  1. When you're a preacher and you're writing sermons,

  2. you end up leaving a lot of your material on the editing floor, so to speak.

  3. And some of the material you leave on the editing floor,

  4. God intended just for you.

  5. Yesterday when I was preparing,

  6. Ephesians 4 has this quote from Psalm 68.

  7. So I was in Psalm 68,

  8. and later on in verse 19, there's these words,

  9. Blessed be the Lord, for He daily bears us up.

  10. God is our salvation.

  11. That was just the word I needed yesterday and today.

  12. So let me just pray one more time.

  13. God in heaven, we're so grateful that Your grace,

  14. Your spirit is sufficient for the cause, for the challenge.

  15. And You daily bear us up.

  16. That is no labor on Your part.

  17. We gladly receive Your grace and strength.

  18. And now, Father, would You pour Your spirit about on us as we look to Your word.

  19. Would You compel us unto Jesus.

  20. Amen.

  21. I spent a couple summers in Ocean City, New Jersey when I was a college student.

  22. And I had the opportunity to watch the building of boardwalks.

  23. Ocean City is right on the Atlantic coast.

  24. And Ocean City is known for its boardwalk.

  25. Well, what would happen is you bring these big steam-driven pile drivers in,

  26. and they would take this huge pylon, which is basically a giant tree that's been stripped of all its branches,

  27. dipped in tar, and they drive that thing down through layers of sand, layers of soil,

  28. all the way down to the bedrock.

  29. And then when that pylon hits bedrock, they're able to build on it, build a boardwalk on it.

  30. This morning, we're not building boardwalks.

  31. What we're talking about is building a church culture of disciple-making.

  32. In an order for us to build a disciple-making church culture,

  33. certain biblical truths must be driven down in us.

  34. These biblical truths must be driven down past just hearing, past agreement,

  35. past saying, yeah, that sounds really good,

  36. down to the bedrock of conviction,

  37. where we say things like, I've got to do that.

  38. That's God speaking, and I must respond in faith, in action.

  39. That's when it hits bedrock.

  40. We must act together by faith.

  41. This whole revision series is seeking to drive five biblical truths

  42. down to the bedrocks of our beings

  43. so that we could build a culture of disciple-making.

  44. And so, the first...

  45. Where did my thing go?

  46. The first...

  47. The first conviction that I have shared with you is...

  48. I've got to find my pen.

  49. No, this is a different thing.

  50. I just had it.

  51. This is phenomenal.

  52. Hey, thank you, buddy.

  53. It's not going to work.

  54. Well, give it a shot.

  55. Hey, I found it.

  56. Thank you, Jacob.

  57. All right.

  58. So, conviction number one, we talked about weeks ago.

  59. And the conviction one, or these convictions are posed as questions.

  60. Why make disciples?

  61. Do you remember how we answered that?

  62. We make disciples because God has a big plan.

  63. So, the first thing we've got to remember is that there is a triune God,

  64. and He is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and He is reigning over everything.

  65. Remember that?

  66. Ephesians 1, 3 through 14.

  67. And God has this plan for the fullness of time.

  68. We depicted it as a big arrow.

  69. It includes all people, all time.

  70. The triune God is moving everyone to a particular ending point,

  71. and we've depicted that as a big throne.

  72. Matthew 25, where Jesus sits on the throne,

  73. and He separates all nations, all people, the sheep from the goats.

  74. He is the one who is the judge who sits upon the throne,

  75. and let's just put a crown on Him.

  76. Not only is He the judge to come,

  77. but the game changer in salvation history was the cross of Jesus Christ.

  78. God's central to God's plan is the cross of Jesus Christ.

  79. It is where God poured out His grace.

  80. Grace to change people from those who are worshiping anything but God,

  81. and do this radical work in their heart to orient us to God,

  82. to make us worshipers of God.

  83. And so this plan for the fullness of time,

  84. where Jesus is, the cross is at the center of it,

  85. we've talked about this as a people-moving plan,

  86. as a disciple-making plan.

  87. So this is where my technical drawing skills come in really helpful for you all.

  88. So we know of people, we depicted like this,

  89. who were running away from God.

  90. I can't tell you how many hours I've put into practicing that.

  91. And they're running away from God,

  92. and this is the DOD,

  93. not the Department of Defense,

  94. but the domain of darkness.

  95. And those God has created in His image,

  96. corrupted by sin,

  97. are running away from Him.

  98. I used to be in that pack.

  99. Many of you used to be in that pack.

  100. But God did something,

  101. all by His grace,

  102. through the power of the gospel.

  103. He called us to Himself.

  104. He delivered us out of the domain of darkness,

  105. and He made us alive in Jesus.

  106. And so now,

  107. that's kind of scary.

  108. So now we are running together in a pack to Jesus.

  109. And what I've been telling you all along here is that,

  110. according to Revelation chapter 7,

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  111. this is what John was praying for just moments ago.

  112. God is gathering Himself,

  113. people from every tribe, tongue, and nation,

  114. surrounding Him on the throne.

  115. And they are singing His praises.

  116. These are arms raised.

  117. Praising God.

  118. God.

  119. Lifting up their praise to Him.

  120. Salvation belongs to our God.

  121. To the one who sits on the throne.

  122. And to the Lamb.

  123. Salvation and glory,

  124. power and might,

  125. be to our God forever and ever.

  126. And so this right now is happening,

  127. as we speak,

  128. in glory around the throne.

  129. And so,

  130. this big plan,

  131. is a glory plan.

  132. He's flipping people living in the domain of darkness

  133. and making them His disciples.

  134. And what we've been talking about,

  135. disciples are anyone who has experienced God's grace,

  136. and as a result,

  137. they lay down their lives for Jesus.

  138. There's five L's.

  139. Lay down their lives for Jesus

  140. in order to learn from Jesus,

  141. live for Jesus,

  142. become like Jesus,

  143. all because we love Jesus.

  144. That's what disciples are.

  145. Those who are living for Jesus now.

  146. And then,

  147. that's conviction two.

  148. What is a disciple?

  149. And then conviction three is simply the question,

  150. how do you make disciples?

  151. How are disciples made?

  152. And last week,

  153. I told you the four Ps.

  154. Now, I'm not going to quiz you on this.

  155. Just take it in.

  156. The four Ps are this.

  157. How do we make disciples?

  158. Well, we make disciples by

  159. the proclamation of God's Word,

  160. prayerful dependence on the Holy Spirit,

  161. people are God's fellow workers,

  162. and the last P is persevering step by step.

  163. And I told you last week that this week,

  164. I was going to expand on that third P.

  165. People are God's fellow workers.

  166. Which brings me in your bulletin,

  167. if you're following along,

  168. we've just done the review of

  169. convictions one through three.

  170. The claim,

  171. the conviction number four claim is this.

  172. Let me just first ask the question.

  173. How,

  174. who makes disciples?

  175. Disciples?

  176. Here's the claim.

  177. Every Christian must be making disciples.

  178. God has this plan,

  179. where

  180. He is moving people who are under His wrath

  181. to moving people to under His grace.

  182. He's doing it right now,

  183. and we get to join Him in doing that.

  184. He's doing that work right now in our city,

  185. in our state,

  186. country,

  187. and world,

  188. and we get to join Jesus

  189. in what He's doing.

  190. So,

  191. who makes disciples?

  192. We do.

  193. Every Christian must be making disciples,

  194. because every Christian is a disciple.

  195. And if you are a disciple of Jesus,

  196. you're going to be joining Him

  197. and making more disciples of Jesus.

  198. So what this means is,

  199. we are moving people together

  200. towards Jesus.

  201. Both non-Christians and Christians

  202. were always moving people towards Jesus,

  203. either coming into a relationship with Him

  204. or deepening their relationship with Him.

  205. Every member of this church

  206. is a minister.

  207. This is the biblical truth

  208. that was recovered back in the Reformation,

  209. and it's known as the priesthood of all believers.

  210. We're all,

  211. every member,

  212. is a minister in this church.

  213. I had an illustration last week

  214. where we're all members

  215. of the Christ the King Church

  216. ministry staff team.

  217. Every one of us.

  218. So this morning,

  219. I've got six observations for you

  220. from Ephesians 4,

  221. and let me read that for you.

  222. Now, don't fret.

  223. This is not going to be a 90-minute sermon.

  224. I'm going to move through

  225. these six observations pretty quick.

  226. But let me read this passage for you.

  227. Ephesians 4,

  228. 11 through 16.

  229. Robin, would you put it up?

  230. If it's not up, thank you.

  231. And He gave the apostles,

  232. the prophets,

  233. the evangelists,

  234. the He, by the way,

  235. is the risen and ascended Christ.

  236. And He gave the apostles,

  237. the prophets,

  238. the evangelists,

  239. the shepherds,

  240. and teachers

  241. to equip the saints

  242. for the work of ministry,

  243. for building up the body of Christ,

  244. until we all attain

  245. to the unity of the faith

  246. and of the knowledge

  247. of the Son of God,

  248. to mature manhood,

  249. to the measure of the stature

  250. of the fullness of Christ,

  251. so that we may no longer be children

  252. tossed to and fro by the waves

  253. and carried about

  254. by every wound of doctrine,

  255. by human cunning,

  256. by craftiness

  257. and deceitful schemes.

  258. Rather,

  259. speaking the truth in love,

  260. we are to grow up

  261. in every way

  262. into Him

  263. who is the head,

  264. into Christ,

  265. from whom the whole body,

  266. joined and held together,

  267. by every joint

  268. with which it's equipped,

  269. when each part

  270. is working properly,

  271. makes the body grow

  272. so that it builds itself up

  273. in love.

  274. First observation,

  275. each of us called.

  276. Each of us called.

  277. In verse 12,

  278. we read this,

  279. to equip the saints

  280. for the work of ministry.

  281. Saints

  282. is another way

  283. of just describing

  284. Christians,

  285. all Christians.

  286. Every Christian is a saint.

  287. And every Christian

  288. is a disciple of Jesus,

  289. someone who has

  290. responded to God's grace

  291. by laying down their life,

  292. learning from Jesus,

  293. living for Jesus,

  294. becoming like Jesus,

  295. all because we love Jesus.

  296. So saints are Christians,

  297. a.k.a.

  298. disciples of Jesus,

  299. speaking to all of us.

  300. Now,

  301. also in verse 12,

  302. we see,

  303. to equip the saints

  304. for the work of ministry.

  305. What is that?

  306. Well,

  307. you see in the verse,

  308. for building up

  309. of the body of Christ.

  310. So whatever this work

  311. of ministry is,

  312. it builds up

  313. the body of Christ.

  314. And that's Paul's way

  315. of talking about

  316. making disciples.

  317. Don't make

  318. a contradiction

  319. in your mind.

  320. Paul's not talking

  321. about something

  322. other than making disciples.

  323. When he talks about

  324. building up the body,

  325. he's not talking

  326. something other

  327. than making disciples

  328. of Jesus.

  329. What he's doing is,

  330. he's speaking of

  331. making disciples

  332. in terms

  333. of a unified body,

  334. of distinct parts

  335. working together

  336. to move people

  337. towards the head,

  338. Jesus.

  339. And that phrase,

  340. the work of ministry,

  341. is not just

  342. one particular ministry.

  343. ministry.

  344. It's not only saying

  345. this is what ministry

  346. looks like

  347. very narrowly defined.

  348. This is a very broad

  349. category.

  350. It's actually referring

  351. to a variety of ways

  352. individual Christians

  353. use their gifts

  354. to grow together

  355. into Christ.

  356. This is,

  357. what you need to see

  358. here is,

  359. the saints,

  360. all Christians,

  361. are being equipped

  362. for doing

  363. gospel ministry.

  364. ministry.

  365. But there are

  366. a variety of ways

  367. to do gospel ministry.

  368. What I want you

  369. to see here

  370. is that each

  371. and every Christian

  372. is called

  373. to be a minister

  374. in and through

  375. the church.

  376. Last week,

  377. I used this

  378. illustration.

  379. Imagine going to

  380. the Christ the King

  381. Church website.

  382. You go to the menu,

  383. and in the menu,

  384. there is this tab

  385. that says

  386. ministry staff.

  387. You click on that,

  388. and before you,

  389. our page after page

  390. of every member

  391. and regular attender

  392. of Christ the King

  393. Church,

  394. because we are

  395. the ministry staff

  396. of this church.

  397. We're the ones.

  398. You're the ones

  399. who do the ministry.

  400. So,

  401. here's the application.

  402. Do you see yourself

  403. as primarily

  404. a recipient

  405. of the ministry

  406. of this church,

  407. or primarily

  408. as a participant

  409. in the ministry

  410. of this church?

  411. Do you take

  412. primarily,

  413. or do you give

  414. primarily?

  415. Biblically speaking,

  416. it's actually both.

  417. Every member

  418. in this church

  419. receives grace

  420. from other brothers

  421. and sisters,

  422. and gives grace

  423. to other brothers

  424. and sisters.

  425. That's the way

  426. it's designed.

  427. But are you,

  428. do you pull one way

  429. or the other?

  430. The call is to do both.

  431. Remember the ad campaign

  432. for milk,

  433. milk it does,

  434. milk it does,

  435. the body good.

  436. Grace it does,

  437. grace does

  438. Christ's body good.

  439. And every member

  440. of this church

  441. has grace to give

  442. and grace to benefit from.

  443. Each of us called.

  444. The second observation

  445. I want you to see

  446. is that each of us

  447. is gifted.

  448. If you're in Ephesians 4,

  449. look at verse 7.

  450. But grace was given

  451. to each one of us

  452. according to the measure

  453. of Christ's gift.

  454. In 1 Corinthians 12

  455. and in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  456. the one who gives

  457. particular gifts

  458. to individual Christians

  459. is actually the Holy Spirit.

  460. Here,

  461. it is the risen,

  462. ascended Jesus.

  463. Which means

  464. the triune God

  465. is involved

  466. with giving gifts

  467. to individual Christians.

  468. Grace was given

  469. to each one of us

  470. according to the measure

  471. of Christ's gift.

  472. Which means this,

  473. our risen,

  474. and ascended Lord Jesus

  475. decided what gift

  476. and how much

  477. of that,

  478. what measure

  479. of that gift

  480. He would give you

  481. and He would give me.

  482. Which means

  483. there's no need

  484. for gift envy

  485. in the church.

  486. If you're envying

  487. somebody else's gift,

  488. you actually have

  489. an issue

  490. with Jesus'

  491. decision making.

  492. but what is clear

  493. from all of these passages

  494. is that

  495. a grace gift

  496. is given to

  497. each and every Christian

  498. and each gift

  499. is intended

  500. to build the church.

  501. Imagine with me

  502. a business woman

  503. who returns

  504. from an international

  505. business trip

  506. from Zurich,

  507. Switzerland.

  508. And she arrives

  509. and gives boxes

  510. of Swiss chocolates

  511. to each of her

  512. children and husband.

  513. To one of

  514. her family members,

  515. it's Swiss chocolate

  516. caramels.

  517. To another,

  518. it's Swiss chocolate

  519. nut clusters.

  520. To another,

  521. it's another kind

  522. of Swiss chocolate

  523. truffle.

  524. And her intention

  525. in giving these boxes

  526. of chocolate

  527. to each of her

  528. family members

  529. is not that

  530. each member

  531. would hoard

  532. the box,

  533. but to enjoy

  534. what's in the box

  535. and share it

  536. with the rest

  537. of her family.

  538. The gifts

  539. she gives

  540. tended to share

  541. with everybody else.

  542. The gifts

  543. our risen Christ

  544. gives to each

  545. of us,

  546. we're not to

  547. hoard them,

  548. we're to share them,

  549. we're to put them

  550. in play.

  551. And so what happens

  552. is,

  553. if you were in that

  554. business woman's

  555. family,

  556. you'd be,

  557. oh,

  558. thank you,

  559. and Swiss chocolate

  560. is great.

  561. for us,

  562. it's,

  563. Jesus,

  564. thank you for this

  565. gift you've given

  566. me and given her

  567. and given him.

  568. All glory to your

  569. name.

  570. Which raises the

  571. question,

  572. I'm guessing,

  573. how has God

  574. gifted you?

  575. What is the gift

  576. he's given you?

  577. Well,

  578. let me just give you,

  579. there's a few spots

  580. in your Bibles

  581. in which the

  582. Apostle Paul

  583. or the Apostle Peter

  584. gives us some

  585. lists of gifts.

  586. They're not exhaustive,

  587. but helpful to know.

  588. Let me read you a

  589. couple.

  590. This is Romans 12

    Romans 12:4–8

  591. verses 4 through

  592. 8.

  593. For as in one body

  594. we have many gifts

  595. and the members

  596. do not all have

  597. the same function.

  598. Did I just get

  599. lost?

  600. Is this on now?

  601. Is anything on?

  602. Thank you.

  603. I'm very aware

  604. that there are

  605. certain powers

  606. that don't want

  607. you to hear

  608. what I'm saying.

  609. I'm not kidding.

  610. For as in one body

  611. we have many members

  612. and the members

  613. do not all

  614. have the same function.

  615. So we,

  616. though many,

  617. are one body

  618. in Christ

  619. and individually

  620. members one of another.

  621. Having gifts

  622. that differ

  623. according to the grace

  624. given to us,

  625. let us use them

  626. if prophecy

  627. in proportion

  628. to our faith.

  629. If service

  630. in our serving,

  631. the one who teaches

  632. in his teaching,

  633. the one who exhorts

  634. in his exhortation,

  635. the one who contributes

  636. in generosity,

  637. the one who leads

  638. with zeal,

  639. the one who does

  640. acts of mercy

  641. with cheerfulness.

  642. There's a similar list

  643. in 1 Corinthians 12.

  644. There's a similar list

  645. in 1 Peter 4

    1 Peter 4:10

  646. verses 10 through,

  647. I believe it's 10 and 11.

  648. I'm not going to read that.

  649. Go there.

  650. Check it out.

  651. The point is

  652. there's a variety

  653. of gifts

  654. that the risen Christ

  655. gives us

  656. for the building up

  657. of the body

  658. and he has given

  659. you one.

  660. How do you figure it out?

  661. I'll ask a couple questions.

  662. Where do you gravitate?

  663. What do you gravitate to

  664. in the church,

  665. in the ministry

  666. of the church

  667. that just,

  668. that gives you juice

  669. that you like doing it?

  670. What is it?

  671. Is it logistics?

  672. Organizing?

  673. Administrating?

  674. Is it sharing the gospel

  675. with non-Christians?

  676. Teaching?

  677. Leading?

  678. Pay attention

  679. to those burdens.

  680. Or,

  681. you can be listening

  682. to what other people

  683. are saying.

  684. Wow,

  685. you are really good

  686. at that.

  687. Man,

  688. when you're

  689. in that zone

  690. serving that way,

  691. I'm encouraged

  692. by that.

  693. That has an effect.

  694. The sweet spot

  695. of your ministry

  696. is when there is

  697. a need in the church

  698. and it intersects

  699. your gift.

  700. That intersection

  701. is the sweet spot

  702. of your ministry

  703. and you want to find it.

  704. Ask God to direct you.

  705. Ask others for help.

  706. The point is

  707. that each one of us

  708. has been given

  709. an individual gift

  710. not to hoard

  711. but to put into play

  712. so that everybody benefits.

  713. Each of us gifted.

  714. The third observation

  715. is each of us speaking.

  716. we see this in verse 15.

  717. Is it enough

  718. to be using your gifts?

  719. Let's say you have

  720. a gift of service.

  721. Is it enough

  722. to serve

  723. or is there more?

  724. Well,

  725. verse 15

  726. seems to be pointing

  727. to more.

  728. Verse 15 says,

  729. rather,

  730. speaking the truth

  731. in love,

  732. we are to grow up

  733. in every way

  734. into Him

  735. who is the head

  736. into Christ.

  737. He's still speaking

  738. to every Christian

  739. in the church.

  740. Here's how I know that.

  741. Look down at verse 25.

  742. Therefore,

  743. having put away falsehood,

  744. let each one of you

  745. speak the truth

  746. with his neighbor.

  747. We were members

  748. one of another.

  749. This is intended

  750. for every member

  751. of the church

  752. that you're to be

  753. speaking the truth

  754. in love

  755. to one another.

  756. So in addition

  757. to using your gift,

  758. you speak the truth

  759. in love

  760. to one another.

  761. The truth

  762. is a reference

  763. to the Bible.

  764. The content

  765. of this book.

  766. The truth

  767. of how God

  768. has revealed Himself

  769. in the person

  770. of Jesus Christ.

  771. And notice,

  772. it's speaking

  773. the truth.

  774. It is communication

  775. of this.

  776. You can text it.

  777. You can put it

  778. on Twitter.

  779. You can use it

  780. on Facebook.

  781. You can call people,

  782. FaceTime people,

  783. but there's no substitute

  784. to speaking

  785. the truth in love

  786. in someone else's presence.

  787. That's where the money,

  788. that's the gold

  789. right there.

  790. Speaking the truth

  791. in love

  792. captures that first P

  793. of how we make disciples.

  794. The proclamation

  795. of God's Word.

  796. That this book

  797. is every word

  798. originated in the mind

  799. of God

  800. and it is profitable.

  801. It equips people

  802. to follow Jesus.

  803. And we're to speak

  804. the truth in love.

  805. Did you see that?

  806. We don't pull the pin

  807. on a truth grenade

  808. and lob it in

  809. and run.

  810. We speak the truth

  811. in love,

  812. which means

  813. we speak truth

  814. to people

  815. for their greatest good.

  816. Now we've got to

  817. ask the question,

  818. what is that greatest good?

  819. Is it for people's comfort?

  820. It's right there

  821. in the text.

  822. Look at verse 15 again.

  823. Rather speaking

  824. the truth in love,

  825. we are to grow up

  826. in every way

  827. into Him

  828. who is the head

  829. into Christ.

  830. We speak the truth

  831. in love to one another

  832. unto Jesus.

  833. Moving people

  834. towards Jesus our head.

  835. That's the goal.

  836. That's how we love people.

  837. So here's what this means.

  838. Whether you're serving

  839. as a King's Kids

  840. teacher or helper,

  841. or a life group leader,

  842. or a life group member,

  843. a vocalist,

  844. an instrumentalist,

  845. a slide tech,

  846. a sound tech,

  847. whether you are

  848. a King's Place mentor,

  849. you're a spouse,

  850. you're a Christian parent,

  851. your gift gives you

  852. an opportunity

  853. to speak the truth

  854. in love,

  855. to move people

  856. towards Jesus.

  857. Imagine two guys

  858. with the gift of service

  859. running cable

  860. in this building

  861. to expand

  862. our Wi-Fi network.

  863. They're laboring

  864. next to each other

  865. and one of them

  866. starts to complain.

  867. One of them

  868. starts to express

  869. frustration

  870. about someone else

  871. in the church.

  872. It's turning to gossip.

  873. So the other brother says,

  874. hey, have you spoken

  875. your frustration

  876. to that person?

  877. Because the other brother

  878. who's asking that question

  879. is wanting to live

  880. in Ephesians 4,

  881. let's just put our

  882. finger on it,

  883. verse 3,

  884. eager to maintain

  885. the unity of the Spirit

  886. and the bond of peace.

  887. Or,

  888. Matthew 18,

  889. 15,

  890. where Jesus says

  891. to all of us,

  892. if you have

  893. an issue

  894. with another brother,

  895. you go to him.

  896. Make your offense

  897. known.

  898. Work it out.

  899. That,

  900. here we are,

  901. two guys

  902. using their gift,

  903. but speaking

  904. the truth

  905. in love

  906. to one another.

  907. Do you see

  908. how this is working?

  909. Imagine

  910. King's Place team,

  911. Wednesday afternoon

  912. mentoring program.

  913. I don't have anybody

  914. in particular mind

  915. with this example.

  916. A sister texts

  917. one of the other people

  918. on the team.

  919. I don't want to come,

  920. I'm so discouraged.

  921. That other person

  922. on the team says,

  923. you come.

  924. This sister shows up.

  925. She's very honest.

  926. They've got to be

  927. mentoring these

  928. wonderful children

  929. in just minutes,

  930. right?

  931. This,

  932. this sister

  933. who's so discouraged

  934. said,

  935. I should not be here.

  936. I just yelled

  937. at my seven-year-old

  938. for one minute

  939. straight.

  940. I have no business

  941. being here.

  942. to which her team

  943. then says to her,

  944. well,

  945. if that's

  946. the standard,

  947. none of us

  948. should be here.

  949. Grace freely given,

  950. sister.

  951. You're in the spot

  952. you need to be.

  953. Jesus has forgiven

  954. that too.

  955. We serve

  956. out of fullness

  957. of grace.

  958. So whether that's

  959. on a ministry team,

  960. do you see,

  961. you're going to be

  962. mentoring people,

  963. you're going to be

  964. doing different

  965. ministries with your

  966. gift,

  967. but it affords you

  968. a certain kind

  969. of opportunity

  970. to speak the truth

  971. in love.

  972. Life groups,

  973. dinners together,

  974. in addition to

  975. using your gifts,

  976. we are all

  977. to be speaking

  978. the truth

  979. in love

  980. to one another

  981. unto Jesus.

  982. That's the third

  983. observation.

  984. Here's the fourth.

  985. Each of us

  986. equipped

  987. this raises

  988. an interesting

  989. question.

  990. You might be

  991. saying,

  992. okay,

  993. I buy it.

  994. I'm supposed

  995. to be speaking

  996. the truth

  997. in love,

  998. okay,

  999. but what do I

  1000. say?

  1001. What do I say

  1002. when someone's

  1003. freaking out?

  1004. I don't want

  1005. to mislead them.

  1006. Well,

  1007. in verses 11

  1008. and 12,

  1009. we see this

  1010. very important

  1011. relationship.

  1012. He gave the

  1013. apostles,

  1014. the prophets,

  1015. the evangelists,

  1016. the shepherds,

  1017. and teachers

  1018. to equip the

  1019. saints for the

  1020. work of ministry.

  1021. It's a relationship.

  1022. God gives

  1023. leadership gifts

  1024. to equip the

  1025. saints for the

  1026. works of ministry.

  1027. So here's what

  1028. this means.

  1029. This morning,

  1030. I am seeking

  1031. to equip you

  1032. with God's

  1033. Word for

  1034. works of

  1035. ministry.

  1036. How,

  1037. you may ask,

  1038. well,

  1039. I haven't given

  1040. you a ministry

  1041. skill set.

  1042. I'm trying to

  1043. form in your

  1044. minds a

  1045. ministry

  1046. mindset.

  1047. Equip you

  1048. in the way

  1049. you think

  1050. about yourself.

  1051. That you,

  1052. Christian,

  1053. are a minister

  1054. of Jesus Christ

  1055. in this church.

  1056. And I'm calling

  1057. you to believe

  1058. it.

  1059. Because God

  1060. says it.

  1061. And to live

  1062. that,

  1063. you are a

  1064. gifted and

  1065. called minister

  1066. of the

  1067. ascended Christ

  1068. to make

  1069. disciples as

  1070. part of this

  1071. church.

  1072. And my job

  1073. is to equip

  1074. you to

  1075. faithfully

  1076. minister out

  1077. of that.

  1078. This word

  1079. equip is

  1080. part of a

  1081. family of

  1082. words in the

  1083. New Testament.

  1084. And basically

  1085. it means to

  1086. outfit.

  1087. It was used

  1088. to describe

  1089. outfitting

  1090. boats that

  1091. in the

  1092. first century

  1093. would travel

  1094. rivers.

  1095. You give

  1096. everything that

  1097. boat team

  1098. needs in

  1099. order to

  1100. survive going

  1101. down the

  1102. river or

  1103. up river.

  1104. Equipping

  1105. means giving

  1106. you what you

  1107. need to be

  1108. faithful to

  1109. Jesus.

  1110. So in

  1111. light of that,

  1112. I just want

  1113. to help you

  1114. think about

  1115. Sunday mornings

  1116. for a second.

  1117. imagine Sunday

  1118. morning as

  1119. the flagship

  1120. disciple making

  1121. event of the

  1122. week.

  1123. The moment we

  1124. all come

  1125. together to

  1126. worship God,

  1127. to hear from

  1128. his words,

  1129. and to be

  1130. spurred on to

  1131. follow Jesus and

  1132. make disciples of

  1133. all nations.

  1134. There's a lot of

  1135. equipping with

  1136. God's word that

  1137. happens on a

  1138. Sunday morning.

  1139. Imagine the

  1140. informal conversations

  1141. before the service

  1142. and after the

  1143. service and how

  1144. those are ripe

  1145. opportunities to

  1146. move people towards

  1147. Jesus with his

  1148. word.

  1149. What happens with

  1150. King's kids,

  1151. right now we

  1152. have a bunch of

  1153. children being

  1154. taught a lesson.

  1155. Yes, that is

  1156. speaking the truth

  1157. in love.

  1158. But also, when

  1159. those kids get

  1160. squirrely, those

  1161. teachers and

  1162. helpers have an

  1163. opportunity to

  1164. speak the truth

  1165. in love and

  1166. help these

  1167. children.

  1168. Love one

  1169. another.

  1170. Grow in

  1171. self-control.

  1172. Of course, our

  1173. singing, it's a

  1174. kind of speaking

  1175. the truth and

  1176. love to one

  1177. another.

  1178. Colossians 3.16

  1179. talks about the

  1180. word of Christ

  1181. dwelling richly

  1182. among us through

  1183. the hymns and

  1184. spiritual songs that

  1185. we sing.

  1186. It forms us.

  1187. It will be in

  1188. your mind on

  1189. your deathbed

  1190. someday.

  1191. It equips you.

  1192. preaching, it

  1193. equips you with

  1194. sound doctrine so

  1195. you don't go the

  1196. way of Ephesians

  1197. 4.14.

  1198. So you're not

  1199. tossed to and

  1200. fro by the

  1201. waves of false

  1202. doctrine.

  1203. Ministry mindset,

  1204. ministry skill set.

  1205. I don't have

  1206. enough time this

  1207. morning, but I

  1208. want to invite you

  1209. to something

  1210. immediately after

  1211. the service.

  1212. There's this

  1213. passage in 1

  1214. Thessalonians 5.14.

  1215. It is a crash

  1216. course in how to

  1217. wisely apply God's

  1218. word to someone's

  1219. life.

  1220. Just one verse.

  1221. So after the

  1222. service we dismiss,

  1223. come on down, I'll

  1224. give you a crash

  1225. course in it.

  1226. It'll be five

  1227. minutes.

  1228. You'll walk away

  1229. with a sense of,

  1230. oh, that's helpful.

  1231. our job as

  1232. pastors and

  1233. elders is to

  1234. equip the saints

  1235. for works of

  1236. service and to

  1237. do that well.

  1238. Because each of

  1239. you has been

  1240. called to be a

  1241. minister of the

  1242. gospel.

  1243. Okay, so called,

  1244. gifted, speaking,

  1245. equipped, fifth

  1246. observation, each

  1247. of us positioned.

  1248. It's right there

  1249. in the text,

  1250. verse 16.

  1251. From whom the

  1252. whole body,

  1253. joined and held

  1254. together by every

  1255. joint with which

  1256. it is equipped,

  1257. when each part is

  1258. working properly,

  1259. makes the body

  1260. grow so that it

  1261. builds itself up

  1262. in love.

  1263. Have you ever

  1264. had a body part

  1265. dislocate?

  1266. Oh, it's not

  1267. fun.

  1268. It's painful.

  1269. It calls for all

  1270. your attention.

  1271. You're unable to

  1272. do what you

  1273. normally do.

  1274. Paul is painting

  1275. this picture of

  1276. the church as a

  1277. healthy, functioning

  1278. body with all of

  1279. its members united

  1280. together, working

  1281. together.

  1282. When someone's

  1283. dislocated, it

  1284. affects the supply

  1285. of grace running

  1286. through the body.

  1287. That phrase, from

  1288. whom the whole body

  1289. joined and held

  1290. together, with which

  1291. it is equipped, every

  1292. joint with which it

  1293. is equipped, it's a

  1294. picture of this

  1295. connectivity between

  1296. Christians in which

  1297. God uses that

  1298. connectivity, that

  1299. positioning and

  1300. proximity to pour out

  1301. His grace on

  1302. people.

  1303. Some scholars think

  1304. that's talking about

  1305. leaders.

  1306. Other scholars think

  1307. that's a reference to

  1308. all the saints.

  1309. Whatever the case may

  1310. be, it's about God's

  1311. grace flowing through

  1312. the body.

1313. And we all need to be

  1314. in right position with

  1315. one another.

  1316. Not disjointed, not

  1317. dislocated, but

  1318. unified.

  1319. What holds together a

  1320. body of Christ?

  1321. What does that?

1322. In verse 15, we see

  1323. it.

  1324. Rather, speaking the

  1325. truth in love, we're

1326. to grow up in every

1327. way into Him who is

  1328. the head.

1329. Look at the end of

  1330. verse 16.

1331. Makes the body grow so

  1332. that it builds itself

  1333. up in love.

  1334. That's the whole point

  1335. of Ephesians 4, 1

  1336. through 6.

  1337. United in love unto

  1338. Jesus.

  1339. Have you ever seen

  1340. someone dislocate a

  1341. shoulder and then

  1342. watched the process of

1343. it being set back in?

  1344. It's kind of painful

  1345. to watch.

  1346. But for that person

  1347. who has a

  1348. dislocated shoulder,

  1349. whatever pain it takes

  1350. to get it reset,

  1351. the result is

  1352. eventual healing and

  1353. full function of the

  1354. body.

  1355. Here's the question.

  1356. Are you somehow

  1357. disjointed from the

  1358. body?

  1359. In general, or from

  1360. another Christian in

  1361. particular, are you

  1362. disconnected?

  1363. And what needs to

1364. happen for you to be

  1365. set back into place

1366. so that the grace of

  1367. our Lord Jesus, our

  1368. head, flows down

  1369. through us to all

  1370. body parts?

1371. What is it going to

  1372. take?

  1373. Maybe it means

  1374. re-engaging in our

  1375. life together as a

  1376. church in person.

  1377. Maybe it means getting

  1378. involved with a life

  1379. group finally.

  1380. Maybe it means getting

  1381. onto a ministry team.

  1382. Maybe it means taking

  1383. some steps of faith

  1384. and courage and

  1385. raising topics with

  1386. other brothers and

  1387. sisters.

1388. That may not be easy

  1389. to talk about.

  1390. If you are disjointed

  1391. from the body, not

  1392. only does it affect

  1393. the body, we're

  1394. missing God using

  1395. your gift grace in

  1396. our life.

  1397. It's affecting you.

  1398. You're lacking God's

  1399. grace.

  1400. You don't need to

  1401. remain disconnected

  1402. and distant.

  1403. Get connected.

  1404. Get close.

  1405. It's necessary to

  1406. your calling to be

  1407. part of building up

  1408. this particular body.

  1409. That's the fifth

  1410. observation.

  1411. Here's the sixth, and

  1412. this is brief.

  1413. All of us growing.

  1414. It's the result.

  1415. It's the result of

  1416. knowing that you're

  1417. called.

  1418. It's the result of

  1419. knowing that you're

  1420. gifted.

  1421. It's the result of

  1422. speaking the truth in

  1423. love, of being equipped

  1424. to do that.

  1425. It's the result of

  1426. being rightly, humbly

  1427. positioned to one

  1428. another in this

  1429. church.

  1430. The result is the

  1431. body builds itself up

  1432. in love.

  1433. You have a particular

  1434. gift, brother and

  1435. sister, that Jesus

  1436. himself has given

  1437. you, and while you

  1438. are using that gift

  1439. in close proximity to

  1440. other Christians, you

1441. get to speak the truth

  1442. in love, moving people

  1443. towards Jesus.

  1444. And when we are

  1445. rightly connected to

  1446. each other in our

  1447. head, Jesus, the grace

  1448. falls down.

1449. It fills us with the

  1450. fullness of God.

  1451. It grows us.

  1452. We learn from him.

  1453. We live for him.

  1454. We become like him

  1455. because we love him.

  1456. Grace it does.

1457. Grace it does the body

  1458. good.

  1459. Grace it does.

1460. Grace it does this body

  1461. good.

  1462. And that includes

  1463. moving non-Christians

1464. into our body when they

  1465. believe on the Lord

  1466. Jesus Christ.

  1467. We add members.

  1468. It's all about moving

  1469. people towards Jesus, our

  1470. head.

  1471. We grow.

  1472. He gets the glory.

  1473. So let me conclude.

  1474. Who makes disciples,

  1475. brothers and sisters?

  1476. Every Christian, all of

  1477. us, must be making

  1478. disciples.

1479. In order for our church

  1480. culture to become a

  1481. disciple-making church

  1482. culture, this biblical

  1483. truth that we're talking

  1484. about from Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

1485. chapter 4 must be driven

1486. down to the bedrock of

  1487. your being.

  1488. You must be thoroughly

  1489. convinced of this.

1490. And when we are all

  1491. convinced of this, the

  1492. grace flows in greater

  1493. fullness into greater

  1494. effect.

  1495. You've been called into

  1496. ministry, brother and

  1497. sister.

  1498. You're an essential member

1499. of the Christ the King

  1500. Church ministry staff.

1501. And when we act on this

  1502. in faith, every member

  1503. becomes a disciple-maker.

1504. The body builds itself in

  1505. love.

1506. Grace it does the body

  1507. good.

  1508. Next week, where are

  1509. disciples made?

  1510. Let's pray.

  1511. Lord Jesus, we're so

  1512. grateful that you would

1513. call each of us out of

  1514. the domain of darkness

1515. and transfer us into the

  1516. kingdom of light, the

  1517. kingdom of the beloved

  1518. Son.

1519. You made us alive with

  1520. Christ, Father.

1521. You've called us to be

  1522. disciples.

1523. God, would you convince us

1524. of what you say to be

1525. true of us so that we

1526. can live in fullness and

1527. that we can see this body

1528. grow and that we do that

  1529. together.

1530. Lord, would you bring peace

  1531. and unity?

1532. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1533. Amen.

  1534. Amen.

  1535. Amen.

  1536. Amen.

  1537. Amen.

  1538. Amen.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. Amen.

  1543. Amen.

  1544. Amen.

  1545. Amen.

  1546. Amen.

  1547. Amen.
