  1. Well, I have the joy of drawing pictures for you this morning.

  2. And so if Robin, if you could pull that up, I just want to remind you, we are in this

  3. series called Revision, and what the elders of Christ the King Church are seeking to do

  4. is the elders are seeking to shepherd our church towards a much more clear aim, why

  5. we exist as a church.

  6. And last week, we talked about conviction number one.

  7. There's this little booklet that we're working through together.

  8. It's from a book called The Vine Project, phase one, sharpening your convictions.

  9. And last week, I drew a picture for you about conviction number one.

  10. Why make disciples?

  11. And so it went something like this.

  12. Remember that our God is a triune God that came right out of Ephesians chapter 1, verses

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  13. 3 through 14.

  14. God the Father who ordains salvation, God the Son who accomplishes salvation, and God the

  15. Holy Spirit who applies salvation, who is our seal, our guarantor of what Jesus has done

  16. on our behalf.

  17. So God's plan is a triune plan.

  18. And then I wanted you to see that God's plan is a big plan.

  19. It's a plan for the fullness of time.

  20. God is moving all people over all time towards a designated end that we are representing by a

  21. big old throne, as in the throne of judgment, as in Matthew 25, where all people will gather

  22. before King Jesus, and he will separate all people from all time as his sheep from the

  23. goats.

  24. So God is moving all people from all time in this great big plan of his.

  25. In fact, what I wanted you to see last week is that God is working out this plan right now.

  26. In between I told you of this plan last week and this week, God for sure has been at work

  27. all throughout the world.

  28. I also wanted you to see that this plan was a Christocentric plan, that specifically the

  29. cross of Jesus Christ is at the center of this plan.

  30. Remember that this plan for the fullness of time, God intended to unite all things in

  31. Christ, things in heaven and things on earth.

  32. It's through the cross of Jesus Christ that God pours out an extraordinary grace, a grace

  33. that changes people dramatically.

  34. It changes the direction they live.

  35. So at the cross of Jesus Christ, God does something amazing through the death of Christ.

  36. That payment Jesus made, that act of redemption, he called it a ransom for many.

  37. So this plan is a triune plan.

  38. It's a big plan.

  39. It's a Christocentric plan, by the way.

  40. We also know that Jesus is the creator and that Jesus is the judge.

  41. And so he's the creator, redeemer, and judge.

  42. But we also know that this plan is a people-moving plan, that God for the fullness of time is moving

  43. people to the cross.

  44. Right now there are millions of people living in, that's an O, in the domain of darkness.

  45. And they are running away from the throne.

  46. They're not interested in following Jesus.

  47. They're not interested in bringing glory and praise and honor to our God.

  48. I was numbered among them and so were you.

  49. We were living self-centered lives for this present age.

  50. We were thinking that we had all right to determine our own lives.

  51. We were living by the rule of self-determination.

  52. And then this phenomenal act of grace, God intersects our lives.

  53. He gives us ears to hear of what Jesus has done at the cross 2,000 years later.

  54. And so what God does in glorious fashion, through the grace of God, he calls us to the cross.

  55. And then it's by this amazing grace poured out in an extraordinary way at the cross.

  56. He flips us.

  57. He transforms us from living in the domain of darkness, self-centered, self-determined lives.

  58. And he makes us new people.

  59. And now we are living for him.

  60. We are moving towards Jesus.

  61. He's called us to be his disciples.

  62. This extraordinary grace poured out at the cross results in a radical discipleship to Jesus.

  63. And this is, of course, a glory plan.

  64. When God radically changes us by his grace, now we're living for something far bigger than ourselves.

  65. We're living for what we originally created for.

  66. The glory of God.

  67. And so we, so what God is doing for all time, is he is populating heaven with worshipers.

  68. People who are around the throne right now singing the praises of God.

  69. Salvation belongs to our God.

  70. Who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb.

  71. Praise and glory, honor and strength be to our God.

  72. That's conviction one.

  73. We've got, we've got to be convinced of this.

  74. If we're not convinced of God's plan for the fullness of time, do you know what's going to happen?

  75. We're going to be convinced of some other plan.

  76. Some other plan is going to take his place.

  77. We're going to be living for something else.

  78. But this is conviction one.

  79. God is at work, brothers and sisters.

  80. All throughout this week, all throughout the world, God from every tribe, tongue, and nation

  81. has been flipping people by his grace through the cross of Jesus, making them disciples of Jesus.

  82. That's the intro.

  83. Conviction two.

  84. What, what is a disciple?

  85. What is a disciple of Jesus Christ?

  86. It's a very basic question, right?

  87. And we can't assume that everyone in this room is sharing the same answer to that question.

  88. Because some people think that a disciple of Jesus Christ is like someone who accepted Jesus into their heart when they were three years old,

  89. but it's not living a life of discipleship to Jesus.

  90. Or we can think that to be a disciple is to be in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with an older Christian.

  91. We think of discipleship in terms of programs.

  92. Or we can think that discipleship, a disciple of Jesus is one of the elite followers of Jesus.

  93. Those elite people who go into full-time ministry.

  94. They're kind of the real deal, the SEAL Team 6 of followers of Jesus.

  95. We need to turn to Jesus.

  96. Jesus, what do you say a disciple is?

  97. How does Jesus answer the question, what is a disciple?

  98. And so this morning, we're going to turn to Mark chapter 8, and we're going to look at 27 through 38,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  99. and we're going to look at this kind of nice section of God's Word to look to Jesus and to learn from Him what a true disciple is from His lips.

  100. So here's what this is going to do for us.

  101. First, it's going to give us as a church a shared definition and description of what a disciple of Jesus really is.

  102. So we, at one point, as a church, we can say, okay, we're all on the same page of what a disciple is now.

  103. Secondly, what that will do is help each of us assess our lives in light of what Jesus says a disciple is.

  104. So all of us this morning need to ask a very basic question.

  105. When we hear what Jesus says is a disciple, each of us needs to ask, am I that kind of disciple?

  106. Have I responded to that call?

  107. That, all of that call?

  108. Thirdly, what this will do is it's going to help us move forward as a church.

  109. Because think of your life groups as packs of 21st disciples, century disciples following Jesus together.

  110. And so when we have a common definition of what a disciple is, now we can help each other move towards Jesus together.

  111. And finally, this is going to help us know how to call people who are outside of the church, living in darkness right now,

  112. what we must say to them so that they too can become followers of Jesus.

  113. So if you would, please, if you haven't already, open your Bibles to Mark chapter 8, verses 27 through 38.

    Mark 8:27–38

  114. I'm going to read this for us.

  115. Hear God's word.

  116. This is the very words of God.

  117. And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi.

  118. And on the way, he asked his disciples, who do people say that I am?

  119. And they told him, John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, and others, one of the prophets.

  120. And Jesus asked his disciples, but who do you say, who do you say that I am?

  121. Peter answered him, you are the Christ.

  122. And Jesus strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

  123. That's interesting.

  124. Verse 31, and he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  125. and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and the scribes and be killed.

  126. And after three days, rise again.

  127. And he said this plainly.

  128. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

  129. But turning and seeing his disciples, Jesus rebuked Peter and said,

  130. Get behind me, Satan, for you're not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.

  131. And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, Jesus said to them,

  132. If anyone would come after me, here it is, he is now defining what a disciple is.

  133. If anyone would come after me.

  134. He, he, for if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  135. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  136. But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospels will save it.

  137. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

  138. For what can a man give in return for his soul?

  139. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation,

  140. of him will the son of man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his father and with the holy angels.

  141. May God bless the speaking and hearing of his words.

  142. This morning I want to walk you through kind of four steps, four points.

  143. You'll see it on your bulletin.

  144. Now I know the font on the back of your bulletin is really small.

  145. If you just want to listen and follow along, that's fine.

  146. But I'm going to make four moves so that we can answer the question.

  147. So we can hear Jesus answer the question,

  148. What is a disciple?

  149. First, we see in this passage a Q&A with Jesus.

  150. A question and answer time with Jesus.

  151. Verses 27 through 30.

  152. Jesus has brought his disciples to Caesarea Philippi.

  153. They've been working together for some time.

  154. His disciples have been seeing Jesus do amazing things.

  155. And you've got to know that Caesarea Philippi,

  156. This is like worship center.

  157. There was the worship of Baal that took place in Caesarea Philippi.

  158. The worship of Pan.

  159. The worship of Caesar.

  160. It was the Roman cult city.

  161. So it's very interesting that Jesus would turn to his disciples and say,

  162. In this town of worship,

  163. Who are people saying that I am?

  164. He's asking his disciples what other people think.

  165. It's like he's taking a poll.

  166. And his disciples respond in verse 28,

  167. Well, some people think that you're John the Baptist.

  168. Other people are saying that you're Elijah.

  169. Some others are saying you're one of the other prophets.

  170. These are the heavy hitters leading up to Jesus so far.

  171. And then Jesus gets to where he wants to get to.

  172. In verse 29, he asks his disciples,

  173. Who do you say that I am?

  174. Before we go any further,

  175. Imagine that you're in Caesarea Philippi,

  176. And that Jesus is asking you that question.

  177. Who do you say that Jesus is?

  178. When we talk about discipleship to Jesus,

  179. We must begin with Jesus.

  180. Who do you say that Jesus is?

  181. In verse 29, Peter says,

  182. You're the Christ!

  183. Ding, ding, ding, ding!

  184. He's almost right.

  185. Because Jesus, look how he answers,

  186. And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

  187. That's kind of surprising.

  188. So, if Peter were right,

  189. Jesus is the Christ,

  190. Wouldn't Jesus want him to declare that to everybody?

  191. Why is Jesus putting the hush on his disciples

  192. After they've said something apparently true?

  193. That he's the Christ?

  194. Well, what we're going to see is that

  195. Jesus knows that Peter and the disciples,

  196. They don't have a full understanding

  197. Of what the Christ has come to do.

  198. And so, that brings me to the second point.

  199. An important messianic clarification.

  200. Jesus, in verse 31,

  201. Is seeking to correct his disciples

  202. In a misunderstanding of the Christ.

  203. You've got to be clear on who Jesus the Christ is

  204. In order to know how to respond to him.

  205. And so, here's what I want you to see right now.

  206. In verse 29, Peter says,

  207. You are the Christ.

  208. And then in verse 31,

  209. Mark summarizes what Jesus says.

  210. He says,

  211. And he began to teach them

  212. That the Son of Man must suffer

  213. And he must be rejected and be killed

  214. And three days rise again.

  215. And so, what Jesus is doing

  216. Is he's using a title,

  217. Son of Man,

  218. That equals the title Christ.

  219. It's just two different ways of saying

  220. The Messiah.

  221. And so, if you look in your Bible

  222. In Mark chapter 9,

    Mark 9:31

  223. Verse 31,

  224. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man.

  225. The Son of Man is going to be delivered

  226. Into the hands of men

  227. And they will kill him

  228. And when he's killed,

  229. After three days, he will rise.

  230. And then if you flip the page,

  231. Chapter 10, verse 33,

  232. Jesus says,

  233. See, we are going up to Jerusalem

  234. And the Son of Man

  235. Will be delivered over to the chief priests

  236. And the scribes

  237. And they will condemn him to death

  238. And deliver him over to the Gentiles

  239. And they will mock him

  240. And spit on him

  241. And flog him

  242. And kill him

  243. And after three days,

  244. He will rise.

  245. Jesus is making a clarification

  246. On the Christ,

  247. The Son of Man.

  248. If you flip back on your Bibles,

  249. To Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  250. If you kind of flip to the middle of your Bible

  251. And you're in the Psalm,

  252. Just start going right.

  253. Go past Jeremiah and Ezekiel

  254. And you will find Daniel.

  255. Daniel chapter 7,

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  256. Daniel has these night visions.

  257. And in verse 13 and 14,

  258. We read this.

  259. I saw in the night visions

  260. And behold,

  261. With the clouds of heaven

  262. There came one like a

  263. Son of Man.

  264. And he came to the Ancient of Days

  265. And was presented before him

  266. And to him,

  267. The Son of Man

  268. Was given dominion and glory

  269. And a kingdom

  270. That all people's nations

  271. And languages

  272. Should serve him.

  273. His dominion is not

  274. An everlasting dominion

  275. Which shall not pass away

  276. And his kingdom

  277. One that shall not be destroyed.

  278. So when Peter's thinking

  279. About the Christ,

  280. He's thinking,

  281. Uh-huh,

  282. Here comes the dominion, baby.

  283. The Christ is coming

  284. To knock out Rome.

  285. We're going to get our nation back.

  286. And Jesus is saying,

  287. The Christ didn't come

  288. To establish his kingdom

  289. That way.

  290. Not by force,

  291. Not by war horse.

  292. Jesus is saying,

  293. I have come,

  294. The Christ has come,

  295. The Son of Man has come

  296. To establish his kingdom

  297. Through suffering,

  298. Rejection,

  299. Being killed,

  300. And being raised from the dead.

  301. Here's why this is significant.

  302. Robin,

  303. Would you pull up

  304. The,

  305. That masterpiece of art?

  306. Remember,

  307. The cross

  308. Is at the center of it all.

  309. The cross

  310. Is the thing

  311. By which God

  312. Poured out his grace

  313. To accomplish

  314. His unifying purposes.

  315. The Christ,

  316. Did you see that word must?

  317. The Christ must suffer

  318. In order to fulfill

  319. God's big plan

  320. For all time.

  321. To establish his kingdom

  322. In his everlasting dominion.

  323. It had to happen this way.

  324. You see,

  325. The cross

  326. Is central

  327. To God's plan

  328. Of making disciples

  329. Of all nations.

  330. It must happen.

  331. It's a very important

  332. Messianic clarification.

  333. It's at the cross

  334. That God's power

  335. Is poured out.

  336. And it's that

  337. Gracious power

  338. That delivers

  339. A sinner

  340. Living in the domain

  341. Of darkness

  342. And transfers

  343. And transforms

  344. That sinner

  345. Into a saint

  346. A child of God

  347. Living in

  348. The kingdom of light.

  349. What's interesting

  350. Is in verse 32

  351. Peter rebukes Jesus.

  352. Jesus,

  353. You don't want

  354. To be talking like that.

  355. You got a crowd here,

  356. Jesus.

  357. Don't miss it.

  358. You don't really mean that,

  359. Do you, Jesus?

  360. Jesus.

  361. You're not going

  362. To be crucified.

  363. You're not going

  364. To be killed.

  365. And then Jesus

  366. Rebukes Peter.

  367. He says,

  368. Get behind me, Satan.

  369. Satan's the deceiver.

  370. The distorter.

  371. And he says,

  372. Peter,

  373. You don't have

  374. The things of God

  375. On your mind.

  376. You've got the things

  377. Of man.

  378. You know what

  379. Peter was doing?

  380. Peter

  381. Was wanting to be,

  382. Wanting Jesus to be

  383. The Christ

  384. Of his own liking.

  385. He wanted

  386. The Christ

  387. To be

  388. To be the deliverer

  389. Of his preference.

  390. This is what we need

  391. Right now.

  392. And Jesus is saying,

  393. No, no.

  394. The Christ

  395. Has come

  396. To establish

  397. His kingdom

  398. By forgiving people.

  399. By transforming people.

  400. By a powerful work

  401. Of his grace.

  402. By a powerful work

  403. By a powerful work

  404. By a powerful work

  405. By a powerful work

  406. By a powerful work

  407. By a powerful work

  408. By a powerful work

  409. It's a very important

  410. Messianic clarification.

  411. And by the way,

  412. Jesus doesn't reject

  413. What we read in Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  414. Chapter 7

  415. 13 through 14.

  416. That shows up

  417. In verse 38.

  418. When Jesus comes back

  419. In glory.

  420. We've seen a Q&A

  421. With Jesus.

  422. We've seen this important

  423. Messianic clarification.

  424. Discipleship to Jesus

  425. Must begin with the real Jesus.

  426. The real Jesus.

  427. Not the Christ

  428. Of our own liking

  429. Or our own likeness.

  430. And it's from there

  431. That he makes the call.

  432. If you look at verse

  433. Back in Mark chapter 8

    Mark 8:34

  434. Verse 34

  435. He's just rebuked

  436. Peter

  437. And calling the crowd

  438. To him

  439. With his disciples

  440. He said to them

  441. This is where

  442. He answers the question

  443. What is a disciple?

  444. And this call

  445. In verse 34

  446. Contains three commands

  447. Deny himself

  448. Take up his cross

  449. Follow me

  450. They're commands

  451. They're requirements

  452. And so Jesus says

  453. In verse 34

  454. The invitation goes

  455. Out to all

  456. If anyone would come

  457. After me

  458. Let him

  459. Better said

  460. He must

  461. Deny himself

  462. And take up his cross

  463. And follow me

  464. We've got to be clear

  465. On what Jesus

  466. Is saying right here

  467. We all got to get

  468. On the same page

  469. Of what Jesus means

  470. By a disciple

  471. So let me give this a shot

  472. Let's take those two commands

  473. Of this call first

  474. Let him deny himself

  475. And take up

  476. Take up his cross

  477. When Jesus says

  478. He must deny himself

  479. What Jesus is talking about

  480. Is giving up

  481. Renouncing

  482. A self-centered

  483. Way of life

  484. That lives for this

  485. Present world

  486. That's what he's talking about

  487. He's talking about

  488. You need

  489. To renounce

  490. Deny

  491. A life

  492. In which you

  493. Every morning

  494. Those living in the domain

  495. Of darkness

  496. They pull up this flag

  497. Of self

  498. And that flag of self

  499. Doesn't have like

  500. Your picture on it

  501. It has things like

  502. Living for accomplishment

  503. Where

  504. Every morning

  505. Your

  506. People get into this

  507. Thinking that

  508. I'm living for

  509. Some kind of award

  510. Or acknowledgement today

  511. I'm living for a GPA

  512. I'm living for a degree

  513. I'm living for a promotion

  514. I'm living to be right

  515. And what it is

  516. Is some kind of living

  517. Actually for yourself

  518. And the lie is

  519. That this present world

  520. Is all that there is

  521. Jesus says

  522. You need to deny yourself

  523. You've got to deny

  524. That

  525. And Jesus goes on to say

  526. Not only do you

  527. Have to deny yourself

  528. You need to take up

  529. Your cross

  530. Jesus is speaking this

  531. In Caesarea Philippi

  532. Everybody who heard

  533. Jesus say this

  534. Would know

  535. Exactly

  536. They would have

  537. A picture in their mind

  538. Of someone

  539. Who's been convicted

  540. By Rome

  541. To death

  542. And after their conviction

  543. They would need to

  544. Walk

  545. The walk of shame

  546. To the place

  547. Of their crucifixion

  548. And do you know

  549. What they'd have to be carrying

  550. Their own cross

  551. Rome has come in

  552. And said

  553. And said

  554. You do not have

  555. Any more rights

  556. To self-determination

  557. We will determine

  558. That for you

  559. If denying yourself

  560. Is renouncing

  561. A self-centered

  562. Living of your life

  563. For this present world

  564. This call to die

  565. This call to

  566. Take up your cross

  567. Is laying down

  568. Your right

  569. To self-determination

  570. I call my own shots

  571. I decide where I go

  572. Jesus is not pulling

  573. Any punches here

  574. And be clear

  575. That these are not

  576. Suggestions

  577. What he's doing

  578. Is this call

  579. To deny yourself

  580. This call

  581. To take up your cross

  582. It is a call

  583. To lay down

  584. Your life

  585. For Jesus

  586. And it is

  587. Essential

  588. To following Jesus

  589. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  590. Who wrote the book

  591. Cost of Discipleship

  592. Which everybody

  593. In the room

  594. Should have

  595. He is known

  596. For saying

  597. When Christ calls

  598. A man

  599. He calls him

  600. He bids him

  601. Come and die

  602. I want

  603. I want to help you

  604. Ask a question

  605. Right now

  606. And you might be

  607. A little embarrassed

  608. To ask it yourself

  609. So I'll ask it

  610. For you

  611. But let me give you

  612. A little kind of

  613. Humorous kind of

  614. Account of it first

  615. This particular question

  616. Back in 1992

  617. Yours truly

  618. Was a 20 year old

  619. Guy

  620. I literally

  621. My frontal lobe

  622. Hadn't been developed

  623. Yet

  624. So I literally

  625. Thought in six

  626. Hour increments

  627. I'm just thinking

  628. Six hours out

  629. Well summer of 1992

  630. I'm in New Jersey

  631. With a bunch of

  632. Other young Christians

  633. We're seeking to

  634. Follow Jesus together

  635. It

  636. The summer

  637. Rocked

  638. And I'm living

  639. In six hour increments

  640. And so this is

  641. This is early August

  642. Summer of 92

  643. My friend Andy

  644. And I

  645. Loving the Lord

  646. We get in our minds

  647. Let's get Mohawks

  648. And I'm not talking

  649. Fowhawk

  650. I'm talking

  651. Mohawk

  652. So we asked another

  653. Buddy of ours

  654. Hey man

  655. Will you

  656. Will you

  657. Mohawk us

  658. And I came out

  659. With a great

  660. Mohawk

  661. It was awesome

  662. I called my mom

  663. Mom I

  664. I got a Mohawk

  665. And then she says

  666. Something to the extent

  667. Who do you think you are?

  668. Because

  669. My brother

  670. Had asked me

  671. To be his best man

  672. At his wedding

  673. On Labor Day weekend

  674. That September

  675. Six hour

  676. My frontal lobe

  677. Had not been developed

  678. I had no

  679. Who do you think you are?

  680. I wasn't even thinking

  681. I

  682. I

  683. Don't know

  684. That question though

  685. Who do you think you are?

  686. That's the question

  687. I want you to ask

  688. Of Jesus

  689. Because when he says

  690. If anyone would come

  691. After me

  692. And he's talking to you

  693. He must deny himself

  694. And take up his cross

  695. You need to ask

  696. The question

  697. Who do you think

  698. You are?

  699. Jesus

  700. Who do you think

  701. You are

  702. To require that

  703. Of me

  704. To renounce

  705. A self-centered

  706. Self-determined life

  707. Who do you think

  708. You are?

  709. And the answer

  710. To that question

  711. He's the son of man

  712. He's your redeemer

  713. He's your creator

  714. He's your judge

  715. He has every right

  716. In the universe

  717. To call you

  718. To deny yourself

  719. And take up your cross

  720. And follow him

  721. Here's how much

  722. Your savior

  723. Loves you

  724. He will not

  725. Suffer

  726. Any

  727. Rival

  728. In your heart

  729. For him

  730. In his rightful place

  731. You won't suffer it

  732. And so he's saying

  733. If you're going to follow me

  734. If you're going to call me

  735. Master

  736. You've got to renounce

  737. All other masters

  738. And you're

  739. You're

  740. You're your biggest challenge

  741. What Jesus is talking about here

  742. In this

  743. Deny himself

  744. And take up your cross

  745. We can call this

  746. Repentance

  747. It's turning from

  748. Your old way of living

  749. In order to

  750. Turn

  751. To Jesus

  752. It's saying no

  753. To your former way of life

  754. Living in darkness

  755. Living for what

  756. People living in darkness

  757. Live for

  758. And you renounce that

  759. I

  760. I'm not living that way anymore

  761. Because I'm living for Jesus now

  762. We can sum this up in

  763. Jesus saying

  764. Lay down your life

  765. If you're going to come after me

  766. You must

  767. Lay down your life

  768. And for those of us

  769. This begins

  770. At conversion

  771. When we hear the gospel

  772. For the first time

  773. God's grace

  774. Lights us up

  775. We realize

  776. Who Jesus is

  777. What he has done

  778. And we're like

  779. Yes

  780. I will follow you

  781. You lay down your life

  782. You have no rights

  783. It's a response

  784. To his extraordinary grace

  785. And then for every day

  786. After that

  787. You're laying down your life

  788. This

  789. Is the way

  790. Of following Jesus

  791. That last command

  792. And follow me

  793. He must

  794. Deny himself

  795. Take up his cross

  796. And follow me

  797. I

  798. We tend

  799. As Christians

  800. To want to

  801. Just say

  802. Follow me

  803. Jesus is calling you

  804. To follow me

  805. And we leave out

  806. The deny part

  807. And to take up

  808. Your cross part

  809. We can't do that

  810. Jesus doesn't do that

  811. That's not loving people

  812. But

  813. In order to follow Jesus

  814. You must

  815. First

  816. Lay down your life

  817. But when we get to

  818. This command

  819. Follow me

  820. It's easy

  821. To keep it vague

  822. Jesus says

  823. Follow me

  824. I'll follow you

  825. Whatever you say

  826. Jesus I'll do it

  827. Most of the time

  828. I want to help you

  829. Think through

  830. A little bit more

  831. About what Jesus

  832. Means by follow me

  833. First thing is

  834. To follow Jesus

  835. Means to learn

  836. From Jesus

  837. To

  838. To listen

  839. To his words

  840. And to look

  841. At his way of life

  842. Back

  843. In the first century

  844. When disciples

  845. Followed their rabbis

  846. Disciples

  847. Disciples would

  848. Follow their rabbis

  849. Not simply just

  850. To hear the truth

  851. Of their words

  852. Disciples

  853. Followed rabbis

  854. To see how the rabbis

  855. Lived out

  856. The truth

  857. Of their words

  858. When Jesus says

  859. Follow me

  860. He's calling you

  861. To a whole new

  862. Way of life

  863. The best place

  864. To see

  865. Jesus

  866. To hear his words

  867. To see his way

  868. Of life

  869. In your Bible

  870. Are the gospels

  871. Gospel after gospel

  872. You hear

  873. The words

  874. Of Jesus

  875. You see

  876. The way he

  877. Engaged with people

  878. That's your savior

  879. That's your master

  880. That's the one

  881. Who's calling you

  882. To follow him

  883. That's who you're

  884. Learning from

  885. To follow Jesus

  886. Means first and foremost

  887. To learn

  888. From Jesus

  889. But

  890. To follow Jesus

  891. Doesn't end

  892. With learning

  893. From Jesus

  894. As though

  895. Discipleship's

  896. Just a classroom

  897. We learn

  898. From Jesus

  899. In order to

  900. Live for Jesus

  901. We learn

  902. From Jesus

  903. To live

  904. For Jesus

  905. In Matthew 11

  906. Jesus says

  907. Come to me

  908. All you who are

  909. We are in heaven

  910. Layden

  911. I will give you rest

  912. He says

  913. Verse 29

  914. Take my yoke

  915. Upon you

  916. And learn from me

  917. For I am

  918. Meek and lowly

  919. Of heart

  920. That yoke

  921. Is a great picture

  922. Of discipleship

  923. We are to be

  924. Yoked

  925. To Jesus

  926. To learn from him

  927. To walk

  928. With him

  929. In his ways

  930. We live

  931. For Jesus

  932. We don't learn

  933. From Jesus

  934. And that's it

  935. We learn from Jesus

  936. In order to

  937. Live for Jesus

  938. We take in his words

  939. To live out his words

  940. We make it our aim

  941. To please him

  942. It informs the way we live

  943. He has poured out

  944. His extravagant grace

  945. Through the cross

  946. And now we get

  947. To live this

  948. Radical discipleship

  949. To Jesus

  950. Learning from him

  951. In order to live

  952. For him

  953. And it's in order

  954. To become like Jesus

  955. We learn from him

  956. To live for him

  957. To become like him

  958. In your living out

  959. Of what you are learning

  960. You become like him

  961. You think like him

  962. You speak like him

  963. You engage others

  964. Like him

  965. You get angry

  966. At what he gets angry at

  967. You delight

  968. In what he delights in

  969. You become like him

  970. There's this great passage

  971. In the apostle Paul

  972. In 2nd Corinthians

  973. Chapter 3

  974. The apostle Paul

  975. The apostle Paul writes

  976. This

  977. And we all

  978. With unveiled face

  979. Beholding the glory

  980. Of the Lord

  981. Beholding the glory

  982. Of the Lord

  983. Are being transformed

  984. Into the same image

  985. Becoming like him

  986. From one degree

  987. Of glory to another

  988. For this comes

  989. From the Lord

  990. Who is the spirit

  991. How do we behold

  992. The glory of the Lord

  993. Chapter 4 verse 6

  994. For God who said

  995. Let light shine out

  996. Of darkness

  997. Has shown in our hearts

  998. To give the light

  999. Of the knowledge

  1000. Of the glory

  1001. Of God

  1002. In the face

  1003. Of Jesus Christ

  1004. We learn from him

  1005. To become like him

  1006. We learn

  1007. We live

  1008. We become like

1009. So what is a disciple

  1010. A disciple

  1011. Is anyone

  1012. Who by God's grace

  1013. Is laying down

  1014. Their life

  1015. To learn from

  1016. Live for

  1017. And become like Jesus

1018. All because we love him

  1019. His love for us

  1020. And his transforming grace

  1021. It fuels our love

  1022. For him

1023. And we live that love out

  1024. By laying down

  1025. Our lives

  1026. Learning from him

  1027. Living for him

  1028. And over time

  1029. Becoming like him

  1030. Brothers and sisters

  1031. That's his call

  1032. On your life today

  1033. If any of you

  1034. Would come after him

  1035. You must lay down

  1036. Your life

  1037. And learn from him

  1038. To live for him

  1039. To become like him

  1040. In verses 35 through 38

  1041. Jesus gives us

  1042. His cost benefit analysis

1043. This is a big call

  1044. And in verses 35 through 38

  1045. Jesus says

1046. This is why it's worth it

  1047. Remember

  1048. Who's speaking here

  1049. The creator

  1050. Redeemer

  1051. And judge

  1052. Is speaking here

  1053. He's doing the math

  1054. For us

  1055. If you know

  1056. The scale

1057. Of what he's calling us to

  1058. Jesus is saying

  1059. This is why

  1060. It's worth it

  1061. I'm worth it

  1062. Jesus says

  1063. In verse 35

  1064. For whoever

  1065. Would save his life

  1066. And what he's talking

  1067. About there is

  1068. Whoever is trying

  1069. To live a self-centered

  1070. Life for this

  1071. Present world

  1072. Who's trying to

  1073. Live this self-determined

  1074. Life out

  1075. That is essentially

  1076. Saying no to me

  1077. You lose it

  1078. There's no salvation

  1079. In that

  1080. But whoever

  1081. Loses his life

  1082. Whoever lays down

  1083. His life

  1084. For him

  1085. For the gospel's sake

  1086. He's saved

  1087. Grace

  1088. Has come home

  1089. Only those

  1090. Who have experienced

  1091. The extraordinary

  1092. Grace of God

  1093. Will respond

1094. In such a radical way

  1095. He goes into

  1096. This cost-benefit analysis

  1097. 35, 36, and 37

  1098. And it's in verse 38

  1099. Though

  1100. That he changes

  1101. The language

  1102. And he starts talking

  1103. About being ashamed

  1104. For whoever

  1105. Is ashamed of me

  1106. And of my words

  1107. In this adulterous

  1108. And sinful generation

  1109. We're living

  1110. In that generation

  1111. We're living

  1112. In the domain

  1113. Of darkness

  1114. For whoever

  1115. Is ashamed of me

  1116. What Jesus is saying

  1117. There's whoever

  1118. Who is choosing

  1119. Not to deny themselves

1120. And take up their cross

  1121. To follow me

  1122. Whoever's insisting

  1123. On their own way

  1124. He says

  1125. Of him

1126. Will the son of man

  1127. Daniel 7, 13, and 14

  1128. Also be ashamed of

1129. When he comes in the glory

  1130. Of his father

  1131. With the holy angels

  1132. It's a warning

  1133. Of judgment

  1134. When he comes

  1135. Who you choose

  1136. Now matters

  1137. What Jesus is saying

  1138. You've got a choice

  1139. To make

  1140. Between living

  1141. Your life for you

  1142. And living your life

  1143. For Jesus

  1144. And for Jesus

  1145. The decision

  1146. Is very clear

  1147. Live for me

  1148. And live

  1149. So what is

  1150. A disciple

  1151. Of Jesus

  1152. According to Jesus

  1153. Anyone

  1154. Who's done the math

  1155. Who by God's grace

  1156. Is laying down

  1157. Their life

  1158. To learn from

  1159. Live for

  1160. And become

  1161. Like Jesus

  1162. Because you love him

1163. You can think about it

  1164. In four L's

  1165. Lay it down

  1166. Learn from Jesus

  1167. Live for Jesus

  1168. Become like Jesus

  1169. All out of

  1170. A love for Jesus

  1171. This

  1172. This amazing grace

1173. Poured out at the cross

  1174. It results

  1175. In a radical discipleship

  1176. To Jesus

  1177. For those of us

1178. Who have come to know him

  1179. We've realized

  1180. He's the treasure hidden

  1181. In the field

  1182. And you sell

  1183. Everything you have

  1184. To have that

  1185. Let me just hit

  1186. A couple implications

  1187. And we'll be done

  1188. Here's what this means

1189. For us as a church

  1190. As a church

  1191. Now we have

  1192. A common

  1193. Definition

  1194. Of what a disciple

  1195. Is

  1196. According to Jesus

  1197. Someone who

  1198. By God's grace

  1199. Is laying down

  1200. Their life

  1201. In order to learn

  1202. From

  1203. Live for

  1204. Become like

  1205. Jesus

  1206. Out of a love

  1207. For him

  1208. We've got that

  1209. Now

  1210. We need to unite

  1211. Around it

1212. We need to own it

  1213. And we can't

  1214. Conveniently

  1215. Leave out

  1216. The

  1217. Deny yourself

  1218. And take up

  1219. Your cross

  1220. Part

  1221. Nor can we

  1222. Stay vague

  1223. On the

  1224. Follow me

  1225. Part

  1226. We've got to

  1227. Be clear

  1228. Secondly

  1229. You need to ask

  1230. Yourself this

  1231. Morning

  1232. Am I a disciple

  1233. Of Jesus

  1234. According to

  1235. His definition

  1236. Let me help you

  1237. With that

  1238. Have you laid

  1239. Down your life

  1240. For him

  1241. When

  1242. Are you

  1243. Learning from

  1244. Jesus

  1245. What

  1246. Are you

  1247. Living for

  1248. Jesus

  1249. Where

  1250. Are you

  1251. Becoming like

  1252. Jesus

  1253. How

  1254. Assess

  1255. Yourself

  1256. Maybe today

  1257. You've realized

  1258. It's been a long

  1259. Time since I

  1260. Have said

  1261. I'm laying my

  1262. Life down for

  1263. You Jesus

  1264. Every morning

  1265. Early on

  1266. I'm making a

  1267. Statement

  1268. I'm saying

  1269. Something to

  1270. The extent of

  1271. Lord Jesus

  1272. My life is

  1273. Not my own

  1274. You've bought

  1275. Me

  1276. At a price

  1277. I am gladly

  1278. Yours today

  1279. You join me

  1280. Every day

  1281. Laying down

  1282. Your life

  1283. For Jesus

  1284. This gives us

  1285. To

  1286. A way to

  1287. Move forward

  1288. Together

  1289. It gives us

  1290. A common

  1291. Way of

  1292. Talking about

  1293. Discipleship

  1294. So that in

  1295. Our life

  1296. Groups

  1297. We can

  1298. Talk with

  1299. One another

  1300. About

  1301. You know

  1302. What

  1303. Last week

  1304. I didn't

  1305. Lay down

  1306. My life

  1307. Until

  1308. Friday

  1309. Or

  1310. You can

  1311. Say

  1312. Hey man

  1313. I am

  1314. Seeing

  1315. Jesus

  1316. In you

  1317. Brother

  1318. Keep on

  1319. Pressing on

  1320. I

  1321. Had a

  1322. Conversation

  1323. With a

  1324. Sister

  1325. This past

  1326. Week

  1327. And

  1328. Her life

  1329. Dramatically

  1330. Changed

  1331. In 2008

  1332. And I

  1333. Was able

  1334. To tell

  1335. Her

  1336. You've

  1337. Been

  1338. Changed

  1339. I can

  1340. See

  1341. It

  1342. We get

  1343. To help

  1344. Each other

  1345. Follow

  1346. Jesus

  1347. And of

  1348. Course

  1349. This helps

  1350. Us

  1351. Know how

  1352. To tell

  1353. Others

  1354. About

  1355. Jesus

  1356. And not

  1357. Leave out

  1358. The small

  1359. Print

  1360. But to

  1361. Say to

  1362. People

  1363. If you

  1364. Understand

  1365. Who

  1366. Jesus

  1367. Is

  1368. And what

  1369. He's

  1370. Done

  1371. The

  1372. Response

  1373. Is

  1374. Radical

  1375. To deny

  1376. Yourself

  1377. And take

  1378. Up

  1379. Your

  1380. Cross

  1381. And to

  1382. Follow

  1383. Him

  1384. We talked

  1385. About

  1386. Conviction

  1387. One

  1388. Why make

  1389. Disciples

  1390. Jesus

  1391. All around

  1392. The globe

  1393. Is making

  1394. Disciples

  1395. And today

  1396. We talked

  1397. About

  1398. Conviction

  1399. Two

  1400. What is a

  1401. Disciple

  1402. Next week

  1403. We get

  1404. To talk

  1405. About

  1406. How to

  1407. Make

  1408. Disciples

  1409. Let me

  1410. Pray

  1411. God in

  1412. Heaven

  1413. Lord Jesus

  1414. Thank you

  1415. So much

  1416. That you

  1417. Are a

  1418. Risen

  1419. Lord

  1420. You are

  1421. Our

  1422. Creator

  1423. Our

  1424. Redeemer

  1425. And our

  1426. Judge

  1427. And this

  1428. Call that

  1429. We're

  1430. Reading

  1431. About

  1432. Is your

  1433. Call

  1434. On us

  1435. Today

  1436. And we

  1437. Say yes

  1438. To you

  1439. Lord

  1440. Jesus

  1441. We gladly

  1442. Lay our

  1443. Lives down

  1444. We want

  1445. To learn

  1446. From you

  1447. We want

  1448. To live

  1449. For you

  1450. We want

  1451. To be

  1452. Like you

  1453. We want

  1454. To love

  1455. You more

  1456. Make it

  1457. So Lord

  1458. Jesus

  1459. It's in

  1460. Your precious

  1461. Name we

  1462. Pray

  1463. Amen
