  1. Well, I invite you to open your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 1, verses 3 through 14.

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  2. So let's do what we just sang.

  3. Let's listen to God's Word.

  4. If you have a pew Bible in front of you, I think that's 1159 is the page number.

  5. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  6. But Paul writes this letter from being chained to a Roman soldier in a rented house in Rome.

  7. And he writes this.

  8. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Him with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  9. even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  10. In love He predestined us for adoption to Himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will,

  11. to the praise of His glorious grace with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.

  12. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace,

  13. which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of His will according to His purpose,

  14. which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth.

  15. In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him,

  16. who works all things according to the counsel of His will,

  17. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory.

  18. In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation,

  19. and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  20. who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of His glory.

  21. Let's pray.

  22. Father, thank you for this passage, and thank you for the reminder and the call for us to bring you praise.

  23. Oh, we have so many reasons, so many opportunities, so many things in our minds and hearts

  24. as we reflect on what it means to be a believer in Jesus Christ,

  25. how much we have to praise you for.

  26. I would pray that as we work our way through this passage,

  27. that you would begin to press on our hearts the glory and wonder of who you are.

  28. We would think about you.

  29. We would think about what you've done.

  30. In eternity past, now and for eternity future,

  31. what all this means.

  32. And may our lives be changed so that we go here in the rest of the day,

  33. the rest of the week might be to the praise of your glory.

  34. We pray that you'll help us, that you'll work in us,

  35. and that you'll change us for your glory alone.

  36. In your name we pray. Amen.

  37. Most of us know the doxology.

  38. We sing it here.

  39. In fact, we're going to sing it today at the end of the service.

  40. You know the words.

  41. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

  42. Praise Him all creatures here below.

  43. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.

  44. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  45. My first pastorate, I inherited the tradition of singing the doxology after receiving the offering.

  46. So every Sunday, receive the offering, we would all sing the doxology.

  47. We didn't have words in front of us.

  48. We all knew the song.

  49. It was very easy to sing.

  50. We would all remember it.

  51. But I was always bothered by that because I thought, we're just singing this rote.

  52. We're not really thinking about it.

  53. We really ought to do something with that.

  54. So I decided that we would sing the doxology but to an alternate tune.

  55. The tune was the hymn, Jesus Shall Rain.

  56. It works perfectly in the hymn.

  57. But this would be a great thing for us.

  58. So we'll concentrate more on what we're singing than just singing this rote idea.

  59. Well, suddenly, as we began to sing that song to the tune of Jesus Shall Rain, it sounded more like a foreign language.

  60. And we were all fumbling over the words.

  61. And finally, most people quit singing before the brief little song was completed.

  62. And I was told after that, don't ever try that again.

  63. Often in Scripture, the Bible writers break into doxology, an expression of praise to God.

  64. One example of that is in Romans chapter 11.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  65. Paul was arguing for the sovereign purposes of God in chapters 9 through 11 of that great book.

  66. By the time he reached the end of that section, it seems as if he could really hold back no longer in his praise to our great God.

  67. And so he writes this,

  68. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!

  69. How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable His ways!

  70. For who has known the mind of the Lord?

  71. Or who has been His counselor?

  72. Or who has given the gift to Him that He might be repaid?

  73. For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things.

  74. To Him be glory forever. Amen.

  75. Well, in this letter to the Ephesians, Paul is going to write about Christ's unsearchable riches.

  76. And I suspect that as he began to contemplate the vastness of God's greatness and the wonder of God's grace,

  77. he breaks into a doxological discourse involving the triune God, even before writing the rest of the letter.

  78. You may have sort of picked it up in the English version of Ephesians 1,

  79. but did you know that in verses 3 to 14 are actually one long sentence in the Greek text?

  80. Paul would not have made it in an English class for run-on sentences,

  81. but an incredible truth of what God has done and the reason for this great doxology.

  82. So, verses 3 through 6, he tells us this.

  83. All spiritual blessings come from the Father.

  84. So think about that for a minute.

  85. As you read through this, it's a little bit hard.

  86. There's a lot of hymns in there.

  87. Blessed be the God and Father.

  88. Even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.

  89. He and Him.

  90. And it's hard to try to figure all that out.

  91. But I think the emphasis is on the Father.

  92. But He's telling us that in the Father, from the Father, all spiritual blessings come.

  93. Well, what are some of those blessings?

  94. Well, for one, is He chose us.

  95. Verse 4.

  96. He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world.

  97. Before anything was created, that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  98. He didn't just choose us to save us.

  99. He chose us to make us into something that would be presented to Him.

  100. Holy and blameless.

  101. Left to ourselves, we would never have chosen Him.

  102. The Bible tells us that we are dead in our sin.

  103. We would never seek after God.

  104. There's no one who seeks after God.

  105. No one has ever sought after Him.

  106. We are unable and unwilling to respond to a holy God.

  107. In fact, the Bible says that we are enemies of God.

  108. But in His infinite mercy and grace, He determined to call us out of the bondage of sin and grant to us eternal life.

  109. And so we praise Him.

  110. For those of us who belong to Christ, why did God choose us?

  111. Have you ever thought about that?

  112. Why did God choose me?

  113. I don't know.

  114. But I know that He did.

  115. And I hope I never get over the wonder and the shock that He chose me.

  116. If you're sort of patting yourself on the back for believing in Jesus, I'm sure glad I came to that conclusion.

  117. You've missed Paul's point.

  118. And you're not really entering into this grand doxology.

  119. See, God the Father chose some out of the whole of already condemned mankind.

  120. And He gave them the gift of His Son.

  121. A gift that on the one hand was given to the Son, and on the other hand, purchased by the Son.

  122. The Father took the initiative and chose some.

  123. That is an incredible spiritual blessing.

  124. He not only chose us, but He predestined us.

  125. Verse 5.

  126. The Father predestined us.

  127. That's a word that we sometimes trip over a bit.

  128. But just think of it this way.

  129. God set His love upon us a long time ago.

  130. The emphasis is in the past.

  131. He did this a long time ago.

  132. According to the purpose of His will.

  133. And His infinite wisdom and sovereign authority, before He ever made the universe,

  134. He determined to set His love upon those who would believe in Him,

  135. that we might be able one day to stand before Him face to face,

  136. wholly and without blame.

  137. He had to choose us, and He had to set His love upon us,

  138. if that was ever to become a reality.

  139. So He chose us, He predestined us.

  140. These are all blessings from the Father through the Son.

  141. He chose us, He predestined us, He adopted us.

  142. Verse 5.

  143. We who were aliens from God, enemies of God.

  144. He adopted us into His family.

  145. And He granted us all the rights and privileges as children of His.

  146. Again, according to the purpose of His will.

  147. Verse 7 reminds us that He redeemed us.

  148. What's redemption mean?

  149. Well, the idea is to purchase and set free by the payment of a price.

  150. In Paul's day, one would go to the marketplace, the agora, to purchase merchandise,

  151. and then take it home, take home what was purchased.

  152. It now belonged to the one who made the purchase.

  153. So what was bought was set free from the marketplace.

  154. That's redemption.

  155. We're not merely bought and brought out of the marketplace of sin, never to be returned,

  156. but we are set free from our condition as a slave to sin.

  157. He bought us and set us free from the penalty of sin.

  158. Charles Wesley understood this when he wrote the song, And Can It Be?

  159. One of those verses in that song says,

  160. Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin in nature's night.

  161. But he speaks of God.

  162. Thine eye diffused a quickening ray.

  163. I woke the dungeon flame with light.

  164. My chains fell off.

  165. My heart was free.

  166. I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

  167. That's the way it was.

  168. God redeemed us.

  169. What an amazing spiritual blessing.

  170. When I start to think of God and start to praise Him,

  171. what's the first thing that comes to our mind?

  172. It seems to me it ought to start with,

  173. What did He do for me?

  174. He chose me.

  175. He predestined me.

  176. He adopted me.

  177. He redeemed me.

  178. All those things are great spiritual blessings that come from the Father.

  179. And then He applied His design and purpose for us, to us and for us.

  180. That's sort of verses 8 to 12 and sort of wrapping that up kind of quickly.

  181. But this may be the answer to why we must praise Him.

  182. Everything God has done and will do is for the praise of His glory.

  183. For the praise of His glorious grace.

  184. In other words, God's design of salvation, that is, rescuing us from sin and death and granting to us eternal life.

  185. And God's, not only His design for salvation, but His design of sanctification, that is, making us holy and conforming us into His image.

  186. And His design for glorification, that is, presenting us holy and blameless before Him.

  187. All of that was to praise Him.

  188. In fact, in the final analysis, my salvation is not ultimately about me.

  189. Your salvation is not ultimately about you.

  190. It's about Him.

  191. He, not we, will be the focal point of all eternity.

  192. It's not, look at all those people who have been redeemed.

  193. In heaven, it will be, look at this great God who redeemed all those people from every tribe and tongue and nation.

  194. You see the difference?

  195. The focus is on Him, not on us.

  196. So, why would God choose us and set His love upon us?

  197. Well, unaided, we never would have responded to Him.

  198. If we could have, we would have taken the credit.

  199. And that would go contrary to the very intention of God's plan.

  200. This rescue was to magnify the greatness and glory and grace of the Rescuer.

  201. He purposed to do this because for all eternity, He will be the focus of all praise.

  202. All that we are now and all that we will be in His presence is because of Him.

  203. John Calvin, during the time of the Reformation, wrote,

  204. Whatever happens to us, let us always assure ourselves that we have good cause to praise our God.

  205. And that even if we are poor and miserable in this world,

  206. the happiness of heaven is enough to appease us,

  207. to sweeten all of our afflictions and sorrows,

  208. and to give us such contentment that we may nevertheless have our mouths open to bless God

  209. for showing Himself so kind-hearted and liberal towards us,

  210. as even to adopt us as His children,

  211. and to show us that the heritage which has been purchased for us

  212. by the blood of His only Son is ready for us,

  213. and that we cannot miss it,

  214. seeing that we go to it with true and invincible constancy of faith.

  215. We have been blessed.

  216. Blessed beyond measure by the Father.

  217. And those blessings from the Father come to us through the Son.

  218. So the second idea here in this passage

  219. is that all spiritual blessings which come from the Father

  220. are found in Christ Jesus.

  221. That's where we find them.

  222. That's where these blessings come to us,

  223. and through Him, through Christ,

  224. these are the blessings that we have.

  225. So in Him, whether that means in God, the Father,

  226. or in Christ, you could make an argument either way,

  227. but in Him, in God, we have redemption.

  228. We have been chosen by the Father to be holy and blameless,

  229. but before we arrive at that promised position,

  230. something had to be done in regard to our sin.

  231. And so we need to talk a little bit about redemption's price here.

  232. Sin was a serious problem, an affront to a holy God.

  233. It could not merely be overlooked or ignored.

  234. A price was required,

  235. and the seriousness of the offense required an astronomical price.

  236. Before sin became a reality,

  237. God had established the price that had to be paid to deal with sin.

  238. Remember what it was in the garden?

  239. In the day you eat of this forbidden fruit,

  240. what happens?

  241. You will die.

  242. And so death,

  243. a couple different ideas about death,

  244. death would come physically,

  245. but before that,

  246. death came spiritually in that man was now separated from God.

  247. So that happened,

  248. they were excommunicated from the garden.

  249. No longer was there a face-to-face relationship with God.

  250. Everything had changed.

  251. And years later,

  252. Adam and Eve would die physically.

  253. Death is separation.

  254. It starts with separation from God,

  255. and then ends with separation from our body and our spirit.

  256. That was what God had designed.

  257. The sacrificial system throughout the Old Testament

  258. introduced the idea of a substitute to pay the penalty for sin,

  259. which included the payment of a blood sacrifice.

  260. The problem with that was that this system was never-ending.

  261. How many animals do you suppose were slaughtered

  262. during the Old Testament time?

  263. Reading some of the passages in the Old Testament,

  264. just amazing,

  265. you know,

  266. the thousands and thousands and tens of thousands

  267. and millions probably of animals,

  268. sacrificed.

  269. It never ended.

  270. Sacrifice,

  271. and another sacrifice,

  272. and another sacrifice,

  273. continued on.

  274. But the problem was that

  275. that debt

  276. for sin was never satisfied.

  277. The debt was too big.

  278. It was sort of like

  279. having a loan

  280. and paying only the interest.

  281. How long will that take you to pay the loan?

  282. See,

  283. there was an appeasement,

  284. as it were,

  285. for the sacrifices in the Old Testament

  286. so that life could continue

  287. without major interruption,

  288. but the debt never got any smaller,

  289. much less satisfied.

  290. The full payment

  291. would still one day be required.

  292. So what was that payment?

  293. Well, we know.

  294. Jesus,

  295. the only one who could pay that enormous price,

  296. came

  297. and paid the price in full

  298. through His blood.

  299. So the Father's blessing

  300. of redemption

  301. is found

  302. in Jesus.

  303. In Him,

  304. we have redemption.

  305. For seven tells us,

  306. in Him,

  307. we have forgiveness.

  308. So what is forgiveness?

  309. Well,

  310. forgiveness means to carry away.

  311. The truth was prefigured

  312. in Leviticus chapter 16,

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  313. where a priest would bring two goats.

  314. One would be sacrificed.

  315. The other,

  316. he would lay his hands on the goat

  317. as a symbol

  318. of passing the sins of the people

  319. onto that animal.

  320. And then the animal

  321. would be led off

  322. into the wilderness

  323. and that animal would,

  324. that goat would never be,

  325. make its way back.

  326. It would be lost forever.

  327. We call it the scapegoat.

  328. All right?

  329. That's where that came from.

  330. The goat was left there

  331. never to return.

  332. And that same truth is,

  333. we see that arrive several times

  334. throughout the Old Testament

  335. about how God carries our sins away.

  336. If John Tippmann would have continued reading

  337. in Psalm 103,

  338. he would have come to this verse,

  339. as far as the east is from the west,

  340. so far as he carried our trespasses,

  341. our sins from us.

  342. He removed,

  343. he removes our sin from his very presence.

  344. Jeremiah 31 verse 34 says,

    Jeremiah 31:34

  345. their sin I will remember no more.

  346. Not only is sin removed from his presence,

  347. it's also removed from his mind,

  348. his memory,

  349. as it were.

  350. Isaiah 43 verse 25,

    Isaiah 43:25

  351. Isaiah writes about,

  352. quoting God,

  353. I,

  354. I am he who blots out

  355. your transgressions

  356. for my own sake.

  357. Sin,

  358. gone from his presence,

  359. gone from his mind,

  360. gone from his ledger.

  361. Micah chapter 7 verse 19,

    Micah 7:19

  362. he casts all their sins

  363. into the depths of the sea.

  364. Gone from sight,

  365. gone,

  366. gone.

  367. We used to sing as a kid,

  368. gone,

  369. gone,

  370. gone,

  371. gone,

  372. yes,

  373. my sins are gone.

  374. Now my soul is free

  375. and in my heart's a song,

  376. buried in the deepest sea,

  377. yes,

  378. that's good enough for me.

  379. I forget the rest of it,

  380. but it ended with G-O-N-E,

  381. gone,

  382. whatever,

  383. you know.

  384. But it was so good

  385. that that's gone,

  386. my sins are gone,

  387. they're carried away,

  388. they're gone,

  389. in Christ Jesus.

  390. He's given me forgiveness.

  391. Is that not something

  392. for which to give him praise?

  393. That's what the psalm,

  394. that's what Paul is writing about.

  395. Why do we need forgiveness?

  396. We're transgressors.

  397. We've deviated from the truth,

  398. we've broken the law of God,

  399. we've missed the mark of God,

  400. that God's standard,

  401. that God's perfect standard,

  402. there's nothing that we can do

  403. to satisfy the offense.

  404. The requirement is death.

  405. Without forgiveness,

  406. we stand condemned to die.

  407. And not just physical death,

  408. but separation from God forever.

  409. But some of the sweetest words

  410. in all the Bible are found here.

  411. In Him,

  412. we have redemption

  413. through His blood,

  414. the forgiveness

  415. of our trespasses.

  416. On what is forgiveness based?

  417. Verses 7 and 8,

  418. it's based on the riches

  419. of God's grace

  420. found in Jesus.

  421. I appreciate it so much,

  422. Zach,

  423. picking out the music today

  424. because it really was,

  425. it was,

  426. it was,

  427. much of that was coming

  428. right from this text.

  429. Most of the words

  430. of those songs

  431. reminding us of

  432. the grace of God,

  433. how God lavished

  434. His grace.

  435. Don't you love that word?

  436. Lavished.

  437. Lavished upon us.

  438. When God forgives us,

  439. He keeps nothing back.

  440. There are no conditions

  441. to be fulfilled by us.

  442. He forgives according

  443. to the riches

  444. of His grace.

  445. When we are saved

  446. from our sin,

  447. God saves us

  448. from the penalty of sin.

  449. Again,

  450. what's the penalty of sin?

  451. Death.

  452. He saves us

  453. from the penalty of sin.

  454. What does He give us?

  455. We don't,

  456. we don't die

  457. for our sins now.

  458. We live for what?

  459. We live forever.

  460. We have eternal life.

  461. So,

  462. He exchanges death

  463. for eternal life.

  464. And then,

  465. in Him,

  466. we have wisdom

  467. and insight.

  468. Verses 8-12.

  469. Because God has lavished

  470. His grace upon us

  471. in Christ,

  472. we have been given

  473. understanding

  474. of the mystery

  475. of who God is.

  476. At least something of that.

  477. And what He's doing

  478. and where all this is going.

  479. We can at least know this.

  480. It is according

  481. to God's will.

  482. He planned it all

  483. without any help

  484. from anyone.

  485. It's according

  486. to God's own good pleasure.

  487. That is,

  488. He did it by Himself,

  489. for Himself,

  490. to please Himself.

  491. It is the revelation

  492. of God's plan

  493. for the management

  494. of the universe.

  495. In God's perfect plan

  496. and time,

  497. God will restore

  498. all things

  499. to and for Himself.

  500. And this restoration

  501. will be better

  502. than the original condition

  503. where there will be

  504. no possibility

  505. of becoming tainted,

  506. damaged,

  507. or destroyed.

  508. As Paul praises God,

  509. he does so knowing

  510. that all these blessings,

  511. all of this lavished grace

  512. from the Father

  513. comes through Jesus.

  514. Now there's one more

  515. piece of this,

  516. and that's in verses

  517. 13-14.

  518. All spiritual blessings

  519. from the Father

  520. found in Christ Jesus

  521. are guaranteed

  522. in the Holy Spirit.

  523. The Holy Spirit

  524. is the Holy Spirit

  525. of promise.

  526. Jesus had told

  527. His disciples

  528. that He was going

  529. back to heaven,

  530. and He was going

  531. to send another

  532. comforter.

  533. The word comforter,

  534. I don't know

  535. if it's the best

  536. translation or not,

  537. because usually

  538. when we think

  539. of comforter,

  540. what do we think of?

  541. Think of somebody,

  542. you know,

  543. a shoulder to cry on,

  544. or somebody to console us.

  545. But really the idea

  546. of the comforter here

  547. is really an advocate.

  548. It's somebody

  549. who comes alongside us

  550. to strengthen us.

  551. That's really the idea

  552. behind it.

  553. So Jesus,

  554. as the one who brings,

  555. we find our strength

  556. in Him,

  557. He then ascends to heaven

  558. and sends His Spirit

  559. who continues

  560. to strengthen us.

  561. And so,

  562. what happens

  563. when Jesus told

  564. the disciples,

  565. I'm going back to heaven,

  566. and I'm going to send

  567. another comforter,

  568. and you're to wait,

  569. and what do you get

  570. on the day of Pentecost?

  571. He's going to come

  572. with power,

  573. strength.

  574. And so there will be

  575. strength from the Spirit

  576. to give you what you need

  577. to continue to live.

  578. The indwelling presence

  579. of the Spirit

  580. in the believer

  581. is, at least in one sense,

  582. an undeniable mark

  583. of God's work in us

  584. and for us.

  585. So I can be assured

  586. that if the Holy Spirit

  587. is in me,

  588. then I belong to God.

  589. I'm one of His very own.

  590. So God gives His Spirit.

  591. He's the Spirit of promise.

  592. It's a promise that says

  593. that I belong to Him.

  594. But He's also the earnest

  595. or down payment

  596. of our inheritance.

  597. That means a couple of things.

  598. If you were to go buy a home,

  599. there's a probability

  600. that you have to put up

  601. some money.

  602. It's not the whole amount

  603. for the house.

  604. It's just some money

  605. that guarantees

  606. that there's going to be

  607. more to come, right?

  608. And it's saying that

  609. we're sort of holding this.

  610. This is a guarantee

  611. that you'll get the rest.

  612. Earnest money.

  613. Well, in a strange sort of way,

  614. that word is used

  615. for the Spirit.

  616. He becomes the earnest

  617. or the promise

  618. or the down payment

  619. on our ultimate glorification.

  620. That word was used

  621. in secular Greek

  622. to speak of a down payment

  623. on an animal

  624. or down payment on a wife.

  625. In this case,

  626. the Holy Spirit

  627. is a down payment,

  628. something very important,

  629. very valuable,

  630. but it was the promise

  631. of a future completed transaction.

  632. So the Father has given to us

  633. all these wonderful blessings

  634. and promises

  635. and so that we know

  636. that the certainty

  637. of the fulfillment

  638. of these promises,

  639. He has left the Holy Spirit

  640. as a down payment.

  641. If He would leave

  642. His Holy Spirit with me,

  643. don't you think

  644. that certainly

  645. He will complete

  646. what He started

  647. and bring me

  648. all the way home?

  649. people want assurances

  650. because human words

  651. are often not reliable.

  652. We seek oaths,

  653. guarantees,

  654. warranties.

  655. We want to make sure

  656. someone's backing up

  657. what has been promised.

  658. Certainly,

  659. God's Word is good

  660. and that should be enough

  661. for us,

  662. but God has graciously

  663. provided us

  664. with His own guarantee,

  665. the promised Holy Spirit.

  666. When we first trust Christ,

  667. we do not directly

  668. or immediately

  669. receive all the promises

  670. of God.

  671. Peter reminded us

  672. in his writings

  673. that many of those promises

  674. are, quote,

  675. reserved in heaven for you.

  676. But we do have

  677. the promised Holy Spirit.

  678. Surely that's enough

  679. for us to give Him praise.

  680. The Spirit

  681. is the down payment

  682. with the promise

  683. of more to come.

  684. The second idea here

  685. is that of a seal.

  686. The seal is a mark

  687. of ownership.

  688. It's a mark

  689. of a finished transaction.

  690. To have the Holy Spirit

  691. is to be able

  692. to declare,

  693. I'm saved.

  694. That was Paul's message

  695. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  696. We have the Spirit of God,

  697. we belong to Him.

  698. There are several stories

  699. in the Bible

  700. that illustrate

  701. the truth

  702. of a signet ring

  703. when the king

  704. or some other

  705. high-ranking official

  706. sealed something

  707. with the king's seal.

  708. That was a mark

  709. of authenticity.

  710. That's the Holy Spirit

  711. to us.

  712. Close to that idea

  713. is the idea

  714. of security.

  715. If you want

  716. to secure something,

  717. you would seal it.

  718. Younger people

  719. have to understand this,

  720. but just before

  721. the earth crossed

  722. hardened when I was

  723. in junior high school,

  724. we didn't have

  725. social media platforms,

  726. we didn't have

  727. cell phones,

  728. we didn't have

  729. any of that.

  730. We did this

  731. very strange thing.

  732. We used paper

  733. and a pencil

  734. and an envelope

  735. and we wrote letters.

  736. Now,

  737. in junior high,

  738. some of you need

  739. to think back

  740. a little ways

  741. at that point,

  742. but junior high kids

  743. say lots of stuff

  744. and a lot of things

  745. they want to keep secret,

  746. they want people

  747. to know about it,

  748. so these notes

  749. would get passed

  750. and be put in an envelope

  751. and you could lick

  752. the envelope

  753. if you want to

  754. and seal it,

  755. but it's easy

  756. to steam those open

  757. or whatever

  758. and kind of people

  759. would know

  760. they've been tampered with.

  761. So kids came up

  762. with this idea

  763. of this wax seal

  764. and so you'd put

  765. a wax seal

  766. on that envelope

  767. and then you would

  768. put your initial

  769. in the seal

  770. and it would harden

  771. and then if you tried

  772. to open the envelope,

  773. you would break

  774. that seal

  775. and people,

  776. this messy thing

  777. on the envelope,

  778. you'd know

  779. somebody tampered with it.

  780. We were pretty sharp

  781. back then.

  782. Well,

  783. the idea

  784. of the Holy Spirit

  785. is the seal

  786. that God has placed

  787. on us

  788. and may I remind you

  789. that there is no

  790. higher power

  791. that could break

  792. that seal.

  793. That's security.

  794. The seal means

  795. that we're in process.

  796. We're still down here.

  797. We still sin.

  798. All of that's going

  799. to be,

  800. all of that is going

  801. to be someday.

  802. All these things

  803. will be true.

  804. Sin will be gone.

  805. All that's gone

  806. someday.

  807. But it's not here yet.

  808. The good news is

  809. that God has left

  810. this Holy Spirit

  811. who in spite

  812. of all of our sins

  813. and all of our failures

  814. and all of our shortcomings

  815. and all of our inconsistencies

  816. is a source

  817. of encouragement

  818. concerning His

  819. gracious work

  820. in us

  821. and the incredible

  822. promise of more

  823. to come.

  824. So the seal means

  825. that we're in process

  826. but it also guarantees

  827. completion.

  828. Paul told the Romans

  829. in the Roman folks

  830. in his letter

  831. in chapter 8

  832. that creation

  833. is waiting eagerly

  834. for the completion

  835. of our redemption.

  836. That sounds

  837. a little strange.

  838. But when we're complete

  839. all of creation

  840. will be made new.

  841. Though creation

  842. is groaning now

  843. it is anticipating

  844. with confidence

  845. that this promised

  846. day will arrive.

  847. The seal

  848. the Holy Spirit

  849. is the promise

  850. the guarantee

  851. that all of this

  852. will happen.

  853. I have the down payment

  854. that God will not default.

  855. What He has planned

  856. before the foundation

  857. of the world

  858. He will complete.

  859. You know

  860. Philippians chapter 1

    Philippians 1:6

  861. verse 6

  862. that

  863. He who began

  864. a good work in you

  865. what's He going to do?

  866. He's going to finish it.

  867. He's left His Spirit here

  868. to guarantee that

  869. to us

  870. that He'll finish

  871. His work.

  872. There may be

  873. many reasons

  874. why this is so

  875. but Paul reminds us

  876. at least of this.

  877. The seal

  878. is

  879. to the praise

  880. of the Father's glory.

  881. See God planned

  882. all of this

  883. and invested

  884. in His Son

  885. to carry out

  886. redemption's plan.

  887. He brought

  888. that good news

  889. of salvation

  890. to us

  891. and when we believed

  892. He gave us

  893. the Holy Spirit

  894. as a promise

  895. of completion

  896. and all of that

  897. to the praise

  898. of His glory.

  899. For this to end

  900. in some tragic default

  901. or failure

  902. or unfinished work

  903. that would not bring

  904. glory to God.

  905. In the divine purpose

  906. of redemption

  907. the primary reason

  908. for our salvation

  909. would be lost.

  910. That's not going to happen

  911. to anything

  912. that God has planned.

  913. That's not going to happen

  914. to anything

  915. that God is implementing.

  916. As an encouragement

  917. to us

  918. concerning this

  919. grand inheritance

  920. we have been given

  921. God's Holy Spirit.

  922. How is that for reason

  923. to give praise

  924. and glory to God?

  925. So you have the Father

  926. who has given us

  927. all these spiritual blessings

  928. all spiritual blessings

  929. in the heavenly places

  930. all that through the Son

  931. and all that guaranteed

  932. by the Holy Spirit.

  933. At the moment

  934. we receive

  935. our full inheritance

  936. which will include

  937. a glorious

  938. resurrection body

  939. the redemption

  940. of God's own possession

  941. will be complete.

  942. We will be granted

  943. the inheritance

  944. as God's own possession

  945. fully released

  946. from all the effects

  947. of sin.

  948. We will then be

  949. fully manifested

  950. as His own

  951. peculiar

  952. special treasure

  953. enjoying forever

  954. all that He has planned

  955. for us

  956. from eternity past.

  957. We are not our own

  958. we are bought

  959. with a price

  960. we are to glorify

  961. God in our bodies

  962. whether we live

  963. or die

  964. we are the Lord's.

  965. Some things

  966. in the Bible

  967. theological truths

  968. sometimes they are

  969. hard for us

  970. to put together

  971. some throughout

  972. the ages

  973. have made ways

  974. for us

  975. to remember

  976. answers

  977. to questions

  978. and be able

  979. to answer

  980. articulately

  981. about what

  982. the scripture

  983. teaches

  984. those were called

  985. catechisms

  986. they were used

  987. for both children

  988. and adults

  989. to teach

  990. important truths

  991. and here is a question

  992. that maybe

  993. I should ask

  994. you

  995. and ask myself

  996. what is your

  997. only comfort

  998. in life and death?

  999. Think about it

  1000. what is your

  1001. only comfort

  1002. in life and death?

  1003. in the Heidelberg

  1004. Catechism

  1005. in 1563

  1006. this was the answer

  1007. given to that question

  1008. that I

  1009. with body

  1010. and soul

  1011. both in life

  1012. and death

  1013. am not my own

  1014. but belong

  1015. to my faithful

  1016. Savior

  1017. Jesus Christ

  1018. who with

  1019. his precious

  1020. blood

  1021. has fully

  1022. satisfied

  1023. all my sin

  1024. and delivered

  1025. me

  1026. from all the

  1027. power of the devil

  1028. and so preserves

  1029. me

  1030. that without

  1031. the will

  1032. of my heavenly

  1033. Father

  1034. not a hair

  1035. can fall

  1036. from my head

  1037. that all

  1038. things must

  1039. be subservient

  1040. to my salvation

  1041. whether by

  1042. his Holy Spirit

  1043. wherefore

  1044. by his Holy Spirit

  1045. he also assures

  1046. me of eternal

  1047. life

  1048. and makes me

  1049. heartily willing

  1050. and ready

  1051. to live

  1052. unto him

  1053. my guess is

  1054. that you probably

  1055. wouldn't have

  1056. answered that

  1057. question quite like

  1058. that but that's

  1059. the answer

  1060. that's the answer

  1061. that certainly

  1062. was Paul's

  1063. perspective

  1064. ready to live

  1065. for him

  1066. ready to give

  1067. him praise

  1068. for all that

  1069. he is

  1070. and all that

  1071. he's done

  1072. that's all

  1073. a grand

  1074. warm up

  1075. for what awaits

  1076. us in his

  1077. very presence

  1078. so are we

  1079. able to respond

  1080. to God

  1081. with a heart

  1082. overflowing

  1083. with love

  1084. and gratitude

  1085. as did Paul

  1086. all that has

  1087. happened

  1088. from the

  1089. father's

  1090. blessings

  1091. found in the

  1092. son

  1093. sealed by the

  1094. spirit

  1095. all of that

  1096. was and is

  1097. and will be

  1098. to the praise

  1099. of his glory

  1100. so the question

  1101. for myself

  1102. and for you

  1103. is that where

  1104. our hearts

  1105. are today

  1106. if not

  1107. what do we

  1108. do

  1109. I would suggest

  1110. we go back

  1111. and reread

  1112. the text

  1113. what's it say

  1114. and then start

  1115. praising him

  1116. for what he's

  1117. done

  1118. and maybe

  1119. after we do

  1120. that a few

  1121. times

  1122. our hearts

  1123. will sound

  1124. something like

  1125. this

  1126. again from

  1127. a hymn

  1128. by Charles

  1129. Wesley

  1130. finish

  1131. then thy

  1132. new creation

  1133. pure

  1134. and spotless

  1135. let us be

  1136. let us see

  1137. thy great

  1138. salvation

  1139. perfectly

  1140. restored

  1141. in thee

  1142. change

  1143. from glory

  1144. into glory

  1145. till with

  1146. thee we

  1147. take our

  1148. place

  1149. till we

  1150. cast our

  1151. crowns

  1152. before thee

  1153. lost

  1154. in wonder

  1155. love

  1156. and praise

  1157. whatever the

  1158. tune

  1159. here's the

  1160. believer's

  1161. responsibility

  1162. and joy

  1163. praise God

  1164. from whom

  1165. all blessings

  1166. flow

  1167. praise him

  1168. all creatures

  1169. here below

  1170. praise him

  1171. above

  1172. ye heavenly

  1173. hosts

  1174. praise

  1175. father

  1176. son

  1177. and holy

  1178. ghost

  1179. amen

  1180. let's pray

  1181. father
