  1. You know, we're now in the middle of this revisioning series,

  2. this sermon series on aiming our church at making disciples of all people.

  3. And I've got to be honest with you all, this is no program.

  4. This is no fad.

  5. What we're talking about is culture, church culture, shaping our culture.

  6. So what we're actually talking about is becoming a church in making disciples.

  7. It's the air that we breathe.

  8. It's the fabric of who we are.

  9. We're a church that is following Jesus ourselves,

  10. and we are looking to bring people with us as we run after Jesus.

  11. Now, for the communion meditation, I reminded you of the big picture.

  12. And I've got to be honest with you, I was going to bring my computer.

  13. I always forget my power cord, so I put the power cord in my backpack,

  14. brought it here to the building, opened up my backpack,

  15. and there was my power cord, but not my computer.

  16. So I'm going to have to verbally remind you of things.

  17. So the big picture, triune God, big plan, Christ at the middle of everything,

  18. flipping people, making people into disciples,

  19. running in domain of darkness away from God,

  20. by God's grace, aiming them at and running them to Jesus,

  21. and it's all for His glory.

  22. And then last week, I sought to aim you from Mark chapter 8

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  23. of what a disciple is,

  24. and I threw at you a bunch of L's.

  25. A disciple is anyone who is,

  26. who is by God's grace,

  27. laying down their life

  28. to learn from Jesus,

  29. to live for Jesus,

  30. to become like Jesus,

  31. all out of a love for Jesus.

  32. I was with some friends last night,

  33. and

  34. I was asked if I cook.

  35. And to be honest,

  36. my greatest joy in the cooking process

  37. is the eating part of the process.

  38. But I've got some cooking skills.

  39. I have some proficiency on the grill.

  40. I can flip a burger,

  41. make some steaks,

  42. I'm hit and miss with chicken.

  43. But if there is one thing I'm known for in my family,

  44. it's my ability to create massive,

  45. substantial chocolate chip pancakes.

  46. Because they're really just four ingredients.

  47. Bisquick,

  48. milk, eggs, chocolate chip.

  49. Very straightforward,

  50. very predictable result.

  51. With just those four ingredients,

  52. give me a hot griddle,

  53. a little time,

  54. a little attention I can give,

  55. and I will work you pancake wonders.

  56. But what does making pancakes

  57. have to do with making disciples?

  58. Well,

  59. if there was a recipe

  60. God has for making disciples,

  61. there are four essential ingredients.

  62. And if we are actively

  63. deploying,

  64. using,

  65. making the most of these means of grace,

  66. God will be working through us

  67. to make disciples,

  68. not just of ourselves,

  69. but of those living in darkness right now.

  70. So this morning,

  71. I'm going to stick pretty close

  72. to the chapter,

  73. conviction number three,

  74. how are disciples made

  75. from this book.

  76. And I want to walk you through

  77. the four Ps.

  78. Proclamation of God's Word,

  79. prayerful dependence on the Holy Spirit,

  80. people are God's fellow workers,

  81. and persevering step by step.

  82. These four ingredients

  83. are essential to making disciples.

  84. It's God's means of grace.

  85. We get to join Him

  86. in what He's doing.

  87. So,

  88. I'm going to take

  89. each of these ingredients

  90. one at a time.

  91. I'm going to point you

  92. at a verse in the Bible

  93. that talks about it.

  94. So let's get cooking.

  95. Ingredient number one,

  96. proclamation of the Word of God.

  97. Would you open up your Bibles

  98. to 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3:16

  99. verses 16 and 17?

  100. Just to give you a little background,

  101. the Apostle Paul is writing.

  102. 2 Timothy was actually a letter

  103. to his protege, Timothy,

  104. and he is helping Timothy

  105. establish a church

  106. in the city of Ephesus.

  107. And what a church is,

  108. it's a people

  109. who've been flipped

  110. by God's grace

  111. who are following

  112. Jesus Christ together.

  113. Well, in chapter 3,

  114. Paul's reminding Timothy

  115. of the vital importance

  116. of the Scripture,

  117. the Word of God.

  118. Hear God's Word

  119. on God's Word.

  120. 2 Timothy 3, 16.

  121. All Scripture

  122. is breathed out by God

  123. and profitable.

  124. All Scripture,

  125. every word,

  126. is breathed out by God

  127. and profitable.

  128. Here's the claim

  129. of this book in your hands.

  130. Every word of this book

  131. did not originate

  132. in the mind

  133. of a human being.

  134. Every word of this book

  135. originated in the mind

  136. of God Himself.

  137. When we read those words,

  138. all Scriptures

  139. breathe out by God,

  140. it's getting at the very source,

  141. origin,

  142. of the words of this book,

  143. where they come from.

  144. God Himself,

  145. from Genesis

  146. to Revelation,

  147. through the words

  148. in this book,

  149. is speaking to us.

  150. That is a phenomenal claim.

  151. So what this book contains

  152. is God's definitive

  153. and authoritative instruction

  154. on a variety

  155. of different subjects,

  156. one of which is God Himself.

  157. Maybe you remember

  158. coming through

  159. our membership class.

  160. When we talk about the Bible

  161. in our membership class,

  162. I try to make the case

  163. is the Bible is like

  164. God's selfie,

  165. making Himself known to you.

  166. This is who I am

  167. in all my glory.

  168. This book is also

  169. authoritative and definitive.

  170. This is God speaking

  171. on the nature

  172. of human beings

  173. that were image bearers

  174. corrupted by sin

  175. in need of salvation.

  176. This book describes for us

  177. over and over again

  178. God's big plan

  179. for the fullness of time

  180. in which He is rescuing

  181. and restoring sinners

  182. into a relationship

  183. with Himself.

  184. This book tells us,

  185. God tells us

  186. how we are to live

  187. in light of what He's done

  188. on our behalf.

  189. How to follow Jesus now.

  190. This book,

  191. it lays out a way

  192. for us to live.

  193. This book is absolutely

  194. essential

  195. to becoming a Christian

  196. and to growing

  197. as a Christian.

  198. It shows us

  199. how to become a disciple

  200. and how to continually

  201. to lay down your life

  202. in order to learn from,

  203. live for,

  204. and become like Jesus

  205. again and again.

  206. So this book,

  207. our posture

  208. is not this.

  209. Hmm.

  210. Our posture,

  211. each and every one of us,

  212. is this.

  213. Each one of us

  214. comes under the authority

  215. of God speaking to us.

  216. It's authoritative.

  217. It's definitive.

  218. It makes a claim

  219. on our lives.

  220. It's vital.

  221. We can't live

  222. without God's Word.

  223. Jesus said,

  224. man cannot live

  225. by bread alone,

  226. but by every word

  227. that proceeds

  228. from the mouth of God.

  229. So 2 Timothy 3.16

  230. is talking about

  231. the nature,

  232. all scriptures,

  233. God breathe,

  234. of this book.

  235. But it also

  236. points to

  237. its effectiveness.

  238. All scriptures

  239. breathe out by God

  240. and profitable.

  241. It gets something done.

  242. And if you look

  243. at the rest of 16,

  244. it starts telling me

  245. what it gets done.

  246. For teaching,

  247. for reproof,

  248. for correction,

  249. and for training

  250. in righteousness.

  251. Okay,

  252. does everybody have

  253. a directional app

  254. on their smartphone?

  255. Yes.

  256. I see some heads nodding.

  257. Well,

  258. if you have a directional app

  259. on your cell phone,

  260. it shows you how to go

  261. from point A to point B.

  262. It shows you

  263. the path to travel on

  264. to get to your destination.

  265. And if you go off the path,

  266. your phone app

  267. will let you know

  268. you're off the path.

  269. And then your phone app

  270. will reroute you

  271. in order to show you

  272. how to get back

  273. on the path.

  274. And then,

  275. if you are regularly

  276. using that directional app

  277. on your phone,

  278. you are regularly

  279. trained by your app

  280. and how to get

  281. to certain places.

  282. God's Word,

  283. this book,

  284. God speaking to us,

  285. shows us

  286. how to live.

  287. live.

  288. It lays out a path

  289. for us to walk.

  290. It teaches us

  291. the way we should go.

  292. And then when we veer

  293. from God's path for us,

  294. it rebukes us.

  295. You're driving over the curb.

  296. Don't do that.

  297. Stop.

  298. That's not good for you.

  299. And then it corrects us

  300. how to get back

  301. on the path.

  302. How to get back

  303. on the path of life

  304. and following Jesus.

  305. And then it trains us

  306. in righteousness.

  307. It shows us

  308. again and again

  309. how to live

  310. in terms of our speech,

  311. in terms of our sexuality,

  312. in terms of how you

  313. think about yourself,

  314. how you steward

  315. your finances,

  316. what it means

  317. to follow Jesus

  318. again and again.

  319. It lays out a path

  320. for us to walk,

  321. helps us know

  322. when we fall off the path,

  323. step out of the path,

  324. how to get back on,

  325. and then over and over again.

  326. This book

  327. gets something done.

  328. It's life to us.

  329. It's transformational.

  330. And so what this means

  331. for our discipleship

  332. is that it's absolutely

  333. for us

  334. in our following Jesus

  335. and it's absolutely essential

  336. in helping others

  337. follow Jesus too.

  338. So the question now becomes,

  339. how do you respond?

  340. How do you respond

  341. to this reality

  342. that we must be

  343. proclaiming God's word?

  344. Well, it begins

  345. with our own intake

  346. and application

  347. of God's word.

  348. So let me just give you

  349. a quick visual.

  350. This is from the Navigators.

  351. Here are four ways

  352. you can take God's word

  353. into your life.

  354. It's by hearing

  355. God's word proclaimed.

  356. It's by reading God's word,

  357. having time,

  358. where you're regularly

  359. reading His word,

  360. studying God's word.

  361. We have a bunch of ladies

  362. on Tuesday

  363. studying 2 Timothy

  364. by memorizing God's word,

  365. hiding it on your heart.

  366. These are all ways

  367. where we take God's word

  368. into us

  369. so that God can move us.

  370. But there's one thing

  371. to take it in.

  372. There's another thing

  373. to live it out.

  374. That's why you need

  375. your thumb.

  376. Your thumb

  377. is your applier.

  378. It's what gives you

  379. a grip

  380. on God's word

  381. and gets God's word

  382. a grip on you.

  383. And so what it is

  384. is when you hear God's word,

  385. you seek to apply it.

  386. It gives you a grip

  387. on what God is saying.

  388. And when you hear God's word

  389. and you read God's word,

  390. it gives you a better grip.

  391. And then you go on

  392. with studying

  393. and then you go on

  394. with memorizing.

  395. As long as you're applying it,

  396. you're going to be

  397. getting a hold

  398. on God's word

  399. and God will be

  400. getting a hold on you.

  401. You take it in

  402. to live it out.

  403. And that's what we teach

  404. other people,

  405. other disciples.

  406. We help them

  407. take God's word in

  408. by hearing it,

  409. by reading it,

  410. by studying it,

  411. by memorizing it.

  412. Because this book

  413. shows us the way to live,

  414. how to follow Jesus.

  415. Now,

  416. this point

  417. about how to make disciples

  418. means we need to be

  419. proclaiming God's word.

  420. And typically,

  421. when Christians hear that,

  422. they think,

  423. I need to preach God's word.

  424. I need to pull up a pulpit

  425. and proclaim God's word

  426. to someone.

  427. That's one way

  428. you proclaim God's word.

  429. It's not the only way

  430. to proclaim God's word.

  431. Think about it more

  432. in terms of having

  433. conversations about God's word.

  434. About raising it like this.

  435. You're in a life group.

  436. Someone brings something up.

  437. Well,

  438. what does God's word

  439. say about it?

  440. That's how you get into

  441. a conversation

  442. about God's word.

  443. But that doesn't end there.

  444. It continues on

  445. by saying,

  446. now that we know

  447. what God's word

  448. says about it,

  449. how do we live our lives

  450. in light of that?

  451. How do we live it out?

  452. Could you imagine

  453. more and more

  454. of those conversations

  455. in our church?

  456. What does God's word say?

  457. How do we live it out?

  458. We're proclaiming God's word

  459. to one another.

  460. It happens conversationally.

  461. It happens over text.

  462. This past week,

  463. the life group I was in,

  464. we are swapping definitions

  465. of what it means

  466. to be a disciple.

  467. It was encouraging.

  468. It's getting God's word

  469. into our lives.

  470. So this book,

  471. God's speaking to us,

  472. this is our shared,

  473. authoritative,

  474. directional app

  475. that we're all

  476. working off of

  477. to follow Jesus together.

  478. That's the first ingredient.

  479. Here's the second.

  480. The second ingredient

  481. is prayerful dependence

  482. on the Holy Spirit.

  483. If you would turn

  484. in your Bibles

  485. to John chapter 16,

    John 16 chapter mention

  486. we're going to be looking

  487. at verses 12, 13, and 14,

  488. specifically 14.

  489. But as soon as you bring up

  490. the Holy Spirit

  491. in a room of Christians,

  492. you can have a variety

  493. of different responses.

  494. Here are two.

  495. People hear Holy Spirit

  496. and they think,

  497. oh, we long to experience

  498. more of the Holy Spirit's fullness,

  499. and that's a good thing.

  500. But many times,

  501. people have a very specific idea

  502. of what it looks like

  503. to experience

  504. the Holy Spirit's fullness.

  505. On the other side,

  506. people hear you say Holy Spirit,

  507. and they get a little guarded

  508. and a little suspicious

  509. because they've come out

  510. or they've seen abuse

  511. of the Holy Spirit.

  512. Whether that's in teaching

  513. or in experience,

  514. it's left a bad taste

  515. in your mouth.

  516. And so, what do we do?

  517. Here's what we do.

  518. What does God's Word say

  519. about the Holy Spirit?

  520. That's why I have you

  521. in John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  522. In John chapter 16,

    John 16 chapter mention

  523. Jesus is preparing

  524. His disciples

  525. for His departure.

  526. He's going to be crucified.

  527. He's going to be raised.

  528. He's going to ascend.

  529. He's leaving them,

  530. but He's saying,

  531. there's someone better

  532. that I'm going to leave with you.

  533. The Holy Spirit.

  534. So, let me just read verses.

  535. It'd be good if I'm

  536. in the book of John.

  537. Verses 12 through 14.

  538. Jesus speaking,

  539. I still have many things

  540. to say to you,

  541. but you cannot bear them now.

  542. When the Spirit of truth comes,

  543. He will guide you

  544. into all truth,

  545. for He will not speak

  546. on His own authority,

  547. but whatever He hears,

  548. He will speak,

  549. and He will declare to you

  550. the things that are to come.

  551. He will glorify Me,

  552. for He will take what is Mine

  553. and declare it to you.

  554. Just a couple things to note.

  555. The Holy Spirit is sent

  556. to guide us into truth.

  557. This book is our truth.

  558. The Holy Spirit is seeking

  559. to guide us in our living

  560. according to the truth

  561. revealed in this book.

  562. Furthermore,

  563. the Holy Spirit's a proclaimer.

  564. Did you see that in this passage?

  565. He will not speak

  566. on His own authority,

  567. but whatever He hears,

  568. He will speak,

  569. He will declare.

  570. The Holy Spirit is a revealer.

  571. He's an illuminator.

  572. He wants to make you know

  573. what God's truth is.

  574. He wants that.

  575. The third thing I want you

  576. to quickly notice is

  577. the personal pronoun He.

  578. He will guide you

  579. into all truth.

  580. He will not speak

  581. on His own authority.

  582. He hears.

  583. He will speak.

  584. He will declare.

  585. He will glorify Me.

  586. The Holy Spirit

  587. is the third person

  588. of the Trinity.

  589. He is not

  590. some kind of

  591. impersonal force.

  592. He is a person.

  593. Ephesians 4.30 says

  594. you can grieve Him

  595. just like you can grieve Jesus.

  596. So let me aim you now

  597. at what He says

  598. in verse 14

  599. because this is a very

  600. simple, general way

  601. to understand

  602. what the Holy Spirit

  603. is seeking to do

  604. in our lives.

  605. We don't need to be

  606. afraid of this.

  607. It's not the only thing

  608. but it is

  609. the primary aim

  610. of the Holy Spirit.

  611. Jesus says of Him

  612. He will glorify Me

  613. for He will take

  614. what is Mine

  615. and declare it to you.

  616. Jesus says

  617. of the Holy Spirit

  618. He will glorify

  619. spotlight Me.

  620. the one in whom

  621. salvation is accomplished.

  622. The one in whom

  623. we are called to follow.

  624. He will spotlight

  625. Jesus.

  626. J.I. Packer

  627. a prolific author

  628. and teacher

  629. recently died.

  630. The story goes

  631. he was on his way

  632. to preach

  633. an evening service

  634. in Vancouver,

  635. British Columbia

  636. and he was walking up

  637. a hill to the church

  638. night was falling

  639. and he was preaching

  640. on this passage

  641. He will glorify Me

  642. and he still hadn't

  643. he didn't have

  644. an opening illustration.

  645. So he's trying to think

  646. of the opening illustration.

  647. He's walking up

  648. to the church building

  649. and then he looks up

  650. and bam

  651. he has

  652. his opening illustration

  653. because as night

  654. was falling

  655. on the front

  656. of this building

  657. was a cross

  658. illuminated

  659. illuminated by a spotlight.

  660. That's it.

  661. The Holy Spirit

  662. isn't seeking

  663. to draw attention

  664. to Him

  665. Himself

  666. but to the Son

  667. to Jesus

  668. to His cross

  669. work

  670. to His person

  671. so that we could

  672. glorify Jesus.

  673. So this third person

  674. of the Trinity

  675. is by God's plan

  676. the first person

  677. of the Trinity

  678. seeking to glorify

  679. the second person

  680. of the Trinity

  681. who is at the very center

  682. of God's plan

  683. of salvation.

  684. So what does this mean

  685. for us?

  686. Simply said

  687. the primary aim

  688. of the Holy Spirit

  689. is to spotlight

  690. Jesus to us

  691. to reveal Jesus

  692. to us

  693. to spotlight

  694. Jesus in us

  695. to make us

  696. like Jesus

  697. to sanctify us

  698. and then to empower

  699. our witness

  700. to others.

  701. The Holy Spirit

  702. is looking to

  703. spotlight Jesus

  704. to us

  705. in us

  706. and through us.

  707. And the good news

  708. is this

  709. we don't need

  710. to fear the Holy Spirit.

  711. We don't need

  712. to fear Him.

  713. Jesus Himself

  714. is saying here

  715. He's going

  716. to glorify me.

  717. We don't need

  718. to fear that.

  719. In fact

  720. it should compel you

  721. to seek

  722. the Holy Spirit.

  723. To seek

  724. the Spirit

  725. to do His work

  726. to us

  727. and in us

  728. and through us

  729. for the glory

  730. of Jesus.

  731. So what does it mean

  732. to prayerfully

  733. depend upon

  734. the Holy Spirit?

  735. Well we regularly

  736. ask God our Father

  737. to pour out

  738. the Holy Spirit

  739. on us

  740. in various ways

  741. so that Jesus

  742. would be exalted.

  743. And I tell you that

  744. because that's exactly

  745. what the Apostle Paul

  746. does in Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:14–19

  747. chapter 3

  748. verses 14 through 19

  749. when he prays

  750. for the Ephesian church.

  751. He asks God the Father

  752. to pour out

  753. the Holy Spirit

  754. so that Christ's love

  755. would fill them

  756. with the fullness

  757. of God

  758. and that's what

  759. unites them.

  760. So here's how

  761. you could pray.

  762. It's

  763. you're

  764. regularly

  765. asking God

  766. the Father

  767. oh God

  768. fill me afresh

  769. fill me afresh

  770. so that

  771. by your Spirit

  772. so that I can

  773. I can live for Jesus

  774. in front of my children

  775. today.

  776. Fill me afresh

  777. so that I can

  778. kind of speak

  779. encouraging words

  780. to my life group.

  781. Fill me afresh

  782. so that I can

  783. exercise my gifts

  784. in the church

  785. for the glory of Jesus.

  786. Fill me afresh

  787. because I got a hard

  788. phone conversation

  789. and I want to exalt Jesus

  790. in me and through me.

  791. It also gives us

  792. a diagnostic

  793. and here's what

  794. I mean by that.

  795. How do we know

  796. that the Holy Spirit

  797. is working in our church?

  798. Is Jesus

  799. being glorified?

  800. Is He being revealed

  801. to us?

  802. Are we being

  803. conformed to Him?

  804. Is Jesus being

  805. made known

  806. through us?

  807. These are ways

  808. in which we respond

  809. and live in light of

  810. prayerful dependence

  811. on the Holy Spirit.

  812. That's the second

  813. ingredient of making

  814. disciples.

  815. It's not by my

  816. not by power

  817. but by my Spirit

  818. says the Lord.

  819. The Lord

  820. let me now

  821. move you to

  822. the third ingredient.

  823. People

  824. are God's

  825. fellow workers.

  826. I don't know

  827. if you knew this.

  828. When you became

  829. a Christian

  830. you were called

  831. into Christian

  832. ministry.

  833. When you put

  834. your faith in Jesus

  835. He put His claim

  836. on you

  837. and called you

  838. into the priesthood

  839. of all believers.

  840. believers.

  841. A disciple

  842. of Jesus

  843. is to be

  844. making disciples

  845. of Jesus.

  846. A couple weeks

  847. ago when I was

  848. preaching on

  849. God's plan

  850. for the fullness

  851. of time

  852. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  853. I really sought

  854. to impress upon you

  855. that God

  856. right now

  857. is carrying out

  858. His plan

  859. all around the world.

  860. He is moving

  861. people to the cross

  862. flipping them

  863. by His grace

  864. and calling them

  865. to follow Him.

  866. He is doing it

  867. right now

  868. and we get

  869. to join Him

  870. in what He is doing.

  871. In fact

  872. He calls us

  873. to join Him

  874. in what He is doing.

  875. When you are

  876. converted

  877. you are called

  878. into ministry.

  879. I am going to

  880. develop this

  881. next week

  882. in a sermon

  883. unto itself

  884. but I just want

  885. to point you

  886. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  887. chapter 4

  888. real quick.

  889. I want to show

  890. you just a few

  891. things to whet

  892. your appetite.

  893. right.

  894. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  895. chapter 4

  896. 11 through 16

  897. Paul is talking

  898. about Christian

  899. ministry

  900. and in 411

  901. he says

  902. and he gave

  903. the apostles

  904. the prophets

  905. and the evangelists

  906. the shepherds

  907. and teachers

  908. to equip the saints

  909. for the work

  910. of ministry

  911. for building up

  912. the body of Christ

  913. until we all

  914. attain to the unity

  915. of faith

  916. and of the knowledge

  917. of the Son of God

  918. to mature manhood

  919. to the measure

  920. of the stature

  921. of the fullness

  922. of Christ.

  923. Look at verse 15.

  924. Rather speaking

  925. the truth and love

  926. we are to grow up

  927. in every way

  928. into him

  929. who is the head

  930. into Christ.

  931. Let me point out

  932. just three quick things.

  933. First,

  934. the nature

  935. of the work

  936. of ministry.

  937. In verse 12

  938. to equip the saints

  939. for the work

  940. of ministry

  941. for building up

  942. the body of Christ.

  943. What is ministry

  944. in this passage?

  945. Building up

  946. the body of Christ.

  947. Don't confuse that.

  948. Don't think

  949. that's something

  950. other than

  951. making disciples

  952. of Jesus.

  953. building up

  954. the body of Christ

  955. and making

  956. disciples of Jesus.

  957. We're talking

  958. about the same thing.

  959. We're just talking

  960. using different language.

  961. Paul's using

  962. his favorite metaphor

  963. for the church.

  964. Building up the body

  965. into our head

  966. Jesus Christ.

  967. So,

  968. when Paul talks

  969. about ministry here,

  970. he's not talking

  971. about something

  972. other than

  973. making disciples.

  974. It's exactly

  975. what he's talking

  976. about.

  977. Moving people

  978. towards Jesus.

  979. Christians.

  980. The second thing

  981. I want you to note

  982. is who does

  983. the work

  984. of ministry?

  985. In verse 11,

  986. he gives

  987. Christian leaders,

  988. apostles,

  989. prophets,

  990. evangelists,

  991. shepherds,

  992. teachers,

  993. to verse 12,

  994. to equip the saints

  995. for the work

  996. of ministry.

  997. The saints

  998. are all Christians.

  999. It's not an elite

  1000. group of Christians.

  1001. Saints are all

  1002. Christians.

  1003. Christians.

  1004. And it's the saints

  1005. who are to do

  1006. the work

  1007. of ministry.

  1008. Building up

  1009. the body of Christ,

  1010. making disciples

  1011. of others.

  1012. When you were

  1013. made alive

  1014. by the grace

  1015. of God,

  1016. you were

  1017. deputized

  1018. as a minister

  1019. of the gospel

  1020. to make disciples

  1021. to build the church.

  1022. The third thing

1023. I want to point out

  1024. quickly is

  1025. the primary way

  1026. we

  1027. build up the body,

  1028. make disciples.

  1029. It's in verse 15.

  1030. Rather,

  1031. speaking the truth

  1032. in love,

1033. we are to grow up

  1034. in every way

  1035. into Him

  1036. who's the head

  1037. into Jesus.

  1038. We use this book

  1039. and speak this book

  1040. in love

  1041. to one another

  1042. to move us

  1043. to Jesus.

  1044. Imagine with me,

  1045. you go to the

  1046. Christ the King

  1047. Church webpage.

  1048. You click on it,

  1049. you enter in,

  1050. you have this menu

  1051. that says

  1052. leadership

  1053. and then it says

  1054. ministry staff.

  1055. You click on

  1056. the ministry staff

  1057. of Christ the King

  1058. Church

  1059. and to your surprise,

  1060. pages

  1061. full of members

  1062. and regular

  1063. attenders

  1064. of Christ the King

  1065. Church.

  1066. Pictures of faces,

  1067. names,

  1068. names,

  1069. you just scroll

  1070. through person

  1071. after person.

  1072. Brothers and

  1073. sisters,

  1074. the ministry

  1075. staff of

  1076. Christ the King

  1077. Church

  1078. is Christ

  1079. the King

  1080. Church.

  1081. We

  1082. are the

  1083. ministers.

  1084. We are the

  1085. priesthood

  1086. in this church.

  1087. So what does

  1088. this mean?

  1089. We're all in it

  1090. together.

  1091. we're all

  1092. ministering

  1093. together,

  1094. moving towards

  1095. Jesus.

  1096. You've been

  1097. called by Christ

  1098. and gifted by the

  1099. Spirit of God

  1100. for the work

  1101. of ministry.

  1102. So the question

  1103. isn't,

  1104. should I do

  1105. something,

  1106. serve in the

  1107. church?

  1108. It's where

  1109. and how is the

  1110. best way to

  1111. steward my gift?

  1112. All of us

  1113. are on the

  1114. Christ the King

  1115. Church ministry

  1116. staff team,

  1117. all of us.

  1118. It should

  1119. change the way

  1120. you think about

  1121. yourself.

  1122. It should

  1123. move you from

  1124. thinking of

  1125. yourself as a

  1126. consumer to a

  1127. participant because

  1128. you're part of the

  1129. ministry staff of

  1130. this church.

  1131. The third

  1132. ingredient to be

  1133. making disciples is

  1134. people are God's

  1135. fellow workers.

  1136. God, by His

  1137. grace, works

  1138. through all of

  1139. us to build

  1140. us up and

  1141. others,

  1142. into Jesus.

  1143. That's essential

  1144. to making

  1145. disciples.

  1146. The fourth

  1147. ingredient is

  1148. persevering step

  1149. by step.

  1150. Persevering is

  1151. godly grit.

  1152. It's gumption.

  1153. It's the ability

  1154. to endure

  1155. hardship and

  1156. heartache and

  1157. headache for the

  1158. good work Jesus

  1159. is doing in you

  1160. and in others.

  1161. you endure.

  1162. You persevere.

  1163. Discipleship is a

  1164. lifelong process of

  1165. daily laying down

  1166. your life, of

  1167. daily learning from

  1168. Jesus, of daily

  1169. living for Jesus,

  1170. of daily becoming

  1171. like Jesus because

  1172. we love Him.

  1173. But it's a

  1174. lifelong process.

  1175. A church is a

  1176. community of

  1177. disciples in this

  1178. lifelong process of

  1179. following Jesus.

  1180. And we're all at

  1181. different points in

  1182. this race of

  1183. following Jesus.

  1184. Some people are

  1185. just starting out.

  1186. It's all new.

  1187. Other people have

  1188. been running for a

  1189. while.

  1190. Other people are

  1191. moving towards the

  1192. end of the race.

  1193. discipleship is a

  1194. lifelong process.

  1195. And if I can

  1196. borrow a title of

  1197. a book from

  1198. Eugene Peterson,

  1199. discipleship is a

  1200. long obedience in

  1201. the same direction

  1202. to Jesus.

  1203. It's going to

  1204. require perseverance,

1205. not just for you in

  1206. running the race.

  1207. It requires

  1208. perseverance for us

  1209. who are making

  1210. disciples of others.

  1211. It gets hard.

  1212. That's why I want to

  1213. point you to 1

  1214. Corinthians 15.

  1215. 1 Corinthians 15 is

  1216. that great passage at

1217. the end of the first

  1218. book of Corinthians.

  1219. This chapter starts

  1220. with Paul receiving

  1221. of first importance

  1222. what he heard and

  1223. passing on to us.

  1224. It's the first

  1225. importance that

  1226. Christ died for our

  1227. sins according to

  1228. the scripture.

  1229. He's buried and he

  1230. was raised on the

  1231. third day according to

  1232. the scriptures.

1233. He says that is of

  1234. what's first importance.

  1235. We call that the

  1236. gospel.

  1237. And it's that good

  1238. news in which

  1239. Paul picks up in

  1240. verse 56 and he

  1241. says,

  1242. the sting of death

  1243. is sin and the

1244. power of sin is the

  1245. law.

  1246. But thanks be to

  1247. God who gives us

  1248. the victory through

  1249. our Lord Jesus

  1250. Christ.

  1251. The gospel is a

  1252. proclamation of

  1253. victory that Jesus

  1254. won over death and

  1255. the power of sin.

  1256. It's victory.

  1257. And then in verse

  1258. 58, therefore my

  1259. beloved brothers, be

  1260. steadfast.

  1261. That word means to

  1262. be, to have a

  1263. singularity of focus.

  1264. Immovable.

  1265. That word means you

  1266. keep on keeping on

  1267. that focus.

  1268. You don't veer to

  1269. the left or the

  1270. right.

  1271. You stay on target.

  1272. You press on.

  1273. Always abounding in

  1274. the work of the

  1275. Lord.

  1276. Always being a part

  1277. of God's work.

  1278. Doing, moving people

  1279. towards Jesus

  1280. together.

  1281. Announcing the

  1282. victory.

  1283. Helping people live in

  1284. light of the victory.

  1285. Knowing that in the

1286. Lord your labor is not

  1287. in vain.

  1288. When you're doing

  1289. that, you know you're

  1290. on target.

  1291. You know you're

  1292. pleasing the Lord.

  1293. And it keeps you

  1294. from discouragement.

  1295. It helps us

  1296. persevere.

  1297. Do you know why

  1298. the Apostle Paul is

  1299. writing this to this

  1300. church?

  1301. If you're familiar

  1302. with the

  1303. Corinthian letters,

  1304. you know that the

  1305. Corinthian church,

  1306. it was a complex

  1307. and chaotic mess

  1308. of divisions

  1309. and disputes.

  1310. And here Paul is

  1311. calling the entire

  1312. church,

  1313. therefore,

  1314. my beloved

  1315. brothers,

  1316. to focus on

  1317. one thing.

  1318. To go after

  1319. one thing.

  1320. To be steadfast,

  1321. immovable,

  1322. abounding in it,

  1323. knowing that your

  1324. work regarding it

  1325. is not in vain.

  1326. Gospel work.

  1327. Moving people

  1328. towards Jesus.

  1329. Well,

  1330. like the

  1331. Corinthian church,

  1332. people have been

  1333. messy forever,

  1334. since Adam and

  1335. Eve fell.

  1336. Perseverance is

  1337. necessary.

  1338. It's a necessary

  1339. ingredient to making

  1340. disciples because

  1341. people are messy.

  1342. It gets hard.

  1343. It's challenging.

  1344. It's discouraging.

  1345. It's disappointing.

  1346. Sometimes you just

  1347. want to bail.

  1348. Sometimes you just

  1349. want to cut out,

  1350. go somewhere else.

  1351. Yesterday, I

  1352. volunteered with a

  1353. handful of folks

  1354. from our church at

  1355. the Wisconsin

  1356. Marathon,

  1357. aid station number

  1358. one.

  1359. You know,

  1360. a marathon

  1361. requires

  1362. perseverance.

  1363. Jesus,

  1364. following Jesus

  1365. is like running

  1366. a marathon.

  1367. Hebrews 12

  1368. says,

  1369. let us run

  1370. with endurance

  1371. the race marked

  1372. out for us,

  1373. looking to Jesus,

  1374. the founder and

  1375. perfecter of our

  1376. faith.

  1377. Each of us

  1378. is running a

  1379. marathon after

  1380. Jesus,

  1381. and each of us

  1382. will be tempted

  1383. to discouragement

  1384. and to despair

  1385. and to give up.

  1386. But here's what

  1387. disciple-making is.

  1388. Disciple-making is

  1389. you yourself

  1390. are running

  1391. the marathon,

  1392. enduring and

  1393. persevering,

  1394. and as you're

  1395. running,

  1396. you're seeking to

  1397. help other

  1398. fellow runners

  1399. persevere too.

  1400. You're seeking to

  1401. come alongside of

  1402. them and help

  1403. them press on.

  1404. Help them fix

  1405. their eyes on

  1406. Jesus.

  1407. Keep going.

  1408. don't give up.

  1409. You've got a

  1410. little more to

  1411. go.

  1412. We are running

  1413. after Jesus

  1414. together as a

  1415. church,

  1416. as a pack,

  1417. and we are

  1418. making disciples

  1419. of one another.

  1420. It's hard work.

  1421. We need to

  1422. persevere.

  1423. Here's what's

  1424. going to help

  1425. you persevere

  1426. as you run

  1427. this race.

  1428. this word is

  1429. central to all

  1430. that you do.

  1431. It's your

  1432. directional app.

  1433. It keeps you on

  1434. the way.

  1435. And you pray,

  1436. God, fill me by

  1437. your spirit.

  1438. Give me strength

  1439. to persevere.

  1440. And I pray for

  1441. this person that

  1442. you would help

  1443. them persevere.

  1444. Give them

  1445. strength.

  1446. Prayerful dependence

  1447. on the Holy Spirit.

  1448. And then people are

  1449. God's fellow workers.

  1450. And so if you're

  1451. discouraged, you

  1452. tell somebody else

  1453. so that they can

  1454. minister to you.

  1455. So that they can

  1456. say to you, oh

  1457. brother, I'm there

  1458. to fix your eyes

  1459. on Jesus.

  1460. Let's do this

  1461. together.

  1462. Let's press on

  1463. together.

  1464. Let's not get

  1465. thrown by things

  1466. that aren't that

  1467. important.

  1468. Let's focus

  1469. together on Jesus

  1470. and run the race

  1471. marked out for us

  1472. all the way to

  1473. the end.

  1474. People are messy.

  1475. It's challenging

  1476. and it's hard.

  1477. But we run with

  1478. perseverance together.

  1479. When it boils right

  1480. down to it, this

  1481. fourth ingredient, the

  1482. secret to persevering,

  1483. is fixing your eyes

  1484. on Jesus.

  1485. These are the four

  1486. ingredients to make

  1487. disciples.

  1488. These are God's

  1489. means of grace

  1490. which we use with

  1491. one another and

  1492. others to move

  1493. them to Jesus

  1494. together.

  1495. We're moving people

  1496. towards Jesus.

  1497. Proclaiming the

  1498. word of God,

  1499. prayerful dependence

  1500. on the Holy Spirit.

  1501. People are God's

  1502. fellow workers and

  1503. persevering step by

  1504. step.

1505. We're in it for the

  1506. long haul.

  1507. They're means of

  1508. grace.

  1509. Wouldn't it be

  1510. wonderful if more

1511. and more of us are

  1512. saying to one another,

1513. let's fix our eyes on

  1514. Jesus and let's call

  1515. other people to come

1516. run the race with us,

  1517. to come follow Jesus,

1518. to lay our lives down,

  1519. to learn from Jesus,

  1520. to live for him,

  1521. to become like him

  1522. because we love him.

1523. We know this is God's

  1524. plan for the fullness

  1525. of time.

  1526. making disciples of

  1527. Jesus is way better

  1528. than making chocolate

  1529. chip pancakes.

  1530. Do you know why?

1531. We get to see God

  1532. change people and we

1533. get to be changed in the

  1534. doing.

1535. Will you pray with me?

1536. God in heaven, we're in

  1537. over our heads.

  1538. we want to faithfully

  1539. live according to your

  1540. word.

  1541. We want to be

  1542. empowered by your

  1543. spirit.

  1544. We want to be

  1545. faithfully stewarding

  1546. the gifts you've given

1547. us to the building up of

  1548. your body.

  1549. We want to persevere

1550. step by step in our

1551. own pursuit of you and

  1552. helping others in their

  1553. pursuit of you.

  1554. Father, would you pour

  1555. out your Holy Spirit

  1556. upon us, your people?

1557. Would you do a work

1558. that you alone will be

  1559. glorified for?

  1560. That Christ would be

  1561. exalted in our midst?

  1562. It's for your glory,

  1563. God, we ask.

  1564. In Jesus' name,

  1565. Amen.
