him as being the Son of God

  130. is one of the Gentile Roman centurions who oversaw his death.

  131. Truly, this was the Son of God.

  132. And then in verses 40 and 41 of chapter 15,

  133. we see three women at the cross watching what just happens.

  134. Mary Magdalene.

  135. Mary, the mother of Joseph.

  136. Moses and James.

  137. That's Jesus' mother, Mary.

  138. And Salome.

  139. And then at the burial in 1542 through 47,

  140. two of those three women watch where Joseph of Arimathea lays the corpse of Jesus.

  141. Joseph laid the corpse of Jesus in his own tomb.

  142. It was the tomb of a rich man.

  143. And Mary and Mary saw exactly where that body was laid.

  144. Jesus had been removed from the cross and entombed in Joseph's tomb all before the Sabbath set.

  145. That's a little background that leads us up to Mark 16, 1 through 8.

  146. And in Mark 16, 1 through 8, there are actually three scenes.

  147. There's a scene of these women going to the tomb.

  148. That's verses 1 through 4.

  149. There's a scene of these women in the tomb.

  150. That's 5 through 7.

  151. And then there's the scene of these women coming from the tomb.

  152. That's verse 8.

  153. When it comes to these women going to the tomb in verses 1 through 4,

  154. I just want you to notice a few things.

  155. Remember, notice who these women are.

  156. Mark names the three.

  157. Mary Magdalene.

  158. Mary the mother of James.

  159. That's Mary the mother of Joseph as well.

  160. The mother of Jesus.

  161. And Salome.

  162. These are the women that had just seen Jesus crucified just a couple days before.

  163. And these are the women who saw Joseph lay the body of Jesus in the tomb.

  164. What I also want you to notice in verses 1 and 2 is when this is taking place.

  165. This is after the Sabbath.

  166. The Sabbath has passed.

  167. Verse 2, it's very early in the first day of the week at sunrise.

  168. They're getting an early start.

  169. They have fragrant spices to anoint the body of Jesus with.

  170. But here's what you need to understand.

  171. In the Jewish mind in the first century,

  172. they thought of a day differently than we think of a day.

  173. We think of a day starting at kind of like 12 a.m. going to 11.59 p.m.

  174. For the Jew, they thought of a day in terms of sunsets.

  175. One sunset to another.

  176. And so for the Jewish mind, the Sabbath was Saturday.

  177. And it actually began on sunset of Friday.

  178. And that Sabbath go from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday.

  179. What we see here is that these women, very early Sunday morning,

  180. the first day of the week,

  181. what we as Christians call the Lord's Day,

  182. because it's the day that Jesus was raised,

  183. they're on their way to the tomb.

  184. In verse 3, notice what they're saying to each other.

  185. They're talking about who's going to roll away the stone.

  186. This is the massive stone that was rolled in place by Joseph of Arimathea.

  187. You can see it at the end of Mark 15, verse 46.

    Mark 15:46

  188. Most likely it was Joseph and a couple other guys that moved the stone in place.

  189. These huge stones were usually on little ramps that use gravity to drop into place

  190. before this tomb cut out of a cliff side.

  191. So they're wondering,

  192. who's going to move this stone for us?

  193. So let's not miss what's going on here.

  194. These three women, early Sunday morning, are calm.

  195. They're in their right mind.

  196. And they are expecting to see the corpse of Jesus in the tomb.

  197. Verse 4, they look up,

  198. and they see the massive stone has already been removed.

  199. There's no sense of panic.

  200. I'm guessing they're kind of relieved.

  201. Oh, great.

  202. Somebody move the stone.

  203. Let's finish our work.

  204. This is the first scene of the resurrection account.

  205. Everything changes in this next scene.

  206. Verse 5 and 7, in the tomb,

  207. this is the hot spot of the resurrection account.

  208. And you know how you can tell?

  209. By what happens before and after.

  210. Before we have these women who are in their right mind,

  211. they're expecting to find the corpse of Jesus,

  212. and then in verse 8, if you look at verse 8,

  213. they've completely freaked out.

  214. They are trembling.

  215. They're astonished.

  216. The whole gospel of Mark ends with the word fear.

  217. Whatever happened in between them going into the tomb

  218. and coming out of the tomb

  219. was some kind of forever life-transforming experience.

  220. So what happened?

  221. Let's look at verse 5.

  222. They walk into the tomb,

  223. expecting to see the corpse of Jesus

  224. laid out on a platform,

  225. cut into the rock,

  226. and look at what they find.

  227. And entering the tomb,

  228. they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

  229. dressed in a white robe.

  230. He was sitting on the platform

  231. where the body of Jesus would be laid,

  232. at the right side of that.

  233. He's wearing white.

  234. This is an angel.

  235. And for those of you who are not familiar,

  236. all throughout the Bible,

  237. angels are those who are messengers of God.

  238. They declare God's news.

  239. He goes unnamed.

  240. But the freak out commences.

  241. Look at the end of verse 5.

  242. Mark writes it,

  243. and they were alarmed.

  244. That is like a massive understatement

  245. because they were completely flipping out.

  246. Could you imagine if you were one of these ladies

  247. going into this tomb,

  248. what would be rolling through your mind

  249. if you didn't see the corpse of Jesus

  250. but saw this cute, young, white guy

  251. in a white robe?

  252. I'm not sure if he was a white guy,

  253. but he was in a white robe.

  254. I think you'd be flipping out too.

  255. And then we're drawn into what this angel says.

  256. So they're freaking out,

  257. and this angel says to them,

  258. ladies, don't freak out.

  259. Don't be alarmed.

  260. Don't panic.

  261. You're in the right place.

  262. He knows who they're seeking.

  263. You seek Jesus of Nazareth.

  264. Do you know how that would have struck Mary,

  265. Jesus' mother?

  266. You seek your son.

  267. And then he said,

  268. who was crucified?

  269. This angel in the tomb

  270. on the third day since Jesus' crucifixion

  271. knew that Jesus had been crucified.

  272. In fact, all of heaven knew

  273. that Jesus, totally God, totally man,

  274. had been crucified on that first Good Friday.

  275. all heaven knew.

  276. And then he says this.

  277. He has risen.

  278. He has risen.

  279. He's not here.

  280. He's not here.

  281. He's not here.

  282. He's not here.

  283. He's not here.

  284. And then what's really interesting

  285. is that he then points to the empty platform

  286. and says, see, here's where they laid him.

  287. Nothing.

  288. He's not here.

  289. He's not here.

  290. He's not here.

  291. He's not here.

  292. This is the extraordinary claim

  293. at the end of the Gospel of Mark.

  294. The claim is that Jesus is alive.

  295. And what you need to recognize

  296. is that it's not a man making this claim.

  297. It's a messenger of God making this claim.

  298. In other words,

  299. this is God's announcement.

  300. This is God's announcement

  301. that the one who was crucified

  302. has been raised from the dead.

  303. He is alive.

  304. This is God's good news.

  305. This angel goes on to say to these women

  306. in verse 7,

  307. Galilee, if you're wondering,

  308. is the place where it all started

  309. for Jesus and His disciples.

  310. That's where His public ministry began.

  311. That's where He called His original disciples,

  312. where they came together

  313. and He started to teach and heal.

  314. And so what's going on here

  315. is after His death and resurrection,

  316. He is seeking to regather His disciples

  317. after He's been raised from the dead.

  318. I hope you noticed

  319. that the very first eyewitnesses

  320. to the empty tomb

  321. and those who are being commissioned

  322. by an angel

  323. to go declare that Jesus is alive

  324. are three women.

  325. That's risky for Mark.

  326. I'll come back to that in a second.

  327. But did you also notice

  328. that He singles out Peter

  329. in verse 7,

  330. but go tell His disciples

  331. and Peter

  332. that He's going before you to Galilee?

  333. I'll come back to that

  334. in another second.

  335. At the end of verse 7,

  336. we read,

  337. there you will see Him in Galilee

  338. just as He told you.

  339. Just as He told you.

  340. When did Jesus say that?

  341. If you've got your Bible,

  342. look at Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14:26

  343. verse 26.

  344. This is right after

  345. Jesus has totally

  346. kind of Jesus-ified

  347. the Passover meal.

  348. He says,

  349. now the Passover,

  350. do it in remembrance of me,

  351. which is phenomenal in itself.

  352. But after the institution

  353. of the Lord's Supper,

  354. Jesus in verse 26 says,

  355. and when they had sung a hymn,

  356. they went out to the Mount of Olives

  357. and Jesus said to them,

  358. you will all fall away,

  359. for it is written,

  360. I will strike the shepherd.

  361. That's a reference to His death.

  362. And the sheep will be scattered.

  363. 28,

  364. but after I'm raised up,

  365. I will go before you to Galilee.

  366. There it is.

  367. That's what this angel is referring to

  368. when He says,

  369. just as He told you.

  370. But it's more than that.

  371. Because if you flip in your Bible

  372. back to Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8:31

  373. verse 31,

  374. Jesus talking about Himself

  375. as the Son of Man,

  376. the Christ,

  377. He starts saying things like this.

  378. The Son of Man must be handed over.

  379. He must suffer and die

  380. and on the third day

  381. be raised from the dead.

  382. He says that in chapter 8,

  383. verse 31,

  384. and then chapter 9,

  385. verse 31,

  386. He says the same thing.

  387. The Son of Man must suffer,

  388. be handed over,

  389. die,

  390. and be raised on the third day.

  391. And if that's not enough,

  392. in Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  393. Jesus says,

  394. See,

  395. we are going up to Jerusalem

  396. and the Son of Man

  397. will be delivered over

  398. to the chief priests

  399. and the scribes

  400. and they will condemn Him to death

  401. and deliver Him over

  402. to the Gentiles

  403. and they will mock Him

  404. and spit on Him

  405. and flog Him

  406. and kill Him

  407. and after three days

  408. He will rise.

  409. Jesus

  410. predicted

  411. not just His own death,

  412. but His own resurrection

  413. three days later,

  414. which was all fulfillment

  415. of Old Testament prophecies

  416. of the Christ

  417. in Psalm 16

  418. and Isaiah 53

  419. that would talk about

  420. this Christ

  421. who gives Himself

  422. and comes back to life

  423. for His people.

  424. That's what happens

  425. in the tomb.

  426. And in verse 8,

  427. we see the scene

  428. of these women

  429. coming out of the tomb

  430. and what do you expect?

  431. You read these accounts

  432. in verses 5, 6, and 7

  433. and you're thinking,

  434. okay, this angel

  435. is commissioning

  436. these women to go.

  437. They're going to go

  438. tell the disciples.

  439. Right?

  440. Well, they definitely

  441. hightail it out of the tomb

  442. but in verse 8

  443. you see that this hightailing

  444. was a fleeing

  445. from the tomb.

  446. They were terrified.

  447. They wanted to get out

  448. of there.

  449. Trembling,

  450. astonishment,

  451. and fear

  452. completely shocked,

  453. disoriented,

  454. and terrified.

  455. And then they don't do

  456. what the angel

  457. tells them to do.

  458. They don't tell anybody.

  459. All throughout

  460. the Gospel of Mark

  461. there's this theme

  462. of the disoriented

  463. and unbelieving disciples

  464. including these three women.

  465. These three women

  466. respond to this news

  467. in fearful silence.

  468. And it's in stark contrast

  469. to the centurion

  470. in Mark 15, 39

  471. who upon seeing

  472. the crucified Jesus

  473. breathe his last,

  474. speak with faith-filled confession.

  475. truly,

  476. this was the Son of God.

  477. Why would Mark

  478. close a Gospel

  479. open-ended like this?

  480. Why would he leave us

  481. hanging like this?

  482. I mean,

  483. don't you want closure?

  484. Well, we know what happens

  485. to these women.

  486. We know the rest of the story.

  487. We know these

  488. from the other Gospels

  489. that these women

  490. come to their senses

  491. and they go tell the disciples

  492. and they go meet Jesus

  493. in Galilee

  494. and they see Jesus.

  495. We learn from the Apostle Paul

  496. that Jesus not only

  497. appeared to them

  498. but to 500 other

  499. of his disciples.

  500. And these women,

  501. these same women

  502. in the book of Acts

  503. are part of the early church

  504. that empowered

  505. by the Holy Spirit,

  506. they go and declare

  507. to all people

  508. that Jesus

  509. is the risen Christ

  510. who died

  511. on the cross

  512. for sinners.

  513. We know the rest

  514. of the story.

  515. But why?

  516. Why would Mark

  517. close like this?

  518. It's open-ended

  519. by design.

  520. It's to bring you

  521. into the tomb.

  522. It's for you

  523. to ask the question,

  524. how would I respond

  525. if I were in that tomb

  526. with that angel

  527. and know Jesus present?

  528. How would you respond

  529. to this extraordinary claim

  530. of this angel

  531. that he has risen?

  532. In verses 1-8,

  533. there's this extraordinary claim.

  534. That's where I'm at

  535. in your outline

  536. in the bulletin.

  537. The extraordinary claim

  538. is this.

  539. Jesus is alive.

  540. That's the claim.

  541. And not just

  542. that he's on,

  543. that he's alive,

  544. he's on the move.

  545. He's on his way

  546. to Galilee.

  547. Are you guys familiar

  548. with C.S. Lewis?

  549. C.S. Lewis wrote

  550. the Narnia series

  551. for children.

  552. The Lion, the Witch,

  553. and the Wardrobe

  554. was one of those books.

  555. And we learn

  556. in this novel

  557. of the great lion Aslan,

  558. the king of Narnia.

  559. And it comes to a head

  560. when this lion Aslan

  561. is slain on an ancient rock altar

  562. by the wicked

  563. and icy queen of the north.

  564. But soon after his death,

  565. this altar breaks in two

  566. and Aslan is raised

  567. from the dead

  568. and he's on the move.

  569. And he's on the move

  570. breathing life

  571. onto all of those

  572. who've been put under the curse

  573. by the queen.

  574. Thawing them.

  575. Thawing them to life.

  576. breathing back to life.

  577. All those under the curse.

  578. And gathering to himself

  579. a kingdom of beloved creatures

  580. brought back to life.

  581. C.S. Lewis was a Christian.

  582. And Aslan was a Christ type.

  583. And that beautiful scene

  584. in the Lion, the Witch,

  585. and the Wardrobe,

  586. he's making a claim

  587. that Jesus has been raised

  588. from the dead.

  589. C.S. Lewis also wrote another book.

  590. It's called Mere Christianity.

  591. I have a number of these copies.

  592. If you're interested,

  593. I would be glad to give you one.

  594. I'm going to read a section of this.

  595. Because Lewis was also

  596. a Christian apologist.

  597. Which means he sought to

  598. make a case for Jesus.

  599. Listen to this.

  600. I'm trying here to prevent

  601. anyone saying

  602. the really foolish thing

  603. that people have often said

  604. about him, Jesus.

  605. Quote,

  606. I'm writing to accept Jesus

  607. as a great moral teacher,

  608. but I don't accept

  609. his claim to be God.

  610. That is the one thing

  611. we must not say,

  612. says Lewis.

  613. A man who was

  614. merely a man

  615. and said the sort of things

  616. Jesus said

  617. would not be a great moral teacher.

  618. He would either be a lunatic

  619. on a level with the man

  620. who says he is a poached egg,

  621. or else he would be

  622. the devil of hell.

  623. You must make your choice.

  624. Either this man was

  625. and is the son of God,

  626. or else a madman

  627. or something worse.

  628. You can shut him up

  629. for a fool.

  630. You can spit at him

  631. and kill him as a demon,

  632. or you can fall at his feet

  633. and call him Lord and God,

  634. but let us not come

  635. with any patronizing nonsense

  636. about his being

  637. a great human teacher.

  638. He's not left that open to us.

  639. He did not intend to.

  640. If this extraordinary claim

  641. is true,

  642. that Jesus is the Christ

  643. raised from the dead,

  644. that he is alive

  645. and on the move today,

  646. it changes everything.

  647. He's breathing life

  648. on the dead under the curse.

  649. He's gathering for himself

  650. a new people

  651. under a new promise.

  652. He's gathering for himself

  653. people from every tongue,

  654. tribe, and nation

  655. into one people.

  656. It's called the church.

  657. You can fall at his feet.

  658. You can fall at his risen

  659. from the dead feet.

  660. This extraordinary claim

  661. is made in an extraordinary way

  662. that he's alive.

  663. We know the rest of the story

  664. of the Marys and Salome.

  665. They went to tell the disciples

  666. and they themselves

  667. saw the risen Jesus.

  668. These three women

  669. were the first eyewitnesses

  670. bearing testimony

  671. to the resurrected Jesus.

  672. But here's what you need

  673. to understand.

  674. In the first century,

  675. women did not have

  676. the same rights as men,

  677. especially when it comes

  678. to credible,

  679. credible testimony,

  680. believable testimony,

  681. whether that's in a court of law

  682. or somewhere else.

  683. The question becomes,

  684. why would Mark

  685. risk the credibility

  686. of the claim of his gospel

  687. that Jesus is alive,

  688. that Jesus is the Christ?

  689. Why would he risk that

  690. by including this account

  691. of these three women?

  692. Because it's true.

  693. It really happened.

  694. So confident

  695. was Mark

  696. of the reality

  697. of this account

  698. that he has nothing to hide.

  699. And in fact,

  700. it strengthens

  701. the witness.

  702. Do you know

  703. what a linchpin is?

  704. I've got a picture

  705. of a linchpin for you.

  706. A linchpin is,

  707. you see that spike

  708. going through the axle

  709. of that wagon wheel?

  710. A linchpin keeps a wheel

  711. on the axle of a wagon.

  712. You pull out that linchpin

  713. and the wheels fall off.

  714. The resurrection of Jesus Christ

  715. is the linchpin

  716. of Christianity.

  717. It keeps the wheels

  718. on Christianity.

  719. It is the definitive

  720. validating claim

  721. that Jesus

  722. is in fact

  723. the Christ

  724. who came

  725. to die

  726. for sinners

  727. to bring them

  728. into a life-giving

  729. relationship

  730. with the one true God.

  731. If Jesus

  732. was not raised

  733. from the dead,

  734. he is not

  735. the Christ

  736. and there is

  737. no salvation

  738. in him,

  739. you are still

  740. in your sins.

  741. But if he was

  742. raised from the dead,

  743. he is

  744. the Christ.

  745. Totally God,

  746. totally man,

  747. sent to die

  748. as a ransom

  749. so that you

  750. could live forever

  751. in a right

  752. relationship

  753. with God.

  754. that's good news.

  755. The resurrection

  756. is why I personally

  757. am a Christian,

  758. humanly speaking.

  759. I reached a point

  760. where I could not

  761. explain

  762. the resurrection

  763. of Jesus

  764. in any other way

  765. than that it

  766. actually happened.

  767. It demonstrates,

  768. it sheds light

  769. on the rest

  770. of the claims

  771. of Jesus

  772. about himself

  773. and what he's done.

  774. The question is,

  775. how will you respond?

  776. The simple question

  777. I'm asking you

  778. to answer

  779. this morning is,

  780. is it true?

  781. Did the resurrection

  782. happen?

  783. Is Jesus

  784. alive?

  785. Totally God,

  786. totally man?

  787. Let's say

  788. you're a genuine

  789. follower of Jesus Christ.

  790. Christ.

  791. You believe Jesus

  792. is totally God,

  793. totally man.

  794. You believe he's

  795. the king,

  796. the Christ,

  797. the son of man

  798. who died

  799. in your place

  800. to give you

  801. a place

  802. among God's people.

  803. When you hear

  804. of the resurrection

  805. of Jesus,

  806. that he's alive,

  807. you should be assured

  808. because your faith

  809. does not rest

  810. on thin ice,

  811. brother,

  812. sister.

  813. Your faith

  814. rests on

  815. the historic

  816. granite

  817. granite

  818. of the real

  819. bodily

  820. resurrection

  821. of Jesus

  822. the Christ.

  823. You've not

  824. made a mistake.

  825. Let that assurance

  826. turn to perseverance.

  827. Press on.

  828. If you're a

  829. 21st century

  830. follower of

  831. the risen Jesus,

  832. you love him.

  833. And because you love him,

  834. you're going to

  835. constantly be

  836. learning from him

  837. so that you

  838. constantly be

  839. living for him.

  840. Press on.

  841. He's alive.

  842. But there's

  843. one more piece

  844. of this.

  845. If you're a genuine

  846. follower of Jesus,

  847. it's called hope.

  848. Your risen king

  849. has defeated

  850. death

  851. for you.

  852. You will see him.

  853. Not in Galilee,

  854. in glory.

  855. And you're one

  856. day closer.

  857. Jesus is alive.

  858. Now let's say

  859. you're a nominal

  860. Christian.

  861. A nominal

  862. Christian is a

  863. by name

  864. only

  865. Christian.

  866. There's two

  867. things you should

  868. be aware of.

  869. You remember

  870. Scott's testimony

  871. like Scott

  872. who before he

  873. was converted

  874. to Christ,

  875. he thought he was

  876. a Christian

  877. by virtue of

  878. those who

  879. are around him.

  880. Cultural

  881. Christianity

  882. is a claiming

  883. to be a Christian

  884. by virtue

  885. of your surroundings.

  886. A genuine

  887. Christian is a

  888. follower of Jesus

  889. by virtue of a

  890. changed heart

  891. and a changed

  892. allegiance.

  893. A genuine

  894. Christian dies

  895. to themselves

  896. daily

  897. in order to

  898. learn from

  899. and live for

  900. Jesus daily

  901. because we love

  902. him.

  903. are you a

  904. nominal

  905. Christian?

  906. Jesus is

  907. alive.

  908. And he's

  909. calling you

  910. today,

  911. come,

  912. die,

  913. live for

  914. me.

  915. But there's

  916. another aspect

  917. of this

  918. nominal

  919. Christianity

  920. that I want

  921. to raise

  922. to your

  923. attention.

  924. Do you

  925. remember

  926. how the

  927. angel in

  928. the tomb

  929. singled out

  930. Peter?

  931. It's in

  932. verse 7.

  933. He said,

  934. but go tell

  935. his disciples

  936. and Peter,

  937. why does

  938. the angel

  939. single Peter

  940. out?

  941. Because Peter,

  942. at the worst

  943. possible time,

  944. denied Jesus

  945. three times.

  946. All leading up

  947. to Jesus'

  948. crucifixion.

  949. Could you

  950. imagine the

  951. shame?

  952. Could you

  953. imagine the

  954. guilt?

  955. The despair?

  956. The despair?

  957. Peter?

  958. Maybe at

  959. one point,

  960. you started

  961. following Jesus

  962. and then

  963. something

  964. happened.

  965. And now

  966. you're thinking,

  967. there's no way

  968. that Jesus

  969. would take

  970. you back.

  971. Well,

  972. if Jesus

  973. was able

  974. to forgive

  975. Peter

  976. for his

  977. thrice

  978. denial,

  979. and not

  980. just forgive

  981. him,

  982. but make

  983. him the

  984. leader of

  985. his

  986. church,

  987. all by

  988. his grace.

  989. If he's

  990. able to do

  991. that with a

  992. hothead like

  993. Peter,

  994. who denied

  995. him three

  996. times,

  997. he is able

  998. and willing

  999. to do the

  1000. same for

  1001. you.

  1002. You are

  1003. invited

  1004. by the

  1005. risen

  1006. Jesus

  1007. to come

  1008. and follow

  1009. him.

  1010. In fact,

  1011. I want to

  1012. invite you

  1013. to come

  1014. follow Jesus

  1015. with us.

  1016. Christ the

  1017. King Church

  1018. is not a

  1019. building,

  1020. we're a

  1021. people.

  1022. And we've

  1023. been rescued

  1024. by the

  1025. risen Jesus

  1026. and now

  1027. it's our

  1028. joy to

  1029. learn from

  1030. him in

  1031. order to

  1032. live for

  1033. him.

  1034. And come,

  1035. come back

  1036. next week.

  1037. Come join

  1038. a life

  1039. group.

  1040. Come join

  1041. the pack

  1042. as we

  1043. follow Jesus

  1044. together.

  1045. We love

  1046. him.

  1047. You're

  1048. invited to

  1049. join us.

  1050. Finally,

  1051. let's say

  1052. you don't

  1053. claim to

  1054. be a

  1055. Christian.

  1056. You never

  1057. have.

  1058. Maybe you're

  1059. learning about

  1060. Jesus for the

  1061. very first

  1062. time.

  1063. Maybe this

  1064. is the

  1065. first time

  1066. you ever

  1067. heard someone

  1068. proclaim from

  1069. the Bible

  1070. what the

  1071. Bible claims

  1072. about Jesus.

  1073. Now,

  1074. believe me,

  1075. nobody likes

  1076. to be strong

  1077. armed into

  1078. anything,

  1079. myself included,

  1080. especially when

  1081. it comes to

  1082. matters of

  1083. faith.

  1084. But let me

  1085. encourage you

  1086. to gather

  1087. your information

  1088. about Jesus.

  1089. Would you

  1090. consider seeking

  1091. Jesus, the

  1092. true Jesus,

  1093. by reading the

  1094. gospel of Mark

  1095. on your own?

  1096. Better yet,

  1097. would you

  1098. consider reading

  1099. the gospel of

  1100. Mark with

  1101. another Christian?

  1102. God's

  1103. name?

  1104. My neighbor

  1105. just finished

  1106. reading through

  1107. the gospel of

  1108. Matthew,

  1109. and we have

  1110. been regularly

  1111. trading texts

  1112. on his

  1113. observations and

  1114. questions as

  1115. he's been

  1116. working through

  1117. that gospel.

  1118. It's been

  1119. great.

  1120. If you want

  1121. to sit down

  1122. with another

  1123. Christian to

  1124. read through

  1125. the gospel of

  1126. Mark or

  1127. Matthew or

  1128. John or

  1129. Luke,

  1130. on your

  1131. connect card,

  1132. there is a

  1133. little box to

  1134. check.

  1135. I would like

  1136. to learn more

  1137. about Jesus.

  1138. Just check that

  1139. box, put it

  1140. into one of the

  1141. baskets that a

  1142. connect team member

  1143. is going to have

  1144. on your way out,

  1145. and we'll set it

  1146. up for you.

  1147. Gather your

  1148. information.

  1149. How are you

  1150. going to respond

  1151. to this

  1152. extraordinary claim

  1153. of this angel

  1154. that Jesus has

  1155. risen?

  1156. He's alive.

  1157. Let me wrap

  1158. this up by saying

  1159. the basic

  1160. question I put

  1161. before you this

  1162. morning is what

  1163. Mark 16 puts

  1164. before us.

  1165. Did the

  1166. resurrection of

  1167. Jesus of

  1168. Nazareth actually

  1169. happen?

  1170. Is it fake news

  1171. or good news?

  1172. And I've been

  1173. making my case

  1174. based on Mark

  1175. 16, 1-8,

  1176. that Jesus is

  1177. alive and it's

  1178. the best news

  1179. anyone could

  1180. hear.

  1181. It's the

  1182. linchpin of

  1183. this claim that

  1184. Jesus is the

  1185. Christ, the

  1186. King who came

  1187. and died and

  1188. was raised to

  1189. bring people

  1190. back into a

  1191. life-giving

  1192. relationship with

  1193. God.

  1194. Jesus is

  1195. totally God,
