  1. Would you open up your Bibles now

  2. and would you read with me

  3. Matthew chapter 28?

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  4. Robin's going to put it up on the screen behind me

  5. if she hasn't already.

  6. Children, rooted.

  7. Children, please go to your King's Kids classes.

  8. Thank you for getting up and leaving first to remind me.

  9. You need to know your cues.

  10. This is our risen Lord Jesus speaking.

  11. Would you give Him your full attention?

  12. And Jesus came and said to them,

  13. all authority in heaven and on earth

  14. has been given to me.

  15. Go, therefore.

  16. And make disciples of all nations,

  17. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  18. and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  19. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  20. And behold,

  21. I am with you

  22. always

  23. to the end of the age.

  24. May God bless the reading of His Word.

  25. If I polled all of you right now

  26. and asked you,

  27. do you believe in the Great Commission?

  28. Yes or no?

  29. I'm guessing most everybody in the room would say,

  30. yes,

  31. I believe

  32. that Jesus has sent His disciples

  33. to go to the nations and make disciples.

  34. But we all know there's this gap

  35. between what we profess

  36. and what we practice.

  37. So here's the question.

  38. This is to put some dissonance in you.

  39. Why are there so many people

  40. who profess

  41. to be disciples of Jesus,

  42. who agree with the Great Commission,

  43. and yet they are not actively

  44. carrying out the Great Commission?

  45. They're not moving people towards Jesus.

  46. Why is it

  47. that people aren't moving people

  48. towards Jesus very purposely?

  49. Now why is that?

  50. The elders of Christ the King Church

  51. have spent over a year

  52. wrestling with this question.

  53. And first with regard to ourselves.

  54. This book that we've been referencing a lot,

  55. The Vine Project,

  56. phase two

  57. is to evaluate yourself

  58. in light of all of these convictions

  59. that we've been walking through.

  60. And each and every one of our elders

  61. has evaluated themselves

  62. and seen the gap

  63. between our profession and our practice.

  64. Phase two of The Vine Project

  65. is evaluating the church.

  66. We've seen a gap

  67. between our profession

  68. of the Great Commission

  69. and the practice

  70. of the Great Commission.

  71. There's a disconnect.

  72. There's a disconnect

  73. between what we say is true

  74. and living out that truth.

  75. There's a disconnect

  76. between saying we believe

  77. in these words of Jesus

  78. and actually obeying them.

  79. It's the difference

  80. that I've been trying to describe

  81. as the difference

  82. between a biblical affirmation,

  83. yes that's true,

  84. and a biblical conviction.

  85. I must act on that truth.

  86. Last week I shared the story

  87. of watching in Ocean City

  88. as a young man

  89. the building of a boardwalk,

  90. of a sledgehammer

  91. driving down a wood pylon

  92. through the sand

  93. all the way down to bedrock.

  94. And multiple of these pylons

  95. were driven down

  96. and there's this interconnected

  97. boardwalk built on top.

  98. Brothers and sisters,

  99. we're not building a boardwalk.

  100. We're building a church culture

  101. of disciple making.

  102. And that culture

  103. is built upon

  104. these biblical convictions

  105. that we've been working through.

  106. Conviction one,

  107. why make disciples?

  108. And for that conviction,

  109. we have a diagram.

  110. Are you with me?

  111. Is that up?

  112. Remember this diagram?

  113. Conviction one,

  114. why make disciples?

  115. There is first and foremost

  116. the triune God,

  117. Father, Son, Holy Spirit

  118. who is reigning over all things.

  119. And then,

  120. there is this big plan

  121. for the fullness of time.

  122. And at the end of that plan,

  123. all things,

  124. God is moving all things

  125. to that day

  126. where Jesus sits upon His throne.

  127. And He's going to judge

  128. all people everywhere.

  129. That's Matthew 25.

  130. At the center of this plan,

  131. remember this is a Christocentric plan,

  132. is the cross.

  133. And it's this cross

  134. through which God

  135. is pouring out grace

  136. upon sinners.

  137. This plan

  138. is not just Christocentric,

  139. it's a people-moving plan.

  140. Do you remember this?

  141. We've got people,

  142. oh man,

  143. I'm getting bad.

  144. We've got people

  145. living in the DOD,

  146. not the Department of Defense,

  147. the domain of darkness,

  148. running away from God.

  149. And God,

  150. in His mercy

  151. and His grace,

  152. is calling people

  153. and flipping them

  154. by His grace,

  155. God's power to save

  156. through the cross of Jesus.

  157. And He's flipping people

  158. and giving them new life.

  159. And now they run together

  160. for Jesus.

  161. this is the

  162. kingdom of light.

  163. It's a people-moving plan.

  164. It's a disciple-making plan.

  165. And we also know

  166. that God,

  167. through this plan,

  168. is making worshipers

  169. all around the throne

  170. from every tribe,

  171. tongue,

  172. and nation

  173. in the world.

  174. And He's doing that right now.

  175. He's doing it right now.

  176. People praising Him,

  177. surrounding Him in glory.

  178. It starts even now

  179. in us.

  180. This group of people

  181. right here,

  182. that's us.

  183. Those who've been

  184. called by God's grace

  185. to follow Jesus,

  186. to lay down

  187. our lives daily,

  188. to learn from Jesus,

  189. to live for Jesus,

  190. to become like Jesus

  191. because we love Him.

  192. So conviction number one,

  193. why make disciples?

  194. God's got a huge plan.

  195. And He's carrying it right now

  196. all around the world.

  197. and He's flipping those

  198. who are running away from Him

  199. and transferring from

  200. the dominion of darkness

  201. and transferring them

  202. into the kingdom

  203. of His beloved Son.

  204. That's conviction one.

  205. We get to join God

  206. in His work.

  207. Conviction two,

  208. what is a disciple?

  209. Mark chapter eight.

  210. Jesus says,

  211. if anyone would come after me,

  212. He must,

  213. He must

  214. lay down His life,

  215. take up His cross,

  216. and follow me.

  217. We lay down our lives

  218. in order to learn from,

  219. live for,

  220. become like Jesus

  221. all because we love Him.

  222. Conviction three,

  223. how do we make disciples?

  224. That's the four Ps.

  225. The proclamation of God's Word,

  226. the prayerful dependence

  227. on the Holy Spirit,

  228. people are God's fellow workers,

  229. we're all in this together,

  230. your conversion

  231. was your commissioning,

  232. as well as the final P,

  233. perseverance step by step.

  234. Hey, making disciples

  235. is hard work.

  236. It takes time and effort,

  237. long suffering.

  238. Conviction four is,

  239. who makes disciples?

  240. I pointed you to Ephesians 4,

  241. 11 through 16.

  242. We do.

  243. Remember,

  244. going to the Christ the King Church

  245. website,

  246. you click on the

  247. Christ the King Church

  248. ministry staff,

  249. and it's person after person,

  250. the regular attenders

  251. and members of this church.

  252. Y'all are God's ministry staff

  253. here at Christ the King Church.

  254. We are equipping the saints

  255. for the works of ministry.

  256. Conviction five,

  257. where are disciples made?

  258. That's the last conviction.

  259. That's the last conviction

  260. of this series

  261. at the heart

  262. of the revision series.

  263. It's where are disciples made?

  264. And if you're following along

  265. in your notes

  266. on your bulletin,

  267. we're now at

  268. revision conviction five,

  269. the claim.

  270. Here it is.

  271. It's nine words.

  272. Wherever there are disciples,

  273. there must be disciple making.

  274. Wherever there are disciples,

  275. there must be disciple making.

  276. Wherever there is the church,

  277. a community of disciples,

  278. there must be moving people

  279. towards Jesus,

  280. non-Christians and Christians alike.

  281. And so this morning,

  282. I want to show you

  283. the four greats

  284. coming out of the Great Commission

  285. in Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  286. 18 through 20.

  287. So if you now would look back

  288. to Matthew 28,

  289. our review is over.

  290. Let's get into God's Word

  291. so that we can see

  292. where disciples are to be made.

  293. wherever there are disciples,

  294. there must be disciple making.

  295. Number one,

  296. the first great,

  297. His great authority over us.

  298. We see this in chapter 28,

  299. 18,

  300. all authority in heaven and earth

  301. has been given to me.

  302. Those are the words of Jesus.

  303. After Jesus has been raised

  304. from the dead,

  305. He has gathered His disciples

  306. to speak His final words

  307. before His ascension.

  308. We all know the importance

  309. of final words, right?

  310. Central to these final words

  311. is a command in verse 19.

  312. It's the command,

  313. make disciples.

  314. That's the heartbeat

  315. of the Great Commission.

  316. But here in verse 18,

  317. Jesus prefaces that command

  318. with something that's very important.

  319. It's an appeal to His authority.

  320. What is authority?

  321. Well, this is a little roughshod,

  322. but authority is the right

  323. to tell you what to do

  324. and expect you to obey it.

  325. That's what authority is.

  326. The right to require something

  327. of your life.

  328. And Jesus has all authority

  329. in heaven and earth.

  330. He can require all of your life.

  331. Our government has the authority

  332. and right to require its citizens

  333. to pay taxes

  334. and penalize you if you don't.

  335. Our city's police officers

  336. have the right to pull you over

  337. if you're speeding

  338. and write a ticket for you.

  339. If you're an employee,

  340. your employer has the right

  341. to require job performance of you

  342. and pay you accordingly.

  343. Growing up,

  344. our parents had the right

  345. to tell us to make our beds,

  346. to bathe,

  347. to finish our vegetables,

  348. to be considerate of our siblings

  349. and spank us if we didn't.

  350. In all of these examples,

  351. it's a limited authority.

  352. When you look at the scope

  353. of Jesus' authority,

  354. all authority in heaven

  355. and on earth

  356. has been given to me.

  357. What you need to realize,

  358. He has full and complete authority

  359. over all of creation.

  360. He has the right to require

  361. His will to be done

  362. from everyone and everything.

  363. I don't think there's a better picture

  364. of His authority

  365. than the throne.

  366. In Matthew chapter 25,

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  367. Jesus pictures Himself

  368. as this King on the throne

  369. at the end of time

  370. on that day

  371. and all of His angels

  372. assemble before Him

  373. every person that has ever lived

  374. on the face of the earth

  375. and He judges them

  376. and separates them

  377. as the sheep from the goat.

  378. Do you know what that's a picture of?

  379. Authority.

  380. authority.

  381. He has the right

  382. to judge all.

  383. All will give an account to Him.

  384. In 2 Corinthians 5.10,

  385. it's true of us Christians.

  386. Paul says,

  387. For we must all appear

  388. before the judgment seat of Christ

  389. so that each one

  390. may receive what is due

  391. for what he has done in the body,

  392. whether good or evil.

  393. When Jesus prefaces a command

  394. with this appeal

  395. to all of His authority

  396. in terms of the last words

  397. before He ascends,

  398. you've got to realize

  399. whatever He's going to say next

  400. in terms of His command,

  401. it is super important

  402. to the risen Jesus.

  403. It's of utmost importance.

  404. And you've got to feel

  405. the weight of His authority.

  406. Jesus has unlimited right

  407. to require our total obedience

  408. to Him.

  409. So here's the question

  410. I want you to start asking yourself.

  411. Are you thinking about that day?

  412. Are you thinking about that day

  413. when you'll stand before Him?

  414. That day when you'll give an account

  415. for your life to Him

  416. and specifically,

  417. on that day,

  418. you will give an account

  419. for how you've been moving people

  420. towards Jesus.

  421. That's of utmost importance to Him.

  422. You need to think about today

  423. in light of that day.

  424. Now, when we think about

  425. moving from being a disciple of Jesus

  426. to being disciple makers for Jesus,

  427. here's how that works.

  428. No longer do you

  429. just think about yourself

  430. standing before Jesus

  431. on that day.

  432. You start thinking about other people

  433. standing before Jesus

  434. on that day.

  435. You start to be burdened

  436. for other people

  437. that they stand before Jesus

  438. on that day

  439. and be able to say,

  440. I've given it all for you.

  441. To hear Him say,

  442. come into the joy of your Master.

  443. It changes the way.

  444. When you start getting

  445. a disciple making mentality,

  446. it changes the way

  447. to see yourself,

  448. the people in your home,

  449. the people in your church,

  450. your non-believing friends

  451. and family and co-workers.

  452. Speaking pastorally,

  453. my desire

  454. is that every one of you

  455. stand before the Lord Jesus Christ

  456. on that day

  457. with as little regret

  458. as possible

  459. and with greatest amount of joy.

  460. When we read about Jesus'

  461. great authority,

  462. you need to feel the weight of that.

  463. His great authority over us.

  464. But He also makes,

  465. number two,

  466. His great promise to us.

  467. And that's at the end of verse 20.

  468. Remember, central to the Great Commission

  469. is verse 19,

  470. this command,

  471. make disciples.

  472. At the end of the Great Commission

  473. is a great promise.

  474. It's the second half of verse 20.

  475. And behold, I am with you always

  476. to the end of the age.

  477. Notice what Jesus is promising.

  478. I am with you always.

  479. That phrase always,

  480. you can translate it every day.

  481. I am with you every day

  482. until the end of the age.

  483. What a promise.

  484. He's promising to be personally present with us

  485. every day.

  486. Now, of all the things that Jesus could have promised,

  487. promised at this moment,

  488. it's very interesting that He promises

  489. to be present with us.

  490. He doesn't promise

  491. that we're going to avoid suffering for Him.

  492. He doesn't promise

  493. ease in this life.

  494. He doesn't promise

  495. that all of our loved ones

  496. will come to Christ

  497. and follow Him.

  498. He doesn't promise that.

  499. What He does promise

  500. is the greatest thing He can promise

  501. Himself.

  502. The all-authoritative Christ

  503. is with us every day.

  504. Now, why does Jesus

  505. make this great promise

  506. to us

  507. in the Great Commission?

  508. One may say

  509. to comfort us.

  510. His presence

  511. is a comfort.

  512. He is an ever-present help

  513. in time of trouble.

  514. But I don't think

  515. that's the primary reason

  516. He makes this great promise.

  517. The real reason

  518. Jesus promises

  519. to be with us every day

  520. is to put courage

  521. in our hearts.

  522. The task of making disciples

  523. requires

  524. courage.

  525. There are different decisions

  526. to be made.

  527. There are hard things

  528. to be said.

  529. There will always be pushback,

  530. fallout,

  531. pressure to compromise,

  532. moving people

  533. towards Jesus

  534. takes courage.

  535. Back in the book of Joshua,

  536. Moses is now off the scene

  537. and God is going to

  538. lead His people

  539. into the promised land

  540. through Joshua.

  541. He's got a great task

  542. for Joshua.

  543. Challenging task.

  544. Listen to these words

  545. at the beginning

  546. of Joshua.

    Joshua 1:5–9

  547. Chapter 1,

  548. verses 5 through 9.

  549. I'm just going to

  550. let it soak in.

  551. No man shall be able

  552. to stand before you

  553. all the days of your life.

  554. Just as I was with Moses,

  555. so I will be with you.

  556. I will not leave you

  557. or forsake you.

  558. Be strong and courageous,

  559. for you shall cause

  560. the people to inherit

  561. the land that I swore

  562. to their fathers

  563. to give them.

  564. Only be strong

  565. and very courageous,

  566. being careful to do

  567. according to all the law

  568. that Moses,

  569. my servant,

  570. commanded you.

  571. Do not turn from it

  572. to the right hand

  573. or to the left,

  574. that you may have

  575. good success

  576. wherever you go.

  577. This book of the law

  578. shall not depart

  579. from your mouth,

  580. but you shall meditate

  581. on it day and night

  582. so that you may be careful

  583. to do according to

  584. all that is written in it.

  585. For then you will

  586. make your way prosperous

  587. and then you will

  588. have good success.

  589. Have I not commanded you?

  590. Be strong and courageous.

  591. Do not be frightened

  592. and do not be dismayed,

  593. for the Lord your God

  594. is with you

  595. wherever you go.

  596. Joshua was given

  597. a great task

  598. that requires

  599. great courage

  600. and God gives

  601. this great promise,

  602. I'm with you.

  603. We've been given

  604. a great task

  605. that requires

  606. great courage

  607. and Jesus is saying,

  608. I'm with you

  609. every day.

  610. I'm with you.

  611. How do you apply this?

  612. Does the thought

  613. of talking to someone

  614. else about Jesus,

  615. whether a non-Christian

  616. or a Christian,

  617. does that frighten you?

  618. Does that put dismay

  619. in your heart?

  620. Could that be the cause

  621. of disconnect

  622. between our profession

  623. and our practice?

  624. Jesus says,

  625. do not be frightened

  626. and do not be dismayed,

  627. for the Lord your God

  628. is with you

  629. wherever you go.

  630. Jesus says,

  631. behold,

  632. I am with you

  633. every day

  634. to the end

  635. of the age.

  636. Jesus,

  637. in his

  638. all-authoritative

  639. being,

  640. his

  641. risen fullness

  642. fullness

  643. has promised

  644. to be with us.

  645. And so,

  646. you know how to respond

  647. to that?

  648. You take courage.

  649. That puts courage

  650. in your heart.

  651. It's a great promise.

  652. It gives great courage.

  653. Number three

  654. is great task

  655. entrusted to us.

  656. The central command

  657. of the Great Commission

  658. is make disciples.

  659. And what I've shown you

  660. so far is

  661. the preface to that

  662. is an appeal

  663. to his great authority

  664. and what follows that

  665. is an appeal

  666. to a great promise.

  667. What is this

  668. great command?

  669. When Jesus

  670. commands his disciples

  671. to make him

  672. more disciples,

  673. he's telling them,

  674. move people

  675. towards me.

  676. Wherever you are,

  677. be moving people

  678. towards me.

  679. What I want you

  680. to feel with this

  681. command,

  682. make disciples,

  683. is that Jesus

  684. is speaking that

  685. to you.

  686. To you.

  687. He's calling you

  688. to make disciples.

  689. You're part of

  690. his ministry strategy.

  691. The book,

  692. The Vine Project

  693. that we've been

  694. going through,

  695. it helps us

  696. think about

  697. making disciples.

  698. It helps us

  699. to think about

  700. in terms of

  701. a process

  702. with different

  703. phases.

  704. So let me lay out

  705. these four phases

  706. to you

  707. because I think

  708. it will help you.

  709. In terms of

  710. making a disciple,

  711. phase one is

  712. to engage

  713. with someone,

  714. to find common

  715. ground with them,

  716. to build rapport

  717. with them.

  718. I, for the last

  719. three years,

  720. have been running

  721. across a man

  722. named Stan

  723. in the Kenosha

  724. Dunes.

  725. I hike there a lot

  726. and Stan is there

  727. every spring

  728. looking for birds.

  729. this weekend

  730. I interacted

  731. with him

  732. and it came out

  733. that I'm a pastor

  734. of Christ the King

  735. Church.

  736. Just moving

  737. the ball,

  738. just engaging

  739. with them,

  740. just starting

  741. a conversation.

  742. Engaging people,

  743. finding common

  744. ground.

  745. The reason why

  746. I got,

  747. I asked a bunch

  748. of people to help

  749. with the Kenosha

  750. Marathon,

  751. the Wisconsin

  752. Marathon,

  753. was to engage

  754. people on that

  755. Saturday morning

  756. and we did.

  757. There's various

  758. ways we can engage

  759. but it's part

  760. of making disciples.

  761. That's phase one.

  762. Phase two is

  763. evangelism.

  764. Telling non-Christians

  765. the good news

  766. about Jesus Christ

  767. and what he's done

  768. on the cross

  769. and extending

  770. Christ's call

  771. to them

  772. to come follow him.

  773. That's good news.

  774. The invitation

  775. from Jesus

  776. to come be

  777. my disciple.

  778. Good news.

  779. So engage,

  780. evangelize,

  781. and then establish.

  782. For those people

  783. who respond

  784. to Christ's call,

  785. they become Christians,

  786. they respond

  787. to God's grace.

  788. To establish

  789. a Christian

  790. means to get them

  791. on their solid ground,

  792. get their feet

  793. underneath them,

  794. help them understand

  795. what the Bible is,

  796. how to pray,

  797. who they are

  798. in Christ Jesus,

  799. help them to understand

  800. the importance

  801. of the church.

  802. It's really just

  803. showing them

  804. the means of grace

  805. in terms of following Jesus

  806. so that they can grow

  807. into Christ our head.

  808. The last phase

  809. is to be equipped.

  810. And what equipping is

  811. is training Christians

  812. to know how to engage

  813. and evangelize

  814. non-Christians

  815. and how to establish

  816. Christians where they are.

  817. it's all about

  818. moving people,

  819. whether non-Christian

  820. or Christian,

  821. towards Jesus.

  822. So wherever some way

  823. it may be,

  824. we seek to help them

  825. take the next step

  826. towards Jesus

  827. because wherever

  828. there are disciples,

  829. there must be

  830. disciple-making.

  831. This great task

  832. is spelled out

  833. in Matthew 28

  834. of making disciples,

  835. of moving people

  836. towards Jesus.

  837. in Matthew 28, 19,

  838. there are these

  839. three words

  840. that describe

  841. more fully

  842. this disciple-making

  843. process.

  844. Look at verse 19.

  845. The first word

  846. is the word go.

  847. Go, therefore,

  848. and make disciples

  849. of all nations.

  850. Going means going,

  851. moving towards people.

  852. In order to engage

  853. and evangelize,

  854. establish and equip,

  855. we need to move

  856. towards other people,

  857. all people,

  858. but especially those

  859. people immediately

  860. around you.

  861. You know,

  862. this command is to go

  863. to all nations.

  864. Jesus is at work

  865. all around the world.

  866. But we're not

  867. directly responsible

  868. for what's happening

  869. in China.

  870. We're responsible

  871. for making disciples

  872. first and foremost

  873. here in Kenosha.

  874. So we're to think

  875. globally,

  876. but act locally.

  877. We move towards

  878. people wherever

  879. and whoever

  880. they are

  881. because everyone

  882. needs Jesus.

  883. 2 Corinthians 5

  884. talks about our task

  885. as being ambassadors

  886. for Jesus.

  887. We're representing

  888. Him

  889. to our family,

  890. to our church,

  891. to those people

  892. who we are interacting

  893. with on a regular basis.

  894. He sends us out

  895. daily.

  896. The second description

  897. of this making disciples

  898. is baptizing them

  899. in the name of the Father

  900. and the Son

  901. and the Holy Spirit.

  902. Remember what baptism is.

  903. It's simply a public

  904. announcement of your

  905. inward commitment

  906. to Jesus,

  907. this being united

  908. to Christ

  909. and His death

  910. and resurrection,

  911. your conversion.

  912. Your baptism

  913. announces it publicly.

  914. And so our task

  915. is not just moving

  916. people towards Jesus,

  917. but those who respond,

  918. we need to help them

  919. identify with Jesus

  920. publicly.

  921. It's not optional

  922. for those who believe.

  923. It is a command.

  924. Over the last nine months,

  925. we've baptized

  926. four people

  927. to help them

  928. to publicly

  929. identify themselves

  930. with Jesus.

  931. The last description

  932. is teaching them

  933. to observe

  934. all that I commanded you.

  935. We are moving people

  936. towards Jesus

  937. and obedience

  938. to Him.

  939. Obedience

  940. to His initial call

  941. to come follow me

  942. and obedience

  943. to His commands

  944. that we see

  945. all throughout

  946. the Gospels.

  947. Here's what I want

  948. to emphasize.

  949. In the ESV,

  950. in verse 19,

  951. we read this,

  952. excuse me,

  953. verse 20,

  954. teaching them

  955. to observe

  956. all that I have

  957. commanded you.

  958. That word observe

  959. actually means

  960. to keep.

  961. When you read it,

  962. it looks like,

  963. it seems like

  964. you're just saying,

  965. look at those words

  966. of Jesus, right?

  967. But we know

  968. it carries a heavier sense,

  969. a bigger claim,

  970. to keep.

  971. When we are teaching

  972. people to observe

  973. all that Jesus commands,

  974. what we're teaching them

  975. is not to be

  976. a hearer only

  977. of what Jesus says,

  978. but to be a doer

  979. of what Jesus says,

  980. to help them

  981. to keep

  982. Jesus' words,

  983. to put them

  984. into practice,

  985. to not stay

  986. at profession

  987. but move

  988. into putting

  989. His words

  990. into play.

  991. And so what we're

  992. doing is

  993. when we are parents,

  994. you are the disciple

  995. makers of your children,

  996. what you're seeking

  997. to do is not just

  998. help your children

  999. learn about Jesus,

  1000. but to learn

  1001. in order to live

  1002. for Jesus.

  1003. We learn from Jesus

  1004. to live for Jesus.

1005. And what we have here

  1006. is a change

  1007. of lifestyle.

  1008. To become a follower

  1009. of Jesus

  1010. is to change

  1011. the way you live.

  1012. Where does

  1013. all this happen?

  1014. where does

  1015. all this

  1016. going,

  1017. baptizing,

  1018. teaching,

  1019. moving people,

  1020. engage,

  1021. evangelize,

  1022. establish,

  1023. equip,

  1024. where does

  1025. all that happen?

  1026. Wherever there

  1027. are disciples,

  1028. there must be

  1029. disciple making.

  1030. It happens

  1031. wherever we are.

  1032. This is the great

  1033. task given to us

  1034. by Jesus.

  1035. And it's not

  1036. optional to carry out.

  1037. How do you

  1038. respond to this?

  1039. Because

  1040. you take action.

  1041. You step out.

  1042. And that's where I want

  1043. to bring you next.

  1044. The fourth great

  1045. is the great

  1046. opportunity

  1047. before us.

  1048. Where our disciples

  1049. made,

  1050. wherever we are,

  1051. wherever the church

  1052. is,

  1053. wherever

  1054. the kingdom

  1055. of light

  1056. is intersecting

  1057. the domain

  1058. of darkness.

  1059. So four

  1060. opportunities,

  1061. starting with

  1062. yourself.

  1063. Have you heard

  1064. of when Jesus

  1065. talks about

  1066. going to your

  1067. prayer closet?

  1068. I want you

  1069. to think of

  1070. your prayer closet

  1071. as your

  1072. go closet.

  1073. Every morning

  1074. you find a place

  1075. to lay your

  1076. heart out

  1077. before the

  1078. Lord Jesus

  1079. Christ,

  1080. to confess

  1081. Him as

  1082. your Lord

  1083. and King

  1084. and to

  1085. lay down

  1086. your life

  1087. once again

  1088. in order to

  1089. learn from Him

  1090. and live for Him

  1091. and become like Him

  1092. because you love Him.

  1093. In your

  1094. go closet,

  1095. you walk

  1096. into your

  1097. go closet

  1098. needing a

  1099. heart change.

  1100. But you

  1101. leave your

  1102. go closet

  1103. sent

  1104. by Jesus.

  1105. go closet.

  1106. When you're

  1107. in the

  1108. go closet,

  1109. you've got to

  1110. be asking

  1111. questions of

  1112. yourself like

  1113. this.

  1114. Today,

  1115. am I

  1116. treasuring

  1117. Jesus above

  1118. all else?

  1119. Is He my

  1120. number one?

  1121. And if not,

  1122. who's my

  1123. chief rival

  1124. and how can I

  1125. repent of that?

  1126. one of the

  1127. greatest things

  1128. that you can

  1129. do in your

  1130. go closet

  1131. to be ready

  1132. to be sent

  1133. by Jesus

  1134. as His

  1135. ambassador,

  1136. to go make

  1137. disciples of

  1138. the nations,

  1139. the best thing

  1140. that you can do

  1141. to prepare

  1142. yourself to

  1143. make disciples

  1144. of other

  1145. people is to

  1146. remember what

  1147. Jesus has

  1148. done for you.

  1149. To remember

  1150. that you were

  1151. running away

  1152. from Him in the

  1153. domain of darkness

  1154. and by His

  1155. grace and grace

  1156. alone He

  1157. called you to

  1158. Himself.

  1159. One of the

  1160. things that I

  1161. think is a

  1162. problem with

  1163. our evangelism,

  1164. one of the

  1165. stymieing points

  1166. is this,

  1167. we don't think

  1168. we have

  1169. things to tell

  1170. people.

  1171. We don't

  1172. think people

  1173. care of what

  1174. we have to

  1175. say.

  1176. So one of the

  1177. things that you

  1178. can do to

  1179. enhance your

  1180. evangelism and

  1181. to make your

  1182. following Jesus

  1183. relevant to other

  1184. people,

  1185. is to ask

  1186. this question.

  1187. What difference

  1188. is Jesus making

  1189. in your life

  1190. right now?

  1191. What difference

  1192. is He making?

  1193. Now you've got

  1194. something to tell

  1195. somebody else.

  1196. So you start

  1197. with the

  1198. opportunity of

  1199. yourself.

  1200. Stepping into

  1201. the go closet

  1202. and stepping out

  1203. sent as an

  1204. ambassador to

  1205. Jesus.

  1206. And the next

  1207. opportunity is

  1208. your home.

  1209. parents,

  1210. you are the

  1211. disciple makers

  1212. of your home.

  1213. You are the

  1214. ambassadors for

  1215. Jesus to your

  1216. children first and

  1217. foremost.

  1218. Not exclusively,

  1219. but primarily.

  1220. Unprecedented

  1221. opportunities day in,

  1222. day out to speak

  1223. of Jesus,

  1224. point to Jesus

  1225. again and again,

  1226. loving your

  1227. children that way.

  1228. Here's how I want

1229. to help you in your

  1230. parenting and your

  1231. discipling of your

  1232. children.

  1233. Think about each of

  1234. your children along

  1235. those phases.

  1236. Engage, evangelize,

  1237. establish, equip.

  1238. Where are they at?

  1239. Where are they at?

  1240. Meet them there.

  1241. Meet them there.

  1242. Don't meet them where

1243. you want them to be.

  1244. Meet them where

  1245. they're at.

  1246. But here is,

  1247. I think,

  1248. a very important

  1249. tool in your

  1250. discipleship to

  1251. your children.

  1252. Make sure you're

  1253. using your life.

  1254. Make sure you're

  1255. bearing testimony to

  1256. them.

  1257. Make sure you are

  1258. telling them why

  1259. you are a follower

  1260. of Jesus.

  1261. Make sure you are

  1262. telling them the

  1263. difference that Jesus

  1264. makes in your life

  1265. and you wouldn't

  1266. have it any other

  1267. way.

  1268. Live it out

  1269. before them.

  1270. The difference

  1271. that it makes.

  1272. You know what?

  1273. They can reject

  1274. Jesus in due time,

  1275. but don't let them

  1276. use your life as

  1277. reason not to

  1278. believe in Jesus.

  1279. Follow Jesus.

  1280. I could say more

  1281. about how to love

  1282. your spouse,

  1283. but we've got to

  1284. keep moving.

  1285. The third

  1286. opportunity is your

  1287. church.

  1288. Moving your church

  1289. towards Jesus.

  1290. We've talked about

  1291. moving yourself

  1292. towards Jesus.

  1293. We've talked about

  1294. moving your family

  1295. towards Jesus.

  1296. Now moving your

  1297. church towards

  1298. Jesus.

  1299. Christ the King

  1300. Church.

  1301. Can you all start

  1302. seeing Sunday

  1303. morning as the

  1304. flagship discipleship

  1305. event in our

  1306. lives together?

  1307. This is where we

  1308. gather as

  1309. disciples, where

  1310. we're engaging

  1311. non-Christians,

  1312. evangelizing non-Christians,

  1313. and establishing and

  1314. equipping Christians to

  1315. then scatter out for

  1316. Jesus so that we're

  1317. all laying our lives

  1318. down, learning from,

  1319. living for,

  1320. becoming like Jesus,

  1321. all because we love

  1322. Him.

1323. If you want more on

  1324. this, listen to last

  1325. week's sermon.

  1326. The fourth

  1327. opportunity I want

1328. you to be aware of

  1329. in terms of moving

  1330. people towards Jesus

  1331. is moving your

  1332. non-Christian friends

  1333. and family and

  1334. co-workers to Jesus.

  1335. I'm not going to

  1336. give you a four-point,

  1337. step-by-step, how to

  1338. evangelize them right

  1339. now.

  1340. I'm just going to, I'm

1341. going to give you some

  1342. recommendations to

  1343. start preparing your

  1344. heart for that.

  1345. Start praying for

  1346. specific non-Christians

1347. God has put into your

  1348. life.

  1349. Start praying for

  1350. them by name.

  1351. Start imagining them

  1352. standing before Jesus

  1353. and standing before

  1354. Jesus' throne someday.

  1355. Let that burden you.

  1356. be burdened for your

  1357. non-Christian friends

  1358. and family.

  1359. Be asking God for

  1360. opportunities to bear

  1361. witness to God's

  1362. grace to them.

  1363. God, give me an

  1364. opportunity to speak to

  1365. my CPA.

1366. I got to share the

  1367. gospel with my CPA

  1368. this past week.

  1369. He didn't buy it.

  1370. But man, was it

  1371. clear.

  1372. He didn't buy it.

  1373. One of the greatest

  1374. questions you can be

  1375. asking yourself in

  1376. preparation of talking

  1377. to your non-Christian

  1378. friends and family,

  1379. what difference is

  1380. Jesus making in your

  1381. life right now?

  1382. Tell them, I've got

  1383. hope.

  1384. I'm not afraid.

  1385. I'm looking forward

  1386. to.

  1387. I've got strength for

  1388. today.

  1389. Hope for tomorrow.

  1390. I was so

  1391. encouraged to hear

  1392. that the women's

  1393. book club, their

  1394. next book is

  1395. The Gospel Comes

  1396. with a House Key.

  1397. And I would just

  1398. encourage every woman

  1399. to get into that

  1400. women's book club

  1401. to read that book.

  1402. Because that's going

  1403. to speak of

  1404. hospitality as an

  1405. engagement tool

  1406. with non-Christians.

  1407. It's a great book.

  1408. And brothers and

  1409. sisters, in terms of

  1410. other opportunities

  1411. coming, we've got

  1412. something brewing

  1413. right now in our

  1414. church.

  1415. An evangelistic tool

  1416. for a whole church

  1417. to lay hold of.

1418. But it's in the early

  1419. stages.

1420. And there will be a

  1421. time to share more

  1422. of it.

  1423. But pray, pray, pray

  1424. that God would bring

  1425. together a team

  1426. for our whole church

  1427. to use an evangelistic

  1428. tool.

  1429. Where does this

  1430. discipleship take place?

  1431. wherever there are

  1432. disciples.

  1433. These are the

  1434. opportunities before us.

  1435. Wherever the church is,

  1436. we are making

  1437. disciples.

  1438. We are moving people

  1439. towards Jesus.

  1440. And we have

  1441. opportunities in front

  1442. of us right now.

1443. Why are there so many

1444. people who profess to be

  1445. disciples but are not

  1446. making disciples?

  1447. disciples?

  1448. Because of a disconnect.

1449. And this morning with the

  1450. Great Commission, I wanted

  1451. to help make the

  1452. connection for you.

  1453. That His great authority

1454. over us, we need to feel

  1455. the weight of that.

1456. That His great promise to

1457. us, we take courage from

  1458. that.

  1459. That this great task

1460. entrusted to us, we act

  1461. on that.

  1462. We move people towards

  1463. Jesus because we've got

  1464. great opportunities to

  1465. make disciples right here,

  1466. right now.

1467. You're going to leave this

  1468. building this morning,

  1469. walking under a door

  1470. frame that's going to

1471. say, you are now entering

  1472. your mission field.

  1473. Wherever there are

  1474. disciples, there must be

  1475. disciple making.

  1476. Where are disciples made?

  1477. Spirit, wherever you are,

  1478. you've been commissioned.

1479. Next week is going to be a

1480. call to prayer because this

1481. work is way bigger than any

  1482. one of us.

  1483. Let me pray.

1484. God in heaven, would you do

1485. a work in us that you get us

1486. over our fears, that you help

1487. us to step out in faith, and

1488. that you give us words to speak

1489. of your goodness towards us

  1490. in Christ.

1491. God, would you do a work by

1492. your spirit in which the

1493. gospel goes out from Christ

1494. the King Church in power, and

1495. that you move non-Christians to

1496. faith in Jesus, and you move

  1497. Christians to greater, greater

  1498. degrees of discipleship, more

1499. and more maturity, greater and

1500. greater equipping God to send

  1501. more and more out.

1502. Lord, only you can do that,

  1503. Lord.

1504. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1505. Amen.
